Abstract
Evidence on the effects of green and blue spaces on childhood cardiometabolic health is inconsistent and mostly cross-sectional. We assessed the associations of green and blue spaces exposure at birth 4, 7, and 10 years (to identify vulnerable periods of exposure) and as longitudinal trajectories (to identify the longitudinal effect over time) with cardiometabolic outcomes at 10 years. Among 4669 participants from a population-based birth cohort, we assessed the residential normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and distance to urban green and blue spaces at each time point using geographic information systems and standardized by dividing the observed value by the standard deviation. Longitudinal exposure trajectories were derived using latent class mixed models. At 10 years, we measured body mass index, fat mass index, android-to-gynoid fat ratio, blood pressure, and metabolic outcomes. We defined overweight/obesity (World Health Organization), high blood pressure (American Academy of Pediatrics), and metabolic syndrome (IDEFICS). No significant associations were observed between natural spaces exposure and adiposity outcomes. We found an inverse association between distance to nearest blue space at birth and systolic blood pressure z-scores, and a positive association between distance to nearest green space at 7 and 10 years and metabolic syndrome score (p < 0.05). Children in the descending NDVI500m trajectory, compared to those in the high stable trajectory, showed lower diastolic blood pressure z-scores and metabolic syndrome scores (p < 0.05). However, after multiple testing corrections, all associations lost statistical significance. This study did not find robust associations between natural spaces during key developmental periods and cardiometabolic health.

Abstract
The growing global incidence of immune-mediated and inflammatory diseases (IMIDs) is worrisome, with evidence suggesting that environmental factors, notably urbanization and the reduction of green spaces, may act as potential instigators. However, conflicting findings in studies necessitate a closer examination of recent research (January 2020 - February 2024) to elucidate the factors contributing to these inconsistencies. This review explores study protocols to avoid erroneously endorsing the null hypothesis of no association between green space coverage and IMID risks. A literature search adhering to PRISMA-ScR guidelines yielded 46 relevant papers from Google Scolar and Pub Meb. The studies varied in design, with 17 being longitudinal, 24 cross-sectional, and five focusing on longitudinal parent-offspring connections. Geographic scope differed, with 21 multi-location and 25 single-location studies. Participant numbers ranged from 144 to 982,131 across diverse demographics. Additionally, some studies examined disease frequencies in large groups (several million people) residing in specific regions. Green space metrics encompassed NDVI, land cover data, plant biodiversity, and novel indexes, measured within 7.5-5000 m diameter buffers around residences or schools. The review advises against making definitive statements regarding the relationship between urban green spaces and the prevalence of IMIDs. It suggests that inconsistencies in study results may stem from variations in study designs and methodologies, as well as the complex, interacting mechanisms through which green spaces affect immune health. Future research recommendations include larger cohorts, early-life exposure data, and testing specific hypotheses related to vegetation types and participants' genetic predispositions.

Abstract
Food allergy is a significant concern for the health of humans worldwide. In addition to dietary exposure of food allergens, genetic and environmental factors also play an important role in the development of food allergy. However, only the tip of the iceberg of risk factors in food allergy has been identified. The importance of food allergy caused by orally exposed risk factors and constituents, including veterinary drugs, pesticides, processed foods/derivatives, nanoparticles, microplastics, pathogens, toxins, food additives, dietary intake of salt/sugar/total fat, vitamin D, and therapeutic drugs, are highlighted and discussed in this review. Moreover, the epithelial barrier hypothesis, which is closely associated with the occurrence of food allergy, is also introduced. Additionally, several orally exposed risk factors and constituents that have been reported to disrupt the epithelial barrier are elucidated. Finally, the possible mechanisms and key immune cells of orally exposed risk factors and constituents in aggravating food allergy are overviewed. Further work should be conducted to define the specific mechanism by which these risk factors and constituents are driving food allergy, which will be of central importance to the targeted therapy of food allergy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With the rapid escalation of global urbanization, the role of blue-green spaces in urban ecology, public health, and planning has become increasingly prominent. Although their contributions to ecological preservation, public health, and urban design are widely acknowledged, research into public engagement and willingness to participate in the management and planning of these spaces is still in its early stages. OBJECTIVE This study aims to identify key factors influencing public willingness to participate in blue-green space management, focusing specifically on people's perceptions of blue-green spaces (including perceived quality and accessibility), their usage behaviors (i.e., frequency of usage of blue-green spaces), and their self-assessed physical and mental health. METHODS We interviewed local residents through random sampling to obtain sample data, and used a representative sample (n = 815, 510 women; 305 men, age 18-85 years, lived in Chengdu for an extensive time) of residents living in Chengdu City, China. Employing a quantitative approach, we examined the relationships between factors such as gender, regular occupation, income, behavior, and health status in relation to the willingness to participate. Additionally, we explored how perceptions and behaviors impacted health statuses and, consequently, inclinations to participate. RESULTS The findings indicate that individuals with steady occupations and higher incomes are more inclined to engage in the management and planning of blue-green spaces. Notably, men exhibited a greater tendency to participate than women. Furthermore, access to blue-green spaces emerged as a crucial mechanism for addressing health disparities, offering significant implications for urban planning and public health. CONCLUSION Successful blue-green space planning and understanding of willingness to participate necessitates the holistic consideration of people's perceptions of blue-green spaces, their usage behaviour and their self-rate health. For a tangible impact on health equity and global urban development, it's essential to prioritize blue-green spaces in planning, especially in lower-income regions. This not only promotes environmental perception but can also be a strategic approach to address health disparities. Our findings offer vital insights for tailoring international urban planning and management practices towards these goals.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW In this review, we detail the exposome (consisting of environmental factors such as diet, microbial colonization, allergens, pollutants, and stressors), mechanistic and clinical research supporting its influence on atopic disease, and potentiation from climate change. We highlight contemporary environmental interventions and available evidence substantiating their roles in atopic disease prevention, from observational cohorts to randomized controlled trials, when available. RECENT FINDINGS Early introduction to allergenic foods is an effective primary prevention strategy to reduce food allergy. Diverse dietary intake also appears to be a promising strategy for allergic disease prevention, but additional study is necessary. Air pollution and tobacco smoke are highly associated with allergic disease, among other medical comorbidities, paving the way for campaigns and legislation to reduce these exposures. There is no clear evidence that oral vitamin D supplementation, prebiotic or probiotic supplementation, daily emollient application, and antiviral prophylaxis are effective in preventing atopic disease, but these interventions require further study. While some environmental interventions have a well-defined role in the prevention of atopic disease, additional study of many remaining interventions is necessary to enhance our understanding of their role in disease prevention. Alignment of research findings from randomized controlled trials with public policy is essential to develop meaningful public health outcomes and prevent allergic disease on the population level.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The characteristics of allergic sensitization profiles can differ between populations and geographic regions, contributing differently to the association with allergic diseases. Consequently, the sensitization trajectories found in previous studies conducted in Northern Europe may not apply in Southern European countries. OBJECTIVE To identify trajectories of allergic sensitization profiles during childhood and evaluate the association with allergic outcomes, using data from a Portuguese birth cohort. METHODS A random sample from Generation XXI was screened for allergic sensitization at 10 years of age. Among 452 allergic sensitized children, 186 were tested with ImmunoCAP™ ISAC multiplex array that detects 112 molecular components, at three follow-ups (4, 7, and 10 years old). Information on allergic outcomes (asthma, rhinitis, atopic dermatitis) was obtained at the 13-year-old follow-up. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify clusters of participants with similar sensitization profiles. Then, sensitization trajectories were defined based on the most prevalent transitions between clusters over time. Logistic regression was applied to estimate the association between sensitization trajectories and allergic diseases. RESULTS Five trajectories were proposed: "no/few sensitizations," "early persistent house dust mites (HDM)," "early HDM and persistent/late grass pollen," "late grass pollen," and "late HDM." The "early HDM and persistent/late grass pollen" trajectory was associated with rhinitis and "early persistent HDM" with asthma and rhinitis. CONCLUSION Distinct sensitization trajectories pose different risks in the development of allergic diseases. These trajectories present some differences from those in Northern European countries and are important for planning adequate prevention health plans.

Abstract
Environmental justice is the concept that all people have the right to live in a healthy environment, to be protected against environmental hazards, and to participate in decisions affecting their communities. Communities of color and low-income populations live, work, and play in environments with disproportionate exposure to hazards associated with allergic disease. This unequal distribution of hazards has contributed to health disparities and is largely the result of systemic racism that promotes segregation of neighborhoods, disinvestment in predominantly racial/ethnic minority neighborhoods, and discriminatory housing, employment, and lending practices. The AAAAI Environmental Exposure and Respiratory Health Committee and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee jointly developed this report to improve allergy/immunology specialists' awareness of environmental injustice, its roots in systemic racism, and its impact on health disparities in allergic disease. We present evidence supporting the relationship between exposure to environmental hazards, particularly at the neighborhood level, and the disproportionately high incidence and poor outcomes from allergic diseases in marginalized populations. Achieving environmental justice requires investment in at-risk communities to increase access to safe housing, clean air and water, employment opportunities, education, nutrition, and health care. Through policies that promote environmental justice, we can achieve greater health equity in allergic disease.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exposure to natural environments may affect respiratory health. This study examined the association of exposure to green and blue spaces with lung function in children, and assessed the mediation effect of air pollution and physical activity. METHODS The study used data from the Generation XXI, a population-based birth cohort from the Porto Metropolitan Area (Portugal). Residential Normalised Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) at different buffers (100, 250 and 500 m), the accessibility to urban green spaces (UGS) within 400 and 800 m and the minimum distance to the nearest UGS and to the nearest blue spaces were assessed at birth, 4, 7 and 10 years of age. Three life-course measures were calculated: averaged exposure, early-life exposure (birth) and exposure trend over time (change in exposure). Forced vital capacity (FVC), forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and forced expiratory flow between 25% and 75% of FVC (FEF25-75%) at 10 years were used as outcomes. To assess associations, linear regression models and path analysis were used. RESULTS This study included 3278 children. The adjusted models showed that increasing the NDVI exposure over time within 100 m of the child's residence was associated with higher values of FEV1 (L) and FEF25-75% (L·s-1) (β 0.01, 95% CI 0.0002-0.03 and β 0.02, 95% CI 0.001-0.05, respectively). No significant associations were observed for the remaining measures of exposure, and no mediation effect was found for pollution or physical activity. CONCLUSION Increasing exposure to greenness at close proximity from residences was associated with improved lung function. While the mechanism remains unknown, this study brings evidence that city greening may improve children's respiratory health.

Abstract
Pollen allergies have been on the rise in cities, where anthropogenic disturbances, warmer climate and introduced species are shaping novel urban ecosystems. Yet, the allergenic potential of these urban ecosystems, in particular spontaneous vegetation outside parks and gardens, remains poorly known. We quantified the allergenic properties of 56 dry grasslands along a double gradient of urbanisation and plant invasion in Berlin (Germany). 30% of grassland species were classified as allergenic, most of them being natives. Urbanisation was associated with an increase in abundance and diversity of pollen allergens, mainly driven by an increase in allergenic non-native plants. While not inherently more allergenic than native plants, the pool of non-natives contributed a larger biochemical diversity of allergens and flowered later than natives, creating a broader potential spectrum of allergy. Managing novel risks to urban public health will involve not only targeted action on allergenic non-natives, but also policies at the habitat scale favouring plant community assembly of a diverse, low-allergenicity vegetation. Similar approaches could be easily replicated in other cities to provide a broad quantification and mapping of urban allergy risks and drivers.

Abstract
Elderly citizens are concentrated in urban areas and are particularly affected by the immediate residential environment. Cities are unequal and segregated places, where there is an intensification of urban change processes such as gentrification and displacement. We aimed to understand how neighbourhood socioeconomic processes and dynamics influence older people's health. Three bibliographic databases-PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus-were used to identify evidence of the influence of neighbourhood socioeconomic deprivation, socio-spatial segregation, urban renewal, and gentrification on healthy ageing. We followed the method of Arksey and O'Malley, Levac and colleagues, the Joanna Briggs Institute, and the PRISMA-ScR. The included studies (n = 122) were published between 2001 and 2021. Most evaluated neighbourhood deprivation (n = 114), followed by gentrification (n = 5), segregation (n = 2), and urban renewal (n = 1). Overall, older people living in deprived neighbourhoods had worse healthy ageing outcomes than their counterparts living in more advantaged neighbourhoods. Older adults pointed out more negative comments than positive ones for gentrification and urban renewal. As to segregation, the direction of the association was not entirely clear. In conclusion, the literature has not extensively analysed the effects of segregation, gentrification, and urban renewal on healthy ageing, and more quantitative and longitudinal studies should be conducted to draw better inferences.

Abstract
There is increasing understanding, globally, that climate change and increased pollution will have a profound and mostly harmful effect on human health. This review brings together international experts to describe both the direct (such as heat waves) and indirect (such as vector-borne disease incidence) health impacts of climate change. These impacts vary depending on vulnerability (i.e., existing diseases) and the international, economic, political, and environmental context. This unique review also expands on these issues to address a third category of potential longer-term impacts on global health: famine, population dislocation, and environmental justice and education. This scholarly resource explores these issues fully, linking them to global health in urban and rural settings in developed and developing countries. The review finishes with a practical discussion of action that health professionals around the world in our field can yet take.

Abstract
Land use mix (LUM) in the neighbourhoods has been associated with healthier lifestyles. However, less is known about the association between LUM and health outcomes, namely during childhood. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between different LUM indexes for Porto Metropolitan Area and asthma and respiratory symptoms in children. A cross-sectional analysis was performed involving 6260 children enrolled in Generation XXI. Land use around the child's residence was assessed with the Portuguese official map of land cover using a GIS. Generalized linear mixed-effects models were fitted to estimate the association between LUM and respiratory symptoms and asthma at 7 years of age. Adjusted associations were quantified using odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI). After adjustment, LUM was associated with a lower odds of wheezing in the last 12 months [OR (95% CI) = 0.37 (0.15; 0.93) using Shannon's Evenness Index within 500 m; and OR = 0.93 (0.89; 0.98) using the number of different land use types within 250 m]. Living in neighbourhoods with high LUM has a protective effect on current wheezing symptoms. Our results highlight the association between LUM and respiratory symptoms among children, suggesting that public health considerations should be incorporated in land use decision-making.

Abstract
Green and blue spaces have numerous health benefits. It has been hypothesized that contact with these spaces can have an important role in cognitive development, because it provides children with unique stimuli that can help develop curiosity, creativity, awareness, and control. This study aimed to estimate the association between exposure to green and blue spaces and the various measures of intelligence quotient (IQ) among children from Porto Metropolitan Area (Portugal). This investigation used data from the Generation XXI birth cohort. Exposure was assessed by Geographic Information Systems using vegetation indexes and measures of accessibility to urban green spaces and blue spaces in the surroundings of the residence and school, measured at 0, 4, 7 and 10 years. The outcome was the verbal, performance, and global IQ, measured using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-III), administered at age 10. Associations were estimated using crude and adjusted multilevel models. The mediation role of air pollution and physical activity was quantified. This study included 3827 children. The adjusted models showed that having green spaces up to 800 m of the residence was positively associated with performance IQ (1.30 95%CI [0.26; 2.35]) and global IQ (1.27 [0.18; 2.36]). No clear associations were observed regarding accessibility to blue spaces. Physical activity appeared to have a minor mediation role. Children with urban green spaces around their residences had higher performance and global IQ. Local actors in the sectors of public health and urban planning should promote the creation of green spaces close to residential areas.

Abstract
Urban blue-green spaces provide us abundant social, environmental, and economic benefits, but the disparities often exist in their distribution and accessibility. Traditionally urban blue-green spaces are a consolidation of “blue-green infrastructure” within urban areas. Several urban features like parks, forests, gardens, visible water, such as parks, rivers, canals, reservoirs, ponds, lakes, fountains, etc. are categorized or considered under the blue-green spaces and these are very much crucial for various urban ecosystem services. These play a significant role for all stakeholders of the urban community. Thus, everyone must ensure the equitable number of blue-green spaces for all. Recently, several rules and regulations towards the safeguarding of urban blue-green spaces have been outlined. The work presents a methodological framework to develop an approach towards sustainable urban growth with the help of urban blue-green spaces assessments. The current work has attempted to examine the linkage between issues of the urban blue-green spaces for restoring the required infrastructures. It can be utilised for all sustainable urban development for urban planning and design projects to play a pivotal role. The work emphasizes more to develop a methodological framework to analyze the urban blue-green spaces for augmentation with a theoretical framework. It is expected that the advancement of a problem cum objectives-driven approach will help to design an impact-driven approach for planned and concrete action.

Abstract
Limitations of Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) potentially contributed to the inconsistent findings of greenspace exposure and childhood asthma. The aim of this study was to use a novel greenness exposure assessment method, capable of overcoming the limitation of NDVI to determine the extent to which it was associated with asthma prevalence in Chinese children. During 2009-2013, a cross-sectional study of 59,754 children aged 2-17 years was conducted in northeast China. Tencent street view images surrounding participants' schools were segmented by a deep learning model, and streetscape greenness was extracted. The green view index (GVI) was used to assign exposure and higher value indicates more green coverage. Mixed-effects logistic regression models were used to calculate the adjusted odds of asthma per interquartile range (IQR) increase of GVI for trees and grass. Participants were further stratified to investigate whether particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter <2.5 μm (PM2.5) was a modifier. An IQR increase in GVI800m for trees was associated with lower adjusted odds of doctor-diagnosed asthma (OR: 0.76; 95%CI: 0.72-0.80) and current asthma (OR: 0.82; 95%CI: 0.75-0.89). An IQR increase in GVI800m for grass was associated with higher adjusted odds of doctor-diagnosed asthma (OR: 1.04; 95%CI: 1.00-1.08) and current asthma (OR: 1.08; 95%CI: 1.02-1.14). After stratification by PM2.5 exposure level, the negative association between trees and asthma, and the positive association between grass and asthma were observed only in low PM2.5 exposure levels (≤median: 56.23 μg/m3). Our results suggest that types of vegetation may play a role in the association between greenness exposure and childhood asthma. Exposure to trees may reduce the odds of childhood asthma, whereas exposure to grass may increase the odds. Additionally, PM2.5 may modify the associations of trees and grass with childhood asthma.

Abstract
CONTEXT Daily outdoor play is encouraged by the American Academy of Pediatrics. Existing evidence is unclear on the independent effect of nature exposures on child health. OBJECTIVE We systematically evaluated evidence regarding the relationship between nature contact and children's health. DATA SOURCES The database search was conducted by using PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, PsychInfo, ERIC, Scopus, and Web of Science in February 2021. STUDY SELECTION We followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. In all searches, the first element included nature terms; the second included child health outcome terms. DATA EXTRACTION Of the 10 940 studies identified, 296 were included. Study quality and risk of bias were assessed. RESULTS The strongest evidence for type of nature exposure was residential green space studies (n = 147, 50%). The strongest evidence for the beneficial health effects of nature was for physical activity (n = 108, 32%) and cognitive, behavioral, or mental health (n = 85, 25%). Physical activity was objectively measured in 55% of studies, and 41% of the cognitive, behavioral, or mental health studies were experimental in design. LIMITATIONS Types of nature exposures and health outcomes and behaviors were heterogenous. Risk of selection bias was moderate to high for all studies. Most studies were cross-sectional (n = 204, 69%), limiting our ability to assess causality. CONCLUSIONS Current literature supports a positive relationship between nature contact and children's health, especially for physical activity and mental health, both public health priorities. The evidence supports pediatricians in advocating for equitable nature contact for children in places where they live, play, and learn.

Abstract
The direct/indirect responsibility of the gut microbiome in disease induction in and outside the digestive tract is well studied. These results are usually from the overpopulation of certain species on the cost of others, interaction with beneficial microflora, interference with normal epigenetic control mechanisms, or suppression of the immune system. Consequently, it is theoretically possible to cure such disorders by rebalancing the microbiome inside our bodies. This can be achieved by changing the lifestyle pattern and diet or by supplementation with beneficial bacteria or their metabolites. Various approaches have been explored to manipulate the normal microbial inhabitants, including nutraceutical, supplementations with prebiotics, probiotics, postbiotics, synbiotics, and antibiotics, or through microbiome transplantation (fecal, skin, or vaginal microbiome transplantation). In the present review, the interaction between the microbiome and epigenetics and their role in disease induction is discussed. Possible future therapeutic approaches via the reestablishment of equilibrium in our internal micro-ecosystem are also highlighted.

Abstract
Environmental factors play an important role in obesity-related behaviors. Evidence indicates significant associations between weight and urban green spaces in adults, but it is not clear whether this relationship applies to adolescents. Therefore, our aim was to determine the associations between urban green spaces, greenness exposure and species richness in residential environments with physical activity and body mass index. Sixty-two adolescents between 12 and 18 years of age answered a self-administered questionnaire, providing information on height, weight, age, sex and home address. Data on socioeconomic deprivation were obtained from the European Index of Deprivation for Small Portuguese Areas. Physical activity levels were assessed using accelerometers. Urban green space counts and the normalized difference vegetation index values were measured using buffers along the roads with distances of 300, 500, 1000 and 1500 m from each participant's residence. To quantify the species richness, the species richness index was used. Linear regression models were fitted to analyze whether urban green spaces, exposure to green spaces and species richness counts for each distance were associated with physical activity and self-reported body mass index. We did not find significant associations between the independent variables and the probability of overweight or obesity. The relationship between environmental variables, adolescents' physical activity and body weight seems to be complex and further studies may contribute to better understanding of the topic.
