Abstract
Recent evidence highlights the potential impact of outdoor artificial light at night (ALAN) on sleep, and later sleep timing may be a risk factor for executive dysfunction. Depression is commonly associated with executive dysfunction, which significantly compromise prognosis. However, it remains unclear whether sleep-wake phase mediate the effects of outdoor ALAN on executive function. We assessed whether sleep timing mediated the association between outdoor ALAN and executive function among depressed patients. Between 2017 and 2023, 798 inpatients with depression were enrolled from the Fourth People's Hospital of Hefei. The outdoor ALAN exposure of patients was estimated using satellite images. All participants were assessed for sleep conditions using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and for executive function using the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function-Adult Version (BRIEF-A). We employed multifactor linear regression models to investigate the association between outdoor ALAN exposure and executive function, adjusted for potential confounders. Additionally, mediation models were utilized to explore the mediating role of sleep timing in this association. Our study found that greater ALAN exposure was significantly associated with higher executive function scores. The exposure of participants at 12 months prior to enrollment had the greatest effect, for each interquartile range (IQR 29.93 nW/cm2/sr) increase in outdoor ALAN exposure, the Global Executive Composite (GEC) scores increased by 6.12 (95 % confidence interval [CI]: 2.49, 9.74). Mediation analysis indicated that sleep midpoint significantly mediated the relationship between outdoor ALAN and executive function, with a mediated proportion of 22.39 %. The study suggested that outdoor ALAN exposure has adverse effects on executive function in depressed patients, and sleep-wake phase may mediate the association between outdoor ALAN exposure and executive function.

Abstract
There is increasing evidence that air pollutants significantly increase the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Nevertheless, less research has been conducted to date to reveal protective factors. Therefore, this study aims to indicate whether a healthy lifestyle can modify the effects of environmental pollution on CVD. This study screened 3010 participants from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) Wave 3 (2015). The study aimed to systematically demonstrate the impact of environmental pollution on CVD and elucidate the role of a healthy lifestyle. Air pollutant data were obtained from the China High Air Pollutant (CHAP) datasets. We analyzed the relationship between these pollutants and cardiovascular disease risk using generalized linear mixed models. In addition, healthy lifestyles were categorized as low, medium, and high; stratified analyses were conducted to estimate the effect of healthy lifestyles on the risk of CVD due to air pollutants. 607 had CVD among 3010 participants, and the three-year mean concentrations of the pollutants chloride ion (Cl-), nitrate ion (NO3-), particulate matter with a diameter of 10 micrometers or less (PM10), particulate matter with a diameter of 10 micrometers or less (PM1), particulate matter with a diameter of 10 micrometers or less (PM2.5) were each linked 1.37 (95%CI:1.22,1.54), 1.03 (95%CI:1.00,1.06), 1.02 (95%CI:1.01,1.03), 1.01 (95%CI:1.00,1.01), and 1.01 (95%CI:1.00,1.01) fold risk of CVD, respectively. For the subgroups of low, medium, and high according to the healthy lifestyle score in model 2, the average concentration of Cl- pollutant was each associated with 1.34 (1.12,1.62), 1.34 (1.12,1.61), and 1.32 (1.03,1.71) times risk with CVD, respectively. The NO3 - was each associated with 1.06 (1.02,1.11), 1.01 (0.97,1.05), and 0.98 (0.93,1.04) times risk with CVD, respectively. The PM1 was each associated with 1.03 (1.01,1.05), 1.01 (0.99,1.02), and 1.00 (0.97,1.02) times risk with CVD, respectively. The PM10 was each associated with 1.01 (1.00,1.01), 1.01 (0.99,1.01), and 1.00 (0.99,1.01) times risk with CVD, respectively. PM2.5 was each associated with 1.02 (1.01,1.03), 1.00 (0.99,1.01), and 1.00 (0.99,1.01) times risk with CVD, respectively. Exposure to these pollutants(Cl-, NO3-, PM10, PM1, PM2.5)is associated with higher risk of CVD, and healthier lifestyles can reduce the risk of CVD due to overall air pollutants.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is growing evidence that exposure to particulate matter (PM) is associated with impaired cognitive function. However, limited studies have specifically examined the relationship between PM exposure and domain-specific cognitive function. METHODS This study involved 2,668 female participants from the Lifestyle and Healthy Aging of Chinese Square Dancer Study. Global cognitive function was assessed using a composite Z-score derived from four tests: the Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT), Verbal Fluency Test (VFT), Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST), and Trail Making Test-B (TMT-B). These tests evaluated specific cognitive subdomains: memory (AVLT), language (VFT), attention (DSST), and executive function (TMT-B). PM concentrations were estimated using a Random Forest (RF) model, which calculated the average concentrations over 1-year and 3-year periods at a high grid resolution of 1 × 1 km. Mixed linear regression was employed to explore the association between PM exposure and cognitive function. RESULTS After adjusting for basic socio-demographic factors, a 10 mg/m3 increase in 3-year exposure to PM10 was significantly associated with a decrease in the DSST score by -0.05 (95% confidence interval [CI]: -0.11, 0) and an increase in the TMT-B score by 0.05 (95% CI: 0.01, 0.1). When further adjusting for gaseous pollutants (SO₂, NO₂, and O₃), even stronger associations were observed between 3-year exposure to either PM2.5 or PM10 and performance in both global cognition and specific cognitive subdomains. Specifically, in the DSST subdomain, a 10 µg/m³ increase in 1-year PM10 exposure was associated with a decrease in the score by -0.10 (95% CI: -0.15, -0.04). Age-stratified analyses further indicated that older participants were consistently more vulnerable to PM exposure. Notably, 3-year exposure to both PM2.5 and PM10 was linked to declines in DSST scores across both middle-aged and older age groups. CONCLUSION Ambient PM exposure was significantly associated with performance in global cognitive function and specific cognitive domains among Chinese females. Female populations over 65 years old were more susceptible to the adverse effects of PM2.5 and PM10. Among the four subdomains, the DSST showed the strongest association with PM exposure, even at earlier ages, suggesting that impaired attention may serve as an early warning sign of cognitive decline. Abstract
OBJECTIVES In the aging population, sarcopenia has become a major concern due to its association with increased risks of disability, including impairments in both activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL). This relationship, however, has been rarely studied within the Chinese population. This study was conducted to assess the relationships of sarcopenia status and its components with the risk of developing ADL/IADL disability among Chinese community-dwelling elderly people. METHODS In this study, we used data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. The ADL and IADL scales were used to assess an individual's functional disability. Logistic regression models were used to assess the association between sarcopenia status and its components and the risk of developing ADL/IADL disability in the overall population. Sex-specific receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves was used to evaluate the value of sarcopenia component indicators for predicting ADL/IADL disability. RESULTS A total of 4,893 participants were included in the study, comprising 2,220 males and 2,673 females, with ages ranging from 60 to 102 years. There were greater IADL disability risks in the possible sarcopenia group (OR = 1.87, 95% CI: 1.48-2.37), sarcopenia group (OR = 1.85, 95% CI: 1.24-2.76) and severe sarcopenia group (OR = 2.54, 95% CI: 1.63-3.94). The results were similar (possible sarcopenia: OR = 2.16, 95% CI: 1.44-3.22; severe sarcopenia: OR = 4.99, 95% CI: 2.52-9.87)) for ADL disability, except for the sarcopenia group (OR = 2.00, 95% CI: 0.97-4.12). We found that handgrip strength (HS) (OR = 0.95, 95% CI: 0.92-0.97) and gait speed (GS) (OR = 0.33, 95% CI: 0.12-0.86) were negatively associated with the risk of developing ADL disability and that the repeated chair stand (RCS) test results (OR = 1.09, 95% CI: 1.05-1.12) were positively associated with the risk of developing ADL disability. Similar results were found for the associations between several sarcopenia component indicators and the risk of developing IADL disability. The area under the curve (AUC) of HS was 0.702, which could better recognize ADL disability and showed good discriminant validity in males. CONCLUSION The prevalence of sarcopenia is high among the elderly Chinese population. Additionally, HS showed good discriminant validity for discriminating ADL disability in males. Further prospective studies are needed to clarify the relationship between sarcopenia status and the risk of developing functional disability and to determine whether indicators of the separate sarcopenia components can be used for early warning, screening and identifying functional disability.

Abstract
Background China has the largest elderly population globally; the growth rate of the aged tendency of the population was higher than that of Western countries. Given the distinctions in historical, ethnic, and economic status as well as socio-cultural background, Chinese adults had different sleep patterns compared with adults in other countries. Considering the heavy disease burden caused by activities of daily living (ADL) disability, we conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) to test the hypothesis that individuals with short and longer sleep duration are more likely to have ADL disability. Objective ADL disability is a common condition affecting the quality of life among older people. This study aimed to explore the associations between sleep duration and ADL disability among middle-aged and older adults in China. Methods This cross-sectional study used data from 17,607 participants from the 2018 CHARLS (from 2018 to 2020), an ongoing representative survey of adults aged 45 years or older and their spouses. Self-reported sleep duration per night was obtained from face-to-face interviews. The ADL was measured using a 6-item summary assessed with an ADL scale that included eating, dressing, getting into or out of bed, bathing, using the toilet, and continence. Multiple generalized linear regression models-adjusted for age, sex, education, marital status, tobacco and alcohol use, depression, place of residence, sensory impairment, self-reported health status, life satisfaction, daytime napping, chronic disease condition, and sample weights-were used. Results Data were analyzed from 17,607 participants, of whom 8375 (47.6%) were men. The mean (SD) age was 62.7 (10.0) years. Individuals with 4 hours or less (odds ratio [OR] 1.91, 95% CI 1.60-2.27; P<.001), 5 hours (OR 1.33, 95% CI 1.09-1.62; P=.006), 9 hours (OR 1.48, 95% CI 1.13-1.93; P<.001), and 10 hours or more (OR 1.88, 95% CI 1.47-2.14; P<.001) of sleep per night had a higher risk of ADL disability than those in the reference group (7 hours per night) after adjusting for several covariates. Restricted cubic splines analysis suggested a U-shaped association between sleep duration and ADL disability. When sleep duration fell below 7 hours, an increased sleep duration was associated with a significantly low risk of ADL disability, which was negatively correlated with sleep duration until it fell below 7 hours (OR 0.83, 95% CI 0.79-0.87; P<.001). When sleep duration exceeded 7 hours, the risk of ADL disability would increase facing prolonged sleep duration (OR 1.19, 95% CI 1.12-1.27; P<.001). ADL disability should be monitored in individuals with insufficient (≤4 or 5 hours per night) or excessive (9 or ≥10 hours per night) sleep duration. Unlabelled In this study, a U-shaped association between sleep duration and ADL disability was found. Future longitudinal studies are needed to establish temporality and examine the mechanisms of the associations between sleep duration and ADL disability.

Abstract
Objective This study aims to elucidate the potential mediating role of depression in the relationship between early-life relationships with caregivers and subsequent cognitive impairment in later adulthood. Methods Leveraging data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), we included a cohort of 10,828 participants aged 45 and above. We assessed the quality of childhood caregiver relationships using specific relationship scores and evaluated cognitive function through the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores obtained in 2018. Depressive symptoms were measured utilizing the CES-D-10 scale. To explore the interrelationships among these variables, we employed multivariable logistic regression models and non-parametric bootstrap methods to assess the mediating effect of depression. Results The study unveiled significant disparities between the cognitive impairment group and the cognitively normal group in terms of gender, age, educational attainment, hypertension status, depression levels, and the nature of relationships with parents during childhood. Regression analyses demonstrated a positive correlation between childhood caregiver relationship scores and cognitive impairment (Odds Ratio [OR] = 1.01, 95% Confidence Interval [CI]: 1.00-1.02, p = 0.01). Importantly, depression exhibited a significant mediating effect in this association, accounting for approximately 20% of the total effect (Proportion Mediated = 20%, p = 0.008). The influence was more pronounced concerning relationships with female caregivers, where depression mediated 11.5% of the effect (Proportion Mediated = 11.5%, p < 0.001). Conversely, the mediating effect of depression on relationships with male caregivers was not statistically significant. Conclusion The findings underscore that early-life relationships with caregivers have a profound impact on cognitive function in later life, with depression serving as a crucial mediator, particularly among women. These insights highlight the importance of fostering a positive familial environment during childhood, mitigating adverse parenting practices, and implementing early interventions targeting depression to potentially reduce the risk of cognitive impairment and promote healthy aging.

Abstract
Background Social participation (SP) has been associated with cognitive benefits among older adults; however, little is known about SP patterns and their relationships with cognitive function in cognitively impaired populations. This study aimed to identify SP patterns among cognitively impaired older individuals and evaluate their associations with subsequent cognitive function, specifically mental intactness and episodic memory. Methods Data were drawn from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), including 5,673 individuals aged 60 years and older with cognitive impairment from 2015 to 2018. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used to identify SP patterns, and hierarchical linear regression analyses were conducted to examine associations between these patterns and cognitive function. Results Four distinct SP patterns were identified: "Offline Social Participation Group" (Class 1), "Intellectual Social Participation Only Group" (Class 2), "Club and Volunteer Activities Group" (Class 3), and "Minimal Social Participation Group" (Class 4). The Class 4 comprised the majority (73%) and exhibited the poorest cognitive outcomes. Compared to the Class 4, Class 2 showed significant improvements in mental intactness (p < 0.001) and episodic memory (p = 0.022), while Class 3 demonstrated significant improvements in mental intactness (p = 0.032) but not episodic memory. Class 1 showed significant improvements in episodic memory (p = 0.023). Conclusion This study highlights the cognitive benefits of social participation, particularly intellectual activities, for older adults with cognitive impairment. Targeted interventions promoting SP, especially intellectual activities, are essential to mitigate cognitive decline and improve cognitive resilience in vulnerable populations.

Abstract
Air pollution and its effects on population health are currently among the most important public health issues. It is well established that the impact of air pollution on health is exceedingly high, although it ignores its real scope and effects on the aging process because studies on air quality have largely focused on younger age groups. Herein, we emphasize the relevance of air quality to the behavioral aging process, taking into account the place of residence - rural or urban. We raise the following question: Can air quality and residential settings modulate cognitive, emotional and social behaviors during the aging? Some studies have analyzed the role of residential settings and air pollution in the context of a behavioral frame in elderly people. Based on the analyzed literature, this revision concluded that air pollutants affect cognitive function, increasing the risk of dementia as well as depression and anxiety emotional responses. In addition, social networks and inclusion can modulate and mitigate the effects observed during the aging in rural areas that are exposed to less contamination. Although there is no consensus, it seems that some observed behavioral effects are sex-dependent, as women are more vulnerable to air pollution. Additionally, we examined why older adults are vulnerable to the health effects of Particulate Matter (PM) exposure and highlighted the importance of social health in this context. Environmental agents could be the key to understanding the susceptibility and variability observed during aging in behavioral symptoms. Although cognitive decline is related to increased age, it is not a manipulated factor. Efforts should be centered on locating factors implicated in the aging process that could be susceptible to manipulation or variation, such as the choice of the place of residence and the air that we are breathing. Given the significant societal impact of PM, research and policy regulations should be closely aligned and collaborative.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE As the population ages, concerns about cognitive decline have become increasingly relevant in medical consultations. This study aims to analyze the interaction between muscle strength, lung function, and cognitive function in Chinese middle-aged and older adults, providing a theoretical basis for better prevention of cognitive decline. METHODS This study used data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) wave 3, including 13 716 participants aged 45 years or older. Cognitive function was assessed through two dimensions, resulting in a total score ranging from 0 to 31 points, with higher scores indicating better cognitive function. Muscle strength was measured using normalized grip strength and chair-standing time, while lung function was evaluated using peak expiratory flow (PEF). RESULTS Total cognitive function scores exhibited significant correlations with grip strength, chair-standing time, and PEF. Muscle strength and lung function demonstrated significant associations with cognitive function, with lung function emerging as a notable mediating factor. This relationship persisted even after adjusting for potential confounding variables. Specifically, PEF played a substantial mediating role in linking grip strength to cognitive function scores (estimated indirect effect = 0.0132, boot-strapped standard error = 0.0015, boot-strapped standard 95% confidence interval = 0.0104, 0.0162). Additionally, PEF served as a significant mediator in the association between chair-standing time and cognitive function scores (estimated indirect effect = -0.0204, boot-strapped standard error = 0.0023, boot-strapped standard 95% confidence interval = -0.0251, -0.0159). CONCLUSION The study highlights the importance of addressing declines in muscle strength and lung function to identify risk factors associated with cognitive function. Understanding these relationships can provide insights into potential pathways linking these variables and may aid in better prevention of cognitive decline. Further long-term longitudinal cohort studies are needed to explore the causality between these factors.

Abstract
China accounts for 1/5 of the global population and China faces a particularly heavy dementia burden due to its rapidly ageing population. Unique historical events, genetic background, sociocultural factors, lifestyle, and the COVID-19 pandemic further influence cognitive outcomes in the Chinese population. We searched PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase for community-based cohort studies related to dementia in the Chinese population, and summarized the characteristics, methodologies, and major findings published over the last 25 years from 39 cohorts. We identified critical research gaps and propose future directions, including enhancing sample representativeness, investigating China-specific risk factors, expanding exposure measurements to the whole life-span, collecting objective data, conducting administer-friendly domain-specific cognitive assessments, adopting pathological diagnostic criteria, standardizing biobank construction, verifying multi-modal biomarkers, examining social and genetic-environmental aspects, and monitoring post-COVID cognitive health, to approach high quality of dementia studies that can provide solid evidence to policy making and promote global brain health research.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although there have been many studies on the relationship between ambient air pollution and cognitive functioning in developed countries, there are no studies focusing on the interaction between ambient air pollution and social activities. This study aims to examine interactive effects of ambient air pollution and social activities on cognitive function in Chinese middle-aged and older. METHODS This study used nationally representative longitudinal survey data of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) 2013, 2015 and 2018. The study explored the additive interaction effects of air pollutants and social activities on cognitive function in middle-aged and older adults by constructing mixed linear regression analyses containing interaction terms, as well as constructing additive interaction analyses with dummy variables containing four unordered categories that were partitioned according to median. In addition, the study further explored the interaction between air pollution and different types of social activities through an interaction term between air pollution and different types of social activities. RESULTS In the model fully adjusted for covariates such as age, sex, region, we found significant coefficients on the interaction term between PM2.5, O3 and social activities on cognitive function (PM2.5, β = -0.018, 95%CI: -0.029, -0.006; O3, β = 0.017, 95%CI: 0.007, 0.027). In the interaction analysis by constructing dummy variables, we found a significant antagonistic effect between PM2.5 and social activities (SI = 0.730, 95%CI: 0.674, 0.785), a possible antagonistic effect between NO2 and social activities (SI = 0.697, 95%CI: 0.648, 0.747), and a possible synergistic effect between O3 and social activities (SI = 1.769, 95%CI: 0.648, 0.747). In addition, the study found significant interactions between simple interaction, leisure and recreational, and intellectual participation social activities and air pollution. CONCLUSION Our study demonstrated an antagonistic effect of PM2.5 and social activities on cognitive function in middle-aged and older Chinese adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Most studies have focused on the effects of individual environmental risk factors on cognitive function; however, none have evaluated the association between residential environmental quality and cognitive impairment. METHODS Data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) were used to include 12,801 participants in a cross-sectional study and 8781 participants in a cohort study. Residential environmental quality was assessed using indicators such as particulate matter, types of household fuel, water sources, indoor temperature, and building types. Based on the residential environment quality score, participants were classified into three groups: comfortable (0-1 points), moderate (2-3 points), and poor (4-6 points). To evaluate the association between residential environmental quality and cognitive scores in the cross-sectional study, as well as the development of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in the cohort study, ordinary least squares (OLS) regression and logistic regression models were applied. RESULTS In the cross-sectional study, cognitive scores and performance across four dimensions-orientation, computation, memory, and drawing-showed a significant decline from the comfortable to the poor residential environment groups. In the fully adjusted OLS regression model, scores across these dimensions were significantly reduced in the moderate and poor groups compared to the comfortable group (P for trend <0.001). The incidence of MCI from 2011 to 2018 was 10.1 %, 16.8 %, and 18.8 % for participants living in comfortable, moderate, and poor environments, respectively, with statistically significant differences among groups (all P < 0.07). Logistic regression analysis revealed an odds ratio of 1.25 (95 % CI: 1.02-1.53) for the moderate group and 1.31 (95 % CI: 1.04-1.65) for the poor group, compared to the comfortable group (P for trend<0.05). CONCLUSIONS An inferior residential environment is associated with lower cognitive scores and a higher rik of developing MCI in middle-aged and older Chinese adults.

Abstract
Objectives This study examined the impact of sensory impairment (hearing and/or vision) combined with poor physical performance on cognitive decline and assessed whether social activity participation mediated this relationship. Methods Multilevel models were used to explore the relationships between sensory impairment, physical performance, their combination, and cognitive decline. A multilevel mediation model analyzed the mediating effect of social activity participation. The study included 10,149 adults aged 45 and older (mean age 53.84) from five waves (2011-2020) of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). The exposure variable, body function (BF), was categorized into six groups based on sensory impairment and physical performance. Cognitive function was measured using an adapted Chinese Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Results Compared to BF group 1 (normal physical performance without sensory impairment), individuals in BF group 4 (low physical performance without sensory impairment) (β = -0.670, P < 0.001), BF group 5 (low physical performance with single sensory impairment) (β = -1.029, P < 0.001), and BF group 6 (low physical performance with dual sensory impairment) (β = -1.630, P < 0.001) showed worse cognitive function. Only BF group 4 (β = -0.670, P < 0.001) had a faster cognitive decline. Mediation analysis revealed a significant indirect effect of social activity participation on cognitive function in BF group 4 (β = -0.03, P < 0.01, mediation proportion: 4.32%). Conclusion The combined effect of sensory impairment and low physical performance on cognitive decline may be accumulative, and social activity participation could mitigate this effect. Prioritizing social activity participation is crucial for health professionals and policymakers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Older adults with chronic diseases are at higher risk of depressive symptoms than those without. For the onset of depressive symptoms, the prediction ability of changes in common risk factors over a 2-year follow-up period is unclear in the Chinese older population. This study aimed to build risk prediction models (RPMs) to estimate the probability of incident 2-year depression using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). METHODS Four ML algorithms (logistic regression [LR], AdaBoost, random forest [RF] and k-nearest neighbor [kNN]) were applied to develop RPMs using the 2011-2015 cohort data. These developed models were then validated with 2018-2020 survey data. We evaluated the model performance using discrimination and calibration metrics, including an area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) and the precision-recall curve (AUPRC), accuracy, sensitivity and calibrations plot. Finally, we explored the key factors of depressive symptoms by the selected best predictive models. RESULTS This study finally included 7,121 participants to build models to predict depressive symptoms, finding a 21.5% prevalence of depression. Combining the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) with the logistic regression model (LR-SM) exhibited superior precision to predict depression than other models, with an AUROC and AUPRC of 0.612 and 0.468, respectively, an accuracy of 0.619 and a sensitivity of 0.546. In additiona, external validation of the LR-SM model using data from the 2018-2020 data also demonstrated good predictive ability with an AUROC of 0.623 (95% CI: 0.555- 0.673). Sex, self-rated health status, occupation, eyesight, memory and life satisfaction were identified as impactful predictors of depression. CONCLUSIONS Our developed models exhibited high accuracy, good discrimination and calibration profiles in predicting two-year risk of depression among older adults with chronic diseases. This model can be used to identify Chinese older population at high risk of depression and intervene in a timely manner.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Evidence suggests that long-term exposure to air pollution may increase the risk of dementia and related cognitive outcomes. A major source of air pollution is automotive traffic, which is modifiable by technological and regulatory interventions. OBJECTIVES We examined associations of four traffic-related air pollutants with rates of cognitive decline in a cohort of older adults. METHODS We analyzed data from the Chicago Health and Aging Project (CHAP), a longitudinal (1993-2012) community-based cohort study of older adults that included repeated assessments of participants' cognitive performance. Leveraging previously developed air pollution models, we predicted participant-level exposures to the tailpipe pollutants oxides of nitrogen (NO X ) and nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ), plus the nontailpipe pollutants copper and zinc found in coarse particulate matter [PM with aerodynamic diameter 2.5 μ m to 10 μ m (PM 2.5 - 10 , Cu ) and PM 2.5 - 10 , Zn , respectively], over the 3 y prior to each participant's baseline assessment. Using generalized estimating equations, we estimated covariate-adjusted associations of each pollutant with rates of cognitive decline. We probed the robustness of our results via several sensitivity analyses, including alterations to the length of the exposure assessment window and exploring the influence of pre- and post-baseline selection bias. RESULTS Using data from 6,061 participants, estimated associations of these pollutant exposures with cognitive decline were largely inconsistent with large adverse effects. For example, a standard deviation (5.8 ppb ) increment in NO X corresponded to a slightly slower rate of cognitive decline [e.g., mean difference in change in global score, 0.010 standard unit/5 y, 95% confidence interval (CI): -0 .016 , 0.036]. The results of most of our sensitivity analyses were in generally similar to those of our main analyses, but our prebaseline selection bias results suggest that our analytic results may have been influenced by differential survivorship into our study sample. DISCUSSION In this large prospective cohort study, we did not observe compelling evidence that long-term TRAP exposure is associated with cognitive decline. https://doi.org/10.1289/EHP14585.

Abstract
The incidence of neurodegenerative diseases is a growing concern worldwide, affecting individuals from diverse backgrounds. Although these pathologies are primarily associated with aging and genetic susceptibility, their severity varies among the affected population. Numerous studies have indicated air pollution as a significant contributor to the increasing prevalence of neurodegeneration. Cohort studies have provided compelling evidence of the association between prolonged exposure to different air toxicants and cognitive decline, behavioural deficits, memory impairment, and overall neuronal health deterioration. Furthermore, molecular research has revealed that air pollutants can disrupt the body's protective mechanisms, participate in neuroinflammatory pathways, and cause neuronal epigenetic modifications. The mitochondrial epigenome is particularly interesting to the scientific community due to its potential to significantly impact our understanding of neurodegenerative diseases' pathogenesis and their release in the peripheral circulation. While protein hallmarks have been extensively studied, the possibility of using circulating epigenetic signatures, such as methylated DNA fragments, miRNAs, and genome-associated factors, as diagnostic tools and therapeutic targets requires further groundwork. The utilization of circulating epigenetic signatures holds promise for developing novel prognostic strategies, creating paramount point-of-care devices for disease diagnosis, identifying therapeutic targets, and developing clinical data-based disease models utilizing multi-omics technologies and artificial intelligence, ultimately mitigating the threat and prevalence of neurodegeneration.

Abstract
Emerging studies have suggested the association of ambient air pollution with worse cognitive function; however, causal evidence remains scarce. We aimed to estimate the effect of particulate matter (PM) exposure on overall and domain-specific cognitive function. A total of 14,205 participants aged 45 years and above were drawn from the 2015 wave of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Cognitive function was assessed using a standardized questionnaire consisting of two domains: episodic memory and mental status. Participants' exposure to city-level PM (PM1, PM2.5, and PM10) was evaluated using satellite-based spatiotemporal models. To avoid potential endogenous biases, an instrumental variable method with two-stage least squares estimation was employed to examine the effect of air pollution on overall and domain-specific cognitive function. Stratified analysis was further performed based on sociodemographic characteristics. We found PM exposure exertedsignificant adverse effects on overall and domain-specific cognitive function, with mental status being more adversely affected as compared to episodic memory. The effect of PM exposure was more pronounced with smaller particle sizes, with PM1 exhibiting the largest effect size. Moreover, participants with lower education attainment were more adversely affected by PM exposure. Our findings add additional evidence of the potential causal role of PM exposure in worsening overall and domain-specific cognitive function. Efforts to further reduce PM are needed to protect the cognitive health of the aging Chinese population.

Abstract
As the population of urban areas is increasing continually, analysis of the particulate concentration dynamics in these areas is crucial. Therefore, this study investigated the temporal and spatial variabilities of PM1, PM2.5, and PM10 over the urban area of Turin in the Po Valley, Italy, based on high-resolution data from a monitoring campaign conducted between 2018 and 2021 (including COVID-19 lockdown period). The study also performed a source direction analysis of the urban observation using the conditional bivariate probability function (CBPF). The results showed substantial differences in PM10 concentration at background (28-30 µg/m3), and traffic stations (36 µg/m3). PM2.5 concentration was highest at traffic stations (24 µg/m3). During the day, the highest values occurred at 9:00-11:00 AM, and the lowest concentrations occurred at 4:00-6:00 PM. The concentration peak position changed in a daily bimodal trend with the season. According to the CBPF, the relevant external particulate contributions to the Turin area are from the direction of the Po Valley (N-NE) and the typical direction of Saharan dust transport (S-SW). The present study contributes to scientific understanding by providing information on one of the main European pollutant hot spots and discussing the trends of emerging pollutants, like PM1.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cognition disorders not only lead to adverse health consequences but also contribute to a range of socioeconomic challenges and diminished capacity for performing routine daily activities. In the digital era, understanding the impact of digital exclusion on cognitive function is crucial, especially in developing countries. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the association between digital exclusion and cognitive function among elderly populations in developing countries. METHODS Using data from CHARLS (China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study) from 2011 to 2020 and MHAS (Mexican Health & Aging Study) from 2012 to 2021, we defined digital exclusion as self-reported absence from the internet. Cognitive function was assessed through 5 tests: orientation, immediate verbal recall, delayed verbal recall, serial 7s, and figure recall. Cognitive function was assessed in 2 categories: worse cognition (a categorical variable that classifies cognition as either better or worse compared to the entire cohort population) and cognitive scores (a continuous variable representing raw cognitive scores across multiple follow-up waves). Logistic regression analyses and generalized estimating equation (GEE) analyses were used to examine the relationship between cognitive function and digital exclusion, adjusting for potential confounders, including demographics, lifestyle factors, history of chronic diseases, basic activities of daily living (BADL) disability, instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) disability, and basic cognitive abilities. RESULTS After excluding participants with probable cognitive impairment at baseline and those who did not have a complete cognitive assessment in any given year (ie, all tests in the cognitive assessment must be completed in any follow-up wave), a total of 24,065 participants in CHARLS (n=11,505, 47.81%) and MHAS (n=12,560, 52.19%) were included. Of these, 96.78% (n=11,135) participants in CHARLS and 70.02% (n=8795) in MHAS experienced digital exclusion. Adjusted logistic regression analyses revealed that individuals with digital exclusion were more likely to exhibit worse cognitive performance in both CHARLS (odds ratio [OR] 2.04, 95% CI 1.42-2.99; P<.001) and MHAS (OR 1.40, 95% CI 1.26-1.55; P<.001). Gender and age did not significantly modify the relationship between digital exclusion and worse cognition (intervention P>.05). The fully adjusted mean differences in global cognitive scores between the 2 groups were 0.98 (95% CI 0.70-1.28; P<.001) in CHARLS and 0.50 (95% CI 0.40-0.59; P<.001) in MHAS. CONCLUSIONS A substantial proportion of older adults, particularly in China, remain excluded from internet access. Our study examined longitudinal changes in cognitive scores and performed cross-sectional comparisons using Z-score standardization. The findings suggest that digital exclusion is linked to an increased risk of cognitive decline among older adults in developing countries. Promoting internet access may help mitigate this risk and support better cognitive health in these populations.

Abstract
Background Although numerous studies have discussed about the impact of air pollution on cognitive function, a consensus has yet to be reached, necessitating further exploration of their relationship. The aim of this study is to reveal the effects of major air pollutants on cognitive function in Chinese middle-aged and older adults, while considering the lagged effects of pollution. Methods Panel data were constructed by integrating the air pollutants concentration (particulate matter diameter ≤1 µm (μm) (PM1), PM2.5, PM10, nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ozone (O3)) among 28 provinces in China and the personal characteristics from China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study participants during the period of 2011-2015. To explore the effects of single pollutants and their interactions on cognitive function, panel linear regression using ordinary least squares method was employed, and first-order lag effects (two-year interval) of air pollution were introduced into the models. Results Our study revealed that, after adjusting for confounding factors, higher levels of particulate matter (PM1, coefficient (Coef.) = -0.093, P = 0.001; PM2.5, Coef. = -0.051, P = 0.001; PM10, Coef. = -0.030, P = 0.001) and NO2 (Coef. = -0.094, P = 0.006) were associated with lower cognitive function scores among the participants. Moreover, the interaction between the five major pollutants exhibited a negative effect on cognitive function(Coef. = -2.89, P = 0.004). Conclusions PM1, PM2.5, PM10 have detrimental effects on the cognitive function of middle-aged and elderly adults in China, where increasing particle diameter correlates with a less negative impacts, providing theoretical underpinnings for the formulation of environmental protection policies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Mild cognitive impairment represents a pivotal stage in the cognitive decline of older adults, with a considerable risk of advancing to dementia. Recognizing how living environmental factors affect cognition is crucial for crafting effective prevention and intervention strategies. This study seeks to elucidate the relationship between various living environmental factors and cognitive function, with a specific focus on mild cognitive impairment, within a Chinese elderly population. METHODS This is a cross-section and longitudinal study. Utilizing data from CHARLS, our cross-sectional analysis included 4,401 participants, while the cohort study comprised 3,177 individuals. We assessed living environmental factors based on household fuel types, water sources, indoor temperatures, residential building types, and ambient PM2.5 levels. We employed multiple linear regression for cross-sectional analyses and Cox proportional hazards regression models for longitudinal assessments to determine the effects of living environments on cognitive function and MCI risk. Stratified analyses, interaction tests, and sensitivity analyses were conducted to further validate our findings. RESULTS The findings revealed that, compared to those in high-risk environments, participants in low-risk settings exhibited higher cognitive scores (β = 1.25, 95%CI: 0.85, 1.65), better mental status (β = 0.70, 95%CI: 0.48, 0.92), and improved episodic memory (β = 0.27, 95%CI: 0.13, 0.41). Over a 7-year follow-up, the use of low-risk living environments (HR = 0.67, 95%CI: 0.49, 0.91), including clean fuels (HR = 0.74, 95%CI: 0.57, 0.95) and tap water (HR = 0.84, 95%CI: 0.71, 1.00), demonstrated a protective effect against MCI development. This correlation remained significant regardless of age, gender, residence, education level, smoking, alcohol consumption, and depression. CONCLUSION This research provides substantial evidence that living environmental factors significantly affect cognitive function and MCI risk in Chinese older adults. Enhancing living conditions may be a key strategy for promoting cognitive health and preventing MCI in this demographic. Further research is necessary to explore the long-term impacts and potential intervention strategies to optimize living environments for better cognitive outcomes in aging populations.

Abstract
Objective To explore the trajectories of cognitive function development and predictive factors in disabled middle-aged and older adults. Methods Utilizing data from 983 disabled middle-aged and older adults in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) from 2013 to 2020, latent growth mixture models were constructed to analyze the categories of cognitive function development trajectories and their predictive factors. Results The cognitive function trajectories of the disabled middle-aged and older adults were classified into three categories: rapid decline (32.6%), Slow decline (36.1%), and Stable (31.2%). Multinomial logistic regression analysis identified age, gender, residence, education, marital status, household income, sleep duration, depression, hearing ability, and social participation as predictors of these trajectories. Conclusion There is heterogeneity in the cognitive function development trajectories among disabled middle-aged and older adults. Healthcare professionals can implement targeted health management based on the characteristics of different groups to prevent the deterioration of cognitive function in this population.

Abstract
OBJECT The relationship between sleep duration trajectories and cognitive decline remains uncertain. This study aims to examine the connections between various patterns of sleep duration and cognitive function. METHODS Group-based trajectory modeling (GBTM) was employed to identify longitudinal trajectories of sleep duration over four-year follow-up period, while considering age, sex and nap duration as adjustments. Logistic regression was utilized to analyze the association between sleep trajectories and cognition, with odds ratios (OR) and 95 % confidence intervals (CI) reported. Subgroup analyses based on various demographic characteristics were conducted to explore potential differences in sleep trajectories and cognitive decline across different population subgroups. RESULTS A total of 5061 participants were followed for four years, and three sleep duration trajectories were identified: high increasing (n = 2101, 41.6 %), stable increasing (n = 2087, 40.7 %), and low decreasing (n = 873, 17.7 %). After adjustment for basic demographic information, health status, and baseline cognition, the high increasing trajectory was found to be associated with cognitive decline in terms of global cognition (OR:1.52,95 %CI:1.18-1.96), mental intactness (OR:1.36,95 %CI:1.07-1.73) and episodic memory (OR:1.33, 95 %CI:1.05-1.67), as compared to stable increasing trajectory. These associations were particularly prominent among the non-elderly population (≤65 years) and those without depressive symptoms. CONCLUSION This study suggests that both high increasing and low decreasing sleep duration trajectories are linked to cognitive decline, as compared to the stable increasing trajectory. Long-term attention to changes in sleep duration facilitates early prevention of cognitive decline.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Dementia is an important disease burden among the elderly, and its occurrence may be profoundly affected by environmental factors. Evidence of the relationship between air pollution and dementia is emerging, but the extent to which this can be offset by lifestyle factors remains ambiguous. METHODS This study comprised 155,828 elder adults aged 60 years and above in the UK Biobank who were dementia-free at baseline. Cox proportional hazard models were conducted to examine the associations of annual average levels of air pollutants in 2010, including nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitrogen oxides (NOX), particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10, and PMcoarse) and lifestyle factors recorded at baseline [physical activity (PA), sleep patterns, or smoking status] with incident risk of dementia, and their interactions on both multiplicative and additive scales. RESULTS During a 12-year period of follow-up, 4,389 incidents of all-cause dementia were identified. For each standarddeviationincrease in ambient NO2, NOX or PM2.5, all-cause dementia risk increases by 1.07-fold [hazard ratio (HR) and 95 % confidence interval (CI) = 1.07 (1.04, 1.10)], 1.05-fold (95 % CI: 1.02, 1.08) and 1.07-fold (95 % CI: 1.04, 1.10), whereas low levels of PA, poor sleep patterns, and smoking are associated with an elevated risk of dementia [HR (95 % CI) = 1.17 (1.09, 1.26), 1.13 (1.00, 1.27), and 1.14 (1.07, 1.21), respectively]. Furthermore, these air pollutants show joint effects with low PA, poor sleep patterns, and smoking on the onset of dementia. The moderate to high levels of PA could significantly or marginally significantly modify the associations between NO2, NOX or PM2.5 (P-int = 0.067, 0.036, and 0.067, respectively) and Alzheimer's disease (AD), but no significant modification effects are found for sleep patterns or smoking status. CONCLUSION The increased exposures of NO2, NOX, or PM2.5 are associated with elevated risk of dementia among elderly UK Biobank population. These air pollutants take joint effects with low PA, poor sleep patterns, and smoking on the development of dementia. In addition, moderate to high levels of PA could attenuate the incident risk of AD caused by air pollution. Further prospective researches among other cohort populations are warranted to validate these findings.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Impact of outdoor and household air pollution on physical function remains unelucidated. This study examined the influence of various ambient particulate sizes (PM1, PM2.5, and PM10) and household fuel usage on physical function. METHODS Data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) spanning 2011 and 2015 were utilized. The physical functional score was computed by summing scores from four tests: grip strength, gait speed, chair stand test, and balance. Multivariate linear and linear mixed-effects models were used to explore the separate and combined effects of PM1, PM2.5, PM10 and household fuel use on physical function in the cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses, respectively, and to further observe the effects of fuel cleanup on physical function in the context of air pollution exposure. RESULTS Both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses revealed negative correlations between PM1 (β = -0.044; 95% CI: -0.084, -0.004), PM2.5 (β = -0.024; 95% CI: -0.046, -0.001), PM10 (β = -0.041; 95% CI: -0.054, -0.029), and physical function, with a more pronounced impact observed for fine particulate matter (PM1). Cleaner fuel use was associated with enhanced physical function compared to solid fuels (β = 0.143; 95% CI: 0.070, 0.216). The presence of air pollutants and use of solid fuels had a negative impact on physical function, while cleaner fuel usage mitigated the adverse effects of air pollutants, particularly in areas with high exposure. CONCLUSION This study underscores the singular and combined detrimental effects of air pollutants and solid fuel usage on physical function. Addressing fine particulate matter, specifically PM1, and prioritizing efforts to improve household fuel cleanliness in regions with elevated air pollution levels are crucial for preventing physical disability.

Abstract
The brain controls the nerve system, allowing complex emotional and cognitive activities. The microbiota-gut-brain axis is a bidirectional neural, hormonal, and immune signaling pathway that could link the gastrointestinal tract to the brain. Over the past few decades, gut microbiota has been demonstrated to be an essential component of the gastrointestinal tract that plays a crucial role in regulating most functions of various body organs. The effects of the microbiota on the brain occur through the production of neurotransmitters, hormones, and metabolites, regulation of host-produced metabolites, or through the synthesis of metabolites by the microbiota themselves. This affects the host's behavior, mood, attention state, and the brain's food reward system. Meanwhile, there is an intimate association between the gut microbiota and exercise. Exercise can change gut microbiota numerically and qualitatively, which may be partially responsible for the widespread benefits of regular physical activity on human health. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a non-invasive method to show areas of brain activity enabling the delineation of specific brain regions involved in neurocognitive disorders. Through combining exercise tasks and fMRI techniques, researchers can observe the effects of exercise on higher brain functions. However, exercise's effects on brain health via gut microbiota have been little studied. This article reviews and highlights the connections between these three interactions, which will help us to further understand the positive effects of exercise on brain health and provide new strategies and approaches for the prevention and treatment of brain diseases.

Abstract
Many amine pollutants exist in the atmosphere. Lower aliphatic amines promote the formation and growth of particles into PM2.5, which damages the heart, lungs, and kidneys of the human body. PM2.5, a common atmospheric particulate pollutant with complex compositions, is the main cause of haze weather. Therefore, measuring the contents of lower aliphatic amines and cations in PM2.5 is of great significance for monitoring environmental air quality and protecting human health. This study established a suppressed ion-chromatographic method with conductivity for the simultaneous detection of four lower aliphatic amines (methylamine, dimethylamine, trimethylamine, and ethylamine) and five cations (Na+, N[Formula: see text], and Ca2+ showed high concentrations. The contents of the four lower aliphatic amines were low; however, the ethylamine content in some samples was high. The results indicate that the proposed method meets the quantification requirements for cations and lower aliphatic amines in PM2.5, with simple processing, high sensitivity, and good accuracy. It can quickly and accurately detect a large number of samples and be used to assess the pollution of small particles in the air as well as trace pollution sources to protect human health.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the combined effect of abdominal obesity and depressive symptoms on the risk to type 2 diabetes, while also assessing the potential influence of various glycemic states and gender on this combined relationship. METHODS Data is acquired from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, and 5949 participants were included for analysis. Participants were divided into four groups: neither have abdominal obesity nor depressive symptoms (AO-/DS-), only have depressive symptoms (AO-/DS+), only have abdominal obesity (AO+/DS-), and have both abdominal obesity and depressive symptoms (AO+/DS+). Stratified analyses differentiating the glycemic statuses and sex of the participants were also carried out. RESULTS After adjusting for the confounders, the AO-/DS+, AO+/DS- and AO+/DS+ phenotypes were all discovered to be risk factors for type 2 diabetes (OR = 1.38, 95%CI: 1.06-1.79; OR = 2.07, 95%CI: 1.63-2.63; OR = 2.38, 95%CI: 1.83-3.11, respectively) compared with the AO-/DS- phenotype in the overall population. In further stratified analyses, we arrived at the same conclusion for normoglycemic individuals, especially in females. For prediabetes and males, the AO+/DS- and AO+/DS+ phenotypes are risk factors for type 2 diabetes compared with the AO-/DS- phenotype, but not with AO-/DS+. CONCLUSION Regardless of glycemic status and sex, the coexistence of abdominal obesity and depressive symptoms were associated with an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. Depressive symptoms were independent risk factors for type 2 diabetes only in normoglycemic individuals and females.

Abstract
Evidence for the causal relationship of particulate matters (PMs) exposure with kidney disease, especially PM1, PM1-2.5 and PM2.5-10, remained scarce among developing countries with severe pollution. We conducted a longitudinal cohort study involving 13,041 adults with free kidney disease from 150 Chinese counties. PMs concentrations were generated using a well-established satellite-based spatiotemporal model. And the time-varying Cox regression model along with stratified analyses were performed to determine the association and potential modifiers, respectively. We also calculated the population-attributable fraction to evaluate the burden of kidney disease attributable to PMs pollution. Between Jan 2011 and Dec 2018, 985 kidney disease incidents were identified with an incidence rate of 12.69 per 1000 person-years. Significant dose-response relationships were observed for all 5 kinds PMs. Specifically, an increased risk of kidney disease was associated with per 10 μg/m3 increment of PM1 (HR = 1.187, 95%CI: 1.114 to 1.265), PM1-2.5 (1.326, 1.212 to 1.452), PM2.5 (1.197, 1.139 to 1.258), PM2.5-10 (1.297, 1.240 to 1.357), and PM10 (1.137, 1.108 to 1.166). A mixture analysis method of weighted quantile regression model revealed that PM2.5-10 predominated the PMs mixture index (57.1 %), and followed with PM10 (26.4 %). Stratified analyses indicated the elder, overweight persons, smokers, respiratory patients and urban residents were more vulnerable to PMs pollution than their counterparts. Calculated population attributable fractions of kidney disease attributable to PMs pollution was 16.67-39.47 %. Higher PMs pollution was associated with the increased risk of kidney disease development in China. Acceleration of efforts to reduce PMs pollution was therefore urgently needed to alleviate kidney disease burden.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies have explored the association between temperature and cognitive function. However, few studies have examined the effect of extreme temperature on cognitive function. In this study, we aimed to quantify the long-term effect of extreme temperature (e.g., heat waves, cold spells, and hot night excess (HNE)) on cognitive performance in middle-aged and older people in China. METHOD We investigated 7915 aged >45 years people from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), surveyed in 2011 and 2015. A structured questionnaire was utilized to assess cognitive function, including four dimensions: episodic memory, attention, orientation, and visuo-construction. Hourly ambient temperature from the ERA5-Land datasets were used to calculate variables indicating extreme temperature. We performed difference-in-difference (DID) models to assess the potential causal relationship between extreme temperature and cognitive function. RESULTS Non-linear analyses suggested that both sustained increases in temperature and excessive variability in temperature increased the risk of cognitive decline. Meanwhile, we observed the extra risk of global cognitive function decline was 2.3% (95% Confidence interval (95% CI): 0.2%, 4.4%) for heat waves (one unit increase) and 5.9% (95% CI: 0.6%, 11.6%) for HNE (one unit increase), while the association for cold spells was insignificant. Two cognitive dimensions, episodic memory and visuo-construction, were sensitive to these two heat-related factors. CONCLUSION Extreme temperature was inversely related to cognitive performance in middle-aged and older adults, which was substantial for heat waves and HNE particularly. The effect size varied by cognitive dimensions.

Abstract
Studies have demonstrated that childhood maltreatment and adverse experiences lead to impaired cognitive function. However, relatively few studies have examined the independent effect of childhood emotional neglect on cognitive function in middle-aged and older adults, and the role of social engagement in this relationship. Using a sample from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, the current study examined the mediating role of social engagement in the association between childhood emotional neglect and cognitive function among middle-aged and older adults. Participants were 32,540 middle-aged and older adults (Mage = 63.45, SD = 8.83). Data were analyzed using a fixed effects model for panel data and bootstrap resampling method. Results showed that participants who experienced emotional neglect had poorer cognitive function (β = -.068, p < .001). Social engagement mediated 7.55% of the association between emotional neglect and cognitive function (β = -.004, 95% CI [-0.006, -0.002], p < .05). The results indicated that interventions are required to improve awareness of emotional neglect and facilitate healthy parenting practices. Further research on how to motivate adults who experienced emotional neglect to engage in social activities is necessary.

Abstract
This review highlights the significant impact of air quality, specifically particulate matter (PM), on cognitive decline and age-related diseases in the elderly. Despite established links to other pathologies, such as respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses, there is a pressing need for increased attention to the association between air pollution and cognitive aging, given the rising prevalence of neurocognitive disorders. PM sources are from diverse origins, including industrial activities and combustion engines, categorized into PM10, PM2.5, and ultrafine PM (UFPM), and emphasized health risks from both outdoor and indoor exposure. Long-term PM exposure, notably PM2.5, has correlated with declines in cognitive function, with a specific vulnerability observed in women. Recently, extracellular vesicles (EVs) have been explored due to the interplay between them, PM exposure, and human aging, highlighting the crucial role of EVs, especially exosomes, in mediating the complex relationship between PM exposure and chronic diseases, particularly neurological disorders. To sum up, we have compiled the pieces of evidence that show the potential contribution of PM exposure to cognitive aging and the role of EVs in mediating PM-induced cognitive impairment, which presents a promising avenue for future research and development of therapeutic strategies. Finally, this review emphasizes the need for policy changes and increased public awareness to mitigate air pollution, especially among vulnerable populations such as the elderly.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Long-term exposure to PM2.5 is related to poor lung function and cognitive impairment, but less is known about the pathway involved in this association. We aimed to explore whether the effect of PM2.5 on cognitive function was mediated by lung function. METHODS A total of 7 915 adults older than 45 years old were derived from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) collected in 2011 and 2015. PM2.5 exposure was estimated using a geographically weighted regression model. Lung function was measured by peak expiratory flow (PEF). Cognitive function was evaluated through a structured questionnaire with 4 dimensions: episodic memory, attention, orientation, and visuoconstruction. Under the counterfactual framework, causal mediation analysis was applied to examine direct and indirect associations. RESULTS An interquartile range (IQR) increase in PM2.5 change was significantly related to an 8.480 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 3.116, 13.845) decrease in PEF change and a 0.301 (95% CI: 0.100, 0.575) decrease in global cognitive score change. The direct and indirect effects of PM2.5 exposure on global cognitive performance were -0.279 (95% CI: -0.551, -0.060) and -0.023 (95% CI: -0.041, -0.010), respectively. The proportion of the indirect effect was 7.48% (p = .010). The same significant association appeared in only 2 dimensions, episodic memory and attention, which were both mediated by PEF. CONCLUSIONS Lung function played a partially mediating role in the association between long-term PM2.5 exposure and cognition. More clean air actions should be undertaken to improve lung function and cognitive function in older adults.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Household solid fuel use and social isolation are reported to increase the risk of depressive symptoms, but their joint effect has not yet been examined. This study aimed to explore the separate and joint effects of household solid fuel use and social isolation on depression. METHODS We used data from the latest four waves (2011-2018) of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Depression was defined as a score of ≥12 using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CES-D 10). Cox proportional hazards models were applied to explore the separate and joint associations of household solid fuel use and social isolation with incident depression. RESULTS During the seven-year follow-up, 2793 (30.25 %) out of the 9232 participants were identified with depressive symptoms. Solid fuel use for household heating or cooking was significantly associated with more hazards of depressive symptoms after adjusting for potential confounders (cooking: HR = 1.280, 95 % CI = 1.175-1.394; heating: HR = 1.142, 95 % CI = 1.054-1.238). High social isolation at baseline was also a significant predictor of incident depressive symptoms (HR = 1.139, 95 % CI = 1.053-1.231). Participants exposed to both solid fuel use and high social isolation were found to have higher hazards of experiencing depressive symptoms than those exposed to none or only one of these two risk factors (heating: HR for 'solid fuel use + high social isolation'=1.308 versus HR for other groups = 1-1.185; cooking: HR for 'solid fuel use + high social isolation' = 1.430 versus HR for other groups = 1-1.255). CONCLUSION Household solid fuel use and social isolation were separately and jointly associated with higher risks of incident depression. Appropriate interventions to reduce solid fuel use and social isolation are recommended to improve the psychological health among middle-aged and older adults in China.

Abstract
Outdoor air pollution has been considered as a severe environmental health issue that almost affecting everyone in the world, and intensive actions were launched. However, little is known about the association between dynamic changes in ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure and body mass index (BMI) among old adults. To investigate the dynamic changes in ambient PM2.5 and body mass index among the elderly, we included a total of 7204 participants from 28 provinces of China during 2011-2015 in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Ambient fine particle matter (PM2.5) was estimated using a well-validated space-time extremely randomized trees model. Change in PM2.5 and BMI (ΔPM2.5 and ΔBMI) were calculated as the value at a follow-up visit minus value at baseline. Linear mixed-effects models were applied to quantify the associations, controlling for sociodemographic factors. We found that per 1 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 exposure was associated with a 0.031-0.044 kg/m2 increase in BMI among the elderly. We observed an approximate linear concentration-response relationship of PM2.5 and BMI in each visit. Each 1 μg/m3 increase in ΔPM2.5 exposure was associated with an increase in ΔBMI (β = 0.040, 95% CI 0.030, 0.049), while per 1 μg/m3 decrease in the ΔPM2.5 exposure level was associated with a decrease in ΔBMI (β = -0.016, 95% CI -0.027, -0.004). Our findings suggest that dynamic changes in ambient PM2.5 was positively associated with changes in BMI among old Chinese population.

Abstract
The cognitive function status of older adults determines the social function and living quality of older adults, which is related to the healthy development and stability of the society. However, the impact of high or low ambient temperature on cognitive function in older adults remains unclear. Based on data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (CLHLS), we comprehensively assessed the impact of ambient temperature on the cognitive function of older adults in this study. The findings exhibited that for each 1 °C ascent in monthly temperature of high temperature, the examination score of global cognitive function of older adults decreased by 0.48 (95% CI 0.21-0.74), which was greater than that of 0.14 (95% CI 0.06-0.25) for each 1 °C reduction in low temperature. Overall, the detrimental effect of high temperature on cognitive function in older adults was more significant than that of low temperature, including on the five sub-cognitive functions involved. Our research provides vital technical guidance and reference for the health protection and prevention of cognitive function of older adults in specific external environmental conditions under the current climatic variation and temperature rise.

Abstract
The available evidence regarding the association between adherence to the Alternate Mediterranean Diet (AMED) and Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) dietary patterns and cognitive performance exhibits inconsistency, and its applicability within the Asian population remains uncertain. The association between adherence to the Chinese Food Pagoda (CHFP) and cognitive function is also unknown. In this study, we aimed to assess the association between adherence to the AMED, DASH, and CHFP different dietary patterns and cognitive function. The study included 3353 Chinese adults aged 55 years and over from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) in 2006. A 24 h dietary recall over three consecutive days was used to collect dietary information. Dietary patterns included AMED, DASH, and CHFP. A subset of items from the Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status-Modified was used for cognitive screening. Poor cognitive performance was defined as a global cognitive function score < 7. Binary logistic regression was used to estimate the association between adherence to the three different dietary patterns and cognitive function. Binary logistic regression analysis showed that there is a negative association between higher adherence to the AMED, DASH, and CHFP and poorer cognitive performance (AMED: OR = 0.594, 95% CI = 0.458-0.771, p < 0.001; DASH: OR = 0.652, 95% CI = 0.504-0.843, p = 0.001; CHFP: OR = 0.599, 95% CI = 0.417-0.861, p = 0.006). There was a significant interaction between each of the three dietary patterns and residential regions (AMED: p for interaction = 0.045; DASH: p for interaction = 0.003; CHFP: p for interaction < 0.001). Higher adherence to the AMED, DASH, and CHFP dietary patterns was inversely associated with poor cognition in Chinese middle-aged and elderly adults, particularly among urban residents.

Abstract
Environmental exposure to urban particulate matter (UPM) is a serious health concern worldwide. Although several studies have linked UPM to ocular diseases, no study has reported effects of UPM exposure on senescence in retinal cells. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of UPM on senescence and regulatory signaling in human retinal pigment epithelial ARPE-19 cells. Our study demonstrated that UPM significantly promoted senescence, with increased senescence-associated β-galactosidase activity. Moreover, both mRNA and protein levels of senescence markers (p16 and p21) and the senescence-associated secretory phenotype, including IL-1β, matrix metalloproteinase-1, and -3 were upregulated. Notably, UPM increased mitochondrial reactive oxygen species-dependent nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) activation during senescence. In contrast, use of NF-κB inhibitor Bay 11-7082 reduced the level of senescence markers. Taken together, our results provide the first in vitro preliminary evidence that UPM induces senescence by promoting mitochondrial oxidative stress-mediated NF-κB activation in ARPE-19 cells.

Abstract
Air pollution plays, nowadays, a huge role in human's health and in the personal economy. Moreover, there has been a rise in the prevalence of neurodevelopmental disorders like the Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in recent years. Current scientific studies have established a link between prenatal or perinatal exposure to environmental pollutants and ASD. This systematic review summarizes the current literature available about the relationship between exposure to air pollutants (particulate matter [PM], Second Organic Aerosols [SOA], Diesel Exhaust [DE], and Traffic Related Air Pollution [TRAP]) and neurodevelopmental disorders in preclinical models using rats and mice. The articles were selected and filtered using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology, and bias-evaluated using the SYstematic Review Centre for Laboratory animal Experimentation (SYRCLE) tool. Overall, our findings suggest that air pollutants are associated with negative developmental outcomes characterized by ASD-like behaviors, abnormal biochemical patterns, and impaired achievement of developmental milestones in rodents. However, there is not sufficient information in certain domains to establish a clear relationship. Abstract
BACKGROUND Traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) is a risk factor for cognitive function, whereas healthy lifestyles are associated with better cognition. We aimed to examine their joint effects on cognition among the Chinese elderly. METHODS The data from the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey was used. Participants' cognitive performance was assessed by the Chinese version of the mini-mental state examination. Residential proximity to major roadways was obtained through self-report and categorized into five categories: > 300 m, 201-300 m, 101-200 m, 50-100 m, and < 50 m, serving as a surrogate for TRAP. Six lifestyle behaviors (smoking, drinking, exercise, body mass index, sleep duration, and dietary diversity) were taken into account to calculate healthy lifestyle scores. The scores ranged from zero to six and were then divided into three groups: healthy (5-6), intermediate (2-4), and unhealthy (0-1). Logistic regression models were applied to investigate the joint effects of TRAP and healthy lifestyle scores on cognition. RESULTS Compared to participants living < 50 m from major roadways and adopting an unhealthy lifestyle, those living > 300 m from major roadways and adopting a healthy lifestyle had a significantly decreased risk of cognitive impairment. Stratified analysis indicated that the associations between TRAP and cognitive impairment were more pronounced among participants adopting an unhealthy lifestyle compared to the participants adopting a healthy lifestyle. CONCLUSIONS TRAP may impair cognitive function, and its detrimental impacts may be lessened by healthy lifestyles.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Due to the inaccuracy of the traditional geographical distance-based definition of left-behind status, data on the negative effect of left-behind status on cognitive function among older adults are controversial. AIMS This study examined the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of left-behind status with cognitive function in older Chinese adults. The left-behind status definition was based on the frequency of face-to-face parent-child meetings. METHODS Data from a nationally representative sample of 8 682 older adults (60+ years) in 2015 (5 658 left behind and 3 024 non-left behind), of which 6 933 completed the follow-up in 2018, were obtained from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. Left-behind older adults were broadly defined as those aged 60+ years who had living adult children and saw their children less than once per month. The cognitive function was assessed with a composite cognitive test with higher total scores indicating better cognitive function. RESULTS Left-behind older adults had significantly lower cognitive test scores than non-left-behind older adults in both 2015 (11.1 (6.0) vs 13.2 (5.9), t=15.863, p<0.001) and 2018 (10.0 (6.6) vs 12.4 (6.7), t=14.177, p<0.001). After adjusting for demographic factors, lifestyle factors, chronic medical conditions and the baseline cognitive test score (in the longitudinal analysis only), on average, the cognitive test score of left-behind older adults was 0.628 lower than their non-left-behind counterparts in 2015 (t=5.689, p<0.001). This difference in cognitive test scores attenuated to 0.322 but remained significant in 2018 (t=2.733, p=0.006). CONCLUSIONS Left-behind older Chinese adults have a higher risk of poor cognitive function and cognitive decline than their non-left-behind counterparts. Specific efforts targeting left-behind older adults, such as encouraging adult children to visit their parents more regularly, are warranted to maintain or delay the progression of cognitive decline.

Abstract
PM2.5 and home and community-based services (HCBSs) had been shown to affect cognition, but the evidence on their joint effects was limited. Aimed to study the joint effects of HCBSs and PM2.5 on cognition, we utilized the follow-up data of participants in the Chinese Longitudinal Health Longevity Survey (CLHLS) who were 65 years of age or older and had normal cognitive function at baseline for the 2008-2018, 2011-2018, and 2014-2018 waves. 16,954, 9,765, and 7192 participants from each of these three waves were initially recruited, respectively. The PM2.5 concentration data of each province in China from 2008 to 2018 was obtained from the Atmospheric Composition Analysis Group. Participants were asked what kind of HCBSs were available in their community. The cognitive status of the participants was evaluated by the Chinese version of Mini-Mental State Examination (CMMSE). We applied the Cox proportional hazard regression model to investigate the joint effects of HCBSs and PM2.5 on cognition and further stratified the analysis according to HCBSs. Hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were calculated based on Cox models. During a median follow-up period of 5.2 years, 911 (8.8%) participants with normal baseline cognitive function developed cognitive impairment. Compared to participants without HCBSs and exposed to the highest level of PM2.5, those with HCBSs and exposed to the lowest level of PM2.5 had a significantly reduced risk of developing cognitive impairment (HR = 0.428, 95% CI: 0.303-0.605). The results from the stratified analysis revealed that the detrimental effect of PM2.5 on cognition was more pronounced in participants without HCBSs (HR = 3.44, 95% CI: 2.18-5.41) compared with those with HCBSs (HR = 1.42, 95% CI: 0.77-2.61). HCBSs may attenuate the harmful impact of PM2.5 on cognitive status in the elderly Chinese and the government should further promote the application of HCBSs.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This systematic review summarises and evaluates the literature investigating associations between exposure to air pollution and general population cognition, which has important implications for health, social and economic inequalities, and human productivity. METHODS The engines MEDLINE, Embase Classic+Embase, APA PsycInfo, and SCOPUS were searched up to May 2022. Our inclusion criteria focus on the following pollutants: particulate matter, NOx, and ozone. The cognitive abilities of interest are: general/global cognition, executive function, attention, working memory, learning, memory, intelligence and IQ, reasoning, reaction times, and processing speed. The collective evidence was assessed using the NTP-OHAT framework and random-effects meta-analyses. RESULTS Eighty-six studies were identified, the results of which were generally supportive of associations between exposures and worsened cognition, but the literature was varied and sometimes contradictory. There was moderate certainty support for detrimental associations between PM2.5 and general cognition in adults 40+, and PM2.5, NOx, and PM10 and executive function (especially working memory) in children. There was moderate certainty evidence against associations between ozone and general cognition in adults age 40+, and NOx and reasoning/IQ in children. Some associations were also supported by meta-analysis (N = 14 studies, all in adults aged 40+). A 1 μg/m3 increase in NO2 was associated with reduced performance on general cognitive batteries (β = -0.02, p < 0.05) as was a 1 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 exposure (β = -0.02, p < 0.05). A 1μgm3 increase in PM2.5 was significantly associated with lower verbal fluency by -0.05 words (p = 0.01) and a decrease in executive function task performance of -0.02 points (p < 0.001). DISCUSSION Evidence was found in support of some exposure-outcome associations, however more good quality research is required, particularly with older teenagers and young adults (14-40 years), using multi-exposure modelling, incorporating mechanistic investigation, and in South America, Africa, South Asia and Australasia.

Abstract
PM2.5 has an aerodynamic diameter of less than or equal to 2.5 microns due to its inherent physical and chemical properties so that it can enter the alveoli through the respiratory tract for blood gas exchange. Numerous studies have shown that PM2.5 is a serious air pollutant that poses a wide range of health risks, especially for cancer. Bibliometric methods were employed to have comprehensively analyzed the research of PM2.5 in cancer for about a decade in Web of Science to identify hotspots and trends using VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and R. The field has undergone overall growth in the past decade. As research on PM2.5 in health deepens, cancer related to it expanded beyond the respiratory system to the digestive system, urinary system, female gonadal axis, breast cancer and other cancers. Another observation is that research on PM2.5 in cancer has progressed in the mechanisms of deterioration, such as the role of matrix metalloproteinases in cancer. In addition, research on the risks of PM2.5 in combination with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and heavy metals has also emerged. Results showed that there are relatively more studies on PM2.5 in high-latitude countries, which may be due to different national conditions, such as climate and coal combustion. Our research has combed through the progress of PM2.5 in cancer research and provided a supplement for developing pollution prevention ideas with different national conditions in this field.

Abstract
Recent extensive evidence suggests that ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5, with an aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm) may be neurotoxic to the brain and cause central nervous system damage, contributing to neurodevelopmental disorders, such as autism spectrum disorders, neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease, and mental disorders, such as schizophrenia, depression, and bipolar disorder. PM2.5 can enter the brain via various pathways, including the blood-brain barrier, olfactory system, and gut-brain axis, leading to adverse effects on the CNS. Studies in humans and animals have revealed that PM2.5-mediated mechanisms, including neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, systemic inflammation, and gut flora dysbiosis, play a crucial role in CNS damage. Additionally, PM2.5 exposure can induce epigenetic alterations, such as hypomethylation of DNA, which may contribute to the pathogenesis of some CNS damage. Through literature analysis, we suggest that promising therapeutic targets for alleviating PM2.5-induced neurological damage include inhibiting microglia overactivation, regulating gut microbiota with antibiotics, and targeting signaling pathways, such as PKA/CREB/BDNF and WNT/β-catenin. Additionally, several studies have observed an association between PM2.5 exposure and epigenetic changes in neuropsychiatric disorders. This review summarizes and discusses the association between PM2.5 exposure and CNS damage, including the possible mechanisms by which PM2.5 causes neurotoxicity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Studies on the effects of airborne particulates of diameter ≤ 1 µm (PM1), airborne particulates of diameter ≤ 2.5 µm (PM2.5) and airborne particulates of diameter ranges from 1 to 2.5 µm (PM1-2.5) on incidence of hyperuricemia are limited. We aimed to investigate the associations between PM1, PM2.5, and PM1-2.5 and hyperuricemia among male traffic officers. METHODS We conducted a prospective cohort study of 1460 traffic officers without hyperuricemia in Guangzhou, China from 2009 to 2016. Exposures of PM1 and PM2.5 were estimated with a spatiotemporal model. PM1-2.5 concentrations were calculated by subtracting PM1 from PM2.5 concentrations. Cox's proportional hazards regressions models were used to examine the association between PM1, PM2.5, and PM1-2.5 and hyperuricemia, adjusted for potential confounders. Associations between PM1, PM2.5, and PM1-2.5 and serum uric acid (SUA) levels were evaluated with multiple linear regression models. RESULTS Hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of hyperuricemia associated with 10 μg/m3 increment in PM1, PM2.5, and PM1-2.5 were 1.67 (95% CI:1.30-2.36), 1.49 (95% CI: 1.27-1.75), and 2.18 (95% CI: 1.58-3.02), respectively. The SUA concentrations increased by 12.23 μmol/L (95% CI: 5.91-18.56), 6.93 μmol/L (95% CI: 3.02-10.84), and 8.72 μmol/L (95% CI: 0.76-16.68) per 10 μg/m3 increase in PM1, PM2.5, and PM1-2.5, respectively. Stratified analyses indicated the positive associations of PM2.5 and PM1-2.5 with SUA levels were stronger in non-smokers, and PM1, PM2.5, and PM1-2.5 with SUA levels were stronger in non-drinkers. CONCLUSION Long-term PM1, PM2.5, and PM1-2.5 exposures may increase the risk of hyperuricemia and elevate SUA levels among male traffic officers, especially in non-smokers and non-drinkers.

Abstract
Air quality is a growing environmental concern that has implications for human physical and mental health. While air pollution has been linked to cognitive disease progression and declines in overall health, the impacts of air quality on athletic performance have not been extensively investigated. Much of the previous research focused on endurance sports indicates that air quality negatively impacts athletic performance; however, the effects of air quality on non-endurance elite team performance remains largely unknown. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of air quality on errors committed by Major League Baseball (MLB) teams, interceptions thrown by quarterbacks in the National Football League (NFL), and overall quarterback performance in the NFL. Linear regression analysis was used to determine the impact of the median air quality index (AQI) of counties with MLB and NFL teams on errors, interceptions, and overall quarterback performance of players on those MLB and NFL teams. AQI was a significant positive predictor of errors and interceptions, indicating increased errors and interceptions with decreased air quality. Similarly, quarterback performance was significantly reduced for quarterbacks from teams in counties with worse air quality. These findings suggest that air quality has a significant impact on performance in the MLB and NFL, indicating impairments in physical and cognitive performance in professional athletes when competing in areas with poorer air quality. Hence, it is likely that air quality impacts athletic performance in numerous sports that have not yet been investigated.

Abstract
Diabetes seriously affects the health of middle-aged and elderly. What we can do is to suppress the progression and avoid complications of diabetes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence, management and influencing factors in middle-aged and elderly diabetics. The data used in our study came from the follow-up survey (2015) of China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study. After all the questionnaire data of participants was acquired, the first screening step was conducted and the participants without blood glucose or glycosylated hemoglobin test results were excluded. In the second screening step, participants without self-reported diabetes, age <45 were excluded. After data screening, STATA 16.0 software (StataCorp, USA) was used to conduct statistical analysis. Multiple logistics regression was used to analyze the influencing factors of diabetes in middle-aged and elderly. After data screening, A total of 9738 participants were enrolled in the survey of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study in 2015, including diabetes 1965 and control 7773. The prevalence of diabetes in age >60 (22.20%) was significantly higher than that in age 45 to 60 (16.60%). Age, residence, physical activity, drinking, smoking and body mass index were key influencing factors according to the results of logistics regression. 46.92% diabetics were diagnosed in hospital, 22.14% were diagnosed by community medical care. 1298 among 1965 diabetes patients had standardized medication to control blood glucose, the rate was only 66.01%. The awareness rate of diabetes was only 28.75%, and the monitoring, treatment and accepting medical advice rates were 68.32%, 66.01% and 56.99% separately. The follow-up rate of diabetes was only 14.16%. Diabetes is widely prevalent in the middle-aged and elderly with the prevalence of 16.60% in the participants with age 45 to 60. The rate of self-rated diabetics underestimated the true prevalence of diabetes. Age, residence, physical activity, drinking, smoking and body mass index are key influencing factors to diabetes. Although a national diabetes health management model has been established, the awareness of diabetes was only 28.75%. Standardized diabetes registration and regular follow up should also be strictly implemented.

Abstract
Exposure to ambient air pollution and its threat to human health is a global concern, especially in the elderly population. Therefore, more in-depth studies are required to understand the extent of the harmful effects of particulate matter (PM) based on duration and levels of exposure. An investigation was conducted to determine the association between short- (1-14 days), medium- (1, 3, and 6 months), and long-term (1, 2, and 3 years) exposure to air pollutants (PM2.5 and PM10) and cognitive function among Koreans (4175 participants, mean age 67.8 years, 55.2% women) aged over 50 years. Higher levels of PM2.5 exposure for short to long term and PM10 exposure for medium to long term were found to be associated with decreased cognitive function, as indicated by lower scores of the Mini-Mental State Examination adopted in Korean (K-MMSE). There were significant effect modifications by sex, age group, alcohol consumption, physical activity, and smoking status in the association between long-term PM2.5 and PM10 exposure and cognitive function. These findings, which underscore the importance of the efforts to reduce the exposure levels and durations of air pollutants, especially in the vulnerable elderly population, provide evidence for establishing more stringent policies for air pollution regulations.
