Abstract
Silver-metal organic framework (Ag@MOF) has exhibited outstanding antimicrobial activity in antimicrobial applications, and reducing the biotoxicity associated with silver has become a research priority. In this study, Ag@MOF was initially modified with sodium alginate (SA) to form SA-Ag@MOF. The results showed that SA could control the release of Ag+, reducing the release by about 8% at 24 h, and the biotoxicity was significantly reduced. Finally, SA-Ag@MOF was applied as an antimicrobial agent in citric acid-modified PVA film to develop a novel composite antimicrobial film. When added at 2 MIC, the CA3-M2 film can effectively inhibit the growth of E. coli and S. aureus, and the inhibition rate has reached 98%. For white radish packaging applications, CA3-M2 film inhibited the growth of surface microorganisms, while ensuring moisture and tissue hardness to extend shelf-life up to 7 days. Overall, the strategy conceived here can be a theoretical basis for novel antimicrobial packaging.

Abstract
In recent years, the development of environmentally friendly packaging materials using biodegradable polymers has emerged as a key challenge for scientists and consumers in response to resource depletion and environmental issues caused by plastic packaging materials. Starch and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) are being recognized as excellent candidates for producing biodegradable food packaging films. Polymer blending has emerged as a practical approach to overcome the limitations of biopolymer films by developing films with unique properties and enhancing overall performance. This review briefly introduces the molecular structure and properties of starch and PVA, summarizes the common preparation methods and properties of starch/PVA blend films, and focuses on different strategies used to enhance starch/PVA blend films, including nanoparticles, plant extracts, and cross-linking agents. Additionally, this study summarizes the application of starch/PVA blend films as active and smart packaging in food preservation systems. This study demonstrates that starch and PVA blends have potential in manufacturing biodegradable food films with excellent properties due to their excellent compatibility and intermolecular interactions, and can be used as packaging films for a variety of foods to extend their shelf life.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effect of cinnamon essential oil (CEO)-loaded metal-organic frameworks (CEO@MOF) on the properties of gelatin/pullulan (Gel/Pull)-based composite films (Gel/Pull-based films). The incorporation of CEO@MOF into Gel/Pull-based films demonstrated significant antimicrobial activity against S. aureus, S. enterica, E. coli, and L. monocytogenes. Additionally, CEO@MOF integrated film exhibited a 98.16 % ABTS radical scavenging, with no significant change in the mechanical properties of the neat Gel/Pull film. The UV blocking efficiency of the composite films increased significantly from 81.38 to 99.56 % at 280 nm with the addition of 3 wt% CEO@MOF. Additionally, Gel/Pull/CEO@MOF films effectively extended the shelf life of meat preserved at 4 °C by reducing moisture loss by 3.35 %, maintaining the pH within the threshold limit (6.2), and inhibiting bacterial growth by 99.9 %. These results propose that CEO@MOF has significant potential as an effective additive in active packaging to improve shelf life and food safety.

Abstract
Starch biopolymer films incorporated with chitosan nanoparticles (CNP) or starch/CNP films are promising alternatives to non-degradable food packaging materials. The films can be utilized for active food packaging applications because CNP exhibits antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, which can improve food shelf-life. Nonetheless, knowledge of the effects of CNP inclusion on the properties of starch films is not fully elucidated. This paper reviews the influences of various concentrations of CNP, sizes of CNP, and other additives on the mechanical, thermal, barrier, antimicrobial, antioxidant, biodegradability, and cytotoxicity properties of starch/CNP films as well as the mechanisms involved in relation to food packaging applications. The usage of starch/CNP films for active food packaging can help to reduce environmental issues and contribute to food safety and security.

Abstract
The development of biodegradable active packaging films with hydrophobic characteristics is vital for extending the shelf life of food and reducing the reliance on petroleum-based plastics. In this study, novel hydrophobic cerium-based metal-organic framework (Ce-MOF) nanoparticles were successfully synthesized. The Ce-MOF nanoparticles were then incorporated into the cassava starch matrix at varying concentrations (0.5 %, 1.5 %, 3 %, and 4 % w/w of total solid) to fabricate cassava-based active packaging films via the solution casting technique. The influence of Ce-MOF on the morphology, thermal attributes, and physicochemical properties of the cassava film was subsequently determined through further analyses. Biomedical analysis including antioxidant activity and the cellular morphology evaluation in the presence of the films was also conducted. The results demonstrated that the consistent dispersion of Ce-MOF nanofillers within the cassava matrix led to a significant enhancement in the film's crystallinity, thermal stability, antioxidant activity, biocompatibility, and hydrophobicity. The introduction of Ce-MOF also contributed to the film's reduced water solubility. Considering these outcomes, the developed cassava/Ce-MOF films undoubtedly have significant potential for active food packaging applications.

Abstract
Increasing demand for high-quality fresh fruits and vegetables has led to the development of innovative active packaging materials that exhibit controlled release of antimicrobial/antioxidant agents. In this study, composite biopolymer films consisting of methylcellulose (MC) and chitosan nanofibers (ChNF) were fabricated, which contained lactoferrin (LAC)-loaded silver-metal organic framework (Ag-MOF) nanoparticles. The results indicated that the nanoparticles were uniformly distributed throughout the biopolymer films, which led to improvements in tensile strength (56.1 ± 3.2 MPa), thermal stability, water solubility, swelling index, water vapor barrier properties (from 2.2 ± 2.1 to 1.9 ± 1.9 × 10-11 g. m/m2. s. Pa), and UV-shielding effects. The Ag-MOF-LAC2% films also exhibited strong and long-lasting antibacterial activity against E. coli (19.8 ± 5.2 mm) and S. aureus (20.1 ± 3.2 mm), which was attributed to the slow release of antimicrobial LAC from the films. The composite films were shown to maintain the fresh appearance of apples for at least seven days, which was attributed to their antimicrobial and antioxidant activities. Consequently, these composite films have the potential in the assembly of innovative active packaging materials for protecting fresh fruits and vegetables. However, further work is required to ensure their safety and economic viability.

Abstract
In this study, zein-gallic acid covalent complex prepared by alkali treatment was utilized as an emulsifier to stabilize cinnamon essential oil (CEO) Pickering emulsion, and the chitosan-based (CZGE) films loaded with CEO Pickering emulsion were prepared by blending. The influences of different contents of CEO Pickering emulsion on the physical properties and biological activities of CZGE films were investigated. The results showed that Pickering emulsion had good compatibility with chitosan matrix and enhanced the interaction between film-forming matrix polymer. In addition, incorporating with CEO Pickering emulsion (15 %, v/v) significantly improved the mechanical and barrier properties of the films, and also enhanced the light transmittance and thermal stability of the films. Furthermore, the loading of emulsion also improved the antioxidant activities of the films and led to the formation of high antimicrobial property against food pathogens, and the slow-release behavior of CEO could effectively extend the biological activity of the films. These results suggested that Pickering emulsion has potential as a loading system and a plasticizer in active packaging, and the feasibility of CZGE film in food packaging.

Abstract
Chitosan-based aerogels were fabricated through utilizing of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC)/CaCO3 composites. Chitosan aerogel and extra three aerogels loaded different concentrations of NFC/CaCO3 were investigated to explore their release efficiency of Tebuconazole pesticides. Results obtained from ATR-FTIR showed a remarkable decline of the characterized chitosan hydroxyl group peak prolonging with appearance of new peaks assigned to the inclusion of inorganic calcium element. Also, SEM images showed chitosan aerogel with regular porous structure increased by incorporation with of NFC/CaCO3 nanocomposite, while EDS affirmed the presence of calcium element rather pristine chitosan aerogel. In addition to this, the physical characterizations showed significant improvement in swelling properties for aerogels incorporated NFC/CaCO3 nanocomposite at low ratios. Chitosan aerogel reinforced NFC/CaCO3 nanocomposite exhibited benefit on loading and release efficiency of Tebuconazole. All samples showed accessibility to column release method with fastest release at low slow rate 2 mL/min as giving chance for diffusion and solubility of ingredient, while release increase as heat increase as result of pore expansion. In conclusion, chitosan aerogels incorporated calcium carbonate showed better-sustained release of Tebuconazole pesticides than pristine chitosan aerogel. The produced aerogels loaded NFC/CaCO3 nanocomposite could be promising for controlled release of pesticides at water-streams in agriculture sector.

Abstract
In this study, antimicrobial biocomposite films based on gelatin-κ-carrageenan (Gκ) with 1, 2 and 4 % lactoferrin (L) loaded chromium-based metal-organic frameworks (L@Cr-MOFs) nanoparticles were synthesized by casting methods. The addition of L loaded Cr-MOFs into Gκ based films increased elongation at break from 2.19 to 14.92 % and decreased the tensile strength from 65.1 to 31.22 MPa. L@Cr-MOFs addition reduced swelling index (from 105 to 70.8 %), water solubility (from 61.3 to 34.63 %) and water vapor permeability (from 2.46 to 2.19 × 10-11 g. m/m2. s). When the additional amount was 4 wt%, the Gκ/L@Cr-MOFs films showed antibacterial effects against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus with the inhibition zone of 19.7 mm and 20.2 mm, respectively. In addition, strawberries preservation trial shown that the Gκ/L@Cr-MOFs films delayed the growth of spoilage molds on the surface of fruits. This research indicated that Gκ/L@Cr-MOFs are promising active packaging materials for the preservation of perishable fruits.

Abstract
Innovative active and pH-colorimetric composite films were fabricated from gelatin/poly(vinyl alcohol) (Gel/PVA) integrated with copper-based metal-organic frameworks (Cu-MOFs) and red cabbage anthocyanin (RCA). The incorporation of Cu-MOFs improved the tensile strength, water resistance, and UV shielding properties of the developed composite films. The addition of anthocyanins and 3 wt% Cu-MOFs endowed the polymer matrix with excellent antioxidant (100 % against ABTS and DPPH radicals) and antibacterial (against Gram-positive and Gram-negative foodborne pathogenic bacteria) functions. The fabricated composite films exhibited significant color change at alkaline conditions of pH 7-12 and a marked color change upon exposure to ammonia. The designed indicator films used for shrimp freshness tracking and a visual color change from pink (for fresh shrimp) to green (for spoiled shrimp) was observed during storage at 28 °C for 24 h. The potential applications of the engineered composite films were studied by shrimp packaging, and the quality parameters of packaged samples were monitored during storage. The synergistic effects of adding anthocyanins and MOF nanostructures works for better product freshness preservation and responds well to shrimp spoilage level, introducing novel active and intelligent packaging options for practical smart packaging applications.

Abstract
Chitosan is a bio-renewable natural polymeric material. The antibacterial and antioxidant activity of chitosan can be enhanced by grafting with phenolic acids to further expand its application in food. Therefore, this paper focuses on reviewing the structure, antimicrobial and antioxidant activities and their mechanisms with phenolic acid-g-CS, evaluating its cytotoxicity, and describing its application in various food preservation. In general, different reaction mechanisms of phenolic acid-g-CS synthesis lead to different product structures. Compared to chitosan, phenolic acid-g-chitosan exhibited enhanced antibacterial and antioxidant activities. The toxicity assessment showed that phenolic acid-g-CS is not cytotoxic. Moreover, phenolic acid-g-CS has been applied to a variety of food products such as fruits, vegetables and meat with good results. Overall, this review provides a certain reference for subsequent researchers to design phenolic acid-g-CS more rationally and for the subsequent development of phenolic acid-g-CS in food preservation.

Abstract
It is crucial to detect toxic chromium ions quickly, reliably, sensitively and at low concentrations. In recent years, fluorescence-based methods have been developed for the rapid detection and determination of toxic ions such as chromium. In present work, we focused on the development of a cellulose-based fluorescent probe (Cel-Nap) for the determination of Cr(VI). The fluorescent probe bearing the 1,8-naphthalimide group displayed a low LOD of 1.07 μM for Cr(VI) in the working range of 0.33 × 10-5-3.22 × 10-5 M. The fluorescence and antibacterial properties of UiO-66-Cel-Nap and ZIF-8-Cel-Nap materials prepared by encapsulating Cel-Nap with 2 different MOF types (UiO-66 and ZIF-8) were investigated. While it was found that ZIF-8-based materials had better antimicrobial properties compared to those of UiO-66, it was determined that materials containing Ag+ were more effective against microbial than those containing AgNPs. It was found that the most effective material was ZIF-8-Cel-Nap-Ag+ and it had a significant antibacterial effect against E. coli at a MIC value of 0.0024 mg/mL.

Abstract
The dressings are materials that can improve the wound-healing process in patients with medical issues. Polymeric films are frequently used as dressings with multiple biological properties. Chitosan and gelatin are the most used polymers in tissue regeneration processes. There are usually several configurations of films for dressings, among which the composite (mixture of two or more materials) and layered ones stand out (layers). This study analyzed the antibacterial, degradable, and biocompatible properties of chitosan and gelatin films in 2 configurations, composite and bilayer, composite. In addition, a silver coating was added to enhance the antibacterial properties of both configurations. After the study, it was found that the bilayer films have a higher antibacterial activity than the composite films, having inhibition halos between 23% and 78% in Gram-negative bacteria. In addition, the bilayer films increased the fibroblast cell proliferation process, reaching up to 192% cell viability after 48 h of incubation. On the other hand, composite films have greater stability since they are thicker, with 276 µm, 243.8 µm, and 239 µm compared to 236 µm, 233 µm, and 219 µm thick for bilayer films; and a low degradation rate compared to bilayer films.

Abstract
The influence of metal ions, the state of metal salt, and ligands on the sterilization ability of (Metalorganic frameworks) MOFs to effectively achieve sterilization has been investigated in this study. Initially, the MOFs were synthesized by elements of Zn, Ag, and Cd for the same periodic and main group of Cu. This illustrated that the atomic structure of Cu was more beneficial for coordinating with ligands. To further induce the maximum amount of Cu2+ ions in the Cu-MOFs to achieve the highest sterilization, various Cu-MOFs synthesized by the different valences of Cu, various states of copper salts, and organic ligands were performed, respectively. The results demonstrated that Cu-MOFs synthesized by 3, 5-dimethyl-1, 2, 4-triazole and tetrakis (acetonitrile) copper(I) tetrafluoroborate presented the largest inhibition-zone diameter of 40.17 mm towards Staphylococcus Aureus (S. aureus) under dark conditions. The proposed mechanism of Cu (Ⅱ) in MOFs could significantly cause multiple toxic effects, such as the generation of reactive oxygen species, and lipid peroxidation in S. aureus cells, when the bacteria was anchored by the Cu-MOFs via electrostatic interaction. Finally, the broad antimicrobial properties of Cu-MOFs against Escherichia coli (E. coli), Acinetobacter baumannii (A. baumannii), and S. aureus were demonstrated. In conclusion, the Cu-3, 5-dimethyl-1, 2, 4-triazole MOFs appeared to be potential antibacterial catalysts in the antimicrobial field.

Abstract
Research on bionanocomposites has been developed, while its application as food packaging is still being explored. They are usually made from natural polymers such as cellulose acetate, chitosan (CS), and polyvinyl alcohol. Bionanocomposite materials can replace traditional non-biodegradable plastic packaging materials, enabling them to use new, high-performance, lightweight, and environmentally friendly composite materials. However, this natural polymer has a weakness in mechanical properties. Therefore, a composite system is needed that will improve the properties of the biodegradable food packaging. The aim of this mini-review is to demonstrate recent progress in the synthesis, modification, characterization, and application of bionanocomposites reported by previous researchers. The focus is on the preparation and characterization of CS-based bionanocomposites. The mechanical properties of CS-based food packaging can be improved by adding reinforcement from inorganic materials such as organoclay. Meanwhile, the anti-bacterial properties of CS-based food packaging can be improved by adding nanoparticles such as Ag and ZnO.

Abstract
p-Coumaric acid and caffeic acid were grafted onto chitosan through a non-radical synthesis method to improve the properties of chitosan and expand its application in food industry. Structural characterization demonstrated that the -COOH of the two phenolic acids were bonded to the -NH2 of the chitosan and formed an acylamino. The grafting ratios of p-coumaric acid-modified chitosan (Cm-CTS) and caffeic acid-modified chitosan (Cf-CTS) reached 10.30 % and 9.78 %, respectively. After modification, the water solubility of the chitosan greatly improved from 9.33 % (native chitosan, Nt-CTS) to 77.33 % (Cm-CTS) and 100 % (Cf-CTS). Besides, the involvement of phenolic acid and caffeic acid endowed the chitosan with strengthened antioxidation and antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. Nt-CTS and the modified chitosans were coated on the pork surface. The results indicated that Nt-CTS effectively inhibited pork spoilage and the modified chitosans could further prolong the shelf life of pork.

Abstract
Raspberry anthocyanin (RA) from Rubus idaeus L. (Rosaceae) and curcumin (Cur) from Curcuma longa L. (Zingiberaceae) can effectively improve the physicochemical properties of composite films, and as bioactive pigment components, they can impart pH-responsive properties to the film. In this study, RA and Cur were added to chitosan/starch/gelatin composite film (CSG) to prepare CSG-RA, CSG-Cur, CSG-RA/Cur82 and CSG-RA/Cur73 color films by solution casting method. The color films could change color under different pH conditions and had higher antioxidant activities using ABTS (2,2'-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) assay. The results from fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy showed that RA and Cur were well dispersed in the CSG matrix and improved the structure of the composite films. The hydrophobic Cur increased the tensile strength from 6 Mpa (CSG) to 14 Mpa (CSG-Cur), but reduced the elongation at break from 55 % (CSG) to 40 % (CSG-Cur). These color films had a good fresh-keeping effect and freshness monitoring, in particular, CSG-RA/Cur73, had the better opacity, water solubility, thickness, moisture content and water vapor permeability than the other films. Briefly, binary pigment films had the potential to become a pH-sensitive indicator/packing film.

Abstract
New developments require innovative ecofriendly materials defined by their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and versatility. For that reason, the scientific society is focused on biopolymers such as chitosan, which is the second most abundant in the world after cellulose. These new materials should show good properties in terms of sustainability, circularity, and energy consumption during industrial applications. The idea is to replace traditional raw materials with new ecofriendly materials which contribute to keeping a high production rate but also reducing its environmental impact and the costs. The chitosan shows interesting and unique properties, thus it can be used for different purposes which contributes to the design and development of sustainable novel materials. This helps in promoting sustainability through the use of chitosan and diverse materials based on it. For example, it is a good sustainable alternative for food packaging or it can be used for sustainable agriculture. The chitosan can also reduce the pollution of other industrial processes such as paper production. This mini review collects some of the most important advances for the sustainable use of chitosan for promoting circular economy. Hence, the present review focuses on different aspects of chitosan from its synthesis to multiple applications.
