Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies provided contradictory evidence regarding the relationship between metal concentrations and ischemic stroke (IS). METHODS A total of 100 adults with IS were included in this study, as well as an equal number of controls. Inductively coupled plasma-mass was used to measure metals' concentrations in whole blood and plasma. In order to identify metals that were associated with IS, we applied principal component analysis (PCA) and principal component (PC) regression. Finally, we included 3867 participants from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2020 to estimate the association between urine tin (Sn) and stroke with logistic regression and COX proportional hazard models. RESULTS The fourth PC, characterized by copper (Cu) and Sn in whole blood, was associated with a higher risk of IS (OR=19.43, 95 %CI: 4.25, 88.89 for the highest quartile vs. the lowest quartile). A higher risk of IS was linked to the second PC, characterized by Sn, aluminum (Al), titanium (Ti), nickel (Ni) in plasma (OR= 12.85, 95 %CI: 3.91, 42.26 for the highest quartile vs. the lowest quartile). For NHANES, Sn was associated with a higher risk of stroke (OR= 1.69, 95 %CI: 1.07, 2.66 for the highest quartile vs. the lowest quartile). There was no significant relationship between urine Sn and all-cause deaths. CONCLUSION In this research, the exposures of Sn, Cu, Al, Ti, and Ni were associated with IS. Specifically, the relationship between Sn and the risk of stroke has been established among both Chinese and US participants.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine the relationship between serum cholesterol levels and the ratio of zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) in the blood serum and the incidence of cardiovascular disease (CVD). In Phase I of the study, 9704 individuals between the age of 35 and 65 years were recruited. Phase II of the cohort study comprised 7561 participants who completed the 10-year follow-up. The variables which were measured at the baseline of the study included gender, age, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP); biochemical parameters including serum Cu, Zn, copper-zinc ratio (Cu/Zn), zinc-copper ratio (Zn/Cu); fasted lipid profile consisting of triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), low-density lipoprotein (LDL) as well as fasting serum glucose, and triglycerides-glucose (TyG) index. Decision tree (DT) and logical regression (LR) models were applied to examine the relationship between the aforementioned factors and CVD. CVD was diagnosed in 837 individuals (378 males and 459 females) out of 7561 participants. According to the LR models, SBP, TC, HDL, age, Zn/Cu, and TyG index for males and SBP, age, TyG index, HDL, TC, Cu/Zn, and Cu for females had the highest correlation with CVD (p-value ≤ 0.033). Based on the DT algorithm, 88% of males with SPB < 129.66 mmHg, younger age (age < 53 years), TyG index < 9.53, 173 ≤ TC < 187 mg/dL, and HDL ≥ 32 mg/dL had the lowest risk of CVD. Also, 98% of females with SBP < 128 mmHg, TyG index < 9.68, age < 44, TC < 222 mg/dL, and HDL ≥ 63.7 mg/dL had the lowest risk of CVD. It can be concluded that the Zn/Cu for men and Cu/Zn for women, along with dyslipidemia and SBP, could significantly predict the risk of CVD in this cohort from northeastern Iran.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cerebrovascular accidents (CVAs) are among the most common complications of patients today. As the prevalence of ischemic CVAs rises, detecting related risk factors is crucial. Metal concentration has previously been considered a major risk factor in several neural complications, and in this study, we will investigate this. METHODS In this case-control study, 70 CVA (clinically approved ischemic stroke cases by imaging and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)) and 70 individuals with no history of CVA controls were enrolled as the control group. The serum level of several metals, including Fe (Iron), Co (Cobalt), Ni (Nickel), Cu (copper), Zn (Zinc), Mn (Manganese), Pb (lead), Hg (Mercury), has been assessed using Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) method. Logistic regression (LR) has also been used to determine the association between metals' levels and CVA occurrence. RESULTS As the mean age of the CVA group was 48.68 ± 15.25 years and for the non-CVA group was 47.89 ± 9.65 years, the result indicated that the serum level of Cu and Pb has been statically higher in the CVA group (respectively; P < 0.001 and P = 0.002) and Ni level was significantly lower (P = 0.003). Other measured metals' levels (Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, Hg) were not significantly different between CVA and non-CVA groups. In the LR model, all Cu, Pb, and Zn metals had a P value of 0.03 and an odd ratio (OR) and confidence interval (CI) of 1.34 (1.02-1.75), 1.19 (1.01-1.39) and 1.01 (1.001-1.02) respectively. CONCLUSION Given that some metals are associated with a higher risk of CVA, researchers and physicians must better understand the risk factors and causes of the burden of CVA. However, further studies with a larger population and investigation of the exact pathogenesis of these metals are needed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the relationship between dietary zinc intake and stroke. METHODS Subjects from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database (2015 to 2020) were included. Zinc intake was determined using two 24-h dietary recall interviews, and stroke was determined using the Medical Condition Questionnaire (MCQ). Logistic analysis was used to analyze the association between zinc intake and stroke risk. 1:1 nearest neighbor propensity score matching (PSM) was used to reduce selection bias. RESULTS 4705 subjects were included in the study. Multivariate logistic regression analysis before and after matching showed that increased zinc intake was associated with a reduced risk of stroke. And as zinc intake increases, the risk of stroke shows a gradually decreasing trend. Compared with the Q1 group, the risk of stroke in the Q2, Q3, and Q4 groups was reduced by approximately 0.27 times, 0.29 times, and 0.31 times respectively. And there is no interaction between dietary zinc intake and gender in stroke patients. CONCLUSION Dietary zinc intake may be a protective factor against stroke, and increasing its intake may prevent or reduce the symptoms of stroke and related diseases.

Abstract
Background Varied intake of dietary minerals critically affects cardiovascular health. This study examines the associations of nine dietary minerals intake with all-cause mortality in atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases (ASCVDs). Methods This study analyzed 4,125 individuals with ASCVD from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, employing Kaplan-Meier survival analyses, weighted Cox models, and restricted cubic splines to assess linear and nonlinear relationships between dietary minerals intake and all-cause mortality. Associations across different body mass index (BMI) categories were also evaluated separately. Results Over 6.25 years of median follow-up, 1,582 deaths were documented. Adjusted for potential covariates, results show a negative linear correlation between dietary magnesium intake and all-cause mortality (p for trend <0.001). Compared to the lowest quartile, all-cause mortality risk in the highest quartile was found to be 0.63 (95% CI 0.49-0.81). The associations between intake of the other eight dietary minerals and all-cause mortality were not robust. BMI significantly influenced the links between dietary minerals intake and all-cause mortality (p for interaction <0.05). Across BMI categories, significant negative associations were found between intake of magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, and copper and all-cause mortality in underweight or normal weight groups. In overweight individuals, intake of calcium, iron, magnesium, and potassium was negatively linked to all-cause mortality. For obese groups, sodium intake negatively affected all-cause mortality (p for trend <0.001). Conclusion Unlike other dietary minerals, increased magnesium intake significantly reduced all-cause mortality risk in ASCVD. BMI influenced the associations between dietary minerals intake and all-cause mortality.

Abstract
The impact of metal exposure on cardiovascular diseases has become an increasingly concerning topic. To date, few studies have investigated the relationship between the copper-to-zinc ratio and CVD (Cardiovascular disease). This China multi-ethnic cohort study explored the association between the copper-to-zinc ratio and CVD in Chinese adults. The study included a sample size of 9878 people. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the correlation between urinary copper, urinary zinc, and the copper-to-zinc ratio and CVD prevalence. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis was used to investigate the potential dose-response relationships among copper-to-zinc ratio, urinary copper, urinary zinc, and CVD prevalence. In addition, the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression method was used to identify significant risk factors associated with CVD, leading to the development of a nomogram. The predictive performance of the nomogram model for CVD was assessed using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and the area under the curve (AUC). Compared with the copper-to-zinc ratio in Q1, the copper-to-zinc ratio in Q4 was associated with CVD after adjusting for all potential confounders (Model 3) (Q4, odds ratio [OR] 0.608, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.416-0.889, P = 0.010). After adjusting for all potential confounders (Model 3), urinary copper levels in Q4 were associated with CVD (Q4, odds ratio [OR] 0.627, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.436-0.902, P = 0.012). No significant difference was found between urinary zinc levels and CVD. The RCS showed a linear dose-response relationship between the copper-to-zinc ratio and CVD (P for overall = 0.01). The nomogram based on the influencing factors examined with LASSO showed good predictive power, and the AUC was 76.3% (95% CI 73.7-78.9%). Our results suggest that there is a significant linear negative correlation between the copper-to-zinc ratio and CVD in Chinese adults and that it has good predictive value for CVD.

Abstract
Objective To explore the associations between dietary zinc intake and cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), including congestive heart failure (CHF), coronary heart disease (CHD), angina, heart attack, and cerebrovascular accident (CVA), this study was performed. Setting Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005-2018) were used in this study. Dietary zinc intake was stratified into quartiles. Restricted cubic splines were constructed to assess nonlinear associations and identify cut-off values based on the type of nonlinearity. Binary logistic regressions were performed using the cut-offs. Results Positive associations were detected between the second, third, and fourth quantiles of dietary zinc intake and decreased risks of overall CVDs (Q2: OR = 0.83, 95 % CI = 0.72-0.96; Q3: OR = 0.83, 95 % CI = 0.71-0.96; Q4: OR = 0.79, 95 % CI = 0.67-0.93). The second, third, and fourth quantiles were significantly associated with decreased risks of various CVDs (all P < 0.05), except for CHD and angina (all P > 0.05). Restricted cubic spline regression revealed significant nonlinear trends for associations of dietary zinc intake with the risk of developing CVDs and CHF (both P for nonlinear <0.05), whereas those for heart attack and CVA were marginally significant (P for nonlinear = 0.072, and 0.075, respectively). Conclusions This study revealed that high dietary zinc intake is associated with reduced risks of developing CVDs, CHF, heart attack, and CVA, but not CHD or angina.

Abstract
We aimed to explore the overall association between trace elements and cardiovascular disease (CVD) and its types in humans. A total of 5101 participants' blood samples from the 2011-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were included. Biochemical data were collected from laboratory tests conducted at mobile screening centers. After assessing linearity, weighted logistic regression estimated the association between trace elements and various CVD types. Weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression and quantile-based g-computation (Qgcomp) evaluated the overall relationship between biological trace elements and CVD types. After fully adjusting for confounding factors, the odds ratios of overall CVD morbidity corresponding to the second, third, and fourth quartiles of higher selenium (Se) concentration were 0.711 (95% CI, 0.529-0.956, p = 0.024), 0.734 (95% CI, 0.546-0.987, p = 0.041), and 0.738 (95% CI, 0.554-0.983, p = 0.038), respectively. Moreover, an increase in the concentration of copper (Cu) was associated with an increased risk of stroke (95% CI, 1.012-1.094, p = 0.01), heart failure (95% CI, 1.001-1.095, p = 0.046), and heart attack (95% CI, 1.001-1.083, p = 0.046). As the concentration of trace elements in the body increased, there was a significant positive association between Cu and CVD prevalence. On the other hand, Se and zinc were negatively associated with CVD prevalence. A nonlinear relationship between Se and CVD was found, and an appropriate Se intake may reduce the risk of CVD. Cu levels positively correlated with CVD risk. However, prospective cohort studies are warranted to confirm the causal effects of the micronutrients on CVD and its types.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Copper exposure is reported to be associated with increased risk of stroke. However, the association of copper exposure with subclinical carotid atherosclerosis remains unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS This observational study included consecutive participants from Xinqiao Hospital between May 2020 and August 2021. Blood metals were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and carotid atherosclerosis was assessed using ultrasound. Modified Poisson regression was performed to evaluate the associations of copper and other metals with subclinical carotid plaque presence. Blood metals were analyzed as categorical according to the quartiles. Multivariable models were adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, education, smoking, drinking, hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, estimated glomerular filtration rate, and coronary artery disease history. Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression was conducted to evaluate the overall association of metal mixture with subclinical carotid plaque presence. One thousand five hundred eighty-five participants were finally enrolled in our study, and carotid plaque was found in 1091 subjects. After adjusting for potential confounders, metal-progressively-adjusted models showed that blood copper was positively associated with subclinical carotid plaque (relative risk according to comparing quartile 4 to quartile 1 was 1.124 [1.021-1.238], relative risk according to per interquartile increment was 1.039 [1.008-1.071]). Blood cadmium and lead were also significantly associated with subclinical carotid plaque. Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression analyses suggested a synergistic effect of copper-cadmium-lead mixture on subclinical carotid plaque presence. CONCLUSIONS Our findings identify copper as a novel risk factor of subclinical carotid atherosclerosis and show the potential synergistic proatherogenic effect of copper, cadmium, and lead mixture.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Metals have been linked to a diverse spectrum of age-related diseases; however, the effects of metal exposure on health span remains largely unknown. This cohort study aims to determine the association between plasma metal and health span in elder adults aged ≥ 90 years. METHODS The plasma concentrations of seven metals were measured at baseline in 300 elder adults. The end of the health span (EHS) was identified as the occurrence of one of eight major morbidities or mortality events. We used Cox regression to assess hazard ratios (HR). The combined effects of multiple metal mixtures were estimated using grouped-weighted quantile sum (GWQS), quantile g-computation (Q-gcomp), and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) methods. RESULTS The estimated HR for EHS with an inter-quartile range (IQR) increment for selenium (Se) was 0.826 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.737-0.926); magnesium (Mg), 0.806 (95% CI: 0.691-0.941); iron (Fe), 0.756 (95% CI: 0.623-0.917), and copper (Cu), 0.856 (95% CI: 0.750-0.976). The P for trend of Se, Mg, and Fe were all < 0.05. In the mixture analyses, Q-gcomp showed a negative correlation with EHS (P = 0.904), with the sum of the negative coefficients being -0.211. CONCLUSION Higher plasma Se, Mg, and Fe reduced the risk of premature end of health span, suggesting that essential metal elements played a role in health maintenance in elder adults.

Abstract
The relationship between zinc (Zn) exposure and abnormal blood lipids including dyslipidemia is contentious. Serum uric acid (SUA) has been reported to be correlated to both Zn exposure and dyslipidemia. The underlying mechanisms of Zn exposure associated with blood lipids and the mediating effects of SUA remain unclear. Therefore, this study analyzed the data from Chinese 2110 adults (mean age: 59.0 years old) in rural areas across China to explore the associations of Zn exposure with blood lipid profiles and dyslipidemia, and to further estimate the mediating effects of SUA in these relationships. The study data showed that urinary Zn was associated with increased levels of blood lipid components triglyceride (TG) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Moreover, an increased risk of dyslipidemia was observed in the study participants who had higher urinary Zn levels. Compared with the first quartile, the fourth quartile of urinary Zn concentration corresponded to the increase of TG (β = 0.20, 95 % CI: 0.12, 0.28), LDL-C (β = 0.06, 95 % CI: 0.01, 0.10) and dyslipidemia risk (OR = 2.16, 95 % CI: 1.50, 3.10), respectively. Elevated urinary Zn was also associated with higher levels of SUA and hyperuricemia risk. The SUA levels were positively related to total cholesterol (TC), TG, LDL-C levels and dyslipidemia risk. Mediation analyses revealed that SUA mediated 31.75 %, 46.16 % and 19.25 % of the associations of urinary Zn with TG, LDL-C levels and dyslipidemia risk, respectively. The subgroup and sensitivity analyses confirmed the positive associations between urinary Zn and blood lipid profiles and the mediating effect of SUA. The national population-based study further enhanced our understanding of the associations between Zn exposure and blood lipid profiles and mediating effect of SUA among generally healthy, middle-aged, and elderly individuals.

Abstract
Associations between mineral intake and mortality in non-Western countries have not been studied adequately. This study evaluated these associations in the Golestan Cohort Study, featuring a Middle Eastern population. The mineral intake was estimated from the baseline food frequency questionnaire, adjusted by using the nutrient density method, and divided into quintiles. We used Cox proportional hazards models to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) for the mortality. We analyzed 41,863 subjects with a mean age of 51.46 ± 8.73 years at the baseline. During 578,694 person-years of follow-up (median: 14.1 Years), 7217 deaths were recorded. Dietary calcium intake was inversely associated with the all-cause mortality (HRQ5 vs. Q1 = 0.91, 95%CI = 0.85-0.99). We observed significant associations between calcium (HRQ5 vs. Q1 = 0.82, 95% CI = 0.73-0.93), copper (HRQ5 vs. Q1 = 1.11, 95% CI = 0.99-1.26), and selenium intake (HRQ5 vs. Q1 = 1.14, 95% CI = 1.01-1.29) and CVD mortality. Dietary phosphorus (HRQ5 vs. Q1 = 0.81, 95%CI = 0.69-0.96) and copper intake (HRQ5 vs. Q1 = 0.84, 95%CI = 0.71-0.99) were inversely associated with cancer mortality. In this study within a Middle Eastern population, a higher dietary intake of calcium exhibited an inverse association with all-cause mortality. Furthermore, nuanced associations were observed in the cause-specific mortality, suggesting potential avenues for dietary interventions and emphasizing the importance of considering dietary factors in public health strategies.

Abstract
Coronary ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury results from a blockage of blood supply to the heart followed by restoration of perfusion, leading to oxidative stress induced pathological processes. Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2), a master antioxidant transcription factor, plays a key role in regulating redox signaling. Over the past decades, the field of metallomics has provided novel insights into the mechanism of pro-oxidant and antioxidant pathological processes. Both redox-active (e.g. Fe and Cu) and redox-inert (e.g. Zn and Mg) metals play unique roles in establishing redox balance under IR injury. Notably, Zn protects against oxidative stress in coronary IR injury by serving as a cofactor of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase [Cu-Zn] (SOD1) and proteins such as metallothionein (MT) and KEAP1/NRF2 mediated antioxidant defenses. An increase in labile Zn2+ inhibits proteasomal degradation and ubiquitination of NRF2 by modifying KEAP1 and glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β) conformations. Fe and Cu catalyse the formation of reactive oxygen species via the Fenton reaction and also serve as cofactors of antioxidant enzymes and can activate NRF2 antioxidant signaling. We review the evidence that Zn and redox-active metals Fe and Cu affect redox signaling in coronary cells during IR and the mechanisms by which oxidative stress influences cellular metal content. In view of the unique double-edged characteristics of metals, we aim to bridge the role of metals and NRF2 regulated redox signaling to antioxidant defenses in IR injury, with a long-term aim of informing the design and application of novel therapeutics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Copper is an essential trace element in the human body; its relationship with cardio-cerebrovascular diseases (CCVDs) remains unclear. This study aimed to comprehensively investigate the association between circulating copper concentrations and CCVD risk and mortality. METHODS We searched the PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Knowledge databases for cohort studies reporting associations between circulating copper concentrations and cardiovascular diseases and mortality published up to August 23, 2023. Effect sizes were pooled using random-effects models. We graded the certainty of the evidence by the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation) framework. RESULTS Our analysis included 47,813 patients across 17 cohort studies. Elevated circulating copper levels were linked to the risk of stroke (OR = 1.52; 95% CI 1.30-1.78), coronary artery disease mortality (RR = 2.77; 95% CI 1.82-4.19), cardiovascular mortality (RR = 1.79; 95% CI 1.52-2.11), and all-cause mortality (RR = 1.56; 95% CI 1.35-1.79) but not the risk of acute myocardial infarction (RR = 2.01; 95% CI 0.63-6.47). Continuous analysis (per 20 μg/dl increase) showed consistent results regarding the association between copper levels and stroke incidence (OR = 1.23; 95% CI 1.14-1.33), cardiovascular mortality (HR = 1.28; 95% CI 1.07-1.53) and all-cause mortality (HR = 1.22; 95% CI 1.04-1.44). Except for the low certainty of evidence of acute myocardial infarction incidence, all outcomes had moderate certainty of evidence. CONCLUSION Excessive circulating copper levels are associated with stroke, coronary artery disease mortality, cardiovascular mortality, and all-cause mortality with moderate certainty.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous in vitro and animal experiments have shown that copper plays an important role in cardiovascular health. Dietary copper is the main source of copper in the human body and the association between dietary copper and cardiovascular disease remains unclear. Our study aimed to investigate the associations of dietary copper intake with the risk of major cardiovascular disease incidence, cardiovascular disease mortality, and all-cause mortality in Chinese adults. METHODS Our study is based on Prospective Urban Rural Epidemiology China (PURE-China), a large prospective cohort study of 47 931 individuals aged 35-70 years from 12 provinces in China. Dietary intake was recorded using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire designed specifically for the Chinese population. The daily intake of copper was obtained by multiplying the daily food intake with the nutrient content provided in the Chinese Food Composition Table (2002). Cox frailty proportional hazards models were developed to evaluate the association between dietary copper intake with mortality, major cardiovascular disease events, and their composite. RESULTS A total of 45 101 participants (mean age: 51.1 ± 9.7 years old) with complete information were included in the current study. The mean dietary copper intake was 2.6 ± 1.1 mg/d. During the 482 833 person-years of follow-up, 2 644(5.9%) participants died, 4 012(8.9%) developed new cardiovascular diseases, and 5 608(12.4%) participants experienced the composite endpoint. Compared with those in the first and second quartile of dietary copper intake, individuals in the third and fourth quantile had higher risk of composite outcomes, all-cause death, cardiovascular disease death, major cardiovascular disease and stroke occurrences. The associations remained similar in the subgroup and sensitivity analyses. CONCLUSIONS Our findings demonstrated that excessive dietary copper intake was associated with higher risks of death and cardiovascular diseases in Chinese adults. Further studies in populations with different dietary characteristics are needed to obtain dose-response relationships and to refine global dietary recommendations.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major cause of mortality and morbidity. Several studies have investigated the relationship between trace element status, including copper status, and CVDs in population studies; however, there are controversies about the role of dietary copper and CVD. We aimed to review the association between dietary copper intake with CVD and this association's related factors by reviewing both animal models and human studies. Some animal model studies have reported a strong relationship between dietary copper intake and atherogenesis based on the possible molecular pathways, whilst other studies have not confirmed this relationship. Human studies have not revealed a relationship between CVDs and dietary copper intake, but there is uncertainty about the optimal amount of dietary copper intake in relation reducing the risk of CVDs. These associations may be influenced by ethnicity, gender, underlying co-morbidities and the methods used for its measurement.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Copper (Cu) homeostasis and Cu-induced cell death are gaining recognition as crucial processes in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Circulating Cu associated with CVD and mortality is yet to be fully elucidated. OBJECTIVE This national prospective cohort study is to estimate relationship between serum Cu and the risk of CVD and all-cause mortality. METHODS This study included participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011-2016. Weighted Cox proportional hazards regression analysis and exposure-response curves were applied. RESULTS This included 5,412 adults, representing 76,479,702 individuals. During a mean of 5.85 years of follow-up (31,653 person-years), 96 CVD and 356 all-cause mortality events occurred. Age and sex-adjusted survival curves showed that individuals with higher levels of serum Cu experienced increased CVD and all-cause death rates (tertiles, p < 0.05). Compared with the participant in tertile 1 of serum Cu (< 16.31 mol/L), those in tertile 3 (≥ 19.84 mol/L) were significantly associated with CVD mortality (HR: 7.06, 95%CI: 1.85,26.96), and all-cause mortality (HR: 2.84, 95% CI: 1.66,4.87). The dose-response curve indicated a linear relationship between serum Cu and CVD mortality (p -nonlinear = 0.48) and all-cause (p -nonlinear = 0.62). A meta-analysis included additional three prospective cohorts with 13,189 patients confirmed the association between higher serum Cu and CVD (HR: 2.08, 95% CI: 1.63,2.65) and all-cause mortality (HR: 1.89, 95%CI: 1.58,2.25). CONCLUSION The present study suggests excessive serum Cu concentrations are associated with the risk of CVD and all-cause mortality in American adults. Our findings and the causal relationships require further investigation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Copper (Cu) is a component that performs a crucial role in the normal function and development of the human body. Nonetheless, it is still largely unclear how Cu consumption in the diet relates to the risk for all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. METHODS Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2001-2018 were used to conduct a prospective cohort study of individuals between the ages of 20 years and above. Regression coefficients and 95% confidence intervals for the link between dietary Cu consumption and all-cause and cardiovascular-related mortality were computed utilizing univariate and multivariate-adjusted Cox proportional hazards models. RESULTS A total of 197.9 million non-institutionalized American citizens were represented by the NHANES's 39,784 participants. The link between Cu in the diet and all-cause mortality was discovered to be non-linear in our restricted cubic spline regression models. When comparing the highest with the lowest quartile of Cu consumption in the diet, the weighted multivariate hazard ratios for all-cause mortality were 0.91 (0.83-0.99) for Q2, 0.88 (0.80-0.97) for Q3, and 0.86 (0.76-0.98) for Q4 (P for trend = 0.017). An identical trend was observed for cardiovascular mortality, but the association is not significant. CONCLUSION The most important discovery was that higher dietary Cu consumption was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality. This trend was also consistent with that of cardiovascular-related mortality, but the association is not significant.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Copper is an essential dietary element with a crucial role in physiological regulation. However, the relationship between dietary copper intake and abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) remains uncertain. METHODS AND RESULTS This study encompassed a cohort of 2535 adults aged over 40 years, derived from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2014. Dietary copper intake from both food sources and supplements was assessed through two 24-h dietary recall interviews. AAC was measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry and classified into 3 groups using the Kauppila score system. Multivariable logistic regression models were constructed to evaluate the association between dietary copper intake and AAC. Among the participants, a total of 771 individuals (30.4%) were diagnosed with AAC, of which 239 (9.4%) exhibited severe AAC. Higher dietary copper intake was significantly associated with a lower incidence of severe AAC. Specifically, for each 1 mg/day increase in dietary copper intake, the incidence of severe AAC decreased by 38% (odds ratios [OR] 0.62, 95% confidence intervals [CI] 0.39-0.98) after adjustment for relevant covariates. Moreover, individuals in the third tertile of copper intake had a 37% lower incidence of AAC compared to those in the first tertile [OR 0.63, 95% CI (0.43-0.95)]. However, no significant associations were found between supplemental copper intake or serum copper levels and AAC. CONCLUSIONS This study demonstrates that lower dietary copper intake, rather than serum copper levels or supplement copper intake, is significantly associated with a higher prevalence of AAC in adults ≥40 years old in the United States.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death worldwide, far ahead of cancer. Epidemiological data emphasize the participation of many risk factors that increase the incidence of CVDs, including genetic factors, age, and sex, but also lifestyle, mainly nutritional irregularities and, connected with them, overweight and obesity, as well as metabolic diseases. Despite the importance of cardiovascular problems in the whole society, the principles of prevention of CVDs are not widely disseminated, especially among the youngest. As a result, nutritional neglect, growing from childhood and adolescence, translates into the occurrence of numerous disease entities, including CVDs, in adult life. This review aimed to draw attention to the role of selected minerals and vitamins in health and the development and progression of CVDs in adults and children. Particular attention was paid to the effects of deficiency and toxicity of the analyzed compounds in the context of the cardiovascular system and to the role of intestinal microorganisms, which by interacting with nutrients, may contribute to the development of cardiovascular disorders. We hope this article will draw the attention of society and the medical community to emphasize promoting healthy eating and proper eating habits in children and adults, translating into increased awareness and a reduced risk of CVD.

Abstract
Background Despite the fact that several studies have investigated the association between serum copper levels (S-Cu) and the risk of cardiovascular diseases, this relationship remains unclear. The aims of this study were to investigate the association between S-Cu and risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE), including total stroke, ischemic stroke, hemorrhagic stroke, myocardial infarction and cardiovascular mortality, and identify potential sources of results heterogeneity. Methods We carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis. The selection criteria were: (1) Observational studies (cohort studies, case-control studies and hybrid studies); (2) Studies containing quantitative data about the relationship between S-Cu and risk of MACE; (3) Estimating association measures; and (4) Studies written in English, French or Spanish. Overall pooled Odds ratio (pOR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) of MACE for the highest vs. lowest S-Cu category were calculated using random-effects models. Results Sixteen studies with a total of 41,322 participants were included in the meta-analysis: 10 prospective cohort studies, 5 nested case-control studies and 1 case-control study. Comparing highest vs. lowest category, high S-Cu levels were associated with total stroke (pOR: 1.49, 95% CI 1.22-1.82; I2 = 0%, p = 0.54), myocardial infarction (pOR: 1.31, 95% CI 1.17-1.46; I2 = 0.0%, p = 0.92) and cardiovascular mortality (pOR: 1.60, 95% CI 1.39-1.86; I2 = 0.0%, p = 0.54). Subgroup analysis showed that studies with a hybrid design had higher risks for cardiovascular mortality (pOR: 3.42, 95% CI 1.98-5.92) and ischemic stroke (pOR: 1.54, 95% CI 1.30-1.83). Conclusion High S-Cu levels were associated with an increased risk of total stroke, myocardial infarction and cardiovascular mortality. Hybrid studies seems to modify the strength of the association between S-Cu and the risk of cardiovascular mortality and ischemic stroke. Abstract
Nanoparticles (NPs) have gained recognition for diagnosis, drug delivery, and therapy in fatal diseases. This review focuses on the benefits of green synthesis of bioinspired NPs using various plant extract (containing various biomolecules such as sugars, proteins, and other phytochemical compounds) and their therapeutic application in cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Multiple factors including inflammation, mitochondrial and cardiomyocyte mutations, endothelial cell apoptosis, and administration of non-cardiac drugs, can trigger the cause of cardiac disorders. Furthermore, the interruption of reactive oxygen species (ROS) synchronization from mitochondria causes oxidative stress in the cardiac system, leading to chronic diseases such as atherosclerosis and myocardial infarction. NPs can decrease the interaction with biomolecules and prevent the incitement of ROS. Understanding this mechanism can pave the way for using green synthesized elemental NPs to reduce the risk of CVD. This review delivers information on the different methods, classifications, mechanisms and benefits of using NPs, as well as the formation and progression of CVDs and their effects on the body.

Abstract
Background Observational studies have reported inconsistent associations between micronutrient levels and the risk of coronary artery disease (CAD) in diabetic patients. We aim to explore the causal association between genetically predicted concentrations of micronutrients (phosphorus, magnesium, selenium, iron, zinc, and copper) and CAD in patients with diabetes. Methods Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) connected to serum micronutrient levels were extracted from the corresponding published genome-wide association studies (GWASs). Summary-level statistics for CAD in diabetic patients were obtained from a GWAS of 15,666 patients with diabetes. The primary analysis was carried out with the inverse variance weighted approach, and sensitivity analyses using other statistical methods were further employed to assess the robustness of the results. Results Genetically predicted selenium level was causally associated with a higher risk of CAD in diabetic patients (odds ratio [OR]: 1.25; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.10-1.42; p = 5.01 × 10-4). While, genetically predicted iron concentrations in patients with diabetes were inversely associated with the risk of CAD (OR: 0.82; 95% CI: 0.75-0.90; p = 2.16 × 10-5). The association pattern kept robust in most sensitivity analyses. Nominally significant associations were observed for magnesium and copper with the risk of CAD in patients with diabetes. No consistent evidence was found for the causal associations between phosphorus and zinc levels, and the risk of CAD in patients with diabetes. Conclusion We provide consistent evidence for the causal effect of increased selenium and decreased iron levels on CAD in patients with diabetes, highlighting the necessity of micronutrient monitoring and application in these patients.

Abstract
The global prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) has increased in recent years. Adverse cardiovascular events have become the main cause of life-threatening events in patients with CKD, and vascular calcification is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Vascular calcification, especially coronary artery calcification, is more prevalent, severe, rapidly progressive, and harmful in patients with CKD. Some features and risk factors are unique to vascular calcification in patients with CKD; the formation of vascular calcification is not only influenced by the phenotypic transformation of vascular smooth muscle cells, but also by electrolyte and endocrine dysfunction, uremic toxin accumulation, and other novel factors. The study on the mechanism of vascular calcification in patients with renal insufficiency can provide a basis and new target for the prevention and treatment of this disease. This review aims to illustrate the impact of CKD on vascular calcification and to discuss the recent research data on the pathogenesis and factors involved in vascular calcification, mainly focusing on coronary artery calcification, in patients with CKD.

Abstract
Zinc is an important component of cellular antioxidant defenses and dysregulation of zinc homeostasis is a risk factor for coronary heart disease and ischemia/reperfusion injury. Intracellular homeostasis of metals, such as zinc, iron and calcium are interrelated with cellular responses to oxidative stress. Most cells experience significantly lower oxygen levels in vivo (2-10 kPa O2) compared to standard in vitro cell culture (18kPa O2). We report the first evidence that total intracellular zinc content decreases significantly in human coronary artery endothelial cells (HCAEC), but not in human coronary artery smooth muscle cells (HCASMC), after lowering of O2 levels from hyperoxia (18 kPa O2) to physiological normoxia (5 kPa O2) and hypoxia (1 kPa O2). This was paralleled by O2-dependent differences in redox phenotype based on measurements of glutathione, ATP and NRF2-targeted protein expression in HCAEC and HCASMC. NRF2-induced NQO1 expression was attenuated in both HCAEC and HCASMC under 5 kPa O2 compared to 18 kPa O2. Expression of the zinc efflux transporter ZnT1 increased in HCAEC under 5 kPa O2, whilst expression of the zinc-binding protein metallothionine (MT) decreased as O2 levels were lowered from 18 to 1 kPa O2. Negligible changes in ZnT1 and MT expression were observed in HCASMC. Silencing NRF2 transcription reduced total intracellular zinc under 18 kPa O2 in HCAEC with negligible changes in HCASMC, whilst NRF2 activation or overexpression increased zinc content in HCAEC, but not HCASMC, under 5 kPa O2. This study has identified cell type specific changes in the redox phenotype and metal profile in human coronary artery cells under physiological O2 levels. Our findings provide novel insights into the effect of NRF2 signaling on Zn content and may inform targeted therapies for cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
Background Although the association of zinc (Zn) with cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been studied, no consensus has been reached on this relationship, particularly dietary Zn intake. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of dietary Zn intake on the risk of CVD and to analyze whether this effect varied according to zinc consumption using representative data from China. Methods 11,470 adults from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) were eventually enrolled. The dietary information was collected by the 3 day 24-h dietary recalls combined with dietary weighting method. CVD was defined as participants with self-reported physician-diagnosed apoplexy and/or myocardial infarction during the follow-up. Cox regression was used to calculate the hazard ratios (HRs) of CVD with 95% confidence intervals. Restricted cubic spline function plus Cox regression was used to visualize the influence trend of dietary Zn intake on new-onset CVD and to test whether this trend is linear. 2-segment Cox regression was established to address the nonlinear trend. Results 431 participants developed CVD, including 262 strokes and 197 myocardial infarctions. Compared with the lowest quintile (Q1), the adjusted hazard ratios and 95% confidence interval (CI) of CVD in Q2 to Q5 of dietary Zn intake were 0.72 (0.54, 0.97), 0.59 (0.42, 0.81), 0.50 (0.34, 0.72) and 0.44 (0.27, 0.71), respectively. The influence trend of dietary Zn intake on new-onset CVD was nonlinear and L-shaped. When dietary Zn intake <13.66 mg/day, increased dietary Zn intake was significantly associated with decreased risk of developing CVD (HR = 0.87, 95% CI: 0.82-0.92, p-value <0.0001). Conclusion An L-shaped trend was observed between dietary Zn intake and the risk of developing CVD, indicating that dietary Zn intake should be improved moderately, but not excessively, for the benefit of cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
Copper is a vital mineral, and an optimal amount of copper is required to support normal physiologic processes in various systems, including the cardiovascular system. Over the past few decades, copper-induced cell death, named cuproptosis, has become increasingly recognized as an important process mediating the pathogenesis and progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD), including atherosclerosis, stroke, ischemia-reperfusion injury, and heart failure. Therefore, an in-depth understanding of the regulatory mechanisms of cuproptosis in CVD may be useful for improving CVD management. Here, we review the relationship between copper homeostasis and cuproptosis-related pathways in CVD, as well as therapeutic strategies addressing copper-induced cell death in CVD.

Abstract
The elderly is a group at particularly high cardiovascular risk. The coexistence of chronic diseases and use of multiple medications creates the need to look for non-pharmacological agents to improve cardiovascular health in that population. In view of reports on the potential role of zinc in enhancing pathways of myocardial tissue repair, the aim of this study was to evaluate the association between dietary zinc intake and cardiac structure and function in individuals of advanced age. The study group included 251 community-dwelling patients, with a median age of 80 years. Dieta 6.0 software was used for calculation of zinc consumption. Percentage of Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for zinc correlated with left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) (r = 0.196, p < 0.05), left ventricular mass index (r = -0.137, p < 0.05) and tricuspid annular plane systolic excursion (TAPSE) (r = 0.153, p < 0.05), while zinc density did so with E/E' ratio (r = -0.127, p < 0.05). In a multiple stepwise regression analysis, the best determinants of LVEF were %RDA for zinc (p = 0.014; β = 0.143), presence of coronary artery disease (p < 0.001; β = -0.39) and age (p = 0.036; β = -0.12). Furthermore, %RDA for zinc (p = 0.009; β = 0.16), female sex (p = 0.005; β = -0.171), beta-blocker use (p = 0.024; β = -0.136), body mass index (p = 0.008; β = 0.16) and heart rate (p = 0.0006; β = -0.209) had an independent effect on TAPSE. In conclusion, in individuals of very advanced age, lower zinc intake is associated with poorer cardiac function. Therefore, increasing the recommended zinc intake in this group deserves consideration.

Abstract
Previous studies have suggested a possible association among dietary zinc and vitamin B6 intake and CVD mortality and all-cause mortality. However, evidence on the association of dietary zinc and vitamin B6 intake and their interactions with CVD mortality and all-cause mortality remains unclear. This prospective study utilized data from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 1999 to 2016. After a median follow-up of 10.4 years, 4757 deaths were recorded among 36,081 participants. Higher dietary zinc intake levels (≥9.87 mg/day) were associated with lower CVD mortality (hazard ratio (HR) = 0.85, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.83−0.87). Vitamin B6 intake levels (≥1.73 mg/day) were associated with lower CVD mortality (HR = 0.91, 95% CI: 0.86−0.96) and all-cause mortality (HR = 0.91, 95% CI: 0.90−0.93). Higher dietary zinc intake and higher vitamin B6 intake were associated with a lower risk of CVD mortality, with an interaction between dietary zinc intake levels and vitamin B intake levels (LZLV group (HR, CI): 1.21,1.12−1.29; LZHV group (HR, CI): 1.42, 1.34−1.50; LZHV group (HR, CI): 1.28, 1.14−1.45; HZHV group (HR, CI): ref). There was also a J-type association (p for nonlinear < 0.001) between the dietary zinc−vitamin B6 ratio and CVD mortality, with a high dietary zinc−vitamin B6 ratio increasing the risk of CVD mortality (HR = 1.27, 95% CI: 1.19−1.35), whereas a moderate dietary zinc−vitamin B6 ratio appeared to be beneficial for CVD mortality. These results suggest that increasing the appropriate proportion of dietary zinc and vitamin B6 intake is associated with a lower risk of CVD mortality. Furthermore, precise and representative studies are needed to verify our findings.

Abstract
We aimed to investigate the association between dietary zinc intake and total deaths, cancer, and cardiovascular disease death. In this prospective, 10-year, community-based cohort analysis, data from 143,050 adult participants (aged 40 years and older) were analyzed. Dietary zinc intake at baseline was assessed using a food frequency questionnaire. Harrell’s C-index was used to determine the optimal cut-off of dietary zinc intake with the log-rank test. Using the Cox proportional hazards regression models, the association between dietary zinc intake and all-cause, cancer, and cardiovascular disease mortality was estimated using hazard ratios and 95% confidence intervals. During the mean 10.1 years of follow-up, 5436 participants expired, of whom 2355 died due to cancer and 985 died due to cardiovascular causes. After adjustment for confounders, dietary zinc intake was inversely associated with all-cause mortality (≤5.60 mg/day vs. >7.98 mg/day; hazard ratio, 1.13; 95% confidence interval, 1.01−1.25) and cardiovascular disease mortality (≤5.12 mg/day vs. >7.28 mg/day; hazard ratio, 1.42; 95% confidence interval, 1.11−1.81) but not with cancer mortality (≤5.60 mg/day vs. >10.08 mg/day; hazard ratio, 1.09; 95% confidence interval, 0.90−1.33). Dietary zinc intake was associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular disease mortality but not with cancer mortality. Our findings could suggest that recommending optimal dietary zinc intake is helpful for human health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Copper (Cu) is a component of enzymes catalyzing oxidation-reduction reactions. With the persisting burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD), there is evident need to identify biomarkers and potential risk factors for CVD. We therefore examined the association between serum Cu levels and the risk of CVD death in Finnish men and across different body mass index (BMI) categories. METHODS AND RESULTS This Finnish prospective study is based on 1911 men aged 42-60 years who were free of coronary heart disease at baseline. Cu concentrations (mg/l) were determined using atomic absorption spectrometer and categorized into quartiles (<1.0; 1 to <1.1; 1.1 to <1.21; ≥1.21). Participants were categorized into normal weight <25 kg/m2, pre-obesity 25-29.9 kg/m2, and obesity >30 kg/m2. The association between Cu and CVD death was analyzed using multivariable Cox regression models. During a median follow-up of 25.8 years, 358 CVD deaths occurred. The risk of CVD death increased continuously with increasing Cu levels (for non-linearity, p = 0.64). Using the first quartile as reference after adjustment for covariates, the hazard ratios (HR) (95% confidence interval (CI)) for CVD death for Cu concentrations in second, third and fourth quartiles were 1.45(1.05-2.01), 1.69(1.25-2.27), and 1.68(1.23-2.29), respectively. Obese men in the third quartile of serum Cu concentrations had highest risk of CVD death (HR (95%CI) 2.71(1.27-5.78)). CONCLUSION Elevated serum Cu level was associated with increased risk of CVD death across all BMI categories in middle-aged and older Finnish men. Serum Cu may have prognostic implication for CVD mortality risk; however, further studies are needed.

Abstract
Objectives Most studies have examined the association between serum copper and myocardial infarction, but there is little evidence of the association between dietary copper intake and myocardial infarction. Materials and methods The study included a total of 14,876 participants from the 2011 to 2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Multivariate logistic regression model was used to analyze the association between dietary copper intake and the risk of myocardial infarction. To reduce selection bias, we use nearest neighbor propensity score matching (PSM) in a 1:2 ratio. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) method is used to study the non-linear relationship. Subgroup stratification was used to further investigate the association between copper intake and myocardial infarction. Results The median dietary copper intake was 1.0825 mg/day. A myocardial infarction had occurred in approximately 4.4% (655) of the participants. Before and after matching, multivariate logistic regression models revealed a negative correlation between dietary copper intake and the risk of myocardial infarction. The higher quartile of subjects had a noticeably lower risk of myocardial infarction in comparison to those in the first quartile of copper intake. According to RCS findings, dietary copper intake and myocardial infarction have a non-linear and dose-response relationship. According to stratified analysis, the dietary copper intake was a substantial protective element for those who were ≥ 50 years old, female, 25 ≤BMI <30, with history of smoking, hypertension, diabetes and ortholiposis. Conclusion Increased dietary copper intake was associated with a lower risk of myocardial infarction. It is especially significant in elderly-aged women, overweight individuals, smokers, hypertension, and diabetic patients.

Abstract
Aim Coronary heart disease is a major cause of mortality in developed and developing countries. Changes in the trace element concentration in the human body are one of the main reasons for the transition of the human body from a healthy to a diseased state. In this meta-analysis, we have studied the relationship between the reduction in serum zinc ion concentration and coronary heart disease. Methods We used PubMed and Cochrane (as of June 30, 2021) databases for the literature search. Per the requirements of this systematic review, case-control studies involving serum zinc ion concentration and coronary heart disease were searched, and the quality of the included studies was evaluated before the meta-analysis. Results A total of 3,981 cases were found across seven articles. The standard mean deviation (SMD) of serum zinc ion concentration was −0.22 [−0.28, −0.15], z = 6.52, and P < 0.05 indicated that the difference was statistically significant. The forest plot results show that I2 = 34% < 50%, and the Q test showed P=0.17 > 0.1. These results suggest a lack of heterogeneity among the selected articles. Results from the funnel chart indicated that this study was free from publication bias. Conclusion The results of this meta-analysis reveal that a decrease in serum zinc ion concentration is related to the occurrence of coronary heart disease. Clinically, monitoring the serum zinc ion levels is proven to be of great significance for patients with coronary heart disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The simultaneous administration of drugs with food can compromise the bioaccessibility and absorption of nutrients. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of the use of losartan potassium (LP), metformin hydrochloride (MH), and simvastatin (S) on the in vitro bioaccessibility of micronutrients (Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn) in oat flour from Bahia, Brazil. METHODS The experimental procedure consisted of the in vitro extraction of the bioaccessible fraction of Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn in oat flour-with and without LP (50 mg), MH (500 mg), and S (20 mg)-using the unified bioaccessibility method (UBM), simulating the conditions of the gastrointestinal tract. For decomposition of the samples (oat flour and residue), a digester block with a closed system was used. To determine the total content (flour and residual fraction) and bioaccessible micronutrients, inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP OES) was used. RESULTS The bioaccessible contents (µg g-1) without the addition of drugs were: Cu 5.86 ± 0.21, Fe 32.80 ± 1.32, Mn 87.90 ± 1.90, and Zn 30.33 ± 2.05, with bioaccessibility ranging from 31.5 % for Fe to 99 % for Mn. The in vitro extraction method was validated by mass balance with recovery values from 89.78 % for Cu to 101.94 % for Mn. The range of bioaccessible contents (µg g-1) were: Cu (<4.14), Fe (32.10 ± 0.20-54.10 ± 2.03), Mn (81.40 ± 0.93-93.22 ± 0.80), and Zn (<10.80-29.11 ± 2.20). The estimation of the bioaccessibility of Cu, Mn, and Zn in oat flour were compromised in the presence of LP, MH, and S (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Chemical interactions can occur between drugs and micronutrients. Taken together, our results highlight that LP, MH, and S can interfere with the bioaccessibility of Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn in oat flour in patients who use these drugs, suggesting its rational use in further investigations.

Abstract
Coronary atherosclerosis is a potentially chronic circulatory condition that endangers human health. The biological cause underpinning cardiovascular disease is coronary atherosclerosis, and acute cardiovascular events can develop due to thrombosis, platelet aggregation, and unstable atherosclerotic plaque rupture. Coronary atherosclerosis is progressive, and three specific changes appear, with fat spots and stripes, atherosclerosis and thin-walled fiber atherosclerosis, and then complex changes in arteries. The progression and severity of cardiovascular disease are correlated with various levels of calcium accumulation in the coronary artery. The therapy and diagnosis of coronary atherosclerosis benefit from the initial assessment of the size and degree of calcification. This article will discuss the new progress in the early diagnosis of coronary atherosclerosis in terms of three aspects: imaging, gene and protein markers, and trace elements. This study intends to present the latest methods for diagnosing patients with early atherosclerosis through a literature review.

Abstract
Copper is a trace element necessary for the normal functioning of organisms, but excessive copper contents may be toxic to the heart. The goal of this study was to investigate the role of excessive copper accumulation in mitochondrial damage and cell apoptosis inhibition. In vivo, the heart copper concentration and cardiac troponin I (c-TnI) and N-terminal forebrain natriuretic peptide (NT-pro-BNP) levels increased in the copper-laden model group compared to those of the control group. Histopathological and ultrastructural observations revealed that the myocardial collagen volume fraction (CVF), perivascular collagen area (PVCA) and cardiomyocyte cross-sectional area (CSA) were markedly elevated in the copper-laden model group compared with the control group. Furthermore, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that the mitochondrial double-layer membrane was incomplete in the copper-laden model groups. Furthermore, cytochrome C (Cyt-C) expression was downregulated in mitochondria but upregulated in the cytoplasm in response to copper accumulation. In addition, Bcl-2 expression decreased, while Bax and cleaved caspase-3 levels increased. These results indicate that copper accumulation in cardiomyocyte mitochondria induces mitochondrial injury, and Cyt-C exposure and induces apoptosis, further resulting in heart damage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to metals/metalloids from both the natural environment and anthropogenic sources have a complex influence on human health. However, relatively few studies have explored the relations of exposure to multiple metals/metalloids with mortality. Therefore, this prospective study aims to examine the relations of multiple metal/metalloids exposures with all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. METHODS A total of 6155 participants within the Dongfeng-Tongji (DF-TJ) cohort were involved in this analysis, which were followed for mortality until December 31, 2018. We applied inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to measure baseline plasma concentrations of 23 metals. We utilized Cox regression models to calculate the hazard ratios (HRs) for all-cause and CVD mortality associated with metal concentrations. We proposed plasma metal score to assess the simultaneous exposure to multiple metals through summing each metal concentration weighted by the regression coefficients with all-cause mortality. RESULTS During the follow-up (mean duration, 9.8 years), we ascertained 876 deaths, including 416 deaths of CVD (157 deaths of coronary heart disease and 259 deaths of stroke). In the multiple-metals model, after adjusting for potential confounders, plasma copper, molybdenum, and vanadium were positively associated with all-cause mortality, whereas manganese, selenium, and thallium were negatively associated with the risk of all-cause mortality, with adjusted HRs (95% Confidence Interval, CI) of the fourth quartiles were 1.73 (1.42-2.11, P-trend < 0.001) for copper, 1.33 (1.09-1.63, P-trend = 0.005) for molybdenum, 1.43 (1.16-1.77, P-trend < 0.001) for vanadium, 0.74 (0.58-0.94, P-trend = 0.005) for manganese, 0.68 (0.56-0.83, P-trend < 0.001) for selenium, and 0.74 (0.59-0.92, P-trend = 0.002) for thallium, respectively. Positive associations were observed between plasma copper, molybdenum, vanadium concentrations and CVD mortality, whereas negative associations were found for plasma selenium and thallium concentrations with CVD mortality in the multiple-metals model. Compared with the first quartiles, the HRs of fourth quartiles were 1.94 (1.45-2.58, P-trend < 0.001) for copper, 1.72 (1.26-2.35, P-trend < 0.001) for molybdenum, 1.81 (1.32-2.47, P-trend < 0.001) for vanadium, 0.67 (0.50-0.89, P-trend = 0.003) for selenium, and 0.58 (0.41-0.81, P-trend < 0.001) for thallium, respectively. The plasma metal score was significantly associated with higher risks of all-cause and CVD death in dose-response fashions. When compared with the first quartiles of plasma metal score, the HRs of fourth quartiles were 2.16 (1.76-2.64; P-trend < 0.001) for all-cause mortality and 3.00 (2.24-4.02; P-trend < 0.001) for CVD mortality. CONCLUSIONS The study indicated that several plasma metals/metalloids were key determinants and predictors of all-cause and CVD death in the Chinese population. Our findings highlighted the importance to comprehensively assess and monitor multiple metals/metalloids exposures.

Abstract
Aortic dissection (AD) is a severe cardiovascular disease with a high mortality rate. However, the associations between the serum levels of metals and the risk of AD remain unclear. One hundred twenty-seven patients with AD (type A and B) identified from 2017 to 2019 at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University were included; 183 controls that were also included. A logistic regression analysis was performed to determine the associations between serum levels of metals and the risk of AD. Weighted Quantile Sum (WQS) regression and Bayesian Kernel Machine Regression (BKMR) analyses were performed to explore the effects of mixtures of metals on the risk of AD. A linear regression analysis was performed to evaluate the relationships between the serum levels of metals and the white blood cells (WBCs) count and serum lipid levels and blood glucose. We conducted a mediation analysis to explore the contribution rates of WBC counts or serum lipid levels and blood glucose to the association between metal levels and the risk of AD. Exposure to serum levels of Cu (coefficient = 6.33; 95 % CI = 2.52, 10.14; p trend < 0.001) were significantly and positively associated with the risk of AD. In the WQS analysis, Cu (50.3 %), Ni (32.7 %) and Mo (17.1 %) contributed to the AD risk. In the BKMR analysis, Cu and Mo were shown to play important roles in the association with the AD risk. Moreover, serum concentrations of Cu were significantly and inversely associated with HDL-cholesterol levels. HDL-cholesterol levels mediated 7.42 % of the association between serum Cu levels and the prevalence of AD. Our study provided the first evidence that serum levels of mixtures of metals are associated with the AD risk in a Chinese population. Increased concentrations of metals, particularly Cu, may increase the risk of AD by reducing HDL-cholesterol levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Despite zinc's role as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent, prospective studies relating zinc levels to ischemic stroke risk are lacking. To examine the association between serum zinc levels and incidence of ischemic stroke in a US population. METHODS Using a case-cohort study nested within the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke cohort, participants were randomly selected from the Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke cohort to generate a sub-cohort (n=2346). All incident ischemic stroke cases as of September 2012 (n=660) were included, with 62 incident cases overlapping in the sub-cohort. Serum zinc levels were measured at baseline. Barlow-weighted Cox's proportional hazards regression models were used to calculate multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios and the corresponding 95% CI of ischemic stroke by serum zinc levels. RESULTS The median zinc level for the sub-cohort was 121.19 µg/dL (interquartile range, 104.86-140.39 µg/dL). Serum zinc levels were inversely associated with incidence of ischemic stroke after adjustment for potential confounders (quartile 4 versus quartile 1: hazard ratio, 0.78 [95% CI, 0.61-0.98], P=0.03 for trend). When stratified by prespecified factors (sex, race, region), only sex showed a significant modification (P=0.03 for interaction). The inverse association was more pronounced among females (quartile 4 versus quartile 1: hazard ratio, 0.58 [95% CI, 0.41-0.84], P<0.01 for trend) than males (quartile 4 versus quartile 1: hazard ratio, 1.08 [95% CI, 0.78-1.51], P=0.92 for trend). CONCLUSIONS Serum zinc concentration was inversely associated with incidence of ischemic stroke, especially among women, indicating that low zinc levels may be a risk factor for ischemic stroke.

Abstract
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the most common cause of morbidity and mortality in developed countries. The prevalence of CVD is much higher in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), who may benefit from lifestyle changes, which include adapted diets. In this review, we provide the role of different groups of nutrients in patients with T2DM and CVD, as well as dietary approaches that have been associated with better and worse outcomes in those patients. Many different diets and supplements have proved to be beneficial in T2DM and CVD, but further studies, guidelines, and dietary recommendations are particularly required for patients with both diseases.

Abstract
Imbalances in trace element concentrations in the blood as a result of poor nutrition may affect the development of coronary heart disease. To study the relationship between zinc ion concentration in the peripheral blood and coronary heart disease, we performed multiple logistic regression and hierarchical analyses on blood measurements of 3541 patients. The experimental group comprised 1253 patients diagnosed with coronary heart disease, and the control group included 2288 healthy patients. The zinc ion concentrations were measured by a color rendering method, and the results were analyzed using SPSS software. Fifteen laboratory quality evaluation samples from the Clinical Laboratory Center of the Chinese Ministry of Health were selected for analysis. The mean values and average bias were calculated. The estimated qualified judgment standard was < 1/2 TEa (the allowable total error for zinc). A hierarchical analysis of risk factors, including smoking, age, sex, and menopause in women, was performed. The results revealed that non-smoking, aging (especially postmenopausal women), and low blood zinc concentrations were independent risk factors for the development of coronary heart disease (P ≤ 0.05, zinc ion concentration less than 13.82 ± 2.91). The findings strongly suggest that decreased zinc ion concentrations in the peripheral blood can be used as an independent risk factor for the prediction of coronary heart disease, especially in older patients, non-smokers, and women, in particular, postmenopausal women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE An effect of dietary carotenes on risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is uncertain. We aimed to investigate whether the association between dietary carotenes intake and risk of CVD mortality will persist after controlling for the intakes of potential cardioprotective dietary factors that correlate with dietary alpha- and/or beta-carotenes. METHODS AND RESULTS We followed up a total of 58,646 Japanese between 1988 and 1990 and 2009. We used a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) to determine the dietary intakes of carotenes, and estimated the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of CVD mortality in relation to carotene intake by the proportional hazard regression developed by David Cox. During 965,970 person-years of follow-up (median 19.3 years), we identified 3388 total CVD deaths. After adjusting for demographic and lifestyle factors, dietary intakes of alpha-carotene were significantly associated with the reduced risk of mortality from coronary heart disease (CHD); adjusted HR (95% CI) in the highest versus lowest quintiles of intake was 0.75 (0.58-0.96; P-trend = 0.02) and dietary intakes of beta-carotene were significantly associated with the reduced risk of mortality from CVD, CHD, and other CVD; adjusted HRs (95% CIs) were 0.88 (0.79-0.98; P-trend = 0.04), 0.78 (0.61-0.99; P-trend = 0.01), and 0.81 (0.67-0.98; P-trend = 0.04), respectively. However, after further adjusting for the dietary intakes of potassium, calcium, vitamins C, E, or K, these associations disappeared. CONCLUSIONS -Dietary alpha- and beta-carotene intakes were not associated with risk of CVD mortality after controlling for intakes of other potential cardioprotective nutrients.

Abstract
Zinc is generally considered to be one of the most promising materials to be used in biodegradable implants, and many zinc alloys have been optimized to improve implant biocompatibility, degradation, and mechanical properties. However, long-term degradation leads to the prolonged presence of degradation products, which risks foreign body reactions. Herein, we investigated the in vivo biocompatibility and degradation of a biodegradable Zn–Mg–Fe alloy osteosynthesis system in the frontal bone, mandible, and femur in beagles for 1 year. Results of the routine blood, biochemical, trace element, and histological analyses of multiple organs, peripheral blood CD4/CD8a levels, and serum interleukin 2 and 4 levels showed good biocompatibility of the Zn–Mg–Fe alloy. Zinc content analysis revealed zinc accumulation in adjacent bone tissue, but not in the liver, kidney, and spleen, which was related to the degradation of the Zn–Mg–Fe alloy. The alloy demonstrated a uniform slowing degradation rate in vivo. No degradation differences in the frontal bone, mandible, and femur were observed. The degradation products included zinc oxide [ZnO], zinc hydroxide [Zn(OH)2], hydrozincite [Zn5(OH)6(CO3)2], and hopeite [Zn3(PO4)2·4H2O]. The good biocompatibility and degradation properties of the Zn–Mg–Fe alloy render it a very attractive osteosynthesis system for clinical applications. Zn–Mg–Fe alloy possesses good biocompatibility. Zn–Mg–Fe alloy demonstrates a uniform slowing-down degradation rate in vivo. No degradation differences are observed in different sites, which supports the design of degradable osteosynthesis systems. The degradation products are zinc oxide, zinc hydroxide, hydrozincite, and hopeite. Zn–Mg–Fe alloy is a promising candidate for an osteosynthesis system.

Abstract
Background: In recent years, trace elements (TEs) have gained considerable attention in the course of treatment and diagnosis of ischemic stroke. The purpose of the conducted research was to determine the trace mineral status (Se, Cu, Zn, Cu/Zn ratio, and Cu/Se ratio) in patients with acute ischemic stroke compared to the population of healthy people in the northeastern region of Poland. Materials and methods: 141 patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) and 69 healthy control subjects were examined. The serum concentrations of mineral components were assessed by the atomic absorption spectrometry method. Clinical parameters were updated based on medical records. Results: The serum Se and Zn concentrations were significantly decreased (p < 0.0001; p < 0.0001) in patients with AIS compared with healthy control subjects. However, no significant differences were revealed in terms of the serum Cu concentration (p = 0.283). As expected, we found that the serum Cu/Zn and Cu/Se molar ratios were significantly higher (p = 0.001; p < 0.0001) in patients with AIS compared with healthy control subjects. Conclusions: Disturbed metal homeostasis is a significant contributor to AIS pathogenesis. Furthermore, marked disruption of the serum Cu/Zn and Cu/Se molar ratios could serve as a valuable indicator of AIS patients’ nutritional status and oxidative stress levels.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown links between heavy metals and many health issues. However, data on the association between heavy metals and mortality in the general population are still limited. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between heavy metals and overall mortality in the general population. We enrolled 2497 participants (1001 males and 1496 females) living in southern Taiwan, and measured levels of seven heavy metals: lead (Pb) in blood and cadmium (Cd), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn) and arsenic (As) in urine. The median follow-up period was 41.8 (4-50) months, during which 40 (1.6%) patients died. Compared to the participants who survived, those who died had higher urine Cd, higher urine Cu and lower urine Mn levels. Multivariate analysis showed that high urine Cd (per 1 μg/L; hazard ratio [HR], 1.352; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.089-1.680; p = 0.006), high urine Cu (per 1 μg/dL; HR, 1.350; 95% CI, 1.151-1.583; p < 0.001), and low urine Mn (per 1 μg/L; HR, 0.717; 95% CI, 0.557-0.923; p = 0.010) were associated with increased overall mortality. In conclusion, our results demonstrated that high levels of urine Cd and Cu and low urine Mn level were associated with increased overall mortality in the general population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With the rising incidence of chronic diseases, and the increase of aging population has led to multimorbidity a serious public health problem. The aim of this study was to explore the association between metal exposures and Charlson comorbidity index (CCI), which will provide valuable information for improving quality of life and reducing mortality. METHODS The study sample consists of three continuous cycles (2011-2016) of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), and 4901 eligible subjects were included in the study. Zero-inflated negative binomial (ZINB) model was utilized to investigate the effects in metal exposures on CCI, which includes spot urine (arsenic, mercury, and cadmium), whole blood (manganese, selenium, and lead), and serum (copper and zinc). RESULTS In count part (CCI ≥ 0), holding other variables constant, the expected change in CCI for a one-unit increase in blood selenium is 0.997 (RR = 0.997, p = 0.017). In logit part (CCI = 0), the log odds of having CCI equals zero would increase by 0.659, 1.073, and 0.963 for every additional urinary cadmium (OR = 0.659, p = 0.007), blood lead (OR = 1.073, p = 0.023), blood manganese (OR = 0.963, p = 0.025), respectively. CONCLUSIONS Our findings indicated that cadmium and manganese were likely to increase mortality. Inversely, selenium and lead might be positive on people's health. The findings may be extremely essential for preventing diseases and improving life quality.

Association of Zinc Deficiency with Development of CVD Events in Patients with CKD. Nutrients 2021; 13:nu13051680. Abstract
Deficiency of the micronutrient zinc is common in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The aim of this review is to summarize evidence presented in literature for consolidation of current knowledge regarding zinc status in CKD patients, including those undergoing hemodialysis. Zinc deficiency is known to be associated with various risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD), such as increased blood pressure, dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes mellitus, inflammation, and oxidative stress. Zinc may protect against phosphate-induced arterial calcification by suppressing activation of nuclear factor kappa light chain enhancer of activated B. Serum zinc levels have been shown to be positively correlated with T50 (shorter T50 indicates higher calcification propensity) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus as well as those with CKD. Additionally, higher intake of dietary zinc was associated with a lower risk of severe abdominal aortic calcification. In hemodialysis patients, the beneficial effects of zinc supplementation in relation to serum zinc and oxidative stress levels was demonstrated in a meta-analysis of 15 randomized controlled trials. Thus, evidence presented supports important roles of zinc regarding antioxidative stress and suppression of calcification and indicates that zinc intake/supplementation may help to ameliorate CVD risk factors in CKD patients.

Abstract
Background: Few studies have explored the impact of ischemic and non-ischemic etiologies of heart failure and other factors associated with heart failure on zinc and copper status. This study examined zinc and copper status in 80 outpatients with ischemic (n = 36) and non-ischemic (n = 44) heart failure and associations with biodemographic, clinical, biochemical, and nutritional parameters.Materials: Biomarkers of plasma zinc and copper, copper-zinc ratio, 24-h urinary zinc excretion, ceruloplasmin, and dietary intake of zinc and copper were assessed. Plasma zinc and copper and urinary zinc were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).Results: Patients with ischemic heart failure showed lower dietary zinc intake and higher dietary copper intake (both p = 0.02). Zinc and copper in plasma, copper-zinc ratio, ceruloplasmin, and 24-h urinary zinc excretion showed no statistical differences between the groups (all p ≥ 0.05). An inverse association was found between age (β =-0.001; p = 0.005) and the use of diuretics (β = -0.047; p = 0.013) and plasma zinc. Copper levels in plasma (β = 0.001; p < 0.001), and albumin (β = 0.090; p<0.001) were directly associated with plasma zinc. A positive association was found between ceruloplasmin (β = 0.011; p < 0.001), gamma-glutamyl transferase (β = 0.001; p < 0.001), albumin (β = 0.077; p = 0.001), and high-sensitivity c-reactive protein (β = 0.001; p = 0.024) and plasma copper.Conclusion: Zinc and copper biomarkers in clinically stable patients with heart failure did not seem to be responsive to the differences in zinc and copper intake observed in this study, regardless of heart failure etiology. The predictors of plasma zinc and copper levels related to oxidative stress and inflammation should be monitored in heart failure clinical practice.
