Abstract
Given that anxiety disorders (AD) are associated with reduced vagally-mediated heart rate variability (HRV), genetic variants related to HRV may provide insight into anxiety etiology. This study used polygenic risk scores (PRS) to explore the genetic overlap between AD and HRV, and investigated whether HRV-related polymorphisms influence anxiety risk. Resting vagally-mediated HRV was measured using a wearable device in 188 European individuals (AD=101, healthy controls=87). AD PRS was tested for association with resting HRV, and HRV PRS for association with AD. We also investigated 15 significant hits from an HRV genome-wide association study (GWAS) for association with resting HRV and AD and if this association is mediated through resting HRV. The AD PRS and HRV PRS showed nominally significant associations with resting HRV and anxiety disorders, respectively. HRV GWAS variants associated with resting HRV were rs12980262 (NDUFA11), rs2680344 (HCN4), rs4262 and rs180238 (GNG11), and rs10842383 (LINC00477). Mediation analyses revealed that NDUFA11 rs12980262 A-carriers and GNG11 rs180238 and rs4262 C-carriers had higher anxiety risk through lower HRV. This study supports an anxiety-HRV genetic relationship, with HRV-related genetic variants translating to AD. This study encourages exploration of HRV genetics to understand mechanisms and identify novel treatment targets for anxiety.

Abstract
Background Previous physiology-driven pain studies focused on examining the presence or intensity of physical pain. However, people experience various types of pain, including social pain, which induces negative mood; emotional distress; and neural activities associated with physical pain. In particular, comparison of autonomic nervous system (ANS) responses between social and physical pain in healthy adults has not been well demonstrated. Methods We explored the ANS responses induced by two types of pain-social pain, associated with a loss of social ties; and physical pain, caused by a pressure cuff-based on multimodal physiological signals. Seventy-three healthy individuals (46 women; mean age = 20.67 ± 3.27 years) participated. Behavioral responses were assessed to determine their sensitivity to pain stimuli. Electrocardiogram, electrodermal activity, photoplethysmogram, respiration, and finger temperature (FT) were measured, and 12 features were extracted from these signals. Results Social pain induced increased heart rate (HR) and skin conductance (SC) and decreased blood volume pulse (BVP), pulse transit time (PTT), respiration rate (RR), and FT, suggesting a heterogeneous pattern of sympathetic-parasympathetic coactivation. Moreover, physical pain induced increased heart rate variability (HRV) and SC, decreased BVP and PTT, and resulted in no change in FT, indicating sympathetic-adrenal-medullary activation and peripheral vasoconstriction. Conclusion These results suggest that changes in HR, HRV indices, RR, and FT can serve as markers for differentiating physiological responses to social and physical pain stimuli.

Abstract
Heart rate (HR) and vagally mediated heart rate variability (HRV) are two distinct biomarkers of cardiac autonomic activity. Decreased cardiac vagal activity (or decreased HRV) in particular has been linked with impairments in the functional flexibility of the central autonomic network (CAN), resulting in impaired stress and emotion regulatory capacities. Decreased HRV is widely used as trait marker of psychopathology. Repetitive engagement in non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in adolescence correlates with both deficits in stress and emotion regulation, as well as decreased HRV. Existing research has, however, focused on short-term recordings of HR and HRV under resting and phasic conditions. In this study, we examined whether diurnal variation of cardiac autonomic activity, indexed by cosinor parameters of HR and HRV derived from 48 h of ambulatory ECG recording under natural conditions over a weekend, are altered in female adolescents with NSSI disorder compared to controls (HC; N = 30 per study group). Several important confounds, including physical activity, were controlled for. Female adolescents with NSSI show higher rhythm-adjusted 24 h mean levels and greater respective amplitude of HR, as well as lower rhythm-adjusted 24 h mean levels and smaller respective amplitude of HRV. Peak levels in both HR and HRV in the NSSI group were reached approximately 1 h later compared to HC. Severity of exposure to early life maltreatment might be linked with altered amplitudes of 24 h HR and HRV. Diurnal rhythms of cardiac autonomic activity might hold promise as objective indicators of disordered stress and emotion regulation in developmental psychopathology, and as such should be investigated in future studies with rigorous assessment and control of potential confounds.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Professional rugby union is a high-intensity contact sport with position-specific high training and match volumes across a season that may lead to periods of fatigue if above a typically experienced threshold. This study assesses the influence of match play and/or training on fatigue levels in rugby union players. OBJECTIVE We aimed to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of measures used to assess fatigue status in male professional rugby union players. METHODS Using electronic databases (PubMed, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and MEDLINE), a systematic review of fatigue testing in rugby union was conducted on (1) neuromuscular, (2) subjective self-report, (3) biochemical, and (4) heart rate-derived measures. RESULTS Thirty-seven articles were included in this systematic review, of which 14 were further included in a meta-analysis. The results of the meta-analysis revealed small, yet not significant, decreases in countermovement jump height immediately after (effect size [ES] = - 0.29; 95% confidence interval [CI] - 0.64 to 0.06), 24 h (ES = - 0.43; 95% CI - 3.99 to 3.21), and 48 h (ES = - 0.22; 95% CI - 0.47 to 0.02) after exposure to rugby union match play or training. Reported wellness (ES = - 0.33; 95% CI - 1.70 to 1.04) and tiredness (ES = - 0.14; 95% CI - 1.30 to 1.03) declined over a period of a few weeks (however, the results were not-statistically significant), meanwhile muscle soreness increased (ES = 0.91; 95% CI 0.06 to 1.75) within the 96 h after the exposure to rugby union match play or training. Finally, while cortisol levels (ES = 1.87; 95% CI - 1.54 to 5.29) increased, testosterone declined (ES = - 1.54; 95% CI - 7.16 to 4.08) within the 24 h after the exposure. However, these results were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS Subjective measures of muscle soreness can be used to assess fatigue after match play and training in rugby union players. Within-study and between-study variability for countermovement jump height, biochemical markers, and heart rate-derived measures means the utility (practical application) of these measures to assess fatigue in professional rugby union players after matches and training is unclear. Abstract
Foxb1 -expressing neurons occur in the dorsal premammillary nucleus (PMd) and further rostrally in the parvafox nucleus, a longitudinal cluster of neurons in the lateral hypothalamus of rodents. The descending projection of these Foxb1+ neurons end in the dorsolateral part of the periaqueductal gray (dlPAG). The functional role of the Foxb1+ neuronal subpopulation in the PMd and the parvafox nucleus remains elusive. In this study, the activity of the Foxb1+ neurons and of their terminal endings in the dlPAG in mice was selectively altered by employing chemo- and optogenetic tools. Our results show that in whole-body barometric plethysmography, hM3Dq-mediated, global Foxb1+ neuron excitation activates respiration. Time-resolved optogenetic gain-of-function manipulation of the terminal endings of Foxb1+ neurons in the rostral third of the dlPAG leads to abrupt immobility and bradycardia. Chemogenetic activation of Foxb1+ cell bodies and ChR2-mediated excitation of their axonal endings in the dlPAG led to a phenotypical presentation congruent with a 'freezing-like' situation during innate defensive behavior.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Heart rate variability (HRV) is becoming more prevalent as a measurable parameter in wearable sleep-monitoring devices, which are simple and effective instruments for illness evaluation. Currently, most studies on investigating OSA severity and HRV have measured heart rates during wakefulness or sleep. Therefore, the objective of this study was to investigate the circadian rhythm of HRV in male patients with OSA and its value for the estimation of OSA severity using group-based trajectory modeling. METHODS Patients with complaints of snoring were enrolled from the Sleep Center of Shandong Qianfoshan Hospital. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to apnea hypopnea index (AHI in events/h), as follows: (<15, 15≤AHI<30, and ≥30). HRV parameters were calculated using 24 h Holter monitoring, which included time-domain and frequency-domain indices. Circadian differences in the standard deviation of normal to normal (SDNN) were evaluated for OSA severity using analysis of variance, trajectory analysis, and multinomial logistic regression. RESULTS A total of 228 patients were enrolled, 47 with mild OSA, 48 moderate, and 133 severe. Patients with severe OSA exhibited reduced triangular index and higher very low frequency than those in the other groups. Circadian HRV showed that nocturnal SDNN was considerably higher than daytime SDNN in patients with severe OSA. The difference among the OSA groups was significant at 23, 24, 2, and 3 o'clock sharp between the severe and moderate OSA groups (all P<0.05). The heterogeneity of circadian HRV trajectories in OSA was strongly associated with OSA severity, including sleep structure and hypoxia-related parameters. Among the low-to-low, low-to-high, high-to-low, and high-to-high groups, OSA severity in the low-to-high group was the most severe, especially compared with the low-to-low and high-to-low SDNN groups, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Circadian HRV in patients with OSA emerged as low daytime and high nocturnal in SDNN, particularly in men with severe OSA. The heterogeneity of circadian HRV revealed that trajectories with low daytime and significantly high nighttime were more strongly associated with severe OSA. Thus, circadian HRV trajectories may be useful to identify the severity of OSA.

Abstract
To ensure both optimal health and performances, monitoring physiological and psychological states is of main importance for athletes. It is well known that monitoring heart rate variability and using validated questionnaires is useful for monitoring both the health and training status of athletes of different sports. Motorsports such as rally require high levels of physical and mental preparation thus information about psychophysiological status of rally athletes is fundamental. The aim of this study was to assess the autonomic regulation, stress, recovery conditions of one driver and one co-driver competing at the Italian National Rally Championship during their competition period. Heart rate variability parameters, acute recovery and stress states were assessed the day before, during the two days of race and the day following the races. Results showed that driver and co-driver had a sharp decrease of mean RR intervals, root mean square of successive differences between normal heartbeats, and standard deviation of the N-N interval during race days, while the stress index showed the inverse trend, and this behaviour was clearly visible in the Poincaré plots and power spectrum density graphs. The acute recovery and stress states questionnaire showed significant differences in recovery and stress scoring for the driver but not for the co-driver, although the trends were similar. This study describes the psychophysiological demands of a rally competition period suggesting that a daily evaluation of heart rate variability, recovery, stress states is useful for monitoring health status in rally athletes and could be implemented to make decision about training and recovery strategies.

Abstract
PURPOSE To perform a systematic review of studies assessing the effects of regular exercise on heart rate variability (HRV) in individuals with lower extremity arterial disease (LEAD) and symptoms of claudication. METHODS A systematic search in the electronic databases MEDLINE, Embase, and Scielo, was conducted and updated on January 21, 2023. Randomized clinical trials investigating patients with LEAD and IC, assessing ≥ 4 wk of exercise interventions, and reporting at least one HRV measure (e.g., time or frequency domains) at baseline and follow-up were included. Two reviewers independently screened studies for inclusion, performed data extraction, and quality assessment of included studies. RESULTS Data from 7 trials were included (i.e., 5 walking, 1 resistance, and 1 isometric handgrip training), totaling 327 patients (66% males; range: 61 - 68 yr; ankle brachial index: 0.4 - 0.7). Following exercise training, three studies investigating walking training reported an increase in parasympathetic modulation indices and/or a decrease in sympathetic modulation indices (n = 2) as well as an increase in non-linear indices (n = 1). CONCLUSION The current evidence is weak, and larger randomized controlled trials are needed to confirm the efficacy of exercise training in improving HRV. Additionally, the high divergence in the methodology of studies indicated the need for standard tools to improve the quality of HRV measurements in exercise trials. It is recommended to use standard procedures in future trials investigating HRV.

Abstract
Immersive virtual reality (VR) is a promising tool to reduce pain in clinical setting. Digital scripts displayed by VR disposals can be enriched by several analgesic interventions, which are widely used to reduce pain. One of these techniques is hypnosis induced through the VR script (VRH) which is facilitated by immersive environment and particularly efficient even for low hypnotizable patients. The aim of this study is to assess the efficacy of a VRH script on experimentally induced cold pain perception (intensity and unpleasantness) and physiological expression. 41 healthy volunteers had been recruited in this within-subjects study. They received 9 stimulations of 20 s (3 non-nociceptive cold; 3 low nociceptive cold and 3 highly nociceptive cold) during a VRH session of 20 min (VRH condition) or without VRH (noVRH condition). Physiological monitoring during the cold pain stimulation protocol consisted of recording heart rate, heart rate variability and respiratory frequency. Maximum cold pain intensity perception, measured through the visual analog scale (VAS) on 10, was of 3.66 ± 1.84 (VAS score/10) in noVRH condition and 2.46 ± 1.54 in VRH (Wilcoxon, p < 0.0001). Considering pain unpleasantness perception, 3.68 ± 2.06 in noVRH and 2.21 ± 1.63 in VRH (Wilcoxon, p < 0.0001). Hypnotizability negatively correlated with the decrease in VAS intensity from noVRH to VRH (Spearman r = -0.45; p = 0.0038). In our sample, we found that 31/41 volunteers (75.6%) displayed a reduction of more than 10% of their VAS pain intensity and unpleasantness scores. Trait anxiety was the best predictor of the VRH responders, as well as heart rate variability. In addition, respiratory rate was diminished under VRH in every subgroup. VRH is an effective tool to reduced pain intensity and unpleasantness in a vast majority of healthy subjects. We further indicate in this study that heart rate variability parameter RMSSD (root mean square of successive differences) is a good predictor of this effect, as well as anxiety as a personality trait (but not state anxiety). Further studies are expected to determine more precisely to whom it will be the most useful to offer tailored, non-pharmacological pain management solutions to patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Heart rate variability (HRV) is a measure of cardiac autonomic function. This study: (1) evaluated the differences in HRV and haemodynamic function between individuals with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and healthy controls, and (2) determined the relationship between HRV and haemodynamic variables in individuals with HCM. METHODS Twenty-eight individuals with HCM (n = 7, females; age 54 ± 15 years; body mass index: 29 ± 5 kg/m2 ) and 28 matched healthy individuals (n = 7 females; age 54 ± 16 years; body mass index: 29 ± 5 kg/m2 ) completed 5-min HRV and haemodynamic measurements under resting (supine) conditions using bioimpedance technology. Frequency domain HRV measures (absolute and normalized low-frequency power (LF), high-frequency power (HF) and LF/HF ratio) and RR interval were recorded. RESULTS Individuals with HCM demonstrated higher vagal activity (i.e., absolute unit of HF power (7.40 ± 2.50 vs. 6.03 ± 1.35 ms2 , p = 0.01) but lower RR interval (914 ± 178 vs. 1014 ± 168 ms, p = 0.03) compared to controls. Stroke volume (SV) index and cardiac index were lower in HCM compared with healthy individuals (SV, 33 ± 9 vs. 43 ± 7 ml/beat/m², p < 0.01; cardiac index,2.33 ± 0.42 vs. 3.57 ± 0.82 L/min/m2 , p < 0.01), but total peripheral resistance (TPR) was higher in HCM (3468 ± 1027 vs. 2953 ± 1050 dyn·s·m2 cm-5 , p = 0.03). HF power was significantly related to SV (r = -0.46, p < 0.01) and TPR (r = 0.28, p < 0.05) in HCM. CONCLUSIONS Short-term frequency domain indices of HRV provide a feasible approach to assess autonomic function in individuals with HCM. Vagal activity, represented by HF power, is increased, and associated with peripheral resistance in individuals with HCM.

Abstract
Despite medical advances in the treatment of heart failure (HF), mortality remains high. It has been shown that alterations of the autonomic-nervous-system (ANS) are associated with HF progression and increased mortality. Preclinical models are required to evaluate the effectiveness of novel treatments modulating the autonomic imbalance. However, there are neither standard models nor diagnostic methods established to measure sympathetic and parasympathetic outflow continuously. Digital technologies might be a reliable tool for continuous assessment of autonomic function within experimental HF models. Telemetry devices and pacemakers were implanted in beagle dogs (n = 6). HF was induced by ventricular pacing. Cardiac hemodynamics, plasma catecholamines and parameter describing the ANS ((heart rate variability (HRV), deceleration capacity (DC), and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS)) were continuously measured at baseline, during HF conditions and during recovery phase. The pacing regime led to the expected depression in cardiac hemodynamics. Telemetric assessment of the ANS function showed a significant decrease in Total power, DC, and Heart rate recovery, whereas BRS was not significantly affected. In contrast, plasma catecholamines, revealing sympathetic activity, showed only a significant increase in the recovery phase. A precise diagnostic of the ANS in the context of HF is becoming increasingly important in experimental models. Up to now, these models have shown many limitations. Here we present the continuous assessment of the autonomic function in the progression of HF. We could demonstrate the advantage of highly resolved ANS measurement by HR and BP derived parameters due to early detection of an autonomic imbalance in the progression of HF.

Abstract
Pulse rate variability (PRV) signals are extracted from pulsation signal can be effectively used for cardiovascular disease monitoring in wearable devices. Permutation entropy (PE) algorithm is an effective index for the analysis of PRV signals. However, PE is computationally intensive and impractical for online PRV processing on wearable devices. Therefore, to overcome this challenge, a fast permutation entropy (FPE) algorithm is proposed based on the microprocessor data updating process in this paper, which can analyze PRV signals with single-sample recursive. The simulation data and PRV signals extracted from pulse signals in "Fantasia database" were utilized to verify the performance and accuracy of the improved methods. The results show that the speed of FPE is 211 times faster than PE and maintain the accuracy of algorithm (Root Mean Squared Error = 0) for simulation data with a length of 10,000 samples and embedded dimension m = 5, time delay τ = 5, buffer length Lw = 512. For the RRV signals with 3000∼5000 samples, the result show that the consumption of FPE is less than 0.2 s, which is 175 times faster than PE. This indicates that FPE has better application performance than PE. Furthermore, a low-cost wearable signal detection system is developed to verify the proposed method, the result show that the proposed method can calculate the FPE of PRV signal online with single-sample recursive calculation. Subsequently, entropy-based features are used to explore the performance of decision trees in identifying life-threatening arrhythmias, and the method resulted in a classification accuracy of 85.43%. It can therefore be inferred that the proposed method has great potential in cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
Heart rate variability (HRV) has the potential to be a predicting factor of cognitive performance. The present research aimed to explore the differences in neurocognitive performance of workers with high HRV and low HRV. A total of 48 white-collar workers and 53 blue-collar workers were assessed. An electrocardiogram was used to obtain HRV data, whereby a 10 min baseline and an active (neuropsychological task) recording were taken. Median splits were performed on data to obtain high- and low-HRV groups. The Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery, specifically, the spatial working memory, attention-switching task, rapid visual processing, and spatial span were used. Higher HRV (RMSSD and HF) was linked to better neurocognitive performance measures. Interestingly, the blue- and white-collar groups exhibited different correlations and, in some cases, showed an inverse relationship with the same variables. The differences observed in the present study demonstrate the importance of assessing task-dependent HRV parameters.

Findings with transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (taVNS) have been disappointing in this respect, as its effects on vmHRV are inconsistent at best. It has been speculated that combining taVNS with other established ways to increase vmHRV may produce synergistic effects. To test this idea, the present study combined taVNS with slow breathing in a cross-over design. A total of 22 participants took part in two sessions of breathing at 6 breaths/min: once combined with taVNS, and once combined with sham stimulation. Electrical stimulation (100 Hz, 400 µs) was applied during expiration, either to the tragus and cavum conchae (taVNS) or to the earlobe (sham). ECG was recorded during baseline, 20-minutes of stimulation, and the recovery period. Frequentist and Bayesian analyses showed no effect of taVNS (in comparison to sham stimulation) on the root mean square of successive differences between normal heartbeats, mean inter-beat interval, or spectral power of heart rate variability at a breathing frequency of 0.1 Hz. These findings suggest that expiratory-gated taVNS combined with the stimulation parameters examined here does not produce acute effects on vmHRV during slow breathing.

Abstract
PURPOSE We compared heart rate variability parameters between patients with spina bifida and a control group during urodynamic studies, with the goal of evaluating the autonomic nervous system dysfunction present in spina bifida. METHODS Continuous heart rate variability parameters were recorded during 3 successive periods (P0, the 2 minutes prior to the start of filling; P1, from the start of filling to the first desire to void; and P2, from P1 to the end of filling or the start of voiding). The control group consisted of children with vesicoureteral reflux who had undergone video-urodynamic studies. Our study included 11 patients with spina bifida and 9 control participants. RESULTS At baseline, patients with spina bifida exhibited lower values for the root mean square of successive differences in NN intervals, the percentage of successive R-R interval differences exceeding 50 msec relative to the total number of intervals, and high frequency (HF). In contrast, the low frequency (LF)/HF ratio was elevated in these patients (5.04 ± 4.75 vs. 0.67 ± 0.42, P = 0.014). During bladder filling, LF/HF values increased in the control group (P0, 0.67 ± 0.42; P1, 0.89 ± 0.34; P2, 1.21 ± 0.64; P = 0.018), while they declined in patients with spina bifida (P0, 5.04 ± 4.75; P1, 3.96 ± 4.35; P2, 3.26 ± 4.03; P < 0.001). The HF values were significantly elevated in children with spina bifida during bladder filling (P = 0.002). In the time domain, the standard deviations of all NN intervals were elevated only in the control group during bladder filling. Parasympathetic activity domains were reduced in the children with spina bifida at the initial assessment. CONCLUSION During the bladder filling phase, parasympathetic activity increased along with fixed sympathetic activity in the spina bifida group. In contrast, the control group exhibited a shift towards a sympathetic preponderance at the conclusion of bladder filling. These observations may be associated with the pathophysiology of neurogenic bladder in spina bifida.

Abstract
The assessment of heart rate variability (HRV) upon waking has been proposed as a method to evaluate mental health; however, owing to large individual differences among athletes, it is unclear whether HRV is adequate to predict mental health decline. In this study, we sought to establish this by evaluating HRV upon awakening in one athlete over 20 months. We assessed mental health once a month by calculating the depression index. In addition, self-reported training load and psychological fatigue index were assessed as psychological indices for athletes. Heart rate and HRV were each measured three days per week in both resting (supine) and standing (upright) positions. The results showed that orthostatic HRV upon waking had moderate linear relationships with the scores on the depression index and psychological fatigue index. By contrast, self-reported training load, a measure of physical stressor, was not associated with HRV. The findings suggest that the repeated assessment of HRV upon waking and mental health indicators may be useful in preventing mental health decline in athletes.

Abstract
The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), a classic "environmental sensor", has been found to play an important role in cognitive and emotional function. Recent studies showed AhR deletion led to an attenuated fear memory, providing a potential target against fear memory, whether it is the consequence of attenuated sense of fear or memory ability deficit or both is unclear. Here this study aims to work this out. The freezing time in contextual fear conditioning (CFC) reduced significantly in AhR knockout mice, indicating an attenuated fear memory. Hot plate test and acoustic startle reflex showed that AhR knockout did not change the pain threshold and hearing, excluded the possibility of sensory impairments. Results from NORT, MWM and SBT showed that deletion of AhR had little effects on other types of memory. But the anxiety-like behaviors reduced both in naïve or suffered (tested after CFC) AhR knockout mice, showing that AhR-deficient mice have a reduced basal and stressful emotional response. The basal low-frequency to high-frequency (LF/HF) ratio of the AhR knockout mice was significantly lower than that of the control group, indicating lower sympathetic excitability in the basal state, suggesting a low level of basal stress in the knockout mice. Before and after CFC, the LF/HF ratio of AhR-KO mice tended to be significantly lower than that of WT mice, and their heart rate was significantly lower; and the AhR-KO mice also has a decreased serum corticosterone level after CFC, suggesting a reduced stress response in AhR knockout mice. Altogether, the basal stress level and stress response were significant reduced in AhR knockout mice, which might contribute to the attenuated fear memory with little impairment on other types of memory, suggesting AhR as a "psychologic sensor" additional to "environmental sensor".

Abstract
Objective A novel protocol for paired associative stimulation (PAS), called high PAS, consists of high-intensity transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and high-frequency peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS). High PAS was developed for spinal cord injury rehabilitation and targets plastic changes in stimulated pathways in the corticospinal tract, which improves motor function. As therapy interventions can last many weeks, it is important to fully understand the effects of high PAS, including its effect on the cardiovascular system. Heart rate variability (HRV) has been used to measure changes in both sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. Methods We used short-term HRV measurements to evaluate the effects of one 20-min session of high PAS on 17 healthy individuals. HRV was recorded for 5 min before (PRE), during (STIM), immediately after (POST), 30 min after (POST30), and 60 min after (POST60) the stimulation. Five participants repeated the HRV setup with sham stimulation. Results A significant decrease in low-frequency (LF) power (n.u.) (p = 0.002), low-frequency to high-frequency (HF) ratio (p = 0.017), in Poincaré plot [the standard deviation of RR intervals perpendicular to (SD1) and along (SD2) the line of identity SD2/SD1 ratio p < 0.001], and an increase in HF power (n.u.) (p = 0.002) were observed between PRE and STIM conditions; these changes were fully reversible immediately after stimulation. PRE to POST by 3% (p = 0.015) and continued to decline until POST60 by 5% (p = 0.011). LF power (ms2) (p = 0.017) and SD2 (p = 0.015) decreased from PRE to STIM and increased from PRE to POST (p = 0.025 and p = 0.017, respectively). The results from sham PAS exhibited a trend similar to active high-PAS stimulation. Conclusions High PAS does not have sustained effects during 60-min follow-up on cardiovascular functions, as measured by HRV. None of the short-term results indicates activation of the sympathetic nervous system in healthy individuals. Observed changes in HRV indicate higher parasympathetic activity during stimulation, which is reversible, and is plausibly explained by the fact that the participants spend 20 min without moving, talking, or using phones while being stimulated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The pulmonary impairment in patients with bronchoconstriction induced by eucapnic voluntary hyperpnea(EVH) goes beyond the respiratory system, also impairing autonomic nervous modulation. This study aimed to evaluate the behavior of cardiac autonomic modulation in young asthmatics with and without EIB after the EVH test. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS A cross-sectional study design using 54 asthmatics(51.9% female), aged between 10 and 19 years, investigated with the EVH test. Forced expiratory volume in one second(FEV1) was measured at 5, 10, 15, and 30 min after EVH. Heart rate variability(HRV) measures of time were assessed pre and 30 min-post EVH. The diagnosis of Exercise-Induced bronchoconstriction with underlying clinical asthma(EIBA) was confirmed by a fall in FEV1 ≥10% compared to baseline. RESULTS Thirty(55.5%) asthmatics had EIBA. Subjects with EIBA have reduced mean of the R-R intervals in relation to baseline until 15 minutes after EVH. Individuals without EIBA had increased parasympathetic activity compared to baseline(rMSSD) from 5 min after EVH(p < 0.05). This parasympathetic activity increase in relation to baseline was seen in individuals with EIBA after 25 minutes (rMSSD = 49.9 ± 5.3 vs 63.5 ± 7.2, p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Young asthmatics with EIBA present a delay in the increase of the parasympathetic component after EVH when compared to asthmatics without EIBA.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Depression and anxiety in patients with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) are associated with adverse outcomes. This study describes the design of the PSYCHE-ICD study and evaluates the correlation between cardiac status and depression and anxiety in ICD patients. METHODS We included 178 patients. Prior to implantation, patients completed validated psychological questionnaires for depression, anxiety and personality traits. Cardiac status was evaluated by means of left ventricular ejection fraction assessment (LVEF), New York Heart Association (NYHA) functional class, 6-minute walk test (6MWT), and 24-h Holter monitoring for heart rate variability (HRV). A cross-sectional analysis was performed. Follow-up with annual study visits, including repeated full cardiac evaluation, will continue 36 months after ICD implantation. RESULTS Depressive symptoms were present in 62 (35%) and anxiety in 56 (32%) patients. Values of depression and anxiety significantly increased with higher NYHA class (P < 0.001). Depression symptoms were correlated with a reduced 6MWT (411 ± 128 vs. 488 ± 89, P < 0.001), higher heart rate (74 ± 13 vs. 70 ± 13, P = 0.02), higher thyroid stimulation hormone levels (1.8 [1.3-2.8] vs 1.5 [1.0-2.2], P = 0.03) and multiple HRV parameters. Anxiety symptoms were correlated with higher NYHA class and a reduced 6MWT (433 ± 112 vs 477 ± 102, P = 0.02). CONCLUSION A substantial part of patients receiving an ICD have symptoms of depression and anxiety at time of ICD implantation. Depression and anxiety were correlated with multiple cardiac parameters, suggesting a possible biological links between psychological distress and cardiac disease in ICD patients.

Abstract
Autonomic neural control of the cardiovascular system is formed of complex and dynamic processes able to adjust rapidly to mitigate perturbations in hemodynamics and maintain homeostasis. Alterations in autonomic control feature in the development or progression of a multitude of diseases with wide-ranging physiological implications given the neural system's responsibility for controlling inotropy, chronotropy, lusitropy, and dromotropy. Imbalances in sympathetic and parasympathetic neural control are also implicated in the development of arrhythmia in several cardiovascular conditions sparking interest in autonomic modulation as a form of treatment. A number of measures of autonomic function have shown prognostic significance in health and in pathological states and have undergone varying degrees of refinement, yet adoption into clinical practice remains extremely limited. The focus of this contemporary narrative review is to summarize the anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology of the cardiovascular autonomic nervous system and describe the merits and shortfalls of testing modalities available. © 2023 American Physiological Society. Abstract
Identifying factors that influence how individuals who smoke cigarettes respond to stress is important as stress is a risk factor for smoking and its maintenance. This study examined the modulatory role of cardiac vagal control (CVC), a physiological correlate of self-regulation, on cognitive stress appraisal processes of adults who smoke. Sixty daily cigarette smokers were randomized to receive positive or negative feedback during a modified Trier Social Stress Test. Pre- and post-task stress appraisals were assessed and resting and reactivity CVC measures were computed. Moderated regression models assessed if the relation between feedback condition and post-task stress appraisal varied as a function of CVC. We hypothesized that participants receiving negative feedback would report greater post-task stress appraisal compared to participants receiving positive feedback, and the strength of the effect of both feedback groups would be greater at higher levels of CVC. All models showed significant main effects of feedback condition (b = - 0.42, p = 0.01; b = - 0.45, p = 0.01) on post-task stress appraisal: participants receiving negative feedback reported greater post-task stress appraisal. No significant main or interactive effects of CVC and feedback condition on post-task stress appraisal were observed. This study demonstrates that stress appraisals of daily cigarette smokers are sensitive to social feedback, but are not moderated by individual differences in CVC. Future investigations are needed to clarify whether this finding is explained by smoking-specific impairments in CVC as well as the distinct and interactive effects of physiological and psychological processes implicated in stress and smoking risk.

Abstract
The 21st century has brought a growing and significant focus on performance and health within the workforce, with the aim of improving the health and performance of the blue- and white-collar workforce. The present research investigated heart rate variability (HRV) and psychological performance between blue and white-collar workers to determine if differences were evident. A total of 101 workers (n = 48 white-collar, n = 53 blue-collar, aged 19-61 years) underwent a three lead electrocardiogram to obtain HRV data during baseline (10 min) and active (working memory and attention) phases. The Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery, specifically the spatial working memory, attention switching task, rapid visual processing and the spatial span, were used. Differences in neurocognitive performance measures indicated that white-collar workers were better able to detect sequences and make less errors than blue-collar workers. The heart rate variability differences showed that white-collar workers exhibit lower levels of cardiac vagal control during these neuropsychological tasks. These initial findings provide some novel insights into the relationship between occupation and psychophysiological processes and further highlight the interactions between cardiac autonomic variables and neurocognitive performance in blue and white-collar workers.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with coronavirus disease 2019 on automatic mechanical ventilation have greater heart rate modulation with greater parasympathetic modulation. OBJECTIVE To analyze the autonomic modulation of heart rate in critically ill patients with coronavirus disease 2019 on invasive mechanical ventilation. METHODS A cross-section study was carried out with 36 individuals divided into two groups. The control group included patients of both genders, in orotracheal intubation with invasive mechanical ventilation under controlled assisted mode, hospitalized in the intensive care unit for another 24 h. In the non-COVID group, patients diagnosed with coronavirus disease 2019 in the same condition mentioned in the control group. RESULTS There was a significant increase in heart rate variability (standard deviation of all normal RR intervals recorded at an interval of time; p=0.001; triangular interpolation histogram of RR intervals; p=0.048; and SD2; p=0.014) in the coronavirus disease group compared to the non-COVID group. Successively, the parameters that demonstrate parasympathetic modulation are shown to be higher in the group of patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (root mean square of the square of differences between adjacent normal RR intervals in an interval of time; p<0.001; pNN50; p<0.001; SD1; p=0.002; and high frequency; p=0.022). CONCLUSIONS There was a greater autonomic modulation of heart rate with a greater parasympathetic modulation in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 on mechanical ventilation.

Abstract
Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis has emerged as a simple and non-invasive technique to indirectly evaluate the autonomic nervous system (ANS), and it is considered a sensible and advanced index of health status. Pulsed electromagnetic fields (PEMFs) are widely used in clinical settings for improving the health status of individuals with chronic musculoskeletal pain. The aim of the present single-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled parallel pilot study was to investigate the acute effect of a single session of PEMFs stimulation by a PAP ion magnetic induction (PAPIMI) device on ANS activity, as measured by HRV, in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain, and compare such effect with that induced by a sham (control) PAPIMI inductor. Thirty-two patients were randomized into two groups: PAPIMI intervention (PAP) (n = 17) and sham PAPIMI intervention (SHAM-PAP) (n = 15). HRV was assessed before and following the interventions. The PAP group showed a significant increase in all values of the time-domain parameters (SDNN, RMSSD, NN50, and pNN50) and the HF component of HRV, suggesting a parasympathetic effect. In contrast, the SHAM-PAP group showed no significant differences in all HRV indices following the intervention. Preliminary findings suggested that PAPIMI inductor could influence ANS activity and provided initial evidence of the potential physiological response induced by the PAPIMI device.

Abstract
Cardiac innervation by the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) and the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) modulates the heart rate (HR) (chronotropic activity) and the contraction of the cardiac muscle (inotropic activity). The peripheral vasculature is controlled only by the SNS, which is responsible for peripheral vascular resistance. This also mediates the baroreceptor reflex (BR), which in turn mediates blood pressure (BP). Hypertension (HTN) and the autonomic nervous system (ANS) are closely related, such that derangements can lead to vasomotor impairments and several comorbidities, including obesity, hypertension, resistant hypertension, and chronic kidney disease. Autonomic dysfunction is also associated with functional and structural changes in target organs (heart, brain, kidneys, and blood vessels), increasing cardiovascular risk. Heart rate variability (HRV) is a method of assessing cardiac autonomic modulation. This tool has been used for clinical evaluation and to address the effect of therapeutic interventions. The present review aims (a) to approach the heart rate (HR) as a CV risk factor in hypertensive patients; (b) to analyze the heart rate variability (HRV) as a "tool" to estimate the individual risk stratum for Pre-HTN (P-HTN), Controlled-HTN (C-HTN), Resistant and Refractory HTN (R-HTN and Rf-HTN, respectively), and hypertensive patients with chronic renal disease (HTN+CKD).

Abstract
Impairments in cardiac vagal control (CVC) have been independently linked to smoking status and depression and are implicated in self-regulatory processes that may exacerbate depressive symptoms and maintain smoking behavior. Yet, few studies have examined how depressive symptoms, even at low levels, influence CVC reactivity among individuals who smoke. Investigating these relationships may provide novel insights into how depressive symptoms exacerbate existing regulatory vulnerabilities among smokers. This study investigated how depression symptoms affect CVC reactivity as a function of changing situational demands among a community sample of 60 daily adult cigarette smokers. Participants completed a mildly demanding cognitive task while physiological data was recorded. Growth curve modeling was used to examine the main and interactive effects of self-reported depressive symptoms on CVC reactivity over the course of the task. We hypothesized that greater depressive symptoms would be associated with less CVC reactivity, characterized by smaller initial reductions in CVC values and a flatter slope over time. Participants were daily smokers with mild to moderate levels of depression. Final model results, where time was specified as linear and the slope was fixed, showed no significant main or interactive effects of time and depression symptoms on CVC reactivity. Findings suggest that at low to moderate levels, depressive symptom severity is not related to patterns of CVC reactivity among adults who smoke. This is the first study to examine this relationship in this population. Future investigations that examine patterns of CVC reactivity among smokers and non-smokers with more severe depression are needed.

Abstract
Impairments in decision-making have been reported in brain-damaged (stroke/traumatic brain injury) patients with a wide range of lesion sites. Here, we propose that the performances of patients in complex sequential decision-making (DM) tasks can be explained by their negative affectivity, leading to deliberative processing associated with poor DM performances. We assumed that a slow-paced breathing (SPB) training, by reducing negative affectivity would improve performances in a complex DM task. For 24 days, 34 brain-damaged patients (16 males and 18 females; 12 had a hemorrhagic stroke, 17 with an ischemic stroke and 5 with a TBI), practiced either daily SPB or sham trainings for five min, three times a day. Before and after training, we assessed their vagal tone (electrocardiogram-ECG), affectivity (Positive and Negative Affect Schedule-PANAS) and certainty level (Dimensional Ratings Questionnaire-DRQ) and their performance on the Iowa Gambling Task. All participants showed initial weak performance, which improved only for patients in the SPB training condition. These results suggest that DM disorders in brain-damaged patients can be the consequence of their poor information processing strategy rather than an impairment in their DM abilities. Second, we showed that SPB could be efficient to normalize DM processes in brain injury patients.

Abstract
Three-dimensional multiple object tracking (3D-MOT) has been used in various fields to mimic real-life tracking, especially in perceptual-cognitive skills training for soccer. Yet, the learning efficiency in 3D-MOT tasks has not been compared with 2D-MOT. Further, whether the advantage can be reflected by heart rate variability (HRV) based on the neurovisceral integration model should also be examined. Therefore, we used both 2D- and 3D-MOT in a brief adaptive task procedure for adolescent female soccer players with HRV measurement. A faster tracking speed threshold of participants was found in the 3D- compared to 2D-MOT, as well as average tracking speed in the last training period of 3D-MOT. Moreover, lower low frequency (LF) components of HRV in the 3D-MOT indicated a flow experience, demonstrating the provision of more attentional resources. Therefore, we observed that adolescent female soccer players demonstrated higher learning efficiency in 3D-MOT tasks in virtual reality (VR) through a higher flow experience. This study examined the learning efficiency between the two MOT tasks in the soccer domain using evidence from HRV and highlighted the utility and applicability of 3D-MOT application.

Abstract
Whole-body cryotherapy (WBC) has been reported to maximize physical recovery after exercise and reduce the ensuing muscle damage. In addition, WBC triggers cardiovascular responses leading to an increased vagal drive. Here we tested whether WBC may boost exercise performance as well as post-exercise recovery. Moreover, we compared the effects of WBC and exercise on sympathovagal balance and tested whether these two factors may interact. ECG was recorded in 28 healthy adults who underwent rest, all-out effort on a cycloergometer, 5 min recovery and again rest. After 3-5 days, WBC (3 min exposure to - 150 °C air) was applied and the whole procedure repeated. Total exercise duration was split into the time needed to reach peak power output (tPEAK) and the time to exhaustion (tEXH). The post-exercise exponential decay of HR was characterized by its delay from exercise cessation (tDELAY) and by its time constant (τOFF). Sympathovagal balance was evaluated by measuring HR variability power in the low (LF) and high (HF) frequency bands, both before exercise and after recovery from it. Sympathetic vs. vagal predominance was assessed by the sympathovagal index LFnu. Paired t-tests indicated that WBC increased tEXH and reduced tDELAY, speeding up the HR recovery. These results suggest that WBC may be exploited to boost exercise performance by about 12-14%. ANOVA on HR variability confirmed that exercise shifted the sympathovagal balance towards sympathetic predominance, but it also highlighted that WBC enhanced vagal drive at rest, both before exercise and after full recovery, covering ~ 70% of the exercise effect.

Participants (n = 49, 26 girls, 10.3 ± 1.8 y) were grouped as 'eutrophic swimming' (EU-Swim, n = 14); 'excess weight swimming' (EW-Swim, n = 20) with an 'obese swimming' subgroup (OB-Swim, n = 10); and 'excess weight sedentary' (EW-Sed, n = 15) with an 'obese sedentary' subgroup (OB-Sed, n = 11). Swimming (50 min, twice/week, moderate-vigorous intensity) was an extra activity during the school year (6 + 3 months with a 3-month school break). Nutritional status, blood pressure (BP), physical activity, cardiorespiratory fitness, biochemical variables, autonomic modulation, endothelial function, abdominal fat, and carotid thickness were assessed at baseline, 6, and 12 months. Greater improvements (p < 0.05) occurred in EW-Swim vs. EW-Sed in body mass index (z-BMI, -16%, d+ 0.52), waist-to-height ratio (W/H, -8%, d+ 0.59-0.79), physical activity (37-53%, d+ 1.8-2.2), cardiorespiratory fitness (30-40%, d+ 0.94-1.41), systolic BP (SBP, -6-8%, d+ 0.88-1.17), diastolic BP (DBP, -9-10%, d+ 0.70-0.85), leptin (-14-18%, d+ 0.29-0.41), forearm blood flow (FBF, 26-41%, d+ 0.53-0.64), subcutaneous fat (SAT, -6%, d+ 0.18), and intra-abdominal fat (VAT, -16%, d+ 0.63). OB-Swim showed improvements vs. OB-Sed in TNFα (-17%, d+ 1.15) and adiponectin (22%, d+ 0.40). Swimming improved fitness and cardiometabolic risk in children/adolescents with overweight/obesity. Abstract
Aims/Hypothesis There is evidence that diabetes is accompanied by a break-down of functional hyperemia, an intrinsic mechanism of neural tissues to adapt blood flow to changing metabolic demands. However, to what extent functional hyperemia is altered in different stages of diabetic retinopathy (DR) in patients with type II diabetes is largely unknown. The current study set out to investigate flicker-induced retinal blood flow changes in patients with type II diabetes at different stages of DR. Materials and methods A total of 76 subjects were included in the present parallel-group study, of which 56 had diabetes with either no DR or different stages of non-proliferative DR (n = 29 no DR, 12 mild DR, 15 moderate to severe DR). In addition, 20 healthy subjects were included as controls. Retinal blood flow was assessed before and during visual stimulation using a combined measurement of retinal vessel calibers and blood velocity by the means of Doppler optical coherence tomography (OCT). To measure systemic autonomic nervous system function, heart rate variability (HRV) was assessed using a short-term orthostatic challenge test. Results In healthy controls, retinal blood flow increased by 40.4 ± 27.2% during flicker stimulation. Flicker responses in patients with DR were significantly decreased depending on the stage of the disease (no DR 37.7 ± 26.0%, mild DR 26.2 ± 28.2%, moderate to severe DR 22.3 ± 13.9%; p = 0.035, ANOVA). When assessing systemic autonomous neural function using HRV, normalized low frequency (LF) spectral power showed a significantly different response to the orthostatic maneuver in diabetic patients compared to healthy controls (p < 0.001). Conclusion/Interpretation Our study indicates that flicker induced hyperemia is reduced in patients with DR compared to healthy subjects. Further, this impairment is more pronounced with increasing severity of DR. Further studies are needed to elucidate mechanisms behind the reduced hyperemic response in patients with type II diabetes. Abstract
Stress is associated with unhealthy habits and non-communicable diseases. It is also linked to communicable diseases due to its impact on immune function. These can be prevented through intervention programs in schools. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of the simplified Pythagorean Self-Awareness Intervention on heart rate variability (HRV) parameters, perceived stress and behaviors of preschool children. The sample of the study consisted of 45 preschool students. A “one group (double) pretest—posttest design” was used, to allow for comparisons of the measurements before and after the intervention. Students were assessed via two questionnaires (“Perceived Stress Scale for Children” (PSS-C) and “Checklist for Screening Behavioral Problems in Preschool Children”) and a photoplethysmographic (PPG) device. The intervention lasted 9 weeks and included practicing of the Pythagorean Self-awareness techniques and the adoption of healthy behaviors. The results showed no statistically significant differences between the two pretests (p > 0.05 for all comparisons) and statistically significant differences between the second pretest and posttest (“Perceived Stress Scale for Children”, (PSS-C) p < 0.0001, “Checklist for Screening Behavioral Problems in Preschool Children” p < 0.0001 and two indices of PPG device: heart rate mean, p < 0.0001, low frequency/very low frequency, p = 0.034). In conclusion, the Pythagorean Self-Awareness Intervention had a beneficial effect on the sample of preschool students examined, as the results showed an improvement in the perceived stress and the HRV parameters tested, and in engaging healthier behaviors, findings that indicate a relaxed psychologic state and a healthier lifestyle.

Abstract
This study aimed to perform a comparative analysis of the horses’ heart rate parameters and locomotor activity in a herd or isolation, with or without the company of goats. Twenty horses were tested in a paddock, accompanied (or not) by three goats. The experiment comprised four tests (a control test of a herd of horses without goats, a horse isolation test without goats, a test of a herd of horses with goats and a test of an isolated horse with goats). The horse’s locomotor behavior, and the HR, RR, rMSSD, LF, HF, and LF/HF were recorded. The data analysis included a 15-min rest, procedural and recovery HR/HRV periods, and a 5-min period at the beginning of the test. The duration of the horses standing in the company of goats increased significantly. The rMSSD parameter was the significantly lowest in the test of a herd of horses with goats. The company of goats in a paddock does not eliminate the emotional effects of the phenomenon. However, the locomotor behavior decreases. Goats in a paddock can provide a positive distraction for horses in a herd as a decrease in emotional excitability can be regarded as having a relaxing impact on a different animal species.

Abstract
Down Syndrome (Ds) is the most common chromosomal cause of intellectual disability that results from triplication of chromosome 21 genes. Individuals with Ds demonstrate cognitive deficits in addition to comorbidities including cardiac defects, pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), low blood pressure (BP), and differences in autonomic regulation. Many individuals with Ds are born with heart malformations and some can be surgically corrected. Lower BP at rest and in response to exercise and other stressors are a prevalent feature in Ds. These reduced cardiovascular responses may be due to underlying autonomic dysfunction and have been implicated in lower exercise/work capacity in Ds, which is an important correlate of morbidity, mortality and quality of life. Exercise therapy can be beneficial to normalize autonomic function and may help prevent the development of co-morbidities in Ds. We will review cardiovascular physiology and pathophysiology in individuals with Ds, along with exercise therapy and special considerations for these individuals.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The human heart rhythm can be quantified by analyzing the heart rate variability (HRV). A major influencing factor of the HRV is the circadian rhythm. The ocular light and the hormone melatonin play decisive roles in the circadian rhythm. The beat rate variability (BRV) is considered to be the in vitro equivalent of the HRV. Previous studies have demonstrated the influence of melatonin on cardiomyocytes. Also, the influence of light on cardiomyocytes has been described before. Nevertheless, the effect of light on the BRV of cardiomyocytes has not yet been examined. MATERIAL AND METHODS The BRV of spontaneously beating cardiomyocytes was measured with microelectrode arrays over a time period of 30 min. The experiments were either performed with light exposure (with and without an infrared filter) or in complete darkness. RESULTS The BRV was higher and the beating frequency was lower when the cardiomyocytes were exposed to the full spectrum of light, compared to the measurements in darkness as well as to the measurements with an infrared filter. In contrast, the differences of BRV between the measurements in darkness and the measurements with an infrared filter were not as distinct. CONCLUSIONS This is the first study demonstrating the influence of light on the beating rhythm of heart tissue in vitro. The results indicate that especially the infrared spectrum of light alters the BRV. These findings could be of interest for clinical applications such as the field of optical pacing as well as in neonatal patient care.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Premature ventricular contractions and supraventricular contractions are common rhythm disorders requiring comprehensive investigation in children. The aim of the study was to evaluate the heart rate variability (HRV) in premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) and supraventricular contractions (PSVCs) in children. METHODS The study compared the characteristics of HRV in 175 children with PVCs and 160 children with PSVCs who underwent 24-h Holter monitoring, with 101 healthy children. RESULTS Significant differences were found between standard deviation of all normal RR intervals (SDNN), standard deviation of average RR intervals in all 5 min segments of registration (SDANN), root mean square of the successive differences (rMSSD), and the proportion of NN50 divided by total number of NNs (pNN50) values of the patient and control groups. The PVCs group had a significantly lower high frequency (HF) and higher low frequency (LF)/HF ratio and the PSVCs group had a significantly higher LF and higher LF/HF ratio compared to the control group. No significant correlation existed between frequency and the SDNN index, rMSSD, and pNN50 values of the PVCs group. The receiver operating characteristics analysis showed a significantly changed LF/HF ratio when premature contractions exceeded 60 beats per hour in children with PVCs. CONCLUSIONS This study indicated an increased sympathetic tone and a significantly decreased vagal tone in children with PVCs and PSVCs. HRV can be used increasingly as a non-invasive method in the follow-up of children with premature cardiac contractions.

Abstract
STUDY DESIGN Cross-sectional study. OBJECTIVES To compare cardiac autonomic modulation of individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI) that practice different amounts of moderate to vigorous physical activity (PA) and able-bodied controls at rest and during a non-immersive Virtual Reality task. SETTING Athletes with SCI of wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis, wheelchair handball, WCMX (wheelchair motocross), and para-swimming were assessed at the Faca na Cadeira Institute, ICEL and Clube Espéria in São Paulo, Brazil; non-athletes with SCI and able-bodied controls were assessed at the Acreditando Centro de Recuperação Neuromotora, São Paulo, Brazil. METHODS One-hundred forty-five individuals were assessed: 36 athletes with traumatic SCI (41.1 ± 16.8 years old), 52 non-athletes with traumatic SCI (40.2 ± 14.1 years old), and 57 able-bodied individuals (39.4 ± 12.5 years old). Cardiac autonomic modulation was assessed through heart rate variability (HRV) measured in the sitting position at rest and during a VR game activity. RESULTS We found significantly more favourable HRV for athletes with SCI when compared to non-athletes with SCI, but no differences between athletes with SCI and able-bodied controls. In addition, athletes and able-bodied controls showed adequate autonomic nervous system (ANS) adaptation (rest versus physical activity in VR), i.e., they experienced parasympathetic withdrawal during VR physical activity, which was not found in non-athletes with SCI. CONCLUSION The practice of moderate to vigorous physical activity is associated with healthier cardiac autonomic modulation in adults with SCI, which may lead to more favourable health outcomes. Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of paced breathing (PB) versus su-soku practice (spontaneous breathing with counting numbers) on autonomic function and brain activity and examine the associations between personality traits, brain activity, and autonomic function. DESIGN A three-way crossover study design. SETTING Thirty healthy Korean participants (15 men: 28.5 ± 4.7 years; 15 women: 27.7 ± 4.8 years) were asked to answer the Korean version of the 125-Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI). Three-way crossover design included normal PB (0.25 Hz), slow PB (0.1 Hz), and su-soku practice. Participants were randomly assigned to one of three groups (group A: su-soku/normal PB/slow PB; group B: normal PB/slow PB/su-soku; group C: slow PB/su-soku/normal PB). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The Korean version of the 125-TCI scores, electroencephalography (EEG), heart rate variability (HRV), and respiratory curve data. RESULTS EEG parameters between normal PB, slow PB, and su-soku showed no significant differences. High frequency and approximate entropy during normal PB and su-soku were higher than those during slow PB. Alpha band power related to well-focused alertness had strong negative correlations with the standard deviation of R-R intervals and square root of the mean of the sum of the squares of differences between adjacent R-R intervals during su-soku practice, while theta band power related to drowsiness had strong positive correlations with very low-frequency power during normal PB. Reflective and analytical individuals tended to be highly focused and alert during su-soku and normal PB, while anxious and unwilling individuals tended to focus on counting in and be drowsier during normal PB. CONCLUSIONS This study's findings suggest that the association between brain activity and autonomic function is affected by meditation type and personality traits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND While difficulties regulating emotions are almost ubiquitous after traumatic brain injury (TBI), remediation techniques are limited. Heart-rate variability (HRV) is a physiological measure of emotion regulation and can be modified using biofeedback training. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the efficacy of repeated biofeedback training for improving emotion regulation difficulties following TBI. DESIGN Fifty adults with severe TBI were allocated to either biofeedback or waitlist conditions. Treatment consisted of six biofeedback sessions whereby participants were taught to breathe at their resonant frequency. Outcomes included changes in physiological and subjective reactivity to anger-induction, emotional well-being, and physiology at rest, together with symptoms of psychological distress and sleep disturbances (ACTRN12618002031246). RESULTS While biofeedback led to reduced skin conductance, it did not affect any other objective or subjective response to the mood induction procedure. Biofeedback led to fewer sleep disturbances, and reduced negative mood valence and depression during follow-up. CONCLUSIONS HRV biofeedback training is a feasible technique following TBI that transfers to improved symptoms of general emotional well-being, psychological distress, and sleep. Biofeedback does not transfer to a laboratory-based emotional provocation task. HRV biofeedback training may represent a novel adjunct for generalized emotional difficulties following injury.

Abstract
Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a gaseous signaling molecule with neuromodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and anti-hypertensive effects. Here, we investigate whether chronic intracerebroventricular (ICV) infusion of sodium hydrosulfide (NaHS), an H2S donor, can alleviate angiotensin II (Ang II)-induced hypertension (HTN), improve autonomic function, and impact microglia in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus, a brain region associated with autonomic control of blood pressure (BP) and neuroinflammation in HTN. Chronic delivery of Ang II (200 ng/kg/min, subcutaneous) for 4 weeks produced a typical increase in BP and sympathetic drive and elevated the number of ionized calcium binding adaptor molecule 1-positive (Iba1+) cells in the PVN of male, Sprague-Dawley rats. ICV co-infusion of NaHS (at 30 and/or 60 nmol/h) significantly attenuated these effects of Ang II. Ang II also increased the abundance of cecal Deltaproteobacteria and Desulfovibrionales, among others, which was prevented by ICV NaHS co-infusion at 30 and 60 nmol/h. We observed no differences in circulating H2S between the groups. Our results suggest that central H2S may alleviate rodent HTN independently from circulating H2S via effects on autonomic nervous system and PVN microglia.

Abstract
This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines to summarize the existing literature on the effects of different exercise interventions on cardiac autonomic control and secondary health factors. Resting heart rate variability (HRV) was used as indicator of cardiac autonomic control. Secondary factors were related to factors that contribute to cardiovascular health. Studies examining the effects of endurance, resistance, multimodal, or coordinative training interventions in healthy participants aged between 45 and 60 years old on average were considered. The methodological quality of the studies was examined using two assessment scales (TESTEX and STARDHRV). PROSPERO registration number: CRD42020206606. The literature review retrieved eight studies fulfilling all inclusion criteria. Cardiac autonomic control and cardiovascular health improved after endurance and multimodal interventions. Resistance training had no significant impact on HRV or any secondary health factor. Coordinative exercise interventions showed inconclusive results regarding HRV but showed significant improvements in secondary health factors. The quality assessment tools revealed some methodological and reporting deficits. Despite the small number of studies, we suggest endurance and multimodal interventions including aerobic exercises for the enhancement of cardiac autonomic control and the reduction of cardiovascular risk in middle-aged adults. Further studies need to be conducted to examine the long-term effects of exercise in the midlife period.

Abstract
Human performance optimization of tactical personnel requires accurate, meticulous, and effective monitoring of biological adaptations and systemic recovery. Due to an increased understanding of its importance and the commercial availability of assessment tools, the use of heart rate variability (HRV) to address this need is becoming more common in the tactical community. Measuring HRV is a non-invasive, practical method for objectively assessing a performer's readiness, workload, and recovery status; when combined with additional data sources and practitioner input, it provides an affordable and scalable solution for gaining actionable information to support the facilitation and maintenance of operational performance. This narrative review discusses the non-clinical use of HRV for assessing, monitoring, and interpreting autonomic nervous system resource availability, modulation, effectiveness, and efficiency in tactical populations. Broadly, HRV metrics represent a complex series of interactions resulting from internal and external stimuli; therefore, a general overview of HRV applications in tactical personnel is discussed, including the influence of occupational specific demands, interactions between cognitive and physical domains, and recommendations on implementing HRV for training and recovery insights into critical health and performance outcomes.

Abstract
PURPOSE Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a recognized adverse effect of standard (neo)adjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancer (BC) treatment. However, there is no consensus on a validated method for assessing CIPN. Heart rate variability (HRV) and vibration perception threshold (VPT) could be used as objective measures to describe CIPN. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate whether subjectively reported CIPN was associated with altered HRV and VPT in BC patients. METHODS We performed a cross-sectional pilot study evaluating 30 BCE patients previously treated with chemotherapy, 26 BCE patients who did not receive chemotherapy, and 22 controls without breast cancer. Self-reported CIPN was registered for the BC patients. All participants were subjected to multi-frequency vibration analyses to determine VPT along with short ECG measurements to determine HRV measures. RESULTS Self-reported CIPN was registered in 14 (46.6%) BC patients treated with chemotherapy. The VPT at 64 Hz (P = 0.022) and mean HR (P = 0.022) were significantly higher and the HRV measures SDNN (P = 0.023), RMSSD (P = 0.007), LF (P = 0.050) and HF (P = 0.045) were significantly lower in BC patients reporting CIPN compared to controls when adjusted for age. VPT at 64 Hz and 125 Hz were significantly higher in BC patients not reporting CIPN compared to controls when adjusted for age. CONCLUSION We found elevated VPT and mean HR along with decreased HRV parameters in 14 BCE patients reporting CIPN. These findings support the need for further investigation into whether HRV and vibration analysis could contribute to an objective assessment of CIPN.

Abstract
Effective emotion regulation contributes to adapting well to challenging situations. One of the proposed cognitive mechanisms underlying emotion regulation is cognitive flexibility in processing of affective material (i.e. affective flexibility). We investigated (n = 118) effects of affective flexibility on the response to a stressor and on spontaneous use of 'adaptive' and 'maladaptive' emotion regulation strategies. Additionally, we examined how emotion regulation influences stress reactivity and recovery. Affective flexibility was measured with a task-switching paradigm in which participants shift attention between affective and non-affective aspects of emotional material. We investigated changes in emotion and heart rate variability to a stress induction. Affective flexibility did not influence the response to stress, but less efficient shifting of attention towards affective aspects of negative information, and more efficient shifting of attention towards non-affective aspects of positive information were related to more use of maladaptive strategies. Emotion regulation strategy use had limited influence on the perceived and actual physiological response to a stress induction, but especially more use of adaptive regulation strategies reduced negative emotional reactivity. Our findings suggest that individual differences in affective flexibility have limited influence on the (acute) response to a stressful event and recovery afterwards, but do influence spontaneous use of emotion regulation strategies.

Abstract
Introduction: Heart rate variability (HRV), the beat-to-beat variation of adjacent heartbeats, is an indicator of the function of the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Increased HRV reflects well-functioning of autonomic control mechanism and cardiovascular health. The aim of this systematic review is to provide a systematic overview of the effects of different physical training modalities on resting HRV and cardiovascular health and risk factors (i.e., baroreflex sensitivity, body fat, body mass, body mass index, blood pressure, heart rate recovery, VO2 max, and VO2 peak) in young and middle-aged (mean age of the studies samples up to 44 years), healthy adults. Methods: A systematic review in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines was performed. Studies investigating the effects of different physical interventions (endurance, resistance, high-intensity, coordinative, or multimodal training) on HRV were included. Trials were considered eligible if the intervention lasted for at least 4 weeks and participants were regarded as general healthy. Five electronic databases were searched from 2005 to September 8th, 2020. The methodological quality of eligible studies was assessed by two study quality and reporting assessment scales (TESTEX and STARDHRV). PROSPERO registration number: CRD42020206606. Results: Of 3,991 retrieved records, 26 were considered eligible and analyzed. Twelve studies used an endurance training (of which three included high-intensity sessions), six studies resistance training, four studies coordinative training, two studies high-intensity training, and two studies used a multimodal intervention. Overall, the results showed for all types of intervention an improvement in linear and non-linear HRV parameters and cardiovascular health and risk factors. However, quality assessment revealed some methodological and reporting deficits. Conclusion: This systematic review highlights the benefits of different types of physical training interventions on autonomic function and health parameters in young and middle-aged, healthy adults. In conclusion, higher training intensities and frequencies are more likely to improve HRV. For future studies, we recommend adhering to the criteria of methodological standards of exercise interventions and HRV measurements and encourage the use of non-linear HRV parameters.

Abstract
The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is involved in cardiovascular and hydroelectrolytic control, being associated with the development of hypertension. The restraint stress (RS) model is an aversive situation, which promotes a sustained increase in blood pressure and heart rate, and stimulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Stress leads to an increase of angiotensin-II contents both in the circulation and the central nervous system (CNS), as well as an increased expression of AT-1 receptors in CNS structures related to stress. Stressful stimuli are associated with the modulation of autonomic nervous system, as well as baroreflex; changes in this adjustment mechanism are related to cardiovascular diseases. We hypothesized that RAS is involved in the modulation of autonomic, neuroendocrine, and functional RS-caused alterations. The intravenous (i.v) pretreatment of rats with lisinopril, an angiotensin-converting-enzyme inhibitor, reduced the RS-evoked pressor response. The doses of 0.1 and 0.3 mg/kg also reduced the RS-evoked tachycardia, while in the dose of 1 mg/kg of lisinopril potentiated the tachycardic one. Additionally, i.v. pretreatment with losartan, a selective AT-1 receptor antagonist, reduced the pressor and the tachycardic responses caused by RS. Pretreatment with lisinopril 0.3 mg/kg increased the power of the low frequency (LF) band of the systolic BP spectrum after the treatment without affecting this parameter during RS. The pretreatment with losartan 1 mg/kg increased the power of the high frequency (HF) band and reduced the LF (n.u.) and the LF/HF ratio of the pulse interval spectrum in the first hour of RS. Concerning baroreflex sensitiveness (SBR), pretreatments with losartan or lisinopril did not affect the gain of the baroreflex sequences. However, the pretreatment with losartan reduced the baroreflex effectiveness index of the total sequences in the third hour of the RS. These results indicate that Ang-II, via the AT-1 receptor, plays a facilitating influence on the cardiovascular response caused by RS; facilitates sympathetic activation and reduces parasympathetic activity related to RS; facilitates the baroreflex activation during RS and favors corticosterone release under this stress model. The impairment of Ang-II synthesis, as well as the blockade of AT-1 receptors, may constitute an important pharmacological strategy to treat cardiovascular consequences caused by stress.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Heart rate variability (HRV) is a main determinant of autonomic function and related to the development of hypertension and cardiovascular (CV) disease. Hypertension develops in black populations at an earlier age, which could be due to differences in the autonomic nervous system activity and sodium/potassium handling in black and white populations. We investigated whether HRV is associated with 24 h urinary sodium and potassium excretion and blood pressure (BP) in a young bi-ethnic cohort. METHODS AND RESULTS We examined 423 black and 483 white healthy adults (aged 24.5 ± 3.1 years) for 24 h HRV, including standard deviation of normal RR intervals (SDNN) reflecting autonomic variations over time, and root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) reflecting parasympathetic activity. We measured 24 h urinary sodium and potassium concentration and BP. The black group had lower SDNN and potassium excretion as well as higher RMSSD, sodium and Na/k ratio compared to the white group (all p < 0.05). Only in black individuals, urinary potassium excretion was independently and negatively associated with SDNN (β[95% CI];-0.26[-0.50;-0.02]ms) and RMSSD (-0.14[-0.27;-0.01]ms, p < 0.05). One unit increase in sodium/potassium (Na/K) ratio was associated with higher SDNN (β[95% CI]; 3.04[0.89; 5.19]ms) and RMSSD (1.60[0.41; 2.78]ms) in the black cohort only (both p < 0.001). In both groups elevated 24 h diastolic BP was associated with lower RMSSD (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION Lower potassium excretion and higher Na/K ratio related independently to higher HRV in young and healthy black adults. A better ethnic-specific understanding of sodium and potassium handling is required as part of preventive cardiology, especially in black individuals.
