Abstract
This study explores the coordination dynamics between dietary polyphenols, specifically kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin, and Cu ions in aqueous environments. A novel synthesis method for flavonol-Cu(II) coordination compounds is introduced, effectively reducing interference from free metal ions. Our results reveal consistent binding patterns of Cu ions with flavonols (2:1 ratio of flavonol to Cu(II)), predominantly at the 4,5 sites. Various analytical techniques are used to validate these coordination ratios and sites. The binding affinity of the flavonols for Cu ions follows a descending sequence: myricetin > quercetin > kaempferol. Notably, coordination with Cu ions enhances the free-radical scavenging activities of these flavonols. These findings hold substantial importance for food chemistry, biology, and medicine, providing crucial insights into the way dietary flavonols form stable structures in environments similar to human body fluids and their interactions with metal ions, opening new possibilities for their application and understanding in diverse scientific domains.

Abstract
The present study comprehensively used integrated multi-spectral omics combined with sensory evaluation analysis to investigate the quality of three types of Yunnan Congou black teas from different tree ages (decades, DB; hundreds, HB; a thousand years, TB). TB infusion presented the highest scores of sweetness and umami, higher brightness, and yellow hue. Eighty-four marker metabolites were identified, including Amadori rearrangement products, catechin oxidation products, flavonoid glycosides, and organic acids, which are simultaneously related to tea infusions' color and taste. Moreover, the content of some characteristic flavonoid glycosides and organic acids was determined. Our finding implied trans-4-O-p-coumaroylquinic acid and quercetin 3-O-rutinoside contributed to bitterness and astringency, while dehydro theanine-glucose Amadori product and xylopyranosyl-glucopyranose resulted in umami and sweetness. These results provided quantitative and qualitative information for deciphering differences among black teas with different tea plant ages, conducing to the further utilization of ancient tea plants in Southwest China.

Abstract
The health-improving functions of bioactive flavonoids in vitro and in vivo are often limited by their low stability, which could be counteracted by the application of proteins as carriers of flavonoids. Clarification of the mechanism of protein-ligand interaction is crucial for the encapsulation of bioactive components. Herein, common plasma proteins [i.e., bovine serum albumin (BSA), human serum albumin (HSA), human immunoglobulin G (IgG) and fibrinogen (FG)] were compared for their binding characteristics to quercetin, the main component of flavonoids in human diet, in the absence and presence of free Cu2+ (an accelerator for flavonoids' instability) using multi-spectroscopic and computational methods. As a flexible open structure of proteins, both BSA and HSA were found to be the most promising carriers for quercetin and Cu2+ with an affinity on the order of 104 M-1. HSA-diligand complex (i.e., HSA-quercetin-Cu2+) was successfully generated when both quercetin and Cu2+ were added to the HSA solution. The stability and free radical scavenging activity of bioactive quercetin during incubation was promoted in the HSA-diligand complex relative to quercetin-Cu2+ complex. Quercetin/Cu2+ system could induce the formation of reactive oxygen species such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydroxide radical (·OH), which were significantly suppressed upon HSA binding. Consistently, the cytotoxicity of the quercetin/Cu2+ system to endothelial cells was reduced in the HSA-diligand complex. These results demonstrate the possibility of developing serum albumin-based carriers for the protection of bioactive flavonoids in their nutritional application.

Abstract
The control of food browning can be achieved by inhibiting tyrosinase (TY) activity, but current studies on the interaction of flavonoids as potent inhibitors with TY are inadequate. Herein, the effect of a library of flavonoids on TY was investigated using enzyme kinetics, multispectroscopic methods, and molecular modelling. Some flavonoids including 4, 8, 10, 17, 18, 28, 30, 33, and 34 exhibited potent TY inhibitory activity, with compound 10 demonstrating reversible inhibition in a mixed-competitive manner. Ultraviolet-visible spectral changes confirmed the formation of flavonoid-TY complexes. Fluorescence quenching analysis suggested effective intrinsic fluorescence quenching by flavonoids through static quenching with the ground-state complex formation. Synchronous fluorescence spectra showed the microenvironment change around the fluorophores induced by flavonoids. ANS-binding fluorescence assay indicated TY's surface hydrophobicity change by flavonoids and highlighted the change in secondary structure conformation, which was further confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectra. Molecular modelling results helped visualize the preferred binding conformation at the active site of TY, and demonstrated the important role of hydrophobic interaction and hydrogen bonding in stabilizing the flavonoid-TY complexes. These findings prove that diverse flavonoid structures distinctly impact their binding behavior on TY and contribute to understanding flavonoids' potential as TY inhibitors in controlling food browning.

Abstract
Oxidative stress results from an imbalance between reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and the body's ability to neutralize them. ROS are reactive molecules generated during cellular metabolism and play a crucial role in normal physiological processes. However, excessive ROS production can lead to oxidative damage, contributing to various diseases and aging. This study is focused on rosmarinic acid (RA), a hydroxycinnamic acid (HCA) derivative well known for its antioxidant activity. In addition, RA has also demonstrated prooxidant behavior under specific conditions involving high concentrations of transition metal ions such as iron and copper, high pH, and the presence of oxygen. In this study, we aim to clarify the underlying mechanisms and factors governing the antioxidant and prooxidant activities of RA, and to compare them with other HCA derivatives. UV-Vis, NMR, and EPR techniques were used to explore copper(II)'s binding ability of RA, caffeic acid, and p-coumaric acid. At the same time, UV-Vis and NMR methods were exploited to evaluate the polyphenols' free radical scavenging abilities towards ROS generated by the ascorbic acid-copper(II) system. All the data indicate that RA is the most effective polyphenol both in copper binding abilities and ROS protection.

Abstract
The antioxidant properties of flavonoids are mediated by their functional hydroxyl groups, which are capable of both chelating redox active metals such as iron, copper and scavenging free radicals. In this paper, the antioxidant vs. prooxidant and DNA protecting properties of baicalein and Cu(II)-baicalein complexes were studied under the conditions of the Copper-Fenton reaction and of the Copper-Ascorbate system. From the relevant EPR spectra, the interaction of baicalein with Cu(II) ions was confirmed, while UV-vis spectroscopy demonstrated a greater stability over time of Cu(II)-baicalein complexes in DMSO than in methanol and PBS and Phosphate buffers. An ABTS study confirmed a moderate ROS scavenging efficiency, at around 37%, for both free baicalein and Cu(II)-baicalein complexes (in the ratios 1:1 and 1:2). The results from absorption titrations are in agreement with those from viscometric studies and confirmed that the binding mode between DNA and both free baicalein and Cu-baicalein complexes, involves hydrogen bonds and van der Waals interactions. The DNA protective effect of baicalein has been investigated by means of gel electrophoresis under the conditions of the Cu-catalyzed Fenton reaction and of the Cu-Ascorbate system. In both cases, it was found that, at sufficiently high concentrations, baicalein offers some protection to cells from DNA damage caused by ROS (singlet oxygen, hydroxyl radicals and superoxide radical anions). Accordingly, baicalein may be useful as a therapeutic agent in diseases with a disturbed metabolism of redox metals such as copper, for example Alzheimer's disease, Wilson's disease and various cancers. While therapeutically sufficient concentrations of baicalein may protect neuronal cells from Cu-Fenton-induced DNA damage in regard to neurological conditions, conversely, in the case of cancers, low concentrations of baicalein do not inhibit the pro-oxidant effect of copper ions and ascorbate, which can, in turn, deliver an effective damage to DNA in tumour cells.

Abstract
The development of novel drug delivery systems (DDSs) with promising antibacterial properties is essential for facing the emergency of increasing resistance to antimicrobial agents. The antibacterial features of quercetin and its metal complexes have been broadly investigated. However, several drawbacks affect their activity and effectiveness. In this work, we propose a DDS based on a pH-responsive cobalt(II)-coordinated assembly containing quercetin and polyacrylic acid. This system is suggested to trigger the release of the model drug in a pH-dependent mode by exploiting the localized acidic environment at the bacterial infection sites under anaerobic conditions. The delivery system has been designed by accurately examining the species and the multiple equilibria occurring in solution among the assembly components. The formation of cobalt(II) complexes with quercetin in the absence or presence of the pH-responsive polyacrylic acid was investigated in buffered aqueous solution at pH 7.4 using spectrophotometric (UV-Vis) and calorimetric (ITC) techniques. The determined binding affinities and thermodynamic parameters that resulted are essential for the development of a DDS with improved binding and release capabilities. Furthermore, the affinity of the polymer-cobalt(II) complex toward the model antimicrobial flavonoid was explored at the solid-liquid interface by quartz crystal microbalance (QCM-D) experiments, which provided marked evidence for drug loading and release under pH control.

Abstract
In iron-fortified bouillon, reactivity of the iron ion with (acylated) flavone glycosides from herbs can affect product color and bioavailability of iron. This study investigates the influence of 7-O-glycosylation and additional 6″-O-acetylation or 6″-O-malonylation of flavones on their interaction with iron. Nine (6″-O-acylated) flavone 7-O-apiosylglucosides were purified from celery (Apium graveolens), and their structures were elucidated by mass spectrometry (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). In the presence of iron, a bathochromic shift and darker color were observed for the 7-O-apiosylglucosides compared to the aglycon of flavones that only possess the 4-5 site. Thus, the ability of iron to coordinate to the flavone 4-5 site is increased by 7-O-glycosylation. For flavones with an additional 3'-4' site, less discoloration was observed for the 7-O-apiosylglucoside compared to the aglycon. Additional 6″-O-acylation did not affect the color. These findings indicate that model systems used to study discoloration in iron-fortified foods should also comprise (acylated) glycosides of flavonoids.

Despite the phenolic acids' health benefits, their interactions with proteins are still unclear. In this study, the interactions of Bovine Serum Albumin (BSA) with chlorogenic acid (CHA), caffeic acid (CA), and their Al3+, Cu2+ complexes were studied by using circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, and UV/Vis spectroscopy. It was found that esterification of carboxyl group of CA with quinic acid increased the binding affinities for BSA. After chelating with Cu2+ and Al3+, both CHA and CA exhibited high binding affinities for BSA. CHA could form CHA-Cu2 and CHA-Al2 complex with Cu2+ and Al3+. The result of CD spectroscopy demonstrated that the binding of CHA and Al3+ with BSA contributed to the folding of BSA secondary structure. In addition, with the presence of CHA, binding with Al3+ could also induce changes in BSA conformation. The binding sites of both CHA and CA were closed to Trp213.

Abstract
Throughout the last decades flavonoids have been considered as a powerful bioactive molecule. Complexation of these flavonoids with metal ions demonstrated the genesis of unique organometallic complexes which provide improved pharmacological and therapeutic activities. In this research, the fisetin ruthenium-p-cymene complex was synthesized and characterized via different analytical methods like UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscope. The toxicological profile of the complex was evaluated by acute and sub-acute toxicity. Additionally, the mutagenic and genotoxic activity of the complex was assessed by Ames test, chromosomal aberration test, and micronucleus based assay in Swiss albino mice. The acute oral toxicity study exhibited the LD50 of the complex at 500 mg/kg and subsequently, the sub-acute doses were selected. In sub-acute toxicity study, the hematology and serum biochemistry of the 400 mg/kg group showed upregulated white blood cells, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, creatinine, glucose and cholesterol. However, there was no treatment related alteration of hematological and serum biochemical parameters in the 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg group. In the histopathological analysis, the 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg groups were not associated with any toxicological alterations, whereas the 400 mg/kg group showed prominent toxicological incidences. Nevertheless, the treatment with fisetin ruthenium-p-cymene complex did not exhibit any mutagenic and genotoxic effect in Swiss albino mice. Thus, the safe dose of this novel organometallic complex was determined as 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg without any toxicological and genotoxic potential.

Abstract
The eco-friendly, cost-effective, and green fabrication of nanoparticles is considered a promising area of nanotechnology. Here, we report on the green synthesis and characterization of bovine serum albumin (BSA)-decorated chlorogenic acid silver nanoparticles (AgNPs-CGA-BSA) and the studies undertaken to verify their plausible antioxidant and antineoplastic effects. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), dynamic light scattering, X-ray diffraction, and Fourier transform infrared analyses depict an average mean particle size of ∼96 nm, spherical morphology, and nanocrystalline structure of AgNPs-CGA-BSA. DPPH scavenging and inhibition of lipid peroxidation signify the noticeable in vitro antioxidant potential of the nanoparticles. The in vitro experimental results demonstrate that AgNPs-CGA-BSA shows significant cytotoxicity to Dalton's lymphoma ascites (DLA) cells and generates an enhanced intracellular reactive oxygen species and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) and reduced glutathione (GSH) in DLA cells. Furthermore, mechanism investigation divulges the pivotal role of the downregulated expression of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), and these ultimately lead to apoptotic chromatin condensation in AgNPs-CGA-BSA-treated DLA cells. In addition, in vivo experiments reveal an excellent decrease in tumor cell count, an increase in serum GSH and CAT, SOD, and glutathione peroxidase activities, and a decrease in the malondialdehyde (MDA) level in DLA-bearing mice after AgNPs-CGA-BSA treatment. These findings suggest that the newly synthesized biogenic green silver nanoparticles have remarkable in vitro antioxidant and antineoplastic efficacy that triggers cytotoxicity, oxidative stress, and chromatin condensation in DLA cells and in vivo anticancer efficacy that enhances the host antioxidant status, and these might open a new path in T-cell lymphoma therapy.

Abstract
In this study, we explored the potential of applying biosensors based on silicon nanowire field-effect transistors (bio-NWFETs) as molecular absorption sensors. Using quercetin and Copper (Cu2+) ion as an example, we demonstrated the use of an opto-FET approach for the detection of molecular interactions. We found that photons with wavelengths of 450 nm were absorbed by the molecular complex, with the absorbance level depending on the Cu2+ concentration. Quantitative detection of the molecular absorption of metal complexes was performed for Cu2+ concentrations ranging between 0.1 μM and 100 μM, in which the photon response increased linearly with the copper concentration under optimized bias parameters. Our opto-FET approach showed an improved absorbance compared with that of a commercial ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometry.

Abstract
Cyanobacteria harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) are a global concern. Application of allelochemicals is a promising solution for cyanobacteria control, due to its high efficiency, low cost and ecological safety. Flavonoids (natural polyphenols produced by aquatic plants) are reported capable of effectively inhibiting the growth of algae; however, the molecular mechanism of algae chlorophyll inactivation is still unclear. In this study, quercetin was used as a typical flavonoid, to investigate the inactivation effect of allelochemical on Microcystis aeruginosa chlorophyll a. The absorption and fluorescence spectra showed that chlorophyll reacted with quercetin to form pheophytin, and the formation rate of pheophytin increased with increasing quercetin concentration (1 × 10-5-1 × 10-2 M). FTIR spectra and DFT calculation showed that Mg2+ complexed with the 3-OH and 4-C = O groups in the quercetin ring C so that chlorophyll was inactivated due to the loss of Mg2+ ions. Overall, this study revealed that quercetin inactivated chlorophyll a of cyanobacteria by capturing Mg2+ ions, providing insights into the molecular mechanisms of algal bloom control by allelochemicals.

Abstract
Zein is a desired carrier to construct a delivery system for flavonoids. However, studies examining the binding of flavonoids with zein are still inadequate. Therefore, the structure-affinity relationship and mechanism underlying the interaction between flavonoids and zein were investigated using multiple spectroscopy techniques and molecular docking. The UV-vis spectra revealed ground-state complex formation. The fluorescence quenching spectra suggested that flavonoids effectively quenched the intrinsic fluorescence of zein mainly through static quenching. The structure-affinity relationship revealed the key structural elements and preferred substituents at specific sites of flavonoids related to binding affinity with zein. The synchronous, ANS-binding fluorescence and FT-IR spectra confirmed that flavonoids induced a conformational change in zein secondary structure. Additionally, molecular docking further provided a favorable binding conformation and underlined the important role of hydrophobic interactions and hydrogen bonds in their interactions. These findings suggest that different flavonoid structures significantly influence binding behaviors with zein.

Abstract
Flavonoids are polyphenolic small molecules that are abundant in plant products and are largely recognized for their beneficial health effects. Possessing both antioxidant and prooxidant properties, flavonoids have complex behavior in biological systems. The presented work investigates the intersection between the biological activity of flavonoids and their interactions with copper ions. Copper is required for the proper functioning of biological systems. As such, dysregulation of copper is associated with metabolic disease states such as diabetes and Wilson’s disease. There is evidence that flavonoids bind copper ions, but the biological implications of their interactions remain unclear. Better understanding these interactions will provide insight into the mechanisms of flavonoids’ biological behavior and can inform potential therapeutic targets. We employed a variety of spectroscopic techniques to study flavonoid-Cu(II) binding and radical scavenging activities. We identified structural moieties important in flavonoid-copper interactions which relate to ring substitution but not the traditional structural subclassifications. The biological effects of the investigated flavonoids specifically on copper trafficking were assessed in knockout yeast models as well as in human hepatocytes. The copper modulating abilities of strong copper-binding flavonoids were largely influenced by the relative hydrophobicities. Combined, these spectroscopic and biological data help elucidate the intricate nature of flavonoids in affecting copper transport and open avenues to inform dietary recommendations and therapeutic development.

Abstract
Considering the protective ability of proteins and the potential toxicity of free Cu(II), it was proposed herein that the co-presence of protein could play an important role in suppressing the toxicity of free Cu(II) to the stability of bioactive quercetin if a flavonoid-protein-Cu(II) complex could be formed. In this study, the interaction between quercetin (a major flavonoid in the human diet) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated in the absence and presence of free Cu(II). The results demonstrated that both quercetin and free Cu(II) had a strong ability to quench the intrinsic fluorescence of BSA through a static procedure (i.e., formation of a BSA-monoligand complex). Site marker competitive experiments illustrated that the binding of both quercetin and Cu(II) to BSA mainly took place in subdomain IIA. The quenching process of free Cu(II) with BSA was easily affected by quercetin, and the increased binding capacity possibly resulted from the generation of a ternary quercetin-BSA-Cu(II) complex. The stability and free radical scavenging activity of bioactive quercetin during incubation was promoted in the BSA-diligand complex relative to a quercetin-Cu(II) complex. A quercetin-Cu(II) system could generate reactive oxygen species such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and hydroxyl radicals (•OH), which were significantly inhibited upon BSA binding. Consistently, the cytotoxicity of the quercetin-Cu(II) system to endothelial cells was decreased in the BSA-diligand complex, where the co-presence of BSA played an important role. These results suggest the possibility and advantage of developing albumin-based carriers for the protection of bioactive components and suppression of Cu(II) toxicity in their biomedical and nutritional applications.

Abstract
Proanthocyanidins are key metabolites that explain wine sensorial character (bitterness and astringency) and red wine color changes during aging. Therefore, a fast and accurate method to evaluate the degree of polymerization and the structural composition of the polymeric proanthocyanidins is a crucial analytical tool. Phloroglucinolysis is the most used method for this analysis but, unfortunately, the phloroglucinol adducts of the monomeric flavan-3-ols are not commercially available, making the results less accurate. The aim of this work was the isolation by semi-preparative high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) of these non-commercial compounds and their use for the development of an accurate UHPLC-MS/MS protocol. The purity of each adduct was established via quantitative 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements with 3-trimethylsilyl-propionic-d4 acid sodium salt as the calibration standard. The developed method was applied to evaluate the proanthocyanidins profile of Sagrantino di Montefalco wines in comparison to other well-known tannic wines. Commercial, 6-8 years old Sagrantino wines were demonstrated to be very rich in epicatechin type B procyanidins, to have low galloylation %, and to have a high mean degree of polymerization of the proanthocyanidins with respect to the other analyzed wines.

Abstract
The molecular structure properties-binding affinity relationship of a series of flavonoids and bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated in vitro from comparing the binding constants determined through the fluorescence method. As a result, the binding process was greatly influenced by different structural elements or substituents of flavonoids under analysis. The hydroxylation at the positions C3, C6, C4', C5' (for type I) and C5, C3' (for type II) were in favor of forming hydrogen bonds with the amino acids of BSA, which was of great importance in the binding and interaction between flavonoids and the protein. The decreased affinity could be realized by the methoxylation (C8, C3' and C4') and glycosylation (C3 and C7) of flavonoid type I. However, the adverse trend on binding affinity was observed when the methoxylation and glycosylation appeared at the sites C4' and C7, C4' of structure type II, respectively. Meanwhile, glycosylation at C7 mainly induced the decline in the affinity of flavonoids (type III), and the hydrogenation of the C2C3 double bond for type I was beneficial to increase the affinity on BSA. Moreover, part of flavonoids could mediate the conformational alteration of secondary structures of the protein during the interaction process, which was inferred by means of the synchronous fluorescence spectra. The determinations of ANS fluorescence probe suggested that hydrophobic interaction played an important role in the binding of a majority of flavonoids to BSA. Further evidences from the site-specific experiments revealed that the location of flavonoids 19, 29 and 34 binding on BSA mainly belonged to site I, while compound 3 bound to both sites I and II. Additionally, molecular modelling studies further confirmed the indispensable character of hydrophobic interaction and hydrogen bonds, and illustrated the preferred complex binding behaviors.

Abstract
Amyloid-β (Aβ) accumulation, metal ion dyshomeostasis, oxidative stress, and cholinergic deficit are four major characteristics of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Herein, we report the reactivities of 12 flavonoids against four pathogenic elements of AD: metal-free and metal-bound Aβ, free radicals, and acetylcholinesterase. A series of 12 flavonoids was selected based on the molecular structures that are responsible for multiple reactivities including hydroxyl substitution and transfer of the B ring from C2 to C3. Our experimental and computational studies reveal that the catechol moiety, the hydroxyl groups at C3 and C7, and the position of the B ring are important for instilling multiple functions in flavonoids. We establish a structure-activity relationship of flavonoids that should be useful for designing chemical reagents with multiple reactivities against the pathological factors of AD.

Abstract
The main objective of this study was to develop a simple and efficient spectrophotometric technique combined with chemometrics for the simultaneous determination of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and trimethoprim (TMP) in drug formulations. Specifically, we sought: (i) to evaluate the potential use of rank annihilation factor analysis (RAFA) to pH gradual change spectrophotometric data in order to provide sufficient accuracy and model robustness; and (ii) to determine SMX and TMP concentration in drug formulations without tedious pre-treatments such as derivatization or extraction techniques which are time-consuming and require hazardous solvents. In the proposed method, the spectra of the sample solutions at different pH values were recorded and the pH-spectra bilinear data matrix was generated. On these data, RAFA was then applied to estimate the concentrations of SMX and TMP in synthetic and real samples. Applying RAFA showed that the two drugs could be determined simultaneously with concentration ratios of SMX to TMP varying from 1:30 to 30:1 in the mixed samples (concentration range is 1-30 µg mL-1 for both components). The limits of detection were 0.25 and 0.38 µg mL-1 for SMX and TMP, respectively. The proposed method was successfully applied to the simultaneous determination of SMX and TMP in some synthetic, pharmaceutical formulation and biological fluid samples. In addition, the means of the estimated RSD (%) were 1.71 and 2.18 for SMX and TMP, respectively, in synthetic mixtures. The accuracy of the proposed method was confirmed by spiked recovery test on biological samples with satisfactory results (90.50-109.80%).

Abstract
Curcumin and quercetin are two of the most prominent natural polyphenols with a diverse spectrum of beneficial properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, chemopreventive and chemotherapeutic activity. The complexation of these natural products with bioactive transition metal ions can lead to the generation of novel metallodrugs with enhanced biochemical and pharmacological activities. Within this framework, the synthesis and detailed structural and physicochemical characterization of two novel complex assemblies of Cu(II) with curcumin and quercetin and the ancillary aromatic chelator 2,2'-bipyridine is presented. The two complexes represent the only crystallographically characterized structures with Cu(II) as the central metal ion and curcumin or quercetin as the ligands. The new complexes were biologically evaluated in vitro for their antioxidant potential, both exhibiting strong scavenging activity in the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay, and their plasmid DNA binding/cleavage properties. Both complexes appear to be non-toxic in the eukaryotic experimental model Saccharomyces cerevisiae and merit further investigation of their pharmacological profile.

Abstract
Based on the intrinsic electrochemical features of brucine integrated with carbon nanotubes (brucine/SWNTs), dimeric quinoid brucine was electrochemically generated by electroactivation of a brucine/SWNTs-modified GC electrode and used as a novel electrocatalyst for efficient electro-oxidation of hydroxylamine (HA). The electrocatalytic activity was investigated with cyclic voltammetry in the range pH 2.0 to pH 11.0, and the best electrocatalytic performance of the electrocatalyst was obtained at pH 10.0. By taking advantage of the electrocatalytic activity of the dimeric quinoid brucine toward HA, we have developed an electrochemical sensor for HA measurements based on a brucine/SWNTS-modified GC electrode using amperometry with the applied potential of + 0.1 V (vs. Ag/AgCl). Under the optimized conditions, the current response toward HA concentration shows a linear relationship in the dynamic ranges of 0.1-10 μM and 10-1000 μM with a detection limit of 0.021 μM based on the 3σ criterion. The sensor was used to assay HA in pharmaceuticals including hydroxyurea tablets and pralidoxime iodide injections with satisfactory results. The spike-and-recovery for samples of tap water (n = 9) and lake water (n = 9) was within 97.17-100.16%. Abstract
Sn(II) binds to kaempferol (HKaem, 3,4′,5,7-tetrahydroxy-2-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-4H-1-benzopyran-4-one) at the 3,4-site forming [Sn(II)(Kaem)2] complex in ethanol. DPPH• scavenging efficiency of HKaem is dramatically decreased by SnCl2 coordination due to formation of acid inhibiting deprotonation of HKaem as ligands and thus reduces the radical scavenging activity of the complex via a sequential proton-loss electron transfer (SPLET) mechanism. Moderate decreases in the radical scavenging of HKaem are observed by Sn(CH3COO)2 coordination and by contact between Sn and HKaem, in agreement with the increase in the oxidation potential of the complex compared to HKaem, leading to a decrease in antioxidant efficiency for fruits and vegetables with Sn as package materials.

Abstract
In deep burn injuries, the dermis of the skin is often severely damaged, and hair follicles are also lost and lose the potential for regeneration. Therefore, the development of wound dressings that promote hair follicle regeneration has important clinical significance. In this study, inspired by an ancient Chinese medicine prescription, a novel fibrous membrane (P/Qu/Cup; P, PCL; Qu, quercetin; Cup, cuprorivaite, CaCuSi4O10) containing quercetin-copper (Qu-Cu) chelates was fabricated by using quercetin and a highly bioactive bioceramic (CaCuSi4O10) incorporated in PCL/gelatin electrospun fibers. The fibrous membrane can effectively release Qu and Cu ions to induce proliferation, migration, and differentiation of skin and hair follicle related cells, and the Qu, Cu ions, and Si ions released from the composite membrane revealed synergistic activity to stimulate hair follicle regeneration and wound healing. Our study demonstrated that the analysis of the common components in ancient Chinese prescription is an effective approach to design novel bioactive materials for regenerative medicine.

Abstract
In this work, the flavonol fisetin was selected in order to study its reactivity against Cu(II), a metal ion of interest in biological media and industry. The stoichiometry and apparent formation constant of the complex in ethanolic medium at 25°C were evaluated using spectrophotometric techniques. The resulting stoichiometry was a 1:1 ligand:metal complex, and a log K = 5.17 ± 0.12 was determined. Since two possible chelation sites can be proposed for the complex formation, quantum chemistry calculations were performed on these structures. Calculations suggest that the hydroxyl-keto site is more stable for the complex formation than the catechol site. Flavonoids could exert protection against oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen species, and this biological activity could be affected by chelation with metal ions. This led us to perform a study on the interaction of both, free flavonoid and complex, with reactive oxygen species. Our results showed both compounds quench molecular singlet oxygen photogenerated with visible light, mainly in a physical fashion. In order to analyze a possible protective effect of flavonoid and its complex against oxidative damage in biological environments, the amino acid tryptophan was selected as a model oxidation system. Free flavonoid does not have a marked protective effect, whereas its complex showed a relevant protective effect.

Abstract
With the improvement of living standards, obesity has become a serious health problem all over the word. Currently, the methods and drugs for obesity treatment have some limitations and side effects. Flavonoids are active constituents with various biological activities, widely found in plants, and numerous studies have shown that flavonoids can inhibit obesity and related metabolism disorders effectively. This perspective reviews the recent progress in understanding the anti-obesity effects of flavonoids through modulating food intake, enzyme activities, nutrition absorption, adipogenesis and adipocyte lifecycle, thermogenesis, energy consumption, and intestinal microbiota. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Natural bioactive substance flavonoids have anti-obesity property, which may play a role in anti-obesity drugs or functional food without any side effects. Flavonoids can inhibit weight gain directly or through their biologically active metabolites by various potential pathways. A better understanding of the modulatory effect and the mechanism of flavonoids on obesity will allow us to better utilize flavonoids in plants to treat obesity and related metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
A method using UV-Vis spectroscopy and multivariate tools for simultaneous determination of glucose and cholesterol was developed in this paper. The method is based on the development of the reaction between the analytes (cholesterol and glucose) and enzymatic reagents. The spectra were analyzed by partial least squares regression and artificial neural networks. The precision estimated between nominal and calculate concentration demonstrate that artificial neural network model was adequate to quantify both analytes in serum samples, since the % relative error obtained was in the interval from 5.1 to 8.3. The proposed model was applied to analyze blood serum samples, and the results are similar compared to those obtained employing the reference method.

Abstract
Complex formation and precipitation of germanium by a well-characterized hydrolyzable tannin, 1,2,3,4,6-penta- O-galloyl-β-d-glucose (PGG), was studied in this work. Two simple phenolic compounds, methyl gallate and gallic acid, were also used for comparison purposes. The influence of pH on the stoichiometry and conditional association constants (log K) of the germanium complexes was investigated. UV-visible spectroscopy showed the successive formation of GePGG and Ge2PGG at pH 6.0 and of GePGG at pH 4.0. The results of the precipitation experiments indicated that germanium precipitation was influenced by organic solvents, pH values, the germanium/PGG ratio, and the presence of zinc. Acetone had the biggest effect on the solubility of these complexes, and lower pH values favored the precipitation of the complex. The results showed that a germanium/PGG ratio of more than 3:1 was essential for precipitation. Furthermore, the presence of zinc ions in the solution decreased the precipitation.

Abstract
The current study aims at obtaining a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the complexation of copper ions by 3-hydroxyflavone (3HF), which is one of the most studied compounds of the flavonoid family. To achieve this goal, quantum chemistry calculations combined with electronic spectroscopies, including absorption, fluorescence emission, and excitation, have been used. The formation of successive complexes of stoichiometry (metal/ligand) 1:2, 1:1, and 3:2 has been highlighted. Even under acidic conditions (pH = 4.0), the α-hydroxy-keto function of the molecule presents a high complexing power with regard to copper ions, insofar as a stable complex of 1:2 stoichiometry is obtained with a large conditional stability constant (log β = 8.7). The formation of this predominant species induces a quenching of the dual fluorescence of 3HF, whereas the second complex of stoichiometry 1:1 presents a fluorescence emission.

Abstract
Copper powder has broad applications in the powder metallurgy, heat exchanger, and electronic industries due to its intrinsically high electrical and thermal conductivities. However, the ease of formation of surface oxide or patina layer raises difficulty of storage and handling of copper powder, particularly in the case of Cu microparticles. Here, we developed a thermal chemical vapor deposition chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process for large-scale synthesis of graphene coatings on Cu microparticles, which importantly can remain monodisperse without aggregation after graphene growth at high temperature by using removal spacers. Compared to other protective coating methods, the intrinsic electrical and thermal properties of Cu powder would not be degraded by uniform growth of low defect few-layer graphene on each particle surface. As a result, when the anticorrosion performance test was carried out by immersing the samples in Cu etchant, the corrosion rate of graphene/Cu microparticles was significantly improved (ca three times slower) compared to that of pristine Cu powder, also showing a comparable anticorrosion ability to commercial CuZn30 alloy.
