Effects of the rare elements lanthanum and cerium on the growth of colorectal and hepatic cancer cell lines

Subchronic Exposure to Low-Level Lanthanum, Cerium, and Yttrium Mixtures Altered Cell Cycle and Increased Oxidative Stress Pathways in Human LO-2 Hepatocytes but Did Not Cause Malignant Transformation

Human exposures to rare earth elements are increasing with expanded use in aerospace, precision instruments, and new energy batteries, materials, and fertilizers. Individually these elements have low toxicity, although few investigations have examined the health effects of longer-term mixture exposures. We used the LO-2 cell line to examine the effects of graded exposures to lanthanum, cerium, and yttrium (LCY) mixtures at 1-, 100-, and 1000-fold their human background levels (0.31 μg/L La, 0.25 μg/L Ce, and 0.12 μg/L Y) on cell cycle, oxidative stress, and nuclear factor erythroid-2-related factor (NRF2) pathway biomarkers, assessing responses every 10 passages up to 100 passages. Cell migration, concanavalin A, malignant transformation, and tumorigenesis in nude mice were also examined. Mixed LCY exposures activated oxidative stress and the NRF2 pathway by the 30th passage and increased the proportion of cells in the S phase and cell cycle-specific biomarkers by the 40th passage. LCY exposures did not cause malignant transformation of hepatocytes or induced tumorigenesis in nude mice but enhanced cell proliferation, migration, and agglutination. Importantly, LCY mixtures with longer-term exposure activated the NRF2 pathway and altered the hepatocyte cell cycle at doses far below those used in previous toxicological studies. The consequences of LCY mixtures for public health merit further study.

Insights into the effects of lanthanides on mammalian systems and potential applications

Furthermore, it underscores the importance of understanding their mechanisms to mitigate health risks, particularly for those exposed occupationally or via environmental sources. The review concludes with an overview of knowledge gaps and future research directions necessary for unlocking the therapeutic potential of lanthanides while ensuring safety and sustainability in their applications.

Lanthanide conjugate Pr-MPO elicits anti-cancer activity by targeting lysosomal machinery and inducing zinc-dependent cataplerosis

Acquired drug resistance is a major challenge in the management of cancer, which underscores the need for discovery and development of novel therapeutic strategies. We report here the mechanism of the anti-cancer activity of a small coordinate complex composed of the rare earth metal praseodymium (Pr) and mercaptopyridine oxide (MPO; pyrithione). Exposure of cancer cells to relatively low concentrations of the conjugate Pr-MPO (5 µM) significantly impairs cell survival in a p53-independent manner and irrespective of the drug resistant phenotype. Mechanistically, Pr-MPO-induced cell death is caspase-independent, not inhibitable by necrostatin, but associated with the appearance of autophagy markers. However, further analysis revealed incomplete autophagic flux, thus suggesting altered integrity of lysosomal machinery. Supporting the lysosomal targeting activity are data demonstrating increased lysosomal Ca2+ accumulation and alkalinization, which coincides with cytosolic acidification (drop in pHc from 7.75 to 7.00). In parallel, an increase in lysosomal activity of glycosidase alpha acid (GAA), involved in passive glycogen breakdown, correlates with rapid depletion of glucose stores upon Pr-MPO treatment. This is associated with swift cataplerosis of TCA cycle intermediates, loss of NAD+/NADH and increase in pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) activity to compensate for pyruvate loss. Addition of exogenous pyruvate rescued cell survival. Notably, lysosomal impairment and metabolic catastrophe triggered by Pr-MPO are suggestive of Zn2+-mediated cytotoxicity, which is confirmed by the ability of Zn2+ chelator TPEN to block Pr-MPO-mediated anti-tumor activity. Together, these results highlight the ability of the small molecule lanthanide conjugate to target the cells' waste clearing machinery as well as mitochondrial metabolism for Zn2+-mediated execution of cancer cells, which could have therapeutic potential against cancers with high metabolic activity.

An AIE probe for the fluorescence and colorimetric sensing of La3

In this work, a fluorescent probe N with aggregation-induced emission effect was synthesized by grafting naphtho[2,3-c]furan-1,3-dione and 2-hydrazinylbenzo[d]thiazole. The probe N could recognize La3+ selectively and sensitively accompanied with an obvious fluorescence and color change from green to blue. Moreover, with the help of AIE properties, probe N achieved the detection of La3+ in the solid state.

Feeding a Saccharomyces cerevisiae Fermentation Product to Mares in Late Gestation Alters the Biological Activity of Colostrum

The quality of equine colostrum is typically defined by refractometry or the concentration of maternal antibodies. However, the activity of other equine colostral bioactive molecules has not yet been investigated. This study analyzed whether the administration of a Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation product (SCFP) influences the biological activity of mare colostrum and whether the biological activity of colostrum has a lasting immunomodulating effect for foals. A total of fourteen pregnant mares received 20 g/day of a SCFP for a period of twelve weeks prior to the calculated date of birth (SCFP-group). Twelve pregnant mares without supplementation served as controls (CON). Colostral Brix values were determined within three hours after parturition. The concentration of IgG in blood sera and colostrum samples was determined with an ELISA. The biological activity was determined in a cell growth assay with a porcine epithelial cell line (IPEC-J2). Mares (at three weeks before the calculated date of birth) and foals (at the age of 5-8 months) received a parenteral active vaccination against influenza and tetanus. The administration of SCFP did not alter the mare's serum and colostrum IgG concentrations and did not exert a significant influence on the mares' early response to the vaccination. Growth and diarrhea episodes were comparable between foals of supplemented mares (SCFP) and foals of mares without supplementation (CON). Colostrum samples from SCFP-supplemented mares exhibited heightened biological activity. While SFCP and CON foals did not differ in their early response to vaccination, the vaccination-induced alterations in circulating neutrophilic granulocyte numbers were significantly correlated with the biological colostrum activity. These findings suggest that the supplementation of mares in late gestation with SCFP can enhance the biological activity of colostrum, which subsequently influences the innate immune responses of their offspring in later life.

Biochemical and biophysical interaction of rare earth elements with biomacromolecules: A comprehensive review

The growing utilization of rare earth elements (REEs) in industrial and technological applications has captured global interest, leading to the development of high-performance technologies in medical diagnosis, agriculture, and other electronic industries. This accelerated utilization has also raised human exposure levels, resulting in both favourable and unfavourable impacts. However, the effects of REEs are dependent on their concentration and molecular species. Therefore, scientific interest has increased in investigating the molecular interactions of REEs with biomolecules. In this current review, particular attention was paid to the molecular mechanism of interactions of Lanthanum (La), Cerium (Ce), and Gadolinium (Gd) with biomolecules, and the biological consequences were broadly interpreted. The review involved gathering and evaluating a vast scientific collection which primarily focused on the impact associated with REEs, ranging from earlier reports to recent discoveries, including studies in human and animal models. Thus, understanding the molecular interactions of each element with biomolecules will be highly beneficial in elucidating the consequences of REEs accumulation in the living organisms.

Global natural concentrations of Rare Earth Elements in aquatic organisms: Progress and lessons from fifty years of studies

Rare Earth Elements (REEs) consist of a coherent group of elements with similar physicochemical properties and exhibit comparable geochemical behaviors in the environment, making them excellent tracers of environmental processes. For the past 50 years, scientific communities investigated the REE concentrations in biota through various types of research (e.g. exploratory studies, environmental proxies). The extensive development of new technologies over the past two decades has led to the increased exploitation and use of REEs, resulting in their release into aquatic ecosystems. The bioaccumulation of these emerging contaminants has prompted scientific communities to explore the fate of anthropogenic REEs within aquatic ecosystems. To achieve this, it is necessary to determine the natural concentration levels of REEs in aquatic organisms and the factors controlling REE dynamics. However, knowledge gaps still exist, and no comprehensive approach currently exists to assess the REE concentrations at the ecosystem scale or the factors controlling these concentrations in aquatic organisms. Based on a database comprising 102 articles, this study aimed to: i) provide a retrospective analysis of research topics over a 50-year period; ii) establish reference REE concentrations in several representative phyla of aquatic ecosystems; and iii) examine the global-scale influences of habitat and trophic position as controlling factors of REE concentrations in organisms. This study provides reference concentrations for 16 phyla of freshwater or marine organisms. An influence of habitat REE concentrations on organisms has been observed on a global scale. A trophic dilution of REE concentrations was highlighted, indicating the absence of biomagnification. Lastly, the retrospective approach of this study revealed several research gaps and proposed corresponding perspectives to address them. Embracing these perspectives in the coming years will lead to a better understanding of the risks of anthropogenic REE exposure for aquatic organisms.

Exploring the multifaceted impact of lanthanides on physiological pathways in human breast cancer cells

Lanthanum (La) and cerium (Ce), rare earth elements with physical properties similar to calcium (Ca), are generally considered non-toxic when used appropriately. However, their ions possess anti-tumor capabilities. This investigation explores the potential applications and mechanisms of LaCl3 or CeCl3 treatment in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cell lines. TNBC, characterized by the absence of estrogen receptor (ERα), progesterone receptor (PR), and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER-2) expression, is prone to early metastasis and resistant to hormone therapy. Our results demonstrate that La/Ce treatment reduces cell growth, and when combined with cisplatin, it synergistically inhibits cell growth and the PI3K/AKT pathway. La and Ce induce oxidative stress by disrupting mitochondrial function, leading to protein oxidation. Additionally, they interfere with protein homeostasis and induce nucleolar stress. Furthermore, disturbance in F-actin web formation impairs cell migration. This study delves into the mechanism by which calcium-like elements La and Ce inhibit breast cancer cell growth, shedding light on their interference in mitochondrial function, protein homeostasis, and cytoskeleton assembly.

Rare earth elements in different body parts of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis (Crimea, Black Sea) and assessment of associated human health risks from its consumption

The rare earth element (REE) pollution in the hydrosphere has become a matter of serious concern lately. In this study, using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, the REE contents in soft tissue, byssus and shell liquor of the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis, as a potential REE pollution bioindicator, in the Black Sea were determined for the first time. The highest REE levels were observed in mussels from the seabed. The REE contents in byssus and shell liquor were higher than in soft tissue. In byssus, the contents of Y, La, Ce, Nd and Dy were the highest, whereas in shell liquor, the heavier REE and Sc were the most concentrated. No likely REE-associated risks from the mussel meat consumption were detected. In soft tissue and byssus, REE contents significantly correlated with that of silicon.

In vitro and in vivo study on fine-grained Mg-Zn-RE-Zr alloy as a biodegradeable orthopedic implant produced by friction stir processing

Magnesium alloys containing biocompatible components show tremendous promise for applications as temporary biomedical devices. However, to ensure their safe use as biodegradeable implants, it is essential to control their corrosion rates. In concentrated Mg alloys, a microgalvanic coupling between the α-Mg matrix and secondary precipitates exists which results in increased corrosion rate. To address this challenge, we engineered the microstructure of a biodegradable Mg-Zn-RE-Zr alloy by friction stir processing (FSP), improving its corrosion resistance and mechanical properties simultaneously. The FS processed alloy with refined grains and broken and uniformly distributed secondary precipitates showed a relatively uniform corrosion morphology accompanied with the formation of a stable passive layer on the alloy surface. In vivo corrosion evaluation of the processed alloy in a small animal model showed that the material was well-tolerated with no signs of inflammation or harmful by-products. Remarkably, the processed alloy supported bone until it healed till eight weeks with a low in vivo corrosion rate of 0.7 mm/year. Moreover, we analyzed blood and histology of the critical organs such as liver and kidney, which showed normal functionality and consistent ion and enzyme levels, throughout the 12-week study period. These results demonstrate that the processed Mg-Zn-RE-Zr alloy offers promising potential for osseointegration in bone tissue healing while also exhibiting controlled biodegradability due to its engineered microstructure. The results from the present study will have profound benefit for bone fracture management, particularly in pediatric and elderly patients.

The role of rare earth elements and dietary intake in tongue cancer: a mediation analysis in southeast China

OBJECTIVE

The current research aimed to examine how dietary intake and rare earth elements may affect the development of tongue cancer.

METHODS

The serum levels of 10 rare earth elements (REEs) in 171 cases and 171 healthy matched controls were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The conditional logistic regression was used to examine the relationship between dietary intake, serum levels of 10 REEs, and tongue cancer. Mediation effect and multiplicative interaction analysis were then performed to estimate the potential contribution of REEs in dietary intake associated with tongue cancer.

RESULTS

Compared with the control group, patients with tongue cancer consumed significantly less fish, seafood, fruit, green leafy vegetables, and non-green leafy vegetables, with higher serum praseodymium (Pr), dysprosium (Dy), and lanthanum (La) levels, and lower serum cerium (Ce) and scandium (Sc) levels. The interaction effect was observed between some REEs and food categories. Green vegetables' impact on the risk of tongue cancer is partially attributed to the La and Thorium (Th) elements (P < 0.05, the mediated proportion were 14.933% and 25.280%, respectively). The effect of non-green leafy vegetables for tongue cancer mediated via Pr, Dy, and Th (P < 0.05, the mediated proportion were 0.408%, 12.010%, and 8.969%, respectively), and the Sc components in seafood (P < 0.05, the mediated proportion was 26.120%) is partly responsible for their influence on the risk of tongue cancer.

CONCLUSION

The correlation between REEs and dietary intakes for tongue cancer is compact but intricate. Some REEs interact with food intake to influence tongue cancer, while others act as a mediator.

A Highly Sensitive and Selective Fluorescent Probe for the Detection of Cerium(III) Using Tridentate Based-Oxazolidine: Experimental and DFT Investigations

A new fluorescent sensor based on oxazolidine derivative, (2-(pyridin-2-yl)oxazolidine-4,4-diyl)dimethanol; TN), was designed and synthesized successfully in high yield (82%) under Schiff base reaction. The structural elucidation of the sensor has been confirmed by Infrared Spectroscopy, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy, and High Resolution Mass Spectrometry - Electrospray Ionization - Time of Flight. The designed TN sensor exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity towards an aqueous solution of cerium(III) over various metal ions under biologically relevant conditions (100.0 mM HEPES buffer pH 7.4). The limit of detection (LOD) was reported as 54.0 nM. The geometry of tridentate based-oxazolidine (TN) and its coordination of cerium(III) (TN-Ce³⁺) was proven by using the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The highest occupied molecular orbital - lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy gap was decreased when TN-Ce³⁺ is formed. The results indicated that TN can be used as a fluorescent probe for high sensitivity and selectivity detection of cerium(III) ions.

Kinetic Characterization of Cerium and Gallium Ions as Inhibitors of Cysteine Cathepsins L, K, and S

Heavy metal ions can disrupt biological functions via multiple molecular mechanisms, including inhibition of enzymes. We investigate the interactions of human papain-like cysteine endopeptidases cathepsins L, K, and S with gallium and cerium ions, which are associated with medical applications. We compare these results with zinc and lead, which are known to inhibit thiol enzymes. We show that Ga³⁺, Ce³⁺, and Ce⁴⁺ ions inhibit all tested peptidases with inhibition constants in the low micromolar range (between 0.5 µM and 10 µM) which is comparable to Zn²⁺ ions, whereas inhibition constants of Pb²⁺ ions are one order of magnitude higher (30 µM to 150 µM). All tested ions are linear specific inhibitors of cathepsin L, but cathepsins K and S are inhibited by Ga³⁺, Ce³⁺, and Ce⁴⁺ ions via hyperbolic inhibition mechanisms. This indicates a mode of interaction different from that of Zn²⁺ and Pb²⁺ ions, which act as linear specific inhibitors of all peptidases. All ions also inhibit the degradation of insoluble elastin, which is a common target of these peptidases in various inflammatory diseases. Our results suggest that these ions and their compounds have the potential to be used as cysteine cathepsin inhibitors in vitro and possibly in vivo.

U-Shaped Relationship of Rare Earth Element Lanthanum and Oral Cancer Risk: A Propensity Score-Based Study in the Southeast of China

As an important rare earth element (REE) extensively applied to industry, agriculture, and medicine, lanthanum (La) has attracted a host of health concerns. This study aimed to explore the relationship between La exposure and the risk of developing oral cancer through a case-control study with a large sample size. Serum La levels of 430 oral cancer patients and 1,118 healthy controls were detected by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The association of La level with the risk of oral cancer was assessed in two ways: (1) as a continuous scale based on restricted cubic splines (RCS); (2) as a priori defined centile categories using multivariate logistic regression model, based on propensity score matching (PSM) and inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW). The RCS revealed a non-linear U-shaped relationship between serum La and oral cancer risk. Serum La deficiency or excess was associated with an increased risk of oral cancer. When the La level was analyzed as a categorical variable, a similar U-shaped association was observed. Of note, compared to those with La concentrations of 0.243-0.341 μg/L (reference quantiles, 41st-60th), the risk was increased in those with the lower or higher quantiles (0.132-0.242 μg/L vs. 0.243-0.341 μg/L: OR = 1.80, 95%CI: 1.07-3.02; 0.342-0.497 μg/L vs. 0.243-0.341 μg/L: OR = 2.30, 95%CI: 1.38-3.84). The results were generally consistent with the PSM and IPTW analyses. This preliminary study provides strong evidence that there was a U-shaped relationship between serum La levels and oral cancer risk. Much additional work is warranted to confirm our findings.

Design and construction of an electrochemical sensor for the determination of cerium(iii) ions in petroleum water samples based on a Schiff base-carbon nanotube as an ionophore

A carbon paste sensor (CPE) and screen-printed sensor (SPE) for Ce(iii)-selective determination were prepared using a 2,6-pyridine dicarbomethine-triethylene tetraamine macrocyclic Schiff base ligand (PDCTETA) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as good sensing materials. With respect to most common cations, such as alkali, alkaline earth, transition, and heavy metal ions, the electrodes display high selectivity for the Ce(iii) ion. The sensors respond to Ce(iii) ions in a linear range of 1 × 10-7 to 1 × 10-1 and 1 × 10-8 to 1 × 10-1 mol L-1 with a slope of 18.96 ± 0.73 and 19.63 ± 0.51 mV per decade change in concentration with a detection limit of 1.10 × 10-8 and 5.24 × 10-9 mol L-1 for CPE (sensor IV) and SPE (sensor VIII), respectively. The sensors were found to have a lifetime of 102 and 200 days. The suggested electrodes performed well throughout the pH ranges of 3.5-8.0 and 3.0-8.5, with response times of 8 and 6 seconds for sensor IV and sensor VIII, respectively. The sensors have been used to measure Ce(iii) ions in water samples from several petroleum wells. They have also been utilized as indicator electrodes in Ce(iii) ion potentiometric titrations with EDTA. The results were quite similar to those obtained by employing atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS).

Bi-directional regulation functions of lanthanum-substituted layered double hydroxide nanohybrid scaffolds via activating osteogenesis and inhibiting osteoclastogenesis for osteoporotic bone regeneration

Rationale: Osteoporotic patients suffer symptoms of excessive osteoclastogenesis and impaired osteogenesis, resulting in a great challenge to treat osteoporosis-related bone defects. Based on the positive effect of rare earth elements on bone metabolism and bone regeneration, we try to prove the hypothesis that the La³⁺ dopants in lanthanum-substituted MgAl layered double hydroxide (La-LDH) nanohybrid scaffolds simultaneously activate osteogenesis and inhibit osteoclastogenesis.

Methods: A freeze-drying technology was employed to construct La-LDH nanohybrid scaffolds. The in vitro osteogenic and anti-osteoclastogenic activities of La-LDH nanohybrid scaffolds were evaluated by using ovariectomized rat bone marrow stromal cells (rBMSCs-OVX) and bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMMs) as cell models. The in vivo bone regeneration ability of the scaffolds was investigated by using critical-size calvarial bone defect model of OVX rats.

Results: La-LDH nanohybrid scaffolds exhibited three-dimensional macroporous structure, and La-LDH nanoplates arranged perpendicularly on chitosan organic matrix. The La³⁺ dopants in the scaffolds promote proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of rBMSCs-OVX by activating Wnt/β-catenin pathway, leading to high expression of ALP, Runx-2, COL-1 and OCN genes. Moreover, La-LDH scaffolds significantly suppressed RANKL-induced osteoclastogenesis by inhibiting NF-κB signaling pathway. As compared with the scaffolds without La³⁺ dopants, La-LDH scaffolds provided more favourable microenvironment to induce new bone in-growth along macroporous channels.

Conclusion: La-LDH nanohybrid scaffolds possessed the bi-directional regulation functions on osteogenesis and osteoclastogenesis for osteoporotic bone regeneration. The modification of La³⁺ dopants in bone scaffolds provides a novel strategy for osteoporosis-related bone defect healing.

Association between exposure of light rare earth elements and outcomes of in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer in North China

The adverse health effects of rare earth elements (REEs) on reproductive health remain a subject of debate, and few clinical observations are available. This study investigated the association between light REEs (LREEs) exposure and the outcome of in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET). We recruited a total of 305 women undergoing IVF-ET in Beijing City and Shandong Province of northern China. Their demographic information and lifestyle characteristics were collected using questionnaires at enrollment. Fasting blood samples were collected on the day before the IVF-ET treatment cycle began. Serum concentrations of the LREEs of concern were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, and four LREEs were measured with a high detection rate, including lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), praseodymium (Pr), and neodymium (Nd). We found that a higher serum La concentration was associated with a 30% increased likelihood of clinical pregnancy failure [relative risk (RR) = 1.30, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.00-1.67] and a 230% increased likelihood of preclinical spontaneous abortion (RR = 3.30, 95% CI: 1.57-6.94). There was a negative correlation between serum La concentration and the number of good-quality oocytes. For the other LREEs, no statistically significant associations were observed. We concluded that a high serum La concentration may have an adverse effect on IVF-ET outcomes.

Cytotoxic lanthanum oxide nanoparticles sensitize glioblastoma cells to radiation therapy and temozolomide: an in vitro rationale for translational studies

Glioblastoma (GBM) is a malignant brain tumour with a dismal prognosis, despite best treatment by surgical resection, radiation therapy (RT) and chemotherapy with temozolomide (TMZ). Nanoparticle (NP) therapy is an emerging consideration due to the ability of NPs to be formulated and cross the blood brain barrier. Lanthanum oxide (La2O3) NPs are therapeutically advantageous due to the unique chemical properties of lanthanum making it cytotoxic to cancers, and able to enhance existing anti-cancer treatments. However, La2O3 NPs have yet to be thoroughly investigated in brain tumors. We show that these NPs can reach the brain after venous injection, penetrate into GBM cells via endocytosis, dissociate to be cytotoxic, and enhance the therapeutic effects of RT and TMZ. The mechanisms of cell death by La2O3 NPs were found to be multifaceted. Increasing NP concentration was correlated to increased intrinsic and extrinsic apoptosis pathway markers in a radical oxygen species (ROS)-dependent manner, as well as involving direct DNA damage and autophagic pathways within GBM patient-derived cell lines. NP interactions to sensitize GBM to RT and TMZ were shown to involve these pathways by enhancing ROS and apoptotic mechanisms. We therefore demonstrate the therapeutic potential of La2O3 NPs to treat GBM cells in vitro, and encourage translational exploration in the future.

Lanthanum nanoparticles to target the brain: proof of biodistribution and biocompatibility with adjuvant therapies

Aim: To determine the biodistribution of lanthanum (III) oxide (La₂O₃) nanoparticle (NP) therapy to the brain and its biocompatibility with radiation therapy (RT) and chemotherapy (CT). Materials & methods: Healthy balb/c nude mice were administered 4 weekly doses of La₂O₃ NP therapy via tail vein injection. Organ weights and lanthanum concentrations were evaluated. Results: La₂O₃ NP penetrated the brain. Concentrations were found to peak in the brain at 24 h after injection and persisted at 8 weeks after injection. Neither RT nor CT affected biodistribution. No adverse events or safety concerns in other organs were noted. Conclusion: La₂O₃ NP can reach the brain to target neurological disease and is biocompatible with RT and CT in a biological system.

Adsorptive removal of lanthanum based on hydrothermally synthesized iron oxide-titanium oxide nanoparticles

Iron oxide-titanium oxide (Fe₂O₃-TiO₂) nanoparticles were developed as an effective adsorbent in order to extract and remove lanthanum ions selectively from aqueous media. Fe₂O₃-TiO₂ nanoparticles were prepared by simple hydrothermal method and structurally characterized using FESEM, EDS, XRD, FTIR, and BET techniques. The analytical potential of Fe₂O₃-TiO₂ nanoparticles was interpreted by applying the kinetic and isotherm models. The maximum static uptake capacity was 89.63 mgg^- 1 at pH 7. Adsorption isotherm data evinced that a monolayer adsorption occurred on a homogeneous adsorbent surface which is compatible with Langmuir isotherm model. Data acquired from kinetic models study proved that La (III) adsorption onto Fe₂O₃-TiO₂ nanoparticles followed a pseudo-second-order kinetic equation. Thermodynamic study exhibited that a spontaneous process is favorable for adsorption mechanism of La (III) on Fe₂O₃-TiO₂ nanoparticles. Moreover, the existence of different coexisting ions did not influence the extraction of La (III). Finally, the recommended methodology was applied on several environmental samples.

Prenatal exposure of rare earth elements cerium and ytterbium and neonatal thyroid stimulating hormone levels: Findings from a birth cohort study

BACKGROUND

Prior studies have suggested exposure to heavy metals and endocrine disrupting chemicals could disturb the homeostasis of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), but no epidemiology study concerning the influence of rare earth elements (REE) exposure during pregnancy on neonatal TSH levels. The present study aimed to investigate the relationships between prenatal REE exposure and neonatal TSH levels.

METHODS

A total of 7367 pregnant women were recruited from Wuhan Children's Hospital between September 2012 and October 2014 in Wuhan, China. Urinary concentrations of cerium (Ce), and ytterbium (Yb) were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Immunofluorescence assay was used to detect neonatal TSH levels. The associations between REE exposure and neonatal TSH levels were evaluated using multivariate linear regression models.

RESULTS

The geometric means of maternal urinary Ce and Yb concentrations were 0.060 μg/g creatinine and 0.025 μg/g creatinine, respectively. The results showed that per doubling of maternal urinary Ce and Yb were associated with 4.07% (95% CI: -5.80%, -2.31%), 5.13% (95% CI: -6.93%, -3.30%) decreased neonatal TSH levels respectively in the adjusted model. Sex stratified analysis demonstrated that the decreased neonatal TSH levels were observed both in male infants and female infants, and the decrease was greater in male infants in urinary Ce. There were no significant interactions between maternal urinary Ce, Yb and infant sex (Ce: P for interaction = 0.173, Yb: P for interaction = 0.967).

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings demonstrated that increased maternal urinary Ce and Yb were associated with decreased neonatal TSH levels. Further researches from different populations are warranted to verify the association and to explore the mechanisms.

Feathers of Humboldt penguin are suitable bioindicators of Rare Earth Elements

Rare earth elements (REEs), also called lanthanides, are emerging contaminants worldwide, due to their unique physical and chemical characteristics that make them essential in a variety of industrial applications. However, there is still a gap in the knowledge of occurrence and accumulation of REEs in biota, and no investigations have yet been performed in penguin feathers, which have already been widely utilized as a non-invasive tool for the biomonitoring of trace elements. The concentrations of 16 REEs were investigated in a colony of Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti) housed at the Acquario di Cattolica (Italy). Multielement determination of REEs was performed by an Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometer after a microwave digestion of feathers. As this colony lives indoors in a controlled environment, it was the ideal choice for studying lanthanide occurrence in penguin feathers. Since there is a strict link between metal levels in feathers and the diet of penguins, their food (capelin) was also tested for REEs. Chondrite normalized values revealed the same pattern for REEs in feathers and fish, but REE concentrations were an order of magnitude higher in penguin feathers, demonstrating the suitability of this tissue as a bioindicator of REEs.

Impacts of rare earth elements on animal health and production: Highlights of cerium and lanthanum

Because the use of antibiotics as growth promoters was banned due to global health concerns, researchers are focusing on exploring alternative safe and effective feed additives. Rare earth elements (REEs) are located in group III of the periodic table, which includes cerium (Ce), lanthanum (La), and other elements. Recently, REEs have been involved in many medical, industrial, zootechnical, and agricultural applications. They play a pivotal role in functional and structural molecules in the biological system. Currently, in veterinary practice, REEs have been introduced as new feed additives to improve animal health and production. Based on the previous literature, REEs reportedly enhance milk, egg, and meat production. However, the controversy between adverse (e.g., toxicological and ecotoxicological) and favourable REE-associated effects has not been fully discussed. This review summarizes the relevant literature on the impacts of REEs on animal production and health; specifically, this review emphasizes the application of REEs as alternative safe feed additives used to promote animal growth and performance.

Rare earth elements in marine and terrestrial matrices of Northwestern Italy: Implications for food safety and human health

Rare earth elements (REEs) are central in several critical technologies; their use is constantly increasing as is their release into the environment. For this reason, it is important to investigate REE concentrations in different matrices to evaluate human exposure and environmental risk of these emerging contaminants. REEs were measured by ICP-MS in matrices of terrestrial (plant feed, fruit, honey, wildlife livers) and marine origin (seaweeds, zooplankton, bivalves, fish) collected from Northwestern Italy. Highest REE concentrations were measured at low trophic levels, both in terrestrial and marine environments, such as plants (ΣREE 1.8 mg kg^-1) and seaweed (ΣREE 12 mg kg^-1), the major source of exposure and transfer of REEs to food webs. REE concentrations were several orders of magnitude lower in fruit, honey, and livers from terrestrial wildlife, suggesting a negligible risk of exposure by these matrices. Marine biota, such as bivalves (ΣREE 0.16 mg kg^-1) and fish (ΣREE 0.21 mg kg^-1) may constitute a pathway for human or animal dietary exposure. The study confirmed that REEs have low potential for biomagnification, but instead are subject to trophic dilution. However, given the numerous sources of dietary introduction of REEs, they should be monitored for a possible harmful cumulative effect. Owing to the scarcity of data regarding REEs worldwide, our results contribute to assessment of the occurrence of these emerging contaminants.

Human exposures to rare earth elements: Present knowledge and research prospects

The extensive use of rare earth elements (REEs) in a number of technologies is expected to impact on human health, including occupational and environmental REE exposures. A body of experimental evidence on REE-associated toxicity has been accumulated in recent decades, thus providing extensive background information on the adverse effects of REE exposures. Unlike experimental studies, the consequences of REE exposures to human health have been subjected to relatively fewer investigations. Geographical studies have been conducted on residents in REE mining districts, reporting on REE bioaccumulation, and associations between REE residential exposures and adverse health effects. A recent line of studies has associated tobacco smoking and indoor smoke with increased levels of some REEs in exposed residents. A body of literature has been focused on occupational REE exposures, with the observation of respiratory tract damage. The occupations related to REE mining and processing have shown REE bioaccumulation in scalp hair, excess REE urine levels, and defective gene expression. As for other REE occupational exposures, mention should be made of: a) jobs exposing to REE aerosol, such as movie operator; b) e-waste processing and, c) diesel engine repair and maintenance, with exposures to exhaust microparticulate (containing nanoCeO₂ as a catalytic additive). Diesel exhaust microparticulate has been studied in animal models, leading to evidence of several pathological effects in animals exposed by respiratory or systemic routes. A working hypothesis for REE occupational exposures is raised on REE-based supermagnet production and manufacture, by reviewing experimental studies that suggest several pathological effects of static magnetic fields, and warrant further investigations.
