Abstract
OBJECTIVES Previous studies suggested protective associations of vegetables and fruits (VF) intake with cognitive function, but evidence on specific types of VF was insufficient. METHODS The current study included 4066 participants from 1997 to 2006 in the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS) and 6170 participants from 2013 to 2020 in the Health and Retirement Study (HRS). Dietary intake (using 3-day 24-h dietary recalls in CHNS and food frequency questionnaire in HRS) and cognitive function (using the Telephone Interview for Cognitive Status-Modified, TICS-m) were measured. Linear mixed-effects models were used to estimate the beta coefficients (β) and the 95% confidence intervals (CI) to evaluate the association of VF with cognitive function (z-score) and its decline. RESULTS Highest intake of total VF was associated with better cognitive function and slower cognitive decline. Differences in cognitive function z-score between the highest and lowest tertiles of VF consumption were 0.039 (95% CI: 0.002, 0.076) for CHNS and 0.063 (95% CI: 0.026, 0.100) for HRS. The corresponding differences in annual cognitive decline were 0.011 (95% CI: 0.002, 0.021) and 0.012 (95% CI: 0.003, 0.020) units respectively. Vegetables and fruits showed independent associations with cognitive function and its decline. In specific VF subgroups, when comparing the highest to the lowest tertile intake, cruciferous vegetables (β = 0.058, 95% CI: 0.017, 0.100 in CHNS and β = 0.067, 95% CI: 0.032, 0.101 in HRS) and green leafy vegetables (β = 0.036, 95% CI: -0.001, 0.073 in CHNS and β = 0.082, 95% CI: 0.046, 0.117 in HRS) was associated with better cognitive function in both cohorts. Similarly, higher intake of dark-colored vegetables (β = 0.019, 95% CI: 0.008, 0.030 for red/yellow vegetables in CHNS and β = 0.004, 95% CI: 0.001, 0.007 for green leafy vegetables in HRS) were associated with slower cognitive decline in subsequent years. Moreover, rigorous sensitivity analyses confirmed the stability of the results. CONCLUSIONS Our findings support the potential beneficial roles of VF, especially cruciferous vegetables, green leafy vegetables, and red/yellow vegetables, in maintaining cognitive function and slowing cognitive decline in middle-aged and older adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The objective of this study was to examine the association between dietary diversity and sleep quality among Chinese middle-aged and older adults. METHODS The Lifestyle and Healthy Aging of Chinese Square Dancer Study is a prospective, community-based cohort study that enrolled participants aged 45 years and above from 2020 to 2021. Using the semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire to investigate the diets of study participants, and using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) to assess sleep quality. Dietary diversity was assessed using two scoring methods covering ten food groups and 66 food items, respectively: the dietary diversity score (DDS) and the food variety score (FVS). The higher scores of DDS and FVS indicated greater dietary diversity and higher dietary quality. Logistic regression analysis explored the associations between these scores and sleep quality. RESULTS A total of 2409 individuals with completed information on PSQI and FFQ were included in this study, of whom 767 (31.8%) had poor sleep quality. Participants with higher DDS were associated with an 18% lower odds of poor sleep quality compared to those with low DDS (OR = 0.82, 95% CI, 0.68-0.98). Participants in the highest quartile of the FVS had a 32% lower odds of poor sleep quality than those in the lowest quartile (OR = 0.68, 95% CI, 0.52-0.89). CONCLUSIONS There was a positive correlation between higher FVS and DDS with better sleep quality. Therefore, ensuring a diverse diet may be beneficial for maintaining good sleep quality among middle-aged and older adults.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The study's objective was to explore whether early time-restricted eating (eTRE) and late time-restricted eating (lTRE) have different impacts on intrahepatic fat and metabolic health among patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). METHODS This is an 8-week, randomized, parallel-arm, open-label trial. Forty eligible patients were randomly assigned to eTRE (eating between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.) or lTRE (eating between 12:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.). The primary outcome was the change of intrahepatic fat measured by magnetic resonance image-derived proton density fat fraction. Secondary outcomes included changes in weight, body composition, liver function, and cardiometabolic factors. RESULTS Forty participants who underwent randomization completed the trial (mean age: 38.25 years). The eTRE group had a -3.24% absolute reduction of intrahepatic fat (95% CI: -4.55% to -1.92%) and there was a -3.51% absolute reduction for the lTRE group (95% CI: -5.10% to -1.92%). Changes in intrahepatic fat were not statistically different between the two groups. Both the eTRE and lTRE groups had similar and significant reductions in weight, visceral fat, subcutaneous fat, liver enzymes, and glucose regulatory indicators. CONCLUSIONS Among patients with NAFLD, both eTRE and lTRE induced significant reductions in intrahepatic fat and improvements in body composition, liver function, and metabolic health with similar magnitude. These findings suggest that eTRE and lTRE are comparable and feasible strategies for NAFLD management.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Studies regarding the validity of the food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) and the food composition table (FCT) are limited in Asian countries. We aimed to evaluate the validity of a 64-item FFQ and different methods of constructing the FFQ FCTs for assessing dietary intakes of foods and nutrients among adults in eastern China. METHODS A total of 2325 participants (aged 56.2 ± 14.9 years, 51.6% female) from nine cities in Zhejiang province who completed a 64-item FFQ and 3-day 24-hour dietary recalls (24HRs) in 2015 were included. Eight FFQ FCTs were generated covering food items and specific weights estimated using professional knowledge, representative 24HRs data, or the Chinese FCT (CFCT). Energy-adjusted intakes of foods and nutrients were estimated by residual and energy density methods. Spearman correlation coefficients (SCCs) of intakes of 14 food groups and 17 nutrients between FFQ and 24HRs were calculated to evaluate the overall validity of FFQ. RESULTS The average intakes of most food groups and nutrients assessed with FFQ were higher than those assessed using the 24HRs. For the food groups, the averaged energy-adjusted (residual method) SCC between FFQ and 24HRs was 0.27, ranging from 0.14 (starch-rich beans) to 0.49 (aquatic products). For nutrient assessment, the weighted FCT (WFCT) performs the best, and the averaged energy-adjusted (residual method) SCC was 0.26, ranging from 0.16 (iron) to 0.37 (potassium). Similar correlations with 24HRs were observed when using other FFQ FCT in the calculation of nutrient intakes. CONCLUSION The 64-item Chinese FFQ and the WFCT were reasonably valid to assess the dietary intakes of certain foods and nutrients among adults in eastern China.

Abstract
Zein, curcumin (Cur), and ι-carrageenan (ιCar) were used to prepare core-shell biopolymer nanoparticles (Zein-Cur-ιCar). These nanoparticles consisted of a nutraceutical-loaded protein core (curcumin-loaded zein nanoparticles) and a gelled polysaccharide shell (calcium cross-linked ι-carrageenan). The size, charge, morphology, and interactions of the nanoparticles were characterized by dynamic light scattering, zeta-potential analysis, scanning electron microscopy, and Fourier Transform infrared analysis. Ionic bridging, electrostatic attraction, hydrogen bonding, and hydrophobic attraction were involved in particle formation. The high encapsulation efficiency (93.2%) and loading capacity (6.2%) indicated that curcumin was well encapsulated within nanoparticles with optimized compositions (zein:ι-carrageenan 100:40). These particles had relatively small diameters (351.8 nm) and effectively delayed the light and thermal degradation of curcumin. Moreover, the curcumin within the nanoparticles was released in a sustained manner under simulated gastrointestinal conditions, which may improve its oral bioavailability. In summary, calcium carrageenan-coated zein nanoparticles have potential for the encapsulation, protection, and controlled release of hydrophobic nutrients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Little is known regarding the association of interviewer-reported cognitive problems (ICP) with age-related cognitive decline. We aimed to investigate the independent associations of ICP and the combined associations of ICP and self-reported cognitive problems (SCP) with subsequent cognitive decline and dementia in two prospective cohort studies. METHODS We included 10,976 Chinese (age = 57.7 ± 8.7) and 40,499 European (age = 64.6 ± 9.4) adults without dementia from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) and the Survey of Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE). Self-rated memory (5-point scale) and interviewer-rated frequencies of asking for clarification (6-point scale) were used to define SCP and ICP (dichotomized). Outcomes included objective cognitive test scores (z-score transformation) and incident dementia. Generalized estimating equation models were performed to evaluate mean differences in objective cognitive decline. Logistic and Cox regression models were used to estimate the relative risk of dementia. Results from two cohorts were pooled using the random-effects models. RESULTS ICP was associated with faster cognitive decline in CHARLS (βCHARLS = -0.025 [-0.044, -0.006] z-score/year). ICP and SCP were also independently associated with higher risk of dementia in two cohorts (pooled relative risk for SCP = 1.73 [1.30, 2.29]; pooled relative risk for ICP = 1.40 [1.10, 1.79]). In the joint analysis, participants with coexistence of SCP and ICP had the fastest cognitive decline (βCHARLS = -0.051 [-0.080, -0.021]; βSHARE = -0.024 [-0.043, -0.004]; pooled β = -0.035 [-0.061, -0.009] z-score/year) and highest risk of dementia (ORCHARLS = 1.77 [1.42, 2.20]; HRSHARE = 2.94 [2.42, 3.59]; pooled relative risk = 2.29 [1.38, 3.77]). CONCLUSIONS The study suggested that interviewer-reported cognitive problems may be early indicators of cognitive decline and dementia in middle-aged and older adults. A combination of self- and interviewer-reported cognitive problems showed the strongest associations with cognitive decline and dementia.

Abstract
The main purpose of this study was to prepare zein-chondroitin sulfate (ZC) nanocomplex by anti-solvent co-precipitation, and to encapsulate, protect and controlled-release curcumin. As the proportion of chondroitin sulfate (CS) increased, the particle size, turbidity and zeta-potential of the ZC nanocomplexes all increased. When the mass ratio of zein and CS was 10:3, the ZC nanocomplex had small particle size (129 nm) and low polydispersity index (0.3). According to FTIR, FS, CD and XRD results, zein and CS were tightly bound by electrostatic attraction, hydrophobic effect and hydrogen bonding. The ZC nanocomplex was designed to encapsulate curcumin with high encapsulation efficiency (94.7%) and loading capacity (3.8%), and also enhanced the resistance of curcumin to light and thermal degradation by 2.9 and 2.4 times. It also exhibited controlled release capability during simulated gastrointestinal digestion. These results suggested the ZC nanocomplex is a good delivery vehicle to facilitate the application of curcumin.

Abstract
In the work, zein-yeast carboxymethyl glucan (ZY) particles were fabricated by a novel ultrasonic assisted anti-solvent precipitation (ASP) method, which was a good delivery system for resveratrol. The particle size and zeta-potential of ZY samples were detected by Zetasizer Pro analyzer, they gradually increased as the mass ratio of zein and yeast carboxymethyl glucan (YCG) changed from 10:1 to 10:5. The intermolecular interactions were investigated by zeta-potentiometric analyzer, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and fluorescence spectroscopy. Electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding and hydrophobic effects between zein and YCG molecules were identified as the main driving forces in the formation of ZY particles. The optimized ZY (10:3) binary particles were used as delivery system for encapsulating and protecting resveratrol. They had high encapsulation efficiency (85.4 %) and loading capacity (6.1 %), and increased the retention rate of resveratrol by 2.10 and 1.21 folds after exposure to light and heat conditions, effectively protect resveratrol against light and thermal degradation. These particles also delayed the release of resveratrol in simulated gastrointestinal digestion, which might improve its oral bioavailability. In conclusion, ZY binary particles could be regarded as a useful and promising delivery vehicle, which might contribute to the application of hydrophobic bioactive ingredients in functional foods.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Salt substitutes are edible salts that contain less sodium chloride owing to its partial substitution with other minerals, which serve as an important and effective intervention and public health strategy targeting hypertension and its secondary diseases, despite a small degree of controversy. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to identify the current salt substitute initiatives in various nations and intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) worldwide and summarize their types and characteristics. METHODS A scoping review was performed based on Arksey and O'Malley's framework and the latest guidance from the Joanna Briggs Institute. Searches were conducted on Google; government websites on food, health, and other related topics; PubMed; Web of Science; and Google Scholar from January 2022 to May 2022. Initiatives related to salt substitutes that were included in the study focused on the involvement of governments or IGOs through the publication of standards, actions, collaborations, funding, and so on. Data were extracted into Microsoft Excel (version 2019; Microsoft Corp) based on predefined items and analyzed using narrative synthesis and frequency count methods. RESULTS A total of 35 initiatives from 11 countries (of which 9 are high-income countries) and 3 IGOs were identified. We classified all salt substitute initiatives into 5 types, namely benefit-risk assessments and cautions; plans and actions; regulations and standards; labels; and food reformulation, cooperation with the food industry, and media. More than half (18/35, 51%) of the salt substitute initiatives were launched within the past 5 years. Except for regulations and standards, salt substitute initiatives are, in general, part of the salt reduction framework. No nation or IGO has yet reported on the monitoring and implications of the use of salt substitutes. CONCLUSIONS Despite the limited number of salt substitute initiatives worldwide at present, a review on the different types and characteristics of such initiatives could be helpful in providing a reference for policy makers and stakeholders. Given the great potential of salt substitutes in improving hypertension and stroke, we call on more nations to pay attention to these substitutes and propose salt substitute initiatives in line with their national conditions.

Abstract
Plant proteins are high-quality dietary components of food products. With the growing interest in sustainable and healthy food alternatives, plant proteins have gained significant attention as viable substitutes for animal-based proteins. Understanding the diversity of protein sources derived from plants, novel processing technology, and multiple applications is crucial for developing nutritious and sustainable plant protein-based products. This Review summarizes the natural sources of traditional and emerging plant proteins. The classifications, processing technologies, and applications of plant protein-based products in the food industry are explicitly elucidated. Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of plant protein-based food products are revealed. Strategies such as protein fortification and complementation to overcome these shortcomings are critically discussed. We also demonstrate several issues that need to be addressed in future development.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the association between plant-based diet indices and sleep quality in Chinese middle-aged and older adults. METHODS The study included 2424 participants aged 45 years and older. Dietary data were collected using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire, and sleep quality was assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scale. Plant-based diet was categorized based on 3 indices (score range, 17-85) covering 17 food groups: the overall plant-based diet index, healthful plant-based diet index, and unhealthful plant-based diet index. The associations between these plant-based diet indices and sleep quality were examined using logistic and linear regression analyses. RESULTS After controlling for sociodemographic, lifestyle, and multiple disease-related factors, participants in the highest quartile of the healthful plant-based diet index had 0.55 higher odds of better sleep quality (95% CI: 0.42, 0.72; Ptrend< .001). In contrast, participants in the highest quartile of the unhealthful plant-based diet index had 2.03 higher odds of poor sleep quality (95% CI: 1.51, 2.72; Ptrend< .001). In addition, plant-based diet index and healthful plant-based diet index were inversely associated with Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores, while unhealthful plant-based diet index and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index scores were positively associated. CONCLUSIONS We found unhealthy plant-based diets are significantly associated with poor sleep quality. Adherence to overall plant-based diets, especially healthy plant-based diets, was positively associated with optimal sleep quality.

Abstract
Reactive oxygen species (ROS)-involved tumor therapeutic strategy, chemodynamic therapy (CDT), has attracted extensive research interest in the scientific community. However, the therapeutic effect of CDT is insufficient and unsustainable owing to the limited endogenous H2 O2 level in the tumor microenvironment. Here, peroxidase (POD)-like RuTe2 nanozyme with the immobilization of glucose oxidase (GOx) and allochroic 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) molecule have been synthesized to construct RuTe2 -GOx-TMB nanoreactors (RGT NRs) as cascade reaction systems for tumor-specific and self-replenishing cancer therapy. GOx in sequential nanocatalysts can effectively deplete glucose in tumor cells. Meanwhile, a sustainable supply of H2 O2 for subsequent Fenton-like reactions catalyzed by RuTe2 nanozyme is achieved in response to the mild acidic tumor microenvironment. Through this cascade reaction, highly toxic hydroxyl radicals (·OH) are produced, which can further oxidize TMB to trigger tumor-specific "turn-on" photothermal therapy (PTT). In addition, PTT and massive ROS can stimulate the tumor immune microenvironment and activate the systematic anti-tumor immune responses, exerting a notable effect on hindering tumor recurrence and metastasis. This study paves a promising paradigm for synergistic starvation therapy, PTT, and CDT cancer therapy with high efficiency.

Abstract
Background The evidence concerning dietary diversity and cognitive function remains insufficient. Objective To investigate the association of dietary diversity score (DDS) with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and cognitive performance in different domains. Methods Data from The Lifestyle and Healthy Aging of Chinese Square Dancer Study was used in this study. DDS was constructed based on the intake frequencies of 9 food groups assessed by a validated food frequency questionnaire. MCI was diagnosed by Petersen's criteria. A neuropsychological test battery was used to assess the performance on cognitive domains, and test scores were standardized to Z scores. Multiple linear regression models and logistic regression models were used to estimate the β and odds ratios and their 95% CIs, respectively. Results Among 1,982 participants, the mean (SD) age was 63.37 (5.00) years, 1,778 (89.71%) were women, and 279 (14.08%) had MCI. Compared to the DDS quartile (0, 6], the multivariable-adjusted odds ratios (95% CI) were 0.74 (0.48, 1.15) for DDS quartile (6, 7], 0.65 (0.43, 0.97) for DDS quartile (7, 8], and 0.55 (0.37, 0.84) for DDS quartile (8, 9]. Furthermore, higher DDS was positively associated with better performance of cognitive domains, including global cognitive function (β= 0.20, 95% CI: 0.12, 0.30), episodic memory (β= 0.21, 95% CI: 0.07, 0.35), attention (β= 0.15, 95% CI: 0.03, 0.26), language fluency (β= 0.24, 95% CI: 0.10, 0.38), and executive function (β= - 0.24, 95% CI: - 0.38, - 0.10). Conclusions This study indicated that higher DDS was associated with better cognitive function among middle-aged and older Chinese people.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diets rich in plant-based foods are associated with lower risks of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), while the prospective evidence is limited. We aimed to examine longitudinal associations of plant-based diets and genetic susceptibility with NAFLD risk. METHODS This longitudinal cohort study included 159,222 participants (58.0 ± 8.0 years old, 55.7% female) free of NAFLD in the UK Biobank. We calculated the overall plant-based diet index (PDI), the healthful plant-based diet index (hPDI), and the unhealthful plant-based diet index (uPDI). New-onset NAFLD was the primary outcome. The weighted polygenic risk score was calculated based on risk variants associated with NAFLD. Hazard ratios (HR) and 95% confidential intervals (CI) were estimated by Cox proportional hazards model. Magnetic resonance imaging-derived proton density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) measured liver fat content in a subsample of 20,692 participants (57.5 ± 7.4 years old, 52.6% female) was the secondary outcome. The associations between plant-based diet indices and MRI-PDFF were evaluated using generalized linear models. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 9.5 years, 1541 new-onset NAFLD cases were documented. Compared to the lowest quintile, multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) of NAFLD in the highest quintile were 0.78 (95% confidential intervals [CI], 0.66-0.93, p-trend =0.02), 0.74 (95% CI, 0.62-0.87, p-trend <0.0001), and 1.24 (95% CI, 1.05-1.46, p-trend = 0.02) for overall PDI, hPDI, and uPDI, respectively. For liver fat content, higher overall PDI and hPDI were associated with lower MRI-PDFF, while higher uPDI was associated with higher liver fat content. We observed a significant interaction between hPDI and PRS (p-interaction =0.03), and the NAFLD risk was lowest among participants with the highest hPDI and low genetic risk. CONCLUSIONS Higher intake of plant-based diets especially healthful plant-based diets was associated with lower NAFLD risk and liver fat content regardless of genetic susceptibility, whereas an unhealthful plant-based diet was associated with higher NAFLD risk and intrahepatic steatosis. These results suggest that the quality of plant-based foods should be highlighted when adopting a plant-based diet.

Abstract
Objectives: Bioactive compounds in mushrooms may protect the brain from neurodegeneration by inhibiting the production of amyloid-β and playing an antioxidant role. This study aimed at examining the associations of mushroom consumption with cognitive function and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) among middle-aged and older adults in China. Design: A cross-sectional study. Setting and participants: This study was conducted in seven cities in China and included 2203 middle-aged and older adults. Methods: Data on mushroom consumption were collected using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire. Cognitive function was evaluated by the Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT), Verbal Fluency Test (VFT), Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DSST), and Trail Making Test-B (TMT-B). The composite z score was used to reflect global cognition. MCI was determined according to the Petersen criteria. Multiple linear regression and logistic regression were used to examine the relationship between mushroom consumption and cognitive performance. Results: This study included 2203 participants aged 55 years and above (mean age = 63.43 years). After controlling demographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, other dietary factors, and history of chronic disease, higher mushroom consumption was associated with better global cognition. Compared to the lowest quartile (Q1, 0-4.00 g day-1), the βs (95% confidence intervals, 95% CIs) were 0.10 (0.03, 0.18) for Q2 (4.01-10.42 g day-1), 0.13 (0.06, 0.20) for Q3 (10.43-20.84 g day-1), and 0.13 (0.06, 0.20) for Q4 (>20.84 g day-1). The higher mushroom consumption was positively related to better performance in DSST and TMT-B (P-values < 0.05). A 10 g day-1 increment in mushroom consumption was related to 12% lower odds of MCI (odds ratio = 0.88, 95% CI: 0.80-0.97). Conclusions: Higher mushroom consumption was positively related to better cognitive function and associated with lower odds of MCI. Further studies are needed to replicate our findings in other populations and determine the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the association between magnesium levels and the odds of mild cognitive impairment (MCI). METHOD In this cross-sectional study of 1006 participants (≥55 years) from China, whole-blood magnesium concentration was measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. MCI was diagnosed according to Petersen criteria using self-reported cognitive decline and a neuropsychological test battery, including the trail-making test-part B (TMT-B), auditory verbal learning test (AVLT), digit symbol substitution test (DSST), and verbal fluency test (VFT), which measured the assessment of executive, memory, attention, and language functioning, respectively. A logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between magnesium levels and MCI, and linear regression analyses were performed for the association between magnesium and cognitive function score. RESULTS The MCI group had a significantly lower concentration of magnesium compared to the Non-MCI group (34.7 ± 9.8 vs. 36.7 ± 9.7, p = 0.017). After adjusting for covariates, a negative association was observed between magnesium levels and MCI. Compared with the lowest quartile (median: 25.4 mg/L), the odds ratio for MCI was 0.53 (95%CI 0.32-0.90) for the highest quartile (median: 48.4 mg/L), and there was an inverse dose-response relationship (p for trend = 0.009). In addition, higher levels of magnesium were positively correlated with VFT scores (β = 0.37, 95%CI = 0.11-0.62) and DSST scores (β = 0.50, 95%CI = 0.01~0.98) and negatively correlated with TMT scores (β = -1.73, 95%CI = -3.40--0.07) in the middle-aged and older adults. CONCLUSIONS Whole-blood magnesium was inversely associated with the occurrence of MCI and positively associated with performance in neuropsychological tests assessing attention, executive, and language ability in middle-aged and older adults.

Abstract
Background Procyanidins have antioxidative properties that may protect against age-related brain oxidative stress. Previous studies indicated that procyanidin-rich foods could improve cognitive function and prevent neurodegenerative diseases. This study hypothesized that grape seed procyanidins extract (GSPE) would have a favorable effect on cognitive function in elderly people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Methods A community-based, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial was conducted. Participants aged 60 years or older with MCI were randomly assigned into the GSPE group (n = 35, 320 mg/d) or placebo group (n = 36), and received capsules for 6 months. Cognitive function was assessed using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Scale (MoCA). The change in MoCA scores between groups were tested by the time ✕ treatment interaction in mixed-design ANOVA. Results After 6 months of intervention, the MoCA score was higher than the baseline both in the intervention group and placebo control group, while the there was no significant difference for mean change in MoCA score from baseline between the intervention group and the placebo group (2.35 ± 3.20 vs. 1.28 ± 2.93, P = 0.192). Conclusions Present study showed that 6-month supplementation with GSPE did not significantly improve cognitive function in subjects with MCI. Further investigations regarding the longer-term intervention effect of procyanidins extract on mild or moderate cognitive disorders are needed.

Abstract
Small extracellular vesicle (sEV) is an emerging source of potential biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in sEV is not well understood. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of sEV-derived miRNAs in AD using small RNA sequencing and coexpression network analysis. We examined a total of 158 samples, including 48 from AD patients, 48 from patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and 62 from healthy controls. We identified an miRNA network module (M1) that was strongly linked to neural function and showed the strongest association with AD diagnosis and cognitive impairment. The expression of miRNAs in the module was decreased in both AD and MCI patients compared to controls. Conservation analysis revealed that M1 was highly preserved in the healthy control group but dysfunctional in the AD and MCI groups, suggesting that changes in the expression of miRNAs in this module may be an early response to cognitive decline prior to the appearance of AD pathology. We further validated the expression levels of the hub miRNAs in M1 in an independent population. The functional enrichment analysis showed that 4 hub miRNAs might interact with a GDF11-centered network and play a critical role in the neuropathology of AD. In summary, our study provides new insights into the role of sEV-derived miRNAs in AD and suggests that M1 miRNAs may serve as potential biomarkers for the early diagnosis and monitoring of AD.

Abstract
Importance Cross-sectional evidence implicates high prevalent frailty in patients with Parkinson disease (PD), whereas the longitudinal association remains unknown. Objectives To examine the longitudinal association of the frailty phenotype with the development of PD and to explore the modification role of genetic risk of PD in such an association. Design, Setting, and Participants This prospective cohort study launched in 2006 to 2010 with a follow-up of 12 years. Data were analyzed from March 2022 to December 2022. The UK Biobank recruited over 500 000 middle-aged and older adults from 22 assessment centers across the United Kingdom. Participants who were younger than 40 years (n = 101), diagnosed with dementia or PD at baseline, and developed dementia, PD, or died within 2 years from baseline were excluded (n = 4050). Participants who had no genetic data or mismatch between genetic sex and reported gender (n = 15 350), were not of self-reported British White descent (n = 27 850), and had no data for frailty assessment (n = 100 450) or any covariates were also excluded (n = 39 706). The final analysis included 314 998 participants. Exposures The physical frailty was assessed by the Fried criteria's frailty phenotype through 5 domains, ie, weight loss, exhaustion, low physical activity, slow walking speed, and low grip strength. The polygenic risk score (PRS) for PD comprised 44 single-nucleotide variants. Main Outcomes and Measures New-onset PD was identified through the hospital admission electronic health records and death register. Results Among 314 998 participants (mean age, 56.1 years; 49.1% male), 1916 new-onset PD cases were documented. Compared with nonfrailty, the hazard ratio (HR) of incident PD in prefrailty and frailty was 1.26 (95% CI, 1.15-1.39) and 1.87 (95% CI, 1.53-2.28), respectively, and the absolute rate difference per 100 000 person-years was 1.6 (95% CI, 1.0-2.3) for prefrailty and 5.1 (95% CI, 2.9-7.3) for frailty. Exhaustion (HR, 1.41; 95% CI, 1.22-1.62), slow gait speed (HR, 1.32; 95% CI, 1.13-1.54), low grip strength (HR, 1.27; 95% CI, 1.13-1.43), and low physical activity (HR, 1.12; 95% CI, 1.00-1.25) were associated with incident PD. A significant interaction between frailty and PRS on PD was found and the highest hazard was observed in participants with frailty and high genetic risk. Conclusions and Relevance Physical prefrailty and frailty were associated with incident PD independent of sociodemographic factors, lifestyles, multiple morbidities, and genetic background. These findings may have implications for the assessment and management of frailty for PD prevention.

Abstract
AbstractIntermittent fasting (IF) is a dietary strategy that involves alternating periods of abstention from calorie consumption with periods of ad libitum food intake and has been shown to have beneficial effects in many ways. Recent studies have shown that IF attenuates neurodegeneration and improves cognitive decline, enhances functional recovery after stroke as well as attenuates the pathological and clinical features of epilepsy in animal models. Furthermore, IF induced several molecular and cellular adaptations in neurons that overall enhanced cellular stress resistance, synaptic plasticity, and neurogenesis. In this review, the beneficial effects of IF on central neurological disorders are discussed. The information summarised in this review can be used to help contextualise existing research and better guide the development of future IF interventions.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate the associations of body weight change (BWC) and body weight variability (BWV) with changes in cognitive function. METHODS In 10,340 Health and Retirement Study participants (mean age: 68.0 years), body weight was reported biennially from 1993/1994 to 2016, and cognitive function was measured biennially from 1998 to 2016. We calculated BWC and BWV as the slope and root-mean-square error by regressing body weight on time for each individual. BWC was categorized by quintiles (Q): stable weight (Q2 to Q4), weight loss (Q1), and weight gain (Q5). BWV was categorized by tertiles. We used linear mixed regression models to assess associations with cognitive change. RESULTS Compared with stable weight (median: 0 kg/y), weight loss (median: -1.3 kg/y) predicted faster cognitive decline as demonstrated by mean difference of -0.023 (95% CI: -0.027 to -0.019) in cognitive change z score per year, whereas weight gain (median: 1 kg/y) was related to slower cognitive decline (β = 0.006; 95% CI: 0.003 to 0.009). Larger BWV was also associated with faster cognitive decline (β comparing the top with bottom tertile = -0.003; 95% CI: -0.006 to -0.0002). Similar associations were observed for episodic and working memory. CONCLUSIONS Weight loss and large BWV over a long time independently predicted faster cognitive decline in middle-aged and older adults, underscoring the importance of long-term dynamic body weight monitoring.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous dietary studies and current dietary guidelines have mainly focused on dietary intake and food patterns. Little is known about the association between eating behaviors such as meal frequency, skipping and intervals, and mortality. OBJECTIVE The objective was to examine the associations of meal frequency, skipping, and intervals with all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality. DESIGN This was a prospective study. PARTICIPANTS/SETTING A total of 24,011 adults (aged ≥40 years) who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999-2014 were included in this study. Eating behaviors were assessed using 24-hour recall. Death and underlying causes of death were ascertained by linkage to death records through December 31, 2015. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The outcomes were all-cause and CVD mortality. STATISTICAL ANALYSES PERFORMED Multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) of all-cause and CVD mortality. RESULTS During 185,398 person-years of follow-up period, 4,175 deaths occurred, including 878 cardiovascular deaths. Most participants ate three meals per day. Compared with participants eating three meals per day, the multivariable-adjusted HRs for participants eating one meal per day were 1.30 (95% CI 1.03 to 1.64) for all-cause mortality, and 1.83 (95% CI 1.26 to 2.65) for CVD mortality. Participants who skipped breakfast have multivariable-adjusted HRs 1.40 (95% CI 1.09 to 1.78) for CVD mortality compared with those who did not. The multivariable-adjusted HRs for all-cause mortality were 1.12 (95% CI 1.01 to 1.24) for skipping lunch and 1.16 (95% CI 1.02 to 1.32) for skipping dinner compared with those who did not. Among participants eating three meals per day, the multivariable-adjusted HR for participants with an average interval of ≤4.5 hours in two adjacent meals was 1.17 (95% CI 1.04 to 1.32) for all-cause mortality, comparing with those having a meal interval of 4.6 to 5.5 hours. CONCLUSIONS In this large, prospective study of US adults aged 40 years or older, eating one meal per day was associated with an increased risk of all-cause and CVD mortality. Skipping breakfast was associated with increased risk of CVD mortality, whereas skipping lunch or dinner was associated with increased risk of all-cause mortality. Among participant with three meals per day, a meal interval of ≤4.5 hours in two adjacent meals was associated with higher all-cause mortality.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Diminished brain insulin sensitivity is associated with reduced cognitive function. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is known to maintain normal brain function. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to determine whether DHA impacts hippocampal insulin sensitivity and cognitive function in aged rats fed a high-fat diet (HFD). METHODS Eight-month-old female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into three groups (n = 50 each). Rats in the aged group, HFD group, and DHA treatment group received standard diet (10 kcal% fat), HFD (45 kcal% fat), and DHA-enriched HFD (45 kcal% fat, 1% DHA, W/W) for 10 months, respectively. Four-month-old female rats (n = 40) that received a standard diet served as young controls. Neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, amyloid formation, and tau phosphorylation in the hippocampus, as well as systemic glucose homeostasis and cognitive function, were tested. RESULTS DHA treatment relieved a block in the insulin signaling pathway and consequently protected aged rats against HFD-induced hippocampal insulin resistance. The beneficial effects were explained by a DHA-induced decrease in systemic glucose homeostasis dysregulation, hippocampal neuroinflammation and oxidative stress. In addition, DHA treatment broke the reciprocal cycle of hippocampal insulin resistance, Aβ burden, and tau hyperphosphorylation. Importantly, treatment of model rats with DHA significantly increased their cognitive capacity, as evidenced by their increased hippocampal-dependent learning and memory, restored neuron morphology, enhanced cholinergic activity, and activated cyclic AMP-response element-binding protein. CONCLUSION DHA improves cognitive function by enhancing hippocampal insulin sensitivity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an age-related neurodegenerative disease and featured by cognitive impairment. Procyanidins have been shown to have a potential protective effect against neurodegenerative diseases, but the underlying mechanism is not comprehensive enough. OBJECTIVE To further investigate the effects of procyanidins from lotus seedpod (LSPC) on cognition in AD. METHODS The APP/PS1 transgenic mice were administered with LSPC (100 mg/kg body weight) for five months. The Morris water maze test was used to assess learning and memory function, the long-term potentiation (LTP) was measured and the expression of Aβ, pCREB/CREB and BDNF were quantified by western blot. RESULTS LSPC significantly ameliorated cognitive dysfunction, reduced Aβ deposition and reversed remarkable reduction of the phosphorylation of CREB and the expression of BDNF, and then enhanced the effect of LTP in APP/PS1 mice. CONCLUSION These results revealed that LSPC could ameliorate cognitive impairment through CREB-BDNF pathway mediated the enhancement of LTP in APP/PS1 transgenic mice.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate whether serum uric acid (SUA) level is associated with all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality among individuals with diabetes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS In this prospective cohort study, we included patients with diabetes from the U.S. National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2018. Mortality and underlying causes of death were ascertained by linkage to national death records through 31 December 2019. Weighted Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to evaluate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs for all-cause and CVD mortality. We also performed a meta-analysis of available cohort studies to combine the association between SUA level and mortality in diabetes. RESULTS Among the 7,101 patients with diabetes from NHANES 1999-2018, the weighted mean of SUA level was 5.7 mg/dL. During 57,926 person-years of follow-up, 1,900 deaths (n = 674 deaths from CVD) occurred. In the fully adjusted model, when compared with patients with diabetes in the lowest SUA quintile, those in the highest SUA quintile had the HRs (95% CIs) of 1.28 (1.03, 1.58) for all-cause mortality and 1.41 (1.03, 1.94) for CVD mortality. We included 13 cohort studies in the meta-analysis and found that the pooled HRs (95% CIs) were 1.08 (1.05, 1.11) for all-cause mortality and 1.05 (1.03, 1.06) for CVD mortality per 1 mg/dL increment of SUA level in patients with diabetes. CONCLUSIONS This study indicated that higher SUA levels were associated with increased risks of all-cause and CVD mortality in diabetes. Interventional studies are needed to elucidate the health effect of treatments to lower SUA levels.

Abstract
BACKGROUND longitudinal evidence concerning frailty phenotype and the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) remained insufficient, and whether CVD preventive strategies exert low CVD risk on frail adults is unclear. OBJECTIVES we aimed to prospectively evaluate the association of frailty phenotype, adherence to ideal cardiovascular health (CVH) and their joint associations with the risk of CVD. METHODS a total of 314,093 participants from the UK Biobank were included. Frailty phenotype was assessed according to the five criteria of Fried et al.: weight loss, exhaustion, low physical activity, slow gait speed and low grip strength. CVH included four core health behaviours (smoking, physical activity and diet) and three health factors (weight, cholesterol, blood pressure and glycaemic control). The outcome of interest was incident CVD, including coronary heart disease, heart failure and stroke. RESULTS compared with the non-frail people whose incident rate of overall CVD was 6.54 per 1,000 person-years, the absolute rate difference per 1,000 person-years was 1.67 (95% confidence interval, CI: 1.33, 2.02) for pre-frail and 5.00 (95% CI: 4.03, 5.97) for frail. The ideal CVH was significantly associated with a lower risk of all CVD outcomes. For the joint association of frailty and CVH level with incident CVD, the highest risk was observed among frailty accompanied by poor CVH with an HR of 2.92 (95% CI: 2.68, 3.18). CONCLUSIONS our findings indicate that physical frailty is associated with CVD incidence. Improving CVH was significantly associated with a considerable decrease in CVD risk, and such cardiovascular benefits remain for the frailty population.

Abstract
Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), an emerging environmental pollutant, is reported to cause neurotoxicity in animals and humans, but its underlying mechanisms are still unclear. We used in vivo models to investigate the effects of PFOS on cognition-related behaviors and related mechanisms. After 45 days of intragastric administration of PFOS (2 mg/kg or 8 mg/kg) in 7-week-old C57BL/6 mice, muscle strength, cognitive function and anxiety-like behavior were evaluated by a series of behavioral tests. The underling mechanisms of PFOS on impaired behaviors were evaluated by HE/Nissl staining, electron microscopy observation and western blot analysis. The results indicated that PFOS-exposed mice exhibited significant cognitive impairment, anxiety, neuronal degeneration and the abnormities of synaptic ultrastructure in the cortex and hippocampus. Western blot analysis indicated that PFOS exposure increased microtubule-associated protein light chain 3 (LC3) and decreased p62 protein levels, which may be associated with activation of autophagy leading to neuron damage. In summary, our results suggest that chronic exposure to PFOS adversely affects cognitive-related behavior in mice. These findings provide new mechanistic insights into PFOS-induced neurotoxicity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have revealed that sodium-restricted diet intervention significantly decreased apnea frequency among patients with sleep apnea. However, the longitudinal association between the habit of adding salt to foods and sleep apnea in general populations is uncertain. METHODS The UK Biobank cohort study includes more than 500,000 participants aged 40 to 69 across the United Kingdom from 2006 to 2010. The frequency of adding salt to foods was collected through a touch screen questionnaire. Incident sleep apnea was ascertained by hospital inpatient records, death registries, primary care, and self-reported diagnosis. The association between the habit of adding salt to foods and incident sleep apnea was estimated using Cox proportional hazard regression models. RESULTS Among the 488,196 participants (mean age 56.5 years; 55.0% female) in this study. During a median follow-up of 12.3 years, 6394 sleep apnea events occurred. Compared to participants who never/rarely added salt to foods, those who sometimes, usually, and always added salt to foods had an 11% (hazard ratio [HR] 1.11, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.04 to 1.17), 15% (HR 1.15, 95% CI: 1.07 to 1.24), and 24% (HR 1.24, 95% CI: 1.12 to 1.37) higher risk for incident sleep apnea, respectively. CONCLUSIONS In this large prospective study, the habit of adding salt to foods was associated with a higher risk of incident sleep apnea. The findings support the benefits of a salt reduction program in preventing sleep apnea.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D plays an essential role in immune responses to infections. However, the association between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and respiratory infection remains unclear. OBJECTIVES The current study aimed to examine the association between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and respiratory infection among the United States adults. METHODS This cross-sectional study used data from the NHANES 2001-2014. Serum 25(OH)D concentrations were measured by radioimmunoassay or liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry and were classified as ≥75.0 nmol/L (sufficiency), 50.0-74.9 nmol/L (insufficiency), 30.0-49.9 nmol/L (moderate deficiency), and <30 nmol/L (severe deficiency). The respiratory infections included self-reported head or chest cold as well as influenza, pneumonia, or ear infection within the last 30 d. The associations between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and respiratory infections were examined using weighted logistic regression models. Data are presented as ORs and 95% CIs. RESULTS This study included 31,466 United States adults ≥20 y of age (47.1 y, 55.5% women) with a mean serum 25(OH)D concentration of 66.2 nmol/L. After adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, season of examination, lifestyle and dietary factors, and body mass index, compared with participants with a serum 25(OH)D concentration ≥75.0 nmol/L, those with a serum 25(OH)D concentration <30 nmol/L had higher risk of head or chest cold (OR: 1.17; 95% CI: 1.01, 1.36) and other respiratory diseases, including influenza, pneumonia, and ear infections (OR: 1.84; 95% CI: 1.35, 2.51). In the stratification analyses, lower serum 25(OH)D concentrations were associated with a higher risk of head or chest cold in obese adults but not in nonobese adults. CONCLUSIONS Serum 25(OH)D concentrations are inversely associated with respiratory infection occurrence among United States adults. This finding may shed light on the protective effect of vitamin D on the respiratory health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The consistent definition of sarcopenic obesity (SO) is limited, its association with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) has not been clarified. OBJECTIVE This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and agreement of SO using different definitions and the association between SO and MCI. METHODS SO was diagnosed by the co-existence of sarcopenia defined by the Asia Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) and obesity by body mass index (BMI), visceral fat area (VFA), waist circumference (WC), or body fat percentage (BF%). Cohen's kappa was used to assess the agreement between the different definitions. The association between SO and MCI was assessed using multivariable logistic regression. RESULTS Among 2,451 participants, the prevalence of SO ranged from 1.7% to 8.0% under different definitions. SO defined by AWGS and BMI (AWGS+BMI) showed fair agreements with the other three criteria (κ ranged from 0.334 to 0.359). The other criteria showed good agreements with each other. The κ statistics were 0.882 for AWGS+VFA and AWGS+BF%, 0.852 for AWGS+VFA and AWGS+WC, and 0.804 for AWGS+BF% and AWGS+WC, respectively. When using different diagnoses of SO, compared with the health group, the adjusted ORs of MCI for SO were 1.96 (95% CI: 1.29-2.99, SO: AWGS+WC), 1.75 (95% CI: 1.14-2.68, SO: AWGS+VFA), 1.94 (95% CI: 1.29-2.93, SO: AWGS+BF%), and 1.45 (95% CI: 0.67-3.12, SO: AWGS+BMI), respectively. CONCLUSION Using different obesity indicators combined with AWGS to diagnose SO, BMI had lower prevalence and agreement compared with other three indicators. SO was associated with MCI under different methods (WC, VFA, or BF%).

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diet quality in early childhood has a long-term impact on health outcomes. However, there are scarce dietary indexes for Chinese preschool children, and the existing indexes had limited validity and reliability. This study thus aimed to develop a dietary index for preschool children based on the Chinese Dietary Guideline and Chinese Dietary Reference Intakes and to assess their overall diet quality using the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS). METHODS The Chinese Preschooler Dietary Index (CPDI) included 11 components, covering 9 food group components and two nutrient components. The total scores of CPDI ranged from 0 to 90, with a higher score indicating greater diet quality. This study assessed the diet quality of 1742 preschoolers aged two to five years old from CHNS using the CPDI. Dietary intake data were obtained using three-day 24-h diet recalls, and sociodemographic information was also collected. Cochran-Mantel-Haensel (CMH) test was used to explore the association between demographic and CPDI total scores. The principal component analysis, correlation analysis and Cronbach's alpha were used to evaluate the relative reliability and validity of the CPDI. Finally, a stepwise multiple regression analysis was performed to explore potential influencing factors of CPDI. RESULTS Among the 1742 CHNS preschool children, more than 70% resided in rural areas and 41.2% of the sample were raised in a low-income family. The mean CPDI score of the preschoolers was 38.8 ± 12.9. Higher diet scores were correlated with higher energy and nutrient intake. Children with higher age (β = 0.93, SE = 0.26, P = 0.0003), raised in a home with higher household income (β = 3.11, SE = 0.27, P < 0.0001) or living in urban areas (β = -4.44, SE = 0.66, P < 0.0001) were associated with higher CPDI scores. CONCLUSIONS The CPDI is useful in evaluating the diet quality of preschool children. Based on the CPDI, the diet quality of Chinese preschoolers needs to be improved, especially in rural areas.

Abstract
Berberine (Ber) is easy to synthesize and has a variety of biological and pharmacological activities. At present, the existing studies on berberine have focused predominantly on its antibacterial activity; its herbicidal activity is rarely reported. In addition, there are a number of preparations of berberine, which are not enough to solve its shortcomings of low solubility and biological activity and the difficult storage of berberine. Here, berberine was combined with carbon dots to obtain carbon dots-berberine (CDs-Ber) nano formulation. The fluorescence quenching results showed that the CDs-Ber nano drug delivery system was successfully constructed, and the fluorescence quenching mechanism of the two was static quenching. The bioassay results showed that CDs had no adverse effects on the growth of barnyard grass (Echinochloa crus-galli) and redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus), and had high biocompatibility. Berberine and CDs-Ber predominantly affected the root growth of barnyard grass and redroot pigweed and could enhance the growth inhibition effect on weeds, to some extent. The results of the protective enzyme system showed that both berberine and CDs-Ber could increase the activities of Superoxide dismutase (SOD), Peroxidase (POD), and Catalase (CAT) in barnyard grass, and CDs-Ber had a stronger stress effect on barnyard grass than berberine. The determination of the number of bacterial communities in the soil after the berberine and CDs-Ber treatments showed that there was no significant difference in the effects of the two, indicating that CDs-Ber would not have more negative impacts on the environment. The CDs-Ber nano formulation improved the biological activity of berberine, enhanced the herbicidal effect, and was relatively safe for soil colonies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adding salt at the table is a prevalent eating habit, but its long-term relationship with cardiovascular disease (CVD) and all-cause mortality remains unclear. We evaluated the associations of adding salt at the table with the risk of incident CVD and all-cause mortality. METHODS Among 413,109 middle- and old-aged adults without cancer or CVD, all participants reported the frequency of adding salt at the table at baseline. The associations between adding salt at the table and incident CVD (the composite endpoint of coronary heart disease, stroke, heart failure, and CVD deaths) and all-cause mortality were investigated using Cox proportional hazards models. RESULTS Of the study population, the mean age was 55.8 years and 45.5% were men; 44.4% reported adding salt at the table; 4.8% reported always adding salt at the table. During a median follow-up of 12 years, there were 37,091 incident CVD cases and 21,293 all-cause deaths. After adjustment for demographic, lifestyle, and cardiometabolic risk factors, the multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) for participants who always added salt at the table versus never/rarely added salt at the table were 1.21 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.16-1.26) for CVD, 1.19 (95%CI: 1.05-1.35) for CVD mortality, and 1.22 (95%CI: 1.16-1.29) for all-cause mortality, respectively. CONCLUSIONS In this prospective cohort study, a higher frequency of adding salt at the table was associated with a greater risk of incident CVD and mortality. Our findings support the benefits of restricting the habit of adding salt at the table in promoting cardiovascular health.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to examine the relationship between social support and its sub-domains and cognitive performance, and the association with cognitive impairment among older adults in China. Design A cross-sectional study. Setting and participants We included 865 community-based individuals aged 65 and above from Hubei province, China. Methods The level of social support was evaluated using the social support rating scale (SSRC). The Mini-Mental State Examination was adopted to assess cognitive function, and its cut-offs were used to determine cognitive impairment among the participants. Multiple linear regression models and logistic regression models were used to estimate the β and odds ratios (ORs) and their 95% CIs, respectively. Results The participants were divided into quartiles 1-4 (Q1-Q4), according to the total scores of SSRC. After adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, and history of diseases, for MMSE scores, compared to these in Q1, the β of Q2-Q4 were -0.22 (-0.88, 0.43), 0.29 (-0.35, 0.94), and 0.86 (0.19, 1.53), respectively; For cognitive impairment, the ORs of Q2-Q4 were 1.21 (0.80, 1.82), 0.62 (0.40, 0.94), and 0.50 (0.32, 0.80), respectively. Considering SSRC scores as the continuous variable, per 1-unit increase, the β was 0.05 (0.02, 0.09) for the cognitive score, and the OR was 0.95 (0.92, 0.98) for cognitive impairment. In addition, higher levels of both subjective support and support utilization were related to better MMSE performance and lower risks of cognitive impairment. Conclusion and implications Among the older adults in China, as expected, there is a positive relationship between social support and cognitive performance, and high levels of social support, particularly in support utilization, were related to low risks of cognitive impairment. More social support should be provided in this population to improve cognitive function and reduce the risks of cognitive impairment.

Abstract
Mushrooms and algae are important sources of dietary bioactive compounds, but their associations with mortality remain unclear. We examined the association of mushrooms and algae consumption with subsequent risk of all-cause mortality among older adults. This study included 13,156 older adults aged 65 years and above in the Chinese Longitudinal Healthy Longevity Survey (2008–2018). Consumption of mushrooms and algae at baseline and age of 60 were assessed using a simplified food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). We used Cox proportional hazards models to estimate the hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). During 74,976 person-years of follow-up, a total of 8937 death cases were documented. After adjustment for demographic, lifestyle, and other dietary factors, participants who consumed mushrooms and algae at least once per week had a lower risk of all-cause mortality than rare consumers (0–1 time per year) (HR = 0.86; 95% CI: 0.80–0.93). Compared to participants with rare intake at both age 60 and the study baseline (average age of 87), those who maintained regular consumptions over time had the lowest hazard of mortality (HR = 0.86; 95% CI: 0.76–0.98). Our findings supported the potential beneficial role of long-term consumption of mushrooms and algae in reducing all-cause mortality among older adults. Further studies are warranted to evaluate the health benefit for longevity of specific types of mushrooms and algae.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To assess the association of depression and anxiety with clinical outcomes and laboratory markers among hospitalized patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). METHODS A prospective cohort study in Wuhan, China was conducted in 205 adult hospitalized patients with a diagnosis of moderate coronavirus disease from admission through discharge or death. Anxiety and depression were assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The primary outcome was the incidence of severe or critical COVID-19, and the secondary outcomes were increased length of hospital stay and altered laboratory markers during follow up. RESULTS Among the 205 hospitalized patients (mean age 58 years; 51.7% male), 25 (12.2%) developed severe or critical COVID-19. According to the HADS scores, 51 (24.9%) and 92 (44.9%) of participants presented with clinically significant anxiety and depression, respectively. Using multi-variable adjusted Cox regression analysis, the adjusted hazard ratio of developing severe or critical COVID-19 associated with anxiety and depression was 1.55 (95% CI: 0.63, 3.80) and 4.28 (95% CI: 1.20, 15.30), respectively. The risk of developing severe or critical COVID-19 with both anxiety and depression was more than four times higher than in patients without anxiety or depression (HR, 4.05; 95% CI: 1.02, 16.00). In addition, both the trends of depression and anxiety were positively associated with a prolonged duration of hospitalization, and immune response was significantly decreased in patients with depression than those without. CONCLUSIONS In patients having coronavirus disease, depression was associated with worse clinical outcomes. These findings highlight the importance of prevention and management of mental health problems in confronting the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate the association between adherence to healthy dietary patterns, such as Mediterranean dietary pattern(MED), dietary approaches to stop hypertension(DASH), Mediterranean-DASH intervention for neurodegenerative delay with cognitive disorders(MIND), and the incidence of cognitive disorders. METHODS Prospective studies on the association of MED, DASH and MIND with cognitive disorders in Chinese and English literatures were retrieved from PubMed, Wanfang, CNKI and VIP databases by title/abstract retrieval strategy from database establishment to February 28, 2022. Relative risk and its 95% confidence intervals were extracted to calculated the pooled effect and dose-response relationship. Heterogeneity was calculated by using Q test and I~2, and publication bias were analyzed by funnel plot, Begg's test and Egger's test. RESULTS Totally, 124 977 participants and 15 studies about the relationship between healthy dietary patterns and cognitive impairment diseases were included in this study. Compared with the lower adherence group, the relative risks of cognitive disorders were 0.84(95%CI 0.84-0.97) for participants with higher adherence to MED, 0.79(95%CI 0.79-1.00) for participants with higher adherence to DASH, 0.48(95%CI 0.32-0.71) for participants with higher adherence to MIND, respectively. Subgroup analysis showed that the risk of mild cognitive impairment was 0.76(95%CI 0.65-0.90) for participants with higher adherence to MED, and 0.63(95%CI 0.48-0.82) for DASH. No significant association were observed in the relationship of MED, DASH with dementia. Different scoring method for dietary patterns, dietary survey method, study area, follow-up time and sample size might be the main sources of heterogeneity. CONCLUSION Higher adherence to MED, DASH and MIND were associated with lower risk of cognitive disorders. MED and DASH were associated with a reduced risk of mild cognitive impairment rather than dementia.

Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has generated a new era in the world, also in the food safety. Up to now, there is no evidence to suggest that people can infect COVID-19 via food contaminated by SARS-CoV-2. Here, we analyzed the results of regular SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acid testing of considerable cold-chain food practitioners, cold-chain food surfaces, and their internal or external packaging as well as their associated environments, aiming to explore the risk of cold-chain food being contaminated by SARS-CoV-2 and the probability of people infecting COVID-19 through contaminated cold-chain food in the context of COVID-19 epidemic. This study found that only two batches of cold-chain food were contaminated by SARS-CoV-2, none of the cold-chain food handler were infected due to effective regulatory measures for cold-chain food. Therefore, effective supervision and preventive methods could effectively reduce the transmission risk of SARS-CoV-2 on cold-chain food.

Abstract
Numerous studies have investigated the risk factors of Alzheimer’s disease (AD); however, AD-risk factors related miRNAs were rarely reported. In this study, AD-risk factor related miRNAs of 105 Chinese individuals (45 AD patients and 60 cognitively normal controls) were investigated. The results showed that Hsa-miR-185-5p, Hsa-miR-20a-5p, and Hsa-miR-497-5p were related to AD and education, Hsa-miR-185-5p, Hsa-miR-181c-5p, Hsa-miR-664a-3p, Hsa-miR-27a-3p, Hsa-miR-451a, and Hsa-miR-320a were related to AD and depression. Target prediction of above miRNAs showed that these miRNAs were involved in the generation and clearance of amyloid-beta (Aβ), important molecules related to cognition, and disease-activated microglia response to AD. It is worth noting that Hsa-miR-185-5p was related to both education and depression, whose decreased expression pattern in AD patients was alleviated by education and enhanced by depression, and participates in Aβ generation and accumulation. Our results indicated that certain education and depression factors can contribute to AD progression by modulating miRNA expression, implying that preventive interventions might alter AD progression in Chinese patients.

Abstract
Background Current cholesterol guidelines have recommended very low low‐density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL‐C) treatment targets for people at high risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, recent observational studies indicated that very low LDL‐C levels may be associated with increased mortality and other adverse outcomes. The association between LDL‐C levels and long‐term risk of overall and cardiovascular mortality among the U.S. general population remains to be determined. Methods and Results This prospective cohort study included a nationally representative sample of 14 035 adults aged 18 years or older, who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey III 1988–1994. LDL‐C levels were divided into 6 categories: <70, 70–99.9, 100–129.9, 130–159.9, 160–189.9 and ≥190 mg/dL. Deaths and underlying causes of deaths were ascertained by linkage to death records through December 31, 2015. Weighted Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate the hazard ratios (HR) of mortality outcomes and its 95% CIs. During 304 025 person‐years of follow up (median follow‐up 23.2 years), 4458 deaths occurred including 1243 deaths from CVD. At baseline, mean age was 41.5 years and 51.9% were women. Very low and very high levels of LDL‐C were associated with increased mortality. After adjustment for age, sex, race and ethnicity, education, socioeconomic status, lifestyle factors, C‐reactive protein, body mass index, and other cardiovascular risk factors, individuals with LDL‐C<70 mg/dL, compared to those with LDL‐C 100–129.9 mg/dL, had HRs of 1.45 (95% CI, 1.10–1.93) for all‐cause mortality, 1.60 (95% CI, 1.01–2.54) for CVD mortality, and 4.04 (95% CI, 1.83–8.89) for stroke‐specific mortality, but no increased risk of coronary heart disease mortality. Compared with those with LDL‐C 100–129.9 mg/dL, individuals with LDL‐C≥190 mg/dL had HRs of 1.49 (95% CI, 1.09–2.02) for CVD mortality, and 1.63 (95% CI, 1.12–2.39) for coronary heart disease mortality, but no increased risk of stroke mortality. Conclusions Both very low and very high LDL‐C levels were associated with increased risks of CVD mortality. Very low LDL‐C levels was also associated with the high risks of all‐cause and stroke mortality. Further investigation is needed to elucidate the optimal range of LDL‐C levels for CVD health in the general population.

Abstract
Background: The relationship between grip strength and cognitive function remains no consensus in the older adults. Objective: To investigate the association of grip strength with cognitive function and cognitive performance in different domains. Methods: Participants of the present cross-sectional study were from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011-2014. Grip strength was measured by grip dynamometer, and combined handgrip strength was the sum of the largest reading from each hand. Four cognitive domains (immediate and delayed memory, language, and attention) were assessed by a set of neuropsychological tests. The subjective cognitive decline was determined via self-report. Results: Among 2,618 participants, combined grip strength was positively associated with scores on global cognitive function and each cognitive domain after controlling for demographic characteristics, lifestyle factors, and history of disease. In addition, compared to those with grip strength < 46.7 kg, participants with grip strength≥75.3 kg had odds ratios of 0.36 (95% CI: 0.21 to 0.63) for poor global cognitive function, 0.66 (95% CI: 0.38 to 1.13) for poor immediate memory, 0.53 (95% CI: 0.30 to 0.93) for poor delayed memory, 0.48 (95% CI: 0.27 to 0.86) for poor language function, 0.20 (95% CI: 0.11 to 0.35) for poor attention, and 0.36 (95% CI: 0.18 to 0.73) for subjective cognitive decline in fully adjusted model. Conclusion: Older adults with higher grip strength were significantly associated with better performance on cognition function included global and various domains such as memory, language, attention, and subjective cognitive decline.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES The mortality from Parkinson disease (PD) and its long-term trends in the United States in recent decades remains unknown. This study aimed to describe the trends in PD mortality in the United States from 1999 to 2019. METHODS We used data from the National Vital Statistics System, a nationwide, population-based death registry, to determine national trends in PD mortality, overall and by age, sex, race/ethnicity, urban-rural classification, and geographic location. Analyses focused on the data from 479,059 deaths due to PD from 1999 to 2019. Joinpoint regression was performed to examine temporal trends in age-adjusted death rates. RESULTS The age-adjusted mortality from PD increased from 5.4 (95% confidence interval [CI] 5.3-5.5) per 100,000 population in 1999 to 8.8 (95% CI, 8.7-8.9) per 100,000 population in 2019, with an average annual percent change of 2.4% (95% CI, 1.8%-3.0%). From 1999 to 2019, PD mortality increased significantly across all age groups, both sexes, various racial/ethnic groups, and different urban-rural classifications. The US states and District of Columbia with reported death rates all experienced an increase in PD mortality. Significant differences by sex and race/ethnicity were noted. Age-adjusted PD mortality rates were twice as high in men as in women and were greater in White individuals than those from other racial/ethnic groups. DISCUSSION From 1999 to 2019, the mortality from PD in the United States has increased significantly. The increase was regardless of age, sex, race/ethnicity, urban-rural classification, and geographic location. A comprehensive evaluation of long-term trends in PD mortality is important for health care priority setting.

Abstract
IMPORTANCE Although seafood is known to contain heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, many people choose to limit their seafood consumption because of fear of mercury exposure from seafood. It is imperative to clarify the potential health effects of current mercury exposure in contemporary populations. OBJECTIVE To examine the association of seafood consumption and mercury exposure with all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related mortality in the US general population. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS This prospective cohort study included adults 20 years or older who participated in the 2003 to 2012 cycles of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey; data were linked to mortality records through December 31, 2015. Data analysis was performed from January to March 10, 2021. EXPOSURES Seafood consumption was assessed through two 24-hour dietary recalls, and mercury exposure was assessed by blood mercury levels. MAIN OUTCOMES AND MEASURES All-cause and CVD-related mortality. Multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs of mortality associated with usual seafood consumption and blood mercury concentration quartiles. RESULTS This study included 17 294 participants (mean [SD] age, 45.9 [17.1] years; 9217 [53.3%] female) with a mean (SD) blood mercury concentration of 1.62 (2.46) μg/L. During 131 276 person-years of follow-up, 1076 deaths occurred, including 181 deaths from CVD. The multivariable-adjusted HR for an increase in seafood consumption of 1 oz equivalent per day and all-cause mortality was 0.84 (95% CI, 0.66-1.07) and for CVD-related mortality was 0.89 (95% CI, 0.54-1.47). Blood mercury level was not associated with all-cause or CVD-related mortality. Comparing the highest with the lowest quartile of blood mercury concentration, the multivariable-adjusted HRs were 0.82 (95% CI, 0.66-1.05) for all-cause mortality and 0.90 (95% CI, 0.53-1.52) for CVD-related mortality. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE In this cohort study of US adults, seafood consumption and mercury exposure with the current seafood consumption level were not significantly associated with the risk of all-cause or CVD-related mortality. These findings may inform future public health guidelines regarding mercury exposure, seafood consumption, and cardiovascular health promotion.

Abstract
How to sensitively detect early biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is nowadays, one of the major challenges. In this work, Aβ oligomers (AβO), one of the AD biomarkers, was analyzed using an electrochemical aptasensor, which was prepared based on thionine (Th) - functionalized three - dimensional carbon nanomaterials (reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)) immobilized DNA-aptamer. Th, a positively charged planar aromatic molecule, form many π - π conjugated structures with rGO and MWCNTs, then improving the structural stability, electron transfer and the capacitive properties of Th-rGO-MWCNTs nanocomposites. Under the optimal conditions, differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) current responses decreased with the increase of AβO concentration. The obtained AβO aptasensor presented a wide linear range of 0.0443 pM-443.00 pM and limit of detection (LOD) was 10 fM. Meanwhile, AβO aptasensor displayed remarkable stability and selectivity. It has a great potential for early diagnosis of AD in human real serum samples.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To optimize the protocol of meniscus cell extraction to enhance the efficiency of cell suspension preparation and maintain a high cell viability for single-cell RNA sequencing. METHODS We compared the efficiency of the routine cell extraction methods (short-time digestion and long-time digestion) and the optimized protocol for obtaining meniscus cell suspensions by evaluating the cell number obtained and the cell viability. Single-cell RNA sequencing datasets were analyzed to evaluate the stability of the cell suspension prepared using the optimized protocol. The reliability of the optimized protocol was assessed by comparing the single-cell RNA sequencing dataset obtained by the optimized protocol with published single-cell RNA sequencing datasets of the meniscus. RESULTS The optimized protocol harvested a greater number of cells (over 1×105) than the routine protocols. The cell suspension prepared with the optimized protocol showed a cell viability higher than 80%, the highest among the 3 methods. Analysis of single-cell RNA sequencing datasets showed that the ratio of the mitochondrial genes was below 20% in over 80% of the cells. CD34+ cells, MCAM+ cells and COL1A1+ cells were identified in the datasets. Comparison with the publish datasets showed that the optimized protocol was capable of harvesting COL3A1+, COL1A1+, MYLK+, BMP2+, CD93+ and CDK1+ cells. CONCLUSION Single-cell suspension prepared from the meniscus can be stably obtained using the optimized protocol for single-cell RNA sequencing using the 10× Genomics platform.

Abstract
As an essential trace element, selenium can be used to protect crops from pests, while, in nature, most crops cannot accumulate enough selenium from the soil to reach the effective dose for pest control. In this study, carbon dots modified with arginine in nano-scale was prepared and characterized, then, it was combined with sodium selenite to form selenium-carbon dots (Se-CDs). Function evaluation of Se-CDs showed that it could increase the absorption of selenium in plant leaves, promote the control efficiency of fenpropathrin, and protect plant from damage caused by Tetranychus cinnabarinus. In addition, we found that expressions of P450 genes and activity of P450 enzyme both decreased in selenium treated mites. In vivo, the acaricidal activity of fenpropathrin increased significantly when one of the P450 genes, CYP389B1, was silenced, and the recombinant protein of CYP389B1 could metabolize fenpropathrin in vitro. The results suggested that inhibiting the expression of P450 gene and repressing the detoxification of T. cinnabarinus was the molecular mechanism that how selenium promoted the acaricidal activity of fenpropathrin. The application of Se-CDs in the field will decrease the use of chemicals acaricides, reduce chemical residues, and ensure the safety of agricultural products.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES To examine the association between sleep structure and amnesic mild cognitive impairment (aMCI) in patients with insomnia disorder. METHODS A total of 256 patients with insomnia disorder were diagnosed by neurologists, 45 of whom were diagnosed with aMCI according to the Petersen criteria, and 45 participants with intact cognition were chosen as controls matched for age and education. A case-control study was conducted to compare sleep structure between aMCI and control patients with insomnia disorder. We evaluated self-reported sleep problems by the Insomnia Severity Index and objective sleep features by polysomnography. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the associations between sleep parameters and aMCI in patients with insomnia disorder. RESULTS There was no significant difference in Insomnia Severity Index scores between the aMCI and control groups. In the logistic regression after adjustment for covariates, people with a longer sleep duration (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] = 0.56, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.36-0.89), greater sleep efficiency (aOR = 0.50, 95% CI: 0.32-0.77), and a higher percentage of total sleep time in stage 3 of non-rapid eye movement sleep (N3%) (aOR = 0.02, 95% CI: 0.01-0.15) have a lower relative probability of having aMCI. By contrast, higher N1% (aOR = 2.28, 95% CI: 1.36-3.82) and wake after sleep onset (aOR = 1.31, 95% CI: 1.11-1.55) may be risk factors for aMCI in patients with insomnia. CONCLUSIONS In patients with insomnia disorder, sleep duration, sleep fragmentation, sleep efficiency, N1% and N3% were independently associated with the presence of aMCI. In the clinical setting, if patients with insomnia show much more serious abnormalities in these sleep indices, clinicians should pay attention to their cognitive function. In-depth research would also be worthwhile to elaborate the causality between sleep and cognitive decline.

Abstract
Sleep is believed to benefit the host defense against pathogens. We aimed to investigate the association of sleep quality with clinical outcomes among hospitalized patients with COVID-19. We conducted a prospective cohort study in 205 adult hospitalized patients with diagnosed moderate COVID-19, with follow-up until hospital discharge or death. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) assessed sleep quality before and after infection. The primary outcome was the incidence of severe or critical pneumonia, and the secondary outcomes were duration of hospital stay and laboratory measurements during the follow up. Among the 205 included hospitalized patients, 185 (90.2 %) experienced poorer sleep quality after infection than before according to the PSQI score, and 25 (12.2 %) developed severe or critical pneumonia during follow-up. In Cox regression models, the adjusted hazard ratio of developing severe or critical pneumonia associated with each 1 score increment in the PSQI score before and after infection was 1.23 (95% CI: 1.09, 1.39) and 1.35 (95 % CI: 1.08, 1.67), respectively. Poorer sleep quality was also significantly associated with a prolonged hospital stay and more serious dysregulations in immune system indicated by several laboratory markers. Poorer sleep quality, either in the daily time or after infection with SARS-CoV-2, was associated with worse clinical outcomes. These findings highlight the importance of good sleep in confronting the emerging pandemic of COVID-19.

Abstract
The CD@Fe3O4 photocatalysts were synthesized via hydrothermal synthesis method. The CD@Fe3O4 particles were synthesized using Fe3O4 as the core and using citric acid and ethylenediamine as a raw material, which were heated to 200 °C for 4 h. The synthesized fluorescent CD@Fe3O4 was characterized by HR-TEM, IR and fluorescence spectrophotometer. The HR-TEM results showed CD and Fe3O4 nanoparticles were uniform, mono-dispersed sphere or hemisphere particles with an average size of approximately 3 nm, and particle size of CD@Fe3O4 were mainly in range of 20-30 nm. XRD results showed the nanoparticles mainly belonged to Fe3O4 and CD@Fe3O4, which made recycling our photocatalysts possible due to the magnetic performance. On daylight lamp, the half-life of hexaconazole in CD@Fe3O4 photocatalysts was about 4 days, and it is lower than half-life (over 100 days) of hexaconazole without CD@Fe3O4 photocatalysts.
