Abstract
BACKGROUND Silkworm (Bombyx moil L.) Pupa protein (SPP) is a high-quality insect protein and is considered a sustainable alternative source for traditional animal food protein. However, the utilization of SPP is limited because of its low solubility and emulsifying ability. In the present study, the synergistic effect of hydration and pulsed ultrasound on the physicochemical properties of SPP and SPP-stabilized Pickering emulsions was evaluated. RESULTS Pulsed ultrasound changed the particle size of SPP and its conformation. As the pulsed ultrasound increased from 0 s to 5 s, the α-helix and SS contents of SPP decreased, whereas the β-sheet and SH contents increased, which in turn improved its solubility and amphiphilicity. As a result, the SPP treated by a combination of 12 h of hydration and 3 s of ultrasound exhibited a contact angle of 74.95°, hydrophobicity of 904.83, EAI of 6.66 m2 g-1 and ESI of 190.69 min. Compared with the combination of 1 h of hydration and 5 s of ultrasound, the combination of 12 h of hydration and 3 s of ultrasound exerted more soluble and hydrophobic SPP, whereas the EAI and ESI of the samples were higher. Notably, the ultrasound-treated SPP can form a stable gel-like emulsion (oil fraction ranging from 70% to 80%). CONCLUSION The combination of hydration and ultrasound can effectively improve the physicochemical characteristics of SPP as well as its emulsion stability. Sufficient hydration is a cost-effective method for facilitating the modification of proteins by ultrasound treatment. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
To improve the protein dissolution rate and the quality of fresh Lycium barbarum pulp (LBP), we optimized the slit dual-frequency ultrasound-assisted pulping process, explored the dissolution kinetics of Lycium barbarum protein (LBPr), and established a near-infrared spectroscopy in situ real-time monitoring model for LBPr dissolution through spectral information analysis and chemometric methods. The results showed that under optimal conditions (dual-frequency 28-33 kHz, 300 W, 31 min, 40 °C, interval ratio 5:2 s/s), ultrasonic treatment not only significantly increased LBPr dissolution rate (increased by 71.48 %, p < 0.05), improved other nutrient contents and color, but also reduced the protein particle size, changed the amino acid composition ratio and protein structure, and increased the surface hydrophobicity, zeta potential, and free sulfhydryl content of protein, as well as the antioxidant activity of LBPr. In addition, ultrasonication significantly improved the functional properties of the protein, including thermal stability, foaming, emulsification and oil absorption capacity. Furthermore, the real-time monitoring model of the dissolution process was able to quantitatively predict the dissolution rate of LBPr with good calibration and prediction performance (Rc = 0.9835, RMSECV = 2.174, Rp = 0.9841, RMSEP = 1.206). These findings indicated that dual-frequency ultrasound has great potential to improve the quality of LBP and may provide a theoretical basis for the establishment of an intelligent control system in the industrialized production of LBP and the functional development of LBPr.

Abstract
Cinnamaldehyde has been widely applied in various fields due to its special flavor and various pharmacological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. The strategy of quick and efficient enrichment for cinnamaldehyde is imperative. In this study, an electroosmotic coupled particle-assisted solvent flotation (ECPASF) system was designed for the cinnamaldehyde enrichment from cinnamon. The response surface method was used to optimize extraction parameters. Under optimal operating conditions, its yield was 9.33 ± 0.11 mg/g. Such high yield of cinnamaldehyde using the ECPASF might be because electroosmosis effectively alters the permeability of plant cells, which facilitates the release of cinnamaldehyde. In addition, both the crude extract of cinnamon and pure cinnamaldehyde showed good antioxidant activity. The results demonstrated that the ECPASF system is a sustainable and effective method for the extraction of cinnamaldehyde from cinnamon. It also has the prospect of being extended to the extraction of other natural products.

Abstract
Microalgae have characteristics that make them unique and full of potential. Their capacity to generate interesting bioactive molecules can add value to various industrial applications. However, most of these valuable compounds are intracellular, which makes their extraction a major bottleneck. Conventional extraction methodologies have some drawbacks, such as low eco-friendly character, high costs and energy demand, long treatment times, low selectivity and reduced extraction yields, as well as degradation of extracted compounds. The gaps found for these methods demonstrate that emergent approaches, such as ohmic heating, pulsed electric fields, ionic liquids, deep eutectic solvents, or high-pressure processing, show potential to overcome the current drawbacks in the release and extraction of added-value compounds from microalgae. These new processing techniques can potentially extract a variety of compounds, making the process more profitable and applicable to large scales. This review provides an overview of the most important and promising factors to consider in the extraction methodologies applied to microalgae. Additionally, it delivers broad knowledge of the present impact of these methods on biomass and its compounds, raising the possibility of applying them in an integrated manner within a biorefinery concept.

Abstract
The increase in global temperature calls for ambitious action to reduce the release of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. The transportation sector contributes up to 25% of the total emissions released, mainly from the burning of vehicle fuel. Therefore, scientists from all around the world are focusing on finding a sustainable alternative to conventional vehicle fuel. Biofuel has attracted much attention, as it shows great potential for the replacement of traditional fossil fuels. However, the main bottlenecks of biofuel are the ongoing controversial conflict between food security with biofuel production. Therefore, this study focuses on a sustainable extraction of lipids from microalgae for the production of biofuel using a liquid biphasic flotation system coupled with sugaring-out method. This is the first study to combine the methods of liquid biphasic flotation system with the sugaring-out technique. It represents a holistic study of optimum and effective conditions needed to extract lipids from the system and to understand the reliability of sugar solution as the agent of cell disruption. At the 15-min flotation time, 150 g/L of fructose solution with a 1:2 mass separating agent-acetonitrile ratio successfully extracted up to 74% of lipid from Chlorella sorokiniana CY-1. Two types of fatty acid methyl esters were recovered from the study, with C5:0 being the main component extracted.

Abstract
Overgrowth of microalgae will result in harmful algae blooms that can affect the aquatic ecosystem and human health. Therefore, the quantitation of chlorophyll pigments can be used as an indicator of algae bloom. However, it is difficult to monitor the geographical and temporal distribution of chlorophyll in the aquatic environment. Accordingly, an innovative and inexpensive method based on the red-green-blue (RGB) image analysis was utilized in this study to estimate the microalgae chlorophyll content. The digital images were acquired using a smartphone camera. The colour index was then evaluated using software and associated with chlorophyll concentration significantly. A regression model, using RGB colour components as independent variables to estimate chlorophyll concentration, was developed and validated. The Green in the RGB index was the most promising way to estimate chlorophyll concentration in microalgae. The result showed that acetone was the best extractant solvent with a high R-squared value among the four extractant solvents. Next, the isolation of useful biomolecules, such as proteins, fatty acids, polysaccharides and antioxidants from the microalgae, has been recognized as an alternative to regulating algae bloom. Microalgae are shown to produce bioactive compounds with a variety of biological activities that can be applied in various industries. This study evaluates the biochemical composition of mixed microalgae species, Desmodesmus sp. and Scenedesmus sp. using the liquid triphasic partitioning (TPP) system. The findings from analytical assays revealed that the biomass consisted of varied concentrations of carbohydrates, protein, and lipids. Phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity were at 60.22 mg/L and 90.69%, respectively.

Abstract
Proteins from alternative sources including terrestrial and aquatic plants, microbes and insects are being increasingly explored to combat the dietary, environmental and ethical challenges linked primarily to conventional sources of protein, mainly meat and dairy proteins. Ultrasound (US) technologies have emerged as a clean, green and efficient methods for the extraction of proteins from alternative sources compared to conventional methods. However, the application of US can also lead to modifications of the proteins extracted from alternative sources, including changes in their nutritional quality (protein content, amino acid composition, protein digestibility, anti-nutritional factors) and allergenicity, as well as damage of the compounds associated with an increased degradation resulting from extreme US processing conditions. This work aims to summarise the main advances in US equipment currently available to date, including the main US parameters and their effects on the extraction of protein from alternative sources, as well as the studies available on the effects of US processing on the nutritional value, allergenicity and degradation damage of these alternative protein ingredients. The main research gaps identified in this work and future challenges associated to the widespread application of US and their scale-up to industry operations are also covered in detail.

Abstract
Buriti (Mauritia flexuosa L.) is a significant source of carotenoids, but these compounds have been extracted using laborious and low-effective methods. The present work evaluated the high-intensity ultrasound combined with a chemometric approach to developing an optimal extraction method of carotenoids from buriti pulp. The multivariate optimization was carried out through two steps. First, a simplex-lattice mixture design was used to optimize the extractor solution finding higher extraction yield (903 ± 21 µg g-1) with the acetone:ethanol (75/25) mixture. After, sample mass (80 mg) and sonication time (30 min) were optimized applying central composite design (CCD) which provided a 14% improvement in the extraction method yield. So, the total carotenoid content (TCC) with optimal extraction conditions was 1026 ± 13 µg g-1which is almost twice the yield of methods known in the literature for buriti. The RP-HPLC-DAD analysis revealed that the carotenoids are gently extracted and β-carotene is the major compound in the extracts. To confirm the accuracy, buriti samples spiked with β-carotene standard and the developed method showed recovery >84% and precision <6.5%. Furthermore, the optimized ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) method was applied to other samples (tomato, guava, carrot, mango, acerola, papaya, and pumpkin) and presented a yield to 5.5-fold higher when compared to the reported methods indicating high robustness. Based on results, the UAE method developed has demonstrated feasibility and reliability for the study of carotenoids in buriti pulp as well as in other plant matrices with high biological relevance.

Abstract
Microalgae are a promising feedstock for the production of biofuels, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals and cosmetics, due to their superior capability of converting solar energy and CO2 into lipids, proteins, and other valuable bioactive compounds. To facilitate the release of these important biomolecules from microalgae, effective cell disruption is usually necessary, where the use of ultrasound has gained tremendous interests as an alternative to traditional methods. This review not only summarizes the mechanisms of and operation parameters affecting cell disruption, but also takes an insight into measuring techniques, synergistic integration with other disruption methods, and challenges of ultrasonication for microalgal biorefining. Optimal conditions including ultrasonic frequency, intensity, and duration, and liquid viscosity and sonochemical reactor are the key factors for maximizing the disruption and extraction efficiency. A combination of ultrasound with other disruption methods such as ozonation, microwave, homogenization, enzymatic lysis, and solvents facilitates cell disruption and release of target compounds, thus provides powerful solutions to commercial scale-up of ultrasound extraction for microalgal biorefining. It is concluded that ultrasonication is a sustainable "green" process, but more research and work are needed to upscale this process without sacrificing performance or consuming more energy.

Abstract
This work aimed to optimize the parameters affecting partitioning of a bacteriocin-like inhibitory substances (BLIS) from Lactococcus lactis Gh1 in extractive fermentation using polyethylene glycol (PEG)/dextran aqueous two-phase system (ATPS). This system was developed for the simultaneous cell cultivation and downstream processing of BLIS. Results showed that the molecular weight of PEG, PEG concentration, and dextran T500 affect the partition coefficient (K), purification factor (PF), and yield of BLIS partitioning. ATPS composed of 10% (w/w) PEG2000 and 8% (w/w) dextran T500, provided the greatest conditions for the extractive BLIS production. The K (1.00 ± 0.16), PF (2.92 ± 0.37) and yield (77.24 ± 2.81%) were increased at selected orbital speed (200 rpm) and pH (pH 7). Sustainable growth of the cells in the bioreactor and repeated fermentation up to the eighth extractive batch were observed during the scale up process, ensuring a continuous production and purification of BLIS. Hence, the simplicity and effectiveness of ATPS in the purification of BLIS were proven in this study.

Abstract
Wastewater management and its treatment have revolutionized the industry sector into many innovative techniques. However, the cost of recycling via chemical treatment has major issues especially in economically poor sectors. On the offset, one of the most viable and economical techniques to clean wastewater is by growing microalgae in it. Since wastewater is rich in nitrates, phosphates and other trace elements, the environment is suitable for the growth of microalgae. On the other side, the cost of harvesting microalgae for its secondary metabolites is burgeoning. While simultaneously growing of microalgae in photobioreactors requires regular feeding of the nutrients and maintenance which increases the cost of operation and hence cost of its end products. The growth of microalgae in waste waters makes the process not only economical but they also manufacture more amounts of value added products. However, harvesting of these values added products is still a cumbersome task. On the offset, it has been observed that pretreating the microalgal biomass with ultrasonication allows easy oozing of the secondary metabolites like oil, proteins, carbohydrates and methane at much lower cost than that required for their extraction. Among microalgae diatoms are more robust and have immense crude oil and are rich in various value added products. However, due to their thick silica walls they do not ooze the metabolites until the mechanical force on their walls reaches certain threshold energy. In this review recycling of wastewater using microalgae and its pretreatment via ultrasonication with special reference to diatoms is critically discussed. Perspectives on circular bioeconomy and knowledge gaps for employing microalgae to recycle wastewater have been comprehensively narrated.

Abstract
The increase in life expectancy has led to the appearance of chronic diseases and interest in healthy aging, in turn promoting a growing interest in bioactive compounds (BCs) and functional ingredients. There are certain foods or products rich in functional ingredients, and algae are one of them. Algae consumption has been nominal in Europe until now. However, in recent years, it has grown significantly, partly due to globalization and the adoption of new food trends. With the aim of obtaining BCs from foods, multiple methods have been proposed, ranging from conventional ones, such as maceration or Soxhlet extraction, to more innovative methods, e.g., ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE). UAE constitutes a novel method, belonging to so-called green chemistry, that enables the extraction of BCs requiring lower amounts of solvent and energy costs, preserving the integrity of such molecules. In recent years, this method has been often used for the extraction of different BCs from a wide range of algae, especially polysaccharides, such as carrageenans and alginate; pigments, including fucoxanthin, chlorophylls, or β-carotene; and phenolic compounds, among others. In this way, the application of UAE to marine algae is an efficient and sustainable strategy to pursue their deep characterization as a new source of BCs, especially suitable for vegetarian and vegan diets.

Abstract
Microalgae are potential sustainable renewable sources of energy but are highly underutilized due to the expensive and time-consuming downstream processing. This study aims at curbing these obstacles by extracting multiple components with a single processing unit. In this work, an ultrasound-assisted liquid triphasic flotation system was incorporated to extract proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates by phase separation. The parameters involved were optimized and the final recovery efficiency of proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates was determined. A control run involving conventional three-phase partitioning and a 15-fold scale-up system with the recycling of phase components were also performed. Gas Chromatograph and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy were used to examine the potential of extracted products as a source of biofuel. This biorefinery approach is crucial in commercializing microalgae for biodiesel and bioethanol generation with a side product of purified proteins as feed.

Abstract
The work aimed to study the potential in producing a system with high microalgal protein recovery and separation by utilizing a one-step or integrated downstream process. This in turn enables green biorefinery of protein, contributing to circular bioeconomy whereby less energy, labor, and cost are required for the process. By utilizing electric three phase partitioning flotation system, high protein recovery yield, R of 99.42 ± 0.52% and high separation efficiency, E of 52.72 ± 0.40% system was developed. Scaling up also showed high protein recovery yield with R value of 89.13 ± 1.56%. Total processing duration (extraction, separation, and purification) was also significantly reduced to 10 min. This system showed remarkable potential in reducing processing time, alternatively cost of production, benefiting microalgal downstream processing. Concisely, through this system, microalgal bioprocessing will no longer be complex allowing a wide array of potentials for further studies in this field.

Abstract
There is growing consumer demand for food products derived from microalgae, driven largely by the perceived health benefits associated with them. The functional and bioactive potential of proteins isolated from two microalgae—Spirulina sp. and Isochrysis galbana T-Iso—were determined. The results obtained show the potential of microalgal protein extracts for use in the beverage industry, based on solubility values and other functional characteristics, including water and oil holding capacities, foaming, emulsifying activities and stabilities, water activities, solubility and pH. The solubility of algal proteins was pH-dependent, and they were largely insoluble at pH values between 2 and 11. However, the proteins were increasingly soluble at a pH of 12, and they have potential use in formulating foods with higher viscosities or gels, where they could act as fillers to strengthen networks. Compared with whey and flaxseed proteins, the Spirulina sp. protein extract had a superior oil-holding capacity (OHC). The OHC is important in developing texture in food products such as meats. Overall, better foam stability was observed for both Spirulina sp. and Isochrysis sp. soluble protein extracts, compared with flaxseed protein at pH values from 2 to 10 over a period of 120 min. The foam capacity and stability increase the physical properties of foods. However, the emulsion activity and stability values for soluble algal protein extracts were less than the values observed for flaxseed and whey proteins. Algal proteins would not be suitable for use in creaming and food processing involving flocculation. In addition, algal protein extracts inhibited Angiotensin-converting enzyme-I (ACE-I) and renin, and they have potential for use in functional food ingredient applications to maintain heart health and also to act as meat substitutes.

Abstract
One of the main goals of Mankind is to ensure food system sustainability-including management of land, soil, water, and biodiversity. Microalgae accordingly appear as an innovative and scalable alternative source in view of the richness of their chemical profiles. In what concerns lipids in particular, microalgae can synthesize and accumulate significant amounts of fatty acids, a great fraction of which are polyunsaturated; this makes them excellent candidates within the framework of production and exploitation of lipids by various industrial and health sectors, either as bulk products or fine chemicals. Conventional lipid extraction methodologies require previous dehydration of microalgal biomass, which hampers economic feasibility due to the high energy demands thereof. Therefore, extraction of lipids directly from wet biomass would be a plus in this endeavor. Supporting processes and methodologies are still limited, and most approaches are empirical in nature-so a deeper mechanistic elucidation is a must, in order to facilitate rational optimization of the extraction processes. Besides circumventing the current high energy demands by dehydration, an ideal extraction method should be selective, sustainable, efficient, harmless, and feasible for upscale to industrial level. This review presents and discusses several pretreatments incurred in lipid extraction from wet microalga biomass, namely recent developments and integrated processes. Unfortunately, most such developments have been proven at bench-scale only-so demonstration in large facilities is still needed to confirm whether they can turn into competitive alternatives.

Abstract
There is an emergent demand for sustainable and alternative protein sources such as insects and microorganisms that meet the nutritional requirements. Microalgae possess valuable substances that could satisfy the population's dietary requirement, medicinal purpose, and energy, aligned with effective processing techniques. Several disruption techniques were applied to microalgae species for protein recovery and other compounds. The thick microalgae cell wall makes it difficult to recover all the valuable biomolecules through several downstream processes. Thus, forethought key factors need to be considered when choosing a cell lysis method. The most challenging and crucial issue is selecting a technique that requires consideration of their ability to disrupt all cell types, easy to use, purity degree, reproducible, scalable, and energy efficient. This review aims to provide useful information specifically on mechanical and non-mechanical disruption methods, the status and potential in protein extraction capacities, and constraints. Therefore, further attention in the future on potential technologies, namely explosive decompression, microfluidization, pulsed arc technology, is required to supplement the discussed techniques. This article summarizes recent advances in cell disruption methods and demonstrates insights on new directions of the techniques and future developments.

Abstract
The ever-expanding human population puts tremendous pressure on global food security. With climate change threats lowering crop productivity and food nutritional quality, it is important to search for alternative and sustainable food sources. Microalgae are a promising carbon-neutral biomass with fast growth rate and do not compete with terrestrial crops for land use. More so, microalgae synthesize exclusive marine carotenoids shown to not only exert antioxidant activities but also anti-cancer properties. Unfortunately, the conventional method for fucoxanthin extraction is mainly based on solvent extraction, which is cheap but less environmentally friendly. With the emergence of greener extraction techniques, the extraction of fucoxanthin could adopt these strategies aligned to UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This is a timely review with a focus on existing fucoxanthin extraction processes, complemented with future outlook on the potential and limitations in alternative fucoxanthin extraction technologies. This review will serve as an important guide to the sustainable and environmentally friendly extraction of fucoxanthin and other carotenoids including but not limited to astaxanthin, lutein or zeaxanthin. This is aligned to the SDGs wherein it is envisaged that this review becomes an antecedent to further research work in extract standardization with the goal of meeting quality control and quality assurance benchmarks for future commercialization purposes.

Abstract
The purpose of this investigation is to evaluate the implementation of ultrasound-assisted liquid biphasic flotation (LBF) system for the recovery of natural astaxanthin from Haematococcus pluvialis microalgae. Various operating conditions of ultrasound-assisted LBF systems such as the position of ultrasound horn, mode of ultrasonication (pulse and continuous), amplitude of ultrasonication, air flowrate, duration of air flotation, and mass of H. pluvialis microalgae were evaluated. The effect of ultrasonication on the cellular morphology of microalgae was also assessed using microscopic analysis. Under the optimized operating conditions of UALBF, the maximum recovery yield, extraction efficiency, and partition coefficient of astaxanthin were 95.08 ± 3.02%, 99.74 ± 0.05%, and 185.09 ± 4.78, respectively. In addition, the successful scale-up operation of ultrasound-assisted LBF system verified the practicability of this integrated approach for an effective extraction of natural astaxanthin.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to study the ultrasonication-assisted Liquid Tri-phasic Flotation (LTF) System to obtain lipid and protein from microalgae Chlorella sorokiniana in a single step as a novel process. In the current study, biorefinery of Chlorella sorokiniana was performed using LTF system in a single step. The highest protein recovery of 97.43 ± 1.67% and lipid recovery of 69.50 ± 0.54% were obtained. The corresponding parameters were microalgae biomass loading of 0.5 w/v%, ammonium sulphate concentration of 40 w/v%, volume ratio of 1:1.5 (salt:alcohol), ultrasonication pulse mode of 20 s ON/20 s OFF at 20% amplitude for 5 mins, flotation air flowrate of 100 mL/min. Additionally, recycling of alcohol phase to study the circular nature of proposed biorefinery was investigated. The proposed LTF system for extraction of proteins and lipid reduces the number of operation units required in this biorefinery approach.

Abstract
Pretreatment of microalgal biomass possessing rigid cell wall is a critical step for enhancing the efficiency of microalgal biorefinery. However, the conventional pretreatment processes suffer the drawbacks of complex processing steps, long processing time, low conversion efficiency and high processing costs. This significantly hinders the industrial applicability of microalgal biorefinery. The innovative electricity-aid pretreatment techniques serve as a promising processing tool to extensively enhance the release of intracellular substances from microalgae. In this review, application of electric field-based techniques and recent advances of using electrical pretreatments on microalgae cell focusing on pulsed electric field, electrolysis, high voltage electrical discharges and moderate electric field are reviewed. In addition, the emerging techniques integrating electrolysis with liquid biphasic flotation process as promising downstream approach is discussed. This review delivers broad knowledge of the present significance of the application of these methods focusing on the development of electric assisted biomolecules extraction from microalgae.

Abstract
Interest in microalgae-derived products is growing, mostly due to their unique characteristics and range of industrial applications. To obtain different products, one must employ specific pretreatments that retain the properties of the biologically active compounds extracted from microalgae biomass; thus, new extraction techniques require frequent upgrades. Due to increased interest in economically viable and ecologically friendly processes, new extraction methods that can be incorporated into microalgae biorefinery systems have become the main focus of research. Therefore, this review aims to address the potential applications, future prospects, and economic scenario of the new physicochemical treatments used in the extraction of bioactive microalgae compounds.

Abstract
A well-known bioseparation technique namely liquid biphasic system (LBS) has attracted many researchers’ interest for being an alternative bioseparation technology for various kinds of biomolecules. The present review begins with an in-depth discussion on the fundamental principle of LBS and this is followed by the discussion on further development of various phase-forming components in LBS. Additionally, the implementation of various advance technologies to the LBS that is beneficial towards the efficiency of LBS for the extraction, separation, and purification of biomolecules was discussed. The key parameters affecting the LBS were presented and evaluated. Moreover, future prospect and challenges were highlighted to be a useful guide for future development of LBS. The efforts presented in this review will provide an insight for future researches in liquid-liquid separation techniques.

Abstract
Microalgae constitute relatively novel source of lipids for biodiesel production. The economy of this process can be enhanced by the recovery of β-carotenes present in the microalgal cells. The present study has addressed matter of enhancement of lipids and β-carotene production by microalgal species of Tetradesmus obliquus SGM19 with the application of sonication. As first step, the growth cycle of Tetradesmus obliquus SGM19 was optimized using statistical experimental design. Optimum parameters influencing microalgal growth were: Sodium nitrate = 1.5 g/L, ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid = 0.001 g/L, temperature = 28.5 °C, pH = 7.5, light intensity = 5120 lux, β-carotene yield = 0.67 mg/g DCW. Application of 33 kHz and 1.4 bar ultrasound at 10% duty cycle was revealed to enhance the lipid and β-carotene yields by 34.5% and 31.5%, respectively. Kinetic analysis of substrate and product profiles in control and test experiments revealed both lipid and β-carotene to be growth-associated products. The intracellular NAD(H) content during late log phase was monitored in control and test experiments as a measure of relative kinetics of intracellular metabolism. Consistently higher NAD(H) concentrations were observed for test experiments; indicating faster metabolism. Finally, the viability of ultrasound-exposed microalgal cells (assessed with flow cytometry) was >80%.

Abstract
Oleaginous algae are nowadays of significance for industrial biotechnology applications and for the welfare of society. Tremendous efforts have been put into the development of economically feasible and effective downstream processing techniques in algae research. Currently, Liquid Biphasic Systems (LBSs) are receiving much attention from academia and industry for their potential as green and effective downstream processing methods. This article serves to review the applications of LBSs (LBS and Liquid Biphasic Flotation System (LBFS)) in the separation, recovery and purification of algae products, as well as their basic working principles. Moreover, cell disruptive technologies incorporated into LBSs in algae research are reported. This review provides insights into the downstream processing in algae industrial biotechnology which could be beneficial for algae biorefinement.

Abstract
Microalgae biomass has been consumed as animal feed, fish feed and in human diet due to its high nutritional value. In this experiment, microalgae specie of Chlorella Vulgaris FSP-E was utilized for protein extraction via simple sugaring-out assisted liquid biphasic electric flotation system. The external electric force provided to the two-phase system assists in disruption of rigid microalgae cell wall and releases the contents of microalgae cell. This experiment manipulates various parameters to optimize the set-up. The liquid biphasic electric flotation set-up is compared with a control liquid biphasic flotation experiment without the electric field supply. The optimized separation efficiency of the liquid biphasic electric flotation system was 73.999 ± 0.739% and protein recovery of 69.665 ± 0.862% compared with liquid biphasic flotation, the separation efficiency was 61.584 ± 0.360% and protein recovery was 48.779 ± 0.480%. The separation efficiency and protein recovery for 5 × time scaled-up system was observed at 52.871 ± 1.236% and 73.294 ± 0.701%. The integration of simultaneous cell-disruption and protein extraction ensures high yield of protein from microalgae. This integrated method for protein extraction from microalgae demonstrated its potential and further research can lead this technology to commercialization.
