Abstract
Protein-polyphenol conjugates with enhanced antioxidant properties offer significant benefits to multiple food systems, including emulsions, gels, and food packaging systems. In this study, tannic acid (TA)-covalently mediated ternary zein/casein-tannic acid nanoparticles (ZCTPs) were effectively fabricated using a pH-driven method. Results showed that the addition of TA reduced the particle size of ZCTPs (from 93 to 74 nm), with improved uniformities (PDI of 0.25) and greater stabilities (zeta potential of -48 mV) compared to zein/casein nanoparticles (ZCPs). Further, SDS-PAGE confirmed the successful establishment of covalent binding between TA and dual proteins. In ZCTPs, TA exhibited a high affinity (66-93 %) to proteins, obviously inducing rearrangements in the protein secondary and tertiary structures. Afterward, the antioxidant activities of ZCTPs were significantly enhanced to 57 and 79 % against DPPH· and ABTS+·, respectively. This novel protein-polyphenol conjugate holds promising potential as a functional ingredient and delivery system in the food industry.

Abstract
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has arisen due to antibiotic overuse and misuse. Antibiotic resistance renders standard treatments less effective, making it difficult to control some infections, thereby increasing morbidity and mortality. Medicinal plants are attracting increased interest as antibiotics lose efficacy. This study evaluates the antibacterial activity of solvent extracts prepared using Terminalia bellirica and Terminalia chebula fruit against six bacterial pathogens using disc diffusion and broth microdilution assays. The aqueous and methanol extracts of T. bellirica and T. chebula showed substantial zones of inhibition (ZOIs) against Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA). The activity against those bacteria was strong, with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) ranging from 94 µg/mL to 392 µg/mL. Additionally, the T. bellirica methanolic extract showed noteworthy antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and an extended spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) E. coli strain (MIC values of 755 µg/mL for both). The aqueous T. bellirica and T. chebula extracts also inhibited Klebsiella pneumoniae growth (MIC values of 784 µg/mL and 556 µg/mL, respectively). The corresponding methanolic extracts also inhibited ESBL K. pneumoniae growth (MIC values of 755 µg/mL and 1509 µg/mL, respectively). Eighteen additive interactions were observed when extracts were combined with reference antibiotics. Strong antagonism occurred when any of the extracts were mixed with polymyxin B. Liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy (LC-MS) analysis of the extracts revealed several interesting flavonoids and tannins, including 6-galloylglucose, 1,2,6-trigalloyl-β-D-glucopyranose, 6-O-[(2E)-3-phenyl-2-propenoyl]-1-O-(3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoyl)-β-D-glucopyranose, propyl gallate, methyl gallate, sanguiin H4, hamamelitannin, pyrogallol, gallic acid, ellagic acid, chebulic acid, and chebuloside II. All extracts were nontoxic in brine shrimp assays. This lack of toxicity, combined with their antibacterial activities, suggests that these plant species may be promising sources of antibacterial compound(s) that warrant further study.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the antimicrobial effectiveness of cinnamaldehyde (CIN) and potassium sorbate (P.S.), alone and in combination, against Salmonella Typhimurium and Staphylococcus aureus in vitro and in apple jam. Antimicrobial activity in vitro was investigated by minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC), time-kill assay and determination of fractional inhibitory concentration index. CIN MIC and MBC was 312 μg/mL. P.S. MIC and MBC were 2500 and 5000 μg/mL, respectively, against S. Typhimurium; and 10,000 and 20,000 μg/mL, respectively, against S. aureus. The compounds combined exhibited a synergistic effect (FIC < 0.5), inhibiting S. Typhimurium growth after 12 h and S. aureus after 24 h. The effect of CIN and P.S., at sub-inhibitory concentrations, against bacterial strains in apple jam was evaluated during storage. Physicochemical and sensory analyses were also performed. No cultivable S. Typhimurium or S. aureus cells were recovered in apple jam supplemented with CIN + P.S. on the third day of storage. The addition of CIN and P.S. did not affect the physicochemical properties and sensory evaluation showed a score above 7.0. CIN and P.S. association at sub-inhibitory concentrations was effective in controlling foodborne pathogens and improved the shelf life of apple jam.

Abstract
Leukopenia is the most common side effect of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. It potentially deteriorates into a life-threatening complication in cancer patients. Despite several agents being approved for clinical administration, there are still high incidences of pathogen-related disease due to a lack of functional immune cells. ADP-ribosyl cyclase of CD38 displays a regulatory effect on leukopoiesis and the immune system. To explore whether the ADP-ribosyl cyclase was a potential therapeutic target of leukopenia. We established a drug screening model based on an ADP-ribosyl cyclase-based pharmacophore generation algorithm and discovered three novel ADP-ribosyl cyclase agonists: ziyuglycoside II (ZGSII), brevifolincarboxylic acid (BA), and 3,4-dihydroxy-5-methoxybenzoic acid (DMA). Then, in vitro experiments demonstrated that these three natural compounds significantly promoted myeloid differentiation and antibacterial activity in NB4 cells. In vivo, experiments confirmed that the compounds also stimulated the recovery of leukocytes in irradiation-induced mice and zebrafish. The mechanism was investigated by network pharmacology, and the top 12 biological processes and the top 20 signaling pathways were obtained by intersecting target genes among ZGSII, BA, DMA, and leukopenia. The potential signaling molecules involved were further explored through experiments. Finally, the ADP-ribosyl cyclase agonists (ZGSII, BA, and DMA) has been found to regenerate microbicidal myeloid cells to effectively ameliorate leukopenia-associated infection by activating CD38/ADP-ribosyl cyclase-Ca2+-NFAT. In summary, this study constructs a drug screening model to discover active compounds against leukopenia, reveals the critical roles of ADP-ribosyl cyclase in promoting myeloid differentiation and the immune response, and provides a promising strategy for the treatment of radiation-induced leukopenia.

Abstract
This study explores the synergistic antibacterial effects of essential oils (EOs) and phenolic extracts from three plants against foodborne pathogenic bacteria. The present work aimed to investigate the synergistic effects of the binary and the ternary combinations of extracts using different blend proportions of the following plant extracts: Artemisia campestris (AC), Artemisia herba alba (AHA), and Citrus aurantium (CA). The antimicrobial activities of EOs and phenolic extracts were determined and evaluated against five strains. For the EOs, the results of the DIZ showed the existence of synergism for different combinations of binary blends, such as AC/AHA or AHA/CA against Escherichia coli, and AC/CA against Enterobacter faecalis. In addition, ternary blends of AC:AHA:CA at a ratio of 1/6:2/3:1/6 exhibited a synergy effect, as measured by the CI, against E. coli. On the other hand, for the phenolic extracts, synergistic effects were noticed for binary blends of AC/CA at different ratios against E. coli, E. faecalis, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains. Similarly, ternary blends of phenolic extracts presented synergy against E. coli, E. faecalis, P. aeruginosa strains, and even C. albicans. In this case, the blending ratios were crucial determining factors for maximizing the synergy effect. The study established that the proportion of a single drug could play an essential role in determining the bioefficacy of a drug combination treatment. Therefore, the results showed the importance of studying the modulation of antibacterial activities based on the proportions of extracts in the mixture and finding the range of proportions (as determined by SLMD) that have a synergistic/additive/antagonistic effect with no or low side effects, which can be used in a food preservation system.

Abstract
Thirteen undescribed ursane-type triterpenoids, named as sangosides A-M (1-13), including two nor-ursanes, one split ring-ursane and ten ursanes, along with thirty-six known triterpenoids (14-49) were isolated and identified from the roots of Sanguisorba officinalis (Rosaceae). Their structures and absolute configurations were elucidated through spectroscopic data, single-crystal X-ray crystallography and electronic circular dichroism analysis. Their Nrf2 activation activity was evaluated in 293 T cells in vitro. Compounds 2, 5-7, 9-13, 19, 25, 26, 28-39, 41 and 46 showed significant Nrf2 agonistic effects compared with the control group at 25 μM, their cytotoxicity and dose-effect relationship were further studied in a dose-dependent manner. Their structure-activity relationships analysis suggested that the pentacyclic triterpenoids (10, 11, 30-34 and 41) contains two pairs of double bonds on the C & E rings and the ursane-type triterpenoids (25 and 26) with a carbonyl to C-2 and a hydroxyl group at C-3 all showed a considerably Nrf2 activation activity. These results suggested that S. officinalis was worthy of further investigation to find small molecule Nrf2 activators and facilitate their utilization as natural antioxidants.

Abstract
Obesity produces many health problems, including systemic oxidative stress. This study comprehensively investigated the effects of Sanguisorba officinalis L. extract (SO) as an antioxidant on abnormal lipid accumulation and oxidative stress in 3T3-L1 adipocytes and high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice (n = 48). We evaluated the anti-adipogenic and antioxidant effects of SO on 3T3-L1 by cell viability, Oil red O staining, and NBT assays. The ameliorative effects of SO in HFD-induced C57BL/6J mice were investigated by measuring body weight, serum lipids, adipocyte size, hepatic steatosis, AMPK pathway-related proteins, and thermogenic factors. In addition, the effect of SO on oxidative stress in obese mice was evaluated by the activity of antioxidant enzymes and the production of lipid peroxidation products and ROS production in adipose tissue. We found that SO dose-dependently decreased lipid accumulation and ROS production in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. In C57BL/6J obese mice, SO (above 200 mg/kg) attenuated the HFD-induced gain in body weight and white adipose tissue (WAT) weight without affecting appetite. SO also decreased serum glucose, lipid, and leptin levels and attenuated adipocyte hypertrophy and hepatic steatosis. Furthermore, SO increased the expression of SOD1 and SOD2 in WAT, decreased ROS and lipid peroxides, and activated the AMPK pathway and thermogenic factors. In summary, SO reduces oxidative stress in adipose tissue by increasing antioxidant enzyme activity and improves obesity symptoms through AMPK-pathway-regulated energy metabolism and mitochondrial respiratory thermogenesis.

Abstract
The most widespread Sanguisorba species are Sanguisorba officinalis L. and Sanguisorba minor Scop. which are also found in the Romanian flora and classified as medicinal plants because of hemostatic, antibacterial, antitumor, antioxidant and antiviral activities. This study aimed to characterize and compare Sanguisorba species in order to highlight which species is more valuable according to phenolic profile and antimicrobial activity. Based on high-performance liquid chromatography equipped with photodiode array detection and mass spectrometry (electrospray ionization) (HPLC-DAD-MS (ESI+)) analysis, it was evident that the ethanol extract obtained from the leaves of S. minor Scop. contains the highest content of phenolic compounds at 160.96 mg/g p.s., followed by the flower and root extract (131.56 mg/g dw and 121.36 mg/g dw, respectively). While in S. officinalis, the highest amount of phenols was recorded in the root extract (127.06 mg/g), followed by the flower and leaves extract (102.31 mg/g and 81.09 mg/g dw, respectively). Our results show that among the two species, S. minor Scop. is richer in phenolic compounds compared with the S. officinalis L. sample. In addition, the antimicrobial potential of each plant organ of Sanguisorba species was investigated. The ethanol extract of S. minor Scop. leaves exhibited better antibacterial activity against all of the bacteria tested, especially on Staphylococcus aureus, with an inhibition zone of 15.33 ± 0.83 mm. Due to the chemical composition and antimicrobial effect, the Sanguisorba species can be used as food supplements with beneficial effects on human health.

Abstract
This experiment was conducted to compare the antibacterial ability and to identify the antibacterial components of different fermented compound Chinese medicine feed additives in order to develop one fermented compound Chinese medicine feed additive product that can effectively alleviate metritis, vaginitis, and mastitis of sows. The Oxford cup method and double dilution method were used to compare the antibacterial ability of three fermented compound Chinese medicine feed additives (A, B, and C). UHPLC-QE-MS-based untargeted metabolomics was used to identify the antibacterial components of fermented compound Chinese medicine feed additives. Results showed that among fermented compound Chinese medicine feed additives A, B, and C, additive A had the strongest ability to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella cholerae suis, Escherichia coli, and Streptococcus agalactiae. The MIC and MBC of additive A were the lowest for Staphylococcus aureus compared to that for the other three pathogens. The concentrations of 23 Chinese medicine ingredients (ellagic acid, guanine, camphor, L-valine, sinapine, dipropylphthalate, 3-hydroxy-5-isopropylidene-3,8-dimethyl-2,3,3a,4,5,8a-hexahydro-6(1H)-azulenone, 7-dihydroxy-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-8-[3,4,5-trihydroxy-6-(hydroxymethyl)oxan-2-yl]-6-(3,4,5-trihydroxyoxan-2-yl)chromen-4-one, acetylcholine, farrerol, pyrogallol, ethyl gallate, demethylwedelolactone, methyl gallate, kaempferide, gallic acid, eriodictyol, threonic acid, inositol, 3′,4′,7-trihydroxyflavanone, taxifolin, asiatic acid, and isorhamnetin) in additive A were significantly (p < 0.05 or p < 0.01) higher than those in additive B, respectively. It is concluded that the mixture composed of 23 active components in fermented compound Chinese medicine feed additive A plays an important role in inhibiting the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella cholerae suis, Escherichia coli, and Streptococcus agalactiae.

Abstract
Matricaria aurea (Loefl.) Schultz Bip. (Asteraceae), known as golden chamomile, has been traditionally used for the treatment of various diseases. In this study, total phenolic, flavonoid, and tannin contents of total extract and different fractions of this plant were determined. The antioxidant, cytotoxic, and antimicrobial activities were also evaluated. Moreover, the phenolic profiles of selected fractions were determined by HPLC and LC-MS/MS analysis. Results demonstrated total phenolic contents of 37.8-57.2 mg GAE/g and total flavonoid contents of 3.0-111.2 mg QE/g. The ethyl acetate and methanol fractions (EF and MF) had the highest concentrations of phenolic, tannin, and flavonoid compounds. In both DPPH radical scavenging assay and phosphomolybdenum reduction assay, EF showed the best antioxidant activity, followed by MF. EF and MF indicated also the best antibacterial activities against Bacillus subtilis (MIC 1.56 and 12.5 mg ml-1) and Staphylococcus aureus (MIC 0.78 and 12.5 mg ml-1). Hexane fraction (HF) had no antibacterial effect. None of the samples had antifungal effect. MTT (3-(4,5-dimethyl-thiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) assay revealed for EF and HF the highest antiproliferative activities (IC50 values ranged from 111.8 to 294.6 μg ml-1). The presence of chlorogenic acid, ferulic acid, and luteolin-7-O-glucoside in MF, and p-coumaric acid in EF was confirmed and quantified.

Abstract
Vine tea (Ampelopsis grossedentata) is a tea plant cultivated south of the Chinese Yangtze River. It has anti-inflammatory properties and is used to normalize blood circulation and detoxification. The leaves of vine tea are the most abundant source of flavonoids, such as dihydromyricetin and myricetin. However, as the main bioactive flavonoid in vine tea, dihydromyricetin was the main focus of previous research. This study aimed to explore the antibacterial activities of vine tea against selected foodborne pathogens. The antimicrobial activity of vine tea extract was evaluated by the agar well diffusion method. Cell membrane integrity and bactericidal kinetics, along with physical damage to the cell membrane, were also observed. The extract was analyzed using a high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detector (HPLC-DAD), and the results were confirmed using a modified version of a previously published method that combined liquid chromatography and electrospray-ionized quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-ESI-QTOF/MS). Cell membrane integrity and bactericidal kinetics were determined by releasing intracellular material in suspension and monitoring it at 260 nm using an ultraviolet (UV) spectrophotometer. A scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to detect morphological alterations and physical damage to the cell membrane. Six compounds were isolated successfully: (1) myricetin (C15H10O8), (2) myricetin 3-O-rhamnoside (C21H20O12), (3) 5,7,8,3,4-pentahydroxyisoflavone (C15H10O7), (4) dihydroquercetin (C15H12O7), (5) 6,8-dihydroxykaempferol (C15H10O8), and (6) ellagic acid glucoside (C20H16O13). Among these bioactive compounds, C15H10O7 was found to have vigorous antimicrobial activity against Bacillus cereus (AS11846) and Staphylococcus aureus (CMCCB26003). A dose-dependent bactericidal kinetics with a higher degree of absorbance at optical density 260 (OD260) was observed when the bacterial suspension was incubated with C15H10O7 for 8 h. Furthermore, a scanning electron microscope study revealed physical damage to the cell membrane. In addition, the action mode of C15H10O7 was on the cell wall of the target microorganism. Together, these results suggest that C15H10O7 has vigorous antimicrobial activity and can be used as a potent antimicrobial agent in the food processing industry.

Abstract
AbstractRubus hyrcanus Juz. (Rosaceae), known as Caspian blackberry, is wildly distributed around the Caspian Sea. This study focused on antioxidant, cytotoxic, and antibacterial activities of total extracts and different fractions from the roots and leaves of this species. The total phenolics and flavonoid contents were also evaluated. Finally, the phenolic profiles of selected fractions were determined using HPLC–DAD and LC–MS/MS. The results indicated that the total phenolics content (TPC) of root total extract (RTE) was 3.5 times that of leaves (340.4 and 102.7 mg GAE/g, respectively). The TPC of three root fractions ranged from 226.6 to 392.9 mg GAE/g, while in leaves fractions, it ranged between 68.3 and 101.8 mg GAE/g. The total extract of leaves had higher contents of total flavonoids than roots (70.5 and 8.9 mg QE/g, respectively). The methanol fractions of both parts had the highest amounts of flavonoids. The root methanol fraction (RMF) had the best antioxidant effect in both DPPH radical scavenging assay (IC50: 9.16 μg ml−1) and total antioxidant capacity test (1010.5 mg ɑTE/g). The RMF and RTE had potent antibacterial activities against Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus (MIC 1.5 mg ml−1). In the MTT assay, ethyl acetate fractions of roots and leaves exhibited the best cytotoxicity (IC50 247 and 227 μg ml−1, respectively) and the highest selectivity indexes (4.73 and 5.31, respectively). Phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of gallic acid, p-coumaric acid, and chlorogenic acid in leaves ethyl acetate fraction, chlorogenic acid in leaves methanol fraction, and gallic acid in the root ethyl acetate fraction.

Abstract
Genus Sanguisorba (family: Rosaceae) comprises nearly 148 species, distributed widely across the temperate and subtropical regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Sanguisorba officinalis L. (S. officinalis) has been used as a hemostatic and scald treating medicine in China for a long time. Numerous studies have demonstrated that plant extracts or monomers from S. officinalis exhibit several pharmacological effects, such as anti-cancer, anti-virus, anti-inflammation, anti-bacteria, neuroprotective and hepatoprotective effects. The other species of genus Sanguisorba are also being studied by researchers worldwide. Sanguisorba minor Scop. (S. minor), as an edible wild plant, is a common ingredient of the Mediterranean diet, and its young shoots and leaves are often mixed with traditional vegetables and consumed as salad. Reports on genus Sanguisorba available in the current literature were collected from Google Scholar, Web of Science, Springer, and PubMed. The Plant List (http://www.theplantlist.org./tpl1.1/search?q=Sanguisorba), International Plant Name Index (https://www.ipni.org/?q=Sanguisorba) and Kew Botanical Garden (http://powo.science.kew.org/) were used for obtaining the scientific names and information on the subspecies and cultivars. In recent years, several in vivo and in vitro experiments have been conducted to reveal the active components and effective monomers of S. officinalis and S. minor. To date, more than 270 compounds have been isolated and identified so far from the species belonging to genus Sanguisorba. Numerous reports on the chemical constituents, pharmacologic effects, and toxicity of genus Sanguisorba are available in the literature. This review provides a comprehensive understanding of the current traditional applications of plants, which are supported by a large number of scientific experiments. Owing to these promising properties, this species is used in the treatment of various diseases, including influenza virus infection, inflammation, Alzheimer's disease, type 2 diabetes and leukopenia caused by bone marrow suppression. Moreover, the rich contents and biological effects of S. officinalis and S. minor facilitate these applications in dietary supplements and cosmetics. Therefore, the purpose of this review is to summarize the recent advances in the traditional uses, chemical constituents, pharmacological effects and clinical applications of genus Sanguisorba. The present comprehensive review may provide new insights for the future research on genus Sanguisorba.

Abstract
Numerous plant compounds and their metal-ion complexes exert antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and other beneficial effects. This review highlights the different bioactivities of flavonoids, chromones, and coumarins and their metal-ions complexes due to different structural characteristics. In addition to insight into the most studied antioxidative properties of these compounds, the first part of the review provides a comprehensive overview of exogenous and endogenous sources of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, oxidative stress-mediated damages of lipids and proteins, and on protective roles of antioxidant defense systems, including plant-derived antioxidants. Abstract
BACKGROUND Multidrug-resistant pathogens are resistant to many antibiotics and associated with serious infections. Amomum tsaoko Crevost et Lemaire, Sanguisorba officinalis, Terminalia chebula Retz and Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge, are all used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) against multidrug-resistant pathogens, and the purpose of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial and anti-virulence activity of extracts derived from them. METHODS The antibacterial activity of ethanol and aqueous extracts from these four plants was examined against several multi-drug resistant bacterial strains, and their anti-virulence potential (including quorum quenching activity, biofilm inhibition, and blocking production of virulence factor δ-toxin) was assessed against different S. aureus strains. The chemical composition of the most effective extract was determined by LC-FTMS. RESULTS Only extracts from S. officinalis and A. tsaoko were shown to exhibit limited growth inhibition activity at a dose of 256 μg·mL-1. The S. officinalis ethanol extract, the ethanol and aqueous extract of A. tsaoko, and the aqueous extract of S. miltiorrhiza all demonstrated quorum quenching activity, but didn't significantly inhibit bacterial growth. The ethanol extract of S. officinalis inhibited bacterial toxin production and biofilm formation at low concentrations. Chemical composition analysis of the most effective extract of S. officinalis showed that it mainly contained saponins. CONCLUSIONS The most active extract tested in this study was the ethanol root extract of S. officinalis. It inhibited δ-toxin production and biofilm formation at low concentrations and saponins may be its key active components. While the four plants showed no direct antibacterial effects, their anti-virulence properties may be key to fighting bacterial infections.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to accurately determine the profile of polyphenols using the highly sensitive LC-DAD-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS technique and to determine in vitro antioxidant activity, the ability of inhibition of α-amylase, α-glucoamylase, and pancreatic lipase activity, and antiproliferative activity in leaves, flowers, roots, and stalks of medical plant Sanguisorba officinalis L. The results of the analysis of the morphological parts indicated the presence of 130 polyphenols, including 62 that were detected in S. officinalis L. for the first time. The prevailing group was tannins, with contents ranging from 66.4% of total polyphenols in the flowers to 43.3% in the stalks. The highest content of polyphenols was identified in the flowers and reached 14,444.97 mg/100 g d.b., while the lowest was noted in the stalks and reached 4606.33 mg/100 g d.b. In turn, the highest values of the antiradical and reducing capacities were determined in the leaves and reached 6.63 and 0.30 mmol TE/g d.b, respectively. In turn, a high ability to inhibit activities of α-amylase and α-glucoamylase was noted in the flowers, while a high ability to inhibit the activity of pancreatic lipase was demonstrated in the leaves of S. officinalis L. In addition, the leaves and the flowers showed the most effective antiproliferative properties in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, colorectal adenocarcinoma, bladder cancer, and T-cell leukemia cells, whereas the weakest activity was noted in the stalks. Thus, the best dietetic material to be used when composing functional foods were the leaves and the flowers of S. officinalis L., while the roots and the stalks were equally valuable plant materials.

Abstract
Sanguisorba officinalis L. (family Rosaceae, subfamily Rosoideae) is a plant found throughout Southern Europe, Northern Africa, and Eastern Asia. This study demonstrated the antibacterial activity of a purified polyphenolic extract (PPE) from S. officinalis L. against Bacillus subtilis using growth inhibitory and apoptosis assays, and investigated the antibacterial mechanism responsible for changes in cell membrane properties. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy suggested that PPE altered the cell wall and membrane properties of B. subtilis. Further determination of cell membrane integrity and permeability revealed that B. subtilis membrane integrity was more severely damaged by PPE at the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) than at the minimum bactericidal concentrati on (MBC). Instead, PPE at the MBC reduced cell membrane fluidity by significantly decreasing the proportion of anteiso- and iso-branched phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) from 64.17 ± 0.28% and 27.23 ± 0.03% in the control to 5.57 ± 1.06% and 6.00 ± 1.40%, respectively (P < 0.001). Scanning electron microscopy revealed different effects of PPE on cell morphology, demonstrating that, at the MIC and MBC, PPE exerted antibacterial activity by disrupting the cell membrane and reducing cell membrane fluidity, respectively. Consequently, this study elucidated changes in the bacterial membrane due to exposure to PPE and its potential use as an antimicrobial agent. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The abuse of synthetic chemical preservatives raises food safety concerns; however, plant-derived polyphenolic compounds may be a safe and effective alternative. This study demonstrated the strong antibacterial activity of a purified polyphenolic extract (PPE) of Sanguisorba officinalis L. and revealed its antibacterial mechanism against Bacillus subtilis, suggesting that it may provide a useful antimicrobial agent in food industry applications.

Abstract
In this study, the chemical characterization and bioactive properties of S. minor cultivated under different fertilization rates (control, half rate and full rate) were evaluated. Twenty-two phenolic compounds were identified, including five phenolic acids, seven flavonoids and ten tannins. Hydrolysable tannins were prevalent, namely Sanguiin H-10, especially in leaves without fertilization (control). Roots of full-rate fertilizer (660 Kg/ha) presented the highest flavonoid content, mainly catechin and its isomers, whereas half-rate fertilizer (330 Kg/ha), presented the highest content of total phenolic compounds, due to the higher amount of ellagitannins (lambertianin C: 84 ± 1 mg/g of dry extract). Antimicrobial activities were also promising, especially against Salmonella typhimurium (MBC = 0.44 mg/mL). Moreover, root samples revealed activity against all tested cell lines regardless of fertilization rate, whereas leaves were effective only against HeLa cell line. In conclusion, S. minor could be a source of natural bioactive compounds, while fertilization could increase phenolic compounds content.

Abstract
Plant extracts contain large amounts of bioactive compounds, mainly polyphenols. Polyphenols inhibit the growth of microorganisms, especially bacteria. Their mechanism of action is still not fully understood but may be related to their chemical structure. They can cause morphological changes in microorganisms, damage bacterial cell walls and influence biofilm formation. Polyphenols also influence protein biosynthesis, change metabolic processes in bacteria cells and inhibit ATP and DNA synthesis (suppressing DNA gyrase). Due to the antioxidant and antibacterial activity of phenolic compounds, plant extracts offer an alternative to chemical preservatives used in the meat industry, especially nitrates (III). They can inhibit the growth of spoilage and pathogenic microflora, suppress oxidation of meat ingredients (lipids and proteins) and prevent discoloration. In this paper, we describe the factors that influence the content of polyphenols in plants and plant extracts. We present the antimicrobial activities of plant extracts and their mechanisms of action, and discuss the effects of plant extracts on the shelf-life of meat and meat products.

Abstract
Dihydromyricetin (DMY) has recently attracted increased interest due to its considerable health-promoting activities but there are few reports on its antibacterial activity and mechanism. In this paper, the activity and mechanisms of DMY from Ampelopsis grossedentata leaves against food-borne bacteria are investigated. Moreover, the effects of pH, thermal-processing, and metal ions on the antibacterial activity of DMY are also evaluated. The results show that DMY exhibits ideal antibacterial activity on five types of food-borne bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, Salmonella paratyphi, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa). The activities of DMY against bacteria are extremely sensitive to pH, thermal-processing, and metal ions. The morphology of the tested bacteria is changed and damaged more seriously with the exposure time of DMY. Furthermore, the results of the oxidative respiratory metabolism assay and the integrity of the cell membrane and wall tests revealed that the death of bacteria caused by DMY might be due to lysis of the cell wall, leakage of intracellular ingredients, and inhibition of the tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA) pathway.
