Abstract
PURPOSE Fixed restorations and dental enamel have different structures that produce different wear on opposing teeth, resulting in clinical problems. Therefore, it is necessary to determine the type of restoration that causes less wear on naturally opposing teeth to make recommendations. The objective of this study was to systematically analyze the evidence from observational studies and clinical trials on enamel wear in different ceramic restorations. STUDY SELECTION The designs of the included studies were randomized clinical trials (RTCs), non-randomized clinical trials (non-RTCs), and observational studies (OS). The studies must answer the research question, be available in full text, be written in English or Spanish, and have had at least six months of follow-up. Protocol number: CRD42023397759. RESULTS After screening 499 records, 20 RTCs were subjected to data extraction, 10 were excluded, 10 were included in the systematic review, and only 5 were included in the network meta-analysis. The risk of bias assessment reported moderate to high risk of bias, quality, and certainty of evidence was evaluated and rated as moderate. Network meta-analysis showed higher enamel wear was observed in natural dental enamel against metal-ceramic antagonists. CONCLUSIONS Enamel wear occurs in all teeth, even when the antagonist is a natural tooth. The wear is larger on surfaces with the ceramic crown antagonists studied (metal-ceramic, glazed zirconia, and polished zirconia). It is necessary to conduct additional clinical trials with larger follow-up periods and sample sizes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the effect of chairside adjustment and polishing on the clinical performance of zirconia endocrowns and digitally calculate the opposing enamel wear. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 20 participants received zirconia endocrowns on their endodontically treated lower first molars. All endocrowns were fabricated using CAD/CAM technology. According to the occlusal adjustments needed for the restorations, patients were divided into two groups: Group ZG with 10 glazed monolithic zirconia endocrowns and Group ZP with 10 adjusted and polished zirconia endocrowns. Bonded endocrowns were evaluated clinically and radiographically for 24 months following modified FDI criteria. Wear of the antagonistic enamel was calculated at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months using an intraoral scanner and Geomagic software. RESULTS The overall survival rate of the 20 endocrowns was 100%, according to the Kaplan-Meier survival method. None of the endocrowns were replaced during the follow-up. After 2 years, polished zirconia caused enamel wear (0.422 ± 0.130 mm3), while glazed zirconia caused enamel wear (0.491 ± 0.105 mm3), with no statistically significant difference (p = 0.108). CONCLUSION Both glazed and polished monolithic zirconia endocrowns showed comparable enamel wear after a 2-year clinical follow-up, with no significant difference. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Glazing or intra-oral polishing could be applied to monolithic zirconia endocrowns with minimal antagonist enamel wear.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This article puts forward consensus recommendations from PROSEC North America regarding single indirect restorations made from ceramic and nonmetallic biomaterials in posterior teeth. OVERVIEW The consensus process involved a multidisciplinary panel and three consensus workshops. A systematic literature review was conducted across five databases to gather evidence. The recommendations, informed by findings from systematic reviews and formulated based on a two-phase e-Delphi survey, emphasize a comprehensive treatment strategy that includes noninvasive measures alongside restorative interventions for managing dental caries and tooth wear. The recommendations advocate for selecting between direct and indirect restorations on a case-by-case basis, favoring inlays and onlays over crowns to align with minimally invasive dentistry principles. The recommendations highlight the critical role of selecting restorative biomaterials based on clinical performance, esthetic properties, and adherence to manufacturer guidelines. They emphasize the importance of precision in restorative procedures, including tooth preparation, impression taking, contamination control, and luting. Regular follow-up and maintenance tailored to individual patient needs are crucial for the longevity of ceramic and nonmetallic restorations. CONCLUSIONS These PROSEC recommendations provide a framework for dental practitioners to deliver high-quality restorative care, advocating for personalized treatment planning and minimally invasive approaches to optimize oral health outcomes. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The PROSEC North America recommendations highlight the importance of minimally invasive techniques in posterior tooth restorations using ceramic and non-metallic biomaterials. These principles prioritize tooth structure conservation and personalized treatment planning, essential for enhancing clinical outcomes and long-term oral health.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Clinical information on enamel wear opposing 5 mol% yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (5Y-TZP) or lithium disilicate crowns is lacking. Moreover, the effect of surface roughness on the wear of enamel antagonists remains unclear. PURPOSE The purpose of this clinical study was to quantify the vertical wear and total volume of wear while also measuring the surface roughness of antagonists at 6-month intervals over 2 years. MATERIAL AND METHODS A tooth-supported first molar 5Y-TZP Lava Esthetic Fluorescent Zirconia crown or an IPS e.max CAD lithium disilicate crown was randomly provided for 24 participants (n=12). The contralateral first molar and opposite teeth were the natural enamel controls. The crowns were fabricated using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) technology and then polished. The data were gathered every 6 months at recall appointments with an intraoral scanner and a polyvinyl siloxane impression. A 3-dimensional (3D) comparative software program was used to measure the maximum vertical and volume loss on opposing enamel, as well as on the enamel control on the opposite side of the mouth. The surface of epoxy resin replicas was analyzed using a scanning electron microscope. The surface roughness of the cusp replica was measured with a 3D laser microscope. The crown's antagonist enamel and natural enamel wear were compared using a 2-way repeated measure ANOVA (α=.05). RESULTS No significant difference was found in the average volume loss between the crown's antagonist enamel (ZTE 0.042 ±0.005 mm3, LTE 0.048 ±0.006 mm3) and the enamel control (ZCE 0.046 ±0.004 mm3, LCE 0.050 ±0.005 mm3) (P>.05). No significant difference was found in surface roughness between the crown's antagonist enamel (antagonist enamel of zirconia group [ZTE] 0.7 ±0.3 µm, antagonist enamel of lithium disilicate group [LTE] 0.6 ±0.3 µm) and the enamel control (enamel control of zirconia group [ZCE] 0.7 ±0.3 µm, enamel control of lithium disilicate group [LCE] 0.5 ±0.2 µm) in both zirconia and lithium disilicate groups (P>.05). Also, no correlation was found between the amount of wear and the roughness of the surface. The wear patterns observed on the opposing enamel surfaces of the monolithic zirconia and lithium disilicate materials were found to be similar to those seen on natural enamel. CONCLUSIONS A 2-year clinical investigation found that polished lithium disilicate and 5Y-TZP crowns did not affect enamel wear more than enamel against enamel, contrary to laboratory studies. Another finding revealed that surface roughness did not significantly affect wear.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The use of multilayered monolithic zirconia ceramics is becoming popular because it simplifies the production of esthetic restorations. The effect of clinical adjustment on the optical properties of these ceramics, especially strength-gradient zirconia, remains unclear. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the color and translucency of gradient multilayered zirconia brands after grinding and polishing. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty 10×10×1-mm monolithic zirconia specimens were milled from 6 zirconia brands (Ceramill Zolid HT White, Ceramill Zolid HT Preshade, Ceramill Zolid FX Multicolor, VITA YZ XT Multicolor, IPS e.max ZirCAD Prime, and KATANA YML). The zirconia specimens were milled to include all layers of A2 preshaded multilayered zirconia blanks (A2 shade) except Ceramill Zolid HT White and Ceramill Zolid HT Preshade. Ceramill Zolid HT White specimens were milled from a white zirconia blank with subsequent shading. The color coordinates and the relative translucency parameter after glazing and after grinding and polishing were determined with a reflectance spectrophotometer, and the relative translucency parameter and contrast ratio were measured. The differences in color and translucency were calculated. The data were analyzed using 2-way ANOVA and 1-way ANOVA tests followed by the post hoc Tukey test (α=.05). RESULTS Statistically significant changes (P<.001) in the color coordinates measured before and after grinding and polishing were detected for each zirconia brand except for the KATANA YML that showed no significant difference (P=.686) in lightness. The highest color difference after grinding and polishing was detected in group KATANA YML. The 2-way ANOVA test showed a statistically significant interaction (P<.001) between the zirconia brand and the grinding and polishing regarding the relative translucency parameter. The zirconia brand had a significant impact on the relative translucency parameter before and after grinding and polishing (both P<.001). CONCLUSIONS Except for KATANA YML, the color change in multilayered zirconia after clinical adjustment with polishing was not beyond the clinically acceptable limit of the color difference. Although clinical adjustment with polishing reduced the translucency of gradient zirconia, the change in translucency was below the clinically detectable threshold value of the translucency difference.

Abstract
The contact between enamel and an antagonist surface is the primary factor in tooth wear. Loss of tooth structure can cause changes in occlusion, chewing functionality, dental sensitivity, and appearance. However, enamel wear caused by opposing restorations is multifactorial and there is a lack of consensus regarding its behavior. This meta-narrative review assesses the multiple factors that affect enamel wear when using two common indirect restorative materials, lithium disilicate and zirconia. PubMed, Google Scholar, MEDLINE, and CINAHL databases were searched using keywords "zirconia," "lithium disilicate," "antagonistic tooth wear," and "enamel wear" to identify studies related to enamel wear caused by zirconia and lithium disilicate restorations. The Realist and Meta-narrative Evidence Syntheses: Evolving Standards (RAMESES) publication standard was used to report this meta-narrative literature review. Four broad categories of influencing factors were identified and reviewed: (1) mechanical and physical properties, (2) wear behavior and microstructural characteristics, (3) surface state, and (4) environmental factors. We conclude that well-polished zirconia is a more favorable indirect restorative material than lithium disilicate in terms of tribology because of its microstructure and surface integrity during wear. This review will enable clinicians to better comprehend the intricate nature of tooth wear caused by dental restorations.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM Because the use of zirconia in dentistry is relatively new, the number of published studies on the subject is scarce, even though material selection is an important factor in clinical performance. Therefore, a systematic assessment of the impact of the prosthetic material, framework design, veneering material, and manufacturing process is required. PURPOSE The purpose of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to investigate the survival and success rates of feldspathic porcelain veneered zirconia (VZir) in comparison with monolithic zirconia (MZir) complete arch implant-supported prostheses (CAISPs). A secondary objective was to assess the influence of the type of loading, the presence or absence of a cantilever, the type of zirconia used, the location, and the opposing arch on complications rates and patient satisfaction. MATERIAL AND METHODS An electronic search of the MEDLINE database (via PubMed), Scopus, Science Direct, Cochrane Library, and OpenGrey was carried out. The criteria described in the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses statement were used. The search was restricted from January 2000 to January 2022. RESULTS The systematic search resulted in 20 articles that met the established criteria. In total, 751 patients (VZir=302; MZir=449) with 3038 CAISPs (VZir=368; MZir=2670) were analyzed. Higher prosthetic survival and success rates were found in MZir compared with VZir CAISPs (100% and 95.45%, respectively). The meta-analysis found significantly fewer complications related to MZir (9.4% [4.8%-14.1%]) compared with VZir (33.7% [17.5%-49.9%]). CONCLUSIONS Based on the findings of this systematic review, MZir CAISPs had higher survival and success rates than VZir CAISPs, with significantly fewer prosthetic complications. The influence of factors such as the type of functional loading, the presence of a cantilever, the material used in the prosthodontic workflow, the location of the CAISP, and the type of antagonist arch on the performance of Zir CAISPs remains unclear.

Abstract
AIM The aim of this umbrella review was to systematically review the systematic reviews on antagonist enamel wear opposing zirconia crowns compared to other ceramics and natural enamel. SETTINGS AND DESIGN This was an umbrella review following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. MATERIALS AND METHODS An electronic search of PubMed, Cochrane Central, EBSCOhost, and Google Scholar search engines for articles published from January 1, 2013, to January 1, 2023, was conducted using keywords "enamel wear," "zirconia," "feldspathic," "dental ceramics," and "Y-TZP" to identify systematic reviews on antagonist enamel wear opposing zirconia crowns compared to other ceramics and natural enamel. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED Qualitative analysis. RESULTS A total of 86 articles were obtained through electronic search, of which four articles were selected after abstract screening that met the inclusion criteria for evaluating antagonist enamel wear. As compared to feldspathic groups, zirconia had substantially less antagonist wear, while surface polishing exhibited less enamel wear than glazing. Because of the heterogeneity in study design, measurement methods, and outcome variables, a meta-analysis was not possible. CONCLUSIONS Over time, the opposing enamel wear caused by polished monolithic zirconia will be either equal to or less than that of natural enamel wear. Polished monolithic zirconia also maintains lower values of enamel wear compared to metal ceramics, feldspathic porcelains, and lithium disilicate.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to evaluate the maximum vertical wear, volume wear, and surface characteristic of antagonist enamel, opposing monolithic zirconia or lithium disilicate crowns. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study comprised 24 participants (n = 12), who were randomly allocated to receive either a 5 mol% Y-TZP or a lithium disilicate crown in positions which would oppose the natural first molar tooth. The contralateral first molar along with its antagonist was considered as the enamel opposing natural enamel control. Data collection was performed using an intraoral scanner and polyvinylsiloxane impression. The means of the maximum vertical loss and the volume loss at the occlusal contact areas of the crowns and the various natural antagonists were measured by 3D comparison software. A scanning electron microscope was subsequently used to assess the wear characteristics. Results The one-year results from 22 participants (n = 11) indicated no significant differences when comparing the zirconia crown's antagonist enamel (40.28 ± 9.11 µm, 0.04 ± 0.02 mm3) and the natural enamel wear (38.91 ± 7.09 µm, 0.04 ± 0.02 mm3) (P > .05). Also, there is no significant differences between lithium disilicate crown's antagonist enamel (47.81 ± 9.41 µm, 0.04 ± 0.02 mm3) and the natural enamel wear (39.11 ± 7.90 µm, 0.04 ± 0.02 mm3) (P > .05). Conclusion While some studies suggested that monolithic zirconia caused less wear on opposing enamel than lithium disilicate, this study found similar wear levels to enamel for both materials compared to natural teeth.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aims to identify the two-dimensional and three-dimensional analyses and evaluate the loss of tooth structure in the tooth's different constituent elements and the ceramic antagonist's surface. METHODS In this study, three groups (n = 10) represented by different ceramic systems (lithium disilicate [GDis], lithium silicate reinforced with zirconia [GSil], and monolithic zirconia [GZir]) were evaluated. Each group obtained ten ceramic blocks and submitted them to the sintering/crystallization process. To carry out the wear test, healthy mandibular premolars were used as the specimens and the ceramic blocks as antagonists. The premolars were submitted to two-dimensional and three-dimensional analyses using a computerized microtomography (µTC) before and after the wear test. The wear test was performed with 30 N and 300,000 cycles load, with occlusion, laterality, and disocclusion movements. RESULTS The statistical analysis comparing the loss of two-dimensional tooth structure showed a statistically significant difference among all groups (p < 0.05). Statistical analysis comparing the percentage of loss of three-dimensional tooth structure showed a statistically significant difference between groups GDis and GSil and between groups GDis and GZir. However, when comparing GSil with GZir, no statistically significant difference was found. The qualitative analysis of the teeth showed that GDis showed considerable enamel loss and dentin exposure, GSil showed enamel wear with flattening the cusp without dentin exposure, and GZir showed minimal enamel wear without dentin exposure. In the qualitative analysis of ceramic antagonists, more significant wear of the ceramic material for GDis was observed, followed by the GSil and GZir groups, respectively. SIGNIFICANCE The use of the lithium disilicate should be cautious, restricting it to areas with lower masticatory forces. Areas of higher masticatory forces showed a large amount of antagonist wear, with dentin involvement. This can lead to dentinal hypersensitivity, risk of compromising patients' occlusion, by harming group disocclusion guides, causing pain and temporomandibular disorders.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This article highlights a CAD/CAM complete-mouth rehabilitation in an 82-year-old patient by means of a complete maxillary prosthesis and mandibular implant- and tooth-supported fixed restorations made from multilayered zirconia. CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS Comprehensive complete-mouth rehabilitations in elderly patients with adaptation of the occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) often present particular challenges. This applies especially when exacting functional and esthetic requirements are to be met and the treatment should not cause the patient too much effort, still ensuring the highest level of quality and efficiency and a low intervention rate. CONCLUSION The digital approach used for the present patient allowed for an efficient treatment procedure, facilitated virtual evaluations using a face-scan, and enhanced the predictability of the prosthodontic outcome. The approach enabled some steps required in the conventional protocol to be omitted, resulting in a straightforward clinical treatment with minimal strain on the patient. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Because of the comprehensive recording of extraoral and intraoral data, for example with a facial scanner, it was possible to transfer a digital replica of the patient to the dental laboratory technician. With this protocol, many steps can be performed in the absence of the real patient.

Abstract
Background/purpose Subsurface scattering from translucent material would affect the digital scans. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of translucency of ceramic restorative materials and scanning aid conditions on the accuracy of intraoral scans. Materials and methods Identical anatomic contour crowns with ten ceramic restorative materials were fabricated: five zirconia, three lithium disilicate glass-ceramic, and two leucite reinforced glass-ceramic. The models with ceramic crowns were digitized with an intraoral scanner (IOS) and analyzed for accuracy (n = 10) with and without a scanning aid. Scan time efficiency was recorded. Square-shaped specimens with 1.0-mm thickness were fabricated with the same materials, and translucency parameter (TP) values were measured. One-way ANOVA, Welch ANOVA, and a post-hoc pairwise comparison or independent t-test were used for trueness and time analysis, and the F-test was used to examine the precision (α = 0.05). Pearson correlation test was conducted. Results Significant differences were revealed for trueness with no scanning aid condition and for TP values (P < 0.05). In contrast, no statistically significant differences were observed for trueness with a scanning aid. A strong correlation (r = 0.854, P < 0.01) between TP value and trueness with no scanning aid was revealed. By applying a scanning aid, trueness was improved and scan time efficiency significantly increased (P < 0.05). Conclusion The translucency of ceramic restorative materials negatively affects the accuracy of IOS scan without a scanning aid; however, the scan accuracy and time efficiency of IOS scanning for ceramic restorations can be improved by applying scanning aid, and prostheses with high quality without unnecessary labor can be produced.

Abstract
PURPOSE Various surface roughness parameters are utilized to describe the surface in the tooth to ceramics abrasion and to assess the resulting wear. The use of three-dimensional parameters may offer a better estimation for wear and an improved deduced clinical surface treatment. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of various surface roughness parameters of zirconia and lithium disilicate ceramics on the wear of steatite antagonists. MATERIAL AND METHODS Forty zirconia specimens with a diameter of 7 mm and a thickness of 3 mm and 40 lithium disilicate specimens with the dimensions 10×10×4 mm were each divided into five subgroups. Two subgroups were treated with different clinically established diamond burs; a third subgroup was treated with a silicone polishing set. Two additional subgroups were produced by glazing the surfaces after treatment. Surface roughness parameters were determined by laser scanning microscopy. All specimens underwent 1.2 million loading cycles using steatite antagonists. After regular intervals of cycles, precision impressions were made to assess the wear. The correlation between wear and different roughness parameters was evaluated using the Spearman correlation test. RESULTS For the glazed zirconia, unglazed zirconia, and glazed lithium disilicate specimens no significant correlations (p > 0.05) between the investigated roughness parameters and antagonist wear could be found. In the unglazed lithium disilicate groups, significant (p ≤ 0.05) correlations with steatite substance loss could be found for several roughness parameters after 1.2 million cycles. CONCLUSIONS For lithium disilicate, it seems not sufficient to use only one roughness parameter to indicate the wear behavior of the surface. There was no correlation between wear and the tested roughness parameters of zirconia surfaces.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the wear of the antagonist tooth in ceramic restorations. MATERIAL AND METHODS This study was carried out based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) recommendations; it was also registered in PROSPERO (register number: CRD42022316252). Three databases were consulted in the literature search, Embase, Scopus, and Web of Science. The citation searching was conducted by two researchers independently. The clinical studies that evaluated wear in antagonist teeth concerning ceramic restoration were included. Twelve articles were selected after eliminating duplicates ones and applying the inclusion criteria, and two were chosen through citation. Fourteen articles were considered for the qualitative and quantitative analysis (meta-regression and meta-analysis). RESULTS The mean linear wear of the antagonist tooth in relation to feldspathic was 8.914 μm, for lithium disilicate it was 0.018 μm, and for zirconia it was 0.257 μm. The mean volumetric wear of the antagonist tooth in relation to feldspathic was 0.273 mm3, for hybrid ceramic it was 0.030 mm3, for lithium disilicate it was 0.018 mm3, and for zirconia it was 0.014 mm3. The mean natural tooth wear was 0.7974 μm per month. Tooth wear caused by zirconia at six months was 31.755 μm, at 12 months it was 24.648 μm, and at 24 months it was 20.662 μm. CONCLUSIONS Feldspathic produces greater wear of the antagonist tooth from ceramic restorations linearly and volumetrically. In addition, zirconia generates the least wear that will decrease over time, and it will be equal to or less than the natural wear in the tooth.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the 3-year cumulative survival rates of posterior single monolithic zirconia crowns (MZCs) and their antagonists, and to analyze the influencing factors. METHODS The clinical outcomes of posterior single MZCs and their abutment teeth with antagonists, and the antagonists between April 2014 and September 2020 were evaluated retrospectively. The 3-year cumulative survival rates were calculated and associations between the survival time and predictor variables ("Jaw", "Tooth", and "Pulpal condition") were also verified using Cox proportional hazards models and hazard ratios (HRs). RESULTS The 3-year cumulative survival rate of single MZCs was 89.8% (9 of 177 MZCs, 95% confidence interval (CI): 80.0-95.1%). Cox proportional hazards models showed non-vital teeth were significantly associated with failure (HR: 2.76e + 9, P = 0.012). The 3-year cumulative survival rate of antagonists was 94.8% (7 of 171 antagonists, 95% CI: 89.3-97.6%). Non-vital antagonists were also identified as an independent predictor for failure in Cox proportional hazards models (HR: 7.83, P = 0.03). CONCLUSION Although posterior single MZCs were clinically acceptable, non-vital pulpal condition could be a potential risk factor for failures in the abutment and antagonist teeth of MZCs.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to present current dental ceramic materials and processing methods. The clinical indication was emphasized on basis of the material's microstructure and composition. Studies of ceramic characterization were also discussed, as they impact the clinical indication and serve as a parameter for the development of new materials. The novel strategies were mostly found aiming to mimic the natural dental structures, provide mechanical reliability, and develop predictable restorations in terms of adaptation and design.

Abstract
Tooth enamel wear occurs because of daily mastication and occlusion. This study investigated the wear behavior of bovine teeth against aesthetic restorative materials in vitro. Abrader specimens were fabricated using four tooth-colored restorative materials (zirconia, lithium disilicate glass ceramic, dental porcelain, and resin composite), with bovine tooth enamel as a control. Flattened bovine tooth enamel was used as the substrate specimen. These materials were characterized by Vickers hardness tests and surface roughness measurements. Two-body wear tests between the abrader and substrate specimens were performed, and the worn topographies were evaluated using a contour-measuring instrument and 3D laser microscope. The restorative materials and bovine tooth enamel had similar surface roughness but different hardness and wear behaviors. Bovine teeth showed the largest wear in tooth–tooth contact as the abrader and substrate specimens. Compared to bovine teeth, zirconia, lithium disilicate glass ceramic, and dental porcelain showed greater hardness and less wear on their surfaces, and less substrate wear of the opposite tooth enamel. The lowest hardness resin composite showed intermediate wear on its surface, resulting in the lowest substrate wear. Accordingly, dentists should pay attention to the selection of restorative materials to reconstruct their morphologies owing to different wear behaviors.

Abstract
The present study aimed to evaluate the wear rate of polymer-infiltrated network composites and ceramics against enamel in a bruxism-simulated scenario. Ninety-six (n = 96) molars were divided into six groups (n = 16) according to their occlusal material: group 1—a polymer-infiltrated network ceramic (PINC); group 2—a second polymer-infiltrated network ceramic (PINC2); group 3—nanohybrid resin-based composite (CO); group 4—cubic zirconia (ZR); group 5—lithium disilicate (LS); and group 6—sound enamel (EN). A laser scanner was used to digitalize all of the occlusal surfaces before and after a fatigue test, which was conducted with a chewing simulator set at 80 N and semicircular movement in order to simulate bruxist movement and loads. Statistical analysis of volume loss was performed with a one-way ANOVA and post hoc Bonferroni test. ZR had significantly inferior wear to PINC (p ≤ 0.01) and CO (p = 0.04). LS wore the antagonist enamel significantly more than PINC, CO, PINC2 and EN (p ≤ 0.01). On the other hand, ZR wore the antagonist enamel significantly more than CO (p ≤ 0.01) and PINC2 (p = 0.05). In conclusion, PINCs better preserved antagonist enamel at the expense of a higher wear of their own. LS causes significantly higher enamel wear compared with PINCs. ZR caused significantly higher enamel wear compared with CO and PINC2, but it was wear-resistant.

Abstract
Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has been widely applied in fixed dental prostheses, comprising crowns, fixed partial dentures, and post-and-core. PEEK’s excellent mechanical properties facilitate better stress distribution than conventional materials, protecting the abutment teeth. However, the stiffness of PEEK is not sufficient, which can be improved via fiber reinforcement. PEEK is biocompatible. It is nonmutagenic, noncytotoxic, and nonallergenic. However, the chemical stability of PEEK is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, PEEK is nondegradable and intraoral corrosion is minimized. On the other hand, the inert surface makes adhesive bonding difficult. Numerous strategies for improving the adhesive properties of PEEK have been explored, including acid etching, plasma treatment, airborne particle abrasion, laser treatment, and adhesive systems.

Abstract
Recently, polyetheretherketone (PEEK) has been introduced to the dental market as a high-performance and chemically inert biomaterial. This study aimed to compare the wear resistance, abrasiveness, color stability, and displacement resistance of zirconia and PEEK milled crowns. An ideal tooth preparation of a first maxillary molar was done and scanned by an intraoral scanner to make a digital model. Then, the prosthetic crown was digitally designed on the CAD software, and the STL file was milled in zirconia (CaroZiir S, Carol Zircolite Pvt. Ltd., Gujarat, India) and PEEK (BioHpp, Bredent GmbH, Senden, Germany) crowns using five-axis CNC milling machines. The wear resistance, color stability, and displacement resistance of the milled monolithic zirconia with unfilled PEEK crowns using a chewing simulator with thermocyclic aging (120,000 cycles) were compared. The antagonist wear, material wear, color stability, and displacement were evaluated and compared among the groups using the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney U-test. Zirconia was shown to be three times more abrasive than PEEK (p value < 0.05). Zirconia had twice the wear resistance of PEEK (p value < 0.05). Zirconia was more color stable than PEEK (p value < 0.05). PEEK had more displacement resistance than zirconia (p value < 0.05). PEEK offers minimal abrasion, better stress modulation through plastic deformation, and good color stability, which make it a promising alternative to zirconia crown.

Abstract
Little information is available about enamel wear caused by zirconia brackets, an inadvertent side effect of orthodontic treatment. The purpose of this study was to examine potential enamel damage induced by contact with zirconia brackets. Sliding and impact wear simulations were performed using bovine enamel specimens positioned at a 25° slant to a zirconium ball to determine wear behaviour. Different chewing patterns, tapping and grinding, were simulated. Specimens were profiled using confocal laser scanning microscopy, and the mean maximum depth and surface roughness were measured. Scanning electron microscopy was also performed. The mean maximum depth of wear values differed according to the number of mastication cycles, with a higher number of cycles producing higher depths of wear. The facet wear depth was significantly greater with the tapping pattern than with the grinding pattern. Scanning electron microscopic observation of the wear facets revealed that surface textures at the edges were rougher than those at the centre of all facets. The results of this study indicated that enamel wear was induced by contact with zirconia brackets during the early period of mastication, and that the patterns and number of cycles of mastication affected the wear progression of enamel.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the wear rate of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) composites, polyetheretherketones and glass ceramics. MATERIAL AND METHODS Our study groups were prepared from two different resin-based composites (Brillant Crios, Cerasmart), a glass ceramic (IPS Emax CAD) and reinforced polyetheretherketone (BioHPP) material (n = 10). Premolar teeth were used as antagonists. The specimens, which were subjected to two body wear tests (240,000 cycles, 1.2 Hz, 50N) in the chewing simulator, were scanned with a 3D laser scanner both before and after the wear test. Volume loss and wear depth were determined by means of the obtained images software program. The wear pattern was examined by scanning electron microscopy. Kruskal Wallis test served for analyzing. RESULTS The least volume loss and wear depth were seen in the polyetheretherketone material (0.06 ± 0.04 mm3 , 0.02 ± 0.01 mm), while the maximum volume loss was seen in the groups containing resin-based composite. (p = 0.05). The volume loss value in glass ceramics is between CAD/CAM composites and polyetheretherketone. CONCLUSION The behavior of polyetheretherketone against enamel was different from glass ceramics and composite materials in terms of the amount of wear. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Polyetheretheketone can be considered as an alternative to other chairside materials in terms of wear resistance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To present an overview on systematic reviews on prosthodontic zirconia restorations and to discuss long-term complications as well as information on anatomical and functional changes to the masticatory system. DATA/SOURCES MEDLINE, EMBASE, Trip medical, and Cochrane Library databases were searched for systematic reviews up to February 2021. Bias was assessed and clinical survival and complications were analyzed. STUDY SELECTION 38 eligible articles published between 2006 and 2021 were included. The reviews were based on 128 in vivo studies on approximately 10,000 zirconia restorations. 5-year cumulative survival rates varied between 91.2% and 95.9% for tooth-supported (TS) single crowns (SC), 89.4% and 100% for TS multi-unit fixed dental prostheses (FDP), 97.1% and 97.6% for implant-supported (IS) SCs and 93.0% and 100% for IS FDPs. Chipping was the most often technical complication, followed by framework fracture, loss of retention, marginal discrepancies/discoloration, occlusal roughness and abutment/screw loosening. Color mismatch was the only esthetic complication. Biological complications were caries, endodontic complications, tooth fracture, periodontal disease, abrasion/attrition, persisting pain, high sensitivity, peri‑implantitis and soft tissue issues. Patients with bruxism were only examined sporadically. CONCLUSIONS 5-year results for zirconia restorations were satisfactory. The predominant technical problem of veneering fractures could be overcome with adapted design or fabrication and application of monolithic restorations, but reviews of clinical studies on this subject are rare. The impact of zirconia restorations on the masticatory system remains unclear. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Zirconia restorations are experiencing a rapidly increasing use in dental practice. Being highly wear-resistant, hard and durable, it can be assumed that they do not follow natural abrasion and changes in the masticatory system. Possible long-term effects on the stomatognathic system as a whole should therefore be considered.

Abstract
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The wear of monolithic zirconia against enamel has been widely studied, but how zirconia affects different opposing restorative materials is not clear. PURPOSE The purpose of this in vitro study was to investigate the depth of wear and volumetric loss of different restorative materials opposed by monolithic zirconia. MATERIAL AND METHODS Sixty-six Ø10×3-mm specimens (n=11) were fabricated from monolithic zirconia, zirconia reinforced ceramic, lithium disilicate ceramic, feldspathic ceramic, ORMOCER, and ceramic optimized polymer. A 2-body pin-on-disk wear test was performed by using monolithic zirconia pins. The specimens were scanned with a noncontact profilometer after the tests. The scan parameters were a frame size area of 1.5×1.5 mm, frequency of 400 Hz, and scan sensitivity of 2 μm. After the evaluation of depth and volume loss, the specimens were analyzed with a scanning electron microscope. The Kruskal-Wallis test was used to analyze the differences in wear values across the specimen groups, and pairwise comparison tests were performed with a post hoc test (α=.05). RESULTS Maximum depth of wear was 257.55 ±18.88 μm for lithium disilicate ceramic, 295.36 ±14.46 μm for zirconia reinforced ceramic, 421.82 ±214.49 μm for ORMOCER, 333.73 ±79.09 μm for ceramic optimized polymer, 146.27 ±22.86 μm for feldspathic ceramic, and 41.55 ±5.04 μm for monolithic zirconia. The depth of wear was not significantly different among lithium disilicate, zirconia-reinforced ceramic, ORMOCER, and ceramic optimized polymer (P<.05). However, the depth of wear of monolithic zirconia and feldspathic ceramic was less than that of other materials (P<.001). Volume loss of lithium disilicate was 1.68 ±0.25 mm3, 1.08 ±0.35 mm3 for zirconia reinforced ceramic, 4.29 ±2.91 mm3 for ORMOCER, 2.46 ±0.63 mm3 for resin ceramic, 1.07 ±0.09 mm3 for feldspathic ceramic, and 0.19 ±0.02 mm3 for monolithic zirconia. Feldspathic ceramic and monolithic zirconia had significantly less volume loss than the other groups (P<.001), and the difference between them for volume loss was statistically insignificant (P>.05). CONCLUSIONS The tested ceramic-based materials had favorable wear resistance compared with the tested composite resin-based ones. However, the ceramics tended to crack formation than the composite resins.

Abstract
The digital workflow and the application of Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) to prosthodontics present the clinician with the possibility of adopting new materials that confer several advantages. Especially in the case of zirconia, these innovations have profoundly changed daily practice. This paper compares the satisfaction and perception of patients who received implant-supported single crowns (SC) and fixed partial dentures (FPD) made from zirconia, either monolithic or partially veneered, after 3 years of follow-up; the success and survival rate of these restorations were also measured. Forty patients, who had been previously treated with implant-supported SC or FPD, either monolithic or partially veneered, and submitted to a yearly maintenance program, were recalled 3 years after their treatment and requested to complete an 8-question questionnaire regarding their perceptions of the treatment. Any mechanical or biological complication that had occurred from the time of delivery was also recorded. Patients that experienced ≥1 complication were less likely to be prone to repeat the treatment. The 3-year success rate was 92.6% for monolithic restoration and 92.3% for partially veneered restoration, while the survival rate was 100% for both restorations. The 3-year follow-up found that monolithic and partially veneered zirconia restorations are both well-accepted treatment options, and patients preferred the veneered restorations (0.76, p < 0.05) from an aesthetic point of view. According to our results, monolithic and veneered zirconia restorations are both reliable treatment options and are both equally accepted by patients.

Abstract
Background The abrasion behavior of various ceramics is rarely investigated, though it is relevant for the clinical success of such restorations. The aim of this in vivo study was to evaluate the wear of feldspathic-ceramic-veneered zirconium oxide frameworks over a period of at least 10 years. Methods The abrasion behavior of 15 bridge constructions from 15 different participants was examined after a period of 3, 5, and 10 years using plaster models, which were then subjected to a scanning process on the Atos II industrial scanner and digitized for three-dimensional evaluation of the abrasion by the corresponding software (ATOS Professional 7.6). The individual post-examination models were compared to the baseline model and deviations calculated in the sense of the largest, punctual loss of material in millimeters (“minimal distance”), the average abrasion in millimeters (“mean distance”), and the volume decrease in cubic millimeters (“integrated distance”). Statistical analyses were performed using the Wilcoxon sign rank test or mixed regression models. Multiple testing was considered by Benjamini-Hochberg correction. The significance level was set at 0.05. Results We found steadily increasing wear of the ceramic. The average volume decrease was significant (P < 0.001) at 3 years and 10 years (− 3.25 mm3 and − 8.11 mm3, respectively). Conclusions The results of this study indicate that the rate of volume loss in feldspathic-ceramic-veneered zirconia frameworks in the posterior region increases significantly over time. An increasing frequency of parameters was observed, particularly in the second half of the study period. However, the use of this class of materials can be considered clinically acceptable. Abstract
This comprehensive review of the 2019 restorative dental literature is offered to inform busy dentists regarding remarkable publications and noteworthy progress made in the profession. Developed by the Scientific Investigation Committee of the American Academy of Restorative Dentistry, each author brings discipline-specific expertise to 1 of 8 sections of the report: (1) prosthodontics; (2) periodontics, alveolar bone, and peri-implant tissues; (3) implant dentistry; (4) dental materials and therapeutics; (5) occlusion and temporomandibular disorders; (6) sleep-related breathing disorders; (7) oral medicine and oral and maxillofacial surgery; and (8) dental caries and cariology. The report targets important information likely to influence day-to-day dental treatment decisions. Each review is not intended to stand alone but to update interested readers so that they may visit source material when greater detail is desired. As the profession moves toward evidence-based clinical decision-making, an incredible volume of potentially valuable dental literature continues to increase. It is the intention of this review and its authors to provide assistance in negotiating the extensive dental literature published in 2019. It is our hope that readers find this work useful in the clinical management of dental patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to determine the wear sustained in the natural antagonist tooth in cases of full-coverage fixed-base prosthetic restorations or monolithic zirconia tooth-supported crowns, as well as to determine the wear in the restoration itself, both in the short- and medium-term and considering the factors that may influence wear. MATERIAL AND METHODS A systematic literature review and meta-analysis, based on Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) recommendations, of clinical studies that evaluated wear in antagonist teeth in relation to fixed-prosthesis monolithic zirconia crowns. A total of 5 databases were consulted in the literature search: Pubmed-Medline, Cochrane, Scopus, Embase and Web of Science (WOS). After eliminating duplicated articles and applying the inclusion criteria, eight articles were selected for the qualitative analysis and four for the quantitative analysis. RESULTS Mean maximum wear of the antagonist tooth in relation to monolithic zirconia crowns of magnitude 95.45 µm (CI at 95% 79.57-111.33) was observed. By using a meta-regression model (R2 = 0.92) the significant effect of time in maximum wear rate (p < 0.001) was observed, estimated at 6.13 µm per month (CI at 95% 3.99-8.27). Furthermore, monolithic zirconia crowns are subject to a mean maximum wear of 58.47 µm (CI 95% 45.44-71.50). By using a meta-regression model (R2 = 0.53) the significant effect of time in the maximum wear value was observed (p = 0.053), estimated at 3.40 µm per month (CI al 95% -0.05-6.85). CONCLUSIONS Monolithic zirconia crowns lead to a progressive maximum wear of the antagonist tooth over time which is greater than the maximum wear sustained in the crown itself. It is not possible to establish an objective and quantitative objection in relation to natural enamel wear or metal-ceramic crowns.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the influence of crown material (lithium-disilicate, 3Y-TZP zirconia) and abutment type (rigid implant, resin tooth with artificial periodontium) on wear performance of their antagonist teeth and adjacent teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS A mandibular left first molar (#36) with adjacent human teeth (mandibular left second premolar: #35, mandibular left second molar: #37) and antagonistic human teeth (maxillary left second premolar: #25, maxillary left first molar: #26, maxillary left second molar: #27) was prepared simulating a section of the jaw. Samples were made with extracted human molars (Reference), crowned implants (Implant), or crowned resin tooth analogues (Tooth). Crowns (tooth #36; n = 16/material) were milled from lithium-disilicate (Li, IPS e.max CAD) or 3Y-TZP zirconia (Zr, IPS e.max ZirCAD, both Ivoclar Vivadent). Thermal cycling and mechanical loading (TCML) in the chewing simulator were applied simulating 15 years of clinical service. Wear traces were analyzed (frequency [n], depth [µm]) and evaluated using scanning electron pictures. Wear results were compared by one-way-ANOVA and post-hoc-Bonferroni (α = 0.05). RESULTS After TCML, no visible wear traces were found on Zr. Li showed more wear traces (n = 30–31) than the reference (n = 21). Antagonistic teeth #26 showed more wear traces in contact to both ceramics (n = 27–29) than to the reference (n = 21). Strong wear traces (> 350 µm) on antagonists and their adjacent teeth were found only in crowned groups. Abutment type influenced number and depth of wear facets on the antagonistic and adjacent teeth. CONCLUSION The clinically relevant model with human antagonistic and adjacent teeth allowed for a limited comparison of the wear situation. The total number of wear traces and strong wear on crowns, antagonistic and adjacent teeth were influenced by crown material.
