Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study was to analyze the temporal and spatial trends of accidents involving venomous animals in Brazil during the pre- and COVID-19 pandemic periods. METHODS We conducted a population-based ecological study using comprehensive data from the Notifiable Diseases Information System, covering all accidents involving venomous animals in Brazil from January 2013 to December 2022. We did a temporospatial analysis to compare the incidence rates of accidents involving venomous animals per Brazilian municipality in the pre-pandemic period (January 2013 to February 2020) and the pandemic period (March 2020 to December 2022). To analyze the trend, the seasonal-trend model was used based on the classic additive decomposition model. For spatial distribution analysis, the Global Moran's Index was used. RESULTS A total of 2,202,842 cases of accidents involving venomous animals were recorded. Brazil showed an increasing trend from 2017 to 2019 (annual percentage change [APC]: 0.98, p<0.001) and a stable trend from 2020 to 2022 (APC: 0.42, p<0.080). The North (APC: 0.19, p<0.330), South (APC: 0.04, p<0.953), and Southeast (APC: 0.26, p<0.312) regions presented a stable trend from 2020 to 2022. Spatial dependence of smoothed rates was observed in both the pre-pandemic (Moran's I: 0.47; p=0.000) and COVID-19 pandemic periods (Moran's I: 0.50; p=0.000). CONCLUSION There was a stable trend in accidents involving venomous animals from 2020 to 2022 in Brazil. The spatial distribution of cases was heterogeneous for both periods studied.

Abstract
Background: We compared the enzymatic, coagulant, and neuromuscular activities of two variants (yellow-CDRy and white-CDRw) of Crotalus durissus ruruima venom with a sample of C. d. terrificus (CDT) venom and examined their neutralization by antivenom against CDT venom. Methods: The venoms were screened for enzymatic and coagulant activities using standard assays, and electrophoretic profiles were compared by SDS-PAGE. Neutralization was assessed by preincubating venoms with crotalic antivenom and assaying the residual activity. Results: SDS-PAGE showed that the venoms had similar electrophoretic profiles, with the main bands being phospholipase A2 (PLA2), serine proteinases, L-amino acid oxidase (LAAO), and phosphodiesterase. CDRy venom had the highest proteolytic and LAAO activities, CDRw venom had greater PLA2 and esterolytic activities at the highest quantity tested, and CDT had greater PLA2 activity than CDRy. CDRw and CDT venoms had similar proteolytic and LAAO activities, and CDRy and CDT venoms had comparable esterolytic activity. None of the venoms altered the prothrombin time (PT), but all of them decreased the activated partial thromboplastin time (aPPT); this activity was neutralized by antivenom. The minimum coagulant dose potency was CDRw >> CDRy > CDT. All venoms had thrombin-like activity that was attenuated by antivenom. CDRy and CDRw venoms showed α-fibrinogenolytic activity. All venoms partially cleaved the β-chain. CDRy and CDT venoms caused neuromuscular facilitation (enhanced muscle contractions) followed by complete blockade, whereas CDRw venom caused only blockade. Antivenom neutralized the neuromuscular activity to varying degrees. Conclusions: These findings indicate that while CDR and CDT venoms share similarities, they also differ in some enzymatic and biological activities and in neutralization by antivenom. Some of these differences could influence the clinical manifestations of envenomation by C. d. ruruima and their neutralization by the currently used therapeutic antivenom.

Abstract
The state of Paraná is home to three out of the five medically significant snake genera in Brazil and lacks of snakebite epidemiology studies. This study aimed to ascertain the spatial, environmental, and socioeconomic factors associated with snakebite risk by analyzing notification data of cases in the state of Paraná. Notification and socioeconomic data were gathered from the online platforms of the National System of Notifiable Diseases (SINAN) and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Land cover and land use maps were obtained from the Mapbiomas platform in raster format and subsequently converted into vectors using QGis software. The proportions of land use and land cover in square kilometers (km2) were then calculated. All acquired data were tabulated using Microsoft Excel 365 software. For spatial analysis, GeoDa software version 1.20 was utilized to calculate the Global and Local Moran indices, assessing spatial correlations. Between 2007 and 2021, 12,877 notifications were recorded, with an average incidence of 8.22/100,000 inhabitants in the state, 8166 (63.41%) caused by Bothrops, 1534 (11.91%) caused by Crotalus, 56 (0.43%) caused by Micrurus. 1703 (13.22%) caused by non-venomous snake species, and the remaining cases did not have the identified causative species. The incidents caused by Bothrops and Crotalus showed different distribution patterns. Spatial analysis revealed that key factors contributing to snakebite risk included the presence of native forests, mangroves, apicuns, and monospecific planted forests. The population group at the highest risk comprised rural residents and workers. Furthermore, the absence of basic sanitation and proper garbage collection and disposal exhibited positive correlations with snakebites. Conversely, intensive farming practices with substantial mechanization and pastures demonstrated negative spatial correlations. This study has enabled the identification of the primary factors associated with snakebite risk, facilitating more targeted efforts to prevent snakebite accidents among vulnerable populations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Brazil ranks first in the number of snakebites in South America. A detailed analysis of these cases is required to improve the public health planning. In this study, we retrospectively examined the clinical and epidemiological profiles of snakebites in Maranhão between January 2009 and December 2019. METHODS Data were obtained from the compulsory notification forms provided by the Health Department of Maranhão. RESULTS A total of 17,658 cases were recorded during the study period. Most of the bites were from snakes belonging to the genus Bothrops. Medical care was mostly within three hours after the bite. Most cases were classified as mild and most victims recovered; however, 139 deaths were recorded. Most bites occurred among people aged 20-39 years, mainly among rural workers. The most frequent local clinical manifestations were pain, edema, and ecchymosis. The most common systemic clinical manifestations include neuroparalysis, vagal syndrome, and myolysis. Most snakebites occurred between January and March. The municipalities with the highest number of notifications were Buriticupu (936 cases), Arame (705 cases), and Grajaú (627 cases). CONCLUSIONS The clinical profile of snakebites in Maranhão is similar to that observed in other states of Northeast Brazil. However, we found that some systemic manifestations are not compatible with the etiology of snakebites, which leads us to believe that the problem could be the lack of knowledge of the health professionals at the site of envenomation, who may not be ready for attendance, and an important lack of health centers with snake antivenom to treat snakebites.

Abstract
The Peruvian rattlesnake Crotalus durissus is a venomous species that is restricted to the Peruvian Departments of Puno and Madre de Dios. Although clinically meaningful in this region, Crotalus durissus venom composition remains largely elusive. In this sense, this work aimed to provide a primary description of Peruvian C. durissus venom (PCdV). The enzymatic activities (SVMP, SVSP, LAAO, Hyaluronidase and PLA2) of PCdV were analyzed and compared to Brazilian Crotalus durissus terrificus venom (BCdtV). PCdV showed higher PLA2 activity when compared to the Brazilian venom. PCdV also showed cytotoxicity in VERO cells. For proteomic analysis, PCdV proteins were separated by HPLC, followed by SDS-PAGE. Gel bands were excised and tryptic digested for MALDI-TOF/TOF identification. Approximately 21 proteins were identified, belonging to 7 families. Phospholipases A2 (PLA2, 66.63%) were the most abundant proteins of the venom, followed by snake venom serine proteinases (SVSPs, 13.37%), C-type lectins (Snaclec, 8.98%) and snake venom metalloproteinases (SVMPs, 7.13%), crotamine (2.98%) and phosphodiesterase (PDE, 0.87%). Moreover, antivenom recognition assays indicated that both Brazilian and Peruvian antivenoms recognize PCdV, indicating the presence of antigenically related proteins in crotalic venoms. The results reported here, may impact in the venom selection for the production of effective Pan-American crotalic antivenom.

Abstract
Bites of "nonvenomous" snakes can sometimes be mistaken for the bites of venomous snakes. As an example of this confusion, this report describes confirmed bites by Philodryas olfersii and Bothrops jararaca. In the first case, a 55-y-old man with a history of controlled hypertension was bitten on his right forearm by P olfersii. Physical examination revealed extensive edema, erythema, and widespread ecchymoses throughout his right upper limb. Laboratory tests indicated leukocytosis and high D-dimer levels, but normal coagulation, suggestive of a resolved recent coagulopathy. He received only supportive treatment. In the second case, a healthy 35-y-old man was bitten by B jararaca. Although the anatomic region of the bite and the results of physical examination were similar to those in the first case, laboratory tests showed mild coagulopathy, leukocytosis, and high D-dimer levels. The patient was treated with antivenom. In both cases, the 20-min whole blood clotting test results were normal. Patients bitten by P olfersii may present with local symptoms resembling B jararaca envenomation. Without snake identification and the detection of venom-induced consumption coagulopathy, especially in places where the 20-min whole blood clotting test is the only clotting test available, it is almost impossible to establish an accurate and safe differential diagnosis. In this context, the best alternative is to take the risk of prescribing antivenom for a possible P olfersii bite rather than failing to do so for a real Bothrops bite. Late treatment for Bothrops bite can result in severe complications and sequelae.

Abstract
Crotalus durissus ruruima is a rattlesnake subspecies mainly found in Roraima, the northernmost state of Brazil. Envenomings caused by this subspecies lead to severe clinical manifestations (e.g. respiratory muscle paralysis, rhabdomyolysis, and acute renal failure) that can lead to the victim’s death. In this review, we comprehensively describe C. d. ruruima biology and the challenges this subspecies poses for human health, including morphology, distribution, epidemiology, venom cocktail, clinical envenoming, and the current and future specific treatment of envenomings by this snake. Moreover, this review presents maps of the distribution of the snake subspecies and evidence that this species is responsible for some of the most severe envenomings in the country and causes the highest lethality rates.
