Abstract
The study aims to research the effects of varied dietary sources of n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) on the immune response in broiler chickens with stress on natural killer (NK) cell activity. Diets supplemented with one of the four sources of n-3 PUFA: linseed oil-, echium oil-, fish oil (FO) or algal biomass-enriched diets at levels of 18, 18, 50 and 15 g/kg fresh weight, were provided for one-d-old male Ross 308 broilers, totaling 340 in number, until they were slaughtered. The analyses included total lipid profile using gas chromatography (GC) for plasma, spleen, thymus, and blood. Additionally, NK cell activity and cell proliferation were investigated for thymocytes and splenocytes. The results indicated that the source of n-3 PUFA had a strong influence on fatty acid composition across all tissues. NK activity was highest in splenocytes and PBMCs from broilers fed linseed oil, followed by those fed algal biomass or echium oil, and lowest for those from broilers fed FO. The proliferative response of lymphocytes from algal biomass-fed chickens tended to be the highest, followed by those fed linseed oil in most cases. Lymphocytes from chickens fed fish oil showed the lowest proliferative response. These results could mean that a docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-rich algal product might enrich chicken meat with n-3 PUFA without significant damaging effects on chicken immunity.

Abstract
Moringa oleifera is a plant whose fruits, roots and leaves have been advocated for traditional medicinal uses. The physicochemical analysis shows that Moringa oleifera contains more dietary polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) than saturated fatty acids (SFA). The consumption of an experimental diet enriched with Moringa oleifera extracts lowered blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), but not in normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats as compared to rats fed an unsupplemented control diet. Anti-CD3-stimulated T cell proliferation was diminished in both strains of rats fed the Moringa oleifera. The experimental diet lowered secretion of interleukin-2 in SHR, but not in WKY rats compared with rats fed the control diet. Studies of platelets from patients with primary hypertension and from SHR support the notion that the concentration of intracellular free calcium [Ca(2+)](i) is modified in both clinical and experimental hypertension. We observed that the basal, [Ca(2+)](i) was lower in T cells of SHR than in those of WKY rats fed the control diet. Feeding the diet with Moringa oleifera extracts to WKY rats did not alter basal [Ca(2+)](i) in T cells but increased basal [Ca(2+)](i) in SHR. Our study clearly demonstrated that Moringa oleifera exerts antihypertensive effects by inhibiting the secretion of IL-2 and modulates T cell calcium signaling in hypertensive rats.

Abstract
Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA), especially the balance between arachidonic (AA) and docosahexaenoic (DHA) acids are known to have important immunomodulatory roles during the postnatal period when the immune system is rapidly developing. AA and DHA are required in infant formula in many countries but are optional in North America. The rationale for adding these LCPUFA to full-term formula is based on their presence in breast milk and randomized controlled studies that suggest improved cognitive function in preterm infants, but results are more variable in full-term infants. Recently, the European Food Safety Authority has proposed, based on a lack of functional evidence, that AA is not required in infant formula for full-term infants during the first year of life but DHA should remain mandatory. The purpose of this review is to review the evidence from epidemiological and intervention studies regarding the essentiality of AA and DHA in the postnatal infant and maternal diet (breast-feeding) for the immune system development early in life. Although studies support the essentiality of DHA for the immune system development, more research is needed to rule out the essentiality of AA. Nevertheless, intervention studies have demonstrated improvement in many markers of immune function in infants fed formula supplemented with AA and DHA compared with unsupplemented formula, which appears to consistently result in beneficial health outcomes including reduction in the risk of developing allergic and atopic disease early in life.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to determine the effect of feeding a maternal diet supplemented with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) during the suckling period on the development of the immune system and oral tolerance (OT) in offspring. Dams were randomized to consume one of two nutritionally adequate diets throughout the suckling period: control (N = 12, 0% DHA) or DHA (N = 8, 0.9% DHA) diet. At 11 days, pups from each dam were randomly assigned to a mucosal OT challenge: the placebo or the ovalbumin (OVA) treatment. At three weeks, plasma immunoglobulins and splenocyte cytokine production ex vivo were measured. OVA-tolerized pups had a lower Th2 (IL-13) response to OVA despite the presence of more activated T cells and memory cells (CD27+, all p < 0.05). Feeding a high DHA diet improved the ability of splenocytes to respond to mitogens toward a skewed Th1 response and led to a higher IL-10 and a lower TGF-β production after stimulation with OVA (all p < 0.05). Untolerized DHA-fed pups had lower plasma concentrations of OVA-specific immunoglobulin E (p for interaction < 0.05). Overall, feeding a high DHA maternal diet improves the tolerance response in untolerized suckled pups in a direction that is thought to be beneficial for the establishment of OT.

Abstract
We have demonstrated previously that n-3 PUFA endogenously produced by fat-1 transgenic mice regulate CD4+ T-cell function by affecting the formation of lipid rafts, liquid-ordered mesodomains in the plasma membrane. In the present study, we tested the effects of dietary sources of n-3 PUFA, i.e. fish oil (FO) or purified DHA, when compared with an n-6 PUFA-enriched maize oil control diet in DO11.10 T-cell receptor transgenic mice. Dietary n-3 PUFA were enriched in CD4+ T-cells, resulting in the increase of the n-3:n-6 ratio. Following antigen-specific CD4+ T-cell activation by B-lymphoma cells pulsed with the ovalbumin 323-339 peptide, the formation of liquid-ordered mesodomains at the immunological synapse relative to the whole CD4+ T-cell, as assessed by Laurdan labelling, was increased (P< 0·05) in the FO-fed group. The FO diet also suppressed (P< 0·05) the co-localisation of PKCθ with ganglioside GM1 (monosialotetrahexosylganglioside), a marker for lipid rafts, which is consistent with previous observations. In contrast, the DHA diet down-regulated (P< 0·05) PKCθ signalling by moderately affecting the membrane liquid order at the immunological synapse, suggesting the potential contribution of the other major n-3 PUFA components of FO, including EPA.

Abstract
Dietary fish oils, rich in (n-3) PUFA, including eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, have been shown to have antiinflammatory properties. Although the antiinflammatory properties of fish oil may be beneficial during a chronic inflammatory illness, the same antiinflammatory properties can suppress the inflammatory responses necessary to combat acute viral infection. Given that (n-3) fatty acid-rich fish oil supplementation is on the rise and with the increasing threat of an influenza pandemic, we tested the effect of fish oil feeding for 2 wk on the immune response to influenza virus infection. Male C57BL/6 mice fed either a menhaden fish oil/corn oil diet (4 g fish oil:1 g corn oil, wt:wt at 5 g/100 g diet) or a control corn oil diet were infected with influenza A/PuertoRico/8/34 and analyzed for lung pathology and immune function. Although fish oil-fed mice had lower lung inflammation compared with controls, fish oil feeding also resulted in a 40% higher mortality rate, a 70% higher lung viral load at d 7 post infection, and a prolonged recovery period following infection. Although splenic natural killer (NK) cell activity was suppressed in fish oil-fed mice, lung NK activity was not affected. Additionally, lungs of infected fish oil-fed mice had significantly fewer CD8+ T cells and decreased mRNA expression of macrophage inflammatory protein-1-alpha, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and interleukin-6. These results suggest that the antiinflammatory properties of fish oil feeding can alter the immune response to influenza infection, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality.

Abstract
The molecular properties of immunosuppressive n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) have not been fully elucidated. Using CD4(+) T cells from wild-type control and fat-1 transgenic mice (enriched in n-3 PUFA), we show that membrane raft accumulation assessed by Laurdan (6-dodecanoyl-2-dimethyl aminonaphthalene) labeling was enhanced in fat-1 cells following immunological synapse (IS) formation by CD3-specific Ab expressing hybridoma cells. However, the localization of protein kinase Ctheta, phospholipase Cgamma-1, and F-actin into the IS was suppressed. In addition, both the phosphorylation status of phospholipase Cgamma-1 at the IS and cell proliferation as assessed by CFSE labeling and [(3)H]thymidine incorporation were suppressed in fat-1 cells. These data imply that lipid rafts may be targets for the development of dietary agents for the treatment of autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Argan oil is receiving increasing attention due to its potential health benefits in the prevention of cardiovascular risk, but no information to date is available about its possible effect on immune cells and functions. METHODS To address this issue male rats were fed one of five diets that contained fish oil, argan oil, olive oil, coconut oil, or sunflower oil for 4 wk. The fatty acid composition of plasma and thymocyte lipids was then analyzed in relation to the mitogen-induced proliferation and phospholipase D (PLD) activity of thymocytes. RESULTS The 18:2omega-6 proportion in thymocyte phospholipids from rats fed argan oil was significantly lower than that observed in phospholipids from rats fed sunflower oil and fish oil but higher than that found in the olive oil and coconut oil groups. Further, a significant positive linear relation was found between thymocyte proliferation and the 18:2omega-6 proportion in thymocyte phospholipids, whatever the diet. The proliferation response of thymocytes to mitogenic activation was also inversely correlated to PLD activity measured in intact thymocytes. Subsequent western blotting experiments indicated that the diet-induced variations in PLD activity mainly reflected variations in the expression of PLD2 protein. CONCLUSIONS On the whole, the present study shows that the effects of argan oil on immune cells are very similar to those of olive oil, and that, as a consequence, argan oil can be used as a balanced dietary supply without marked adverse effects on immune cell function.

Abstract
Dietary n-3 PUFA have been shown to attenuate T-cell-mediated inflammation, in part, by suppressing T-cell activation and proliferation. n-3 PUFA have also been shown to promote apoptosis, another important mechanism for the prevention of chronic inflammation by maintaining T-cell homeostasis through the contraction of populations of activated T cells. Recent studies have specifically examined Fas death receptor-mediated activation-induced cell death (AICD), since it is the form of apoptosis associated with peripheral T-cell deletion involved in immunological tolerance and T-cell homeostasis. Data from our laboratory indicate that n-3 PUFA promote AICD in T helper 1 polarized cells, which are the mediators of chronic inflammation. Since Fas and components of the death-inducing signaling complex are recruited to plasma membrane microdomains (rafts), the effect of dietary n-3 PUFA on raft composition and resident protein localization has been the focus of recent investigations. Indeed, there is now compelling evidence that dietary n-3 PUFA are capable of modifying the composition of T-cell membrane microdomains (rafts). Because the lipids found in membrane microdomains actively participate in signal transduction pathways, these results support the hypothesis that dietary n-3 PUFA influence signaling complexes and modulate T-cell cytokinetics in vivo by altering T-cell raft composition.

Abstract
The correction of a subtle nutritional deficiency that may reduce the risk of a future chronic disease is indeed a challenge. However, some specific examples in the past, such as the addition of folic acid to prevent neural tube defects and calcium and vitamin D to prevent osteoporosis, should provide some encouragement that some conditions can be prevented with the appropriate addition of a deficient compound. One of the most intriguing current and future impacts on public health may come from a higher intake of omega-3 fatty acids, such as alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The omega-3 fatty acids continue to accumulate research that suggests that they may prevent a variety of diverse chronic diseases and potentially some acute clinical scenarios. In the first part of this article, the potential for these compounds to prevent certain cardiovascular conditions are discussed. In the second part, the potential for an impact in arthritis, numerous areas of cancer research, depression, maternal and child health, neurologic diseases, osteoporosis, and other medical disciplines are also briefly covered. The future appears bright for these agents, but specifically which conditions, who qualifies, testing, frequency, adequate sources, future trials, and numerous other questions need to be addressed and answered before the potential impact can catch up to the recent hype.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To clarify whether di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) has immunotoxic effects on both the expression of surface molecules (CD3, CD4, CD8 and CD28) on T cells of the thymus and spleen in male C57BL/6 mice. METHODS Animals were orally administered a 0.1% or 0.2% DEHP-containing diet for 10 or 20 days. Dietary corn oil was used as the vehicle for DEHP in preparing the diet. RESULTS Significant hepatic hypertrophy was clearly observed in the DEHP-exposed groups, while no atrophy was seen in the thymus or spleen in any treatment groups. In the thymus and spleen, no variation in the proportions of both T cells expressing CD3, CD4 and CD8 was shown with cytometry analysis. The surface expression of CD3, CD4, CD8 and CD28 on both T cells was also invariable in all analyzed stages of thymic differentiation and in the spleen. No effect of DEHP on mitogenesis was shown in the splenic T cells with anin vitro [(3)H]-thymidine-incorporation technique. CONCLUSIONS DEHP is probably not an immunosuppressor, particularly for T cells.

Abstract
As previously reported, the association of bone loss with an increase in bone marrow adipose volume may be related to the inhibition of human osteoblastic cell proliferation in the presence of human adipocytes. In the osteoblastic supernatant, fatty acid composition varied after coculture with mature adipocytes, with a marked increase in the proportion of docosahexaenoic acid (22:6 n-3; DHA) (+90 +/- 8%). This suggests that polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) may contribute to the inhibitory effect of adipocytes on osteoblastic cell proliferation. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the effects of two PUFA, DHA and arachidonic acid (20:4 n-6; AA), on the proliferation of primary human osteoblastic (hOB) cells and human osteosarcoma cell line, MG-63. The effects of cholesterol and oleic acid, a monounsaturated FA (18:1 n-9; OA), both being present in adipocyte lipidic vacuoles, were also investigated. At between 10 and 50 micromol/L, DHA and AA induced a significant dose-dependent decrease in hOB cell proliferation (p < 0.0001 and p < 0.006 for DHA and AA, respectively) when compared with control hOB cells exposed to the vehicle (bovine serum albumin). This inhibition reached -50% with 50 micromol/L of DHA or 20 micromol/L of AA. This effect was not related to cell apoptosis, as shown by terminal deoxynucleotidyltransferase-mediated dUTP-fluorescein nick end labeling (TUNEL) and Hoechst dye staining. In contrast, OA and cholesterol had no effect on hOB cell proliferation, even at a high concentration (200 micromol/L). Similar results were observed with regard to MG-63 cell proliferation. In addition, flow cytometric analysis showed that the number of hOB cells in the S phase of the cycle was twofold lower when treated with 50 micromol/L of DHA or AA. In vitro results indicate that mature adipocytes may contribute to age-related bone loss through the release of polyunsaturated fatty acids, which impair osteoblastic proliferation.

Abstract
We determined if long-chain n-3 fatty acids fed as part of a: (1) high polyunsaturated fat diet (currently recommended by several health agencies) or (2) low polyunsaturated fat diet (representative of that consumed by a large segment of the North American population) improved antitumor immune defense and inhibited tumor growth. Rats were fed one of four semi-purified diets (20% w/w fat) for 21 days pre- and 17 days post- R3230AC mammary tumor implantation. The polyunsaturated to saturated fatty acid (P/S) ratio was either 1 (high P/S diet) or 0.35 (low P/S diet). At each P/S ratio, diets provided long-chain n-3 fatty acids at 0 or 5% w/w of total fat. Long-chain n-3 fatty acids fed in a high P/S diet did not affect tumor growth or host immune responses. In contrast, feeding long-chain n-3 fatty acids in a low P/S diet increased natural killer cell cytotoxicity, splenocyte nitric oxide and interleukin-2 production, and the proportion of activated (CD25+) CD8+ and CD28+ cells, but did not significantly inhibit tumor growth. For both P/S diets, tumor cells from rats fed long-chain n-3 fatty acids had a higher n-3 content and n-3/n-6 ratio in phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylethanolamine, and phosphatidylinositol. Furthermore, the magnitude of increase in n-3 fatty acid incorporation into tumor phospholipids was greater when fed in a low P/S diet. We demonstrated that the dietary P/S ratio significantly influences the effect of long-chain n-3 fatty acids on host immune responses and n-3 fatty acid incorporation into tumor cells. These findings warrant further consideration when designing dietary recommendations.

Abstract
In vivo vaccination and challenge studies have demonstrated that CD8(+) lymphocytes are essential for the development of cell-mediated protection against intracellular pathogens and neoplastic cells. Depletion of peripheral blood CD8(+) cells interferes with clearance of viruses and intracellular fungi, induction of delayed type hypersensitivity responses and antitumoral activity. In contrast to humans or mice, porcine peripheral CD8(+) lymphocytes are characterized by a heterogeneous expression pattern (i.e., CD8alphabeta and CD8alphaalpha) that facilitates the study of distinctive traits among minor CD8(+) cell subsets. A factorial (2 x 2) arrangement within a split-plot design, with 16 blocks of two littermate pigs as the experimental units for immunization treatment (i.e., unvaccinated or vaccinated with a proteinase-digested Brachyspira hyodysenteriae bacterin) and pig within block as the experimental unit for dietary treatment (soybean oil or conjugated linoleic acid) were used to investigate the phenotypic and functional regulation of CD8(+) cells by dietary conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). Dietary CLA supplementation induced in vivo expansion of porcine CD8(+) cells involving T-cell receptor (TCR)gammadeltaCD8alphaalpha T lymphocytes, CD3(-)CD16(+)CD8alphaalpha (a porcine natural killer cell subset), TCRalphabetaCD8alphabeta T lymphocytes and enhanced specific CD8(+)-mediated effector functions (e.g., granzyme activity). Expansion of peripheral blood TCRalphabetaCD8alphabeta cells was positively correlated (r = 0.89, P < 0.01) with increased percentages of CD8alphabeta(+) thymocytes. Functionally, CLA enhanced the cytotoxic potential of peripheral blood lymphocytes and proliferation of TCRgammadeltaCD8alphaalpha cells. Collectively, these results indicate that dietary CLA enhances cellular immunity by modulating phenotype and effector functions of CD8(+) cells involved in both adaptive and innate immunity.

Abstract
Infant survival depends on the ability to respond effectively and appropriately to environmental challenges. Infants are born with a degree of immunological immaturity that renders them susceptible to infection and abnormal dietary responses (allergies). T-lymphocyte function is poorly developed at birth. The reduced ability of infants to respond to mitogens may be the result of the low number of CD45RO+ (memory/antigen-primed) T cells in the infant or the limited ability to produce cytokines [particularly interferon-y, interleukin (IL)-4, and IL-10. There have been many important changes in optimizing breast milk substitutes for infants; however, few have been directed at replacing factors in breast milk that convey immune benefits. Recent research has been directed at the neurological, retinal, and membrane benefits of adding 20:4n-6 (arachidonic acid; AA) and 22:6n-3 (docosahexaenoic acid; DHA) to infant formula. In adults and animals, feeding DHA affects T-cell function. However, the effect of these lipids on the development and function of the infant's immune system is not known. We recently reported the effect of adding DHA + AA to a standard infant formula on several functional indices of immune development. Compared with standard formula, feeding a formula containing DHA + AA increased the proportion of antigen mature (CD45RO+) CD4+ cells, improved IL-10 production, and reduced IL-2 production to levels not different from those of human milk-fed infants. This review will briefly describe T-cell development and the potential immune effect of feeding long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids to the neonate.

Abstract
After 10 wk of feeding an experimental diet enriched with (n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), i.e., eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA, 20:5(n-3)] and [DHA, 22:6(n-3)] (EPAX), blood pressure in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR), but not in normotensive Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats was reduced relative to rats fed an unsupplemented control diet. Concanavalin A-stimulated T-cell proliferation was diminished in both strains of rats fed the PUFA/EPAX diet. The experimental diet lowered secretion of interleukin-2 in SHR, but not in WKY rats compared with rats fed the control diet. To determine whether there was a defect in calcium homeostasis in T cells during hypertension, we employed the following agents: caffeine, which recruits calcium from the cytosolic Ca(2+)-induced Ca(2+)-release pool; ionomycin, which at low concentrations opens calcium channels; and thapsigargin (TG), which mobilizes [Ca(2+)]i from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) pool. Caffeine-induced increases in [Ca(2+)]i were not modified by the PUFA/EPAX diet. The ionomycin-induced increases in [Ca(2+)]i in T cells from SHR were greater than in those from WKY rats; consumption of the PUFA/EPAX diet did not modify Ca(2+) influx in cells of either strain. The TG-induced increases in [Ca(2+)]i in T cells from SHR were greater than those in cells from WKY rats. Interestingly, consumption of the experimental diet reduced TG-evoked increases in [Ca(2+)]i in T cells from SHR and increased those in T cells from WKY rats, indicating that the PUFA/EPAX diet could reverse the calcium mobilization from the ER pool in T cells. These results suggest that (n-3) PUFA exert antihypertensive effects and modulate T-cell calcium signaling during hypertension in rats.

Abstract
(n-3) polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) have been widely documented to reduce inflammation in diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis. This study sought to elucidate the mechanism whereby (n-3) PUFA downregulate T-cell proliferation. We hypothesized that membrane incorporation of dietary PUFA would alter membrane structure and consequently membrane receptor function. Female C57BL/6 mice were fed for 14 d one of three diets containing arachidonic acid (AA), fish oil or docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) that varied in lipid composition only. Spleens were harvested and T cells ( approximately 90% purity) were activated with agonists that stimulated proliferation at the receptor level [anti-CD3 (alphaCD3)/anti-CD28 (alphaCD28)], intracellularly [phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA)/ionomycin] or with a combined receptor/intracellular agonist (alphaCD3/PMA). Although there was no significant difference (P > 0.05) in proliferative response across dietary groups within each agonist set, interleukin (IL)-2 secretion was significantly reduced (P = 0.05) in cells from DHA-fed mice stimulated with alphaCD3/alphaCD28. In parallel in vitro experiments, Jurkat T cells were incubated with 50 micromol/L linoleic acid, AA, or DHA. Similar agonists sets were employed, and cells incubated with DHA and AA had a significantly reduced (P < 0.05) IL-2 secretion in three of the agonist sets. However, only when the CD28 receptor was stimulated was there a significant difference (P < 0.05) between DHA and AA. The results of this study suggest the involvement of the CD28 receptor in reducing IL-2 secretion in DHA-fed mice and DHA-incubated Jurkat cells and that purified T cells from DHA-fed mice require accessory cells to modulate proliferative suppression.

Abstract
The role of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in inflammatory lesions of the intestines is the subject of increasing research. This review begins with a background discussion of the source, elongation, and desaturation of PUFAs, as well as the role they have played in the human diet through evolution. The available data and hypotheses as to how manipulation of PUFAs might effect the various components of the immune system are then provided. Possible mechanisms by which PUFAs result in immunomodulation include alterations in eicosanoid synthesis, membrane fluidity, signal transduction, intraluminal bacteria, and gene expression. Attention is then turned to the known effects that these polyunsaturated fatty acids have on the various individual components of the immune system including lymphocytes, neutrophils, and antigen presenting cells, as well as the immunoregulatory process of apoptosis. Finally, laboratory data on the role of PUFAs in necrotizing enterocolitis, and to a greater extent inflammatory bowel disease, first as demonstrated in animal models of the disease, and second in human studies are then summarized.

Abstract
Class I major histocompatibility complex (MHC I) molecules are transmembrane proteins that bind and present peptides to T-cell antigen receptors. The role of membrane lipids in controlling MHC I structure and function is not understood, although membrane lipid composition influences cell surface expression of MHC I. We reconstituted liposomes with purified MHC I (Kb) and probed the effect of lipid composition on MHC I structure (monoclonal anti-MHC I antibody binding). Four phospholipids were compared; each had a phosphocholine head group, stearic acid in the sn-1 position, and either oleic, alpha-linolenic, arachidonic, or docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the sn-2 position. The greatest binding of monoclonal antibody AF6-88.5, which detects a conformationally sensitive epitope in the extracellular region of the MHC I alpha-chain, was achieved with DHA-containing proteoliposomes. Other epitopes (CTKb, 5041.16.1) showed some sensitivity to lipid composition. The addition of beta2-microglobulin, which associates non-covalently with the alpha-chain and prevents alpha-chain aggregation, did not equalize antibody binding to proteoliposomes of different lipid composition, suggesting that free alpha-chain aggregation was not responsible for disparate antibody binding. Thus, DHA-containing membrane lipids may facilitate conformational change in the extracellular domains of the alpha-chain, thereby modulating MHC I function through effects on that protein's structure.
