Abstract
Although plastic pollution and exposure to plastic-related compounds have received worldwide attention, health risks associated with micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) are largely unknown. Emerging evidence suggests MNPs are present in human biofluids and tissue, including blood, breast milk, stool, lung tissue, and placenta; however, exposure assessment is limited and the extent of human exposure to MNPs is not well known. While there is a critical need to establish robust and scalable biomonitoring strategies to assess human exposure to MNPs and plastic-related chemicals, over 10,000 chemicals have been linked to plastic manufacturing with no existing standardized approaches to account for even a fraction of these exposures. This review provides an overview of the status of methods for measuring MNPs and associated plastic-related chemicals in humans, with a focus on approaches that could be adapted for population-wide biomonitoring and integration with biological response measures to develop hypotheses on potential health effects of plastic exposures. We also examine the exposure risks associated with the widespread use of chemical additives in plastics. Despite advancements in analytical techniques, there remains a pressing need for standardized measurement protocols and untargeted, high-throughput analysis methods to enable comprehensive MNP biomonitoring to identify key MNP exposures in human populations. This review aims to merge insights into the toxicological effects of MNPs and plastic additives with an evaluation of analytical challenges, advocating for enhanced research methods to fully assess, understand, and mitigate the public health implications of MNPs.

Abstract
Ratiometric electrochemical sensors are renowned for their dual-signal processing capabilities, enabling automatic correction of background noise and interferences through built-in calibration, thus providing more accurate and reproducible measurements. This characteristic makes them highly promising for food analysis. This review comprehensively summarizes and discusses the latest advancements in ratiometric electrochemical sensors and their applications in food analysis, emphasizing their design strategies, detection capabilities, and practical uses. Initially, we explore the construction and design strategies of these sensors. We then review the detection of various food-related analytes, including nutrients, additives, metal ions, pharmaceutical and pesticide residues, biotoxins, and pathogens. The review also briefly explores the challenges faced by ratiometric electrochemical sensors in food testing and potential future directions for development. It aims to provide researchers with a clear introduction and serve as a reference for the design and application of new, efficient ratiometric electrochemical sensors in food analysis.

Abstract
A novel method has been proposed to determine nine plasticizers in honey samples by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. An efficient sample treatment was proposed (average analyte recoveries between 77% and 118%) involving a double solvent extraction with ethyl acetate, followed by a clean-up step with florisil. Chromatographic analysis (< 21 min) was performed in an Agilent HP-5MS column under programmed temperature conditions. The greenness of the method was assessed with different tools that classified it as environmentally friendly. The method was validated in terms of selectivity, limits of detection (0.1-3.1 μg kg-1) and quantification (0.2-10.3 μg kg-1), linearity, matrix effect, trueness, and precision (relative standard deviation <9%). An analysis of thirty samples from different sources (commercial or experimental apiaries) revealed the presence of residues of five plasticizers in most of the samples. Finally, health risk assessment was evaluated, and the results indicated no associated health risks for consumers.

Abstract
Disposable plastic tableware was widely used and it was particularly important to identify potential hazardous substances in it and evaluate the risk to humans health. In this study, 85 substances were identified in 60 samples (22 bowls, 20 sporks, and 18 straws) by methanol extraction and non-targeted analysis using GC-Orbitrap HRMS. Subsequently, 14 high-risk substances were further screened and their migration in the samples was measured in three food simulants. Finally, based on the proposed safety limit assessment scheme for EU- authorized and unauthorized substances, the risk assessment of exposure to high-risk substances in disposable plastic tableware was performed for three age groups. The results showed that the dibutyl phthalate and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate in some samples exceeded the safety limit value. Overall, the risk of bowls was lower than spock and straws, and the potential exposure risk for young children was higher than that of adults and older children.

Abstract
A new analytical methodology was proposed to determine fourteen bisphenols in honeys from different botanical origins using ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. A fast, efficient, environmentally-friendly and simple sample treatment (recoveries between 81% and 116%; matrix effect <20% for all studied compounds except for bisphenol E, F and S) was proposed, which involved a solvent microextraction with acetone and a small volume/amount of 1-hexanol. Chromatographic analysis (< 15 min) was performed in a Kinetex EVO C18 column under gradient elution mode. The method was validated in terms of selectivity, limits of detection (0.2-1.5 μg/kg) and quantification (0.5-4.7 μg/kg), linearity, matrix effect, trueness, and precision (relative standard deviation <17%). Finally, thirty honey samples were analyzed, revealing the presence of residues of nine bisphenols in some of them. However, quantification was possible only in two cases for bisphenol A, with a concentration of approximately 13 μg/kg.

Abstract
Bisphenol A (BPA) exposure primarily occurs through dietary intake. This study aimed to estimate the extent of dietary BPA exposure among Koreans. A thorough literature search was conducted to establish a BPA content database encompassing common foods consumed in Korea, including various food raw materials and processed food products. Dietary exposure levels were estimated by integrating the constructed BPA database with comprehensive nationwide 24 h-dietary recall datasets. The finding revealed that dietary BPA exposure was low for most Koreans, with a mean of 14.5 ng/kg bw/day, but was higher for preschool-age children (over 23 ng). Canned foods accounted for 9-36% of the total dietary exposure of the highest dietary exposure groups; while across all age groups, a considerable amount was derived from canned tuna, contribution of canned fruits and canned coffee (milk-containing) was high for preschool-age children and adults, respectively. Notably, for adults, a substantial proportion also stemmed from beer packaged in cans. While diet contributed over 80% of aggregate exposure for most age groups, preschool-age children experienced 60% exposure through diet due to additional exposure from indoor dust. Even at the high exposure scenario, aggregate BPA exposure levels remained lower than the current tolerable daily intake (TDI) set by the Korean agency (20 μg/kg bw/day). Nevertheless, most Koreans were exposed to BPA levels surpassing the strictest TDI (0.2 ng/kg bw/day) set by the European Food Safety Authority.

Abstract
In this review article, the research works covering the analytical determination of bisphenol A (BPA) and its structural analogues published from 2018 to present (February 2024) were examined. The review offers an overview of the concentration levels of these xenoestrogens in food and beverages, and discusses concerns that these may possibly pose to the human health and scrutinises, from an analytical perspective, the main biomonitoring approaches that are applied. This comes as a natural evolution of a previous review that covered the same topic but in earlier years (up to 2017). As compared to the past, while the volume of published literature on this topic has not necessarily decreased, the research studies are now much more homogeneous in terms of their geographical origin, i.e., Southern Europe (mainly Italy and Spain). For this reason, an estimated daily intake of the European population could not be calculated at this time. In terms of the analytical approaches that were applied, 67% of the research groups exploited liquid chromatography (LC), with a detection that was prevalently (71%) afforded by mass spectrometry, with over one-fourth of the research teams using fluorescence (26%) and a minority (3%) detecting the analytes with diode array detection. One-third of the groups used gas chromatography (GC)-mass spectrometry achieving comparatively superior efficiency as compared to LC. Derivatisation was performed in 59% of the GC studies to afford more symmetrical signals and enhanced sensitivity. Although the contamination levels are well below the threshold set by governments, routinely biomonitoring is encouraged because of the possible accumulation of these contaminants in the human body and of their interplay with other xenoestrogens.

Abstract
The high-resolution mass spectrometry is a powerful analytical tool for improving food safety and authenticity, but still underused in official control laboratories. The present work is a proof-of-concept study overviewing how liquid-chromatography coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry could be used simultaneously for large-scale screening of contaminants and differentiation of honey samples. Within this study, the samples were extracted using all-in-one QuEChERS-based protocol that allowed for analysis of various anthropogenic contaminants and endogenous compounds. First, targeted-analysis of 52 honey samples led to unequivocal identification of 23 chemicals, including neonicotinoids, triazole fungicides and synergist. Then, suspect-screening using MSDial software allowed for tentative identification of 30 chemicals including plasticizers, flame-retardants and additives. Suspect-screening also made it possible to highlight tentative markers of chestnut honey (deoxyvasicinone, 2-quinolone, indoleacrylic acid and kynurenic acid) and citrus honey (caffeine, 2-oxindole and indole-3-carbinol). Lastly, non-targeted analysis enabled to separate honeys by their type, floral and geographical origins.

Abstract
The accurate and rapid authentication techniques and strategies for highly-similar foods are still lacking. Herein, a novel sequential online extraction electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (S-oEESI-MS) was developed to achieve spatio-temporally resolved ionization and comprehensive characterization of complex foods with multi-components (high, medium, and low polarity substances). Meanwhile, a characteristic marker screening method and an integrated research strategy based on MS fingerprinting, characteristic marker and chemometrics modeling were established, which are especially suitable for the accurate and rapid authentication of highly-similar foods that are difficult to be authenticated by traditional techniques (e.g., LC-MS). Thirty-two batches of highly-similar Atractylodis macrocephalae rhizome from four different origins were used as model samples. As a result, S-oEESI-MS enabled a more comprehensive MS characterization of substance profiles in complex plant samples in 1.0 min. Further, 22 characteristic markers of Atractylodis macrocephalae were ingeniously screened out and combined with multivariate statistical analysis model, the accurate authentication of highly-similar Atractylodis macrocephalae was realized. This study presents a comprehensive strategy for accurate authentication and origin analysis of highly-similar foods, which has potentially significant applications for ensuring food quality and safety.

Abstract
Bisphenols are known endocrine disruptors commonly utilized in food packaging and storage materials, which frequently come into touch with multiple food products packed in them. The bisphenols in fish feed and other feed materials for aquatic organisms are harmful. The consumption of such marine foods is hazardous. Hence, the feed of aquatic products needs to be verified for the presence of bisphenols. The present study was focused on developing and validating a rapid, selective, and sensitive method to quantify 11 bisphenols from the fish feed with dispersive solid-phase extraction, which was cleaned by an optimized amount of activated carbon spheres and silylated by N,O-bis(trimethylsilyl)trifluoro acetamide and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The new method was rigorously tested and verified after carefully tuning various parameters affecting analyte recovery. Limit of detection (LOD) were set at 0.5-5 ng/g and limit of quantification (LOQ) at 1-10 ng/g, respectively, resulting in 95-114% recoveries. Interday and intraday precisions in terms of relative standard deviation were found to be less than 11%. The proposed approach was effectively applied in floating and sinking fish feeds. The obtained results showed that higher concentration of bisphenol A, followed by bisphenol TMC, and bisphenol M at a concentration of 256.10, 159.01, and 168.82 ng/g in floating feed and 88.04, 200.79, and 98.03 ng/g in sinking feed samples, respectively.

Abstract
A magnetic graphene oxide (GO/Fe3O4) nanocomposite was synthesized in one step by a chemical coprecipitation method, which was further used for magnetic solid-phase extraction (MSPE). This study aimed to combine GO/Fe3O4 with ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) to detect the nitroimidazoles (NDZs) and their three major metabolites in honey samples. GO/Fe3O4 was characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, and magnetic property measurement system (MPMS), and the influencing parameters such as adsorbent amount, pH of the dissolved sample solution, sample volume, type and volume of the eluent, shaking speed, and adsorption and desorption time were optimized. Under the optimized conditions, the limits of detection (LOD) and quantitation (LOQ) of the method were 0.003-0.08 μg kg-1 and 0.009-0.3 μg kg-1, respectively, with good linearity reported in the range of 0.5-20 μg kg-1 (R2 ≥ 0.9991). The average recoveries of 10 analytes were in the range of 66.0%-90.8% with relative standard deviations (RSD) lower than 6.9% (n = 6). The preparation of GO/Fe3O4 and the extraction process were convenient and rapid, and consumed small amounts of organic solvents. The optimized method was successfully applied for extracting NDZs and their three major metabolites from honey samples with good accuracy.

Abstract
Chemicals can migrate from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) drink bottles to their content and recycling processes may concentrate or introduce new chemicals to the PET value chain. Therefore, even though recycling PET bottles is key in reducing plastic pollution, it may raise concerns about safety and quality. This study provides a systematic evidence map of the food contact chemicals (FCCs) that migrate from PET drink bottles aiming to identify challenges in closing the plastic packaging loop. The migration potential of 193 FCCs has been investigated across the PET drink bottles lifecycle, of which 150 have been detected to migrate from PET bottles into food simulants/food samples. The study reveals that much research has focused on the migration of antimony (Sb), acetaldehyde and some well-known endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). It indicates and discusses the key influential factors on FCCs migration, such as physical characteristics and geographical origin of PET bottles, storage conditions, and reprocessing efficiency . Although, safety and quality implications arising from the recycling of PET bottles remain underexplored, the higher migration of Sb and Bishphenol A has been reported in recycled (rPET) compared to virgin PET. This is attributed to multiple contamination sources and the variability in the collection, sorting, and decontamination efficiency. Better collaboration among stakeholders across the entire PET bottles lifecycle is needed to ensure sustainable resource management and food contact safety of rPET.

Abstract
For the first time, a systematic review and meta-analysis of the amount of styrene in food was performed. It was found that the type of food is directly related to the amount of styrene. It was found that the amount of fat in food products has a direct effect on the amount of styrene. The final estimated amount of styrene in food is acceptable.
The ingredients in food packaging migrate to the food inside. One of the most common compounds used for packaging of food is polystyrene. This systematic review aimed to investigate the level of styrene’s pollution in food packed with polystyrene. The original articles include keywords styrene, polystyrene, food, contamination, pollution, “food packaging” were searched in Web of science, Medline, Scopus, and Science Direct. A total of 227 studies were achieved. The articles that did not meet the inclusion criteria were excluded with the initial evaluation. The quality assessment was conducted for full paper and finally data were extracted from 8 selected articles. Mata analysis, meta-regression, subgroup analysis, and publication bias was also conducted with comprehensive meta-analysis (CMA) software. Most of the examined samples were dairy products. The amount of fat in dairy products is an important factor in increasing the migration of styrene. The shelf life of product also had effect on migration of styrene. The overall average was estimated as 91.53 ± 26.18 µg/kg in food matrix. This amount is less than the permissible level. The results of meta regression showed that the type of food affects the pooled mean of styrene in the food. There was no publication bias for the selected articles.

Abstract
Several food contact materials (FCMs) contain non-intentionally added substances (NIAS), and most of the substances that migrate from plastic food packaging are unknown. This review aimed to situate the main challenges involving unknown NIAS in plastic food packaging in terms of identification, migration tests, prediction, sample preparation, determination methods and risk assessment trials. Most studies have identified NIAS in plastic materials as polyurethane adhesives (PU), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyester coatings, polypropylene materials (PP), multilayers materials, plastic films, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), recycled materials, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE). Degradation products are almost the primary source of NIAS in plastic FCMs, most from antioxidants as Irganox 1010 and Irgafos 168, following by oligomers and side reaction products. The NIAS assessment in plastics FCMs is usually made by migration tests under worst-case conditions using food simulants. For predicted NIAS, targeted analytical methods are applied using GC-MS based methods for volatile NIAS and GC-MS and LC-MS based methods for semi- and non-volatile NIAS; non-targeted methods to analyze unknown NIAS in plastic FCMs are applied using GC and LC techniques combined with QTOF mass spectrometry (HRMS). In terms of NIAS risk assessment and prioritization, the threshold of toxicological concern (TTC) concept is the most applied tool for risk assessment. Bioassays with sensitive analytical techniques seem to be an efficient method to identify NIAS and their hazard to human exposure; the combination of genotoxicity testing with analytical chemistry could allow the Cramer class III TTC application to prioritize unknown NIAS. The scientific justification for implementing a molecular weight-based cut-off (<1000 Da) in the risk assessment of FCMs should be reevaluated. Although official guides and opinions are being issued on the subject, the whole chain's alignment is needed, and more specific legislation on the steps to follow to get along with NIAS.
