Abstract
The aim of this study was to identify virulence and antimicrobial resistance profiles and determine the sequence type (ST) by multilocus sequence typing (MLST) of Salmonella enterica isolates from bovine carcasses from slaughterhouse located in Minas Gerais state, Brazil, and its relationship with bovine isolates obtained on the American continent based on sequence type profile. The MLST results were compared with all Salmonella STs associated with cattle on American continent, and a multi-locus sequence tree (MS tree) was built. Among the 17 S. enterica isolates, five ST profiles identified, and ST10 were the most frequent, grouping seven (41.2%) isolates. The isolates presented 11 different profiles of virulence genes, and six different antibiotics resistance profiles. The survey on Enterobase platform showed 333 Salmonella STs from American continent, grouped into four different clusters. Most of the isolates in the present study (13/17), were concentrated in a single cluster (L4) composed by 74 STs. As a conclusion, five different STs were identified, with ST10 being the most common. The isolates showed great diversity of virulence genes and antibiotics resistance profiles. Most of the isolates of this study were grouped into a single cluster composed by 74 STs formed by bovine isolates obtained on the American continent.

Abstract
Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Gram-negative bacteria initially induces liver inflammation with proinflammatory cytokines expressions. However, the underlying hepatoprotective mechanism of quercetin on LPS-induced hepatic inflammation remains unclear. Specific pathogen-free chicken embryos (n = 120) were allocated control vehicle, PBS with or without ethanol vehicle, LPS (125 ng/egg) with or without quercetin treatment (10, 20, or 40 nmol/egg, respectively), quercetin groups (10, 20, or 40 nmol/egg). Fifteen-day-old embryonated eggs were inoculated abovementioned solutions via the allantoic cavity. At embryonic d 19, the livers of the embryos were collected for histopathological examination, RNA extraction, real-time polymerase chain reaction, and immunohistochemistry investigation. We found that the liver presented inflammatory response (heterophils infiltration) after LPS induction. The LPS-induced mRNA expressions of inflammation-related factors (TLR4, TNFα, IL-1β, IL-10, IL-6, MYD88, NF-κB1, p38, and MMP3) were upregulated after LPS induction when compared with the PBS group, while quercetin could downregulate these expressions as compared with the LPS group. Quercetin significantly decreased the immunopositivity to TLR4 and MMP3 in the treatment group when compared with the LPS group. Quercetin could significantly downregulate the mRNA expressions of autophagy-related genes (ATG5, ATG7, Beclin-1, LC3A, and LC3B) and necroptosis-related genes (Fas, Bcl-2, Drp1, and RIPK1) after LPS induction. Quercetin significantly decreased the immunopositivity to LC3 in the treatment group when compared with the LPS group; meanwhile, quercetin significantly decreased the protein expressions of LC3-I, LC3-II, and the rate of LC3-II/LC3-I. In conclusions, quercetin can alleviate hepatic inflammation induced by LPS through modulating autophagy and necroptosis.

Abstract
Salmonella, especially antimicrobial resistant strains, remains one of the leading causes of foodborne bacterial disease. Retail chicken is a major source of human salmonellosis. Here, we investigated the prevalence, antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and genomic characteristics of Salmonella in 88 out of 360 (24.4%) chilled chicken carcasses, together with 86 Salmonella from humans with diarrhea in Qingdao, China in 2020. The most common serotypes were Enteritidis and Typhimurium (including the serotype I 4,[5],12:i:-) among Salmonella from both chicken and humans. The sequence types were consistent with serotypes, with ST11, ST34 and ST19 the most dominantly identified. Resistance to nalidixic acid, ampicillin, tetracycline and chloramphenicol were the top four detected in Salmonella from both chicken and human sources. High multi-drug resistance (MDR) and resistance to third-generation cephalosporins resistance were found in Salmonella from chicken (53.4%) and humans (75.6%). In total, 149 of 174 (85.6%) Salmonella isolates could be categorized into 60 known SNP clusters, with 8 SNP clusters detected in both sources. Furthermore, high prevalence of plasmid replicons and prophages were observed among the studied isolates. A total of 79 antimicrobial resistant genes (ARGs) were found, with aac(6')-Iaa, blaTEM-1B, tet(A), aph(6)-Id, aph(3″)-Ib, sul2, floR and qnrS1 being the dominant ARGs. Moreover, nine CTX-M-type ESBL genes and the genes blaNMD-1, mcr-1.1, and mcr-9.1 were detected. The high incidence of MDR Salmonella, especially possessing lots of mobile genetic elements (MGEs) in this study posed a severe risk to food safety and public health, highlighting the importance of improving food hygiene measures to reduce the contamination and transmission of this bacterium. Overall, it is essential to continue monitoring the Salmonella serotypes, implement the necessary prevention and strategic control plans, and conduct an epidemiological surveillance system based on whole-genome sequencing.

Abstract
This study reports the prevalence and antibiotics resistance status of Salmonella detected in raw meat from Lahore, Pakistan. Overall, N = 111 meat samples, were collected from local markets. Salmonella was recovered from 57 (51.35%) samples, including 45.83% of poultry, 60% of buffalo, 64.28% of cow, and 60% of goat meat samples. The predominant Salmonella strains were Salmonella enterica serovars; Typhimurium (45.4%), Typhi (27.2%), and Enteritidis (18.1%), identified by VITEK system and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The isolates exhibited high resistance to Erythromycin (100%), Cefepime (98.24%), Colistin (94.73%), Azithromycin (92.98%), Tetracycline (87.71%), Polymyxin B (84.21%), Ciprofloxacin (84.21%), Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole (80.70%), Nalidixic Acid (80.70%), Kanamycin (78.94%), Chloramphenicol (77.19%), Streptomycin (71.92%) and Ampicillin (64.91%). While the isolates exhibited more susceptibility to Meropenem (75.43%) and Amikacin (73.68%). N = 8 strains were designated as Multidrug Resistant (MDR) and N = 3 as Extensively Drug-Resistant (XDR) Salmonella. The PCR-based detection of resistance genes revealed the presence of blaTEM-1 gene (100%), catA1 gene (64%), and gyrA gene (18%). The whole genome sequencing (WGS) of two selected strains and subsequent downstream analysis confirmed the strains as MDR and XDR Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi. The study showed that raw meat consumed in Lahore carries a significantly high number of drug-resistant Salmonella.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The study aimed to characterize the quinolone resistance of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium and its monophasic variant (Salmonella enterica serovar 1,4,[5],12:i:-) isolated from food and patients in China. METHODS All of the isolates were assessed for quinolone susceptibility via the broth microdilution method. Then, the isolates were checked for mutations within quinolone resistance-determining regions of gyrA, gyrB, parC, and parE and were examined for plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance genes. RESULTS High rates of resistance to nalidixic acid in the S. Typhimurium (70.7%) and S. 1,4,[5],12:i:- (41.9%) isolates were observed, and a considerable proportion of isolates with reduced susceptibility to ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin were also detected. The high frequency of mutations in GyrA (60.8%) and a variety of genes (aac[6']-Ib-cr [23.2%], oqxAB [19.2%], qnrS [13.6%], and qnrA [3.2%]) conferring quinolone resistance in these Salmonella isolates were noteworthy. Lastly, the isolates carrying qnrS for transferability and transmission of the quinolone resistance were analysed by conjugation. Multiple locus variable-number tandem repeat analysis profiles indicated that some qnrS-positive isolates were clonally related, whilst the other isolates were genetically divergent. This suggested that both clonal spread of resistant strains and horizontal transmission of the plasmid-mediated resistance genes contributed to the dissemination of qnrS-positive Salmonella isolates. CONCLUSION This study highlights the prevalence of quinolone-resistant S. Typhimurium and S. 1,4,[5],12:i:- in China, posing a threat to public health.

Abstract
Salmonella is a major foodborne pathogen that poses a substantial risk to food safety and public health. This study aimed to assess the prevalence, antibiotic susceptibility, and genomic features of Salmonella isolates recovered from 600 retail meat samples (300 pork, 150 chicken and 150 beef) from August 2018 to October 2019 in Shaanxi, China. Overall, 40 (6.67 %) of 600 samples were positive to Salmonella, with the highest prevalence in chicken (21.33 %, 32/150), followed in pork (2.67 %, 8/300), while no Salmonella was detected in beef. A total of 10 serotypes and 11 sequence types (STs) were detected in 40 Salmonella isolates, with the most common being ST198 S. Kentucky (n = 15), ST13 S. Agona (n = 6), and ST17 S. Indiana (n = 5). Resistance was most commonly found to tetracycline (82.50 %), followed by to ampicillin (77.50 %), nalidixic acid (70.00 %), kanamycin (57.50 %), ceftriaxone (55.00 %), cefotaxime (52.50 %), cefoperazone (52.50 %), chloramphenicol (50.00 %), levofloxacin (57.50 %), cefotaxime (52.50 %), kanamycin (52.50 %), chloramphenicol (50.00 %), ciprofloxacin (50.00 %), and levofloxacin (50.00 %). All ST198 S. Kentucky isolates showed multi-drug resistance (MDR; ≥3 antimicrobial categories) pattern. Genomic analysis showed 56 distinct antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and 6 target gene mutations of quinolone resistance determining regions (QRDRs) in 40 Salmonella isolates, among which, the most prevalent ARG types were related to aminoglycosides and β-lactams resistance, and the most frequent mutation in QRDRs was GyrA (S83F) (47.5 %). The number of ARGs in Salmonella isolates showed a significant positive correlation with the numbers of insert sequences (ISs) and plasmid replicons. Taken together, our findings indicated retail chickens were seriously contaminated, while pork and beef are rarely contaminated by Salmonella. Antibiotic resistance determinants and genetic relationships of the isolates provide crucial data for food safety and public health safeguarding.

Cronobacter spp. are emerging foodborne pathogens that cause severe diseases. However, information on Cronobacter contamination in quick-frozen foods in China is limited. Therefore, we studied the prevalence, molecular characterization, and antimicrobial susceptibility of Cronobacter in 576 quick-frozen food samples collected from 39 cities in China. Cronobacter spp. were found in 18.75% (108/576) of the samples, and the contamination degree of the total positive samples was 5.82 MPN/g. The contamination level of frozen flour product samples was high (44.34%). Among 154 isolates, 109 were C. sakazakii, and the main serotype was C. sakazakii O1 (44/154). Additionally, 11 serotypes existed among four species. Eighty-five sequence types (STs), including 22 novel ones, were assigned, indicating a relatively high genetic diversity of the Cronobacter in this food type. Pathogenic ST148, ST7, and ST1 were the main STs in this study. ST4, epidemiologically related to neonatal meningitis, was also identified. All strains were sensitive to cefepime, tobramycin, ciprofloxacin, and imipenem, in which the resistance to cephalothin was the highest (64.94%).Two isolates exhibited multidrug resistance to five and seven antimicrobial agents, respectively. In conclusion, these findings suggest that the comparatively high contamination level of Cronobacter spp. in quick-frozen foods is a potential risk warranting public attention.

Abstract
Salmonella is a common chicken-borne pathogen that causes human infections. Data below the detection limit, referred to as left-censored data, are frequently encountered in the detection of pathogens. The approach of handling the censored data was regarded to affect the estimation accuracy of microbial concentration. In this study, a set of Salmonella contamination data was collected from chilled chicken samples using the most probable number (MPN) method, which consisted of 90.42% (217/240) non-detect values. Two simulated datasets with fixed censoring degrees of 73.60% and 90.00% were generated based on the real-sampling Salmonella dataset for comparison. Three methodologies were applied for handling left-censored data: (i) substitution with different alternatives, (ii) the distribution-based maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) method, and (iii) the multiple imputation (MI) method. For each dataset, the negative binomial (NB) distribution-based MLE and zero-modified NB distribution-based MLE were preferable for highly censored data and resulted in the least root mean square error (RMSE). Replacing the censored data with half the limit of quantification was the next best method. The mean concentration of Salmonella monitoring data estimated by the NB-MLE and zero-modified NB-MLE methods was 0.68 MPN/g. This study provided an available statistical method for handling bacterial highly left-censored data.

Abstract
The impact of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) extends beyond the farm-level to other stakeholders warranting the need for a collaborative approach to combat AMR while optimising production objectives and safeguarding human health. This study maps out the effect of AMR originating from poultry production in Senegal and highlights the entry points for interventions from stakeholders' perspectives. A causal loop diagram (CLD) was developed following a group model building procedure with 20 stakeholders and integrated with network analysis by translating the CLD into an unweighted directed network. Results indicate that with an eigenvector centrality of 1, 0.85, and 0.74, the production cost, on-farm profit, and on-farm productivity, respectively are the most ranked influential variables driving the complexity of AMR in the poultry production system. Two reinforcing feedback loops highlight the dual benefits of improving on-farm productivity and increasing on-farm profit. However, one balancing feedback loop that revolves around the causal link between producers' investment in qualified human resource personnel to ensure good farm management practices underline the financial implication of producers' investment decisions. The findings provide precursory groundings for the development of a quantitative SD model, the formulation of intervention scenarios and ex-ante impact assessment of the cost-effectiveness of the interventions.

Abstract
Salmonella is one of the most important zoonotic pathogens that can cause both acute and chronic illnesses in poultry flocks, and can also be transmitted to humans from infected poultry. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence, antimicrobial resistance, and molecular characteristics of Salmonella isolated from diseased and clinically healthy chickens in Anhui, China. In total, 108 Salmonella isolates (5.66%) were successfully recovered from chicken samples (n = 1908), including pathological tissue (57/408, 13.97%) and cloacal swabs (51/1500, 3.40%), and S. Enteritidis (43.52%), S. Typhimurium (23.15%), and S. Pullorum (10.19%) were the three most prevalent isolates. Salmonella isolates showed high rates of resistance to penicillin (61.11%), tetracyclines (47.22% to tetracycline and 45.37% to doxycycline), and sulfonamides (48.89%), and all isolates were susceptible to imipenem and polymyxin B. In total, 43.52% isolates were multidrug-resistant and had complex antimicrobial resistance patterns. The majority of isolates harbored cat1 (77.78%), blaTEM (61.11%), and blaCMY-2 (63.89%) genes, and the antimicrobial resistance genes in the isolates were significantly positively correlated with their corresponding resistance phenotype. Salmonella isolates carry high rates of virulence genes, with some of these reaching 100% (invA, mgtC, and stn). Fifty-seven isolates (52.78%) were biofilm-producing. The 108 isolates were classified into 12 sequence types (STs), whereby ST11 (43.51%) was the most prevalent, followed by ST19 (20.37%) and ST92 (13.89%). In conclusion, Salmonella infection in chicken flocks is still serious in Anhui Province, and not only causes disease in chickens but might also pose a threat to public health security.

Abstract
Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) can be transferred from environmental microbes to human pathogens, thus leading to bacterial infection treatment failures. The aquaculture polluted by over-used antibiotics is considered as a notorious reservoir of ARGs. However, the origin, diachronic changes, and mobility of ARGs under antibiotic exposure in aquaculture systems remain elusive. Our findings showed that enrofloxacin application also increased the relative abundance of various ARGs in addition to quinolone-resistance genes and induced ARG dissemination in crayfish gut and sediment bacteria. Further investigation indicated that the transposase-mediated recombination was the major driver of horizontal gene transfer (HGT) of ARGs under antibiotic stress. Notably, enrofloxacin application also induced the generation of some metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) carrying multiple ARGs, which were identified as novel species. Additionally, Enterobacteriaceae constituted a mobile ARG pool in aquaculture. Therefore, aquaculture provides potential wide environmental pathways for generation and spread of antibiotic resistance. Our findings of ARG temporal variations and dissemination pattern in aquaculture with artificial use of antibiotics are critical to the management of antibiotic resistance, which is of great ecosystem and health implications.

Abstract
Salmonella enterica is considered a significant threat to the global poultry industry and public health. In recent decades, antimicrobial resistance in Salmonella enterica has attracted increasing concern throughout the world. However, limited information is available on Salmonella enterica among different breeds of breeder chickens. Thus, this study aimed to compare the prevalence, serotype distribution, emergence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs), antimicrobial resistance, and genetic resistance mechanisms in Salmonella enterica among different breeds of breeder chickens. A total of 693 samples (dead embryos, cloacal swabs, water, feed, environmental swabs, and meconium of newly hatched chicks) were selected and cultured for Salmonella from four breeder chicken farms in Shandong province, China, representing one imported and three native breeds, and the isolates were further serotyped. Of the Salmonella isolates, susceptibility to 11 antimicrobials of 5 classes, ESBL screening, and the presence of 21 antimicrobial resistance genes were determined in the present study. Overall, 94 (13.6%) isolates were recovered, which were divided into 3 serotypes (Salmonella Pullorum (n = 36), Salmonella Thompson (n = 32), and Salmonella Enteritidis (n = 26)). The results showed that the prevalence of Salmonella enterica isolates from the imported breeds was higher compared with the three domestic breeds. Eight of the ninety-four isolates were ESBL-positive strains, which were recovered from a domestic breed chicken farm. These eight ESBL-producing isolates were serotyped to Pullorum. Surprisingly, Salmonella Enteritidis (S. enteritidis) and S. pullorum were simultaneously isolated from a single dead embryo observed among one native breed. Meanwhile, among the Salmonella isolates, 53.2% (50/94) were multidrug-resistant strains, and 44.7% (42/94) of the isolates presented resistance to at least five antibiotics. Nearly all of the isolates (97.9%, 92/94) were resistant to at least one antimicrobial; one isolate of S. Thompson was resistant to seven antimicrobial agents belonging to four different classes. The carriage rate of three resistance genes (tetA, tetB, and sul1) among isolates from the imported breeds (87%, 70%, and 65.2%) was higher than that in those from domestic breeds (35.2%, 36.6, and 14.1%). To our knowledge, this is the first report of ESBLs-producing Salmonella isolated from a Chinese native breed of breeder chickens. Our results also highlight that a high prevalence of multidrug-resistant Salmonella enterica contamination is widespread among different breeds of breeder chickens, which is a major risk of food-borne diseases and public health.

Abstract
Salmonella is an important zoonotic pathogen that not only endangers food safety and human health, but also causes considerable economic losses to the poultry industry. Therefore, it is essential to establish a rapid, sensitive, and specific diagnostic method for the early detection of Salmonella infection in poultry. In this study, we developed a novel enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for the detection of anti-Salmonella antibodies using a recombinant SifA protein. Amino acid sequence comparison revealed that SifA is a relatively conserved secretory protein across Salmonella serotypes. Therefore, we hypothesized that SifA can serve as a detection antigen for diagnostic testing. The SifA protein was expressed in Escherichia coli and used as a coating antigen to establish an SifA-ELISA. Control sera from specific-pathogen-free (SPF) chickens infected with Salmonella or several other non-Salmonella pathogens were then tested using the SifA-ELISA. Specificity testing demonstrated that the SifA-ELISA could detect antibodies against 3 different serotypes of Salmonella, whereas antibodies against other non-Salmonella pathogens could not be detected. Compared to the SifA-ELISA, the Salmonella plate agglutination test (PAT) failed to detect antibodies in serum samples from chickens infected with Salmonella Typhimurium. This result suggests that our SifA-ELISA may be better than PAT at detecting Salmonella infection. Comparing clinical sera, we observed a similar rate of Salmonella positivity between SifA-ELISA and PAT (92.6%). In addition, anti-SifA antibodies were continuously detected during Salmonella infection of SPF chickens, demonstrating that SifA-ELISA could consistently detect high levels of antibodies for at least 8 wk. Furthermore, the intra-assay and interassay coefficients of variation (CV) of the SifA-ELISA were below 10%, which is considered acceptable. In summary, the SifA-ELISA established here is a promising and reliable method for detection of anti-Salmonella antibodies in poultry and may contribute to the early diagnosis of Salmonella infection.

Abstract
Introduction Salmonella is a ubiquitous foodborne pathogen and mainly transmitted to human farm-to-fork chain through contaminated foods of animal origin. Methods In this study, we investigated the serotypes, antimicrobial resistance and virulence of Salmonella from China. Results A total of 617 Salmonella isolates were collected from 4 major food animal species across 23 provi nces in China from 2015-2021. Highest Salmonella prevalence were observed in Guangdong (44.4%) and Sandong (23.7%). Chickens (43.0%) was shown to be the major source of Salmonella contamination, followed by pigs (34.5%) and ducks (18.5%). The number of Salmonella increased significantly from 5.51% to 27.23% during 2015-2020. S. Derby (17.3%), S. Enteritidis (13.1%) and S. Typhimurium (11.4%) were the most common serotypes among 41 serotypes identifiedin this study. Antibiotic susceptibility testing showing that the majority of the Salmonella isolates were resistant to neomycin (99.7%), tetracycline (98.1%), ampicillin (97.4%), sulfadiazine/trimethoprim (97.1%), nalidixic acid (89.1%), doxycycline (83.1%), ceftria xone (70.3%), spectinomycin (67.7%), florfenicol (60.0%), cefotaxime (52.0%) and lomefloxacin (59.8%). The rates of resistance to multiple antibiotics in S. Derby and S.Typhimurium were higher than that in S. Enteritidis. However, the rate of resistance to fosfomycin were observed from higher to lower by S. Derby, S. Enteritidis, and S. Typhimurium. Biofilm formation ability analysis found that 88.49%of the Salmonella were able to produce biofilms, of which 236 Salmonella isolates were strong biofilm producer. Among the 26 types of antibiotics resistance genes (ARGs) were identified in this study, 4 ARGs (tetB,sul2,aadA2, and aph(3')-IIa) were highly prevalent. In addition, 5 β-lactam resistance genes (bla TEM, bla SHV, bla CMY-2, bla CTX-M, and bla OXA) and 7 quinolone resistance genes (oqxA, oqxB, qnrB, qnrC, qnrD, qnrS, and qeqA) were detected among these isolates. 12 out of 17 virulence genes selected in this study were commonly presented in the chromosomes of tested isolate, with a detection rate of over 80%, including misL, spiA, stn, pagC, iroN, fim, msgA, sopB, prgH, sitC, ttrC, spaN. Discussion This study provided a systematical updating on surveillance on prevalence of Salmonella from food animals in China, shedding the light on continued vigilance for Salmonella in food animals.

Abstract
Economic losses and market constraints caused by bacterial diseases such as colibacillosis due to avian pathogenic Escherichia coli and necrotic enteritis due to Clostridium perfringens remain major problems for poultry producers, despite substantial efforts in prevention and control. Antibiotics have been used not only for the treatment and prevention of such diseases, but also for growth promotion. Consequently, these practices have been linked to the selection and spread of antimicrobial resistant bacteria which constitute a significant global threat to humans, animals, and the environment. To break down the antimicrobial resistance (AMR), poultry producers are restricting the antimicrobial use (AMU) while adopting the antibiotic-free (ABF) and organic production practices to satisfy consumers' demands. However, it is not well understood how ABF and organic poultry production practices influence AMR profiles in the poultry gut microbiome. Various Gram-negative (Salmonella enterica serovars, Campylobacter jejuni/coli, E. coli) and Gram-positive (Enterococcus spp., Staphylococcus spp. and C. perfringens) bacteria harboring multiple AMR determinants have been reported in poultry including organically- and ABF-raised chickens. In this review, we discussed major poultry production systems (conventional, ABF and organic) and their impacts on AMR in some potential pathogenic Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria which could allow identifying issues and opportunities to develop efficient and safe production practices in controlling pathogens.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Salmonella as an important food-borne zoonotic bacterial pathogen, infection in ducks is a recessive infection, however, it can also cause high mortality and threat to food safety. Preventing and controlling the infection and transmission of Salmonella in ducks critically require rapid and sensitive detection method. Full-length Salmonella-specific protein PagN was induced and expressed in E.coil BL21 and was purified as an antigen to establish an indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (iELSA) detection kit. RESULTS The recombinant PagN protein has a molecular weight of 43 kDa containing a His-tag, was recognized by an anti-Salmonella positive serum by Western blot assay. The optimal concentration of PagN as a coating antigen in the iELISA was 1 μg/mL, and the optimal dilution of enzyme-labeled secondary antibody was 1:4000 (0.025 μg/mL). The cutoff OD450 value was established at 0.268. The iELISA kit showed high selectivity since no cross-reaction with E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus was observed. iELISA method and Dot-blot test were performed on 100 clinical sera samples collected from duck farms, and the actual coincidence rate was 89% (89/100). 613 duck serum samples from 3 different farms were tested using established method and commercial ELISA kit. The concordance between the two methods was 94.1%. CONCLUSION Anti-PagN based iELISA can serve as a useful tool for diagnosis of Salmonella infection.

Abstract
A prevalent bacterial intestinal infection with severe economic damage is salmonellosis. Our study was carried out to diagnose Salmonella from chickens and calves, to determine its resistance to antimicrobials' phenotypic and genotypic characterization of integrons and β lactamase genes in the multidrug resistance of different Salmonella serotypes, and to detect the genetic relationship between Salmonella isolates collected from different origins using an ERIC PCR. In total, 200 samples from diseased chicken and diarrheic calves were obtained from 50 various farms from Kafr El-sheikh, Egypt. Salmonella poultry isolates were characterized as S. Typhimurium (3/8), S. Enteritidis (3/8), and S. Kentucky (2/8), but Salmonella isolates from cattle were S. Enteritidis (1/2) and S. Kentucky (1/2). When antibiotic susceptibility testing was completed on all of the isolates, it showed that there was multidrug resistance present (MDR). A PCR was applied for identifying the accompanying class 1 integrons and ESBLs from MDR Salmonella isolates (two isolates of S. Kentucky were divided as one from calf and one from poultry). Our results detected blaTEM and class 1 integron, but were negative for bla IMP, bla VIM, and bla SHV. An ERIC PCR was conducted for understanding the clonal relation between various β-lactamase-producing MDR Salmonella isolates. The same four previously mentioned isolates were also tested. The two isolates of S. Enteritidis isolated from poultry and calves had 100% similarity despite indicating that there were interactions between broilers and calves living on the same farm that caused infection from the same Salmonella strains, while the other two isolates of S. Kentucky showed only 33% serovarities.

Abstract
Multidrug-resistant (MDR) mesophilic facultatively anaerobic Gram-negative rods are a public health issue and their spread from animal-source foods to humans is of concern worldwide. Hence, the aim of this study was to examine the antibiotic susceptibility patterns and physiological aspects of such rods, including their tolerance to toxic metals and the screening of efflux pumps expressing isolates among enterobacteria isolated from meat (chicken, beef and pork) and fish samples acquired from retail establishments in a Brazilian urban Centre of over 2,300,000 inhabitants. The study revealed that 62.9% of isolated bacteria were resistant to at least one antimicrobial, of which 32.3% and 8.1% were resistant to one and two of the tested drugs, respectively. A resistance of up to six antimicrobials was also observed (0.9%). Out of the total amount, 22.7% were classified as MDR. Chicken was the meat that harbored most MDR isolates, and fish harbored the least. It was not possible to distinguish the different types of meat or fish considering the resistance patterns. The MDR isolates showed a higher tolerance to mercury and cadmium salts and the increased activity of the efflux mechanisms compared to other susceptible or resistant strains. In One Health. the perspective occurrence of putative MDR bacteria in fresh meat and fish draws attention to the antimicrobial resistance phenomenon in an open environment.

Abstract
The study aimed to determine the effects of orally supplemental zinc on body weight, Salmonella invasion, serum IgA, intestinal histomorphology, and immune response of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. typhimurium)-challenged young pigeons. A total of 72 healthy White King pigeons (25 days old) with similar weight were randomly assigned to 3 treatments with six replicate cages. The 3 treatments were unchallenged, S. typhimurium-challenged, and S. typhimurium-challenged orally supplemented with 1 mg zinc per bird. Salmonella infection decreased (P < 0.05) the body weight, the bursa index, the serum IgA content, and the villus height/crypt depth ratio in the ileum, but increased the neutrophil proportion (P < 0.001) and the mRNA expressions of IL-1β and IL-8 in the jejunum (P < 0.05). Orally supplemental zinc reduced (P = 0.007) the bacterial load in the liver and improved (P < 0.05) the body weight, the bursa index, the serum IgA content, the villus height/crypt depth ratio, and the NOD-like receptor family pyrin domain containing 3 (NLRP3) protein expression, as well as tended to increase (P = 0.064) the protein abundance of caspase-1 of the jejunum, but did not alleviate the high level of neutrophil proportion and IL-1β mRNA expression of the jejunum (P > 0.05). The results indicated that oral zinc supplementation improved the intestinal mucosal morphology and enhanced the immune response, as well as activated caspase-1-dependent cell pyroptosis pathways in the jejunal epithelium, thereby restricting Salmonella invasion of the challenged young pigeons.

Abstract
Salmonella enterica is a widespread foodborne pathogen with concerning antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Waterfowl are a major source of Salmonella transmission, but there are few systematic studies on Salmonella prevalence in waterfowl species. In this study, 126 Salmonella isolates (65 collected in 2018–2020 and 61 collected in 2002–2005) were obtained from waterfowl samples in Sichuan, China. Their serotypes, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) types, and phenotypic and genotypic AMR profiles were systematically examined. The isolates were distributed in 7 serotypes, including serovars Enteritidis (46.0%), Potsdam (27.8%), Montevideo (7.9%), Cerro (6.3%), Typhimurium (4.8%), Kottbus (4.0%) and Apeyeme (3.2%). Their PFGE characteristics were diverse; all isolates were distributed in four groups (cutoff value: 60.0%) and 20 clusters (cutoff value: 80.0%). Moreover, all isolates were multidrug resistant, and high rates of AMR to lincomycin (100.0%), rifampicin (100.0%), sulfadiazine (93.7%), erythromycin (89.7%), ciprofloxacin (81.0%), and gentamicin (75.4%) were observed. Finally, 49 isolates were subjected to whole-genome sequencing, and a wide variety of AMR genes were found, including multiple efflux pump genes and specific resistance genes. Interestingly, the tet(A)/tet(B) and catII resistance genes were detected in only isolates obtained in the first collection period, while the gyrA (S83F, D87N and D87G) and gyrB (E466D) mutations were detected at higher frequencies in the isolates obtained in the second collection period, supporting the findings that isolates from different periods exhibited different patterns of resistance to tetracycline, chloramphenicol and nalidixic acid. In addition, various incompatible plasmid replicon fragments were detected, including Col440I, Col440II, IncFIB, IncFII, IncX1, IncX9, IncI1-I and IncI2, which may contribute to the horizontal transmission of AMR genes and provide competitive advantages. In summary, we demonstrated that the Salmonella isolates prevalent in Sichuan waterfowl farms exhibited diverse serotypes, multiple AMR phenotypes and genotypes, and AMR changes over time, indicating their potential risks to public health.

Abstract
Salmonella is one of the most common agents of foodborne illness. The genus Salmonella includes two species (Salmonella bongori and S. enterica) and six subspecies (enterica I, salamae II, arizonae IIIa, diarizonae IIIb, houtenae IV, and indica VI), each of which contains multiple serotypes associated with animal and human infections. The aim of the study was to evaluate the presence of Salmonella spp. in carcasses of food-producing animals and foods in southern Italy and the serovar distribution among different sources. From 2011 to 2021, a total of 12,246 foods and 982 samples from animal carcasses were collected and analyzed. The overall percentage of positive samples was 5.84% (N = 773) and a significant increase in prevalence was observed by comparing the years 2011–2015 (257, 3.27%) and 2016–2021 (516, 9.61%; p < 0.05). The highest percentage of positive food samples was observed in “Meat and Meat Products” (N = 327/2,438, 13.41%) followed by “Fish and fishery products” (N = 115/1,915, 6.01%). In carcasses, the highest percentage of positive samples was reported from broilers (N = 42/81, 51.85%) followed by buffalo (N = 50/101, 49.50%) and pork (N = 140/380, 36.84%). After typing, the isolates were assigned to the species S. enterica and to the subspecies: enterica (N = 760, 98.32%), diarizonae (N = 8, 1.03%), salamae (N = 3, 0.39%) and houtenae (N = 2, 0.26%). S. Infantis was the most frequently detected (N = 177, 24.76%), followed by S. Derby (N = 77, 10.77%), monophasic S. Typhimurium (N = 63, 8.81%), S. Typhimurium (N = 54, 7.55%), and S. Rissen (N = 47, 6.57%). By comparing the sampling period 2011–2015 with that of 2016–2021, an increase in the prevalence of S. Infantis and monophasic S. Typhimurium and a decrease of S. Typhimurium were recorded (p < 0.05). Thus, present data suggest that, despite the implementation of national and European control strategies to protect against Salmonella, the prevalence of this pathogen in southern Italy is still increasing and a change of national control programs to protect against Salmonella are necessary.

Abstract
Salmonella is a momentously zoonotic and food-borne pathogen that seriously threats human and animal health around the world. Salmonella pathogenicity is closely related to its virulence genes profile. However, conventional virulence gene analysis methods cannot truly reveal whole virulence genes carried by Salmonella. In this study, whole genome sequencing in combination with Virulence Factor Database were applied to investigate whole virulence gene profiles of 243 Salmonella isolates from animals and humans in China from 2004 to 2019. The results showed that a total of 670 virulence genes were identified in Salmonella, among them, 319 virulence genes were found in all the Salmonella tested isolates, and 9 virulence genes were unique to Salmonella. The 670 virulence genes were classified into 14 categories according to their functions, and the genes related to adherence, effector delivery system, immune modulation, motility and nutritional/metabolic factors accounted for 84.63%. Relationships between virulence genes and serovars, sequence types indicated that strains belonged to the same serovar or sequence type had similar virulence genes profiles, however, isolates from different sources, years and locations of isolation had variable virulence gene profiles. In addition, copy number of virulence genes and homologous virulence genes shared with other pathogens were also analyzed in this study. In summary, we investigated pan-genomic virulence gene profiles and molecular epidemiology of Salmonella isolates from humans and animals in China from 2004 to 2019. These findings are beneficial for pathogenic monitoring, investigation of virulence evolution as well as prevention and control of Salmonella.

Abstract
Multidrug-resistant Salmonella spp. is one of the leading causes of worldwide foodborne disease outbreaks. Animal-derived foods, particularly chicken and poultry products, are the most likely source of Salmonella transmission to humans. The increasing demand for chicken meat has raised a global food safety issue. This review aims to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella spp. in chickens from various countries in Asia. The methods for detecting Salmonella will also be discussed in this review. The prevalence of Salmonella spp. in chicken and poultry products is lower in developed countries than in developing countries. In addition, the incidence of Salmonella spp. in chicken and poultry products from fresh markets is higher than those from supermarkets. Furthermore, this review also reported the presence of multidrug-resistant Salmonella strains in various Asian countries. Rapid Salmonella detection based on immunological assays, molecular-based assays, and biosensors can provide more accurate results with high sensitivity and specificity. These methods also require a shorter time than the cultural-based Salmonella detection method. The use of suitable detection methods to determine the presence of Salmonella spp. in chicken and poultry products is important to ensure food safety.

Phylogenomic Analysis of Salmonella enterica Serovar Indiana ST17, an Emerging Multidrug-Resistant Clone in China. Microbiol Spectr 2022; 10:e0011522. Abstract
Salmonella enterica serovar Indiana (S. Indiana) is an extremely expanded foodborne pathogen in China in recent years. This study aimed to elucidate the national prevalence and phylogenomic characterization of this pathogen in China. Among 5, 287 serotyped Salmonella isolates collected during 2002 to 2018, 466 S. Indiana isolates were found in 15 provinces, and 407 were identified to be ST17, and the rest were ST2040. Among 407 ST17 isolates, 372 (91.4%) were multidrug resistant, and 366 (89.9%) were resistant to ciprofloxacin, 235 (57.7%) were further resistant to ceftriaxone. Phylogenomic analysis revealed that ST17 isolates were classified into four clades (I, II, III and IV), which appeared in international clonal dissemination. ST17 isolates from China fell into Clade IV with part of isolates from the United Kingdom, the United States, South Korea, and Thailand, suggesting their close genetic relationship. Mutations in quinolone resistance-determining regions (QRDR) of GyrA and ParC, and plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance (PMQR) genes aac(6′)-Ib-cr, oqxAB, and qnrS as well as extended spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) genes blaCTX-M, blaOXA, and blaTEM in isolates from Clade IV were much higher than those from other three clades. Various blaCTX-M subtypes (blaCTX-M-65, blaCTX-M-55, blaCTX-M-27, blaCTX-M-14, and blaCTX-M-123) with ISEcp1, IS903B, ISVsa5, and IS1R were found in ST17 isolates, especially Tn1721 containing ΔISEcp1-blaCTX-M-27-IS903B in P1-like bacteriophage plasmids. These findings on the prevalent and genomic characterization for the S. Indiana multidrug-resistant ST17 clone in China, which have not been reported yet, provide valuable insights into the potential risk of this high-resistant clone. IMPORTANCE Fluoroquinolones and cephalosporins are the primary choices for severe salmonellosis treatment. S. Indiana has become one of the most prevalent serovars in breeding poultry and poultry meats in China in recent years. ST17 was recognized as the leading epidemiological importance in S. Indiana because of its high-level resistance to the most of common antibiotics, including ciprofloxacin and ceftriaxone. However, the prevalence and phylogenomic characterization of ST17 isolates are unclear. Here, we did a retrospective screening on a large scale for S. Indiana in China, and performed its phylogenomic analysis. It was found that ST17 isolates had extensive spread in 15 provinces of China and became a multidrug-resistant clone. The international spread of the ST17 isolates was observed among several countries, especially China, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Our study emphasized the importance of surveillance of a high-resistant S. Indiana ST17 clone to combat its threat to public health.

Abstract
ABSTRACT The objective of the present study was to analyze the prevalence of Salmonella in multiple food commodities in the People's Republic of China by performing a meta-analysis. Accordingly, we screened studies that examined the prevalence of Salmonella in PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science databases. Methodological quality assessment and heterogeneity analyses were performed for included studies. The prevalence rate with the 95% confidence interval (CI) was selected as the effect size. Subgroup analyses for each food type were conducted and then stratified by regions, food chain processing points, and seasons. In total, 49 studies were included in the meta-analysis, among them, 8 (16.3%) studies were deemed "high risk," 13 (26.5%) studies were "unclear risk," and 28 (57.2%) studies were "low risk." The overall prevalence rate of Salmonella was 20.0% (95% CI: 15.9 to 24.4). The prevalence rate of Salmonella in raw meat products was 23.6% (95% CI: 19.8 to 27.6), which was higher than that in aquatic products, 13.7% (95% CI: 3.1 to 29.9), milk products, 0.9% (95% CI: 0.0 to 3.9), frozen convenience foods, 6.5% (95% CI: 4.4 to 8.9), ready-to-eat foods, 2.0% (95% CI: 1.1 to 3.2), vegetables and fruits, 0.9% (95% CI: 0.0 to 5.2), and shell eggs, 4.2% (95% CI: 3.0 to 5.7). Subgroup analyses revealed that prevalence rates of Salmonella in raw meat products from abattoirs, 26.3% (95% CI: 17.4 to 36.3) and retail stores, 30.0% (95% CI: 24.6 to 35.8) were higher than those determined from farms, 10.2% (95% CI: 7.0 to 13.9); P < 0.05); however, no significant difference was observed in the prevalence of Salmonella stratified by different geographical regions or seasons (P > 0.05). On the basis of these findings, high levels of Salmonella contamination could be detected in raw meat products in China, and the prevalence rate of Salmonella in raw meat products from abattoirs and retail stores was high. Abstract
Salmonella enterica serovars Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) can survive extreme food processing environments including bactericidal sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) treatments generally recognized as safe. In order to reveal the molecular regulatory mechanisms underlying the phenotypes, the overall regulation of genes at the transcription level in S. Enteritidis after NaClO stimulation were investigated by RNA-sequencing. We identified 1399 differentially expressed genes (DEG) of S. Enteritidis strain CVCC 1806 following treatment in liquid culture with 100 mg/L NaClO for 20 min (915 upregulated and 484 downregulated). NaClO stress affects the transcription of genes related to a range of important biomolecular processes such as membrane damage, membrane transport function, energy metabolism, oxidative stress, DNA repair, and other important processes in Salmonella enterica. First, NaClO affects the structural stability of cell membranes, which induces the expression of a range of outer and inner membrane proteins. This may lead to changes in cell membrane permeability, accelerating the frequency of DNA conversion and contributing to the production of drug-resistant bacteria. In addition, the expression of exocytosis pump genes (emrB, yceE, ydhE, and ydhC) was able to expel NaClO from the cell, thereby increasing bacterial tolerance to NaClO. Secondly, downregulation of genes related to the Kdp-ATPase transporter system (kdpABC) and the amino acid transporter system (aroP, brnQ and livF) may to some extent reduce active transport by bacterial cells, thereby reducing their own metabolism and the entry of disinfectants. Downregulation of genes related to the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle may drive bacterial cells into a viable but non-culturable (VBNC) state, resisting NaClO attack by reducing energy metabolism. In addition, significant upregulation of genes related to oxidative stress could mitigate damage caused by disinfectants by eliminating alkyl hydroperoxides, while upregulation of genes related to DNA repair could repair damage to bacterial cells caused by oxidative stress. Therefore, this study indicated that S. Enteritidis has genomic mechanisms to adapt to NaClO stress.

Abstract
Salmonella enterica is a zoonotic food-borne pathogen threatening public health around the world. As is the case with many other pathogens, the spread of mobilized colistin resistance (mcr) alleles is of grave concern. In this study, totally 689 clinical Salmonella isolates were collected from a local hospital in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, China between 2009 and 2018. Resistance genes were screen by PCR. Two mcr-9-positive Salmonella strains S15 and S639 were identified which belong to serotype Typhimurium and Thompson, respectively. We observed that both mcr-9 genes were located on conjugative IncHI2 plasmids which encoded numerous resistance genes, likely facilitating the dissemination of mcr-9 by co-resistance mechanisms. The mcr-9 cassettes encoded on the two plasmids were not identical: downstream of the mcr-9 genes, we found IS1 on one plasmid (pS15), while the other had a WbuC-IS26 (pS639). Despite the presence of mcr-9 cassettes, the strains were not rendered colistin resistant. Yet, it is of epidemiological importance to implement surveillance to be able to observe and possibly control the spread of mcr-9 due to its potential to mediate resistance to the last-resort antibiotic colistin.

Abstract
Salmonellosis is a zoonosis of major relevance to global public health. Here we present the assessment of Salmonella enterica contamination in pork and poultry meat sold at retail markets in São Paulo, Brazil. A total of 780 meat samples (386 poultry meat and 394 pork samples) were collected from 132 markets. From these, 57 samples (7.3%) were positive for S. enterica isolation, including 32 (8.3%) poultry meat and 25 (6.3%) pork samples. S. enterica isolates were further characterized for serotyping, antimicrobial resistance and genotyping by amplified fragment length polymorphism and pulsed field gel electrophoresis. Antimicrobial resistance analysis demonstrated two main profiles: pork isolates were more resistant to macrolides, β-lactams, tetracycline, phenicols, and fluoroquinolones, and poultry meat isolates presented higher resistance to fluoroquinolones, sulfonamides, tetracycline, and β-lactams. A total of 72.4% of poultry meat isolates were identified as S. Heidelberg, while most of pork isolates were S. Typhimurium (31.7%) and S. Give (16.7%). Genotyping resulted in most clusters consisting exclusively of pork or poultry meat, no cross-contamination was detected, and a tendency to differentiate isolates according to their serotypes and markets of origin. High resistance rates to critically important antimicrobials reinforce the importance of controlling Salmonella contamination in meat production chains.

Abstract
Chlorine disinfectants have been widely used in the poultry supply chain but this exposure can also result in the development of bacterial tolerance to chlorine and this is often linked to antibiotic cross-resistance. The objectives of this study were to investigate sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) tolerance of Salmonella isolated from poultry supply chains and evaluate cross-resistance. We collected 172 Salmonella isolates from poultry farms, slaughter houses and retail markets in China during 2019–2020. We found that S. Enteritidis, S. Kentucky, and S. Typhimurium constituted > 80% of our Salmonella isolates. Overall, 68% of Salmonella isolates were resistant to > 3 antibiotics and S. Kentucky displayed a significantly (p > 0.05) higher frequency (93.2%) of multidrug resistance than the other serovars. Tolerance to chlorine at MIC > 256 mg/L was detected in 93.6% of isolates (161/172) and tolerant isolates displayed higher decimal reduction times (D value) and less ultrastructural damage than did the suspectable strains under chlorine stress. Spearman analysis indicated significant positive correlations between chlorine tolerance (evaluated by the OD method) and antibiotic resistance (p < 0.05) to ceftiofur, tetracycline, ciprofloxacin and florfenicol and this was most likely due to efflux pump over-expression. The most frequently detected chlorine resistance gene was qacEΔ1 (83.1%, n = 143) and we found a positive correlation between its presence and MIC levels (r = 0.66, p < 0.0001). Besides, we found weak correlations between chlorine-tolerance and antibiotic resistance genes. Our study indicated that chlorine disinfectants most likely played an important role in the emergence of chlorine tolerance and spread of antibiotic resistance and therefore does not completely control the risk of food-borne disease. The issue of disinfectant resistance should be examined in more detail at the level of the poultry production chain.

Abstract
The epidemiological characteristics of Salmonella spp. in pork have been widely studied in China, but the results remain inconsistent. This study aimed to summarize the epidemiological characteristics of Salmonella spp. isolated from pork, including its prevalence, serovar distribution, and antibiotic resistance rate. We systematically reviewed published studies on Salmonella spp. isolated from pork in China between 2000 and 2020 in two Chinese and three English databases and quantitatively summarized its prevalence, serovar distribution, and antibiotic resistance using meta-analysis methods. Furthermore, we conducted subgroup analysis and meta-regression to explore the source of the heterogeneity from historical changes and regional difference perspectives. Ninety-one eligible studies published between 2000 and 2020 were included. The meta-analysis showed that the pooled prevalence of Salmonella isolated from pork was 0.17 (95% CI: 0.14, 0.20), with a detected growing trend over time. For the proportions of serovars, Derby (0.32, 95% CI: 0.26, 0.38), Typhimurium (0.10, 95% CI: 0.07, 0.15) and London (0.05, 95% CI: 0.03, 0.08) were dominant in these studies. The antibiotic resistance rates were high for tetracycline (0.68, 95% CI: 0.59, 0.77), sulfisoxazole (0.65, 95% CI: 0.45, 0.83), ampicillin (0.43, 95% CI: 0.34, 0.53), streptomycin (0.42, 95% CI: 0.29, 0.56), and sulfamethoxazole (0.42, 95% CI: 0.25, 0.60). The results of this study revealed a high prevalence, the regional characteristics of serovar distribution, and the severe challenges of antibiotic resistance of Salmonella originating from pork in China, suggesting the potential increasing risk and disease burden. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the prevention and control strategies of Salmonella in pork.

Abstract
ABSTRACT This study was conducted to characterize the distribution of Salmonella isolates in a poultry processing facility and to identify their antibiotic resistance profiles. Salmonella enterica was detected in 146 samples (66.7%), and 125 isolates were identified as Salmonella Heidelberg (n = 123), Salmonella Abony (n = 1), and Salmonella O:4,5 (n = 1). Salmonella Heidelberg isolates were subjected to XbaI macrorestriction analysis and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. The 66 pulsotypes obtained were grouped into four major clusters, indicating cross-contamination and persistence of this serotype in the processing facility. Selected S. enterica isolates were characterized by their antibiotic resistance, and most (n = 122, 97.6%) were multidrug resistant. Resistance to third-generation cephalosporins ceftazidime (84 isolates, 67.2%) and cefotaxime and ceftriaxone (91 isolates, 72.8%) was particularly prevalent. Production of extended-spectrum β-lactamases (ESBL) was identified in 24 isolates (19.2%), and ESBL-producing isolates were resistant to at least eight antibiotics. This study revealed the high prevalence of Salmonella Heidelberg in the poultry chain, providing insight into the ecology of this pathogen in this facility. The high prevalence of multidrug-resistant S. enterica is a concern due to the potential consequences for public health. HIGHLIGHTS

Abstract
Foodborne disease caused by Salmonella is an important public health concern worldwide. Animal-based food, especially poultry meat, is the main source of human salmonellosis. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and epidemiology of Salmonella contamination in raw poultry meat commercialized in China. Following the principle of systematic review, 98 sets of prevalence data were extracted from 74 publications conducted in 21 Chinese provincial regions. The random-effect model was constructed for subgrouping analysis by meat category, preservation type, and geographical location. The prevalence levels differed from high to low among raw poultry meat, including chicken, 26.4% (95% CI: 22.4-30.8%); pigeon, 22.6% (95% CI: 18.2-27.8%); duck, 10.1% (95% CI: 5.3-18.2%); and other poultry meat, 15.4% (95% CI: 12.0-19.5%). Prevalence data on the preservation type revealed that chilled poultry meat might be more likely to experience cross-contamination than non-chilled poultry meat in China. The distribution map of Salmonella for raw poultry meat showed that a higher prevalence level was found in the Shaanxi, Henan, Sichuan, and Beijing regions. All subgroups possessed high amounts of heterogeneity (I2 > 75%). The scientific data regarding the differences in prevalence levels between meat category, preservation method, and geographical region sources might be useful to improve specific interventions to effectively control the incidence of Salmonella in poultry meat.

Abstract
Salmonella continues to be a major food and public health burden worldwide that can threaten human health via eating contaminated meats, particularly those originating from chicken. In this study, the antimicrobial resistance profiles, epidemiological characteristics of resistance genes, and pulsed field gel electrophoresis (PFGE-XbaI) typing of 120 non-Pullorum/Gallinarum Salmonella isolates recovered from chicken embryos in Henan province were determined. The antimicrobial resistant phenotypes and evaluation of the extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs) producing strains of Salmonella were investigated by the Kirby-Bauer test and the double-disk synergy test. Additionally, 37 antimicrobial resistance genes encoding resistance to five different categories, including aminoglycosides, cephalosporins, sulphonamides, tetracyclines, and β-lactams, were examined by conventional PCR. However, genotyping analysis was conducted by macro-restriction using enzyme XbaI followed by the separation of the restricted DNA fragments by PFGE. The results of this study showed that the studied Salmonella strains were highly resistant to ampicillin (66.67%) and sulfisoxazole (66.67%), while they were all susceptible to meropenem, imipenem, colistin, and chloramphenicol. Additionally, 67.5% (81/120) of the studied strains were multidrug resistant, and 21.67% (26/120) were phenotypically confirmed as ESBLs positive. The statistical analysis showed that resistance depends on the serovars, and ESBLs positive strains showed more multi-resistance than ESBLs negative strains (p < 0.05). The genotypic antimicrobial resistance showed the detection of 14 among the 37 tested genes, and the concordance between genotypic and phenotypic antimicrobial resistance ranged from 0% to 100% depending on the serovars. However, the PFGE-XbaI typing results showed that the examined Salmonella strains were divided into 22 individual subtypes and were grouped in nine clusters, with similarity values ranging from 64.7% to 100%. From this study, we can conclude that the antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella serovars isolated from chicken embryos in Henan province was alarming, with rigorous multidrug resistance, which requires the urgent mitigation of the use of antimicrobial drugs in chicken hatcheries. Additionally, our results showed evidence of the presence of different PFGE patterns among the studied Salmonella serovars, suggesting the presence of different sources of contamination.

Abstract
To disclose the antimicrobial susceptibility and wide adaptability of commonly occurring genotypes of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium, the antimicrobial resistance and multilocus sequence typing (MLST) profiles of 196 Salmonella Typhimurium isolates (136 from food-producing animals, 19 from environments, 15 from markets, and 26 from humans) in China between 2007 and 2019 were analyzed. Tests of susceptibility to 19 antimicrobial agents using the broth microdilution method showed that 84.7% of the isolates were resistant to at least one antimicrobial. Antimicrobial susceptibility analysis demonstrated that 66.8% of the isolates were multidrug-resistant (MDR) strains, with resistance to three or more antimicrobials. The highest antidrug resistance was to ampicillin, amoxicillin/clavulanic acid, and tetracycline. Three MLST types were detected, and sequence type (ST) 19 was the most common ST. However, ST34 was associated with a higher MDR rate and more complex MDR patterns, than ST19 and ST99, although the exact mechanism has not been reported. Our study highlights the variation of drug resistance and STs from different sources and the association between STs and drug resistance, providing useful information for epidemiological research and developing a public health strategy.

Abstract
Salmonella is considered one of the major foodborne pathogens associated with severe infections. Little attempt has been focused on the distribution of Salmonella in retail meats and the analysis of its phenotypic characteristics in Anhui Province. The aim of this study was to characterize the prevalence of Salmonella serovars, antimicrobial susceptibility, antimicrobial resistance genes, and virulence genes in Salmonella recovered from retail meats in Anhui, China. Out of the 120 samples collected from supermarket chains and open-air markets, 16 samples (13.3%) were positive for Salmonella, of which Salmonella enterica serovars Enteritidis and Typhimurium were the common serotypes. Significant differences in incidence were found between supermarket chains and open-air markets (p < 0.05). Overall, all 16 isolates were resistant to at least two tested antimicrobials, while 12 isolates showed multiple antimicrobial resistant phenotypes. High resistance was observed for ampicillin (87.5%), doxycycline (75.0%), and tetracycline (62.5%). The sul2 was detected in all isolates, and the aac(6')-Ib-cr (93.8%) and the tetA (81.3%) were predominant in 10 resistance genes conferring five classes of antimicrobials. In addition, the correlation between resistance phenotypes and genes of tetracyclines and aminoglycosides was more than 80%. Interestingly, all the Salmonella isolates contained the genes mogA, mgtC, sopB, and spvB, whereas the siiE was variably represented. The findings in this study showed high prevalence, antimicrobial resistance, and the existence of virulence genes, suggesting that effective measures are required to ensure microbial safety from retail meats.

Abstract
Salmonella spp. is recognized as an important zoonotic pathogen. The emergence of antimicrobial resistance in Salmonella enterica poses a great public health concern worldwide. While the knowledge on the incidence and the characterization of different S. enterica serovars causing chick embryo death remains obscure in China. In this study, we obtained 45 S. enterica isolates from 2,139 dead chick embryo samples collected from 28 breeding chicken hatcheries in Henan province. The antimicrobial susceptibility assay was performed by the broth microdilution method and the results showed that 31/45 (68.8%) isolates were multidrug-resistant (≥3 antimicrobial classes). Besides the highest resistance rate was observed in the aminoglycoside class, all the isolates were susceptible to chloramphenicol, azithromycin, and imipenem. Furthermore, genomic characterization revealed that S. Enteritidis (33.33%; 15/45) was a frequent serovar that harbored a higher number of virulence factors compared to other serovars. Importantly, genes encoding β-lactamases were identified in three serovars (Thompson, Enteritidis, and Kottbus), whereas plasmid-mediated quinolone resistance genes (qnrB4) were detected in certain isolates of S. Thompson and the two S. Kottbus isolates. All the examined isolates harbored the typical virulence factors from Salmonella pathogenicity islands 1 and 2 (SPI-1 and SPI-2). Additionally, a correlation analysis between the antimicrobial resistance genes, phenotype, and plasmids was conducted among Salmonella isolates. It showed strong positive correlations (r < 0.6) between the different antimicrobial-resistant genes belonging to certain antimicrobial classes. Besides, IncF plasmid showed a strong negative correlation (r > −0.6) with IncHI2 and IncHI2A plasmids. Together, our study demonstrated antimicrobial-resistant S. enterica circulating in breeding chicken hatcheries in Henan province, highlighting the advanced approach, by using genomic characterization and statistical analysis, in conducting the routine monitoring of the emerging antimicrobial-resistant pathogens. Our findings also proposed that the day-old breeder chicks trading could be one of the potential pathways for the dissemination of multidrug-resistant S. enterica serovars.

Abstract
The accurate and rapid classification of Salmonella serovars is an essential focus for the identification of isolates involved in disease in humans and animals. The purpose of current research was to identify novel sensitive and reliable serovar-specific targets and to develop PCR method for Salmonella C2 serogroups (O:8 epitopes) in food samples to facilitate timely treatment. A total of 575 genomic sequences of 16 target serovars belonging to serogroup C2 and 150 genomic sequences of non-target serovars were analysed by pan-genome analysis. As a result, four and three specific genes were found for serovars Albany and Hadar, respectively. Primer sets for PCR targeting these serovar-specific genes were designed and evaluated based on their specificity; the results showed high specificity (100%). The sensitivity of the specific PCR was 2.8 × 101–103 CFU/mL and 2.3 × 103–104 CFU/mL for serovars Albany and Hadar, respectively, and the detection limits were 1.04 × 103–104 CFU/g and 1.16 × 104–105 CFU/g in artificially contaminated raw pork samples. Furthermore, the potential functions of these serovar-specific genes were analysed; all of the genes were functionally unknown, except for one specific serovar Albany gene known to be a encoded secreted protein and one specific gene for serovars Hadar and Albany that is a encoded membrane protein. Thus, these findings demonstrate that pan-genome analysis is a precious method for mining new high-quality serovar-targets for PCR assays or other molecular methods that are highly sensitive and can be used for rapid detection of Salmonella serovars.
