Abstract
BACKGROUND After the official end of the dynamic zero-COVID policy in China, healthcare workers continued to heavy workloads and psychological stress. In this new phase, concerns related to work and family, rather than infection, may have become new sources of psychological issues such as depression and anxiety among healthcare workers, leading to new patterns of comorbidity. However, few studies have addressed these issues. To fill this gap, this study used network analysis to examine new features and mechanisms of comorbidity between depression and anxiety symptoms, and simulated symptom-specific interventions to identify effective targets for intervention. METHODS A total of 708 Chinese healthcare workers (71.2% females; Age: M = 37.55, SD = 9.37) were recruited and completed the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) and Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7). This study first calculated the incidence rates of anxiety, depression, and their comorbidity, and then constructed the comorbid Ising network. Central and bridge symptoms were identified with expected influence (EI) and bridge EI, respectively. The NodeIdentifyR algorithm (NIRA) was then used to simulate interventions within the network, examining the effects of alleviating or aggravating specific symptoms on the network's severity. RESULTS 48.2% of Chinese healthcare workers reported experiencing depression (19.8%), anxiety (11.7%), or both (16.2%). In the anxiety-depression network, "guilt" and "appetite changes" were identified as the central symptoms, and "guilt" and "excessive worry" were identified as the bridge symptoms. Simulated interventions suggested that alleviating "Anhedonia" can the most reduce the overall severity of the network, while aggravating "guilt" can the most increase the overall severity. These two symptoms were considered the key target for treatment and prevention, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Chinese healthcare workers still face high risk of depression, anxiety, and comorbidity in the post-dynamic zero-COVID policy era. Our findings highlight the key roles of guilt, appetite changes, and excessive worry in the network of depression and anxiety symptoms. Future research should apply the results of the simulated interventions, develop intervention strategies targeting anhedonia, and focus on preventing guilt to improve the healthcare workers' mental health. Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the cross-sectional and longitudinal bidirectional associations of depression and anxiety symptoms with the development of obesity over time among children and adolescents in different age groups from childhood to young adulthood. METHODS This is a three-wave longitudinal study that included >200,000 school-aged children between 5 and 18 years. Participants were assessed at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months. Depression and anxiety symptoms, as well as participants' weight and height, were collected at each assessment. The cross-sectional associations between obesity and depression or anxiety were examined through ANOVA and Chi-square tests. Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to investigate their longitudinal bidirectional associations. RESULTS The prevalence of obesity reached a peak in the age group between 12 and 14 years. Concurrently, higher mean BMI and obesity prevalence were associated with more severe symptoms of depression and anxiety in each age group (ps < 0.001). Longitudinally, depression and anxiety significantly increased the risk of development of obesity over time (odds ratios [ORs] = 1.08 to 1.77). Moreover, obesity significantly aggravated the risk of development of depression (ORs = 1.17 to 1.68) and anxiety (ORs = 1.25 to 1.71) over time and hindered the alleviation of depressive (ORs = 0.68 to 0.79) and anxiety symptoms (ORs = 0.73 to 0.74). CONCLUSION Findings suggest that there were bidirectional associations between obesity and psychological distress. It may be important to continuously track BMI and psychological conditions for children and adolescents over time to avoid the reinforcement of their negative reciprocal interactions.

Abstract
Anhedonia constitutes a core symptom of major depressive disorder (MDD) mediating the ultimate goal of MDD treatment: functional remission. Anhedonia is also present in other clinical populations, including patients with chronic pain. Recent data links anhedonia to insulin resistance (IR). Some researchers have underlined a different dimension of anhedonia as a temperament/personality trait. The objective of this post-hoc analysis was to explore the links between anhedonia (main outcome) and (1) IR, (2) temperamental, personality, and schizotypy traits (exposures). The study population included patients with MDD, fibromyalgia, and healthy controls. Participants were split into groups: (1) insulin resistant (IR[+] n = 69, HOMA-IR ≥ 2.1) and (2) insulin sensitive (IR[-] n = 69, HOMA-IR < 2.1). Anhedonia was significantly higher in the IR[+] group than the IR[-] group. IR was a predictor of higher anhedonia levels. IR[+] vs. IR[-] participants showed higher levels of anxiety and lower levels of hyperthymic affective temperaments, as well as conscientiousness and emotional stability personality traits. Depressive, irritable, and anxious temperaments, cognitive disorganization, and introvertive anhedonia positively predicted anhedonia, while hyperthymic temperament, conscientiousness, extraversion, and emotional stability traits negatively predicted anhedonia. IR partially mediated the relationship between depressive temperament and anhedonia. In sum, IR, affective temperaments, and personality traits are predictors of anhedonia.

Abstract
Anhedonia describes the inability or difficulty of experiencing or seeking pleasure. Previous research has demonstrated a relationship between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or experiencing trauma and anhedonia symptoms; however, little to no work has been done to understand the evolution of anhedonia symptoms after trauma. We aimed to identify anhedonia trajectories following traumatic injury. One hundred ninety-five participants were recruited from the emergency department of a Level-1 Trauma Center after experiencing a traumatic injury. To measure anhedonia symptoms, participants completed the Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS) at 2-weeks, 3-months, and 6-months post-injury. Using latent class mixture modeling, we ran a trajectory analysis with three timepoints of SHAPS scores and compared mental and physical health outcomes across trajectories. Most of the sample fell in the resilient trajectory (85%), while the remainder were in a remitting trajectory (7%) where symptoms decreased over time, and a delayed (6%) trajectory where symptoms did not emerge until 3-months after injury. In the resilient trajectory, there was consistently low levels of PTSD, pain, depression, and anxiety relative to the other trajectories. In the delayed trajectory, depression and PTSD were chronically elevated and pain levels were consistent but mild. In the remitting trajectory, PTSD and depression symptoms decreased over time. Identified anhedonia trajectories mirrored trajectories commonly reported for PTSD symptoms after injury. Evaluating anhedonia trajectories and how they relate to mental health outcomes may inform targeted interventions for traumatic injury patients.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The post-COVID-19 condition (PCC) is characterized by persistent, distressing symptoms following an acute COVID-19 infection. These symptoms encompass various domains, including hedonic tone, which is critical for overall well-being. Furthermore, obesity is both a risk factor for COVID-19 and PCC and associated with impaired hedonic tone. This study aims to investigate whether elevated body mass index (BMI) is associated with hedonic tone in persons with PCC. METHODS We perform a post hoc analysis of a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial investigating the impact of vortioxetine on cognitive impairment in persons with PCC. Statistical analysis of baseline data using a generalized linear model was undertaken to determine the relationship of BMI to hedonic tone measured by Snaith-Hamilton Pleasure Scale (SHAPS) scores. The model was adjusted for covariates including age, sex, race, suspected versus confirmed COVID-19 cases, alcohol amount consumed per week, and annual household income. RESULTS The baseline data of 147 participants were available for analysis. BMI had a statistically significant positive association with baseline SHAPS total scores (β = 0.003, 95% CI [6.251E-5, 0.006], p = 0.045), indicating elevated BMI is associated with deficits in self-reported reward system functioning. CONCLUSION Higher BMI is associated with greater deficits in hedonic tone in persons with PCC, which may impact reward functioning processes such as reward prediction and processing. The mediatory effect of BMI on reward function underscores the need to investigate the neurobiologic interactions to elucidate preventative and therapeutic interventions for persons with PCC. Therapeutic development targeting debilitating features of PCC (e.g., motivation, cognitive dysfunction) could consider stratification on the basis of baseline BMI. Abstract
Developing a more nuanced understanding of factors predicting risk of dietary lapse (i.e., instances of non-adherence to a reduced calorie diet) is important, because dietary lapses contribute to suboptimal weight outcomes. The study investigated, for the first time, how various everyday activities affected likelihood of dietary lapses at two timescales-both in-the-moment, and in the hours after engaging in an activity. Participants (N = 107) with overweight/obesity in a behavioral weight loss program completed ecological momentary assessment surveys on dietary adherence and daily activities for 3 weeks at mid-treatment. Generalized estimating equations revealed that socializing predicted greater concurrent lapse risk, while work/school, doing chores, cooking, or practicing a spiritual activity/prayer/meditation were associated with reduced lapse risk. In terms of subsequent effects, cooking and indoor hobbies were associated with greater lapse risk in the next few hours, whereas spiritual activity/meditation was associated with reduced risk. Certain activities may have affected concurrent and subsequent lapse risk due to: their influence on the presence of tempting food, the compatibility of engaging in the activity and eating simultaneously, and the reward reaped from the activity (potentially reducing desire for food-related reward). Findings speak to the importance of attending to the timescale of relationships between activities and lapses, which has clinical implications for providing nuanced and optimally timed interventions for overweight/obesity.

OBJECTIVE Although altered reward processing is proposed to play a key role in obesity maintenance, the role of food enjoyment and enjoyment of non-food naturally rewarding activities ("non-food enjoyment") in obesity maintenance remains unknown. This study examined how food and non-food enjoyment were associated with baseline body mass index (BMI) and weight loss (WL) following year-long behavioral WL treatment. METHODS At baseline, participants (MAge = 51.81; 73.8 % White, N = 279) with overweight/obesity completed a 7-day ecological momentary assessment (EMA) protocol inquiring about pleasure/enjoyment derived from eating and non-food activities over the past few hours. Participants also completed retrospective self-report measures of food/non-food enjoyment. With linear regressions, associations between EMA food/non-food enjoyment and BMI and post-treatment WL were examined. Race was included as a covariate. RESULTS EMA and retrospective food/non-food enjoyment measures had modest concordance, providing preliminary psychometric support for the EMA measures. Partially consistent with hypotheses, greater EMA food enjoyment was associated with lower BMI (B = -1.03, p = .01) and with greater WL, though the latter association was not statistically significant (B = 1.15, p = .07). Exploratory analyses suggested that race was associated with food enjoyment (non-White participants had greater food enjoyment than White participants, d = 0.81, p = .005), and that race may have affected associations between food enjoyment and weight outcomes. Associations between non-food enjoyment and weight outcomes were small and nonsignificant (ps > .93). CONCLUSIONS Results suggest enjoyment from food, but not from non-food domains, is associated with weight outcomes.

Abstract
Chronic pain is associated with anhedonia and decreased motivation. These behavioral alterations have been linked to alterations in the limbic brain and could explain the increased risk for obesity in pain patients. The mechanism of these behavioral changes and how they set in in relation to the development of chronic pain remain however poorly understood. Here we asked how eating behavior was affected in low-back pain patients before and after they transitioned to chronic pain, compared to patients whose pain subsided. Additionally, we assessed how the hedonic perception of fat-rich food, which is altered in chronic pain patients, related to the properties of the nucleus accumbens in this patients' population. We hypothesized that the accumbens would be directly implicated in the hedonic processing of fat-rich food in pain patients because of its well-established role in hedonic feeding and fat ingestion, and its emerging role in chronic pain. Accordingly, we used behavioral assays and structural brain imaging to test sub-acute back pain patients (SBP) and healthy control subjects at baseline and at approximately one-year follow-up. We also studied a sample of chronic low-back pain patients (CLBP) at one time point only. We found that SBP patients who recovered at follow-up (SBPr) and CLBP patients showed disrupted eating behaviors. In contrast, SBP patients who persisted in having pain at follow-up (SBPp) showed intact eating behavior. From a neurological standpoint, only SBPp and CLBP patients showed a strong and direct relationship between hedonic perception of fat-rich food and nucleus accumbens volume. This suggests that accumbens alterations observed in SBPp patients in previous works might protect them from hedonic eating disruptions during the early course of the illness. We conclude that disrupted eating behavior specifically sets in after pain chronification and is accompanied by structural changes in the nucleus accumbens.

Abstract
RATIONALE Laboratory research in adults indicates that alcohol-related subjective effects are enhanced under some social conditions. However, it is unknown whether this "social facilitation" of alcohol effects occurs in adolescents and is associated with alcohol use in the natural ecology. OBJECTIVES We examined associations of social facilitation of alcohol-related subjective effects with subsequent alcohol use among a relatively high-risk group of adolescents who reported drinking alcohol both with friends and alone. METHODS Los Angeles high school students from a prospective study (N = 142; 51% female; 10th graders) completed a baseline survey that assessed alcohol-related "positive" and "negative" subjective effects in two contexts: social (alcohol with friends) and solitary (alcohol alone); social facilitation was calculated as the difference between social and solitary. Students then completed five semi-annual surveys spanning 30 months (2014-2017) assessing 30-day alcohol use (days used, number of drinks, binge drinking). RESULTS Greater social facilitation of positive effects was significantly associated with greater number of alcohol use days (RR [95% CI] = 1.48 [1.19, 1.82]; p < .001), greater number of drinks (RR [95% CI] = 1.38 [1.14, 1.66]; p = .001), and greater odds of binge drinking (OR [95% CI] = 1.75 [1.20, 2.57]; p = .004). Similar associations were found with social positive effects. There were no significant associations between solitary positive effects-or any negative effects-and alcohol use outcomes. CONCLUSIONS Social facilitation can be measured outside of the laboratory. Relatively high-risk drinking adolescents who are more susceptible to the social facilitation of subjective alcohol effects are more likely to use more alcohol and binge drink.

Abstract
Low positive affect has been identified as an antecedent of binge-eating episodes among individuals with binge-eating disorder (BED), yet positive affect has received far less attention in eating disorders research than its counterpart, negative affect. In this article, we argue that the low levels of positive affect which occur with anhedonia (i.e., loss of interest or pleasure in activities) may contribute to the onset and maintenance of BED. We introduce a theoretical model in which anhedonia increases the risk for BED through its interrelationships with dysregulated eating and weight gain, and we describe potential direct (e.g., reward-related processes) as well as indirect (e.g., influences on depressive symptoms and physical activity) pathways by which anhedonia may lead to adverse eating- and weight-related outcomes. We also propose a momentary maintenance model in which low positive affect and positive affect dysregulation occurring with anhedonia maintain binge eating directly and indirectly through maladaptive health behaviors, such as decreased physical activity, less healthy eating, and fewer social interactions, which in turn maintain anhedonia. We draw upon outside literature to present evidence that aligns with the proposed risk and maintenance models and conclude by outlining avenues for future research-including methodological/measurement, theoretical, and clinical research directions.

Abstract
Affect and reward are associated with unhealthy eating and weight; however, less research has examined affective predictors of hedonic hunger (i.e., extreme reward responsivity, pleasure toward, and drive for food), particularly among adolescents. Whether symptoms indicative of emotional disturbance increase risk of adverse reward-based eating-related symptoms such as hedonic hunger, is unknown. Such evidence could explain why emotional problems increase risk of eating and weight problems among adolescents, when eating-related health problems often originate. This report examined baseline emotional disorder symptoms, negative urgency (i.e., tendency to act impulsively in response to negative affect), and anhedonia (i.e., loss of interest in activities and decreased pleasure) as prospective predictors of increases in hedonic hunger in adolescents; associations between changes in emotional disturbance problems and hedonic hunger were also examined. Ninth-grade students (N = 2598) from high schools completed paper-and-pencil surveys at baseline and a 1-year follow-up. In a multivariable model controlling for the covariance of emotional problems, higher negative urgency, general anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and lower anhedonia at baseline independently predicted increases in hedonic hunger one year later. Also, increases in negative urgency, general anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive symptoms and decreases in anhedonia independently predicted increases in hedonic hunger. Affect- and reward-related variables may be important contributors to risk of hedonic hunger in adolescence.

Abstract
Objective Scant research exists on the gender-specific association between physical activity, insomnia symptoms and depressive symptoms among adolescents. The present study investigates the direct and indirect association of insomnia and physical activity with symptoms of depression. Design In a community-based sample (N = 1485) we investigated factors associated with symptoms of depression focusing on insomnia. The study also included measures of physical activity and controlled for parental work- and sexual minority status. Body mass Index (BMI) was calculated for a sub-sample (n = 617) reporting weight and height. Results The results showed that self-reported insomnia was highly prevalent, and the association between insomnia and depression was strong. The association between insomnia and depression was significantly stronger for girls than for boys. The effect of physical activity was substantially weaker compared to insomnia. Insomnia mediated the relationship between physical activity and depression for both boys and girls. Despite expectation based on the existing literature, BMI showed no association with symptoms of depression or physical activity. Conclusion The results address the importance of a gender-specific approach when investigating mental health among adolescents. Given the high prevalence, interventions aimed at reducing insomnia is important in the prevention of mental illness, especially among girls.
