Abstract
BACKGROUND Chronic granulomatous disease (CGD) is a rare primary immunodeficiency disease characterized by defective neutrophil killing of microbial pathogens and recurrent infections. We aimed to investigate the clinical, genetic features, treatment, and outcomes in patients with CGD. METHODS Pediatric patients diagnosed with CGD from a medical center in Taiwan were enrolled from January 1999 to Oct 2021. RESULTS Nine pediatric patients with CGD were enrolled: six X-linked (XL) CGD with CYBB gene mutations, three autosomal recessive (AR) CGD with two NCF1 and one CYBA gene mutations. The median age of onset and age of diagnosis was 0.92 and 2.64 years, respectively. Patients with XL-CGD had a younger age of onset (4.6 months vs. 1.83 years, P = 0.06) and age of diagnosis (1.71 vs. 8.86 years, P = 0.024) than AR-CGD patients. The most common sites of infections were skin and soft tissue abscesses. The most common pathogens were Staphylococcus, Serratia, and Salmonella spp. Prophylactic antibiotics, anti-fungal agents, and interferon-gamma (IFN-γ) were given in 9 (100%), 7 (77.8%), and 8 (88.9%) patients, respectively. The mean duration of IFN-γ usage was 5.15 years. One male patient with XL-CGD was successfully treated with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation at 2.2 years. The mortality rate was 11.1%, and the estimated overall survival at 20 years was 66.7%. CONCLUSION Staphylococcus aureus, Serratia marcescens, and Salmonella infections are important in Taiwanese CGD patients. Patients with XL-CGD have early disease onset. IFN-γ prophylaxis and prophylactic anti-microbial agents might have an effect on alleviating the infection episodes in CGD patients.

Abstract
Age can profoundly affect susceptibility to a broad range of human diseases. Children are more susceptible to some infectious diseases such as diphtheria and pertussis, while in others, such as coronavirus disease 2019 and hepatitis A, they are more protected compared with adults. One explanation is that the composition of the immune system is a major contributing factor to disease susceptibility and severity. While most studies of the human immune system have focused on adults, how the immune system changes after birth remains poorly understood. Here, using high-dimensional spectral flow cytometry and computational methods for data integration, we analyzed more than 50 populations of immune cells in the peripheral blood, generating an immune cell atlas that defines the healthy human immune system from birth up to 75 years of age. We focused our efforts on children under 18 years old, revealing major changes in immune cell populations after birth and in children of schooling age. Specifically, CD4+ T effector memory cells, Vδ2+ gamma delta (γδ)T cells, memory B cells, plasmablasts, CD11c+ B cells and CD16+ CD56bright natural killer (NK) cells peaked in children aged 5-9 years old, whereas frequencies of T helper 1, T helper 17, dendritic cells and CD16+ CD57+ CD56dim NK cells were highest in older children (10-18 years old). The frequency of mucosal-associated invariant T cells was low in the first several years of life and highest in adults between 19 and 30 years old. Late adulthood was associated with fewer mucosal-associated invariant T cells and Vδ2+ γδ T cells but with increased frequencies of memory subsets of B cells, CD4+ and CD8+ T cells and CD57+ NK cells. This human immune cell atlas provides a critical resource to understand changes to the immune system during life and provides a reference for investigating the immune system in the context of human disease. This work may also help guide future therapies that target specific populations of immune cells to protect at-risk populations.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has ignited interest in age-specific manifestations of infection but surprisingly little is known about relative severity of infectious disease between the extremes of age. In a systematic analysis we identified 142 datasets with information on severity of disease by age for 32 different infectious diseases, 19 viral and 13 bacterial. For almost all infections, school-age children have the least severe disease, and severity starts to rise long before old age. Indeed, for many infections even young adults have more severe disease than children, and dengue was the only infection that was most severe in school-age children. Together with data on vaccine response in children and young adults, the findings suggest peak immune function is reached around 5-14 years of age. Relative immune senescence may begin much earlier than assumed, before accelerating in older age groups. This has major implications for understanding resilience to infection, optimal vaccine scheduling, and appropriate health protection policies across the life course.

Abstract
Non-typhoid salmonellosis is a common and problematic foodborne zoonotic disease in which pork and pork products can be an important potential source of infection. To prevent this disease, important efforts to monitor the situation in the main source, livestock, are conducted in most developed countries. In the European Union, European Food Safety Agency (EFSA) and European Center for Disease Control (ECDC) compile information at the member-state level, even though important differences in production systems and surveillance systems exist. Here, Salmonella surveillance systems in one of the main sources of foodborne salmonellosis, swine, and humans in Spain were reviewed to identify potential gaps and discuss potential ways of integration under a "One-Health" approach. Despite the extensive information generated through the surveillance activities, source attribution can be only routinely performed through ad-hoc outbreak investigations, and national reports on human outbreaks do not provide sufficiently detailed information to gain a better understanding of the epidemiology of the pathogen. Human and animal monitoring of Salmonella would benefit from a better exchange of information and collaboration. Analysis of spatio-temporal trends in livestock and humans could help to identify likely sources of infection and to target surveillance efforts in areas with higher prevalence or where specific strains are found.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This work aims to evaluate the Minimum Basic Data Set (MBDS) as a data source in the detection of malignant tumors and explore its usefulness as a tool for epidemiological surveillance of cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS MBDS hospital data discharge from Prince of Asturias University Hospital (HUPA, Alcalá de Henares, Madrid, Spain) and cancer cases recorded in the Hospital Cancer Registry (HCR) have been collected for the period between January 2012 and June 2014. Both databases have been linked by the number of clinical history. For the process of evaluation of MBDS, the types of cancer with more than 100 cases have been analyzed and sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values(PPV, NPV) of MBDS were calculated using as reference the diagnoses recorded in the HCR. RESULTS 3438 cases of cancer were accounted in the MBDS and 2445 in the HCR. The MBDS has a sensitivity to detect cases of cancer above 60%, although it varies depending on the type of tumor, reaching the highest values for bladder cancer. The specificity and the VPN were very high for all types of cancer studied, always on top of 95%. Finally, the VPP is generally moderate, between 50% and 70%. CONCLUSIONS The systematic exploitation of the MBDS can provide a valuable tool in the monitoring of cancer by its acceptable sensitivity and high specificity, allowing obtaining information without the delays involved in the consolidation of the annotations of the HCR. Furthermore, its use could partly mitigate the lack of data in important regions of Spain.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to understand the seasonal, geographical and clinical characteristics of Taiwanese patients hospitalized for non-typhoidal Salmonella (NTS) infections and their economic burden. Hospital data obtained from the Taiwan National Health Insurance (NHI) database between 2006 and 2008 were analysed. Infants had the highest annual incidence of 525 cases/100 000 person-years. Elderly patients aged >70 years had the highest in-hospital mortality rate (2·6%). Most (82·6%) gastroenteritis occurred in children aged <10 years. Septicaemia, pneumonia, arthritis and osteomyelitis occurred mainly in patients aged >50 years. A median medical cost for NTS-associated hospitalizations was higher for patients with septicaemia than for those with gastroenteritis. Seasonal variation of NTS-associated hospitalizations was correlated with temperature in different areas of Taiwan. In summary, infants had a high incidence of NTS-associated hospitalizations. However, the elderly had a higher in-hospital mortality rate and more invasive NTS infections than children.

Abstract
Salmonella species are a group of Gram-negative enterobacteria and known human pathogens in developing as well as industrialized countries. Despite significant advances in sanitation, provision of potable water, and highly controlled food chain surveillance, transmission of Salmonella spp. continues to affect communities, preferentially children, worldwide. This review summarizes updated concepts on typhoidal and non-typhoidal Salmonella infections, starting with a historical perspective that implicates typhoid Salmonella as a significant human pathogen since ancient times. We describe the epidemiology of this pathogen with emphasis on the most recent non-typhoidal Salmonella outbreaks in industrialized countries and continued outbreaks of typhoid Salmonella in underserved countries. An overview of clinical aspects of typhoid and non-typhoid infections in developing and industrialized countries, respectively, is provided, followed by a description on current treatment concepts and challenges treating multidrug-resistant Salmonella infections. We conclude with prevention recommendations, and recent research studies on vaccine prevention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The introduction of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) has influenced the incidence of cancer in people with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in the pattern of cancer rates in HIV-infected children on HAART during over a decade of follow-up. PATIENTS AND METHODS We carried out a case-control study. Data were obtained from the records of the minimum basic data set of hospitals in Spain from 1999 to 2008. The epidemiologic trends of cancer diagnoses were evaluated through 3 calendar periods: early-period HAART: 1997-1999, midperiod HAART: 2000-2002, and late-period HAART: 2003-2008). RESULTS HIV-infected children had higher rates of cancer diagnosis than HIV-negative children (P < 0.001) for both acquired immunodeficiency disease syndrome (AIDS)-defining malignancies (ADM) and non-AIDS-defining malignancies (non-ADM). The highest rates of cancer diagnosis in HIV-positive children were for non-Hodgkin lymphoma, malignant neoplasm of bone and articular cartilage, and Hodgkin lymphoma. When we compared the 3 calendar periods, we found that the rate of ADM diagnoses decreased (from 9.1 to 3.6 to 1.0 cancers per 1000 HIV-children/yr; P < 0.05) and that the rate of non-ADM diagnoses increased (from 0.6 to 5.0 to 8.7 cancers per 1000 HIV-children/yr; P < 0.05). Moreover, the overall rate of cancer diagnoses (ADM plus non-ADM) did not change during the study period (9.7, 8.7, and 9.7 cancers per 1000 HIV-children/yr). CONCLUSIONS HIV-infected children had a dramatic decrease in the rate of ADM diagnoses and an increase in the rate of non-ADM diagnoses. The overall cancer diagnosis rate has not decreased during the past decade and the incidence of cancer still remains high in HIV-infected children in Spain.

Abstract
SUMMARYThis is the first study comparing societal costs of acute illness with Salmonella Typhimurium (ST) and Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) in the UK. It included the cost and severity of the illness and explored the impact of each Salmonella serovar on the patients, their families, the NHS, and the wider economy. The study ascertained confirmed cases of ST and SE between July and November 2008. The mean costs per case were £1282 (ST) and £993 (SE). The indirect costs associated with the work-time lost by the case, parents, or carers were £409 (ST) and £228 (SE); this difference was statistically significant. The aggregate cost of ST and SE identified using laboratory test results for the UK as a whole was estimated as £6.5 million. Work-time lost and caring activities are cost categories that are not frequently investigated within the infectious intestinal disease literature, although they represent an important societal cost.
