Effect of the alkyl chain length on the anaerobic biodegradability and toxicity of quaternary ammonium based surfactants

Global performance and trends of research on emerging contaminants in sewage sludge: A Bibliometric Analysis from 1990 to 2023

The pervasive occurrence of emerging contaminants (ECs) in sewage sludge (SWS) poses significant safety challenges concerning the processing, disposal, and secure application, ultimately jeopardizing both human health and the ecological environment. To comprehensively comprehend the evolutionary trajectories, present state, and research advancements in the field of ECs in SWS, a systematic was conducted, scrutinizing the annual publication quantity, disciplinary distribution, core authors, involved nations/regions, pertinent keywords, and citation status of 2082 research publications related to ECs in SWS from 1990 to 2023. The results indicate a substantial upward trajectory in the research literature pertaining to ECs in SWS. The study of ECs in SWS encompasses 78 disciplines, including Environmental Sciences, Environmental Engineering, and Water Resources. China, Spain, and the USA ranked among the top three countries in terms of both total publications and citation frequency. The majority of publications were published in reputable high-impact journals such as Science of the Total Environment, Chemosphere, and Bioresource Technology. Based on high-frequency keywords, co-occurrence networks of keywords, and keywords burst analysis, it is found that the occurrence and environment behavior of ECs in SWS (ARGs, microplastics, PPCPs, and POPs), the detection and analytical methods, the impact on SWS treatment and disposal processes, and the accumulation and ecological risks in plants and soil during SWS land utilization, are the main research directions and hot topics in this field. In the future, the study of the impact of SWS treatment technologies on ECs removal is expected to receive increased research attention.

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy Analysis of Anaerobic Microbial Metabolic Response to Benzalkonium Chloride Disinfectant

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are disinfection agents used in industrial cleaning processes that are known to interfere with the proper functioning of anaerobic waste digestion directly impacting the quality and quantity of the biogas produced (i.e., CO2 and CH4). While the impact of these contaminants on waste digestors are well known, the impact these compounds have on the metabolic profile of an anaerobic digestor is less understood. This paper describes the use nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy as a non-targeted tool to monitor variations in the metabolic profile of anaerobic bioreactor microcosms simulating the treatment of food production wastewater exposed to benzalkonium chloride (BAC), a key QAC. Using NMR, the variation in the metabolic profile of these wastewater microcosms is compared to variations in the quality and quantity of the biogas produced. A clear development of propionic, isobutyric, isovaleric, and other volatile fatty acids (VFAs) is observed indicating a disruption to the overall ability of the system to convert fatty acids to methane. The ability of NMR to successfully identify the overall metabolic profile, the occurrence of the individual VFAs, and the occurrence of BAC itself in one analysis helps to provide valuable information on the metabolic pathways involved in the disruption of these anaerobic processes.

Alkyltrimethylammonium (ATMA) surfactants as cyanocides - Effects on photosynthesis and growth of cyanobacteria

Cyanobacteria and their toxins present potential hazard to consumers of water from lakes, reservoirs and rivers, thus their removal via water treatment or at the source, is essential. Here, we report that alkyltrimethylammonium (ATMA) surfactants, such as octadecyltrimethylammonium (ODTMA) bromide, act as cyanocides that efficiently inhibit photosynthesis and growth of cyanobacteria. Green algae were found less sensitive than cyanobacteria to ATMA compounds. Fluorescence measurements and microscopic observations demonstrated that cyanobacteria cells (Aphanizomenon or Microcystis) disintegrate and lose their metabolic activity (photosynthesis) upon exposure to ATMA bromides (estimated ED_50(1hr) ranged between 1.5 and 7 μM for ODTMA-Br or hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA) bromide). Other ATMA compounds, such as tetradecyltrimethylammonium (TDTMA) or dodecyltrimethylammonium (DDTMA) bromides had similar inhibitory effect but their toxicity to cyanobacteria (measured as ED_50(1hr) for photosynthetic efficiency) decreased, as the length of the alkyl chain decreased. All ATMA compounds used in this study showed lower toxicity to green algae than to cyanobacteria. A toxicity mechanism for ATMA cations is proposed, based on real time fluorescence signals and on alteration of cell ultra-structure revealed by electron microscopy. The present study sheds light on the toxic effect of ATMA surfactants on cyanobacteria and its potential application for controlling the occurrence of cyanobacterial bloom in lakes, reservoirs or rivers to secure the safety of drinking water and to mitigate and manage bloom events.

Fate and behavior of 14C-labelled ionic compounds in a soil simulation test

The influence of an ionic functional group on the fate and behavior of chemicals in the environment has so far not been systematically investigated. This study, therefore, examines the following three substances with high structural similarity but differing charge: non-charged 4-n-dodecylphenol[phenylring-¹⁴C(U)] (¹⁴C-DP), negatively charged 4-n-dodecylbenzenesulfonicacid[phenylring-¹⁴C(U)] sodium salt (¹⁴C-DS^-) and positively charged 4-n-dodecylbenzyltrimethylammonium chloride[phenylring-¹⁴C(U)] (¹⁴C-DA⁺). They were investigated in a soil simulation study according to the OECD 307 test guideline by measuring the distribution of the applied radioactivity (AR) among volatile, mineralized, extractable and non-extractable residues (NER) in one soil after 0, 1, 7, 14, 49, 84 and 124 days of incubation. Extractable portions of ¹⁴C were examined by means of radio-TLC and -HPLC analyses. Microbial activity of the soil incubated with and without ¹⁴C-DP, ¹⁴C-DS^- and ¹⁴C-DA⁺ was determined measuring the reduction of dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) over time. After 124 days of incubation highest mineralization could be observed for ¹⁴C-DS^- (64.5% AR). Except CO₂, no volatile residues were formed over time. Besides the parent compounds, polar (¹⁴C-DP, ¹⁴C-DS^- and ¹⁴C-DA⁺) and nonpolar (¹⁴C-DA⁺) transformation products were detected. Highest amounts of ¹⁴C were extracted using methanol and were thus potentially bioavailable for soil microorganisms. Microbial activity was markedly higher in soil incubated with ¹⁴C-DP and ¹⁴C-DS^- compared to ¹⁴C-DA⁺ or soil without any treatment. Half-lives (DT_{50 k2}) at 18 °C were as follows: DA⁺ (61.8 days) > DS^- (18.2 days) > DP (10.0 days). In case of the cationic compound and its transformation products we conclude that a higher sorption affinity to soil particles leads to reduced bioavailability for microorganisms and thus reduced mineralization resulting in a higher persistence compared to anionic and non-charged organic compounds in soil. The impact of our findings on the persistence assessment of chemicals when performing OECD guideline tests in soil, water-sediment and surface water is discussed.

Construction, petro-collecting/dispersing capacities, antimicrobial activity, and molecular docking study of new cationic surfactant-sulfonamide conjugates

Surfactants with their diverse activities have been recently involved in controlling the spread of new coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic as they are capable of disrupting the membrane surrounding the virus. Using hybrids approach, we constructed a novel series of cationic surfactant-sulfonamide conjugates (3a-g) through quaternization of the as-prepared sulfonamide derivatives (2a-g) with n-hexadecyl iodide followed by structural characterization by spectroscopy (IR and NMR). Being collective properties required in petroleum-processing environment, the petro-collecting/dispersing capacities on the surface of waters with different degrees of mineralization, and the antimicrobial performance against microbes and sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) that mitigate microbiological corrosion were investigated for the synthesized conjugates. Among these conjugates, 3g (2.5% aq. solution) exhibited the strongest ability to disperse the thin petroleum film on the seawater surface, whereas K_D is 95.33% after 96 h. In diluted form, 3f collected the petroleum layer on distilled water surface (K_max = 32.01) for duration exceeds 4 days. Additionally, almost all compounds revealed high potency and comparable action with standard antimicrobials, especially 3b and 3f, which emphasize their role as potential biocides. Regarding biocidal activity against SRB, 3g causes a significant reduction in the bacterial count from 2.8 × 10⁶ cells/mL to Nil. Moreover, the conducted molecular docking study confirms the strong correlation between RNA polymerase binding with bioactivity against microbes over other studied proteins (threonine synthase and cyclooxygenase-2).

Oil field microorganisms cause highly localized corrosion on chemically inhibited carbon steel

Carbon steel pipelines, a means for crude oil transportation, occasionally experience highly localized perforation caused by microorganisms. While microorganisms grown in laboratory culture tend to corrode steel specimens unevenly, they rarely inflict a corrosion morphology consistent with that of pipelines, where centimetre-sized corrosion features are randomly distributed within vast stretches of otherwise pristine metal surface. In this study, we observed that corrosion inhibitors (CIs), widely used for the control of acid gas (H2 S, CO2 ) corrosion in oil fields, also affect microbial growth and activity. Inhibited carbon steel resisted biofilm formation and underwent negligible corrosion (< 0.002 mm Fe0 year-1 ), despite 15 months of exposure to oil field waters harbouring a diverse microbiome. In contrast, physical scavenging of CI in these waters led to severe and highly localized corrosion (up to 0.93 mm Fe0 year-1 ) underneath biofilms dominated by methanogenic archaea and sulfate-reducing bacteria. A sharp decline in CI concentration, as well as its active components, quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs), correlated with microbial sulfidogenesis. CIs are ubiquitously present in oil field waters and play an underappreciated role in microbial corrosion mitigation. Physical and biological scavenging of CIs may create local differences in steel inhibition effectiveness and thus result in highly localized corrosion.

The Role of Imidazolium-Based Surface-Active Ionic Liquid to Restrain the Excited-State Intramolecular H-Atom Transfer Dynamics of Medicinal Pigment Curcumin: A Theoretical and Experimental Approach

The naturally occurring polyphenolic compound curcumin has shown various medicinal and therapeutic effects. However, there are various challenges associated with curcumin, which limits its biomedical applications, such as its high degradation rate and low aqueous solubility at neutral and alkaline pH. In the present study, efforts have been directed towards trying to resolve such issues by encapsulating curcumin inside the micelles formed by imidazolium-based surface-active ionic liquid (SAIL). The shape and size of the micelles formed by the SAIL have been characterized by using DLS analysis as well as TEM measurements. The photo-physics of curcumin in the presence of ionic liquid (IL) and also with the addition of salt (NaCl) has been explored by using different optical spectroscopic tools. The time-dependent absorption studies have shown that there is relatively higher suppression in the degradation rate of curcumin after encapsulation by the imidazolium-based SAIL in an aqueous medium. The TCSPC studies have revealed that there is deactivation in the nonradiative intramolecular hydrogen transfer process of curcumin in the presence of IL micelles as well as with the addition of salt. Furthermore, the time-dependent fluorescence anisotropy measurement has been carried out to figure out the location of curcumin inside the micellar system. In order to correlate all experimental findings, density functional theory (DFT) and classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations at neutral pH media have been performed. It has been found that the van der Waals force of interactions plays a major role in the stabilization of curcumin in the micelles rather than the coulombic forces. It also has been observed that the van der Waals interactions remain unaffected in the presence of salt. However, as revealed by the MD simulation results, the micelles are found to be more compact in size after the addition of salt. The RMSD results show that the micelles formed by the SAIL achieve greater stability after a particular time constraint. Our results have divulged that the SAIL could act as a promising drug delivery system.

Increased Use of Quaternary Ammonium Compounds during the SARS-CoV-2 Pandemic and Beyond: Consideration of Environmental Implications

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are active ingredients in over 200 disinfectants currently recommended by the U.S. EPA for use to inactivate the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) virus. The amounts of these compounds used in household, workplace, and industry settings has very likely increased, and usage will continue to be elevated given the scope of the pandemic. QACs have been previously detected in wastewater, surface waters, and sediments, and effects on antibiotic resistance have been explored. Thus, it is important to assess potential environmental and engineering impacts of elevated QAC usage, which may include disruption of wastewater treatment unit operations, proliferation of antibiotic resistance, formation of nitrosamine disinfection byproducts, and impacts on biota in surface waters. The threat caused by COVID-19 is clear, and a reasonable response is elevated use of QACs to mitigate spread of infection. Exploration of potential effects, environmental fate, and technologies to minimize environmental releases of QACs, however, is warranted.

Photochemical fate of quaternary ammonium compounds in river water

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are not completely removed during wastewater treatment and are frequently detected in surface waters and sediments. The photochemical transformation of QACs has not been thoroughly investigated as a potential degradation pathway affecting their fate in the environment. Kinetic studies of common QACs with and without aromatic groups under simulated and natural sunlight conditions were performed with model sensitizers and dissolved organic matter to estimate photochemical half-lives in the aquatic environment. All QACs investigated react with hydroxyl radicals at diffusion-controlled rates (∼2.9 × 109 to 1.2 × 1010 M-1 s-1). Benzethonium reacted via direct photolysis (ΦBZT,outdoor = 1.7 × 10-2 (mol Ei-1)). Benzethonium also reacted with the triplet excited state model sensitizer 2-acetylnaphthalene, but evidence suggests this reaction pathway is unimportant in natural waters due to faster quenching of the triplet 2-acetylnapthalene by oxygen. Reactivity with singlet oxygen for the QACs was minimal. Overall, reactions with hydroxyl radicals will dominate over direct photolysis due to limited spectral overlap of sunlight emission and QAC absorbance. Photolysis half-lives are predicted to be 12 to 94 days, indicating slow abiotic degradation in surface water.

Benzalkonium ion sorption to peat and clays: Relative contributions of ion exchange and van der Waals interactions

Due to their use in various domestic and industrial formulations, benzalkonium compounds have been isolated in many environmental matrices. Sorption to soil components has been shown to play a key role in their environmental fate. Whereas sorption of benzalkonium compounds to soils is attributed to cation exchange and van der Waals forces, the relative contributions of these two mechanisms at environmental levels have not been clearly defined. In this study a previously reported algal toxicity assay-based method was employed to determine the distribution coefficients (K_d) of benzalkonium compounds between water and soil components, at environmental concentrations. Cation exchange capacity corrected K_d values for organic matter and clays were all within one order of magnitude. This implies that ion exchange is the dominant mechanism of sorption for benzalkonium compounds. When the sorption data were used to compute sorption energies for four homologues of benzalkonium ions, the magnitude of the free energy change of sorption increased with size of the molecule. The increase in sorption energy could be partly explained by increased energy of hydration with addition of methylene groups to the alkyl chain. A model that predicts sorption coefficients of benzalkonium compounds to soils using organic carbon content and cation exchange capacity was also defined. When tested using an artificial soil, the model estimates were all within one order of magnitude of the experimental values.

Application of seven different clay types in sorbent-modified biodegradability studies with cationic biocides

The cationic surfactants cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) can exert inhibitory effects on micro-organisms responsible for their biodegradation. However, under environmentally relevant exposure scenarios the presence of and sorption to organic and inorganic matter can lead to significant reduction of inhibitory effects. In our studies we investigated silica gel and seven clays as inert sorbents to mitigate these inhibitory effects in a 28 day manometric respirometry biodegradation test. CTAB was not inhibitory to the used inoculum, but we did observe that seven out of eight sorbents increased maximum attainable biodegradation, and four out of eight decreased the lag phase. The strongly inhibitory effect of CPC was successfully mitigated by most sorbents, with five out of eight allowing >50% biodegradation within 28 days. Results further indicate that bioaccessibility of the sorbed fractions in the stirred manometric test systems was higher than in calmly shaken headspace test systems. Bioaccessibility might also be limited depending on characteristics of test chemical and sorbent type, with montmorillonite and bentonite apparently providing the lowest level of bioaccessibility with CPC. Clay sorbents can thus be used as environmentally relevant sorbents to mitigate potential inhibitory effects of test chemicals, but factors that impede bioaccessibility should be considered. In addition to apparently increased bioaccessibility due to stirring, the automated manometric respirometry test systems give valuable and highly cost-effective insights into lag phase and biodegradation kinetics; information that is especially relevant for test chemicals of gradual biodegradability.

Sorbent-modified biodegradation studies of the biocidal cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride

Biodegradability studies for the cationic surfactant cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) are hampered by inhibitory effects on inoculum at prescribed test concentrations (10-20 mg organic carbon/L). In this study, we used ¹⁴C labeled CPC in the 28 d Headspace Test (OECD 310) and demonstrated that CPC was readily biodegradable (10->60% mineralization within a 10 day window) at test concentrations 0.006-0.3 mg/L with CPC as single substrate. Biodegradation efficiency was comparable over this concentration range. CPC inhibited degradation at 1 mg/L and completely suppressed inoculum activity at 3 mg/L. In an extensive sorbent modified biodegradation study we evaluated the balance between CPC bioaccessibility and toxicity. A non-inhibitory concentration of 0.1 mg/L CPC was readily biodegradable with 83% sorbed to SiO₂, while biodegradation was slower when 96% was sorbed. SiO₂ mitigated inhibitory effects of 1 mg/L CPC, reaching >60% biodegradation within 28 d; inhibitory effects were also mitigated by addition of commercial clay powder (illite) but this was primarily reflected by a reduced lag phase. At 10 mg/L CPC SiO₂ was still able to mitigate inhibitory effects, but bioaccessibility seemed limited as only 20% biodegradation was reached. Illite limited bioaccessibility more strongly and was not able to sustain biodegradation at 10 mg/L CPC.

Nontarget profiling of organic compounds in a temporal series of hydraulic fracturing flowback and produced waters

Hydraulic fracturing (HF) flowback and produced water (FPW) can be toxic to aquatic life but its chemical content is largely unknown, variable and complex. Seven FPW samples were collected from a HF operation in the Duvernay Formation (Alberta, Canada) over 30 days of flowback and characterized by a nontarget workflow based on high performance liquid chromatography - high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). A modified Kendrick mass defect plot and MS/MS spectral interpretation revealed seven series of homologues composed of ethylene oxide (i.e. -CH₂CH₂O-), among which a series of aldehydes was proposed as degradation products of polyethylene glycols, and two series of alkyl ethoxylate carboxylates could be proprietary HF additives. Many other ions were confidently assigned a formula by accurate mass measurement and were subsequently prioritized for identification by matching to records in ChemSpider and the US EPA's CompTox Chemistry Dashboard. Quaternary ammonium compounds, amine oxides, organophosphorous compounds, phthalate diesters and hydroxyquinoline were identified with high confidence by MS/MS spectra (Level 3), matching to reference spectra in MassBank (Level 2) or to authentic standards (Level 1). Temporal trends showed that most of the compounds declined in abundance over the first nine days of flowback, except for phthalate diesters and hydroxyquinoline that were still observed on Day 30 and had disappearance half-lives of 61 and 91 days, respectively. All the compounds followed first-order disappearance kinetics in flowback, except for polyoxygenated acids which followed second-order kinetics. This analysis and the workflow, based largely on public on-line databases, enabled profiling of complex organic compounds in HF-FPW, and will likely be useful for further understanding the toxicity and chemical fate of HF-FPW.

The impact and mechanism of quaternary ammonium compounds on the transmission of antibiotic resistance genes

The emergence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in microbes can be largely attributed to the abuse and misuse of antibiotics and biocides. Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) have been used worldwide as common disinfectants and detergents; however, their potential impact on the spread and diffusion of ARGs is still unknown. In this study, we detected the QAC resistance gene (qacEΔ1), the 1 integron gene (intI1), and 12 ARGs (sul1, sul2, cfr, cml, fexA, tetA, tetG, tetQ, tetX, ermB, bla_TEM, and dfrA1) in 48 water samples from three watersheds by quantitative PCR (qPCR). We investigated the evolution of bacterial antibiotic resistance under QAC and antibiotic environmental pressures by long-term continuous culture. In addition, five QACs were selected to investigate the effect of QAC on the efficiency of conjugation transfer. The changes in bacterial cell membrane and production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were detected by flow cytometry, revealing the mechanism by which QAC affects the spread of antibiotic resistance. Our results showed that the QAC resistance gene was ubiquitous in watersheds and it had significant correlation with intI1 and seven ARGs (r = 0.999, p < 0.01). QACs could increase the resistance of bacteria to multiple antibiotics. Furthermore, all five QACs promoted the conjugation transfer of the RP4 plasmid; the optimal concentration of QACs was about 10^-1-10^-2 mg/L and their transfer efficiencies were between 1.33 × 10^-6 and 8.87 × 10^-5. QACs enhanced membrane permeability of bacterial cells and stimulated bacteria to produce ROS, which potentially promoted the transfer of plasmids between bacteria. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that QACs may facilitate the evolution and gene transfer of antibiotic resistance gene among microbiome.

Synthesis of Surfactants Derived from 2-Mercaptobenzimidazole and Study of Their Acute Toxicity and Analgesic and Psychotropic Activities

The aim of the present study is to synthesize cationic salts from a relatively toxic compound named 2-mercaptobenzimidazole and to evaluate some of their pharmacological properties. The acute toxicity of these salts is evaluated according to OECD 423 Guidelines at the doses of 300 and 2000 mg/kg; their peripheral analgesic effect is studied using the Koster test at the therapeutic dose of 200 mg/kg and their sedative action is evaluated using Traction, Chimney, Hole-board, and Rotarod tests at the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg. All synthesized molecules show no acute toxicity according to OECD Code 423 guidelines at doses ranging from 300 to 2000 mg/kg and do not cause any obesity or anorexia. Also, the results of the Koster test show that the studied compounds have an average analgesic effect at the dose of 200 mg/kg compared to acetylsalicylic acid. In addition, the elaborated compounds have shown a moderate sedative effect at the dose of 400 mg/kg, in comparison to 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (400 mg/kg) and Bromazepam (20 mg/kg). These compounds have no cataleptic and hypnotic effects on the central nervous system at the doses of 200 and 400 mg/kg. These results argue in favor of a possible integration of the most active salts tested in the pharmaceutical industry owing to their analgesic and sedative effects.

Biocompatible functionalisation of nanoclays for improved environmental remediation

Among the wide range of materials used for remediating environmental contaminants, modified and functionalised nanoclays show particular promise as advanced sorbents, improved dispersants, or biodegradation enhancers. However, many chemically modified nanoclay materials are incompatible with living organisms when they are used in natural systems with detrimental implications for ecosystem recovery. Here we critically review the pros and cons of functionalised nanoclays and provide new perspectives on the synthesis of environmentally friendly varieties. Particular focus is given to finding alternatives to conventional surfactants used in modified nanoclay products, and to exploring strategies in synthesising nanoclay-supported metal and metal oxide nanoparticles. A large number of promising nanoclay-based sorbents are yet to satisfy environmental biocompatibility in situ but opportunities are there to tailor them to produce "biocompatible" or regenerative/reusable materials.

Application of an algal growth inhibition assay to determine distribution coefficients of benzalkonium ions between kaolinite and water

Benzalkonium compounds are widely used and found in environmental samples. Due to their amphiphilic nature, it is important to know sorption coefficients to account their bioavailability. However, currently available models describing their partitioning were developed using low molecular weight homologues and it cannot be ascertained whether they are applicable to their higher molecular weight homologues. Reasons for the scarcity of data on highly sorptive compounds include the lack of reliable quantification techniques for analyzing these chemicals at environmentally relevant levels. This study, therefore, reports on an algal growth inhibition assay-based method for the determination of kaolinite/water distribution coefficients for benzalkonium compounds at their environmentally relevant concentration range. Sorption to clay was computed using the difference between median effective concentration determined in a culture with kaolinite and that derived from a culture grown in standard medium. A kinetic model was used to account for uptake into algal cells and to calculate free concentrations. Due to the sensitivity of the algal species, Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata, it was possible to determine distribution coefficients below micromole per liter concentrations. The computed distribution coefficients showed a linear increase with number of carbon atoms in the alkyl chain up to 14. The proposed bioassay-based method should be applicable to determine distribution coefficients for highly hydrophobic chemicals and ionic liquids at a concentration range lower than typical analytical limits.

Biodegradability and aquatic toxicity of new cleavable betainate cationic oligomeric surfactants

New cleavable oligomeric cationic surfactants containing ester groups susceptible to hydrolysis between the hydrocarbon tails and the hydrophilic moiety have been synthesized and their biodegradability and aquatic toxicity examined. Aerobic biodegradability was evaluated by applying a standard method for ready biodegradability, the CO₂ Headspace test. Aquatic toxicity was assessed by means of the acute toxicity test with Daphnia. Cleavable oligomeric cationic surfactants undergo a significant biodegradation extent (31-52%) as compared to dimeric surfactants without ester groups that showed null degradation in previous works. However, they do not attain the threshold of ultimate degradation required (60%) to be classed as easily biodegradable chemicals. On the other hand, the introduction of cleavable groups in the surfactant hydrophobic chains reduces the toxic effects on the microorganisms responsible for degradation observed for conventional alkyl ammonium dimeric surfactants. Acute toxicity values of betainate cationic oligomeric surfactants to Daphnia magna, IC₅₀-48 h, varies from 1.5 to 50 mg/L. Aquatic toxicity of oligomeric cationic surfactants depends on their hydrophobicity and increases regularly with the alkyl chain length. However, whether the surfactant is a dimeric or a trimeric betaine ester does not affect their acute toxicity to crustacean.

Toxicities of Four Parabens and Their Mixtures to Daphnia magna and Aliivibrio fischeri

The objective of this study was to determine toxicities of four parabens (methyl paraben, MP; ethyl paraben, EP; n-propyl paraben, PP; and n-butyl paraben; BP) and their mixtures to two aquatic microorganisms, Daphnia magna and Aliivibrio fischeri. Parabens are one of the widely used preservatives for personal care products, such as cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and food also. First, each paraben was treated to D. magna to measure the toxicity levels as LC20 and LC50. The results showed their value of MP (25.2 mg/L, 73.4 mg/L), EP (18.4 mg/L, 43.7 mg/L), PP (10.4 mg/L, 21.1 mg/L) and BP (3.3 mg/L, 11.2 mg/L). Then, each of the parabens was treated to A. fischeri and calculated their EC20 and EC50 by bioluminescence inhibition test. The results showed the values of MP (2.93 mg/L, 16.8 mg/L), EP (1.18 mg/L, 6.74 mg/L), PP (0.51 mg/L, 5.85 mg/L) and BP (0.21 mg/L, 2.34 mg/L). These four parabens belong to the group classified as being 'harmful to aquatic organisms' (above 10 mg/L, below 100 mg/L). After measuring the toxicity, EC20 values of two or more parabens were tested in order to investigate their toxicity. A total of ten combinations of four parabens were tested. As a result, the bioluminescence inhibition test of A. fischeri showed that the toxicity of mixture parabens was stronger than that of a single compound and combinations of three parabens showed the highest bioluminescence inhibition. These results showed that independent toxicity of paraben was maintained. Therefore, it can be predictable that the toxicity of paraben is getting stronger by the addition of other parabens.

Detailed mass flows and removal efficiencies for biocides and antibiotics in Swedish sewage treatment plants

Antimicrobial compounds, such as biocides and antibiotics, are widely used in society with significant quantities of these chemicals ending up in sewage treatment plants (STPs). In this study, mass flows and removal efficiency in different treatment steps at three Swedish STPs were evaluated for eleven different biocides and antibiotics. Mass flows were calculated at eight different locations (incoming wastewater, water after the first sedimentation step, treated effluent, primary sludge, surplus sludge, digested sludge, dewatered digested sludge and reject water). Samples were collected for a total of nine days over three weeks. The STPs were able to remove 53->99% of the antimicrobial compounds and 0-64% were biodegraded on average in the three STPs. Quaternary ammonium compounds were removed from the wastewater >99%, partly through biodegradation, but 38-96% remained in the digested sludge. Chlorhexidine was not biodegraded but was efficiently removed from the wastewater to the sludge. The biological treatment step was the most important step for the degradation of the studied compounds, but also removed several compounds through the surplus sludge. Compounds that were inefficiently removed included benzotriazoles, trimethoprim and fluconazole. The study provides mass flows and removal efficiencies for several compounds that have been seldom studied.

Distribution and diagenetic fate of synthetic surfactants and their metabolites in sewage-impacted estuarine sediments

Surfactants are high production volume chemicals used in numerous domestic and industrial applications and, after use, the most abundant organic contaminants in wastewater. Their discharge might jeopardize the receiving aquatic ecosystems, including sediments, where they tend to accumulate. This is the first comprehensive study on their distribution and fate in this environmental compartment as we performed simultaneous analysis of the three main classes of surfactants (anionic: LAS; nonionic: NPEO and AEO; cationic: DTDMAC, DADMAC, BAC, and ATMAC) and some of their transformation products (SPC, NP, NPEC, and PEG). To account for spatial and time trends, surface sediments and dated cores were collected from Jamaica Bay, a heavily sewage-impacted estuary in New York City. The concentrations of surfactants in surface sediments were between 18 and > 200 μg g^-1 and showed slight variation (<10%) over different sampling years (1998, 2003 and 2008). Cationic surfactants were found at the highest concentrations, with DTDMAC accounting for between 52 and 90% of the total sum of target compounds. Vertical concentration profiles in dated cores from the most contaminated station, in the vicinity of the biggest local sewage treatment plant (STP), indicated two sub-surface surfactant peaks in the mid-1960s (469 μg g^-1) and late 1980s (572 μg g^-1) coinciding with known STP upgrades. This trend was observed for most target compounds, except for DADMAC, C22ATMAC, and PEG, which showed a continuous increase towards the top of the cores. In-situ degradation was studied by comparing sediment core samples taken 12 years apart (1996 and 2008) and revealed a net decrease in PEG and specific surfactants (BAC, ATMAC, NPEO, and AEO) accompanied by growing concentrations of metabolites (SPC, NP, and NPEC). DTDMAC, DADMAC, and LAS, however, remained stable over this period, suggesting recalcitrant behavior under the anaerobic conditions in Jamaica Bay sediments.

Comprehensive characterization of toxicity of fermentative metabolites on microbial growth

BACKGROUND

Volatile carboxylic acids, alcohols, and esters are natural fermentative products, typically derived from anaerobic digestion. These metabolites have important functional roles to regulate cellular metabolisms and broad use as food supplements, flavors and fragrances, solvents, and fuels. Comprehensive characterization of toxic effects of these metabolites on microbial growth under similar conditions is very limited.

RESULTS

We characterized a comprehensive list of thirty-two short-chain carboxylic acids, alcohols, and esters on microbial growth of Escherichia coli MG1655 under anaerobic conditions. We analyzed toxic effects of these metabolites on E. coli health, quantified by growth rate and cell mass, as a function of metabolite types, concentrations, and physiochemical properties including carbon number, chemical functional group, chain branching feature, energy density, total surface area, and hydrophobicity. Strain characterization revealed that these metabolites exert distinct toxic effects on E. coli health. We found that higher concentrations and/or carbon numbers of metabolites cause more severe growth inhibition. For the same carbon numbers and metabolite concentrations, we discovered that branched chain metabolites are less toxic than the linear chain ones. Remarkably, shorter alkyl esters (e.g., ethyl butyrate) appear less toxic than longer alkyl esters (e.g., butyl acetate). Regardless of metabolites, hydrophobicity of a metabolite, governed by its physiochemical properties, strongly correlates with the metabolite's toxic effect on E. coli health.

CONCLUSIONS

Short-chain alcohols, acids, and esters exhibit distinctive toxic effects on E. coli health. Hydrophobicity is a quantitative predictor to evaluate the toxic effect of a metabolite. This study sheds light on degrees of toxicity of fermentative metabolites on microbial health and further helps in the selection of desirable metabolites and hosts for industrial fermentation to overproduce them.

Correlation among chemical structure, surface properties and cytotoxicity of N-acyl alanine and serine surfactants

Toxicity is one of the main concerns limiting the use of surfactants. Many efforts have been devoted to the development of new amphiphilic molecules characterized by a lower toxicological profile and environmental impact. N-acyl amino acids are a class of anionic surfactants that can find applications in different technological fields as an alternative to sulphate-based surfactants (e.g., sodium dodecyl sulphate). The understanding of the relationship between chemical structure and toxicological profile is fundamental for the disclosure of the full potential of these amphiphiles. With this aim, two series of N-acyl surfactants, with different length of the hydrophobic tails and serine or alanine as polar head, were synthesized and fully characterized. The correlation between the surface and toxicological parameters allowed highlighting the role exerted by the length of the hydrocarbon chain and the polar head on cytotoxicity. The length of the hydrocarbon chain mainly influences surface properties and toxicological parameters, while the amino acid polar head may play a key role only on cellular toxicity. Overall, our data suggest that minor differences in the polar head, not significantly affecting CMC values, may have an impact on cytotoxicity.

Biodegradability and aquatic toxicity of quaternary ammonium-based gemini surfactants: Effect of the spacer on their ecological properties

Aerobic biodegradability and aquatic toxicity of five types of quaternary ammonium-based gemini surfactants have been examined. The effect of the spacer structure and the head group polarity on the ecological properties of a series of dimeric dodecyl ammonium surfactants has been investigated. Standard tests for ready biodegradability assessment (OECD 310) were conducted for C12 alkyl chain gemini surfactants containing oxygen, nitrogen or a benzene ring in the spacer linkage and/or a hydroxyethyl group attached to the nitrogen atom of the head groups. According to the results obtained, the gemini surfactants examined cannot be considered as readily biodegradable compounds. The negligible biotransformation of the gemini surfactants under the standard biodegradation test conditions was found to be due to their toxic effects on the microbial population responsible for aerobic biodegradation. Aquatic toxicity of gemini surfactants was evaluated against Daphnia magna. The acute toxicity values to Daphnia magna, IC50 at 48 h exposure, ranged from 0.6 to 1 mg/L. On the basis of these values, the gemini surfactants tested should be classified as toxic or very toxic to the aquatic environment. However, the dimeric quaternary ammonium-based surfactants examined result to be less toxic than their corresponding monomeric analogs. Nevertheless the aquatic toxicity of these gemini surfactants can be reduced by increasing the molecule hydrophilicity by adding a heteroatom to the spacer or a hydroxyethyl group to the polar head groups.

Biodegradation of benzalkonium chlorides singly and in mixtures by a Pseudomonas sp. isolated from returned activated sludge

Bactericidal cationic surfactants such as quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are widely detected in the environment, and found at mg kg(-1) concentrations in biosolids. Although individual QACs are amenable to biodegradation, it is possible that persistence is increased for mixtures of QACs with varying structure. The present study evaluated the biodegradation of benzyl dimethyl dodecyl ammonium chloride (BDDA) singly and in the presence of benzyl dimethyl tetradecyl ammonium chloride (BDTA) using Pseudomonas sp., isolated from returned activated sludge. Growth was evaluated, as was biodegradation using (14)C and HPLC-MS methods. BDTA was more toxic to growth of Pseudomonas sp. compared to BDDA, and BDTA inhibited BDDA biodegradation. The benzyl ring of [U-(14)C-benzyl] BDDA was readily and completely mineralized. The detection of the transformation products benzyl methyl amine and dodecyl dimethyl amine in spent culture liquid was consistent with literature. Overall, this study demonstrates the antagonistic effect of interactions on biodegradation of two widely used QACs suggesting further investigation on the degradation of mixture of QACs in wastewater effluents and biosolids.

Effects of Benzalkonium Chloride, Proxel LV, P3 Hypochloran, Triton X-100 and DOWFAX 63N10 on anaerobic digestion processes

In this study, the individual and synergistic toxicity of the following xenobiotics: Benzalkonium Chloride (BKC), Proxel LV (PRX), P3 Hypochloran (HPC), Triton X-100 (TRX), and DOWFAX 63N10 (DWF), on anaerobic digestion (AD) process, was assessed. The experiments were performed in batch and continuous (up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket, UASB) reactors with biochemical-industrial wastewater, as substrate. In batch experiments, half-maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC50) for the tested xenobiotics were found to be 13.1, 1003, 311.5 and 24.3 mg L(-1) for BKC, PRX, DWF and TRX, respectively while HPC did not affect the AD process. Furthermore, the xenobiotics mixture tested did not present any synergistic inhibitory effect on the AD process. In continuous experiments, BKC and xenobiotics' mixture induced even stronger (more than 85%) of inhibition, expressed as IC50, compared to the levels observed from the batch reactors. Oppositely, TRX showed no inhibition in continuous mode, while inhibition was detected at batch mode.

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs): a review on occurrence, fate and toxicity in the environment

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are widely applied in household and industrial products. Most uses of QACs can be expected to lead to their release to wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and then dispersed into various environmental compartments through sewage effluent and sludge land application. Although QACs are considered to be aerobically biodegradable, the degradation is affected by its chemical structures, dissolved oxygen concentration, complexing with anionic surfactants, etc. High abundance of QACs has been detected in sediment and sludge samples due to its strong sorption and resistance to biodegradation under anoxic/anaerobic conditions. QACs are toxic to a lot of aquatic organisms including fish, daphnids, algae, rotifer and microorganisms employed in wastewater treatment systems. And antibiotic resistance has emerged in microorganisms due to excessive use of QACs in household and industrial applications. The occurrence of QACs in the environment is correlated with anthropogenic activities, such as wastewater discharge from WWTPs or single source polluters, and sludge land application. This article also reviews the analytical methods for determination of QACs in environmental compartments including surface water, wastewater, sewage sludge and sediments.

Biocides in hydraulic fracturing fluids: a critical review of their usage, mobility, degradation, and toxicity

Biocides are critical components of hydraulic fracturing ("fracking") fluids used for unconventional shale gas development. Bacteria may cause bioclogging and inhibit gas extraction, produce toxic hydrogen sulfide, and induce corrosion leading to downhole equipment failure. The use of biocides such as glutaraldehyde and quaternary ammonium compounds has spurred a public concern and debate among regulators regarding the impact of inadvertent releases into the environment on ecosystem and human health. This work provides a critical review of the potential fate and toxicity of biocides used in hydraulic fracturing operations. We identified the following physicochemical and toxicological aspects as well as knowledge gaps that should be considered when selecting biocides: (1) uncharged species will dominate in the aqueous phase and be subject to degradation and transport whereas charged species will sorb to soils and be less bioavailable; (2) many biocides are short-lived or degradable through abiotic and biotic processes, but some may transform into more toxic or persistent compounds; (3) understanding of biocides' fate under downhole conditions (high pressure, temperature, and salt and organic matter concentrations) is limited; (4) several biocidal alternatives exist, but high cost, high energy demands, and/or formation of disinfection byproducts limits their use. This review may serve as a guide for environmental risk assessment and identification of microbial control strategies to help develop a sustainable path for managing hydraulic fracturing fluids.

The biodegradation of monomeric and dimeric alkylammonium surfactants

Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are salts known for having antiseptic and disinfectant properties. These compounds are toxic to aquatic organisms and should thus be removed from wastewater before its discharge into surface waters. The biodegradation of QACs takes place in the presence of microorganisms under aerobic conditions. The susceptibility of these compounds to degradation depends on numerous parameters. A number of them, such as the structure-adsorption on solids, and concentration of the QACs, as well as the presence of additional substances, have been reviewed in this article. Moreover, the biodegradability of new dimeric alkylammonium salts, i.e., cationic gemini surfactants, has been discussed and compared with that of anionic and nonionic geminis. The biodegradation study of monomeric and dimeric alkylammonium surfactants show that they are not easily degraded. The degradation process is very complex and strongly depends on the structure of the compound, adsorption-desorption processes on sludge, type of microorganism consortia and the presence of anions. Alkylammonium surfactants with biological motifs, like amide, peptides or carbohydrates, are much better degraded.

Occurrence of surface active agents in the environment

Due to the specific structure of surfactants molecules they are applied in different areas of human activity (industry, household). After using and discharging from wastewater treatment plants as effluent stream, surface active agents (SAAs) are emitted to various elements of the environment (atmosphere, waters, and solid phases), where they can undergo numerous physic-chemical processes (e.g., sorption, degradation) and freely migrate. Additionally, SAAs present in the environment can be accumulated in living organisms (bioaccumulation), what can have a negative effect on biotic elements of ecosystems (e.g., toxicity, disturbance of endocrine equilibrium). They also cause increaseing solubility of organic pollutants in aqueous phase, their migration, and accumulation in different environmental compartments. Moreover, surfactants found in aerosols can affect formation and development of clouds, which is associated with cooling effect in the atmosphere and climate changes. The environmental fate of SAAs is still unknown and recognition of this problem will contribute to protection of living organisms as well as preservation of quality and balance of various ecosystems. This work contains basic information about surfactants and overview of pollution of different ecosystems caused by them (their classification and properties, areas of use, their presence, and behavior in the environment).

Influence of quaternary ammonium compounds on the microbial reductive dechlorination of pentachloroaniline

The inhibitory effect of two widely used quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs)--alkyl benzyl dimethyl (AB) and hexadecyl trimethyl (HD) ammonium chloride--on fermentation, methanogenesis and pentachloroaniline (PCA) dechlorination was assessed using a mixed, methanogenic, PCA-dechlorinating culture amended with AB or HD at a concentration range from 5 to 70 μM. PCA dechlorination was inhibited at 5 μM AB and was completely inhibited at 25 or 5 μM by AB or HD, respectively. However, the PCA dechlorination pathway was the same in both the QACs-free and QACs-amended culture series. Fermentation (acidogenesis) and methanogenesis were inhibited by both AB and HD at and above 25 μM but to a lesser degree than PCA dechlorination. Overall, HD resulted in a more severe inhibition of the mixed culture than AB. Adsorption of both QACs to the mixed culture biomass followed the Freundlich isotherm model. The adsorption affinity of HD for the mixed culture biomass was significantly higher than that of AB, which may be related to the observed higher inhibitory effects of HD compared to AB. Both AB and HD were not degraded in the mixed, dechlorinating culture used in this study.

Toxicity of organoclays to microbial processes and earthworm survival in soils

Organoclays have wide spread application in environmental remediation and nanocomposites synthesis. Some of the quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) commonly used to prepare organoclays are toxic to biota. However, information on the toxicity of organoclays is rarely available in the literature. This study assessed the toxicity of three laboratory prepared bentonite organoclays on the soil microbially mediated processes (such as dehydrogenase activity and potential nitrification) and soil inhabiting animals, such as earthworms. Toxicity to both microbial processes and earthworm followed the order: hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium modified bentonite>octadecyltrimethyl ammonium modified bentonite>arquad modified bentonite>unmodified bentonite. The organoclays were able to cause slight improvement (up to 25%) in the potential nitrification in some soils when they were added at low application rates up to 5%, but caused reduction (3-86%) in the dehydrogenase activity in all the soils irrespective of loading rates. The organoclays were extremely toxic to the survival and vigour of the earthworms. The average body weight loss of the worms reached as high as 62% in hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium modified bentonite treated soil even at 1% loading. This study holds utmost importance in assessing the toxicity of organoclays to soil microbially mediated processes and earthworms.

Optimization of cationic amino starch synthesis using biogenic amines

Harvesting microalgae presents a challenge in selecting the most economical method for low cost algal bioproducts. Previous studies have shown coagulation-flocculation to be the most efficient method for large scale microalgae harvesting. This study focused on modifying native potato starch with biogenic amines and optimizing the reaction parameters. Such modification rendered the starch cationic, with an ability to destabilize microalgae suspensions or colloids. The effect of time, temperature, and reactant concentrations on the zeta potential of the cationic amino starch was studied. Biogenic amines including putrescine, histamine, cadaverine, and tyramine were selected for study based on the number of nitrogen groups in their structure. Zeta potential for histamine cationic amino starch was significantly higher (+9.0±2.0 mV) at lower reaction temperatures, regardless of the amine to starch ratio and reaction time intervals. Putrescine, cadaverine, and tyramine cationic amino starches exhibited significantly higher zeta potential values (13.76±3.60, 6.81±1.64, and 5.68±1.60 mV, respectively) with amine to starch ratio higher than reaction stoichiometry, irrespective of reaction temperature or time intervals. This optimization study has presented a basis for designing reaction conditions for the synthesis of cationic amino starch from an inhomogeneous mix of biogenic amines derived from waste sources.

QSAR modeling of toxicity of acyclic quaternary ammonium compounds on Scenedesmus Quadricauda using 2D and 3D descriptors

Optimized calculation of typical acyclic quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) was performed at B3LYP/6-311G** level using density functional theory (DFT) method. A two- dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (2D-QSAR) model was established with the obtained structure parameters as theoretical descriptors. And then three-dimensional quantitative structure-activity relationship (3D-QSAR) models were built using comparative molecular field analysis (CoMFA) and comparative molecular similarity indices analysis (CoMSIA) methods respectively. The 2D and 3D QSAR models exhibit optimum stability and predictive ability, revealing that steric and electronic effects influence the toxicity of acyclic QACs to Scenedesmus Quadricauda mostly.

Temperature Effects in Anaerobic Biodegradation of Soaps in Anaerobic Screening Tests

Fatty acid salts (soap) are a widely used class of anionic surfactants. The applications are in fabric washing products, fabric conditioners, laundry additives and surface and toilet cleaners. The levels of soap found in the detergents applications ranges from approximately 10–15%. In this work, the percentage of biodegradation of two soaps, Na-laurate and Na-stearate has been determined under anaerobic conditions. The experiments carried out included the analysis of the effect of the temperature on the degradation of the soaps. A bath test system containing municipal digester sludge as a source of anaerobic bacteria, based on the method proposed by the ECETOC, has been applied.

Based on the experimental results in the anaerobic ECETOC test, soaps tested (Na-stearate at 20°C, 35°C, 55°C and Na-laurate at 35°C, 55°C) can be regarded as ultimately biodegradable compounds, and it can expected that they are completely biodegraded under anaerobic conditions if time period allows for that. On the other hand, Na-laurate at 55°C in concentrations of 200 and 400 mg C/L was not degradaded at test conditions.

Effects of Residual Hypochlorite Ion on Methane Production during the Initial Anaerobic Digestion Stage of Pig Slurry

The hypochlorite ion (OCl(-)) is a widely used disinfecting agent in pig rearing in Korea, but its residual effect on CH4 production from pig slurry is unclear. The objective of this study was to investigate the inhibition effects of residual OCl(-) on CH4 production during the initial anaerobic digestion stage of pig slurry. Three organic concentrations (9.9, 26.2 and 43.7 g/L) of volatile solids (VS) were tested with the addition of 52.3 mg/L OCl(-), ten times of the typical concentration used in Korea, or without OCl(-) (Control) in anaerobic batch culture. The culture was run under mesophilic (38°C) conditions for 20 d. At the lowest organic concentration with OCl(-), the VS degradation was 10.3% lower (p<0.05) than Control, while at the higher organic concentration with OCl(-), it did not differ from Control. CH4 yields were higher in the control treatments than their OCl(-) counterpart cultures, and CH4 yields of Control and OCl(-) treatments at the organic concentrations of 9.9, 26.2 and 43.7 g/L differed in the probability level (p) of 0.31, 0.04, and 0.06, respectively. Additionally, CH4 concentration increased steeply and reached 70.0% within 4 d in the absence OCl(-), but a gradual increase up to 60.0% was observed in 6 d in the OCl(-) treated cultures. The Rm (the maximum specific CH4 production rate) and λ (lag phase time) of 9.9 g/L with OCl(-) were 8.1 ml/d and 25.6 d, while the Rm was increased to 15.1 ml/d, and λ was reduced to 11.4 d in PS-III (higher organic concentration) with OCl(-). The results suggest that a prolonged fermentation time was necessary for the methanogens to overcome the initial OCl(-) inhibitory effect, and an anaerobic reactor operated with high organic loadings was more advantageous to mitigate the inhibitory effect of residual hypochlorite ion.

Ecotoxicity and biodegradability of antielectrostatic dicephalic cationic surfactants

Four series of dicephalic cationic surfactants, considered as new antielectrostatic agents have been investigated in order to establish their toxicity and biodegradability. Among them N,N-bis[3,3'-(dimethylamine)propyl]alkylamides, N,N-bis[3,3'-(dimethylamine)propyl]alkylamide dihydrochlorides, N,N-bis[3,3'-(trimethylammonio)propyl]alkylamide dibromides and N,N-bis[3,3'-(trimethylammonio)propyl]alkylamide dimethylsulphates with different hydrophobic chain length (n-C(9)H(19) to n-C(15)H(31)) and type of counterion (chloride, bromide and methylsulfate) have been studied. The inhibitory effect against microorganisms has been examined using model gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, and yeasts. None of the tested surfactants have shown antimicrobial activity against gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas putida) and yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Rhodotorula glutinis) at a concentration below 1000 μg mL(-1), however some of them were moderately active against gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis). The Microtox® test was successfully applied to measure EC(50) values of the studied dicephalic cationic surfactants. Their toxicity to Vibrio fischeri depended upon the alkanoyl chain length with the EC(50) values in a range of 2.6-980 mg L(-1). N,N-bis[3,3'-(dimethylamine)propyl]alkylamide dihydrochlorides 2a-b and N,N-bis[3,3'-(trimethylammonio)propyl]alkylamide dibromides 3a-b comprising n-decanoyl and n-dodecanoyl hydrophobic tails appeared to be the least toxic. Furthermore, the biodegradability under aerobic conditions of 2a-b, 3a-b was evaluated using OECD Method 301F. According to the obtained results 2a, 3a-3b can be considered as almost readily biodegradable and they are not expected to be persistent in the environment. Additionally, partial biodegradation was observed for 2b, indicating its possible biodegradation in wastewater treatment systems.

Review on the fate of emerging contaminants during sludge anaerobic digestion

Several research papers have been published during the last years investigating the occurrence, fate and effects of emerging contaminants (ECs) on sludge anaerobic digestion (AD). Literature review revealed that research has been mainly focused on specific groups of compounds (linear alkylbenzene sulphonates, nonylphenol ethoxylates, some pharmaceuticals, estrogens, phthalates), while there are fewer or no data for others (personal care products, perfluorinated compounds, brominated flame retardants, organotins, benzotriazoles, benzothiazoles, nanoparticles). AD operational parameters (sludge residence time, temperature), sludge characteristics (type of sludge, adaptation on the compound), physicochemical properties of ECs and co-metabolic phenomena seem to affect compounds' biodegradation. The use of sludge pretreatment methods does not seem to enhance ECs removal; whereas encouraging results have been reported when AD was combined with other treatment methods. Future efforts should be focused on better understanding of biotransformation processes and sorption phenomena occurred in anaerobic digesters, as well as on identification of (bio)transformation products.

Biotransformation of alkanoylcholines under methanogenic conditions

Ester quaternary ammonium compounds (esterquats), which are mainly used as active ingredients in fabric softeners and personal care products, are beginning to replace traditional quaternary ammonium compounds. As a result of hydrophobicity and increasing use, esterquats reach anaerobic treatment systems. However, little is known about the fate of esterquats under anaerobic conditions. In the present study, the potential inhibitory effect and biotransformation of two alkanoylcholines - acetylcholine chloride (ACh-Cl) and lauroylcholine chloride (LCh-Cl) - which are simple esterquats, under methanogenic conditions were investigated. ACh-Cl up to 300 mg/L was not inhibitory to a mixed methanogenic culture. In contrast, methanogenesis was inhibited by LCh-Cl above 50 mg/L, primarily caused by the accumulation of lauric acid which resulted from the abiotic hydrolysis of LCh. Below inhibitory concentrations, both ACh and LCh were transformed to methane by the mixed methanogenic culture. Mass spectrometric analysis confirmed that both alkanoylcholines were first abiotically hydrolyzed to choline and the corresponding alkanoic acid, which were then biotically transformed to methane, carbon dioxide, and ammonia. Thus, alkanoylcholine-containing waste streams can be bioprocessed to form methane, but hydrolysis products such as long-chain alkanoic acids may adversely impact the anaerobic bioconversion of alkanoylcholines.

Quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) study of toxicity of quaternary ammonium compounds on Chlorella pyrenoidosa and Scenedesmus quadricauda

The acute toxicity of 13 quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) to Chlorella pyrenoidosa and Scenedesmus quadricauda was investigated in the present study. Significant inhibition on algae biomass was observed and 96 h EC(50)-value of 13 QACs was tested. Sixteen physicochemical and quantum chemical parameters of the QACs were calculated using the semi-empirical MOPAC AMI method. The multiple linear regression (MLR) was employed to derive the quantitative structure-activity relationship (QSAR) models, by which the calculated parameters were correlated to the toxicity of QACs on the two green algaes. Results showed that the alkyl chain lengths (CL) and total connectivity (T(Con)) were the main descriptors in governing the log (1/EC(50)) values of the QACs in the two QSAR models. The two models had high predictive ability and stability, and two parameters were proved to have the general applicability in QSAR study of QACs congeners.

Mutagenicity of quaternary ammonium salts containing carbohydrate moieties

Quaternary ammonium salts are widely used in industrial, agricultural, healthcare and domestic applications. They are believed to be safe compounds, with little or no health hazard to humans. However, in this report, we demonstrate that a series of newly synthesized quaternary ammonium salts containing carbohydrate moieties reveal potent mutagenic activities, as assessed by using the Vibrio harveyi bioluminescence mutagenicity test. D-Gluco- and D-galacto-derivatives were found to have a higher mutagenic potential than D-manno-derivatives. Among the former groups of compounds, the N-[2-(D-glycopyranosyloxy)ethyl]-N,N,N-trimethylaminium salts were of the highest activity in the mutagenicity assay. These results suggest that the safety of quaternary ammonium salts may be lower than previously supposed, indicating a need for testing such compounds for their mutagenicity.

Occurrence of alkyltrimethylammonium compounds in urban estuarine sediments: behentrimonium as a new emerging contaminant

The distribution of alkyltrimethylammonium compounds (ATMAC), cationic surfactants used in a wide variety of applications, has been determined in sediments from Jamaica Bay (NY). Total concentrations in surficial sediments collected between 1998 and 2008 ranged from 361 to 6750 ng/g. The highest values were found in samples from a deeper basin directly affected by treated wastewater discharges. Behentrimonium, a mixture dominated by a homologue having 22 carbon atoms in its alkyl chain (ATMAC 22), was identified for the first time using time-of-flight mass spectrometry and accounted for approximately 80% of the total ATMAC in recent sediment samples. Analyses of a dated sediment core and subsequent surface grab samples revealed an exponential increase in concentration over the last three decades with a doubling time of 3.9 years. Similar temporal trends were seen in surface samples from other sites in Jamaica Bay and Newton Creek (NY), another site greatly influenced by wastewater discharges. This dramatic increase in ATMAC 22 reflects greater use of behentrimonium and likely replacement of other products containing other ATMAC homologues in personal care products. Further monitoring is recommended to assess the environmental risk and fate of this persistent emerging contaminant.
