Source-oriented risks apportionment of toxic metals in river sediments of Bangladesh: a national wide application of PMF model and pollution indices

Intense human activities, particularly industrial and agricultural output, has enriched metal(loid)s in riverine sediment and endangered aquatic ecosystems and human health. Promoting proper river management requires an assessment of the possible ecological hazards and pollution posed by metal(loid)s in sediments. However, there are limited large-scale risk assessments of metal(loid)s contamination in riverine sediment in heavily populated nations like Bangladesh. This study compiled data on sediment metal(loid)s, for example, Cd, As, Cu, Ni, Cr, Pb, Mn, and Zn, from 24 major rivers located across Bangladesh between 2011 and 2022 and applied positive matrix factorization (PMF) to identify the critical metal(loid)s sources and PMF model-based ecological risks. Based on studied metal(loid)s, 12-78% of rivers posed higher contents than the upper continental crust and 8% of the river sediments for Cr and Ni, whereas 4% for Cd and As exceeded probable effect concentration. Cr and Ni in the sum of toxic units (STU), whereas Mn, As and Cd in potential ecological risk (PER) posed the highest contribution to contaminate sediments. In the studied rivers, sediment contaminant Mn derived from natural sources; Zn and Ni originated from mixed sources; Cr and Cu were released from the tannery and industrial emissions and Cd originated from agricultural practices. Source-based PER and NIRI indicated that mixed source (4% rivers) and tannery and industrial emission (4% rivers) posed very high risks in sediments. For the creation of macroscale policies and the restoration of contaminated rivers, our national-scale comprehensive study offers helpful references.

Molecular insights into the dissolved organic matter of leather wastewater in leather industrial park wastewater treatment plant

Leather wastewater (LW) effluent is characterized by complex organic matter, high salinity, and poor biodegradability. To meet the discharge standards, LW effluent is often mixed with municipal wastewater (MW) before being treated at a leather industrial park wastewater treatment plant (LIPWWTP). However, whether this method efficiently removes the dissolved organic matter (DOM) from LW effluent (LWDOM) remains debatable. In this study, the transformation of DOM during full-scale treatment was revealed using spectroscopy and Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry. LWDOM exhibited higher aromaticity and lower molecular weight than DOM in MW (MWDOM). The DOM properties in mixed wastewater (MixW) were similar to those in LWDOM and MWDOM. The MixW was treated using a flocculation/primary sedimentation tank (FL₁/PST), anoxic/oxic (A/O) process, secondary sedimentation tank (SST), flocculation/sedimentation tank, denitrification filter (FL₂/ST-DNF), and an ozonation contact reactor (O₃). The FL₁/PST unit preferentially removed the peptide-like compounds. The A/O-SST units had the highest removal efficiencies for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) (61.34 %) and soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) (52.2 %). The FL₂/ST-DNF treatment removed the lignin-like compounds. The final treatment showed poor DOM mineralization efficiency. The correlation between water quality indices, spectral indices, and molecular-level parameters indicated that lignin-like compounds were strongly correlated with spectral indices and CHOS compounds considerably contributed to the SCOD and DOC. Although the effluent SCOD met the discharge standard, some refractory DOM from LW remained in the effluent. This study illustrates the composition and transformation of DOM and provides theoretical guidance for improving the current treatment processes.

Assessing the impact of lime on chromium migration in soil caused by basic chromium sulfate in tannery

Chromium (Cr) pollution is the primary pollution problem of the soil in tannery. However, the effect of tanning chemicals on Cr migration in soil has not been clearly elucidated. Column leaching tests were designed in this study to reveal the transport and transformation of Cr from basic chromium sulfate (BCS) into soil and the effects of lime on Cr migration and transformation. The results showed that BCS was mainly leached out in the state of Cr(VI) after entering the soil, and the Cr concentration in leachate decreased with the increase of the bulking thickness of the BCS. Compared with the soil absent of lime, the concentration of total Cr in the leachate from soil with lime decreased by 8.80-88.1%. The proportions of Cr in the residual fraction were generally increased in the soil with lime, whereas other fractions were decreased. The presence of lime can reduce the migration and toxicity of BCS in soil to a certain extent. The analysis of soil bacterial community showed that the relative abundance of Proteobacteria increased significantly with the exposure to BCS and the Burkholderiaceae was the dominant bacteria family in the BCS contaminated soil. Understanding the mobility of BCS and lime and the bacterial community in BCS contaminated soil is conducive to the risk assessment of the tannery site.

Optimization of Cr (VI) removal from aqueous solution with activated carbon derived from Eichhornia crassipes under response surface methodology

Tannery industries' effluent contains a high concentration of Cr (VI) which has the potential to affect the environment and public health. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the optimization of Cr (VI) adsorption by activated carbon (AC) derived from Eichhornia crassipes from an aqueous solution. The adsorbent was activated with dilute sulfuric acid followed by thermal activation. AC was characterized using proximate analysis, SEM, FTIR, X-ray diffraction, and the BET method. The Cr (VI) removal optimization process was performed using a central composite design under the response surface methodology. The proximate analysis showed that the moisture content, volatile matter, ash content, and fixed carbon of the activated carbon were 5.6%, 18.2%, 14.4%, and 61.8% respectively. The surface areas of the Eichhornia crassipes before activation, after activation, and after adsorption were 60.6 g/m², 794.2 g/m², and 412.6 g/m² respectively. A highly porous structure with heterogeneous and irregular shapes was observed in the SEM micrograph. In the FTIR analysis, different peaks are indicated with various functional groups. The intensity of XRD peaks decreased as 2 theta values increased, which indicates the presence of an amorphous carbon arrangement. The point of zero charge (pH_pzc) of the activated carbon was found to be 5.20. A maximum Cr (VI) removal of 98.4% was achieved at pH 5, contact time 90 min, adsorbent dose 2 g, and initial Cr (VI) concentration of 2.25 mg/L. Statistically significant interactions (P < 0.05) were observed between the initial Cr (VI) concentration and adsorbent dose as well as the initial Cr (VI) concentration and contact time. Langmuir adsorption isotherm fitted the experimental data best, with an R² value of 0.99. The separation constant (RL) indicates that the adsorption process is favorable. The kinetic experimental data were best fitted with the pseudo-second-order model with an R² value of 0.99 whereas the adsorption rate is controlled by intraparticle and extragranular diffusion processes. Generally, the AC has the potential to be a strong adsorbent candidate for wastewater treatment at the industrial level.

Combined application of microbes immobilized carbon reactor and the reactive struvite system for the management of tannery deliming wastewater

This present study investigated the removal of COD and ammoniacal nitrogen (NH₄⁺-N) from tannery deliming wastewater (TDLWW) through microbes immobilized carbon consisted a bioreactor (MICCR) and reactive struvite crystallization process. Initially, 90% of the organic content of TDLWW was removed using a MICCR reactor at 24 h retention time. Nanoporous carbon (NPC) was used as the carrier matrix for the MICCR reactor. SEM and AFM images of NPC used in the MICCR reactor identify different microorganisms on its surface. The microbial profile of NPC used in the MICCR was analyzed, and the relative abundance is phyla Firmicutes, 25.64%; Proteobacteria, 43.68%; Bacteroidetes, 6.58%; Cyanobacteria, 2.22%; Actinobacteria, 2.34% reason for organic removal. The removal of organics follows the pseudo-second-order rate kinetics with the rate constant of 1.75 × 10^-3 L COD^-1 h^-1. For the reactive struvite crystallization, MgO and Na₂HPO₄.2H₂O were taken as the precipitating agents. The optimum molar ratio for the maximum conversion of NH₄⁺-N into struvite was obtained as 1:1.4:1.4 (NH₄⁺-N:MgO:Na₂HPO₄.2H₂O). The volume of struvite precipitate was 48.5 mL/L of TDLWW, and the dry weight was 8.89 g/L. More than 93% of NH₄⁺-N was converted as the struvite fertilizer. The conversion of NH₄⁺-N into struvite follows the pseudo-first-order rate kinetics with the rate constant of 1.67 × 10^-2 min^-1. Despite the conversion of NH₄⁺-N into struvite, COD removal was observed, which confirms the conversion of organic nitrogen into struvite. The struvite was evaluated using SEM, XRD, TGA, DSC, and FT-IR spectroscopic analysis. Hence, the integrated MICCR and the reactive struvite crystallization process can be applied to manage tannery deliming wastewater.

An overview of deploying membrane bioreactors in saline wastewater treatment from perspectives of microbial and treatment performance

The discharged saline wastewater has severely influenced the aquatic environment as the treatment performance of many wastewater treatment techniques is limited. In addition, the sources of saline wastewater are also plentiful from agricultural and various industrial fields such as food processing, tannery, pharmaceutical, etc. Although high salinity levels negatively impact the performance of both physicochemical and biological processes, membrane bioreactor (MBR) processes are considered as a potential technology to treat saline wastewater under different salinity levels depending on the adaption of the microbial community. Therefore, this study aims to systematically review the application of MBR widely used in the saline wastewater treatment from the perspectives of microbial structure and treatment efficiencies. At last, the concept of carbon dioxide capture and storage will be proposed for the MBR-treating saline wastewater technologies and considered toward the circular economy with the target of zero emission.

Tannery wastewater treatment coupled with bioenergy production in upflow microbial fuel cell under saline condition

Tannery industry handling huge amount of leather materials release immense amount of saline organic content wastewater. The present research was focused on the treatment of tannery industrial wastewater in UMFC (upflow microbial fuel cell) under saline condition (4%). The UMFC reactor was operated at different organic load (OL) such as 0.6, 1.2, 1.8 and 2.4 gCOD/L respectively. Total chemical oxygen demand (TCOD) removal at 0.6, 1.2, 1.8 gCOD/L was 87 ± 1.2%, 91 ± 1.2% and 93 ± 1.8% respectively. Soluble chemical oxygen demand (SCOD) removal in UMFC at 0.6, 1.2, 1.8 gCOD/L was 85 ± 0.6%, 88 ± 1.2% and 91 ± 1.8% respectively. Total suspended solids (TSS) removal was 49%, 78%, 81% at 0.6, 1.2, 1.8 gCOD/L OL in UMFC. Further, raise in OL to 2.4 gCOD/L showed decrease in TCOD, SCOD (80% and 72%) and TSS (60%) removal. Maximal power production of 854 mV with corresponding PD (power density) of 462 mW/m² and CD (current density) of 523 mA/m² was registered at 1.8 gCOD/L OL in UMFC. Increase in OL to 2.4 gCOD/L revealed decline in energy production to 810 mV with PD (385 mW/m²) and CD (438 mA/m²) in UMFC. Maximal bioaccumulation of chromium (95%) was recorded at 1.8 gCOD/L OL. Among different OL used 1.8 gCOD/L OL was optimum for the treatment of tannery wastewater and energy production. Bacterial community analysis in anode of UMFC revealed the dominance of promising electrogenic halophilic strains such as Ochrobactrum, Marinobacter, Rhodococcus and Bacillus in all the OL. Thus, the research clearly revealed the efficacy of halophilic consortium to treat the saline tannery wastewater coupled with bioenergy production in UMFC.

Comparison of degradation kinetics of tannery wastewater treatment using a nonlinear model by salt-tolerant Nitrosomonas sp. and Nitrobacter sp

Conventional biological treatment has been reported to be ineffective for pollutant removal in tannery wastewater due to high salinity. To overcome it, this work used salt-tolerant bacteria (STB) isolated from a membrane bioreactor to evaluate the organic and nutrient removal through a series of batch experiments. Compared with the control, the STB reactor enhanced the reduction of persistent organics by 11% based on the double exponential decay model. Besides, the removal of NH₄⁺-N is 26% higher, satisfying the first-order decay model. The nitrification was inhibited entirely in control during 48 h, whilst the assimilation process involved 55% of total nitrogen removal. In the STB reactor, nitrification occurred after 12 h, resulting in significantly increased NO₂^--N and NO₃^--N concentrations according to the logistic function. Although nitrification was successfully activated, C/N ratios and free ammonia were identified as limiting factors for STB activity, requiring mitigation strategies in further studies.

Bio-intervention phyto-based material for raw goatskin preservation: a cleaner-sustainable approach

The regular practice of using sodium chloride to preserve raw animal skin triggers increasing salinity and total dissolved solids (TDS) in the surface and groundwater during rehydration soaking operations. The process disrupts the lives of animals, plants, and human beings. This paper is focused on the phyto-based short-term preservation of goatskin to reduce salinity in tannery soaking operations. The indigenous Persicaria hydropiper leaf was investigated to assess the preservation of animal skin to diminish salinity and TDS of tannery soaking wastewater. Methanol-extracted leaf was characterized by GC-MS and FTIR for chemical composition analysis and affiliated functional groups. Fresh goatskins were preserved at the preliminary, laboratory, and pilot-scale scenarios to establish the best possible mixture and monitor the moisture and nitrogen content, shrinkage temperature, microorganism analysis, and pollution load at each level. The processed leathers derived from the preserved skins with an optimal mixture of 10% leaf paste with 8% salt and conventional 50% salt were tested for their physical strength. Finally, the modification in fiber structure due to the varieties of preserving chemicals was evaluated through a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and detected insignificant variation of leather fibers. The findings reported in this study can be applied to the industrial level and remove certain amounts of salinity and TDS from tannery soaking wastewater.

Artisanal tannery wastewater: quantity and characteristics

Tannery wastewater is one of the most toxic waste generated in industries. In spite of this, there still remains a paucity of information on characteristics of wastewater generated from artisanal tanneries. This study, therefore, assessed the water consumption, wastewater generation rates, physicochemical and microbiological characteristics of wastewater produced from each process unit of an artisanal tannery in Ghana. The study revealed that the total amount of water use in the tannery ranged between 1171 and 2120L/day whilst the total volume of wastewater generated was within 820 and 1324L/day. Physicochemical characteristics of the different wastewater types generated at the tannery including chemical oxygen demand (13600-24333.30 mg/L), biochemical oxygen demand (1445.64-2803 mg/L), ammonia (3.20-21.38 mg/L), colour (950.35-53900.10PtCo), electrical conductivity (8170 - 10080 μS/cm), turbidity (450.24-1805NTU), suspended (1033.50-3216.40 mg/L) and dissolved (26166.50-4996.65 mg/L) solids exceeded the guidelines set by the Ghana Environmental Protection Agency. There were also high levels of chlorides, sodium, sulphates and calcium ions. The most dominant anion and cation in the wastewater were chlorides (715-20490.60 mg/L) and sodium ions (258-14056.45 mg/L) respectively. Heavy metals identified in the wastewater included zinc, aluminium, iron and chromium ions with the most dominant one being aluminium ions (0.58-78.18 mg/L). Whilst the E-coli was below detectable limit, the count of total coliforms ranged between 0 and 4.5 × 10⁴CFU/100mL. Five helminth egg species (Ascaris lumbricoides, hookworm, Trichuris trichiura, Strongyloides stercoralis, and Enterobius vermicularis) were identified with their numbers surpassing the safe limit set by the World Health Organisation for irrigation purposes. These results indicated that the indiscriminate discharge of the untreated wastewater on the bare soil as it is practised at the tannery has the potential to adversely affect public and environmental health. Appropriate treatment schemes are therefore, required to treat the wastewater to safe limits prior to discharge.

Cleaner degreasing of sheepskins by the Yarrowia lipolytica LIP2 lipase as a chemical-free alternative in the leather industry

Conventional degreasing of skins and hides in the leather industry requires high amounts of organic solvents and detergents that cause environmental issues. In this study, the LIP2 lipase from the yeast Yarrowia lipolytica (YLLIP2) was shown to be effective in degreasing sheepskins, thus reducing the amount of harmful chemicals. Using 6 mg of lipase/kg of raw skin, successful degreasing was achieved in only 15 min at pH 8 and 30°C. ToF-SIMS mass spectra of chemically and enzymatically treated sheepskinsare consistent with a selective elimination process for the enzymatic treatment. Comparative SEM microscopy, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy and physicochemical analyses showed better properties of the enzymatically treated leather than those of the chemically treated leather. Effluent physicochemical parameters showed that the enzymatic treatment is a cleaner degreasing operation. Altogether, this work opens new horizons to use the YLLIP2 lipase as a more efficient alternative in the leather industry.

Investigating the chromium status, heavy metal contamination, and ecological risk assessment via tannery waste disposal in sub-Saharan Africa (Kenya and South Africa)

To mitigate the negative environmental and public health concerns associated with increased industrial discharges amid the rapid industrial growth, sub-Saharan African countries have instituted several environmental regulations and policies. However, a paradox of good environmental policies but inadequate enforcement exists in most of these countries, with information on the pollution level unknown due to poor monitoring resources. In this study, potentially toxic heavy metal contamination and physicochemical characteristics in effluents and dumpsite soils of two tanneries in Kenya (DB) and South Africa (BO) were evaluated during the dry and rainy season of 2018. Pollution levels and ecological risk in the dumpsite soils were assessed by adopting geoaccumulation index (I_geo), contamination factor (CF), pollution load index (PLI), and ecological risk index (PRI). The results showed that the mean final effluent concentration for total dissolved solids (TDS), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and Cr, Cu, Fe, Ni, Zn, and Cd for BO (2127, 890, 1.82, 1.38, 1.96, 0.60, 1.21, and 1.16, respectively) and DB tanneries (8157, 1369, 7.90, 0.69, 1.05, 0.60, 1.72 mg/L, respectively) were above the limits of emission guidelines. The mean Cr and Cr(VI) concentrations in tannery dumpsite soils (204.9 ± 29.1 and 0.31 ± 0.01 and 943 ± 29.8 and 0.4 ± 0.07 mg/kg for BO and DB, respectively) and Fe (2498 ± 62 mg/kg in DB) exceeded acceptable thresholds of the World Health Organization (WHO), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and local background levels. A positive strong correlation was observed between Cr and organic matter, OM (r > 0.7, p < 0.001), electrical conductivity, EC (r = 0.99, p < 0.05), and As (r = 0.62; p < 0.05), suggesting a common anthropogenic point source. The mean PLI values of 5.3 and 1.6 for DB and BO dumpsites indicated significant pollution of the soils with heavy metals, specifically Cr (I_geo = 18 and 2.4 for DB and BO, respectively). Similarly, PRI values of 174.8 and 57.4 indicated a moderate and low potential ecological risk for DB and BO tannery dumpsite, respectively, with several plants sampled within the two sites exhibiting elevated levels of Cr contamination. In summary, these results provide scientific insights on the need for both improved effluent management and treatment technologies of tannery wastes, coupled with the strengthening of continuous monitoring and enforcement for compliance of industrial discharges in sub-Saharan countries.

Recovery of value-added products from wastewater using Aqueous Two-Phase Systems - A review

Aqueous two-phase system (ATPS) is long seen as a technique that promotes higher purity and yield in a single step. It is witnessing increased acceptance as a preferred choice for combined goals of concentration, separation and purification of a target product, be it industrially valuable or environmentally contaminating. Purification of biomolecules like enzymes, proteins, nucleic acids, viruses, etc. has been the forte of ATPS. Currently, the technique is used for concentrating the toxic fractions from diverse industrial let offs, from food, dairy, beverage, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, dyeing, tannery and metal-processing industries. Apart from being simple, efficient, rapid, flexible, economical, and biocompatible, the selectivity, purity and yield are on par and sometimes higher than the traditional downstream steps. From an industrial angle too, problems related to scale-up of ATPS are being actively addressed. Many novel approaches are being added by way of varying ATPS components to increase the yield and purity. Another case in point is the inclusion of optimization techniques for zeroing in on the precise setting of the operating parameters. With increasing impetus to the approach, we attempt to draw attention from academia and industries, alike, that are developing novel tweaks to the currently existing practices in ATPS. This review aims to assess and evaluate the different types of ATPS that have been used for the recovery of valuables and contaminants from industrial waste discharges.

The Catalytic Activity of Biosynthesized Magnesium Oxide Nanoparticles (MgO-NPs) for Inhibiting the Growth of Pathogenic Microbes, Tanning Effluent Treatment, and Chromium Ion Removal

Magnesium oxide nanoparticles (MgO-NPs) were synthesized using the fungal strain Aspergillus terreus S1 to overcome the disadvantages of chemical and physical methods. The factors affecting the biosynthesis process were optimized as follows: concentration of Mg(NO3)2·6H2O precursor (3 mM), contact time (36 min), pH (8), and incubation temperature (35 °C). The characterization of biosynthesized MgO-NPs was accomplished using UV-vis spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy—energy dispersive X-ray (SEM-EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and dynamic light scattering (DLS). Data confirmed the successful formation of crystallographic, spherical, well-dispersed MgO-NPs with a size range of 8.0–38.0 nm at a maximum surface plasmon resonance of 280 nm. The biological activities of biosynthesized MgO-NPs including antimicrobial activity, biotreatment of tanning effluent, and chromium ion removal were investigated. The highest growth inhibition of pathogenic Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli, and Candida albicans was achieved at 200 μg mL–1 of MgO-NPs. The biosynthesized MgO-NPs exhibited high efficacy to decolorize the tanning effluent (96.8 ± 1.7% after 150 min at 1.0 µg mL–1) and greatly decrease chemical parameters including total suspended solids (TSS), total dissolved solids (TDS), biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and conductivity with percentages of 98.04, 98.3, 89.1, 97.2, and 97.7%, respectively. Further, the biosynthesized MgO-NPs showed a strong potential to remove chromium ions from the tanning effluent, from 835.3 mg L–1 to 21.0 mg L–1, with a removal percentage of 97.5%.

Advanced Oxidation Processes and Biotechnological Alternatives for the Treatment of Tannery Wastewater

The tannery industry is one of the economic sectors that contributes to the development of different countries. Globally, Europe and Asia are the main producers of this industry, although Latin America and Africa have been growing considerably in recent years. With this growth, the negative environmental impacts towards different ecosystem resources as a result of the discharges of recalcitrated pollutants, have led to different investigations to generate alternative solutions. Worldwide, different technologies have been studied to address this problem, biological and physicochemical processes have been widely studied, presenting drawbacks with some recalcitrant compounds. This review provides a context on the different existing technologies for the treatment of tannery wastewater, analyzing the physicochemical composition of this liquid waste, the impact it generates on human health and ecosystems and the advances in the different existing technologies, focusing on advanced oxidation processes and the use of microalgae. The coupling of advanced oxidation processes with biological processes, mainly microalgae, is seen as a viable biotechnological strategy, not only for the removal of pollutants, but also to obtain value-added products with potential use in the biorefining of the biomass.

Antibiotics, algal evaluations and subacute effects of abattoir wastewater on liver function enzymes, genetic and haematologic biomarkers in the freshwater fish, Clarias gariepinus

Abattoirs are positioned close to freshwaters in most developing countries where untreated wastewaters are discharged into with potential risk to aquatic life such as fish and ultimately human health. We assessed physicochemical parameters, antibiotics (oxytetracycline and diclofenac) and algal load of effluent collected from a major abattoir in Nigeria. Furthermore, liver function enzymes, genotoxic and haemotoxic effects of subacute concentration (10% of 96 hLC₅₀ value) of the wastewater were evaluated over a period of 28 d in Clarias gariepinus (The African Sharptooth Catfish). The 96 hLC₅₀ value of the abattoir wastewater against C. gariepinus was 154.14 mL/L (15.4%). Nitrates, phosphates, sulphates, chloride, ammonia, TDS, TSS, BOD₅ and heavy metals (Fe and Pb) in the wastewater were above permissible limits while diclofenac and oxytetracycline were below detection limit (BDL). Microalgae in the wastewater were mostly Bacilliariophyta (Navicula spp.) (45.64%) and euglenoids (Euglena and Phacus spp.) (49.48%). Liver function enzymes (LDH, AST, ALT) level were higher in exposed fishes except for ALP which was lower at day 28 compared to control levels. Erythrocytic genotoxic indices (nuclear abnormalities) were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the exposed fishes particularly at day 28 compared to control. Haematologic indices level such as WBC, MCV MCH, MCHC increased significantly (p < 0.05) while lymphocytes, HGB, RBC, HCT levels decreased significantly (p < 0.05) in the exposed C. gariepinus by day 28 compared to control. These results demonstrate potential adverse effects posed to aquatic fish species in the Ogun River by the discharge of the abattoir effluent. The microalgae species identified in the effluent may be explored for pre-treatment of the effluent before discharge in order to prevent eutrophication and increased pollutant load in the River. The study results will contribute to evidence-based environmental risk management of the River which is relevant to the UN SDGs 6 (clean water and sanitation), 11 (sustainable cities and communities) and 14 (sustaining life below water).

Wastewater treatment, reuse, and disposal-associated effects on environment and health

This paper presents the review of the literature published in the year 2019 related to treatment and reuse of wastewater and effects on the environment and human health. The scientific review on the treatment and reuse of wastewaters is divided into various sections in the paper. The review sections cover wastewater management, reuse, removal of microorganisms, and chemical constituents. Besides, the review also covers research focused on wastewater treatment plants, disposal, and the management of wastewater sludge as well as biosolids in the environment. PRACTITIONER POINTS: This paper highlights the review of scientific literature published in the year 2019.Review provide issues related to health risks associated with human and the general environment on the reuse of wastewater, treatment as well as disposal.The literature review covers selected papers relevant to the topic.

Impact of post-tanning chemicals on the pollution load of tannery wastewater

The leather industry uses a large amount of chemicals to transform a raw hide into finished leather. Chemicals are not fully taken up by leather and thus end up in tannery wastewater. Physicochemical and toxicological characterization of tannery effluents has been widely assessed. However, the characterization of processing chemicals and their relation to the pollution load of effluents remains unknown. Thus, this study aimed to assess a physicochemical and cytotoxic characterization of chemicals used in the leather post-tanning process and to evaluate the contribution of each chemical to the pollution load of raw wastewater. This study was performed using a leather post-tanning formulation applied by a large tannery located in Brazil. Deacidulation agents caused high conductivity and dissolved solids in wastewater. Retanning agents (natural and synthetic tannins) were responsible for the largest inorganic pollution load, and synthetic tannins were more toxic than natural ones. Fatliquoring agents released the highest chemical oxygen demand load in wastewater and they were the chemical group that presented the highest toxicity. Fixing agent and black dye provided inorganic pollution load to wastewater, and nitrogen pollution of wastewater was mainly related to the neutralizing retanner and the black dye.

Cr (VI) reduction by photocatalyic process: Nb2O5 an alternative catalyst

In this study, Nb₂O₅ catalyst was applied in the photocatalytic process for the Chromium reduction. Cr (VI) is a compound classified as highly toxic and often found in industrial tannery effluents. The techniques used for the photocatalytic material characterization were: X-ray diffraction, Specific surface area (B.E.T method), photo-acoustic spectroscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray Dispersive Energy Spectrometry (EDS). A comparison between Nb₂O₅ and TiO₂ (widely used in photocatalytic reactions) indicated that Nb₂O₅ has 20% more Cr (VI) reduction than TiO₂. Tests carried out with Nb₂O₅ calcined at 500 °C and with non-calcined Nb₂O₅ showed that the heat treatment did not favor the reaction. Parameters such as pH, radiation intensity, initial concentration of Cr (VI) and amount of catalyst were studied. The results indicated that the acid (pH 2), emitted radiation intensity (250 W), initial concentration Cr (VI) at 10 mg L^-1 and 1.5 g L^-1 Nb₂O₅ non-calcined are the process optimal conditions. In addition, the reuse tests for Nb₂O₅ in consecutive cycles four, were realized. Photostability was maintained at approximately 90% for all cycles when Nb₂O₅ calcined was used. On the other hand, when using Nb₂O₅ non-calcined reduced by 21% during the four tests. This behavior is possibly due to the greater adsorption capacity of the non-calcined material. Making the Nb₂O₅ catalyst attractive for considering larger scale tests.

Quantitative analysis of lead in cows and buffaloes for health assessment

The present study aimed to investigate the concentration of highly toxic heavy metal, lead (Pb), in cows and buffaloes of Sargodha district, Punjab, Pakistan. Samples of three major organs (spleen, lungs, bones) from five localities were obtained from two age groups (< 2 years, > 2 years) of each animal. With the confidence level of 95%, the investigated results demonstrated that lead concentration ranged from 0.28 to 1.12 mg kg^-1 and 0.31 to 0.83 mg kg^-1 in cows and buffaloes respectively. Out of the three tested organs, spleen contained the highest level of Pb (0.64-0.83 mg/kg) followed by lungs (0.28-1.12 mg/kg) and bones (0.36-0.87 mg/kg). Furthermore, a significant increase of Pb was observed in older animals. It was demonstrated that both age groups had Pb accumulation higher than the standard limit of 0.1 mg kg^-1. Serving as bioindicators, the presence of toxic levels of lead in the animals indicated environmental pollution and possible risks for public health. High lead concentration in dietary commodities from Sargodha district calls for the sound management of hazardous waste. High levels of this toxic metal also indicate the possible health risks to human population of the areas in Sargodha. It is highly needed to address this metal contamination and its probable entry route into the food chain of the domesticated animals. This must be further investigated to prevent animals from lead exposure.
