Abstract
The global cryopreservation market size rises exponentially due to increased demand for cell therapy-based products, assisted reproductive technology, and organ transplantation. Cryoprotectants (CPAs) are required to reduce ice-related damage, osmotic cell injury, and protein denaturation. Antioxidants are needed to hamper membrane lipid peroxidation under freezing stress, and antibiotics are added to the cryo-solutions to prevent contamination. The vitrification process for sized organs requires a high concentration of CPA, which is hardly achievable using conventional penetrating toxic CPAs like DMSO. Antifreeze peptides (AFpeps) are biocompatible CPAs leveraging inspiration from nature, such as freeze-tolerant and freeze-avoidant organisms, to circumvent logistic limitations in cryogenic conditions. This study aims to introduce the advances of AFpeps with cell-penetrating, antioxidant, and antimicrobial characteristics. We herein revisit the placement of AFpeps in the biobanking of cancer cells, immune cells, stem cells, blood cells, germ cells (sperms and oocytes), and probiotics. Implementing low-immunogenic AFpeps for allograft cryopreservation minimizes HLA mismatching risk after organ transplantation. Applying AFpeps to formulate bioinks with optimal rheology in extrusion-based 3D cryobiopriners expedites the bench-to-beside transition of bioprinted scaffolds. This study advocates that the fine-tuned synthetic or insect-derived AFpeps, forming round blunt-shape crystals, are biomedically broad-spectrum, and cell-permeable AFpeps from marine and plant sources, which result in sharp ice crystals, are appropriate for cryosurgery. Perspectives of the available room for developing peptide mimetics in favor of higher activity and stability and peptide-functionalized nanoparticles for enhanced delivery are delineated. Finally, antitumor immune activation by cryoimmunotherapy as an autologous in-vivo tumor lysate vaccine has been illustrated.

Abstract
Collagen and its hydrolysates have high bioavailability, good biocompatibility, biodegradability, and biological activity which has meant that they have been widely used in food, medicine, cosmetics, and other industries. Although the properties and applications of collagen have been reviewed recently, few studies have focused on aquatic collagen. To provide readers with a deeper understanding of aquatic collagen, this review addresses the structure and properties of aquatic collagen and compares them with mammalian collagen, as well as the differences between collagen, gelatin, and collagen peptides. In contrast to mammalian collagen, aquatic collagen prevents zoonotic diseases, reduces environmental pollution, improves the utilization of aquatic resources, and facilitates the extraction and separation of active oligopeptides. Additionally, methods for screening functional peptides using in vitro digestion have been introduced. Finally, the review focuses on the applications of collagen and its derivatives in food preservation (packaging films, coatings, additives, and antifreeze peptides), drug delivery (microcapsules, emulsions, nanoparticles, and hydrogels), nutrition, and healthcare.

Abstract
An endophytic actinomycetes, Streptomyces nanningensis, was -isolated from the leaves of Ilex pubescens Hook. et Arn. Five compounds were separated from the ethyl acetate extract of the fermentation broth of endophytic actinomycetes, and their structures were confirmed by utilising methods such as nuclear magnetic resonance, mass spectrometry, and literature references. These compounds were identified as Genistin (1), Esculetin (2), Ursolic acid (3), Chlorogenic acid (4), and Oleanolic acid (5). Compounds 1 and 4 showed inhibitory effects against Escherichia coli with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of 0.7815 mg/mL and 0.7815 mg/mL, respectively; Compound 4 demonstrated inhibitory effects against Candida albicans, with an MIC value of 0.7815 mg/mL. The results of in vitro antioxidant activity demonstrated that Compounds 1 and 4 exhibited scavenging activity against the DPPH free radical, with IC50 values of 125 and 63 μg/mL, respectively.

Abstract
The Atlantic salmon is an extremely popular fish for its nutritional value and unique taste among several fish species. Researchers are focusing on the utilization of Atlantic salmon waste for generating protein hydrolysates rich in peptides and amino acids and investigating their health benefits. Several technological approaches, including enzymatic, chemical, and the recently developed subcritical water hydrolysis, are currently used for the production of Atlantic salmon waste protein hydrolysates. Hydrolyzing various wastes, e.g., heads, bones, skin, viscera, and trimmings, possessing antioxidant, blood pressure regulatory, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory properties, resulting in applications in human foods and nutraceuticals, animal farming, pharmaceuticals, cell culture, and cosmetics industries. Furthermore, future applications, constraints several challenges associated with industrial hydrolysate production, including sensory, safety, and economic constraints, which could be overcome by suggested techno processing measures. Further studies are recommended for developing large-scale, commercially viable production methods, focusing on eradicating sensory constraints and facilitating large-scale application.

Abstract
The fisheries and aquaculture industry are known for generating substantial waste or by-products, often underutilized, or relegated to low-value purposes. However, this overlooked segment harbors a rich repository of valuable bioactive materials of which have a broad-spectrum of high-value applications. As the blue economy gains momentum and fisheries expand, sustainable exploitation of these aquatic resources is increasingly prioritized. In this review, we present a comprehensive overview of technology-enabled methods for extracting and transforming aquatic waste into valuable biomaterials and their recent advances in regenerative medicine applications, focusing on marine collagen, chitin/chitosan, calcium phosphate and bioactive-peptides. We discuss the inherent bioactive qualities of these "waste-to-resource" aquatic biomaterials and identify opportunities for their use in regenerative medicine to advance healthcare while achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

Abstract
Frozen surimi sol incline to protein oxidation, but the quality control strategies based on oxidation remain limited. Hence, the antioxidant and cryoprotective effects of γ-polyglutamic acid (γ-PGA) on freeze-thawed salt-dissolved myofibrillar protein (MP) sol were investigated. Results showed that γ-PGA could effectively regulate protein oxidation of MP sol during freeze-thawing with lower carbonyl contents and less oxidative cross-linking. Meanwhile, γ-PGA primely maintained sol protein structures, showing reduction of 15.28% of salt soluble protein contents at γ-PGA addition of 0.04% under unoxidized condition. Additionally, compared to the control group without oxidation treatment, cooking loss of heat-induced gel with 0.04% γ-PGA decreased by 47.19%, while gel strength obviously increased by 57.22% respectively. Overall, moderate γ-PGA addition (0.04%) could inhibit protein oxidation of sol, further improving frozen stability of sol through hydrogen bonds and hydrophobic interaction, but excessive γ-PGA was adverse to sol quality due to severe cross-linking between γ-PGA and MP.

Abstract
Marine-derived foods, often called blue foods, are promising sustainable alternatives to conventional food sources owing to their abundant amino acids and high protein content. Current treatments for hyperuricemia, a chronic condition attributed to purine metabolism disorders, are associated with various side effects. Novel peptide xanthine oxidase inhibitors have been discovered in the hydrolyzed products of marine fish and invertebrate proteins, which have demonstrated promising therapeutic potential by reducing uric acid levels in vitro and in vivo. This review explores the potential therapeutic effects of xanthine oxidase inhibitors derived from marine fish and invertebrates, summarizes the methods for extracting bioactive peptides from marine organisms, and emphasizes the impact of different proteases on the structure-activity relationship of bioactive peptides. The hypouricemic effects of these bioactive peptides warrant further verification. There is consensus on the in vitro chemical methods used to verify the xanthine oxidase inhibitory effects of these peptides. Considering several cell and animal model development strategies, this review summarizes several highly recognized modeling methods, proposes strategies to improve the bioavailability of bioactive peptides, and advocates for a diversified evaluation system. Although the screening and evaluation methods for antihyperuricemic peptides have been shown to be feasible across numerous studies, they are not optimal. This review examines the deficiencies in bioavailability, synthesis efficiency, and evaluation mechanisms in terms of their future development and proposes potential solutions to address these issues. This review provides a novel perspective for the exploration and application of marine-derived hypouricemic bioactive peptides.

Abstract
With the development of society and the improvement of people's health consciousness, the demand for antioxidants is increasing. As a natural antioxidant with no toxic side effects, antioxidant peptides are widely used in food, cosmetics, medicine, and other fields because of their strong antioxidant capacity and easy absorption by the human body. Plant-derived antioxidant peptides have attracted more attention than animal-derived antioxidant peptides because plants are more diverse than animals and produce a large number of protein-rich by-products during the processing of their products, which are the main source of antioxidant peptides. In this review, we summarize the source, structure and activity, other biological functions, mechanism of action, and comprehensive applications of plant antioxidant peptides, and look forward to their future development trends, which will provide a reference for further research and development of plant antioxidant peptides.

Abstract
The marine environment is an excellent source for many physiologically active compounds due to its extensive biodiversity. Among these, fish proteins stand out for their unique qualities, making them valuable in a variety of applications due to their diverse compositional and functional properties. Utilizing fish and fish coproducts for the production of protein hydrolysates and bioactive peptides not only enhances their economic value but also reduces their potential environmental harm, if left unutilized. Fish protein hydrolysates (FPHs), known for their excellent nutritional value, favorable amino acid profiles, and beneficial biological activities, have generated significant interest for their potential health benefits. These hydrolysates contain bioactive peptides which are peptide sequences known for their beneficial physiological effects. These biologically active peptides play a role in metabolic regulation/modulation and are increasingly seen as promising ingredients in functional foods, nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals, with potential to improve human health and prevent disease. This review aims to summarize the current in vitro, cell model (in situ) and in vivo research on the antioxidant, glycaemic management and muscle health enhancement properties of FPHs and their peptides.

Abstract
Skin aging is the phenomenon of degenerative changes in the structure and function of skin tissues over time and is manifested by a gradual loss of skin elasticity and firmness, an increased number of wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. Skin anti-aging refers to a reduction in the skin aging phenomenon through medical cosmetic technologies. In recent years, new biomaterials have been continuously developed for improving the appearance of the skin through mechanical tissue filling, regulating collagen synthesis and degradation, inhibiting pigmentation, and repairing the skin barrier. This review summarizes the mechanisms associated with skin aging, describes the biomaterials that are commonly used in medical aesthetics and their possible modes of action, and discusses the application strategies of biomaterials in this area. Moreover, the synergistic effects of such biomaterials and other active ingredients, such as stem cells, exosomes, growth factors, and antioxidants, on tissue regeneration and anti-aging are evaluated. Finally, the possible challenges and development prospects of biomaterials in the field of anti-aging are discussed, and novel ideas for future innovations in this area are summarized.

Abstract
This current study aims to analyze the potential bioactivities possessed by the enzymatic hydrolysates of commercial bovine, porcine, and tilapia gelatins using bioinformatics in combination with in vitro and in vivo studies. The hydrolysate with superior inhibition of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activity was used to treat the D-galactose (DG)-induced amnesic mice. In silico digestion of the gelatins led to the identification of peptide sequences with potential antioxidant, ACE-inhibitory, and anti-amnestic properties. The results of in vitro digestion revealed that the <1 kDa peptide fraction of porcine gelatin hydrolysate obtained after 1 h digestion with papain (PP) (PP1, <1 kDa) potently inhibited ACE, acetylcholinesterase, and prolyl endopeptidase activities at 87.42%, 21.24%, and 48.07%, respectively. Administering the PP1 to DG-induced amnesic mice ameliorated the spatial cognitive impairment and Morris water maze learning abilities. The dentate area morphology in the PP1-treated mice was relatively similar to the control group. In addition, PP1 enhanced the antioxidant capacity in the DG-induced amnesic mice. This study suggests that PP1 could serve as a potential treatment tool against oxidative stress, hypertension, and neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract
Atherosclerosis, a noncommunicable disease caused by cholesterol plaque, can cause chronic diseases. The antiplatelet medicines used in its treatment can cause complications. Marine collagen peptides can be used as a natural atherosclerosis remedy. The present study investigated the preparation and characterization of hydrolyzed collagen (HC) from jellyfish and its conjugation with black jelly mushroom extract (BJME). Their cytotoxicity and ability to prevent cholesterol-induced endothelial cell injury were also examined. HC was prepared using Alcalase or papain hydrolysis (0.2-0.4 units/g of dry matter (DM)). Higher yield, degree of hydrolysis, and antioxidant activities (AAs) were found in the HC obtained from Alcalase, especially at 0.4 units/g DM (A-0.4), compared to other processes (p < 0.05). Thus, A-0.4 was further conjugated with BJME (1-4%, w/w of HC). The HC-2%BJME conjugate showed the highest surface hydrophobicity and AAs compared to other samples. The FTIR spectra and size distribution also confirmed the conjugation between HC and BJME. When EA.hy926 endothelial cells were treated with HC or HC-2%BJME (25-1000 µg/mL), HC-2%BJME had no cytotoxicity, whereas HC at 1000 µg/mL induced cytotoxicity (p < 0.05). Both samples also exhibited protective ability against cholesterol-induced apoptosis and VE-cadherin downregulation of cells. Therefore, HC and conjugate could be natural agents for preventing atherosclerosis.

Abstract
Collagen peptides and marine collagen are enormous resources currently utilized. This review aims to examine the scientific literature to determine which collagen peptides derived from marine sources and which natural active antioxidants from marine collagen have significant biological effects as health-promoting nutraceuticals. Marine collagen is extracted from both vertebrate and invertebrate marine creatures. For vertebrates, this includes fish skin, bones, scales, fins, and cartilage. For invertebrates, it includes mollusks, echinoderms, crustaceans, and poriferans. The method used involved data analysis to organize information for isolating and identifying marine biocompounds with antioxidant properties. Specifically, amino acids with antioxidant properties were identified, enabling the use of hydrolysates and collagen peptides as natural antioxidant nutraceuticals. The methods of extraction of hydrolyzed collagen and collagen peptides by different treatments are systematized. The structural characteristics of collagen, collagen peptides, and amino acids in fish skin and by-products, as well as in invertebrate organisms (jellyfish, mollusks, and crustaceans), are described. The antioxidant properties of different methods of collagen hydrolysates and collagen peptides are systematized, and the results are comparatively analyzed. Their use as natural antioxidant nutraceuticals expands the range of possibilities for the exploitation of natural resources that have not been widely used until now.

Abstract
Rice bran is an important byproduct of the rice polishing process, rich in nutrients, but it is underutilized and often used as feed or discarded, resulting in a huge amount of waste. In this study, rice bran was fermented by Lactobacillus fermentum MF423 to obtain a product with high antioxidant activity. First, a reliable and efficient method for assessing the antioxidant capacity of the fermentation products was established using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), which ensured the consistency of the batch fermentation. The fermented rice bran product (FLRB) exhibited significant antioxidant activity in cells, C. elegans, and hyperlipidemic mice. Transcriptome analysis of mouse livers showed that the expression of plin5 was upregulated in diabetic mice administered FLRB, thereby preventing the excessive production of free fatty acids (FFAs) and the subsequent generation of large amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS). These studies lay the foundation for the application of rice bran fermentation products.

Abstract
Collagenolytic proteases produced by Aspergillus heteromorphus URM0269 were extracted using a PEG/sulfate aqueous two-phase system (ATPS). A 23 factorial design was performed to analyze the independent variables: PEG molar mass (MPEG), PEG concentration (CPEG), and sulfate concentration (Csulf). The extracted proteases were also evaluated for their optimum pH and stability at different pH levels (4.0 - 11.0) after 20 h of incubation. Collagen was extracted from mutton snapper (Lutjanus analis) skin using acetic acid (0.5 mol L-1). The enzyme was preferentially partitioned to the PEG-rich phase (K > 1), whose highest purification factor and recovery (PF = 6.256 and Y = 404.432%) were obtained under specific conditions: MPEG 8000 g.mol-1, CPEG 30%, Csulf 10%. The ATPS extraction provided an enzymatic activity range of pH 7.0 - 11.0, exhibiting greater stability compared to the crude extract. Approximately 80% of protease activity was maintained after 20 hours of incubation at all analyzed pH levels, except pH 11.0. Collagen extraction from L. analis skin yielded 8.056%, and both crude extract samples and ATPS-derived samples successfully hydrolyzed the extracted collagen, reaching peak hydrolysis after 36 hours of treatment. These findings demonstrate the feasibility of extracting highly purified and active proteases capable of hydrolyzing L. analis collagen.

Abstract
Background Traumatic ulcer is a wound on the oral mucosa that often causes pain and impaired eating function. Healing of these wounds takes a long time and can interfere with an individual's daily activities. One therapeutic approach that is being developed is the use of topical application of chum salmon skin-derived collagen extract. Collagen is the main component of the extracellular matrix and plays a major role in wound healing. The skin of chum salmon (Oncorhynchus keta) contains collagen that is effective for the treatment of wounds. Aim The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of topical applications of chum salmon (O. keta) skin-derived collagen extracts in improving the healing of traumatic ulcers through analysis of neutrophil and macrophage numbers and collagen density. Materials and Methods Twenty-four male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups consisting of six rats each. The labial mucosa of the lower lips of the rats was injured with heated amalgam stoppers to create oral traumatic ulcers. Group 1 was a control group; in Groups 2, 3, and 4, 25%, 50%, and 75% of collagen extracts from chum salmon (O. keta) skin were applied topically once a day for 7 days, respectively. The neutrophil and macrophage numbers were observed by hematoxylin and eosin staining. Masson's Trichrome staining was used to analyze the collagen density. Data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and continued with post hoc least significant difference tests. Significance is considered if P < 0.05. Results The oral traumatic ulcers gradually healed until day 7. The number of neutrophils and macrophages was significantly decreased in the treatment groups, and collagen density was increased, compared to the control group (P < 0.05). The decrease of neutrophil and macrophage numbers occurred significantly with the increased collagen extract concentrations (P < 0.05). Collagen density also increased significantly with the increased collagen extract concentrations (P < 0.05). Conclusion Topical applications of chum salmon (O. keta) skin-derived collagen extracts accelerate the healing process of oral traumatic ulcers by decreasing neutrophil and macrophage numbers and increasing collagen density.

Abstract
The fishing industry produces substantial by-products, such as heads, skins, bones, and scales, rich in collagen-a prevalent protein in these materials. However, further application of deep eutectic solvent-based extraction remains unexplored. In this study, we extracted collagen with urea: propanoic acid mixture (U:PA; 1:2) with a 2.2 % yield, followed by enzymatic hydrolysis with alcalase for 120 min. The resulting bioactive peptides demonstrated notable antioxidant activity (961 µmol TE) and antihypertensive properties (39.3 % ACE inhibition). Subsequently, we encapsulated 39.3 % of these hydrolysates in chitosan-TPP capsules, which released about 58 % of their content, primarily in the intestine, as mimicked in the in vitro model of the gastrointestinal tract. Although the digestion process did not significantly alter the size of the non-encapsulated collagen peptides, it did influence their health benefits. The promising results suggest that further research could optimize the use of collagen from fish by-products, potentially offering a sustainable source for health products.

Abstract
Marine organisms such as fish and shellfish are composed of compounds with properties and characteristics that have been proven useful in a variety of sectors such as cosmetics, healthcare (wound healing), food industries, and tissue engineering. Collagen extraction from fish waste as a "blue resource" has attracted research attention over the past decade. Around 75 % of fish waste contains a high concentration of collagen. This has driven research in the conversion of these low-cost by-products into valuable products. Collagen extracted by acidic or/and enzymatic methods is gaining a lot of attention today due to its low cost and high yield. Fermentation and enzymatic hydrolysis stand out as one of the most environmentally sustainable and ecologically friendly methods for collagen extraction. Because of its great biocompatibility, excellent bioactivity, and low antigenicity, marine collagen is receiving more attention. Furthermore, collagen-derived peptides may exhibit interesting antioxidant activity, potent antihypertensive activity, and antimicrobial activity against different strains of bacteria. This review focuses on the advancements in extraction and detection methods of marine collagen, both from a technological and legislative standpoint, in addition to exploring its diverse range of application domains.

Abstract
Leather finishing is a critical process in the leather industry, as it significantly influences the final appearance, durability, and quality of leather products. Traditional leather finishing techniques often involve the use of synthetic chemicals, which may lead to environmental concerns and potential health hazards. In this study, we investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of a new collagen-based product for leather finishing. Collagen, a natural protein found abundantly in animals, has shown promise as an environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative for leather finishing. The new collagen gel product obtained from bovine hide waste by using an alkaline extraction method with lime was functionalized through an enzymatic treatment that allows to achieve a finishing product suitable for coating formulations, and at the same time, a biodegradable finishing. The collagen gel product was optimized by varying parameters, such as temperature, pH, and enzyme quantity. The optimized collagen gel product exhibits a wide particle size range and retains the triple-helical structure of collagen. The leather samples treated with the collagen gel product show enhanced properties compared to those with conventional finishes. The results show that the collagen gel product enhances water vapor permeability, color stability, and touch in the finishes. However, a low resistance to wet rubbing is obtained; therefore, it is necessary to study how to improve this parameter.

Abstract
Cronobacter sakazakii is a major foodborne pathogen that is mainly transmitted through powdered infant formula (PIF) and has a high mortality rate of up to 80%, particularly in fetuses and neonates. Bacteriophages have emerged as an effective biocontrol agent for antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In this study, lytic phage SG01 was newly characterized and loaded into collagen peptide/trehalose-based powders to develop an antibacterial agent against C. sakazakii contamination in PIF. The phage belongs to the Siphoviridae family, has an icosahedral head and a flexible tail, and showed rapid and persistent antibacterial activity up to 17 h. It was specifically active against C. sakazakii and also exhibited effective anti-biofilm properties. The phage was freeze-dried to a collagen peptide/trehalose-based powder and the phage was tested for viability, storage stability, and antibacterial activity. The optimal composition was 5% (w/v) collagen peptides and 1% (w/v) trehalose, which demonstrated the highest phage viability after freeze-drying. The phage remained stable in the collagen peptide/trehalose-based powder for up to four weeks at 4 °C and 25 °C, indicating that this is a desirable formulation for phage protection. Furthermore, the phage powder showed significant antibacterial efficacy in PIF, with a 4-log CFU/mL reduction within 6 h. Overall, the tested phage powder has the potential to be used as an antimicrobial agent in the food industry, particularly in powdered foods such as PIF.

Abstract
Antler ossified tissue has been widely used for the extraction of bioactive peptides. In this study, collagen was prepared from antler ossified tissue via acetic acid and pepsin. Five different proteases were used to hydrolyze the collagen and the hydrolysate treated by neutrase (collagen peptide named ACP) showed the highest DPPH radical clearance rate. The extraction process of ACP was optimized by response surface methodology, and the optimal conditions were as follows: a temperature of 52 °C, a pH of 6.1, and an enzyme concentration of 3200 U/g, which resulted in the maximum DPPH clearance rate of 74.41 ± 0.48%. The peptides (ACP-3) with the strongest antioxidant activity were obtained after isolation and purification, and its DPPH free radical clearance rate was 90.58 ± 1.27%; at the same time, it exhibited good scavenging activity for ABTS, hydroxyl radical, and superoxide anion radical. The study investigated the protective effect of ACP-3 on oxidative damage in HaCaT cells. The findings revealed that all groups that received ACP-3 pretreatment exhibited increased activities of SOD, GSH-Px, and CAT compared to the model group. Furthermore, ACP-3 pretreatment reduced the levels of ROS and MDA in HaCaT cells subjected to H2O2-induced oxidative damage. These results suggest that collagen peptides derived from deer antler ossified tissue can effectively mitigate the oxidative damage caused by H2O2 in HaCaT cells, thereby providing a foundation for the utilization of collagen peptides in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to isolate and characterize collagen and angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE)-inhibitory (ACEi) peptides from the swim bladders of monkfish (Lophius litulon). Therefore, acid-soluble collagen (ASC-M) and pepsin-soluble collagen (PSC-M) with yields of 4.27 ± 0.22% and 9.54 ± 0.51%, respectively, were extracted from monkfish swim bladders using acid and enzyme methods. The ASC-M and PSC-M contained Gly (325.2 and 314.9 residues/1000 residues, respectively) as the major amino acid, but they had low imino acid content (192.5 and 188.6 residues/1000 residues, respectively) in comparison with collagen from calf skins (CSC) (216.6 residues/1000 residues). The sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) patterns and ultraviolet (UV) absorption spectrums of ASC-M and PSC-M illustrated that they were mainly composed of type I collagen. Subsequently, three ACEi peptides were isolated from a PSC-M hydrolysate prepared via a double-enzyme system (alcalase + neutrase) and identified as SEGPK (MHP6), FDGPY (MHP7) and SPGPW (MHP9), with molecular weights of 516.5, 597.6 and 542.6 Da, respectively. SEGPK, FDGPY and SPGPW displayed remarkable anti-ACE activity, with IC50 values of 0.63, 0.94 and 0.71 mg/mL, respectively. Additionally, a molecular docking assay demonstrated that the affinities of SEGPK, FDGPY and SPGPW with ACE were -7.3, -10.9 and -9.4 kcal/mol, respectively. The remarkable ACEi activity of SEGPK, FDGPY and SPGPW was due to their connection with the active pockets and/or sites of ACE via hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic interaction and electrostatic force. Moreover, SEGPK, FDGPY and SPGPW could protect HUVECs by controlling levels of nitric oxide (NO) and endothelin-1 (ET-1). Therefore, this work provides an effective means for the preparation of collagens and novel ACEi peptides from monkfish swim bladders, and the prepared ACEi peptides, including SEGPK, FDGPY and SPGPW, could serve as natural functional components in the development of health care products to control hypertension.

Abstract
In this study, we utilized the remarkable capabilities of Bacillus subtilis ls-45 during the fermentation process to generate pine nut peptide. Through gene sequencing, we confirmed the proficiency of Bacillus subtilis ls-45 in producing protease, thereby serving as a valuable enzymatic source for protein hydrolysis. Our investigation focused on examining the variations in amino acid types and quantities between enzymatic pine nut protein peptide (EPP) and fermented pine nut protein polypeptide (FPP). Furthermore, we conducted a comprehensive assessment of the in vitro antioxidant activities of EPP and FPP, encompassing measurements of their Hydroxyl radical scavenging rate, Total reducing capacity, Superoxide anion scavenging rate, and ABTS+ radical scavenging rate. Notably, FPP exhibited superior antioxidant capacity compared to EPP. By employing semi-inhibitory mass concentration (IC50) analysis, we determined that FPP displayed enhanced efficacy in neutralizing hazardous free radicals when compared to EPP.

Abstract
Type II collagen is a homologous super-helical structure consisting of three identical α1(II) chains. It is a major component of animal cartilage, and is widely used in the food industry. Type II collagen can be extracted by acids, salts, enzymes, and via auxiliary methods and can be further hydrolyzed chemically and enzymatically to produce collagen peptides. Recent studies have shown that type II collagen and its polypeptides have good self-assembly properties and important biological activities, such as maintaining cartilage tissue integrity, inducing immune tolerance, stimulating chondrocyte growth and redifferentiation, and providing antioxidant benefits. This review focuses specifically on type II collagen and describes its structure, extraction, and purification, as well as the preparation of type II collagen peptides. In particular, the self-assembly properties and functional activities of type II collagen and collagen peptides are reviewed. In addition, recent research advances in the application of type II collagen and collagen peptides in functional foods, food additives, food coating materials, edible films, and carriers for the food industry are presented. This paper provides more detailed and comprehensive information on type II collagen and peptide for their application.

Abstract
Society and consumers are increasingly concerned about food safety and the sustainability of food production systems. A significant amount of by-products and discards are generated during the processing of aquatic animals, which still needs to be fully utilized by the food industry. The management and sustainable use of these resources are essential to avoiding environmental pollution and resource waste. These by-products are rich in biologically active proteins, which can be converted into peptides by enzymatic hydrolysis or fermentation treatment. Therefore, exploring the extraction of collagen peptides from these by-products using an enzymatic hydrolysis technology has attracted a wide range of attention from numerous researchers. Collagen peptides have been found to possess multiple biological activities, including antioxidant, anticancer, antitumor, hypotensive, hypoglycemic, and anti-inflammatory properties. These properties can enhance the physiological functions of organisms and make collagen peptides useful as ingredients in food, pharmaceuticals, or cosmetics. This paper reviews the general methods for extracting collagen peptides from various processing by-products of aquatic animals, including fish skin, scales, bones, and offal. It also summarizes the functional activities of collagen peptides as well as their applications.

Abstract
Antioxidant peptides obtained through enzymatic hydrolysis of food proteins exhibit a broad range of bioactivities both in vitro and in vivo models. The antioxidant peptides showed the potential to fight against the reactive oxygen species, free radicals and other pro-oxidative substances which are considered the source of various chronic diseases for humans. Both animals and plants have been recognized as natural protein sources and attracted much research interest over the synthetic ones in terms of safety. However, the main challenge remains to increase the antioxidant peptides yield, reduce the enzyme quantity and the reaction time. Consequently, different efficient and innovative food processing technologies such as thermal, ultrasound, microwave, high hydrostatic pressure, pulsed electric field, etc. have been developed and currently used to treat food proteins before (pretreatment) or during the enzymatic hydrolysis (assisted). Those technologies were found to significantly enhance the degree of hydrolysis and the production of substantial antioxidant peptides. These emerging technologies enhance the enzymatic hydrolysis by inducing protein denaturation/unfolding, and the enzymatic activation without altering their functional and nutritional properties. This review discusses the state of the art of thermal, ultrasound, high hydrostatic pressure, microwave, and pulsed electric field techniques, their applications while coupled with enzymatic hydrolysis, their comparison and potential challenges for the production of antioxidant peptides from food proteins.

Abstract
Mesonia algae K4-1 from the Arctic secretes a novel cold-adapted and salt-tolerant protease EK4-1. It has the highest sequence similarity with Stearolysin, an M4 family protease from Geobacillus stearothermophilus, with only 45% sequence identity, and is a novel M4 family protease. Ek4-1 has a low optimal catalytic temperature (40 °C) and is stable at low temperatures. Moreover, EK4-1 is still active in 4 mol/L NaCl solution and is tolerant to surfactants, oxidizing agents and organic solvents; furthermore, it prefers the hydrolysis of peptide bonds at the P1' position as the hydrophobic residues, such as Leu, Phe and Val, and amino acids with a long side chain, such as Phe and Tyr. Mn2+and Mg2+ significantly promoted enzyme activity, while Fe3+, Co+, Zn2+ and Cu2+ significantly inhibited enzyme activity. Amino acid composition analysis showed that EK4-1 had more small-side-chain amino acids and fewer large-side-chain amino acids. Compared with a thermophilic protease Stearolysin, the cold-adapted protease EK4-1 contains more random coils (48.07%) and a larger active pocket (727.42 Å3). In addition, the acidic amino acid content of protease EK4-1 was higher than that of the basic amino acid, which might be related to the salt tolerance of protease. Compared with the homologous proteases EB62 and E423, the cold-adapted protease EK4-1 was more efficient in the proteolysis of grass carp skin, salmon skin and casein at a low temperature, and produced a large number of antioxidant peptides, with DPPH, ·OH and ROO· scavenging activities. Therefore, cold-adapted and salt-tolerant protease EK4-1 offers wide application prospects in the cosmetic and detergent industries.

Abstract
To understand the production and characteristics of protein hydrolysates pertaining to individual fish species, we selected and analyzed the most important commercial fish species according to the market value based on the Statistics on International Exports of Fishery Commodities by Food and Agriculture Organization. Accordingly, salmon, shrimp, cod, tuna, squid, and herring are marine species with high global value. Peptides obtained from their by-products were predominant in hydrophobic amino acids such as alanine, phenylalanine, methionine, proline, valine, tyrosine, tryptophan, leucine, and isoleucine. Bioactive peptides are short with a length of 2-20 amino acids. They remain inactive when they are within their parent proteins. Low molecular weight (0.3-8 kDa) peptides from hydrolyzed protein are easily digestible, readily absorbed by the body and are water-soluble. The hydrophobic nature contributes to their bioactivity, which facilitates their interactions with the membrane lipid bilayers. Incomplete hydrolysis results in low yields of hydrophobic amino acids. The glycosylation type of the resulting peptide fragment determines the different applications of the hydrolysate. The degree of conservation of the glycosidic residues and the size of the peptides are influenced by the method used to generate these hydrolysates. Therefore, it is crucial to explore inexpensive novel methodologies to generate bioactive peptides. According to the current studies, a unified approach (in silico estimation coupled with peptidomics) can be used for the identification of novel peptides with diverse physiological and technological functions. From an industrial perspective, the reusability of immobilized enzymes and membrane separation techniques (e.g., ultrafiltration) on marine by-products can offer low operating costs and higher yield for large-scale production of bioactive peptides. This review summarizes the production processes and essential characteristics of protein hydrolysates from fish by-products and presents the advances in their application.

Abstract
Crude enzymes produced by a marine bacterium Pseudoalteromonas sp. JS4-1 were used to hydrolyze phycobiliprotein. Enzymatic productions showed good performance on DPPH radical and hydroxyl radical scavenging activities (45.14 ± 0.43% and 65.11 ± 2.64%, respectively), especially small peptides with MWCO <3 kDa. Small peptides were fractioned to four fractions using size-exclusion chromatography and the second fraction (F2) had the highest activity in hydroxyl radical scavenging ability (62.61 ± 5.80%). The fraction F1 and F2 both exhibited good antioxidant activities in oxidative stress models in HUVECs and HaCaT cells. Among them, F2 could upregulate the activities of SOD and GSH-Px and reduce the lipid peroxidation degree to scavenge the ROS to protect Caenorhabditis elegans under adversity. Then, 25 peptides total were identified from F2 by LC-MS/MS, and the peptide with the new sequence of INSSDVQGKY as the most significant component was synthetized and the ORAC assay and cellular ROS scavenging assay both illustrated its excellent antioxidant property.

Abstract
In recent years, several studies have reported the beneficial effects of antioxidant peptides in delaying oxidation reactions. Thus, a growing number of food proteins have been investigated as suitable sources for obtaining these antioxidant peptides. In this study, some of the most critical developments in the discovery of peptidic antioxidants are discussed. Initially, the primary methods to release, purify, and identify these antioxidant peptides from various food-derived sources are reviewed. Then, computer-based screening methods of the available peptides are summarized, and methods to interpret their structure-activity relationship are illustrated. Finally, approaches to the large-scale production of these bioactive peptides are described. In addition, the applications of these antioxidants in food systems are discussed, and gaps, future challenges, and opportunities in this field are highlighted. In conclusion, various food items can be considered promising sources to obtain these novel antioxidant peptides, which present various opportunities for food applications in addition to health promotion. The lack of in-depth data on the link between the structure and activity of these antioxidants, which is critical for the prediction of possible bioactive amino acid sequences and their potency in food systems and in vivo conditions (rather than in vitro systems), requires further attention. Consequently, future collaborative research activities between the industry and academia are required to realize the commercialization objectives of these novel antioxidant peptides.

Abstract
The market demand for marine-based cosmetics has shown a tremendous growth rate in the last decade. Marine resources represent a promising source of novel bioactive compounds for new cosmetic ingredient development. However, concern about sustainability also becomes an issue that should be considered in developing cosmetic ingredients. The fisheries industry (e.g., fishing, farming, and processing) generates large amounts of leftovers containing valuable substances, which are potent sources of cosmeceutical ingredients. Several bioactive substances could be extracted from the marine by-product that can be utilized as a potent ingredient to develop cosmetics products. Those bioactive substances (e.g., collagen from fish waste and chitin from crustacean waste) could be utilized as anti-photoaging, anti-wrinkle, skin barrier, and hair care products. From this perspective, this review aims to approach the potential active ingredients derived from marine by-products for cosmetics and discuss the possible activity of those active ingredients in promoting human beauty. In addition, this review also covers the prospect and challenge of using marine by-products toward the emerging concept of sustainable blue cosmetics.

Abstract
The present study was conducted to examine the bioactive and wound healing properties of collagen hydrolysate derived from Piaractus brachypomus (pacu) fish skin waste. Collagen type I (P coll.) yielding 72.25% was isolated from skin waste by following acid-soluble collagen extraction method. Further, collagen was fragmented using bacterial collagenase and the processed collagen hydrolysate (peptides) was in the range of 10–15 kDa that was further purified using ion-exchange chromatography. The FTIR spectra of both P coll. and collagen hydrolysate (PSCH) were nearly similar showing that PSCH retained the structural and chemical composition similar to its parent molecule (P coll.). Solubility analysis revealed that PSCH has slightly better solubility compared to P coll. Similarly, scanning electron micrographs also exhibited more uniform and porous microstructure of PSCH compared to P coll. Further, PSCH was found to be efficient in peroxide quenching (64.5%) and radical scavenging activities (85.74%). MTT studies confirmed PSCH to be non-toxic displaying 84.68% cell viability at the highest concentration (3 mg/ml) and hemocompatibility test revealed PSCH to be non-hemolytic with minimal lysis of only 2.1% of human RBCs. In addition, PSCH also displayed a remarkable wound closure ability of more than 80% at 12 h and 100% within 24 h. Hence, these findings suggest that recycled PSCH has potent wound healing ability and can be produced economically on a large scale for possible biological applications in regenerative medicine.

Abstract
Enzymatic hydrolysis is the most prominent strategy to release bioactive peptides from different food proteins and protein-rich by-products. Unconventional microbial proteases (UMPs) have gaining increased attention for such purposes, particularly from the 2010s. In this review, we present and discuss aspects related to UMPs production, and their use to obtain bioactive protein hydrolysates. Antioxidant and anti-hypertensive potentials, commonly evaluated through in vitro testing, are mainly reported. The in vivo bioactivities of protein hydrolysates and peptides produced through UMPs action are highlighted. In addition to bioactivities, enzymatic hydrolysis acts by modulating the functional properties of proteins for potential food uses. The compiled literature indicates that UMPs are promising biocatalysts to generate bioactive protein hydrolysates, adding up to commercially available enzymes. From the recent interest on this topic, continuous and in-depth research is needed to advance toward the applicability and commercial utility of both UMPs and obtained hydrolysates.

Abstract
This study aims to find antioxidant peptides from octopus protein hydrolyzates and verify the protective effects against H2O2-induced oxidative stress in IEC-6 cells. After the alcalase hydrolysate was ultrafiltrated, purified by Sephadex G-25 gel fractionation and semipreparative reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC), 16 peptides were identified, and chemically synthesized. In particular, the peptides AQNY, AMMLAW, FEGAW, GGAW, VDTVVCVW, and VVCLW showed better oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) and ABTS radical scavenging capacity. Among them, the smallest-molecular-weight peptide GGAW exhibited the best antioxidant activity. Furthermore, GGAW protected IEC-6 cells from H2O2-induced oxidative damage by significantly reducing the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), malondialdehyde (MDA), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and increasing the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX), thereby improving cell viability. These results indicated that the peptide GGAW possessed the antioxidant capacity to prevent oxidative stress damage.

Abstract
Cardiac arterial bulbs of Skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) are rich in elastin, and its hydrolysates are high quality raw materials for daily cosmetics. In order to effectively utilizing Skipjack tuna processing byproducts-cardiac arterial bulbs and to prepare peptides with high antioxidant activity, pepsin was selected from six proteases for hydrolyzing proteins, and the best hydrolysis conditions of pepsin were optimized. Using ultrafiltration and chromatographic methods, eleven antioxidant peptides were purified from protein hydrolysate of tuna cardiac arterial bulbs. Four tripeptides (QGD, PKK, GPQ and GLN) were identified as well as seven pentapeptides (GEQSN, GEEGD, YEGGD, GEGER, GEGQR, GPGLM and GDRGD). Three out of them, namely the tripeptide PKK and the pentapeptides YEGGD and GPGLM exhibited the highest radical scavenging activities on 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), hydroxyl, 2,2'-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) and superoxide anion assays. They also showed to protect plasmid DNA and HepG2 cells against H2O2-induced oxidative stress. Furthermore, they exhibited high stability under temperature ranged from 20-100 °C, pH values ranged from 3-11, and they simulated gastrointestinal digestion for 240 min. These results suggest that the prepared eleven antioxidant peptides from cardiac arterial bulbs, especially the three peptides PKK, YEGGD, and GPGLM, could serve as promising candidates in health-promoting products due to their high antioxidant activity and their stability.

Abstract
Background and aims A combined eel and soy-based tempe (CEST) flour is rich in nutrients, especially its high amino acid content in which bioactive peptides (BPs) are expected to be found. Hence, this research aimed to identify the BPs of CEST flour and CEST supplementation’s effect on improving nutritional status biomarkers by ameliorating serum protein, hemoglobin, and IGF-1 of malnourished rats. Methods CEST flour with a ratio of eel and soy-based tempe of 1:3.5 was produced by applying the oven drying method. Amino acid sequences from six BPs were analyzed using a protein sequencer and spectrometer-electrospray ionization (MS-ESI). A total of thirty malnourished male Rattus norvegicus aged 3–4 weeks were given low-protein (LP; 4% w/w protein) diet treatment for 4 weeks. Afterward, rats were divided into 3 groups of 10 rats. Group A and B remained on a low-protein diet for 4 weeks, receiving an LP diet and getting doses of CEST of 100 and 200 mg/kg BW, respectively, via oral. Group C or control was given a Normal-protein (NP) diet (23% w/w of protein) and was allowed to feed ad libitum during the trial period without a dose of CEST. Results Six bioactive peptides were found, with WMGPY being the most abundant, along with a DPPH radical scavenging activity of 5.0 mg/mL. The results showed that serum protein, hemoglobin, and IGF-1 of group B were significantly higher compared to groups A and C (p = 0.0021). CEST dose of 200 mg/kg BW was more effective to increase serum levels of protein (p = 0.0052), hemoglobin, and IGF-1 (p < 0.0001) compared to a 100 mg/kg BW dose. Conclusion This indicates that the CEST flour has six bioactive peptides, which may contribute to the improvement of nutritional status biomarkers. To establish its potential impact, a human clinical study is urgently needed.

Abstract
Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a chronic and potentially fatal ailment caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and remains a major health problem worldwide. In recent years, the research focus has shifted to a greater emphasis on complementing treatment regimens involving conventional antiretroviral (ARV) drug therapies with novel lead structures isolated from various marine organisms that have the potential to be utilized as therapeutics for the management of HIV-AIDS. The present review summarizes the recent developments regarding bioactive peptides sourced from various marine organisms. This includes a discussion encompassing the potential of these novel marine bioactive peptides with regard to antiretroviral activities against HIV, preparation, purification, and processing techniques, in addition to insight into the future trends with an emphasis on the potential of exploration and evaluation of novel peptides to be developed into effective antiretroviral drugs.

Abstract
This work aimed to produce collagens and hydrolysates with antimicrobial and antioxidant activity from sheep slaughter by-products. The by-products (sheep and lamb) were treated and extracted. The collagens were hydrolyzed with the enzyme Alcalase®. The spectra of collagens and hydrolysates were similar (amide bands I, II, III, A, B). The bands presented by the collagens (α1, α2, β) were characteristic of type I collagen. The hydrolysates showed molecular weight peptides equal to/lower than 15 kDa. Collagens had a denaturation temperature of 39.32 (lamb) and 36.38 °C (sheep), whereas the hydrolysates did not undergo thermal transition. Hydrolysates showed lower values of antioxidant activity (AA) than the collagens. The collagens from lamb and from sheep displayed an AA of 13.4% (concentration of 0.0002%) and 13.1% (concentration of 0.0005%), respectively. At the concentration of 0.0020%, the lamb hydrolysates displayed an AA of 10.2%, whereas the sheep hydrolysates had an AA of only 1.98%. Collagen also showed higher antimicrobial activity compared to hydrolysates, requiring a lower concentration to inhibit the microorganisms tested. Sheep slaughter by-products proved to be a viable source for obtaining protein hydrolysates and collagens with antimicrobial and antioxidant activity, which can be applied in the development of nutraceuticals beneficial to human health.

Abstract
Chlorella pyrenoidosa is an excellent source of protein, and in this research, we assessed the antioxidant and emulsifying effects of Chlorella protein hydrolysate (CPH) using neutral proteases and alkaline proteases, as well as the properties of CPH-derived krill oil-in-water (O/W) emulsions. The CPHs exhibited the ability to scavenge several kinds of free radicals, including 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), O2-, hydroxyl, and ABTS. Additionally, the CPHs (5 mg/mL) scavenged approximately 100% of the DPPH and ABTS. The CPHs showed similar emulsifying activities to Tween 20 and excellent foaming activities (max FS 74%), which helped to stabilize the krill oil-in-water emulsion. Less than 10 mg/mL CPHs was able to form fresh krill oil-in-water emulsions; moreover, the CPHs (5 mg/mL) in a krill O/W emulsion were homogenous, opaque, and stable for at least 30 days. Based on their inhibitory effects on the peroxide value (POV) and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TRABS), the CPHs were found to be able to inhibit lipid oxidation in both emulsifying systems and krill O/W emulsions. Thus, the CPHs could improve superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities by 5- or 10-fold and decrease the high reactive oxygen species (ROS) level caused by the addition of H2O2 in vitro. In conclusion, health-promoting CPHs could be applied in krill oil-in-water emulsions as both emulsifiers and antioxidants, which could help to improve the oxidative and physical stability of emulsions.

Abstract
Salmon byproducts (Salmo salar) generated by the food chain represent a source of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA): 20:5n-3; docosahexaenoic acid (DHA): 22:6n-3) and peptides that can be used as supplements in food for nutraceutical or health applications, such as in the prevention of certain pathologies (e.g., Alzheimer’s and cardiovascular diseases). The extraction of polar lipids naturally rich in PUFAs by enzymatic processes without organic solvent (controlled by pH-Stat method), coupled with the production of 1 kDa salmon peptides by membrane filtration, allowed the formulation of nanocarriers. The physicochemical properties of the nanoliposomes (size ranging from 120 to 140 nm, PDI of 0.27, zeta potential between −32 and −46 mV and encapsulation efficiency) were measured, and the bioactivity of salmon hydrolysate peptides was assessed (antioxidant and antiradical activity: ABTS, ORAC, DPPH; iron metal chelation). Salmon peptides exhibited good angiotensin-conversion-enzyme (ACE) inhibition activity, with an IC50 value of 413.43 ± 13.12 µg/mL. Cytotoxicity, metabolic activity and proliferation experiments demonstrated the harmlessness of the nanostructures in these experimental conditions.
