Atmospheric Occurrence of Organochlorine Pesticides and Inhalation Cancer Risk in Urban Areas at Southeast Brazil

Atmospheric occurrences and bioavailability health risk of PAHs and their derivatives surrounding a non-ferrous metal smelting plant

Non-ferrous metal smelting emits large amounts of organic compounds into the atmosphere. Herein, 20 parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PPAHs), 9 nitrated PAHs (NPAHs), 14 chlorinated PAHs (ClPAHs), and 6 alkylated PAHs (APAHs) in atmospheric samples from a typical non-ferrous metal smelting plant (NMSP) and residential areas were detected. In NMSP, benzo[a]pyrene, dibenz[a,h]anthracene, 6-nitrochrysene, 9-chlorofluorene, and 1-methylfluorene were the predominant compounds in the particulate phase, while phenanthrene constituted 57.3% in the gaseous phase. The concentration of PAHs in residential areas around NMSP was 1.8 times higher than that in the control area. Additionally, there was a significant negative correlation between the concentration and the distance from the NMSP. In terms of health risks, although the skin penetration coefficient of PM2.5 is smaller than that of the gaseous phase, dermal absorption of PM2.5 posed a greater threat to the population, the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) of NMSP was 1.8 × 10-4. After considering bioavailability, BILCR decreased by 1-2 orders of magnitude in different regions, and dermal absorption decreased more than inhalation intake. Nevertheless, the dermal absorption of PM2.5 in NMSP still presents a probable carcinogenic risk. This study provides a necessary reference for the subsequent control of NMSP contamination.

Assessing pesticides in the atmosphere: A global study on pollution, human health effects, monitoring network and regulatory performance

Pesticides are widely used in agriculture, but their impact on the environment and human health is a major concern. While much attention has been given to their presence in soil, water, and food, there have been few studies on airborne pesticide pollution on a global scale. This study aimed to assess the extent of atmospheric pesticide pollution in countries worldwide and identify regional differences using a scoring approach. In addition to analyzing the health risks associated with pesticide pollution, we also examined agricultural practices and current air quality standards for pesticides in these countries. The pollution scores varied significantly among the countries, particularly in Europe. Asian and Oceanic countries generally had higher scores compared to those in the Americas, suggesting a relatively higher level of air pollution caused by pesticides in these regions. It is worth noting that the current pollution levels, as assessed theoretically, pose minimal health risks to humans. However, studies in the literature have shown that excessive exposure to pesticides present in the atmosphere has been associated with various health problems, such as cancer, neuropsychiatric disorders, and other chronic diseases. Interestingly, European countries had the highest overall pesticide application intensities, but this did not necessarily correspond to higher atmospheric pesticide pollution scores. Only a few countries have established air quality standards specifically for pesticides. Furthermore, pollution scores across states in the USA were investigated and the global sampling sites were mapped. The findings revealed that the scores varied widely in the USA and the current sampling sites were limited or unevenly distributed in some countries, particularly the Nordic countries. These findings can help global relevant environmental agencies to set up comprehensive monitoring networks. Overall, the present research highlights the need to create a pesticide monitoring system and increase efforts to enhance pesticide regulation, ensure consistency in standards, and promote international cooperation.

Atmospheric occurrences and health risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives in a typical coking facility and surrounding areas

Coking facilities release large quantities of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives into the ambient air. Here we examined the profiles, spatial distributions, and potential sources of atmospheric PAHs and their derivatives in an industrial coking plant and its surrounding environment (gaseous and particulate). The mean concentrations of PAHs, nitrated PAHs (NPAHs), chlorinated PAHs (ClPAHs), and brominated PAHs (BrPAHs) in the air of the coking facility were 923, 23.8, 16.7 and 4.25 ng m-³, respectively, 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than those in the surrounding area and the control area. Linear regressions between contaminant concentrations and distance from the coking facility suggested that the concentrations of PAHs (r2 = 0.82, p < 0.05), NPAHs (r2 = 0.77, p < 0.01), and BrPAHs (r2 = 0.62, p < 0.01) were negatively correlated with distance. Additionally, the particle-bound fractions of PAHs and their derivatives were significantly correlated with their molecular weights (p < 0.01). Based on the calculation of the gas/particle partitioning coefficients (log KP) for PAHs and their derivatives and the corresponding subcooled liquid vapor pressures (log PL), the slope values for PAHs, NPAHs, ClPAHs, and BrPAHs ranged from -1 to -0.6, indicating that deposition of PAHs and their derivatives occurred through both adsorption and absorption. Five emissions sources were identified by positive matrix factorization (PMF), including coking emissions, oil pollution, industrial and combustion sources, secondary formation, and traffic emissions, with coking emissions accounting for more than 50% of total emissions. Furthermore, the results of the health risks assessment suggested that atmospheric PAHs and their derivatives in the coke plant and surrounding area negatively impacted human health.

Review of scientific literature on available methods of assessing organochlorine pesticides in the environment

Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are persistent organic pollutants (POPs) widely used in agriculture and industry, causing serious health and ecological consequences upon exposure. This review offers a thorough overview of OCPs analysis emphasizing the necessity of ongoing work to enhance the identification and monitoring of these POPs in environmental and human samples. The benefits and drawbacks of the various OCPs analysis techniques including gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), gas chromatography-electron capture detector (GC-ECD), and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) are discussed. Challenges associated with validation and optimization criteria, including accuracy, precision, limit of detection (LOD), and limit of quantitation (LOQ), must be met for a method to be regarded as accurate and reliable. Suitable quality control measures, such as method blanks and procedural blanks, are emphasized. The LOD and LOQ are critical quality control measure for efficient quantification of these compounds, and researchers have explored various techniques for their calculation. Matrix interference, solubility, volatility, and partition coefficient influence OCPs occurrences and are discussed in this review. Validation experiments, as stated by European Commission in document SANTE/11813/2017, showed that the acceptance criteria for method validation of OCP analytes include ≤20 % for high precision, and 70-120 % for recovery. This may ultimately be vital for determining the human health risk effects of exposure to OCP and for formulating sensible environmental and public health regulations.

Airborne Pesticides from Agricultural Practices: A Critical Review of Pathways, Influencing Factors, and Human Health Implications

This critical review examines the release of pesticides from agricultural practices into the air, with a focus on volatilization, and the factors influencing their dispersion. The review delves into the effects of airborne pesticides on human health and their contribution to anthropogenic air pollution. It highlights the necessity of interdisciplinary research encompassing science, technology, public policy, and agricultural practices to effectively mitigate the risks associated with pesticide volatilization and spray dispersion. The text acknowledges the need for more research to understand the fate and transport of airborne pesticides, develop innovative application technologies, improve predictive modeling and risk assessment, and adopt sustainable pest management strategies. Robust policies and regulations, supported by education, training, research, and development, are crucial to ensuring the safe and sustainable use of pesticides for human health and the environment. By providing valuable insights, this review aids researchers and practitioners in devising effective and sustainable solutions for safeguarding human health and the environment from the hazards of airborne pesticides.

Cellulose Nanocrystals Induced Loose and Porous Graphite Phase Carbon Nitride/Porous Carbon Composites for Capturing and Determining of Organochlorine Pesticides from Water and Fruit Juice by Solid-Phase Microextraction

Herein, novel, loose, and porous graphite phase carbon nitride/porous carbon (g-C₃N₄@PC) composites were prepared by decorating cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs). The characterization results demonstrate that the as-prepared composites presented high specific surface areas, porous structures, and abundant chemical groups, with the modification of CNCs. In view of the unique advantages, g-C₃N₄@PC was used as the coating material for the solid-phase microextraction (SPME) of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in water and juice samples. The g-C₃N₄@PC-coated fibers showed better extraction efficiencies than commercial fibers (100/7 μm PDMS and PA) toward the OCPs, with the enrichment factors of the g-C₃N₄@PC-coated fibers 5-30 times higher than the latter. Using a gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) instrument, the g-C₃N₄@PC-coated fibers exhibited a gratifying analytical performance for determining low concentrations of OCPs, with a wide linear range (0.1-1600 ng L^-1 for water; 0.1-1000 ng L^-1 for juice), low limits of detection (0.0141-0.0942 ng L^-1 for water; 0.0245-0.0777 ng L^-1 for juice), and good reproducibility and repeatability in optimal conditions. The established method showed good sensitivity and recovery in the determination of OCPs in the water and fruit juice samples, which displayed broad prospects for analyzing organic pollutants from environmental samples.

Comparison of pollution status and source apportionment for PCBs and OCPs of indoor dust from an industrial city

In this study, the pollution status of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) was investigated in indoor and outdoor dust from three different functional areas of Hefei, China. The relationship between the concentrations of PCBs and OCPs and different influencing factors in dwellings was studied. The results showed that the concentrations of PCBs and OCPs were higher in samples from dwellings with higher smoking frequency, lower cleaning frequency, higher floors and smaller household size. The results of Spearman's correlation coefficient analysis indicated that PCBs and OCPs were not consistently associated with each other, while sources of low-chlorinated PCBs and high-chlorinated PCBs were different. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) shows the shape of indoor dust was a mixture of blocky, flocculated, spherical structures, and irregular shapes. The results of principal component analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization model (PMF) showed that the PCBs and OCPs of indoor dust came from both indoor and outdoor sources between local and regional transport. Carbon (δ¹³C) and Nitrogen (δ¹⁵N) stable isotope results indicate or show that the indoor dust (δ¹³C: - 24.37‰, δ¹⁵N: 6.88‰) and outdoor dust (δ¹³C: - 12.65‰, δ¹⁵N: 2.558‰) is derived from fossil fuel, coal combustion, road dust, fly ash, C4 biomass and soil. Potential source contribution factor (PSCF) and concentration weighted-trajectory analysis suggest that sources of pollutants were local and regional transport from surrounding provinces and marine emissions. The average daily dose (adult: 8.20E-04, children: 2.37E-03) of pollutants and the carcinogenic risks (adult: 1.23E-02, children: 2.65E-02) were relatively greater for children than adults. This study demonstrates the utility of SEM to characterize indoor dust morphology while combining PMF, PSCF, and stable isotope methods in identifying indoor PCBs and OCPs sources and regions.

Exposure to pesticides and breast cancer in the city of Petrópolis, Brazil

To investigate the association between pesticide use and breast cancer. A hospital-based case-control study was conducted in Petrópolis city, Brazil. The study data were obtained through interviews, and the magnitude of the association between self-reported pesticide exposure and breast cancer was determined using unconditional logistic regression. A higher estimated risk for breast cancer was found in women exposed to pesticides for 10 or more years, where this association was not statistically significant after adjusting for potential confounders (OR = 1.40; 95% CI 0.85-2.49). A positive statistically significant association was found between breast cancer and higher educational level or previous use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT), whereas having had 2 or more pregnancies to term proved a protective factor. Further studies elucidating the contribution of pesticide exposure to the development of breast cancer are needed, given that current findings in the literature are conflicting.

Persistent Organic Pollutant Levels in Maternal and Cord Blood Plasma and Breast Milk: Results from the Rio Birth Cohort Pilot Study of Environmental Exposure and Childhood Development (PIPA Study)

Levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) and organochlorine pesticides (OCP) were evaluated in the breast milk and maternal and umbilical cord blood of pregnant women and their newborns in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The concentration of 11 PCB and 17 OCP were measured in 135 samples of maternal, and 116 samples of cord blood plasma, as well as 40, 47, and 45 samples of breast milk at 1st, 3rd, and 6th months after birth, respectively, using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS-MS). Women were asked to answer an enrollment questionnaire with reproductive, lifestyle, residential and sociodemographic questions. The most commonly detected OCPs and PCBs in the maternal and cord blood were 4,4'-DDE; β-HCH; ɣ-HCH; and PCB 28. 4,4'-DDE was also the most commonly detected OCP in breast milk samples. Although not statistically significant, ∑DDT levels were higher among women with pregestational BMI ≥ 30, and who were non-white and older (age > 40). Newborns with an Apgar score ≤ 8 at minute 5 of life showed significantly higher levels of ∑DDT in the cord blood. Persistent OCPs and PCBs were still detected in maternal and umbilical cord blood and breast milk, even after decades of their banishment in Brazil. They may pose a risk to maternal, fetal and children's health.

Pesticides and Their Impairing Effects on Epithelial Barrier Integrity, Dysbiosis, Disruption of the AhR Signaling Pathway and Development of Immune-Mediated Inflammatory Diseases

The environmental and occupational risk we confront from agricultural chemicals increases as their presence in natural habitats rises to hazardous levels, building a major part of the exposome. This is of particular concern in low- and middle-income countries, such as Brazil, known as a leading producer of agricultural commodities and consumer of pesticides. As long as public policies continue to encourage the indiscriminate use of pesticides and governments continue to support this strategy instead of endorsing sustainable agricultural alternatives, the environmental burden that damages epithelial barriers will continue to grow. Chronic exposure to environmental contaminants in early life can affect crucial barrier tissue, such as skin epithelium, airways, and intestine, causing increased permeability, leaking, dysbiosis, and inflammation, with serious implications for metabolism and homeostasis. This vicious cycle of exposure to environmental factors and the consequent damage to the epithelial barrier has been associated with an increase in immune-mediated chronic inflammatory diseases. Understanding how the harmful effects of pesticides on the epithelial barrier impact cellular interactions mediated by endogenous sensors that coordinate a successful immune system represents a crucial challenge. In line with the epithelial barrier hypothesis, this narrative review reports the available evidence on the effects of pesticides on epithelial barrier integrity, dysbiosis, AhR signaling, and the consequent development of immune-mediated inflammatory diseases.

Spatiotemporal evaluation of organochlorine pesticide residues in bottom sediments of the Rio de Ondas hydrographic basin, western Bahia, Brazil

The Rio de Ondas Hydrographic Basin (ROHB), Bahia state, Brazil, is located in a region with abundant water resources and is highly impacted by intense agricultural activity. In such a scenario, the use of organochlorine pesticides can represent a potential risk to the aquatic environments, due to their persistence, high bioaccumulation capacity, and high toxicity. Thus, organochlorine pesticide residues in bottom sediment samples from rivers on eighteen sites distributed along the ROHB in the dry and rainy periods were analyzed by gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry. The validated method showed no matrix effect, recoveries ranging from 82% (β-HCB) to 118% (DDD), limits of detection between 0.003 ng g^-1 (α-HCH) and 0.011 ng g^-1 (DDT), limits of quantification of 0.010 ng g^-1 (α-HCH) to 0.036 ng g^-1 (DDT), repeatability with the highest relative standard deviation of 0.97% (α-hexachlorocyclohexane at 2.000 ng g^-1), and inter-day precision ranging from 10% (aldrin at 0.050 ng g^-1 and 0.600 ng g^-1 and α-endosulfan at 0.600 ng g^-1) to 25% (β-endosulfan at 0.050 ng g^-1). Although most compounds were banned since 1985, it was observed that their residues were widely distributed in the ROHB, with the total concentrations varying from 3.242 ng g^-1 (P02) to 12.052 ng g^-1 (P17) and from 0.313 ng g^-1 (P14) to 30.861 ng g^-1 (P13) in the dry and rainy periods, respectively, which may be related to historical contamination and/or prohibited use. Moreover, the spatiotemporal variation showed the highest concentrations of organochlorine pesticide residues in the rainy season, coinciding with the planting period.

Removal of lindane using electrokinetic soil flushing coupled with air stripping

This paper evaluates the remediation of soil spiked with lindane using a combined treatment consisting of electrokinetic soil flushing (EKSF) with air stripping to elucidate the main processes occurring in the soil when electric fields of 0.75 V cm−1 and 1.50 V cm−1 are applied. The results demonstrate that lindane is efficiently transported to the anodic and cathodic wells using flushing fluids containing sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). Additionally, an important amount is volatilized and stripped with the injected air. In the cathodic well, lindane is rapidly transformed into other species because of the strongly alkaline media. These other species are also found in the portions of soil next to this well, confirming the efficient transport of chlorinated organics with SDS. After 14 days of operation, nearly 50% of the spiked lindane can be removed from the soil. Operation with large electric fields does not improve the performance of the treatment technology and results in lower current intensities and electro-osmotic fluxes and in higher evaporated water, despite the water content in the soil matrix, indicating the coexistence of multiple inputs in these processes.

Impact of Pesticides on Human Health in the Last Six Years in Brazil

Every year, Brazil intensifies its activity in agriculture and, as a result, it has become one of the biggest consumers of pesticides in the world. The high rate of these substances raises environmental and human health concerns. Therefore, we collected papers from PubMed, Scopus, Scielo, and Web of Science databases, from 2015 to 2021. After a blind selection using the software Rayyan QCRI by two authors, 51 studies were included. Researchers from the South and the Southeast Brazilian regions contributed to most publications, from areas that concentrate agricultural commodity complexes. Among the pesticides described in the studies, insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides were the most frequent. The articles reported multiple toxic effects, particularly in rural workers. The results obtained can be used to direct policies to reduce the use of pesticides, and to protect the health of the population.

Dicationic Herbicidal Ionic Liquids Comprising Two Active Ingredients Exhibiting Different Modes of Action

In the framework of this study, dicationic herbicidal ionic liquids (HILs) containing tetramethylene-1,4-bis(decyldimethylammonium) and dodecylmethylene-1,12-bis(decyldimethylammonium), including two different herbicidal anions exhibiting different modes of action, were synthesized and characterized. One herbicide incorporated into the HILs was a tribenuron-methyl belonging to ALS inhibitors, while the second herbicidal anion was a synthetic auxin that acts as a growth regulator, namely 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetate (2,4-D), 2-(2,4-dichlorophenoxy)propionate, (2,4-DP), 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetate (2,4,5-T), 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetiate (MCPA), 2-(4-chloro-2-methylphenoxy)propionate (MCPP), and 4-chlorophenoxyacetate (4-CPA). The obtained products were found to be unstable and decomposed, which can be attributed to the presence of an additional methyl group within the sulfonylurea bridge of the tribenuron-methyl. The synthesized HILs exhibited good affinity with polar and semipolar solvents, with ethyl acetate and hexane as the only solvents that did not dissolve the HILs. Greenhouse tests demonstrated that most of the obtained HILs were more effective than the reference herbicide containing tribenuron-methyl. The length of the alkyl chain in the cation also influenced the effectiveness of the HILs. Better effects were observed for dodecylmethylene-1,12-bis(decyldimethylammonium) cations compared to tetramethylene-1,4-bis(decyldimethylammonium). Therefore, the novel dicatonic HILs showed to integrate the advent of the combination of the different herbicides into a single molecule, enhance herbicidal efficacy, and reduce the risk of weed resistance due to the various modes of action of the applied treatment.

Pollution profiles and human health risk assessment of atmospheric organophosphorus esters in an e-waste dismantling park and its surrounding area

Recycling e-waste has been recognized as an important emission source of organophosphate triesters (tri-OPEs) and organophosphate diesters (di-OPEs), but the presence of di-OPEs in atmosphere has not been studied. Herein, tri-OPEs and di-OPEs in atmosphere of an e-waste dismantling park and surrounding area in South China were monitored for three consecutive years. Thirteen tri-OPEs and seven di-OPEs were identified. In 2017, 2018, and 2019, tri-OPE concentrations in e-waste dismantling park were 1.30 × 10⁸, 4.60 × 10⁶, and 4.01 × 10⁷ pg/m³, while di-OPE concentrations were 1.14 × 10³, 1.10 × 10³, and 0.35 × 10³ pg/m³, respectively, which were much higher than the surrounding area. Tri-OPEs and di-OPEs generated during e-waste dismantling affected surrounding area through diffusion. Triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) and diphenyl phosphate (DPhP) were the predominant congeners of tri-OPEs and di-OPEs, respectively. Additionally, TPhP concentration was extremely higher than other tri-OPEs, so TPhP could be used as an indicator of e-waste dismantling. Spearman correlation analysis showed significant correlations between DPhP and TPhP (R² = 0.53, p < 0.01), bis-(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (BCIPP) and tris(2-chloropropyl) phosphate (TCIPP) (R² = 0.49, p < 0.01), as well as dibutyl phosphate (DBP) and tributyl phosphate (TBP) (R² = 0.53, p < 0.01), indicating that they had the same source. Further, non-carcinogenic risk of them to people via inhalation was acceptable and non-carcinogenic risk of tri-OPEs decreased year by year in surrounding area.

Effects of common environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals on zebrafish behavior

Environmental endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), a type of exogenous organic pollutants, are ubiquitous in natural aquatic environments. Therefor, this review focused on the use of the zebrafish as a model to explore the effect of different EDCs on behavior, as well as the molecular mechanisms that drive these effects. Furthermore, our study summarizes the current knowledge on the neuromodulatory effects of different EDCs in zebrafish. This study also reviews the current state of zebrafish behavior research, in addition to the potential mechanisms of single and mixed pollutant-driven behavioral dysregulation at the molecular level, as well as the applications of zebrafish behavior experiments for neuroscience research. This review broadens our understanding of the influence of EDCs on zebrafish behavior and provides guidance for future research.

Occurrence of pyrethroids in the atmosphere of urban areas of Southeastern Brazil: Inhalation exposure and health risk assessment

The occurrence of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) used decades ago for vector control in urban areas is still reported as a threat to human health. Pyrethroids emerged as a replacement for OCPs in sanitary campaigns and are currently the main insecticides used for vector control worldwide, with prominent use as agricultural and household insecticides, for veterinary and gardening purposes, and as wood preservative. This study aimed to assess the occurrence, seasonal variation, and potential sources of pyrethroids in ambient air of two urban regions of Southeastern Brazil, along with the potential health risks to local populations via inhalation exposure. Pyrethroids were sampled by polyurethane foam passive air samplers and their concentrations were determined by gas chromatography coupled with electron capture negative ionization mass spectrometry (GC/ECNI-MS). Atmospheric pyrethroid concentrations (hereinafter reported in pg m^-3) were considerably higher than those reported by previous studies worldwide. Cypermethrin (median: 2446; range: 461-15 125) and permethrin (655; 19-10 328) accounted for 95% of the total measured pyrethroids in ambient air. The remaining fraction comprised smaller amounts of bifenthrin (46; <limit of detection (LOD)-5171), deltamethrin (58; <LOD-564), phenothrin (7; <LOD-22) and fenvalerate (0.3; <LOD-3). Bifenthrin, deltamethrin and permethrin were linked to local sources, while cypermethrin, fenvalerate and phenothrin had more prominent regional contributions. In broad terms, most pyrethroids showed no clear seasonal trend. The concentrations and hazard quotients (HQs) showed the following order of occurrence and magnitude: urban > urban-industrial > background areas. HQs increased with decreasing age group, but deterministic and probabilistic estimates did not identify direct health risks for any group. Nevertheless, since only inhalation exposure was considered in this work, other pathways should be investigated to provide a more comprehensive risk assessment of the human exposure to pyrethroids.
