Abstract
The bioaerogel microparticles have been recently developed for respiratory drug delivery and attract fast increasing interests. These highly porous microparticles have ultralow density and hence possess much reduced aerodynamic diameter, which favour them with greatly enhanced dispersibility and improved aerosolisation behaviour. The adjustable particle geometric dimensions by varying preparation methods and controlling operation parameters make it possible to fabricate bioaerogel microparticles with accurate sizes for efficient delivery to the targeted regions of respiratory tract (i.e. intranasal and pulmonary). Additionally, the technical process can provide bioaerogel microparticles with the opportunities of accommodating polar, weak polar and non-polar drugs at sufficient amount to satisfy clinical needs, and the adsorbed drugs are primarily in the amorphous form that potentially can facilitate drug dissolution and improve bioavailability. Finally, the nature of biopolymers can further offer additional advantageous characteristics of improved mucoadhesion, sustained drug release and subsequently elongated time for continuous treatment on-site. These fascinating features strongly support bioaerogel microparticles to become a novel platform for effective delivery of a wide range of drugs to the targeted respiratory regions, with increased drug residence time on-site, sustained drug release, constant treatment for local and systemic diseases and anticipated better-quality of therapeutic effects.

Abstract
Collagen-based aerogels have great potential for topical biomedical applications. Collagen's natural affinity with skin, biodegradability, and gelling behavior are compelling properties to combine with the structural integrity of highly porous matrices in the dry form (aerogels). This work aimed to produce a novel collagen-based aerogel and to perform the material's solid-state and physicochemical characterization. Aerogels were obtained by performing different solvent exchange approaches of a collagen-gelled extract and drying the obtained alcogels with supercritical CO2. The resulting aerogels showed a sponge-like structure with a relatively dense mesoporous network with a specific surface area of 201-203 m2/g, a specific pore volume of 1.08-1.15 cm3/g, and a mean pore radius of ca. 14.7 nm. Physicochemical characterization confirmed that the obtained aerogels are composed of pure collagen, and the aerogel production process does not impact protein tertiary structure. Finally, the material swelling behavior was assessed at various pH values (4, 7, and 10). Collagen aerogels presented a high water uptake capacity up to ~2700 wt. %, pH-dependent stability, and swelling behavior in aqueous media. The results suggest that this collagen aerogel could be a promising scaffold candidate for topical biomedical applications.

Abstract
Aerogels are unique and extremely porous substances with fascinating characteristics such as ultra-low density, extraordinary surface area, and excellent thermal insulation capabilities. Due to their exceptional features, aerogels have attracted significant interest from various fields, including energy, environment, aerospace, and biomedical engineering. This review paper presents an overview of the trailblazing research on aerogels, aiming at their preparation, characterization, and applications. Various methods of aerogel synthesis, such as sol-gel, supercritical drying, are discussed. Additionally, recent progress in the characterization of aerogel structures, including their morphology, porosity, and thermal properties, are extensively reviewed. Finally, aerogel's utilizations in numerous disciplines, for instance, energy storage, thermal insulation, catalysis, environmental remedy, and biomedical applications, are summarized. This review paper provides a comprehensive understanding of aerogels and their prospective uses in diverse fields, highlighting their unique properties for future research and development.

Abstract
Cryogels offer a promising macroporous platform that can be employed as either a functional ingredient in food composites or a colloidal template for incorporating bioactives, including probiotic living cells. The aim of the present work is to explore the functionality of two plant seed polysaccharides, flaxseed gum (FG) and alfalfa galactomannan (AAG), in individual and combined (1:1 ratio) milk protein-based cryogels, namely sodium caseinate (NaCas) and whey protein isolate (WPI). These cryogels were created by freeze-drying hydrogels formed via L.rhamnosus GG - a human gut-relevant probiotic strain - fermentation. Our findings showed that including gum in the composition limited volume contraction during lyophilisation, reduced macropore size and thickened cryogel skeleton vessels. Furthermore, gum-containing cryogels displayed improved thermal stability and slower water disintegration rates. The AAG-stabilised cryogels specifically showed a notable reduction in monolayer water content compared to FG. From a mechanistic viewpoint, AAG influenced the physicochemical and microstructural properties of the cryogels, most probably via its self-association during cryogenic processing, promoting the development of intertwined protein-gum networks. FG, on the other hand, enhanced these properties through electrostatic complexation with proteins. Cryogels made from protein-polysaccharide blends exhibited promising techno-functional properties for enhancing and diversifying food product innovation.

Abstract
Nanocellulose has received considerable attention in diverse research fields owing to its unique nanostructure-mediated physicochemical properties. However, classical acid hydrolysis usually destroys the microstructural integrity of cellulose, leading to the violent dissociation of cellulose into low-dimensional nanofibers and limiting the formation of intact structures with high specific surface areas. Herein, we have optimized the methodology of dilute acid vapor hydrolysis combined with the enzymatic hydrolysis (DAVE) method and investigated the pore formation mechanism of cellulose nanomesh (CNM). Benefiting from the selective nano-engraving effect of hydrochloric acid vapor on the amorphous region of cellulose followed by widening of the three-dimensional nanopores using enzymatic hydrolysis, confirmed by topographic, spectroscopic, and crystallographic tests, the as-prepared CNM, significantly different from the existing nanocellulose, exhibited improved specific surface area (98.37 m2/g), high yield (88.5 %), high crystallinity (73.4 %), and excellent thermal stability (375.4 °C). The proposed DAVE approach may open a new avenue for nanocellulose manufacturing.

Abstract
To address the limitations of Antarctic krill oil (AKO) such as easy oxidation, unacceptable fishy flavor and low bioaccessibility of astaxanthin in it, a multiple-effect delivery vehicle for AKO is needed. In this study, whey protein isolate (WPI) and xanthan gum (XG) were utilized to construct AKO into oleogels by generating foam-templates. The effects of the concentration of XG on the properties of foam, cryogel and the corresponding oleogels were investigated, and the formation mechanism of oleogel was discussed from the perspective of the correlation between foam-cryogel-oleogel. The results demonstrated that with the increase of the concentration of XG, the foam stability was improved, the cryogel after freeze drying had a more uniform network structure and superior oil absorption ability, and the corresponding oleogel had excellent oil holding ability after oil absorption. The AKO oleogels showed superior oxidative stability compared with AKO. The in vitro digestion experiments demonstrated that the bioaccessibility of the astaxanthin in this oleogel was also considerably higher than that in AKO. In addition, this oleogel had masking effect on the odor-presenting substances in AKO, while retaining other flavors of AKO. The foam-templated oleogel can be considered as a multiple-effect vehicle for AKO to facilitate its application in food products. This study provides theoretical basis and data support for the development and utilization of novel vehicle for AKO, broadening the application of AKO in the field of food science.

Abstract
This review explores the field of hybrid materials in the context of bio-based aerogels for the development of sustainable packaging solutions. Increasing global concern over environmental degradation and the growing demand for environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional packaging materials have led to a growing interest in the synthesis and application of bio-based aerogels. These aerogels, which are derived from renewable resources such as biopolymers and biomass, have unique properties such as a lightweight structure, excellent thermal insulation, and biodegradability. The manuscript addresses the innovative integration of bio-based aerogels with various other materials such as nanoparticles, polymers, and additives to improve their mechanical, barrier, and functional properties for packaging applications. It critically analyzes recent advances in hybridization strategies and highlights their impact on the overall performance and sustainability of packaging materials. In addition, the article identifies the key challenges and future prospects associated with the development and commercialization of hybrid bio-based aerogel packaging materials. The synthesis of this knowledge is intended to contribute to ongoing efforts to create environmentally friendly alternatives that address the current problems associated with conventional packaging while promoting a deeper understanding of the potential of hybrid materials for sustainable packaging solutions.

Abstract
Drug delivery systems have emerged as a prominent research focus in the field of drug development, offering enhanced stability and improved bioavailability. Among them, protein (silk, gelatin and whey) or polysaccharide (alginate, chitosan, cellulose, starch, pectin and carrageenan) aerogels derived from natural sources have gained increasing popularity due to their unique advantages, such as cost-effectiveness, flexible preparation, bioactivity, biocompatibility, and biodegradability. However, despite their growing significance, there remains a lack of comprehensive information and ongoing confusion regarding the application of protein/polysaccharide aerogels in drug delivery system. Hence, the objective of this review was to provide a comprehensive review of the research progress in protein/polysaccharide aerogels for drug delivery systems from the perspective of aerogels category, synthesis strategy, drug-loading method, performance characteristic and release mechanism. Furthermore, by consolidating the existing information, we aimed to present our own perspectives and insights on the future development of protein/polysaccharide aerogels in drug delivery system. In conclusion, this comprehensive review served as a valuable resource for researchers and scholars, addressing the current gaps in knowledge and clarifying the complex landscape of protein/polysaccharide aerogels in drug delivery system.

Abstract
Aerogel-based biomaterials are increasingly being considered for biomedical applications due to their unique properties such as high porosity, hierarchical porous network, and large specific pore surface area. Depending on the pore size of the aerogel, biological effects such as cell adhesion, fluid absorption, oxygen permeability, and metabolite exchange can be altered. Based on the diverse potential of aerogels in biomedical applications, this paper provides a comprehensive review of fabrication processes including sol-gel, aging, drying, and self-assembly along with the materials that can be used to form aerogels. In addition to the technology utilizing aerogel itself, it also provides insight into the applicability of aerogel based on additive manufacturing technology. To this end, how microfluidic-based technologies and 3D printing can be combined with aerogel-based materials for biomedical applications is discussed. Furthermore, previously reported examples of aerogels for regenerative medicine and biomedical applications are thoroughly reviewed. A wide range of applications with aerogels including wound healing, drug delivery, tissue engineering, and diagnostics are demonstrated. Finally, the prospects for aerogel-based biomedical applications are presented. The understanding of the fabrication, modification, and applicability of aerogels through this study is expected to shed light on the biomedical utilization of aerogels.

Abstract
Impact of glycerol on the physico-functional, morphological, mechanical, and rehydration properties ofcorn starch-based aerogel has been investigated. The aerogel was prepared from hydrogel (sol-gel method) using solvent exchange and supercritical CO2 drying. Glycerol-infused aerogel had a more connected, denser structure (0.38-0.45 g/cm3), enhanced hygroscopic behavior, and was reusable up to eight times in terms of its capacity to absorb water after being drawn from the soaked sample. However, the inclusion of glycerol reduced the aerogel's porosity (75.89-69.91 %) and water absorption rate (WAR; 118.53-84.64 %) but enhanced its percentage shrinkage (75.03-77.99 %) and compressive strength (26.01-295.06 N). The most effective models for describing the rehydration behavior of aerogel were determined to be the Page, Weibull, and Modified Peleg models. Glycerol addition improved the internal strength of the aerogel so could be recycled without significant change in the physical characteristics of the aerogel. By effectively eliminating the condensed moisture that was developed inside the packing owing to the transpiration of fresh spinach leaves, the aerogel extended the storage life of the leaves by up to eight days. The glycerol-based aerogel has the potential to be employed as a carrier matrix for various chemicals and a moisture scavenger.

Abstract
The properties of amyloid fibrils, e.g., unique structural characteristics and superior biocompatibility, make them a promising vehicle for drug delivery. Here, carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and whey protein isolate amyloid fibril (WPI-AF) were used to synthesize amyloid-based hybrid membranes as vehicles for the delivery of cationic and hydrophobic drugs (e.g., methylene blue (MB) and riboflavin (RF)). The CMC/WPI-AF membranes were synthesized via chemical crosslinking coupled with phase inversion. The zeta potential and scanning electron microscopy results revealed a negative charge and a pleated surface microstructure with a high content of WPI-AF. FTIR analysis showed that the CMC and WPI-AF were cross-linked via glutaraldehyde and the interacting forces between membrane and MB or RF was found to be electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding, respectively. Next, the in vitro drug release from membranes was monitored using UV-vis spectrophotometry. Additionally, two empirical models were used to analyze the drug release data and relevant rate constant and parameters were determined accordingly. Moreover, our results indicated that in vitro drug release rates depended on the drug–matrix interactions and transport mechanism, which could be controlled by altering the WPI-AF content in membrane. This research provides an excellent example of utilizing two-dimensional amyloid-based materials for drug delivery.

Abstract
Dried porous materials based on plant proteins are attracting large attention thanks to their potential use as sustainable food ingredients. Nevertheless, plant proteins present lower gelling properties than animal ones. Plant protein gelling could be improved by optimising gelation conditions by acting on protein concentration, pH, and ionic strength. This work aimed to systematically study the effect of these factors on the gelation behaviour of soy and pea protein isolates. Protein suspensions having different concentrations (10, 15, and 20% w/w), pH (3.0, 4.5, 7.0), and ionic strength (IS, 0.0, 0.6, 1.5 M) were heat-treated (95 °C for 15 min) and characterised for rheological properties and physical stability. Strong hydrogels having an elastic modulus (G') higher than 103 Pa and able to retain more than 90% water were only obtained from suspensions containing at least 15% soy protein, far from the isoelectric point and at an IS above 0.6 M. By contrast, pea protein gelation was achieved only at a high concentration (20%), and always resulted in weak gels, which showed increasing G' with the increase in pH and IS. Results were rationalised into a map identifying the gelation conditions to modulate the rheological properties of soy and pea protein hydrogels, for their subsequent conversion into xerogels, cryogels, and aerogels.

Abstract
The research was oriented towards the preparation of aerogel particles based on egg white and whey protein isolate using various dispersion methods: dripping, spraying, and homogenization. Based on the results of analytical studies, the most appropriate samples were selected to obtain aerogels loaded with the drug. The results of the experimental research were used to study methods for obtaining nasal drug delivery systems based on aerogels. Protein aerogels were obtained by thermal gelation followed by supercritical drying. The obtained particles of protein aerogels have a specific surface area of up to 350 m2/g with a pore volume of up to 2.9 cm3/g, as well as a porosity of up to 95%. The results of experimental studies have shown that changing the dispersion method makes it possible to control the structural characteristics of protein aerogel particles. The results of the studies were applied to obtain innovative nasal drug delivery systems for the treatment of socially significant diseases. Analytical studies were conducted to determine the amount and state of adsorbed drugs in protein aerogel particles, as well as in vivo experiments on the distribution of clomipramine in blood plasma and brain tissue of rats to study the pharmacokinetics and bioavailability of the resulting drug-loaded protein aerogel.

Abstract
The aim of the present work was to assess the effect of an innovative oleogelation strategy, the aerogel-template approach, on protein and lipid digestibility. Whey protein isolate (WP) was converted into aerogel particles via supercritical CO2 drying. Oleogels were then prepared by absorption of sunflower (SO) or flaxseed (FLX) oil (80%, w/w) into the aerogel particle template and subjected to in vitro digestion. WP aerogel-templated oleogels showed a specific destructuring behaviour during digestion. Confocal micrographs clearly demonstrated that the original oleogel structure was lost at the gastric level, with the release of oil droplets smaller (D32 < 10 μm) than those observed in the case of the unstructured oils (D32 > 30 μm), stabilised by undigested aerogel proteins. Sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and bicinchoninic acid (BCA) assay confirmed that aerogelation reduced the gastric proteolysis of WP from nearly 100% to 70%. The digestion of the SO oleogel led to similar gastric protein digestibility. In contrast, in the case of the FLX oleogel, gastric proteolysis decreased to 40%, suggesting a role of the oil nature in steering WP aerogel digestion. In all cases, upon intestinal digestion aerogel proteins resulted completely hydrolysed. The lipolysis degree of SO (75%) and FLX (34%) oil in the oleogels was higher than that of the unstructured SO (66%) and FLX (24%) oils, due to the larger surface offered by smaller oil droplets to the action of intestinal lipases. This was confirmed by dynamic light scattering, showing a shift towards smaller size in the digestive micelle distribution of oleogels at the end of the intestinal phase. Oleogelation through the WP aerogel-template approach could be regarded as a strategy to steer lipid digestibility while also modulating the release of bioaccessible peptides.

Abstract
The unique structural characteristics and superior biocompatibility make the protein nanofibers promising immobilization platforms/substrates for catalysts/enzymes. Metal nanoparticles have been employed as the catalysts in industries due to their excellent catalytic activity and stability, whereas their high surface energy leads to nanoparticle aggregation, thereby hampering their catalytic performance. Here, amyloid fibril (AF) derived from whey protein isolate (WPI) was chosen as the support of silver nanoparticles (AgNP) and utilized for the catalytic reduction of methylene blue (MB). The one-dimensional amyloid-based hybrid materials (AgNP/WPI-AF) were first synthesized via chemical or photochemical route. The characterization of AgNP/WPI-AF by UV-vis spectrophotometry and electron microscopy revealed that the sizes of AgNP on WPI-AF's surface ranged from 2 to 30 nm. Next, the catalytic performances of AgNP/WPI-AF prepared by various routes for MB degradation were investigated. Additionally, the kinetic data were analyzed using two different models and the apparent rate constants and thermodynamic parameters were further determined accordingly. Moreover, the reusability of AgNP/WPI-AF was assessed by monitoring the percentage removal of MB over consecutive filtering cycles. Our results indicated that Langmuir-Hinshelwood-type mechanism better described the catalytic MB reduction using AgNP/WPI-AF. This work provides a nice example of application of nanoparticle-amyloid fibril composite materials for catalysis.

Abstract
This review discusses the most commonly employed methods for determining pore size and pore size distribution in bioaerogels. Aerogels are materials with high porosity and large surface areas. Most of their pores are in the range of mesopores, between 2 and 50 nm. They often have smaller or larger pores, which presents a significant challenge in determining the exact mean pore size and pore size distribution in such materials. The precision and actual value of the pore size are of considerable importance since pore size and pore size distribution are among the main properties of aerogels and are often directly connected with the final application of those materials. However, many recently published papers discuss or present pore size as one of the essential achievements despite the misinterpretation or the wrong assignments of pore size determination. This review will help future research and publications evaluate the pore size of aerogels more precisely and discuss it correctly. The study covers methods such as gas adsorption, from which BJH and DFT models are often used, SEM, mercury porosimetry, and thermoporometry. The methods are described, and the results obtained are discussed. The following paper shows that there is still no precise method for determining pore size distribution or mean pore size in aerogels until now. Knowing that, it is expected that this field will evolve in the future.

Agar emulsion gels presented stiffer behaviour, with smaller and more homogeneous oil droplets (ϕ ∼ 12 µm) than those from κ-carrageenan (ϕ ∼ 243 µm). The structure of κ-carrageenan gels was characterized by the presence of rigid swollen linear chains, while agar produced more branched networks. After simulated gastrointestinal digestion bile salt lamellae/micelles (∼5 nm) and larger vesicles of partially digested oil (Rg ∼ 20-50 nm) were the predominant structures, being their proportion dependent of the polysaccharide type and the physical state of the gel network. The presence of curcumin induced the formation of larger vesicles and limited the formation of mixed lamellae/micelles.

Abstract
Protein-based materials have found applications in a wide range of biomedical fields because of their biocompatibility, biodegradability and great versatility. Materials of different physical forms including particles, hydrogels, films, fibers and microneedles have been fabricated e.g. as carriers for drug delivery, factors to promote wound healing and as structural support for the generation of new tissue. This review aims at providing an overview of the current scientific knowledge on protein-based materials, and selected preclinical and clinical studies will be reviewed in depth as examples of the latest progress within the field of protein-based materials, specifically focusing on non- and minimally invasive strategies mainly for topical application.

Abstract
To improve the mechanical strength and oil-loading performances of egg white protein (EWP) aerogel, the effects of different grafting degrees on the modification of EWP by sodium carboxymethylcellulose (CMC-Na) were investigated. After different dry-heat treatment durations (0, 12, 24, 36, and 48 h), the EWP/CMC-Na conjugates with different grafting degrees (noted as EC0, EC12, EC24, EC36, and EC48, respectively) were obtained. Subsequently, the physicochemical properties of the conjugates, as well as the microstructure, mechanical properties, pore parameters, emulsification properties and oil-carrying properties of the conjugated aerogels, were characterized. The results showed that EC12 (with a grafting degree of 8.35%) aerogel possessed a uniform structure, the largest specific surface area, and the best emulsification performance. This facilitated a more robust aerogel (2.05 MPa) with nearly three times the mechanical strength of EWP aerogel. Moreover, this had a positive influence on the efficient loading and stable retention of oil. EC12 aerogel thus achieved an oil absorption capacity of 5.46 g/g aerogel and an oil holding capacity of 31.95%, and both values were nearly 1.7 times higher than those of EWP aerogel. In general, the EWP-based aerogel with a grafting degree of 8.35% had the best mechanical and oil-loading properties.

Abstract
Traditional inorganic aerogels sustainability, biodegradability, and environmental safety concerns have driven researchers to find their safe green alternatives. Recently, interest in the application of bio-aerogels has rapidly increased in the food industry due to their unique characteristics such as high specific surface area and porosity, ultralow density, tunable pore size and morphology, and superior properties (physicochemical, mechanical, and functional). Bio-aerogels, a special category of highly porous unique materials, fabricated by the sol-gel method followed by drying processes, comprising three-dimensional networks of interconnected biopolymers (e.g., polysaccharides and proteins) with numerous air-filled pores. The production of bio-aerogels begins with the formation of a homogeneously dispersed precursor solution, followed by gelation and wet gel drying procedures by employing special drying techniques including atmospheric-, freeze-, and supercritical drying. Due to their special properties, bio-aerogels have emerged as sustainable biomaterial for many industrial applications, i.e., encapsulation and controlled delivery, active packaging, heavy metals separation, water and air filtration, oleogels, and biosensors. Bio-aerogels are low-cost, biocompatible, and biodegradable sustainable material that can be used in improving the processing, storage, transportation, and bioavailability of food additives, functional ingredients, and bioactive substances for their health benefits with enhanced shelf-life.

Abstract
Protein aerogel particles prepared by supercritical-CO2-drying (SCD) of ground whey protein (WP) hydrogels (20% w/w, pH 5.7) were converted into oleogels by dispersion in selected edible oils (castor, cod liver, corn, flaxseed, MCT, peanut and sunflower oil). The obtained oleogels were analysed for oil content, microstructure, rheological properties, and ATR-FTIR spectra. Except for castor oil, solid-like, plastic materials with comparable composition (80% oil, 20% WP) and rheological properties (G′~3.5 × 105 Pa, G″~0.20 × 105 Pa, critical stress~800 Pa, tanδ~0.060) were obtained. Optical and confocal microscopy showed that the generated structure was associated with the capillary-driven absorption of oil into the porous aerogel particles interconnected via particle-particle interactions. In this structure, the oil was stably entrapped. Results evidenced the reduced role of edible oil characteristics with the exception of castor oil, whose high polarity probably favoured particle–oil interactions hindering particle networking. This work demonstrates that WP aerogels could be regarded as versatile oleogel templates allowing the structuring of many edible oils into solid-like materials.

Abstract
Mesoporous aerogel microparticles are promising drug delivery systems. However, their in vivo biodistribution pathways and health effects are unknown. Suspensions of fluorescein-labeled silica-gelatin hybrid aerogel microparticles were injected into the peritoneum (abdominal cavity) of healthy mice in concentrations of 52 and 104 mg kg-1 in a 3-week-long acute toxicity experiment. No physiological dysfunctions were detected, and all mice were healthy. An autopsy revealed that the aerogel microparticles were not present at the site of injection in the abdominal cavity at the end of the experiment. The histological study of the liver, spleen, kidneys, thymus and lymphatic tissues showed no signs of toxicity. The localization of the aerogel microparticles in the organs was studied by fluorescence microscopy. Aerogel microparticles were not detected in any of the abdominal organs, but they were clearly visible in the cortical part of the parathymic lymph nodes, where they accumulated. The accumulation of aerogel microparticles in parathymic lymph nodes in combination with their absence in the reticuloendothelial system organs, such as the liver or spleen, suggests that the microparticles entered the lymphatic circulation. This biodistribution pathway could be exploited to design passive targeting drug delivery systems for flooding metastatic pathways of abdominal cancers that spread via the lymphatic circulation.

Abstract
Zirconia aerogels are porous nanomaterials with high specific surface areas and low thermal conductivities that are suitable for a wide range of functions. The applications of zirconia aerogels include numerous uses in thermal management systems that are specifically beneficial in aeronautics and aerospace systems. This review seeks to detail the synthesis, processing, and characterization of these unique materials. However, the many distinctive synthesis pathways and processing conditions of zirconia aerogels can make the optimization of these materials difficult, potentially inhibiting further development. Independent variables in the synthesis process alone include zirconium precursor, rare earth stabilizer, solvent system, gelation agent, and surfactant templating agent. If only two distinct options were available for each synthetic variable, there would be up to 32 different synthetic pathways; if there were three options for each variable, 243 different synthetic pathways would be possible. Apart from the gel synthesis, processing conditions, including drying method, drying temperature, drying solvent, and sintering temperature, as well as various techniques used to characterize aerogels, need to be considered. To mitigate the sheer volume of synthetic parameters, this review uses an architected information structure to contemplate approximately 600 aerogel materials, along with the synthesis and processing conditions that make each material unique. By utilizing this information structure, containing over 10,000 relationships amongst 3,800 nodes, the connection between specific properties of zirconia aerogels and the pathways used to produce them can be more easily visualized, leading to a more effective understanding of the many variables that are used in the synthesis and processing of these materials. This review seeks to utilize data science in a way that can elucidate structure-property relationships in colloidal chemistry, providing a more efficient way to evaluate the synthesis and processing of materials with high experimental dimensionality.

Abstract
Porous carbon structures derived from whey powders are described and evaluated as potential scaffolds in bone tissue engineering. These materials have a porosity between 48% and 58%, with a hierarchical pore size distribution ranging from 1 to 400 micrometres. Compressive strength and elastic modulus are outstanding for such a porous material, being up to three times better than those of traditional HA or TCP scaffolds with similar porosities. They also present non-cytotoxic and bioactive behavior, due to their carbon-based composition that also includes some residual mineral salts content.

Abstract
The stability of betalains (Bet) encapsulated in cryogels made with a mixture of albumin (ALB) and albumin-pectin (ALB-PEC) as wall materials were evaluated during storage at 32% and 83% relative humidity (RH) at several different temperature conditions (4 °C, 30 °C and 40 °C). The retention of betalains (betanin + isobetanin) and phenolic compounds and the antioxidant activity were determined by high-performance liquid chromatography, the Folin-Ciocalteu method and radical ABTS*+ capture methodology. The color parameters and images of the encapsulated betalains were obtained. Cryogels prepared with ALB at 32% RH and at 4 °C provided betanin and isobetanin retention of 72% and 82%, with half-life times of 108 and 165 days, respectively. The antioxidant activity and phenolic compounds showed retention greater than 70% during storage at 32% RH at all temperatures. Cryogels prepared with ALB-PEC also conferred high retention percentages of phenolic compounds at 83% RH, but this high RH caused a significant decrease in the retention of betalains. Both ALB and ALB-PEC improved betalain stability during storage compared with the extracts without encapsulating. Therefore, cryogels could be used as protection matrices for betalains.

Abstract
An open-porous protein sponge with mixed wettability is presented made entirely from whey proteins and with promising applications in biomedicine, pharmaceutical, and food industry. The fabrication relies on an additive-free, clean and scalable process consisting of foaming followed by controlled microwave-convection drying. Volumetric heating throughout the matrix induced by microwaves causes fast expansion and elongation of the foam bubbles, retards crust formation and promotes early protein denaturation. These effects counteract collapse and shrinkage typically encountered in convection drying of foams. The interplay of high protein content, tailored gas incorporation and controlled drying result in a dried structure with dual-scale porosity composed of open macroscopic elongated foam bubbles and microscopic pores in the surrounding solid lamellae induced by water evaporation. Due to the insolubility and mixed wettability of the denatured protein network, polar and non-polar liquids are rapidly absorbed into the interconnected capillary system of the sponge without disintegrating. While non-watery liquids penetrate the pores by capillary suction, water diffuses also into the stiff protein matrix, inducing swelling and softening. Abstract
This work is aimed at providing a description of the complex world of drug carriers, starting from the description of this particular market in terms of revenue. Then, a brief overview of several types of conventional and innovative drug carrier systems has been included. The types of administration routes were also analyzed, with a critical and qualitative comment on drug release kinetics and drug profile shapes. Carriers were classified according to their ability to provide a prolonged and targeted release. The concept of the therapeutic window has been presented, providing advantages of having pulsed drug release to avoid side effects to target tissues. A critical comment on the use of conventional and innovative techniques for the production of drug carriers by large industrial companies has been proposed. As a final attempt for this work, an overall unique schematization of a drug carrier production process has been added, highlighting the necessity to create a strong double link among world-requested versatility of drug carriers for human applications and the newly developed industrial processes.

Abstract
Aerogels are the lightest processed solid materials on Earth and with the largest empty volume fraction in their structure. Composition versatility, modularity, and feasibility of industrial scale manufacturing are behind the fast emergence of aerogels in the drug delivery field. Compared to other 3D materials, the high porosity (interconnected mesopores) and high specific surface area of aerogels may allow faster loading of small-molecule drugs, less constrained access to inner regions of the matrix, and more efficient interactions of the biological milieu with the polymer matrix. Processing in supercritical CO2 medium for both aerogel production (drying) and drug loading (impregnation) has remarkable advantages such as absence of an oxidizing environment, clean manufacture, and easiness for the scale-up under good manufacturing practices. The aerogel solid skeleton dictates the chemical affinity to the different drugs, which in turn determines the loading efficiency and the release pattern. Aerogels can be used to increase the solubility of BCS Class II and IV drugs because the drug can be deposited in amorphous state onto the large surface area of the skeleton, which facilitates a rapid contact with the body fluids, dissolution, and release. Conversely, tuning the aerogel structure by functionalization with drug-binding moieties or stimuli-responsive components, application of coatings and incorporation of drug-loaded aerogels into other matrices may enable site-specific, stimuli-responsive, or prolonged drug release. The present review deals with last decade advances in aerogels for drug delivery. An special focus is paid first on the loading efficiency of active ingredients and release kinetics under biorelevant conditions. Subsequent sections deal with aerogels intended to address specific therapeutic demands. In addition to oral delivery, the physical properties of the aerogels appear to be very advantageous for mucosal administration routes, such as pulmonary, nasal, or transdermal. A specific section devoted to recent achievements in gene therapy and theranostics is also included. In the last section, scale up strategies and life cycle assessment are comprehensively addressed.

Abstract
Hydrogels, polymeric network materials, are capable of swelling and holding the bulk of water in their three-dimensional structures upon swelling. In recent years, hydrogels have witnessed increased attention in food and biomedical applications. In this paper, the available literature related to the design concepts, types, functionalities, and applications of hydrogels with special emphasis on food applications was reviewed. Hydrogels from natural polymers are preferred over synthetic hydrogels. They are predominantly used in diverse food applications for example in encapsulation, drug delivery, packaging, and more recently for the fabrication of structured foods. Natural polymeric hydrogels offer immense benefits due to their extraordinary biocompatible nature. Hydrogels based on natural/edible polymers, for example, those from polysaccharides and proteins, can serve as prospective alternatives to synthetic polymer-based hydrogels. The utilization of hydrogels has so far been limited, despite their prospects to address various issues in the food industries. More research is needed to develop biomimetic hydrogels, which can imitate the biological characteristics in addition to the physicochemical properties of natural materials for different food applications.

Abstract
This work aims to contribute to the theoretical and experimental research of supercritical processes for intensification and combination in one apparatus. Investigation is carried out to improve production technology of organic alginate aerogels. It is proposed within the investigation to carry out the solvent exchange stage, an important stage of organic aerogels production, under pressure in a carbon dioxide medium in the same apparatus used for supercritical drying. The phase behavior in the system "carbon dioxide-water-2-propanol", which arises during such a solvent exchange stage, is studied theoretically. An experimental study of the process of step-by-step solvent exchange under pressure was carried out through multiphase and homogeneous regions of the phase diagram of such a system. As a result, new highly efficient technology for the production of organic aerogels was proposed, which can be implemented by combining the two main stages of the process.

Abstract
Nanocellulose has been widely concerned and applied in recent years. Because of its high aspect ratio, large specific surface area, good modifiability, high mechanical strength, renewability and biodegradability, nanocellulose is particularly suitable as a base for constructing lightweight porous materials. This review summarizes the preparation methods and applications of nanocellulose-based lightweight porous materials including aerogels, cryogels, xerogels, foams and sponges. The preparation of nanocellulose-based lightweight porous materials usually involves gelation and drying processes. The characteristics and influencing factors of three main drying methods including freeze, supercritical and evaporation drying are reviewed. In addition, the mechanism of physical and chemical crosslinking during gelation and the effect on the structure and properties of the porous materials in different drying methods are especially focused on. This contribution also introduces the application of nanocellulose-based lightweight porous materials in the fields of adsorption, biomedicine, energy storage, thermal insulation and sound absorption, flame retardancy and catalysis.

Abstract
According to the International Energy Agency, biorefinery is "the sustainable processing of biomass into a spectrum of marketable bio-based products (chemicals, materials) and bioenergy (fuels, power, heat)". In this review, we survey how the biorefinery approach can be applied to highly porous and nanostructured materials, namely aerogels. Historically, aerogels were first developed using inorganic matter. Subsequently, synthetic polymers were also employed. At the beginning of the 21st century, new aerogels were created based on biomass. Which sources of biomass can be used to make aerogels and how? This review answers these questions, paying special attention to bio-aerogels' environmental and biomedical applications. The article is a result of fruitful exchanges in the frame of the European project COST Action "CA 18125 AERoGELS: Advanced Engineering and Research of aeroGels for Environment and Life Sciences".

Abstract
This study introduces a new synthesis route for obtaining homogeneous chitosan (CS)-silica hybrid aerogels with CS contents up to 10 wt%, using 3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) as coupling agent, for tissue engineering applications. Aerogels were obtained using the sol-gel process followed by CO2 supercritical drying, resulting in samples with bulk densities ranging from 0.17 g/cm3 to 0.38 g/cm3. The textural analysis by N2-physisorption revealed an interconnected mesopore network with decreasing specific surface areas (1230-700 m2/g) and pore sizes (11.1-8.7 nm) by increasing GPTMS content (2-4 molar ratio GPTMS:CS monomer). In addition, samples exhibited extremely fast swelling by spontaneous capillary imbibition in PBS solution, presenting swelling capacities from 1.75 to 3.75. The formation of a covalent crosslinked hybrid structure was suggested by FTIR and confirmed by an increase of four hundred fold or more in the compressive strength up to 96 MPa. Instead, samples synthesized without GPTMS fractured at only 0.10-0.26 MPa, revealing a week structure consisted in interpenetrated polymer networks. The aerogels presented bioactivity in simulated body fluid (SBF), as confirmed by the in vitro formation of hydroxyapatite (HAp) layer with crystal size of approximately 2 µm size in diameter. In vitro studies revealed also non cytotoxic effect on HOB® osteoblasts and also a mechanosensitive response. Additionally, control cells grown on glass developed scarce or no stress fibers, while cells grown on hybrid samples showed a significant (p < 0.05) increase in well-developed stress fibers and mature focal adhesion complexes.

Abstract
Recently, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine studies have evaluated smart biomaterials as implantable scaffolds and their interaction with cells for biomedical applications. Porous materials have been used in tissue engineering as synthetic extracellular matrices, promoting the attachment and migration of host cells to induce the in vitro regeneration of different tissues. Biomimetic 3D scaffold systems allow control over biophysical and biochemical cues, modulating the extracellular environment through mechanical, electrical, and biochemical stimulation of cells, driving their molecular reprogramming. In this review, first we outline the main advantages of using polysaccharides as raw materials for porous scaffolds, as well as the most common processing pathways to obtain the adequate textural properties, allowing the integration and attachment of cells. The second approach focuses on the tunable characteristics of the synthetic matrix, emphasizing the effect of their mechanical properties and the modification with conducting polymers in the cell response. The use and influence of polysaccharide-based porous materials as drug delivery systems for biochemical stimulation of cells is also described. Overall, engineered biomaterials are proposed as an effective strategy to improve in vitro tissue regeneration and future research directions of modified polysaccharide-based materials in the biomedical field are suggested.

Abstract
This study aims at investigating the effect of ethanol (EtOH) on the textural properties of whey protein and egg white protein hydrogels. The hydrogels were produced by thermally induced gel formation of aqueous protein solutions. The water contained in the gel network was subsequently exchanged by EtOH to assess structural changes upon exposure of hydrogels to ethanolic aqueous phases. The textural properties of the hydrogel and alcogel samples were analyzed by uniaxial compression tests. For both protein sources, the hardness increased exponentially when pH and EtOH concentration were increased. This increase correlated with a shrinkage of the gel samples. The gel texture was found to be elastic at low EtOH concentrations and became stiff and hard at higher EtOH concentrations. It was found that the solvent exchange influences the ion concentration within the gels and, therefore, the interactions between molecules in the gel structure. Non-covalent bonds were identified as substantially responsible for the gel structure.

Abstract
The present research was concerned with preparation of mesoporous starch (MPS) as a carrier for genistein, a model of poorly water-soluble phytoestrogen isoflavone; and exploration of the impact of different fabrication parameters on structural and loading properties. MPS is considered as a highly porous biomaterial which typically possesses nanometer-sized porous microstructure and low density, providing a large effective specific surface area (SSA) and hydrophilic surface to improve solubility, stability and bioavailability of poorly water-soluble active agents. To fabricate MPS, various concentrations (8-14% w/v) of starch from different sources (corn, potato and tapioca) was used for gel formation and the successive solvent exchange process was performed with use of various ethanol concentrations (40-70% v/v), which were then dried by different techniques (rotary vacuum evaporation, microwave and freeze drying). MPS quality attributes such as SSA, total porous volume, BJH pore diameter and swelling ratio were determined and effects of the fabrication parameters were investigated using L9-Taguchi orthogonal array design. The results indicate that second order polynomial regression models were well fitted for all response variables. Interestingly, the starch components greatly influenced physical properties of MPS. Also, the drying type and ethanol concentration altered significantly the model equations. The overall best fabrication condition (14% corn starch, 100% ethanol concentration in aging step and rotary vacuum drying) resulted in favorable MPS preparation with mean size of 105.4 nm and unimodal distribution. In the next step, genistein was encapsulated in MPS microstructure at different ratios, resulting in high loading capacity and efficiency (44.71% and 79.9%, respectively) at 1:1 weight ratio. Equilibrium adsorption isotherm of genistein was evaluated also by four different kinetics models including Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich, and Temkin isotherms. The experimental data were found to be fitted well to the Langmuir model (R2 = 0.989). According to the electron microscopy and XRD analysis, the degree of genistein crystallinity lowered remarkably after the impregnation in to MPS, indicating improved solubility. In-vitro release profile of genistein from MPS in the simulated gastrointestinal buffer solutions (pH 1.2 and 6.8) demonstrated that incorporating genistein into the MPS enhanced the dissolution rate compared with genistein powder. Release kinetic data were fitted to the Higuchi model (R2 = 0.98), indicating diffusion-controlled release mechanism. Altogether, well-tuned MPS fabrication method can be utilized for an efficient encapsulation and dissolution enhancement of poorly soluble phytochemicals, such as genistein.
