Abstract
AIMS Findings of prior investigations on the association between calcium intake and lipid profiles were inconsistent. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis on epidemiologic studies to evaluate the relationship of dietary calcium intake with blood lipids and lipoproteins. DATA SYNTHESIS A systematic search up to April 2021 was performed in different electronic databases, including MEDLINE (PubMed), Scopus, Web of Science (ISI), and Google Scholar for epidemiological studies that considered dietary calcium intake as the exposure and reported risk of dyslipidemia or blood lipids and lipoproteins concentrations (as mean ± SD or mean ± SE or median (Inter Quartile Range) as the outcomes of interest in adult populations from both genders (18 years or older), regardless of their health status. Nineteen cross-sectional studies were included in the analysis. Combining estimates from 11 studies (including 33,304 subjects) revealed that individuals in the highest category of calcium intake, compared to the lowest one, had 5.94 mg/dL lower circulating triglyceride (TG) concentration (weighted mean difference (WMD): -5.94; 95% CI: -8.27, -3.62), 4.02 mg/dL lower circulating low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c) levels (WMD: -4.02; 95% CI: -7.08, -0.95), and 1.56 mg/dL higher blood high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) (WMD: 1.56; 95% CI: 0.81, 2.30). Although meta-analysis on 13 studies (including 38,714 participants) did not reveal a significant relationship between dietary calcium intake and odds of dyslipidemia or hyperlipidemia in the whole population, the highest vs. lowest level of calcium intake was related to 42% decreased odds of low blood HDL-c levels in females (95% CI: 0.40, 0.84) and 41% increased odds in males (95% CI: 1.21, 1.65). CONCLUSIONS This meta-analysis demonstrated that individuals with the highest dietary calcium intake might have lower blood TG, LDL-c, and higher HDL-c concentrations as compared to those with the lowest calcium intake. However, the linkage between dietary calcium intake with odds of hyperlipidemia or dyslipidemia was not significant. Because of the cross-sectional nature of included studies, causality could not be proven. Further prospective studies are needed to affirm these findings.

Abstract
Several epidemiological studies investigated the relation of Ca intake with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), but there were inconsistencies in their findings. So, we conducted a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis to quantify the relation of dietary Ca intake with the risk of T2DM/hyperglycemia in adults. A systematic search was conducted up to May 2021, in MEDLINE (Pubmed), Web of Science (WOS), Scopus electronic databases and Google Scholar, for epidemiological studies that investigated the relation of dietary Ca intake (as the exposure) and T2DM/hyperglycemia (as the outcome) in adults, without restriction in publication date and language. Finally, 8 cohort and 9 cross-sectional studies were included in the analysis. The body of evidence was assessed by the GRADE approach. Combining effect sizes from prospective cohort studies included 255,744 general adult population illustrated that highest level of dietary Ca intake, compared to lowest category, was related to an 18% reduced risk of T2DM (RR: 0.82; 95% CI 0.74-0.92). Based on linear dose-response analysis (including 255,744 healthy individuals and 13,531 patients with T2DM), each 300, 600 and 1000 mg/day increment in dietary Ca intake was respectively associated to 7, 14 and 23% reduced risk of T2DM. There was a steeper reduction in risk of T2DM when dietary Ca intake increased from low levels to 750 mg/day. Nevertheless, meta-analysis of cross-sectional studies revealed an inverse significant association between dietary Ca intake and T2DM/hyperglycemia only in the female population (OR: 0.66; 95% CI 0.50-0.88). This meta-analysis illustrated an inverse association between dietary Ca intake and risk of T2DM in general adult populations in prospective cohort studies, in a dose-response manner. It seems that increasing dietary Ca intake from low levels to around 750 mg/day was inversely related to risk of T2DM. In cross-sectional studies, an inverse relation between dietary Ca intake and T2DM/hyperglycemia was found only in females.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) and anthropometric predictive equations have been proposed to estimate whole-body (SMM) and appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) as surrogate for dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in distinct population groups. However, their accuracy in estimating body composition in non-dialysis dependent patients with chronic kidney disease (NDD-CKD) and kidney transplant recipients (KTR) is unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the accuracy and reproducibility of BIA and anthropometric predictive equations in estimating SMM and ASM compared to DXA, in NDD-CKD patients and KTR. METHODS A cross-sectional study including adult NDD-CKD patients and KTR, with body mass index (BMI) ≥18.5 kg/m2. ASM and estimated SMM were evaluated by DXA, BIA (Janssen, Kyle and MacDonald equations) and anthropometry (Lee and Baumgartner equations). Low muscle mass (LowMM) was defined according to cutoffs proposed by guidelines for ASM, ASM/height2 and ASM/BMI. The best performing equation as surrogate for DXA, considering both groups of studied patients, was defined based in the highest Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (CCC) value, the lowest Bland-Altman bias (<1.5 kg) combined with the narrowest upper and lower limits of agreement (LoA), and the highest Cohen's kappa values for the low muscle mass diagnosis. RESULTS Studied groups comprised NDD-CKD patients (n = 321: males = 55.1%; 65.4 ± 13.1 years; eGFR = 28.8 ± 12.7 ml/min) and KTR (n = 200: males = 57.7%; 47.5 ± 11.3 years; eGFR = 54.7 ± 20.7 ml/min). In both groups, the predictive equations presenting the best accuracy compared to DXA were SMM-BIA-Janssen (NDD-CKD patients: CCC = 0.88, 95%CI = 0.83-0.92; bias = 0.0 kg; KTR: CCC = 0.89, 95%CI = 0.86-0.92, bias = -1.2 kg) and ASM-BIA-Kyle (NDD-CKD patients: CCC = 0.87, 95%CI = 0.82-0.90, bias = 0.7 kg; KTR: CCC = 0.89, 95%CI = 0.86-0.92, bias = -0.8 kg). In NDD-CKD patients and KTR, LowMM frequency was similar according to ASM-BIA-Kyle versus ASM-DXA. The reproducibility and inter-agreement to diagnose LowMM using ASM/height2 and ASM/BMI estimated by BIA-Kyle equation versus DXA was moderate (kappa: 0.41-0.60), in both groups. Whereas female patients showed higher inter-agreement (AUC>80%) when ASM/BMI index was used, male patients presented higher AUC (70-74%; slightly <80%) for ASM/height2 index. CONCLUSIONS The predictive equations with best performance to assess muscle mass in both NDD-CKD patients and KTR was SMM-BIA by Janssen and ASM-BIA by Kyle. The reproducibility to diagnose low muscle mass, comparing BIA with DXA, was high using ASM/BMI in females and ASM/height2 in males in both groups.

Association between Dietary Calcium Intake and Adiposity in Male Adolescents. Nutrients 2019; 11:nu11071454. Abstract
The aim was to investigate the possible association of dietary calcium intake with adiposity, insulin resistance, and adipocytokine values in adolescent boys. In this cross-sectional study, participants were 123 adolescent boys aged 13–15 years, who were divided into tertiles according to their dietary calcium intake. Dietary calcium intake was assessed using three 24 h dietary recalls. In addition, energy intake, body composition, physical activity (PA), and blood biochemical values were also measured. Mean body fat%, fat mass (FM), trunk FM, trunk fat%, and leptin differed between high and low tertiles of calcium intake after adjustment for age, pubertal stage, and PA. For the entire cohort, mean calcium intake was 786 ± 380 mg/day and was related to body mass index (BMI), FM, and trunk fat% but not to insulin resistance or adipocytokine values after adjusting for possible confounders. In addition, only 15.4% of the participants obtained or exceeded their mean dietary calcium intake requirements. These subjects who met their dietary calcium intake had significantly lower body fat% in comparison with subjects not meeting their dietary calcium intake. Odds ratio of being in the highest tertile of FM, trunk FM, and trunk fat% was 3.2–4.4 (95% confidence interval 1.19–12.47; p < 0.05) times higher for boys in low calcium intake tertile, compared to those boys in high calcium intake tertile. In conclusion, dietary calcium intake is inversely associated with total body and abdominal adiposity values in a specific group of healthy male adolescents with different body mass values.

Abstract
Since the dawn of time human beings have been trying to improve the quality of the existence and extend their lifespan. Genetic, environmental, behavioral and dietary factors influence the pathways that regulate aging and life expectancy, thus rendering longevity a very complex phenomenon. Although a long-lived elixir has not yet been found, physicians and scientists agree that nutrition has a major impact on the overall mortality and morbidity, hence becoming the subject of a widespread scientific research. This review describes, analyzes and compares the effects of different types of diets in reducing the onset of typical Western countries non-communicable diseases (NCDs) (cardiovascular diseases, tumors, chronic respiratory diseases, diabetes, etc.), thus increasing the average lifespan. It will first depict the most relevant characteristics, nutraceutical properties and effects on the populations of the Mediterranean, Japanese, Vegetarian and New Nordic Diet. Finally, it will describe the impact of different dietary restrictions in modulating the genetic pathways that regulate metabolism and aging. Overall, this work reinforces the evidence that specific eating habits, in addition to healthy and active lifestyles, are crucial to increase people’s health span and to achieve an optimal longevity.

Abstract
Influences of minerals, oligo- and trace elements on the concentration of biomarkers of the metabolic syndrome (MetS) are reviewed. Since food is a complex mixture of caloric compounds and essential non-caloric food components with multiple interactions and varying bioavailability, it is hard to separate or identify the effect of one single component in a total meal or diet. Moreover the diet contains various non-nutritive biologically active components, which may add some beneficial characteristics. Therefore, conclusions on the effect of components on various biomarkers of MetS are sometimes quite contradictory. Reasons therefore are mentioned. Literature data should be studied in detail to conclude whether a component is related to a reduction of MetS-related symptoms or whether its influence is merely affecting a biomarker.

Abstract
Calcium (Ca(2+)) is an essential ligand that binds its primary intracellular receptor calmodulin (CaM) to trigger a variety of downstream processes and pathways. Central to the actions of Ca(2+)/CaM is the activation of a highly conserved Ca(2+)/CaM kinase (CaMK) cascade that amplifies Ca(2+) signals through a series of subsequent phosphorylation events. Proper regulation of Ca(2+) flux is necessary for whole-body metabolism and disruption of Ca(2+) homeostasis has been linked to various metabolic diseases. Here we provide a synthesis of recent advances that highlight the roles of the Ca(2+)/CaMK axis in key metabolic tissues. An appreciation of this information is critical to understanding the mechanisms by which Ca(2+)/CaM-dependent signaling contributes to metabolic homeostasis and disease.

Abstract
A number of epidemiological studies have implicated calcium (Ca(2+)) signaling as a major factor in obesity that contributes to aberrant systems metabolism. Somewhat paradoxically, obesity correlates with decreased circulating Ca(2+) levels, leading to increased release of intracellular Ca(2+) stores from the endoplasmic reticulum. These findings suggest that insulin resistance associated with the obese state is linked to activation of canonical Ca(2+) signaling pathways. Mechanistically, increased intracellular Ca(2+) binds calmodulin (CaM) to activate a set of Ca(2+)/CaM-dependent protein kinases. In this research resource, we explore the metabolic functions and implications of Ca(2+)/CaM-dependent protein kinase kinase 2 (CaMKK2) as a metabolic effector of Ca(2+)/CaM action. We reveal the importance of CaMKK2 for gating insulin release from pancreatic β-cells while concomitantly influencing the sensitivity of insulin-responsive tissues. To provide a better understanding of the metabolic impact of CaMKK2 loss, we performed targeted metabolomic analyses of key metabolic byproducts of glucose, fatty acid, and amino acid metabolism in mice null for CaMKK2. We quantified amino acids and acyl carnitines in 3 insulin-sensitive tissues (liver, skeletal muscle, plasma) isolated from CaMKK2(-/-) mice and their wild-type littermates under conditions of dietary stress (low-fat diet, normal chow, high-fat diet, and fasting), thereby unveiling unique metabolic functions of CaMKK2. Our findings highlight CaMKK2 as a molecular rheostat for insulin action and emphasize the importance of Ca(2+)/CaM/CaMKK2 in regulation of whole-body metabolism. These findings reveal that CaMKK2 may be an attractive therapeutic target for combatting comorbidities associated with perturbed insulin signaling.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels, are the leading cause of death globally. An estimated 17.1 million people die of CVDs each year, more than 40% of whom die from coronary heart disease (CHD). Hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor for increasing CHD morbidity and mortality, and serum cholesterol level is a key predictor of CHD development. A number of studies have demonstrated that calcium supplement can lower serum cholesterol levels, which means that calcium might play an important role in preventing the development of CVDs, especially CHD. In this paper, the mechanisms of calcium intake in lowering serum cholesterol levels are summarized, including increasing the excretion of bile acids, interfering with cholesterol absorption, inhibiting the absorption of saturated fatty acids, promoting energy metabolism, regulating plasma 1,25(OH)2D levels, affecting blood insulin sensibility and controlling appetite.

Abstract
Dietary or supplemental calcium intake has long been encouraged for optimal bone health. However, more recently, the safety of calcium supplementation has been questioned because of a possible association between supplemental calcium and cardiovascular risk. Whereas calcium may have a beneficial or neutral effect on cardiovascular risk factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol, weight, and diabetes, available evidence does not provide a definitive answer for an association with cardiovascular disease (CVD). To date, no calcium trials have studied cardiovascular disease as a primary end point, and larger trials with longer follow-up are needed. In this review, we present results from observational studies and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that have evaluated calcium intake (dietary or supplemental) in relation to cardiovascular risk factors and cardiovascular disease as a secondary outcome. Results from RCTs are mixed regarding CVD risk in those using supplemental calcium with or without vitamin D, and more large-scale randomized trials designed specifically with CVD as the primary end point are needed. Evidence suggests that it is reasonable to encourage adequate dietary calcium intake, especially for postmenopausal women who are at greatest risk for osteoporotic fracture.

Abstract
SCOPE Gut peptides regulate appetite and adipogenesis. Early weaning (EW) leads to later development of obesity that can be prevented by calcium supplementation. We evaluated gut peptides that may have a role in the establishment of this dysfunction. METHODS AND RESULTS At birth, lactating Wistar rats were separated in: EW, lactating rats involved with a bandage interrupting the lactation during the last 4 days of standard lactation, and C (control) dams whose pups had free access to milk during throughout lactation. At 120 days old, half of EW group received calcium supplementation (EWCa); EW and C received standard diet. At 21 days old, EW presented higher glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) in plasma and glucagon-like peptide 1 receptor (GLP1-R) in adipose tissue and hypothalamus, but lower GLP-1 and GLP1-R in the gut. At 180 days old, GLP-1 response to food intake was blunted in EW and restored by calcium. GLP-1 in the gut was lower in EW and its receptor was lower in adipose tissue, and GLP1-R was higher in the gut of calcium EW group. CONCLUSION Thus, EW had short- and long-term effects upon GLP-1 profile, which may have contributed to obesity development, hyperphagia, and insulin resistance due to its adipogenic and appetite control roles. Calcium supplementation was able to prevent most of the changes in GLP-1 caused by EW.

Abstract
Rapid changes in Thailand's nutrition and lifestyles have led to increasing diet-related pathologies among people with sedentary occupations. This study examines the extent to which the dietary intake of nutrients and energy by a sample of Thai sedentary workers conforms to the Thai Dietary Reference Intakes (Thai DRIs). The nutrients and energy intake estimates were based on self-reported information collected with a single 24-hour dietary recall and nonweighed 2-day food record. The study participants were Thai adults aged 20-50 years employed in sedentary occupations. A convenience sample of 215 healthy individuals (75 males and 140 females) was based on four randomly selected worksites in the Bangkok metropolitan area. For male participants, the study found a median energy intake of 1,485 kcal/day, with 54.4% of energy coming from carbohydrate, 15.9% from protein, and 29.6% from fat. Females' median energy intake was 1,428 kcal/day, 56% of which came from carbohydrate, 16.2% from protein, and 28.6% from fat. Both genders showed insufficient intake of fiber and most micronutrients. This study provides the material for preventive public health interventions focusing on nutrition-related diseases affecting Thailand's rapidly growing sedentary workforce.

Abstract
Background Numerous studies have reported that low calcium intake is related to a higher prevalence of cardiovascular disease. However, the relationship between serum calcium and coronary heart disease is unclear. The purpose of this study was to compare serum calcium levels in patients with coronary heart disease and those in healthy individuals. Methods This retrospective, case-control study conducted in the People’s Republic of China comprised 380 cases and 379 controls. Serum calcium levels, blood lipids, and anthropometric measurements were measured in both groups. The Student’s unpaired t-test or Chi-square test was used to compare differences between cases and controls. Pearson’s partial correlation coefficient was used to determine the association between serum calcium, blood lipids, and blood pressure in both groups. Results Our results indicate that the average level of serum calcium in cases was higher than in controls. Serum calcium levels showed no correlation with any parameter except for triglycerides in either group. Conclusion Overall, these data suggest that serum calcium has no influence on coronary heart disease or triglyceride levels in the general population.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Low calcium:phosphorus ratios (Ca:P ratio) in habitual diet have been observed worldwide, and it has been shown to be harmful to the bone health of the population. However, no study associating this ratio with obesity was found. Thus, considering that the intake of calcium and phosphorus will generate a ratio between them, which may be associated with obesity, this research seeks at evaluating the relation between obesity and the Ca:P ratio in the habitual diet of adults. METHODS Cross-sectional population-based epidemiological study with stratified and systematic sampling. The sample was composed of 506 adults, aged between 18 and 60 years, of both genders. Information on socioeconomic and demographic conditions was obtained through questionnaires completed during home visits, where anthropometric and dietary evaluations were also conducted. RESULTS In the habitual diet consumed by the study subjects, a Ca:P ratio above the median of 0.57 reduced the risk of central obesity based on waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) (OR: 0.61; 95% CI: 0.41 - 0.92). Habitual dietary intake of calcium (OR: 0.65; 95% CI: 0.43 - 0.97) and dairy products (OR: 0.56; 95% CI: 0.37 - 0.84) above the median value (485.4 mg and 0.9 servings, respectively) was found to be a protective factor related to central obesity based on WHtR. CONCLUSIONS Values above the median for the Ca:P ratio found in the habitual diet were negatively associated with central obesity based on WHtR. In addition, calcium and dairy consumption were negatively associated with central obesity based on WHtR. Therefore, higher Ca:P ratios contributed to a lower prevalence of central obesity.

Abstract
Previous studies revealed that low calcium intake is related to high prevalence of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension. However, the relationship between serum calcium and blood pressure was unclear. The prevalence of hypertension is high in China. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the serum calcium level between hypertensive and normotensive groups and to investigate the correlation between serum calcium, blood pressure, and blood lipid parameters. A total of 1,135 adult subjects participated in this study and were divide into two study groups: a hypertensive group (n = 316) who had 140 mmHg or higher in systolic blood pressure (SBP) or 90 mmHg or higher in diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and an age- and sex-matched normotensive group (n = 819, 120 mmHg or less SBP and 80 mmHg or less DBP). Our results indicate a significant trend for men (60 years old or older) in the direction of decreasing blood pressure with increasing serum calcium level, but no trend for women was indicated. In the normotensive group, a significant positive correlation was found between DBP and total cholesterol (P < 0.01) and triglyceride (P < 0.01), Likewise, triglyceride was positively correlated with SBP (P < 0.01). Overall, these data suggest that serum calcium may have an influence in the blood pressure of older male subjects with hypertension and in blood lipid profiles of normotensive subjects.

Abstract
Recent studies have suggested that dietary Ca may have beneficial effects on adiposity, insulin resistance, dyslipidaemia and blood pressure (BP). One potential mechanism underlying these benefits involves modifications in intracellular Ca concentration ([Ca2+]i). The present study aimed to evaluate the associations of dietary Ca with adiposity, erythrocyte [Ca2+]i, metabolic profile, BP, inflammatory state and endothelial function in healthy pre-menopausal women. In the present cross-sectional study, seventy-six women aged 18–50 years were submitted to the evaluation of dietary intake, anthropometric parameters, body composition, erythrocyte [Ca2+]i, biochemical variables, endothelial function and BP. A FFQ was used to assess usual dietary intake. Endothelial function was evaluated by serum concentrations of adhesion molecules and by the peripheral arterial tonometry (PAT) method, using Endo-PAT 2000®. Participants were allocated into two groups according to Ca intake: low-Ca group (LCG; n 32; < 600 mg/d) and high-Ca group (HCG; n 44; ≥ 600 mg/d). Women in the LCG compared with those in the HCG exhibited, after adjustments for potential confounders, higher values of BMI, waist circumference, waist:height ratio, percentage of body fat, insulin, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, leptin, diastolic and mean BP; and lower levels of HDL-cholesterol, adiponectin and vascular cell adhesion molecule 1. Endothelial function assessed by PAT and [Ca2+]i was similar in both groups. Subjects in the HCG had lower OR for prevalent overweight, obesity, abdominal obesity, insulin resistance, HDL-cholesterol < 600 mg/l and systolic BP >120 mmHg. The findings of the present study suggest that high Ca intake is inversely associated with some cardiovascular risk factors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the effect of the fatty acid-binding protein (FABP2) gene Ala54Thr polymorphism on anthropometric and biochemical variables in response to a moderate-fat diet in overweight or obese subjects. METHODS One hundred nine subjects with a body mass index ≥ 25 kg/m(2) were studied. Participants underwent a dietary intervention that consisted of 30% fat (saturated fat <7% of total calories), 15% protein, and 55% carbohydrates. The FABP2 genotypes were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. Anthropometric and biochemical data were measured at baseline, 1 mo, and 2 mo of nutritional intervention. RESULTS The mean age was 38.6 ± 11.3 y and the mean body mass index 32.7 ± 6.1 kg/m(2), with 20 men (18%) and 89 women (82%). Fifty-three patients (48.6%) had genotype Ala54Ala (wild-type group) and 56 patients had genotype Ala54Thr/Thr54Thr (51.4%, mutant group). At baseline, no significant difference was found between the FABP2 genotypes groups, except for the carbohydrate intake and resting metabolic rate, which were higher in the Ala54Thr/Thr54Thr group (P < 0.05). At 2 mo, participants had lost 6.8% of their initial weight. The Ala54Thr/Thr54Thr group compared with the Ala54Ala group showed significant decreases in the parameters of weight (-7.5 versus -4.2 kg), body mass index (-2.1 versus -1.2 kg/m(2)), waist circumference (-7.6 versus -5.2 cm), waist-to-hip ratio (-0.04 versus -0.02), and C-reactive protein (-1.4 versus -0.76 mg/L), respectively (P < 0.05). After the resting metabolic rate was adjusted, the decreases in waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio, and C-reactive protein remained significant between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS This study showed that the Thr54 allele carriers responded better to a moderate-fat diet.

Abstract
Dietary intervention is an important approach in the prevention of cardiovascular disease. Over the last decade, some studies have suggested that a calcium-rich diet could help to control body weight, with anti-obesity effects. The potential mechanism underlying the impact of calcium on body fat has been investigated, but it is not fully understood. Recent evidence has also suggested that a calcium-rich diet could have beneficial effects on other cardiovascular risk factors, such as insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, hypertension and inflammatory states. In a series of studies, it was observed that a high intake of milk and/or dairy products (the main sources of dietary calcium) is associated with a reduction in the relative risk of cardiovascular disease. However, a few studies suggest that supplemental calcium (mainly calcium carbonate or citrate) may be associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events. This review will discuss the available evidence regarding the relationship between calcium intake (dietary and supplemental) and different cardiovascular risk factors and/or events.
