Abstract
In this work, a new ultra-performance liquid chromatograph-evaporative light-scattering detector (UPLC-ELSD) method for quantitation of glycidyl esters (GE) contents in edible oils is presented. The method features complete separation of five GE species within 20 min by a C18 column and gradient elution with a mobile phase consisting of 85% and 2.5% methanol aqueous solutions. The coefficients of regression (R2) were all ≥0.9999 for the linear-quadratic regression curves of GE species in a concentration range of 5~80 μg/mL. The intraday and interday recoveries (%) of GE species in solvent were in a range of 81.3~107.3%, and the intraday and interday coefficients of variation (CVs, %) were all ≤8.6%. The average recovery (%) of GE species spiked in extra-virgin olive oil samples ranged from 88.3~107.8% and the intermediate precision (CV, %) of ≤14% indicated acceptable accuracy and precision. The method exhibited limit of quantification (LOQ) for each GE species (0.6 μg glycidol equivalents/g oil). The method was applied to determine GE concentrations of six commercial oil samples, and total glycidol equivalents were consistent with data obtained by GC-MS method. This UPLC-ELSD method could be adopted for precursory screening and research purposes to improve food safety when MS detectors are unavailable.

Abstract
Lipid nanocarriers incorporating glycerides, polyethylene glycol (PEG)-stearates and phospholipids have attracted great attention for in vivo diagnostic, in vivo imaging, activated or non-activated targeted drug delivery. For quality control purposes, the development of appropriate methods for the quantification of their lipid components is needed. In the present study, we developed an analytical method for lipid quantification in formulated nanoparticles. PEG-stearates and glycerides were analyzed in a single run by RP-UPLC-ELSD using a two-step gradient elution program, while the analysis of phospholipids was accomplished by HILIC-UPLC-ELSD after isolation using an SPE silica column. Using both isolated compounds and commercial lipid standards, calibration curves were produced using second-order polynomials to attain the quantitative evaluation of each lipid excipient. Relative standard deviation of all analytes was between 0.9% and 5.3% for intra-day precision and recovery ranged from 83.5% to 112.2%. The presented method was successfully implemented to study the manufacturing process and stability of the formulated lipid excipients during long-term storage and accelerated conditions. The formulation lipid yield was determined and found equal to 82.5%.

Abstract
Ascertaining the authenticity of the unrefined sesame oil presents an ongoing challenge. Here, the determination of 2-propenal was performed by headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) under mild temperature coupled to gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry, enabling the detection of adulteration of unrefined sesame oil with refined corn or soybean oil. Employing this coupled technique, 2-propenal was detected in all tested refined corn and soybean oils but not in any of the tested unrefined sesame oil samples. Using response surface methodology, the optimum extraction temperature, equilibrium time, and extraction time for the HS-SPME analysis of 2-propenal using carboxen/polydimethylsiloxane fiber were determined to be 55°C, 15 min, and 15 min, respectively, for refined corn oil and 55°C, 25 min, and 15 min, respectively, for refined soybean oil. Under these optimized conditions, the adulteration of unrefined sesame oil with refined corn or soybean oils (1–5%) was successfully detected. The detection and quantification limits of 2-propenal were found to be in the range of 0.008–0.010 and 0.023–0.031 µg mL−1, respectively. The overall results demonstrate the potential of this novel method for the authentication of unrefined sesame oil.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to verify the authenticity of sesame oils using combined analysis of stable isotope ratio, (1)H NMR spectroscopy, and fatty acid profiles of the oils. Analytical data were obtained from 35 samples of authentic sesame oils and 29 samples of adulterated sesame oils currently distributed in Korea. The orthogonal projection to latent structure discriminant analysis technique was used to select variables that most effectively verify the sesame oil authenticity. The variables include δ(13)C value, integration values of NMR peaks that signify the CH3 of n-3 fatty acids, CH2 between two C═C, protons from sesamin/sesamolin, and 18:1n-9, 18:3n-3, 18:2t, and 18:3t content values. The authenticity of 65 of 70 blind samples was correctly verified by applying the range of the eight variables found in the authentic sesame oil samples, suggesting that triple analysis is a useful approach to verify sesame oil authenticity.

Abstract
In 2011, we wrote a review for summarizing the phytochemical analysis (2006-2010) of medicine and food dual purposes plants used in China (Zhao et al., J. Chromatogr. A 1218 (2011) 7453-7475). Since then, more than 750 articles related to their phytochemical analysis have been published. Therefore, an updated review for the advanced development (2011-2014) in this topic is necessary for well understanding the quality control and health beneficial phytochemicals in these materials, as well as their research trends.

Abstract
Polyenylphosphatidylcholine (PPC), a subgroup of the bioactive agents in phosphatidylcholine (PC), has been indicated to possess liver-protective effects. This study aimed to investigate a promising and feasible method to determine PC molecular species with a reverse phase (RP) high-performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) equipped with an evaporative light scattering detector (ELSD). Chromatography was achieved using a C30 column and an isocratic mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile/methanol/triethylamine (40/58/2, v/v/v) at a flow rate of 1 mL/min, and ELSD detection was performed using 80 °C for the drift tube and an air flow rate of 1.8 L/min. To identify individual peaks on the chromatogram, MALDI-TOF-MS was employed for initial detection, and then the results were used to investigate the relationship between the retention time and fatty acyl chains of each PC molecule. A linear correlation was observed between the retention time and theoretical carbon number (TCN) of individual PC species. The compositions of PC molecular species in soybean and sunflower lecithins were similar to each other, and the major PC molecular species were 1,2-dilinoleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (LLPC), 1-oleoyl-2-linoleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (OLPC), and 1-palmitoyl-2-linoleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (PLPC). The contents of LLPC in soybean PC and sunflower PC were 40.6% and 64.3%, respectively.

Abstract
A novel optosensing chip was constructed by anchoring the fluorescence sensing material layer based on molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) coated CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) on a chip for highly selective and sensitive optosensing of sesamol in sesame oil. Many factors that affected the performance of the optosensing chip based on MIP-coated QDs are discussed. Under optimized conditions, the relative fluorescence intensity of the optosensing chip decreased linearly (r(2) > 0.99) with increasing sesamol concentration in the range from 2.4 × 10(-6) to 1.2 × 10(-3) mol L(-1) with a detection limit of 7.2 × 10(-8) mol L(-1). The relative standard deviation for five replicate detections of 4.8 × 10(-4) mol L(-1) sesamol was 2.2%. Recoveries of 94.8-102.3% were achieved by direct detection when the optosensing chip was used for the selective detection of sesamol in sesame oil. Practically, the optosensing approach showed high sensitivity, good selectivity, and excellent reproducibility for the detection of sesamol in real oil samples.
