Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous studies have linked ADHD with self-harm, but the processes underlying this association are not fully understood. This research aims to investigate the role of sleep disturbances as a potential pathway between ADHD diagnosis and self-harm behaviors. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included 90 youth aged between 11 and 18 years, divided into two groups: a case group of 45 youth diagnosed with ADHD and a control group of 45 youth without ADHD. Both groups completed the Inventory of Statements About Self-Injury to evaluate self-harm behaviors and the Sleep Disturbance Scale for Children to assess sleep disturbances. A path analysis was conducted to examine whether a significant proportion of the association between ADHD and self-harm was shared with sleep disturbances, while controlling for gender, youth education, family income, maternal education, and overall anxiety and depression scores. RESULTS An ADHD diagnosis was significantly associated with sleep disturbances (β = .62, p < .001) and self-harm behaviors (β = .35, p = .03). Additionally, sleep disturbances were significantly linked to self-harm (β = .51, p = .002) and played a significant role in the association between ADHD and self-harm (indirect effect β = .32, p = .001). CONCLUSION These findings suggest that sleep disturbances account for a substantial proportion of the shared variance in the association between ADHD and self-harm. While the cross-sectional design limits causal interpretations, these results highlight the importance of addressing sleep issues in clinical care for ADHD to potentially reduce self-harm risks and improve outcomes for at-risk youth.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder are at high risk for sleep difficulties, though sleep problems are widely recognized as a public health concern for adolescents broadly. School climate represents a potentially critical but understudied influence on sleep difficulties, given growing evidence supporting its association with health outcomes. The present study is the first to utilize a multimethod, multi-informant approach, including adolescent-report, parent-report, and actigraphy, to examine associations between school climate and different aspects of sleep functioning among adolescents with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder. METHODS Participants included a well-characterized sample of adolescents (45.1% female, 82.6% White) with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (n = 151) and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (n = 137) between 13 and 15 years old (M = 14.09). RESULTS Multigroup path analyses controlling for demographic characteristics, internalizing symptoms, and medication use indicated better-perceived school climate was associated with less adolescent-reported daytime sleepiness and fewer sleep/wake problems, regardless of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder status, though stronger associations were found in the non-attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder group. In contrast, for both adolescents with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, school climate was not significantly associated with adolescent- or actigraphy-measured sleep duration, actigraphy-assessed sleep efficiency, or parent-reported sleep quality. CONCLUSIONS Collectively, findings indicate school climate is associated with specific vs. broad-based aspects of sleep, and that associations may differ based on how sleep is assessed. Findings also contribute to an emerging evidence base supporting the importance of school climate to adolescent sleep quality.

Abstract
This study investigates the relationship between Sluggish Cognitive Tempo (SCT) and circadian preferences in children and adolescents. We also aimed to assess the relationship between digital game addiction and SCT, as existing literature is insufficient, particularly given the similarities between SCT and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in relation to internalizing symptoms and comorbidity. This study involved 72 children and adolescents with SCT and 77 healthy controls, aged 11-16 years, who were referred to the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry outpatient clinic. We used Sociodemographic Data Form, Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children-Present and Lifetime Version- Turkish Version (K-SADS-PL), Turgay's DSM-IV Based Screening and Assessment Scale for Disruptive Behavior Disorders in Children and Adolescents (T-DSM-IV-S), Child and Adolescent Behavior Inventory-SCT (CABI-SCT), Children's Chronotype Questionnaire (CCQ), Digital Game Addiction Scale (DGAS). In the group with SCT, we found that eveningness preference and digital game addiction were statistically significant. Correlation analyses revealed a moderate positive relationship between chronotype scores (eveningness preferences higher scores) and digital game addiction. Additionally, a strong positive correlation was found between chronotype and SCT scale scores, as well as between digital game addiction and SCT scale scores. These findings highlight the potential role of digital game addiction and circadian preferences in shaping profile of SCT, providing valuable insights into the understanding of SCT symptoms.

Abstract
Dysregulation profile has been associated with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children and adolescents, influencing its progression, outcomes, and potentially the response to treatment with methylphenidate, a commonly prescribed stimulant medication. Sleep disturbances are also closely linked to ADHD, as they significantly impact clinical outcomes and overall functioning, with variable responses to methylphenidate treatment. This study aimed to investigate whether methylphenidate improves sleep disturbances in children with ADHD and whether the presence of dysregulation profile negatively predicts this improvement. To explore this, we examined the role of baseline dysregulation profile (assessed with the Child Behavior Checklist), age, ADHD symptom severity (assessed with SNAP-IV scores), and functional impairment (assessed with ABAS-II scores) as potential predictors of changes in sleep disturbances (assessed with SDSC scores) following six months of methylphenidate monotherapy. A total of 115 participants (98 males) aged 6-17 years (mean age 10.32 ± 2.78 years) were included in the study. A hierarchical linear regression model was used to determine whether these baseline factors could predict changes in sleep disturbances, while accounting for initial sleep severity. The results showed that the presence of dysregulation profile at baseline was associated with higher sleep disturbances after treatment. While ADHD severity at baseline was associated with sleep disturbances at follow-up, it did not demonstrate any significant predictive value for sleep outcomes over time. In conclusion, dysregulation profile may act as a negative predictor of sleep outcomes following methylphenidate treatment. These findings highlight the importance of systematically assessing dysregulation profile before starting treatment. Future research with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up periods is needed to confirm these results and identify additional factors that contribute to sleep disturbances in children and adolescents with ADHD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of children has been considered. Children with attention-deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are likely to be more vulnerable too. This study aimed to provide a systematic review of evidence regarding the association between screen usage and symptoms of ADHD during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS This review adhered to PRISMA guidelines. Systematic searches were conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Sciences and Cochrane Library. RESULTS Of 130 identified reports, 8 papers covering 1587 subjects were included. The spent time on different types of screen time from TV to video games among children and adolescents with ADHD increased. The majority of studies showed that a surge in screen time was associated with the worsening of ADHD symptoms such as irritation, inattention, hyperactivity and oppositional defiant disorders (ODDs). The finding confirmed the severity of ADHD symptoms in individuals with a history of addictive or problematic usage of media was higher in comparison with others. One study found that educational screen time was not associated with disturbances in ADHD symptoms. In addition, ADHD symptoms during the COVID-19 pandemic were influenced by prior mental health situations. CONCLUSIONS The current findings suggest considering the negative association of excess screen time with ADHD symptoms, monitoring of screen time particularly for recreational purposes should be monitored to prevent negative consequences in children and adolescents with ADHD. On the other hand, designing educational and treatment interventions based on digital technology could not be ignored.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder often experience sleep problems, exacerbating symptoms, and cognitive deficits. However, the neurophysiological mechanisms underlying such deficits remained unclear. This study aims to use resting-state microstate analysis to investigate the neurophysiological characteristics in children with ADHD and sleep problems and explore whether neurophysiological abnormalities are associated with sleep problems. METHODS Five-minute eyes-closed resting-state EEG data were collected in 34 children with both ADHD and sleep problems, 32 children with ADHD without sleep problems, and 22 healthy controls aged 6-12 years. Participants' parents completed the ADHD Rating Scale, Behavioral Rating Inventory of Executive Function, and Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire. Five minutes of eyes-closed resting-state EEG data were collected, and agglomerative hierarchical clustering was used for microstate analysis. ANCOVAs, adjusted for sex and IQ, were used to compare ADHD symptoms, executive function, and microstate parameters across groups. Pearson partial correlations, controlling for sex and IQ, examined the association between microstate parameters and sleep problems. RESULTS Children with both ADHD and sleep problems exhibited more severe inattentive (20.4 ± 3.1 vs 18.0 ± 3.4, p < 0.05) and total symptoms (14.3 ± 6.0 vs 13.0 ± 5.3, p < 0.05), along with greater deficits in emotional regulation (1.88 ± 0.58 vs 1.60 ± 0.42, p < 0.05, organizational of materials 2.56 ± 0.41 vs 2.20 ± 0.55, p < 0.05, behavioral regulation (1.88 ± 0.40 vs 1.70 ± 0.36, p < 0.05), and global executive function (2.14 ± 0.30 vs 1.95 ± 0.30, p < 0.05), compared to children with ADHD without sleep problems. Moreover, Both ADHD groups exhibited significantly reduced microstate D occurrence and lower transition probability from microstate C to D compared to healthy controls (all p < 0.05). Additionally, no significant correlation was found between sleep problems and microstate parameters in all three groups after adjustment (all p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Children with both ADHD and sleep problems showed greater symptom severity and more pronounced executive function deficits compared to children with ADHD without sleep problems and healthy controls. Additionally, both ADHD groups showed overlapping atypical microstate parameters, suggesting children with co-occurring ADHD and sleep problems may share similar aberrant neurophysiological characteristics with children with ADHD alone. Resting-state EEG microstate parameters may serve as a sensitive tool for assessing sleep problems in children with ADHD, distinguishing them from typically developing children.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Around 70% of adolescents with ADHD experience sleep and/or homework problems. Both impairments have been previously associated with neuropsychological deficits but have not been simultaneously examined in adolescents with ADHD and clinical sleep problems. Therefore, this study investigated how sleep problems are associated with homework problems and how parent-rated behavioral indicators of neuropsychological functioning are part of this association in adolescents with ADHD. METHOD Parental ratings of homework problems (HPC) and behavioral indicators of neuropsychological functioning (CAMEL) of adolescents with ADHD and comorbid sleep problems (ADHD/sleep; n = 53), adolescents with ADHD only (n = 24), and neurotypical adolescents (NT; n = 53) were collected. Homework problems and behavioral indicators of neuropsychological functioning were compared between the three groups. A path analysis was performed to investigate whether the behavioral indicators of neuropsychological functioning are part of the relation between sleep problems in ADHD and homework problems. RESULTS We found no differences for either homework problems or behavioral indicators of neuropsychological functioning between the ADHD/sleep and ADHD only groups, except for a small significant difference in arousal regulation, but both ADHD groups showed more homework problems and behavioral indicators of weaker neuropsychological functioning compared to the NT group. Behavioral indicators of weaker neuropsychological functioning were related to the increased homework problems experienced in the ADHD/sleep and ADHD only groups compared to NT. CONCLUSION In adolescents with ADHD, sleep problems were not associated with more homework problems by weaker behavioral indicators of neuropsychological functioning. However, regardless of sleep problems, the behavioral indicators of neuropsychological functioning relate to the homework problems in adolescents with ADHD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND People with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often report disturbed sleep, as well as co-occurring symptoms of anxiety and depression. Yet studies employing objective assessments often do not show as many sleep disturbances compared to subjective measures. These discrepancies may relate to subjective reports capturing problematic nights, which may not be captured in a single night's sleep or by averaging objective measurements over several nights. Given that variability in behaviours is in general strongly linked to ADHD, individuals with ADHD could have greater sleep variability than individuals without ADHD. Using active and passive remote monitoring, we investigate differences in the level and variability of daily sleep behaviours between individuals with and without ADHD and explore if sleep is associated with changes in anxiety and depressive symptoms across a 10-week remote monitoring period. METHODS Forty individuals (20 with ADHD, 20 without) took part in a 10-week remote monitoring study. Active monitoring involved participants completing questionnaires on ADHD and co-occurring psychiatric symptoms at weeks 2, 6 and 10. Passive monitoring involved participants wearing a wearable device (Fitbit) that measured sleep each night. RESULTS Individuals with and without ADHD were similar in the levels of sleep recorded each night. However, compared to those without ADHD, participants with ADHD had more variable sleep duration, sleep onset and offset, and sleep efficiency over 10 weeks. Within-individual associations of co-occurring anxiety and depressive symptoms with the sleep features were non-significant. CONCLUSIONS In a 10-week remote monitoring study of sleep using a wearable device, we show that what distinguishes individuals with ADHD from those without is their greater variability in sleep features: participants with ADHD had a more variable sleep duration, sleep onset and offset, and sleep efficiency. Inconsistency and high variability are hallmarks of ADHD, and we show that this characteristic extends also to sleep among adolescents and adults with ADHD. Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sleep problems are highly prevalent and impairing in adolescents with ADHD. However, their relation with co-occurring mental health problems is still unclear. This study assessed whether adolescents with ADHD, with and without self-reported sleep problems, differ from each other in co-occurring mental health problems, and whether they differ from adolescents without ADHD. Furthermore, we examined whether the adolescents with ADHD and self-reported sleep problems do indeed have more disturbed sleep than the other two groups and lastly, whether these sleep differences are moderated by co-occurring mental health problems. METHOD Three groups of adolescents (13-17 years): 1) with ADHD and comorbid self-reported sleep problems (N = 56), 2) with ADHD but without self-reported sleep problems (N = 25), and 3) without ADHD (N = 56) were assessed. Group comparisons were done for symptoms of co-occurring mental health problems, self- and parent-reported sleep problems, and objective and subjective sleep parameters. Exploratively, moderating effects of co-occurring mental health problems on sleep differences between groups are examined. RESULTS Compared to those without self-reported sleep problems, adolescents with ADHD and comorbid self-reported sleep problems experienced significantly more co-occurring symptoms of mental health problems, especially depression. They also scored higher on all sleep problems, and had a longer sleep onset latency and lower sleep efficiency based on subjective and objective sleep measures. Depression and anxiety moderated objectively measured sleep differences. CONCLUSION Co-occurring mental health problems, especially depressive symptoms, are more prevalent in adolescents with ADHD and sleep problems and partially moderate the relation with sleep. This indicates that when adolescents with ADHD present with sleep problems in clinical practice, it is essential to also assess symptoms and other mental health problems and vice-versa.

Abstract
Despite decades-long interest in sleep in individuals with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)-"restless sleep" was a symptom for diagnosing attention deficit disorder in the Third Edition of the DSM-our understanding of its role in the pathophysiology, trajectories, and functional outcomes of ADHD remains far from complete. This is perhaps no more so the case than in the developmental period of adolescence. The oft-described "perfect storm" of short and ill-timed sleep coinciding with bioregulatory maturation during adolescence1 may be further intensified for adolescents with ADHD, who often experience wide-ranging and intensifying functional impairments.2 Almost a decade ago, Lunsford-Avery and colleagues3 provided a systematic review and research roadmap to guide future research on sleep in adolescents with ADHD, casting a much-needed spotlight on this understudied topic.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Few studies have characterized the nature of sleep problems among adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) using polysomnography (PSG). Additionally, although adolescents with ADHD and adolescents with sleep disturbances display similar neurocognitive deficits, the role of sleep in contributing to neurocognitive impairment in adolescent ADHD is unknown. This study investigated differences in PSG-measured sleep among adolescents with ADHD compared with non-psychiatric controls and associations with neurocognition. METHOD Medication-free adolescents aged 13 to 17 (N = 62, n = 31 with ADHD; mean age = 15.3 years; 50% female) completed a diagnostic evaluation, 3 nights of ambulatory PSG, the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery, and subjective reports of sleep and executive functioning. Linear regressions covarying for age, sex, and pubertal status examined group differences in sleep indices, and partial Pearson correlations assessed relations between sleep and neurocognition. RESULTS Although adolescents with ADHD did not exhibit differences in PSG-measured sleep duration, awakenings, or latency (ps > .05) compared with non-psychiatric controls, they displayed lower slow wave sleep percentage (β = -.40) and non-rapid eye movement (NREM) electroencephalogram (EEG) delta power (β = -.29). They also exhibited greater stage 2 percentage (β = .41), NREM EEG sigma power (β = .41), and elevated self-reported sleep disturbances (ps < .05). Lower NREM EEG delta power, increased high-frequency power, and slower decline in NREM EEG delta power overnight were associated with poorer neurocognition among adolescents with ADHD. CONCLUSION Adolescents with ADHD reported more sleep disturbances than non-psychiatric controls and exhibited differences in sleep stage distribution and NREM sleep EEG frequency. Sleep-EEG spectral indices were associated with impaired neurocognition, suggesting that physiological sleep processes may underlie neurocognitive deficits in ADHD. Future studies may clarify whether sleep plays a causal role in neurocognitive impairments in adolescent ADHD and whether interventions normalizing sleep improve neurocognition. PLAIN LANGUAGE SUMMARY This study investigated the sleep physiology in a sample of 62 adolescents, 31 with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and 31 with no psychiatric diagnoses, aged 13 to 17. The authors found that medication-free adolescents with ADHD displayed reduced time in deep slow wave sleep, and increased time in lighter stage 2 sleep, than adolescents without a psychiatric diagnosis. Results indicate that disruptions in the amount and pattern of slow wave electroencephalogram (EEG) activity, as well as increased high frequency EEG power during sleep, were associated with lower cognitive performance among adolescents with ADHD. The study findings suggest that sleep physiology may contribute to cognitive deficits in ADHD and future research should assess whether interventions normalizing sleep improve cognitive performance in adolescents with ADHD. Abstract
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a prevalent neurodevelopmental disorder influenced by both genetic and environmental factors, remains poorly understood regarding how its polygenic risk score (PRS) impacts functional networks and symptomology. This study capitalized on data from 11,430 children in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study to explore the interplay between PRSADHD, brain function, and behavioral problems, along with their interactive effects. The results showed that children with a higher PRSADHD exhibited more severe attention deficits and rule-breaking problems, and experienced sleep disturbances, particularly in initiating and maintaining sleep. We also identified the central executive network, default mode network, and sensory-motor network as the functional networks most associated with PRS and symptoms in ADHD cases, with potential mediating roles. Particularly, the impact of PRSADHD was enhanced in children experiencing heightened sleep disturbances, emphasizing the need for early intervention in sleep issues to potentially mitigate subsequent ADHD symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) demonstrates unique developmental manifestations in adolescence with implications for optimized, age-appropriate treatment. This 10-year update is the third in a series of systematic reviews examining the efficacy and safety of adolescent ADHD treatments. We broadly examined efficacy on ADHD symptoms, impairments, and other reported outcomes. Acute and long-term efficacy, and treatment moderators, were considered. METHOD We performed PubMed, EMBASE, and PsycINFO searches for articles published or in press from 2013 to 2024, integrated with hand search and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) identified in this series' earlier reviews. RCTs examining the safety or efficacy of interventions delivered to adolescents (ages 10.0-19.9) with a diagnosis of ADHD were included. Study characteristics were extracted and reviewed, quality of evidence was assessed using GRADE, and effect sizes were calculated for individual studies and illustrated using forest plots. RESULTS Sixty-three RCTs were identified. Quality of evidence ranged from high (medication; k = 29) to very low (nutrient supplementation, neurofeedback, occupational therapy; k = 1 each). Medications demonstrated consistent strong impact on ADHD symptoms and inconsistent impact on impairment. Diverse cognitive/behavioral treatments (C/BTs) demonstrated inconsistent impact on ADHD symptoms but strong and consistent impact on impairment and executive function skills, plus moderate benefits on internalizing symptoms. No interventions demonstrated significant safety concerns. Long-term maintenance (up to 3 years post-treatment) was demonstrated for C/BTs, though moderate quality of evidence was noted because participants cannot be fully blinded to receipt of treatment. CONCLUSIONS The effects of C/BTs and medication appear complementary, not duplicative. Combining medication and C/BT is advised at treatment outset to maximize engagement, maintenance, and response breadth (i.e. improving both ADHD symptoms/cognitive performance and coping skills/functional impairments). Engagement strategies (e.g. motivational interviewing) may facilitate uptake. Novel treatments do not yet demonstrate effects on ADHD symptoms or impairments in adolescents but remain a promising area for research.

INTRODUCTION Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a chronic condition caused by an immunoglobulin E-mediated response to environmental allergens, which affects 10-40% of the global population. AR symptoms, such as nasal congestion and rhinorrhea, significantly reduce quality of life and are associated with sleep disturbances, further exacerbating the condition's burden. Despite the known impact of AR on sleep, the effects of intranasal corticosteroids on sleep quality have not been comprehensively reviewed. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the efficacy of intranasal corticosteroids in improving sleep quality among patients with AR. METHODS This systematic review and meta-analysis followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The study protocol was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42023460698). A comprehensive search was conducted on PubMed, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and Ichushi-Web. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing intranasal corticosteroids with placebos in patients with AR were included. Data extraction and risk of bias assessment were independently performed by two authors. The primary outcome was the improvement in sleep quality measured by standardized questionnaires. Meta-analyses were performed using a random-effects model. The risk of bias was assessed using the RoB2 tool. RESULTS Eighteen RCTs involving 6,019 participants were included. The meta-analysis of 12 comparisons from eight studies for the Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire sleep domain showed significant improvement in sleep quality with a standardized mean difference (SMD) of 0.292 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.235-0.350, p < 0.0001, I2 = 0.0%). The Nocturnal Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire also showed improvement with an SMD of 0.284 (95% CI: 0.164-0.404, p < 0.0001) based on two comparisons from one study. However, the Epworth Sleepiness Scale did not show significant results (SMD: 0.027, 95% CI: -0.429 to 0.483, p = 0.907) based on two comparisons from two studies. Sensitivity analysis, excluding two studies with high risk of bias according to RoB2, confirmed the robustness of these results. Subgroup analyses for patients with seasonal or perennial AR showed significant improvements in both groups. CONCLUSION This study demonstrates that intranasal corticosteroids significantly improve sleep quality in patients with AR. These findings support the use of intranasal corticosteroids as a first-line treatment for AR, not only for managing daytime symptoms but also for enhancing sleep quality. Future research should focus on sleep quality changes as a primary outcome and incorporate both subjective and objective measures to better understand the relationship between sleep and AR symptoms. Abstract
Sleep disturbances (SD) are commonly reported concerns among parents and caregivers of children and adolescents with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). While it is widely acknowledged that SD can worsen various aspects of children and adolescents' well-being (e.g., academic performance and emotional/behavioral state), a comprehensive clinical characterization of ADHD and SD is currently lacking. To address this gap, 136 children and adolescents diagnosed with ADHD (aged 6 to 14 years) were retrospectively selected by reviewing electronic health records of hundreds of patients with neuropsychiatric disorders referred to the children's hospital. Participants were divided into two groups based on the presence of SD, assessed via a parent-report questionnaire (94 ADHD without SD and 42 ADHD with SD). Standardized measures of adaptive behavior, academic performance, ADHD-related and emotional/behavioral symptoms were collected. Results documented that the group of ADHD with SD obtained worse scores in specific aspects of adaptive behavior (conceptual and practical domains), academic performance (text comprehension, writing), ADHD symptoms (inattention) and emotional/behavioral difficulties (especially, mood/emotional regulation and stress) compared to those with ADHD without SD. In addition, our results established a relationship between sleep problems and diverse clinical aspects of children and adolescents with ADHD, while controlling for age, cognitive level, gender, ADHD symptoms severity, and Body Mass Index. From a clinical perspective, our study suggests that the presence of SD in patients with ADHD may serve as an indicator for strengths and weaknesses in this population, even demonstrating an independent relationship with specific clinical dimensions. Implications to improve clinical diagnostic and therapeutic interventions are discussed.

Abstract
Sleep problems are common in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). How sleep problems reflect specific ASD phenotypes is unclear. We studied whether sleep problems indexed functional impairment in a heterogeneous community sample of individuals with ASD. We analyzed 977 probands (233 females; age = 11.27 ± 4.13 years) from the Rhode Island Consortium for Autism Research and Treatment dataset, a unique public-private-academic collaboration involving all major points of service for families in Rhode Island. We found that individuals with a confirmed diagnosis of ASD were more likely to have sleep problems. However, across the whole sample and above and beyond a formal diagnosis, sleep problems were dimensionally associated with worse social impairment and poorer adaptive functioning. By using a large dataset reflective of the diversity of presentations in the community, this study underscores the importance of considering sleep problems in clinical practice to improve adaptive functioning in individuals with ASD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite research demonstrating sleep disturbance in children with Tourette syndrome (TS), few studies have examined bedtime regularity and sleep sufficiency, two important sleep health dimensions. Therefore, this study examined bedtime regularity and sleep sufficiency in children with TS relative to matched healthy control subjects, and its associated demographic, clinical, and behavioral factors. METHODS Participants were 384 parents or caregivers of children aged three to 17 years, including 192 with current TS and 192 matched healthy control subjects drawn from the 2020-2021 cycle of the National Survey of Children's Health. Parents completed questions assessing demographic (i.e., age, race, sex), clinical (i.e., attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder [ADHD], autism spectrum disorder, anxiety, depression, tic severity, behavioral or conduct problems, ADHD medication, health condition-related impairment), and behavioral (i.e., screen time) characteristics. Mann-Whitney U test and chi-square test of independence were performed to compare groups on bedtime regularity and sleep sufficiency, respectively. Ordinal regression and binary logistic regression without and with backward elimination were performed to evaluate indicators of bedtime regularity and sleep sufficiency, respectively, in children with TS. RESULTS Children with current TS had significantly poorer bedtime regularity, but not sleep sufficiency, relative to matched healthy control subjects. In children with TS, anxiety and two or more hours of daily screen time were associated with higher likelihood of poor bedtime regularity. Autism was associated with lower likelihood of insufficient sleep, and depression was associated with increased likelihood of insufficient sleep. CONCLUSIONS Findings put forth screen time, anxiety, and depression as intervention targets to optimize sleep health in children with TS.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The study objective was to inform patient-centered care for adolescent insomnia by describing adolescents' perspectives on insomnia. Specific constructs of interest included: 1) factors that contributed to insomnia development or maintenance, 2) impact of insomnia on day-to-day life, 3) recommended research priorities, and 4) overall experience living with insomnia. METHOD A convenience sample of adolescents (ages 13-18 years) self-identifying with insomnia symptoms was recruited through social media. Respondents (n = 3,014) completed an online survey. Responses to an open-ended item assessing patient experience were coded using thematic analysis. RESULTS Participants identified as 70.8% White non-Hispanic, 77.0% female, and lived in one of five English-speaking countries (United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, or New Zealand). Most (87.5%) met DSM-V diagnostic criteria for insomnia. The most common contributory factors to insomnia endorsed were stress (72.1%) and depressed mood (63.6%), while common impact areas were mood (72.2%), focus (61.0%), and pain (49.7%). Patient-centered research priorities were identifying insomnia causes (66.4%) and early detection (66.1%). Common adolescent experiences included high distress levels, feelings of invalidation, and helplessness about their insomnia. CONCLUSIONS Adolescents with insomnia offer a unique perspective that should inform patient-centered research and care. There is a need for heightened screening and awareness about insomnia as a condition that causes significant distress and impairment for adolescents. To provide validating care, providers should recognize the multifaceted causes of insomnia.

Abstract
Introduction Sleep is associated with psychiatric disorders. However, their causality remains unknown. Methods The study explored the causal relationship between seven sleep parameters (sleep duration, insomnia, sleep apnea, chronotype, daytime dozing, napping during the day, and snoring) and three psychiatric disorders including major depressive disorder (MDD), schizophrenia, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) using two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR). Genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary data for sleep parameters were obtained from the United Kingdom biobank, FinnGen biobank, and EBI databases. MR-Egger, weighted median, inverse-variance weighted (IVW), simple mode, weighted mode, maximum likelihood, penalized weighted median, and IVW(fixed effects) were used to perform the MR analysis. The heterogeneity was detected by Cochran's Q statistic. The horizontal pleiotropy was detected by MR Egger. The sensitivity was investigated by the leave-one-out analysis. Results Insomnia (OR = 2.02, 95%CI = 1.34-3.03, p = 0.001, False-discovery rate (FDR) corrected p-value = 0.011) and napping during the day (OR = 1.81, 95%CI = 1.34-2.44, FDR corrected p-value<0.001) were associated with an increased risk of MDD. Longer sleep duration (OR = 2.20, 95%CI = 1.24-3.90, FDR corrected p-value = 0.049) had an association with the increased risk of schizophrenia, while daytime dozing (OR = 4.44, 95%CI = 1.20-16.41, corrected p-value = 0.088)and napping during the day (OR = 2.11, 95%CI = 1.11-4.02, FDR corrected p-value = 0.088) had a suggestive association with an increased risk of schizophrenia. Longer sleep duration had a suggestive association with a decreased risk of ADHD (OR = 0.66, 95%CI = 0.42-0.93, FDR corrected p-value = 0.088). Conclusion This study provides further evidence for a complex relationship between sleep and psychiatric disorders. Our findings highlight the potential benefits of addressing sleep problems in the prevention of psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Approximately 7.6% of children are diagnosed with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and sleep impairments affect 25-85%. There is a noticeable lack of research on girls and sex differences. The aim of this study was to examine sex differences in children with uncomplicated ADHD and sleep problems. METHODS Cross-sectional baseline data were retrieved from a randomized controlled trial with weighted blankets (55 boys and 41 girls, 6-14 years) on a cohort recently diagnosed with uncomplicated ADHD and sleep problems. Differences between boys and girls in ADHD symptoms, objectively and subjectively measured sleep, anxiety, and functioning were examined via parent- or self-reported validated instruments. RESULTS Girls reported significantly lower (worse) satisfaction with well-being, life overall, and school, but not for family. Parents reported more sleep anxiety and night-time wakings among boys, but no sex differences in other measures and also not in self-reported measures or objective sleep measures. Children who reported worry, sadness, or unhappiness had more sleep problems. CONCLUSIONS Boys with ADHD and sleep problems may need support with sleep-related anxiety and night-time wakings, while girls may require support with overall functioning. Additionally, children who express feelings of worry, sadness, or unhappiness alongside their ADHD symptoms should have attention given to their sleep.

Abstract
Introduction Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) affects up to 5% of the population and is characterised by symptoms of impulsivity, hyperactivity and inattention. These symptoms are significantly impairing and carry additional risks for children and adults with ADHD, including negative mental health (e.g. depression), physical health (e.g. obesity) and societal outcomes (e.g. imprisonment, divorce). Very few studies have attempted to synthesise these risks in one publication due to the breadth of evidence published on the adverse outcomes of ADHD. Methods An umbrella review was performed to identify reviews (systematic, meta-analysis and narrative) that investigate the risks arising from having ADHD. We conducted a narrative synthesis of the findings and conducted a quality review of the included publications. Results Upon searching five databases, 16,675 records were identified. Of these, 125 reviews met the criteria for inclusion. A narrative synthesis of these findings highlighted three key domains of risks associated with ADHD: mental health, physical health, social and lifestyle. Most reviews were of good and moderate quality. Discussion This review highlights the many risks associated with having ADHD, beyond its three key symptom domains and the impact of the condition on daily functioning. Abstract
Adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often experience greater sleep difficulties compared to those without. However, findings are mixed, and other mental health conditions are often overlooked. This study aimed to examine the relationship between sleep problems, ADHD, and other mental health conditions in a sample of adolescents. Data from 373 adolescents aged 10-19 years was used as part of the wider 'Healthy Brain Network' study, which targets children and adolescents experiencing mental health and neurodevelopmental difficulties. Mental health conditions were assessed via a comprehensive assessment. Sleep was measured by self- and parent-report, as well as via up to a month of actigraphy data. Actigraphy data were analysed using mixed-methods modelling, while subjective sleep data were analysed using multiple regression. Subjectively-reported sleep was generally worse in adolescents who had ADHD and other mental health conditions compared to those with ADHD but no other conditions. There were no associations between ADHD status and objective sleep measures or self-reported measures, but a significant association was found between ADHD status and parent-reported sleep difficulties, even when accounting for other conditions. Parent-reported sleep problems were associated not only with ADHD, but also with anxiety, depression, and externalising disorders. The strength of association between ADHD and sleep problems is potentially not as strong as previously thought when considering the role of other mental health conditions. Clinicians should consider the role of other mental health conditions when sleep problems are present, and vice versa. The study also highlights the importance of comprehensive, multi-informant assessment of mental health conditions, including sleep.

Insomnia and related sleep disturbances are prevalent among youth and are associated with adverse consequences, including poorer psychiatric functioning. Behavioral sleep interventions, ranging from brief educational interventions to behavioral therapies (cognitive behavior therapy-insomnia), are associated with positive outcomes for pediatric sleep health. In addition, sleep interventions may improve psychiatric health for children and adolescents with neurodevelopmental and internalizing disorders. Additional research is necessary to clarify the efficacy of these interventions over the long-term and across demographic groups; however, evidence suggests incorporating behavioral sleep strategies may prove beneficial to pediatric patients with sleep disturbances and related psychiatric complaints.

Abstract
Sleep disturbances are highly prevalent among children with neurodevelopmental disorders, like Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention-Deficit/Hiperactivity Disorder (ADHD). The first objective of this study is to examine the differences in sleep problems between a group of children with ASD without intellectual disabilities, a group with ADHD and a typically developing (TD) group. A second objective is aimed at analyzing the effects of sleep problems and symptom severity on their communication skills. Participants were 122 children between 7 and 12 years old distributed in three groups: 32 TD children, 47 children with ASD and 43 children with ADHD, matched on age and intelligence. Parents completed different questionnaires that measured sleep disturbances and communication skills. Findings show significant differences between the clinical groups and the TD group in most types of sleep disorders. Moreover, the group with ADHD showed significantly more sleep breathing disorders and hyperhidrosis in comparison with ASD and TD, as well as more total sleep problems. In contrast to ASD, the predictive power of sleep problems on communication difficulties was greater in the group with ADHD. The results of the mediation analysis indicate that in both groups, sleep problems partially mediate the relationship between symptoms and communication. This investigation highlights the need of considering sleep disorders when assessing communication skills in ASD and ADHD, given its indirect influence in this domain. Understanding the sleep dysfunctions of both conditions and their repercussions is crucial to develop adjusted interventions.

Abstract
Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have been important for characterizing the genetic component and enhancing our understanding of the biological aetiology of both neuropsychiatric disorders and sleep-related phenotypes such as chronotype, which is our preference for morning or evening time. Mendelian randomization (MR) is a post-GWAS analysis that is used to infer causal relationships between potential risk factors and outcomes. MR uses genetic variants as instrumental variants for exposures to study the effect on outcomes. This review details the main results from GWAS of neuropsychiatric disorders and sleep-related phenotypes, and the application of MR to investigate their bidirectional relationship. The main results from MR studies of neuropsychiatric disorders and sleep-related phenotypes are summarized. These MR studies have identified 37 causal relationships between neuropsychiatric disorders and sleep-related phenotypes. MR studies identified evidence of a causal role for five neuropsychiatric disorders and symptoms (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, bipolar disorder, depressive symptoms, major depressive disorder and schizophrenia) on sleep-related phenotypes and evidence of a causal role for five sleep-related phenotypes (daytime napping, insomnia, morning person, long sleep duration and sleep duration) on risk for neuropsychiatric disorders. These MR results show a bidirectional relationship between neuropsychiatric disorders and sleep-related phenotypes and identify potential risk factors for follow-up studies.

Abstract
Introduction The externalizing disorders of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), and conduct disorder (CD) are common in adolescence and are strong predictors of adult psychopathology. While treatable, substantial diagnostic overlap complicates intervention planning. Understanding which factors predict the onset of each disorder and disambiguating their different predictors is of substantial translational interest. Materials and methods We analyzed 5,777 multimodal candidate predictors from children aged 9-10 years and their parents in the ABCD cohort to predict the future onset of ADHD, ODD, and CD at 2-year follow-up. We used deep learning optimized with an innovative AI algorithm to jointly optimize model training, perform automated feature selection, and construct individual-level predictions of illness onset and all prevailing cases at 11-12 years and examined relative predictive performance when candidate predictors were restricted to only neural metrics. Results Multimodal models achieved ~86-97% accuracy, 0.919-0.996 AUROC, and ~82-97% precision and recall in testing in held-out, unseen data. In neural-only models, predictive performance dropped substantially but nonetheless achieved accuracy and AUROC of ~80%. Parent aggressive and externalizing traits uniquely differentiated the onset of ODD, while structural MRI metrics in the limbic system were specific to CD. Psychosocial measures of sleep disorders, parent mental health and behavioral traits, and school performance proved valuable across all disorders. In neural-only models, structural and functional MRI metrics in subcortical regions and cortical-subcortical connectivity were emphasized. Overall, we identified a strong correlation between accuracy and final predictor importance. Conclusion Deep learning optimized with AI can generate highly accurate individual-level predictions of the onset of early adolescent externalizing disorders using multimodal features. While externalizing disorders are frequently co-morbid in adolescents, certain predictors were specific to the onset of ODD or CD vs. ADHD. To our knowledge, this is the first machine learning study to predict the onset of all three major adolescent externalizing disorders with the same design and participant cohort to enable direct comparisons, analyze >200 multimodal features, and include many types of neuroimaging metrics. Future study to test our observations in external validation data will help further test the generalizability of these findings.

Abstract
Sleep problems and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are interrelated during childhood and preadolescence. The objective of this work is assessing if sleep problems at ages 8-9 represent an alarm sign for presenting ADHD problems at ages 10-11 in three cohorts from INMA Study. Participants were 1244 children from Gipuzkoa, Sabadell, and Valencia cohorts. Sleep problems were assessed (ages 8-9) with the sleep items of the Child's Behaviour Checklist (CBCL), and ADHD problems were collected through the Conner's Parent Rating Scales-Revised: Short Form (CPRS-R:S) (age 10-11). Minimally and fully adjusted negative binomial models were fitted for each CPRS-R:S scale. Linearity of the relationship was assessed with generalized additive models (cubic smoothing splines with 2, 3, and 4 knots). For sensitivity analyses, children with previous symptoms, those born preterm and small for gestational age, and cases with extreme values, were excluded. Sleep problems presented IRR (95% CI) of 1.14 (1.10-1.19), 1.20 (1.14-1.26), 1.18 (1.11-1.25), and 1.18 (1.13-1.23) for opposition, inattention, hyperactivity, and ADHD scales, respectively. Fully adjusted models slightly decreased the IRR, but the association remained similar and significant. Sensitivity analyses showed similar results to fully adjusted models with only hyperactivity shown a slight decrease on significance (p = 0.051) when ADHD cases at age 9 were excluded. Conclusion: Sleep problems are an alarm sign for later neurodevelopment problems such as ADHD. Healthcare systems could take advantage implementing policies to pay special attention on the sleep habits and sleep hygiene. This could contribute to add evidence to public health programmes such as the Healthy Child Programme.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) are often accompanied by sleep problems influencing social, emotional and cognitive functioning in everyday activities. AIM The aim of this study was to investigate whether the use of a weighted blanket has a positive impact on sleep and everyday activities in individuals with ADHD and/or ASD. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study included 85 individuals diagnosed with ADHD and/or ASD, 48 children aged ≤17 (57%) and 37 adults ≥18 years (44%), who were prescribed with a weighted blanket. The participants responded via a telephone interview. RESULTS Findings demonstrated that a weighted blanket improved abilities related to falling asleep, sleeping the whole night, and relaxing during the day. Using a weighted blanket improved morning/evening daily routine, including preparing/going to sleep and waking up in the morning. CONCLUSIONS Weighted blankets showed positive impact on falling asleep, sleeping the whole night, and relaxing during the day, and they were used frequently by children and adults with ADHD and/or ASD. Findings indicate that a weighted blanket improved morning/evening routine, however this research area needs further investigation using both subjective and objective parameters.

Abstract
Background The negative effects of insomnia on adolescents' development, academic performance, and quality of life place a burden on families, schools, and society. As one of the most important research directions for insomnia, adolescent insomnia has significant research value, social value, and practical significance. Unfortunately, there is no bibliometric analysis in this field of study. This study aims to analyze published articles using bibliometrics, summarize the current research progress and hot topics in this field systematically and exhaustively, and predict the future direction and trend of research. Methods For this study, the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) database was searched between 2002 and 2022 for publications related to adolescent insomnia. The R-bibliometrix, VOSViewer, and CiteSpace software were utilized for bibliometric analysis. Results This investigation included 2468 publications from 3102 institutions in 87 countries, led by China and the United States. This field of research has entered a period of rapid development since 2017. The journal with the most publications on adolescent insomnia is Sleep, which is also the most co-cited journal. American Journal of Psychology has the highest impact factor among the top 10 journals. These papers were written by 10605 authors; notably, Liu Xianchen emerged as the author with the highest frequency of publications, while Mary A. Carskadon was the most frequently co-cited author. Mental health and comorbid diseases were the main research directions in this field. "Depression," "anxiety," "mental health," "COVID-19," "stress," "quality of life," "heart rate variability," and "attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder" were hot spots and trends in this field at the current moment. Conclusion The research on adolescent insomnia has social value, research value, and research potential; its development is accelerating, and an increasing number of researchers are focusing on it. This study summarized and analyzed the development process, hot spots, and trends of adolescent insomnia research using bibliometric analysis, which identified the current hot topics in this field and predicted the development trend for the future.

Abstract
Background Thought disorder (TD) is a sensitive and specific marker of risk for schizophrenia onset. Specifying factors that predict TD onset in adolescence is important to early identification of youth at risk. However, there is a paucity of studies prospectively predicting TD onset in unstratified youth populations. Study Design We used deep learning optimized with artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze 5,777 multimodal features obtained at 9-10 years from youth and their parents in the ABCD study, including 5,014 neural metrics, to prospectively predict new onset TD cases at 11-12 years. The design was replicated for all prevailing TD cases at 11-12 years. Study Results Optimizing performance with AI, we were able to achieve 92% accuracy and F1 and 0.96 AUROC in prospectively predicting the onset of TD in early adolescence. Structural differences in the left putamen, sleep disturbances and the level of parental externalizing behaviors were specific predictors of new onset TD at 11-12 yrs, interacting with low youth prosociality, the total parental behavioral problems and parent-child conflict and whether the youth had already come to clinical attention. More important predictors showed greater inter-individual variability. Conclusions This study provides robust person-level, multivariable signatures of early adolescent TD which suggest that structural differences in the left putamen in late childhood are a candidate biomarker that interacts with psychosocial stressors to increase risk for TD onset. Our work also suggests that interventions to promote improved sleep and lessen parent-child psychosocial stressors are worthy of further exploration to modulate risk for TD onset.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at elevated risk of a range of difficulties, among which emotion regulation, peer and co-occurring mental health problems are prominent challenges. To better support adolescents with ADHD, ecologically valid interventions that can be embedded in daily life to target the most proximal antecedents of these challenges are needed. Ecological momentary assessment (EMA) designs are ideally suited to meeting this need. METHODS AND ANALYSES In the mental health in the moment ADHD study, we will use an EMA design to capture the daily life experiences of approximately 120 adolescents aged 11-14 years with a clinical diagnosis of ADHD and the same number of age-matched and gender-matched peers without a diagnosis of ADHD. We will combine this with comprehensive information gathered from online surveys. Analysing the data using techniques such as dynamic structural equation modelling, we will examine, among other research questions, the role of emotion regulation and peer problems in mediating the links between characteristics of ADHD and commonly co-occurring outcomes such as anxiety, depression and conduct problems. The results can help inform interventions to support improved peer functioning and emotion regulation for adolescents with ADHD. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This study received a favourable ethical opinion through the National Health Service ethical review board and the University of Edinburgh PPLS Research Ethics panel. The results will be disseminated through journal publications, conferences and seminar presentations and to relevant stakeholders, such as those with ADHD, their families and clinicians.

Abstract
Background Adolescence is characterized by an increase in the rate of sleep problems, which might be even more pronounced in adolescents with ADHD. This systematic review with meta-analysis aimed to compare sleep in adolescents with and without ADHD, including sleep parameters, both subjectively and objectively measured, sleep problems and sleep hygiene. Methods Medline, CINAHL, PsycINFO, EMBASE, ERIC, Web of Science, and PubMed databases were searched for studies with case-control designs (published between 1980 and 2022) directly comparing sleep in adolescents (12-25 years) with ADHD to typically developing controls. Standardized mean differences were calculated and a random-effects model was implemented using RevMan. Results Overall, 6974 titles/abstracts and 205 full texts were screened, resulting in 13 eligible studies. The sample sizes range from 35 to 9846 with in total 2465 adolescents with ADHD and 18,417 controls. The data suggests that adolescents with ADHD report significantly more disturbed subjective sleep parameters (e.g., total sleep time; n = 7, SMD = 0.47, p < .001) and experience more sleep problems compared to typically developing peers (e.g., daytime sleepiness; n = 5, SMD = 0.54, p = .01). Only few studies objectively measured sleep and no significant differences were found between both groups (n = 3) in any parameter. Differences in sleep hygiene could not be examined due to a limited number of studies. Conclusions Adolescents with ADHD report significantly worsened subjectively sleep parameters and more sleep problems compared to controls. These findings are still preliminary as a limited number of studies was identified. Nevertheless, it is advised to routinely include sleep assessment in the ADHD diagnostic process. More research is needed with a focus on objective measurement and sleep hygiene in ADHD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Sleep problems are common amongst children and adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The purpose of this study was to investigate sleep problems in children and adolescents attending a specialist ADHD service. METHODS This was a cross-sectional online survey combined with a retrospective chart review, conducted in the ADHD Assessment, Diagnosis, Management, initiation, Research and Education (ADMiRE) service, the first public specialist ADHD service for young people in Ireland. Participants were caregivers of children and adolescents with ADHD attending ADMiRE. Sleep was assessed using The Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) and ADHD symptoms were assessed using an abbreviated version of the Swanson, Nolan and Pelham Teacher and Parent Rating Scale (SNAP-IV). Details regarding patient demographics, co-morbidities and medication were collected from patient records. RESULTS Eighty-four percent of young people scored above the clinical cut-off for a sleep disorder. The most frequently reported sleep problems were related to sleep onset and sleep duration, and 64% of respondents met the criteria for two or more sleep problems. ADHD severity was associated with greater sleep problems. Co-morbid physical, neurodevelopmental, and mental health disorders as well as stimulant use were not associated with greater sleep problems. CONCLUSION Sleep problems are very common amongst children and adolescents with ADHD. This study has demonstrated an association between more sleep problems and ADHD severity. These findings highlight the need for both effective ADHD treatment to ensure optional sleep in young people as well as effective interventions for sleep problems to prevent worsening of ADHD symptoms.

Abstract
Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a highly heritable neurodevelopmental disorder that affects approximately 5.3% of children and approximately 2.5% of adults. There is an intimate relationship between ADHD and sleep disturbance. Specifically, individuals carry a mutation in the core circadian gene CRY1 (c. 1657 + 3A > C), which results in the deletion of exon 11 expression in the CRY1 protein (CRY1Δ11), causing them to exhibit typical ADHD symptoms. However, the underlying mechanism is still elusive. In this study, we demonstrate that Cry1Δ11 (c. 1717 + 3A > C) mice showed ADHD-like symptoms, including hyperactivity, impulsivity, and deficits in learning and memory. A hyperactive cAMP signaling pathway was found in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) of Cry1Δ11 mice. We further demonstrated that upregulated c-Fos was mainly localized in dopamine D1 receptor-expressing medium spiny neurons (DRD1-MSNs) in the NAc. Neuronal excitability of DRD1-MSNs in the NAc of Cry1Δ11 mice was significantly higher than that of WT controls. Mechanistically, the CRY1Δ11 protein, in contrast to the WT CRY1 protein, failed to interact with the Gαs protein and inhibit DRD1 signaling. Finally, the DRD1 antagonist SCH23390 normalized most ADHD-like symptoms in Cry1Δ11 mice. Thus, our results reveal hyperactive DRD1 signaling as an underlying mechanism and therapeutic target for ADHD induced by the highly prevalent CRY1Δ11 mutation.

Abstract
The main objective of this study was to analyse the relationship and differential contribution of Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome (CDS) and sleep problems in children in different psychopathological measures. A total of 1133 participants (612 fathers/mothers and 521 children aged 7-13 years in Years 3-6 of Primary Education) completed the scales on CDS, sleep problems, depression (DEP), anxiety (ANX) and attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Similar and significant correlations were identified in the measures of CDS and sleep problems between fathers and mothers, obtaining a high coefficient between the two parents. However, weak correlations were found between fathers/mothers and children. The scores of CDS and the sleep disturbance scale for children (SDSC) significantly predicted the internalising measures and ADHD, especially between SDSC and DEP. It was confirmed that sleep problems had a greater presence in the group of children with the highest ADHD scores, and especially in CDS and ADHD jointly. To conclude, the data indicate the importance of sleep problems in understanding CDS and its relationship with other psychopathological measures, especially ADHD, although to a greater extent with internalising symptoms, especially DEP.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Sleep problems have been commonly observed in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The aim of current study was to investigate the impact of physical activity on sleep quality in young adolescent with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. METHOD A total of 33 children diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (mean age = 10.12 years) were randomized into intervention group and control group respectively. Mention the intervention detail here. Four specific sleep parameters, including sleep efficiency, sleep onset latency, sleep duration, and wake after sleep onset, were assessed before and after the intervention period in both groups. RESULTS Results revealed the significant improvements in sleep efficiency, sleep onset latency and wake after sleep onset in the intervention group but not in the control group. CONCLUSION Current findings highlight the benefits of PA on enhancing sleep quality among children with ADHD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) experience a more disrupted sleep and more sleep problems compared with typically developing adolescents. This is particularly concerning, because disrupted sleep is related to worsened clinical, neurocognitive and functional outcomes and leads to increased ADHD symptom impairment. Due to the specific difficulties adolescents with ADHD experience, a tailored sleep treatment is needed. Therefore, our lab developed a cognitive behavioural treatment-Sleep IntervEntion as Sympom Treatment for ADHD (SIESTA)-that integrates sleep training with motivational interviewing, and planning/organisational skills training with the aim of improving sleep problems in adolescents with ADHD. METHODS AND ANALYSIS A randomised, controlled, investigator-blinded monocentre trial is used to test whether SIESTA in combination with treatment as usual (TAU) for ADHD results in greater improvement in sleep problems than TAU only. Adolescents (aged 13-17 years) with ADHD and sleep problems are included. They complete measurements before treatment (pre-test), approximately 7 weeks after the pre-test (post-test), and approximately 3 months after the post-test (follow-up). The assessment includes questionnaires filled out by adolescents, parents and teachers. Additionally, sleep is assessed by actigraphy and sleep diaries at all time-points. Primary outcomes include objectively and subjectively measured sleep architecture (specified as total sleep time, sleep onset latency, sleep efficiency and number of awakenings), subjectively measured sleep problems and sleep hygiene. Secondary outcomes include ADHD symptoms, comorbidities and functional outcomes. To analyse the data, a linear mixed effects model will be used with an intent-to-treat approach. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION The study activities, informed consent and assent forms have been approved by the Ethical Committee Research UZ/KU Leuven (study ID S64197). If proven effective, the intervention will be implemented throughout Flanders. Therefore, an advisory board consisting of societal partners in healthcare is appointed at the start of the project, giving advice throughout the project and assistance with implementation afterwards. Abstract
The science of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is motivated by a translational goal - the discovery and exploitation of knowledge about the nature of ADHD to the benefit of those individuals whose lives it affects. Over the past fifty years, scientific research has made enormous strides in characterizing the ADHD condition and in understanding its correlates and causes. However, the translation of these scientific insights into clinical benefits has been limited. In this review, we provide a selective and focused survey of the scientific field of ADHD, providing our personal perspectives on what constitutes the scientific consensus, important new leads to be highlighted, and the key outstanding questions to be addressed going forward. We cover two broad domains - clinical characterization and, risk factors, causal processes and neuro-biological pathways. Part one focuses on the developmental course of ADHD, co-occurring characteristics and conditions, and the functional impact of living with ADHD - including impairment, quality of life, and stigma. In part two, we explore genetic and environmental influences and putative mediating brain processes. In the final section, we reflect on the future of the ADHD construct in the light of cross-cutting scientific themes and recent conceptual reformulations that cast ADHD traits as part of a broader spectrum of neurodivergence.

Abstract
The present study examined rates of sleep disorders and sleep medication use, and predictors of sleep disturbance in children with persistent tic disorders (PTD). Sixty-three parents of children aged 10 to 17 years with PTDs completed an internet survey evaluating sleep patterns and clinical symptoms. Insomnia (19.4%), nightmares (16.1%), and bruxism (13.1%) were the most commonly reported lifetime sleep disorders. Fifty-two percent endorsed current sleep medication use. Higher ADHD severity, overall life impairment, and female sex predicted greater sleep disturbance. Findings suggest the utility of clinical management of co-occurring ADHD and impairment to mitigate sleep disturbance in children with PTDs.

OBJECTIVE This study examined associations between objective and subjective sleep parameters, and mental health symptoms (internalizing symptoms, externalizing symptoms, and irritability) and whether these relationships differed for adolescents with and without ADHD. METHOD Participants were 373 adolescents aged 10 to 19 years (M = 13.21, SD = 2.37). Sleep was measured both via actigraphy and self- and parent-report scales. Mental health symptoms were measured via a range of validated measures. RESULTS Few relationships were detected when examining actigraphy variables. Subjective sleep parameters were associated with almost all mental health variables. Some relationships were moderated by ADHD status, generally consistent with stronger relationships between subjective sleep quality and mental health in the non-ADHD group. CONCLUSION Sleep problems, particularly subjective difficulties, are associated with a range of mental health outcomes, regardless of the presence of ADHD. Sleep problems may be a beneficial intervention target for adolescents experiencing mental health issues.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is growing evidence for the role of circadian factors in adolescents' sleep and academic adjustment, with greater evening preference being linked to poorer academic functioning. However, studies have yet to evaluate this association prospectively in adolescence, nor have studies examined daytime sleepiness as a putative mechanism linking evening preference to poor academic functioning. The current study used a multi-informant design to test the prospective association of evening circadian preference, daytime sleepiness, and academic functioning (e.g., global academic impairment and grades) across 2 years in adolescence. As evening circadian preference, sleepiness, and academic problems are elevated in adolescents with ADHD, we used a sample enriched for adolescents with ADHD and explored whether ADHD moderated effects. METHOD Participants were 302 adolescents (Mage = 13.17 years; 44.7% female; 81.8% White; 52% with ADHD). In the fall of eighth grade, adolescents reported on their circadian preference, and in the fall of ninth grade, adolescents and parents completed ratings of daytime sleepiness. In the middle of 10th grade, parents and teachers reported on adolescents' academic impairment and at the end of 10th grade, adolescents' grade point average (GPA) was obtained from school records. RESULTS Above and beyond covariates (e.g., adolescent sex, ADHD status, medication, sleep duration) and baseline academic impairment, greater self-reported evening preference in 8th grade predicted increased parent ratings of academic impairment in 10th grade indirectly via adolescent and parent ratings of daytime sleepiness in 9th grade. Furthermore, evening preference in 8th grade predicted greater teacher ratings of academic impairment and lower average GPA in 10th grade via parent ratings of daytime sleepiness in 9th grade, controlling for covariates and baseline GPA. ADHD status did not moderate indirect effects. CONCLUSION Findings underscore daytime sleepiness as a possible intervening mechanism linking evening preference to poor academic functioning across adolescence. Intervention studies are needed to evaluate whether targeting circadian preference and sleepiness improves academic functioning in adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The field's understanding of the association between sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT) and sleep is severely limited by the lack of multi-method and multi-informant research designs that move beyond global ratings, often focused on a limited number of sleep-related domains, such as daytime sleepiness. The current study begins to address these limitations by using actigraphy, daily sleep diary, and self- and parent-report global ratings of sleep in adolescents, a developmental period marked by changes in SCT, sleep, and circadian function. As SCT and sleep are also associated with ADHD symptoms, we tested these associations in a sample of adolescents with and without ADHD. METHODS Adolescents (N = 302; M age = 13.17 years, 44.7% female) with (n = 162) and without ADHD (n = 140) and parents completed global ratings of sleep and daytime sleepiness, and adolescents completed a measure of circadian preference. Adolescents also wore actigraphs for approximately two weeks, during which daily diaries were completed. RESULTS Above and beyond demographic characteristics (i.e., sex, race, and family income), pubertal development, medication use, and ADHD group status, adolescents' self-reported SCT symptoms were uniquely associated with shorter sleep duration and later sleep onset per both actigraphy and daily diary. SCT symptoms were also uniquely associated with longer sleep onset latency and poorer overall sleep (per daily diary), more sleep/wake problems and daytime sleepiness (per adolescent rating), more difficulties initiating and maintaining sleep (per parent rating), and later eveningness preference (per adolescent rating). Nearly all significant effects remained in sensitivity analyses controlling for adolescent- or parent-reported ADHD symptom dimensions. CONCLUSIONS Findings provide the strongest evidence to date for SCT being uniquely linked to poorer sleep, greater daytime sleepiness, and a later evening circadian preference across subjective and objective measures. Longitudinal studies are needed to evaluate predictive and bidirectional associations.

Abstract
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is consistently associated with a host of social problems, such as victimization and difficulties in maintaining close friendships. These problems are not limited to offline relations but also manifest in the online social world, as previous research shows that ADHD is associated with problematic use of social media. Given the ubiquitous nature of social media, the goal of the current review is to understand why adolescents with ADHD demonstrate more problematic social media use than their typically developing peers. To this end, we provide a narrative review on the evidence for the link between ADHD and social media use, and consequently present an integrative framework, which encompasses neurobiological mechanisms (i.e., imbalance theory of brain development and dual pathway model of ADHD) and social mechanisms, including influences from peers and parents. We conclude that empirical work shows most consistent evidence for the link between problematic social media use and ADHD (symptoms), while intensity of social media use is also associated with several other behaviors and outcomes. Finally, we hypothesize how existing interventions for ADHD may work on the identified mechanisms and provide at-hand clinical recommendations for therapists working with adolescents with ADHD who exhibit problematic social media use.

Abstract
Background Young people living with 22q11.2 Deletion Syndrome (22q11.2DS) are at increased risk of schizophrenia, intellectual disability, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). In common with these conditions, 22q11.2DS is also associated with sleep problems. We investigated whether abnormal sleep or sleep-dependent network activity in 22q11.2DS reflects convergent, early signatures of neural circuit disruption also evident in associated neurodevelopmental conditions. Methods In a cross-sectional design, we recorded high-density sleep EEG in young people (6-20 years) with 22q11.2DS (n=28) and their unaffected siblings (n=17), quantifying associations between sleep architecture, EEG oscillations (spindles and slow waves) and psychiatric symptoms. We also measured performance on a memory task before and after sleep. Results 22q11.2DS was associated with significant alterations in sleep architecture, including a greater proportion of N3 sleep and lower proportions of N1 and REM sleep than in siblings. During sleep, deletion carriers showed broadband increases in EEG power with increased slow-wave and spindle amplitudes, increased spindle frequency and density, and stronger coupling between spindles and slow-waves. Spindle and slow-wave amplitudes correlated positively with overnight memory in controls, but negatively in 22q11.2DS. Mediation analyses indicated that genotype effects on anxiety, ADHD and ASD were partially mediated by sleep EEG measures. Conclusions This study provides a detailed description of sleep neurophysiology in 22q11.2DS, highlighting alterations in EEG signatures of sleep which have been previously linked to neurodevelopment, some of which were associated with psychiatric symptoms. Sleep EEG features may therefore reflect delayed or compromised neurodevelopmental processes in 22q11.2DS, which could inform our understanding of the neurobiology of this condition and be biomarkers for neuropsychiatric disorders. Abstract
OBJECTIVE An open trial tested the feasibility, acceptability, and preliminary effectiveness of a behavioral sleep intervention in adolescents with ADHD. METHOD Fourteen adolescents (ages 13-17 years; 50% male) with ADHD and co-occurring sleep problems received the cognitive-behavioral-based Transdiagnostic Sleep and Circadian Intervention for Youth (TranS-C). Adolescent, parent, and teacher ratings, actigraphy, and daily sleep diaries were collected at pre-intervention, post-intervention, and 3-month follow-up. RESULTS Adolescents experienced moderate to large improvements in sleep, mental health symptoms, and daily life executive functioning from pre-treatment to post-treatment, and improvements were generally maintained at 3 months. Pre-intervention, 71.4% of adolescents were classified as poor sleepers and this was reduced to 21.4% and 28.6% at post-treatment and follow-up, respectively. CONCLUSION This study provides strong preliminary evidence that TranS-C improves sleep and associated outcomes in adolescents with ADHD and co-occurring sleep problems. A randomized controlled trial is needed to rigorously test the efficacy of TranS-C in this population.

Abstract
Stimulants are widely prescribed to manage attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in adults. Stimulants promote wakefulness and can produce insomnia side effects. We hypothesized that systematic studies of sleep effects would reveal patterns of sleep impairment that may be important for clinicians to monitor and manage. We conducted a review and analysis of studies that measured sleep systematically during stimulant treatment in adults. We identified nine studies that met our search criteria, including four double-blind placebo-controlled studies. All studies recorded self-report subjective sleep quality data, three studies collected actigraphy data, and three studies collected polysomnography data. One study found better subjective sleep quality under open-label treatment conditions. Both polysomnography studies found improvement in aspects of sleep patterns. Two of the actigraphy studies suggested that adults receiving stimulant treatment may have less movement during sleep, and one showed reduction in amount of sleep. Further research could inform best practices for maintaining sleep quality during stimulant treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep problems, altered sleep patterns and mental health difficulties often co-occur in the pediatric population. Different assessment methods for sleep exist, however, many studies only use one measure of sleep or focus on one specific mental health problem. In this population-based study, we assessed different aspects of sleep and mother-reported mental health to provide a broad overview of the associations between reported and actigraphic sleep characteristics and mental health. METHODS This cross-sectional study included 788 children 10-11-year-old children (52.5% girls) and 344 13-14-year-old children (55.2% girls). Mothers and children reported on the sleep of the child and wrist actigraphy was used to assess the child's sleep patterns and 24 h activity rhythm. Mental health was assessed via mother-report and covered internalizing, externalizing and a combined phenotype of internalizing and externalizing symptoms, the dysregulation profile. RESULTS Higher reported sleep problems were related to more symptoms of mental health problems in 10-11- and 13-14-year-old adolescents, with standardized ß-estimates ranging between 0.11 and 0.35. There was no association between actigraphy-estimated sleep and most mental health problems, but earlier sleep onset was associated with more internalizing problems (ß = - 0.09, SE = 0.03, p-value = 0.002), and higher intra-daily variability of the 24 h activity rhythm was associated with more dysregulation profile symptoms at age 10-11 (ß = 0.11, SE = 0.04, p-value = 0.002). DISCUSSION Reported sleep problems across informants were related to all domains of mental health problems, providing evidence that sleep can be an important topic to discuss for clinicians seeing children with mental health problems. Actigraphy-estimated sleep characteristics were not associated with most mental health problems. The discrepancy between reported and actigraphic sleep measures strengthens the idea that these two measures tap into distinct constructs of sleep.

Abstract
We examined perceived stress and sleep problems in adolescent ADHD and whether this varies as a function of ADHD presentation and sex. Further, we mapped structural associations between ADHD symptoms, comorbid symptoms, perceived stress, and sleep problems. Participants were 306 adolescents aged 13-19 years (66.8% females, 193 had an ADHD diagnosis, 113 were controls). Parents rated ADHD symptoms, all other constructs were self-rated. Adolescents with ADHD had elevated levels of perceived stress and sleep problems. Girls with ADHD reported the highest levels of perceived stress. Emotional symptoms mediated the effect of inattention whereas conduct problems mediated the effect of hyperactivity/impulsivity on stress and sleep. Perceived stress and sleep problems should be considered when mapping ADHD-related problems. Comorbid symptoms are potential intervention targets that may increase treatment response.
