Effect of Chlorella sorokiniana on the biological denitrification of drinking water

Recirculating packed-bed biofilm photobioreactor combined with membrane ultrafiltration as advanced wastewater treatment

Packed-bed biofilm photobioreactor combined with ultrafiltration membrane was investigated for intensifying the process for secondary wastewater effluent treatment. Cylindrical glass carriers were used as supporting material for the microalgal-bacterial biofilm, which developed from indigenous microbial consortium. Glass carriers allowed adequate growth of the biofilm with limited suspended biomass. Stable operation was achieved after a start-up period of 1000 h, where supernatant biopolymer clusters were minimized and complete nitrification was observed. After that time, biomass productivity was 54 ± 18 mg·L^-1·day^-1. Green microalgae Tetradesmus obliquus and several strains of heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification bacteria and fungi were identified. Combined process exhibited COD, nitrogen and phosphorus removal rates of 56 ± 5%, 12 ± 2% and 20 ± 6%, respectively. Membrane fouling was mainly caused by biofilm formation, which was not effectively mitigated by air-scouring aided backwashing.

Bacterial community structure and metabolic activity of drinking water pipelines in buildings: A new perspective on dual effects of hydrodynamic stagnation and algal organic matter invasion

Eutrophication and algal blooms have become global issues. The drinking water treatment process suffers from pollution by algal organic matter (AOM) through cell lysis during the algal blooms. Nevertheless, it remains unclear how AOM invasion affects water quality and microbial communities in drinking water, particularly in the stagnant settings. In this study, the addition of AOM caused the residual chlorine to rapidly degrade and below the limit of 0.05 mg/L, while the NO₂^--N concentration ranged from 0.11 to 3.71 mg/L. Additionally, total bacterial counts increased and subsequently decreased. The results of Biolog demonstrated that the AOM significantly improved the utilization capacity of carbon sources and changed the preference for carbon sources. Full-length 16S rRNA gene sequencing and network modeling revealed a considerable reduction in the abundance of Proteobacteria, whereas that of Bacteroidetes increased significantly under the influence of AOM. Furthermore, the species abundance distributions of the Microcystis group and Scenedesmus group was most consistent with the Mandelbrot model. According to redundancy analysis and structural equation modeling, the bacterial community structure of the control group was most positively regulated by the free residual chlorine concentrations, whereas the Microcystis group and Scenedesmus group were positively correlated with the total organic carbon (TOC) concentration. Overall, these findings provide a scientific foundation for the evolution of drinking water quality under algae bloom pollution.

Microalgae-bacterial granular consortium: Striding towards sustainable production of biohydrogen coupled with wastewater treatment

Anthropogenic activities have drastically affected the environment, leading to increased waste accumulation in atmospheric bodies, including water. Wastewater treatment is an energy-consuming process and typically requires thousands of kilowatt hours of energy. This enormous energy demand can be fulfilled by utilizing the microbial electrolysis route to breakdown organic pollutants in wastewater which produces clean water and biohydrogen as a by-product of the reaction. Microalgae are the promising microorganism for the biohydrogen production, and it has been investigated that the interaction between microalgae and bacteria can be used to boost the yield of biohydrogen. Consortium of algae and bacteria resulting around 50-60% more biohydrogen production compared to the biohydrogen production of algae and bacteria separately. This review summarises the recent development in different microalgae-bacteria granular consortium systems successfully employed for biohydrogen generation. We also discuss the limitations in biohydrogen production and factors affecting its production from wastewater.

Converting nitrogen and phosphorus wastewater into bioenergy using microalgae-bacteria consortia: A critical review

Conventional wastewater treatment using activated sludge cannot efficiently eliminate nitrogen and phosphorus, thus engendering the risk of water eutrophication and ecosystem disruption. Fortunately, a new wastewater treatment process applying microalgae-bacteria consortia has attracted considerable interests due to its excellent performance of nutrients removal. Moreover, some bacteria facilitate the harvest of microalgal biomass through bio-flocculation. Additionally, while stimulating the functional bacteria, the improved biomass and enriched components also brighten bioenergy production from the perspective of practical applications. Thus, this review first summarizes the current development of nutrients removal and mutualistic interaction using microalgae-bacteria consortia. Then, advancements in bio-flocculation are completely described and the corresponding mechanisms are thoroughly revealed. Eventually, the recent advances of bioenergy production (i.e., biodiesel, biohydrogen, bioethanol, and bioelectricity) using microalgae-bacteria consortia are comprehensively discussed. Together, this review will provide the ongoing challenges and future developmental directions for better converting nitrogen and phosphorus wastewater into bioenergy using microalgae-bacteria consortia.

Interactions of microalgae-bacteria consortia for nutrient removal from wastewater: A review

Nitrogen and phosphorus pollution can cause eutrophication, resulting in ecosystem disruption. Wastewater treatment systems employing microalgae-bacteria consortia have the potential to enhance the nutrient removal efficiency from wastewater through mutual interaction and synergetic effects. The knowledge and control of the mechanisms involved in microalgae-bacteria interaction could improve the system's ability to transform and recover nutrients. In this review, a critical evaluation of recent literature was carried out to synthesize knowledge related to mechanisms of interaction between microalgae and bacteria consortia for nutrient removal from wastewater. It is now established that microalgae can produce oxygen through photosynthesis for bacteria and, in turn, bacteria supply the required metabolites and inorganic carbon source for algae growth. Here we highlight how the interaction between microalgae and bacteria is highly dependent on the nitrogen species in the wastewater. When the nitrogen source is ammonium, the generated oxygen by microalgae has a positive influence on nitrifying bacteria. When the nitrogen source is nitrate, the oxygen can have an inhibitory effect on denitrifying bacteria. However, some strains of microalgae have the capability to supply hydrogen gas for hydrogenotrophic denitrifiers as an energy source. Recent literature on biogranulation of microalgae and bacteria and its application for nutrient removal and biomass recovery is also discussed as a promising approach. Significant research challenges remain for the integration of microalgae-bacteria consortia into wastewater treatment processes including microbial community control and process stability over long time horizons.

Denitrification performance and microbial communities of solid-phase denitrifying reactors using poly (butylene succinate)/bamboo powder composite

This study explored the denitrification performance of solid-phase denitrification (SPD) systems packed with poly (butylene succinate)/bamboo powder composite to treat synthetic aquaculture wastewater under different salinity conditions (0‰ Vs. 25‰). The results showed composite could achieve the maximum denitrification rates of 0.22 kg (salinity, 0‰) and 0.34 kg NO3--N m-3 d-1 (salinity, 25‰) over 200-day operation. No significant nitrite accumulation and less dissolved organic carbon (DOC) release (<15 mg/L) were found. The morphological and spectroscopic analyses demonstrated the mixture composites degradation. Microbial community analysis showed that Acidovorax, Simplicispira, Denitromonas, SM1A02, Marinicella and Formosa were the dominant genera for denitrifying bacteria, while Aspergillus was the major genus for denitrifying fungus. The co-network analysis also indicated the interactions between bacterial and fungal community played an important role in composite degradation and denitrification. The outcomes provided a potential strategy of DOC control and cost reduction for aquaculture nitrate removal by SPD.

Nitrate removal from drinking water with a focus on biological methods: a review

This article summarizes several developed and industrial technologies for nitrate removal from drinking water, including physicochemical and biological techniques, with a focus on autotrophic nitrate removal. Approaches are primarily classified into separation-based and elimination-based methods according to the fate of the nitrate in water treatment. Biological denitrification as a cost-effective and promising method of biological nitrate elimination is reviewed in terms of its removal process, applicability, efficiency, and associated disadvantages. The various pathways during biological nitrate removal, including assimilatory and dissimilatory nitrate reduction, are also explained. A comparative study was carried out to provide a better understanding of the advantages and disadvantages of autotrophic and heterotrophic denitrification. Sulfur-based and hydrogen-based denitrifications, which are the most common autotrophic processes of nitrate removal, are reviewed with the aim of presenting the salient features of hydrogenotrophic denitrification along with some drawbacks of the technology and research areas in which it could be used but currently is not. The application of algae-based water treatment is also introduced as a nature-inspired approach that may broaden future horizons of nitrate removal technology.

Optimal strategies for bioremediation of nitrate-contaminated groundwater and microalgae biomass production

Optimizing the mono-cultivation and mixed cultivation of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, Chlorella vulgaris, and an Ettlia sp. was evaluated for treating nitrate-contaminated groundwater and biomass production. Ettlia sp. showed the highest nutrient assimilation and growth rate among the three microalgae during bioremediation. Light-dark cycle was the effective condition for nutrient removal and COD mitigation by microalgae. Mixed microalgae with a larger presence of the Ettlia sp. exhibited the highest biomass productivity, nitrate-nitrogen, and phosphate-phosphorus removal rates of 0.21 g/L/d, 16.6, and 3.06 mg/L/d, respectively. An N:P mass ratio of 5 was necessary to increase the mixed-microalgal performance. The settling efficiency of the mixed microalgae increased up to 0.55 when using pH modulation during 30 min. Therefore, applying an Ettlia sp.-dominant consortium was the optimum strategy for the bioremediation of nitrate-contaminated groundwater in 3 days.

Phosphorus optimization for simultaneous nitrate-contaminated groundwater treatment and algae biomass production using Ettlia sp

The effects of phosphorus concentration on the cell growth, nutrient assimilation, photosynthetic parameters, and biomass recovery of Ettlia sp. were evaluated with batch experiments using groundwater, 50mg/L of N-NO₃^-, and different concentrations of P-PO₄^3-: 0.5, 2.5, 5, and 10mg/L. The maximum biomass productivity and phosphorus removal rate were 0.2g/L/d and 5.95mg/L/d, respectively, with the highest phosphorus concentration of 10mg/L. However, a phosphorus concentration of 5mg/L (N:P=10) was sufficient to ensure an effective nitrogen removal rate of 11mg/L/d, maximum growth rate of 0.88/d, and biomass recovery of 0.72. The appropriate hydraulic retention time was considered as 4days on a large scale to meet the effluent limitation demands of water. While nitrogen depletion had a significant effect on the photosynthetic parameters and ratio of chlorophyll a to dry cell weight during the stationary phase, the effect of phosphorus was negligible during the cultivation.
