Abstract
PURPOSE Ferula gummosa Boiss. is a well-known and valuable medicinal plant in Iran. Research has shown that this plant has several pharmacological properties, including anti-bacterial, anti-cancer and etc. In the present study, we investigated the cytotoxic properties of F. gummosa Boiss. extract in MCF-7 breast adenocarcinoma cells. METHODS The cytotoxicity and pro-apoptotic properties of the extract were assessed by 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) test and propidium iodide (PI) stained cells, respectively. Apoptosis and necrosis were evaluated by annexin V-PI staining. The levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS),malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) was determined to evaluate oxidative stress. The cell migration and the gene expression were assessed by scratch assay and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (q-RT-PCR), respectively. RESULTS The extract of F. gummosa decreased the viability and cell cycle progression of MCF-7 cells by inducing apoptosis and necrosis, increasing ROS and MDA levels, and decreasing GSH levels and SOD activity. It also lowered the cells' migration capability by enhancing p53 mRNA levels and reducing MMP-9 mRNA expression. CONCLUSION F. gummosa exhibited pro-apoptotic, anti-proliferative, and anti-metastatic effects on MCF-7 cells. It is therefore recommended that detailed future research be done on different parts of the plant or its secondary metabolites to find anti-cancer lead compounds.

Abstract
Preeclampsia is the most common and serious complication of pregnancy. Variants of Sirtuin-1 (SIRT1) as a key player in the regulation of oxidant/antioxidant signaling pathways might be involved in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia. In the present case-control study 300 women with and without preeclampsia were studied for SIRT1 variants (rs7895833, rs7069102, and rs2273773) and haplotypes. Also, the relationship of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and Zn, Cu, and Se levels to the polymorphisms were investigated. The SIRT1 rs7895833 A > G, rs7069102 C > G, and the rs2273773 C > T polymorphisms were associated with the risk of preeclampsia. We found the haplotypes G (rs7895833) C (rs7069102) C (rs2273773), GCC, and ACC compared to the AGT decreased the risk of preeclampsia. The risk haplotype of AGT was associated with higher GPx activity compared to the GCC haplotype. A significantly higher level of Cu and lower levels of Zn and Se in patients with preeclampsia compared to controls were detected. Also, a significantly lower SOD and higher GPx activity in preeclamptic patients compared to controls were found. The three risk genotypes of AA (rs7895833), GG (rs7069102), and TT (rs2273773) significantly decreased the Zn level and SOD activity, and the TT genotype (rs2273773) increased the Cu level in all studied women. The presence of rs7069102 polymorphism was associated with enhanced systolic blood pressure. For the first time, we indicated three SIRT1 polymorphisms and the AGT haplotype are risk factors for preeclampsia development. Also, SIRT1 variants and haplotypes affect the levels of antioxidant enzymes and their cofactors, complicating the pregnancy outcome.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Changes that occur during pregnancy and after that during breastfeeding induce some symptoms similar to metabolic syndrome (MetS) risk factors. This study aims to determine the relationship between pregnancy, as well as the duration of breastfeeding and MetS controlling the effect of other risk factors like hypertension, glucose intolerance, triglyceride, central obesity, and reduction of high-density lipoprotein in women of Fasa Persian Cohort Study. MATERIALS AND METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 5015 women aged 35-70 years were investigated in the Sheshdeh region from 2016 to 2021, and the information related to the disease symptoms was collected through questionnaires, examinations, and laboratory tests. MetS was calculated based on two guidelines according to adult treatment panel III (ATP III) and international diabetes federation (IDF) methods. For reporting the data, the odds ratio with its 95% confidence interval was used. In order to eliminate the effect of confounders, logistic regression was used. RESULTS Prevalence of MetS showed a descending trend in women with up to two pregnancies and it reached 22.6% and 22.4% using ATPIII and IDF methods respectively, while with an increase in the number of pregnancies of more than two, MetS prevalence was ascending. The prevalence of MetS did not have any specific trend across various breastfeeding duration groups. Multivariate analysis approved that the odds ratio of developing MetS in comparison with women who had two pregnancies was significantly increasing trend when the pregnancy counts increased. CONCLUSION The chance of developing MetS based on both IDF and ATP III methods after adjustment for confounding effects would grow with an increase in the number of pregnancies to more than two and breast-feeding of more than seven years. It is recommended that women with more than two pregnancies or the long duration of breast-feeding women undergo a specialized examination to investigate and control MetS problems so that future diseases could be prevented.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to identify the optimal cutoff values of each component of metabolic syndrome (MetS) in the first trimester of pregnancy for predicting adverse pregnancy outcomes. METHODS A total of 1076 pregnant women in the first trimester of gestation were recruited in this prospective longitudinal cohort study. Specifically, 993 pregnant women at 11-13 weeks of gestation who were followed up until the end of pregnancy were included in the final analysis. The cutoff values of each component of MetS in the occurrence of adverse pregnancy outcomes including gestational diabetes (GDM), gestational hypertensive disorders, and preterm birth were obtained via receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis using the Youden's index. RESULTS Among the 993 pregnant women studied, the significant associations between the first trimester MetS components and adverse pregnancy outcomes were as follows: triglyceride (TG) and body mass index (BMI) with preterm birth; mean arterial pressure (MAP), TG, and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) with gestational hypertensive disorders; BMI, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), and TG with GDM (all p values < 0.05). The cutoff point values for the above-mentioned MetS components were: TG > 138 mg/dl and BMI < 21 kg/m2 for the occurrence of preterm birth; TG > 148 mg/dL, MAP > 84, and HDL-C < 84 mg/dl for gestational hypertensive disorders; BMI > 25 kg/m2, FPG > 84 mg/dl, and TG > 161 mg/dl for GDM. CONCLUSION The study findings imply the importance of early management of metabolic syndrome in pregnancy to improve maternal-fetal outcomes.

Abstract
Background Preeclampsia (PE) is a multi-organ syndrome that onsets in the second half of pregnancy. It is the second leading cause of maternal death globally. The homeostasis of zinc (Zn) levels is important for feto-maternal health. Objective We aimed to collect all studies available to synthesize the evidence regarding the association between maternal Zn levels and the risk of preeclampsia. Methods A systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted via searching seven electronic databases [PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, African Journals Online (AJOL), ClinicalTrial.gov, and two Chinese databases: Wanfang and Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, CNKI]. Studies reporting maternal serum Zn levels in pregnant women with or without preeclampsia were included. Eligible studies were assessed through Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) and the meta-analysis was performed via RevMan and Stata. The random-effects method (REM) was used for the meta-analysis with 95% confidence interval (CI). The pooled result was assessed using standard mean difference (SMD). The heterogeneity test was carried out using I 2 statistics, and the publication bias was evaluated using Begg's and Egger's test. Meta-regression and sensitivity analysis was performed via Stata software. Results A total of 51 studies were included in the final analysis. 6,947 participants from 23 countries were involved in our study. All studies went through the quality assessment. The pooled results showed that maternal serum Zn levels were lower in preeclamptic women than in healthy pregnant women (SMD: -1.00, 95% CI: -1.29, -0.70). Sub-group analysis revealed that geographical, economic context, and disease severity may further influence serum Zn levels and preeclampsia. Limitations There are significant between-study heterogeneity and publication bias among included studies. Conclusions A lower level of maternal Zn was associated with increased risks of preeclampsia. The associations were not entirely consistent across countries and regions worldwide. Abstract
BACKGROUND Preeclampsia is the main cause of maternal and perinatal death. Multiple studies suggest that trace elements were associated with preeclampsia, but the results varied, and less known about early or mid-term pregnancy of trace elements and preeclampsia. We aim to explore the association between mid-term pregnancy trace elements levels and preeclampsia. METHODS The retrospective cohort study was consecutively conducted in Foshan Fosun Chancheng Hospital, Guangdong Province, China, from August 1, 2019, to November 30, 2019. Trace elements are derived from the laboratory data system, measured in maternal whole blood during 12-27 (+6) weeks of pregnancy by flame atomic absorption spectrometer method. Preeclampsia diagnosis and covariance were ascertained from the electronic medical records system. We used multivariable logical regression to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% CIs. RESULTS A total of 2186 participants were included in this study, and 59 (2.70%) women developed preeclampsia. After multivariable adjustment, the OR of Mg levels for preeclampsia was 0.35 (95%CI:0.06,2.20). The fifth quintiles of Mg were associated with 0.29 (95% CI:0.10,0.85) times lower risk of preeclampsia compared with the first quintile, with a dose-response trend (P for trend = 0.056). Per 1 µmol/L increment in Cu was associated with 11% lower risk of preeclampsia (OR=0.89; 95% CI, 0.78,1.02). Compared with the first quintile, the second, third,fourth,fifth quintile of Cu was associated with a odd ratio of 0.12 (95% CI:0.03,0.43),0.67 (95% CI:0.30,1.48),0.33 (95% CI:0.15,0.76) and 0.26 (95% CI:0.10,0.66),respectively. Null associations were observed for Zn, Fe, Ca. CONCLUSIONS Higher blood Mg and Cu levels in mid-term pregnancy were associated with lower preeclampsia risk.

Abstract
Background Preeclampsia is a multifactorial cardiovascular disorder of pregnancy. If left untreated, it can lead to severe maternal and fetal outcomes. Hence, timely diagnosis and management of preeclampsia are extremely important. Biomarkers of oxidative stress are associated with the pathogenesis of preeclampsia and therefore could be indicative of evolving preeclampsia and utilized for timely diagnosis. In this study, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the most reliable oxidative stress biomarkers in preeclampsia, based on their diagnostic sensitivities and specificities as well as their positive and negative predictive values. Methods A systematic search using PubMed, ScienceDirect, ResearchGate, and PLOS databases (1900 to March 2021) identified nine relevant studies including a total of 343 women with preeclampsia and 354 normotensive controls. Results Ischemia-modified albumin (IMA), uric acid (UA), and malondialdehyde (MDA) were associated with 3.38 (95% CI 2.23, 4.53), 3.05 (95% CI 2.39, 3.71), and 2.37 (95% CI 1.03, 3.70) odds ratios for preeclampsia diagnosis, respectively. The IMA showed the most promising diagnostic potential with the positive predictive ratio (PPV) of 0.852 (95% CI 0.728, 0.929) and negative predictive ratio (NPV) of 0.811 (95% CI 0.683, 0.890) for preeclampsia. Minor between-study heterogeneity was reported for these biomarkers (Higgins’ I2 = 0–15.879%). Conclusions This systematic review and meta-analysis identified IMA, UA, and MDA as the most promising oxidative stress biomarkers associated with established preeclampsia. IMA as a biomarker of tissue damage exhibited the best diagnostic test accuracy. Thus, these oxidative stress biomarkers should be further explored in larger cohorts for preeclampsia diagnosis. Abstract
Preeclampsia is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality-morbidity, and environmental factors act as the main driving force for the development of disease in genetically lean women. Trace element levels (zinc, copper) and thiol state (total, native thiol) may affect involved risk factors and play a role in the pathogenesis. The objective of our study is to assess trace element and thiol levels in patient and control groups. A total number of 88 pregnant women (in their third trimester) included 43 preeclampsia patients and 45 normotensive pregnant women as controls. The main findings of this study were the significantly elevated copper levels and decreased thiol levels (native and total thiols) in the patient group compared to controls (p < 0.05). Disulfide levels were not statistically different between the groups (p > 0.05). In patients, the predictive cutoff value of copper was 224 μg/dL and was 1.19 for the copper/native thiol ratio. Zinc levels were not statistically different between the two groups. Correlation analysis revealed no relationship between zinc-copper and zinc-total thiol levels in patients, while a positive correlation was evident in controls (zinc-copper, p < 0.05, r = 0.425, and zinc-total thiol levels, p < 0.05, r = 0.642). Patients had marginally high ALT and AST values in the normal range, and a significant difference was found between the two groups (p < 0.05). According to these results, elevated copper levels and decreased thiol levels may have a value for early prediction. The mechanisms that may be responsible for the altered element and thiol status have been discussed here in the context of oxidative stress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Garcinia mangostana, commonly also called mangosteen, is an evergreen tropical tree, and its pericarps have been used in traditional herbal medicine for different diseases. The anticancer efficacy of the ethanolic extract from pericarps of Garcinia mangostana was investigated in human prostate cancer cells (PC3), melanoma cells (B16F10), breast cancer cells (MCF7) and glioblastoma (U87) cell lines. METHODS 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay was used to measure cell viability. propidium iodide (PI) staining and analysis on a flow cytometer was used to identify apoptosis. Action on cell migration was evaluated by scratch assay and gelatin zymography. Furthermore, the level of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), malondialdehyde (MDA), glutathione (GSH), and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was measured. Moreover, we investigated the synergistic efficacy with several combinations of Garcinia mangostana extract (GME) with doxorubicin. RESULTS GME reduced cell viability in malignant cell dose and time-dependently. GME-induced sub-G1 peak in flow cytometry histogram of treated cells control representing apoptotic cell death is involved in GME toxicity. Furthermore, GME exhibited inhibitory effects on the migration ability of U87 cells, which was accompanied by inhibition in the activity and expression of MMP2 (matrix metalloproteinase-2). Besides, GSH level and SOD activity was significantly reduced while there was an increase in ROS and MDA concentration following 24 hr GME treatment. Moreover, combination of GME (1.5-25μg/mL) with Dox (6 µg/mL) displayed synergistic efficacy and cell growth inhibition. CONCLUSION In conclusion, GME could cause cell death in PC3, MCF7, U87, and B16F10 cell lines, in which apoptosis plays an imperative role. Plant extract decreased the migration ability of the cells by inhibiting the activity and expression of Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs). G. mangostana could be a promising therapeutic strategy to treat cancer in the future.

Abstract
A normal pregnancy is essential to establishing a healthy start to life. Complications during have been associated with adverse perinatal outcomes and lifelong health problems. The ability to identify risk factors associated with pregnancy complications early in gestation is vitally important for preventing negative foetal outcomes. Maternal nutrition has been long considered vital to a healthy pregnancy, with micronutrients and trace elements heavily implicated in maternofoetal metabolism. This study proposed the use of elemental metabolomics to study multiple elements at 18 weeks gestation from blood plasma and urine to construct models that could predict outcomes such as small for gestational age (SGA) (n = 10), low placental weight (n = 18), and preterm birth (n = 13) from control samples (n = 87). Samples collected from the Lyell McEwin Hospital in Adelaide, South Australia, were measured for 27 plasma elements and 37 urine elements by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Exploratory analysis indicated an average selenium concentration 20 μg/L lower than established reference ranges across all groups, low zinc in preterm (0.64 μg/L, reference range 0.66-1.10 μg/L), and higher iodine in preterm and SGA gestations (preterm 102 μg/L, SGA 111 μg/L, reference range 40-92 μg/L). Using random forest algorithms with receiver operating characteristic curves, low placental weight was predicted with 86.7% accuracy using plasma, 78.6% prediction for SGA with urine, and 73.5% determination of preterm pregnancies. This study indicates that elemental metabolomic modelling could provide a means of early detection of at-risk pregnancies allowing for more targeted monitoring of mothers, with potential for early intervention strategies to be developed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between maternal and cord blood zinc level and pregnancy outcomes remains uncertain. The present study aims to assess whether maternal blood zinc level represents cord blood zinc level correctly. METHODS In this meta-analysis, systematic search was performed in PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases for relevant available English articles which included mean and standard deviation values of cord blood zinc level up to April 2019. For the assessment of the relation between cord blood zinc level and pregnancy outcomes, the pooled standard mean difference with 95% confidence interval (CI) was used and 23 studies were analyzed. RESULTS Cumulative analysis showed that cord blood zinc level was found significantly decreased in pregnancies with complications compared with healthy pregnancy controls [REM: P = 0.0007, mean difference - 7.9 (- 12.48, - 3.31)]. For further analysis, maternal serum zinc level status was determined from same studies to compare with cord blood levels and subgroups were detected as "Preterm", "Preeclampsia", "Small for gestational age/Intrauterine growth restriction and Low birth weight". It was observed that cord blood zinc levels in subgroup analysis were also decreased and/or tend to be decreased compared to healthy pregnancies, except for preeclampsia subgroup. Also, a correlation was seen between cord blood and maternal blood zinc level status (R = 0.4365, 95% CI - 0.530, 0.756; P = 0.0351). CONCLUSION It was thought that cord blood zinc level might tend to decrease more than maternal serum zinc level in the pathological conditions during pregnancies.

Abstract
Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-specific syndrome that has been the greatest cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. The impaired outcomes are related to maternal and the offspring healthy in the short and long-term. Although preeclampsia origins remain unclear, it is well known that there is impaired trophoblast invasion with culminant abnormal immune response. The early and late-onset preeclampsia have been studied, the subtypes have the same difference in the placentation and inflammatory features. Dietary compounds can stimulate or inhibit the activation of immune cells. Low vitamin D intake has been linked to impaired fetal development, intrauterine growth restriction, and preeclampsia. Vitamin D has been described as an anti-inflammatory effect. It can downregulate pro-inflammatory cytokines expression by the inhibition of the Nuclear Factor-ĸB pathway signaling cascade. High vitamin D levels could attenuate the immune response. On the other hand, vitamin D deficiency may contribute to increasing pro-inflammatory state. In preeclampsia, there is a reduced expression of vitamin D receptor and its metabolism is disrupted. In this review, we aimed to discuss the role of vitamin D as an anti-inflammatory agent in relation to the pro-inflammatory process of preeclampsia through the activation of the TLR4 pathway. Although there are limited studies showing the relation between vitamin D and lower risk of preeclampsia, the maternal status of vitamin D seems to influence the risk of PE development. Therefore, vitamin D supplementation in women may be a strategy to improve pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract
Copper (Cu) is an essential micronutrient for both pathogens and the hosts during viral infection. Cu is involved in the functions of critical immune cells such as T helper cells, B cells, neutrophils natural killer (NK) cells, and macrophages. These blood cells are involved in the killing of infectious microbes, in cell-mediated immunity and the production of specific antibodies against the pathogens. Cu-deficient humans show an exceptional susceptibility to infections due to the decreased number and function of these blood cells. Besides, Cu can kill several infectious viruses such as bronchitis virus, poliovirus, human immunodeficiency virus type 1(HIV-1), other enveloped or nonenveloped, single- or double-stranded DNA and RNA viruses. Moreover, Cu has the potent capacity of contact killing of several viruses, including SARS‐CoV‐2. Since the current outbreak of the COVID-19 continues to develop, and there is no vaccine or drugs are currently available, the critical option is now to make the immune system competent to fight against the SARS‐CoV‐2. Based on available data, we hypothesize that enrichment of plasma copper levels will boost both the innate and adaptive immunity in people. Moreover, owing to its potent antiviral activities, Cu may also act as a preventive and therapeutic regime against COVID-19.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Data on the elemental status, redistribution of the elements, role of occupational exposure and dietary assessment in preeclampsia (PE) are scarce. There are many disparities in the findings of essential and non-essential elements' role in PE. In this article we overview the changes in the content of selected elements in pregnancy complicated with the disorder of complex and not fully understood etiology. We have focused on important limitations and highlighted shortcomings in research from the last ten years period. METHODS The Scopus and PubMed electronic databases have been searched for English-language articles published within the time interval 2008-2018, with full text available and with the key words "preeclampsia" and "chemical element" (i.e. separately: Cd, Pb, As, Ni, Mo, Co, Cr, Mn, Se, I, Fe, Sr, Cu, Zn, Mg, K and Na) appearing in the title, abstract or keywords. RESULTS A total of 48 publications were eligible for this overview. Surprisingly only 4% of papers considered environmental exposure, 8%- diet and 2 %- comorbid diseases. In most published papers, occupational exposure was neglected. Meta-analysis was possible for seven elements in serum (Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Se, Zn), and two elements (Se, Zn) in plasma. It showed negative shift for most elements, however only several were statistically significant. CONLUSIONS The overview of the published data on PE and chemical elements yields varied results. Some of the reasons may be the difference in not duly validated method of determination, and huge discrepancies in study designs. The lack of detailed description of studied and control population and small number of samples constitute the most common limitations of such studies. Many of them describe the use of a single analytical procedure, therefore the quality of research may be insufficient to obtain reliable results. A history of elements' status and intake before and during pregnancy is usually not examined. Dietary assessment should be done at different stages of pregnancy, and whenever possible in the periconceptional period as well. It still needs to be established whether the deficiency of certain elements or their excess may be an etiopathogenic factor and a developmental cause of PE, and if it may serve as a target of actions in the causal treatment or even prevention of the occurrence of this disease.

Abstract
KEY POINTS Inappropriate intake of key micronutrients in pregnancy is known to alter maternal endocrine status, impair placental development and induce fetal growth restriction. Selenium is an essential micronutrient required for the function of approximately 25 important proteins. However, the specific effects of selenium deficiency during pregnancy on maternal, placental and fetal outcomes are poorly understood. The present study demonstrates that maternal selenium deficiency increases maternal triiodothyronine and tetraiodothyronine concentrations, reduces fetal blood glucose concentrations, and induces fetal growth restriction. Placental expression of key selenium-dependent thyroid hormone converting enzymes were reduced, whereas the expression of key placental nutrient transporters was dysregulated. Selenium deficiency had minimal impact on selenium-dependent anti-oxidants but increased placental copper concentrations and expression of superoxide dismutase 1. These results highlight the idea that selenium deficiency during pregnancy may contribute to thyroid dysfunction, causing reduced fetal growth, that may precede programmed disease outcomes in offspring. ABSTRACT Selenium is a trace element fundamental to diverse homeostatic processes, including anti-oxidant regulation and thyroid hormone metabolism. Selenium deficiency in pregnancy is common and increases the risk of pregnancy complications including fetal growth restriction. Although altered placental formation may contribute to these poor outcomes, the mechanism by which selenium deficiency contributes to complications in pregnancy is poorly understood. Female C57BL/6 mice were randomly allocated to control (>190 µg kg-1 , n = 8) or low selenium (<50 µg kg-1 , n = 8) diets 4 weeks prior to mating and throughout gestation. Pregnant mice were killed at embryonic day 18.5 followed by collection of maternal and fetal tissue. Maternal and fetal plasma thyroid hormone concentrations were analysed, as was placental expression of key selenoproteins involved in thyroid metabolism and anti-oxidant defences. Selenium deficiency increased plasma tetraiodothyronine and triiodothyronine concentrations. This was associated with a reduction in placental expression of key selenodependent deiodinases, DIO2 and DIO3. Placental expression of selenium-dependent anti-oxidants was unaffected by selenium deficiency. Selenium deficiency reduced fetal glucose concentrations, leading to reduced fetal weight. Placental glycogen content was increased within the placenta, as was Slc2a3 mRNA expression. This is the first study to demonstrate that selenium deficiency may reduce fetal weight through increased maternal thyroid hormone concentrations, impaired placental thyroid hormone metabolism and dysregulated placental nutrient transporter expression. The study suggests that the magnitude of selenium deficiency commonly reported in pregnant women may be sufficient to impair thyroid metabolism but not placental anti-oxidant concentrations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/AIMS Placental syndromes (PS) refer to pregnancy complications that include gestational hypertension, (pre)eclampsia, HELLP syndrome, and/or placental insufficiency-induced fetal growth restriction. These disorders are characterized by increased oxidative stress. This study aims to test the hypothesis that the abnormal hemodynamic adaptation to pregnancy, typical for early PS pregnancy, is accompanied by abnormal maternal levels of antioxidants relative to those in normal pregnancy. METHODS Before, and at 12, 16, and 20 weeks pregnancy, we measured trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC), uric acid (UA), and TEACC (TEAC corrected for UA) in maternal serum of former PS patients, who either developed recurrent PS (rPS; n = 16) or had a normal next pregnancy (non-rPS; n = 23). Concomitantly, we also measured various hemodynamic variables. RESULTS rPS differed from non-rPS by higher TEACC levels before pregnancy (178 vs. 152 µM; p = 0.02) and at 20 weeks pregnancy (180 vs. 160 µM; p = 0.04). Only non-rPS responded to pregnancy by significant rises in hemodynamic measures. CONCLUSION These data indicate that rPS pregnancies are preceded by an increase in antioxidant capacity, presumably induced by subclinical vascular injury and low-grade chronic inflammation.

Abstract
High levels of atherogenic lipids in pregnancy are associated with health complications for the mother, the fetus and the newborn. As endocrine secretory tissue, the human placenta releases apolipoproteins (apos), particularly apoA1 and apoE. However, the magnitude and the directionality of the apo secretions remain unknown. We aimed to 1) determine the amount and orientation (apical-maternal versus basal-fetal) of placentally secreted apoA1 and apoE using human perfused placenta and primary trophoblast cell (PTC) culture, 2) compare apoA1 and apoE secretions of PTC with that of hepatocytes and 3) associate the obtained results with human blood levels by determining apoA1 and apoE concentrations in maternal and fetal serum samples. In perfused placenta and serum samples, apoA1 and apoE concentrations were significantly higher at the maternal compared to the fetal side. For apoE a similar trend was found in PTC. For apoA1, the secretion to the apical side declined over time while release to the basal side was stable resulting in significantly different apoA1 concentrations between both sides. Unexpectedly, PTC secreted significantly higher amounts of apoA1 and apoE compared to hepatocytes. Our data indicate that the placenta may play an important role in maternal and fetal cholesterol homeostasis via secretion of anti-atherogenic apos.

Abstract
During the early life, the diet of infants is mainly dominated by milk. Milk is a natural food rich in trace elements focus on essential elements. These elements are very necessary for human metabolism and since they cannot be synthesized by the body, the only source available for the humans to obtain them is by ingestion of natural food. This mini-review aims at updating the knowledge on trace elements, outlining their natural food sources, and their possible implications in common clinical disorders in early and adult life. However, it was found that consumption of food with micronutrients and trace elements may release intracellular compounds and offer oxidative protection or exacerbate oxidative damage to metabolically compromised cells.

Abstract
Interpretation of laboratory investigations relies on reference intervals. Physiological changes in pregnancy may result in significant changes in normal values for many biochemical assays, and as such results may be misinterpreted as abnormal or mask a pathological state. The aims of this review are as follows: 1. To review the major physiological changes in biochemical tests in normal pregnancy. 2. To outline where these physiological changes are important in interpreting laboratory investigations in pregnancy. 3. To document the most common causes of abnormalities in biochemical tests in pregnancy, as well as important pregnancy-specific causes.

Abstract
Preeclampsia is a multifactorial disorder defined by hypertension and increased urinary protein excretion during pregnancy. It is a significant cause of maternal and neonatal deaths worldwide. Despite various research efforts to clarify pathogenies of preeclampsia and predict this disease before beginning of symptoms, the pathogenesis of preeclampsia is unclear. Early prediction and diagnosis of women at risk of preeclampsia has not markedly improved. Therefore, the objective of this study was to perform a review on metabolomic articles assessing predictive and diagnostic biomarkers of preeclampsia. Four electronic databases including PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, Sciencedirect, and Scopus were searched to identify studies of preeclampsia in humans using metabolomics from inception to March 2018. Twenty-one articles in a variety of biological specimens and analytical platforms were included in the present review. Metabolite profiles may assist in the diagnosis of preeclampsia and discrimination of its subtypes. Lipids and their related metabolites were the most generally detected metabolites. Although metabolomic biomarkers of preeclampsia are not routinely used, this review suggests that metabolomics has the potential to be developed into a clinical tool for preeclampsia diagnosis and could contribute to an improved understanding of disease mechanisms. Abstract
Poor nutrition during pregnancy is known to impair foetal development and increase the risk of chronic disease in offspring. Both macronutrients and micronutrients are required for a healthy pregnancy although significantly less is understood about the role of micronutrients in the programming of chronic disease. This is despite the fact that modern calorie rich diets are often also deficient in key micronutrients. The importance of micronutrients in gestational disorders is clearly understood but how they impact long term disease in humans requires further investigation. In contrast, animal studies have demonstrated how diets high or low in specific micronutrients influence offspring physiology. Many of these studies highlight the importance of the placenta in determining disease risk. This review will explore the effects of individual vitamins, minerals and trace elements on offspring disease outcomes and discuss several key placental adaptations that are affected by multiple micronutrients. These placental adaptations include micronutrient induced dysregulation of oxidative stress, altered methyl donor availability and its impact on epigenetic mechanisms as well as endocrine dysfunction. Critical gaps in our current knowledge and the relative importance of different micronutrients at different gestational ages will also be highlighted. Finally, this review will discuss the need for further studies to characterise the micronutrient status of Australian women of reproductive age and correlate micronutrient status to placental adaptations, pregnancy complications and offspring disease.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Although not fully understood, the physiopathology of preeclampsia is thought to involve an abnormal placentation, diffuse endothelial cell dysfunction and increased systemic inflammation. As micronutrients play a key role in placental endothelial function, oxidative stress and expression of angiogenic factors, periconceptional micronutrient supplementation has been proposed to reduce the risk of preeclampsia. However, recent studies reported conflicting results. RECENT FINDINGS Calcium intake (>1 g/day) may reduce the risk of preeclampsia in women with low-calcium diet. Data from recently updated Cochrane reviews did not support routine supplementation of vitamins C, E or D for either the prevention or treatment of preeclampsia. Evidences are also poor to support zinc or folic acid supplementation for preeclampsia prevention. Dark chocolate, flavonoid-rich food, and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids might also be candidates for prevention of preeclampsia. SUMMARY Through antioxidant, anti-inflammatory or vasoactive proprieties, micronutrients are good candidates for preeclampsia prevention. Calcium supplementation is recommended to prevent preeclampsia in women with low-calcium intake. Despite positive clinical and in-vitro data, strong evidence to support periconceptional supplementation of other micronutrients for preeclampsia risk-reduction is still lacking. Further studies are also needed to evaluate the benefit of nutritional supplementation such as chocolate and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Abstract
Maternal fatty acid and lipid metabolism undergoes changes during pregnancy to facilitate fetal growth and development. Different types of fatty acids have different roles in maintaining a successful pregnancy and they are incorporated into different forms of lipids for the purpose of storage and transport. This chapter aims to provide an understanding of the distribution and metabolism of fatty acids and lipids in the maternal, placental, and fetal compartments. We further describe how this distribution is altered in maternal obesity, preterm birth, and pregnancy complications such as gestational diabetes mellitus, preeclampsia, and intrauterine growth restriction.
