Optimisation of the storage of natural freshwaters before organotin speciation

Behaviour of butyltin compounds in the sediment pore waters of a contaminated marina (Port Camargue, South of France)

Despite the ban on tributyltin (TBT) in marine paints, harbour sediments are still highly contaminated by this antifouling agent. Concentrations of TBT and its dealkylated products dibutyltin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT) were determined in the pore waters of Port Camargue, a large marina located on the French Mediterranean coast. Pore waters were sampled in the field using peepers deployed in summer 2012 and 2013 and in winter 2012-2013. The winter surveys were characterized by the presence of sulphides in pore waters from a depth of 5 cm, which was not the case in winter. In summer 2013, TBT was shown to be released into pore waters below the sediment-water interface (SWI) at concentrations of up to 70 ngSn L(-1). This release was also observed in sediment anaerobic incubations and was attributed to the mineralization of the sedimentary organic matter, possible stabilization of TBT by complexation with sulphides, and lower debutylation rates in anoxic than in oxic conditions. In summer 2012, a comparatively lower concentration of TBT (around 20 ngSn L(-1) below the SWI) was measured and the presence of methyltin species was detected. We hypothesize that the differences between the two surveys reflect different microbial activity. In winter 2012-2013, marked by Fe-reducing conditions in the sediments, TBT was released into solution at the SWI at concentrations of up to 40 ngSn L(-1). Sediments are thus a continuing source of TBT for the overlying waters despite the ban on its use for boats in France.

Study of the degradation of butyltin compounds in surface water samples under different storage conditions using multiple isotope tracers and GC-MS/MS

The degradation of butyltin compounds in surface water samples under different storage conditions has been studied. A triple spike solution, containing monobutyltin (MBT), dibutyltin (DBT) and tributyltin (TBT) labelled with a different tin isotope, was added to the sample to calculate the extent of the interconversion reactions among butyltin compounds. Real surface water samples (river water) were collected and stored in glass, polypropylene or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) containers. The presence of light, addition of acetic acid, storage temperature (22, 4 or -18 °C), and the influence of a filtration step were evaluated. Moreover, Milli-Q water with and without the addition of a high concentration of humic acids was prepared in parallel and the results compared to those obtained from the real samples. The water samples were analysed by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) in selected reaction monitoring (SRM) mode at two different storage times (2 weeks and 4 months after its preparation) to carry out both a short- and a long-term stability study. The lowest butyltin degradation was obtained when the samples were stored at -18 °C in the dark. Under these conditions, both TBT and DBT showed negligible dealkylation factors after 2 weeks. After 4 months, DBT dealkylation to MBT increased up to 19 % but TBT degradation was not observed.

Occurrence and removal of butyltin compounds in a waste stabilisation pond of a domestic waste water treatment plant of a rural French town

The aim of this study was to investigate the fate and behaviour of butyltin pollutants, including monobutyltin (MBT), dibutylin (DBT), and tributyltin (TBT), in waste stabilisation ponds (WSP). The study was conducted as part of a baseline survey and included five sampling campaigns comprising bottom sludge and the water column from each pond from a typical WSP in France. Butyltins were detected in all raw wastewater and effluents, reflecting their widespread use. Our results revealed high affinity between butyltins and particulate matter and high accumulation of butyltins in the sludge taken from anaerobic ponds. The dissolved butyltins in the influent ranged from 21.5 to 28.1 ng(Sn).L(-1) and in the effluent, from 8.8 to 29.3 ng(Sn).L(-1). The butyltin concentrations in the sludge ranged from 45.1 to 164 and 3.6-8.1 ng(Sn).g(-1) respectively in the first and last ponds. Our results showed an average treatment efficiency of 71% for MBT, 47% for DBT, 55% for TBT. Laboratory sorption experiments enabled the calculation of a distribution coefficient (Kd = 75,000 L.kg-1) between TBT and particulate matter from the WSPs. The Kd explained the accumulation and persistence of the TBT in the sludge after settling of particulate matter. The continuous supply of contaminated raw wastewater and the sorption-desorption processes in the ponds led to incomplete bio- and photolytic degradation and to the persistence of butyltins in dissolved and particulate matrices throughout the survey period. It is thus recommended to use shallow ponds and to pay particular attention when sludge is used for soil amendment.

Study of photocatalytic degradation of tributyltin, dibutylin and monobutyltin in water and marine sediments

This study reports on the first assessment of the treatment of sediments contaminated by organotin compounds using heterogeneous photocatalysis. Photocatalysis of organotins in water was carried out under realistic concentration conditions (μgL(-1)). Degradation compounds were analyzed by GC-ICP-MS; a quasi-complete degradation of tributyltin (TBT) in water (99.8%) was achieved after 30min of photocatalytic treatment. The degradation by photolysis was about (10%) in the same conditions. For the first time decontamination of highly polluted marine sediments (certified reference material and harbor sediments) by photocatalysis proves that the use of UV and the production of hydroxyl radicals are an efficient way to treat organotins adsorbed onto marine sediment despite the complexity of the matrix. In sediment, TBT degradation yield ranged from 32% to 37% after only 2h of irradiation (TiO2-UV) and the by-products: dibutyltin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT) were degraded very rapidly in comparison with TBT. It was shown that during photocatalysis of organotins in sediments, the hydroxyl radical attack and photolysis are the two ways for the degradation of adsorbed TBT.

Impact of rapid urbanisation and industrialisation on river sediment metal contamination

This study aimed at evidencing contaminant inputs from a rapidly growing population and the accompanying anthropogenic activities to river sediments. The Fez metropolitan area and its impacts on the Sebou's sediments (the main Moroccan river) were chosen as a case study. The Fez agglomeration is surrounded by the river Fez, receiving the wastewaters of this developing city and then flowing into the Sebou. The sediment cores from the Fez and Sebou Rivers were extracted and analysed for major elements, butyltins and toxic metals. Normalised enrichment factors and geoaccumulation index were calculated. Toxicity risk was assessed by two sets of sediment quality guideline (SQG) indices. A moderate level of contamination by butyltins was observed, with monobutyltin being the dominant species across all sites and depths. The lowest level of metal pollution was identified in the Sebou's sediments in upstream of Fez city, whilst the Fez' sediments were heavily polluted and exhibited bottom-up accumulation trends, which is a clear signature of recent inputs from the untreated wastewaters of Fez city. Consequently, the sediments of Fez and Sebou at the downstream of the confluence were found to be potentially toxic, according to the SQG levels. This finding is concerned with aquatic organisms, as well as to the riverside population, which is certainly exposed to these pollutants through the daily use of water. This study suggests that although Morocco has adopted environmental regulations aiming at restricting pollutant discharges into the natural ecosystems, such regulations are neither well respected by the main polluters nor efficiently enforced by the authorities.

Temporal and spatial variability of organotins in an intermittent Mediterranean river

Organotin compounds (OTs) are exclusively anthropogenic and have been widely used for their biocidal properties and as stabilizers in various industrial applications. Hence organotins are common pollutants. Their high toxicity has led to their entry on the EU water framework's priority substances' list. However, few studies are available regarding their behaviour in surface waters, in particular, in intermittent Mediterranean rivers. The Vène is an intermittent river located in Languedoc-Roussillon, southern France. It is the main tributary of an important shellfish farming site: the Thau lagoon. The present study aims at establishing the presence of OTs on a 1.5 km long reach of the river into which a waste water treatment plant (WWTP) discharges. The study is carried out during steady-state flow conditions over two consecutive years and investigates potential OTs sources in everyday domestic activities. Routine field monitoring was carried out over a 5 month period during the springs of 2008 and 2009. The results establish the presence of butyltins and octyltins throughout the 1.5 km long reach at concentrations exceeding the maximum allowable concentration levels imposed by the water framework directive. The WWTP is recognized as an important OTs point source; however, using trace and rare earth elements as tracers, an urban stormwater sewage gutter is identified as a secondary source. Its impact on the river's pollutant loads is however variable in time because of flow intermittency. The paper discusses the need for specific monitoring and management schemes for intermittent rivers.

Trace elements in the sediments of a large Mediterranean marina (Port Camargue, France): levels and contamination history

The study of trace elements (Cu, Zn, Pb, As, Hg) and butyltin concentrations in the sediments of Port Camargue enabled assessment of the levels and history of the contamination of the largest European marina linked with the use of antifouling paints. Surface sediments near the boat maintenance area were heavily contaminated with up to 1497 μg g(-1) of Cu, 475 μg g(-1) of Zn, 0.82 μg g(-1) of Hg, 94 μg g(-1) of Pb and over 10,000 ngSn g(-1) of tributyltin (TBT). High concentrations of Hg and TBT indicate ongoing sources of these elements despite the ban on their use as biocides in paints. Sediment cores provided records of contamination since 1969. The peak concentrations of As, Hg, Pb and TBT in the sediment profile reflect their presence on boat hulls when the marina was built at the end of the 1960s. Degradation of TBT in the sediments near the boat maintenance area is slow compared to other less contaminated area of the marina.

Storage stability studies for tributyltin determination in human urine samples using headspace solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography mass spectrometry

A headspace solid-phase micro-extraction (HS-SPME) method was employed in order to study the effect of storage conditions of human urine samples spiked with tributyltin (TBT) using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. To render the analyte more volatile, the derivatization (ethylation) was made in situ by sodium tetraethylborate (NaBEt(4) ), which was added directly to dilute unpreserved urine samples and in buffers of similar acidity. The stability of TBT in human urine matrix was compared with the stability of TBT in buffer solutions of similar pH value. Critical parameters of storage conditions such as temperature and time, which affect the stability of TBT in this kind of matrix, were examined extensively. The tests showed that the stability of TBT remains practically satisfactory for a maximum of 2 days of storage either at +4 or 20°C. Greater variations were observed in the concentration of TBT in human urine samples at +4°C and lower ones at -20°C over a month's storage. The freeze-thaw cycles have negative effect on the stability and should be kept to a minimum. The results from spiked urine samples are also discussed in comparison to those acquired from buffer solutions of equal TBT concentration.

Butyltin occurrence and risk assessment in the sediments of the Iberian Peninsula

The occurrence of butyltin (BT) compounds in more than 50 recent sediment samples of the Iberian Peninsula, collected in the harbours of the western Mediterranean Sea (Spain) and the North Atlantic Ocean (Portugal), including domestic and industrial sewage disposal sites, has been assessed. The highest levels of tributyltin (TBT) (7673 microg kg(-1)dry wt.) were detected in commercial harbours associated with inputs from large vessels. However, relatively high TBT values (about 2150 microg kg(-1)dry wt.) were also detected in fishing and recreational boating areas. Spanish marinas and harbours are more polluted in terms of TBT (5-7673 microg kg(-1)dry wt.) compared to those in Portugal (4-12 microg kg(-1)dry wt.). Generally, the Mediterranean sediments show a BT distribution characterized by the predominance of TBT over the degradation products dibutyl (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT), indicating the presence of recent inputs, in contrast to the Portuguese coastal distribution. Calculation of butyltin degradation indexes (BDI) confirmed a different trend, depending on the area. Furthermore, a comparative study of the occurrence of BT in different sewage sludge disposal sites shows that domestic primary sewage sludge effluents can contribute to coastal BT pollution, but to a lesser extent when compared with harbours. Historical trends (1995-2003) for Barcelona harbour reveal that BT regulations on the use of TBT-based antifouling paints have not been fully effective. Finally, a comparison against the existing sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) indicated that acute toxic effects could only be expected for TBT in some Mediterranean harbours; conversely, in every North Atlantic Ocean station, a lesser environmental threat for the harbour benthic community is expected.

Determination of organotin compounds by headspace solid-phase microextraction–gas chromatography–pulsed flame-photometric detection (HS-SPME–GC–PFPD)

A method based on Headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME, with a 100 mum PDMS-fiber) in combination with gas-chromatography and pulsed flame-photometric detection (GC-PFPD) has been investigated for simultaneous determination of eight organotin compounds. Monobutyltin (MBT), dibutyltin (DBT), tributyltin (TBT), monophenyltin (MPhT), and the semi-volatile diphenyltin (DPhT), triphenyltin (TPhT), monooctyltin (MOcT), and dioctyltin (DOcT) were determined after derivatization with sodium tetraethylborate. The conditions used for the extraction and preconcentration step were optimised by experimental design methodology. Tripropyltin (TPrT) and diheptyltin (DHepT) were used as internal standards for quantification of volatile and semi-volatile organotin compounds, respectively. The analytical precision (RSD) for ten successive injections of a standard mixture containing all the organic tin compounds ranged between 2 and 11%. The limits of detection for all the organotin compounds were sub ng (Sn) L(-1) in water and close to ng (Sn) kg(-1) in sediments. The accuracy of the method was evaluated by analysis of two certified reference material (CRM) sediment samples. The HS-SPME-GC-PFPD was then applied to the analysis of three harbour sediment samples. The results showed that headspace SPME is an attractive tool for analysis of organotin compounds in solid environmental matrices.

Survey of organotin compounds in rivers and coastal environments in Portugal 1999-2000

In the period from April 1999 to May 2000, organotin pollution, namely butyl and phenyltins, was investigated in coastal and continental waters (46 stations), estuarine sediments (15 stations) and mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis) (13 stations) throughout Portugal. Sampling points were chosen in areas of specific industrial, agricultural and harbor activities. Butyltins (BTs) were the only tin species identified of which tributyltin (TBT) was found in the whole area. Concentrations of TBT in river water ranged from 3 to 30 ng L(-1) (as Sn), marine sediment ranged from 4 to 12 microg kg(-1) (as Sn), whereas concentrations in mussel tissue ranged from 2.5 to 490 microg kg(-1) (as Sn). Given that some water samples appeared to be contaminated by higher monobutyltin (MBT) and dibutyltin (DBT) concentrations, the role of biological degradation and direct inputs from agricultural and industrial applications areas are discussed. The study compares depleted butyltin pollution in sediments and mussels of the Portuguese coastline associated with antifouling paints with previously reported levels. Inputs in river waters are more related to (i) PVC leaching and (ii) industrial sources, in some cases discharged by municipal wastewaters.

Organotin survey in the Adour-Garonne basin

Organotin monitoring was performed in waters of 11 rivers of the southwest of France during a 9 months period, between February and October 2001. Surface sediments were studied during the summer. Eighteen sampling points were chosen as representative of specific industrial or agricultural activities. In most samples, organotins were detected and butyltins are the most frequently present, with concentrations ranging over 0.2-30 ng(Sn)/L. Phenyltins were detected especially in spring and at the end of summer, which corresponds to likely diffusion from agricultural sources. Some high butyl- and phenyltin concentrations up to 700 ng(Sn)/L occurred during the spring where pesticides for agricultural activities were largely used. Octyltins were present in water frequently as well, with lower concentrations, probably originating from continuous leaching of plastics. Sediments appeared contaminated by the same species, with higher monobutyltin concentrations of about 30-40 microg(Sn)/kg which shows the importance of biological degradations occurring in surface sediments. This non-pesticidal organotin compounds can also be introduced from leaching of organotin-stabilized PVC by water. Using the different organotin concentrations obtained and other physico-chemical parameters measured, such as temperature or water flow rate, a statistical study was performed by principal component analysis. The results obtained allow the main sources of organotin diffusion to be identified and the hydrological cycle of these compounds better understand.

Specific detection of organotin compounds with a recombinant luminescent bacteria

Organotin compounds are widely used as biocides in marine and terrestrial environments. Several currently used techniques allow either the measurement of the chemicals or their effects on living organisms. Our current research focuses on the development of a complementary method based on a bacterial bioluminescence-based bioassay for the specific detection of organotin compounds. The performance of the bioassay was assessed. The Escherichia coli bacterial strain used in this study is specific for TBT and DBT (with Cl, Br or I as the halogen group) with the central tin atom important for light production. The assay is conducted after overnight culture of the bacterial strain, followed by 60 min of contact time with the organotin compound for significant light production. The detection limits were found to be 0.08 microM for TBT (26 microgl(-1)) and 0.0001 microM for DBT (0.03 microgl(-1)) with a linear range of one logarithm. The repeatability of the bioassay is 8% and the reproducibility for TBT and DBT was approximately 14%. Lyophilization of the strains did not significantly modify the detection limit as well as the range of detection. Applications of the bioassay to environmental samples are discussed.

Validation, using a chemometric approach, of gas chromatography-inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (GC-ICP-AES) for organotin determination

The coupling between gas chromatography (GC) and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) has been optimised using experimental designs. Four factors were considered in order to assist the crucial part of the coupling which is the analytes passing through the transfer line. The methodological approach based on the planning of fractional designs is described and justified according to an optimal experimentation. Then, the GC-ICP-AES-based method has been validated by means of statistical tests performed on calibration curves and evaluation of accuracy, precision and limits of detection (LOD), according to ISO standards and IUPAC recommendations. The absolute LOD are found to be quite similar to those obtained using flame photometer. Relative LOD ranged between 20 and 80 ng (Sn) L(-1) after liquid-liquid extraction of the analytes. When solid phase micro-extraction (SPME) is used, LOD are sub 10 ng (Sn) L(-1). The repeatability is 3-10%, according to the extraction used. Analyses of reference sediment, fresh and waste waters confirm the suitability and capabilities of GC-ICP-AES for organotin determination in the environment. The statistical approach has been demonstrated to be a powerful methodological tool, enhancing the experimental part by providing reliable analytical results.
