Abstract
BACKGROUND An estimated 609,820 child-rearing adults in 2023 died from advanced cancer, affecting 153,675 dependent children. Although children are known to suffer significant distress when a parent is diagnosed with cancer, few studies have described parents' views of their adolescent's behavioral response to their advanced cancer or what the parent did to interpret or manage that response. OBJECTIVES To describe patient-reported concerns about their adolescent and how they responded to their adolescent's behavior. METHODS Single occasion interviews were administered to 6 adolescent-rearing parents with Stage IV cancer. Interviews were analyzed using inductive content analysis by trained coders. Trustworthiness of results was protected through peer debriefing, coding to consensus, and maintaining an audit trail. RESULTS The core construct that explained study data was Being There without Taking Over, comprised of 4 domains: Struggling to Read My Child, Attempting to Talk with My Child about My Cancer, Trying to Maintain Optimism, and Understanding My Child. CONCLUSIONS Parents were deeply concerned about the impact of their advanced cancer on their adolescent but were unable to distinguish between cancer-related distress and adolescent angst. They feared initiating cancer-related discussions and struggled with their own feelings of guilt and parental inadequacy but did not turn to professionals for help. SIGNIFICANCE OF RESULTS Adolescent-rearing patients with advanced disease need to be triaged into services that offer a framework from which parents can interpret their child's behavior and learn ways to have adolescent-appropriate conversations about the cancer. Such services should also help parents gain skills to manage feelings of parental inadequacy and guilt. In the absence of services, parents struggle and do not know how to interpret and respond to their adolescent's cancer-related behavior.

Abstract
PURPOSE Parental cancer significantly impacts both parents and children, necessitating psychosocial interventions to enhance family well-being. This systematic review aimed to assess the effectiveness of psychosocial interventions targeting parents with cancer on their mental health, quality of life, their children's well-being, and family functioning. METHODS A comprehensive search was conducted in Ovid MEDLINE, PubMed, PsycINFO, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases for relevant articles published from 2006 to 2023. The methodological aspects of eleven studies from diverse countries were critically evaluated. RESULTS The review included 496 parents, primarily female breast cancer patients, and their children. Narrative synthesis highlighted interventions that aimed to strengthen parent-child connection (Enhancing Connection (EC)), enhance family communication, improve psychological well-being of parents (Struggle for Life Intervention), and address children's mental health (Wonders and Worries (W&W)). Additionally, interventions like Cancer PEPSONE Program (CPP) aimed to expand social networks and support systems. These interventions demonstrated success in reducing depressive and anxiety symptoms, parenting stress, and mitigating children's externalizing and internalizing problems. However, they were not exempt from methodological limitations such as participant selection bias, lack of blinding, and low follow-up rates. CONCLUSIONS Based on the review, psychological support for parents with cancer is an emerging field, predominantly explored in Western countries with a significant emphasis on maternal experiences. The early stage of this field and inherent methodological limitations warrant cautious interpretation of these findings and further research for comprehensive understanding and application.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Balancing having cancer and parenting a major stressor, and may result in parenting distress, negatively affecting the whole family. To provide adequate support, knowledge of existing psychosocial interventions are crucial to guide future interventions. This study aimed to describe available psychosocial interventions for parents with cancer and dependent children (<18 years). METHOD We conducted a systematic review, and four databases were searched from January 2000 to March 2023. RESULTS Thirty studies were included, reporting on 22 psychosocial interventions for parents with cancer. They aimed to improve different aspects of parenting distress, and included psychoeducation and communication strategies. Interventions were beneficial to and acceptable among parents, but only a few had been evaluated. The study quality was, overall, assessed as moderate. CONCLUSIONS The results of this review highlight the diversity of available psychosocial interventions for parents with cancer and the outcomes on parenting distress, as well as methodological challenges.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW When a parent is diagnosed with cancer, the entire family is impacted. Patients with cancer and co-parents may no longer feel able to fulfill their parenting roles. The aims of this article are to describe interventions designed to support parenting in the oncological context and to make suggestions for the development and assessment of such interventions. RECENT FINDINGS Ten parenting support interventions published in the last 10 years in oncology were identified, among which four randomized controlled trials (RCTs). The therapeutic aims, techniques, and modalities of these interventions were heterogeneous. Five main therapeutic aims were addressed to: increase parents' knowledge, promote parents' emotion regulation, enhance parents' self-efficacy related to parenting, promote parents' support of their children's reactions and coping strategies, and promote open and appropriate parent-child communication. Few studies have combined informational resources with experiential techniques. SUMMARY Very few studies examining the efficacy of parenting support interventions have been published. There is still a need to develop, test, and compare interventions that meet the many needs of parents and their children. Suggestions are made about the contents and formats of parenting support interventions in oncology.

Abstract
Social determinants of health (SDOH) contribute to cancer disparities among young Latina women (<50 years) residing in the counties along the US-Mexico border. These SDOH are particularly burdensome to young Latina mothers diagnosed with cancer while they are raising school-age children. Conexiones, a culturally adapted program designed to improve mother and child adjustment to maternal cancer, was piloted with diagnosed Latina mothers residing in border counties in New Mexico and Texas. The purpose of this case analysis was to highlight the SDOH affecting a young Latina mother's cancer survivorship in the U.S.-Mexico border region. The participant's Conexiones education sessions were recorded, transcribed, translated to English, back translated to Spanish to establish accuracy, and inductively coded. The participant's baseline survey indicated she was a young (<50 years), married, Spanish-speaking Latina mother diagnosed with breast cancer while raising a teenage daughter. Seventeen SDOH themes affecting the participant's cancer experience were identified in the cancer-related emotional triggers she reported across five Conexiones sessions. These themes were organized using Yanez's conceptual model of determinants of cancer outcomes in Hispanics (i.e., socioeconomic, healthcare, cultural context, and psychosocial). Findings provide direction for cultural adaptations of evidence-based programs.

Abstract
Resumo Objetivos mapear programas de intervenção para crianças, adolescentes e pais, ou díade (doentes oncológicos e filhos) a vivenciar o cancro parental. Método scoping review segundo a metodologia recomendada pelo Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) e o Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews - Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Resultados foram identificados 29 programas de intervenção: 13 dirigidos à díade, 11 a crianças e adolescentes e 5 dirigidos aos pais. Dos programas identificados, 10 não especificam a tipologia das intervenções propostas, 9 referenciam intervenções psicoeducacionais, 7 referenciam intervenções educacionais e 3 referenciam intervenções do tipo psicossocial. Conclusão e Implicações para a prática verificou-se que a maioria dos programas identificados se dirige à díade crianças/adolescentes e pais. As caraterísticas dos programas e das intervenções diferem entre estudos, no entanto as intervenções psicoeducacionais são as mais prevalentes. O mapeamento de programas de intervenção e promoção da adaptação ao cancro parental contribui para a síntese da evidência existente sobre esta temática, conhecimento sobre as intervenções desenvolvidas e resultados obtidos, consciencializando os profissionais de saúde, nomeadamente enfermeiros, e decisores da área da saúde para a relevância da sua implementação na prática clínica, tendo em vista a qualidade dos cuidados de enfermagem prestados a essas famílias.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Enhancing Connections (EC) is an evidence-based intervention that promotes communication between cancer-diagnosed mothers and their school-age children. EC was validated with college-educated non-Latina White mothers of privileged socioeconomic status. Latina researchers culturally adapted EC for Latina mothers diagnosed with cancer and renamed it Conexiones. Following cultural adaptation guidelines, the next recommended step was to engage the new consumer group (Latina mothers) in evaluating the newly adapted educational materials. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the cognitive and cultural fit of the newly adapted Conexiones educational materials for use with Latina mothers diagnosed with cancer. METHOD Eighteen Latina mothers participated in focus groups evaluating the Conexiones educational materials. An inductive approach was used to identify problem areas and recommendations for corrections to the Conexiones program content. RESULTS Within the cognitive-informational dimension, recommendations were made to improve the ease of comprehension in the Spanish version of the program. Recommendations within the affective-motivational dimension described the cultural adjustments needed to more effectively engage cancer-diagnosed Latina mothers in the Conexiones program. Implications for Practice. Engagement of the new consumer group in evaluating the initial adaptation of Conexiones served to identify additional cognitive-informational and affective-motivational corrections needed to further refine the cultural adaptation of the Conexiones program. This study reinforced the importance of community engagement in evaluating and refining newly adapted evidence-based interventions.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The aim of this study was to evaluate how psychosocial interventions for children aged 0-18 years of a parent with cancer meet their needs, using key needs as consumer-based "standards." METHODS A systematic literature review was conducted. Fifteen interventions met inclusion criteria and were assessed against six key needs identified by Ellis et al. (Eur. J. Cancer Care, 26, 2017, e12432): (1) provide children with age-appropriate information about their parent's cancer; (2) support family communication; (3) normalise and reduce feelings of isolation through peer support; (4) provide a space to share feelings; (5) individually tailor support; and (6), where appropriate, provide specialised bereavement support. RESULTS No intervention clearly met all six needs, but each partially addressed at least two needs, and three clearly met at least four needs. The most commonly addressed need was supporting family communication, and the least addressed need was bereavement support. CONCLUSION Interventions identified in this review addressed some needs of children impacted by a parent's cancer. This research provides a framework to inform the creation, modification and implementation of psychosocial support interventions that best meet the needs of these children, thereby mobilising consumer-focused service provision.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oncology nurses can assist patients in gaining skills and confidence in multiple areas of illness self-management, including parenting skills. Child-rearing parents with cancer are a unique population because they must self-manage their illness and also help their child manage the intrusion of cancer on everyday life. The telephone offers an inexpensive channel for nurses to assist mothers in developing competencies to parent their child. The acceptability and attributed gains from such telephone services are unknown. OBJECTIVE The aims of this study were to (1) describe the gains child-rearing mothers attribute to participation in a nurse-delivered telephone cancer parenting program and (2) assess mothers' evaluation of the telephone as a channel for delivering the program. METHODS Study participants were child-rearing mothers diagnosed with cancer (N = 31) who had completed a manualized telephone-delivered cancer parenting program by a nurse. Mothers were interviewed 1 month after exiting the program by a specially trained interviewer masked on the content of the program. RESULTS Most mothers were white (74%), highly educated, and had breast cancer (93.5%). Mothers attributed gains from the program in 3 areas: (1) being fully present for my child, (2) communicating in new ways, and (3) putting away my assumptions. CONCLUSIONS Communication skills learned from nurses can assist mothers to self-manage the impact of the cancer on their own well-being and add to their parenting skills and competencies to help their children. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE The telephone is an effective and indeed preferred channel for delivering services to child-rearing parents impacted by cancer.
