Abstract
(1) Background: Urate levels lower than the classical cut-off point for defining hyperuricemia can increase cardiovascular risks. The aim of this study is to determine if there is a relationship between different urate levels and classic cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs). (2) Methods: A cross-sectional study of the inclusion visits of the patients recruited to the IBERICAN study was conducted. The patients were classified into quartiles according to their distribution of urate levels and separated by sex; the three lower points corresponded to normal levels of urate, and the highest quartile was determined according to the classical definition of HU. Multivariate analysis models, adjusted for epidemiological variables, were used to analyze the association of urate levels with CVRFs. (3) Results: The presence of CVRFs was higher across the quartiles of urate, with a continuous increase along the quartiles in both sexes in accordance with body mass index (p < 0.01), waist circumference (p < 0.01), blood pressure (p < 0.01), and LDL cholesterol (p < 0.01). The CV risk estimated by SCORE was associated with an increase along the quartiles in women (p = 0.02). (4) Conclusions: A progressive increase in the frequency of CVRFs, as well as in their levels, was observed across the quartiles of uricemia, which reflects an increase in the CVRs associated with uricemia.

Abstract
Objectives The study aimed to compare gout patients and healthy subjects in terms of erectile dysfunction, carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT), and other variables and to investigate the relationship between CIMT and erectile dysfunction. Patients and methods This cross-sectional study was conducted with 134 male gout patients (median age: 56 years; range, 48 to 62 years) and 104 healthy males (median age: 47 years; range, 40.5 to 54.5 years) between September 2022 and June 2023. Age, comorbidities, height, weight, laboratory results, gout treatment data, insulin resistance evaluated by the homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance, presence and severity of erectile dysfunction evaluated by the six-item International Index of Erectile Function erectile function domain (IIEF-EF), and CIMT measured by ultrasound were assessed. Results Hypertension, hyperlipidemia, greater insulin resistance, erectile dysfunction, and bilaterally increased CIMT were significantly more common in the gout group. The mean IIEF-EF score of gout patients was significantly lower than that of controls. Multivariable logistic regression revealed increased CIMT as the sole parameter independently associated with erectile dysfunction (p=0.010). When both groups were categorized into CIMT-based subsets, erectile dysfunction was present in 97.9% of patients with coexistence of gout and increased CIMT (≥0.9 mm), a significantly higher proportion compared to the other three subsets (p<0.001). Conclusion Increased CIMT was the only factor independently associated with a greater likelihood of erectile dysfunction in patients with and without gout; however, coexistence of gout and increased CIMT appears to result in a significantly elevated risk for erectile dysfunction.

Abstract
Background: Scientific societies disagree on serum uric acid (SUA) thresholds for the diagnosis of hyperuricaemia (HU) according to epidemiological or physiochemical criteria (SUA ≥ 7.0 mg/dL for men and ≥6.0 mg/dL for women [HU-7/6]; SUA ≥ 7.0 mg/dL for both genders [HU-7/7], respectively). HU is not included among the diagnostic criteria for metabolic syndrome or cardiovascular-renal-metabolic syndrome (CKM), although it promotes atherosclerosis and is associated with renal and cardiometabolic diseases. Both issues are of utmost importance and need to be clarified, hence the present study aims to assess the prevalence rates of HU and their associations with CKM factors. Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted on a random population-based sample of 6489 adults. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were performed on the most well-known renal and cardiometabolic variables of the populations with and without HU-7/7 and HU-7/6. Results: The adjusted prevalence rates for HU-7/6 were 13.4% in adult population (18.4% in men; 9.6% in women) and 10.2% (18.4% in men; 3.8% in women) for HU-7/7. The main factors associated independently with HU for both genders were low estimated glomerular filtration rate, hypertension, hypertriglyceridaemia, and alcoholism, regardless of the criteria chosen, as well as albuminuria in women and central obesity in men. Conclusions: The prevalence rates of HU increase linearly with age for both genders. The associations of CKM factors with HU diagnosed according to physiochemical criterion are more similar between men and women than those using epidemiological criteria.

Abstract
Objective Life's Essential 8 (LE8) is a new comprehensive metric based on Life's Simple 7 (LS7). Few studies have investigated the association between LE8 and the odds of hyperuricaemia (HUA). This study examined the association between LE8, LS7 with odds of HUA. Methods We cross-sectionally analysed data from the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort (CMEC) study. LE8 and LS7 were categorized as low, moderate and high. The CMEC provided an ideal and unique opportunity to characterize the association between LE8, LS7 and the odds of HUA. Results Of the 89 823 participants, 14 562 (16.2%) had HUA. A high level of LE8 was associated with lower odds of HUA after full adjustment. The adjusted odds ratios (ORs) were 1 (reference), 0.70 (95% CI 0.67, 0.73) and 0.45 (0.42, 0.48) across low, moderate and high LE8 groups, respectively (Ptrend < 0.001). Similar results were observed in LS7 and HUA. The adjusted ORs were 1 (reference), 0.68 (95% CI 0.65, 0.71) and 0.46 (95% CI 0.43, 0.49) across low, moderate and high LS7 groups, respectively (Ptrend < 0.001). There were significant interactions between LE8 and age, gender, ethnicity and drinking habits on HUA. Receiver operating characteristics analysis showed that the area under the curve for LE8 and LS7 were similar (0.638 and 0.635, respectively). Conclusion This study indicated a clearly inverse gradient association between the cardiovascular health metrics LE8 and LS7 and the odds of HUA.

Abstract
This study aimed to describe the prevalence of comorbid hypertension and hyperuricemia (HH) and detected the dietary factors for HH in Chinese adults aged 18 to 64 years. All of the data were collected from the China Nutrition and Health Surveillance 2015-2017, with a stratified, multistage, random sampling method on a national scale. A total of 52,627 adult participants aged 18~64 years from the CNHS 2015-2017 were included in this study. HH was identified as SUA level cut-offs for males and females of 420 μmol/L and 360 μmol/L, respectively, with mean systolic blood pressure ≥140 mmHg and/or mean diastolic blood pressure ≥ 90 mmHg and/or received antihypertensive treatment within two weeks. The differences in HH prevalence between or among the subgroups were compared by the Rao-Scott chi-square test. The correlations between HH and covariates or metabolic factors were detected by a weighted two-level multivariate survey logistic regression. The total weighted sufficient intake ratios of beans and nuts, vegetables, and red meat were 59.1%, 46.6%, and 64.8%, respectively. The weighted prevalence of HH in the total participants was 4.7% (95% CI: 4.3-5.0%). The positive effects of bean and nut on HH were observed. The participants who had sufficient bean and nut intake showed lower risk for HH (for the total participants: OR = 0.734, 95% CI = 0.611-0.881). The prevalence of HH might have been a public health problem, and bean and nut intake might be a protective factor for HH in the Chinese population.

Abstract
Background Evidence regarding the association between metabolism-related indicators and serum urate (SU) is limited. We aimed to obtain the incidence density of hyperuricemia and to explore the association between metabolism-related predisposing risk factors and SU. Methods A total of 48,979 Chinese adults from the Beijing Physical Examination Center were included in the study. The partial least squares path model was used to explore the relationship between SU and metabolism-related risk factors. The generalized additive model was used for smooth curve fitting, showing the sex-specific associations of SU at follow-up with baseline fasting blood glucose (FBG) concentrations and age. Results The incidence density of hyperuricemia was 78/1000 person-years. Baseline SU, age, sex, obesity, FBG, and lipid metabolism were significantly associated with SU at follow-up (all P values <0.05). Non-linear relationships were found between the baseline FBG concentrations and SU at follow-up, while U-shaped associations were observed between baseline age and SU at follow-up. Conclusions The SU concentration is associated with several metabolism-related risk factors such as obesity and FBG. Recognition of these associations will aid in a deeper understanding of the multifaceted nature of SU regulation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS High blood pressure (BP) indices, including systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and pulse pressure (PP) predict cardiovascular diseases and mortality. However, the association of these BP indices with arterial stiffness (AS) in the normotensive population (BP < 120/80 mmHg) remains unclear. METHODS AND RESULTS Study participants who underwent health checkups at a tertiary referred center were recruited between November 2018 to December 2019. 2129 participants were enrolled after excluding those aged <18 years old, with elevated BP, history of hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and stroke, or with incomplete data. The brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) values were examined for evaluation of AS. Participants with higher blood pressure indices had significantly higher baPWV. Multiple linear regression revealed that all BP indices were positively associated with baPWV. According to the binary logistic regression analysis, participants in the higher SBP and MAP quartiles were significantly related to AS. The odds ratio (OR) for SBP Q2, Q3 and Q4 vs. Q1 were 6.06, 10.06 and 17.78 whereas the OR for MAP Q2, Q3 and Q4 vs. Q1 were: 5.07, 5.28 and 10.34. For DBP and PP, only participants belonging to the highest quartile were associated with AS(OR for DBP Q4 vs. Q1: 2.51; PP Q4 vs Q1: 1.94). CONCLUSIONS BP indices were linearly related to the baPWV. Normotensive participants with higher quartiles of SBP, DBP, MAP, and PP, remained associated with increased AS. The SBP and MAP levels exhibited a more prominent relationship with AS.

Abstract
Purpose We sought to identify distinct risk factors for hyperuricemia in native Tibetan and immigrant Han populations in Tibet, China. Methods Three cohorts of male participants aged between 20 and 40 years were enrolled in this study. Biochemical parameters including serum uric acid (UA), fasting plasma glucose, insulin, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), thyroxin, blood cell count, aminotransferase, and lipid profiles were analyzed. The association of risk factors with UA levels was evaluated using a multivariable line regression model. The effect of UA level on the biochemical parameters between the Hans and Tibetans was evaluated by two-way ANOVA. Results The prevalence of hyperuricemia (≥420 μmol/L) was 24.8% (62/250) in the Hans, similar to 23.8% (29/136) in the Tibetans. In the regression analysis, the risk factors that were significantly associated with UA in Hans did not apply to Tibetans. Tibetans had higher fasting insulin (P<0.05) and LDH (P<0.01) levels, in contrast with lower levels of triglycerides (P<0.05), total cholesterol (P<0.01), and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (P<0.01) than Hans in normal UA populations. Biochemistry analysis revealed lower albumin levels (P<0.001) and higher levels of all aminotransaminase and especially alkaline phosphatase (P<0.01) in Tibetans than in Hans in both populations. Compared with Hans, Tibetans had lower serum levels of urea, creatinine, and electrolytes in the normal UA population, which were further exacerbated in the high UA population. Tibetans had comparable white blood cell counts as Hans in both normal and high UA populations. In contrast, the red blood cell count and hemoglobin concentration were much lower in Tibetans than in Hans under high UA conditions. Conclusions The distinctive biochemistry between Tibetans and Hans may underlie the different etiologies of hyperuricemia in Tibet, China.

Abstract
Background Higher serum uric acid (SUA) can cause gout, which is principally characterized by arthritis due to monosodium urate crystal deposition in the lower extremities. High levels of SUA have been linked to endothelial dysfunction, oxidative stress, and inflammation, all of which are involved in the pathogenesis of peripheral artery disease(PAD). To date, the relationship between SUA levels and PAD is still poorly understood. Method An analysis of 9,839 Chinese adults with essential hypertension from the ongoing China H-type Hypertension Registry Study was conducted in this cross-sectional study. Patients with an ABI ≤0.9 was diagnosed with PAD. Hyperuricemia was defined as SUA levels >420 mol/L in men and >360 mol/L in women. The association between SUA levels and PAD was evaluated using multivariable logistic regression models based on odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results The enrolled subjects ranged in age from 27 to 93 years, with a mean age of 63.14 ± 8.99 years. The proportion of male patients was 46.22%, and the prevalence of hyperuricemia was 50.72%. In males, hyperuricemia was positively associated with the risk of PAD (adjusted OR per SD increase: 1.72, 95% CI 1.17 to 2.53, P =0.006). Males in the highest SUA tertile were significantly more likely to have PAD (adjusted OR: 2.63, 95% CI 1.42 to 4.86, P = 0.002; P for trend = 0.001). However, this positive relationship was not observed in females (adjusted OR: 1.29, 95% CI 0.77 to 2.17, P = 0.327; P for trend = 0.347). Conclusion According to this cross-sectional study, higher SUA levels were positively associated with PAD in male hypertensive patients, while this positive relationship disappeared in female participants.

Abstract
Hyperuricemia is reportedly associated with the progression of carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), a surrogate of cardiovascular risks and events. However, factors associated with carotid IMT progression in patients with asymptomatic hyperuricemia are largely unknown. In this post-hoc analysis of the multicenter, randomized PRIZE study, we analyzed data from a total of 326 patients who underwent carotid ultrasonography in a blind manner at baseline and 24 months to evaluate carotid IMT. Mean and maximum IMT at the common carotid artery (CCA) were measured at a central core laboratory. Factors related to the absolute change in mean and maximum IMT from baseline to 24 months were explored. Overall, the adjusted mean [0.0032 (- 0.0214 to 0.0278) mm] and maximum [0.0011 (- 0.0327 to 0.0351) mm] CCA-IMT increased numerically from baseline to 24 months. Multivariable analysis identified higher body mass index, history of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), and lower mean CCA-IMT at baseline as significant factors associated with the increase in mean CCA-IMT. In addition, older age and lower mean CCA-IMT at baseline were significant factors for an increased absolute change in the maximum CCA-IMT at 24 months. The present sub-analysis of the PRIZE study showed higher body mass index, history of ASCVD, and older age as significant factors associated with CCA-IMT progression in patients with asymptomatic hyperuricemia. These factors may be considered when identifying the possible risk of atherosclerotic progression in this specific patient population of hyperuricemia.Trial registration: UMIN000012911 and UMIN000041322.

Abstract
AIM OF THE STUDY To investigate the acute toxicity of Sanghuangporus ethanol extract (SHEE) on ICR mice and the underlying mechanism of anti-hyperuricemic renal injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS ICR mice were given a single gavage of 1250, 2500, and 5000 mg/kg SHEE, and the general behavior, mortality, body weight, dietary, and water intake were evaluated within 14 days to determine the acute toxicity level. The hyperuricemic kidney injury model in ICR mice was induced with potassium oxonate (PO) and adenine, and the mice were subsequently treated with SHEE (125, 250, 500 mg/kg). HE and hexamine silver staining (PASM) were used to observe the pathology of the kidney. Biochemical markers were tested by uric acid (UA), creatinine (Cr), blood urea nitrogen (BUN), xanthine oxidase (XOD), alanine transferase (ALT), and aspartate transaminase (AST) kits. An MTT assay was used to measure the effects of SHEE on the proliferation of HK-2 damaged by UA. Western blotting and RT-PCR were used to determine the expression of Bcl-2 family-related proteins and major UA transporters, including URAT1, GLUT9, OAT1, OAT3, and ABCG2, respectively. RESULTS Firstly, the acute toxicity study data showed that the median lethal dose (LD50) of SHEE was above 5000 mg/kg, and its oral administration was nontoxic at 2500 mg/kg and below. In addition, SHEE alleviated HUA and its renal injury in ICR mice. SHEE reduced the contents of UA, Cr, BUN and XOD in blood and the contents of ALT and AST in the liver. Furthermore, SHEE inhibited the expression of URAT1 and GLUT9 and promoted the expression of OAT1, OAT3, and ABCG2. More importantly, SHEE could downregulate the apoptosis level and caspase-3 activity. CONCLUSIONS Overall, an oral dose of SHEE below 2500 mg/kg is safe. SHEE inhibits HUA-induced kidney injury by regulating the UA transporters URAT1, GLUT9, OAT1, OAT3 and ABCG2 and inhibiting HK-2 apoptosis.

Abstract
The incidence of hyperuricemia and gout has been increasing year by year, and it is showing a younger trend. However, the first-line drugs currently used for hyperuricemia and gouty arthritis have serious side effects that limit their clinical application. Amomum villosum Lour. has been widely used in China for thousands of years as a traditional medical and edible plant, and previous screening showed that the ethanol extract of Amomum villosum Lour. could effectively inhibit the activity of xanthine oxidase. Based on this discovery, this paper had achieved in-depth mechanism research. The results showed that the ethanol extract of Amomum villosum Lour. could treat hyperuricemia by reducing the production of uric acid via inhibition of xanthine oxidase and increasing the excretion of uric acid via regulation of urate transporters. Meanwhile, the extract also showed a certain protective effect on hepatic and renal damage caused by hyperuricemia. With the formation of extensive uric acid, gouty arthritis will be induced by the deposition of monosodium urate in the joint. The extract could also relieve the inflammation by reducing the expression of inflammatory cytokines. In conclusion, the extract deserves focused research and development as a potential medicine, health care product or supplemented food for the prevention and treatment of hyperuricemia and gouty arthritis.

Abstract
Cellular cytoplasmic xanthine oxidase (XO)-mediated uric acid synthesis and extracellular excess uric acid exposure are both causes of cardiomyocytic injury under the condition of hyperuricemia (HUA). Potassium oxonate suppresses uric acid degradation to increase extracellular concentration, while hypoxanthine is the catalytic substrate of XO. We aimed to observe cardiac damage in a chronic HUA mouse model induced by potassium oxonate and hypoxanthine. The mouse model was established by the co-administration of potassium oxonate and hypoxanthine for eight weeks. Then, left ventricular parameters were examined by echocardiographic evaluation, and the heart tissues were harvested for further histopathological analysis. The results showed that plasma uric acid was persistently elevated in the model mice, which demonstrated the stable establishment of chronic HUA. The left ventricular anterior wall was significantly thickened in the model group compared with the blank control group. After the end of modeling, the left ventricular anterior wall thickness of the hyperuricemic mice increased compared with that of blank group. The histological analysis showed and myocardial structure disorganization in the model group compared with the blank control. The above cardiac impairment changes could be attenuated by allopurinol pretreatment. This study systematically assessed cardiac damage in a chronic HUA mouse model. In addition, it provides useful information for future HUA-associated heart injury mechanism investigation and therapeutic treatment evaluation.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of hyperuricemia (HUA) and associated risk factors in Chinese adults aged 18 to 59 years. All the data were collected from the China Nutrition and Health Surveillance during the period 2015–2017, which adopted a stratified, multistage, random sampling method on a national scale. A total of 52,627 participants aged 18 years or older were included in this study. The definition of hyperuricemia was 420 μmol/L for male and 360 μmol/L for female. The Rao–Scott chi-square test was used to compare the differences in prevalence between or among the subgroups. A weighted two-level multivariate survey-logistic regression was used to detect the correlations between HUA and demographic, physical, lifestyle and metabolic factors. The total prevalence of HUA was 15.1%, and that was higher in male, current smokers, higher BMI and less physical activities subgroups, and also in noninfectious chronic diseases (NCDs) subgroups. The subgroups of non-vegetarian diet, insufficient vegetable intakes and excessive red meat and alcohol intakes had significantly higher HUA prevalence. After introducing all the variables in the survey-logistic regression, gender, age, BMI, physically active, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, bean and nut intake, vegetable intake, red meat intake, alcohol consumption and vegetarian were associated with HUA. Among the significant variables, age and physical active served as a protective factor, and BMI showed to be a risk factor for HUA. Hypertension and dyslipidemia could increase the risk for HUA, while diabetes mellitus was shown a negative association with it. For dietary factors, vegetarian diet, sufficient beans and nuts and vegetables intake could lower the risk of HUA, but more alcohol could increase the risk of HUA. Dietary factor played a key role in HUA. It suggested that the intervention of dietary factor should receive more attention to ameliorate the high prevalence of HUA in China.

OBJECTIVES Several studies have demonstrated the association between gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT) and hyperuricaemia, but little is known about such relation in less-developed ethnic minority regions. DESIGN We cross-sectionally analysed data from the China Multi-Ethnic Cohort (Yunnan region). SETTING Cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS 22 020 participants aged 30-79 years from Han ethnicity, Yi ethnicity and Bai ethnicity. OUTCOMES The serum level of uric acid, GGT and other metabolic parameters were tested. Weight, height and blood pressure were measured. Smoking, drinking, ethnicity, education and medical history were obtained from questionnaires. RESULTS In the crude model, compared with the lowest quintile, the second, third, fourth and fifth quintiles of serum GGT exhibited a positive association with hyperuricaemia risk (OR=1.69, 2.90, 4.34 and 7.70, 95% CI=1.42 to 2.01, 2.47 to 3.42, 3.71 to 5.09 and 6.60 to 8.98, respectively, p-trend<0.0001). In fully adjusted model, compared with the lowest quintile, the second, third, fourth and fifth quintiles of serum GGT also exhibited a positive association with hyperuricaemia risk (OR=1.26, 1.68, 2.02 and 3.02, 95% CI=1.04 to 1.51, 1.40 to 2.00, 1.69 to 2.42 and 2.51 to 3.64, respectively, p-trend<0.0001). Logistic regression model was conducted separately in ethnic groups. Compared with first quintile, the highest GGT level were related to higher risk of hyperuricaemia in three ethnic groups (OR (95% CI): 2.89 (2.26 to 3.68), 2.81 (1.93 to 4.11) and 3.04 (1.91 to 4.84) for Han, Yi and Bai ethnicity, respectively, p-trend <0.0001). The relationship between GGT and hyperuricaemia was also observed in different age groups or gender groups. CONCLUSIONS High serum GGT level was related to a higher risk of hyperuricaemia in less-developed ethnic minority regions in China.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The diagnosis and follow-up of hypertension (HT) depend on the blood pressure measurements, which can be affected by several factors. In the present work, we aimed to explore the role of uric acid/HDL-cholesterol ratio (UHR) in HT and whether/or not it was associated with poor blood pressure control. METHODS In this retrospective cross-sectional cohort study, all the participants treated for hypertension and then followed up in the internal medicine clinics of our institution were enrolled. Hypertensive patients were grouped as either poorly or well-controlled hypertension groups, according to the suggestions of Joint National Committee VIII criteria and healthy volunteers were enrolled as control group. UHR of the study groups was compared. RESULTS Our study cohort consisted of 535 subjects; 258 in the well-controlled HT group, 186 in the poorly controlled HT group, and 91 in the control group. Median UHR levels of the poorly controlled HT group (13 (4-43) %) were significantly higher than well-controlled HT group 11 (4-22) %) and control group (8 (4-19) %) (p < 0.001). UHR was correlated with systolic (r = 0.33, p < 0.001) and diastolic (r = 0.28, p < 0.001) BP. UHR level greater than 11% has 70% sensitivity and 60% specificity in predicting poor BP control (AUC: 0.73, p < 0.001, 95%CI: 0.68-0.77). UHR was an independent risk factor for poor BP control in HT subjects and a unit elevation in UHR increased the risk of poorer BP control by 7.3 times (p < 0.001, 95%CI: 3.9-13.63). CONCLUSION Assessment of UHR may be useful in HT patients since elevated UHR levels could be associated with poor blood pressure control in this population.

Abstract
Cardiometabolic disease is a spectrum of diseases including, cardiovascular diseases, and metabolic syndrome. It is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with premature deaths being preventable. Currently, sleep has emerged as a potential target for cardiometabolic disease prevention. Several epidemiological studies have provided ample evidence that objectively measured short sleep duration increases the risk of cardiometabolic disease. However, the findings are inconsistent, and few studies measure sleep duration on cardiometabolic profiles objectively. Therefore, in this review, we focused on the recently published literature that explored the association between objectively measured sleep duration and cardiometabolic profiles (cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and metabolic syndrome), seeking more insights regarding the applicability and, in turn, the impact of objectively measured sleep duration on cardiometabolic health, which is relatively understudied. We retrieved the information manually from PubMed, Google Scholar, HINARI, and the Cochrane Library from 2015 to 2022 using appropriate search terms, we included 49 articles. In this review, we found a strong relationship between objectively measured sleep duration and the risk of cardiometabolic disease, indicating that objectively measured short sleep durations increase cardiometabolic risks. In general, the association between objectively measured sleep duration and increased cardiometabolic risks (CMR) has been well-documented in higher-income countries. Several studies found that longer sleep duration was associated with a more favorable cardiometabolic profile in early adolescence, independent of other risk factors. On the other hand, objectively measured short sleep duration is associated with adverse cardiometabolic health outcomes such as coronary heart disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and metabolic syndrome.

Abstract
Hyperuricemia (HU) has been associated with cardiovascular risk and metabolic syndrome (MS) worldwide. However, inconsistencies about this relation are still reported, and it is not clear whether hyperuricemia is an independent risk factor for MS. The aim of this study was to determine hyperuricemia associations with systemic hypertension and MS in women from northeast Brazil. The study included 301 women. Hyperuricemia was considered for serum uric acid (SUA) ≥6 mg/dL. Insulin resistance (IR) was measured by TyG index (TyG ≥ 4.55). Fisher test and Multivariate logistic regression analyses estimated the association between hyperuricemia (or SUA level) and systemic hypertension and MS. Hyperuricemia association with systemic hypertension was independent of age, body-mass index (BMI), smoking and alcoholism (OR: OR: 4.6050; p = .000256), and MS components (OR: 4.1296; IC95% 1.8330_9.3033; p = .000621). Hyperuricemia increased risk of systemic hypertension by 4,6 -fold. SUA level was associated with MS, independently of other classic component factors of the syndrome (OR:1.34, p = .0129). Hyperuricemia and high SUA levels were associated with MS and systemic hypertension. Effect of hyperuricemia in systemic hypertension is independent of age, BMI, lifestyle, and MS factors. SUA levels are independently associated with MS.

Abstract
Background and Purpose The association between the cardiometabolic index (CMI) and hyperuricemia was investigated to provide theoretical support for the management of hyperuricemia in an asymptomatic population with normal body mass index (BMI). Methods A cross-sectional study was carried out among 374 asymptomatic adults with normal BMI. Traditional anthropometric indices and CMI were calculated. Anthropometric indices were divided into four quartiles and multivariate logistic analysis was used to analyze the association between these indices and hyperuricemia. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and area under the curve (AUC) were used to evaluate the power of the indices to predict hyperuricemia values. The DeLong test was used to compare the AUC of different anthropometric indices. Results After adjusting for confounding variables, the CMI exhibited a stronger association with hyperuricemia than other anthropometric indices. The odds ratio (OR) for hyperuricemia in the highest quartile of the CMI was 16.674 (confidence interval [CI]=4.424–62.846). The AUC of the CMI was 0.777 (95% CI=0.719–0.835, p<0.001), which was higher than the values for other anthropometric indices. The differences in AUC between the CMI and other indices were statistically significant; the optimal cutoff value of the CMI was 0.655, with sensitivity of 57.1% and specificity of 84.2%. Conclusion The CMI, which combines waist circumference, height and blood lipid parameters, was more strongly associated with hyperuricemia than other anthropometric indices in asymptomatic population with normal BMI. The CMI may serve as a potential monitoring indicator for hyperuricemia management in asymptomatic populations with normal BMI.

Abstract
Uric acid (UA) is the final product of the catabolism of endogenous and exogenous purine nucleotides. While its association with articular gout and kidney disease has been known for a long time, new data have demonstrated that UA is also related to cardiovascular (CV) diseases. UA has been identified as a significant determinant of many different outcomes, such as all-cause and CV mortality, and also of CV events (mainly Acute Coronary Syndromes (ACS) and even strokes). Furthermore, UA has been related to the development of Heart Failure, and to a higher mortality in decompensated patients, as well as to the onset of atrial fibrillation. After a brief introduction on the general role of UA in CV disorders, this review will be focused on UA's relationship with CV outcomes, as well as on the specific features of patients with ACS and Chronic Coronary Syndrome. Finally, two issues which remain open will be discussed: the first is about the identification of a CV UA cut-off value, while the second concerns the possibility that the pharmacological reduction of UA is able to lower the incidence of CV events.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Women in different age phases have different metabolism and hormone levels that influence the production and excretion of uric acid. We aimed to investigate the prevalence and related factors of hyperuricaemia among women in various age phases. STUDY DESIGN Observational, cross-sectional study. SETTING Data were obtained from women at three health check-up centres in Shanghai. PARTICIPANTS Adult women from three health check-up centres were recruited. Exclusion criteria were individuals with pregnancy, cancer, incomplete information. Finally, 11 601 participants were enrolled. RESULTS The prevalence rates of hyperuricaemia of total subjects were 11.15% (95% CIs 10.57% to 11.72%). The prevalence of hyperuricaemia in 18-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60-69 and ≥70 years old was 6.41% (95% CI 4.97% to 7.86%), 5.63% (4.71% to 6.55%), 6.02% (5.01%% to 7.03%), 11.51% (10.19% to 12.82%), 16.49% (15.03% to 17.95%) and 23.98% (21.56% to 26.40%), respectively. Compared with 18-29 years old, the ORs for hyperuricaemia in other age phases were 0.870 (95% CI 0.647 to 1.170, p=0.357), 0.935 (0.693 to 1.261, p=0.659), 1.898 (1.444 to 2.493, p<0.001), 2.882 (2.216 to 3.748, p<0.001) and 4.602 (3.497 to 6.056, p<0.001), respectively. During the 18-29 years old, the related factors for hyperuricaemia were obesity and dyslipidaemia. During the 30-59 years old, the related factors were obesity, dyslipidaemia, hypertension and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Over the 60 years old, the occurrence of hyperuricaemia was mainly affected by obesity, dyslipidaemia and CKD, while hypertension cannot be an impact factor for hyperuricaemia independently of obesity and dyslipidaemia. CONCLUSION After 50 years old, the prevalence of hyperuricaemia in Shanghai women has increased significantly and reaches the peak after 70. Obesity and dyslipidaemia are two main related factors for hyperuricaemia during all ages, while diabetes mellitus and nephrolithiasis have no relationship with hyperuricaemia throughout. CKD is an independent impact factor for hyperuricaemia after 30 years old.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the relationship between asymptomatic target organ damage (TOD) and different somatotypes in a population of elderly from Chinese community-dwelling. Methods A total of 2098 Chinese senior residents from northern Shanghai older than 65 years were recruited in the research. The following somatotype parameters were recorded and analyzed: body mass index, waist circumference, hip circumference, and waist-hip ratio were recorded and calculated. Asymptomatic TOD, including urine albumin/creatinine ratio, estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), intima-media thickness (IMT), left ventricular mass index (LVMI), left ventricular diastolic function, and carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV) was recorded using the MyLab30 Gold CV system and SphygmoCor. Results Of all 2098 residents, 817 (38.9%) were overweight and 289 (13.8%) were obese. All somatotype measures were significantly correlated with TOD parameters (p<0.05). After adjustment for age and male gender, in total population, LVMI (p<0.001), cardiac diastolic function (E/Ea, p<0.001), PWV (p<0.001), eGFR (p=0.03), and urine albumin/creatinine ratio (p<0.001) changed gradually and significantly correlated with increasing BMI values. Obesity and overweight were independently related to the incidence of LVH, LVDD, artery stiffness, carotid arterial plaque, and microalbuminuria. Conclusion The incidence of asymptomatic TOD was significantly correlated with overweight and obesity, especially in women, whereas the underweight may favor in the prevention of TOD.

Abstract
Background Hyperuricemia is related not only to an increased risk of gouty arthritis but also to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, resistant hypertension, insulin resistance and progression of type 2 diabetes mellitus. However, to the best of our knowledge, the prevalence of hyperuricemia and its associated factors have rarely been assessed in Ethiopian populations. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the prevalence of hyperuricemia and its associated factors among adult staff members of the Ethiopian Public Health Institute. Methods An institution-based cross-sectional study was conducted from July 1 to October 28, 2018. A total of 402 study participants were selected using a simple random sampling technique. An interviewer-administered questionnaire was used to collect the data. A blood sample of approximately 5 mL was collected from each study participant after overnight fasting through standardized methods for biochemical tests, and analyses were carried out with an automated COBAS 6000 analyzer. Data analysis was performed by SPSS version 20 software. The factors associated with the outcome variable were identified by bivariable and multivariable logistic regression analyses, and a p value <0.05 was used to declare statistical significance. Results The mean age of the study participants was 37.13±10.5 (mean ± SD), and 51.5% of the participants were male. The overall prevalence of hyperuricemia (>5.7 mg/dL for females and >7 mg/dL for males) was found to be 31.0%. The multivariable logistic analysis revealed that age (AOR=1.59, 95% CI 1.01–2.78), sex (AOR=1.66, 95% CI 1.02–2.70), cigarette smoking (AOR=2.05, 95% CI 1.01–4.19) and serum low-density lipoprotein (LDL) (AOR=1.70, 95% CI 1.01–2.87) were significantly associated with hyperuricemia. Conclusion The prevalence of hyperuricemia was relatively high compared to similar studies. Early screening for hyperuricemia in the general population, especially in those who are smokers, of older age and with high serum LDL levels, is vital to control its adverse effects at an early stage.

Abstract
Background In China, the prevalence of HUA in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region of Guangdong Province has not been extensively investigated. Therefore, this study investigated the prevalence of HUA and its related factors among people aged 20–99 years in nine cities in the PRD. Materials and Methods We selected 6491 health check participants from 9 cities in the PRD and collected participants’ anthropometric and biochemical test results for a cross-sectional study. We included 6491 participants and assessed their blood pressure (BP), body mass index (BMI), total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), glucose (Glu) and serum uric acid (UA) to analyze the regional prevalence of HUA and its related factors. HUA was indicated when fasting serum UA level was >420 μmol/L in men and >360 μmol/L in women. Results Overall prevalence of HUA in our cohort was 34.05%; prevalence was higher in men than in women (41.53% vs 26.14%, P < 0.001). Characteristics associated with HUA were hypertension (odds ratio (OR), 5.506; 95% confidence interval (CI), 4.402–6.889), higher body mass index (BMI; OR: 1.746; 95% CI: 1.560–1.954), age 31–40 years (OR: 0.829; 95% CI: 0.706–0.973), age 61–70 years (OR: 1.434; 95% CI: 1.194–1.722) and age ≥71 years (OR: 1.742; 95% CI: 1.397–2.173). In all subjects, serum UA was positively correlated with Glu, TG and TC. After we adjusted for age, BMI and BP, multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that HUA risk factors were high TC (OR: 1.770; 95% CI: 1.459–2.147) and TG (OR: 1.961; 95% CI: 1.632–2.357) in men; and high Glu (OR: 1.508; 95% CI: 1.084–2.099), TC (OR: 1.341; 95% CI: 1.084–1.660) and TG (OR: 1.680; 95% CI: 1.290–2.187) in women. Conclusion The prevalence of HUA was relatively high in the PRD of Guangdong Province. Relevant governmental bodies should focus on early diagnosis, early treatment and early intervention.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Patients with diabetes are at higher risk of the negative consequences of hyperuricemia. The objective of this study was to investigate gender and age-specific differences in the uric acid levels and to evaluate the associated risk factors among patients with diabetes. METHODS A retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted at Strategic Center for Diabetes Research from September 2019 to January 2020, among adult type-2 diabetic patients. Serum uric acid (SUA) and several other metabolic and clinical parameters were examined. Multiple regression analysis was done to identify risk factors independently associated with hyperuricemia. RESULTS A total of 433 patients were included in the analysis. SUA level was higher in males than females (5.82±1.65 mg/dL versus 5.29±1.54 mg/dL, p < 0.001). The prevalence of hyperuricemia was higher in females than males (28.8% versus 20.5%, p = 0.049). There was no significant difference in uric acid levels or the prevalence of hyperuricemia by age groups in the total sample or gender-stratified samples. In multivariate analysis, hyperuricemia was associated with bigger hip circumference (odds ratios [OR] were 1.03, 95% CI = 1.01-1.05), higher triglycerides (OR = 1.005, 95% CI = 1.002-1.008), and higher serum creatinine (OR = 1.34, 95% CI = 1.21-1.49). Hip circumference, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, and serum creatinine were independent risk factors in males, while triglycerides and higher serum creatinine were independent risk factors among females. CONCLUSION The present study demonstrates gender-specific differences in the uric acid levels and hyperuricemia prevalence. In males and females, hyperuricemia was associated with hip circumference, total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein, triglycerides, and serum creatinine. Future large studies are needed to confirm our findings, especially in elderly females.
