Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal that has been widely reported to be linked to the onset and progression of breast cancer (BC). However, the mechanism of Cd-induced mammary tumorigenesis remains elusive. In our study, a transgenic mouse model that spontaneously develops tumors through overexpression of wild-type Erbb2 (MMTV-Erbb2) was constructed to investigate the effects of Cd exposure on BC tumorigenesis. The results showed that oral exposure to 3.6 mg/L Cd for 23 weeks dramatically accelerated tumor appearance and growth, increased Ki67 density and enhanced focal necrosis and neovascularization in the tumor tissue of MMTV-Erbb2 mice. Notably, Cd exposure enhanced glutamine (Gln) metabolism in tumor tissue, and 6-diazo-5-oxo-l-norleucine (DON), a Gln metabolism antagonist, inhibited Cd-induced breast carcinogenesis. Then our metagenomic sequencing and mass spectrometry-based metabolomics confirmed that Cd exposure disturbed gut microbiota homeostasis, especially Helicobacter and Campylobacter abundance remodeling, which altered the gut metabolic homeostasis of Gln. Moreover, intratumoral Gln metabolism profoundly increased under Cd-elevated gut permeability. Importantly, depletion of microbiota with an antibiotic cocktail (AbX) treatment led to a significant delay in the appearance of palpable tumors, inhibition of tumor growth, decrease in tumor weight, reduction in Ki67 expression and low-grade pathology in Cd-exposed MMTV-Erbb2 mice. Also, transplantation of Cd-modulated microbiota decreased tumor latency, accelerated tumor growth, increased tumor weight, upregulated Ki67 expression and exacerbated neovascularization as well as focal necrosis in MMTV-Erbb2 mice. In summary, Cd exposure induced gut microbiota dysbiosis, elevated gut permeability and increased intratumoral Gln metabolism, leading to the promotion of mammary tumorigenesis. This study provides novel insights into environmental Cd exposure-mediated carcinogenesis.

Abstract
As major nonenzymatic antioxidant components in the body, dietary Zinc (Zn) and Selenium (Se) may have an impact on breast cancer development. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between dietary Zn, Se intake and breast cancer risk in Chinese women. The case-control study included 1591 cases and 1622 age-frequency matched controls. Dietary intake was collected using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Dietary Zn and Se were divided into four categories: Zn/Se from plants, Zn/Se from meat, Zn/Se from red meat, and Zn/Se from white meat. Unconditional logistic regression models and restricted cubic spline analyses were performed to identify potential associations. Zn from white meat intake was linearly and inversely associated with breast cancer risk, and Se from red meat intake was linearly and positively associated with breast cancer risk, with adjusted odds ratio and 95% confidence interval of 0.76 (0.61-0.95) and 1.36 (1.04-1.77), respectively. Non-linear relationships were found between total dietary Zn, Zn from meat, Zn from red meat intake and breast cancer risk (pnon-linearity < 0.05). In conclusion, dietary Zn and Se intake were associated with breast cancer risk in Chinese women, and the optimal intake of Zn may be beneficial for breast cancer prevention.

Abstract
Cadmium is a common environmental heavy metal pollutant that can accumulate over long periods of time and cause disease. Thus, analysis of the molecular mechanisms affected by cadmium in the body could be of great significance for the prevention and treatment of cadmium-related diseases. In this study, flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, transmission electron microscopy, H&E (Hematoxylin Eosin) staining and TUNEL (TdT-mediated dUTP Nick-End Labeling) assays were used to verify that cadmium induced apoptosis and immune responses in bovine mammary epithelial cells (BMECs) and in mouse mammary gland. Isolated BMECs cultured with or without cadmium were collected to screen miRNA (microRNA) using high-throughput sequencing. There were 42 differentially-expressed miRNAs among which 27 were upregulated and 15 downregulated including bta-miR-133a, bta-miR-23b-5p, bta-miR-29e, bta-miR-365-5p, bta-miR-615, bta-miR-7, bta-miR-11975, bta-miR-127, and bta-miR-411a. Among those, miR-133a (which can specifically target TGFB2 (Recombinant Transforming Growth Factor Beta 2) was the most significantly downregulated with a fold-change of 5.27 in BMECs cultured with cadmium. Application of the double luciferase reporter system, western blotting, and qRT-PCR (Quantitative Real-time PCR) revealed that circ08409 can directly bind to miR-133a. Experiments demonstrated that circRNA-08409 could adsorb bta-miR-133a. Both circ08409 and TGFB2 significantly increased apoptosis and altered expression level of a series of inflammatory factors in BMECs. In contrast, miR-133a decreased significantly apoptosis and inflammation in the cells. Compared with cultures receiving only cadmium, the miR-133a+cadmium cultures exhibited significant reductions in the occurrence of late apoptosis. Overall, results indicated that circ08409 could relieve the inhibitory effect of miR-133a on TGFB2 expression by combining with miR-133a and subsequently modulating cell proliferation, apoptosis and inflammation. Overall, the data suggested that the circ08409/miR-133a/TGFB2 axis might play a role in mediating the effect of cadmium on BMECs. As such, data provide novel insights into controlling hazards that cadmium could induce in the mammary gland.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Breast cancer is the most commonly occurring neoplasm in females, comprising 16% of all female cancers worldwide. Various studies indicate some discrepancies regarding zinc (Zn) levels in various samples of breast cancer patients. OBJECTIVE The present study evaluated by meta-analysed the published data for Zn levels analyzed in breast tissue, plasma, serum, and hair samples and its relationship with breast cancer. METHODS The present meta-analysis included 36 studies, all of which were published in the years between 1984 to 2017 and selected by searching the databases MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, PubMed, Scopus, and the ISI Web of Knowledge. The articles were analyzed, and I² statistics were used to examine heterogeneity. The objective analysis was performed on data from the 36 studies, with total 1699 study subjects and 2009 controls. RESULTS Significant statistical differences overall were observed, based on a random effects model (SMD (95 % CI), -0.78[-1.40, -0.16], P = 0.014). Data from 19 of these studies indicated significant statistical differences between cancerous patients and controls with regard to serum and plasma Zn concentration (SMD [(95 %CI): -1.61(-2.43, -0.79)]. There was a significant statistical difference between the breast tissue and hair as regards Zn status (SMD (95%CI): 2.32(1.42, 3.21)) and (SMD (95v%CI): -1.80(-3.41, -0.20), respectively. Zn concentration levels typically decreased in blood and hair samples of patients with breast cancer, whereas it was elevated in tumor tissues. CONCLUSIONS There is a significant relationship between lowered serum Zn concentrations and risk of breast cancer onset or recurrences in women, but because of high heterogeneity, we recommend other primary studies.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine Cd (cadmium) and As (arsenic) contents in human breast cancer tissues, investigate their interactions with Se (selenium) and Fe (iron), and assess their further implications for tumor progression. Metal contents were determined in 42 tissue sets (tumor and adjacent tissue) collected from 42 women diagnosed with primary breast cancer. Analytical methods included AAS and ICP-MS techniques. Significantly higher contents of Cd (p=0.0003), Se (p<0.0001) and Fe (p=0.0441) whereas significantly lower content of As (p<0.0001) were observed in tumors as compared to adjacent tissues. There was a significant positive correlation between Cd and As contents in tumor tissue. However, only Cd was significantly associated with histological type of tumor, its size, grading and progesterone receptor status. This study support the role of Cd in breast cancer risk and progression. The possible link between As exposure and breast cancer is still not clear.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) is a carcinogenic heavy metal which is implicated in breast cancer development. While the mechanisms of Cd-induced breast cancer initiation and promotion have been studied, the molecular processes involved in breast cancer progression remain to be investigated. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the influence of Cd on metastasis-associated phenotypes, such as cell adhesion, migration, and invasion in triple-negative breast cancer cells. Treatment of MDA-MB-231 cells with 1μM Cd increased cell spreading and cell migration. This was associated with the activation of integrin β1, FAK, Src, and Rac1. Treatment with Cd also inhibited GSK3β activity and induced T-cell factor/lymphoid enhancer factor (TCF/LEF) transcription, indicating the involvement of β-catenin signaling. Furthermore, treatment with 3μM Cd for 4weeks increased the expression of β-catenin and enhanced TCF/LEF-mediated transcription. Furthermore, enhanced expressions of integrins α5 and β1, paxillin, and vimentin indicated that prolonged Cd treatment reorganized the cytoskeleton, which aided malignancy, as evidenced by enhanced matrix metalloprotease 2/9 (MMP2/9) secretion and cell invasion. Prolonged Cd treatment also caused an increase in cell growth. Together, these results indicate that Cd alters key signaling processes involved in the regulation of cytoskeleton to enhance cancer cell migration, invasion, adhesion, and proliferation.

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the toxicity of cadmium and to evaluate the effectiveness of maifanite in preventing cadmium-induced adverse effects. Thirty-two crossbred pigs (Duroc × Landrace × Large white, sex balanced, 17.25 ± 0.07 kg average body weight) were randomly allotted to one of four dietary treatments in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement, with eight replicates per treatment and one pig per replicate. The dietary treatments included two cadmium (as CdCl2) doses (0.32 and 30.49 mg/kg) and two maifanite doses (0 and 1%). The results showed that pigs treated with cadmium decreased their average daily feed intake (P < 0.05) and increased (P < 0.05) the feed/gain ratio. Cadmium was found in the tissues of pigs that were fed with cadmium-contaminated diets, but the level of cadmium was much lower when maifanite was added to the cadmium-contaminated diets. Ingestion of diets that were artificially contaminated with cadmium (30.49 mg/kg of cadmium) reduced (P < 0.05) the number of lymphocytes, the total erythrocyte count, the hemoglobin level, and the hematocrit. However, the activities of serum aspartate aminotransferase and gamma glutamyltransferase were increased (P < 0.05). The total protein level was lower (P < 0.05) in pigs fed with cadmium-contaminated diets. The contents of malondialdehyde increased (P < 0.05), while the total antioxidant capacity and the activities of total superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase, and catalase decreased (P < 0.05) in pigs fed with cadmium-contaminated diets. Dietary addition of maifanite can, to some extent, prevent the negative effects associated with feeding cadmium diets (30.49 mg/kg of cadmium) to pigs.

Abstract
The increased rate of breast cancer incidences especially among postmenopausal women has been reported in recent decades. Despite the fact that women who inherited mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes have a high risk of developing breast cancer, studies have also shown that significant exposure to certain metal compounds and organic solvents also increases the risks of mammary gland carcinogenesis. While physiological properties govern the uptake, intracellular distribution, and binding of metal compounds, their interaction with proteins seems to be the most relevant process for metal carcinogenicity than biding to DNA. The four most predominant mechanisms for metal carcinogenicity include (1) interference with cellular redox regulation and induction of oxidative stress, (2) inhibition of major DNA repair, (3) deregulation of cell proliferation, and (4) epigenetic inactivation of genes by DNA hypermethylation. On the other hand, most organic solvents are highly lipophilic and are biotransformed mainly in the liver and the kidney through a series of oxidative and reductive reactions, some of which result in bioactivation. The breast physiology, notably the parenchyma, is embedded in a fat depot capable of storing lipophilic xenobiotics. This paper reviews the role of metal compounds and organic solvents in breast cancer development.

Abstract
Selenium salts as well as elemental selenium nanoparticles are attracting the attention of researchers due to their excellent biological properties. The aim of the present work was to study immunomodulation by applying elemental Se NPs to stimulate the immune response of mice bearing 4 T1 breast cancer tumors. Six- to 8-week-old female inbred BALB/c mice were divided into two groups of test and control, each containing 15 mice. Every day, for 2 weeks prior to tumor induction, selenium nanoparticles were orally administered to the mice at a dose of 100 μg/day. Then, 1 × 10(6) cells from a 4 T1 cell line were injected subcutaneously to each mouse. Oral nanoparticle administration was continued daily for 3 weeks after tumor induction. Different immunological parameters were then evaluated including cytokine level, delayed type hypersensitivity (DTH) response as well as tumor growth and the survival rates in all treated or nontreated animals. The production of Th1 cytokines, such as IFN-γ and IL-12, in spleen cell culture was increased in the test mice-administered selenium nanoparticles. The DTH response of test mice also showed a significant increase when compared to the control mice. The survival rate was notably higher for the selenium nanoparticle-treated mice compared to the control mice. Our results suggest that selenium nanoparticle administration can result in considerable induction of the Th1 platform of immune response through the elevation of IFN-γ and IL-12 and may be a cause for better prognosis in mice with tumors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oxidative stress is believed to play a crucial role in aging and age-related diseases, and is widely thought to increase morbidity and mortality in the elderly. Assessment of biomarkers of oxidative stress, such as 8-isoprostane and 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine, are considered to be useful in predicting disease risks at the population level. OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study was to assess the health status of the elderly by comparing their lifestyles and levels of oxidative stress biomarkers. METHODS We carried out a cross-sectional study where urine samples from a total of 100 elderly men and women were assayed for 8-isoprostane, 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine, selenium, cadmium and creatinine. They were asked to answer a questionnaire that included questions about their lifestyle. RESULTS Most of the participants were prehypertensive, non-alcohol users and on a rich plant-based diet. There were no differences in any biomarkers of oxidative stress between men and women. 8-Isoprostane was found to correlate positively with systolic blood pressure in women, but not in men. There was a slight increase of 8-isoprostane in participants with a poor intake of vegetables, and a decrease of 8-hydroxy-2-deoxyguanosine in participants who consumed fish. Multiple regression analysis showed that oxidative stress biomarkers were positively associated with cadmium, and negatively associated with selenium and fish intake in all participants, 89% of which were non-smokers. CONCLUSION Results from the present study show that fish intake has the potential of decreasing oxidative stress among elderly persons.

Abstract
Prostate cancer is the most common non-cutaneous malignancy and second leading cause of cancer mortality in men. The principle goal of this study was explore the feasibility of applying boosting coupled with trace element analysis of hair, for accurately distinguishing prostate cancer from healthy person. A total of 113 subjects containing 55 healthy men and 58 prostate cancers were collected. Based on a special index of variable importance and a forward selection scheme, only nine elements (i.e., Zn, Cr, Mg, Ca, Al, P, Cd, Fe, and Mo) were picked out from 20 candidate elements for modeling the relationship. As a result, an ensemble classifier consisting of only eight decision stumps achieved an overall accuracy of 98.2%, a sensitivity of 100%, and a specificity of 96.4% on the independent test set while all subjects on the training set are classified correctly. It seems that integrating boosting and element analysis of hair can serve as a valuable tool of diagnosing prostate cancer in practice.

Abstract
Since there are no data about the protective role of selenium (Se) against cadmium (Cd)-induced oxidative damage in early life, we studied the effect of Se supplementation on antioxidative enzyme activity and lipid peroxidation (through thiobarbituric acid reactive substances; TBARS) in suckling Wistar rats exposed to Cd. Treated animals received either Se alone for 9 days (8 μmol, i.e., 0.6 mg Se as Na(2)SeO(3) kg(-1) b.w., daily, orally; Se group), Cd alone for 5 days (8 μmol, i.e., 0.9 mg Cd as CdCl(2) kg(-1) b.w., daily, orally; Cd group), or pre-treatment with Se for 4 days and then co-treatment with Cd for the following 5 days (Se + Cd group). Our results showed that selenium supplementation, with and without Cd, increased SOD activity in the brain and kidney, but not in the liver and GSH-Px activity across all tissues compared to control rats receiving distilled water. Relative to the Cd group, Se + Cd group had higher kidney and brain SOD and GSH-Px activity (but not the liver), while in the liver caused increased and in the brain decreased TBARS level. These results suggest that Se stimulates antioxidative enzymes in immature kidney and brain of Cd-exposed rats and could protect against oxidative damage.

Abstract
Metals and metal compounds are part of our environment. Several metals are essential for physiological functions (e.g., zinc or magnesium); while the beneficial effects of others are uncertain (e.g., manganese), some metals are proven to be toxic (e.g., mercury, lead). Additionally there are organic metal compounds; some of them are extremely toxic (e.g., trimethyltin, methylmercury), but there is very little knowledge available how they are handled by organisms. Scientific evidence indicates that long-term exposure to (some) metallic compounds induces different forms of cancer, including breast cancer. On the other side, several metal compounds have clinical use in treating life-threatening diseases such as cancer. In this paper we discuss the recent literature that shows a correlation between metal exposure and breast cancer.

Abstract
This study aims at investigating the blood level of Cu, Zn, Se, and Cd in breast cancer patients and the association between such level and the frequency of micronucleated lymphocytes. Fifty stage I breast cancer patients were recruited for this study at the time of diagnosis and before receiving any treatment or surgery. The control group consisted of 150 normal females matched to the patients for age (± 5 years). The whole blood level of Cu, Zn, Se, and Cd was determined using spectrophotometry. The frequency of micronucleated lymphocytes in the blood was determined using the cytokinesis-block micronucleus assay. The level of Cu, Zn, and Se was significantly lower (p = 0.0006, <0.0001, and <0.0001, respectively) in breast cancer patients, as compared to controls. The level of Cd was significantly (p < 0.0001) higher in the patients, as compared to controls. The frequency of lymphocytes with one micronucleus was significantly (p < 0.0001) higher in the patients, as compared to controls. In breast cancer patients, the frequency of micronucleated lymphocytes showed different associations with different levels of these trace elements. High Cd, low Zn, low Se, and both high and low Cu levels were significantly associated with micronucleus formation in lymphocytes. A similar association was found in the normal control group only in relation to high Se and Cd levels. Breast cancer patients seem to have abnormal levels of Cu, Zn, Se, and Cd, and such abnormality is associated with micronucleus formation in lymphocytes.

Abstract
Although the metabolic and toxicological interactions between essential element selenium (Se) and toxic element cadmium (Cd) have been reported for a long time, the experimental studies explored mostly acute, high-dose interactions. Limited data are available regarding the effects of Se-deficiency on toxicokinetics of cadmium, as well as on the levels of key trace elements--copper, zinc, and iron. In the present study, male and female Wistar weanling rats (n = 40/41) were fed either Se-deficient or Se-adequate diet (<0.06 or 0.14 mg Se per kilogram diet, respectively) for 12 weeks, and from week 9 were drinking water containing 0 or 50 mg Cd/l as cadmium chloride. At the end of the 12-week period, trace element concentrations were estimated by AAS. Selenium-deficient rats of both genders showed significantly lower accumulation of cadmium in the liver, compared to Se-adequate rats. Zinc and iron hepatic levels were not affected by Se-deficiency. However, a significant elevation of copper was found in the liver of Se-deficient rats of both genders. Cadmium supplementation increased zinc and decreased iron hepatic level, regardless of Se status and decreased copper concentration in Se-adequate rats. Se-deficiency was also found to influence the effectiveness of cadmium mobilization in male rats.

Abstract
Breast cancer incidence in Nigerian women has significantly increased during the past three decades in parallel with the rapid industrialization of that country. This suggested that the associated widespread contamination of the soil and of the water supplies by lead (Pb) and other industrial metals was a major contributing cause. Because of its many domestic, industrial, and automotive uses, Pb is of particular concern as it has been shown to promote the development of mammary tumors in murine mammary tumor virus-infected female C3H mice at levels as low of 0.5 ppm Pb in the drinking water. Lead belongs to the group of selenium-antagonistic elements that interact with selenium (Se), abolishing its anti-carcinogenic effect. Lead on chronic, low-level exposure in addition also accelerates tumor growth rates. Higher levels of Pb were found in blood and head hair samples of newly diagnosed patients with breast cancer, all with infiltrating ductal carcinoma, the most common form of breast cancer in Nigeria, seen at Obafemi Awolowo University, than in cancer-free controls from the same area. Evidence for interactions between Pb and Se was obtained from blood, hair, and tumor biopsy tissue analyses. Furthermore, the Pb levels in hair samples of the patients were directly correlated with the volumes of their tumors, in accord with the tumor growth-promoting effects of Pb. Conversely, Se levels in hair and blood were inversely correlated with the tumor volumes, consistent with the anti-proliferative effects of Se. Several other elements, e.g., Cd, Hg, Cr, Sn, and As, were detected in the scalp hair of the patients and the controls, although at significantly lower levels than those of Pb. However, correlation calculations revealed them also to interact with Se, suggesting that only a fraction of the Se in organs and tissues is actually present in bioactive forms. In metal-exposed subjects, a state of latent Se deficiency may exist, resulting in depressed immune functions and increased cancer susceptibility. Evidence is presented to show that Pb and other metals also interact with iodine, another vitally important essential trace element believed to protect against breast cancer development. Public health programs aiming at lowering the breast cancer risk of Nigerian women thus will have to include effective measures to protect the population from exposures to Pb and other industrial metals that are presently contaminating the environment and the water supplies.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) from cigarette smoke, environmental, and nutritional sources accumulates in the human prostate where it interacts with selenium (Se) in a manner suggesting the formation of a 1:1 Cd-Se-protein complex. At low Cd exposures and adequate Se status, this interaction may be beneficial as it results in the detoxification of Cd. At higher exposures, Cd may weaken or abolish the anticarcinogenic effects of Se and increase prostate cancer risk. In some older men and especially in smokers, Cd levels in prostates reach levels in stoichiometric excess over Se, which may be the reason why heavy smokers are at higher risk of developing lethal forms of prostate cancer. In the liver and the kidneys, Cd accumulates as well, but in these organs, Cd is efficiently sequestered through metallothionein formation. In the prostate, this mode of detoxification is not available or less efficient, causing Cd to interact with Se and to increase prostate cancer risk.

Abstract
Trace elements including Al, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Sb, Sr, and Zn were analyzed in the scalp hair samples of women with malignant breast lesions, women with benign breast lesions, and healthy donors using atomic absorption spectrophotometric method. In the scalp hair of malignant-tumor patients, the highest average concentration was shown by Ca (1,187 microg/g), followed by Na (655 microg/g), Mg (478 microg/g), Zn (391 microg/g), Sr (152 microg/g), Fe (114 microg/g), and K (89.8), while in the case of benign-tumor patients, the average estimated element levels were 1,522, 1,093, 572, 457, 217, 80.4, and 74.7 microg/g, respectively. Most of the elements exhibited non-normal distribution evidenced by large spread, standard error, and skewness values. Mean concentrations of Ca (634 microg/g), Zn (206 microg/g), Mg (162 microg/g), Fe (129 microg/g), and Na (82.1 microg/g) were noteworthy in the scalp hair of healthy women. Average levels of Na, Sr, K, Cd, Co, Pb, Mg, Ca, Zn, Ni, Sb, and Mn were revealed to be significantly higher in the hair of malignant and benign patients compared to the healthy women; however, Fe, Cu, Al, and Cr were not significantly different in the scalp hair of the three groups. The quartile distributions of Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Pb, Sb, and Sr revealed maximum spread in the scalp hair of malignant and benign groups; nevertheless, Al, Cu, Fe, and Zn exhibited almost comparable quartile levels in the three groups. Strong correlation coefficients were found between Fe and Cd, Al and Na, Mn and Sr, Co and Cr, Cd and Cr, Pb and K, Pb and Mn, Cu and Na, and Al and Fe in the scalp hair of malignant-tumor patients, while Fe and K, Cd and Co, Na and Co, and Cr and Pb showed strong correlations in the scalp hair of benign-tumor patients, both of which were significantly different compared with the healthy subjects. Multivariate cluster analysis also revealed divergent clustering of the elements in the scalp hair of malignant and benign patients in comparison with the healthy women.

Abstract
This study was undertaken to evaluate selenium (Se) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX) status in patients with newly diagnosed acute myeloid leukemia (AML) before and after induction therapy. Twenty-five patients with newly diagnosed AML and 15 healthy age- and sex-matched control subjects were included in this study. Serum Se level by the graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometric technique and GPX activity by an adaptation of Beutler method was performed for the patients before and after receiving the induction therapy. Serum Se level was significantly lower in patients with AML versus control subjects (63.1 ± 8.8 versus 77 ± 8.8 μg/L before therapy with a P value <0.01 and 69 ± 6.8 versus 77 ± 8.8 μg/L after therapy with a P value <0.01).GPX activity was significantly lower in patients with AML versus control subjects (1.6 ± 0.4 versus 3.4 ± 0.7 μ/g protein pretreatment with a P value <0.01 and 1.9 ± 0.6 versus 3.4 ± 0.7 μ/g protein post induction treatment with P value <0.01).Se level and GPX activity significantly increased in AML patients after treatment. Patients who accomplished complete remission after induction harbored significantly higher Se levels than resistant patients before and after treatment. There was no significant correlation between serum Se level and GPX activity. Decreased Se level and reduced GPX activity in AML patients support the association of carcinogenesis and subnormal Se states.

Abstract
The development of cancer is a complex, multistage process during which a normal cell undergoes genetic changes that result in phenotypic alterations and in the acquisition of the ability to invade other sites. Inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy was used to estimate the contents of Al, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, P, Pb, and Zn in healthy kidney and renal cell carcinoma (RCC), and significant differences were found for all elements. Along with the progression of the malignant disease, a progressive decrease of Cd and K was observed. In fact, for Cd, the concentration in stage T4 was 263.9 times lower than in stage T1, and for K, the concentration in stage T4 was 1.73 times lower than in stage T1. Progressive accumulation was detected for P, Pb, and Zn in stage T4. For P, the concentration in stage T4 was 11.1 times higher than in stage T1; for Pb, the concentration in stage T4 was 232.7 times higher than in T1; and for Zn, the concentration in T4 was 8.452 times higher than in T1. This study highlights the marked differences in the concentrations of selected trace metals in different malignant tumor stages. These findings indicate that some trace metals may play important roles in the pathogenesis of RCC.

Abstract
Little is known about hair minerals in cancer patients, and serum iron level has been shown to be elevated in breast cancer patients. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate hair iron and hair minerals' level related to hair iron in breast cancer patients compared to controls. We compared hair mineral analysis data of 40 breast cancer subjects with age and body mass index-matched normal control data (n = 144) by cross-sectional analysis. All breast cancer patients were newly diagnosed at one Breast Cancer Center in Ajou University and had their hair cut before anti-cancer chemotherapy, and the normal controls (without breast cancer) also had their hair cut for various reasons in out-patient clinics of the Department of Family Practice and Community Health. Breast cancer patients had low calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, manganese, and zinc, whereas they had high arsenic, sodium, and potassium compared with the normal control. The hair iron level was positively correlated with hair calcium (r = 0.761, P < 0.001), magnesium (r = 0.643, P < 0.001), and manganese (r = 0.550, P < 0.001) and negatively correlated with arsenic (r = -0.537, P < 0.001). The hair iron level was significantly associated with the hair calcium (beta = 0.778, P < 0.001) and manganese (beta = 0.240, P < 0.001) by using multiple linear regression analysis. We observed different hair mineral patterns in breast cancer patients compared to normal controls. Especially, hair iron level was significantly reduced and associated with hair calcium and manganese levels.

Abstract
Selenium (Se) has been demonstrated in previous studies to inhibit mammary tumorigenesis in C3H mice infected with the murine mammary tumorvirus, MMTV. The antitumorigenic effects of Se in this animal model of breast cancer were subsequently shown to be counteracted by Se-antagonistic elements. Lead (Pb), for example, was found to abolish the anticarcinogenic effects of Se at 5 ppm in the drinking water. The present study was undertaken to explore the effects of Pb at just 0.5 ppm in the water, i.e., at a level comparable to the concentrations of Pb that have been measured in the tap water of older homes in some communities. Groups of 30 female virgin C3H/St mice infected with MMTV maintained on Torula yeast-based diets containing either 0.15 or 0.65 ppm of yeast-based organic Se and received either deionized water or water containing 0.5 ppm Pb as the acetate over their entire postweaning lifespan. In the control group on deionized water and the 0.15 ppm Se feed, the tumor incidence was 78.6%, which is normal for this strain. Increasing the Se content of the feed to 0.65 ppm lowered the tumor incidence to 30%, demonstrating the antitumorigenic effect of Se. In the experimental groups, the Pb-exposed mice on the 0.15 ppm Se feed developed signs of chronic Pb toxicity as evidenced by diminished weight gain that persisted up to the age of 10 months, during which period the animals remained tumor-free. Thereafter, weight gains ensued to near the values of the controls, and the tumors began to develop in rapid succession until the final tumor incidence of 73.7% was reached. In the group of mice on the 0.65 ppm Se feed, the toxic effects of Pb were diminished, as evidenced by the normal weight gains during the first 10 months but with concomitant physiological inactivation of Se, causing 82.6% of the mice to develop tumors, with the first tumor to appear at the age of 5 months, 7 months earlier than in the Pb-unexposed controls. In addition, tumor growth rates in this group were greatly accelerated and the survival of the tumor-bearing animals was significantly shortened. Direct evidence for the interactions of Pb with Se were obtained by determinations of the two elements in the livers, kidneys, and hair of tumor-free and tumor-bearing mice. However, the exposure of the mice to Pb in the water also altered the levels of Zn, Cu, Fe, and Cr in the organs and tissues, more so in tumor-bearing than tumor-free animals. The present study demonstrates the need to consider the interactions of Se with other trace elements in discussions of its mechanism of anticarcinogenic action.
