Microcosm evaluation of the toxicity and risk to aquatic macrophytes from perfluorooctane sulfonic acid

Fate and effects of a new generation fluorosurfactant (cC6O4) in freshwater mesocosms

Per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) have raised international concerns due to their widespread use, environmental persistence and potential bioaccumulative and ecotoxicological effects. Therefore, the chemical industry has been dedicated to develop new generation fluorosurfactants which are aimed to replace the most concerning PFAS. Here we investigated the fate and effects of cyclic C6O4 (cC6O4), a compound used as alternative to long-chain perfluorocarboxylic acids, in freshwater mesocosms located in the Mediterranean region (Spain) over a period of 90 days. cC6O4 was applied as ammonium salt once at the following nominal concentrations: 0 µg/L (control), 1 µg/L, 20 µg/L, 400 µg/L, and 8,000 µg/L. The study shows that cC6O4 is relatively persistent in water (dissipation: 34-37 % after 90 days), has very low sorption capacity to sediments (sediment-water partition coefficient: 0.18-0.32 L/kg) and very limited bioconcentration (BCF: 0.09-0.94), bioaccumulation (BAF: 0.09-4.06) and biomagnification (BMF: 0.05-0.28) potential. cC6O4 did not result in significant adverse effects on aquatic populations and communities of phytoplankton and zooplankton at the tested concentrations. As for the macroinvertebrate community, the ephemeropteran Cloeon sp. showed a population decline at the highest test concentration on day 60 onwards, and a significant effect on the macroinvertebrate community was identified on the last sampling day at the same exposure level. Therefore, the calculated NOEC for cC6O4 in freshwater mesocosms exposed over a period of 90 days was 400 µg/L, which corresponded to a time weighted average concentration of 611 µg/L, given the water evaporation in the test systems. This concentration is about an order of magnitude higher than the highest exposure concentration monitored in freshwater ecosystems. Therefore, it can be concluded that cC6O4 poses insignificant ecological risks for freshwater plankton and macroinvertebrate communities given the current environmental exposure levels.

Toxicity of Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances to Aquatic Invertebrates, Planktons, and Microorganisms

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), recognized worldwide as emerging pollutants, may pose a substantial threat to human health and our environment due to their stability, high concentrations, wide distribution, and easy accumulation. Ever since perfluorooctane sulfonate and perfluorooctanoic acid were recognized by the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, the public has become increasingly concerned about potential contamination and the environmental risks associated with PFASs. Ubiquitous PFAS contamination of drinking water, groundwater, surface water, and sediment has been detected, especially in areas with rapid industrial and economic development. Its accumulation in living organisms and foods has accentuated the importance of investigations into aquatic organisms at the bottom of the food chain, as the stability and integrity of the food web as well as the population quantity and structure of the aquatic ecosystem may be affected. This review provides a comprehensive summary of the toxic and toxicity-related effects of PFASs on aquatic plankton, aquatic invertebrates and microorganisms, the characteristics of different target aquatic organisms in toxicity investigations, and a feasibility evaluation of PFAS substitutes to provide valuable suggestions for further utilization and regulation of PFASs and their substitutes.

The effect of environmentally relevant emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances on the growth and antioxidant response in marine Chlorella sp

The 6:2 chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonic acids (6:2 Cl-PFAES), 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoro-2-(1,1,2,2,3,3,3-heptafluoropropoxy)-propanoic acid (HFPO-DA) and perfluoroethylcyclohexane sulfonate (PFECHS) are emerging per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) that are being applied to replace phased-out PFASs, which have high persistency, high bioaccumulation potential and high toxicity. Recently, these emerging PFASs were observed in estuary and marine areas with a pollution level of ng/L. In this study, three levels (10 ng L^-1, 100 ng L^-1 and 1000 ng L^-1) for these PFASs were selected to investigate the response of marine Chlorella sp. to 14 days of exposure. The growth of Chlorella sp. was significantly inhibited by each PFAS over time. Treatments with 1000 ng/L exposure caused the most severe reduction in growth for each PFAS treatment. For the first half of the experimental period (from Day 0 to Day 6), the influence of each PFAS was not significant (p > 0.05). However, treatments with all concentrations of 6:2 Cl-PFAES, HFPO-DA and 1000 ng L^-1 PFECHS significantly reduced the growth of Chlorella sp. from Day 8. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities in Chlorella sp. were significantly increased (p < 0.05) when exposed to 6:2 Cl-PFAES, HFPO-DA and PFECHS. The catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD) activities in Chlorella sp. were significantly inhibited (p < 0.05) by each PFAS. The glutathione (GSH) contents in Chlorella sp. were significantly increased by each PFAS. However, the increases in GSH concentration in Chlorella sp. were low. The inhibition of algal growth was primarily due to the reduction of the activities of CAT and POD. PFECHS had the lowest toxicity among the three PFASs, and it induced less oxidized damage to Chlorella sp. In conclusion, as alternatives to phased-out PFASs, the emerging PFASs are not safe in aquatic environment, and attention should be paid to the management and restriction of these emerging PFASs.

Characterization of the fate and distribution of ethiprole in water-fish-sediment microcosm using a fugacity model

A novel, relatively simple and effective three-compartment level IV fugacity model was developed to quantitatively describe the fate, transformation and transport of ethiprole in an aquatic system. Chemical equilibrium was assumed to apply within each bulk compartment. Expressions are included for degradation reactions, advective flow, emission, and interphase transport by non-diffusive and diffusive processes. The simulated results closely matched the results obtained from the experiments. The model indicated that at 25°C (day:night=12h:12h), after approximately 672h, Results of the model calculations showed that the ethiprole was degraded by both photolysis and microorganisms in the water accounts for 86.8% (account for 90.4%, 95.4% in Beijing (BJ) and Hunan (HN) microcosm respectively) of the total removal, the ethiprole was removed by advective outflow accounts for 0.15% (accounts for 0.05%, 0.1% in HN and BJ microcosm respectively) of the total removal, the ethiprole were removed by biodegradation in sediment and fish, accounts for 8.54% and 5.55% (accounts for 2.52% and 2.03%, 5.6% and 3.7% in HN and BJ microcosm respectively) of the total removal respectively in HLJ microcosm. It indicates that biodegradation and photolysis in the water phase were the most important removal process, and most of the ethiprole was distributed in the water phase. A sensitivity analysis of the input parameters indicates that the Henry's law constant (H) and octanol-water partition coefficient (K_ow) parameters are the both most sensitive to the ethiprole concentration in the medium, which suggests that the H and K_ow have important impact on both the distribution and variance of the contaminant concentration. The mass balance under steady-state conditions showed that over 90% of ethiprole stay in water for all microcosm. This finding demonstrates that water plays a key role in the fate of ethiprole, acting as the major sink for contaminants in the stimulation system.

Ecological effect and risk towards aquatic plants induced by perfluoroalkyl substances: Bridging natural to culturing flora

In the present study, the concentrations and proportions of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) in water and sediments (in different seasons) from the Qing River were investigated. The highest concentration of PFASs in water (207.59 ng L^-1) was found in summer. The composition of PFASs in water changed with time, perfluorobutane sulfonate (PFBS) was the predominant compound in spring and summer, while long-chain PFASs, perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), started to increase in autumn and winter. The PFASs concentration in sediments ranged from 0.96 to 4.05 ng g^-1 dw. The proportion of long-chain PFASs was higher than that of short-chain PFASs in sediments, the dominant component in sediments was PFOA with a contribution of 24.6-75.4% to total PFASs in sediments, followed by PFOS. The concentrations of PFASs in roots of emergent plants were relatively higher than those in submerged plants. However, the translocation effect of PFASs was not remarkable. Bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) of the aquatic plants indicated the absorption of PFASs were effective. BAFs in submerged plants basically increased with increasing chain length accordingly. In general, aquatic plants had the absorption preference for long-chain PFASs, especially PFOS, which was the predominant compounds in both submerged and emergent plants. Based on the results above, hornworts were selected to be cultivated indoor in the nutrient solution spiked gradient concentrations of PFOS to assess the general ecological risk. The results revealed that hornworts were resistant to PFOS and might be used as remediation flora to eliminate PFOS contamination.

Bacterial community compositions in sediment polluted by perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) using Illumina high-throughput sequencing

The characterization of bacterial community compositions and the change in perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) along a natural river distribution system were explored in the present study. Illumina high-throughput sequencing was used to explore bacterial community diversity and structure in sediment polluted by PFAAs from the Xiaoqing River, the area with concentrated fluorochemical facilities in China. The concentration of PFAAs was in the range of 8.44-465.60 ng/g dry weight (dw) in sediment. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) was the dominant PFAA in all samples, which accounted for 94.2 % of total PFAAs. High-level PFOA could lead to an obvious increase in relative abundance of Proteobacteria, ε-Proteobacteria, Thiobacillus, and Sulfurimonas and the decrease in relative abundance of other bacteria. Redundancy analysis revealed that PFOA played an important role in the formation of bacterial community, and PFOA at higher concentration could reduce the diversity of bacterial community. When the concentration of PFOA was below 100 ng/g dw in sediment, no significant effect on microbial community structure was observed. Thiobacillus and Sulfurimonas were positively correlated with the concentration of PFOA, suggesting that both genera were resistant to PFOA contamination.

Chronic effects of PFOA and PFOS on sexual reproduction of freshwater rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus

Rotifers play an important role in the dynamics of freshwater and coastal marine ecosystems, and are also important tools for assessing toxicity in aquatic environments. In this study, the effects of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) on the population growth rate and resting egg production of rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus were investigated. Reproductive bioassays indicated that PFOS increased the rotifer population growth rate at the concentration ⩽2.0 mg L(-1), and inhibited it at higher concentrations. For PFOA, the inhibition of population growth rate was observed when the concentration was greater than 4.0 mg L(-1). Exposure to PFOS (0.25 mg L(-1)) or PFOA (2.0 mg L(-1)) increased the mictic ratios of unexposed rotifer offspring. Population variation and increased mictic ratios were likely the two major factors leading to decline of resting egg production. The resting eggs formed under exposure to PFOA/PFOS in the range of 0.125-2.0 mg L(-1) showed higher hatching percentages in the control medium than that without PFOA/PFOS exposure. When the resting eggs were formed in the control medium and incubated in media with different levels of PFOA/PFOS, higher hatching percentages were induced by PFOS but lower hatching percentages induced by PFOA. The effects on the hatching rate of resting eggs with PFOA/PFOS exposure during the hatching period were greater than those with exposure during resting egg formation period, and the effect of PFOS was greater than that of PFOA. Both PFOA and PFOS exhibited slight effect on the hatching pattern.

Development of PFOS and PFOA criteria for the protection of freshwater aquatic life in China

Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are two widely used perfluorinated compounds. They have been detected in various environmental media and have harmed aquatic life and systems. The toxic effects of PFOS and PFOA on freshwater organisms were explored with the goal of protecting aquatic ecosystems in this study. Data from acute toxicity tests using nine aquatic species and chronic toxicity tests using three species were analyzed, along with PFOS and PFOA toxicity data for representative Chinese aquatic biota that have been published in the Chinese and international literature. Using the method recommended by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), the criterion maximum concentration (CMC) for PFOS was calculated to be 3.78 mg/L, and the criterion continuous concentration (CCC) was calculated to be 0.25mg/L. For PFOA, the CMC was calculated to be 45.54 mg/L, and the CCC was calculated to be 3.52 mg/L. The criteria derived in this study provide the scientific basis for development of water quality standards and aquatic ecosystem risk evaluation.

Toxicity of mixtures of perfluorooctane sulphonic acid with chlorinated chemicals and lipid regulators

The toxicological interaction of perfluorooctane sulphonic acid (PFOS) with the chlorinated pollutants triclosan and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol and the lipid regulators gemfibrozil and bezafibrate was evaluated using the combination index-isobologram equation. The endpoint for bioassays was the growth rate inhibition of the green alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata. The results showed that most of the binary combinations assayed exhibited antagonism at all effect levels. The addition of a third component induced a less antagonistic or even synergistic behaviour. This was particularly marked for the ternary mixture of triclosan and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol with PFOS, for which synergism was very strong at all effect levels, with a combination index as low as 0.034 ± 0.002 at EC(50) for the mixture. The results obtained indicate that the evaluation of mixture toxicity from single component data using the concentration addition approach could severely underestimate combined toxicity.

Toxicity of polyfluorinated and perfluorinated compounds to lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and green algae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata)

Recently, polyfluorinated and perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) have been detected in most surface waters around the world. Because some PFCs are persistent and tend to accumulate in surface waters, their potential adverse effects to aquatic organisms have received increasing attention. Nevertheless, currently available toxicity information is limited. The aim of this study was to evaluate the toxicity effects of seven PFCs on root elongation of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and photosynthesis of green algae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata). It was found that the toxicity profiles of both species tested were similar and had good relations with the fluorinated carbon-chain length of the PFCs investigated. One of the compounds tested, perfluorobutanoic acid, was found to be more toxic than expected in the algae test, which may be related with acidification of the test solution. It was concluded that because short-chained PFCs are becoming the predominant PFC pollutants in surface waters, their long-term toxicity and mixture toxicity with other PFCs should be studied in greater detail.

Aquatic predicted no-effect-concentration derivation for perfluorooctane sulfonic acid

Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), a representative perfluorinated surfactant, is an anthropogenic pollutant detected in various environmental and biological matrices. Some laboratory and field work has been conducted to assess the aquatic toxicity of PFOS, but little is known regarding its toxicity threshold to the aquatic ecosystem. In the present study, predicted no-effect concentrations (PNECs) were derived by four different approaches. The interspecies correlation estimation (ICE) program and final acute-to-chronic ratio (FACR) were applied to the development of PNEC based on the toxic mode of action (MOA) of PFOS. By comparison of the different PNECs, the recommended aquatic toxicity thresholds for PFOS are in the range of 0.61 to 6.66 µg/L. Based on comparison of PNEC values, microcosm results, and reported environmental concentrations, PFOS appears not to pose a serious threat to aquatic organisms. The present results demonstrate that MOA is an important consideration for the derivation of reliable PNECs; moreover, the ICE-based species sensitivity distribution (SSD) method can be used to derive PNECs when toxicological data are limited. The application of MOA and ICE for deriving PNEC values in the present study may facilitate studies on using a combination of quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models and ICE to estimate PNECs.

Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) in groundwater and aqueous soil extracts: using inline SPE-LC-MS/MS for screening and sorption characterisation of perfluorooctane sulphonate and related compounds

Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) have been recognised as emerging pollutants of global relevance. A fully automated method with inline solid-phase extraction coupled to electrospray ionisation liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (SPE-LC-MS/MS) is presented and used for characterisation of soil adsorption and desorption for six PFCs: perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), perfluorodecanoic acid (PFDA), perfluorobutane sulphonate (PFBS), and perfluorooctane sulphonate (PFOS). The method reduces sample turnaround time and solvent consumption and is suitable for low volume sampling. The only sample preparation necessary for water samples was sedimentation by centrifugation. The method has a total runtime of 21 min including inline sample cleanup (2 min for injection and SPE, 14 min for the chromatographic separation, 5 min for reconditioning). Negative AP-ESI with selective reaction monitoring (SRM) was used and the method was documented for quantification of the six environmentally important PFCs in subsoil matrix and related aqueous matrixes (groundwater and drainage water). Linearity was demonstrated in the range 5 to 2,500 ng/l and the LOD was between 2 and 8 ng/l in groundwater. Adsorption was characterised by linear Freundlich isotherms for all six compounds in two agricultural top soils (A horizon, sandy and clayey soil).Variability in sorption characteristics for soil types as well as compound properties were found, and correlation between the organic carbon normalised sorption coefficient (K (OC)) and PFC molecular weight was demonstrated. The K (d) values were in the range 0.1 to 33 (l/kg), and 0.3 to 65 (l/kg) for sorption and desorption respectively.

Acute toxicity assessment of perfluorinated carboxylic acids towards the Baltic microalgae

The presence of high-energy carbon-fluorine bonds in perfluoro compounds lends them great stability and causes them to be environmentally persistent. Relatively little is known about the acute toxicity of perfluorinated carboxylic acids (PFCAs) to ecotoxicological markers such as aquatic plants and animals. This study tested the toxicity of these compounds to the green alga Chlorella vulgaris, the diatom Skeletonema marinoi and the blue-green alga Geitlerinema amphibium, which are species representative of the algal flora of the Baltic Sea. The EC(50) values obtained range from 0.28 mM to 12.84 mM. A distinct relationship between hydrophobicity and toxicity is demonstrated. For every extra perfluoromethylene group in the alkyl chain, the toxicity increases twofold. LogEC(50) values are very well correlated linearly with both the number of carbon atoms in the perfluoroalkyl chain and the partition coefficients. The results also indicate that there are clear differences between the responses of particular taxonomic groups of algae: blue-green algae and diatoms are far more sensitive to PFCAs than green algae, probably because of differences in cell wall structure.

Toxicity of perfluorooctane sulfonate and perfluorooctanoic acid to plants and aquatic invertebrates

Acute toxicities of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) were tested on four freshwater species and three plant species. PFOS was more toxic than PFOA for all species tested in this study. Similar time-response patterns of PFOS and PFOA toxicity were observed for each tested species. Values of the 48-h LC(50) of PFOS for all test species ranged from 27 to 233 mg/L and values of the 96-h LC(50) for three of the species ranged from 10 to 178 mg/L. Values of the 48-h LC(50) of PFOA for all test species ranged from 181 to 732 mg/L and values of the 96-h LC(50) for three of the species ranged from 337 to 672 mg/L. The most sensitive freshwater species to PFOS was green neon shrimp (Neocaridina denticulate) with a 96-h LC(50) of 10 mg/L. Of the aquatic organisms tested, the aquatic snail (Physa acuta) always has the highest resistance to PFOS or PFOA toxicity over each exposure period. Both PFOS and PFOA had no obvious adverse effect on seed germination for all three plant species. Five-day EC(50) of root elongation was more sensitive to LC(50) of seed germination in this study. Based on EC(10), EC(50), and NOECs, the 5-day root elongation sensitivity of test plants to both PFOS and PFOA was in the order of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) > pakchoi (Brassica rapa chinensis) > cucumber (Cucumis sativus). Based on the results of this study and other published literature, it is suggested that current PFOS and PFOA levels in freshwater may have no acute harmful ecological impact on the aquatic environment. However, more research on the long-term ecological effects of PFOS and PFOA on aquatic fauna are needed to provide important information to adequately assess ecological risk of PFOS and PFOA.

Effects of planting system design on the toxicological sensitivity of Myriophyllum spicatum and Elodea canadensis to atrazine

The triazine herbicide atrazine (2-chloro-4-ethylamino-6-isopropylamino-s-trazine) was selected as a chemical stressor in an investigation of how toxicological responses of individually grown macrophytes reflect those of plants grown in more natural model populations and two-species communities. Phytotoxicity of the compound to Myriophyllumspicatum L. and Elodeacanadensis Michx. was assessed under semi-natural field conditions using 12000l outdoor microcosms. Exposure concentrations of 25, 50, 100, 250microgl(-1) plus controls (n=3) were evaluated, selected to fall within a range of concentrations known to produce a toxic response in the tested macrophytes, and effective concentrations required to cause a decrease in biomass endpoints by 10%, 25%, and 50% were estimated. The sensitivities of aquatic plants to atrazine did not differ substantially between planting systems, and few interactions between the effects of the planting method and atrazine effects on macrophyte biomass were detected using a two-way ANOVA. A lack of significant differences in biomass and relative growth rate measures between plants grown under the various test systems also indicated that interactions between and among species did not influence growth of plants in the model population and communities. Under these test conditions, the use of the "cone-tainer" method provided estimates of toxicity consistent with those from plants grown in assemblages, and potential interactions between plants were not found to modify the response of macrophytes to atrazine.

The study of distribution and fate of nitrobenzene in a water/sediment microcosm

In November 2005, an explosion occurred at a petrochemical plant of the Jilin Petrochemical Corporation in Jilin Province, China. A nearby water body was seriously polluted with a large spill of toxic substances made up of a mixture of benzene, aniline, and nitrobenzene (NB). To understand the long term impact of NB on public health and ecosystem around the Songhua River, it was necessary to investigate its fate in the environment. In this study, a microcosm was used to mimic the polluted water system and to study the transport and fate of NB in the river water body. The volatility and biodegradation of NB was investigated and a Markov model was applied to predict the fate of NB in the environment. The simulated results matched very well with the results obtained from the microcosm experiment. The model indicated that at room temperature and after around 500 h, there was only residual NB in the water and sediment. Most of the NB (around 82%) evaporated into the air and 18% was degraded by microorganisms.

Ecotoxicological evaluation of perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS)

Based on available toxicity data, protective screening-level concentrations of PFOS were calculated for aquatic and terrestrial organisms. Using the Great Lakes Initiative, water concentrations of PFOS were calculated to protect aquatic plants and animals. The screening plant value (SPV) protective of aquatic algae and macrophytes was calculated as 2.3 mg PFOS/L. The secondary chronic value protective of aquatic organisms was 1.2 microg PFOS/L. The screening-value water concentrations less than or equal to 1.2 microg PFOS/L would not pose a potential risk to aquatic organisms. Because the aquatic benchmark is based on the most sensitive species, this benchmark should also be protective of other aquatic organisms, including amphibians. The tissue-based TRV for fish was determined to be 87 mg PFOS/kg ww. For terrestrial plants, a screening benchmark was determined to be 1.3 mg PFOS/kg soil ww or 1.5 mg PFOS/kg soil dw, whereas for soil invertebrates such as earthworms the benchmark value was 39 mg PFOS/kg dw soil or 33 mg PFOS/kgww soil. For avian species, dietary, ADI, and egg yolk-based benchmarks were determined as 0.28mg PFOS/kg diet, 0.021mg PFOS/kg bw/d, and 1.7 microg PFOS/mL yolk, respectively. Benchmarks for serum and liver for the protection of avian species were 1.0 microg PFOS/mL and 0.6 microg PFOS/gww, respectively. However, no-effect levels in laboratory studies suggest actual population-level effects would not be expected to occur until a concentration of 6.0mg PFOS/kg in the diet, 5.0 microg PFOS/gww in the liver, or 9.0 microg PFOS/mL in the serum was exceeded, thus indicating the conservative nature of the benchmarks.

Microcosm evaluation of the fate, toxicity, and risk to aquatic macrophytes from perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is an anthropogenic contaminant detected in various environmental and biological matrices. This compound is a fluorinated surfactant, belonging to a class of molecules known for persistence and their global distribution, but for which little ecotoxicological data are currently available, especially under field conditions. The environmental fate and toxicity of PFOA to the aquatic macrophytes Myriophyllum sibiricum and M. spicatum were investigated using 12,000 L outdoor microcosms. Replicate microcosms (n = 3) were treated with 0.3, 1, 30, and 100 mg/L PFOA as the sodium salt, plus controls, and assessed at regular intervals over 35 days. PFOA showed no significant dissipation from the water column, except at the greatest concentration, where partitioning from the water column into other compartments is suspected. The two species of Myriophyllum were similar in their sensitivity to PFOA under these simulated field conditions. Toxicity after 14 to 35 days of exposure in the evaluated endpoints for M. spicatum was > or = 5.7 mg/L PFOA for EC10s and > or = 31.8 mg/L PFOA for EC50s and in M. sibiricum was > or = 8.4 mg/L PFOA for EC10s and > or = 35.8 mg/L PFOA for EC50s. The no observed effects concentrations (NOECs) for Myriophyllum spp. were consistently > or = 23.9 mg/L PFOA. A risk assessment for these plant species estimated a negligible probability of toxicity being observed from PFOA exposure at current environmental concentrations.
