Abstract
BACKGROUND The short-term adverse effects of ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) on anxiety disorders (ADs) remained inconclusive. METHODS We applied an individual-level time-stratified case-crossover study, which including 126,112 outpatient visits for ADs during 2019-2021 in Guangdong province, China, to investigate the association of short-term exposure to PM2.5 and O3 with outpatient visits for ADs, and estimate excess outpatient visits in South China. Daily residential air pollutant exposure assessments were performed by extracting grid data (spatial resolution: 1 km × 1 km) from validated datasets. We employed the conditional logistic regression model to quantify the associations and excess outpatient visits. RESULTS The results of the single-pollutant models showed that each 10 μg/m3 increase of PM2.5 and O3 exposures was significantly associated with a 3.14 % (95 % confidence interval: 2.47 %, 3.81 %) and 0.88 % (0.49 %, 1.26 %) increase in odds of outpatient visits for ADs, respectively. These associations remained robust in 2-pollutant models. The proportion of outpatient visits attributable to PM2.5 and O3 exposures was up to 7.20 % and 8.93 %, respectively. Older adults appeared to be more susceptible to PM2.5 exposure, especially in cool season, and subjects with recurrent outpatient visits were more susceptible to O3 exposure. LIMITATION As our study subjects were from one single hospital in China, it should be cautious when generalizing our findings to other regions. CONCLUSION Short-term exposure to ambient PM2.5 and O3 was significantly associated with a higher odds of outpatient visits for ADs, which can contribute to considerable excess outpatient visits.

Abstract
Repeated exposure to tobacco smoke causes neuroinflammation and neuroplasticity, which correlates with smoking withdrawal-induced anxiety. The purpose of this study was to investigate the anticipated involvement of antioxidant-rich nanoparticles (NPs) prepared by oxidation-triggered polymerization of green tea catechins in impacting these effects in a rat model of tobacco smoke exposure. Exposure to tobacco smoke was carried out for 2 h a day, 5 days a week, for a total of 36 days. Weekly behavioral tests were conducted prior to recommencing the exposure. Following a 20-day exposure period, rats were administered either distilled water or green tea (GT) NPs (20 mg/kg, orally) for an additional 16 days. Our findings revealed that tobacco smoke exposure induced anxiety-like behavior indicative of withdrawal, and this effect was alleviated by GT NPs. Tobacco smoke exposure caused a marked increase in the relative mRNA and protein expression of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) and reduced the relative mRNA and protein expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in the hippocampus (HIP) and hypothalamus (HYP) brain subregions. The intervention of GT NPs effectively inhibited these effects. Our findings demonstrate the potent protective role of GT NPs in reducing withdrawal-induced anxiety-like behavior, neuroinflammation, and neuroplasticity triggered by tobacco smoke exposure.

Abstract
Ashwagandha or Withania somnifera is an herbal plant belonging to the Solanaceae family. Because of its wide range of phytochemicals, ashwagandha root extract has been used in numerous research studies, either alone or in conjunction with other natural plants, for various biomedical applications, which include its anti-microbial, anti-inflammatory, anti-stress, anti-tumor, cardioprotective, and neuroprotective properties. Additionally, it improves endothelial function, lowers reactive oxygen species, controls apoptosis, and improves mitochondrial function. These properties make it a useful treatment for a variety of conditions, including age-related symptoms, anxiety, neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes, stress, arthritis, fatigue, and cognitive/memory impairment. Despite the numerous benefits of ashwagandha supplementation, there have been just four meta-analyses on the herb's effectiveness in treating anxiety, neurobehavioral disorders, impotence, and infertility. Moreover, no reviews exist that examine how ashwagandha affects antioxidant response and physical sports performance. Consequently, the goal of this study was to analyze the scientific literature regarding the effects of ashwagandha consumption on antioxidant response and athletic performance.

Abstract
Chronic stress (CS) is critically involved in the Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathogenesis resulting in cognitive disturbance. Also, amyloid precursor protein (APP) related gens, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and stress increases AD-related pathogenesis through increasing APP, all are important players in the development of AD. Herein, we explore the possible neuroprotective and anti-amnestic effect of quercetin (QUER) on cognitive deficits induced by scopolamine (SCOP) in stressed rats. Stress induction was performed by exposed of rats to 2-h chronic restraint stress for 10 days. Then rats were supplemented with QUER (25 mg/kg/day oral gavage, for 1 month). Ratswere submitted to intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of SCOP (1 mg/kg) during the final 9 days of QUER supplementation to induce dementia like condition. Following the interventions, behavioral tests [elevated plus maze (EPM) and novel object recognition memory (NORM)] was examined to analysis the cognitive functions. Meanwhile, prefrontal cortex (PFC) and hippocampus of brain were used for gene expression and biochemical studies. Also, the plasma corticosterone (CORT) level was measured. We established that administration of QUER ameliorated the SCOP-related memory impairment. Also, QUER decreased stress related anxiety like behaviors in the EPM. QUER also altered the interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels in both PFC and hippocampus of SCOP treated rats in stress and non-stress conditions. We found that QUER increased APP and amyloid precursor-like protein 2 (APLP2) mRNA expression in both non-stress and stressed rats. Also, our findings imply that QUER suppress the effect of SCOP on cognitive functions. Moreover, decreased APP mRNA expression in the hippocampus were observed following pretreatment of rats with QUER in both stress and non-stress groups. Given that decreased amyloid beta (Aβ) expression in the hippocampus of stressed rats, it can be proposed that elevations in APP mRNA expression by QUER activates non-amyloidogenic pathways leading to reduction in Aβ levels. However, our findings indicate that QUER can be a therapeutic candidate, which exerts an anti-amnesic property against SCOP-induced memory decline. On the other hand, prior QUER administration in stress condition could be a promising approach against AD prevention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Neuroinflammation is closely related to Alzheimer's Disease (AD) pathology, hence supplements with anti-inflammatory property could help attenuate the progression of AD. This study was conducted to evaluate the potential anti-inflammatory effects of liposome encapsulated thymol (LET), administered orally, in prevention of Alzheimer in a rat model by anti-inflammatory mechanisms. METHODS The rats were grouped into six groups (n = 10 animals per group), including Control healthy (Con), Alzheimer's disease (AD) model, AD model treated with free thymol in 40 and 80 mg/kg body weight (TH40 and TH80), AD model treated with LET in 40 and 80 mg/kg of body weight (LET40 and LET80). The behavioral response of step through latency (Passive Avoidance Test), concentrations of interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) were assessed in serum and hippocampus. RESULTS The results showed that significant increase in concentrations of IL-1β (P = 0.001), IL-6 (P = 0.001), TNF-α (P = 0.001) and COX-2 (P = 0.001) in AD group compared with healthy control rats. AD induction significantly reduced step through latency and revealed deficits in passive avoidance performance. The results also showed the treatment with free thymol especially in higher concentrations and also LTE could decrease serum concentrations of IL-1β (P < 0.05), IL-6 (P < 0.05), TNF-α (P < 0.05), and COX-2 (P < 0.05) and increase BDNF (P < 0.05) compared with control Alzheimer rats in hippocampus and serum. There were also significant correlations between serum and hippocampus concentrations of IL-1β (r2 = 0.369, P = 0.001), IL-6 (r2 = 0.386, P = 0.001), TNF-α (r2 = 0.412, P = 0.001), and COX-2 (r2 = 0.357, P = 0.001). It means a closed and positive relation between serum and hippocampus concentrations of IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and COX-2. CONCLUSIONS LET demonstrates its ability to attenuate neuroinflammatory reaction in AD model through suppression of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α and COX-2 indicators. Hence, it can ameliorate AD pathogenesis by declining inflammatory reaction.

Abstract
Pterocarpus soyauxii (PS) is traditionally used in Cameroon medicine to alleviate postmenopausal symptoms. Previous research has shown that it has tissue-selective potential and estrogen-mimetic effects on vaginal atrophy. Phytoestrogens like 7-O-acetyl formononetin, khrinone A, and 3',5'-dimethoxy-4-stilbenol were found in its water extract by UHPLC, but there is no evidence of its effects on neurological disorders linked to post-menopause (ND-PO). The study aimed to investigate the phytochemical profile of PS aqueous extract, assess its neuroprotective potential in rats, and explore possible underlying pathways. We used colorimetric assays to study the phytochemical profile of PS extract. Effects of the extract on behavioral parameters, neuronal signaling, and integrity in an 84-day ovariectomized rat model. Molecular docking was performed to assess the ability of 7-O-acetyl formononetin, an isoflavone contained in PS, to cross the BBB and its binding affinity to the active sites of AChE, MAO-A, and GABA-T. Besides, the anti-AChE/BChE, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects of PS were assessed by in vitro tests. PS aqueous extract contains polyphenols (656.58 ± 9.18 mgEAG/100gMS), flavonoids (201.25 ± 5.52 mgEQ/100gDW), and tannins (18.42 ± 1.25 mg/100gDW). It slows down anxiety, depressive disorders, cellular disorganization, and neuronal death in the hippocampus, dentate gyrus, and neocortex. In silico modeling was a powerful tool to assess the 7-O-acetylformononetin's ability to cross the BBB and strongly bind and inhibit AChE, MAO-A, and GABA-T. Thus, by combining GABAergic, cholinergic, and serotoninergic modulation, PS aqueous extract also possesses remarkable anti-AChE/BChE in vitro and induces antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential in macrophages. Such estromimetics, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cholinergic, and monoaminergic modulators represent promising activities to develop neuroprotective drugs with optimal therapeutic profiles for menopausal women.

Abstract
Sorghum is a promising treatment for Alzheimer's disease (AD), due to its rich antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities. Fermentation may also affect nutritional values. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to discover the phenolic and flavonoid chemicals found in both fermented and non-fermented red sorghum, as well as their potential therapeutic uses for AD. L. fermentum, and L. reuteri, and/or L. plantarum and L. casei were used to ferment samples of sorghum. The rats were grouped into five groups, healthy animals, and rats with Alzheimer's receiving 200 mg/kg of saline, non-fermented sorghum, and fermented sorghum fermented with L. fermentum and L. reuteri, as well as L. plantarum and L. casei. Various assessments were conducted, including evaluations of behavioral responses, antioxidant responses, inflammatory responses, acetylcholine levels and acetylcholine esterase, and bacterial populations in stool. P-hydroxybenzoic acid, eriodictyo naringenin, and apigenin were significantly higher in fermented samples, while glycerols were higher in non-fermented samples. The induction of Alzheimer's led to decrease step-through latency, time in target zone, FRAP, acetylcholine levels, Bifidobacterium population and lactobacillus population, while increased escape latency, platform location latency, MDA levels, IL-6, TNF-α, acetylcholine esterase, and coliform population (P = 0.001). The administration of both non-fermented sorghum and fermented sorghum demonstrated the potential to reverse the effects of AD, with a notably higher efficacy observed in the fermented samples compared to the non-fermented ones. In conclusion, fermentation exerted significant effects on the bioactive compounds the administration of fermented sorghum resulted in improved behavioral responses, characterized by a reduction in oxidation, inflammation and microbial population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate the benefit of inpatient treatment in reducing disease activity in patients with complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) who have exhausted outpatient options. Furthermore, the study sought to identify patient-related outcome variables that predict a reduction in disease activity. METHODS The primary outcome was disease severity (CRPS Severity Score, range 0-16 points). Secondary outcomes included depression, anxiety, physical function, pain interference, fatigue, sleep disturbance, and the ability to participate in social roles and activities, all of which were assessed using the PROMIS-29. Furthermore, pain catastrophizing, neuropathic pain, quality of life, pain self-efficacy, medication intake, and the patient's global impression of change were examined in accordance with current international agreed recommendations, assessed at discharge, 3-month, and 6-month post-discharge. Mixed-effects models were conducted to identify baseline variables associated with CRPS severity. RESULTS Twenty-five patients completed the program (mean age 49.28 [SD 11.23] years, 92% females, mean symptom duration 8.5 [SD 6.5] months). Results showed a significant reduction between baseline and discharge of disease activity (CSS -2.36, P < .0001), pain (PROMIS-29 pain -0.88, P = .005), and emotional function (PROMIS-29 depression -5.05, P < .001; fatigue -4.63, P = .002). Moderate evidence for a reduction between baseline and discharge could be observed for pain interference (+2.27, P = .05), social participation (PROMIS-29 + 1.93, P = .05), anxiety (PROMIS-29 -3.32, P = .02) and physical function (PROMIS-29 + 1.3, P = .03). On discharge, 92% of patients (23 of 25) reported improvement in their overall condition. In the follow-up period, medication intake could be reduced after 3 (MQS -8.22, P = .002) and 6 months (MQS -8.69, P = .001), and there was further improvement in social participation after 3 months (PROMIS-29 + 1.72, 0.03) and sleep after 6 months (PROMIS-29 + 2.38, 0.008). In the mixed models, it was demonstrated that patients experiencing less pain at baseline also exhibited lower disease activity. CONCLUSION The results of this study confirm that inpatient interdisciplinary treatment of CRPS patients improves disease activity, pain, physical function, emotional function, and social participation. Most improvements were maintained for up to 6 months after discharge. The majority of patients reported that their overall condition had improved during the study period.

Abstract
Mood disorders and substance use disorder (SUD) are of immense medical and social concern. Although significant progress on neuronal involvement in mood and reward circuitries has been achieved, it is only relatively recently that the role of glia in these disorders has attracted attention. Detailed understanding of the glial functions in these devastating diseases could offer novel interventions. Here, following a brief review of circuitries involved in mood regulation and reward perception, the specific contributions of neurotrophic factors, neuroinflammation, and gut microbiota to these diseases are highlighted. In this context, the role of specific glial cells (e.g., microglia, astroglia, oligodendrocytes, and synantocytes) on phenotypic manifestation of mood disorders or SUD are emphasized. In addition, use of this knowledge in the potential development of novel therapeutics is touched upon.

Abstract
Gut microorganisms have been shown to significantly impact on central function and studies that have associated brain disorders with specific bacterial genera have advocated an anomalous gut microbiome as the pathophysiological basis of several psychiatric and neurological conditions. Thus, our knowledge of brain-to-gut-to microbiome communication in this bidirectional axis seems to have been overlooked. This review examines the known mechanisms of the microbiome-to-gut-to-brain axis, highlighting how brain-to-gut-to-microbiome signaling may be key to understanding the cause of disrupted gut microbial communities. We show that brain disorders can alter the function of the brain-to-gut-to-microbiome axis, which will in turn contribute to disease progression, while the microbiome-to gut-to brain direction presents as a more versatile therapeutic axis, since current psychotropic/neurosurgical interventions may have unwanted side effects that further cause disruption to the gut microbiome. A consideration of the brain-to-gut-to-microbiome axis is imperative to better understand how the microbiome-gut-brain axis overall is involved in brain illnesses, and how it may be utilized as a preventive and therapeutic tool.

Abstract
Information on long-term effects of postovulatory oocyte aging (POA) on offspring is limited. Whether POA affects offspring by causing oxidative stress (OS) and mitochondrial damage is unknown. Here, in vivo-aged (IVA) mouse oocytes were collected 9 h after ovulation, while in vitro-aged (ITA) oocytes were obtained by culturing freshly ovulated oocytes for 9 h in media with low, moderate, or high antioxidant potential. Oocytes were fertilized in vitro and blastocysts transferred to produce F1 offspring. F1 mice were mated with naturally bred mice to generate F2 offspring. Both IVA and the ITA groups in low antioxidant medium showed significantly increased anxiety-like behavior and impaired spatial and fear learning/memory and hippocampal expression of anxiolytic and learning/memory-beneficial genes in both male and female F1 offspring. Furthermore, the aging in both groups increased OS and impaired mitochondrial function in oocytes, blastocysts, and hippocampus of F1 offspring; however, it did not affect the behavior of F2 offspring. It is concluded that POA caused OS and damaged mitochondria in aged oocytes, leading to defects in anxiety-like behavior and learning/memory of F1 offspring. Thus, POA is a crucial factor that causes psychological problems in offspring, and antioxidant measures may be taken to ameliorate the detrimental effects of POA on offspring.

Abstract
Although previous studies have explored the associations of white matter hyperintensity with psychiatric disorders, the sample size is small and the conclusions are inconsistent. The present study aimed to further systematically explore the association in a larger sample. All data were extracted from the UK Biobank. First, general linear regression models and logistic regression models were used to assess the association between white matter hyperintensity volume and anxiety/depression. White matter hyperintensity has been classified into periventricular white matter hyperintensity and deep white matter hyperintensity. Anxiety was determined by General Anxiety Disorder-7 score (n = 17,221) and self-reported anxiety (n = 15,333), depression was determined by Patient Health Questionnaire-9 score (n = 17,175), and self-reported depression (n = 14,519). Moreover, we employed Cox proportional hazard models to explore the association between white matter hyperintensity volume and anxiety/depression. The covariates included in fully adjusted model are age, gender, body mass index, Townsend deprivation index, healthy physical activity, cigarette consumption, alcohol consumption, educational attainment, diabetes, hypertension, and coronary heart disease. The results of the fully adjusted model showed that white matter hyperintensity volume was significantly associated with General Anxiety Disorder-7 score (periventricular white matter hyperintensity: β = 0.152, deep white matter hyperintensity: β = 0.094) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 score (periventricular white matter hyperintensity: β = 0.168). Logistic regression analysis results indicated that periventricular white matter hyperintensity volume (odds ratio = 1.153) was significantly associated with self-reported anxiety. After applying the Cox proportional hazard models, we found that larger white matter hyperintensity volume was associated with increased risk of depression (periventricular white matter hyperintensity: hazard ratio = 1.589, deep white matter hyperintensity: hazard ratio = 1.200), but not anxiety. In summary, our findings support a positive association between white matter hyperintensity volume and depression.

Abstract
Na+/K+-ATPase (NKA) plays an important role in the central nervous system. However, little is known about its function in the microglia. Here, we found that NKAα1 forms a complex with the purinergic P2X7 receptor (P2X7R), an adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP)-gated ion channel, under physiological conditions. Chronic stress or treatment with lipopolysaccharide plus ATP decreased the membrane expression of NKAα1 in microglia, facilitated P2X7R function, and promoted microglia inflammatory activation via activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome. Accordingly, global deletion or conditional deletion of NKAα1 in microglia under chronic stress-induced aggravated anxiety-like behavior and neuronal hyperexcitability. DR5-12D, a monoclonal antibody that stabilizes membrane NKAα1, improved stress-induced anxiety-like behavior and ameliorated neuronal hyperexcitability and neurogenesis deficits in the ventral hippocampus of mice. Our results reveal that NKAα1 limits microglia inflammation and may provide a target for the treatment of stress-related neuroinflammation and diseases.

Abstract
Asthma is a highly heterogeneous inflammatory disease that can have a significant effect on both the respiratory system and central nervous system. Population based studies and animal models have found asthma to be comorbid with a number of neurological conditions, including depression, anxiety, and neurodevelopmental disorders. In addition, maternal asthma during pregnancy has been associated with neurodevelopmental disorders in the offspring, such as autism spectrum disorders and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. In this article, we review the most current epidemiological studies of asthma that identify links to neurological conditions, both as it relates to individuals that suffer from asthma and the impacts asthma during pregnancy may have on offspring neurodevelopment. We also discuss the relevant animal models investigating these links, address the gaps in knowledge, and explore the potential future directions in this field.

Abstract
Neuropsychiatric disorders (NPDs) are considered a potential threat to mental health. Inflammation predominantly plays a role in the pathophysiology of NPDs. Dietary patterns are widely postulated to be involved in the physiological response to inflammation. This review aims to discuss the literature on how dietary inflammatory index (DII) is related to inflammation and, consequently, NPDs. After comprehensive scrutiny in different databases, the articles that investigated the relation of DII score and various NPDs and psychological circumstances were included. The association between dietary patterns and mental disorders comprising depression, anxiety, and stress proved the role of a proinflammatory diet in these conditions' exacerbation. Aging is another condition closely associated with DII. The impact of proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory diet on sleep quality indicated related disorders like sleep latency and day dysfunctions among the different populations are in relation with the high DII score. The potential effects of genetic backgrounds, dietary patterns, and the gut microbiome on DII are discussed as well. To plan preventive or therapeutic interventions considering the DII, these factors, especially genetic variations, should be considered as there is a growing body of literature indicating the role of personalized medicine in different NPDs. To the best of our knowledge, there is a limited number of RCTs on this subject, so future research should evaluate the causality via RCTs and look for therapeutic interventions with an eye on personalized medicine using information about DII in NPDs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To evaluate whether infectious illness symptoms (IIS) are associated with generalized anxiety symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic in sexual/gender (SGM) minority young adults assigned male at birth (AMAB). METHOD Four hundred eighteen participants (median age = 25; range, 20-40) were recruited through RADAR, an ongoing Chicago-based cohort study of SGM-AMAB between September 2020 and February 2021. Participants completed online surveys. A subset (n = 145) provided dried blood spot samples to assess SARS-CoV-2 serostatus. RESULTS One hundred twenty participants (28.7%) had GAD-7 scores of 10 or greater, which indicates generalized anxiety symptoms that may be clinically significant. In a binomial logistic regression model adjusting age, gender identity, race/ethnicity, substance use, and HIV status, the authors found that having a higher IIS count since March 1, 2020, was associated with greater odds of having a GAD-7 score of 10 or greater (OR = 1.14; 95% CI, 1.04, 1.25; P = 0.007). This effect was more pronounced in a binomial logistic regression model adjusting for the same covariates but using current IIS count as the independent variable (OR = 1.39; 95% CI, 1.13, 1.74; P = 0.002). CONCLUSION Among SGM-AMAB young adults, those who experienced ISS reported higher scores on the GAD-7, a widely used and validated screening measure for generalized anxiety symptoms. These findings highlight the importance of screening for anxiety disorders when patients present with IIS in clinical settings and psychobehavioral health follow-ups when indicated.

Abstract
Apigenin is a flavone widely present in different fruits and vegetables and has been suggested to possess neuroprotective effects against some neurological disorders. In this study, we systematically reviewed preclinical studies that investigated the effects of apigenin on learning and memory, locomotion activity, anxiety-like behaviour, depressive-like behaviour and sensorimotor and motor coordination in rats and mice with impaired memory and behaviour. We searched SCOPUS, Web of Science, PubMed and Google Scholar for relevant articles. A total of 34 studies were included in this review. The included studies revealed that apigenin enhanced learning and memory and locomotion activity, exhibited anxiolytic effects, attenuated depressive-like behaviour and improved sensorimotor and motor coordination in animals with cognitive impairment and neurobehavioural deficit. Some of the molecular and biochemical mechanisms of apigenin include activation of the ERK/CREB/BDNF signalling pathway; modulation of neurotransmitter levels and monoaminergic, cholinergic, dopaminergic and serotonergic systems; inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokine production; and attenuation of oxidative neuronal damage. These results revealed the necessity for further research using established doses and short or long durations to ascertain effective and safe doses of apigenin. These results also point to the need for a clinical experiment to ascertain the therapeutic effect of apigenin.

Abstract
Previous research has demonstrated that practicing forest bathing has significant positive effects on adult psychological well-being. Considering the ongoing adolescents' mental health crisis of increasing anxiety and depression, determining whether forest bathing has similar effects on adolescents is an important expansion of forest bathing research. This study investigated the possibility that forest bathing could improve adolescents' mental well-being and sought to determine participants' experiences of forest bathing. It used a convergent, parallel, mixed-methods design that was partially co-created with 24 participants aged 16-18 as part of a youth participatory action research (YPAR) project in which participants practiced forest bathing three times over 3 weeks. As measured using the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Survey, the mean participant mental well-being increased significantly after forest bathing, with moderate to large effect sizes. Participants described reduced stress and increased feelings of relaxation, peace, and happiness. These findings correlate with previous forest bathing research involving adult participants. It is recommended that educators and others who work with adolescents consider forest bathing as a simple, low-cost way to improve adolescents' mental well-being.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the primary health problems linked to the decrease of acetylcholine in cholinergic neurons and elevation in oxidative stress. Myco-fabrication of ZnO-NPs revealed excellent biological activities, including anti-inflammatory and acetylcholinesterase inhibitory potentials. This study aims to determine if two distinct doses of myco-fabricated ZnO-NPs have a positive impact on behavioral impairment and several biochemical markers associated with inflammation and oxidative stress in mice that have been treated by aluminum chloride (AlCl3) to induce AD. Sixty male mice were haphazardly separated into equally six groups. Group 1 was injected i.p. with 0.5 ml of deionized water daily during the experiment. Mice in group 2 received AlCl3 (50 mg/kg/day i.p.). Groups 3 and 4 were treated i.p. with 5 and 10 mg/kg/day of ZnO-NPs only, respectively. Groups 5 and 6 were given i.p. 5 and 10 mg/kg/day ZnO-NPs, respectively, add to 50 mg/kg/day AlCl3. Results showed that the AlCl3 caused an increase in the escape latency time and a reduction in the time spent in the target quadrant, indicating a decreased improvement in learning and memory. Moreover, acetylcholinesterase enzyme (AChE) activity and malondialdehyde (MDA), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin 1β (IL-1β) levels were significantly increased, and the content of glutathione (GSH), activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), as well as levels of serotonin and dopamine, were decreased in brain tissues only in AlCl3 treated mice. However, treatment of mice with myco-fabrication of ZnO-NPs at doses of 5 or 10 mg/kg improves learning and memory function through ameliorate all the previous parameters in the AD mice group. The low dose of 5 mg/kg is more effective than a high dose of 10 mg/kg. In accordance with these findings, myco-fabricated ZnO-NPs could enhance memory and exhibit a protective influence against memory loss caused by AlCl3.

Abstract
Factors contributing to the varied outcomes of complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) are not well known. This study aimed to determine whether baseline psychological factors, pain, and disability influence long-term CRPS outcomes. We conducted an 8-year follow-up from a previous prospective study of CRPS outcomes. Sixty-six people diagnosed with acute CRPS were previously assessed at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months and in the current study, 45 were followed up after 8 years. At each timepoint, we measured signs and symptoms of CRPS, pain, disability, and psychological factors. Mixed-model repeated measures were used to identify baseline predictors of CRPS severity, pain, and disability at 8 years. Predictors of greater CRPS severity at 8 years were female sex, greater baseline disability, and greater baseline pain. Predictors of greater pain at 8 years were greater baseline anxiety and disability. The only predictor of greater disability at 8 years was greater baseline pain. Findings suggest CRPS is best understood from a biopsychosocial perspective, and baseline anxiety, pain, and disability may influence the trajectory of CRPS outcomes as far as 8 years later. These variables could be used to identify those at risk of poor outcomes or form targets for early interventions. PERSPECTIVE: This paper presents the findings of the first study to prospectively investigate predictors of CRPS outcomes over 8 years. Baseline anxiety, pain, and disability predicted greater CRPS severity, pain, and disability over 8 years. These factors could identify those at risk of poor outcomes or form targets for early interventions.

Abstract
Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic and clinically complex disease, characterized by pathological disturbances in mood and energy. Cytokines can access the brain and their signaling pathways affect brain functions, such as neurotransmitter metabolism, neuroendocrine function, neural/synaptic plasticity, and mood neural circuitry. JAK 1 is the most common phosphorylation protein combined with the tyrosine kinase cytokine receptors; therefore, we investigated the association between the Janus family kinase 1 (JAK1) gene polymorphisms (rs2780895, rs4244165, and rs17127024) and susceptibility to BD. The case study population included 93 patients diagnosed with BD and 112 healthy controls, selected from the central coastal region of Tunisia. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism was used to investigate these 3 JAK1 polymorphisms. We compared the sociodemographic and clinical parameters of 3 genotypes of this single nucleotide polymorphisms rs2780895, rs4244165, and rs17127024 of the JAK1 gene. The frequencies of the 3 genotypes were similar in the patient and control groups. One-way analysis of variance revealed a significant variation in rs4244165. After hospitalization, the average of the brief psychiatric rating scale score was significantly higher for the wild-type GG genotype than that for the double-mutation TT genotype (31.23% vs 22.85%, P = .043). The least significant difference post hoc test also showed a significant difference between the GG and TT genotypes at both hospital admission (P = .001) and after hospitalization (P = .012), with the GG genotype being associated with a higher brief psychiatric rating scale score. Haplotypic analysis revealed that the wild-type haplotype with the highest frequency (46.62%) was CTG. Our results showed no association between the 3 studied positions and bipolar disorder. However, the G-allele of rs4244165 in JAK1 is associated with the highest level of the brief psychiatric rating scale in patients with bipolar disorder. The JAK/signal transducer and activator of transcription pathway is an interesting therapeutic route that requires further investigations. Studying their regulatory regions can provide a clearer picture of all the interactions involved in the regulation of genetic expression in response to treatment.

Abstract
The first epidemiological wave of the incidence of COVID-19 in Bulgaria was registered in June 2020. After the wave peak, we conducted a study in persons diagnosed with COVID-19 (N = 52). They were assessed with the anxiety-depressive scale (ADS), including basic (BS), vegetative (VS), conversion (CS), obsessive-phobic (OPS), and depressive (DS) symptoms. ADS assessment of individuals diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 indicated a correlation between OPS and IL-33 values. IL-10 levels were higher than reference ranges in all patients. Multiple linear regression analyses demonstrated that combination of CS and OPS explained 28% of IL-33 levels, while combination of symptoms from all ADS dimensions explained 24% of IL-33 levels. It was also found that 21% of IL-28A levels was explained from the combination by all ADS dimensions, whereas OPS was the predictor for lower concentrations. The obtained results revealed meaningful correlations between psycho neuro-immunological factors in pathogenesis of illness from the coronavirus infection.

Abstract
Chronic stress is a risk factor for depression and is characterized by elevated levels of brain monoamine oxidase A (MAOA). Mounting evidence has shown that MAOA is a biochemical link between stress and depression. Apigenin (API), a natural flavonoid, as demonstrated in vitro inhibitory effect on MAOA, is suggestive of antidepressant-like activity. However, the in vivo inhibitory effect of API on MAOA and how it affects depression still remain unclear. Here, we report the probable mechanisms of action of API in chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS)-induced depression in mice. Treatment with API reversed anhedonia, and reduced anxiety and immobility time in behavioral studies. API reduced brain corticosterone and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels but increased brain levels of glutathione and superoxide dismutase. Furthermore, interleukin-6 and tumor necrosis factor-α were attenuated by API. It also restored cell loss and inhibited the activity of MAOA in the hippocampal brain regions and prefrontal cortex. Comparative binding affinity of API for MAOA (-7.7 kcal/mol) through molecular docking studies was greater than that of reference compound, clorgyline (-6.8 kcal/mol). Favorable hydrophobic interactions important to API binding at MAOA binding cavity was revealed to include conventional hydrogen bond (Cys323 and Tyr444), π-Sulfur (Cys323), π-π Stacked (Tyr407), π-π T-shaped (Phe208), π-lone pair and π-alkyl (Ile335, Ile180) interactions. These results suggest that API is a potent, selective, reversible inhibitor of MAOA with capability of attenuating CUMS-induced depression via inhibiting MAOA enzyme activity and altering other pathomechanisms.

Abstract
Anxiety-related disorders are among the most important risks for global health, especially in recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Benzodiazepines like diazepam are generally used to treat anxiety disorders, but the overall outcome is not always satisfactory. This is why psychiatrists encourage patients with anxiety to change their lifestyle habits to decrease the risk of anxiety recurrence. However, the effect of diazepam and exercise in combination is unknown. This study aimed to investigate the effect of diazepam alone or in combination with swimming exercise on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced anxiety-like behavior and oxidative stress in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex of mice. Mice were exposed to diazepam and swimming exercise alone or in combination with each other and then received LPS. We assessed anxiety-like behavior using open field and light-dark box and measured oxidative markers including glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), and glutathione disulfide (GSSG) in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex. The findings showed that LPS increased anxiety-related symptoms and oxidative stress by decreasing GSH and increasing MDA and GSSG levels in the prefrontal cortex but not in the hippocampus. Although diazepam alone did not reduce anxiety-like behavior and oxidative stress, it in combination with exercise significantly decreased anxiety-like behavior and oxidative stress in the prefrontal cortex of LPS-treated mice. This drug and exercise combination also displayed a more effective effect in comparison with exercise alone. Overall, this study suggests that diazepam in combination with swimming exercise has higher efficacy on anxiety-like behavior and oxidative stress than when they are used alone.

Abstract
Introduction: Cannabidiol (CBD) extract from the cannabis plant has biomedical and nutraceutical potential. Unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), CBD products produce few psychoactive effects and pose little risk for abuse. There is emerging preclinical and clinical evidence that CBD is stress modulatory and may have anti-inflammatory properties. People across the United States legally ingest CBD-rich hemp extracts to manage mental and physical health problems, including stress and inflammation. Preclinical studies have revealed potential mechanisms for these effects; however, the impact of this prior work is diminished because many studies: 1) tested synthetic CBD rather than CBD-rich hemp extracts containing terpenes and/or other cannabinoids thought to enhance therapeutic benefits; 2) administered CBD via injection into the peritoneal cavity or the brain instead of oral ingestion; and 3) failed to examine potential sex differences. To address these gaps in the literature, the following study tested the hypothesis that the voluntary oral ingestion of CBD-rich hemp extract will attenuate the impact of stressor exposure on plasma and tissue inflammatory and stress proteins in females and males. Methods: Adult male and female Sprague Dawley rats (10-15/group) were randomly assigned to be given cereal coated with either vehicle (coconut oil) or CBD-rich hemp extract (L-M0717, CBDrx/Functional Remedies, 20.0 mg/kg). After 7 days, rats were exposed to a well-established acute model of stress (100, 1.5 mA, 5-s, intermittent tail shocks, 90 min total duration) or remained in home cages as non-stressed controls. Results: Stressor exposure induced a robust stress response, i.e., increased plasma corticosterone and blood glucose, and decreased spleen weight (a surrogate measure of sympathetic nervous system activation). Overall, stress-induced increases in inflammatory and stress proteins were lower in females than males, and oral CBD-rich hemp extract constrained these responses in adipose tissue (AT) and mesenteric lymph nodes (MLN). Consistent with previous reports, females had higher levels of stress-evoked corticosterone compared to males, which may have contributed to the constrained inflammatory response measured in females. Discussion: Results from this study suggest that features of the acute stress response are impacted by oral ingestion of CBD-rich hemp extract in female and male rats, and the pattern of changes may be sex and tissue dependent.

Abstract
Inflammation, the body's protective response to injury and infection, plays a critical role in physical and mental health outcomes. Elevated chronic inflammation is implicated as a predictor of disease and all-cause mortality and is linked with several psychological disorders. Given that social support is associated with lower rates of mortality and psychopathology, the links between inflammation and social support are well-studied. However, there are many significant gaps related to both the specificity and generalizability of extant findings. There is a paucity of research on the association between social support and inflammation within different racial groups. Additionally, more research is warranted to understand whether social support from different sources uniquely contributes to inflammation, above and beyond other sources of support. Thus, the current study examined whether perceived emotional social support during adolescence predicted inflammation during adulthood within several racial groups. Participants (n = 3,390) were drawn from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health), identified as either Asian, Black, Latinx, White, or Multiracial, and had complete data on study variables. Consistent with our hypotheses and previous research, greater perceived support during adolescence was associated with lower inflammation during adulthood, but only for White participants. Contrastingly, greater perceived support during adolescence was associated with higher inflammation during adulthood for individuals who identified as Asian, Latinx, Black, or Multiracial. Furthermore, patterns of social support and inflammation within each racial group varied by relationship type. These results highlight the importance of studying relationship processes and health outcomes within racial groups to understand their unique, lived experiences.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The microbiome-gut-brain-axis (MGBA) is emerging as an important mechanistic link between diet and mental health. The role of significant modifiers of the MGBA, including gut microbial metabolites and systemic inflammation, in individuals comorbid with obesity and mental disorders, is under-investigated. OBJECTIVES This exploratory analysis examined associations among microbial metabolites-fecal SCFAs, plasma inflammatory cytokines, and diet with depression and anxiety scores in adults comorbid with obesity and depression. METHODS Stool and blood were obtained from a subsample (n = 34) of participants enrolled in an integrated behavioral intervention for weight loss and depression. Pearson partial correlation and multivariate analyses determined associations among changes in fecal SCFAs (propionic, butyric, acetic, and isovaleric acids), plasma cytokines [C-reactive protein, interleukin 1 beta, interleukin 1 receptor antagonist (IL-1RA), interleukin 6, and TNF-α], and 35 dietary markers over 2 mo, and changes in SCL-20 (Depression Symptom Checklist 20-item) and GAD-7 (Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-Item) scores over 6 mo. RESULTS Changes in the SCFAs and TNF-α at 2 mo were positively associated (standardized coefficients: 0.06-0.40; 0.03-0.34) with changes in depression and anxiety scores at 6 mo, whereas changes in IL-1RA at 2 mo were inversely associated (standardized coefficients: -0.24; -0.05). After 2 mo, changes in 12 dietary markers, including animal protein, were associated with changes in SCFAs, TNF-α, or IL-1RA at 2 mo (standardized coefficients: -0.27 to 0.20). Changes in 11 dietary markers, including animal protein, at 2 mo were associated with changes in depression or anxiety symptom scores at 6 mo (standardized coefficients: -0.24 to 0.20; -0.16 to 0.15). CONCLUSIONS Gut microbial metabolites and systemic inflammation may be biomarkers of importance within the MGBA, linking dietary markers, such as animal protein intake, to depression and anxiety for individuals with comorbid obesity. These findings are exploratory and warrant replication.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bipolar disorder may undertake a progressive course in a subset of patients, and research efforts have been made to understand the biological basis underlying this process. This systematic review examined the literature available on biological markers associated with illness progression in bipolar disorder. METHODS Peer-reviewed articles were assessed using Embase, PsycINFO and PubMed, as well as from external sources. After initial screening, a total of 871 citations from databases and other sources were identified. Participants with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder were included in our systematic review; however, studies with participants younger than 15 or older than 65 were excluded. All studies were assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale assessment tool, and data pertaining to the results were extracted into tabular form using Google Sheets and Google Documents. The systematic review was registered on PROSPERO international prospective register of systematic reviews (ID Number: CRD42020154305). RESULTS A total of 35 studies were included in the systematic review. Increased ventricular size and reduction of grey matter volume were the most common brain changes associated with illness progression in bipolar disorder. Among the several biomarkers evaluated in this systematic review, findings also indicate a role of peripheral inflammatory markers in this process. DISCUSSION The studies evaluating the biological basis of the illness progression in bipolar disorder are still scarce and heterogeneous. However, current evidence supports the notion of neuroprogression, the pathophysiological process related to progressive brain changes associated with clinical progression in patients with bipolar disorder. The increase in peripheral inflammatory biomarkers and the neuroanatomical changes in bipolar disorder suggest progressive systemic and structural brain alterations, respectively.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Anxiety has been identified as both a risk factor and prodromal symptom for Alzheimer's disease (AD) and related dementias, however, the underlying neurobiological correlates remain unknown. The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to examine the association between anxiety symptoms and two defining markers of AD neuropathology: amyloid-beta (Aβ) and tau. METHODS Systematic literature searches were conducted across 5 databases. Studies investigating the relationship between anxiety and AD neuropathology (i.e., Aβ and/or tau) in cognitively healthy adults were eligible. Where possible, effect sizes were combined across studies, for Aβ and tau separately, using random-effects meta-analyses. Sensitivity analyses were performed to assess whether results differed according to anxiety type (i.e., state and trait) and biomarker assessment modality (i.e., positron emission tomography and cerebrospinal fluid). RESULTS Twenty-seven studies reporting data from 14 unique cohorts met eligibility criteria. Random-effects meta-analyses revealed no associations between self-reported anxiety symptoms and either Aβ (13 studies, Fisher's z = 0.02, 95% confidence interval [CI] -0.01-0.05, p = 0.194) or tau (4 studies, Fisher's z = 0.04, 95% CI -0.02-0.09, p = 0.235). Results remained unchanged across sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSIONS In cognitively healthy adults, meta-analytic syntheses revealed no associations between anxiety symptoms and either Aβ or tau. There is a critical need, however, for larger studies with follow-up periods to examine the effect of anxiety symptom onset, severity, and chronicity on AD neuropathology. Additionally, further research investigating other potential neurobiological correlates is crucial to advance scientific understanding of the relationship between anxiety and dementia.

Abstract
The current study sought to determine the anxiolytic, antidepressant, and anti-inflammatory properties of distilled water-soluble extract of beehive (WSE-BH). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) studies were used to characterize the chemical compositions obtained from beehives extracted in water and methanol (also fractions). The GC-MS analysis identified 19 compounds in WSE-BH, including high total phenol and flavonoid contents, compared with the methanol extract (21 compounds), ethyl acetate fraction (9 compounds), and CCl4 fraction (27 compounds). The oral administration of WSE-BH (50 and 150 mg/kg) showed significant anxiolytic activities assessed by time spent in (30.80% and 39.47%, respectively) and entry into (47.49% and 55.93%, respectively) the open arms of the elevated plus-maze (EPM). Only the 150 mg/kg dose resulted in a significant effect on the number of head-dipping events in the hole-board test (HBT) (40.2 ± 2.33; p < 0.01) vs. diazepam (64.33 ± 3.16; p < 0.001). Both the 50 and 150 mg/kg doses resulted in significant (p < 0.001) decreases in immobility in the forced swim test (FST) and tail suspensions test (TST), corresponding to the effect of fluoxetine. WSE-BH inhibited histamine-induced paw edema significantly beginning at 60 min, with the 150 mg/kg dose having the highest effect at 180 min. The current findings suggested that WSE-BH had anxiolytic, antidepressant, and anti-inflammatory properties.

Abstract
Under the background of the far-reaching impact of the COVID-19 epidemic on global economic development, the interactive effect of economic recovery and pollution rebound makes the research topic of air pollution and human health receive attention again. Matching a series of new datasets and employing thermal inversion as an instrumental variable, this study investigates the physical and mental health effect of air pollution jointly in China. We find that in the short run, the above inference holds for both physical and mental health. These short-run influences are credible after a series of robustness checks and vary with different individual characteristics and geographical locations. We also find that in the long run, air pollution only damages mental health. Finally, this study calculates the health cost of air pollution. The above findings indicate that in China, the effect of air pollution on physical and mental health cannot be ignored. The government needs to consider the heterogeneity and long-run and short-run differences in the health effects of air pollution when formulating corresponding environmental and medical policies.

Abstract
Dementia involves several factors, and it is required to administer an agent with several efficiencies for its treatment. Sake is known to have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and improves the serum concentration of BDNF. This study aimed to evaluate the neuroprotective action of Japanese sake yeast on dementia of the Alzheimer disease type in rats by behavioral evaluation and neurobiochemical assessment. The rats were grouped as non-Alzheimer rats (control rats) and Alzheimer rats administrated with 0 (AD), 10 (10-AD), 20 (20-AD), 30 (30-AD), and 40 mg/kg (40-AD) of sake. Anxiety-like and depression-like behaviors, the concentrations of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), malondialdehyde (MDA), and ferric reducing ability of plasma (FRAP) were evaluated. The expressions of IL-1β, TNF-α, and IL-6 were assessed. The results showed that Alzheimer disease caused anxiety-like and depression-like behaviors (p = 0.000), decreased the concentrations of BDNF (p = 0.000) and FRAP (p = 0.000), increased the concentration of MDA (p = 0.000), and increased the expressions of IL-1β (p = 0.000), TNF-α (p = 0.000), and IL-6 (p = 0.000). The results showed that oral gavage of sake in higher doses decreased anxiety-like and depression-like behaviors (p = 0.000), increased the concentrations of BDNF (p = 0.000) and FRAP (p = 0.000), and reduced the concentration of MDA (p = 0.000) and the expressions of IL-1β (p = 0.000), TNF-α (p = 0.000), and IL-6 (p = 0.000). In sum, Japanese sake yeast can have roles in treating dementia of the Alzheimer disease type, but its mechanisms must be assessed in future studies.

Abstract
We utilize a quasi-experiment derived from China's Huai River policy to investigate the effect of air pollution on adult chronic diseases. The policy led to higher pollution exposure in cities north of the river boundary because they received centralized coal-based heating supply from the government during winter, whereas cities in the south did not. By applying a geographic regression discontinuity design based on distance from the Huai River, we determine that a 10 μg/m3 increase in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) raises chronic diseases rates by 3.2% in adults, particularly cardiorespiratory system diseases. Furthermore, the same effects are observed on multiple chronic disease rates, but the rates are reduced to 1.3%. The effect of pollution exposure varies depending on age, gender, and urban/rural status. Our findings imply that reducing 10 μg/m3 of the average nationwide level of PM2.5 concentration will save 27.46 billion CNY (4.16 billion USD) in chronic disease costs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Observational studies have shown an association between gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and anxiety disorders/depression. However, these evidences may be influenced by confounding factors. Therefore, our study aimed to determine the causal relationship between GERD and anxiety disorders/depression by conducting a bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) study. METHODS We performed a bidirectional MR analysis using summary statistics from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in European individuals. The inverse-variance weighted (IVW) method was used as the primary analytical method to assess causality. In addition, five additional MR methods [maximum likelihood, MR-Egger, weighted median, robust adjusted profile score (MR-RAPS), and mode-based estimate (MR-MBE)] were performed to supplement the IVW results. Furthermore, several sensitivity analyses were performed to assess heterogeneity, horizontal pleiotropy, and stability. Finally, a multivariable MR (MVMR) analysis was performed to determine the causal relationship by adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS MR results of the IVW method indicated that GERD significantly increases the risk of anxiety disorders [odds ratio (OR) = 1.35, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.15-1.59, P = 2.25 × 10-4] and depression (OR = 1.32, 95% CI: 1.15-1.52, P = 1.26 × 10-4). In addition, the MR results of maximum likelihood, MR-Egger, weighted median, MR-RAPS, and MR-MBE remained parallel to the IVW results. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis suggested that the results were robust, with no pleiotropy or heterogeneity detected. Nevertheless, reverse MR analysis showed that anxiety or depression did not increase GERD risk. Finally, MVMR analysis showed that the effect of GERD on increasing the risk of anxiety disorders/depression was independent of confounders. CONCLUSION This MR study supports a causal association between GERD and an increased risk of anxiety disorders and depression. Therefore, complementing symptomatic treatment of GERD with psychological assessment and necessary psychological support therapy may help reduce the risk of future anxiety disorders and depression.

Abstract
The ketogenic diet, known as a low-carbohydrate, high-protein, and high-fat diet, drastically restrains the major source of energy for the body, forcing it to burn all excess fat through a process called ketosis-the breaking down of fat into ketone bodies. First suggested as a medical treatment for children suffering from epilepsy, this diet has gained increased popularity as a rapid weight loss strategy. Over the past few years, there have been numerous studies suggesting that the ketogenic diet may provide therapeutic effects for several psychiatric conditions such as mood- and anxiety-related disorders. However, despite significant progress in research, the mechanisms underlying its therapeutic effects remain largely unexplored and are yet to be fully elucidated. This chapter provides an in-depth overview of preclinical and clinical evidence supporting the use of a ketogenic diet in the management of mood and anxiety disorders and discusses its relationship with inflammatory processes and potential mechanisms of actions for its therapeutic effects.

Abstract
The immune system and inflammation are involved in the pathological progression of various psychiatric disorders such as depression or major depressive disorder (MDD), generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) or anxiety, schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease (AD), and Huntington's disease. It is observed that levels of inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and other markers are highly increased in the abovementioned disorders. The inflammation and immune component also lead to enhance the oxidative stress. The oxidative stress and increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are considered as important factors that are involved in pathological progression of psychiatric disorders. Increase production of ROS is associated with excessive inflammation followed by cell necrosis and death. The psychotropic drugs are mainly work through modulations of neurotransmitter system. However, it is evident that inflammation and immune modulation are also having important role in the progression of psychiatric disorders. Rationale of the use of current psychotropic drugs is modulation of immune system by them. However, the effects of psychotropic drugs on the immune system and how these might contribute to their efficacy remain largely unclear. The drugs may act through modification of inflammation and related markers. The main purpose of this book chapter is to address the role of current psychotropic drugs on inflammation and immune system. Moreover, it will also address the role of inflammation in the progression of psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence of associations between psychological symptoms and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α level is scant, as is evidence on sex differences in associations for children and adolescents with obesity. This study examined sex differences in associations between psychological symptoms (self-concept, anxiety, depression, anger, and disruptive behavior) and TNF-α level in Taiwanese children and adolescents with healthy weight, overweight, or obesity. METHODS In 2010, 564 first, fourth, and seventh graders-comprising 250 children with overweight or obesity (44.3 %), 330 adolescents (58.5 %), and 303 males (53.7 %)-underwent a health examination and blood sampling and completed a questionnaire. RESULTS A significantly higher TNF-α level was found in children and adolescents with healthy weight than in those with overweight or obesity (median: 14.5 vs. 4.1 (pg/mL); p < 0.001). In multiple linear regression models, anxiety was significantly positively associated with TNF-α level in female participants with healthy weight (β = 0.11 per 10 increments in anxiety, 95 % confidence interval = 0.01-0.22). LIMITATIONS Given the cross-sectional nature of the study, no inferences of causal relationships among TNF-α level, obesity, and psychological symptoms could be made. CONCLUSIONS The findings enrich the literature on the TNF-α-psychological symptom association. Sex differences were found in children and adolescents without obesity rather than in those without obesity, and a higher TNF-α level was associated with increased anxiety in girls without obesity. The role of sex differences in the complex associations among psychological symptoms, TNF-α level, and overweight or obesity requires further investigation.

Abstract
Chronic stress may precipitate psychiatric disorders including anxiety. We reported that Repeated Social Defeat (RSD) in mice increased accumulation of inflammatory monocytes within the brain vasculature, which corresponded with increased interleukin (IL)-1 Receptor 1-mediated activation of endothelia, and augmented anxiety-like behavior. One unknown, however, is the role of immune-activated endothelia in regulating the physiological and behavioral responses to social stress. Thus, we sought to determine the RNA profile of activated endothelia and delineate the pathways by which these endothelia communicate within the brain to influence key responses to social stress. First, endothelial-specific RiboTag mice were exposed to RSD and brain endothelial mRNA profiles from the whole brain and prefrontal cortex were determined using RNAseq. RSD increased expression of cell adhesion molecules (Icam1), inflammatory genes (Lrg1, Lcn2, Ackr1, Il1r1), and cyclooxygenase-2 (Ptgs2/COX-2). In studies with IL-1R1KO mice, there was clear dependence on IL-1R1 on endothelia-associated transcripts including Lrg1, Icam1, Lcn2. Moreover, prostaglandin (PG)E2 was increased in the brain after RSD and Ptgs2 was localized to endothelia, especially within the hypothalamus. Next, a selective COX-2 inhibitor, Celecoxib (CCB), was used with social stress. RSD increased PGE2 in the brain and this was abrogated by CCB. Moreover, CCB reduced RSD-induced Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis activation with attenuation of hypothalamic paraventricular neuron activation, hypothalamic Crh expression, and corticosterone in circulation. Production, release, and accumulation of inflammatory monocytes after RSD was COX-2 independent. Nonetheless, CCB blocked anxiety-like behavior in response to RSD. Collectively, social stress stimulated specific endothelia RNA profiles associated with increased cell adhesion, IL-1 and prostaglandin signaling, HPA axis activation, and anxiety.

Abstract
Alterations to the LRRK2 gene have been associated with Parkinson's disease and alcohol consumption in animals and humans. Furthermore, these disorders are strongly related to anxiety disorders (ADs). Thus, we investigated how the LRRK2 gene might influence anxiety in humans and mice. We elaborated a systematic review based on the PRISMA Statement of studies that investigated levels of anxiety in animal or human models with alterations in the LRRK2 gene. The search was conducted in the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, and in reference lists with descriptors related to ADs and the LRRK2. From the 62 articles assessed for eligibility, 16 were included: 11 conducted in humans and seven, in mice. Lrrk2 KO mice and the LRRK2 G2019S, LRRK2 R1441G, and LRRK2 R1441C variants were addressed. Five articles reported an increase in anxiety levels concerning the LRRK2 variants. Decreased anxiety levels were observed in two articles, one focusing on the LRRK2 G2019S and the other, on the Lrrk2 KO mice. Eight other articles reported no differences in anxiety levels in individuals with Lrrk2 alterations compared to their healthy controls. This study discusses a possible influence between the LRRK2 gene and anxiety, adding information to the existing knowledge respecting the influence of genetics on anxiety.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the behavioral response of ayahuasca in rats submitted to neuroinflammation through the intraperitoneal application of lipopolysaccharide (0.63 mg/kg/mL). Eighty animals, male, about 90 days old, were divided into control and LPS groups and later into prevention and treatment subgroups. The prevention subgroup was administered ayahuasca or saline solution, via gavage, at a dose of 4 mL/kg one hour before applying LPS or saline, while the treatment subgroup received the same dose of the respective substances 24 h after intraperitoneal applications. Behavioral parameters were evaluated using open field (anxiety-like) and forced swimming (depressive-like) tests. A decrease in LPS/AYA rats in the prevention and treatment subgroups regarding anxiety-like behavior was observed. As for the depressive-like behavior, there was a decrease in the group induced to the disease model, both in the prevention subgroup (when compared to the SAL/SAL, SAL/AYA, and LPS/AYA with LPS/SAL groups) and in the treatment (when comparing SAL/SAL and LPS/AYA with LPS/SAL). This study concludes the anxiolytic and antidepressant potential of ayahuasca in an animal model of neuroinflammation, possibly due to the antineuroinflammatory effects already reported of the compound.

Abstract
Background Depression and anxiety are known to be associated with stress-induced changes in the immune system. Bothersome tinnitus can be related to stress and often co-occurs with depression and anxiety. This study investigates associations of psychological and audiological tinnitus-related factors with inflammatory parameters and immune cell subsets in chronic tinnitus patients as well as treatment-related effects. Methods This longitudinal study of inpatients treated with compact multimodal tinnitus-specific cognitive behavioral therapy included four repeated measurement sessions: baseline (N = 41), treatment end, 7.8-week (N = 35), and 13.8-week follow-up (N = 34). Data collection included audiometric testing, blood sampling, and psychometric questionnaires: Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI), Perceived Stress Questionnaire (PSQ-20), and Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale (HADS). Flow cytometry was used to analyze immune cell subsets. Statistical analyses comprised correlation and network analysis (cross-sectional), and linear mixed effect models (longitudinal). Results Bootstrapped network analysis showed negative averaged cross-sectional associations of cytotoxic natural killer (NKc) cell frequency (CD56 + CD16+) and PSQ-20 (−0.21 [−0.48, 0]) and of regulatory natural killer (NKreg) cell frequency (CD56 + CD16dim/−) and HADS anxiety (−0.14 [−0.38, 0]). No significant treatment effects were found. A negative predictive effect of baseline PSQ-20 scores (β = −6.22 [−12.18, −0.26], p = 0.041) and a positive predictive effect of baseline ferritin levels (β = 8.90 [2.76, 15.03], p = 0.004) on NKc cell frequency across the repeated measurement sessions were observed. Conclusion We observed negative relationships between perceived stress levels and NKc cell frequency and between anxiety levels and NKreg cell frequency in chronic tinnitus patients. These exploratory results suggest stress−/anxiety-related immune alterations in bothersome tinnitus but need to be tested in further confirmatory studies with larger sample sizes. The potential of NK cells as biomarkers of emotional distress in chronic tinnitus should be further investigated.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Chronic exposure to stress is a major risk factor in anxiety disorders (ADs) and can be accompanied by an altered microbiome-gut-brain axis and a compromised immune system. In recent years, the study of inflammatory processes in AD has gained special attention. Continued stress causes the reactivity of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the alteration of the intestinal microbiota and the consequent release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, affecting the sensitivity to stress and the similar behavior of anxiety. METHOD The aim of the present study was to evaluate the interrelationships between measures of proinflammatory cytokines and cortisol in patients with panic disorder (PD). RESULTS The main results of the correlation analysis revealed that the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-12, and tumor necrosis factor gamma were negatively correlated with cortisol scores (area under the curve with respect to the ground). CONCLUSIONS These results suggest that the inflammatory response is associated with the reactivity of the HPA axis in patients with PD and may influence the maintenance of anxiety behavior.

Abstract
Motor vehicle exhaust emissions have become the main source of urban air pollution in China, but few studies have explored the association of short-term exposure to traffic-related air pollutants (TRAPs) with anxiety disorders. Thus, we used an overdispersed, generalized additive model (GAM) to investigate the association between TRAPs and hospital admissions (HAs) for anxiety in Qingdao, a coastal Chinese city with high vehicle ownership. In addition, stratified analyses were performed by gender, age, season and hospitalization frequency (first admission and readmission). A positive association between TRAPs and HAs for anxiety was observed. Both inhalable particulate matter (PM10) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) showed significant effects at lag 3 in the single-day lag structure, and each 10 μg/m3 increase in the concentrations was significantly associated with increases of 0.88% [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.04%, 1.72%] for PM10 and 2.74% (0.45%, 5.08%) for NO2 on anxiety hospitalizations. For fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and carbon monoxide (CO), the strongest effects were found at lag05 and lag04 [2.67% (0.77%, 4.62%) and 0.19% (0.04%, 0.34%), respectively] in the multiday lag structure. The estimates of PM2.5 were relatively robust after adjusting for other pollutants in the two-pollutant model. Stratified analyses indicated that the associations were stronger in females and younger individuals (<45 in age) than in males and elderly individuals (≥45 in age). Furthermore, the effects of PM2.5 and CO were most obvious during the cold season. Regarding hospitalization frequency, only PM2.5 was found to have a significant effect in the first-admission group. The results showed that short-term exposure to TRAPs, especially to PM2.5, was significantly associated with the increased risk of daily HAs for anxiety, which can help clinicians and policymakers better understand the effects of TRAPs to implement targeted interventions.

Abstract
Research suggests that inflammation is an important mediator in the pathophysiology of anxiety disorders. In addition, women are more likely to develop an anxiety and depression disorder, in comorbidity with a wide spectrum of diseases related to the immune system. In recent years, hydrogen-rich water has emerged as a promising therapeutic strategy to prevent and intervene in stress-related disorders, due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The present study aims to analyze the effects of psychological treatment and a hydrogen-rich drink on the severity of anxiety and depression, pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, the cortisol awakening response, and general health state in a sample of women with panic disorder. This is a completely randomized, placebo-controlled study. The treatment group simultaneously received psychological treatment and 1.5 L of hydrogenated water for three months, compared to the control group that received psychological treatment and placebo. The results show that the treatment group was not significantly better than the control group. But there was a further reduction in measured pro-inflammatory cytokine scores, improving body pain and physical health. When between-group treatment effects were removed, psychological treatment significantly decreased measured variables, including cytokines and cortisol. The results support the presence of a maladaptive inflammatory process in women with panic disorder.

Abstract
Neuroinflammation, a protective response of the central nervous system (CNS), is associated with the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases. The CNS is composed of neurons and glial cells consisting of microglia, oligodendrocytes, and astrocytes. Entry of any foreign pathogen activates the glial cells (astrocytes and microglia) and overactivation of these cells triggers the release of various neuroinflammatory markers (NMs), such as the tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-1β (IL-10), nitric oxide (NO), and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), among others. Various studies have shown the role of neuroinflammatory markers in the occurrence, diagnosis, and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. These markers also trigger the formation of various other factors responsible for causing several neuronal diseases including Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), Huntington’s disease (HD), multiple sclerosis (MS), ischemia, and several others. This comprehensive review aims to reveal the mechanism of neuroinflammatory markers (NMs), which could cause different neurodegenerative disorders. Important NMs may represent pathophysiologic processes leading to the generation of neurodegenerative diseases. In addition, various molecular alterations related to neurodegenerative diseases are discussed. Identifying these NMs may assist in the early diagnosis and detection of therapeutic targets for treating various neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
The human gut microbiome has been implicated in a host of bodily functions and their regulation, including brain development and cognition. Neuroinflammation is a relatively newer piece of the puzzle and is implicated in the pathogenesis of many neurological disorders. The microbiome of the gut may alter the inflammatory signaling inside the brain through the secretion of short-chain fatty acids, controlling the availability of amino acid tryptophan and altering vagal activation. Studies in Korea and elsewhere highlight a strong link between microbiome dynamics and neurocognitive states, including personality. For these reasons, re-establishing microbial flora of the gut looks critical for keeping neuroinflammation from putting the whole system aflame through probiotics and allotransplantation of the fecal microbiome. However, the numerosity of the microbiome remains a challenge. For this purpose, it is suggested that wherever possible, a fecal microbial auto-transplant may prove more effective. This review summarizes the current knowledge about the role of the microbiome in neuroinflammation and the various mechanism involved in this process. As an example, we have also discussed the autism spectrum disorder and the implication of neuroinflammation and microbiome in its pathogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUNDS Household air pollution exposure is a crucial public concern and have the potential to seriously affect human health. Using biomass fuels for cooking is the main contributor to household air pollution. However, current evidence linked between cooking with biomass fuels and mental health remains limited. OBJECTIVES To explore whether cooking with biomass fuels is associated with depression and anxiety symptoms among older adults in China. METHODS We obtained data from Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS). Depressive and anxiety symptoms were assessed using the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D-10) and the 7-item Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale (GAD-7), respectively. Primary cooking fuel type was self-reported. We used logistic regression and linear regression to evaluate the effects of cooking with biomass fuels on depression and anxiety. RESULTS A total of 13,361 participants aged 65 years and older (mean age, 84.2 ± 11.5 years) were included in the presented study. A positive association was found between cooking with biomass fuels and both depression symptoms (adjusted odds ratio 1.23, 95% CI 1.03 to 1.47) and anxiety symptoms (adjusted odds ratio 1.31, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.68). Biomass fuel users had a higher depression scores (0.33, 95% CI 0.03 to 0.61) and a higher anxiety scores (0.20, 95% CI 0.02 to 0.38) compared to clean fuel users. We found no significant interactions between participant characteristics and biomass fuel use on either depression or anxiety symptoms. CONCLUSIONS Cooking with biomass fuels was associated with depression and anxiety symptoms in order adults. Further large prospective cohort studies are warranted to confirm this association.
