Tailoring Cu substituted hydroxyapatite/functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotube composite coating on 316L SS implant for enhanced corrosion resistance, antibacterial and bioactive properties

Durable multifunctional cotton fabric with superior biocidal efficacy and flame retardancy based on an ammonium phosphate N-halamine

Multifunctional textiles have become the mainstreams along with development of textile industry and the increased need of public. But a facile fabrication method with well-balance of multiple functions is still a challenge. In this work, an ammonium salt of tris(methylphosphonate)aminomethane (TAMPU), which can directly react with cellulose molecules and transform to N-halamine antibacterial structure, was easily synthesized and used to achieve multifunctional cotton fabric. As a result, the modified cotton fabric of 15.8 % weight gain exhibited excellent fire resistance with LOI value of 33.8 % and self-extinguishing behavior. Due to the good char-forming capacity of TAMPU, strong heat suppression was achieved and the peak of heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) were decreased by 87.6 % and 60.8 %, respectively. Besides, the modified samples presented outstanding bactericidal effects, and all of S. aureus and E. coli could be inactivated within 5 min without dissolution phenomenon. Furthermore, the TAMPU-modified cotton fabric owned good washing durability and LOI value was remained at 29.8 % after 50 washing cycles. This TAMPU multifunctional modification had slight influence on the mechanical property and air permeability of cotton fabric. Thus, this work provides a convenient and friendly way to fabricate multifunctional flame-retardant and antibacterial cotton fabric.

Biofunctionalization with Cissus quadrangularis Phytobioactives Accentuates Nano-Hydroxyapatite Based Ceramic Nano-Cement for Neo-Bone Formation in Critical Sized Bone Defect

Developing biofunctionalized ceramic bone substitutes with phytobioactives for their sustained delivery is highly desired to enhance the osteo-active potential of ceramic bone substitutes, reduce the systemic toxicity of synthetic drugs, and increase the bioavailability of phytobioactives. The present work highlights the local delivery of phytobioactives of Cissus quadrangularis (CQ) through nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAP) based ceramic nano-cement. The phytoconstituent profiling represented the optimized CQ fraction to be rich in osteogenic polyphenols and flavonoids like quercetin, resveratrol, and their glucosides. Further, CQ phytobioactives-based formulation was biocompatible, increased bone formation, calcium deposition, proliferation, and migration of cells with simultaneous alleviation of cellular oxidative stress. In the in vivo critical-sized bone defect model, enhanced formation of highly mineralized tissue (BV mm³) in CQ phytobioactives functionalized nano-cement (10.5 ± 2 mm³) were observed compared to the control group (6.5 ± 1.2 mm³). Moreover, the addition of CQ phytobioactives to the bone nano-cement increased the fractional bone volume (BV/TV%) to 21 ± 4.2% compared to 13.1 ± 2.5% in non-functionalized nano-cement. The results demonstrated nHAP-based nano-cement as a carrier for phytobioactives which could be a promising approach for neo-bone formation in different bone defect conditions.

Ion-Doped Calcium Phosphate-Based Coatings with Antibacterial Properties

Ion-substituted calcium phosphate (CP) coatings have been extensively studied as promising materials for biomedical implants due to their ability to enhance biocompatibility, osteoconductivity, and bone formation. This systematic review aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the current state of the art in ion-doped CP-based coatings for orthopaedic and dental implant applications. Specifically, this review evaluates the effects of ion addition on the physicochemical, mechanical, and biological properties of CP coatings. The review also identifies the contribution and additional effects (in a separate or a synergistic way) of different components used together with ion-doped CP for advanced composite coatings. In the final part, the effects of antibacterial coatings on specific bacteria strains are reported. The present review could be of interest to researchers, clinicians, and industry professionals involved in the development and application of CP coatings for orthopaedic and dental implants.

Antioxidant Activity of Gracilaria lemaneiformis Polysaccharide Degradation Based on Nrf-2/Keap-1 Signaling Pathway in HepG2 Cells with Oxidative Stress Induced by H2O2

The objective of this research was to investigate the antioxidant activity of Gracilarialemaneiformis polysaccharide degradation and its underlying mechanism involved in the Nrf-2/Keap-1 signaling pathway in HepG2 cells with oxidative stress induced by H2O2. The result of the scavenging ability of free radicals showed that GLP-HV (polysaccharide degraded by H2O2–vitamin C (Vc)) performed a better scavenging ability than GLP (G.lemaneiformis polysaccharide). Moreover, the scavenging ability of polysaccharide to these free radicals from strong to weak was as follows: superoxide radical, ferric ion, ABTS+, and DPPH radical, and their IC50 values were 3.56 ± 0.0028, 4.97 ± 0.18, 9.62 ± 0.35, and 23.85 ± 1.78 mg/mL, respectively. Furthermore, GLP-HV obviously relieved oxidative stress in HepG2 cells, which strengthened the activity of T-AOC, CAT, GSH-PX, and SOD, and diminished the intensity of MDA, intracellular ROS, and calcium ion based on the Nrf-2/Keap-1 signaling pathway. The PCR result revealed that polysaccharide upregulated the expression of the genes Nrf-2, HO-1, NQO-1, and ZO-1 and downregulated Keap-1. The correlation between chemical properties and antioxidant mechanism of GLP-HV was evaluated via a heat map. The results illustrated that reducing sugar and active groups presented a positive correlation, and molecular weight and viscosity exhibited a negative relation with antioxidant activity.

Morphological Changes, Antibacterial Activity, and Cytotoxicity Characterization of Hydrothermally Synthesized Metal Ions-Incorporated Nanoapatites for Biomedical Application

The objective of this study was to prepare hydroxyapatite (HA) with potential antibacterial activity against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria by incorporating different atomic ratios of Cu²⁺ (0.1–1.0%), Mg²⁺ (1.0–7.0%), and Zn²⁺ (1.0–7.0%) to theoretically replace Ca²⁺ ions during the hydrothermal synthesis of grown precipitated HA nanorods. This study highlights the role of comparing different metal ions on synthetic nanoapatite in regulating the antibacterial properties and toxicity. The comparisons between infrared spectra and between diffractograms have confirmed that metal ions do not affect the formation of HA phases. The results show that after doped Cu²⁺, Mg²⁺, and Zn²⁺ ions replace Ca²⁺, the ionic radius is almost the same, but significantly smaller than that of the original Ca²⁺ ions, and the substitution effect causes the lattice distance to change, resulting in crystal structure distortion and reducing crystallinity. The reduction in the length of the nanopatites after the incorporation of Cu²⁺, Mg²⁺, and Zn²⁺ ions confirmed that the metal ions were mainly substituted during the growth of the rod-shape nanoapatite Ca²⁺ distributed along the longitudinal site. The antibacterial results show that nanoapatite containing Cu²⁺ (0.1%), Mg²⁺ (3%), and Zn²⁺ (5–7%) has obvious and higher antibacterial activity against gram-positive bacteria Staphylococcus aureus within 2 days. The antibacterial effect against the gram-negative bacillus Escherichia coli is not as pronounced as against Staphylococcus aureus. The antibacterial effect of Cu²⁺ substituted Ca²⁺ with an atomic ratio of 0.1~1.0% is even better than that of Mg²⁺- and Zn²⁺- doped with 1~7% groups. In terms of cytotoxicity, nanoapatites with Cu²⁺ (~0.2%) exhibit cytotoxicity, whereas Mg²⁺- (1–5%) and Zn²⁺- (~1%) doped nanoapatites are biocompatible at low concentrations but become cytotoxic as ionic concentration increases. The results show that the hydrothermally synthesized nanoapatite combined with Cu²⁺ (0.2%), Mg²⁺ (3%), and Zn²⁺ (3%) exhibits low toxicity and high antibacterial activity, which provides a good prospect for bypassing antibiotics for future biomedical applications.

Preparation of antibacterial Zn and Ni substituted cobalt ferrite nanoparticles for efficient biofilm eradication

Zinc (Zn) and, alternatively, nickel (Ni) substituted cobalt ferrite (CF) nanoparticles (NPs) were prepared by sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the formation of cubic structure of cobalt ferrite. FTIR analysis confirmed the vibrational band located at 550-580 cm^-1 that belongs to the M - O bond (M = Ni, and Zn). The alteration of the surface morphology of CF after the addition of Zn and Ni ions was observed from scanning electron microscopic images. The additional peaks in the energy dispersive X-ray diffraction (EDX) analysis spectra were found to correspond to Zn and Ni. The presence of Zn and, alternatively, Ni ions enhanced the biocidal properties of CF NPs against gram negative organisms, in a concentration and time-dependent manner. Furthermore, exposure to CF, CF-Zn and CF-Ni NPs decreased metabolic activity due to the damage of extra polymorphic substances, live/dead cell variation, architecture and surface integrity of the cells. Altogether, the present investigation provides the basis of metal ion substituted metal oxide NPs as anti-biofilm agents against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

Recent Advances on Development of Hydroxyapatite Coating on Biodegradable Magnesium Alloys: A Review

The wide application of magnesium alloys as biodegradable implant materials is limited because of their fast degradation rate. Hydroxyapatite (HA) coating can reduce the degradation rate of Mg alloys and improve the biological activity of Mg alloys, and has the ability of bone induction and bone conduction. The preparation of HA coating on the surface of degradable Mg alloys can improve the existing problems, to a certain extent. This paper reviewed different preparation methods of HA coatings on biodegradable Mg alloys, and their effects on magnesium alloys’ degradation, biocompatibility, and osteogenic properties. However, no coating prepared can meet the above requirements. There was a lack of systematic research on the degradation of coating samples in vivo, and the osteogenic performance. Therefore, future research can focus on combining existing coating preparation technology and complementary advantages to develop new coating preparation techniques, to obtain more balanced coatings. Second, further study on the metabolic mechanism of HA-coated Mg alloys in vivo can help to predict its degradation behavior, and finally achieve controllable degradation, and further promote the study of the osteogenic effect of HA-coated Mg alloys in vivo.

Potential of Carbon-Based Nanocomposites for Dental Tissue Engineering and Regeneration

While conventional dental implants focus on mechanical properties, recent advances in functional carbon nanomaterials (CNMs) accelerated the facilitation of functionalities including osteoinduction, osteoconduction, and osseointegration. The surface functionalization with CNMs in dental implants has emerged as a novel strategy for reinforcement and as a bioactive cue due to their potential for mechanical reinforcing, osseointegration, and antimicrobial properties. Numerous developments in the fabrication and biological studies of CNMs have provided various opportunities to expand their application to dental regeneration and restoration. In this review, we discuss the advances in novel dental implants with CNMs in terms of tissue engineering, including material combination, coating strategies, and biofunctionalities. We present a brief overview of recent findings and progression in the research to show the promising aspect of CNMs for dental implant application. In conclusion, it is shown that further development of surface functionalization with CNMs may provide innovative results with clinical potential for improved osseointegration after implantation.
