Abstract
This study examined the effects of resistance training (RT), Tai Chi (TC) and combination intervention (RT & TC) on the oxidative stress, blood glucose and lipid metabolism and quality of life of elderly patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Ninety-four elderly patients with T2DM were randomly divided into an RT group (RTG, n = 23), TC group (TCG, n = 24), combination intervention group (CIG, n = 24) and control group (CG, n = 23). All participants were given nutrition and medication. On this basis, RTG, TCG and CIG were administered for 24 weeks (3 times/week, 40 minutes/time). Observation indicators were malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), 8-hydroxy-2 deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), postprandial plasma glucose (PPG), haemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) and diabetes specific quality of life (DSQL). RT, TC and joint intervention can reduce the oxidative stress damage on elderly patients with T2DM to different degrees, control the levels of blood sugar and blood lipid and improve the quality of life. Compared with single intervention, combination intervention can further reduce the level of oxidative stress but has no additional benefits on blood glucose and lipid control and quality of life.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Depression is the most common psychological disorder in patients with type 1 diabetes (T1D). However, the characteristics of microbiota and metabolites in these patients remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate microbial and metabolomic profiles and identify novel biomarkers for T1D with depression. METHODS A case-control study was conducted in a total of 37 T1D patients with depression (TD+), 35 T1D patients without depression (TD-), and 29 healthy controls (HCs). 16S rRNA gene sequencing and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) metabolomics analysis were conducted to investigate the characteristics of microbiota and metabolites. The association between altered microbiota and metabolites was explored by Spearman's rank correlation and visualized by a heatmap. The microbial signatures to discriminate TD+ from TD- were identified by a random forest (RF) classifying model. RESULTS In microbiota, 15 genera enriched in TD- and 2 genera enriched in TD+, and in metabolites, 14 differential metabolites (11 upregulated and 3 downregulated) in TD+ versus TD- were identified. Additionally, 5 genera (including Phascolarctobacterium, Butyricimonas, and Alistipes from altered microbiota) demonstrated good diagnostic power (area under the curve [AUC] = 0.73; 95% CI, 0.58-0.87). In the correlation analysis, Butyricimonas was negatively correlated with glutaric acid (r = -0.28, p = 0.015) and malondialdehyde (r = -0.30, p = 0.012). Both Phascolarctobacterium (r = 0.27, p = 0.022) and Alistipes (r = 0.31, p = 0.009) were positively correlated with allopregnanolone. CONCLUSIONS T1D patients with depression were characterized by unique profiles of gut microbiota and serum metabolites. Phascolarctobacterium, Butyricimonas, and Alistipes could predict the risk of T1D with depression. These findings provide further evidence that the microbiota-gut-brain axis is involved in T1D with depression.

Abstract
Background Trace elements play an important role in reflecting physical metabolic status, but have been rarely evaluated in diabetes ketoacidosis (DKA). Since clinical biochemical parameters are the first-line diagnostic data mastered by clinical doctors and DKA has a rapid progression, it is crucial to fully utilize clinical data and combine innovative parameters to assist in assessing disease progression. The aim of this study was to evaluate the levels of trace elements in DKA patients, followed by construction of predictive models combined with the laboratory parameters. Methods A total of 96 T1D individuals (48 DKA patients) were collected from the First Hospital of Jilin University. Serum calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe) and selenium (Se) were measured by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry, and the data of biochemical parameters were collected from the laboratory information system. Training and validation sets were used to construct the model and examine the efficiency of the model. The lambda-mu-sigma method was used to evaluate the changes in the model prediction efficiency as the severity of the patient's condition increases. Results Lower levels of serum Mg, Ca and Zn, but higher levels of serum Fe, Cu and Se were found in DKA patients. Low levels of total protein (TP), Zn and high levels of lipase would be an efficient combination for the prediction of DKA (Area under curves for training set and validation set were 0.867 and 0.961, respectively). The examination test confirmed the clinical applicability of the constructed models. The increasing predictive efficiency of the model was found with NACP. Conclusion More severe oxidative stress in DKA led to further imbalance of trace elements. The combination of TP, lipase and Zn could predict DKA efficiently, which would benefit the early identification and prevention of DKA to improve prognosis.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a worldwide public health issue with numerous complications. Several risk factors are associated with diabetes, mainly due to patients following an unhealthy lifestyle. Copper is a crucial trace element, with various physiological actions. Different intake levels of copper might contribute to diabetes development due to its dual action as both an anti- and pro-oxidant. Aim: Due to the inconclusive findings regarding the relationship between copper consumption and the management of diabetes, we decided to conduct this extensive systematic review. Up to this date, no similar study has been available in the literature. In this review, we used the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Relevant articles were identified by searching the electronic databases CINAHL, EMBASE and Medline from their respective index dates to September 2022 using keywords such as “Copper Intake” and “Type 2 Diabetes”. Any paper that has investigated copper exposure through supplementation or any other method that indicates copper intake in human subjects with type 2 diabetes and measures at least one of the outcomes of interest related to diabetes was included in this review. This review is comprised of 4 cross-sectional studies, 3 cohort studies, 2 RCTs, and 2 interventional studies. Two cohort studies found positive associations between copper intake and the risk of developing T2DM, while no significant association was found in the third study. Regarding diabetes outcomes in the four cross-sectional studies, two found inverse associations, one found a positive relationship, and one found no significant association. In interventional studies, all studies found a protective effect of copper, including the RCT, while one found no significant association. The results are inconsistent concerning the association between copper consumption and the likelihood of developing diabetes are inconsistent. Individuals should receive an adequate dietary amount of copper that is within the RDA levels (900 µg/day) to avoid copper deficiency or toxicity. Further studies, especially RCTs, are strongly needed to enable researchers to elucidate more robust conclusions regarding this association.

Abstract
The effect of selenium on diabetes is significant. As pharmaceutical chaperones, tauroursodeoxycholic acid (TUDCA) and 4-phenylbutyric acid (4-PBA) can effectively improve the oxidative stress of the endoplasmic reticulum. This study established a mice model with type 1 diabetes (T1D) to evaluate the effects of pharmaceutical chaperones on selenium distribution. Streptozotocin was used to induce Friend virus B-type mice to establish a T1D mice model. Mice were administered with TUDCA or 4-PBA. Selenium levels in different tissues were measured by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). After treatment with TUDCA and 4-PBA, related laboratory findings such as glucose and glycated serum protein were significantly reduced and were closer to normal levels. At 2 weeks, 4-PBA normalized selenium levels in the heart, and 4-PBA and TUDCA maintained the selenium in the liver, kidney, and muscle at normal. At 2 months, 4-PBA and TUDCA maintained the selenium in the heart, liver, and kidney at normal levels. The serum selenium had a positive correlation with zinc and copper in the diabetes group and the control group, while the serum selenium had no significant association with magnesium and calcium at 2 weeks and 2 months. TUDCA and 4-PBA have crucial effects on selenium distribution in diabetic mice, and further research is needed to research their internal mechanisms.

Abstract
Occupational exposure to lead (Pb) continues to be a serious public health concern and may pose an elevated risk of genetic oxidative damage. In Brazil, car battery manufacturing and recycling factories represent a great source of Pb contamination, and there are no guidelines on how to properly protect workers from exposure or to dispose the process wastes. Previous studies have shown that Pb body burden is associated with genetic polymorphisms, which consequently may influence the toxicity of the metal. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of Pb exposure on DNA oxidative damage, as well as the modulation of hemochromatosis (HFE) polymorphisms on Pb body burden, and the toxicity of Pb, through the analysis of 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), in subjects occupationally exposed to the metal. Male Pb-exposed workers (n = 236) from car battery manufacturing and recycling factories in Brazil participated in the study. Blood and plasma lead levels (BLL and PLL, respectively) were determined by ICP-MS and urinary 8-OHdG levels were measured by LC-MS/MS, and genotyping of HFE SNPs (rs1799945, C → G; and 1800562, G → A) was performed by TaqMan assays. Our data showed that carriers of at least one variant allele for HFE rs1799945 (CG + GG) tended to have higher PLL than those with the non-variant genotype (β = 0.34; p = 0.043); further, PLL was significantly correlated with the levels of urinary 8-OHdG (β = 0.19; p = 0.0060), while workers that carry the variant genotype for HFE rs1800562 (A-allele) showed a prominent increase in 8-OHdG, as a function of PLL (β = 0.78; p = 0.046). Taken together, our data suggest that HFE polymorphisms may modulate the Pb body burden and, consequently, the oxidative DNA damage induced by the metal.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a metabolic and multifactorial disease in which inflammatory markers, oxidative stress, and certain trace elements seem to have an essential role. This study investigated the relationship between serum selenium and copper level with inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress in T2DM.In this case-control study, 30 patients with T2DM and 30 healthy individuals were selected. Serum levels of copper and selenium were measured by atomic absorption spectrometry, and TNF-α and IL-6 and oxidative stress markers were measured by ELISA. The SPSS v.22 was used for data analysis and the significance level is less than 5%.The mean age of patients was 52.9 ± 10.4 years, and the control group was 48.5 ± 10.4 years. In this study, 53.3% were female, and 46.7% were male. The levels of BMI (p = 0.002), systolic pressure (p = 0.034), insulin, selenium, malondialdehyde, and glutathione peroxidase (p = 0.0001; each), insulin resistance, copper, and superoxide dismutase, IL6, and TNF-α (p = 0.001; each) in T2DM were significantly higher than the control group. While levels of lipid profile, uric acid, creatinine, and diastolic pressure were not significantly different between the two groups. Selenium and copper are related to insulin resistance, and their increasing levels are associated with increased levels of markers of oxidative stress and inflammatory cytokines (p < 0.05).Increased levels of copper and selenium are associated with T2DM and this increase is also associated with increased levels of TNF-α, IL-6, and oxidative stress in T2DM. Therefore, controlling these markers can lead us to control this disease better.

Abstract
AIMS Female sub-fertility, a prominent complication due to Type 1 diabetes (T1D), is generally attributed to disturbances in menstrual cycles and/or ovarian defects/disorders. T1D women, however, are high in oxidative stress, although the impact of the same on their reproduction and associated events remains unknown. Therefore, we assessed the repercussions of elevated oxidative stress on the sperm fate (storage/utilization) in the reproductive tract milieu of T1D females and their fertility using the Drosophila T1D model (Df[dilp1-5]), which lacks insulin-like peptides and displays reduced female fertility. MAIN METHODS We mated Df[dilp1-5] females to normal males and thereafter examined sperm storage and/or utilization in conjunction with oxidative stress parameters in mated Df[dilp1-5] females at different time points. Also, the impact of antioxidant (Amla or Vitamin C) supplementation on the above oxidative stress parameters in Df[dilp1-5] females and the consequences on their sperm and fertility levels were examined. KEY FINDINGS Df[dilp1-5] females showed elevated oxidative stress parameters and a few of their reproductive tract proteins are oxidatively modified. Also, these females stored significantly fewer sperm and also did not utilize sperm as efficiently as their controls. Surprisingly, amelioration of the oxidative stress in Df[dilp1-5] females' milieu through antioxidant (Amla or vitamin C) supplementation enhanced sperm storage and improved fertility. SIGNIFICANCE Hyperglycemia coupled with elevated oxidative stress within the female reproductive tract environment affects the sperm fate, thereby reducing female fertility in T1D. In addition, these findings suggest that antioxidant supplementation may substantially aid in the mitigation of sub-fertility in T1D females.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Type 1 diabetes (T1D) exhibited sex-specific metabolic status including oxidative stress with dynamic change of trace elements, which emphasized the importance of the evaluation of trace elements according to sex. Besides, the most significant characteristic, insulin auto-antibodies, could not be found in all T1D patients, which needed the auxiliary prediction of clinical parameters. And it would benefit the early detection and treatment if some high-risk groups of T1D could predict and prevent the occurrence of disease through common clinical parameters. Hence, there was an urgent need to construct more effective and scientific statistical prediction models to serve clinic better. This study aimed to evaluate the sex-specific levels of trace elements and the relationship between trace elements and clinical parameters in T1D, and construct sex-specific auxiliary prediction model combined with trace elements and clinical parameters. METHODS A total of 105 T1D patients with negative insulin auto-antibodies and 105 age/sex-matched healthy individuals were enrolled in First Hospital of Jilin University. Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry was performed for the measurement of calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), selenium (Se) in the serum, and the data of clinical parameters were received from medical record system. The lambda-mu-sigma method was used to evaluate the relationship between abnormal clinical parameters and trace elements. Training set and validation set were divided for the construction of predictable models in males and females: clinical parameters model, trace element model and the combined model (clinical parameters and trace elements). Goodness fit test, decision curve analysis and other related statistical methods were used to perform data analysis. RESULTS Lower levels of Mg, Ca, Fe in the serum were found in T1D population in females compared with healthy population, while levels of Fe, Zn and Cu of serum in T1D individuals were higher than those of healthy population in males. Levels of serum Mg, Fe and Cu in T1D group were found with significant sex difference for (P < 0.05), and the levels of Fe and Cu in serum of males were higher than those of females, level of serum Mg in males was lower than those of females. Levels of serum Mg and Zn showed fluctuation trend with increased numbers of abnormal clinical parameters (NACP) in males. Serum Zn in females showed consistent elevated trend with NACP; serum Se increased first and then decreased with NACP in males and females. The auxiliary prediction model (Triglyceride, Total protein, serum Mg) was found with the highest predicted efficiency in males (AUC=0.993), while the model in females (Apolipoprotein A, Creatinine, Fe, Se, Zn/Cu ratio) showed the best predicted efficiency (AUC=0.951). The models had passed the verification in validation set, and Chi-square goodness-of-fit test, DCA results both confirmed their satisfactory clinical applicability. CONCLUSION Sex-specific difference were found in serum Mg, Fe and Cu in T1D. The combination of triglyceride, total protein and serum Mg for males, and apolipoprotein A, creatinine, Fe, Se, Zn/Cu ratio for females could effectively predict T1D in patients with negative anti-bodies, which would provide alarm for the population with high-risk of T1D and serve the T1D prediction in patients with negative anti-bodies.

Abstract
Several hormones and elements are involved in the homeostasis of glucose metabolism during pregnancy. This present study determined the differences among the factors involved in glucose regulation for pregnant women with and without an abnormal glucose challenge test (GCT), but without gestational diabetes mellitus, during the second trimester of gestation and the postpartum period. One hundred and six pregnant women who had received routine prenatal and postpartum examinations at our hospital were recruited. Sugar-related tests and the levels of pregnancy-associated hormones and 25-OH-vitamin D were performed using a clinical autoanalyzer; six elements were assessed using graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry or inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The women in the abnormal GCT group (n = 27) featured significantly higher levels of 25-OH-vitamin D (p = 0.006) and copper (p < 0.001) than those in the normal GCT group (n = 79). After adjusting for possible pregnancy factors, abnormal GCT remained the significant contributing factor for the elevated levels of 25-OH-vitamin D and copper during gestation (p = 0.046 and 0.002, respectively). Furthermore, significant positive correlations existed between 25-OH-vitamin D and glucose after a 50-g GCT (p = 0.001), 25-OH-vitamin D and HbA1C (p = 0.004), serum copper and glucose after a 50-g GCT (p = 0.003), and serum copper and HbA1C (p < 0.001). We conclude that blood 25-OH-vitamin D and copper are strongly correlated with glucose levels during gestation; these two factors are potential clinical predictors for maternal impaired glucose tolerance and, indirectly, for reducing perinatal risks and neonatal complications.

Abstract
AIMS/INTRODUCTION We aimed to study the relationships among the copper (Cu)/zinc (Zn) ratio, inflammatory biomarkers, and the prevalence of diabetic kidney disease (DKD) in patients with type 2 diabetes. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was performed on 651 patients with type 2 diabetes. DKD was defined as a urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio of ≥30 mg/g creatinine and/or an estimated glomerular filtration rate using cystatin C of < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2 . Areas under the curves (AUCs), cutoff values, and thresholds for detecting DKD were determined for the Cu/Zn ratio, soluble tumor necrosis factor-α receptor 1 (sTNFαR1), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP). Patients were categorized by each cutoff value of sTNFαR1 and the Cu/Zn ratio. Odds ratios (ORs) and biological interactions for the prevalence of DKD were determined. RESULTS DKD was identified in 220 patients. AUC/optimal cutoff values were 0.777/1300 pg/mL for sTNFαR1, 0.603/1.1648 for the Cu/Zn ratio, and 0.582/305 ng/mL for hsCRP. The ORs for DKD were higher, but not significantly, in the sTNFαR1 < 1300 and Cu/Zn ≥ 1.1648 group, significantly higher in the sTNFαR1 ≥ 1300 and Cu/Zn < 1.1648 group (P < 0.0001), and further synergistically elevated in the sTNFαR1 ≥ 1300 and Cu/Zn ≥ 1.1648 group (P < 0.0001) compared with the sTNFαR1 < 1300 and Cu/Zn < 1.1648 group after multivariable adjustment. Levels of sTNFαR1 were significantly higher in the sTNFαR1 ≥ 1300 and Cu/Zn ≥ 1.1648 group than in the sTNFαR1 ≥ 1300 and Cu/Zn < 1.1648 group (P = 0.0006). CONCLUSIONS Under an inflammatory initiation signal of elevated serum sTNFαR1 levels, an increase in the Cu/Zn ratio may further exacerbate inflammation and is synergistically associated with a high prevalence of DKD in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
Wound healing is a complex, highly regulated process that is important in sustaining the skin barrier function. The etiologic relation of specific metals is not adequately described for chronic non-healing wounds. The aim of this study was to estimate heavy and trace metals in chronic non-healing wound and their association with wound healing. The levels of zinc, selenium, copper, magnesium, chromium, cadmium, iron, and lead were estimated in serum of chronic non-healing wound patients using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The tests were carried out in 50 patients with chronic non-healing wound and thirty healthy volunteers as control. The serum levels of elements namely zinc, selenium, copper, magnesium, and chromium were significantly reduced in chronic non-healing wounds (P < .001) as compared to control. Lead and cadmium levels had shown the significantly increasing trend in chronic non-healing wound cases (P < .001). The present study demonstrated a significant decrease in serum, levels of selenium, zinc, copper, magnesium, iron, and chromium levels in patients with chronic non-healing wound indicating an association between these elements and wound healing. To summarize the findings of our research, hence trace elements were decreasing in chronic non-healing wound patients suggesting their role in wound healing.

Abstract
PURPOSE We investigated the impacts of plasma levels of magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), selenium (Se), and chromium (Cr) on GDM risk and the potential mediation effect of blood glucose levels on the relationship between trace elements and GDM risk. METHODS This nested case-control study was based on data from a birth cohort study conducted in Wuhan, China in 2013-2016. A total of 305 GDM cases and 305 individually-matched controls were included in the study. Conditional logistic regression models were used to estimate the associations between plasma trace element concentrations and GDM risk. A mediation analysis was conducted to explore whether blood glucose levels act as a mediator between trace element levels and GDM risk. RESULTS An IQR increment in plasma levels of Fe and Cu was associated with a significant increase in GDM risk [OR = 2.04 (95 % CI 1.62, 2.57) and OR = 1.52 (95 % CI 1.25, 1.82)], respectively. On the other hand, an IQR increment in plasma levels of Zn and Ca was associated with a significant decrease in GDM risk [OR = 0.55 (95 % CI 0.43, 0.71) and OR = 0.72 (95 % CI 0.56, 0.92)], respectively. The mediation analysis showed significant mediation of the association between Cu and GDM risk via the FBG (%mediated: 19.27 %), 1 h-PBG (12.64 %), 2h-PBG (28.44 %) pathways. CONCLUSIONS Plasma levels of Zn and Ca were negatively associated with GDM risk, while Fe and Cu were positively associated. Blood glucose levels act as a mediator between plasma trace element exposures and GDM risk.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was investigation of tissue trace element distribution in a streptozotocin model of DM1 in rats. DM1 was modeled in 2-month-old male Wistar rats (n = 30) using intraperitoneal injection of 45 mg/kg b.w. (STZ1) and 55 mg/kg b.w. streptozotocin (STZ2), whereas control animals were injected with physiological saline. The rats were subjected to oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and HbA1c level assessment at day 14. At day 30, blood serum, liver, kidney, and heart samples were collected for tissue trace element assessment using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). STZ-treated rats were characterized by lack of significant weight gain and elevated HbA1c and blood glucose levels. ICP-MS analysis demonstrated a dose-dependent accumulation of Cu, Mn, Mo, and Se levels in the liver. Correspondingly, the dose-dependent increase in renal Cu, Mn, V, and Zn levels was significant, whereas the observed trend for kidney V and Mo accumulation was nearly significant. The patterns of trace element content in the myocardium of STZ-exposed rats were quite different from those observed for liver and kidney. Only cardiac Zn content was characterized by a significant decrease. Serum Co, Cr, Cu, Se, V, and Mo levels were characterized by a significant decrease in response to STZ-induced diabetes. Generally, the obtained data demonstrate that diabetes is associated with altered copper, manganese, molybdenum, chromium, and vanadium handling. In turn, only altered Zn status may provide a link to diabetic cardiotoxicity. However, the particular mechanisms of both impaired metal handling in STZ diabetes and their potential anti-diabetic activity require further investigation.

Abstract
Trace elements are essential for the proper functioning of proteins, enzymes, and transcriptional factors. However, toxic metals will compete with essential trace elements, and damage enzymatic activities and various physiological functions. We aimed to investigate the status of serum essential trace elements and toxic metals in Chinese diabetic retinopathy (DR) patients, and to analyze their associations.This retrospective study included 33 normal subjects (normal group), 44 type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) patients with DR (DR group), and 58 T2D patients without DR (diabetes mellitus [DM] group). Serum levels of zinc (Zn), manganese (Mn), cadmium (Cd), and cesium (Cs), were measured for all participants using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry.The serum concentrations of Mn (0.0226 μg/L) and Zn (98.162 μg/L) were significantly lower in DR group, compared with both the DM group and normal group (P < 0.05). In contrast, the serum levels of Cs (0.0354 μg/L) and Cd (0.0149 μg/L) were significantly higher in DR group, compared with the normal group (Cs: z = 3.136, P = .002; Cd: z = 3.766, P < .0001). Similarly, the serum Cs level in the DM group was 0.0323 μg/L, which was significantly higher than that in the normal group (0.0167 μg/L, z = 2.692, P = .007). Moreover, the area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve values of Mn (0.753 [95% confidence interval, CI 0.635-0.872, P = .002]), and Cd (0.797 [95% CI 0.643-0.952, P = .003]) were significantly greater than those of Zn and Cs, for DR identification.Our results suggest that deficient essential trace elements and accumulated toxic metals were highly associated with the presence of DR.

Abstract
A major health scandal involving DEHP-tainted (di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate) foodstuffs occurred in Taiwan in 2011. We investigated temporal relationships between urinary DEHP metabolites and biomarkers of oxidative stress in two cohorts of potentially affected children during that food scandal. One cohort was collected from Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital in southern Taiwan between May and June of 2011 (the KMUH cohort). This cohort was followed up at 2, 6, and 44 months. The other cohort was collected from a nationwide health survey conducted by Taiwan's National Health Research Institutes (the NHRI cohort) for potentially affected people between August 2012 and January 2013. Both cohorts only included children 10 years old and younger who had provided enough urine for analysis of urinary DEHP oxidative metabolites and two markers of oxidative stress: 8-oxo-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) and malondialdehyde (MDA). The KMUH cohort had a simultaneous and significant decrease in urinary DEHP metabolites, 8-OHdG, and MDA, with the lowest concentrations found at the 6-month follow up and maintained until the 44-month follow up, consistent with those from NHRI cohort at ∼15-18 months post-scandal (p > 0.05). There were decreases in both DEHP metabolites and oxidative stress markers across the populations, but no association was observed between DEHP metabolites and oxidative stress markers in individuals in the two cohorts. Continued follow-up is needed to determine long-term health consequences in these children.

Abstract
Arsenic and copper, two toxic pollutants, are powerful inducers of oxidative stress. Exposure to copper and arsenic can cause intestinal injury in cockerel. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of these two pollutants on the gastrointestinal tract of cockerels. Experimental results showed that the activity of antioxidant enzymes (catalase and glutathione peroxidase) was inhibited and the ionic balance was destroyed after exposure to copper sulfate (300 mg/kg) and/or arsenic trioxide (30 mg/kg). However, the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines (nuclear factor kappa-B, cyclooxygenase-2, tumor necrosis factor-α, and prostaglandin E2 synthases) increased markedly. Damages to the biofilm structure and inflammatory cell infiltration were simultaneously observed during histological examination. Heat-shock proteins were also expressed in large quantities after exposure to the poisons. Collectively, exposure to arsenite and/or Cu2+ can cause rectal damage in cockerels, inducing inflammation and an imbalance in immune system responses. Sometimes, exposure to both pollutants can produce even more toxic effects. Heat-shock proteins can protect the tissue from the exotoxins but the specific mechanisms require exploration. After oral ingestion of toxins, the rectum can still be damaged, necessitating attention to the safety of poultry breeding, human food safety, and environmental protection.

Abstract
PURPOSE This cross-sectional study aimed to assess the effect of environmental cadmium (Cd) exposure and essential metal imbalance on renal tubular damage and oxidative stress in 979 adults living in a Cd-polluted area near an abandoned copper (Cu) refinery. METHODS We analyzed urinary Cd concentrations, renal tubular damage and oxidative stress markers, such as beta-2 microglobulin (β2-MG) and N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) activity and urine malondialdehyde (MDA) levels. The serum copper-to-zinc ratio (CZR) was used as an essential metal imbalance indicator. We divided the subjects into two Cd exposure groups based on the reference level of urinary Cd for renal dysfunction (2 μg/g creatinine). RESULTS The geometric mean concentration of urinary Cd in all subjects was 2.25 μg/g creatinine. In both low and high Cd exposure groups, urinary Cd levels were positively correlated with urinary NAG activity, but not with serum CZR. After multivariate adjustment, serum CZR was strongly associated with urinary β2-MG levels in the low Cd exposure group (β = 1.360, P = 0.019) and was significantly associated with urinary MDA levels, regardless of Cd exposure level. In addition, the risk of renal tubular damage was significantly associated with urinary Cd level, particularly in the lowest or highest CZR tertile groups. CONCLUSIONS Essential metal imbalance may be a determinant of oxidative stress and renal tubular damage in a chronically Cd-exposed population, and proper zinc supplementation will be effective in preventing adverse health effects due to Cd exposure.

Abstract
AIMS AND OBJECTIVE This study aimed to investigate the value of Thiol/Disulfide homeostasis in pediatric diabetic ketoacidosis patients suffering from type 1 diabetes mellitus. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study featured children who were diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis and who were consecutively admitted to pediatric intensive care within one year of their diagnosis. Thiol/disulfide homeostasis was evaluated in 45 pediatric patients suffering from DKA, as well as 45 healthy controls of parallel gender and age. Thiol/disulfide homeostasis parameters were measured using a novel automated measurement method and the correlation between demographic data and parameters was measured. RESULTS Pediatric patients were found to have low native thiols, total thiols and disulfide levels with type 1 diabetes after DKA (331.82±106.40, 362.71±113.31, 17.02±5.33 μmol/L, respectively) as compared to the control group (445.08±24.41, 481.21± 28.47, 18.06±5.12 μmol/L, respectively). CONCLUSION Thiol/disulfide homeostasis was distorted in pediatric patients with DKA. Furthermore, it was found that they are not likely to return to normal, immediately after treatment.

Abstract
The study assessed trace element selenium (Se) and a heavy metal lead (Pb) in patients with type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and its associated proteinuria. Total 275 subjects aged between 30 and 90 years were studied: 93 T2DM, 98 T2DM with proteinuria, and 84 as controls. Serum Se and Pb were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES) and other biochemical indices by ROCHE module COBAS 6000 analyzer. Statistical analysis was done by one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) at P < 0.0001 followed by Tukey's honest test. Pearson's correlation coefficient was applied to observe the effects of Se and Pb on FPG and ACR. Decreased Se levels were observed in T2DM and T2DM with proteinuria with no significant difference and serum Pb was found within reference range in both groups. Se showed no significant association with FBG and ACR while mid-upper tertile of Pb was significantly associated with ACR of T2DM with the proteinuria group (P < 0.01). Se is known to have a U-shaped relationship with T2DM. Low Se levels in both groups may be due to the effect of disease and its related inflammation. Detected levels of Pb suggest that studied population had lower exposure to it. Association of Pb with ACR showed consistency with the classical studies that even low levels of Pb may cause the renal deterioration.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Inadequate nutrient supply and insulin resistance contribute to the pathogenesis of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and increase the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. MetS can be induced by prolonged feeding of a high-carbohydrate, high-fat (HCHF) diet. The present study was designed using Wistar albino rats as an experimental model to investigate the effect of subchronic withdrawal of an HCHF diet during MetS on distribution of copper (Cu), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), zinc (Zn) and chromium (Cr) in different biological media. METHODS The experimental animals were fed an HCHF diet for up to 16 weeks for induction of MetS. After inducing MetS, some animals were shifted to a basal diet for the next 4 weeks. Distribution of trace elements (TE) in serum, liver and faeces at the different time intervals and their relationship with dietary TE were analyzed. RESULTS On withdrawal of the HCHF diet, concentrations of Zn, Mg, Mn (serum, p<0.05; liver, p<0.001) and Cr were increased, and Cu and Fe were decreased in serum and liver at week 16. Furthermore, levels of Cu and Fe were reduced significantly (p<0.05) in faeces on feeding the HCHF diet and increased on withdrawal of the diet, which also reflects the metabolic fate of TE during MetS. CONCLUSIONS Consumption of an HCHF diet over a long time period leads to alteration of the TE profile in serum, liver and feces during MetS, which is reversed upon dietary intervention. This can be correlated with their concentrations in HCHF and basal diets, and hence can contribute to proper dietary control of this global issue.

The aim of this study was to assess the levels of Zn, Fe and Cu in the serum and hair, and dietary intake of type 2 diabetic patients and their association with glucose and lipid indices. The study was conducted on 62 people aged 40-78 years (31 diabetic patients and 31 healthy subjects, who were the control group). The content of trace elements in the hair and serum was analysed with the AAS method. The serum insulin, HbA1c, glucose, total cholesterol and triacylglycerol concentrations were measured by means of RIA, HPLC and colorimetric methods, respectively. The diabetic patients were found to have significantly higher dietary iron intake, higher hair Fe and lower serum Zn concentrations than the non-diabetic subjects, while the hair Zn and Cu contents were comparable in both groups. The serum Zn and Cu levels of the diabetic subjects were negatively correlated with the serum glucose, the serum Zn and Cu/Zn ratio was inversely correlated with the serum total cholesterol and the serum insulin level was positively associated with the hair Cu/Zn ratio. The results of this study indicate that the trace element status (Zn, Fe, Cu), as reflected in the blood serum and hair, may be disturbed due to metabolic derangement occurring in diabetes.

Abstract
In the present work, analytical method for the determination of trace elements in adipose tissue by means of inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was developed. Adipose tissue from two groups of the patients with obesity (with and without metabolic syndrome) was investigated. The main aim of this study was to reveal some differences and regularities in concentrations of trace elements in adipose tissue between these two groups of the individuals. Moreover, different types of adipose tissue (subcutaneous, preperitoneal, and visceral) were analyzed separately in order to investigate distribution of metals between these types in different groups of obese people. Al, Ba, Ca, Co, Cu, Cr, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Sr, and Zn were selected for the quantitative determination. However, only 6 elements (Na, K, Ca, Fe, Mg, and Zn) were determined in all analyzed samples independently of the type of adipose tissue and presence of metabolic disorder of the patient. Concentrations of Ca, Fe, K, and Na were found to be strongly dependent on the type of adipose tissue. Other elements in terms of detection frequency in adipose tissue samples can be arranged in the following sequence Sr (94.7%), Cr (86.2%), Cu (24.6%), Li (18%), Ba (1.8%), Co (0.05%). The concentrations of Al, Mn, and Ni were found to be lower than limit of detection (LOD) in all analyzed samples. Comparison of metal distribution depending on the type of adipose tissue of people with and without metabolic syndrome is discussed in this work.

Abstract
Glycemia and insulin resistance are important regulators of multiple physiological processes and their dysregulation has wide-ranging consequences, including alterations in plasma concentrations of metal micronutrients. Here, magnesium, zinc, copper, selenium and glycated albumin (HbA1c) concentrations and quartile differences were examined in 45 subjects with type-I diabetes (T1DM), 54 subjects with type-II diabetes (T2DM) and 62 control subjects in order to assess potential differences between sexes and between T1DM and T2DM. Plasma magnesium concentration was decreased in T1DM subjects, with the second, third and fourth quartiles of magnesium concentrations associated with the absence of T1DM. This effect was observed in females but not males. In T2DM, the highest quartile of selenium concentrations and the third quartile of copper concentrations associated with the absence of diabetes in males. The highest quartile of magnesium concentrations was associated with the absence of T2DM in males but not females. HbA1c correlated with plasma concentrations of magnesium (negatively, in both sexes together in T1DM and T1DM males), copper (positively, in T1DM males and in both sexes together in T2DM), selenium (positively, in both sexes together in T1DM and T2DM, and T2DM females) and with zinc/copper ratio (negatively, in both sexes together in T1DM and T2DM). This study shows that plasma magnesium concentration is altered to the highest degree in T1DM, while in T2DM, plasma selenium and copper concentrations are significantly affected. This work increases our understanding of how T1DM and T2DM affects plasma metal concentrations and may have future implications for diabetes management.

Abstract
Different distributions of 28 elements and 17 amino acids in pectoralis, wing biceps brachii and leg gastrocnemius of chicken upon CuSO4 (300 mg/kg) exposure for 90 days were investigated. Accompanied by copper accumulation, pathological injuries were observed in those three kinds of skeletal muscles using histological and ultrastructural methods. Based on data obtained, we analyzed leg gastrocnemius displayed the most increases (P < 0.000) in all three kinds of elements detected, including macroelements (131%), essential microelements (129%) and toxic microelements (179%) than the other two skeletal muscles. Furthermore, decreased total amino acids (P = 0.006), a susceptibility of lipid peroxidation/oxidative stress and a disequilibrium of nutrition and taste were analyzed in the leg gastrocnemius, indicating an unsuitability for human consumption. Intriguingly, these anomalies were scarce in pectoralis and wing biceps brachii. Combined with multivariate analysis we may conclude that leg gastrocnemius are more vulnerable to copper stress than pectoralis and wing biceps brachii in chicken.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Emerging findings have raised concerns about significant associations between excessive copper (Cu) and abnormal glucose metabolism. Nevertheless, related researches on the relationship of Cu concentration and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are limited. The objective of this study was to determine whether plasma Cu concentration is associated with GDM. METHODS A case-control study of 248 cases of GDM and 248 age-, parity- and gestational age-matched controls was conducted in Wuhan, China between August 2012 and April 2015. Fasting blood samples of participants were collected at the time of GDM screening (≥24 weeks of gestation). Plasma Cu concentrations were detected by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The strength of the association of plasma Cu with GDM odds was evaluated by odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) from conditional logistic regression. Partial Spearman or Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated to estimate the interrelationship between plasma Cu and the risk factors of GDM. RESULTS Plasma Cu concentrations in the GDM group (mean ± SD: 1960.24 ± 391.98 μg/L) were higher than in the control group (mean ± SD: 1842.43 ± 387.09 μg/L) (P = 0.001). After adjustment for possible confounders, the ORs (95% CIs) of GDM across increasing quartiles of plasma Cu levels were 1.00 (referent), 1.79 (0.90-3.55), 2.72 (1.35-5.48) and 2.91 (1.48-5.75), respectively; the OR (95% CI) of GDM was 1.33 (1.06-1.67) for each standard deviation increment of plasma Cu. Moreover, Cu concentrations were positively associated with fasting plasma glucose, 1-h post-glucose load and 2-h post-glucose load (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The present study indicated a significantly increased odds of GDM in association with higher concentrations of plasma Cu. Prospective cohort studies in other populations are needed to confirm our findings.

Abstract
Trace elements can influence glucose metabolism and be related to oxidative stress in type 2 diabetes mellitus. Moreover, trace elements play important roles in the nephrotic complications of these patients. Nevertheless, few investigations have been made into the changes in the levels of trace elements in diabetic patients at various stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The aims of this present study were to determine the levels of some important trace elements in diabetic patients during the early stages of CKD and to identify the relationship between these elements and CKD progression in type 2 diabetic patients. One hundred and forty-eight type 2 diabetic patients with chronic kidney diseases were recruited into this study. The subjects were grouped into four stages (1, 2, 3a, 3b) of CKD, according to their urine protein levels and estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFRs). The levels of serum zinc and iron exhibited a statistically significant decreasing trend (P trend = 0.032 and 0.047, respectively) from stage 1 to stage 3b after adjustment for age, gender, smoking, alcohol consumption, education, hypertension, and body mass index. The other tested elements, including copper, magnesium, selenium, chromium, and manganese, did not display any significant trends upon proceeding from stage 1 to stage 3b. Thus, serum zinc and iron appear to be useful markers when evaluating the early progression of CKD in type 2 diabetic patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Oxidative stress is risk factor in progression of diabetes. It can increase cytokine production via several different mechanisms. Inflammation can affect gut neural apparatus that may lead to dysmotility which may exaggerate occurrence of bacterial overgrowth in intestine. Thus, a study was planned to understand the complex interplay of oxidative stress, inflammatory cytokines, gut motility and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS Seventy-five T1DM patients and 75 healthy controls were enrolled. Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) and orocecal transit time (OCTT) were measured using noninvasive glucose and lactulose hydrogen breath tests, respectively. Plasma levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6), tissue necrosis factor-alfa (TNF-α) and interleukin-10 (IL-10) were measured in all subjects by ELISA. Oxidative stress and anti-oxidant parameters were measured by standard methods. RESULTS Out of 75 T1DM patients, 36 were males with Mean ± SD age 22.3 ± 5.2 years, IL-6, TNF-α and IL-10 were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in T1DM patients as compared to controls. Lipid peroxidation (LPO) was significantly increased (P < 0.001), while reduced glutathione (GSH) significantly decreased (P < 0.01), whereas superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase significantly higher (P < 0.05) in T1DM patients as compared to controls. Positive correlation was observed between glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) levels with LPO and negative correlation with GSH. Further, there was positive correlation between LPO and inflammatory cytokines (IL-6 & IL-10). OCTT was delayed and SIBO significantly higher in patients as compared to controls. On comparison of T1DM based on duration of disease, effect of all parameters was more pronounced in disease duration ≥5 years. CONCLUSION This study indicates that there is association between hyperglycaemia, oxidative stress (LPO), anti-oxidants (GSH, SOD and catalase), inflammatory cytokines, gut motility (OCTT), and small intestinal overgrowth in type 1 diabetes mellitus patients. This association is intensified as duration of disease increases.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of zinc on the levels of fasting blood glucose (FBG), triglycerides (TG), and malondialdehyde (MDA) in male diabetic Rattus norvegicus Wistar rats.Methods: Diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of 40 mg/kg BW streptozotocin (STZ) and confirmed by FBG level higher than 200 mg/dL after 2 weeks. The rats were randomly divided into three groups: control group (STZ), treatment I (STZ + zinc 5 mg/kg BW), and treatment II (STZ + zinc 10 mg/kg BW). Zinc was administered by oral gavage for 30 days. At the end of the experiment, levels of FBG, TG, and MDA were measured. Data were analyzed using paired t-test or Wilcoxon test as appropriate.Results: Supplementation of 5 mg/kg zinc significantly decreased the levels of FBG (pre-intervention: 328.95±70.90 mg/dL, post-intervention: 144.35±34.27 mg/dL, p<0.05), TG (pre-intervention: 252.48±26.30 mg/dL, post-intervention: 147.90±12.18 mg/dL, p<0.05), and MDA (pre-intervention: 12.11±6.46 nm/mL, post-intervention: 4.75±2.34 nm/mL, p<0.05). Moreover, supplementation of 10 mg/kg zinc decreased the levels of TG (pre-intervention: 275.62±56.25nm/mL, post-intervention: 165.58±22.63 nm/mL, p<0.05) and MDA (pre-intervention: 13.08±6.60 nm/mL, post-intervention: 5.08±2.40 nm/mL, p<0.05).Conclusion: Supplementation of zinc significantly reduced the levels of FBG, TG, and MDA in diabetic rats.

Abstract
As the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) decreases, it can cause imbalance in some divalent elements. These imbalances can cause increased oxidative stress in patients with renal impairment. The aim of present study was to investigate the changes of these divalent elements with CKD progression. One hundred and ninety-four patients with chronic kidney diseases (CKD) were divided into five stages, stage 1, 2, 3a, 3b, 4, and were recruited into this study. The divalent elements, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, as well as iron, zinc, and copper were determined in clinical chemistry analyzer. Higher CKD stages were found to be associated with increased levels of phosphorus and copper; Ptrend values were 0.002 and 0.004, respectively. Also, higher CKD stages were associated with decreased levels of zinc; Ptrend value was 0.002, after adjustment for age, gender, smoke, education, diabetes, hypertension, and BMI. Decreased levels of zinc and elevated levels of phosphorus and copper might increase the oxidative stress and complications in CKD patients. Future randomized studies are needed to show whether adjusting dietary intake of phosphorus, copper, and zinc might affect the progression of CKD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The early imbalances of trace elements in type 1 diabetes (T1D) may cause disturbance of glucose metabolism and more oxidative stress that may enhance the development of insulin resistance and diabetic complications. We aim to evaluate the serum level of selenium (Se), zinc (Zn), magnesium (Mg), and copper (Cu), the degree of oxidative stress and evaluate their relations to glycemic control in children with T1D. METHODS A case-control study which included 100 diabetic children and 40 healthy children age, sex, and ethnicity-matched as a control group. The diabetic children were divided into poor and good controlled patients according to glycosylated hemoglobin (A1c %). Studied children underwent history taking, clinical examination and laboratory measurement of serum Se, Zn, Mg, and Cu levels, erythrocyte reduced glutathione (GSH) and peroxidase enzyme activity (GPx). RESULTS Serum Se, Zn, Mg, Cu, erythrocyte GSH, and GPx were significantly lower in the diabetic group in comparison to the control group (P<0.05) and their levels were lower in poorly controlled patients compared to good controlled patients (P<0.05). The serum Se, Zn, Mg, erythrocyte GSH, and GPx showed a negative correlation with A1c %. The serum Se showed a positive correlation with erythrocyte GSH and GPx ([r=0.56, P<0.001], [r=0.78, P<0.001], respectively). CONCLUSION Children with T1D, especially poorly controlled cases, had low serum Se, Zn, Mg, Cu, GSH, and GPx. Low serum Se in diabetic children may affect the erythrocyte GSH-GPx system.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of selenium on the ion profiles in the heart, liver, spleen, and kidney through the oral administration of hexavalent chromium. Approximately 22.14 mg/kg b.w. K2Cr2O7 was added to water to establish a chronic poisoning model. Different selenium levels (0.00, 0.31, 0.63, 1.25, 2.50, and 5.00 mg Na2SeO3/kg b.w.) around the safe dose were administered to the experimental group model. Ca, Mg, Mn, Fe, Cu, and Zn were detected in the organs through flame atomic absorption spectrometry after these organs were exposed to K2Cr2O7 and Na2SeO3 for 14, 28, and 42 days. Results showed that these elements exhibited various changes. Ca contents declined in the heart, liver, and spleen. Ca contents also decreased on the 28th day and increased on the 42nd day in the kidney. Mn contents declined in the heart and spleen but increased in the kidney. Mn contents also decreased on the 28th day and increased on the 42nd day in the liver. Cu contents declined in the heart and spleen. Cu contents increased on the 28th day and decreased on the 42nd day in the liver and kidney. Zn contents declined in the heart and spleen. Zn contents increased on the 28th day and decreased on the 42nd day in the liver and kidney. Fe contents decreased in the heart and liver. Fe contents increased on the 28th day and decreased on the 42nd day in the spleen and kidney. Mg contents did not significantly change in these organs. Appropriate selenium contents enhanced Mn and Zn contents, which were declined by chromium. Conversely, appropriate selenium contents reduced Ca, Fe, and Cu contents, which were increased by chromium. In conclusion, the exposure of chickens to K2Cr2O7 induced changes in different trace elements, and Na2SeO3 supplementation could alleviate this condition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is well known that dyslipidemia and chronic hyperglycemia increase the onset of diabetes and diabetic complication. The aim of this study is to see the association of trace metals elements and lipid profile among type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. METHODS The study was conducted on 214 type 2 diabetic patients at Jimma University Specialized Hospital, Jimma, Ethiopia. All the eligible study participants responded to the structured interviewer administered questionnaire and fasting venous blood was drawn for biochemical analysis. Trace metal elements (zinc(Zn+2), magnesium(Mg+2), chromium(Cr+3), calcium(Ca+2), phosphorus(Po4-3), manganese(Mn+2), copper(Cu+2), and iron(Fe+3)) and lipid profiles (total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein (HDL-C), and triglycerides (TG)) were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry and enzymatic determination method respectively. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 24 software for windows. Bonferroni correction for multiple statistical comparisons was used and a p-value less than 0.01 were accepted as a level of significance. RESULT The mean age of study participants was 42.95(±12.6) with an average of 5.83(±3.1) years being diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. The BMI of female (27.1(±4.9)) was significantly higher than male (25.21(±4.2)). BMI shows positive and significant (p < 0.01) association with lipid profiles (TC, LDL-C, and TG) among type 2 diabetic patients in the liner regression model. In addition, WH-R was positively associated with TG. In Pearson partial correlation adjusted for sex and age, Za+2 shown to have statistically significant and negative correlations with TC, LDL-C and with TG. Mg+2 and Cr+2 negatively and significantly correlated with the lipid profile TC and LDL-C. Ca+2 negatively correlated with TC and TG. Po-34 positively correlated with HDL-C; iron negatively correlated with TC. However, in the liner regression model, only calcium positively and significantly (Beta = -0.21, p < 0.01) associated with TG. CONCLUSION In the current study, a negative correlation was observed between trace metal elements (Zn+2, Mg+2, Cr+3, Ca+2 and Fe+3) and lipid profile (TC, LDL-C and TG) among type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. In addition, Ca+2 observed to be associated with TG. Future studies are highly advised to uncover the bidirectional association between trace metal element and dyslipidemia in diabetic patients.

Abstract
The present study aimed to investigate, in the streptozotocin-induced mild diabetic rat model, the zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), calcium (Ca), and magnesium (Mg) concentration in serum, liver, and kidney tissues, and urine samples from adult Wistar rats treated neonatally with streptozotocin (STZ). Diabetes was induced by subcutaneous administration of streptozotocin (100 mg/Kg) in female Wistar rats of 2 days old (STZ, n = 10). Control group (CG, n = 10) received only sodium-citrate buffer. The mineral concentrations were measured by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The validity and accuracy were checked by conventional methods. STZ neonatal injection successfully leaded to mild diabetes in the adult rats. Serum concentrations of Zn, Cu, Fe, Ca, and Mg showed no changes (p > 0.05) due to diabetes. The Zn, Fe, Ca, and Mg concentrations in liver and kidney tissues were not different (p > 0.05) between STZ and CG. The mean values of Cu were higher (p < 0.05) in liver and kidney samples from STZ as compared to CG. Urine minerals concentrations (Zn, Cu, Fe and Ca) in STZ-rats group were lower (p < 0.05) than CG. However, the content of all evaluated minerals in the excreted urine were higher (p < 0.01) in STZ-rats during a 24 h collection period. Urinary excretion of Zn, Cu, Fe, Ca, and Mg was strongly correlated with urinary volume during the 24 h period (r > 0.7; p < 0.001). Observed changes in mineral metabolism of STZ-induced mild diabetes model could be due to the endocrine imbalance associated with the diabetic condition.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between zinc homeostasis and pancreatic function had been established. In this study we aimed firstly to configure the inflammatory pattern and hyperglycemia in zinc deficient diabetic rats. Secondly to illustrate the effect of two selected agents namely Zinc gluconate and sage oil (Salvia Officinalis, family Lamiaceae). METHODS Rats were fed on Zinc deficient diet, deionized water for 28days along with Zinc level check up at intervals to achieve zinc deficient state then rats were rendered diabetic through receiving one dose of alloxan monohydrate (120mg/kg) body weight, classified later into 5 subgroups. RESULTS Treatment with sage oil (0.042mg/kg IP) and Zinc gluconate orally (150mg/kg) body weight daily for 8 weeks significantly reduced serum glucose, C-reactive protein (CRP), Tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF- α), interleukins-6 1 β, inflammatory8 (IFN ȣ), pancreatic 1L1-β along with an increase in serum Zinc and pancreatic Zinc transporter 8 (ZNT8). Histopathological results of pancreatic tissues showed a good correlation with the biochemical findings. CONCLUSIONS Both sage oil and zinc gluconate induced an improvement in the glycemic and inflammatory states. This may be of value like the therapeutic agent for diabetes.

Abstract
Copper (Cu) is an important trace element involved in oxidative stress, which is associated with the onset and progression of diabetes mellitus (DM). However, clinical studies comparing plasma or serum Cu levels in patients with DM and in healthy individuals report conflicting findings. Therefore, in this meta-analysis, we analyzed the circulating levels of Cu associated with DM (including type 1 diabetes mellitus [T1DM] and type 2 diabetes mellitus [T2DM]). We searched the articles indexed in PubMed, OVID, and Cochrane databases, published through January 2016 and meeting our predefined criteria. Requisite data were extracted, and a random-effect model or a fixed-effect model was used to conduct the meta-analysis. Fifteen eligible studies involving a total of 1079 DM patients and 561 healthy controls were identified. Overall, the DM patients showed higher Cu levels than the healthy controls (plasma Cu mean difference [MD] = 1.69 μmol/L, p < 0.0001; serum Cu MD = 4.06 μmol/L, p = 0.005; plasma and serum Cu MD = 2.67 μmol/L, p = 0.006). Stratification based on the type of diabetes also indicated higher levels of Cu in the plasma and serum of DM patients than in healthy controls, respectively. Stratification of DM patients associated with and without complications also revealed similar results. This meta-analysis suggests that DM patients carried higher levels of Cu than healthy individuals. However, international cohort studies are needed to corroborate our findings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the present study is to investigate the association of trace elements and the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus. DESIGN AND METHODS The 1837 participants (637 men and 1200 women) aged 40-70 were from a cross-sectional community-based study performed in downtown Shanghai. All the participants without diabetes mellitus history underwent a 75-g OGTT. The participants with diabetes mellitus took 100g steamed bread as the substitute. The fasting and OGTT 2h or postprandial 2h venous blood samples were collected. Blood glucose levels, fasting serum insulin concentrations, lipid profiles, HbA1C and 19 trace elements including magnesium, copper, zinc and selenium and so on were assayed. RESULTS Of all the 1837 studied subjects, 510 subjects had diabetes mellitus (191 male, 319 female). Serum magnesium levels were decreased statistically (p<0.05), but serum copper, zinc and selenium levels were significantly increased in subjects with diabetes mellitus compared to non-diabetic subjects (p<0.01 for copper, p<0.001 for zinc and selenium). Logistic regression analysis showed that serum magnesium was negatively associated with diabetes (p<0.05) and serum copper, zinc, and selenium were all positively associated with diabetes (p<0.05 for copper, p<0.001 for both zinc and selenium). Correlation analysis showed a remarkable correlation between blood glucose, HbA1C and serum magnesium, copper, zinc, and selenium (p<0.01 for zinc, p<0.001 for copper, zinc and selenium). CONCLUSIONS Serum magnesium levels are decreased and serum copper, zinc and selenium levels are elevated in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
Tear film is critical for the well-being and homeostasis of the ocular surface. Although the composition of the tear film is well known, the composition of metallic elements have yet to be analysed. Despite trace elements metabolism has been reported to play a role in the pathogenesis of diabetes mellitus, a metabolic disease that affects several aspects of homeostasis, little is known in the literature regarding concentration and possible variation of metallic elements in tear film. We studied the concentrations of several essential and non-essential metallic elements in the tear fluid and serum of patients with type II diabetes mellitus and a group of non-diabetic controls. Serum and tear fluid were collected from 97 patients: 47 type II diabetic patients and 50 non-diabetic controls. Regarding tear film, there were statistically significant differences in Zinc, Chrome, Cobalt, Manganese, Barium, and Lead between groups; the values of all metallic elements were found to be statistically significant higher in patients with mellitus type II diabetes. Regarding serum values there was a statistically significant difference in Chrome, Cobalt, and Selenium values; the concentrations of Chrome and Cobalt were higher in the control group, while Selenium concentration was higher in diabetic patients. In patients with type II diabetes, metal elements with higher concentrations in tears compared to serum were: Lead, Barium, Manganese, Cobalt, and Chrome. In the control group, the metal elements with the highest concentration in tear film compared to serum were Chrome, Manganese, Barium, and Lead. In this study, we attempted to evaluate the possible effect of a disease, such as diabetes, on the metabolism of metallic elements. Although our evidence was very interesting, it is probably limited in its accuracy due to the fact that individuals in the control group harboured ocular pathologies. This work lays the foundation for future studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Type 1 diabetes mellitus is a chronic inflammatory disease involving insulin producing β-cells destroyed by the conjoined action of auto reactive T-cells, inflammatory cytokines and monocytic cells. The aim of this study was to elucidate the status of pro-inflammatory cytokines and biochemical markers and possible correlation of these factors towards outcome of the disease. METHODS The study was carried out on 29 T1D subjects and 20 healthy subjects. Plasma levels of oxidative stress markers, enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants were estimated employing biochemical assays. The levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines such as by IL-1β & IL-17 in the serum were determined by ELISA, while the expression of TNF-α, IL-23 & IFN-γ was ascertained by qRT-PCR. RESULTS The onset of T1D disease was accompanied with elevation in levels of Plasma malondialdehyde, protein carbonyl content and nitric oxide while plasma vitamin C, reduced glutathione and erythrocyte sulfhydryl groups were found to be significantly decreased in T1D patients as compared to healthy control subjects. Activity of antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione reductase and glutathione-s-transferase showed a significant suppression in the erythrocytes of T1D patients as compared to healthy subjects. Nevertheless, the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and IL-17A were significantly augmented (***p≤.001) on one hand, while expression of T cell based cytokines IFN-γ, TNF-α and IL-23 was also up-regulated (*p≤.05) as compared to healthy human subjects. CONCLUSION The level of pro-inflammatory cytokines and specific biochemical markers in the serum of the patient can be exploited as potential markers for type 1 diabetes pathogenesis. The study suggests that level of inflammatory markers is up-regulated in T1D patients in an age dependent manner.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effects of oral administration of trivalent chromium on the contents of Ca, Mg, Mn, Fe, Cu, and Zn in the heart, liver, and kidney. Different levels of 1/8, 1/4, and 1/2 LD50 (LD50 = 5000 mg/kg body mass) CrCl3 milligrams per kilogram body mass daily were added into the water to establish the chronic poisoning model. Ca, Mg, Mn, Fe, Cu, and Zn were detected with the flame atomic absorption spectrometry in the organs exposed 14, 28, and 42 days to CrCl3, respectively. Results showed that Cr was accumulated in the heart, liver, and kidney significantly (P < 0.05) with extended time and dose. The contents of Ca and Fe increased, whereas those of Mg, Mn, Cu, and Zn decreased in the heart, liver, and kidney of each treated group, which had a dose- and time-dependent relationship, but the contents of Mg and Zn in the heart took on a fluctuated change. These particular observations were different from those in the control group. In conclusion, the oral administration of CrCl3 could change the contents of Ca, Mg, Mn, Fe, Cu, and Zn in the heart, liver, and kidney, which may cause disorders in the absorption and metabolism of the metal elements of chickens.

Abstract
The trace elements metabolism has been reported to possess specific roles in the pathogenesis and progress of diabetes mellitus. Due to the continuous increase in the population of patients with Type 2 diabetes (T2D), this study aims to assess the levels and inter-relationships of fast blood glucose (FBG) and serum trace elements in Type 2 diabetic patients. This study was conducted on 40 Egyptian Type 2 diabetic patients and 36 healthy volunteers (Hospital of Tanta University, Tanta, Egypt). The blood serum was digested and then used to determine the levels of 24 trace elements using an inductive coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). Multivariate statistical analysis depended on correlation coefficient, cluster analysis (CA) and principal component analysis (PCA), were used to analysis the data. The results exhibited significant changes in FBG and eight of trace elements, Zn, Cu, Se, Fe, Mn, Cr, Mg, and As, levels in the blood serum of Type 2 diabetic patients relative to those of healthy controls. The statistical analyses using multivariate statistical techniques were obvious in the reduction of the experimental variables, and grouping the trace elements in patients into three clusters. The application of PCA revealed a distinct difference in associations of trace elements and their clustering patterns in control and patients group in particular for Mg, Fe, Cu, and Zn that appeared to be the most crucial factors which related with Type 2 diabetes. Therefore, on the basis of this study, the contributors of trace elements content in Type 2 diabetic patients can be determine and specify with correlation relationship and multivariate statistical analysis, which confirm that the alteration of some essential trace metals may play a role in the development of diabetes mellitus.

Abstract
Ligands of the 3-hydroxy-4-pyridinone (3,4-HPO) type, with one (Hmpp) or two methyl groups (Hdmpp), have been reported to possess biomedical, chemical and analytical applications. In this first screening study aiming to uncover new promising agents to mitigate the oxidative damage highly present in several metabolic disorders, such as diabetes mellitus, we assessed the potential of twelve 3,4-HPO metal ion complexes to modulate oxidative burst in human neutrophils. Metal ion 3,4-HPO complexes of Ni, Fe, V, Co, Cu and Zn were synthesized and tested up to 15μM. Among all the compounds, [Cu(mpp)2] and [Cu(dmpp)2] exhibited the highest scavenging capacity against superoxide radical (O2(-)) (IC50=0.36±0.07 and 0.30±0.06μM, respectively) and against hypochlorous acid (HOCl) (IC50=0.6±0.3 and 0.4±0.1μM, respectively). In the particular case of O2(-), [Fe(mpp)3] and [Fe(dmpp)3] (both at 15μM) presented 35% and 22% of inhibition, respectively, while all the other compounds were neither able to scavenge O2(-) nor stimulate its production. Regarding the scavenging capacity against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), all the compounds showed low efficiency (from 6-39%). Finally, with exception of [VO(mpp)2] and [VO(dmpp)2], all compounds exhibited scavenging activity against HOCl (39-81%) and the most efficient compounds were Cu(II) and Zn(II) complexes. Thus, these preliminary results uncover promising new metal ion complexes, inhibitors of neutrophil's oxidative burst, with potential anti-inflammatory properties, which may be seen as an useful strategy for further studies in the treatment of a number of diseases where oxidative damage is a serious issue.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Chromium, zinc, and magnesium are involved in insulin signal transduction, glucose metabolism, and cellular antioxidative defense. This review details the statuses of chromium, zinc, and magnesium in type 1 diabetes patients. RECENT FINDINGS Blood levels of trace elements (especially magnesium and zinc) were lower in type 1 diabetes patients than in controls and were even lower in type 1 diabetes patients with poor glycemic control. Studies with mouse models have shown that chromium and magnesium supplementation alleviated diabetes-induced complications and improved glycemic control. SUMMARY Many studies indicated positive correlations between decreased levels of serum chromium, zinc, and magnesium and poor glycemic control. The supplementation of type 1 diabetes patients with zinc, magnesium, and chromium may help to control diabetes and prevent diabetes-related oxidative injuries, but require further study.

Abstract
Sardinia is an Italian region with a high incidence of type 1 diabetes mellitus. This study aimed to determine the associations of trace elements with lipid profiles and glycaemic control in patients with T1DM. A total of 192 patients with T1DM who attended the Unit of Diabetology and Metabolic Diseases in Sassari, Italy, were enrolled. Trace elements zinc, copper, selenium, chromium, and iron were measured in whole blood by sector field inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The correlations between metabolic variables and the levels of trace elements were determined. Zinc was positively correlated with total cholesterol (P=0.023), low-density lipoprotein (P=0.0015), and triglycerides (P=0.027). Iron as significantly correlated with TC (P=0.0189), LDL (P=0.0121), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) (P=0.0466). In males, Cr was positively correlated with HDL (P=0.0079) and Se, in females was correlated with TG (P=0.0113). The mean fasting plasma glucose was166.2mgdL(-1). Chromium was correlated with fasting plasma glucose (P=0.0149), particularly in males (P=0.0038). Overall, 63.5% of the patients had moderate HbA1c (7-9%). Copper was significantly correlated with HbA1c% in males (P=0.0155). In conclusion, the results of this study indicate that trace elements show different associations with lipid levels and glycaemic control in T1DM. Zinc, Fe, and Se were associated with lipid levels whereas Cu and Cr were associated with HbA1c%.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to explore plasma antioxidant status in de novo Chinese Parkinson's disease (PD) patients and investigate its relationship with specific motor features of PD. PATIENTS AND METHODS Sixty-four de novo Chinese PD patients and 40 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were recruited. Each motor feature of PD patients was assessed by unified Parkinson's disease rating scale. Plasma antioxidant status, including plasma level of glutathione (GSH) and plasma activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), was detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The relationship between the plasma antioxidant status and motor features of PD was evaluated by Spearman's coefficient. RESULTS Plasma GSH level and plasma activities of GSH-Px, CAT and SOD of PD patients were lower than those of healthy controls. Moreover, the declining activity of plasma CAT was related with the increasing mean postural instability and gait disorder (PIGD) score and growing age. In contrast, the severity of tremor was positively correlated with plasma SOD activity. CONCLUSION Our study demonstrates that the plasma antioxidant status is impaired in de novo Chinese PD patients. The complex relationship between the plasma antioxidant status and different motor features indicates that the antioxidant mechanisms underlying tremor and PIGD of PD may be different.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Several trace elements are involved in insulin signal transduction and glucose metabolism. Our aim for this present study was to determine the levels of three important elements-magnesium, chromium, and zinc-as well as one oxidative stress marker-malondialdehyde (MDA)-in young type 1 diabetic patients at different periods of their growth, and to realize the relationships between trace elements, oxidative stress, and growth stages. METHODS A total of 88 patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus in different growth stages and 76 gender- and age-matched healthy subjects were included in this study. The levels of MDA were measured through HPLC using a C-18 column. Zinc, magnesium, and chromium concentrations in serum were assessed using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. RESULTS We found higher levels of blood malondialdehyde (MDA; p < 0.001), significantly lower levels of magnesium (p < 0.001), and no differences in zinc and chromium levels (p = 0.153 and 0.515, respectively) in younger type 1 diabetic subjects relative to those of control subjects. Only 3.4% (3/88) of younger diabetic subjects exhibited hypomagnesemia; similar results were obtained when comparing different subgroups: children, adolescents, and adults. We also observed no differences in the levels of the three elements between the genders and among the growth stages (p > 0.05) of the diabetic subjects. There were no correlations between the three trace elements and HbA1C, diabetes duration, and insulin dose/BMI (all p > 0.05), but there was a significant difference between zinc levels and insulin dose/BMI (p = 0.043) in the diabetic patients. CONCLUSIONS We found elevated blood MDA, decreased magnesium, and no changes in zinc and chromium levels in younger type 1 diabetic subjects relative to those of control subjects. Only 3.4% of younger diabetic subjects exhibited hypomagnesemia. Whether magnesium supplementation is suitable for improving insulin sensitivity and decreasing oxidative stress and inflammation will require confirmation through additional studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) is found worldwide and is regarded as one of the main risks to human health. The objective of this study was to determine the state of lipid peroxidation (LPO) and antioxidant protection in girls with T1D type considering the stages of reproductive system development. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study enrolled 56 young girls with T1D and 60 healthy girls (control) matched by age. The study population was divided into 3 age groups: prepubertal, adolescent, and juvenile. The state of LPO and antioxidant system was assessed using the coefficient of oxidative stress that represented the ratio of LPO products to general antioxidative blood activity. Spectrophotometric and fluorometric methods were applied. RESULTS The results of our study showed increased conjugated diene (CD) and thiobarbituric acid reactant (TBAR) concentrations as well as a decreased reduced glutathione level in prepubertal girls with T1D. Adolescent girls with T1D had a significantly greater CD level and juvenile girls with T1D had a significantly greater TBAR level and lower α-tocopherol concentration than girls in the control group. The greatest coefficient of oxidative stress (1.16) was observed in the prepubertal period. CONCLUSIONS The prepubertal period is characterized by the most severe state of lipid peroxidation process-antioxidant protection.
