Abstract
In the petroleum sector, the generation of oily sludge is an unavoidable byproduct, necessitating the development of efficient treatment strategies for both economic gain and the mitigation of negative environmental impacts. The intricate composition of oily sludge poses a formidable challenge, as existing treatment methodologies frequently fall short of achieving baseline disposal criteria. The processes of demulsification and dehydration are integral to diminishing the oil content and reclaiming valuable crude oil, thereby playing a critical role in the management of oily sludge. Among the myriad of treatment solutions, ultrasonic technology has emerged as a particularly effective physical method, celebrated for its diverse applications and lack of resultant secondary pollution. This comprehensive review delves into the underlying mechanisms and recent progress in the ultrasonic treatment of oily sludge, with a specific focus on its industrial implementations within China. Both isolated ultrasonic treatment and its combination with other technological approaches have proven successful in addressing oily sludge challenges. The adoption of industrial-scale systems that amalgamate ultrasound with multi-technological processes has shown marked enhancements in treatment efficacy. The fusion of ultrasonic technology with other cutting-edge methods holds considerable potential across a spectrum of applications. To fulfill the goals of resource recovery, reduction, and neutralization in oily sludge management, the industrial adoption and adept application of a variety of treatment technologies are imperative.

Abstract
Excitation-emission matrix (EEM) spectroscopy has been proven to be an effective tool for offline fluorescence analysis. However, the pretreatment of EEM data requires an additional ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectrum for inner filter effect (IFE) correction. This complicates the instrument structure and increases the test flow, thus hindering the practical application of EEM in environmental online monitoring. In this work, Rayleigh scattering in EEM, which is often masked, is leveraged to address this challenge as Rayleigh scattering light itself passes through the sample and experiences absorption. We establish a translation-corrected estimation by the Rayleigh scattering (TCERS) method to estimate absorbance, not only enabling the IFE self-correction of EEM but also providing orthogonal spectroscopy information. TCERS is hierarchically tested in real solutions, simulated turbid liquids, and various natural water samples. Results indicate that the predicted UV-vis absorption spectra have a cosine similarity of over 0.95 with the actual spectra. When using the predicted spectra to correct the IFE of EEM, only about 0.005/1.440 bits of information entropy are lost and the absolute errors in EEM are negligible. The proposed method has the potential to streamline the design of fluorescence spectrometers, making it possible to miniaturize, optimize, and popularize these instruments for various practical applications such as environmental monitoring.

Abstract
Recovery of phosphate (P) from sludge, domestic wastewater, and industrial wastewater is beneficial for overcoming the problem of shortage of P rock resources. In this study, Mg-functionalized peanut shell-derived biochar was prepared by ultrasound-assisted impregnation. The obtained Mg-laden biochar had a higher content of Mg, a larger specific surface area, and more porosity. The prepared Mg-modified biochar exhibited excellent adsorption properties of phosphorus. Modified biochar has a higher amount of adsorbed P than raw biochar. The capacity of P adsorption by modified biochar was 30.48-114.24% higher than that by raw biochar. Moreover, the Mg-laden biochar can be applied in a wide working environment (pH: 2-10; temperature range: 15-40 °C). This study not only develops a new strategy for the preparation of high-capacity P adsorbents but also provides a new green use for agricultural peanut shells.

Abstract
Intensification of ultrasonic processes for diversified applications, including environmental remediation, extractions, food processes, and synthesis of materials, has received attention from the scientific community and industry. The mechanistic pathways involved in intensification of ultrasonic processes that include the ultrasonic generation of cavitation bubbles, radical formation upon their collapse, and the possibility of fine-tuning operating parameters for specific applications are all well documented in the literature. However, the scale-up of ultrasonic processes with large-scale sonochemical reactors for industrial applications remains a challenge. In this context, this review provides a complete overview of the current understanding of the role of operating parameters and reactor configuration on the sonochemical processes. Experimental and theoretical techniques to characterize the intensity and distribution of cavitation activity within sonoreactors are compared. Classes of laboratory and large-scale sonoreactors are reviewed, highlighting recent advances in batch and flow-through reactors. Finally, examples of large-scale sonoprocessing applications have been reviewed, discussing the major scale-up and sustainability challenges.

Abstract
This study approaches the development of a method for the determination of Ca, Mg, Zn, and Fe in liquid and powdered cow milk. The method is based on sample dissolution assisted by ultrasound energy in tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH) media and determination by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS). Central composite design (CCD) associated with response surface methodology and desirability function allowed the fast and efficient optimization of the variables involved in the performance of the dissolution. The developed dissolution method allowed Ca, Fe, Zn, and Mg determination in milk samples with adequate analytical characteristics for these determinations. Addition/recovery tests and analysis of a certified reference material of skimmed powdered milk (ERM-BD150) have shown that this method presents enough accuracy to carry out these analyses.

Abstract
Zeaxanthin dipalmitate (ZDP) is a major non-saponified carotenoid in fully ripe fruits of Lycium barbarum L. In the present study, response surface methodology was used to optimize the ultrasonic-assisted extraction (UAE) conditions of carotenoids from the fruits of L. barbarum, and the optimal extraction conditions were determined as follows: ultrasonic power of 360 W, ultrasonic time of 40 min and the ratio of extraction solvent to sample of 30 mL/g. An actual value of ZDP content of 5.40 mg/g and short extraction time indicated the efficiency of UAE. Furthermore, a promising high-speed counter-current chromatography (HSCCC) method was established for the purification of ZDP from the fruits of L. barbarum. With a developed two-phase solvent system composed of n-hexane/dichloromethane/acetonitrile (10/3/7, v/v/v), ZDP with a purity of higher than 95% was successfully isolated from the crude extract. This is the first report on the purification of ZDP by using HSCCC.

Abstract
Effects of ultrasound (20-40% amplitudes at 45-55 °C) and enzymatic (pepsin and trypsin) treatment on structure and antioxidant activity of β-lactoglobulin were studied. Changes in structure of β-lactoglobulin were investigated using spectroscopy techniques and changes in antioxidant activity were measured by chemical and cellular-based assays. Ultrasound treatment had considerable impact on the structure of β-lactoglobulin and increased the susceptibility of β-lactoglobulin to both pepsin and trypsin proteolysis. Intrinsic fluorescence intensity of β-lactoglobulin was increased by ultrasound and then decreased after following enzymatic treatment. Compared with control, the β-lactoglobulin after ultrasound and enzymatic treatments showed significantly higher oxygen scavenging activities in Caco-2 cells models, ABTS (2, 2'-Azinobis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonate) radical scavenging activity and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (p < 0.05). Results indicated that ultrasound treatment increased the proteolysis of β-lactoglobulin by both pepsin and trypsin and improved the antioxidant activity of the protein and its proteolytic products.

Abstract
New ultrasound-assisted extraction methods for the determination of anthocyanins and total phenolic compounds present in mulberries have been developed. Several extraction variables, including methanol composition (50-100%), temperature (10-70°C), ultrasound amplitude (30-70%), cycle (0.2-0.7s), solvent pH (3-7) and solvent-solid ratio (10:1.5-20:1.5) were optimized. A Box-Behnken design in conjunction with a response surface methodology was employed to optimize the conditions for the maximum response based on 54 different experiments. Two response variables were considered: total anthocyanins and total phenolic compounds. Extraction temperature and solvent composition were found to be the most influential parameters for anthocyanins (48°C and 76%) and phenolic compounds (64°C and 61%). The developed methods showed high reproducibility and repeatability (RSD<5%). Finally, the new methods were successfully applied to real samples in order to investigate the presence of anthocyanins and total phenolic compounds in several mulberry jams.

Abstract
In this study, the impact of high intensity ultrasound (HIU) on proteins in whey protein isolates was examined. Effects on thermal behavior, secondary structure and nature of intra- and intermolecular bonds during heat-induced gelling were investigated. Ultrasonication (24 kHz, 300 W/cm(2), 2078 J/mL) significantly reduced denaturation enthalpies, whereas no change in secondary structure was detected by circular dichroism. The thiol-blocking agent N-ethylmaleimide was applied in order to inhibit formation of disulfide bonds during gel formation. Results showed that increased contents of α-lactalbumin (α-La) were associated with increased sensitivity to ultrasonication. The α-La:β-lactoglobulin (β-Lg) ratio greatly affected the nature of the interactions formed during gelation, where higher amounts of α-La lead to a gel more dependent on disulfide bonds. These results contribute to clarifying the mechanisms mediating the effects of HIU on whey proteins on the molecular level, thus moving further toward implementing HIU in the processing chain in the food industry.

Abstract
A novel procedure comprising ultrasonic-assisted dynamic extraction (UADE) coupled with two countercurrent-chromatography systems (parallel countercurrent chromatography, PCCC) was developed. This technique offers the possibility for simultaneous extraction, solvent configuration, purification, and isolation of target compounds. This new approach was applied to the fractionation and purification of isoflavones from red clover. The two-phase solvent system was prepared by automating the equipment. The lower aqueous phase of the two-phase solvent system was used as the UADE solution and as the mobile phase for PCCC. After the extraction and purification steps, the purified sample was pumped into the countercurrent chromatography 1 (CCC1) column for the first isolation step. During CCC1 separation, the sample was enriched and purified and then pumped into the CCC2 column for the second isolation step. After completion of the first cycle of UADE-PCCC steps, the second-cycle experiments were performed. Using this sequence, five target compounds, daidzein, prunetin, genistein, irilone, and maackiain, with >95.31 % purity were successfully extracted and isolated using the two-phase solvent system of n-hexane-ethyl acetate-ethanol-water (0.623:1.00:0.99:1.246, v/v). With this instrumental setup, scientific and systematic extraction and isolation of natural products was achieved, and this technique has great potential for industrial application. Abstract
A new approach was developed for the preconcentration of cadmium (Cd) and nickel (Ni) in artificial saliva extract of dry snuff (brown and black) products using temperature-controlled ionic liquid-based ultrasound-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (TIL-UDLLμE) followed by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS). The Cd and Ni were complexed with ammonium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate (APDC), extracted in ionic liquid drops, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate [C4MIM][PF6]. The multivariate strategy was applied to estimate the optimum values of experimental variables influence the % recovery of analytes by TIL-UDLLμE method. At optimum experimental conditions, the limit of detection (3s) were 0.05 and 0.14μgL(-1) while relative standard deviations (% RSD) were 3.97 and 3.55 for Cd and Ni respectively. After extraction, the enhancement factors (EF) were 87 and 79 for Cd and Ni, respectively. The RSD for six replicates of 10μgL(-1) Cd and Ni were 3.97% and 3.55% respectively. To validate the proposed method, certified reference material (CRM) of Virginia tobacco leaves was analyzed, and the determined values of Cd and Ni were in good agreement with the certified values. The concentration of Cd and Ni in artificial saliva extracts corresponds to 39-52% and 21-32%, respectively, of the total contents of both elements in dry brown and black snuff products.

Abstract
This paper proposes a novel analytical strategy for the routine determination of urea in animal feedstuffs, combining an ultrasound-assisted miniaturized extraction protocol with a microplate colorimetric assay based on the reaction between 4-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde and urea. In order to accelerate the extraction, we introduced an ultrasound-assisted miniaturized protocol and compared it with both classic and miniaturized alternatives. The potential interference of amino acids was bypassed by shifting the detection wavelength from 435 to 450 nm. Urea could be quantified in the range 0.05-1.00% (w/w) with high precision (RSD < 5%). The results were in agreement with a commercial enzymatic method, demonstrating the accuracy and selectivity of the assay. The miniaturization led to a 50 times downscale when compared to the official method, resulting in a reduction of at least 90% in chemical consumption per determination, contributing to a more "green" and sustainable analytical methodology.

Abstract
Three modes of liquid-liquid based microextraction techniques--namely auxiliary solvent-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction, auxiliary solvent-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction with low-solvent consumption, and ultrasound-assisted emulsification microextraction--were compared. Picric acid was used as the model analyte. The determination is based on the reaction of picric acid with Astra Phloxine reagent to produce an ion associate easily extractable by various organic solvents, followed by spectrophotometric detection at 558 nm. Each of the compared procedures has both advantages and disadvantages. The main benefit of ultrasound-assisted emulsification microextraction is that no hazardous chlorinated extraction solvents and no dispersive solvent are necessary. Therefore, this procedure was selected for validation. Under optimized experimental conditions (pH 3, 7 × 10(-5) mol/L of Astra Phloxine, and 100 μL of toluene), the calibration plot was linear in the range of 0.02-0.14 mg/L and the LOD was 7 μg/L of picric acid. The developed procedure was applied to the analysis of spiked water samples.

Abstract
A sample preparation method for percentage recovery of total sulphur (%S) in reactive mine tailings based on ultrasound-assisted digestion (USAD) and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) was developed. The influence of various methodological factors was screened by employing a two-level and three-factor (2(3)) full factorial design and using KZK-1, a sericite schist certified reference material (CRM), to find the optimal combination of studied factors and %S. Factors such as the sonication time, temperature and acid combination were studied, with the best result identified as 20 min of sonication, 80°C temperature and 1 ml of HNO(3):1 ml of HCl, which can achieve 100% recovery for the selected CRM. Subsequently a fraction of the 2(3) full factorial design was applied to mine tailings. The percentage relative standard deviation (%RSD) for the ultrasound method is less than 3.0% for CRM and less than 6% for the mine tailings. The investigated method was verified by X-ray diffraction analysis. The USAD method compared favorably with existing methods such as hot plate assisted digestion method, X-ray fluorescence and LECO™-CNS method.

Abstract
In this paper, a liquid multi-parameter decoupling method with only one Lamb wave sensor is presented. In a Lamb wave sensor, antisymmetric modes (A(01) mode for low frequency, A(03) mode for high frequency) and symmetric modes (S(0) mode) are used to detect multiple parameters of a liquid, such as its density, sound velocity, and viscosity. We found they can play very different roles in the detections. For example, the A(01) mode is very sensitive to the liquid's density but the A(03) mode is sensitive to the sound velocity. Here, the A(0) mode is used to identify the density of the detected liquid and with this density value we obtained the viscosity by the amplitude shifts of the S(0) mode. This could be a way to distinguish an unknown liquid with high sensitivity or to solve the problem of selectivity of label-free detection on biosensors.

Abstract
Ultrasound-assisted cloud point extraction (UACPE) procedure was developed for speciation and indirect spectrophotometric determination of chromium(III) and (VI) in environmental water samples. The method is based on the reduction of Cr(VI) by iodide in acidic media and subsequently formation of I(3)(-) anion. The I(3)(-) formed can further react with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and induce its clouding due to formation of an ion-association complex. The formed complex was separated from solution and dissolved in ethanol for spectrophotometric measurement. Cerium(IV) ammonium sulphate was chosen as an oxidizing reagent for pre-oxidation step of Cr(III) to Cr(VI) species before the addition of iodide to the system, up to chromium in trivalent can be determined by the procedure. Experimental parameters for both spectrophotometric reaction and extraction procedure have been optimized. Under optimized conditions Cr(VI) can be determined in the range 20-400 ng mL(-1) (R(2)=0.999). Detection limit, preconcentration factor and relative standard deviation were 12 ng mL(-1), 20.0 and 2.2% (n=5), respectively with 10 mL sample volumes. The proposed method has been successfully applied for determination of chromium(V) in spiked water, synthetic seawater and electroplating wastewater samples with average recoveries of 100.1, 99.4 and 99.1%, respectively.

Abstract
A new simple and rapid ultrasound-assisted ionic liquid-based microextraction method was applied to preconcentrate aluminum(III), gallium(III), and indium(III) ions from water samples as a prior step to their simultaneous spectrophotometric determination using least squares support vector machines regression. In the novel procedure, 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate [C(6)MIM][PF(6)] was dispersed into the aqueous sample solution as fine droplets by ultrasonication, and the analytes were extracted into the ionic liquid phase after complexation with 1,2,5,8-tetrahydroxy anthraquinone (quinalizarine). After centrifuging, the fine droplets of extractant phase were settled to the bottom of the conical-bottom glass centrifuge tube. The detection limits for Al(III), Ga(III), and In(III) were 1.70, 2.02, and 2.06 ng mL(-1), respectively. The precision of the method, evaluated as the relative standard deviation obtained by analyzing a series of ten replicates, was below 3.2% for all elements. The method was successfully applied for the determination of Al(III), Ga(III), and In(III) in real samples.

Abstract
The dissolution properties of a drug and its release from the dosage form have a basic impact on its bioavailability. Solubility problems are a major challenge for the pharmaceutical industry as concerns the development of new pharmaceutical products. Formulation problems may possibly be overcome by modification of particle size and morphology. The application of power ultrasound is a novel possibility in drug formulation. This article reports on solvent diffusion and melt emulsification, as new methods supplemented with drying in the field of sonocrystallization of poorly water-soluble Gemfibrozil. During thermoanalytical characterization, a modified structure was detected. The specific surface area of the drug was increased following particle size reduction and the poor wettability properties could also be improved. The dissolution rate was therefore significantly increased.

Abstract
Phenolic compounds constitute a major class of plant secondary metabolites that are widely distributed in the plant kingdom and show a large structural diversity. These compounds occur as aglycones or glycosides, as monomers or constituting highly polymerized structures, or as free or matrix-bound compounds. Furthermore, they are not uniformly distributed in the plant and their stability varies significantly. This greatly complicates their extraction and isolation processes, which means that a single standardized procedure cannot be recommended for all phenolics and/or plant materials; procedures have to be optimized depending on the nature of the sample and the target analytes, and also on the object of the study. In this chapter, the main techniques for sample preparation, and extraction and isolation of phenolic compounds have been reviewed-from classical solvent extraction procedures to more modern approaches, such as the use of molecularly imprinted polymers or counter-current chromatography.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Heterotheca inuloides Cass., also known as "arnica", is used in traditional medicine in Mexico. OBJECTIVE Development of fast methods for the extraction of lipidic and phenolic fractions from arnica plants and their subsequent characterization. METHODOLOGY Ultrasound was applied to accelerate extraction of the target compounds from this plant and reduce the use of organic solvents as compared with conventional methods. Gas chromatography-ion trap mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography with diode-array detection were used for the characterization of the lipidic and phenolic fractions, respectively. RESULTS Under optimal extraction conditions, 9 and 55 min were necessary to complete extraction of the lipidic and phenolic fractions, respectively. The fatty acids present at the highest concentrations in H. inuloides were eicosatetraenoic n3 (24.6 μg/g), cis-9-hexadecenoic n7 (23.1 μg/g), exacosanoic (22.7 μg/g) and cis-9-octadecenoic acid (21.3 μg/g), while the rest were in the range 7.6-1.3 μg/g. The most concentrated phenols were guaiacol (41.5 μg/g), catechin (38.7 μg/g), ellagic acid (35.9 μg/g), carbolic acid (24.2 μg/g) and p-coumaric acid (19.5 μg/g), while the rest were in the range 5.1-0.4 μg/g. CONCLUSION Ultrasound reduces the time necessary to complete the extraction 160 and 26 times, the extraction volume 2.5 and 4 times, and increases the extraction efficiency 5 and 3 times for lipidic and phenolic fractions, respectively, in comparison with conventional extraction methods. In addition, the characterization of the lipidic and phenolic fractions constitutes a first approach to the H. inuloides metabolome.

Abstract
The influence of deep frying, mimicked by 20 heating cycles at 180 °C (each cycle from ambient temperature to 180 °C maintained for 5 min), on the unsaponifiable fraction of vegetable edible oils represented by three characteristic families of compounds (namely, phytosterols, aliphatic alcohols, and triterpenic compounds) has been studied. The target oils were extra virgin olive oil (with intrinsic content of phenolic antioxidants), refined sunflower oil enriched with antioxidant phenolic compounds isolated from olive pomace, refined sunflower oil enriched with an autoxidation inhibitor (dimethylpolysiloxane), and refined sunflower oil without enrichment. Monitoring of the target analytes as a function of both heating cycle and the presence of natural antioxidants was also evaluated by comparison of the profiles after each heating cycle. Identification and quantitation of the target compounds were performed by gas cromatography-mass spectrometry in single ion monitoring mode. Analysis of the heated oils revealed that the addition of natural antioxidants could be an excellent strategy to decrease degradation of lipidic components of the unsaponifiable fraction with the consequent improvement of stability.

Abstract
An ultrasound-assisted hydrolysis and gas chromatography-mass spectrometric (GC-MS) method has been developed for determination of phenolics in cranberry products. Prior to GC-MS separation and characterisation, the phenolics in samples were hydrolysed by hydrochloric acid with ultrasound-assistance, extracted with ethyl acetate, and derivatised with N,O-bis(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide (BSTFA)+1% trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) reagents. The application of ultrasonication significantly accelerated the acidic hydrolysation of the conjugated phenolics. A baseline separation of the 20 phenolics and internal standard was achieved in 25min. Standard calibration curves were linear over the concentration range of 0.0-50μg/mL and detection limits were 0.06-0.70μg/mL. Twenty phenolics were identified in cranberry samples and all of them occurred mainly in conjugated forms. Of those, the benzoic acid, quercetin, and myricetin were most abundant phenolics. The total phenolics were 12.4mg/g in cranberry fruits, 9.1mg/mL in 100% cranberry juice, and 11.1mg/g in cranberry sauces, respectively.

Abstract
This article reviews the numerous ways in which inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry has been used for the analysis of environmental samples since it was commercially introduced in 1983. Its multielemental isotopic capability, high sensitivity and wide linear dynamic range makes it ideally suited for environmental analysis. Provided that some care is taken during sample preparation and that appropriate calibration strategies are used to circumvent non-spectroscopic interferences, the technique is readily applicable to the analysis of a wide variety of environmental samples (natural waters, soils, rocks, sediments, vegetation, etc.), using quadrupole, time-of-flight or double-focusing sector-field mass spectrometers. In cases where spectroscopic interferences arising from the sample matrix cannot be resolved, then separation methods can be implemented either on- or off-line, which can simultaneously allow analyte preconcentration, thus further decreasing the already low detection limits that are achievable. In most cases, the blank, prepared by following the same steps as for the sample but without the sample, limits the ultimate detection limits that can be reached.

Abstract
Tobacco leaves (Nicotiana tabacum L.), agricultural soil and pollute irrigated lake water samples were collected during 2005--2006 and analyzed for Cd and Ni by electrothermal atomic absorption spectrometry (ETAAS). A simple and efficient procedure was investigated for the complete decomposition of tobacco leaves using ultrasonic assisted acid pseudo-digestion method (UPDM). A Plackett-Burman experimental design was used as a multivariate strategy for the evaluation of seven factors/variables at once, while central composite were used to found optimum values of significant variables. The accuracy of the proposed methods was assessed by analyzing certified reference (CRM); Virginia tobacco leaves (CTA-VTL-2). The results being compared with those obtained by conventional wet acid digestion method. The result obtained by optimized method showed good agreement with the certified values and sufficiently high recovery 97.8 and 98.7% for Cd and Ni, respectively. Under optimal conditions, the detection limits (3sigma) were evaluated to be 0.019 microg g(-1) for Cd and 0.37 microg g(-1) for Ni. The proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of Cd and Ni in raw, processed tobacco and different branded cigarettes samples.
