Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Eating disorders, including food neophobia and restrictive eating behaviors, are pervasive among university students. This study evaluated the psychometric properties of the Nine-Item Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder Scale (NIAS), Düsseldorf Orthorexia Scale (DOS), Night Eating Syndrome Questionnaire (NESQ), Zung's Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), and Perceived Stress Scale (PSS) among university students in China and Pakistan to assess reliability and validity and explore the relationships between eating behaviors and mental health. METHODS Initially, responses from 1056 university students from China and Pakistan were obtained, which were reduced to 1002 after screening. Sociodemographic data were collected. Descriptive statistics, reliability analysis, and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were performed using SPSS and Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS). RESULTS The demographic data showed that 52% of the participants were female and 48% were male, with a mean age of 22.13 ± 3.86 years. Most were single (93.2%) and had a mean BMI of 22.06 ± 4.02 kg/m2. The NIAS showed high internal consistency (Cronbach's Alpha: 0.731), and the CFA revealed strong factor loadings (0.57-0.79). The DOS showed good psychometric properties (factor loadings: 0.53-0.77). The NESQ indicated higher night eating behaviors in Chinese students, who also had higher stress (PSS: Mean Difference = 4.116, 95% CI: 3.36-4.87) and depression (SDS: Mean Difference = 0.229, 95% CI: 0.19-0.27) compared to Pakistani students, who showed more restrictive eating behaviors (NIAS: Mean Difference = -0.422, 95% CI: -0.51 to -0.33). CONCLUSIONS The psychometric evaluation demonstrated strong reliability and validity in assessing eating behaviors and mental health among university students in China and Pakistan. These findings highlight cultural differences, with Chinese students showing higher levels of stress and depression and Pakistani students exhibiting more restrictive eating behaviors. These results suggest the need for culturally tailored interventions to address food-related mental health issues and improve students' well-being.

Abstract
Limited research has examined the effect of meal composition on sleep. Based on previous research, we hypothesized that a low glycemic index (LGI) drink containing 50 g isomaltulose (Palatinose, GI = 32) would result in more N3 sleep, less rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, and better memory consolidation than a high glycemic index (HGI) drink containing 50 g glucose (GI = 100). Healthy males (n = 20) attended the laboratory on three occasions at least a week apart (one acclimatization night and two test nights). Using a repeated measures, randomized, double-blind design, participants consumed a standardized evening meal followed four hours later by a HGI or LGI drink. Sleep architecture and continuity were assessed using polysomnography. Procedural and episodic memory were assessed pre- and post-sleep using a finger tapping task and story recall task, respectively. There was no main effect of drink. However, there was an interaction between drink and drink order. N3 sleep percentage was significantly longer (28.71% vs 23.99%, respectively, p = .032) and overnight retention of neutral story content was significantly better (0.63 words vs -10.13 words, respectively, p = .002) after the LGI drink than HGI drink, but only when the LGI drink was consumed on the second test night and HGI drink on the first test night. No changes in REM sleep were observed. Findings suggest that the nature of carbohydrate consumed before bed may influence sleep quality and quantity and neutral episodic memory consolidation. Pre-registered with ClinicalTrials.gov (NCT05591573).

Abstract
Reminiscence theatre (RT), an applied drama technique, is an effective tool for improving health-related outcomes for older adults in clinical settings. However, no research has explored the potential for a food-themed RT intervention to improve the nutrition, health and wellbeing of this population. Therefore, the current study explored the feasibility and acceptability of such an intervention - the CURTAIN intervention - in residential care-homes. Two care-homes, their residents and staff were recruited to a cluster randomised crossover feasibility study with post-hoc interviews. Over two months, participants (n = 42) took part in the CURTAIN activity and a control activity before consuming their lunch, with momentary hunger, activity/meal enjoyment, and food intake measured around each activity. Continuation to a full-scale trial was assessed against progression criteria for data-collection-sheet completion and residents' enjoyment of the intervention. The intervention was highly enjoyed by residents (median score = 8/10), with only 1% of data-collection cells blank. Attrition rate was 5% and preliminary data suggest CURTAIN has the potential to improve residents' appetite and energy intake. Aspects of evaluation design and recruitment strategy to optimise sample diversity require some amendments; however, overall, the CURTAIN intervention is feasible and acceptable to care-home residents and staff, and a full intervention evaluation is warranted.

Abstract
A healthy diet is a key determinant of successful aging. However, the psychological, social, and physiological changes associated with ageing often disrupt dietary behaviours. Hungary has one of the highest rates of chronic age-related diseases in the European Union, exacerbated by unhealthy dietary patterns and rapid population aging. This study evaluates attitudes and barriers to healthy eating among older adults in a socioeconomically disadvantaged region of Hungary, identifying determinants of these attitudes across different age groups. A cross-sectional survey sampled 678 adults aged 18 and older from Northeast Hungary, assessing their beliefs on healthy eating through an attitude score (range: 9-45). Multivariate regression analyses were conducted to explore relationships between mental health, self-perceived health, and attitudes toward healthy eating. The mean attitude score was 31.47 (± 5.14), with older adults (≥ 65 years) showing significantly greater uncertainty about dietary choices. The cost of healthy food was the most frequently reported barrier, regardless of age. Regression results revealed that older adults with higher well-being (B = 0.03, p = 0.026), life satisfaction (B = 0.40, p = 0.005), and self-perceived health (fair: B = 2.20, p = 0.003; good/very good: B = 1.96, p = 0.031) were more likely to have positive attitudes toward healthy eating. These results emphasize the importance of addressing both mental and physical health in educational interventions to promote healthier diets. Tailored approaches addressing affordability and accessibility of healthy foods are critical to advancing Hungary's National Healthy Aging Program and mitigating dietary risk factors among vulnerable populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study qualitatively investigates retirement-age adults' perspectives on engaging in health behaviors such as physical activity or a healthy diet, distinguishing facilitators, barriers, goals, and motivations (the two later in line with Self-Determination Theory). METHODS Two clinical psychologists conducted four focus groups with Spanish adults around retirement age. We conducted inductive and deductive content analysis. RESULTS The main facilitators and barriers identified were the presence and absence of social support/social network, mental health, willpower, time, and motivation. Participants reported different types of motivation (e.g., intrinsic motivation in the enjoyment of the activity of exercise or cooking) and goals (intrinsic and extrinsic); except for the goal of health management, which presented both types of motivation, participants regulated intrinsic goals autonomously, and extrinsic ones with controlled motivation. A process of internalizing the source of motivation was identified inductively by participants. CONCLUSIONS Facilitating social networks and addressing mental health issues could aid engagement in health behaviors among this population. Additionally, health management appeared as a significant goal, where autonomous motivation can develop even if the behavior initially arises from controlled motivation or external triggers, such as medical advice.

Abstract
This study's objective was to develop desirable, safe, and nutritious dairy-rich breakfasts and desserts for older adults while identifying the influence of comfort, nostalgia, and texture preferences. Participants (n = 81, mean age = 71 ± 7.3 years) evaluated two breakfast meals (meat-containing, vegetarian) and two desserts (chocolate, vanilla puddings) for acceptance; they also answered inquiries concerning texture preferences and reported their feelings of comfort and nostalgia experienced during evaluation. Mean participant liking was 6.2 for the meat breakfast, 5.7 for the vegetarian breakfast, 5.8 for the chocolate pudding, and 4.3 for the vanilla dessert (along a 9-point scale). Meal liking was mediated by flavor intensity, sweetness intensity, and texture preference. Texture preference results indicated that older adults both like and are comfortable with orally handling textures typically deemed concerning for this population. Liking of the meals also increased if a higher experience of comfort was elicited during meal consumption (p < 0.05); perceived comfort decreased if there was insufficient flavor. Increased nostalgia experienced during meal consumption also increased overall liking. This study provided guidance on acceptable textures for potential product development while highlighting the importance of understanding the perception of nostalgia and comfort for older adults' meal acceptance. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Focusing on older adults, this study showed that nostalgia, comfort, and texture variety are all important elements of an older adult's diet. This research is useful for product developers who can use these elements in designing and testing the acceptance and healthfulness of prepared meals by older adults.

Abstract
Background: Studies on the effectiveness of community-based health interventions (CBHIs) in improving lifestyle practices among older adults are limited. Objectives: This study evaluated the impact of a CBHI on health knowledge, lifestyle goal attainment, and practices among older adults in Singapore. Methods: Older adults (aged ≥60 years) were recruited from 29 senior recreation centres to participate in the "Wise and Well" programme, a 3-month CBHI designed to empower individuals to make healthier lifestyle choices. Pre- and post-programme assessments of health knowledge, goal attainment, and lifestyle behaviours (dietary practices and physical activity levels) were conducted using a health knowledge questionnaire, Goal Attainment Scaling (GAS), the Modified Dietary Practice Questionnaire (DPQ), and the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ), respectively. Statistical analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank and McNemar's tests (α = 0.05). Results: The study comprised 464 participants (mean age 73.1 years [SD 7.6]; 75.9% women). Three months post-program, participants showed significantly increased health knowledge (p < 0.001) and improved lifestyle goal attainment (p < 0.001). Additionally, there was a significant increase in the proportion of participants meeting or exceeding fruit (p < 0.001) and vegetable (p = 0.002) intake recommendations and reductions in sugar-sweetened beverage consumption (p = 0.002). However, no significant changes were observed in fried food consumption or physical activity levels. High health knowledge scores were associated with 2.17 (95% confidence interval 1.02,4.64) times greater odds of increased vegetable intake. Conclusions: The CBHI shows potential as an effective approach to improving health knowledge and enhancing lifestyle goals and practices among older adults.

Abstract
Foodborne disease presents a significant public health issue, costing the UK economy £9 billion annually, with many incidences being due to food-related behaviours in the home. Adults aged 60 and over account for around a quarter of the population in England and Wales and are at a greater risk of foodborne disease and may suffer a much higher burden. Research into risky food behaviours has previously focused on larger cohorts and typically treats the over 60's as one homogenous group. The current paper aims to identify the characteristics associated with risky food-related practices related to cooking, cleaning, chilling, cross-contamination, and use-by date adherence. The current research analysed data from the Official Statistics survey, Food and You 2: Wave 6 (2022-23). A series of binary logistic regression models examined the characteristics associated with risky food-related practices. We demonstrate that the characteristics associated with risky behaviours are not uniform, with different factors being associated with specific behaviours. We suggest that risky behaviours cannot be targeted efficiently with a one size fits all approach. This research provides an evidence base for policy makers to target risky food behaviours in this understudied vulnerable group.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Demographic change is leading to an increasing proportion of older people in the German population and requires new approaches for prevention and rehabilitation to promote the independence and health of older people. Technical assistance systems can offer a promising solution for the early detection of nutritional and physical deficits and the initiation of appropriate interventions. Such a system should combine different components, such as devices for assessing physical and nutritional status, educational elements on these topics, and training and feedback options. The concept is that the whole system can be used independently by older adults (aged ≥70 years) for monitoring and early detection of problems in nutrition or physical function, as well as providing opportunities for intervention. OBJECTIVE This study aims to develop technical and digital elements for a measurement and training station (MuTs) with an associated app. Through focus group discussions, target group requirements, barriers, and favorable components for such a system were identified. METHODS Older adults (aged ≥70 years) were recruited from a community-based setting as well as from a geriatric rehabilitation center. Focus group interviews were conducted between August and November 2022. Following a semistructured interview guideline, attitudes, requirements, preferences, and barriers for the MuTs were discussed. Discussions were stimulated by videos, demonstrations of measuring devices, and participants' ratings of the content presented using rankings. After conducting 1 focus group in the rehabilitation center and 2 in the community, the interview guide was refined, making a more detailed discussion of identified elements and aspects possible. The interviews were recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using content analysis. RESULTS A total of 21 older adults (female participants: n=11, 52%; mean age 78.5, SD 4.6 years) participated in 5 focus group discussions. There was a strong interest in the independent measurement of health parameters, such as pulse and hand grip strength, especially among people with health problems who would welcome feedback on their health development. Participants emphasized the importance of personal guidance and interaction before using the device, as well as the need for feedback mechanisms and personalized training for everyday use. Balance and coordination were mentioned as preferred training areas in a MuTs. New training options that motivate and invite people to participate could increase willingness to use the MuTs. CONCLUSIONS The target group is generally open and interested in tracking and optimizing diet and physical activity. A general willingness to use a MuTs independently was identified, as well as a compelling need for guidance and feedback on measurement and training to be part of the station.

Abstract
Norway's population of older, first-generation immigrants is expected to almost triple by the year 2060 due to decreased mortality and continued immigration. Studies indicate that older immigrants in Norway have a higher rate of non-communicable disease than older non-immigrants. Eating a health-supporting diet is important for reducing disease risk and maintaining independence in older adults. The purpose of this study was to increase understanding of the eating preferences and behaviors of older, home-dwelling, first-generation immigrants in Oslo, and to identify influences on their eating preferences and behaviors. This qualitative study took a phenomenological approach to understand older immigrants' shared experience of changing eating behaviors with aging. Fourteen home-dwelling, older immigrants were recruited using a combination of purposeful random sampling and snowball sampling. In-depth interviews were conducted then analyzed according to reflexive thematic analysis. Study findings indicate that older immigrants eat a bi-cultural diet pattern. In addition, they seek out information about nutrition, and incorporate many health-supporting eating habits for disease management and prevention. In this way, older immigrants in Oslo share much in common with older non-immigrants. Hopes and worries for the future motivate older immigrants to eat more healthfully in order to maintain independence and cultural identity as long as possible. These results can be useful for designing culturally tailored programs which support eating habits for health maintenance and disease prevention among older immigrants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A new diagnostic criterion for malnutrition, the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) criteria, has been proposed. Despite a recognized link between malnutrition and oral health, further clarification is needed regarding this association when using the GLIM criteria. This study examined the association between malnutrition and oral health in community-dwelling older adults aged ≥ 85. METHODS This study was conducted using data from the Tokyo Oldest Old Survey on Total Health study, and altogether 519 participants ≥ 85 years were enrolled. Malnutrition was assessed using the GLIM criteria. Oral health information, on the number of teeth, maximum occlusal force (MOF), saliva production, denture-related questions (dissatisfaction and frequency of use), dental visit history in the past year, whether participants enjoyed meals, and oral-related quality of life was assessed using the Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index (GOHAI) were collected. MOF was assessed the average values of three measurements and lower tertile by sex as decline in MOF. For GOHAI, the score for each items (Q1-Q12) was also evaluated, and further, the decline in each item (score: 1-2 points on a 5-point scale) was assessed as a "problem with each items." Oral health factors differing between those with and without malnutrition were analyzed. For differing items, malnutrition risk was evaluated using Cox regression. RESULTS Eighty-nine (17.1%) participants experienced malnutrition. Significant differences were observed in the decline in MOF, enjoyment of meals, individual scores for Q2, Q4, and Q6, and the problem with Q3, Q6, Q7, and Q11. Cox regression analysis showed that decline in MOF (odds ratio [OR]: 1.728, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.010-2.959), enjoyment of meals (OR: 0.502, 95% CI: 0.289-0.873), problem with Q3 (OR: 5.474, 95% CI: 1.301-23.028), Q6 (OR: 5.325, 95% CI: 1.026-27.636), and Q7 (OR: 2.867, 95% CI: 1.397-5.882) were associated with ORs of malnutrition. CONCLUSION Decline in MOF, enjoyment of meals, swallowing problem (problem with Q3), limit contact due to oral condition (problem with Q6), and esthetics problem (problem with Q7) were associated with malnutrition as assessed using the GLIM criteria.

Abstract
Malnutrition is a growing public health problem leading to increased morbidity and mortality worldwide. Up to 50% of elderly patients are hospitalized due to this condition. In this review, we focused on analyzing the current diagnostic criteria for malnutrition among the elderly population and proposing promising solutions. Currently used diagnostic methods such as BMI or serum albumin levels are not sufficient to indicate malnutrition, which is affected by many factors, including the number of chronic diseases, multiple medications taken, or physical condition. Moreover, current recommendations are inadequate because they fail to account for various factors such as chronic illnesses, multiple medications, and bodily changes that are crucial in diagnostic evaluations. There is a noticeable gap between these recommendations and actual clinical practice. Nevertheless, developing more precise, non-invasive biomarkers and personalized nutrition strategies has to be explored. One of these strategies we discuss in our review is multidisciplinary approaches that combine nutrition, physical activity, and psychosocial support. Addressing malnutrition among the elderly should rely on standardized protocols and personalized interventions to enhance their nutritional health and overall well-being.

Abstract
Promoting healthy snacking is important in addressing malnutrition, overweight and obesity among an ageing population. However, little is known about the factors underlying snacking behaviour in older adults. The present study aimed to explore within- and between-person associations between determinants (i.e. intention, visibility of snacks, social modelling and emotions) and snacking behaviours (i.e. decision to snack, health factor of the snack and portion size) in older adults (60+). Conducting a two-part intensive longitudinal design, data were analysed from forty-eight healthy older adults consisting of (1) an event-based self-report ecological momentary assessment (EMA) diary every time they had a snack and (2) a time-based EMA questionnaire on their phone five times per day. Analysis through generalised linear mixed models indicated that higher intention to snack healthily leads to healthier snacking while higher levels of social modelling and cheerfulness promote unhealthier choices within individuals. At the between-person level, similar results were found for intention and social modelling. Visibility of a snack increased portion size at both a within- and between-person level, while the intention to eat a healthy snack only increased portion size at the between-person level. No associations were found between the decision to snack and all determinants. This is the first study to investigate both within- and between-person associations between time-varying determinants and snacking in older adults. Such information holds the potential for incorporation into just-in-time adaptive interventions, allowing for personalised tailoring, more effective promotion of healthier snacking behaviours and thus pursuing the challenge of healthy ageing.

Abstract
Older adults face a decline in the quality of their diet, which affects their health. The prevalence of DM2 is increasing, as are the associated complications. Effective nutrition education and mobile health (mHealth) interventions offer a viable solution in the scenario of the widespread use of mobile devices. This study aimed to develop and validate messages for a mobile application aimed at older adult Brazilians with DM2 who receive care at the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS). The educational messages on healthy eating for older adults with DM2 were created from 189 excerpts selected from Brazilian official documents. A total of 37 messages were created, categorized into 20 educational, 12 motivational, and 5 congratulatory, all up to 120 characters. Twenty-one experts validated the messages for clarity and relevance, and 11 messages had to be revised to meet the criteria. Subsequently, the 36 messages approved by the experts were tested on a sample of 57 older adults, guaranteeing clarity rates of over 80%. This study developed and validated 36 messages for a mobile health app aimed at older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus in Brazil. Expert evaluation ensured clarity and relevance, confirmed by older adult participants who evaluated clarity. This research highlights the potential of mHealth to overcome barriers to accessing healthcare in the SUS, emphasizing personalized interventions for the effective management of older adults' health.

Abstract
Malnutrition affects approximately one quarter of UK adults aged 65 years and over. As the global demographic shift continues, malnutrition is expected to increase. Oral nutritional supplements (ONS) are used both to prevent and to treat malnutrition. However, their effectiveness is compromised by poor adherence, and it is not well understood what contributes to this. Therefore, the current research was designed to explore ONS adherence from the parallel perspectives of ONS as a prescribed "medication" and as a food supplement/substitute. Eighteen older adults (13F, 5M; mean age = 73.4 yr; range: 70-80 yr) participated in focus groups (three in-person and one online), to investigate experiences of taking prescribed medications, including dietary supplements, and what should be factors to consider in supporting regular intake of ONS for trial development, as well as any potential improvements to products. Focus group sessions were recorded and then transcribed. Thematic Analysis was applied to the transcripts by the first author, and themes were discussed in depth, using exemplar quotes from participants. Five dominant themes were identified from the data: Disgust, Palatability and Acceptance; End-of-Life Care; Resistance to Medicines; Rituals and Reminders; and Real Food Displacement. Nutritional supplements were characterised as "disgusting", "manufactured", and associated with serious, chronic illness, as well as end-of-life care, in contrast to probiotics which were linked with health and wellness. The sweet taste of ONS was identified as a barrier to intake, given that it is generally associated with a signal to stop eating, and low hunger. As a group, participants tried to "avoid taking medicines", and viewed the need to have them negatively, yet most regularly took prescribed medication and/or vitamin supplements. Participants identified several, rituals and reminders to take medicines, including meal-based, or time-of-day-based prompts (e.g., before, with or after meals). To improve adherence, savoury products were suggested, as well as a more person-centred approach to individual nutritional needs and preferences. Overall, the group discussion mainly identified barriers to intake, but that improving taste, adding to "real food" (not replacing meals), and offering variety of flavour and form (e.g., savoury soups as well as sweet drinks) could be included in future trials to improve appeal and therefore intake. Future work should continue to explore how best to formulate, market and/or prescribe ONS, and how this might vary for malnutrition prevention vs treatment strategies.

Abstract
Research suggests that as we age, protein intake, recognised as vital for combating negative health outcomes, consistently falls below recommendations in older adults. Decreased food intake, combined with age-related eating complications is a major determinant of this protein undernutrition. If nutritional interventions are to be effective and sustainable, they must enable eating pleasure, cater for personal preferences and be adaptable to different eating patterns. As such, we aimed to identify successful strategies for at-home protein-fortification to empower older adults to take a personalised approach to their nutrition, without requiring a large behavioural change. To explore healthy older adults' (age 70+) acceptability and preferences for at-home protein fortification, European project Fortiphy led discussions with older adults (n = 37) and caregivers of older adults (n = 15) to develop high-protein recipes, which were then utilised in a home-use trial with healthy older adults (n = 158). Each fortified recipe was paired with a questionnaire to rate the ease of preparation and liking, and an end-of-study questionnaire was provided to capture overall opinions and preferences. The uniqueness of this study is that the protein fortified recipes were prepared and tested by older adults themselves, in their own homes. Findings showed that older adults were unaware of the importance of protein in ageing and did not have a desire to fortify their foods at present. Yet, they were positive regarding the concept and highlighted the importance of taste, familiar ingredients, and preferred preparation methods. Cultural preferences across countries were identified as having the most influence on the liking of fortified meals. This study also indicated a need for increased awareness of protein requirements to influence the motivation to use fortification.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Disease-related malnutrition after a hospital stay has major consequences for older adults, the healthcare system and society. This study aims to develop and test the effectiveness of an educational video to prevent loss of health-related quality of life among live-at-home older adults after surgical treatment in a hospital. METHOD This randomised controlled trial will occur at a regional hospital in Norway. Participants will be live-at-home adults aged 65 years and older. They will be recruited from three different surgical departments after a surgical procedure. Individuals with a body mass index below 24 and a home address in one of nine selected municipalities will be eligible for inclusion. Participants will be randomly assigned to either the intervention group or the control group. Those assigned to the intervention group will obtain access to a 6-min educational video 5 days after being discharged from the hospital. The control group will not obtain access to the video. The primary outcome will be health-related quality of life using the Norwegian Rand 36-Item Short Form Health Survey. Furthermore, we will measure body composition, number of readmissions and nutritional knowledge at inclusion and 3-month follow-up. DISCUSSION This randomised controlled trial is expected to provide insight into whether an educational video can improve the nutritional status of older adults following a surgical procedure and discharge from the hospital. The findings will be useful for assessing how videos offering nutritional advice to older adults who have undergone a surgical procedure can improve their health-related quality of life, reduce loss of function, prevent readmission to hospital and reduce healthcare costs. Abstract
Mealtimes are crucial markers of daily schedules and hold significant meaning for older adults in senior living facilities worldwide, extending beyond the food served. Utilizing Moustakas' transcendental phenomenological approach, this study explores the lived experiences and multifaceted meanings of mealtimes for older adults from multicultural backgrounds in senior living facilities in Malaysia. In six urban senior living facilities, 28 older adults from Malaysia's three major ethnic groups, namely Bumiputera Malays, Chinese, and Indians were interviewed through semi-structured one-on-one interviews. Five discernible themes beyond tangible aspects emerged: mealtimes as cultural bridges, memories and palate, emotional bonds through food, quality control and consumption, and comfort through personalized dining experience. This study raises awareness among senior-living facilitators, family caregivers, academics, and policymakers to acknowledge the evident complexities of mealtimes for older adults living away from the comfort of familiarity. Future research should consider the active involvement of all stakeholders in co-creating and implementing interventions that enhance older adults' mealtime experiences in senior-friendly establishments.

Abstract
The anorexia of aging is a widespread problem amongst older people, particularly in the hospital setting with up to 60% affected. Despite its high prevalence anorexia often goes undiagnosed in hospital, due to a lack of standardized assessment and evidence-based management, but also lack of knowledge regarding consequences. This review summarizes current evidence for anorexia of aging specific to the hospital setting, giving an overview of correlates of appetite in hospital and consequences of anorexia. It highlights an overall scarcity of research on this important clinical problem for hospitalized cohorts. The few studies point to the importance of anorexia of aging in major health burdens for older people, namely malnutrition, sarcopenia and reduced physical performance, as well as higher mortality. Further research is needed to assess temporal sequence in pathways of causality and to develop effective interventions to combat anorexia.

Abstract
Objectives With the acceleration of an aging society, the prevalence of age-related chronic diseases such as physical frailty and sarcopenia is gradually increasing with numerous adverse effects. Dietary nutrition is an important modifiable risk factor for the management of physical frailty and sarcopenia, but there are many complex influences on its implementation in community settings. This study aimed to summarize the facilitators and barriers to the implementation of dietary nutrition interventions for community-dwelling older adults with physical frailty and sarcopenia, and to provide a reference for the formulation of relevant health management programs. Methods Searches were conducted in databases including PubMed, Web of Science, Medline (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), and Cochrane Library from inception to January 2023. Searches were completed for a combination of MeSH terms and free terms. The Critical Appraisal Skills Program (CASP) instrument was used to appraise quality. Coding and analysis of the extracted information were performed using the socio-ecological modeling framework. The study protocol for this review was registered on the PROSPERO ( CRD42022381339). Results A total of 10 studies were included. Of these, four were nutrition-only focused interventions, and six were dietary nutrition and exercise interventions. The facilitators and barriers were summarized based on the socio-ecological model that emerged at three levels: individual trait level, external environment level, and intervention-related level, containing ten subthemes. Conclusion Individual internal motivation and external support should be integrated with the implementation of diet- and nutrition-related interventions in community-living aged people with physical frailty and sarcopenia. Develop "tailored" interventions for participants and maximize available human and physical resources.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to explore older adults' and healthcare professionals' (HCPs) perceptions of dietary influences and food preferences in older age. METHODS The research design was phenomenological qualitative description. Semistructured one-to-one interviews and focus groups were held separately with community-dwelling older adults and HCPs involved in care of the older person in Ireland. Data were analysed using inductive thematic analysis. RESULTS A total of 47 adults aged 55+ years were recruited (50% male; 49% aged 60-69 years; 28% aged above 70 years), and 26 HCPs were involved, comprising dietitians (n = 8); geriatricians (n = 6); clinical therapists (n = 4); and nurses, pharmacists, catering managers and meal delivery service coordinators (n = 2 each). There are strong desires for 'good, honest food' within the diet for an older person; however, gaps in current nutrition priorities, dietary guidance and health promotion were perceived. There were differences in the perspectives held by HCPs and adults aged 55+ years, as some HCPs centred their discussion around nutrition for preventing sarcopenia, frailty or cognitive decline, whereas many adults aged 55+ years desired foods which promote cardiometabolic health and reflect wider personal health and environmental values. Other themes included the impact of health and lifestyle changes accompanying ageing on dietary priorities, the importance of personal and psychosocial values in determining food choice and the impact of the external food environment on accessibility and shopping experiences. CONCLUSIONS Influences on dietary choice for the older person are multifactorial, driven by a range of health, psychological, sociocultural and environmental perspectives. Future nutrition priorities for older adults should encourage health-promoting approaches and not just disease-mitigating efforts.

Abstract
AIM This study aimed to develop a ward nurses' dietary support scale, including physical, psychological, and social background factors in preparation for older adult patients' life after discharge. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study using a self-reported questionnaire. Scale items were created based on a conceptual analysis, and refined by a Delphi survey. In total, 696 nurses across 16 acute care hospitals in Japan were eligible to participate. The questionnaire comprised 51 items that used a five-point Likert-type scale. These items were evaluated using exploratory factor analysis. Reliability was evaluated using Cronbach's alpha and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC). Pearson's correlation coefficients were calculated to determine concurrent validity, and construct validity was analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis. RESULTS Altogether, 241 surveys were included in the data analysis; 236 nurses participated in both the test and the retest. The exploratory factor analysis identified 20 items from three factors as follows: "Assessment for healthy eating behavior," "Adjustment of the living environment, including family and caregiver, together with other professions," and "Continual frailty assessment." In the confirmatory factor analysis, the fitness indices supported these results. Cronbach's alpha was 0.932 and ICC was 0.867 for the overall scale. In the concurrent validity, the three factors had a moderate correlation (r = 0.295-0.537, P < .01 and r = 0.254-0.648, P < .01), except for one subscale. CONCLUSIONS We developed a ward nurses' dietary support scale, including physical, psychological, and social background factors in preparation for older adult patients' life after discharge. Its reliability and validity were confirmed.

Abstract
Introduction Older adults are a highly heterogeneous population, as individuals of the same age can show considerable variations in personal characteristics and living conditions. Risk and protective factors for older adults' subjective wellbeing during the COVID-19 pandemic can be explored by examining how life satisfaction, food-related life satisfaction, and associated variables coexist among these individuals. On this basis, this study aimed to identify older adult profiles based on their levels of life and food-related life satisfaction; to characterize these profiles by diet quality, social support, financial wellbeing, and sociodemographic characteristics; and to identify variables associated with higher life and food-related life satisfaction. Methods The sample included 1,371 institutionalized and non-institutionalized individuals over the age of 60, from four cities in Chile. Participants answered a survey, either online or face to face, with questions about life and food-related life satisfaction, perceived social support from family, friends, and others, food quality, financial wellbeing/distress, sociodemographic characteristics, and prior COVID-19 infection. Results Using a latent profile analysis, we identified three profiles of older adults: Profile 1: Unsatisfied with their life, somewhat satisfied with their food-related life (5.40%); Profile 2: Somewhat satisfied with their life, satisfied with their food-related life (65.06%); Profile 3: Extremely satisfied with their life and food-related life (29.54%). Profiles differed by residence (institutionalized vs. independent), age, marital status, social support, financial wellbeing, COVID-19 infection, and city of residence. Discussion The patterns of association between life and food-related satisfaction and related variables indicate conditions of vulnerability and protection related to living conditions, the social dimensions of food consumption, and social support. These results underscore the need for identifying groups of older adults based on diverse characteristics and conditions outside of chronological age.

Abstract
Malnutrition is a highly prevalent condition in older adults, and poses a substantial burden on health, social, and aged-care systems. Older adults are vulnerable to malnutrition due to age-related physiological decline, reduced access to nutritious food, and comorbidity. Clinical guidelines recommend routine screening for malnutrition in all older adults, together with nutritional assessment and individually tailored nutritional support for older adults with a positive screening test. Nutritional support includes offering individualised nutritional advice and counselling; oral nutritional supplements; fortified foods; and enteral or parenteral nutrition as required. However, in clinical practice, the incorporation of nutritional guidelines is inadequate and low-value care is commonplace. This Review discusses the current evidence on identification and treatment of malnutrition in older adults, identifies gaps between evidence and practice in clinical care, and offers practical strategies to translate evidence-based knowledge into improved nutritional care. We also provide an overview of the prevalence, causes, and risk factors of malnutrition in older adults across health-care settings.

Abstract
(1) Background: Obesity and its comorbidities can cause burdens and limitations. Bariatric surgery (BS) is indicated as a safe procedure to reduce body mass and improve present comorbidities. However, several complications were reported, such as vitamin D [25(OH)D] deficiency. We evaluated if 25(OH)D serum levels relate to clinical characteristics, symptoms, or habits in women after their BS, and whether the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene's TaqI and FokI polymorphisms affected 25(OH)D levels and the total body bone mineral density (TBBMD). (2) Methods: This cohort cross-sectional comparative analytical prospective study consisted of 27 women, 61.6 ± 5.0 years, submitted to BS one year prior at a public reference hospital, DF-Brazil. All participants were asked to follow the physical and dietary activity recommendations and received vitamin D3 supplements. Their anthropometric, biochemical, and immunological measurements and blood samples were obtained. (3) Results: 73.3% of participants had low 25(OH)D levels, and their levels correlated positively with TBBMD and negatively with systolic pressure. VDR TaqI did not affect 25(OH)D levels, whereas VDR FokI's allele f presence correlated to a median rise in 25(OH)D levels. Neither polymorphism correlated to TBBMD. (4) Conclusions: 25(OH)D levels were positively correlated with TBBMD, negatively with systolic blood pressure, and were higher in those with the VDR FokI allele f.
