Abstract
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD), a condition characterized by an undertreated trajectory and frequently marked by a chronic course, is broadly acknowledged to be a critical public health issue worldwide. While substantial evidence is available showing the significant role of resilience in depression, the current understanding of mediating factors influencing this relationship in the early stages of MDD remains limited. To fill this gap in the literature, in the present study, we explored the effect of eating behaviors and basic psychological needs in a cohort of individuals newly diagnosed with MDD. The model was tested using a sample of a total of 328 Turkish individuals newly diagnosed with MDD (87% women, Mage = 31.51 ± 11.03 years). The following four psychometrically sound instruments were employed to collect data immediately following diagnosis: Brief Resilience Scale (BRS), Depression-Anxiety-Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21), Basic Psychological Needs Scale (BPNS), and Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire (TFEQ). After controlling demographic variables, the results confirmed that resilience is significantly negatively associated with depression. Uncontrolled eating behavior and autonomy, competence, and relatedness needs were found to be four mediators and partially mediated the relation of resilience with depression. The results also revealed that cognitive restriction and emotional eating behaviors did not significantly mediate this relationship. These findings suggest that early interventions targeting eating behaviors, such as promoting healthy eating patterns and addressing unmet psychological needs could strengthen resilience and reduce the risk of chronic depression in individuals newly diagnosed with MDD.

Abstract
Loneliness has long been recognized as a key predictor of depression in older adults, and both are related to sleep quality. However, to this day, less is known about whether sleep quality mediates their relationship. This study aimed to examine the relationship between loneliness, sleep quality, and depressive symptoms, and to further explore whether sleep quality mediates the relationship between loneliness and depressive symptoms. Using the random cluster sampling method, 1016 permanent residents aged 45 and above in Ankang City, Shaanxi Province were selected. The relationship between loneliness, sleep quality, and depressive symptoms was analyzed using binary logistic regression, and the mediating role of sleep quality between loneliness and depressive symptoms was analyzed using the PROCESS macro in SPSS 25.0 software. The average age of the participants in this study was 60.39 ± 8.50. Regression analyses showed that individuals with loneliness (OR 7.161, 95%CI: 4.889-10.490, P < 0.001) and those with poor sleep quality (OR 4.777, 95%CI: 3.301-6.913, P < 0.001) were more likely to experience depressive symptoms than individuals without loneliness and with good sleep quality. This study also found a significant mediating effect of sleep quality between loneliness and depressive symptoms [effect value = 0.066, bootstrap 95% CI: (0.037, 0.093)] with an effect size of 13.31%. Loneliness may lead to reduced sleep quality in individuals, which in turn may lead to or exacerbate depressive symptoms. Therefore, this study highlights the importance of assessing and improving sleep quality in lonely people.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE One of the common symptoms of mood disorders is insomnia, and the recovery processes can be negatively impacted by a lack of restorative sleep. Although factors related to restorative sleep in healthy subjects have been investigated, evaluations of these factors in patients with depression have been rarely done. Patients with depression are known to have sleep-wake state discrepancy, which can further influence their restorative sleep beyond that associated with depressive symptoms. Thus, we investigated restorative sleep in depressed patients in our current study, and attempted to identify associated factors, with a particular focus on sleep-wake state discrepancy. METHODS In the 91 participants evaluated in this cross-sectional study, all subjects filled out questionnaires on their symptoms prior to undergoing polysomnography (PSG). Sleep duration and restorative sleep were evaluated on the morning after the PSG. The association between restorative sleep and various factors was then examined using multiple regression analysis. RESULTS A negative association with restorative sleep was found through multiple regression analysis for depressive symptoms (β = -0.055, p = 0.007), daytime sleepiness (β = -0.106, p = 0.020), and overestimation of wake after sleep onset (β = -0.006, p = 0.030). CONCLUSIONS By subjectively and objectively assessing sleep, addressing depressive symptoms, and implementing appropriate sleep hygiene, clinicians could be able to improve restorative sleep in depressed patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the status of sleep disorders and their association with comprehensive frailty in the community-dwelling older adults. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. SETTING Six community healthcare centres in Xi'an City, Northwest China. PARTICIPANTS A total of 2647 community-dwelling older adults completed the study. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES The primary outcomes included frailty and sleep disorders, measured with the Comprehensive Frailty Assessment Instrument and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), respectively. The secondary outcomes were potential factors associated with frailty. RESULTS The participants averaged 5.23±2.94 in the total score of the PSQI, with a poor sleep quality prevalence of 19.9%. Individuals with poor sleep quality are more likely to have mild and high frailty, with an OR of 1.64 and 2.81, respectively. Both shortened (<5 hours) and prolonged (>8 hours) sleep duration are associated with higher level of frailty. Poor overall sleep, poor subjective sleep quality, extended sleep latency, sleep disturbances, use of sleeping medication and daytime dysfunction were associated with higher level of frailty (with a correlational coefficient of 0.237, 0.201, 0.223, 0.197, 0.087 and 0.378, respectively). CONCLUSION Sleep disorders are common problems among community-dwelling older adults, the severity of which rises with the increase in frailty level. Poor overall sleep quality, poor subjective sleep quality, extended sleep latency, sleep disturbances, daytime dysfunction and abnormal sleep duration are associated with frailty.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the rates of depressive symptoms in college students, explore the relationship between urinary phthalate metabolites and depressive symptoms and their gender differences, and further explore the moderating role of insomnia in this association. METHODS A total of 1 179 college students were recruited from 2 universities in Hefei and Shangrao cities from April to May 2019. The depressive symptoms and insomnia of college students were investigated by the Patient Health Questionnaire 9 and Insomnia Severity Index. The high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry was adapted to determine the concentration of urinary phthalate metabolites. The generalized linear model was used to analyze the relationship of phthalate metabolites with depressive symptoms. Moderating analysis was used to examine whether insomnia moderated the relationship of phthalate metabolites with depressive symptoms. RESULTS The rates of mild depression, and moderate depression and above in college students were 31.9% and 9.2%, respectively. The phthalate metabolites exhibited a median and mean concentration spanning from 2.98 ∼ 156.55 ng/mL and 6.12 ∼ 205.53 ng/mL. The generalized linear model results showed that monobutyl phthalate (MBP) (β = 1.160, 95%CI: 0.423 ∼ 1.896) and low molecular weight phthalate (LMWP) (β = 1.230, 95%CI: 0.348 ∼ 2.113) were positively correlated with depressive symptoms, and MBP (β = 1.320, 95%CI: 0.453 ∼ 2.187) and LMWP (β = 1.396, 95%CI: 0.351 ∼ 2.440) were positively correlated with depressive symptoms only in female college students after stratified by gender. Furthermore, insomnia has a positive moderating role between MBP, LMWP, and depressive symptoms and has a sex-based difference. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests that there is a positive association of phthalate metabolites with depressive symptoms among Chinese college students, as well as insomnia plays a positive moderating role in this association.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Interest in anti-seizure properties of cannabinoids is increasing, with the rise in prevalence of recreational and medical cannabis use, especially across Canada. In a recent study on people with epilepsy (PWE), cannabis use showed a strong association with poor psychosocial health. Sleep and mood comorbidities are highly prevalent in epilepsy, and are common motivations for cannabis use. The primary objective of this study was to assess demographic, subjective and objectively assessed sleep quality and mood related differences among PWE who regularly use cannabis compared to those who do not. METHODS Consecutive consenting patients with a confirmed epilepsy diagnosis, admitted to our Epilepsy Monitoring Unit, over a 3-year period (2019-2022) were enrolled. Detailed epilepsy-related data and self-reported sleep [Pittsburgh Sleep quality index (PSQI)], Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS)], mood [(Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI) and Beck's Anxiety inventory (BAI)] and cannabis use related data were collected. Overnight polysomnography (PSG) was conducted on the first night of admission, with simultaneous 18-channel video-EEG. Sleep (PSG) scoring followed American Academy of Sleep Medicine guidelines by a scorer blinded to clinical details. RESULTS Among 51 patients with similar seizure control, 25 (13 F) reported cannabis use (mean age 36.3+14.8 years) and were significantly younger than 26 (18 F) non-users (mean age 48.3+15 years). Cannabis users had significantly better subjective sleep quality (mean PSQI scores 7.2+2.9 vs 10.2+5.2 respectively). Most patients endorsed sleepiness (Cannabis users with ESS scores greater than 10; 91.3 %, 77.3 % in non-users) and moderate to extreme depression (BDI) scores. No significant differences were observed in objective sleep parameters. BDI score significantly predicted PSQI and ESS scores on multiple logistic regression analysis. SIGNIFICANCE Despite a significant age difference, self-reported sleep quality is better among PWE who report regular cannabis use compared to non-users. However, there is no significant difference in objective sleep quantity and quality from PSG between the two groups. Additionally, severity of depressive symptoms is a significant predictor of sleep quality and of excessive daytime sleepiness among PWE.

Abstract
Light exposure affects the circadian system and consequently can affect sleep quality. Only few studies examined this relationship in children. We evaluated associations between light exposure patterns and sleep metrics in children. We measured the sleep parameters of 247 Dutch children, aged between 11 and 13 years and recruited from the ABCD cohort, using actigraphy and sleep records for 7 consecutive nights. Personal light exposures were measured with a light meter during the whole day and night. We applied generalized mixed-effects regression models, adjusted for possible confounders, to evaluate the associations of light exposure patterns on sleep duration, sleep efficiency and sleep-onset delay. In the models mutually adjusted for potential confounders, we found the amount of hours between the first time of bright light in the morning and going to sleep and the duration of bright light to be significantly associated with decreased sleep duration (in min; β: -2.02 [95% confidence interval: -3.84, -0.25], β: -8.39 [95% confidence interval: -16.70, -0.07], respectively) and with shorter sleep-onset delay (odds ratio: 0.88 [95% confidence interval: 0.80, 0.97], odds ratio: 0.40 [95% confidence interval: 0.19, 0.87], respectively). Increased light intensities at night were associated with decreased sleep duration (T2 β: -8.54 [95% confidence interval: -16.88, -0.20], T3 β: -14.83 [95% confidence interval: -28.04, -1.62]), while increased light intensities before going to bed were associated with prolonged sleep onset (odds ratio: 4.02 [95% confidence interval: 2.09, 7.73]). These findings further suggest that children may be able to influence their sleep quality by influencing the light exposure patterns during day and night.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Genetic risks can accelerate ageing, yet better quality sleep may slow down it. We thus examined the interaction and combined effects of genetic predisposition and sleep quality on the risk of accelerate aging. METHODS This study included 407,027 participants from the UK Biobank. Sleep index of each participant was retrieved from the following seven sleep behaviors: snoring, chronotype, daytime sleepiness, sleep duration, insomnia, nap and difficulties in getting up. The biological age (PhenoAge) were estimated by corresponding algorithms based on clinical traits, and their residual discrepancies with chronological age were defined as the age accelerations (PhenoAgeaccel). We explored the interaction and combined effects of genetic risk and sleep quality on accelerated ageing by constructing a linear model. RESULTS Compared with participants in low sleep quality group, those in medium and high sleep quality group decreased 0.727 (95%CI, 0.653 to 0.801) and 1.056 (95%CI, 0.982 to 1.130) years of PhenoAgeaccel, respectively. Compared with participants in low genetic risk group, those in medium and high genetic risk group increased 0.833 (95%CI, 0.792 to 0.874) and 1.543 (95%CI, 1.494 to 1.592) years of PhenoAgeaccel, respectively. There was interaction between the genetic risk and sleep quality (P-interaction<0.001). For combined effect, compared to the group with high sleep quality and lower genetic risk, people with low sleep quality and high genetic risk had 2.747 (95%CI, 2.602 to 2.892) years higher PhenoAgeaccel. CONCLUSION Our findings elucidate that better sleep quality could lessen accelerated biological ageing especially among population with high genetic risk.

Abstract
Suicide among college students is a challenging problem globally. Yet, the association between sleep quality, depressive symptoms, and suicidal ideation remains unclear. This study aims to understand if depressive symptoms mediate the relationship between sleep quality and suicide ideation and whether the interaction between depressive symptoms and sleep quality on suicidal ideation is additive. A total of 1182 college students were recruited, and sleep quality, depressive symptoms, and suicidal ideation were assessed using questionnaires. Univariate analysis, logistic regression analysis, linear regression models, and the Sobel test were performed. The results showed that, among college students, poor sleep quality was positively associated with suicidal ideation, and the association was mediated through depressive symptoms. Moreover, there was a significant additive interaction between poor sleep quality and depressive symptoms on suicidal ideation. These findings suggest that, in the process of preventing and treating suicidal ideation in college students with sleep disorders, we should focus on the evaluation and intervention of depressive symptoms and adopt multidisciplinary team interventions for college students with sleep disorders and depression.

Abstract
Background: High intake of fast food has been linked to increased risks of both depressive and anxiety disorders. However, associations between individual fast-food items and depressive/anxiety disorders are rarely examined. Method: Using cross-sectional survey the association between common fast-food items and depressive/anxiety symptoms among 142 young Hong Kong adults aged 18-27 years old was examined. A qualitative food frequency questionnaire was employed to measure the intake frequency of 22 common fast-food items found in Hong Kong. Occurrence of significant depressive and anxiety symptoms was measured by the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), respectively. Primary measures were multivariate-adjusted odds ratios for occurrence of depressive and anxiety symptoms compared with the low intake frequency group for common fast-food items. Results: Our observations suggest that frequent intake of high-fat, -sugar, and -sodium fast-foods increased depressive symptoms, while frequent high-fat fast-food intake was associated with anxiety symptoms. However, frequent intake of sugar-free beverages reduced the risk of depressive symptoms. Conclusions: Habitual intake of certain fast foods were related to depressive/anxiety symptoms in young adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To understand the current status of occupational stress, occupational burn-out and sleep quality among ambulance drivers in Hengyang, China and to analyse the relationship between occupational stress, occupational burn-out and sleep quality of ambulance drivers. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. SETTING Prehospital emergency centre of third-class hospital in Hengyang, China. PARTICIPANTS From October 2023 to December 2023, a cross-sectional survey was conducted, with 213 ambulance drivers from Hengyang, China, selected as participants. METHODS General demographic questionnaires, the Chinese Occupational Stress Inventory, the Maslach Burnout Inventory and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index were used for data collection and analysis. RESULTS Occupational stress among ambulance drivers was positively correlated with occupational burn-out and sleep quality (r=0.528, 0.447, both p<0.01) while occupational burn-out was positively correlated with sleep quality (r=0.394, p<0.01). Occupational burn-out partially mediated the relationship between occupational stress and sleep quality among ambulance drivers, with a mediation effect value of 0.168, accounting for 26.09% of the total effect. CONCLUSION The sleep quality of ambulance drivers in Hengyang, China is suboptimal, with occupational stress directly predicting sleep quality. Occupational burn-out plays a partial positive mediating role between occupational stress and sleep quality among ambulance drivers. Reducing occupational stress and burn-out is beneficial for improving the sleep quality of ambulance drivers.

Abstract
Motor performance (MP) is essential for functional independence and well-being, particularly in later life. However, the relationship between behavioural aspects such as sleep quality and depressive symptoms, which contribute to MP, and the underlying structural brain substrates of their interplay remains unclear. This study used three population-based cohorts of younger and older adults (n=1,950) from the Human Connectome Project-Young Adult (HCP-YA), HCP-Aging (HCP-A), and enhanced Nathan Kline Institute-Rockland sample (eNKI-RS). Several canonical correlation analyses were computed within a machine learning framework to assess the associations between each of the three domains (sleep quality, depressive symptoms, grey matter volume (GMV)) and MP. The HCP-YA analyses showed progressively stronger associations between MP and each domain: depressive symptoms (unexpectedly positive, r=0.13, SD=0.06), sleep quality (r=0.17, SD=0.05), and GMV (r=0.19, SD=0.06). Combining sleep and depressive symptoms significantly improved the canonical correlations (r=0.25, SD=0.05), while the addition of GMV exhibited no further increase (r=0.23, SD=0.06). In young adults, better sleep quality, mild depressive symptoms, and GMV of several brain regions were associated with better MP. This was conceptually replicated in young adults from the eNKI-RS cohort. In HCP-Aging, better sleep quality, fewer depressive symptoms, and increased GMV were associated with MP. Robust multivariate associations were observed between sleep quality, depressive symptoms and GMV with MP, as well as age-related variations in these factors. Future studies should further explore these associations and consider interventions targeting sleep and mental health to test the potential effects on MP across the lifespan.

Abstract
Background Research has established the link between physical health, stress and cognition, and social connection with depression and anxiety. Nevertheless, an understanding of the comorbidity of depression and anxiety symptoms and their complex interrelationships with relevant factors remains still limited. This study investigated the complex pattern of interplay between depression and anxiety symptoms and pertinent physical, cognitive, and social factors and potential gender differences. Methods Using a sample of 600 middle-aged men and women, depression and anxiety as well as physical health, perceived stress and mastery, and social connection were assessed. The network structure of depression and anxiety symptoms and risk and resilience factors were characterized by examining interrelationships and the centrality indices of Strength and Bridge Strength. Gender differences were examined using the Network Comparison Test. Results Perceived stress and mastery were central bridge factors influencing comorbid depression and anxiety symptoms, and perceived stress, anhedonia, and mastery exhibited strong inter-connections to each other. The connections of physical health-anhedonia and sleep disturbance-irritability were stronger in men than in women, while social connection with family was linked to interpersonal problems only in women. Conclusions The results underscore that prevention and interventions targeting reducing perceptions of stress and promoting mastery would prevent onset or recurrence of depression and anxiety symptoms among middle-aged men and women. Engaging in behavioral activities to maintain physical health and ensuring adequate sleep could be particularly beneficial for men in reducing overall symptom severity.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Concussion symptoms following a traumatic accident are both common and known to adversely affect mental health and recovery in patients with traumatic brain injury. Depression, highly prevalent among patients with traumatic brain injury, is also associated with the important factors of sleep quality and resilience. However, the mediator and moderator roles of depression following concussion in patients with traumatic brain injury have been underexplored. The aims of this study were to investigate the mediating role of sleep quality in the relation between concussion symptoms and depression and to examine the moderating effect of resilience on this mediated model. DESIGN Cross-sectional pretest data analysis of a randomized controlled trial. METHODS A total of 249 adult patients with mild traumatic brain injury (Glasgow Coma Scale 13-15) at admission following brain injury were surveyed at a medical center in Taipei, Taiwan. The outcome variables were concussion symptoms (Rivermead Post-Concussion Symptom Questionnaire), sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index), resilience (Resilience Scale for Adults), and depression (Beck Depression Inventory II). These data were analyzed using moderated mediation regressions with the SPSS PROCESS macro. RESULTS In patients with mild traumatic brain injury, there was a significant positive relation between concussion symptoms and depression, of which sleep quality was a significant mediator. Additionally, resilience had a negative moderating effect on the relations between sleep quality and depression. Patients with less resilience showed a stronger negative effect of sleep quality on depression. CONCLUSION Our findings suggest that ameliorating both concussion symptoms and sleep disturbance is important for reducing the risk of depression in patients with mild traumatic brain injury, especially in those patients with less resilience. CLINICAL RELEVANCE It is essential for clinical nurses to develop interventions for patients with mild traumatic brain injury that will improve their sleep quality, while strengthening their resilience, to alleviate depression.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Mitochondria contribute to various compromised health, yet the association between sleep and mitochondria remains unclear. This study investigated the association between sleep quality and mitochondrial function in healthy middle-aged adults in the Republic of Korea. METHOD This cross-sectional study recruited 238 middle-aged adults using convenience sampling. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Mitochondrial function, represented by mitochondrial DNA copy number (mtDNAcn), was measured using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction on peripheral blood leukocytes. Multivariate linear regression analyses were performed to determine the association between sleep quality and mtDNAcn. RESULTS Sleep quality was negatively associated with mtDNAcn (r = -.15, p = .025); the poor sleep quality group had a notably lower mtDNAcn compared to the good sleep quality group (t = 2.40, p = .017). Among the PSQI components, sleep latency was significantly associated with reduced mtDNAcn (r = -.18, p = .005). Univariate regression analysis revealed that mtDNAcn was significantly associated with education level (β = 0.15, p = .017), shift work (β = -0.17, p = .010), global PSQI score (β = -0.15, p = .025), and sleep latency (β = -0.18, p = .005). After adjusting for educational level and shift work in the final model, longer sleep latency was independently associated with reduced mtDNAcn (β = -.16, p = .011). CONCLUSIONS Poor sleep quality is associated with reduced mtDNAcn, suggesting a potential biological mechanism whereby poor sleep quality, specifically long sleep latency, accelerates cellular aging and impairs health through mitochondrial dysfunction. These findings enhance our understanding of the health effects of sleep quality and highlight the importance of screening and intervention strategies for mitochondrial dysfunction.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies have extensively examined the factors contributing to the onset of occupational stress, burnout, and depression. However, the relationship between these variables is limited. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to explore the association between occupational stress, burnout, and depressive symptoms and to investigate the mediating effect of burnout between occupational stress and depressive symptoms in medical staff. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted among medical staff in Chongqing, China. The Core Occupational Stress Scale (COSS), Maslach Burnout Inventory: General Survey (MBI-GS), and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) were used to assess the status of occupational stress, burnout, and depressive symptoms, respectively. The bootstrapping analyses using SPSS PROCESS macros version 3 were conducted to examine mediating effects. RESULTS The study conducted on medical staff in Chongqing revealed that the detection rates of occupational stress, occupational burnout, and depressive symptoms were 31.8%, 23.3%, and 30.3%, respectively. Hierarchical regression analysis revealed that occupational stress and burnout accounted for 19.3% (p < 0.001) and 18.8% (p < 0.001) of the variance in depressive symptoms, respectively. Mediation analysis showed that occupational stress indirectly affected depressive symptoms through the mediating effect of occupational burnout, with a mediation effect value of 0.13 (bootstrap 95% CI: 0.116-0.144) and the mediation effect accounting for 44.8% of the total effect. CONCLUSION Our results indicated that occupational stress and burnout were predictors of depressive symptoms. Occupational stress had a significant indirect effect on depressive symptoms via burnout. These results suggest that reducing occupational stress and burnout could be effective strategies for preventing depression among medical staff.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To describe the prevalence of chronotype and sleep quality among Chinese college students and explore the relationship between chronotype and sleep quality. DESIGN A cross-sectional study. SETTING Four colleges and universities in Anhui, China, between November and December 2020. PARTICIPANTS A total of 4768 college students were recruited using a stratified, multistage, cluster sampling survey. OUTCOME MEASURES Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire 19 was used to determine the chronotype of the students and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to measure their sleep quality. The multiple logistic regression model was used to explore the potential association between chronotype and sleep quality. RESULTS The self-reported proportions of evening-type (E-type), neutral-type and morning-type among college students were 51.17%, 45.14% and 3.69%, respectively. The mean PSQI score was 4.97±2.82 and the prevalence of poor sleep quality was 18.2%. After adjusting the covariates by multiple logistic regression analysis, E-type was positively associated with subjective sleep quality (OR=1.671, 95% CI 1.414 to 1.975), sleep latency (OR=1.436, 95% CI 1.252 to 1.647), sleep duration (OR=2.149, 95% CI 1.506 to 3.067), habitual sleep efficiency (OR=1.702, 95% CI 1.329 to 2.180), daytime dysfunction (OR=1.602, 95% CI 1.412 to 1.818) and overall poor sleep quality (OR=1.866, 95% CI 1.586 to 2.196). CONCLUSIONS College students mainly exhibited E-type, and an elevated prevalence of poor sleep quality existed among these students. The E-type was positively associated with poor sleep quality.

Abstract
Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic has caused sudden changes to daily lives, such as self-isolation and social distancing, and has negatively affected sleep quality and patterns. The resulting psychological discomfort has caused many Korean women to experience depressive moods. Vigorous physical activity is considered effective in improving sleep quality and alleviating depressive symptoms. As a form of vigorous physical activity, soccer could be used to improve women's mental health. This study aimed to ascertain the effects of playing soccer on sleep quality and depressive symptoms in women. Methods Non-face-to-face questionnaires were administered using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index to measure sleep quality and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 to measure depressive symptoms, targeting 200 of 297 soccer-playing Korean women aged 20-50 years, from October 13, 2022, to January 15, 2023. A total of 172 questionnaires administered to soccer participants were used, while 28 with insincere and double or no-responses were excluded. Additionally, 124 samples of non-exercise participants were collected, with the help of "EMBRAIN," a Korean research and survey company. This study analyzed differences in sleep quality and depressive symptoms, and correlations and multiple regression analysis were performed. Results The soccer group was shown to have a high quality of sleep. In relation to the effect of sleep quality on depressive symptoms, subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep disturbance, use of sleeping pills, and daytime functional disorder had a significant effect. In the relation to the effect of sleep quality on depressive symptoms, significant effect was found in subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep disturbance, and daytime functional disorder of soccer participants, and non-exercise participants displayed significant effect in subjective sleep quality, sleep disturbance, and the use of sleeping pills. Discussion This study examined the effect of soccer participation on sleep quality and depressive symptoms among women. Soccer, which requires high activity and teamwork levels, improves sociability in women by enhancing their sense of belonging, self-confidence, and team spirit.

Abstract
N-acetylserotonin O-methyltransferase (ASMT) is responsible for melatonin biosynthesis. The Asmt gene is located on the X chromosome, and its genetic polymorphism is associated with depression in humans. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. Here, we use CRISPR/Cas9 to delete 20 bp of exon 2 of Asmt, and construct C57BL/6J mouse strain with Asmt frameshift mutation (Asmtft/ft). We show that female Asmtft/ft mice exhibit anxiety- and depression-like behaviors, accompanied by an obvious structural remodeling of gut microbiota. These behavioral abnormalities are not observed in male. Moreover, female Asmtft/ft mice show a lower neurobehavioral adaptability to exercise, while wild-type shows a "higher resilience". Cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis indicates that the structure of gut microbiota in Asmtft/ft mice is less affected by exercise. These results suggests that Asmt maintains the plasticity of gut microbiota in female, thereby enhancing the neurobehavioral adaptability to exercise.

Abstract
Sleep deprivation has become a common health hazard, affecting 37-58% of the population and promoting the occurrence and development of many diseases. To date, effective treatment strategies are still elusive. Accumulating evidence indicates that modulating the intestinal microbiota harbors significant potential for alleviating the deleterious impacts of sleep deprivation. This paper first reviews the effects of sleep deprivation on gastrointestinal diseases, metabolic diseases, and neuropsychiatric diseases, discussing its specific mechanisms of influence. We then focus on summarizing existing interventions, including probiotics, melatonin, prebiotics, diet, and fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT). Finally, we have discussed the advantages and limitations of each strategy. Compared with other strategies, probiotics showed a high potential in alleviating sleep deprivation-related hazards due to their reduced risk and high security. We suggest that future research should focus on the specific mechanisms by which probiotics mitigate the harms of sleep deprivation, such insights may unveil novel pathways for treating diseases exacerbated by insufficient sleep.

Abstract
Purpose Poor sleep and depressive symptoms are two negative effects of night shift work on physical and mental health. This study evaluated the correlation between sleep quality and depression symptoms among nurses in Saudi Arabia. Specifically, we assessed depressive symptoms and sleep quality observed among nurses who worked night shifts and compared the outcomes with those who worked exclusively day shifts in hospital settings. Patients and Methods A total of 191 participants (55.5% men, 44.5% women) participated. The response rate was 63.6%. The hospital anxiety and depression scale (HADS) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) were used to assess depression score and sleep quality, respectively. Results Nurses who worked night shifts had substantially higher PSQI ratings (p<0.05) than those who worked day shifts. In addition, there was a clear relationship between the HADS and PSQI scores. According to the binary logistic regression, longer working hours and inadequate sleep were both independently linked to depressive symptoms among nurses. Conclusion Poor sleep quality brought on by night shifts may explain why Saudi nurses who work night shifts experience higher rates of depression than those who work day shifts only.

Abstract
Introduction Poor sleep quality can predict poor health and is associated with mortality risk. Many factors are associated with sleep quality such as gender, health, education, socioeconomic status, and stress. The objective of this study was to estimate the magnitude of poor sleep quality among visitors of Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCCs) in Al-Ahsa and to identify factors associated with poor sleep quality. Methods This is an analytical cross-sectional study. A multistage cluster sampling technique was used to recruit 461 visitors to PHCCs in Al-Ahsa Governorate in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. A structured questionnaire was administered through face-to-face interviews. The questionnaire includes demographics, a validated Arabic version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Arabic version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), the Arabic version of the Patient Health Questionnaire-2 (PHQ-2), the Arabic version of the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-2 (GAD-2), the Arabic version of Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10), and a translated Mobile Related Sleep Risk Factors (MRSRF). Univariate analysis was performed using the Mann-Whitney U test for continuous data, the chi-square test (χ²) or Fishers's exact test (as appropriate) for categorical data, and logistic regression for multivariable analysis. A P-value of less than or equal to 0.05 was considered significant. Results The study included 433 participants, with 72.5% of them being poor sleepers (PSQI global score of over 5). The highest percentage of poor sleepers was found among those aged 18 - 28 years (81.7%), with no significant difference between genders (p = 0.676). The study's multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that poor sleep is associated with smoking four hours before bedtime (OR = 2.9, CI = 1.2 - 6.7), consuming caffeine (drinks or pills) three hours before sleep (OR = 2.3, CI = 1.23 - 4.12) or immediately before bedtime (OR = 3.2, CI = 1.02 - 9.9), using mobile phones right before bedtime (OR = 2.6, CI = 1.5 - 4.5), having anxiety (OR = 5.8, CI = 1.3 - 26.2), and depression symptoms (OR = 6.5, CI = 2.9 - 14.5), among other risk factors. Conclusion The prevalence of poor sleep quality in our sample was notably high at 72.5%. Many factors are strongly associated with poor sleep quality including experiencing symptoms of anxiety and depression. Longitudinal studies are needed to explore this crucial health issue further. Healthcare providers in Al-Ahsa should pay particular attention while assessing patients who suffer from sleep disturbance by screening them for depression and anxiety and raising public awareness of the importance of good quality sleep and the factors that affect it.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Accumulating evidence have investigated the effects of nighttime light exposure on sleep problems. Nevertheless, the evidence of the relationship between light at night (LAN) and sleep problems remains scarce and inconsistent. OBJECTIVE Conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis based on observational studies to examine the association between LAN exposure and sleep problems among human subjects. METHODS We systematically searched three databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase) to identify potentially eligible studies through May 25, 2022. The risk of bias and the quality of the generated evidence were assessed by two authors using the National Toxicology Program's Office of Health Assessment and Translation (OHAT) risk of bias rating tool and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) guideline. Random-effects model was applied to synthesize the risk estimates across eligible studies. The heterogeneity of included studies was quantified by the statistics of I2. RESULTS A total of 7 cross-sectional studies comprising 577,932 participants were included. Individuals with higher levels of LAN exposure were associated with a 22 % (Summary Odds Ratio, SOR: 1.22, 95 %CI: 1.13-1.33) increased prevalence of sleep problems. The pooled effect size of indoor LAN exposure (SOR: 1.74, 95%CI: 1.27-2.37) associated with sleep problems was significantly higher than outdoor LAN exposure (SOR: 1.19, 95%CI: 1.11-1.29; P = 0.022). Additionally, dose-response analysis demonstrated that LAN intensity threshold exceeding 5.8 nW/cm2/sr (SOR: 1.04, 95%CI: 1.01-1.07) had a significant effect on sleep problems and the prevalence of sleep problems was increasing with increase in LAN intensity. CONCLUSIONS Overall, our findings support the detrimental effects of LAN exposure on sleep. Maintaining bedroom darkness at night may be a feasible measure to reduce the prevalence of sleep problems. Future longitudinal studies with more advanced LAN assessment methods are required to move the field forward.

Abstract
Introduction This systematic review and meta-analysis aims to explore changes in sleep quality and sleep disturbances in the general population from before to during the COVID-19 lockdown. Methods The protocol was registered in PROSPERO (CRD42021256378) and the PRISMA guidelines were followed. The major databases and gray literature were systematically searched from inception to 28/05/2021 to identify observational studies evaluating sleep changes in the general population during the lockdown with respect to the pre-lockdown period. A random effects meta-analysis was undertaken for studies reporting (a) the means of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) global scores or the means of the sleep onset latency (SOL) times (minutes - min) before and during the lockdown, (b) the percentages of poor sleep quality before and during the lockdown, or (c) the percentages of changes in sleep quality. Subgroup analysis by risk of bias and measurement tool utilized was carried out. A narrative synthesis on sleep efficiency, sleep disturbances, insomnia and sleep medication consumption was also performed. Results Sixty-three studies were included. A decline in sleep quality, reflected in a pooled increase in the PSQI global scores (standardized mean difference (SMD) = 0.26; 95% CI 0.17-0.34) and in SOL (SMD = 0.38 min; 95% CI 0.30-0.45) were found. The percentage of individuals with poor sleep quality increased during the lockdown (pooled relative risk 1.4; 95% CI 1.24-1.61). Moreover, 57.3% (95% CI 50.01-61.55) of the individuals reported a change in sleep quality; in 37.3% (95% CI 34.27-40.39) of these, it was a worsening. The studies included in the systematic review reported a decrease in sleep efficiency and an increase in sleep disturbances, insomnia, and in sleep medication consumption. Discussion Timely interventions are warranted in view of the decline in sleep quality and the increase in sleep disturbances uncovered and their potentially negative impact on health. Further research and in particular longitudinal studies using validated instruments examining the long-term impact of the lockdown on sleep variables is needed. Abstract
OBJECTIVES Sleep disturbances are associated with both the onset and progression of depressive disorders. It is important to capture day-to-day variability in sleep patterns; irregular sleep is associated with depressive symptoms. We used sleep efficiency, measured with wearable devices, as an objective indicator of daily sleep variability. MATERIALS AND METHODS The total sample consists of 100 undergraduate and graduate students, 60% of whom were female. All were divided into three groups (with major depressive disorder, mild depressive symptoms, and controls). Self-report questionnaires were completed at the beginning of the experiment, and sleep efficiency data were collected daily for 2 weeks using wearable devices. We explored whether the mean value of sleep efficiency, and its variability, predicted the severity of depression using dynamic structural equation modeling. RESULTS More marked daily variability in sleep efficiency significantly predicted levels of depression and anxiety, as did the average person-level covariates (longer time in bed, poorer quality of life, lower extraversion, and higher neuroticism). CONCLUSION Large swings in day-to-day sleep efficiency and certain clinical characteristics might be associated with depression severity in young adults.
