Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES This study's aim was to evaluate the effects of unilateral posterior crossbite (UPXB) treatment with the appliance Function Generating Bite (FGB) on the asymmetry of mandibular condyles and rami. MATERIALS/METHODS This retrospective study included 156 patients: 52 with UPXB (F = 30, M = 22, mean age ± SD = 7.9 ± 1.5 [yr.mo]) treated with FGB, 104 age and gender-matched control subjects without the malocclusion (control-T0: N = 52, F = 30, M = 22, mean age ± SD = 8.2 ± 1.3; control-T1, n = 52, F = 30, M = 22, mean age ± SD 9.7 ± 1.2). Pre- (T0) and post-treatment (T1) orthopantomographies were analyzed by finding the intersection between a line tangent to the lateral profile of the condyle and ramus and a perpendicular line tangent to the condylar head; the intersection and tangent points were used to measure condylar and ramal heights and to calculate the percentage difference between the sides (asymmetry index). Cephalometric analysis was performed on lateral skull X-rays taken at T0 and T1. RESULTS Condylar asymmetry was significantly increased in UPXB at T0 (P < 0.00001) but not at T1. Between T0/T1 the asymmetry was significantly reduced (P < 0.01). Cephalometric analysis showed that mandibular clockwise rotation was significantly increased in UPXB at T0 (P < 0,01) but not at T1, when the clockwise rotation was significantly reduced (P < 0.05). LIMITATIONS This study did not include an untreated UPXB group and did not evaluate condylar morphology, Conclusions/implications: Functional treatment of UPXB with FGB was associated with a significant reduction in condylar asymmetry and significant mandibular repositioning, highlighting that FGB could rebalance condylar growth in developing patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The aim was to establish whether there is a relationship between the presence of unilateral posterior crossbite (u-PCB) and the mesio-distal inclination of permanent upper canines, the angulation of the occlusal plane, or the labial commissure inclination in children. METHODS A cross-sectional association study was conducted. Panoramic radiography was used to measure the inclination of the canines and the occlusal plane, and frontal rest photography was used to measure the inclination of the labial commissure. The measurements were performed with tpsDig264 software version 2.25, 2016, Ecology & Evolution, SUNY), and the data obtained were analyzed with SPSS 22.0 software, using ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests for the statistical analysis. RESULTS A total of 106 patients with u-PCB and 41 patients in the control group were studied. No statistically significant differences were observed in the inclination of the right and left canines in patients with u-PCB compared to patients in the control group. There is a relationship between the presence of u-PCB and the inclination of the occlusal plane. No statistically significant differences were observed in the inclination of the labial commissure in patients with u-PCB compared to patients in the control group. CONCLUSIONS There is no relationship between the presence of u-PCB and the alteration in the eruptive trajectory of the permanent upper canines or in the inclination of the labial commissure. However, a relationship between the presence of u-PCB and altered occlusal plane inclination was found.

Abstract
Introduction Unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) often leads to maxillary hypoplasia and skeletal Class III malocclusion, with conflicting evidence on mandibular asymmetry. This study evaluated vertical mandibular asymmetry in UCLP patients, comparing them with non-cleft individuals having skeletal Class III and Class I malocclusions. Methods Mandibular asymmetry was evaluated using orthopantomograms (OPGs) from 90 subjects divided into three groups of 30 each: UCLP group, non-cleft skeletal Class III, and non-cleft skeletal Class I. Measurements included condylar height, ramal height, condylar + ramal height, gonial angle, antigonial notch depth, mandibular body length, and total mandibular length. These parameters were analyzed to assess vertical mandibular asymmetry. Asymmetry indices were calculated for condylar, ramal, and combined condylar and ramal heights to compare mandibular symmetry across the groups. Results The UCLP group showed significant vertical asymmetry, with reduced condylar (-1.267 mm), ramal (-1.700 mm), and combined heights (-2.967 mm) on the cleft side, along with shorter mandibular body (-3.633 mm) and total lengths (-4.067 mm). Asymmetry indices in UCLP were comparable to non-cleft skeletal Class III but significantly differed from non-cleft skeletal Class I for condylar asymmetry (p = 0.042). No significant differences were found between non-cleft skeletal Class III and skeletal Class I groups. Conclusion This study revealed significant vertical mandibular asymmetry in UCLP patients, with reduced condylar and ramal heights on the cleft side. UCLP patients exhibited greater condylar asymmetry compared to skeletal Class I individuals, but no significant differences were found with non-cleft skeletal Class III patients. Early intervention is crucial to address these growth disturbances and improve patient outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to evaluate if there are any morphologic, positional, and volumetric differences in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) of patients with unilateral posterior crossbite (UPC) compared to controls. Another objective was to analyse the discrepancy in the TMJ between the crossbite versus non-crossbite side in UPC versus right and left sides in controls. Additionally, this study aimed to evaluate the differences in the bone density at the masseteric insertion site at the angle of mandible in the UPC group and control group. MATERIAL AND METHODS One hundred and thirty-two CBCTs were analysed with 66 patients in UPC group and 66 patients in control group (non-crossbite). Temporomandibular joint spaces - Anterior joint space (AJS), Superior joint space (SJS), Posterior joint space (PJS), Medial joint space (MJS), Middle joint space (MiJS), and Lateral joint space (LJS) were measured. Additionally, bone density at angle of mandible and volume of mandibular condyle were evaluated. The measurements were compared between the groups as well as between the crossbite and non-crossbite sides within the UPC group and between right and left sides within the control group. Furthermore, the associations between UPC and changes in TMJ regarding joint space availability, bone density, condylar head volume, and the effects of sex and age were evaluated using regression analysis. RESULTS It was observed that UPC group showed a greater condylar volume, than the control group. Additionally, a larger mean discrepancy was observed between the crossbite side and non-crossbite side within the UPC group concerning condylar volume than controls. Concerning age, condylar volume was observed to be larger in adults than children. Adults showed significantly greater bone density and condylar volume than adolescents. Concerning sex, it was observed that males showed a larger SJS (right), MiJS, LJS, and bone density at the mandibular angle than females. CONCLUSION There is a difference in the TMJ parameters particularly condylar volume in patients with UPC compared to controls.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study evaluated the probability of developing malocclusions in mixed dentition. METHODS A longitudinal study was conducted with 598 children (aged 5 years) in deciduous dentition. The children were followed for 3 years until mixed dentition (aged 8 years). Overjet, overbite, and transversal relations were evaluated. Bayesian models were used to analyze the data and estimate the parameters. RESULTS The parameter θ was used for the distributions, indicating the probability of presenting a given condition with a credibility index (ICr) of 95%. After 3 years of follow-up, 121 children were reevaluated. The results showed that children have a high probability of malocclusion in mixed dentition. There was a higher probability of developing an increased overjet in the mixed dentition of 20.5% (ICr 95%, 13.6-28.4) to 48.3% (ICr 95%, 39.1-57.7) and a higher probability of having a normal overbite in the deciduous dentition and a lower probability in the mixed dentition (ICr 95%, 9.2-21.3). CONCLUSIONS Considering the probabilistic model of Bayesian analysis, children with normal overjet in the deciduous dentition may show an increased overjet in the mixed dentition. Concerning overbite, children may present an anterior open bite during the transition between deciduous and mixed dentition, as well as self-correction of deep overbite in mixed dentition. Furthermore, they may present a posterior crossbite during the mixed dentition when there is a normal transverse relationship in the deciduous dentition.

Abstract
Background Facial asymmetry results from variation in mandibular linear and angular dimensions on the right and left sides of the face. Mandibular asymmetry is of great significance to oral surgeons and orthodontists as it directly impacts the facial profile of an individual. Aim The present study aimed to measure the prevalence of mandibular asymmetry and its fluctuations during the mixed dentition growth phase in healthy children aged 6-8 years in the Jazan region of Saudi Arabia. Method This retrospective observational study was conducted by measuring linear asymmetrical measurements of mandible on orthopantomograms of 390 healthy children (182 boys and 208 girls, aged 6-8 years) with mixed dentition. Linear measurements from orthopantomograms were obtained using a standardized digitizer. Two sets of mandibular measurements were recorded, alongside subjective assessments of mandibular first molar development. An independent t-test was employed to assess the significance between measurements on both sides, while one-way ANOVA was used to demonstrate facial asymmetry significance among different age groups. Result The result of this study revealed a significant statistical difference (p-value≤ 0.05) for both sides of the mandible across two dimensions: condylar and ramus height (p value = 0.03) and mandibular length (p value = 0.04). The asymmetry index resulted in no asymmetry among most of the included subjects. However, compared to the other three linear measurements, many seven-year-old participants possess mandibular asymmetry on condylar height (54.5 %). Conclusion Within the limitation it could be concluded that children in growing age have a significant mandibular asymmetry (mainly 7 years), which, however, is only seldom clinically significant. Hence, treatment plan should be cautiously planned.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study aimed to evaluate mandibular asymmetry in unilateral posterior crossbite (UPXB) patients and compare the asymmetry between adolescents and adults with UPXB. METHODS This study included and analyzed cone-beam computed tomography scans of 125 subjects. The subjects were divided into a UPXB group and a control group according to the presence or absence of UPXB, and each group included adolescent patients (aged 10-15 years) and adult patients (aged 20-40 years). Linear, angular, and volumetric measurements were obtained to evaluate the asymmetries of the mandibles. RESULTS Both adolescent and adult patients in the UPXB group presented asymmetries in condylar unit length, ramal height, body length, and mediolateral ramal inclination (P <0.05). Adult patients with UPXB showed greater asymmetries than adolescents. Differences with condylar unit length, condylar unit width, ramal height, condylar unit volume, and hemimandibular volume were significantly greater in adult UPXB patients than adolescent UPXB patients (P <0.05). CONCLUSIONS The worsening of mandibular asymmetries in UPXB adults suggests that asymmetry in UPXB patients may progress over time; therefore, early treatment should be considered for UPXB adolescent patients. Further studies are still needed to evaluate the effectiveness of early treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to compare the asymmetry index determined on digital panoramic radiographic (PR) images and posteroanterior cephalometric (PACR) images. METHODS This study included 100 patients whose PR and PACR images were registered in a database. Condylar height, ramus height, and condylar height plus ramus height measurements were measured bilaterally. Condylar asymmetry, ramus asymmetry, and total asymmetry were evaluated. RESULTS There was a statistically significant difference between the right and left side for all measurements when evaluated on the PR and also on the PACR images (p < 0.01). When calculating the asymmetry index, the resulting condylar asymmetry and ramus asymmetry values did not show significant differences between PR and PACR images. On the other hand, only the presence of total asymmetry showed a statistically significant difference between techniques (p = 0.013). CONCLUSION Asymmetry indices can be reliably obtained from both PR and PACR images.

Abstract
BACKGROUND To study the dentoskeletal characteristics and the degree of compensations in skeletal Class I adults with unilateral posterior crossbite (UPCB). METHODS A sample of 40 adults was chosen for this cross-sectional study. 20 skeletal Class I adults with UPCB (mean age: 22.20 ± 2.88 years), were compared to 20 skeletal Class I adults with normal occlusion (mean age: 27.56 ± 5.76 years). The respective dentoskeletal measurements were made on cross-sectional images from cone-beam computed tomography scans. RESULTS Skeletally, both groups showed significant differences (P < 0.05) in mandibular corpus length and menton deviation with the UPCB group showing the greatest displacement. Maxillomandibular vertical asymmetry and condylar positional asymmetry were not significant in both groups (P > 0.05). For dental variables on the second premolar and first molar, the UPCB group showed greater linear and angular differences when compared to the control group (P < 0.05). On the crossbite side, maxillary posterior teeth were more buccally inclined, and mandibular posterior teeth were more lingually inclined. However, on the non-crossbite side, both maxillary and mandibular posterior teeth were lingually inclined. CONCLUSION Adults with UPCB showed distinct transverse dentoskeletal asymmetry. No asymmetry was found in the condylar position and the mandibular height in UPCB adults.

Abstract
Unilateral posterior crossbite (UXB) is a common, severely asymmetric malocclusion, characterized by maxillary hypoplasia and masticatory dysfunction. The aim of this research is to evaluate the asymmetry of mandibular condyles and rami in children with UXB. This comparative cross-sectional study included 33 children with UXB (girls = 15, boys = 18; mean age ± SD = 8.0 ± 1.3 years.months]) and 33 age- and gender-matched controls (girls = 15, boys = 18; mean age ± SD = 8.4 ± 1.3 years.months]). Pre-treatment OPGs were analyzed by comparing the height of condyles and rami between the sides using the method by Habets et al. (1988); the result was considered significant if the degree of asymmetry was >6%. Children with UXB showed a significantly increased asymmetry of mandibular condyles (mean ± SD = 10.7% ± 9, p < 0.001), but not of rami (mean ± SD = 1.9% ± 2.3), compared to controls. The rami did not show significant asymmetry in either group. The presence of an increased condylar asymmetry index in a developing patient with unilateral posterior crossbite is a sign of altered skeletal growth and should be considered in the diagnostic process and treatment plan.

Abstract
Subjects with facial skeletal asymmetries have a higher incidence of anterior temporomandibular joint disc displacement. The objective of the study was to consolidate existing evidence on the connection between temporomandibular joint disc displacement and mandibular asymmetry in youngsters and adolescents. A thorough examination was undertaken in the following databases: PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane. To judge the publications’ methodological quality Newcastle Ottawa Scale was used. From the 1011 identified records, eight were selected for the qualitative synthesis and five for the quantitative synthesis, amounting to 692 subjects. Fifteen cephalometric variables were meta-analyzed. The distance from menton (Me) to midline (lateral mandibular asymmetry) was significantly shorter [−1.75 (95% CI −2.43–−1.07), p ≤ 0.001] in subjects with disc displacement compared to those without disc displacement. The distance from articulare (Ar) to gonion (Go) was significantly longer [3.74 (95% CI 1.04–6.44), p = 0.007] in subjects with disc displacement compared to those without disc displacement. The relationship between distance from articulare (Ar) to gonion (Go) or sella (S) to gonion (Go) and disc displacement was shown to be close to statistical significance level, but not for other cephalometric data. Disc displacement was associated with several cephalometric measurement variations in children and adolescents.

Abstract
Background To evaluate condylar morphology, ramus height, and asymmetry indexes in patients with different vertical skeletal patterns and to determine the association between condylar and ramal measurements with the mandibular plane angle. Methods Dental panoramic radiographs of 60 patients with different skeletal patterns were evaluated. According to the cranial base (Sella-Nasion)-mandibular plane (SN-MP) angle, the patients were divided into three groups: normal angle (NA), low angle (LA), and high angle (HA). The condylar area, condylar perimeter, condylar heights, and ramus height were measured, and the asymmetry index value of each measurement was calculated. A one-way analysis of variance as well as a post hoc Tukey and Kruskall-Wallis tests were used to determine intergroup differences. Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used to determine the relationship between all measurements and SN-MP. Results The intergroup comparison of condylar area, condylar perimeter, condylar heights, and ramus height measurements showed that the patients in the LA group have statistically significantly greater values compared to those in the HA group. A statistically significant difference was detected between the NA and LA groups only in the condylar area measurements. There was no statistical difference only in the ramus height measurements between the NA and HA groups. Asymmetry index values of the groups were similar. The negative correlations were found between all measurements and the SN-MP angle. Conclusion HA individuals have lower ramus heights and smaller condylar morphologies than NA and LA individuals. In addition, as the SN-MP angle increases, the condyle dimensions and ramus height decrease, and this is a clinically important finding.

Abstract
Introduction: Several orthodontic problems should already be treated at an early age to prevent the necessity of future complex and expensive procedures. Scientific evidence suggests that posterior crossbites, mild to moderate Class III, as well as certain Class II malocclusions, open bites and arch length discrepancies can benefit from simple, but efficient interceptive therapy. Objective: To summarize the existing evidence-based literature on early orthodontic treatment, and to illustrate its application and effectiveness by showcasing multiple clinical examples. Conclusion: Early short-term interceptive orthodontic treatment with simple appliances, in the deciduous or early mixed dentition phase, can efficiently correct certain malocclusions and help to either reduce the complexity or even avoid the necessity of complex and expensive procedures during puberty. For certain patients with significant arch length discrepancy the concept of serial extractions should be part of the orthodontic armamentarium.

Abstract
Background: The presence of posterior crossbite can trigger aesthetic and functional changes as mandibular asymmetry in individuals, contributing to asymmetrical muscle function. Mandibular asymmetry and respective condyle adaptation may be an etiological factor in temporomandibular disorder. This study aims to evaluate the effects of maxillary expansion on the position and angulation of the condyles as well as the intercondylar distance in children with cleft lip and palate. Methods: Twenty-five individuals with cleft lip and palate who underwent maxillary expansion were selected. Condylar changes were evaluated by cone beam computed tomography using the Pullinger and Hollender formula. To determine the statistically significant differences between the variables, the Student t-test and the Benjamini–Hochberg correction method for multiple comparisons were used. Results: No statistically significant differences between angulation and condylar position before and after maxillary expansion were found. The intercondylar distance tended to increase in growing individuals with cleft lip and palate after maxillary expansion. Conclusions: Intercondylar distance shows a tendency to increase after expansion regardless of the cleft phenotype. No differences were found in angulation and condylar position with the changes in occlusion resulting from maxillary expansion.

Abstract
Objective CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) analysis of condyle morphometry, to investigate the gender differences, symmetry and relationship with mandibular size. Materials and methods This is a retrospective study. 800 CBCT scan obtained for the measurement of condyle in anterior-posterior and medio-lateral aspect using OnDemand 3D software. Participants were Saudi nationals of age above 18 years. 395 Males and 405 Females with the mean age of 38.2 ± 10.5 years. Right and left anterior-posterior width and medio-lateral width of the condyle were measured. Condyles were not isolated on the CBCT for volume measurement. Results Mean right and anterior-posterior condyle width was 9.02 mm and 8.74 mm in males whereas in females it was 9.01 mm 8.69 mm respectively. For males mean medio-lateral width of the condyle in right and left side was 17.40 mm and 16.95 mm. For females, mean medio-lateral width of the condyle in right and left side was 17.14 mm and 16.93 mm. The prediction rate of gender was 57.2% for males and 53.3% for females. Statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) were found in the anterior-posterior and medio-lateral width of right and left condyles among males and females. Left anterior-posterior and medio-lateral width of average vs small mandible shows statistically significant difference (p < 0.05). Conclusion Condyle morphometry is a weak predictor for gender. Irrespective of gender, right and left condyle are asymmetrical in relation to condyle morphometry of anterior-posterior and medio-lateral aspect. Left mandibular condyle morphometry is different in relation to the mandible size.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This study was aimed at evaluating the association between vertical skeletal patterns, condylar height symmetry, and temporomandibular disorders in adults. METHODS The study sample consisted of 200 patients (ages 18-30 years old) retrospectively recruited: 100 with temporomandibular disorders (TMD) and 100 without TMD (control), diagnosed by Diagnostic Criteria for the Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD). For each subject, skeletal divergence was assessed on lateral cephalograms, and condylar height symmetry was evaluated by orthopantomography (Habets' method). RESULTS Subjects with temporomandibular disorders showed a strong association with condylar asymmetry (p < 0.0001) and, for the skeletal pattern variables, hyperdivergence (p < 0.001). A correlation with the female sex was also found (p < 0.04), while there was no difference in terms of age in the 2 groups (p > 0.29). CONCLUSIONS Although it does not imply a direct cause-and-effect relationship, the present study suggests condylar asymmetry and hyperdivergent skeletal pattern are more likely to be associated with a higher risk of temporomandibular disorder joint diseases in adult patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the mandibular skeletal asymmetry in pre-orthodontic patients with the unilateral posterior dental crossbite (UPCB). MATERIALS AND METHODS Using a retrospective design, 30 pre-orthodontic patients with a UPCB, (16 on the right side, 14 on the left side), 18 females and 12 males were selected (mean age: 21.2±4.92 years), along with 30 controls matched by age and sex with cl I occlusal relationship (mean age: 21.9±4.80 years). The patients were from an Orthodontic Department of Dental Faculty of Hamadan University of Medical Sciences and a private office from 2009 to 2013. In the UPCB group, at least one molar tooth was in the crossbite position. All the patients had initial CBCT1 and pre-orthodontic study models. 10 linear and 3 angular measurements were performed to evaluate the mandibular skeletal asymmetry. repeated measure-ANCOVA2 by controlling the effect of age and sex, T-test and paired-samples t-test were used for comparisons. Measurement's reliability was measured with ICC3 test. RESULTS There was a positional deviation of mandible to the crossbite side 95% CI4 (0.166 - 1.087). The intergroup analysis showed that Corpus Length (P≤0.014), Ramus Angle in frontal view (P≤0.046), and Condylar-Width in axial view (P≤0.029) in the crossbite side of the case group were significantly smaller than the control group. In the subjects with UPCB, mandibular condylar width was smaller in the crossbite side (17.31±2.50) relative to the non-crossbite side (18.06±2.18). CONCLUSIONS The adults with dental UPCB, in addition to deviation to crossbite side, may show smaller condylar head and Corpus length in crossbite side relative to the control group.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed at assessing changes in condylar position (CP) in growing patients with unilateral posterior crossbite (UPC) undergoing rapid maxillary expansion (RME) followed by fixed orthodontic treatment (FOT) (experimental-group); and growing patients without posterior crossbite (PC) treated with FOT alone (control-group). METHODS Cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images were obtained before treatment (T0), 6 months after RME (T1) and after FOT (T2) for the experimental-group (n = 19); and at T0 and T2 for the control-group (n = 22). Condylar position-related measurements including the anterior joint space (AJS), superior joint space (SJS), posterior joint space (PJS), lateral position of condyle (LC) and condylar angle (CA) were measured. Non-parametric tests were used. RESULTS On the crossbite side, significant increases were found in LC (P = 0.039) and CA (P = 0.007), and on the non-crossbite side significant increases were observed in SJS (P = 0.027) and LC (P = 0.001) between T0, T1 and T2 in patients with UPC. On the right and left sides in the control-group, significant increases were identified in LC (P < 0.001 and P = 0.012, respectively) between T0 and T2. CONCLUSIONS In growing patients with UPC, RME followed by FOT is associated with significant changes in CP-related measurements.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The purpose of this study was to evaluate mandibular asymmetry in youngsters with posterior unilateral crossbite (PUXB), through cone-beam computed tomography and reverse engineering technique, before and after rapid maxillary expansion (RME) treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS Forty cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images were obtained from all patients at two time points, namely T0 acquired before the placement of a Hyrax expander and T1 after appliance removal. The CBCT scans were segmented and volume rendered into a surface there-dimensional (3D) mesh model. Thereafter, mandibular models were digitally registered by using a "best-fit" algorithm. Surface and volumetric changes, between T0 and T1, were compared by using Student's t tests. RESULTS A slight increase of 0.45 cm3 of the total mandibular volume was found at T1 when compared with T0 (p < 0.001). The mandibular hemi-volume on the crossbite side (CB) was slightly smaller than the non-crossbite side both at T0 and T1. However, the mean differences of hemi-volume from the CB (crossbite) and non-CB side between T0 and T1 show a decrease of 0.26 cm3 (p < 0.001). Findings for the surface-to-surface deviation analysis demonstrated a fine percentage of matching at T0 which slightly improved at T1 (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Youngsters affected by PUXB showed a very slight and not statistically significant volumetric and morphological asymmetry between CB side and non-CB side at T0. However, the change in mean differences of 0.26 cm cannot be considered clinically relevant. CLINICAL RELEVANCE Mandibles in young PUXB patients exhibit only a very mild mandibular asymmetry. Although the statistically significant mean change found right after RME removal cannot be considered clinically relevant, a more consistent sample and a longer follow-up could be of interest in explaining the short-term findings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate mandibular morphology in adults affected by posterior unilateral crossbite (PUXB) and to evaluate the hemi mandibular volumes from the crossbite (CB) and non-CB sides of the same patients. METHODS Thirty-eight cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images were consecutively recruited and the Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM)-formatted scans were volume rendered into a surface three-dimensional (3D) mesh model and volumes to obtain the 3D model of the mandibular bone. To achieve the surface point-to-point analysis of the mandibular models, a reverse engineering software was used. The same procedure was performed for an age-matched control group (19 CBCT images). RESULTS Total mandibular volume showed a difference of 2.46 cm3 between patients and controls, which was not statistically significant. A mean difference of 1.53 cm3 was found comparing the hemi mandibular volumes from the CB and non-CB sides of PUXB patients, this difference was statistically significant (P ≤ 0.01). Findings for the surface-to-surface deviation analysis, demonstrated a higher percentage of mismatch in patients PUXB, over 10% at 0.5 mm tolerance level. LIMITATIONS Limitations are related to the intrinsic surfaces matching methodology, that make difficult to evaluate discrepancies among different mandibular anatomical units. CONCLUSION Adult patients affected by PUXB show a greater mandibular structural asymmetry compared to controls because of a lower matching percentage obtained from the surface-to-surface matching technique. IMPLICATIONS Treatment of adult patients affected by PUXB should take into consideration the possibility of a mild mandibular asymmetry mainly localized at the condyle and gonial angle levels.

Abstract
Craniofacial asymmetry, mandibular condylar modeling and temporomandibular joint disorders are common comorbidities of skeletally disproportionate malocclusions, but etiology of occurrence together is poorly understood. We compared asymmetry, condyle modeling stability and temporomandibular health in a cohort of 128 patients having orthodontics and orthognathic surgery to correct dentofacial deformity malocclusions. We also compared ACTN3 and ENPP1 genotypes for association to clinical conditions. Pre-surgical posterior-anterior cephalometric and panometric radiographic analyses; jaw pain and function questionnaire and clinical examination of TMD; and SNP-genotype analysis from saliva samples were compared to assess interrelationships. Almost half had asymmetries in need of surgical correction, which could be subdivided into four distinct morphological patterns. Asymmetric condyle modeling between sides was significantly greater in craniofacial asymmetry, but most commonly had an unanticipated pattern. Often, longer or larger condyles occurred on the shorter mandibular ramus side. Subjects with longer ramus but dimensionally smaller condyles were more likely to have self-reported TMD symptoms (p = 0.023) and significantly greater clinical diagnosis of TMD (p = 0 .000001), with masticatory myalgia most prominent. Genotyping found two significant genotype associations for ACTN3 rs1671064 (Q523R missense) p = 0.02; rs678397 (intronic SNP) p = 0.04 and one significant allele association rs1815739 (R577X nonsense) p = 0.00. Skeletal asymmetry, unusual condyle modeling and TMD are common and interrelated components of many dentofacial deformities. Imbalanced musculoskeletal functional adaptations and genetic or epigenetic influences contribute to the etiology, and require further investigation.

Abstract
Background: We compared photogrammetry-assessed body posture between young adults with and without unilateral posterior crossbite (UPCB). Assessments were controlled by vision, mandibular position and sitting/standing position. In addition, we aimed to determine the relationship between UPCB laterality and the direction of body posture using photogrammetry and a static postural platform. Methods: Adults with natural dentition, with and without UPCB, were enrolled. Static body posture was assessed by photogrammetry based on horizontal acromial alignment and horizontal anterior-superior iliac spine (ASIS) alignment. Frontal photographs were taken with participants asked to open or close their eyes and hold their jaws at rest, at an intercuspal position, and at left or right lateral positions. Distribution of foot pressure was recorded using a static postural platform at different visual input and mandibular positions. General linear models with repeated measures were used to assess the effect of the various within- and between-subject factors. Results: In total, 36 adults (left UPCB = 12; Right UPCB = 6; controls = 18) participated. There were significant differences between the control and UPCB groups in horizontal alignment at the acromion (p = 0.035) and ASIS (p = 0.026) levels when controlled by visual input and mandibular position. No significant differences in horizontal alignment or foot pressure distribution were observed by laterality in the UPCB group. Conclusion: The presence of UPCB affects static body posture, but the side of crossbite is not related to the direction of effect on static body posture.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To compare, using surface-to-surface (StS) matching, any shape differences between the crossbite and noncrossbite side of the glenoid fossa and articular eminence in adult patients affected by posterior unilateral crossbite (PUXB) and compare them with unaffected controls. MATERIALS AND METHODS 32 cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans of patients (mean age: 23.72 ± 3.74 years) undergoing surgical maxillary expansion were analyzed to obtain three-dimensional models of the left and right glenoid fossae that were superimposed using stable anatomical reference points and then compared using StS matching to evaluate the presence of any shape differences. These findings were compared with those obtained from 16 CBCT scans of unaffected controls (mean age: 23.72 ± 3.73 years). RESULTS A mean difference of >11% was found between the study group and controls when comparing the matching percentages of the two sides of the glenoid fossa and articular eminence at all three levels of tolerance selected for this study. These differences were found to be highly statistically significant (P ≤ .0001). CONCLUSIONS According to the shape analysis findings, adult PUXB patients exhibit a higher degree of glenoid fossa and articular eminence shape differences compared to unaffected controls.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to evaluate craniofacial asymmetry in children with transverse maxillary deficiency, with or without functional unilateral posterior crossbite (UPC), before and after rapid maxillary expansion (RME). SETTING AND SAMPLE POPULATION A sample of 51 children with cone beam computed tomography scans obtained before RME (T1) and a year after RME (T2). MATERIAL AND METHODS This prospective study consisted of 2 groups: 25 children with functional UPC (6.77 ± 1.5 years) and 26 children without UPC (7.41 ± 1.31 years). Linear and angular measurements were obtained from zygomatic, maxilla, glenoid fossa and mandible, using original and mirrored 3D overlapped models. All right and left side comparisons in both groups and intergroups asymmetries were compared using MANOVA and t test for independent samples, respectively, statistically significant at P < .05. RESULTS The UPC group showed no side differences, but mandibular horizontal rotation at T1, and this asymmetry was improved in T2. The non-UPC group showed at baseline significant lateral asymmetry in orbitale, position of palatine foramen, respectively, in average 2.95 mm and 1.16 mm, and 0.49 mm of average asymmetry in condylar height. The glenoid fossa was symmetric in both groups at T1 and T2. CONCLUSIONS Children with transverse maxillary deficiency showed slight morphological asymmetry, located in the mandible position in cases of UPC, and in the orbital and maxillary regions in cases without UPC. One year after RME, patients improved their craniofacial asymmetry, with significant changes in the mandible and correction of the mandibular rotation in patients who presented UPC.

Abstract
Centric relation (CR) is one of the core research contents in orthodontics, prosthodontics, and gnathology, acting as an important physiological factor in reconstructing the occlusion and adjusting the occlusal relationship. For over a century, CR is still a controversial subject in dentistry. CR has been redefined for several times, and recently, its application has been widened in orthodontics, including orthodontic diagnosis, clinical examination and analysis, and treatment goals. The purpose of this article is to review the definition of CR, its relationship with malocclusion, and the application of this relationship in orthodontic treatment.

Abstract
Objectives:
This study investigated the effect of unilateral occlusal elevation in the molar region on facial and mandibular development in growing rats.
Materials and Methods:
Thirty 5-week-old male Wistar rats were randomly allocated to three groups (n = 10). The control group was allowed to develop naturally until 9 weeks of age. A device fitted on the caused unilateral occlusal elevation at 5 weeks in the removal group. The device was removed at 7 weeks and the rats were observed until 9 weeks. In the continuation group, the same device fitted on the left-side molars caused unilateral occlusal elevation continuously for 9 weeks. All groups underwent craniofacial scanning with three-dimensional micro-computed tomography at 5, 7, and 9 weeks.
Results:
In the removal and continuation groups, the mandible was displaced to the unelevated side. At 7 weeks, both these groups showed greater skeletal growth and molar extrusion on the elevated side, with significant differences between the elevated and unelevated sides. At 9 weeks, there were significant differences in both skeletal and alveolar growth between these groups; the asymmetry ameliorated in the removal group.
Limitations:
We evaluated three-dimensional morphometry by fitting a device to rat molars for a short observation period; thus, future studies are warranted to acquire data following long-term observation.
Conclusion:
Unilateral occlusal elevation during the growth period suppressed molar eruption and extrusion on the elevated and unelevated sides, respectively. The height of the mandibular ramus increased on the elevated side, resulting in asymmetric growth.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Stress relieving corticoto mies during the treatment of maxillary expansion are needed in adult patients. METHODS Three-dimensional (3D) finite element model was prepared, and finite element analysis was processed to evaluate the stress distributions within the skull and maxillary teeth during surgically assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME) treatment. RESULTS Expansion forces generated more stress on the corticotomy-applied part of the maxilla. The stress levels decreased dramatically above the corticotomy line. CONCLUSION Asymmetric transveral maxillary expansion might be achieved from a symmetric force generating screw during SARME treatment. SARME osteotomies may concentrate the stress in the expanding maxilla and reduce the pain in other parts of the cranium.

Abstract
This study aimed to quantify the height of the mandibular condyle and ramus, condylar volume, and the asymmetry index in adult patients of different sex, skeletal class and vertical pattern using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), and to determine whether there were differences between these groups. The study used CBCT scans of 159 patients with a mean age of 32.32 ± 8.31 years. InVivoDental® software was used to perform both linear (condylar, ramal, and total height) and condylar volume measurements. Linear and volumetric asymmetries were calculated. There were not significant differences between right and left sides. The mean value obtained for condyle height was 7.27 mm, ramus height 42.3 mm, total height 49.6 mm and condyle volume 1907.1 mm3, with significant differences between men and women. Significantly higher values were found for condylar volume in hypodivergent patterns (p = 0.001) and for the asymmetry index of the condylar volume in Class II patients (p < 0.05). The prevalence of relevant asymmetry was high for condyle height and volume (73.1% y 75.6% respectively). Higher height and volume values were found among men, Class III, and hypodivergent patients. Linear and volumetric asymmetries were more prevalent among men, Class III and hyperdivergent patterns.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The purposes of this study were to compare the asymmetry index using panoramic radiography and cone-beam computed tomography for detecting mandibular posterior asymmetry and to evaluate the diagnostic value of the asymmetry index on panoramic radiography. METHODS A total of 43 patients were included in this study. Ten mandibular posterior distances were measured using panoramic radiography and cone-beam computed tomography, and 10 asymmetry index values were calculated. The reliability of each asymmetry index was assessed. For evaluating validity of each asymmetry index using panoramic radiography, the paired t test and the Bland-Altman analysis were used. The accuracy of the asymmetry index and the area under the curve of receiver operator characteristic were calculated. RESULTS The asymmetry index of total ramal height showed good reliability (ICC, >0.888). In condylar height 1, specificity and negative predictive value were low (0.08 and 0.17, respectively), 95% limits of agreement were ±17.9%, and area under the curve was 0.484. In total, ramal height accuracy was 0.86, and areas under the curve were 0.926 to 0.957. CONCLUSIONS For detecting asymmetry of the condyle region, the asymmetry index using panoramic radiography had little diagnostic value, and we recommend using cone-beam computed tomography images. However, the asymmetry index for total ramal height showed good reliability and relatively higher validity, and its diagnostic value was excellent.

Abstract
Objective: The purpose of the present study was to compare mandibular vertical asymmetry in patients with unilateral and bilateral cleft lip and palate and subjects with normal occlusion. Materials and Methods: Cone beam computed tomography scans of three groups consisting of 20 patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate, 20 patients affected by bilateral cleft lip and palate, and a control group of 20 subjects with normal occlusion were analyzed for this study. Condylar, ramal, and condylar plus ramal asymmetry indices were measured for all subjects using the method of Habets et al. Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests were used to determine any significant differences between the groups for all indices at the 95% level of confidence. Results: There were no significant differences regarding sex for all mandibular asymmetry indices in all three groups. All Asymmetry indices (condylar, ramal, and condylar plus ramal asymmetry) were significantly higher in the unilateral cleft group compared with the other two groups. Conclusion: Cone beam computed tomography images showed that patients with cleft lip and palate suffered from mandibular asymmetry. Subjects with unilateral cleft lip and palate had a more asymmetric mandible compared with the bilateral cleft lip and palate and control groups. Therefore, the mandible appears to be the leading factor in facial asymmetry in subjects with unilateral cleft lip and palate.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate condylar and ramal vertical asymmetry in adult orthodontic patients with different vertical growth patterns and a clinically normal sagittal skeletal pattern using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS The study sample consisted of 101 adult orthodontic patients (48 men and 53 women) divided into three groups according to their vertical growth patterns: high- (33 patients; mean age, 25.06 ± 6.05 years), low- (34 patients; mean age, 24.88 ± 5.22 years), and normal-angle (34 patients; mean age, 24.14 ± 4.26 years) groups. Condylar, ramal, condylar plus ramal height, and index measurements were performed using CBCT images and analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey tests. RESULTS There was no statistically significant difference in height measurements between right and left sides in each group, except a slight difference of approximately 0.5 mm for condylar height (CH) in the low-angle group (P < .05). No statistically significant gender differences were found for the values (P > .05). In the high-angle group, the ramal height (RH) and condylar plus ramal height (CH + RH) on both sides were found to be less than those of the low- (P < .001) and normal-angle groups (P < .017 and P > .017, respectively), and the asymmetry index values were slightly higher than those of the low- and normal-angle groups (P > .05). CONCLUSIONS The high-angle group showed statistically significantly smaller values of RH and CH + RH on both sides and statistically insignificantly higher asymmetry index values than the low- and normal-angle groups.

Abstract
Rapid maxillary expansion (RME) is an effective orthopedic procedure that can be used to address problems concerned with the growth of the midface. This procedure also may produce positive side effects on the general health of the patient. The aim of the present consensus paper was to identify and evaluate studies on the changes in airway dimensions and muscular function produced by RME in growing patients. A total of 331 references were retrieved from a database search (PubMed). The widening of the nasal cavity base after midpalatal suture opening in growing patients allows the reduction in nasal airway resistance with an improvement of the respiratory pattern. The effects of RME on the upper airway, however, have been described as limited and local, and these effects become diminished farther down the airway, possibly as a result of soft-tissue adaptation. Moreover, limited information is available about the long-term stability of the airway changes produced by RME. Several studies have shown that maxillary constriction may play a role in the etiology of more severe breathing disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in growing subjects. Early orthodontic treatment with RME is able to reduce the symptoms of OSA and improve polysomnographic variables. Finally, early orthopedic treatment with RME also is beneficial to avoid the development of facial skeletal asymmetry resulting from functional crossbites that otherwise may lead to functional and structural disorders of the stomatognathic system later in life.

Abstract
Objective This preliminary study aimed to propose a new analysis of digital panoramic
radiographs for a differential diagnosis between functional and morphological
mandibular asymmetry in children with and without unilateral posterior
crossbite. Methods Analysis is based on linear and angular measurements taken from nine anatomic
points, demarcated in sequence directly on digital images. A specific plug-in was
developed as part of a larger public domain image processing software (ImageJ) to
automate and facilitate measurements. Since panoramic radiographs are typically
subject to magnification differences between the right and left sides, horizontal
linear measurements were adjusted for greater accuracy in both sides by means of a
Distortion Factor (DF). In order to provide a preliminary assessment of proposed
analysis and the developed plug-in, radiographs of ten patients (5 with unilateral
posterior crossbite and 5 with normal occlusion) were analyzed. Results Considerable divergence was found between the right and left sides in the
measurements of mandibular length and position of condyles in patients with
unilateral posterior crossbite in comparison to individuals with normal
occlusion. Conclusion Although there are more effective and accurate diagnostic methods, panoramic
radiography is still widespread, especially in emerging countries. This study
presented initial evidence that the proposed analysis can be an important resource
for planning early orthodontic intervention and, thus, avoid progression of
asymmetries and their consequences.

Abstract
Bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy is considered a standard technique in mandibular orthognathic surgeries to reduce unexpected bilateral stress in the temporomandibular joints. Unilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomy (USSO) was recently introduced to correct facial asymmetry caused by asymmetric mandibular prognathism and has shown favorable outcomes. If unilateral surgery could guarantee long-term postoperative stability as well as favorable results, operation time and the incidence of postoperative complications could be reduced compared to those in bilateral surgery. This report highlights three consecutive cases with long-term follow-up in which USSO was used to correct asymmetric mandibular prognathism. Long-term postoperative changes in the condylar contour and ramus and condylar head length were analyzed using routine radiography and computed tomography. In addition, prior USSO studies were reviewed to outline clear criteria for applying this technique. In conclusion, patients showing functional-type asymmetry with predicted unilateral mandibular movement of less than 7 mm can be considered suitable candidates for USSO-based correction of asymmetric mandibular prognathism with or without maxillary arch surgeries.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to assess the influence of unilateral posterior crossbite on the electrical activity of the temporal and masseter muscles in patients with subjective symptoms of temporomandibular dysfunctions (TMD). The sample consisted of 50 patients (22 female and 28 male) aged 18.4 to 26.3 years (mean 20.84, SD 1.14) with subjective symptoms of TMD and unilateral posterior crossbite malocclusion and 100 patients without subjective symptoms of TMD and malocclusion (54 female and 46 male) aged between 18.4 and 28.7 years (mean 21.42, SD 1.06). The anamnestic interviews were conducted according to a three-point anamnestic index of temporomandibular dysfunction (Ai). Electromyographical (EMG) recordings were performed using a DAB-Bluetooth Instrument (Zebris Medical GmbH, Germany). Recordings were carried out in the mandibular rest position and during maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). Analysis of the results of the EMG recordings confirmed the influence of unilateral posterior crossbite on variations in spontaneous muscle activity in the mandibular rest position and maximum voluntary contraction. In addition, there was a significant increase in the Asymmetry Index (As) and Torque Coefficient (Tc), responsible for a laterodeviating effect on the mandible caused by unbalanced right and left masseter and temporal muscles.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION: This study aims to develop a method to assess the changes in palatal and lingual
cross-sectional areas in patients submitted to rapid maxillary expansion (RME).
METHODS: The sample comprised 31 Class I malocclusion individuals submitted to RME and
divided into two groups treated with Haas (17 patients) and Hyrax (14 patients)
expanders. Cone-beam computed tomography scans were acquired at T0
(before expansion ) and T1 (six months after screw stabilization).
Maxillary and mandibular cross-sectional areas were assessed at first permanent
molars and first premolars regions and compared at T0 and
T1. Mandibular occlusal area was also analyzed. RESULTS: Maxillary cross-sectional areas increased in 56.18 mm2 and 44.32
mm2 for the posterior and anterior regions. These values were
smaller for the mandible, representing augmentation of 40.32 mm2 and
39.91 mm2 for posterior and anterior sections. No differences were
found when comparing both expanders. Mandibular occlusal area increased
43.99mm2 and mandibular incisors proclined. Increments of 1.74 mm
and 1.7 mm occurred in mandibular intermolar and interpremolar distances. These
same distances presented increments of 5.5 mm and 5.57 mm for the maxillary arch.
CONCLUSION: Occlusal and cross-sectional areas increased significantly after RME. The method
described seems to be reliable and precise to assess intraoral area changes.

Abstract
Objective: The objective of the following study is to investigate the mandibular vertical asymmetry in a group of patients with early unilateral mandibular first molar extractions. Materials and Methods: Mandibular asymmetry index measurements (condylar, ramal and condylar-plus-ramal) were performed on the panoramic radiographs of a study group including 51 patients (mean age: 18.60 ± 1.11 years) and a control group of 51 patients (mean age: 18.53 ± 1.29 years). Group I included patients with a unilateral mandibular first molar extracted before the age of 12 years. Group II included patients with no extractions and had excellent Class I relationships, no missing teeth and slight or moderate anterior crowding. A paired t-test was used to determine possible statistically significant differences between the sides for the measurements. Student's t-test was used for the comparison of asymmetry index values between the groups and genders. Results: No group showed statistically significant sex-or side-specific differences for posterior vertical height measurements. Condylar asymmetry index and ramal asymmetry index measurements were not statistically different between the groups, while condylar-plus-ramal asymmetry index (CRAI) measurements were statistically different between the groups (P = 0.019). Conclusions: A slight difference for CRAI value was found in patients with early unilateral mandibular first molar extractions.

Abstract
Belief in and rejection of a relationship of occlusion and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) condyle-fossa position with normal and abnormal function are still contentious issues. Clinical opinions can be strong, but support in most published data (mostly univariate) is problematic. Distribution overlap, low sensitivity and specificity are a common basis to reject any useful prediction value. Notwithstanding, a relationship of form with function is a basic tenet of biology. These are multifactor problems, but the questions mostly have not been analysed as such. This review moves the question forward by focusing on TM joint anatomic organisation as the multifactor system it is expected to be in a closed system like a synovial joint. Multifactor analysis allows the data to speak for itself and reduces bias. Classification tree analysis revealed useful prediction values and usable clinical models which are illustrated, backed up by stepwise logistic regression. Explained variance, R(2), predicting normals from pooled TMJ patients was 32·6%, sensitivity 67·9%, specificity 85·7%; 37% versus disc displacement with reduction; and 28·8% versus disc displacement without reduction. Significant osseous organisational differences between TM joints with clicking and locking suggest that this is not necessarily a single disease continuum. However, a subset of joints with clicking contained characteristics of joints with locking that might contribute to symptom progression versus resistance. Moderately strong models confirm there is a relationship between TMJ osseous organisation and function, but it should not be overstated. More than one model of normals and of TM derangement organisation is revealed. The implications to clinical decision-making are discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The three-dimensional (3D) asymmetric structure of the mandible makes it necessary to analyze both its size and angle. Currently the developing 3D analysis techniques are not able to perform the simultaneous linear and angular measurements. Our aim was to evaluate mandibular asymmetry using a vector-based system by constructing 3D vectors for the mandibular functional units. MATERIAL AND METHODS We analyzed the 3D computed tomography images of normal control (N = 27) and asymmetric mandibles (N = 40). We created 3D vectors for the condylar, coronoid, body, gonial, and symphyseal functional units and compared the corresponding pairs of 3D vectors by calculating vector operations. RESULTS The vector difference and other vector components represented the individual 3D architectural pattern and severity of the asymmetric mandible. The body unit contributed most to mandibular asymmetry followed by the condylar unit. CONCLUSIONS The results indicate that 3D vector analysis can improve our understanding of the 3D architecture of asymmetric mandibles. This type of 3D vector analysis can be a useful tool for the comprehensive evaluation of its asymmetric mandibular structure.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aims to investigate the mandibular vertical asymmetry in a group of adult patients who had early bilateral mandibular first molar extractions. METHODS Mandibular asymmetry index measurements (condylar, ramal, and condylar plus ramal) were made on the panoramic radiographs of a study group including 30 subjects (mean age, 18.22 ± 1.30 years) and a control group of 25 subjects (mean age, 18.24 ± 1.17 years). Group I comprised the control group patients with no extractions and had excellent class I relationships, no missing teeth, and slight or moderate anterior crowding. Group II included patients with a bilateral mandibular first molar teeth extracted before the age of 12 years. Student's t test was used for the comparison of asymmetry index values between the groups. A paired t test was used to determine possible statistically significant differences between the sides for condylar, ramal, and condylar plus ramal height measurements. RESULTS No group showed statistically significant side-specific differences for posterior vertical height measurements. Condylar asymmetry index (CAI), ramal asymmetry index, and condylar plus ramal asymmetry index measurements were not statistically different between the groups (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS CAI values were significantly high when compared with the 3 % threshold value in the both groups, but comparisons between the groups were not statistically significant. CLINICAL RELEVANCE This article investigates the effects of early bilateral mandibular molar teeth extraction that has never been investigated in the literature. The present study showed that the lengths of the condylar, ramal, and condylar plus ramal height were less in the study group than in a well-matched control group of without extraction.
