Abstract
This article provides a detailed discussion of the evidence available to date on the application of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and supervised classification methods for the individual reassignment of commingled bone remains. Specialized bone chemistry studies have demonstrated the suitability of bone elemental composition as a distinct individual identifier. Given the widely documented ability of the LIBS technique to provide elemental emission spectra that are considered elemental fingerprints of the samples analyzed, the analytical potential of this technique has been assessed for the investigation of the contexts of commingled bone remains for their individual reassignment. The LIBS bone analysis consists of the direct ablation of micrometric portions of bone samples, either on their surface or within their internal structure. To produce reliable, accurate, and robust bone classifications, however, the available evidence suggests that LIBS spectral information must be processed by appropriate methods. When comparing the performance of seven different supervised classification methods using spectrochemical LIBS data for individual reassociation, those employing artificial intelligence-based algorithms produce analytically conclusive results, concretely individual reassociations with 100% accuracy, sensitivity, and robustness. Compared to LIBS, other techniques used for the purpose of interest exhibit limited performance in terms of robustness, sensitivity, and accuracy, as well as variations in these results depending on the type of bones used in the classification. The available literature supports the suitability of the LIBS technique for reliable individual reassociation of bone remains in a fast, simple, and cost-effective manner without the need for complicated sample processing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aimed to investigate the association between the serum-creatinine-to-cystatin C-to-waist-circumference (CCR/WC) ratio with lung function and severe airflow limitation (SAL). METHODS The data were derived from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Peak expiratory flow (PEF) was used as a measure of lung function parameter. Logistic and linear regression were utilized separately to evaluate the relationship between the CCR/WC ratio with PEF and SAL in baseline. Restricted cubic spline was used to explore potential non-linear associations between the CCR/WC ratio and SAL. Cox proportional-hazards models were used to assess the association between CCR/WC quartiles and the risk of new-onset SAL. RESULTS A total of 6105 participants were included. This study revealed a positive association between the CCR/WC ratio and lung function (PEF: β [partial coefficient]: 25.95, 95%CI: 12.72 to 39.18, p < 0.001; PEF/PEF prediction: β = 0.08, 95%CI: 0.05 to 0.12, p < 0.001) and an inverse association relationship with SAL (OR [odds ratio]: 0.64, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.47 to 0.85, p = 0.003). Subgroup analysis showed a significant association between the CCR/WC ratio and SAL in males (OR: 0.58, 95% CI: 0.37 to 0.90, p = 0.017) but not in females (p = 0.059). Cox regression analysis revealed a decreased risk of SAL in the quartiles (Q2-4) compared to the first quartile of the CCR/WC ratio (hazard ratios [HRs]: 0.49 to 0.73, all p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS This study highlights a positive association between the CCR/WC ratio and lung function, with a potential protective effect against SAL.

Abstract
Exercise is an essential component of any good health style, being particularly important for older adults to counteract the effects of aging, including sarcopenia and osteoporosis, which can result in lower fall probability. Exercise programs for older adults are especially designed for that population. A rigorous evaluation of those programs is necessary to assure most benefit is achieved. Serum biomarkers of proteins intrinsic to musculoskeletal homeostasis could contribute objectively to the assessment of the benefits of exercise. In this work, in addition to the usual physical fitness and balance tests, ELISA assays quantified the serum levels of six proteins and one polysaccharide important for the homeostasis of muscle (troponin T and alpha-actinin), tendon/ligament (tenomodulin), cartilage (cartilage oligomeric matrix protein and hyaluronan) and bone (osteocalcin and sclerostin), before and after 8 weeks of an exercise program tailored to older adults, Stay Strong Stay Healthy, offered at a Community Center and at an Independent Senior Living facility. Statistical significance was determined by non-parametric tests (Wilcoxon Signed Ranks and Mann-Whitney U). Physical fitness and balance improved as expected along with a significant decrease in sclerostin, pointing to less inhibition of bone deposition. However, when considering each type of dwelling separately, older adults always saw a significant decrease of the isoform of troponin T associated with fast-twitch muscles, suggesting that daily levels of physical activity may also have a role in the benefit of older adults from exercise.

Abstract
To assess the relationship between fat mass percentage (FMP) and glucose metabolism in children aged 0−18 years we performed a systematic review of the literature on Medline/PubMed, SinoMed, Embase and Cochrane Library using the PRISMA 2020 guidelines up to 12 October 2021 for observational studies that assessed the relationship of FMP and glucose metabolism. Twenty studies with 18,576 individuals were included in the meta-analysis. The results showed that FMP was significantly associated with fasting plasma glucose (FPG) (r = 0.08, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.04−0.13, p < 0.001), fasting plasma insulin (INS) (r = 0.48, 95% CI: 0.37−0.57, p < 0.001), and homeostasis model assessment (HOMA)- insulin resistance (IR) (r = 0.44, 95% CI: 0.33−0.53, p < 0.001). The subgroup analysis according to country or overweight and obesity indicated that these associations remained significant between FMP and INS or HOMA-IR. Our results demonstrated that there is a positive relationship between FMP and FPG. Moreover, subgroup analysis according to country or overweight and obesity indicated that FMP is significantly associated with INS and HOMA-IR. This is the first known systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the associations of FMP with glucose metabolism in children and adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Serum leptin levels reflects one's degree of obesity and can affect vitamin D levels. The relationship between body fat, leptin, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) has not been extensively studied in adolescents. This study aimed to investigate the correlations between body composition and leptin and 25(OH)D levels in boys and girls. METHODS Participants aged 12-14 years (n = 205) were grouped according to sex. After body composition was recorded using bioelectrical impedance analysis, they were classified into three groups according to body fat percentage (%BF) (< 30, ≥ 30 and < 40, and ≥ 40). Serum leptin and 25(OH)D levels were measured using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Correlations between all variables were analyzed according to sex and the percentage of BF groups. RESULTS Boys and girls with %BF ≥ 30 showed no difference in body mass index (BMI), %BF, and leptin and 25(OH)D, while other variables of body composition were more common in boys than in girls. The %BF, body fat mass (BFM), and 25(OH)D of both sexes with %BF ≥ 30, and leptin levels of boys with %BF ≥ 40 increased with an increase in %BF. A negative correlation between leptin and 25(OH)D levels was found in boys with %BF < 40 and girls with %BF < 30. In the %BF ≥ 30 and < 40 groups, there were negative correlations between leptin, BFM, free fat mass, and muscle mass (MM); between leptin, 25(OH)D, and height in boys; and between 25(OH)D, body weight, BMI, and MM in girls. CONCLUSION A negative correlation between leptin and 25(OH)D levels varied according to sex, while for body composition, it was evident at 30 and 40% BF.

Abstract
Osteocalcin, in its non-carboxylated form, has a positive effect on glucose metabolism. Additionally, osteocalcin levels are related to body composition, especially muscle mass. The relation to the distribution of different adipose tissue types, such as subcutaneous, intermuscular, and visceral adipose tissue, is unclear. This study aimed to investigate associations between serum osteocalcin and the distribution of subcutaneous and intermuscular adipose tissue of the mid-thigh. Furthermore, the influence of different training methods on osteocalcin levels was investigated. We performed adipose tissue quantification of subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) and intramuscular adipose tissue (IMAT) using MRI measurements of the mid-thigh in 128 volunteers (63 male/65 female). Laboratory analysis included blood lipid panel, serum insulin, adiponectin, and osteocalcin measurements. The main observation was a significant correlation of total serum osteocalcin (TOC) and the distribution of adipose tissue of the mid-thigh (SAT/(SAT + IMAT)) (cc = −0.29/p-value = 0.002), as well as the cross-sectional muscle area (MA), increasing with the weekly resistance training duration in males. Additionally, TOC (p-value = 0.01) and MA (p-value = 0.03) were negatively related to serum insulin. The significant relationship between TOC and SAT/(SAT + IMAT) is a new finding and confirms the negative influence of IMAT on glucose metabolism in a sex-specific approach. We could substantiate this by the negative relation of TOC with serum insulin.

Abstract
This study presents a disposable, novel, and sensitive biosensing system to determine adiponectin, an obesity biomarker, in real human serum. The graphite paper (GP) working electrode is a new material for impedimetric biosensors. In the literature, there is no study in which this electrode is used in impedance-based biosensors for adiponectin detection. Sensitive and useful techniques, such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry, were utilized for investigation of the modification of the GP electrode surface and optimization and characterization of the constructed biosensor. The single frequency impedance technique was used to study the interactions between antiadiponectin and adiponectin. The morphology of the electrode surface for each immobilization step was examined with scanning electron microscopy. All experimental parameters were optimized to fabricate a rapid and sensitive biosensing system. The designed biosensor presents excellent performance with a wide detection range (0.05-25 pg mL-1) and a low limit of detection (0.0033 pg mL-1) for adiponectin determination. Also, it has been demonstrated that the biosensor sensitively allows for the detection of adiponectin in human serum. The affinity of the designed immunosensor toward other proteins and components was examined in the presence of the target protein (adiponectin), leptin (100 pg mL-1), creatine kinase (50 pg mL-1), parathyroid hormone (50 pg mL-1), and d-glucose (0.5 M). The selectivity of the adiponectin biosensor resulted in high capacity to neglect the interference effect. The constructed biosensor showed good linearity, long-term storage life (10 weeks), high reusability (18 times regenerability), and high ability to detect adiponectin concentrations at picogram levels.
