Abstract
INTRODUCTION Telesurgery allows the procedures to be carried out over long distances, however due to lack of data, its feasibility has not been consolidated yet. Since it is a promising modality, it is important to illustrate the current scenario on this subject. OBJECTIVE To review the literature aiming at the surgical success rate as a primary objective, and secondly, the most important patient outcomes and the network system. MATERIALS AND METHODS In June 2024, we followed PRISMA guidelines to research trials on urological robotic surgery in humans. We used as exclusion criteria: editorials, specialist's opinions, tele-mentoring, tele-training, small procedures, non-remote surgeries, absence of interest outcomes, telesurgeries in non-humans or in cadaver. RESULTS Five hundred and ninety eight studies were identified with peer review and a third reviewer for divergencies, both directed by previously established inclusion and exclusion criteria, selecting 6 studies after the exclusions. We found 54 patients who underwent urological telesurgeries; all of them were accomplished with no complications or need for conversion to open surgery. Almost all the procedures were carried out in China (98.14%) and the most used robotic model was MicroHand S (83.33%). Nephrectomy was the procedure of choice (57%). Mean surgical time was 66.2 (IQR) 56.6 minutes. Intraoperative bleeding time was 68.6 ± 76.7 milliliters. Hospital stay was 5.5 (IQR) 5 days. The distance between main surgeon and the patient was between 2,581.5 (IQR) 2,871 kilometers. 5G network was used the most (98.14%). The total network latency time was 176 (IQR) 10.9 milliseconds. CONCLUSION Despite its limitations, there was evidence demonstrating that robotic surgery in the genitourinary system is safe and feasible, however it is a subject that must be well discussed, and further studies must be carried out.

Abstract
Advancements in assistive robots have significantly transformed healthcare procedures in recent years. Clinical continuum robots have enhanced minimally invasive surgeries, offering benefits to patients such as reduced blood loss and a short recovery time. However, controlling these devices is difficult due to their limited accuracy in three-dimensional deflections and challenging localization, particularly in confined spaces like human internal organs. Consequently, there has been growing research interest in employing miniaturized soft growing robots, a promising alternative that provides enhanced flexibility and maneuverability. In this work, we extensively investigated issues concerning their designs and interactions with humans in clinical contexts. We took insights from the open challenges of the generic soft growing robots to examine implications for miniaturization, actuation, and biocompatibility. We proposed technological concepts and provided detailed discussions on leveraging existing technologies, such as smart sensors, haptic feedback, and artificial intelligence, to ensure the safe and efficient deployment of the robots. Finally, we offer an array of opinions from a biomedical engineering perspective that contributes to advancing research in this domain for future research to transition from conceptualization to practical clinical application of miniature soft growing robots.

Abstract
Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a formidable global health challenge, ranking among the most prevalent malignancies and a principal contributor to cancer-associated mortality. While traditional open surgery has historically been the cornerstone of CRC treatment, the advent of minimally invasive techniques, particularly robotic-assisted colorectal surgery (RACS), has garnered significant momentum owing to technological advancements in the field. Robotic platforms, exemplified by the da Vinci Surgical System, offer superior three-dimensional visualization, enhanced dexterity, and heightened precision, yielding improved perioperative outcomes, particularly in anatomically intricate regions such as the pelvis. This review provides a critical appraisal of the current landscape of RACS, emphasizing its superiority over conventional open and laparoscopic approaches. The increased control and precision afforded by robotic surgery have been shown to optimize outcomes in complex procedures such as total mesorectal excision, with evidence indicating reduced intraoperative blood loss, shortened hospital stays, and improved functional recovery. Nonetheless, challenges persist, including absence of haptic feedback, prohibitive costs, and steep learning curve associated with robotic systems. Despite these limitations, RACS has demonstrated considerable promise in sphincter-preserving and function-preserving procedures, ultimately enhancing postoperative quality of life. Beyond the surgical field, this review also investigates the integration of robotic surgery within multidisciplinary treatment strategies for CRC, particularly in the context of locally advanced rectal cancer. The combination of robotic techniques with total neoadjuvant therapy and immunotherapy-especially in tumors characterized by mismatch repair deficiency or high microsatellite instability has shown notable clinical efficacy. Furthermore, emerging personalized therapeutic approaches, including immunotherapies and targeted chemotherapeutic agents, emphasize the transformative potential of RACS in delivering superior oncologic outcomes. Looking towards the future, innovations in robotic platforms, including intraoperative imaging, artificial intelligence, and augmented reality, herald new possibilities for further enhancing the precision and efficacy of colorectal surgeries. The standardization of RACS protocols, alongside ongoing training and robust clinical research, will be critical to fully realizing the benefits of these advancements across diverse clinical settings. By incorporating cutting-edge technologies and personalized treatment methods, robotic-assisted surgery is prepared to become a cornerstone in future of CRC management, with the potential to significantly improve both survival outcomes and patient quality of life.

Abstract
Surgical care has advanced with the introduction of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) techniques, which have resulted in a reduced length of hospital stay and improved patient outcomes with regard to morbidity, mortality, and aesthetics. Implementation in Africa remains limited due to economic, infrastructural, and training-related issues. Our previous reviews show that adoption of MIS in Africa has been highly variable. Only Egypt and South Africa, for example, have significantly reported robotic surgery programs. Despite present challenges, recent developments show that progress is being made. Advantages of MIS in resource-limited settings include fewer postoperative complications and shorter hospital stays, crucial for African patients who cannot afford unexpectedly extensive postoperative care and are also reliant on daily earnings. In the future, tele-robotic surgery can improve access to surgical care in under-served regions of the continent. Implementation barriers include the high cost of equipment, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, and limited training opportunities. Investment in the development of low-cost innovations, such as MIS equipment suited for resource-limited settings, local manufacturing or assembly of MIS equipment, and the establishment of training programs within the continent, is necessary to overcome these challenges. Policies supporting the integration of MIS into national healthcare plans are also required. The development of more robust MIS programs in Africa will not only enhance surgical care but will also contribute to the improvement of healthcare and economic outcomes across the continent. We present this commentary on the current state, challenges, and opportunities for the wider adoption of MIS across Africa, based on recent continent-wide reviews.

Abstract
Background Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols are evidence-based, multidisciplinary approaches designed to minimize perioperative stress, accelerate patient recovery, and reduce healthcare resource utilization. Although well-established in colorectal and other major abdominal surgeries, evidence supporting their effectiveness in laparoscopic radical prostatectomy (LRP) remains limited. This retrospective cohort study evaluated whether implementing an enhanced recovery program (ERP), specifically adapted for LRP, would reduce hospital length of stay (LOS) and maintain patient safety. Methods A total of 60 patients undergoing radical prostatectomy were retrospectively analyzed and divided into three cohorts: a historical control group (pre-ERP, n=20), an implementation group (ERP compliance <70%, n=20), and a consolidated group (ERP compliance >70%, n=20). Primary outcome measures included hospital LOS, while secondary outcomes encompassed postoperative complications graded by Clavien-Dindo classification, protocol compliance rates, readmissions, and reoperations. Results Median hospital LOS significantly decreased following ERP implementation, from five days in the historical group to three days (p<0.001) in the implementation cohort, and further declined to two days (p<0.001) in the consolidated cohort. Higher ERP compliance (>70%) was strongly associated with shorter hospitalization. Importantly, ERP implementation did not increase the incidence of severe postoperative complications (Clavien-Dindo grades III-V), readmissions, or reoperations. Conclusions Implementing a structured ERP for laparoscopic radical prostatectomy significantly reduced hospital LOS without negatively impacting patient safety. Higher compliance with ERP elements was strongly correlated with enhanced patient outcomes. These findings highlight the clinical benefits of ERP adoption and underscore the importance of multidisciplinary adherence for optimizing surgical recovery and healthcare efficiency.

Challenges such as high costs, accessibility issues, and limited long-term data are critically analyzed, alongside gaps in research, including a lack of diversity in study populations and insufficient economic evaluations. Future directions emphasize the need for multidisciplinary collaboration to develop durable, accessible, and personalized solutions to address the global burden of spinal disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite numerous barriers, the application of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for hepatopancreatobiliary (HPB) conditions has been increasing globally. This study aims to review the current status of HPB MIS in LMICs. METHODS Relevant databases were searched, identifying 3452 publications, 38 of which met the inclusion criteria. Meta-analysis of outcomes was carried out using "R" statistical software. RESULTS This study reviewed reports of application of MIS for HPB conditions in LMICs, analyzing a total of 3272 procedures. India (66.87 %) and Egypt (20.11 %) contributed majorly to the procedures reviewed. Others were from Indonesia (8.68 %), Colombia (3.06 %), Pakistan (0.67 %), Sri Lanka (0.34 %), Trinidad and Tobago (0.18 %), and Nigeria (0.09 %). India was the only LMIC with robotic HPB MIS. The majority of the procedures were biliary (74.88 %). Basic procedures accounted for 55.63 %, while 44.37 % were advanced. The overall conversion rate and prevalence of morbidity were 8 % [95 % CI: 5; 13], and 15 % [95 % CI: 9; 22], respectively. Robotics was associated with higher conversion (14 % vs 6 %, p < 0.01) but lower morbidity (10 % vs 16 %, p = 0.91), compared to laparoscopic surgery. There were 5 cases of mortality from laparoscopy. CONCLUSION The outcomes in this systematic review, compared to findings in other settings indicate successful implementation of HPB MIS in LMICs.

Abstract
To show the feasibility of performing human telesurgery robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) between two countries using low-latency ultra-long-distance connectivity. This study described the outcomes of performing RARP on a man in his 60's with localized intermediate-risk prostatic adenocarcinoma located in Kuwait City while the surgeon (SA) was approximately 7000 kilometers (Km) away at Toumai robotic surgical system (TRSS) headquarters in Shanghai. Operative and connectivity details were reported. RARP was performed in December 2024. There were no major clinical or technical problems encountered during the procedure. The average round-trip latency (RTL) was 181.4 milliseconds (ms) using fiber optic broadband network with 5G network as back-up. On the Shanghai end two wired broadband networks were employed as back-up to ensure patient safety. There was an experienced fellowship-trained robotic surgeon (AA) in the operating room in Kuwait capable of taking over in case of clinical or connectivity issues. There were no reported complications. The patient was discharged on postoperative day (POD) 2. Final pathology described Gleason score 7(3 + 4), ISUP 2, and negative surgical margins (pT2Nx). The catheter was removed on POD 9, and the patient was continent a week later. His serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) was undetectable seven weeks post-operatively. This study described the feasibility of human RARP telesurgery between two countries using low-latency, long-distance fiber optic broadband network with 5G network as back-up with successful clinical outcomes. There is a need to establish robust legal and regulatory framework to allow wider international expansion of telesurgery.

Abstract
Robot-assisted surgery has been widely adopted in recent years. However, compared to other health technologies operating in close proximity to patients in a vulnerable state, ethical issues of robot-assisted surgery have received less attention. Against the background of increasing automation that is expected to raise new ethical issues, this systematic review aims to map the state of the ethical debate in this field. A protocol was registered in the international prospective register of systematic reviews (PROSPERO CRD42023397951). Medline via PubMed, EMBASE, CINHAL, Philosophers' Index, IEEE Xplorer, Web of Science (Core Collection), Scopus and Google Scholar were searched in January 2023. Screening, extraction, and analysis were conducted independently by two authors. A qualitative narrative synthesis was performed. Out of 1723 records, 66 records were included in the final dataset. Seven major strands of the ethical debate emerged during the analysis. These include questions of harms and benefits, responsibility and control, professional-patient relationship, ethical issues in surgical training and learning, justice, translational questions, and economic considerations. The identified themes testify to a broad range of different ethical issues requiring careful deliberation and integration into the surgical ethos. Looking forward, we argue that a different perspective in addressing robotic surgical devices might be helpful to consider upcoming challenges of automation.

Abstract
Robotic-assisted surgery (RAS) has revolutionized surgical practice worldwide, with urology leading its adoption. Despite its global expansion, significant disparities exist in regional implementation, particularly in the Arab world. This study evaluates the current landscape of robotic surgery in the Arab world, highlighting advancements, challenges, and future directions. A literature review was conducted using PubMed, focusing on robotic procedures across multiple specialties in Arab countries. Data on installed robotic systems were obtained from industry reports and local distributors. A total of 56 relevant publications were identified. The highest volume of RAS publications originated from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates. Emerging trends include a rise in multidisciplinary robotic procedures, innovative telesurgical applications, and increased research output. However, high-quality, large-scale studies remain limited. The Arab world has made notable strides in RAS adoption, with key centers advancing research and clinical practice. Although full integration remains a work in progress, the foundation for widespread robotic surgical adoption in the Arab world is firmly in place.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Artificial intelligence now encompasses technologies like machine learning, natural language processing, and robotics, allowing machines to undertake complex tasks traditionally done by humans. AI's application in healthcare has led to advancements in diagnostic tools, predictive analytics, and surgical precision. AIM This comprehensive review aims to explore the transformative impact of AI across diverse healthcare domains, highlighting its applications, advancements, challenges, and contributions to enhancing patient care. METHODOLOGY A comprehensive literature search was conducted across multiple databases, covering publications from 2014 to 2024. Keywords related to AI applications in healthcare were used to gather data, focusing on studies exploring AI's role in medical specialties. RESULTS AI has demonstrated substantial benefits across various fields of medicine. In cardiology, it aids in automated image interpretation, risk prediction, and the management of cardiovascular diseases. In oncology, AI enhances cancer detection, treatment planning, and personalized drug selection. Radiology benefits from improved image analysis and diagnostic accuracy, while critical care sees advancements in patient triage and resource optimization. AI's integration into pediatrics, surgery, public health, neurology, pathology, and mental health has similarly shown significant improvements in diagnostic precision, personalized treatment, and overall patient care. The implementation of AI in low-resource settings has been particularly impactful, enhancing access to advanced diagnostic tools and treatments. CONCLUSION AI is rapidly changing the healthcare industry by greatly increasing the accuracy of diagnoses, streamlining treatment plans, and improving patient outcomes across a variety of medical specializations. This review underscores AI's transformative potential, from early disease detection to personalized treatment plans, and its ability to augment healthcare delivery, particularly in resource-limited settings.

Abstract
Background: Urachal pathologies, while rare, carry a risk of malignant transformation. Robot-assisted urachal excision and partial cystectomy (RAUEPC) is a minimally invasive technique that offers potential advantages, but the available evidence remains limited. This study aims to evaluate the outcomes of RAUEPC for benign and malignant urachal pathologies through a systematic review and single-center experience. Methods: A systematic review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, the Cochrane Library, and ScienceDirect (last search: 1 November 2024). Inclusion criteria encompassed studies reporting on RAUEPC for urachal pathologies, while non-robotic approaches and incomplete data were excluded. Risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for cohort studies and the JBI Critical Appraisal Checklist for Case Reports. Descriptive statistics summarized continuous data (means, medians, 95% confidence intervals), and chi-square tests analyzed associations between categorical variables. Heterogeneity analysis was infeasible, necessitating narrative synthesis. Institutional retrospective data from three cases (2021-2024) were included for comparison. This study was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42024597785). No external funding was received. Results: A total of 44 studies (n = 145) met the inclusion criteria. Benign lesions accounted for 66.2% and malignant lesions for 33.8%. Mean operative time was 177.8 min (cumulative), 162.7 min (benign), 192.2 min (malignant), 85.33 min (institutional, 95% CI: 74.13-96.53). Mean blood loss was 85.4 mL (cumulative), 99.5 mL (benign), 72.7 mL (malignant), 216.66 mL (institutional). Mean hospital stay was 3.64 days (cumulative), 3.26 days (benign), 4.36 days (malignant), 6.33 days (institutional, 95% CI: 3.46-9.20). Complications occurred in 10.04% (cumulative), 11.82% (benign), 8.57% (malignant), with one minor event (Clavien-Dindo II) in institutional cases. No conversions to open surgery were reported. All cases achieved complete excision with no R1 resections. No recurrences were observed at 10.66-month (institutional) mean follow-up. Conclusions: RAUEPC appears to be a feasible and safe approach with promising short-term outcomes. The associations between symptoms and diagnostic methods highlight its utility. The limitations of the evidence include small sample sizes and retrospective designs. Further prospective studies are needed to validate these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES For healthcare institutions developing a robotic programme, delivering value for patients, clinicians, and payers is key. However, the impact on the surgeon, training pathways, and logistics are often overlooked. We conducted a study on the impact of robotic surgery on surgeons, access to robotic surgical training, and factors associated with developing a successful robotic programme. METHOD In our international mixed-methods study, a customised web-based survey was circulated to gynaecological oncologists. The Wilcoxon rank-sum test and Fisher's exact test, tested the hypothesis of the differences in continuous and categorical variables. Multiple linear regression was used to model the effect of variables on outcomes adjusting for gender, age, and postgraduate experience. Outcomes included situational awareness, surgeon fatigue/stress, and the surgical learning curve. Qualitative data were collected via in-depth semi-structured interviews using an inductive theoretical framework to explore access to surgical training and logistical considerations in the development of a successful robotic programme. RESULTS In total, 94%, 45%, and 48% of survey respondents (n = 152) stated that robotic surgery was less physically tiring/mentally tiring/stressful in comparison to laparoscopic surgery. Our data suggest gender differences in the robotics learning curve with men six times more likely to state robotic surgery had negatively impacted their situational awareness in the operating theatre (OR = 6.35, p ≤ 0.001) and 2.5 times more likely to state it had negatively impacted their surgical ability due to lack of haptic feedback in comparison to women (OR = 2.62, p = 0.046). Women were more risk-averse in case selection, but there were no self-reported differences in the intra-operative complication rates between male and female surgeons (OR = 1, p = 0.1). In total, 22/25 robotically trained surgeons interviewed did not follow a structured curriculum of learning. Low and middle income country centres had less access to robotic surgery. The success of robotic programmes was measured by the number of cases performed per annum, with 74% of survey respondents stating that introducing robotics increased the proportion of surgeries performed by minimal access surgery. There was a distinct lack of knowledge on the environmental impact of robotic surgery. CONCLUSIONS Whilst robotic surgery is considered a landmark innovation in surgery, it must be responsibly implemented through effective training and waste minimisation, which must be a key metric in measuring the success of robotic programmes.

Abstract
Robotic colorectal surgery represents a significant advancement in the management of complex colorectal conditions, offering enhanced precision, safety, and improved patient outcomes. It is widely utilised for colorectal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, diverticular disease, and rectal prolapse, with key benefits such as 3D visualisation, superior dexterity, and precise navigation in confined spaces. These advantages contribute to lower conversion rates to open surgery, faster recovery, reduced pain, and shorter hospital stays. This narrative review analysed recent peer-reviewed literature, focusing on technological advancements, clinical outcomes, and emerging challenges in robotic colorectal surgery. Findings highlight improved oncological precision, faster recovery, and fewer complications, driven by innovations like AI-guided decision-making and advanced robotic platforms. However, issues such as prolonged operative times, high costs, and steep learning curves remain. Future efforts should prioritise integrating AI, enhancing surgeon training, and addressing cost barriers to maximise the potential of robotic colorectal surgery in improving patient care.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The high spatial cognition and freedom of forceps manipulation provided by robotic assistance enable three-dimensional liver resection. This is highly beneficial and innovative in laparoscopic hepatectomy. One of the remaining issues is bleeding control in cases of easily hemorrhagic cirrhotic liver. We reported a pre-coagulation technique by microwave. To our knowledge, this is the first report of robotic-assisted liver resection with a pre-coagulation technique by microwave. MATERIALS AND SURGICAL TECHNIQUE The patient was a 71-year-old male with a history of alcoholic hepatitis and was diagnosed with a 2-cm HCC in segment 3. The preoperative indocyanine green retention test at 15 min (ICG-R15) was 18.9%; imaging studies showed findings suggestive of chronic hepatitis or cirrhosis. We decided to perform microwave pre-coagulation because of fears of difficulty in controlling bleeding. After taping the hepatoduodenal ligament, the location of the tumor was confirmed using ultrasound. The resection line with margin was marked on liver, and microwave pre-coagulation was performed, avoiding major Glisson branch and veins. The location of the pre-coagulated area and the tumor was determined by ultrasound. After pre-coagulation, the liver parenchyma was dissected under Pringle's maneuver by double bipolar technique. The operation time was 248 min; blood loss was 100 mL. The patient was discharged on the sixth postoperative day without intraoperative or postoperative complications. DISCUSSION Microwave pre-coagulation may be a useful approach to bleeding control in robotic hepatectomy. This technique would not necessarily be needed in all cases. However, it is important to have this knowledge to ensure safety in cases where hemostasis is expected to be difficult or when robotic hepatectomy is being introduced.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Minimally invasive surgery for colorectal cancer (CRC) offer superior outcomes compared to open surgery. This study aimed to review the robotic and laparoscopic procedures for CRC performed in Africa, and compare the mean surgery duration, blood loss, hospital stay, rate of conversion, and prevalence of morbidity and mortality. This is the first study to compare the outcomes of robotic and laparoscopic surgeries for CRC in Africa. METHODS A systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines was conducted. PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science, AJOL, EMBASE, and CENTRAL were searched, identifying 2,259 publications, 33 of which were deemed eligible. Statistical analysis of outcomes was performed using "R". Methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the Cochrane ROBINS-I tool. RESULTS The minimally invasive approach has been applied for CRC treatment in seven African countries: Algeria, Cameroon, Egypt, Morocco, Nigeria, Senegal, and South Africa. Laparoscopic surgeries accounted for 1,485 (95%) of cases, while 71 (5%) were robotic. Robotic procedures were associated with a longer surgery duration (256.41 min vs. 190.45 min, p < 0.0001), higher blood loss (226.48 mL vs. 141.55 mL, p < 0.0001), and a shorter hospital stay (4.52 days vs. 6.06 days, p = 0.85). Robotic procedures had a lower rate of conversion (3% vs. 8%, p = 0.29) and a lower prevalence of morbidity (19% vs. 26%, p = 0.26). Wound infection (24.49%) and ileus (57.14%) were the most common complications following laparoscopic and robotic procedures, respectively. There was no mortality from robotic surgeries; however, a prevalence of 0.39% (95% CI: 0;1.19) was recorded from laparoscopy. CONCLUSIONS This study establishes and compares the outcomes of advances in the treatment of CRC in the African setting, providing insights for policymakers, healthcare providers, and international organizations to make decisions regarding optimizing care for CRC patients in Africa.

Abstract
Robotic surgery offers several advantages to the African setting, including shorter hospital stays, faster return to work, and increased overall productivity. However, its adoption has been limited by several factors. This review aims to present the barriers to implementation, and recommendations for integrating robotic surgery into the African healthcare system. Use of robotic surgery in Africa is primarily limited to Egypt and South Africa. Barriers faced by other countries were categorized into economic, infrastructural, systemic, and training-related. They include limited healthcare budgets, initial costs of robotic systems, patients' inability to afford robotic procedures, out-of-pocket healthcare financing, inadequate power supply, limited internet connectivity, poor healthcare leadership, and insufficient surgeon training facilities. Public-private partnerships, provision of loans and subsidies, introduction of cheaper robotic systems, and local manufacturing of robotic equipment will serve as cost-effective innovations. It is also important to improve healthcare financing and strengthen healthcare leadership across Africa. To address the lack of surgeon training facilities, remote assistance for surgeon training can be used to create a mentor-mentee relationship between robotic surgeons in any part of the world and surgical trainees in Africa to facilitate knowledge transfer. Prior investment in electricity and network infrastructure is however necessary. Establishment of fellowships to provide early exposure to robotic surgery should also be explored. AI-integrated robotic surgery can also enhance precision and safety, and provide tailored training tools for surgeons. Similar barriers to the adoption of surgical robotics are faced across Africa. By implementing the provided recommendations, robotic surgery can still be widely adopted in African settings, despite the delay.

Abstract
The Hugo™ robotic assisted surgery system is a relatively new robotic platform developed by Medtronic. The study objective was to describe the experience of using Hugo™ robotic assisted surgery in gynecological surgeries and compare robotic assisted surgery-related outcomes between complex and non-complex gynecological patients at the Pacifica Salud Hospital. We performed secondary data retrospective analysis of 144 consecutive patients who underwent gynecological surgery with Hugo™ robotic assisted surgery system (Medtronic) at the Pacifica Salud hospital in Panama City from July 19, 2021, to August 3, 2023. Complex patients were defined as those with one or more risk factors for surgery complications. Descriptive analysis of participants' sociodemographic and robotic assisted surgery-related characteristics. Due to the non-normal distribution of the RAS-related numeric variables, we compared these variables between complex and non-complex cases of gynecological patients using Kruskal-Wallis's test. The study found that Hugo™ robotic assisted surgery system was safe for gynecological surgery in patients with and without risk factors for developing major surgery complications. None of the patients experienced any complications, and they had short hospital stays with low blood loss without requiring a blood transfusion. The Hugo™ robotic assisted surgery system was technically sound and did not present technical failures. The results could be a reference for adopting this technology and developing best practices in the Latin American region.

Abstract
Telesurgery, the remote execution of surgical procedures through telecommunication and robotic systems, has witnessed substantial growth in recent years, promising to address global healthcare disparities and enhance surgical expertise. This paper explores the humanitarian and surgical benefits of telesurgery, emphasizing its potential to provide expert surgical care to underserved regions. Despite its transformative potential, telesurgery faces significant technologic challenges, including issues of data transmission, latency, and the need for advanced robotic platforms. The advent of 5G networks and innovative robotic systems provides a promising technological landscape, yet global disparities in 5G coverage remain a concern. Ethical considerations, ranging from preserving the surgeon-patient relationship to addressing patient vulnerability and conflicts of interest, are pivotal aspects that demand attention. The paper underscores the importance of clear regulatory frameworks and international collaboration to navigate legal complexities and ensure ethical standards. As telesurgery progresses, integrating artificial intelligence, augmented reality, and haptic feedback technologies holds promise for further advancements. Despite these challenges, telesurgery has the potential to achieve equitable access to expert surgical care; however, it requires a collective effort to overcome its intricate technologic and administrative hurdles.

Abstract
As the global surgical robotic ecosystem diversifies, multi-platform surgery is becoming increasingly common. The natural question is whether these robots differ in performance and cost. We address this question and report the first systematic review comparing platforms. A systematic search identified clinical studies comparing at least two platforms. Of 287 studies, 31 were included, with 5 RCTs and 26 cohort studies, including 3624 patients. All studies compared da Vinci with Hintori, Hugo, KangDuo, Micro-Hand, Revo-I, Senhance, and Versius robots. Comparisons were across specialties: urology (18 studies; upper and lower tract), general surgery (11 studies; inguinal and ventral hernia, cholecystectomy, colorectal, pancreatic, oesophagectomy, distal gastrectomy), gynaecology (3 studies; hysterectomy, sacrocolpopexy). There were no differences in conversion rate, estimated blood loss, complication rate, pathological parameters, oncological outcomes (6 months), and functional outcomes (12 months). Results were mixed on operative time and its components. Length of stay was largely similar. Surgeon task load was similar (2 studies). Operative cost was 45-60% lower on the newer platforms (3 studies). Operative, clinical, oncological, and functional outcomes were similar for da Vinci and the newer robots across a range of abdominopelvic procedures, with a signal of lower cost on newer types. Studies were heterogeneous. Data on non-technical skills, other human factors, and comparative learning curves was scant. The majority of evidence was low quality and retrospective. However, accumulating evidence on safety, efficacy, and non-inferiority of the newer platforms has implications for robotic training programmes and procurement.

Abstract
AIM To explore the experiences of nurses working with robotic assisted surgery patients. BACKGROUND Robotic assisted surgery has grown considerably since its introduction in the 1980's with more than 6500 da Vinci robots installed worldwide and over 55,000 surgeons trained to use these machines. Nurses play a major role in the successful completion of robotic surgery; however, minimal research has been conducted in the literature to date surrounding robotic assisted surgery nurses' experiences working in the perioperative department and beyond. DESIGN Qualitative descriptive design with thematic analysis. METHOD The study sample was recruited from three care settings where nurses work with robotic assisted surgery patients including: operating theatre, surgical ward and the community. Ten semi-structured face to face interviews were conducted. Interviews were audio recorded with data transcribed verbatim and analysed using thematic analysis. RESULTS Themes included - 1. Limited education specific to robotic assisted surgery, Subthemes: Robotic assisted surgery patient safety concerns; Lacking technical education and training; and Lacking patient postoperative care education. 2. Challenges for nurses working with robotic assisted surgery, Subthemes: Diverse dynamics in the robotic assisted surgery environment; Working with inexperienced staff; and Communication difficulties. CONCLUSION The key findings from this research are that nurses experience of working with robotic assisted surgery patients outside of the perioperative area is limited and all nurses require more education specific to caring for robotic assisted surgery patients to be competent in their roles. Further research from a national and international perspective is required to better understand the needs of nurses working with robotic assisted surgery patients.

Abstract
Esophageal surgery is deemed one of the most complex visceral operations. There is a well-documented correlation between higher caseload and better outcomes, with hospitals that perform more surgeries experiencing significantly lower mortality rates. The approach to caseload per year varies across different countries within Europe. Germany increased the minimum annual required caseload of complex esophageal surgeries from 10 to 26 starting in 2023. Furthermore, the new regulations present challenges for surgical training and staff recruitment, risking the further fragmentation of training programs. Enhanced regional cooperation is proposed as a solution to ensure comprehensive training. This review explores the benefits of robotic-assisted minimally invasive esophagectomy (RAMIE) in improving surgical precision and patient outcomes and aims to evaluate how the caseload per year influences the quality of patient care and the efficacy of surgical training, especially with the integration of advanced robotic techniques.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Robot-assisted gastrointestinal and liver surgery has been an important development direction in the field of surgery in recent years and it is also one of the fastest developing and most concerning fields in surgical operations. AIM To illustrate the major areas of research and forward-looking directions over the past twenty-six years. METHODS Using the Web of Science Core Collection database, a comprehensive review of scholarly articles pertaining to robot-assisted gastrointestinal and liver surgery was researched out between 2000 and 2023. We used Citespace (Version 6.2.4) and Bibliometrix package (Version 4.3.0) to visualize the analysis of all publications including country, institutional affiliations, authors, and keywords. RESULTS In total, 346 articles were retrieved. Surgical Endoscopy had with the largest number of publications and was cited in this field. The United States was a core research country in this field. Yonsei University was the most productive institution. The current focus of this field is on rectal surgery, long-term prognosis, perioperative management, previous surgical experience, and the learning curve. CONCLUSION The scientific interest in robot-assisted gastrointestinal and liver surgery has experienced a significant rise since 1997. This study provides new perspectives and ideas for future research in this field.

Abstract
Head and neck cancer accounts for 2.8% of all cancers and a large proportion of these patients have a locally advanced stage of the disease, for which chemotherapy and radiation therapy are potentially curative treatments. Dysphagia is one of the most common chemoradiotherapy-related side effects in head and neck cancer since it can lead to life-threatening complications. Reports from the current literature suggest better swallowing outcomes with intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) compared to three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy (3DCT). However, in low-/middle-income countries, multiple healthcare access barriers to 3DCT that may lead to higher rates of chemo/radiotherapy related adverse events. This narrative review provides a comprehensive appraisal of published peer-reviewed data, as well as a description of the clinical practice in an otolaryngology referral center in Colombia, a low-income country.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Robot-assisted pancreaticoduodenectomy (R-PD) helps further improve the safety and efficacy of minimally invasive pancreaticoduodenectomy. However, it faces challenges such as high costs and limitations in availability at different centers, making it difficult for patients to access. In this study, we evaluate the initial experience of Artisential®-assisted PD (A-PD) and compare its perioperative outcomes with R-PD, discussing the clinical applicability of A-PD. METHODS This study reviewed cases of R-PD and A-PD conducted between 2022 and 2023. A total of 34 patients underwent R-PD, while 26 patients underwent A-PD. Statistical analysis was conducted based on factors related to the patient's surgical procedure and postoperative prognostic indicators. RESULTS There were no significant differences observed between the two groups in terms of surgical factors. There were also no differences in the occurrence of postoperative complications. However, there was a significant difference in the length of hospital stay, with the Artisential® group having an average of 11.50 ± 5.54 days and the Robot group having 15.06 ± 5.34 days (p = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS R-PD and A-PD showed no differences in procedures or outcomes. Using a multi-articulated device is beneficial where robot use is challenging.

Abstract
Purpose Surgical practice globally has undergone significant advancements with the advent of robotic systems. In Africa, a similar trend is emerging with the introduction of robots into various surgical specialties in certain countries. The need to review the robotic procedures performed, platforms utilized, and analyze outcomes such as conversion, morbidity, and mortality associated with robotic surgery in Africa, necessitated this study. This is the first study examining the status and outcomes of robotic surgery in Africa. Methods A thorough scoping search was performed in PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science, and African Journals Online. Of the 1,266 studies identified, 16 studies across 3 countries met the inclusion criteria. A meta-analysis conducted using R statistical software estimated the pooled prevalences with the 95% confidence interval (CI) of conversion, morbidity, and mortality. Results Surgical robots are reportedly in use in South Africa, Egypt, and Tunisia. Across four specialties, 1,328 procedures were performed using da Vinci (Intuitive Surgical), Versius (CMR Surgical), and Senhance (Asensus Surgical) surgical robotic platforms. Urological procedures (90.1%) were the major procedures performed, with robotic prostatectomy (49.3%) being the most common procedure. The pooled rate of conversion and prevalence of morbidity from the meta-analysis was 0.21% (95% CI, 0%-0.54%) and 21.15% (95% CI, 7.45%-34.85%), respectively. There was no reported case of mortality. Conclusion The outcomes highlight successful implementation and the potential for wider adoption. Based on our findings, we advocate for multidisciplinary and multinational collaboration, investment in surgical training programs, and policy initiatives aimed at addressing barriers to the widespread adoption of robotic surgery in Africa.

Abstract
Robotic surgery, known for its minimally invasive techniques and computer-controlled robotic arms, has revolutionized modern medicine by providing improved dexterity, visualization, and tremor reduction compared to traditional methods. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into robotic surgery has further advanced surgical precision, efficiency, and accessibility. This paper examines the current landscape of AI-driven robotic surgical systems, detailing their benefits, limitations, and future prospects. Initially, AI applications in robotic surgery focused on automating tasks like suturing and tissue dissection to enhance consistency and reduce surgeon workload. Present AI-driven systems incorporate functionalities such as image recognition, motion control, and haptic feedback, allowing real-time analysis of surgical field images and optimizing instrument movements for surgeons. The advantages of AI integration include enhanced precision, reduced surgeon fatigue, and improved safety. However, challenges such as high development costs, reliance on data quality, and ethical concerns about autonomy and liability hinder widespread adoption. Regulatory hurdles and workflow integration also present obstacles. Future directions for AI integration in robotic surgery include enhancing autonomy, personalizing surgical approaches, and refining surgical training through AI-powered simulations and virtual reality. Overall, AI integration holds promise for advancing surgical care, with potential benefits including improved patient outcomes and increased access to specialized expertise. Addressing challenges and promoting responsible adoption are essential for realizing the full potential of AI-driven robotic surgery.

Abstract
Endometriosis is a chronic condition affecting approximately 10% of women of reproductive age, leading to significant physical and emotional stress. Treatments include medical management and surgical interventions, with laparoscopic surgery being the gold standard for removing endometrial tissue. The advent of robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery (RALS) has enabled more complex procedures to be performed minimally invasively, increasing its use in high-difficulty surgeries. Developed in the late 20th century, systems like the Da Vinci Surgical System have revolutionized surgery by enhancing precision, dexterity, and visualization. The latest models, including the Da Vinci Xi and SP, offer advanced features such as enhanced arm mobility, fluorescence imaging, and single-port capabilities. Comparative studies of RALS and conventional laparoscopy (LPS) for endometriosis show mixed results. While some studies indicate no significant differences in complications or recovery outcomes, others highlight longer operative times and hospital stays for RALS. Despite these drawbacks, RALS is not inferior to LPS overall. The clinical benefits of RALS include greater precision and accuracy, reduced surgeon fatigue, and a faster learning curve, facilitated by advanced ergonomic and control systems. However, the high costs and extensive infrastructure requirements limit the accessibility and availability of robotic surgery, particularly in smaller or rural hospitals. The absence of tactile feedback remains a challenge, though upcoming advancements aim to address this. Continued research and development are essential to make robotic surgery more cost-effective and broadly accessible, ensuring its benefits can reach a wider patient population. This abstract encapsulates the key aspects of robotic surgery's development, comparative studies with conventional methods, and its clinical benefits and limitations, highlighting the need for ongoing improvements and research.

Abstract
The modern hospital setting is closely related to engineering and technology. In a hospital, modern equipment is abundant in every department, including the operating room, intensive care unit, and laboratories. Thus, the quality of treatment provided in hospitals and technology advancements are closely tied. Robotic systems are used to support and improve the accuracy and agility of human surgeons during medical procedures. This surgical approach is commonly referred to as robotic surgery or robotic-assisted surgery (RAS). These systems are not entirely autonomous; they are managed by skilled surgeons who carry out procedures with improved accuracy and minimized invasiveness using a console and specialized instruments. Because RAS offers increased surgical precision, less discomfort after surgery, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery time, all of which improve patient outcomes and lessen the strain on healthcare resources, it plays a critical role in public health. Its minimally invasive technique benefits patients and the healthcare system by lowering problems, reducing the requirement for blood transfusions, and reducing the danger of infections related to medical care. Furthermore, the possibility of remote surgery via robotic systems can increase access to specialized care, reducing regional differences and advancing fairness in public health. In this review article, we will be covering how RAS has its role in public health.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Minimally invasive Pancreatoduodenectomy (MIPD), or the Whipple procedure, is increasingly utilized. No study has compared laparoscopic (LPD) and robotic (RPD) approaches, and the impact of the learning curve on oncologic, technical, and post-operative outcomes remains relatively understudied. METHODS The National Cancer Database was queried for patients undergoing LPD or RPD from 2010 to 2020 with a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. Outcomes were compared between approaches using propensity-score matching (PSM); the impact of annual center-level volume of MIPD was also assessed by dividing volume into quartiles. RESULTS A total of 3,342 patients were included. Most (n = 2,716, 81.3%) underwent LPD versus RPD (n = 626, 18.7%). There was a high rate (20.2%, n = 719) of positive margins. Mean length-of-stay (LOS) was 10.4 ± 8.9 days. Thirty-day mortality was 2.8% (n = 92) and ninety-day mortality was 5.7% (n = 189). PSM matched 625 pairs of patients receiving LPD or RPD. After PSM, there was no differences between groups based on age, sex, race, CCI, T-stage, neoadjuvant chemo/radiotherapy, or type of PD. After PSM, there was a higher rate of conversion to open (HR = 0.68, 95%CI = 0.50-0.92)., but there was no difference in LOS (HR = 1.00, 95%CI = 0.92-1.11), 30-day readmission (HR = 1.08, 95% CI = 0.68-1.71), 30-day (HR = 0.78, 95% CI = 0.39-1.56) or 90-day mortality (HR = 0.70, 95% CI = 0.42-1.16), ability to receive adjuvant therapy (HR = 1.15, 95% CI = 0.92-1.44), nodal harvest (HR = 1.01, 95%CI = 0.94-1.09) or positive margins (HR = 1.19, 95% CI = 0.89-1.59). Centers in lower quartiles of annual volume of MIPD demonstrated reduced nodal harvest (p = 0.005) and a higher rate of conversion to open (p = 0.038). Higher-volume centers had a shorter LOS (p = 0.012), higher rate of initiation of adjuvant therapy (p = 0.042), and, most strikingly, a reduction in 90-day mortality (p = 0.033). CONCLUSION LPD and RPD have similar surgical and oncologic outcomes, with a lower rate of conversion to open in the robotic cohort. The robotic technique does not appear to eliminate the "learning curve", with higher volume centers demonstrating improved outcomes, especially seen at minimum annual volume of 5 cases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Current practice patterns suggest open rather than minimally invasive (MIS) approaches for thymomas >4 cm. We hypothesized there would be similar perioperative outcomes and overall survival between open and MIS approaches for large (>4 cm) thymoma resection. METHODS The National Cancer Database was queried for patients who underwent thymectomy from 2010 to 2020. Surgical approach was characterized as either open or MIS. The primary outcome was overall survival and secondary outcomes were margin status, and length of stay (LOS). Differences between approach cohorts were compared after a 1:1 propensity match. RESULTS Among 4121 thymectomies, 2474 (60%) were open and 1647 (40%) were MIS. Patients undergoing MIS were older, had fewer comorbidities, and had smaller tumors (median; 4.6 vs 6 cm, P < .001). In the unmatched cohort, MIS and open had similar 90-day mortality (1.1% vs 1.8%, P = .158) and rate of positive margin (25.1% vs 27.9%, P = .109). MIS thymectomy was associated with shorter LOS (2 (1-4) vs 4 (3-6) days, P < .001). Propensity matching reduced the bias between the groups. In this cohort, overall survival was similar between the groups by log-rank test (P = .462) and multivariate cox hazard analysis (HR .882, P = .472). Multivariable regression showed shorter LOS with MIS approach (Coef -1.139, P < .001), and similar odds of positive margin (OR 1.130, P = .150). DISCUSSION MIS has equivalent oncologic benefit to open resection for large thymomas, but is associated with shorter LOS. When clinically appropriate, MIS thymectomy may be considered a safe alternative to open resection for large thymomas.

Abstract
Robotic surgery has emerged as a transformative technology in obstetrics and gynecology, offering enhanced precision and minimally invasive techniques for various procedures. This paper explores the evolution of robotic surgery in obstetrics and gynecology, examining its historical development, current applications, and prospects. Through a comprehensive review of the literature and case studies, we highlight the benefits of robotic surgery, including reduced trauma, improved patient outcomes, and increased surgeon capabilities. However, cost, training requirements, and regulatory concerns hinder widespread adoption. Continuing technological innovation is expected to enhance the efficacy and applicability of robotic-assisted procedures. Collaboration between healthcare professionals, researchers, and industry stakeholders is essential to address these challenges and ensure optimal patient care. By embracing the opportunities presented by robotic surgery while addressing associated challenges, practitioners and researchers can contribute to the continued advancement of this transformative technology in obstetrics and gynecology.

Abstract
The scarcity of Health Human Resources (HHR), regional disparities, and decentralized healthcare systems have profoundly affected health equity in Canada. Adequate HHR allocation is essential for equitable healthcare delivery, and the COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the importance of resilient and culturally diverse organizational HHR. Geography and infrastructure shortcomings aggravate healthcare equity. This study examines the role of innovative technologies in reducing inequity and provides four practice-based examples in different therapeutic areas. Long-term solutions such as collaborative networks, infrastructure improvements, and effective HHR planning can mitigate current challenges. However, in the short and medium terms, advanced medical technologies, digital health, and artificial intelligence can reduce health inequities by improving access, reducing disparities, optimizing resource utilization, and providing skill development opportunities for healthcare professionals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is a blooming trend in the application of robotic surgery in oral and maxillofacial care, and different studies had evaluated the quality of life (QoL) outcomes among patients who underwent robotic surgery in the oral and maxillofacial region. However, empirical evidence on the QoL outcomes from these procedures is yet to be mapped. Thus, this study was conducted to evaluate the available scientific evidence and gaps concerning the QoL outcomes of patients treated with robotic surgery in the oral and maxillofacial region. METHODS This study adopted a scoping review design, and it was conducted and reported based on the Arksey and O'Malley, PRISMA-ScR, and AMSTAR-2 guidelines. SCOPUS, PubMed, CINAHL Complete, and APA PsycINFO were searched to retrieve relevant literature. Using Rayyan software, the retrieved literature were deduplicated, and screened based on the review's eligibility criteria. Only the eligible articles were included in the review. From the included articles, relevant data were charted, collated, and summarized. RESULTS A total of 123 literature were retrieved from the literature search. After deduplication and screening, only 18 heterogeneous original articles were included in the review. A total of 771 transoral robotic surgeries (TORSs) were reported in these articles, and the TORSs were conducted on patients with oropharyngeal carcinomas (OPC), recurrent tonsillitis, and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). In total, 20 different QoL instruments were used in these articles to assess patients' QoL outcomes, and the most used instrument was the MD Anderson Dysphagia Inventory Questionnaire (MDADI). Physical functions related to swallowing, speech and salivary functions were the most assessed QoL aspects. TORS was reported to result in improved QOL in patients with OPC, OSA, and recurrent tonsillitis, most significantly within the first postoperative year. Notably, the site of the lesion, involvement of neck dissections and the characteristics of the adjuvant therapy seemed to affect the QOL outcome in patients with OPC. CONCLUSION Compared to the conventional treatment modalities, TORS has demonstrated better QoL, mostly in the domains related to oral functions such as swallowing and speech, among patients treated with such. This improvement was most evident within the initial post-operative year.

Abstract
The current review focuses on the latest advances in the improvement and application of fluorescence imaging technology. Near-infrared (NIR) fluorescence imaging is a promising new technique that uses non-specific fluorescent agents and targeted fluorescent tracers combined with a dedicated camera to better navigate and visualize tumors. Fluorescence-guided surgery (FGS) is used to perform various tasks, helping the surgeon to distinguish lymphatic vessels and nodes from surrounding tissues easily and quickly assess the perfusion of the planned resection area, including intraoperative visualization of metastases. The results of the insertion of fluorescence visualization as an auxiliary method to cancer detection and high-risk metastatic lesions in clinical practice have demonstrated enthusiastic results and huge potential. However, intraoperative fluorescence visualization must not be considered as a main diagnostic or treatment method but as an aid to the surgeon. Thus, fluorescence study does not dispense the diagnostic gold standards of benign or malignant tumors (conventional examination, biopsy, ultrasonography and computed tomography, etc.) and can be done usually during intraoperative treatment. Moreover, as fluorescence surgery and fluorescence diagnostic techniques continue to improve, it is likely that they will evolve towards targeted fluorescence imaging probes that will increasingly target a specific type of cancer cell. The most important point remains the search for highly selective messengers of fluorescent labels, which make it possible to identify tumor cells exclusively in the affected organs and indicate to surgeons the boundaries of their spread and metastasis.

Abstract
The use of robots has revolutionized healthcare, wherein further innovations have led to improved precision and accuracy. Conceived in the late 1960s, robot-assisted surgeries have evolved to become an integral part of various surgical specialties. Modern robotic surgical systems are equipped with highly dexterous arms and miniaturized instruments that reduce tremors and enable delicate maneuvers. Implementation of advanced materials and designs along with the integration of imaging and visualization technologies have enhanced surgical accuracy and made robots safer and more adaptable to various procedures. Further, the haptic feedback system allows surgeons to determine the consistency of the tissues they are operating upon, without physical contact, thereby preventing injuries due to the application of excess force. With the implementation of teleoperation, surgeons can now overcome geographical limitations and provide specialized healthcare remotely. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) aids in surgical decision-making by improving the recognition of minute and complex anatomical structures. All these advancements have led to faster recovery and fewer complications in patients. However, the substantial cost of robotic systems, their maintenance, the size of the systems and proper surgeon training pose major challenges. Nevertheless, with future advancements such as AI-driven automation, nanorobots, microscopic incision surgeries, semi-automated telerobotic systems, and the impact of 5G connectivity on remote surgery, the growth curve of robotic surgery points to innovation and stands as a testament to the persistent pursuit of progress in healthcare.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Transoral pharyngeal surgery is mainly feasible with the use of a microscope or robotic systems. Data about alternative methods, with lower costs and easier availability, are sparse. We intended to examine to what extent the endoscope-holding arm is a suitable alternative to the microscope or robotic systems. MATERIAL AND METHODS We retrospectively reviewed subjects who underwent pharyngeal tumor resection with the endoscope-holding arm in our university department. RESULTS We identified 13 subjects who underwent transoral pharyngeal surgery between November 2020 and November 2023. Most subjects presented with an oropharyngeal tumor (6/11 in the lateral wall or tonsil; 4/11 in the tongue base). The oropharyngeal lateral wall or tonsillar tumors were exposed with a standard mouth gag. The tongue-base tumors or hypopharyngeal tumors were exposed with an operating laryngoscope. Advantages over the microscope included an angled view. Advantages over robotic systems included haptic feedback and a faster setup. Advantages over both the microscope and robotic systems included lower costs and easier availability. Visualization with the endoscope was sufficient and similar to that of the microscope. Bimanual action was possible with surgical forceps and a monopolar electrode. CONCLUSIONS Transoral pharyngeal surgery was feasible with the endoscope-holding arm. The endoscope-holding arm could be a cost-efficient alternative to the microscope or robotic systems.

Abstract
Robotic applications have often quickly transitioned from industrial to social. Because of this, robots can now engage with people in a natural way and blend in with their surroundings. Due to the lack of medical professionals, growing healthcare costs, and the exponential rise in the population of vulnerable groups like the ill, elderly, and children with developmental disabilities, the use of social robots in the healthcare system is expanding. As a result, social robots are employed in the medical field to entertain and educate hospitalized patients about health issues, as well as to assist the elderly and sick. They are also employed in the dispensing of medications, rehabilitation, and emotional and geriatric care. Thus, social robots raise the standard and effectiveness of medical care. This article explains how patients and healthcare professionals collaborate with robots in the healthcare industry. The objectives of this collaboration are to resolve moral and legal concerns, improve patient outcomes, and improve healthcare delivery. It has a broad range of uses, including telemedicine, rehabilitation, and robotic surgical support. Human-robot interaction is the term used to describe interactions between social robots and people. Many obstacles stand in the way of human-robot interaction in healthcare, including safety concerns, acceptability issues, appropriateness, usefulness, and the worry that robots may replace human carers. In the end, these difficulties result in a poor adoption rate for robotic technology. As a result, the applications and difficulties of human-robot interaction in healthcare are thoroughly evaluated in this research. This study also reviews future safety prospects from human-robot interaction in healthcare, as well as ethical and usability issues including privacy, trust, and safety, and our aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the use of robots in healthcare, including their applications, benefits, challenges, and prospects, to facilitate a deeper understanding of this evolving field.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Robotic surgical systems have rapidly become integrated into colorectal surgery practice in recent years, particularly for rectal resections, where the advantages of robotic platforms over conventional laparoscopy are more pronounced. However, as with any technological advancement, the initial high costs can be a limiting factor, leading to unequal health service access, especially in middle- and lower-income countries. Materials and Method: A narrative review was conducted with the objective of providing an overview of the escalating adoption, current training programmes, and certification process of robotic colorectal surgery in Brazil. Results: Brazil has witnessed a rapid increase in robotic platforms in recent years. Currently, there are 106 robotic systems installed nationwide. However, approximately 60% of the medical facilities which adopted robotic platforms are in the Southeast region, which is both the most populous and economically prosperous in the country. The Brazilian Society of Coloproctology recently established clear rules for the training programme and certification of colorectal surgeons in robotic surgery. The key components of the training encompass theoretical content, virtual robotic simulation, observation, assistance, and supervised procedures in colorectal surgery. Although the training parameters are well established, no colorectal surgery residency programme in Brazil has yet integrated the teaching and training of robotic surgery into its curriculum. Thus far, the training process has been led by private institutions and the industry. Conclusion: Despite the fast spread of robotic platforms across Brazil, several challenges still need to be addressed to democratise training and promote the widespread use of these platforms. It is crucial to tackle these obstacles to achieve greater integration of robotic technology in colorectal surgery throughout the country.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The robotic approach has vast applications in surgery; however, the utility of robotic gastrectomy has yet to be clearly defined. This study aimed to compare outcomes following robotic gastrectomy at our institution to the national patient-specific predicted outcomes data provided by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP). METHODS We prospectively studied 73 patients who underwent robotic gastrectomy under our care. ACS NSQIP outcomes after gastrectomy and predicted outcomes for our patients were compared with our actual outcomes utilizing students t test and chi-square analysis, where applicable. Data are presented as median (mean ± SD). RESULTS Patients were 65 (66 ± 10.7) years old with a BMI of 26 (28 ± 6.5) kg/m2. 35 patients had gastric adenocarcinomas and 22 had gastrointestinal stromal tumors Operative duration was 245 (250 ± 114.7) minutes, estimated blood loss was 50 (83 ± 91.6) mL, and there were no conversions to 'open'. 1% of patients experienced superficial surgical site infections compared to the NSQIP predicted rate of 10% (P < .05). Length of stay (LOS) was 5 (6 ± 4.2) days vs NSQIP's predicted LOS of 8 (8 ± 3.2) days (P < .05). Three patients died during their postoperative hospital course (4%), due to multi-system organ failure and cardiac arrest. 1-year, 3-year, and 5-year estimated survival for patients with gastric adenocarcinoma was 76%, 63%, and 63%, respectively. DISCUSSION Robotic gastrectomy yields salutary patient outcomes and optimal survival for varying gastric diseases, particularly gastric adenocarcinoma. Our patients experienced shorter hospital stays and reduced complications relative to patients in NSQIP and predicted outcome for our patients. Gastrectomy undertaken robotically is the future of gastric resection.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Robotic surgery has been widely adopted in general surgery worldwide but access to this technology is still limited to a few hospitals. With the recent introduction of new robotic platforms, several studies reported the feasibility of different surgical procedures. The aim of this systematic review is to highlight the current clinical practice with the new robotic platforms in general surgery. Materials and Methods: A grey literature search was performed on the Internet to identify the available robotic systems. A PRISMA compliant systematic review was conducted for all English articles up to 10 February 2023 searching the following databases: MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library. Clinical outcomes, training process, operating surgeon background, cost-analysis, and specific registries were evaluated. Results: A total of 103 studies were included for qualitative synthesis after the full-text screening. Of the fifteen robotic platforms identified, only seven were adopted in a clinical environment. Out of 4053 patients, 2819 were operated on with a new robotic device. Hepatopancreatobiliary surgery specialty performed the majority of procedures, and the most performed procedure was cholecystectomy. Globally, 109 emergency surgeries were reported. Concerning the training process, only 45 papers reported the background of the operating surgeon, and only 28 papers described the training process on the surgical platform. Only one cost-analysis compared a new robot to the existing reference. Two manufacturers promoted a specific registry to collect clinical outcomes. Conclusions: This systematic review highlights the feasibility of most surgical procedures in general surgery using the new robotic platforms. Adoption of these new devices in general surgery is constantly growing with the extension of regulatory approvals. Standardization of the training process and the assessment of skills' transferability is still lacking. Further studies are required to better understand the real clinical and economical benefit.

Abstract
Surgical mitral valve repair through median sternotomy has long presented the treatment of choice for degenerative mitral valve disease. In recent decades, minimal invasive surgical techniques have been developed and are now gaining widespread popularity. Robotic cardiac surgery presents an emerging field, initially adopted only by selected centres, mostly in the United States. In recent years, the number of centers interested in robotic mitral valve surgery has grown with an increasing adoption in Europe as well. Increasing interest and surgical experience gained are stimulating further developments in the field and the full potential of robotic mitral valve surgery remains to be developed.

Abstract
Global cancer surgery is an essential and complex component of oncologic care. This study aims to describe global cancer surgery literature since the 2015 Lancet Commission on Global Surgery and Cancer Surgery and perform a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis. A systematic search was performed in PubMed of global cancer surgery articles. Themes were extracted from the included studies based on the following criteria: (1) performed in low- or low-middle-income countries, (2) published during or after 2015, (3) published in peer-reviewed journals, (4) written in the English language, and (5) accessible to the authors. Themes were further grouped into strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT analysis). The search strategy identified 154 articles published from 1992 to 2022. Forty-six articles were included in the qualitative synthesis and SWOT analysis. Recurring themes included local epidemiologic studies, local innovations and feasibility studies, prioritizing quality of life outcomes, multidisciplinary team approaches, limited resources, health system gaps, lack of economic analyses, diverse cancer management strategies and priorities, inter-setting collaboration, research expansion, the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, and unchecked technological advancements. These strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats were described and related to the themes of research, surgical systems strengthening, economics and financing, and political framing of the 2015 Lancet Commission on Global Cancer Surgery. SWOT analyses of global cancer surgery may be helpful in suggesting future strategies for this expanding field. PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY: Cancer surgery is a resource-intensive yet essential component of cancer care. In the face of projected growth of cancer burden, the present gap in cancer surgery care in low-resource settings with stressed health care and surgical infrastructure risks further exacerbation. We present a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats analysis of recent global cancer surgery literature pertaining to low-resource settings.
