Abstract
BACKGROUND Plant-based diets have been widely promoted for their health and environmental benefits. However, the health benefits may differ by the quality (i.e. healthiness) of plant foods, and few studies have specifically evaluated the association of plant-based diets with mortality in Black and low-income Americans who disproportionately experience poor health outcomes. OBJECTIVES We aimed to examine associations of plant-based dietary patterns with all-cause and cause-specific mortality in the Southern Community Cohort Study, a population-based prospective cohort conducted among predominantly Black and low-income Americans. METHODS Included in this study were 77,797 participants. Plant-based dietary patterns were assessed by established indices [i.e. overall plant-based diet index (PDI), healthy plant-based diet index (hPDI), unhealthy plant-based diet index (uPDI)] based on dietary intakes collected using a validated food frequency questionnaire at baseline (2002-2009). Mortality data were ascertained through 2022. Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for associations of PDI, hPDI, and uPDI with mortality from all, cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer, and other nonexternal causes, adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 16.6 y, 27,269 deaths were identified. Compared with the lowest quintile, the highest quintile of PDI (HR = 0.87, 95% CI: 0.81, 0.93) and hPDI (HR = 0.82, 95% CI: 0.76, 0.89) was associated with reduced all-cause mortality (both Ptrend < 0.001). In contrast, a high uPDI was linked to elevated all-cause mortality (HR = 1.17, 95% CI: 1.08, 1.26 for the highest compared with lowest quintile, Ptrend < 0.001). Similar associations were observed for mortality from CVD and other causes. We also identified significant multiplicative interactions between hPDI and a composite measure of nondietary lifestyles in reducing all-cause and CVD mortality. CONCLUSIONS Adherence to a diet characterized by healthy plant foods and low animal foods may decrease mortality.

Abstract
Snakebites from the Bothrops genus are a public health issue in Brazil, particularly in the most affected rural areas. Traditional medicinal plants offer potential complementary therapies for mitigating the damages caused by Bothrops envenomation. This review summarizes current research on the antiophidic potential in medicinal plants and its secondary metabolites to neutralize Bothrops venom effects. A comprehensive literature search was conducted to identify studies detailing the biochemical mechanisms and pharmacological effects of plant-based secondary metabolites, including polyphenols, saponins, quinones, sulfated polysaccharides, steroids, coumarins, alkaloids, and coumestans, on venom-induced pathologies. Polyphenols, particularly flavonoids, exhibit significant inhibitory activity against the proteolytic, hemorrhagic, and myotoxic effects of Bothrops venom by binding to active sites of metalloproteinases and phospholipase A2 (PLA2) Saponins and quinones demonstrated anti-inflammatory and anti-myotoxic effects through protein precipitation and ion chelation. Sulfated polysaccharides from marine algae showed anticoagulant and anti-edematous properties. Additionally, plant-derived steroids and coumarins inhibited venom-induced coagulation and tissue necrosis. Alkaloids and coumestans, such as wedelolactone, effectively reduced hemorrhagic and neurotoxic damage. Medicinal plants and their secondary metabolites have substantial potential to neutralize the biological responses of bothropic venom. Further research and clinical validation are needed to establish safety, efficacy, and standardized use in snakebite management protocols.

Abstract
Thymbra nabateorum, a plant species from the Lamiaceae family, is endemic to the Nabatian region, which spans southern Jordan and northwestern Saudi Arabia. It is renowned for its traditional uses and rich phytochemical profile. This study aims to examine the phytochemical composition of T. nabateorum and evaluate its biological activities, including antioxidant capacity, cytotoxic effects on cancer cell lines, and enzyme inhibition relevant to diabetes and neurodegenerative diseases. The essential oil (EO) and methanol extract of T. nabateorum were analyzed using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) and High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Antioxidant activity was assessed using the DPPH radical scavenging assay. Cytotoxicity was evaluated against MDA-MB231 and LNCaP cancer cell lines using the MTT assay. Enzyme inhibition assays were conducted to determine the inhibitory effects on α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and butyrylcholinesterase. GC-MS analysis revealed thymol (82.30%) as the major component of the essential oil, while HPLC identified significant phenolic compounds in the methanol extract, including diosmin (118.75 mg/g) and hesperidin (22.18 mg/g). The DPPH assay demonstrated strong antioxidant activity, with the methanol extract showing an IC50 of 11.97 μg/mL for α-amylase and 31.99 μg/mL for α-glucosidase, indicating notable antidiabetic potential. Cytotoxicity tests revealed significant antiproliferative effects against both cancer cell lines, with lower IC50 values compared to standard treatments. T. nabateorum exhibits substantial antioxidant, cytotoxic, and enzyme inhibition activities, supporting its traditional medicinal uses. These findings provide a scientific basis for further research into its bioactive compounds and potential applications in modern pharmacology, particularly in developing natural therapeutic agents for oxidative stress-related diseases and cancer.

Abstract
AIMS To investigate the associations of tea consumption with all-cause and cause-specific mortality among type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) Chinese patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS The present study included 15 718 participants from the Comprehensive Research on the Prevention and Control of Diabetes between 2013 and 2014 in Jiangsu, China. Information on tea consumption (including frequency, amount, and duration) was collected at baseline using interviewer-administered questionnaires. Death data were identified by linkage to the Death Certificate System. Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). RESULTS During a median follow-up of 9.77 (9.69, 9.82) years, 3046 deaths were documented, including 922 from cardiovascular disease (CVD) and 736 from cancer. Compared with nonconsumers, regular tea consumption (≥ 3 times/week, 1 cup/day, > 30 years) was associated with reduced all-cause mortality risk in T2DM, with HRs (95% CIs) of 0.82 (0.74, 0.91), 0.80 (0.72, 0.89), and 0.77 (0.68, 0.86). For cardiovascular mortality, the HRs (95% CIs) were 0.79 (0.65, 0.96), 0.72 (0.59, 0.89), and 0.75 (0.60, 0.93). The exposure-response relationship suggested that consuming 4 g/day may offer the most evident health benefits. CONCLUSIONS Among Chinese T2DM patients, higher tea frequency and amount intake were associated with lower risk of all-cause and CVD mortality. It is suggested that consuming 4 g/day of tea could potentially serve as an intervention target. These findings suggest that tea consumption can be a part of a healthy diet for T2DM patients.

Abstract
The human papillomavirus (HPV) 33 is a high-risk strain that causes lesions with potential cancerous outcomes. Its E2 protein regulates the viral protein transcription and life cycle maintenance. The DNA binding domain (DBD) of the E2 protein plays a crucial role in the viral life cycle. The DBD region of the E2 protein is particularly interesting for targeting and finding potential inhibitors to inhibit its function or dimerization. Given the limited research on HPV 33 and its proteins, the present work delved into the interaction of two natural polyphenolic compounds, resveratrol, and baicalein, with the E2 DBD of HPV 33 using biophysical and in silico studies. Fluorescence studies of the E2 DBD-polyphenol complexes showed fluorescence quenching with a binding constant of the order of 106 M-1. Circular dichroism data reveal conformational changes upon binding with the polyphenols, possibly due to distinct binding sites of the E2 DBD. Differential scanning calorimetry exhibited higher melting temperatures for the two complexes than alone DBD, suggesting the complexes' stability. ITC experiment suggested favorable binding reactions with k d values in the micromolar range. Molecular docking and dynamic simulation studies revealed that the resveratrol binds to the helical region and baicalein near the central dimeric interface of E2 DBD with a good binding affinity, forming a stable protein-ligand complex during the run of 100 ns simulation. Therefore, the current study identifies both polyphenolic compounds as promising candidates for potential antiviral drug development.

Abstract
The present study examined optimal dietary patterns of eight plant-based foods for preventing chronic diseases, including hypertension, stroke, myocardial infarction, and diabetes, using data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS). We applied generalized estimating equations to assess time-based changes and gender differences, using residual balancing weights to control time-varying confounders, and employed a restricted cubic spline model to explore dose-response relationships by gender. The findings suggested that a high intake of vegetables and whole grains, along with moderate amounts of fruits, fungi and algae, could help reduce the risk of developing these four chronic diseases simultaneously. Additionally, men could benefit from moderate refined grain consumption, while women should consider increasing their intake of nuts and seeds. Our results indicated that adopting a plant-based diet could provide non-linear protective effects against chronic diseases, with the magnitude of this protection varying by gender.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Autoimmune diseases manifest as an immune system response directed against endogenous antigens, exerting a significant influence on a substantial portion of the population. Notably, a leading contributor to morbidity and mortality in this context is cardiovascular disease (CVD). Intriguingly, individuals with autoimmune disorders exhibit a heightened prevalence of CVD compared to the general population. The meticulous management of CV risk factors assumes paramount importance, given the current absence of a standardized solution to this perplexity. This review endeavors to address this challenge from a nutritional perspective. RECENT FINDINGS Emerging evidence suggests that inflammation, a common thread in autoimmune diseases, also plays a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of CVD. Nutritional interventions aimed at reducing inflammation have shown promise in mitigating cardiovascular risk. The integration of nutritional strategies into the management plans for patients with autoimmune diseases offers a holistic approach to reducing cardiovascular risk. While conventional pharmacological treatments remain foundational, the addition of targeted dietary interventions can provide a complementary pathway to improve cardiovascular outcomes.

Abstract
Mycotoxins are secondary metabolites produced by fungi with harmful effects such as carcinogenicity, teratogenicity, nephrotoxicity, and hepatotoxicity. They cause widespread contamination of plant products such as crops, food, and feed, posing serious threats to the life and health of human beings and animals. It has been found that many traditionally synthesized and natural compounds are capable of inhibiting the growth of fungi and their secondary metabolite production. Natural compounds have attracted much attention due to their safety, environmental, and health friendly features. In this paper, compounds of plant origin with inhibitory effects on ochratoxins, aflatoxins, Fusarium toxins, and Alternaria toxins, including cinnamaldehyde, citral, magnolol, eugenol, pterostilbene, curcumin, and phenolic acid, are reviewed, and the inhibitory mechanisms of different compounds on the toxin production of fungi are also elucidated, with the aim of providing application references to reduce the contamination of fungal toxins, thus safeguarding the health of human beings and animals.

Abstract
Polyphenols are associated with various beneficial health effects. These compounds are present in edible plants such as fruits and vegetables, and the human body absorbs them through the consumption of foods and beverages. Wine is recognized as a rich source of these valuable compounds, and it has been well established that polyphenols present in red wine possess numerous biologically active functions related to health promotion. Therefore, most scientific research has been focused on red wine polyphenols, whereas white wine polyphenols have been neglected. This review presents the summarized information about the most abundant polyphenols in white wines, their concentration, their impact on wine quality and their potential health effects, such as neuroprotective and cardioprotective activities, antioxidant potential, antimicrobial activity and their positive effects on lipids. These findings are an effort to help compensate for the relative lack of relevant data in the scientific literature regarding white wine polyphenols.

Abstract
Oleuropein (OLP) is a naturally occurring phenolic compound in olive plant with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential and can possibly be used in treating pancreatic injuries. This investigation aimed to follow the molecular mechanism behind the potential therapeutic effect of OLP against pancreatic injury persuaded by ischemia-reperfusion (I/R). Pancreatic I/R injury was induced by splenic artery occlusion for 60 min followed by reperfusion. Oral administration of OLP (10 and 20 mg/kg) for 2 days significantly alleviated I/R-persuaded oxidative damage and inflammatory responses in pancreatic tissue as indicated by the decreased malondialdehyde (MDA) content and increased glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity, accompanied by the suppression of myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and reduced levels of interleukin-1beta (IL-1β), nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) in pancreatic tissues. Furthermore, OLP treatment markedly restored the serum levels of amylase, trypsinogen-activated peptide (TAP), and lipase, with concurrent improvement in pancreatic histopathological alterations. Moreover, treatment with OLP regulated the pancreatic expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1) relative to rats of the pancreatic IR group. Thus, OLP treatment significantly alleviates the I/R-induced pancreatic injury by inhibiting oxidative stress and inflammation in rats through downregulation of HMGB1 and its downstream NF-κB signaling pathway.

Abstract
This study emphasizes the critical role of antioxidants in protecting human health by counteracting the detrimental effects of oxidative stress induced by free radicals. Antioxidants-found in various forms such as vitamins, minerals, and the phytochemicals abundant in fruits and vegetables-neutralize free radicals by stabilizing them through electron donation. Specifically, flavonoid compounds are highlighted as robust defenders, addressing oxidative stress and inflammation to avert chronic illnesses like cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative diseases. This research explores the bioactive potential of flavonoids, shedding light on their role not only in safeguarding health, but also in managing conditions such as diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegenerative diseases. This review highlights the novel integration of South African-origin flavonoids with nanotechnology, presenting a cutting-edge strategy to improve drug delivery and therapeutic outcomes. This interdisciplinary approach, blending traditional wisdom with contemporary techniques, propels the exploration of flavonoid-mediated nanoparticles toward groundbreaking pharmaceutical applications, promising revolutionary advancements in healthcare. Abstract
Flavonoids are found in the roots, stems, leaves, and fruits of many plant taxa. They are related to plant growth and development, pigment formation, and protection against environmental stress. Flavonoids function as antioxidants and exert anti-inflammatory effects in the cardiovascular system by modulating classical inflammatory response pathways, such as the TLR4-NF-ĸB, PI3K-AKT, and Nrf2/HO-1 signalling pathways. There is increasing evidence for the therapeutic effects of flavonoids on hypertension, atherosclerosis, and other diseases. The potential clinical value of flavonoids for diseases of the cardiovascular system has been widely explored. For example, studies have evaluated the roles of flavonoids in the regulation of blood pressure via endothelium-dependent and non-endothelium-dependent pathways and in the regulation of myocardial systolic and diastolic functions by influencing calcium homeostasis and smooth muscle-related protein expression. Flavonoids also have hypoglycaemic, hypolipidemic, anti-platelet, autophagy, and antibacterial effects. In this paper, the role and mechanism of flavonoids in cardiovascular diseases were reviewed in order to provide reference for the clinical application of flavonoids in the future.

Abstract
Despite their successful implementation in the COVID-19 vaccines, lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) still face a central limitation in the delivery of mRNA payloads: endosomal trapping. Improving upon this inefficiency could afford improved drug delivery systems, paving the way toward safer and more effective mRNA-based medicines. Here, we present polyphenolic nanoparticle platforms (PARCELs) as effective mRNA delivery systems. In brief, our investigation begins with a computationally guided structural analysis of 1825 discrete polyphenolic structural data points across 73 diverse small molecule polyphenols and 25 molecular parameters. We then generate structurally diverse PARCELs, evaluating their in vitro mechanism and activity, ultimately highlighting the superior endosomal escape properties of PARCELs relative to analogous LNPs. Finally, we examine the in vivo biodistribution, protein expression, and therapeutic efficacy of PARCELs in mice. In undertaking this approach, the goal of this study is to establish PARCELs as viable delivery platforms for safe and effective mRNA delivery.

Abstract
Hypertension is the crucial modifiable risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, and efforts to identify functional foods that are effective for hypertension control are increasing. The nutgall tree (NT, Rhus chinensis Mill.) is used in traditional medicine and food because of its medicinal value. However, the role of NT in hypertension has not been investigated. Therefore, the hypotensive effect of NT leaf ethanol extract (NTE) was investigated in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). SHRs were allocated to three groups (control, 300, or 1000 mg/kg NTE), and blood pressure was measured before and after oral administration. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure significantly decreased in the NTE 1000 mg/kg group and was the lowest at 2 h after administration (-26.4 ± 10.3, -33.5 ± 9.8%, respectively). Daily NTE administration for five days also resulted in a similar effect. Further, the vasorelaxant effects and related mechanisms were investigated in the aortas of Sprague Dawley rats. NTE showed the dose-dependent blood-vessel-relaxing effect, and its mechanism involves the NO-sGC-cGMP pathway, activation of K+ channels, and reduction in the vasoconstrictive action of angiotensin II. Therefore, our study provides basic data indicating the potential use of NTE as a functional food for high blood pressure.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study investigated the potential correlation between 4 plant-based diet indices and the predicted risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) in Korean men using the Framingham Risk Score. METHODS The study included 12,356 men participants (aged ≥40 years) from the Health Examinees Study. Dietary intake was estimated using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Four plant-based diet indices were measured, including the overall plant-based diet index, the healthy plant-based diet index (hPDI), the unhealthy plant-based diet index (uPDI), and the pro-vegetarian diet index. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard models were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the predicted 10-year risk of CHD. RESULTS The study found that individuals in the highest hPDI quintile had a 19% lower risk score for CHD based on the Framingham Risk Score (model 3: HR, 0.80; 95% CI, 0.69 to 0.93; p for trend=0.010). In stratified analyses, the highest pro-vegetarian diet index was associated with a lower risk score for CHD in physically active individuals (HR, 0.74; 95% CI, 0.59 to 0.93; p for interaction=0.020). Conversely, the highest uPDI was associated with the highest risk score for CHD in those with a body mass index of ≥25 kg/m2 and a waist circumference ≥90 cm. CONCLUSIONS This prospective cohort study highlights the positive role of adhering to a high hPDI diet in the prevention of CHD in Korean men. Further prospective studies are needed to determine the association between various plant-based diet indices and the risk of CHD in Asian populations with different dietary habits.

Abstract
Nowadays, an increased concern regarding using natural products for their health benefits can be observed. The aim of this study was to assess and compare several phenolic compounds found in 15- to 60-year-old Douglas fir, silver fir, larch, pine, and spruce needle and bark extracts and to evaluate their antioxidant and antimicrobial activities. Spectrophotometric assays were used to determine the total polyphenol content and the antioxidant activity that was assessed by using the DPPH• radical scavenging assay (RSA), the ferric reducing antioxidant power assay (FRAP), and the ABTS•+ radical cation scavenging assay (ABTS). The phytochemical content was determined by using high-performance liquid chromatography, and the antimicrobial activity was determined by assessing the minimal inhibition concentration (MIC). The results of the study show a total polyphenol content of 62.45-109.80 mg GAE/g d.w. and an antioxidant activity of 91.18-99.32% for RSA, 29.16-35.74 µmol TE/g d.w. for FRAP, and 38.23-53.57 µmol TE/g d.w. for ABTS. The greatest quantity of phenolic compound for most of the extracts was for (+)-catechin, and it had values between 165.79 and 5343.27 µg/g d.w. for these samples. The antimicrobial inhibition for all the extracts was the strongest for Staphylococcus aureus (MIC 62.5-125 µg/mL). The extracts analyzed could be used for their bioactive potential after further investigations.

Abstract
The tumor microenvironment (TME) has emerged as a valuable therapeutic target in glioblastoma (GBM), as it promotes tumorigenesis via an increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Immune cells such as microglia accumulate near the tumor and its hypoxic core, fostering tumor proliferation and angiogenesis. In this study, we explored the therapeutic potential of natural polyphenols with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Notably, flavonoids, including fisetin and quercetin, can protect non-cancerous cells while eliminating transformed cells (2D cultures and 3D tumoroids). We tested the hypothesis that fisetin and quercetin are modulators of redox-responsive transcription factors, for which subcellular location plays a critical role. To investigate the sites of interaction between natural compounds and stress-responsive transcription factors, we combined molecular docking with experimental methods employing proximity ligation assays. Our findings reveal that fisetin decreased cytosolic acetylated high mobility group box 1 (acHMGB1) and increased transcription factor EB (TFEB) abundance in microglia but not in GBM. Moreover, our results suggest that the most powerful modulator of the Nrf2-KEAP1 complex is fisetin. This finding is in line with molecular modeling and calculated binding properties between fisetin and Nrf2-KEAP1, which indicated more sites of interactions and stronger binding affinities than quercetin.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although studies have reported an inverse association between fruits, vegetables, and fiber consumption and all-cause and cause-specific mortality, the issue remains incompletely defined in the Middle Eastern population. AIMS The current study aimed to investigate the association between dietary fiber, fruit, and vegetable intake and all-cause and cause-specific mortality. METHODS A total of 48632 participants (mean age = 52years), 57.5% (n = 27974) women and 42.5% (n = 20658) men, were recruited from an ongoing large-scale prospective cohort study (the Golestan Cohort Study (GCS)), in the north of Iran. Using a validated semi-quantitative 116-item food questionnaire, dietary intakes were collected. Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) of all-cause and cause-specific mortality were reported. RESULTS After approximately 14 years of follow-up, 10,774 deaths were recorded. In the fully adjusted model, compared to those in the lowest quintile of intake, those in the second and third quintiles of dietary fiber intake had a 7%-10% reduction in risk of all-cause mortality, and a 15%-17% reduction in the risk of mortality from other causes. Increasing consumption of fruits was also associated with a decreased risk of mortality for all-cause mortality by 9%-11%, and all cancer by 15-20%. Further, those in the third and fourth quintiles of vegetables intake had 11%-12% lower risk for CVD mortality. DISCUSSION The results from the GCS further support the current recommendations on following a healthy diet containing proper amounts of fiber, vegetables, and fruits, as health-protective dietary items. CONCLUSIONS Higher intake of dietary fiber, fruits, and vegetables has the potential to reduce both overall and cause-specific mortality rates. However, additional cohort studies with larger sample size and long-term follow-up durations are required to establish these findings.

Abstract
Four species of lupin (white lupin, yellow lupin, blue lupin and Andean lupin) are widely cropped thanks to the excellent nutritional composition of their seeds: high protein content (28-48 g/100 g); good lipid content (4.6-13.5 g/100 g, but up to 20.0 g/100 g in Andean lupin), especially unsaturated triacylglycerols; and richness in antioxidant compounds like carotenoids, tocols and phenolics. Particularly relevant is the amount of free phenolics, highly bioaccessible in the small intestine. However, the typical bitter and toxic alkaloids must be eliminated before lupin consumption, hindering its diffusion and affecting its nutritional value. This review summarises the results of recent research in lupin composition for the above-mentioned three classes of antioxidant compounds, both in non-debittered and debittered seeds. Additionally, the influence of technological processes to further increase their nutritional value as well as the effects of food manufacturing on antioxidant content were scrutinised. Lupin has been demonstrated to be an outstanding raw material source, superior to most crops and suitable for manufacturing foods with good antioxidant and nutritional properties. The bioaccessibility of lupin antioxidants after digestion of ready-to-eat products still emerges as a dearth in current research.

Abstract
Fruits, vegetables, and other food items contain phytochemicals or secondary metabolites which may be considered non-essential nutrients but have medicinal importance. These dietary phytochemicals exhibit chemopreventive and therapeutic effects against numerous diseases. Polyphenols are secondary metabolites found in vegetables, fruits, and grains. These compounds exhibit several health benefits such as immune modulators, vasodilators, and antioxidants. This review focuses on recent studies on using dietary polyphenols to treat cardiovascular disorders, atherosclerosis, and vascular endothelium deficits. We focus on exploring the safety of highly effective polyphenols to ensure their maximum impact on cardiac abnormalities and discuss recent epidemiological evidence and intervention trials related to these properties. Kaempferol, quercetin, and resveratrol prevent oxidative stress by regulating proteins that induce oxidation in heart tissues. In addition, polyphenols modulate the tone of the endothelium of vessels by releasing nitric oxide (NO) and reducing low-density lipoprotein (LDL) oxidation to prevent atherosclerosis. In cardiomyocytes, polyphenols suppress the expression of inflammatory markers and inhibit the production of inflammation markers to exert an anti-inflammatory response. Consequently, heart diseases such as strokes, hypertension, heart failure, and ischemic heart disease could be prevented by dietary polyphenols.

Abstract
Human health is at risk from pulmonary hypertension (PH), characterized by decreased pulmonary vascular resistance and constriction of the pulmonary vessels, resulting in right heart failure and dysfunction. Thus, preventing PH and monitoring its progression before treating it is vital. Wogonin, derived from the leaves of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, exhibits remarkable pharmacological activity. In this study, we examined the effectiveness of wogonin in mitigating the progression of PH in mice using right heart catheterization and hematoxylin-eosin (HE) staining. As an alternative to minimize the possibility of harming small animals, we present a scientifically effective feature selection method (BSCDWOA-KELM) that will allow us to develop a novel simpler noninvasive prediction method for wogonin in treating PH. In this method, we use the proposed enhanced whale optimizer (SCDWOA) in conjunction with the kernel extreme learning machine (KELM). Initially, we let SCDWOA perform global optimization experiments on the IEEE CEC2014 benchmark function set to verify its core advantages. Lastly, 12 public and PH datasets are examined for feature selection experiments using BSCDWOA-KELM. As shown in the experimental results for global optimization, the proposed SCDWOA has better convergence performance. Meanwhile, the proposed binary SCDWOA (BSCDWOA) significantly improves the ability of KELM to classify data. By utilizing the BSCDWOA-KELM, key indicators such as the Red blood cell (RBC), the Haemoglobin (HGB), the Lymphocyte percentage (LYM%), the Hematocrit (HCT), and the Red blood cell distribution width-size distribution (RDW-SD) can be efficiently screened in the Pulmonary hypertension dataset, and one of its most essential points is its accuracy of greater than 0.98. Consequently, the BSCDWOA-KELM introduced in this study can be used to predict wogonin therapy for treating pulmonary hypertension in a simple and noninvasive manner.

Abstract
In this paper, I tested our quadratic regression models for the estimation of flavonoid oxidation potentials based on spin populations, the differences in the net atomic charges between a cation and a neutral flavonoid, between a radical and an anion of a flavonoid, and between a radical and a neutral flavonoid on a larger set of flavonoids (N = 35). By including six new flavonoids (5,6,7-trihydroxyflavone, 3,3',4',7-tetrahydroxyflavone, 3,7-dihydroxyflavone, 4',7-dihydroxyflavone, 4',5,7-trihydroxyisoflavone, and 6-hydroxyflavone), we created a respectable calibration set of 35 flavonoids with their oxidation potentials all measured at the same conditions by the same experimentalist. The best model was based on the mean values of the three variables using differences in the net atomic charges (R 2 = 0.970, S.E. = 0.043), which are connected with the three different mechanisms of electrochemical oxidation, SET-PT, SPLET, and HAT.

Abstract
Introduction Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a cluster of pathological conditions well described in humans but still investigated insufficiently in animals. A novel approach in its management is the utilisation of nutrients from natural sources. Recent studies suggested that phenolic compounds from pomegranate peel could be a promising dietary intervention for MetS. This study evaluated the potency of polyphenol-rich pomegranate peel extract (EPP) in mitigating some MetS components in an animal model. Material and Methods Zucker diabetic fatty rats (with an fa/fa missense mutation in the Lepr leptin receptor gene) and their healthy counterparts (fa/+) as controls were fed a high-calorie diet to induce MetS and supplemented with EPP at two doses: 100 mg/kg body weight (b.w.) and 200 mg/kg b.w. The extract was administered for eight weeks. The rats' body weights were monitored twice per week, and blood samples were taken before EPP administration after four weeks and eight weeks of study. Echocardiography measurement was performed at the beginning and at the end of the study. Results The extract restrained the dynamic of weight gain. A cardioprotective effect of the highest dose of EPP supplementation was manifested in a relative decrease in heart rate and improved mid-fractional shortening, representing myocardial contractility. No improvement in fasting blood glucose or lipid profile was observed. Conclusion Pomegranate peel extract possesses beneficial health properties that could be useful in dietary intervention in MetS. However, its bioavailability still requires further investigation in clinical trials in humans and animals suffering from endocrine and metabolic disorders.

Abstract
Comprehensively compiled dietary polyphenol data is required to compare polyphenol content between foods, calculate polyphenol intake and study its association with health and disease. The purpose of this review was to identify data on the presence and content of polyphenolic components in South African foods, with the aim of compiling the data into a database. An electronic literature search was conducted up until January 2020 using multiple databases. Additional literature was sourced from South African university repositories. A total of 7051 potentially eligible references were identified, of which 384 met the inclusion criteria. These studies provided information on food item name, geographical distribution, polyphenol type, quantity, and quantification method. Data for 1070 foods were identified, amounting to 4994 polyphenols. Spectrophotometry was the main method used for quantification of gross phenolic content in various assays such as total phenolic content (Folin-Ciocalteu assay), total flavonoid content (AlCl3 assay) and condensed tannin content (vanillin-HCl assay). Phenolic acids and flavonoids were the main polyphenol classes identified. This review highlights that South Africa has abundant information on the polyphenol content of foods, which could be utilised within a food composition database for the estimation of polyphenol intake for South Africa.

Abstract
This research was aimed at evaluating the relationship between the estimated polyphenol intake and the atherogenic lipid profile in adult and elder residents in the city of Teresina, located in the Northeastern Region of Brazil. This study was a cross-sectional population-based survey with 501 adults and elders, conducted in Teresina, Brazil. Food intake was obtained by 24-h food recall. The estimated polyphenol intake was calculated by multiplying the food consumption data from the recall by the polyphenol content in the foods described in the Phenol-Explorer database. The mean intake of total polyphenols was 1006.53 mg/day. The phenolic acids was the class with the highest intake, followed by the flavonols. Coffee, beans and apples were the main foods contributing to the total polyphenol intake. In the individuals with elevated serum concentrations of total cholesterol and triglycerides, the intake of total polyphenols was significantly higher. The intake of total polyphenols, phenolic acids and lignans was higher in the subjects with dyslipidemia. This article provides, for the first time, data on the intake of the total polyphenol classes and subclasses in the evaluated population and the relationship with the lipid profile. The individuals with a higher intake of total polyphenols had a worse lipid profile, which may be a consequence of an improved diet in those individuals who present with dyslipidemia.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Rhodiola crenulata (Rc) is a traditional herb, used in Tibetan medicine, has shown promise efficacy in physical performance improvement, work capacity enhancement, fatigue elimination, and altitude sickness prevention. Also, Rc exhibited therapeutic effects on aging-related diseases. However, relevant researches on Rc and their bioactive components are quite few and needs further investigation. AIM OF THE STUDY The objective of this study was to understand the relationship between phytochemical profiles and their activities of Rc extracts. MATERIALS AND METHODS Rc extracts prepared by solvents with various hydrophilicity (i.e. aqueous ethanol (70%, v/v), water, and ethyl acetate), and their chemical compositions and specific compounds were analyzed by chemical analysis method and ultra-performance liquid chromatography quadruple time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF-MS). The regulate effects of Rc extracts on senescence and antioxidant activity were evaluated using the models of LO2 cells and Caenorhabditis elegans. RESULTS The 70% ethanol extracts exhibited better regulating effects on senescence via the assays of senescence -associated β-galactosidase (SAβG) staining and lifespan, which was consistent with the higher antioxidant activities observed based on the results of antioxidant assays. A total of 14 phytochemicals have been identified in 70% ethanol extracts, whereas the other two extracts contained much fewer compounds in varieties. Phytochemical profile of water extract was similar to the first half (polar compounds, running time: 0-6 min) of 70% ethanol extract profile, while those of ethyl acetate extract was consistent with its second half (more nonpolar compounds, running time: 6-12 min). CONCLUSIONS The 14 phytochemicals in Rc might exhibit additive or synergistic effects on senescence regulating and antioxidant activities, providing theoretical basis for daily administration of Rc.

Abstract
This is the first study that quantified quercetin (QUE) and its 16 metabolites in the breast milk of QUE-fed maternal mice, the plasma and urine of that, and neonatal mice. Interestingly, the QUE aglycone concentration in the milk was much higher than in the plasma of maternal mice, suggesting that QUE may exert biological activity in neonates.

Abstract
Tempe is a fermented food prepared by fermenting soybeans with Rhizopus species. However, there have recently been concerns about the stable supply of raw soybeans due to global warming and other factors. Moringa is a plant whose cultivation area is expected to expand in the future, and its seeds contain abundant proteins and lipids, and thus could be used as an alternative to soybeans. To develop a novel functional Moringa food, we fermented dehulled Moringa seeds with Rhizopus oligosporus and Rhizopus stolonifer using the solid fermentation method of tempe and investigated changes in the functional components, such as free amino acids and polyphenols, of the respective obtained Moringa tempe Rm and Rs. After 45 h of fermentation, the total content of free amino acids, mainly including gamma-aminobutyric acid and l-glutamic acid, in Moringa tempe Rm was about three times higher, while that in Moringa tempe Rs was almost the same, compared to that in unfermented Moringa seeds. Moreover, after 70 h of fermentation, both Moringa tempe Rm and Rs had approximately four times higher polyphenol content and significantly higher antioxidant activity than did unfermented Moringa seeds. Further, the content of each residual chitin-binding protein of defatted Moringa tempe Rm and Rs was almost the same as that of unfermented Moringa seeds. Taken together, Moringa tempe was rich in free amino acids and polyphenols, exhibited better antioxidant activity, and retained the levels of its chitin-binding proteins, suggesting that Moringa seeds could be used as an alternative to soybean for tempe preparation.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are one of the most prevalent medical conditions of modern era and are one of the primary causes of adult mortality in both developing and developed countries. Conventional medications such as use of aspirin, beta-blockers, statins and angiotensin- converting enzyme inhibitors involve use of drugs with many antagonistic effects. Hence, alternative therapies which are safe, effective, and relatively cheap are increasingly being investigated for the treatment and prevention of CVDs. The secondary metabolites of medicinal plants contain several bioactive compounds which have emerged as alternatives to toxic modern medicines. The detrimental effects of CVDs can be mitigated via the use of various bioactive phytochemicals such as catechin, isoflavones, quercetin etc. present in medicinal plants. Current review intends to accumulate previously published data over the years using online databases concerning herbal plant based secondary metabolites that can help in inhibition and treatment of CVDs. An in-depth review of various phytochemical constituents with therapeutic actions such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, vasorelaxant, anti-hypertensive and cardioprotective properties has been delineated. An attempt has been made to provide a probable mechanistic overview for the pertinent phytoconstituent which will help in achieving a better prognosis and effective treatment for CVDs.

Abstract
The rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) are the important oil bearing material worldwide, which contain wide variety of bioactive components with polyphenolic compounds considered the most typical. The rapeseed polyphenols encompass different structural variants, and have been considered to have many bioactive functions, which are beneficial for the human health. Whereas, the rapeseed oil processing technologies affect their content and the biofunctional activities. The present review of the literature highlighted the major types of the rapeseed polyphenols, and summarized their biofunctional roles. The influences of rapeseed oil processing technologies on these polyphenols were also elucidated. Furthermore, the directions of the future studies for producing nutritional rapeseed oils preserved higher level of polyphenols were prospected. The rapeseed polyphenols are divided into the phenolic acids and polyphenolic tannins, both of which contained different subtypes. They are reported to have multiple biofunctional roles, thus showing outstanding health improvement effects. The rapeseed oil processing technologies have significant effects on both of the polyphenol content and activity. Some novel processing technologies, such as aqueous enzymatic extraction (AEE), subcritical or supercritical extraction showed advantages for producing rapeseed oil with higher level of polyphenols. The oil refining process involved heat or strong acid and alkali conditions affected their stability and activity, leading to the loss of polyphenols of the final products. Future efforts are encouraged to provide more clinic evidence for the practical applications of the rapeseed polyphenols, as well as optimizing the processing technologies for the green manufacturing of rapeseed oils.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Triterpenoid saponins of Ilex pubescens (IPTS), the main active components of Ilex pubescens, has a therapeutic effect on atherosclerosis (AS). The ingredients in IPTS that could be intracellularly transported by human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) may play an essential role in AS. This study attempted to explore its mechanism from the perspectives of HUVECs' inflammation, apoptosis, and autophagy. METHODS By using a tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)-induced HUVECs injury model, cell viability and the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM1), matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP9), cleave-caspase-3 and cleave-caspase-9, in combination with the results of flow cytometry, JC-1 and Hoechst 33258 staining were investigated to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic impact effects of IPTS on HUVECs. Afterwards, the expression of microtubule-associated proteins light chain 3II (LC3II) and sequestosome 1 (p62) was determined to test the effect of IPTS on autophagy. Finally, by adding an autophagy inhibitor 3-methyladenine (3-MA), we investigated whether IPTS exerts anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects through the autophagy pathway. KEY FINDINGS We firstly demonstrated that pretreatment with IPTS could increase the cell viability, maintain the cell morphology and reduce TNF-α-induced inflammation and apoptosis of HUVECs. Moreover, IPTS pretreatment was proved to raise the expression of LC3II /LC3I while decreasing the expression of p62, which indicated that IPTS could activate HUVECs' autophagy. IPTS has been shown for the first time to exert anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic effects through autophagy and thereby resisting TNF-α-induced inflammatory injury of HUVECs. CONCLUSIONS This study preliminarily confirmed that IPTS ameliorated HUVECs' inflammation and apoptosis by increasing autophagy.

Abstract
Previously, we isolated 2R,3S,15R-calofolic acids (CAs) from Calophyllum scriblitifolium bark, which showed vasorelaxant activity on phenylephrine (PE)-precontracted rat aortic rings. Although the effect was suggested to be induced via an extracellular Ca2+-independent manner and mainly acts on vascular smooth muscle, the exact mechanism of action of CAs remained unclear. Thus, this study investigated the detailed mechanism of calofolic acid-A (CA-A) induced vasorelaxation in an aortic ring specimen using rat vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs). The levels of PE-induced phosphorylation on MLC Ser19 decreased in VSMCs pretreated with CA-A. CA-A also decreased the phosphorylation of MYPT1 Thr696 and MYPT1 Thr853. On the other hand, CA-A increased the PE-induced phosphorylation of MYPT1 Ser695 and MYPT1 Ser668, which are reported to be phosphorylated by a cAMP-dependent protein kinase (PKA). CA-A slightly increased PKA substrate phosphorylation in a concentration-dependent manner. Furthermore, CA-A enhanced isoproterenol (ISO)-induced cAMP accumulation and PKA substrate phosphorylation. Treatment with PI-3 kinase (PI3K) inhibitor, LY294002, enhanced ISO-induced cAMP accumulation and PKA substrate phosphorylation in the same manner as CA-A treatment. Furthermore, CA-A was found to directly inhibit PI3K enzyme activity in a dose-dependent manner. Taken together, the present study indicated that CA-A induces vasorelaxation through an indirectly activated PKA-MYPT1 pathway caused by inhibition of PI3K activity.

Abstract
B-type procyanidins, a series of catechin oligomers, are among the most ingested polyphenols in the human diet. Results of meta-analyses have suggested that intake of B-type procyanidins reduces cardiovascular disease risk. Another recent focus has been on the effects of B-type procyanidins on central nervous system (CNS) function. Although long-term B-type procyanidin ingestion is linked to health benefits, a single oral intake has been reported to cause physiological alterations in circulation, metabolism, and the CNS. Comprehensive analyses of previous reports indicate an optimal mid-range dose for the hemodynamic effects of B-type procyanidins, with null responses at lower or higher doses, suggesting hormesis. Indeed, polyphenols, including B-type procyanidins, elicit hormetic responses in vitro, but animal and clinical studies are limited. Hormesis of hemodynamic and metabolic responses to B-type procyanidins was recently confirmed in animal studies, however, and our work has linked these effects to the CNS. Here, we evaluate the hormetic response elicited by B-type procyanidins, recontextualizing the results of intervention trials. In addition, we discuss the possibility that this hormetic response to B-type procyanidins arises via CNS neurotransmitter receptors. We have verified the direction of future research for B-type procyanidins in this review.

Abstract
A healthy gut provides the perfect habitat for trillions of bacteria, called the intestinal microbiota, which is greatly responsive to the long-term diet; it exists in a symbiotic relationship with the host and provides circulating metabolites, hormones, and cytokines necessary for human metabolism. The gut–heart axis is a novel emerging concept based on the accumulating evidence that a perturbed gut microbiota, called dysbiosis, plays a role as a risk factor in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease. Consequently, recovery of the gut microbiota composition and function could represent a potential new avenue for improving patient outcomes. Despite their low absorption, preclinical evidence indicates that polyphenols and their metabolites are transformed by intestinal bacteria and halt detrimental microbes’ colonization in the host. Moreover, their metabolites are potentially effective in human health due to antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer effects. The aim of this review is to provide an overview of the causal role of gut dysbiosis in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, hypertension, and heart failure; to discuss the beneficial effects of polyphenols on the intestinal microbiota, and to hypothesize polyphenols or their derivatives as an opportunity to prevent and treat cardiovascular diseases by shaping gut eubiosis.

Abstract
Grape pomace and berries represent natural sources of phytochemicals that can increase the quality of life of consumers by contributing to the prevention of chronic diseases; thus, the development of a dietary supplement was necessary. The raw material (r.m.) used for the development of the dietary supplement consisted of dried and powdered bilberries (Vaccinium myrtillus L.), red currants (Ribes rubrum L.), and red fermented pomaces (Vitis vinifera L.) from Feteasca Neagra and Cabernet Sauvignon cultivars. The particle size distribution, powder flow, total phenolic content (TPC), HPLC-DAD phenolic profile assessment, and radical scavenging assay (RSA) were employed for the analysis of the raw material. After encapsulation, the average mass and uniformity of mass, the disintegration, and the uniformity of content for the obtained capsules were performed to obtain a high-quality dietary supplement. All the assays performed complied to the compendial requirements and the TPC was determined at 9.07 ± 0.25 mg gallic acid equivalents/g r.m. and RSA at 48.32 ± 0.74%. The highest quantities of phenolic compounds determined were 333.7 ± 0.50 µg/g r.m. for chlorogenic acid, followed by rutin, ferulic acid, and (+)-catechin with 198.9 ± 1.60 µg/g r.m., 179.8 ± 0.90 µg/g r.m. and 118.7 ± 0.75 µg/g r.m., respectively. The results of this study can be used for the manufacturing and assessing of pilot scale-up capsule batches and thinking of quality assurance, we recommend that the industrial batch extracts should be standardized in polyphenols, and the manufacturing process should be validated.

Abstract
Rumex vesicarius (L.) is a folklore medicinal herb that has been used for centuries to cure cardiovascular diseases. The present work was carefully designed to ascertain the pharmacological basis for R. vesicarius’s therapeutic efficacy in cardiovascular diseases, as well as the underlying mechanism. In the ex vivo investigation, the aqueous-methanolic leaf extract of R. vesicarius was shown to have endothelium-dependent vasorelaxant effects in rabbit aorta tissue preparations, and its hypotensive responses were quantified by pressure and force transducers coupled to the Power Lab Data Acquisition System. Furthermore, when rabbits were subjected to adrenaline-induced myocardial infarction, R. vesicarius demonstrated cardioprotective characteristics. In contrast to the intoxicated group, the myocardial infarction model showed lower ALP, CK-MB, CRP, LDH, ALT, troponin, and AST levels (p > 0.005−0.000), as well as edema, necrosis, apoptosis, inflammatory cell enrolment, and necrosis. R. vesicarius exhibited significant antioxidant activity and delayed noradrenaline-induced platelet aggregation. Its cardioprotective, anticoagulant, and vasorelaxant properties in both investigations (in vivo and ex vivo) are mediated through partial endothelium-dependent, NO and calcium channel blockade mediated vasorelaxation. The minimizing of adrenaline, oxidative stress, and tissue damage demonstrate its therapeutic efficacy in cardiovascular diseases.

Phenolic Profiling of Berries Waste and Determination of Their Antioxidant Potential. J FOOD QUALITY 2022. Abstract
Berries waste is a major issue in Australia’s annual food wastage, which can reach 7.3 million tonnes. This study assessed the phenolic content and antioxidant potential of four fruit berry wastes, including blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum), blackberries (Rubus spp.), raspberries (Rubus idaeus), and strawberries (Fragaria spp.), followed by their characterization and quantification. Blueberry wastes were high in phenolic content (total phenolic content: 1.97 ± 0.16 mg GAE/gF.W; total flavonoid content: 220.43 ± 13.15 μg QE/gF.W; total tannins content: 16.47 ± 0.98 μg CE/gF.W), and antioxidant potentials are 2,2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl: 2.23 ± 0.17 mg AAE/gF.W; 2,2′-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid): 1.79 ± 0.09 mg AAE/gF.W; ferric reducing antioxidant power: 68.71 ± 11.11 μg AAE/gF.W (total antioxidant capacity: 1.22 ± 0.03 mg AAE/gF.W). The LC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS analysis identified 87 compounds from blueberry (57), strawberry (40), raspberry (47), and blackberry wastes (27). Indicated by HPLC quantification, blueberry wastes had higher levels of phenolic acid (syringic acid and coumaric acid) and flavonoid (kaempferol and kaempfero l-3-glucoside). Our study reported that phenolics from berry wastes could be utilized in different food, feed, pharmaceutical, and nutraceutical industries.

Purpose
Higher total fruit and vegetable (FV) intakes have been associated with lower perceived stress. The relationship between specific types of FV and perceived stress remains uncertain. The aims of this cross-sectional study were to explore the relationship between consumption of specific types of FV with perceived stress in a population-based cohort of men and women aged ≥ 25 years from the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle (AusDiab) Study.
Methods
Dietary intake was assessed using a validated Food Frequency Questionnaire (n = 8,640). Perceived stress was evaluated using a validated Perceived Stress Questionnaire, with values ranging 0–1 (lowest to highest). High perceived stress cut-offs of ≥0.34 for men and ≥0.39 for women were obtained from the highest quartile of the perceived stress score for each sex. Multivariable-adjusted logistic regression was performed to investigate the associations.
Results
The mean age of participants (50.1% females) was 47.8 (SD 15) years. Persons in the highest, versus lowest, quartiles of apples and pears, orange and other citrus, and banana intakes had a significantly lower odds (24–31%) of having high perceived stress. Similarly, persons with higher intakes of cruciferous, yellow/orange/red, and legume vegetables had significantly lower odds (25–27%) of having high perceived stress.
Conclusion
In Australian adults, a higher consumption of apples and pears, oranges and other citrus, and bananas, as well as cruciferous, yellow/orange/red, and legume vegetables were associated with lower odds of having high perceived stress. The recommendations of “eating a rainbow” of colours may assist in preventing and/or reducing perceived stress.

Abstract
Introduction: Given that some plant-based foods, such as potatoes, adversely affect cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors, this study was performed to assess the association between plant dietary patterns and these risk factors.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among 371 healthy 18 to 50 year-old Iranian women. Participant dietary intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire. Nineteen food groups were ranked in deciles and received scores from 1 to 10. An overall plant-based dietary index (PDI), a healthy plant-based dietary index (hPDI), and an unhealthy plant-based dietary index (uPDI) were calculated.
Results: Participants who scored in the top tertile of the PDI or uPDI consumed less fat and protein and more carbohydrates, compared to women in the lowest tertile (P < 0.05). There was no significant variation in macronutrient consumption between the highest and lowest tertiles of hPDI. Participants who scored in the highest tertile of PDI had lower low density cholesterol level (LDL) (79.61 ± 14.36 mg dL−1 vs. 83.01 ± 14.96 mg/dL−1, P = 0.021). In addition, higher adherence to uPDI was associated with higher triglyceride (TG) levels compared to participants with lower adherence (101.5 ± 56.55 mg/dL−1 vs. 97.70 ± 56.46 mg dL−1, P < 0.0001). Here was no significant association between PDI, hPDI and uPDI and CVD risk factors in regression model.
Conclusion: We found no significant association between plant-based dietary indices and CVD risk factors in women, except for LDL-C and TG. Future cohort studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Abstract
In the field of oncology, the plant kingdom has an inexhaustible supply of bioactive compounds. Phytochemical compounds isolated from Helleborus species have been found to be useful in various chronic diseases. This has brought Helleborus to the attention of medical researchers. H. purpurascens is a plant characteristic of the Carpathian area, known since ancient times for its beneficial effects. The aim of the study was to evaluate the flavonoids composition of a hydroalcoholic extract of H. purpurascens, as well as to assess its antioxidant activity and antitumor potential at the level of two healthy cell lines and four tumor cell lines. In addition, the expression of the genes involved in the apoptotic process (Bcl-2, Bad, and Bax) were evaluated. The results indicated that the extract has a high concentration of flavonoids, such as epicatechin, quercetin, and kaempferol. The extract has an increased antioxidant activity, very similar to that of the standard, ascorbic acid and cytotoxic effects predominantly in the breast cancer cell line, being free of cytotoxic effects in healthy cell lines. Underlying the cytotoxic effect is the induction of the process of apoptosis, which in the present study was highlighted by decreasing the expression of anti-apoptotic genes (Bcl-2) and increasing the expression of pro-apoptotic genes (Bad and Bax). In conclusion, the hydroalcoholic extract of H. purpurascens can be considered an important source for future medical applications in cancer therapy.

Abstract
Plumeria rubra (L.) is a traditional folkloric medicinal herb used to treat cardiovascular disorders. The present investigation was methodically planned to investigate the pharmacological foundations for the therapeutic effectiveness of P. rubra in cardiovascular illnesses and its underlying mechanisms. Ex vivo vaso-relaxant effects of crude leaf extract of P. rubra were observed in rabbit aorta ring preparations. Hypotensive effects were measured using pressure and force transducers connected to the Power Lab data acquisition system. Furthermore, P. rubra displayed cardioprotective properties in rabbits when they were exposed to adrenaline-induced myocardial infarction. In comparison to the intoxicated group, the myocardial infarction model showed decreased troponin levels, CK-MB, LDH, ALT, ALP, AST, and CRP, as well as necrosis, apoptosis, oedema, and inflammatory cell enrollment. P. rubra has revealed good antioxidant properties and prolonged the noradrenaline intoxicated platelet adhesion. Its anticoagulant, vasorelaxant, and cardioprotective effects in both in vivo and ex vivo investigations are enabled by blocking L-type calcium channels, lowering adrenaline, induced oxidative stress, and tissue tear, justifying its therapeutic utility in cardiovascular disorders.

Abstract
The vasorelaxant effect of polyphenols is well known, and the mortality rate due to coronary artery disease is low in people who consume polyphenol-containing foods. We aimed to elucidate the mechanism by which polyphenols derived from persimmon juice (PJ) and persimmon leaves (PLs) induce vasorelaxation and suppress vasocontraction in the superior mesenteric arteries isolated from male Sprague Dawley rats. Vasocontraction was induced with 1 µM phenylephrine, and polyphenol-induced vasorelaxation was expressed as a percentage of the previous tone induced by phenylephrine. PJ powder (100 mg/L) induced higher levels of vasorelaxation (mean ± standard error of the mean, 88.6% ± 4.4%) than PLs powder (1 g/L; 72.0% ± 10.8%). Nitric oxide pathway inhibitors (NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester + carboxy-PTIO) did not affect persimmon-derived polyphenol-induced vasorelaxation, whereas potassium chloride, tetraethylammonium, and potassium-channel inhibitors did. Vasorelaxation was endothelium independent with both extracts. Phenylephrine-induced vasocontraction was suppressed by pretreatment with PJ and PLs powder, even when inositol triphosphate-mediated Ca2+ release and extracellular Ca2+ influx were inhibited. These results suggest that persimmon-derived polyphenol phytocomplex cause vasorelaxation and inhibit vasocontraction through hyperpolarization of smooth muscle cells. Persimmon-derived polyphenols may be able to prevent cardiovascular diseases caused by abnormal contraction of blood vessels.

Abstract
Ageing, in a natural way, leads to the gradual worsening of the functional capacity of all systems and, eventually, to death. This process is strongly associated with higher metabolic and oxidative stress, low-grade inflammation, accumulation of DNA mutations and increased levels of related damage. Detrimental changes that accumulate in body cells and tissues with time raise the vulnerability to environmental challenges and enhance the risk of major chronic diseases and mortality. There are several theses concerning the mechanisms of ageing: genetic, free radical telomerase, mitochondrial decline, metabolic damage, cellular senescence, neuroendocrine theory, Hay-flick limit and membrane theories, cellular death as well as the accumulation of toxic and non-toxic garbage. Moreover, ageing is associated with structural changes within the myocardium, cardiac conduction system, the endocardium as well as the vasculature. With time, the cardiac structures lose elasticity, and fibrotic changes occur in the heart valves. Ageing is also associated with a higher risk of atherosclerosis. The results of studies suggest that some natural compounds may slow down this process and protect against age-related diseases. Animal studies imply that some of them may prolong the lifespan; however, this trend is not so obvious in humans.

Abstract
Parkinson's disease (PD) and Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) are neurological disorders, pathologically characterized by chronic degeneration of dopaminergic neurons and motor neurons respectively. There is still no cure or effective treatment against the disease progression and most of the treatments are symptomatic. The present review offers an overview of the different factors involved in the pathogenesis of these diseases. Subsequently, we focused on the recent advanced studies of dietary polyphenols and stem cell therapies, which have made it possible to slow down the progression of neurodegeneration. To date, stem cells and different polyphenols have been used for the directional induction of neural stem cells into dopaminergic neurons and motor neurons. We have also discussed their involvement in the modulation of different signal transduction pathways and growth factor levels in various in vivo and in vitro studies. Likewise stem cells, polyphenols also exhibit the potential of neuroprotection by their anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant properties regulating the growth factors levels and molecular signaling events. Overall this review provides a detailed insight into recent strategies that promise the use of polyphenol with stem cell therapy for the possible treatment of PD and ALS.
