Abstract
Maternal obesity poses a significant threat to the metabolic profiles of offspring. Microorganisms acquired from the mother early in life critically affect the host's metabolic functions. Natural non-nutritive sweeteners, particularly stevioside (STV), play a crucial role in reducing obesity and affecting gut microbiota composition. Based on this, we hypothesized that maternal STV supplementation could improve the health of mothers and offspring by altering their gut microbiota. Our study found that maternal STV supplementation reduced obesity during pregnancy, decreased abnormal lipid accumulation in offspring mice caused by maternal obesity, and modified the gut microbiota of both dams and offspring, notably increasing the abundance of Lactobacillus apodemi (L. apodemi). Co-housing and fecal microbiota transplant experiments confirmed that gut microbiota mediated the effects of STV on metabolic disorders. Furthermore, treatment with L. apodemi alone replicated the beneficial effects of STV, which were associated with increased thermogenesis. In summary, maternal STV supplementation could alleviate lipid metabolic disorders in offspring by enhancing L. apodemi levels and promoting thermogenic activity, potentially involving changes in bile acid metabolism pathways.

Abstract
Dietary fiber (DF) and polyphenols are both bioactive compounds with various health-promoting effects while close relationship between them aroused wide concern in recent years. Abundant polyphenols combine with DF and contribute greatly to its beneficial effects. Although efforts made to uncover such bound polyphenols (BPs) from different angles before, systematic overview of full aspects is deficient. Here, more details about polyphenols conjugated in DF reported recently were summarized systematically. Meanwhile, the disposition of BPs in gastrointestinal tract and their interaction with microbiome were introduced to clarify the foundation of their functions. Moreover, considering the great impacts of food processing on polyphenols, different technics used in food handling were introduced with their effects on BPs emphatically discussed to provide guideline for reasonable application of specific technics for given materials. Our work is supposed to promote the understanding of BPs in DF and facilitate their future exploitation and application as a whole.

Abstract
Autism spectrum disorder is a serious neurodevelopmental disorder whose early onset significantly affects an individual's social interactions and cognitive function. Recent research suggests that modulating the gut microbiota could be a potential intervention strategy for autism spectrum disorder symptoms. 2'-Fucosyllactose has been identified as a regulator of gut microbiota homeostasis, however, its effectiveness in addressing autism spectrum disorder remains unclear. In this study, the effects of daily supplementation of 2'-FL in 3-week-old male offspring mice for 5 weeks were examined. The results showed that 2'-fucosyllactose significantly improved autism spectrum disorder-like behavioral deficits. Furthermore, supplementation with 2'-fucosyllactose restored intestinal barrier integrity and increased relative abundance of beneficial gut bacteria, particularly Akkermansia and Bifidobacterium that are closely related to bile acid metabolism. Notably, 2'-fucosyllactose treatment elevated the content of bile acids and upregulated the expression of bile acid receptors in the brain. Co-housing experiments further confirmed the crucial role of gut microbiota in mediating the beneficial effects of 2'-fucosyllactose. Overall, this study suggests that 2'-fucosyllactose could alleviate maternal immune activation-induced behavioral deficits and neuroinflammation through the regulation of the gut-brain axis, offering potential therapeutic value.

Abstract
Maternal obesity increases the risk of metabolic disorders in offspring. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the transgenerational transmission of metabolic diseases is important for the metabolic health of future generations. More research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the associated risks and their clinical implications because of the inherently complex nature of transgenerational metabolic disease transmission. Diet is a well-recognized risk factor for the development of obesity and other metabolic diseases, and rational dietary interventions are potential therapeutic strategies for their prevention. Despite extensive research on the physiological effects of diet on health and its associated mechanisms, little work has been devoted to understanding the effects of early-life dietary interventions on the metabolic health of offspring. In addition, existing dietary interventions are insufficient to meet clinical needs. Here, we discuss the literature on the effects of maternal obesity on the metabolic health of offspring, focusing on the mechanisms underlying the transgenerational transmission of metabolic diseases. We revisit current dietary interventions and describe their strengths and weaknesses in ameliorating maternal obesity-induced metabolism-related disorders in offspring. We also propose innovative strategies, such as the use of precision nutrition and fecal microbiota transplantation, which may limit the vicious cycle of intergenerational metabolic disease transmission.

Abstract
A number of investigations have shown that gut microbiome influences humans' ability to communicate with others, and impairments in social interactions are linked to alterations in gut microbiome composition and diversity, via epigenetic mechanisms. This article reviews the links among gut microbiome, social behavior, and epigenetic shifts relevant to gut microbiome-derived metabolites. First, we discuss how different social determinants of health, such as socioeconomic status, diet, environmental chemicals, migration, ecological conditions, and seasonal changes may influence gut microbiome composition, diversity, and functionality, along with epigenetic alterations and thereby affect social behavior. Next, we consider how gut microbiome-derived metabolites, diet, probiotics, and fecal microbiome transplantation may reduce impairments in social interactions through the adjustment of epigenetic aberrations (e.g., DNA methylation, histone modifications, and microRNAs expression) which may suppress or increase gene expression patterns. Finally, we present the potential benefits and unresolved challenges with the use of gut microbiome-targeted therapeutics in reducing social deficits.

Abstract
Gut microbiota is essential for the function of peripherally-induced regulatory T (pTreg) cells. However, how commensal bacteria affect thymically derived fat-resident Treg cells that harbor a unique expression of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-γ and suppress inflammation in visceral adipose tissue (VAT), is not well defined. Here it is revealed that microbiota depletion causes a drastic decline in Treg cell population in VAT, particularly those expressing ST2 (ST2+ Treg), which are largely restored after gut microbiome reconstruction. Mechanistically, gut microbiota-derived butyrate increases VAT ST2+ Treg cells through binding PPARγ. Butyrate supplementation and high fiber diet increase VAT ST2+ Treg population in obese mice, and ameliorated glucose tolerance and visceral inflammation. Furthermore, human omental adipose Treg cells show positive correlation with fecal butyrate and certain butyrate-producing microbes. This study identifies the critical role of gut microbiota-butyrate-PPARγ axis in maintaining VAT Treg population, pinpointing a potential approach to augment VAT Treg population and ameliorate inflammation.

Abstract
Obesity is recognized as a global epidemic that can result in changes in the human body and metabolism. Accumulating evidence indicates that gut microbiota (GM) can affect the development of obesity. The GM not only plays a crucial role in digesting and absorbing nutrients, but also in maintaining the overall health of the host. Dietary supplements such as non-starch polysaccharides are mainly fermented by the GM in the colon. Recent findings suggest that shaping the GM through the prebiotic function of non-starch polysaccharides may be a viable strategy against obesity. In this paper, the effects of non-starch polysaccharides on host health, together with their prebiotic function influencing the GM to control obesity via the gut-target organ axis, are reviewed. Potential perspectives of non-starch polysaccharides exhibiting anti-obesity effects via the gut-target organ axis are proposed for future research. Graphical abstract

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nutrition is a key factor in cognitive function, and safe dietary interventions are promising to prevent cognitive impairment in pediatric psychiatric disorders. We previously demonstrated that childhood social isolation (SI) stress affects colonic function, leading to cognitive impairment. Cellulose, an insoluble dietary fiber, shows benefits to intestinal health, but its potential impact on cognitive impairment has not been explored. OBJECTIVES This study investigated whether a high-cellulose diet ameliorates cognitive impairment induced by SI through modulation of gut microbiota and metabolic pathways. METHODS C57BL/6J male mice (3 wk old; n = 10-15/group) were randomly divided into 2 groups: individually housed (SI) group and housed 5 mice per cage (group-housed) group. Each group received either a normal diet (5% cellulose) or a high-cellulose diet (30% cellulose) for 5 wk daily until the end of the behavioral testing. We evaluated behavior abnormalities, gut microbiota composition, and metabolites, and performed 2-way analysis of variance. RESULTS Intake of a high-cellulose diet ameliorated cognitive impairment, including decreased time spent in a novel location of SI mice in novel object location test (NOLT; +30%; P < 0.01) with reduction of Iba-1 positive cells, microglia, in the hippocampus (-33%; P < 0.05). The high-cellulose diet indicated a significant difference in gut microbiota clustering plots (P < 0.01) and enhanced the variation in malate-aspartate shuttle pathways in SI mice (P < 0.01). Notably, fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) from SI mice fed a high-cellulose diet after antibiotic treatment, replicated amelioration of cognitive impairment in NOLT (+46%; P < 0.01). Additionally, the FMT replicated a decrease of Iba-1 positive cells indicating suppressed hippocampal microglial activation (-52%; P < 0.01), and enhanced the variation in malate-aspartate shuttle pathways (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that a high-cellulose diet may ameliorate pediatric-specific cognitive impairment through modulation of the gut microbiota and metabolic pathways.

Abstract
Time-restricted feeding (TRF) holds promise for alleviating cognitive decline in aging, albeit the precise mechanism via the gut-brain axis remains elusive. In a clinical trial, we observed, for the first time, that a 4-month TRF ameliorated cognitive impairments among Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients. Experiments in 5xFAD mice corroborated the gut microbiota-dependent effect of TRF on mitigating cognitive dysfunction, amyloid-beta deposition, and neuroinflammation. Multi-omics integration linked Bifidobacterium pseudolongum (B. pseudolongum) and propionic acid (PA) with key genes in AD pathogenesis. Oral supplementation of B. pseudolongum or PA mimicked TRF's protective effects. Positron emission tomography imaging confirmed PA's blood-brain barrier penetration, while knockdown of the free fatty acid receptor 3 (FFAR3) diminished TRF's cognitive benefits. Notably, we observed a positive correlation between fecal PA and improved cognitive function in an AD cohort, further indicating that TRF enhanced PA production. These findings highlight the microbiota-metabolites-brain axis as pivotal in TRF's cognitive benefits, proposing B. pseudolongum or PA as potential AD therapies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The treatment for neuropathic pain (NP) remains challenging. Propionic acid (PA), derived from gut microbiota, is a promising therapeutic target for NP. However, the precise role of PA in NP is nebulous; further, whether Astaxanthin (AST), which exhibits analgesic properties, is involved in regulating PA in NP remains unknown. OBJECTIVE We explored the role of PA in NP development and whether AST relieves NP by modulating PA levels; further, we identified novel therapeutic strategies for NP. METHODS The L4 spinal nerve was ligated (SNL) to establish a mouse model of NP. The composition of the gut microbiota was analysed through 16S rRNA sequencing. PA in faeces, blood, and spinal cord were quantitatively measured using gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Network pharmacology was used to identify therapeutic targets of PA for NP. The interactions between PA and its targets were analysed using molecular docking, molecular dynamics simulations, quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction, and western blot. RESULTS Analysis of faecal samples from SNL mice showed dysregulation in the gut microbiota and alterations in PA metabolism-related enzymes. GC-MS analysis revealed reduced PA levels in faeces, serum, and spinal cord tissue. Network pharmacology and molecular docking identified therapeutic targets shared between PA and NP, primarily related to inflammation regulation. Treatment with exogenous PA supplementation alleviated pain and inhibited inflammation in the intestine and spinal cord, including NLRP3 inflammasome and NF-κB activation. CONCLUSION AST treatment modulated the gut microbiota, elevated PA levels, reduced inflammation, and strengthened the intestinal barrier, exerting an analgesic effect. Enhancing the levels of PA is a potentially novel mechanism underlying the analgesic effects of AST.

Abstract
Space flight has many adverse effects on the physiological functions of astronauts. Certain similarities have been observed in some physiological processes of rodents and astronauts in space, although there are also differences. These similarities make rodents helpful models for initial investigations into space-induced physiological changes. This study uses a 3D-Clinostat to simulate microgravity and explores the role of microgravity in space flight-induced liver and brain abnormalities by comparing changes in the gut microbiota, serum metabolites, and the function and physiological biochemistry of liver and brain tissues between the simulated microgravity (SMG) group mice and the wild type (WT) group mice. The study, based on hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining, 16S sequencing technology, and non-targeted metabolomics analysis, shows that the gut tissue morphology of the SMG group mice is abnormal, and the structure of the gut microbiota and the serum metabolite profile are imbalanced. Furthermore, using PICRUST 2 technology, we have predicted the functions of the gut microbiota and serum metabolites, and the results indicate that the liver metabolism and functions (including lipid metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and sugar metabolism, etc.) of the SMG group mice are disrupted, and the brain tissue metabolism and functions (including neurotransmitters and hormone secretion, etc.) are abnormal, suggesting a close relationship between microgravity and liver metabolic dysfunction and brain dysfunction. Additionally, the high similarity in the structure of the gut microbiota and serum metabolite profile between the fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) group mice and the SMG group mice, and the physiological and biochemical differences in liver and brain tissues compared to the WT group mice, suggest that microgravity induces imbalances in the gut microbiota, which in turn triggers abnormalities in liver and brain metabolism and function. Finally, through MetaMapp analysis and Pearson correlation analysis, we found that valeric acid, a metabolite of gut microbiota, is more likely to be the key metabolite that relates to microgravity-induced gut microbiota abnormalities, disorders of amino acid and lipid metabolism, and further induced metabolic or functional disorders in the liver and brain. This study has significant practical application value for deepening the understanding of the adaptability of living organisms in the space environment.

Abstract
Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by cognitive decline, memory loss, and behavioural changes. While genetic predispositions and pathological processes have been the traditional focus, this review highlights the fundamental role of environmental factors, particularly nutrition, within the exposome framework in modulating the risk and progression of AD. The exposome, which includes the totality of environmental exposures in an individual's lifetime, provides a comprehensive approach to understanding the complex aetiology of AD. In this review, we explore the impact of dietary factors and cyclic nucleotide pathways (cAMP/cGMP) on AD, emphasizing the potential of dietary interventions as therapeutic strategies. We investigate key aspects of how nutrition affects the accumulation of β-amyloid, the aggregation of tau proteins, and neuroinflammation. We also examine the impact of specific nutrients on cognitive performance and the risk of AD. Additionally, we discuss the potential of nutraceuticals with anti-phosphodiesterase activity and the role of various animal models of AD (such as 5xFAD, 3xTg-AD, Tg2576, and APP/PS1 mice) in demonstrating the effects of dietary interventions on disease onset and progression.

Abstract
Diet-related maternal obesity has been implicated in neurodevelopmental disorders in progeny. Although the precise mechanisms and effective interventions remain uncertain, our research elucidates some of these complexities. We established that a prenatal high-fat diet triggered maternal immune activation (MIA), marked by elevated serum lipopolysaccharide levels and inflammatory-cytokine overproduction, which dysregulated the maternal tryptophan metabolism promoting the accumulation of neurotoxic kynurenine metabolites in the embryonic brain. Interventions aimed at mitigating MIA or blocking the kynurenine pathway effectively rescued the male mice social performance. Furthermore, excessive kynurenine metabolites initiated oxidative stress response causing neuronal migration deficits in the fetal neocortex, an effect that was mitigated by administering the glutathione synthesis precursor N-Acetylcysteine, underscoring the central role of maternal immune-metabolic homeostasis in male mice behavioral outcomes. Collectively, our study accentuated the profound influence of maternal diet-induced immuno-metabolic dysregulation on fetal brain development and provided the preventive strategies for addressing neurodevelopmental disorders.

Abstract
Humans and other animals contain multitudes of microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, and viruses, which make up a diverse microbiome. Across body sites including skin, gastrointestinal tract, and oral cavity there are distinct microbial niches that are made up of trillions of microorganisms that have co-evolved to inhabit and interact with the host. The microbiome also interacts with the changing environment. This tripartite interaction between the host, microbiome, and environment suggests microbial communities play a key role in the biological processes of the host, such as development and behaviors. Over the past two decades, emerging research continues to reveal how host and microbe interactions impact nervous system signaling and behaviors, and influence neurodevelopmental, neurological, and neurodegenerative disorders. In this review, we will describe the unique features of the maternal microbiome that exist during the perinatal period and discuss evidence for the function of the maternal microbiome in offspring development. Finally, we will discuss how the maternal environment interacts with the microbiome and nervous system development and then postulate how the maternal microbiome can modify early offspring development to have lasting influence on brain health.

Abstract
In early-life, the gut microbiota is highly modifiable, being modulated by external factors such as maternal microbiota, mode of delivery, and feeding strategies. The composition of the child's gut microbiota will deeply impact the development and maturation of its immune system, with consequences for future health. As one of the main sources of microorganisms to the child, the mother represents a crucial factor in the establishment of early-life microbiota, impacting the infant's wellbeing. Recent studies have proposed that dysbiotic maternal gut microbiota could be transmitted to the offspring, influencing the development of its immunity, and leading to the development of diseases such as obesity. This paper aims to review recent findings in gut microbiota and immune system interaction in early-life, highlighting the benefits of a balanced gut microbiota in the regulation of the immune system.

Abstract
This study was conducted to elucidate the effects of different degrees of substitution (DS) on the properties of propionylated and butyrylated starches and to investigate their efficacy and mechanisms in ameliorating autism-like phenotypes. Fourier transform infrared spectra of propionylated and butyrylated starches revealed the presence of the CO absorption peak at 1730 cm-1. Additionally, as the DS increased, the surface of the starch granules became rougher, and the crystallinity decreased. Moreover, in vitro digestion tests demonstrated that propionylated and butyrylated starches with a DS of approximately 0.25 exhibited enhanced resistance to digestion. Animal experiments indicated that butyrylated starch significantly improved abnormal behaviors in autism-like rats and increased butyrate accumulation in the colon. Furthermore, butyrylated starch normalized aberrant expression of G protein-coupled receptor 41 and tryptophan hydroxylase 1 in the colon, promoting 5-hydroxytryptamine metabolism and suppressing the expression of ionized calcium binding adaptor molecule 1 and glial fibrillary acidic protein in the gut and brain. These findings demonstrate that butyrylated starch effectively alleviates autism-like phenotypes in rats, supporting strategies to mitigate autism and develop new applications for natural corn starch.

Abstract
Microbial transmission from mother to infant is important for offspring microbiome formation and health. However, it is unclear whether maternal gut inflammation (MGI) during lactation influences mother-to-infant microbial transmission and offspring microbiota and disease susceptibility. In this study, it is found that MGI during lactation altered the gut microbiota of suckling pups by shaping the maternal microbiota in the gut and mammary glands. MGI-induced changes in the gut microbiota of suckling pups lasted into adulthood, resulting in the exacerbation of acute liver failure (ALF) caused by acetaminophen (APAP) in offspring. Specifically, MGI reduced the abundance of Lactobacillus reuteri (L. reuteri) and its metabolite indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) level in adult offspring. L. reuteri and IAA alleviated ALF in mice by promoting intestinal IL-22 production. Mechanistically, IL-22 limits APAP-induced excessive oxidative stress and ferroptosis by activating STAT3. The intestinal abundances of L. reuteri and IAA are inversely associated with the progression of patients with ALF. Overall, the study reveals the role of MGI in mother-to-infant microbial transmission and disease development in offspring, highlighting potential strategies for intervention in ALF based on the IAA-IL-22-STAT3 axis.

Abstract
Royal jelly (RJ) has long been considered a crucial dietary component in dictating caste differentiation in honeybees. As a nutritional additive, royal jelly imparts a broad range of benefits to mammals and humans; however, its precise impact on the social hierarchy of these advanced animals is not yet fully understood. This study aims to determine whether the benefits of royal jelly can be transferred to rats to alter their social ranks and uncover the underlying mechanisms. A submissive model was established by inducing dysbiosis in rats, via the persistent exposure of vancomycin. Royal jelly at a dose of 2.5 g/kg was daily administered to the subject rats during postnatal weeks (PNW) 6 and 7. At the end of the intervention, animals were subjected to agonistic, water and tube competition tests, in order to assess their dominance status. As revealed by the results, the RJ treatment significantly improved the social rank of the dysbiotic rats, demonstrating that RJ can elicit positive effect on the social behaviors (caused by dysbiosis) of rats. All behavioral paradigms yielded consistent results, with no notable differences in body weight or anxiety levels. Regarding gut microbiome, vancomycin exposure caused the dysbiosis of the subject rats, which was partially reversed by treatment with royal jelly. Specifically, the intestinal presence of Proteobacteria was profoundly attenuated by the RJ supplementation, resulting in a comparable level with the intact/dominant rats. At the genus level, both Escherichia and Clostridium displayed similar dynamics in relation to Proteobacteria, implying their involvement with the RJ-mediated dominance switching. Transcriptomic analysis in the medial prefrontal context showed that the expression of a broad range of genes was influenced by RJ intake, embodying various pathways related to neuronal transmission such as neuroactive ligan-receptor interaction, the synaptic vesicle cycle, etc. By virtue of correlation analysis, Escherichia, Akkermansia and Clostridium were strongly associated with a set of gene modules around gastrin releasing peptide (Grp) and signaling pathways around Rps6ka3, establishing an intrinsic gut-brain communication. Furthermore, the infection trials of Escherichia significantly degraded the social ranks of the RJ-remedied rats in tube tests, while a series of cerebral genes like Grpr and Grpel1, as well as prefrontal spine density, were concordantly altered, underscoring the critical role of the gut-brain link in deciding the outcomes of the dyadic contests. In summary, this is an intriguing example of how royal jelly can influence the social ranks of mammals, emphasizing the importance of microbe-host interaction in mediating this species-spanning function of royal jelly in shaping social hierarchy.

Abstract
Quinoa, rich in pharmacologically active ingredients, possesses the potential benefit in preventing cognitive impairments induced by hypoxia. In this study, the efficacy of quinoa ethanol extracts (QEE) consumption (200 and 500 mg/kg/d, respectively) against hypobaric hypoxia (HH)-induced cognitive deficits in mice was investigated. QEE significantly ameliorated hypoxic stress induced by HH, as evidenced by improvements in baseline indices and reductions in hypoxia-inducible factor 1α levels. Furthermore, QEE enhanced antioxidant defense mechanisms, alleviated neuroinflammation in brain regions associated with memory, and improved HH-induced cognitive impairments by modulating the cyclic adenosine monophosphate response element-binding protein/brain-derived neurotrophic factor signaling pathway. Higher doses generally yielded more effective outcomes than lower doses. QEE also significantly reshaped the gut microbiome structure of HH mice, inhibited gut barrier damage, and reduced lipopolysaccharide migration, thereby increasing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) levels. Our findings suggest that QEE may be a promising strategy for preventing hypoxia-induced cognitive impairments by maintaining gut microbiome stability and increasing SCFAs levels.

Abstract
The effect of digestion on nanocarriers will affect the release and pharmacological effects of bioactive compounds in delivery systems. The digestion of cellulose is limited to gut microbiota, which offers a new research strategy for targeted delivery of bioactive compounds. Herein, positively charged cellulose-like chitosan/polyvinylpyrrolidone nanofiber was prepared to improve the residence time, colon target and gut microbiota regulation activity of quercetin decorated selenium nanoparticles (QUE@SeNPs/CS/PVPNFs). Selenium nanoparticles block the degradation of quercetin and QUE@SeNPs/CS/PVPNFs only decompose when caused by chitosanase secretion from gut microbiota. In vivo imaging showed that the residence time of QUE@SeNPs/CS/PVPNFs was longer than that of QUE@SeNPs. Thus, it significantly decreased the lipid concentrations in liver, which further inhibited insulin resistance in mice. Moreover, QUE@SeNPs/CS/PVPNFs treatment improves gut barrier integrity, increased the relative abundance of anti-obesity and anti-inflammation related bacterial including Akkermansia, Lactobacillus and Bacteroides. Consequently, the inflammatory factor (IL-β and TNF-α) levels in gut, liver and brain were also decreased. Nissl and PSD-95 staining indicated that QUE@SeNPs/CS/PVPNFs ameliorated synapse dysfunction in the brain. Therefore, QUE@SeNPs/CS/PVPNFs has a greater effect than QUE@SeNPs in improving cognitive ability in Morris water maze. Overall, QUE@SeNPs/CS/PVPNFs with prolonged residence time attenuates cognitive disorder via gut-liver-brain axis in AD.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (Mets) is an important contributor to morbidity and mortality in cardiovascular, liver, neurological, and reproductive diseases. Short-chain fatty acid (SCFA), an organismal energy donor, has recently been demonstrated in an increasing number of studies to be an important molecule in ameliorating immuno-inflammation, an important causative factor of Mets, and to improve lipid distribution, blood glucose, and body weight levels in animal models of Mets. This study reviews recent research advances on SCFA in Mets from an immune-inflammatory perspective, including complications dominated by chronic inflammation, as well as the fact that these findings also contribute to the understanding of the specific mechanisms by which gut flora metabolites contribute to metabolic processes in humans. This review proposes an emerging role for SCFA in the inflammatory Mets, followed by the identification of major ambiguities to further understand the anti-inflammatory potential of this substance in Mets. In addition, this study proposes novel strategies to modulate SCFA for the treatment of Mets that may help to mitigate the prognosis of Mets and its complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aging is the main risk factor for developing cognitive impairments and associated neurodegenerative diseases. However, environmental factors, including nutritional health, are likely to promote or reduce cognitive impairments and neurodegenerative pathologies. An intricate relationship exists between maternal nutrition and adult eating behavior, metabolic phenotype, and cognitive abilities. SUMMARY The objective of the present review was to collect available data, suggesting a link between maternal overnutrition and the latter impairment of cognitive functions in the progeny, and to relate this relationship with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Indeed, cognitive impairments are major behavioral signs of AD. We first reviewed studies showing an association between unbalanced maternal diet and cognitive impairments in the progeny in humans and rodent models. Then we looked for cellular and molecular hallmarks which could constitute a breeding ground for AD in those models. With this end, we focused on synaptic dysfunction, altered neurogenesis, neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and pathological protein aggregation. Finally, we proposed an indirect mechanism linking maternal unbalanced diet and progeny's vulnerability to cognitive impairments and neurodegeneration through promoting metabolic diseases. We also discussed the involvement of progeny's gut microbiota in the maternal diet-induced vulnerability to metabolic and neurodegenerative diseases. KEY MESSAGES Further investigations are needed to fully decipher how maternal diet programs the fetus and infant brain. Addressing this knowledge gap would pave the way to precise nutrition and personalized medicine to better handle cognitive impairments in adulthood.

Abstract
Butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid, is a crucial product of gut microbial fermentation with significant implications for various metabolic and physiological processes. Dietary sources of butyrate are limited, primarily derived from the fermentation of dietary fibers by butyrate-producing gut bacteria. Butyrate exerts its effects primarily as a histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitor and through signaling pathways involving G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). Its diverse benefits include promoting gut health, enhancing energy metabolism, and potentially alleviating complications associated with obesity. However, the exact role of butyrate in obesity is still under investigation, with a limited number of human trials necessitating further research to determine its efficacy and safety profile. Moreover, butyrate impact on the gut-brain axis and its modulation of microbiome effect on behavior highlight its broader importance in regulating host physiology. A thorough understanding of the metabolic pathways and mechanisms of butyrate is essential for developing targeted interventions for metabolic disorders. Continued research is crucial to fully realize its therapeutic potential and optimize its clinical applications in human health. In summary, this review illuminates the multifaceted role of butyrate as a potential mediator of obesity and related metabolic changes.

Abstract
Maternal obesity is known to increase the risk of psychiatric disorders, such as anxiety, depression, schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder in the offspring. While preventive measures are well-documented, practical approaches for addressing the damages once they are already established are limited. We have recently demonstrated the interplay between maternal obesity and treatment with cannabidiol (CBD) on neuroinflammation and peripheral metabolic disturbances during adolescence, however, it is known that both factors tend to vary throughout life. Therefore, here we investigated the potential of CBD to mitigate these alterations in the adult offspring of obese dams. Female Wistar rats were fed a cafeteria diet for 12 weeks prior to mating, and during gestation and lactation. Offspring received CBD (50 mg/kg) for 3 weeks from the 70th day of life. Behavioral tests assessed anxiety-like manifestations and social behavior, while neuroinflammatory and endocannabinoid markers were evaluated in the hypothalamus, prefrontal cortex (PFC) and hippocampus, as well as the biochemical profile in the plasma. CBD treatment attenuated maternal obesity-induced anxiety-like and social behavioral alterations, restoring exacerbated astrocytic and microglial markers in the hypothalamus, PFC and hippocampus of the offspring, as well as endocannabinoid levels in the PFC, with notable sex differences. Additionally, CBD attenuated plasma glucose and lipopolysaccharides (LPS) concentrations in females. These findings underscore the persistent influence of maternal obesity on the offspring's health, encompassing metabolic irregularities and behavioral impairments, as well as the role of the endocannabinoid system in mediating these outcomes across the lifespan.

Emerging research has illustrated the pivotal role of a mother's diet during pregnancy in influencing the prenatal gut microbiome and subsequently shaping the neurodevelopment of her offspring. The intricate interplay between maternal gut health, nutrition, and neurodevelopmental outcomes has emerged as a captivating field of investigation within developmental science. Acting as a dynamic bridge between mother and fetus, the maternal gut microbiome, directly and indirectly, impacts the offspring's neurodevelopment through diverse pathways. This comprehensive review delves into a spectrum of studies, clarifying putative mechanisms through which maternal nutrition, by modulating the gut microbiota, orchestrates the early stages of brain development. Drawing insights from animal models and human cohorts, this work underscores the profound implications of maternal gut health for neurodevelopmental trajectories and offers a glimpse into the formulation of targeted interventions able to optimize the health of both mother and offspring. The prospect of tailored dietary recommendations for expectant mothers emerges as a promising and accessible intervention to foster the growth of beneficial gut bacteria, potentially leading to enhanced cognitive outcomes and reduced risks of neurodevelopmental disorders.

Abstract
Aging impairs cognitive function, whereas nutritional intervention can delay aging and age-related diseases. Lycopene (LYC), a naturally occurring carotenoid, posses multiple health-promoting properties, including neuroprotective function. Here, the effects of LYC on memory and behavioral deficits induced by D-galactose (D-gal) treatment and the relative contribution of LYC-derived gut microbiota in these process were investigated. Results demonstrated that LYC showed effective protection on D-gal induced cognitive deficit and neuronal damage. Moreover, LYC treatment has beneficial effects on gut barrier damage, microbiota dysbiosis and levels of SCFAs in D-gal-induced subacute aging mice. Next, fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) experiment was performed and increased SCFAs were observed in mice received stools from D-gal+LYC group when compared with D-gal-FMT group. Thus, we added SCFAs treatment served as a control group in order to evaluated whether the alterations of gut-brain axis could be attributed to LYC-reshaped gut microbiota and SCFAs. Results showed that recipient mice received SCFAs and stools from D-gal+LYC group have similar beneficial effects in improving gut and brain function, demonstrated as: improved intestinal health via elevating antioxidant enzymes contents, increasing the expressions of tight junctions proteins and protecting gut barrier, enhanced mice working memory capacity via alleviating hippocampal neurons impairment, improving synaptic function and enhancing mitochondrial function in the intestinal pseudo-aseptic mice. In conclusion, our results demonstrated that LYC-derived microbiome played a pivotal role in the regulation of cognitive functions during aging and enhanced SCFAs formation might be an important signaling molecule connecting gut microbiome and brain.

Abstract
Cognitive impairment in various mental illnesses, particularly neuropsychiatric disorders, has adverse functional and clinical consequences. While genetic mutations and epigenetic dysregulations of several genes during embryonic and adult periods are linked to cognitive impairment in mental disorders, the composition and diversity of resident bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract-shaped by environmental factors-also influence the brain epigenome, affecting behavior and cognitive functions. Accordingly, many recent studies have provided evidence that human gut microbiota may offer a potential avenue for improving cognitive deficits. In this review, we provide an overview of the relationship between cognitive impairment, alterations in the gut microbiome, and epigenetic alterations during embryonic and adult periods. We examine how various factors beyond genetics-such as lifestyle, age, and maternal diet-impact the composition, diversity, and epigenetic functionality of the gut microbiome, consequently influencing cognitive performance. Additionally, we explore the potential of maternal gut microbiome signatures and epigenetic biomarkers for predicting cognitive impairment risk in older adults. This article also explores the potential roles of nutritional deficiencies in programming cognitive disorders during the perinatal period in offspring, as well as the promise of gut microbiome-targeted therapeutics with epigenetic effects to prevent or alleviate cognitive dysfunctions in infants, middle-aged adults, and older adults. Unsolved challenges of gut microbiome-targeted therapeutics in mitigating cognitive dysfunctions for translation into clinical practice are discussed, lastly.

Abstract
Dysfunction in the prefrontal cortex can lead to cognitive inflexibility due to multifactorial causes as included cardiometabolic disorders, stress, inadequate diets, as well as an imbalance of the gut-brain axis microbiota. However, these risk factors have not been evaluated jointly. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of physical stress (MS: Male Stress and FS: Female Stress) and high-fat diet (MD: Male Diet and FD: Female Diet) supplementation on the gut microbiota and cognitive flexibility. METHODS The study was performed on 47 mice, 30 male (M) and 17 female (F) BALBc, exposed to chronic stress physical (S) and high-fat diet (D). Cognitive flexibility was evaluated using the Attentional Set-Shifting Test (ASST) and the gut microbiota composition in terms of relative abundance (%) and alpha-beta diversity. RESULTS Results showed that S and D reduced cognitive flexibility in male and female mice (p < 0.0001). Significant changes occurred in Alistipes spp. (MM vs. MS:MD; p < 0.0001), Barnesiella spp. (FC vs. FS; p = 0.0002; FC vs. FD, p = 0.0033); Dorea spp. (MC vs. MD, p = 0.0008; MM vs. MD, p < 0.0001) and Lactobacillus spp. (MC vs. MD and FM vs. FS, p < 0.0001; FM vs. MD, p = 0.0393) genera among groups. Predictive functional analysis (QIIME2 and PICRUSt2) showed a significant increase in the expression of histidine kinase, alanine dehydrogenase, glutamine synthase, glutamate synthase, arginine succinyl synthase, and tryptophan synthase genes (p < 0.05), the latter being a precursor of serotonin (5-HT). CONCLUSIONS Chronic physical stress and a high-fat diet modify cognitive flexibility and the composition and predictive function of the gut microbiota.

Abstract
Atopic dermatitis (AD) and psoriasis are chronic skin diseases with a global impact, posing significant challenges to public health systems and severely affecting patients' quality of life. This review delves into the key role of the gut microbiota in these diseases, emphasizing the importance of the gut-skin axis in inflammatory mediators and immune regulation and revealing a complex bidirectional communication system. We comprehensively assessed the pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, and treatment strategies for AD and psoriasis, with a particular focus on how the gut microbiota and their metabolites influence disease progression via the gut-skin axis. In addition, personalized treatment plans based on individual patient microbiome characteristics have been proposed, offering new perspectives for future treatment approaches. We call for enhanced interdisciplinary cooperation to further explore the interactions between gut microbiota and skin diseases and to assess the potential of drugs and natural products in modulating the gut-skin axis, aiming to advance the treatment of skin diseases.

Abstract
Alcohol-related liver disease (ALD) encompasses a spectrum of hepatic disorders resulting from alcohol abuse, which constitutes the predominant etiology of morbidity and mortality associated with hepatic pathologies globally. Excessive alcohol consumption disrupts the integrity of the intestinal barrier and perturbs the balance of gut microbiota, thereby facilitating the progression of ALD. Ellagic acid (EA) has been extensively reported to be an effective intervention for alleviating liver symptoms. However, the target molecules of EA in improving ALD and its underlying mechanism remain elusive. First, our study indicates that EA ameliorated ALD through the hepatic circadian rhythm signaling by up-regulating neuronal PAS domain protein 2 (NPAS2). Furthermore, analysis of the intestinal microbiome showed that EA significantly enhanced the abundance of beneficial bacteria, which was positively correlated with NPAS2 expression and negatively correlated with liver injury. Finally, antibiotic treatment and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) experiments established a causal relationship between the reshaped microbiota and NPAS2 in the amelioration of ALD. In summary, our study demonstrates novel evidence that EA attenuated ALD by modulating the hepatic circadian rhythm signaling pathway via the gut microbiota-NPAS2 axis, providing valuable insights for EA and microbiome-targeted interventions against ALD.

Abstract
Background The prevalence of obesity and its related ailments is on the rise, posing a substantial challenge to public health. Tea, widely enjoyed for its flavors, has shown notable potential in mitigating obesity. Yet, there remains a lack of exhaustive bibliometric studies in this domain. Methods We retrieved and analyzed multidimensional data concerning tea and obesity studies from January 2004 to June 2024, using the Web of Science Core Collection database. This bibliometric investigation utilized tools such as Bibliometrix, CiteSpace, and VOSviewer to gather and analyze data concerning geographical distribution, leading institutions, prolific authors, impactful journals, citation patterns, and prevalent keywords. Results There has been a significant surge in publications relevant to this field within the last two decades. Notably, China, Hunan Agricultural University, and the journal Food and Function have emerged as leading contributors in terms of country, institution, and publication medium, respectively. Zhonghua Liu of Hunan Agricultural University has the distinction of most publications, whereas Joshua D. Lambert of The State University of New Jersey is the most cited author. Analyses of co-citations and frequently used keywords have identified critical focus areas within tea anti-obesity research. Current studies are primarily aimed at understanding the roles of tea components in regulating gut microbiota, boosting fat oxidation, and increasing metabolic rate. The research trajectory has progressed from preliminary mechanism studies and clinical trials to more sophisticated investigations into the mechanisms, particularly focusing on tea's regulatory effects on gut microbiota. Conclusion This study offers an intricate overview of the prevailing conditions, principal focus areas, and developmental trends in the research of tea's role against obesity. It delivers a comprehensive summary and discourse on the recent progress in this field, emphasizing the study's core findings and pivotal insights. Highlighting tea's efficacy in obesity prevention and treatment, this study also points out the critical need for continued research in this area.

Abstract
Regulating the gut microbiota alleviates hepatic encephalopathy (HE). Whether it is imperative to withhold treatment for microbial imbalance after liver functional recovery remains unclear. The aim of this work was to elucidate the alterations in cognitive behavior, liver function, synaptic transmission, and brain metabolites in acute liver failure (ALF) mice before and after hepatic function recovery. Towards this end, thioacetamide was injected intraperitoneally to establish an ALF mouse model, which induced HE. Hierarchical clustering analysis indicated that while the liver functions normalized, cognitive dysfunction and intestinal dysbacteriosis occurred in the ALF mice 14 days after thioacetamide injection. In addition, fecal microbiota transplantation from the ALF mice with liver function recovery induced liver injury and cognitive impairment. Alterations in synaptic transmission were found in the ALF mice with liver function improvement, and the correlations between the gut bacteria and synaptic transmission in the cortex were significant. Finally, apparent alterations in the brain metabolic profiles of the ALF mice were detected after liver function improvement by performing 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, suggesting a risk of HE. These results showed that intestinal dysbacteriosis in ALF mice with liver function recovery is sufficient to induce liver injury and cognitive impairment. This indicates that continuous care may be necessary for monitoring microbial imbalance even in patients with ALF-induced HE whose liver function has recovered significantly.

Abstract
Phenolics in bound form extensively exist in cereal dietary fiber, especially insoluble fiber, while their release profile in gastrointestinal tract and contribution to the potential positive effects of dietary fiber in modulating gut microbiota still needs to be disclosed. In this work, the composition of bound phenolics (BPs) in triticale insoluble dietary fiber (TIDF) was studied, and in vitro gastrointestinal digestion as well as colonic fermentation were performed to investigate BPs liberation and their role in regulating intestinal flora of TIDF. It turned out that most BPs were unaccessible in digestion but partly released continuously during fermentation. 16 s rRNA sequencing demonstrated that TIDF possessed prebiotic effects by promoting anti-inflammatory while inhibiting proinflammatory bacteria alongside boosting SCFAs production and antioxidative BPs contributed a lot to these effects. Results indicated that TIDF held capabilities to regulate intestinal flora and BPs were important functional components to the health benefits of cereal dietary fiber.

Abstract
Socioeconomic (SE) disparity and health inequity are closely intertwined and associated with cross-generational increases in the rates of multiple chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in North America and beyond. Coinciding with this social trend is an observed loss of biodiversity within the community of colonizing microbes that live in and on our bodies. Researchers have rightfully pointed to the microbiota as a key modifiable factor with the potential to ease existing health inequities. Although a number of studies have connected the adult microbiome to socioeconomic determinants and health outcomes, few studies have investigated the role of the infant microbiome in perpetuating these outcomes across generations. It is an essential and important question as the infant microbiota is highly sensitive to external forces, and observed shifts during this critical window often portend long-term outcomes of health and disease. While this is often studied in the context of direct modulators, such as delivery mode, family size, antibiotic exposure, and breastfeeding, many of these factors are tied to underlying socioeconomic and/or cross-generational factors. Exploring cross-generational socioeconomic and health inequities through the lens of the infant microbiome may provide valuable avenues to break these intergenerational cycles. In this review, we will focus on the impact of social inequality in infant microbiome development and discuss the benefits of prioritizing and restoring early-life microbiota maturation for reducing intergenerational health disparities.

Abstract
Gut microbiota provides an important insight into clarifying the mechanism of active substances with low bioavailability, but its specific action mechanism varied case by case and remained unclear. Dihydroquercetin (DHQ) is a bioactive flavonoid with low bioavailability, which showed beneficial effects on colitis alleviation and gut microbiota modulation. Herein, we aimed to explore the microbiota-dependent anticolitis mechanism of DHQ in sight of gut microbiota metabolites and their interactions with microRNAs (miRNAs). Dietary supplementation of DHQ alleviated dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis phenotypes and improved gut microbiota dysbiosis. Fecal microbiota transplantation further revealed that the anticolitis activity of DHQ was mediated by gut microbiota. To clarify how the modulated gut microbiota alleviated colitis in mice, the tandem analyses of the microbiome and targeted metabolome were performed, and altered profiles of metabolite short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and bile acids and their producers were observed in DHQ-treated mice. In addition, SCFA treatment showed anticolitis activity compared to that of bile acids, along with the specific inhibition on the phosphoinositide-3-kinase (PI3K)-protein kinase B (Akt) pathway. Subsequently, the colonic miRNA profile of mice receiving SCFA treatment was sequenced, and a differentially expressed miR-10a-5p was identified. Both prediction analysis and dual-luciferase reporter assay indicated that miR-10a-5p directly bind to the 3'-untranslated regions of gene pik3ca, inhibit the PI3K-Akt pathway activation, and lead to colitis alleviation. Together, we proposed that gut microbiota mediated the anticolitis activity of DHQ through the SCFAs/miR-10a-5p/PI3K-Akt axis, and it provided a novel insight into clarifying the microbiota-dependent mechanism via the interaction between metabolites and miRNAs.

Abstract
The developmental origins of health and disease hypothesis have highlighted the link between early life environment and long-term health outcomes in offspring. For example, maternal protein restriction during pregnancy and lactation can result in adverse metabolic and cognitive outcomes in offspring postnatal. Hence, in the present study, we assess whether an isocaloric low-protein diet (ILPD) affects the fatty acid profile in breast milk, the hippocampal synaptophysin (Syn) ratio, and the oxidative stress markers in the neonatal stage of male and female offspring. The aim of this work was to assess the effect of an ILPD on the fatty acid profile in breast milk, quantified the hippocampal synaptophysin (Syn) ratio and oxidative stress markers in neonatal stage of male and female offspring. Female Wistar rats were fed with either a control diet or an ILPD during gestation to day 10 of lactation. Oxidative stress markers were assessed in serum and liver. All quantifications were done at postnatal day 10. The results showed: ILPD led to decreases of 38.5% and 17.4% in breast milk volume and polyunsaturated fatty acids content. Significant decreases of hippocampal Syn ratio in male offspring (decreases of 98% in hippocampal CA1 pyramidal and CA1 oriens, 83%, stratum pyramidal in CA3, 80%, stratum lucidum in CA3, and 81% stratum oriens in CA3). Male offspring showed an increase in pro-oxidant status in serum and liver. Thus, the data suggest that male offspring are more vulnerable than females to an ILPD during gestation and lactation.

Abstract
The world is facing a global nutrition crisis, as evidenced by the rising incidence of metabolic disorders such as obesity, insulin resistance and chronic inflammation. Skeletal muscle is the largest tissue in humans and plays an important role in movement and host metabolism. Muscle fibre formation occurs mainly during the embryonic stage. Therefore, maternal lifestyle, especially nutrition and exercise during pregnancy, has a critical influence on foetal skeletal muscle development and the subsequent metabolic health of the offspring. In this review, the influence of maternal obesity, malnutrition and micronutrient intake on foetal skeletal muscle development is systematically summarized. We also aim to describe how maternal exercise shapes foetal muscle development and metabolic health in the offspring. The role of maternal gut microbiota and its metabolites on foetal muscle development is further discussed, although this field is still in its 'infancy'. This review will provide new insights to reduce the global crisis of metabolic disorders and highlight current gaps to promote further research.

Abstract
An increasing number of people undergo anesthesia and surgery. Perioperative neurocognitive and depressive disorders are common central nervous system complications with similar pathogeneses. These conditions pose a deleterious threat to human health and a significant societal burden. In recent years, numerous studies have focused on the role of the gut microbiota and its metabolites in the central nervous system via the gut-brain axis. Its involvement in perioperative neurocognitive and depressive disorders has attracted considerable attention. This review aimed to elucidate the role of the gut microbiota and its metabolites in the pathogenesis of perioperative neurocognitive and depressive disorders, as well as the value of targeted interventions and treatments.

Abstract
Diabetic cognitive dysfunction (DCD) refers to cognitive impairment in individuals with diabetes, which is one of the most important comorbidities and complications. Preliminary evidence suggests that consuming sufficient dietary fiber could have benefits for both diabetes and cognitive function. However, the effect and underlying mechanism of dietary fiber on DCD remain unclear. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data from NHANES involving 2072 diabetics and indicated a significant positive dose-response relationship between the dietary fiber intake and cognitive performance in diabetics. Furthermore, we observed disrupted cognitive function and neuronal morphology in high-fat diet induced DCD mice, both of which were effectively restored by fucoidan supplementation through alleviating DNA epigenetic metabolic disorders. Moreover, fucoidan supplementation enhanced the levels of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in the cecum of diabetic mice. These SCFAs enhanced TET2 protein stability by activating phosphorylated AMPK and improved TETs activity by reducing the ratio of (succinic acid + fumaric acid)/ α-ketoglutaric acid, subsequently enhancing TET2 function. The positive correlation between dietary fiber intake and cognitive function in diabetics was supported by human and animal studies alike. Importantly, fucoidan can prevent the occurrence of DCD by promoting TET2-mediated active DNA demethylation in the cerebral cortex of diabetic mice.

Abstract
Sleep is essential for overall health, and its disruption is linked to increased risks of metabolic, cognitive, and cardiovascular dysfunctions; however, the molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study investigated how sleep disturbances contribute to metabolic imbalance and cognition impairment using a chronic sleep fragmentation (SF) mouse model. SF mice exhibited impaired cognition, glucose metabolism, and insulin sensitivity compared with controls. We identified increased acetate levels in hypothalamic astrocytes as a defensive response in SF mice. Through acetate infusion or astrocyte-specific Acss1 deletion to elevate acetate levels, we observed mitigated metabolic and cognitive impairments in SF mice. Mechanistically, acetate binds and activates pyruvate carboxylase, thereby restoring glycolysis and the tricarboxylic acid cycle. Among individuals most commonly affected by SF, patients with obstructive sleep apnea exhibited elevated acetate levels when coupled with type 2 diabetes. Our study uncovers the protective effect of acetate against sleep-induced metabolic and cognitive impairments.

Abstract
Pu-erh tea belongs to the six tea categories of black tea, according to the processing technology and quality characteristics, is divided into two types of raw tea and ripe tea. Raw tea is made from fresh leaves of tea as raw materials, through the process of greening, kneading, sun drying, steam molding and other processes made of tightly pressed tea. Ripe tea is made from Yunnan large-leafed sun green tea, using a specific process, post-fermentation (rapid post-fermentation or slow post-fermentation) processing of loose tea and tightly pressed tea. TAETEA Prebiotea is Puerh Ripe Tea, TAETEA Prebiotea has the effect of increasing insulin level and improving hyperglycemia in mice, and it also has the effect of regulating blood lipids, which can reduce the level of serum total cholesterol (TC) and triglycerides (TG), increase the level of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), and improve the metabolism of lipids. Therefore, further experiments were conducted by us, and TAETEA Prebiotea was formulated into a suitable dose for the intervention of non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) model rats, and at the end of the experiments, the samples of each group of experiments were analyzed and detected by the method of UHPLC-Q-Exactive LC-MS liquid-mass spectrometry methodology, and the relevant metabolites as well as metabolic pathways were analyzed by the method of Non targeted metabolomics analysis. As a result, 71 differential metabolites could be screened, of which 35 differential metabolites were up-regulated after intervention and 36 differential metabolites were down-regulated after intervention. Based on the KEGG pathway enrichment and Pathway Impact bubble diagram analysis, glycine, serine, threonine metabolism, arginine and proline metabolism, protein digestion and absorption, and central carbon metabolism in cancer may be the main metabolic pathways in which TAETEA Prebiotea exerted preventive effects on NAFLD rats, C00148 (Proline), C00300 (Creatine) and C00719 (Betaine) are the differential metabolites that play important regulatory roles.

Abstract
Gut microbiota is involved in intricate and active metabolic processes the host's brain function, especially its role in immune responses, secondary metabolism, and symbiotic connections with the host. Gut microbiota can promote the production of essential metabolites, neurotransmitters, and other neuroactive chemicals that affect the development and treatment of central nervous system diseases. This article introduces the relevant pathways and manners of the communication between the brain and gut, summarizes a comprehensive overview of the current research status of key gut microbiota metabolites that affect the functions of the nervous system, revealing those adverse factors that affect typical communication between the brain-gut axis, and outlining the efforts made by researchers to alleviate these neurological diseases through targeted microbial interventions. The relevant pathways and manners of communication between the brain and gut contribute to the experimental design of new treatment plans and drug development. The factors that may cause changes in gut microbiota and affect metabolites, as well as current intervention methods are summarized, which helps improve gut microbiota brain dialogue, prevent adverse triggering factors from interfering with the gut microbiota system, and minimize neuropathological changes.

Abstract
Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of dietary fibre on the mental health and cognitive function of children and adolescents. Methods: All interventional and observational studies that contained information on the relevant population (children and adolescents), intervention/exposures (high dietary fibre consumption) and outcomes (mental and cognitive parameters) were eligible. Eight electronic databases (Embase, Medline, Pubmed, Web of Science, Scopus, PsycINFO, Cochrane Library and ClinicalTrials.gov) were searched up to December 11, 2023. Results: A total of 15 studies (n = 4628) met inclusion criteria, consisting of 9 intervention trials and 6 observational studies. According to observational studies, higher dietary fibre consumption was associated with a 49% reduction in the odds of depression compared to lower intake (P < 0.0001; OR = 0.51; 95% CI: 0.38, 0.69; I2 = 0%). Furthermore, no significant correlations were found between dietary fibre consumption and intelligence or anxiety. Among intervention studies, no significant difference was observed between fibre supplementation and placebo in terms of anxiety (standardized mean difference (SMD): -0.23; 95% CI: -0.72, 0.27), stress (SMD: 0.03; 95% CI: -0.21, 0.28), memory (SMD: 0.46; 95% CI: -0.79, 1.71), or attention (SMD: -2.72; 95% CI: -6.30, 0.86). Conclusion: Evidence from observation studies demonstrated that higher dietary fibre consumption is associated with a decreased odds of depression symptoms, both in childhood and adolescence. However, the causal relationship between dietary fibre intake and mental and cognitive function in children and adolescents still requires further clarification through high-quality intervention studies in the future.

Abstract
Maternal malnutrition has been associated with neurodevelopmental deficits and long-term implications on the offspring's health and behavior. Here, we investigated the effects of maternal low-protein diet (LPD) or obesity-inducing maternal high-fat diet (HFD) on dyadic social interactions, group organization and autism-related behaviors in mice. We found that maternal HFD induced an autism-related behavioral phenotype in the male offspring, including a robust decrease in sociability, increased aggression, cognitive rigidity and repetitive behaviors. Maternal LPD led to a milder yet significant effect on autism-related symptoms, with no effects on olfactory-mediated social behavior. Under naturalistic conditions in a group setting, this manifested in altered behavioral repertoires, increased magnitude in dominance relations, and reduced interactions with novel social stimuli in the HFD male offspring, but not in the LPD offspring. Finally, we found HFD-induced transcriptomic changes in the olfactory bulbs of the male offspring. Together, our findings show that maternal malnutrition induces long-lasting effects on aggression and autism-related behaviors in male offspring, and potential impairments in brain regions processing chemosensory signals.

Abstract
Background Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a neurological disorder resulting from advanced liver injury. HE has a high mortality rate and poor prognosis. The pathogenesis of HE is still unclear, which has led to the lack of a satisfactory specific treatment method. There is increasing evidence that the intestinal flora affects the communication between the gut and the brain in the pathogenesis of HE. Adjusting the intestinal flora has had a beneficial effect on HE in recent studies, and the Qingchang Ligan formula (QCLG) has been shown in previous studies to regulate intestinal flora and metabolites. In this study, we established a thioacetamide-induced HE mouse model to evaluate the protective effect of QCLG on HE and explore its potential mechanism, which also demonstrated that intestinal flora dysbiosis is involved in the pathogenesis of HE. Methods Mice were intraperitoneally injected with thioacetamide (TAA, 150 mg/kg) to induce HE. Additionally, they were orally administered Qingchang Ligan Formula (QCLG) at a dose of 6.725 g/kg·d for seven days, while control mice received an equal volume of saline via gavage. Subsequently, samples were subjected to 16S ribosomal ribonucleic acid (rRNA) gene sequencing, high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) analysis. Result QCLG improved weight loss, cognitive impairment, neurological function scores, blood ammonia, and brain gene expression of interleukin-6 (TNF-α), Interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) induced by HE. Moreover, QCLG increased the levels of liver function indicators, including alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and serum TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6. 16S RNA sequencing revealed increased Oscillibacter, Colidextribacter, and Helicobacter in TAA-induced mouse fecal samples. Also, the abundance of Bifidobacterium decreases TAA-induced mouse fecal samples. In contrast, QCLG treatment significantly restored the gut microbial community. Metabolomics indicated significant differences in some metabolites among the normal control, treatment, and model groups, including 5-methoxytryptophan, Daidzein, Stercobilin, and Plumieride (PLU). Conclusion QCLG can alleviate neuroinflammation and prevent HE caused by liver injury by regulating intestinal flora in mouse models.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, is a complex gastrointestinal condition influenced by genetic, microbial, and environmental factors, among which the gut microbiota plays a crucial role and has emerged as a potential therapeutic target. Ganoderic acid A (GAA), which is a lanostane triterpenoid compound derived from edible mushroom Ganoderma lucidum, has demonstrated the ability to modulate gut dysbiosis. Thus, we investigated the impact of GAA on IBD using a dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis mouse model. GAA effectively prevented colitis, preserved epithelial and mucus layer integrity, and modulated the gut microbiota. In addition, GAA promoted tryptophan metabolism, especially 3-IAld generation, activated the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), and induced IL-22 production. Fecal microbiota transplantation validated the mediating role of the gut microbiota in the IBD protection conferred by GAA. Our study suggests that GAA holds potential as a nutritional intervention for ameliorating IBD by influencing the gut microbiota, thereby regulating tryptophan metabolism, enhancing AhR activity, and ultimately improving gut barrier function.

Abstract
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a prevalent functional gastrointestinal disorder characterized by visceral pain and gut dysmotility. However, the specific mechanisms by which Lactobacillus strains relieve IBS remain unclear. Here, we screened Lactobacillus strains from traditional Chinese fermented foods with potential IBS-alleviating properties through in vitro and in vivo experiments. We demonstrated that Lactiplantibacillus plantarum D266 (Lp D266) administration effectively modulates intestinal peristalsis, enteric neurons, visceral hypersensitivity, colonic inflammation, gut barrier function, and mast cell activation. Additionally, Lp D266 shapes gut microbiota and enhances tryptophan (Trp) metabolism, thus activating the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) and subsequently enhancing IL-22 production to maintain gut homeostasis. Mechanistically, Lp D266 potentially modulates colonic physiology and enteric neurons by microbial tryptophan metabolites. Further, our study indicates that combining Lp D266 with Trp synergistically ameliorates IBS symptoms. Together, our experiments identify the therapeutic efficacy of tryptophan-catabolizing Lp D266 in regulating gut physiology and enteric neurons, providing new insights into the development of probiotic-mediated nutritional intervention for IBS management.

Abstract
Chronic cerebral hypoperfusion (CCH), a disease afflicting numerous individuals worldwide, is a primary cause of cognitive deficits, the pathogenesis of which remains poorly understood. Bruton's tyrosine kinase inhibition (BTKi) is considered a promising strategy to regulate inflammatory responses within the brain, a crucial process that is assumed to drive ischemic demyelination progression. However, the potential role of BTKi in CCH has not been investigated so far. In the present study, we elucidated potential therapeutic roles of BTK in both in vitro hypoxia and in vivo ischemic demyelination model. We found that cerebral hypoperfusion induced white matter injury, cognitive impairments, microglial BTK activation, along with a series of microglia responses associated with inflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, and ferroptosis. Tolebrutinib treatment suppressed both the activation of microglia and microglial BTK expression. Meanwhile, microglia-related inflammation and ferroptosis processes were attenuated evidently, contributing to lower levels of disease severity. Taken together, BTKi ameliorated white matter injury and cognitive impairments induced by CCH, possibly via skewing microglia polarization towards anti-inflammatory and homeostatic phenotypes, as well as decreasing microglial oxidative stress damage and ferroptosis, which exhibits promising therapeutic potential in chronic cerebral hypoperfusion-induced demyelination.

Abstract
The short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) butyrate, propionate and acetate are microbial metabolites and their availability in the gut and other organs is determined by environmental factors, such as diet and use of antibiotics, that shape the diversity and metabolism of the microbiota. SCFAs regulate epithelial barrier function as well as mucosal and systemic immunity via evolutionary conserved processes that involve G protein-coupled receptor signalling or histone deacetylase activity. Indicatively, the anti-inflammatory role of butyrate is mediated through direct effects on the differentiation of intestinal epithelial cells, phagocytes, B cells and plasma cells, and regulatory and effector T cells. Intestinally derived SCFAs also directly and indirectly affect immunity at extra-intestinal sites, such as the liver, the lungs, the reproductive tract and the brain, and have been implicated in a range of disorders, including infections, intestinal inflammation, autoimmunity, food allergies, asthma and responses to cancer therapies. An ecological understanding of microbial communities and their interrelated metabolic states, as well as the engineering of butyrogenic bacteria may support SCFA-focused interventions for the prevention and treatment of immune-mediated diseases.

Abstract
Dietary nutrition plays a crucial role in determining pregnancy outcomes, with poor diet being a major contributor to pregnancy metabolic syndrome and metabolic disorders in offspring. While carbohydrates are essential for fetal development, the excessive consumption of low-quality carbohydrates can increase the risk of pregnancy complications and have lasting negative effects on offspring development. Recent studies not only highlighted the link between carbohydrate intake during pregnancy, maternal health, and offspring well-being, but also suggested that the quality of carbohydrate foods consumed is more critical. This article reviews the impacts of low-carbohydrate and high-carbohydrate diets on pregnancy complications and offspring health, introduces the varied physiological effects of different types of carbohydrate consumption during pregnancy, and emphasizes the importance of both the quantity and quality of carbohydrates in nutritional interventions during pregnancy. These findings may offer valuable insights for guiding dietary interventions during pregnancy and shaping the future development of carbohydrate-rich foods.
