Abstract
Background The relationship between physical activity (PA), telomere length, and phenotypic age (PhenoAge) represents a pivotal area of investigation in aging research. Methods The study encompassed a cohort of 6200 participants aged 20 years and above, sourced from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Physical activity (PA) levels were assessed employing the Global Physical Activity Questionnaire, while DNA samples were collected to determine telomere length, measured in base pairs. PhenoAge, an emerging aging index relying on nine distinct chemical biomarkers, was computed. Results Incorporating a fully adjusted model, our analysis showed significant correlations between PA engagement and PhenoAge [Low PA, β (95 % CI): 0.039(-0.071,-0.008), p = 0.021; Moderate PA, β (95 % CI): 0.058(-0.082,-0.034), p < 0.001; High PA, β (95 % CI): 0.069(-0.096,-0.042), p < 0.001]. Furthermore, a positive link emerged between elevated PA levels and telomere length, with a β (95 % CI) of 0.011(0.001, 0.022), p = 0.034. A mediation analysis was performed, demonstrating that telomere length mediated the connection between PA and PhenoAge, with a proportion mediated calculated at 3.57 %. Conclusions Our findings suggest that PA may play a key role in mitigating aging processes by preserving telomere length, highlighting the potential of PA as a target for interventions aimed at promoting healthy aging and longevity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mitochondrial dysfunction has been implicated in the development of mental disorders, yet the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. In this study, we employed summary-data-based Mendelian randomization (SMR) analysis to explore the associations between mitochondrial-related genes and seven common mental disorders across gene expression, DNA methylation, and protein levels. METHOD Summary statistics from genome-wide association studies were used for seven mental disorders, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder, anxiety, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and schizophrenia (SCZ). Instrumental variables associated with 1136 mitochondria-related genes were derived from summary statistics for DNA methylation, gene expression, and protein quantitative trait loci. SMR analyses and colocalization analyses were then conducted across these three biological levels to explore the associations with each of the seven mental disorders. RESULTS We identified mitochondria-related genes associated with mental disorders with multi-omics evidence: RMDN1 for ADHD, and ACADVL, ETFA, MMAB, and PPA2 for SCZ. Specifically, an increase of one standard deviation in the level of RMDN1 was linked to a 12 % decrease in the risk of developing ADHD (OR = 0.88, 95 % CI: 0.83-0.94). Increased levels of ETFA (OR = 1.79, 95 % CI: 1.24-2.60) and MMAB (OR = 1.10, 95 % CI: 1.05-1.16) were significantly associated with increased risk of SCZ. Conversely, high levels of ACADVL (OR = 0.50, 95 % CI: 0.33-0.77) and PPA2 (OR = 0.68, 95 % CI: 0.55-0.85) were associated with a reduced risk of SCZ. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggested that dysfunction in mitochondria-related genes may underlie the molecular mechanisms of ADHD and SCZ, providing novel biomarkers for diagnosis and therapeutic interventions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to delineate the evolving knowledge structure of programmed cell death in esophageal cancer and identify key thematic trends, influential collaborations, and emerging areas for future research. METHODS A bibliometric approach was applied to 2677 publications retrieved from the Web of Science Core Collection (2000-2024). Three complementary tools-CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and bibliometrix-were employed to visualize co-citation networks, detect citation bursts, and map collaborative patterns among authors, institutions, and countries. Inclusion criteria focused on articles and reviews that addressed esophageal cancer in conjunction with apoptosis, necroptosis, pyroptosis, ferroptosis, autophagy, or related pathways. RESULTS Publication outputs grew markedly, reflecting a shift from early investigations of basic apoptotic mechanisms to broader explorations of necroptosis, pyroptosis, and ferroptosis. China led in publication volume and citations, driven by substantial governmental funding and large clinical cohorts. The United States and Japan also contributed significantly, forming international research networks that spanned Asia and Europe. Leading institutions, particularly Zhengzhou University, demonstrated extensive collaborations. Journals such as Oncology Letters and Oncology Reports were prominent outlets for new findings, while highly cited references highlighted hypoxia, immune checkpoint blockade, and emerging gene-editing strategies. Keyword analyses revealed the ascendance of immuno-oncology, network pharmacology, and translational applications targeting multiple regulated cell death pathways. CONCLUSION Bibliometric evidence underscores a rapid expansion of multidisciplinary research that integrates diverse cell death pathways in esophageal cancer. Continued international collaborations, leveraging advanced genomics and immunologic strategies, are poised to accelerate translational breakthroughs and enable more personalized, effective therapies.

Abstract
Purpose: To examine the association between trajectories of physical activity (PA) over 12 years and epigenetic age acceleration (EAA) in 3600 middle-aged and older adults of the Health and Retirement Study. Methods: Latent variable mixture modeling identified subgroups with similar trajectories of vigorous, moderate, and light PA from 2004 to 2016. Six EAAs, including Horvath's age acceleration, Hannum's age acceleration, GrimAge acceleration, PhenoAge acceleration, DunedinPoAm acceleration, and ZhangAA were calculated by regressing epigenetic age on chronological age in 2016. Linear regression models tested associations of PA trajectories with EAAs, controlling for age, sex, race, education, smoking, alcohol consumption, and depression. Results: Five trajectories were identified for each PA type. Moderate and light PA trajectories were stable or slightly changed over time. In contrast, vigorous PA trajectories were either consistently low (27.2%), slightly increased at a low level (14.9%), decreased from moderate to low levels (25.9%), increased to a high level (11.9%), or consistently high (20.1%). Moderate PA trajectories were negatively associated with EAA across six epigenetic clocks (p < .01). Light PA trajectories were not associated with any EAA. Vigorous PA trajectories were associated with slower GrimAge acceleration (p = .004) and DunedinPoAm acceleration (p = .03). Participants that showed consistently high or increasing vigorous PA had slower EAA compared to those with consistently low vigorous PA. Conclusion: Moderate and vigorous, but not light, PA trajectories were associated with slower EAAs.

Abstract
Background Muscle mass plays a pivotal role in health maintenance, yet its connection to biological aging remains underexplored. This study investigates the association between appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI) and phenotypic age(PhenoAge), while examining the mediating role of systemic inflammation. Methods The analysis included 7,440 participants from the NHANES 2011-2018. Phenotypic Age Acceleration (PhenoAgeAccel) was calculated as the residuals from regressing PhenoAge on chronological age. Multivariable linear regression analyses were performed to assess the association between ASMI and PhenoAgeAccel. Mediation analysis was conducted to quantify the extent to which systemic inflammation contributes to this association. Results Our analysis revealed that higher ASMI is linked to slower biological aging, as evidenced by lower PhenoAgeAccel (β = -0.48, 95% CI: -0.66 to -0.29, p = 0.0001). Systemic inflammation partially mediated this effect, with a mediation proportion of 35.1%. The association varied notably across demographic and health-related subgroups, being particularly significant in females, individuals with obesity, and those with lower physical activity. Conclusion These findings highlight the critical importance of muscle mass in slowing biological aging, with systemic inflammation emerging as a key biological mediator. The public health implications are substantial, suggesting that targeted interventions-such as resistance training, anti-inflammatory diets, and personalized medical approaches-could play a pivotal role in decelerating biological aging and improving long-term health outcomes.

Abstract
Aging is the result of a complex interplay of physical, environmental, and social factors, leading to an increased prevalence of chronic age-related diseases that burden health and social care systems. As the global population ages, it is crucial to understand the aged immune system, which undergoes declines in both innate and adaptive immunity. This immune decline exacerbates the aging process, creating a feedback loop that accelerates the onset of diseases, including infectious diseases, autoimmune disorders, and cancer. Intervention strategies, including dietary adjustments, pharmacological treatments, and immunomodulatory therapies, represent promising approaches to counteract immunosenescence. These interventions aim to enhance immune function by improving the activity and interactions of aging-affected immune cells, or by modulating inflammatory responses through the suppression of excessive cytokine secretion and inflammatory pathway activation. Such strategies have the potential to restore immune homeostasis and mitigate age-related inflammation, thus reducing the risk of chronic diseases linked to aging. In summary, this review provides insights into the effects and underlying mechanisms of immunosenescence, as well as its potential interventions, with particular emphasis on the relationship between aging, immunity, and nutritional factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sufficient physical activity and sleep duration are essential for overall health. While one-third of the US population reports short sleep (<7 h), which is proven to link with negative health status. Current evidence on the relationship between physical activity, sedentary behavior, and serum insulin level in short sleep groups is limited. METHODS The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) was used to conduct this cross-sectional study of 8,494 adults (NHANES) 2007-2018. Serum insulin was quantitatively tested by human insulin immunoassay. Short sleep conditions were defined as ≤7 h per night. Physical activity conditions, including work activity, recreational activity, and sedentary behavior, were self-reported in NHANES by the Physical Activity Questionnaire using a 7-day recall method. The main analyses utilized weighted linear regression models due to the complex multistage sampling design of NHANES. Subgroup analysis and the influence of different lipid indices were explored in this study. In addition, a sensitivity analysis of participants without diabetes was conducted. RESULTS In fully adjusted models, increased levels of work and recreational activity significantly reduced insulin levels, with β values 95% CI = -0.002 (-0.003, 0.001) and β values 95% CI = -0.008 (-0.012, -0.003), respectively. However, sedentary behavior was positively associated with insulin levels, with a β value 95% CI =0.022 (0.009, 0.034). The sensitivity analysis further confirmed the benefits of recreational activity in controlling insulin levels. Through sex stratification analysis, it seemed that physical activity was more obviously impacted in the male than female groups. CONCLUSIONS Overall, our analysis demonstrates that in short sleepers, an increased level of work and recreational activity is beneficial to control the insulin level, and more sedentary time is harmful. However, this association might be discrepant in different sexes and different levels of lipid indices.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gut microbiota and depression have garnered attention. The dietary index for gut microbiota (DI-GM) is a newly proposed index that reflects the diversity of gut microbiota, yet its association with depression remains unstudied. METHODS Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were analyzed. Depression was assessed using Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). Dietary recall data were used to calculate the DI-GM (including components beneficial and unfavorable to gut microbiota). Multivariable weighted logistic and linear regression were employed to investigate the association of DI-GM with depression and total PHQ-9 score. The potential mediating role of phenotypic age and body mass index (BMI) was explored. Secondary analyses included subgroup analyses, restricted cubic spline (RCS), and multiple imputation. RESULTS A higher DI-GM and beneficial gut microbiota score were associated with a lower prevalence of depression (DI-GM: OR = 0.94, 95% CI = 0.89, 0.99; beneficial gut microbiota score: OR = 0.88, 95% CI = 0.82, 0.94) and lower total PHQ-9 score (DI-GM: β=-0.09, 95% CI=-0.14, -0.04; beneficial gut microbiota: β=-0.15, 95% CI=-0.21, -0.08). RCS indicated a non-linear relationship between DI-GM and depression. A significant mediating effect of phenotypic age (proportion of mediation: 19.81%, 95% CI: 12.86-63.00%) and BMI (proportion of mediation: 16.49%, 95% CI: 12.87-62.00%) was observed. CONCLUSIONS The newly proposed DI-GM was negatively associated with the prevalence of depression and total PHQ-9 score. Mediation analyses demonstrated a significant mediating effect of phenotypic age and BMI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acceleration of aging is a major challenge in public health. Previous studies have focused on the associations between specific types of exercise or overall levels of physical activity with accelerated aging, with less attention given to the weekly exercise patterns. OBJECTIVE To explore the relationship between weekly exercise patterns and acceleration of aging among American adults. METHODS We extracted data from the 2015-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), involving 9850 participants aged ≥20 with comprehensive records on exercise and phenotypic age. Hierarchical clustering categorized participants into three groups based on weekly exercise time and days: cluster 1 (Rare or No Exercise), cluster 2 (Moderate Frequency, Moderate Duration) and cluster 3 (Moderate Frequency, Long Duration). Acceleration of aging was defined as the phenotypic age advance >0. RESULTS After full adjustment, weekly exercise time and days showed the significant non-linear negative correlation with accelerated aging. The risk of accelerated aging was lowest when weekly exercise days reached five and the weekly exercise time reached three hours. Both cluster 2 and cluster 3 were significantly negatively correlated with acceleration of aging. No significant differences were observed in the association with accelerated aging between cluster 2 and cluster 3. CONCLUSIONS These findings highlight the importance of targeted exercise programs for healthy aging. They also emphasize the need for public health initiatives to integrate regular physical activity into daily routines to improve the longevity and well-being of American adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Monitoring free-living physical activity (PA) through wearable devices enables the real-time assessment of activity features associated with health outcomes and provision of treatment recommendations and adjustments. The conclusions of studies on PA and health depend crucially on reliable statistical analyses of digital data. Data analytics, however, are challenging due to the various metrics adopted for measuring PA, different aims of studies, and complex temporal variations within variables. The application, interpretation, and appropriateness of these analytical tools have yet to be summarized. OBJECTIVE This research aimed to review studies that used analytical methods for analyzing PA monitored by accelerometers. Specifically, this review addressed three questions: (1) What metrics are used to describe an individual's free-living daily PA? (2) What are the current analytical tools for analyzing PA data, particularly under the aims of classification, association with health outcomes, and prediction of health events? and (3) What challenges exist in the analyses, and what recommendations for future research are suggested regarding the use of statistical methods in various research tasks? METHODS This scoping review was conducted following an existing framework to map research studies by exploring the information about PA. Three databases, PubMed, IEEE Xplore, and the ACM Digital Library, were searched in February 2024 to identify related publications. Eligible articles were classification, association, or prediction studies involving human PA monitored through wearable accelerometers. RESULTS After screening 1312 articles, 428 (32.62%) eligible studies were identified and categorized into at least 1 of the following 3 thematic categories: classification (75/428, 17.5%), association (342/428, 79.9%), and prediction (32/428, 7.5%). Most articles (414/428, 96.7%) derived PA variables from 3D acceleration, rather than 1D acceleration. All eligible articles (428/428, 100%) considered PA metrics represented in the time domain, while a small fraction (16/428, 3.7%) also considered PA metrics in the frequency domain. The number of studies evaluating the influence of PA on health conditions has increased greatly. Among the studies in our review, regression-type models were the most prevalent (373/428, 87.1%). The machine learning approach for classification research is also gaining popularity (32/75, 43%). In addition to summary statistics of PA, several recent studies used tools to incorporate PA trajectories and account for temporal patterns, including longitudinal data analysis with repeated PA measurements and functional data analysis with PA as a continuum for time-varying association (68/428, 15.9%). CONCLUSIONS Summary metrics can quickly provide descriptions of the strength, frequency, and duration of individuals' overall PA. When the distribution and profile of PA need to be evaluated or detected, considering PA metrics as longitudinal or functional data can provide detailed information and improve the understanding of the role PA plays in health. Depending on the research goal, appropriate analytical tools can ensure the reliability of the scientific findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM) is a significant public health concern, especially among individuals with short sleep duration. Understanding the relationship between physical exercise and DM in this population is crucial for developing effective prevention strategies. However, the presence of a potential threshold effect of exercise on DM risk remains unclear. METHODS Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning from 2007 to 2018, this population-based study investigated the association between physical exercise and DM in individuals with short sleep duration (no more than 7 hours per night). Weighted logistic regression analyses were conducted, adjusting for demographic and lifestyle factors. Additionally, a two-piecewise linear regression model was employed to identify any threshold effect of exercise on DM risk. RESULTS This study included 15,092 participants identified with short sleep duration. Demographic characteristics stratified by DM status indicate higher prevalence among certain groups, such as middle-aged and older adults, males, and non-Hispanic Whites. The analysis revealed an inverse association between exercise levels and DM prevalence among the short sleep population. In the fully adjusted model, individuals engaging in sufficient exercise (> 600 MET-minutes/week) exhibited significantly reduced odds of developing DM [OR (95% CI): 0.624(0.527,0.738), p < 0.001]. Furthermore, the segmented regression model identified an inflection point at 2000 MET-minutes/week, below which a significant correlation between exercise and DM was observed. CONCLUSIONS This study provides evidence of a threshold effect of physical exercise on its association with DM in individuals with short sleep duration. Tailored exercise interventions targeting this population may help mitigate DM risk and improve overall health outcomes. Further research is warranted to validate these findings and explore optimal exercise thresholds for DM prevention strategies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Our study aims to examine the independent and combined associations of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations and physical activity (PA) status with phenotypic age (PhenoAge). METHOD The analysis included 18,738 participants from the NHANES 2007-2010 & 2015-2018. Phenotypic Age Acceleration (PhenoAgeAccel) was calculated as the residuals from regressing PhenoAge on chronological age. Weighted multivariable logistic regression models were used to analysis the relationship between 25(OH)D and PA with PhenoAgeAccel. Population attributable fraction (PAF) was used to estimate the proportion of PhenoAgeAccel which could be avoided if exposure were eliminated. RESULTS The multivariate-adjusted OR (95%CI) for PhenoAgeAccel with high 25(OH)D and adequate PA were 0.657 (0.549,0.787) (p < 0.001) for all, 0.663 (0.538,0.818) (p < 0.001) for participants whose age ≤65years old. Furthermore, there was multiplicative interaction between 25(OH)D and PA in age ≤65 years old group (0.729 (0.542,0.979), p = 0.036). High 25(OH)D level and adequate PA reduced the risk of PhenoAgeAccel by 14.3 % and 14.2 %, respectively. Notably, 30.7 % decrease was attributable to both high 25(OH)D level and engaging in adequate PA concurrently. Combining 25(OH)D above 80.4 nmol/l with PA decreased PhenoAge by 1.291 years (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION Higher 25(OH)D level was associated with lower risk of biological ageing. Combining 25(OH)D and PA demonstrated enhanced protective effects, especially in middle or young adults. These findings underscore the importance of outdoor PA in slowing down the aging process.

Abstract
Introduction Sleeping disorders is a high prevalent disorder, and although previous research has suggested a link between smoking and sleep disorders, there is a lack of large-scale, nationally representative studies examining this association across multiple sleep outcomes and exploring dose-response relationships. Methods This study used data from 30,269 participants from the NHANES database (2007-2020). Weighted logistic regression models were used to assess the associations between smoking status (non-smoker, light smoker, moderate smoker, and heavy smoker) and various sleep outcomes, including insufficient sleep duration, reported sleep problems, snoring, snorting, or stopping breathing during sleep, and daytime sleepiness. Dose-response relationships were explored using restricted cubic splines. Results Compared to non-smokers, heavy smokers had significantly higher odds of experiencing insufficient sleep duration with OR 1.732 (95% CI 1.528-1.963, P <0.001), reported sleep problems with OR 1.990 (95% CI 1.766-2.243, P <0.001), occasional or frequent snoring with OR 1.908 (95% CI 1.164-3.128, P = 0.03), and occasional or frequent snorting or stopping breathing during sleep with OR 1.863 (95% CI 1.183-2.936, P = 0.022), while results for sometimes, often or almost always being overly sleepy during the day with OR 1.257 (95% CI 0.872-1.810, P = 0.115) are not significant. A trend of positive correlation was observed between smoking and all sleep disorder outcomes (P for trend < 0.05). Dose-response analyses revealed that the odds of these sleep outcomes increased with higher smoking levels. Conclusion Smoking is significantly associated with various sleep disorders, and a dose-response relationship exists between smoking levels and the odds of experiencing these sleep problems. These findings underscore the importance of addressing smoking as a modifiable risk factor for poor sleep health and suggest that reducing smoking, even if complete cessation is not achieved, may have positive effects on sleep outcomes.

Abstract
Sleep is a modifiable behavior that can be targeted in interventions aimed at promoting healthy aging. This study aims to (i) identify the sleep duration trend in US adults; (ii) investigate the relationship between sleep duration and phenotypic age; and (iii) explore the role of exercise in this relationship. Phenotypic age as a novel index was calculated according to biomarkers collected from US adults based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Sleep information was self-reported by participants and discerned through individual interviews. The principal analytical method employed was weighted multivariable linear regression modeling, which accommodated for the complex multi-stage sampling design. The potential non-linear relationship was explored using a restricted cubic spline (RCS) model. Furthermore, subgroup analyses evaluated the potential effects of sociodemographic and lifestyle factors on the primary study outcomes. A total of 13,569 participants were finally included in, thereby resulting in a weighted population of 78,880,615. An examination of the temporal trends in sleep duration revealed a declining proportion of individuals with insufficient and markedly deficient sleep time since the 2015-2016 cycle. Taken normal sleep group as a reference, participants with extreme short sleep [β (95% CI) 0.582 (0.018, 1.146), p = 0.044] and long sleep [β (95% CI) 0.694 (0.186, 1.203), p = 0.010] were both positively associated with phenotypic age using the fully adjusted model. According to the dose-response relationship between sleep duration and phenotypic age, long sleep duration can benefit from regular exercise activity, whereas short sleep duration with more exercise tended to have higher phenotypic age. There is an inverted U-shaped relationship between short and long sleep durations and phenotypic age. This study represents an important step forward in our understanding of the complex relationship between sleep and healthy aging. By shedding light on this topic and providing practical exercise recommendations for promoting healthy sleep habits, researchers can help individuals live longer, healthier, and more fulfilling lives.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Aging is an important factor in the development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The senescent cells can be recognized and removed by NK cells. However, NK cell function is gradually inactivated with age. Therefore, this study used senescence as an entry point to investigate how NK cells affect AD. METHODS The study validated the correlation between cognition and aging through a prospective cohort of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database. A cellular trajectory analysis of the aging population was performed using single-cell nuclear transcriptome sequencing data from patients with AD and different ages. The genome-wide association study (GWAS) cohort of AD patients was used as the outcome event, and the expression quantitative trait locus was used as an instrumental variable. Causal associations between genes and AD were analyzed by bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) and co-localization. Finally, clinical cohorts were constructed to validate the expression of key genes. RESULTS A correlation between cognition and aging was demonstrated using 2,171 older adults over 60 years of age. Gene regulation analysis revealed that most of the highly active transcription factors were concentrated in the NK cell subpopulation of AD. NK cell trajectories were constructed for different age populations. MR and co-localization analyses revealed that CHD6 may be one of the factors influencing AD. CONCLUSION We explored different levels of AD and aging from population cohorts, single-cell data, and GWAS cohorts and found that there may be some correlations of NK cells between aging and AD. It also provides some basis for potential causation.

Abstract
Background The body of evidence supporting the beneficial effects of Tai Chi in reducing anxiety and depressive symptoms in older adults is steadily increasing. Nonetheless, there remains a scarcity of studies directly comparing the clinical effectiveness of various Tai Chi exercises in addressing anxiety and depressive symptoms in older adults. Thus, this study aimed to systematically review and analyze the therapeutic efficacy of four types of Tai Chi interventions in enhancing anxiety and depressive symptoms in older adults. Methods During the period up to July 26, 2023, searches were conducted in the Web of Science, PubMed, the Cochrane Library, CNKI, and the Chinese Scientific Journal Database (VIP). The language scope encompassed both English and Chinese. Two independent reviewers conducted the literature review and data extraction. Review Manager 5.4 was employed for traditional meta-analysis and risk assessment, while version 15 of STATA software was used for generating evidence and funnel plots for network meta-analysis. This study was registered in PROSPERO number CRD 42023442270. Result In this analysis, a total of 20 studies were included, involving 1798 participants. The findings of the pairwise meta-analysis revealed that Tai Chi intervention was more effective than the control group in reducing anxiety (SMD: -1.19, 95% CI: -2.04, -0.34, p < 0.05) and depression (SMD: -0.65, 95% CI: -0.95, -0.65, p < 0.05) symptoms among older adults. The network meta-analysis specifically focused on anxiety symptoms and found that Yang-style Tai Chi (69.9%) had the most favorable outcome, followed by the 24-form Simplified Tai Chi (66.8%). In terms of depression symptoms, the Tai Chi Exercise Program (92.6%) had the highest performance, followed by Yang-style Tai Chi (77.9%). Conclusion The findings of this study imply that Tai Chi can have beneficial outcomes in the reduction of anxiety and depressive symptoms among older individuals. Specifically, when examining various forms of Tai Chi interventions, it was observed that Yang-style Tai Chi exhibited a greater efficacy in alleviating anxiety symptoms, whereas Tai Chi exercise programs demonstrated a higher effectiveness in improving depressive symptoms. Nonetheless, it is strongly advised that older adults select an exercise program that aligns with their interests and preferences, as this can enhance social integration and overall well-being. Abstract
Objective To perform a meta-analyses to understand the current status of and risk factors for depression in older adults with hypertension. Methods Eight electronic databases and two clinical trial registries were searched to identify studies examining the incidence of and risk factors for depression among older adults with hypertension. The databases were searched from inception to June 2023. The included studies were evaluated using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale and the evaluation tool recommended by the Agency for Health care Research and Quality. Results A total of 18 studies with 29,694 patients were included. Meta-analysis results showed that the prevalence of depression in older adults with hypertension was 29%. The risk factors for depression among this population included sex [OR value 95% confidence interval 2.24 (1.32, 3.82)], education level [OR 95% CI 1.79 (1.02, 3.14)], residence [OR 95% CI 1.37 (1.24, 1.52)], comorbidities [OR 95% CI 1.79 (1.69, 1.90)], hypertension classification [OR 95% CI 2.81 (1.79, 4.42)], marital status [OR 95% CI 1.50 (1.33, 1.69)], sleep status [OR 95% CI 2.86 (2.21, 3.69)], activity limitation [OR 95% CI 3.42 (2.84, 4.13)], drinking [OR 95% CI 2.25 (1.58, 3.19)], social support [OR 95% CI 3.26 (2.42, 4.41)], living alone [OR 95% CI 1.79 (1.57, 2.04)], stressful events [OR 95% CI 1.62 (1.39, 1.90)], and course of diseases [OR 95% CI 3.23 (2.10, 4.97)]. Conclusion The incidence of depression in older adults with hypertension is high, and there are many risk factors. Clinical health care professionals should intervene early to target the above risk factors to reduce the incidence of depression in older adults with hypertension worldwide. Abstract
Background Square dance is gaining increasing popularity among middle-aged and older Chinese women who are also at high risk of sleep disturbance. Although previous studies have shown exercise could improve sleep quality, the association between square dance and sleep quality remains to be discussed, and even less is known about the potential mechanism underlying this association. Purpose This study aims to investigate the relationship between square dance and sleep quality and test if social support and depressive symptoms together play a serial mediating role in the influence of square dance on sleep quality. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted among 549 middle-aged and older Chinese females from September to December 2020 in Shao Yang City, Hunan Province of China, with ethics approval granted (SYU [2020]002). Square dance involvement was assessed by three questions about the time participants spent in square dance. Social support, depressive symptoms, and sleep quality were measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Social Support Self-Rating Scale (SSRS), and 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), respectively. The serial mediation model was analyzed by the bootstrapping method to assess whether social support and depressive symptoms mediate the relationship between square dance and sleep quality. Results Two-thirds of the participants had high involvement in square dance and most reported a moderate and high level of social support (98.54%). The prevalence of depressive symptoms and sleep disturbance was 19.49 and 26.78%, respectively. The serial mediation model showed a significant association between square dance and sleep quality, which was fully mediated by social support and depressive symptoms in a serial model (total effect c = -0.114, 95%CI = -0.227 to -0.001; direct effect c' = -0.036, 95% CI = -0.138 to 0.065; total indirect effect ab = -0.077, 95% CI = -0.139 to-0.016). Conclusion Our study extends the understanding of how square dance is associated with sleep quality through the serial mediating roles of social support and depressive symptoms. It provides crucial implications for developing square dance interventions to improve sleep quality among middle-aged and older Chinese females.
