Abstract
Background: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation for treatment-resistant obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). We aim to compare the treatment outcomes of a newly developed dual-site cathodal tDCS method over the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA) and two previously reported montages (cerebellum-OFC and pre-SMA) in patients with treatment-resistant OCD. Methods: Eighteen OCD patients were randomly assigned to receive twice-daily 2 mA/20 min sessions for 10 consecutive weekdays, with the active cathode placed on the cerebellum-OFC, bilateral pre-SMA, or OFC-pre-SMA tDCS. The primary outcome was the change in the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS). The resting electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded to obtain the default mode network (DMN) via low-resolution electromagnetic tomography. Each patient received one-week and one-month follow-ups after two weeks of stimulation. Results: At the end of the stimulation, the Y-BOCS scores in the cerebellum-OFC, pre-SMA, and OFC-pre-SMA tDCS groups (n = 6 in each group) were decreased by 14.15 ± 13.31, 7.4 ± 9.59, and 20.75 ± 8.70%, respectively, but no significant differences were found among the groups. In the OFC-pre-SMA tDCS group, OC symptoms significantly decreased by a mean of -20.75% immediately after the 20th tDCS session, and the improvement remained at 1 week and 1 month after tDCS. EEG source functional connectivity analyses revealed increased functional connectivity within the frontal network after OFC-pre-SMA tDCS, whereas decreased functional connectivity within the DMN was observed after cerebellum-OFC tDCS. Conclusions: Dual-site cathodal tDCS over the OFC and pre-SMA might be considered a potential montage to treat patients with treatment-resistant OCD. Future studies using randomized sham-controlled designs are needed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Cognitive functions are a crucial part of daily living, especially for adults with Down syndrome (DS) who have a high likelihood of developing Alzheimer's disease in adulthood. In addition, adults with DS move slower and are not meeting the standard aerobic activity guidelines each week. The aim of this study was to examine if Assisted Cycle Therapy (ACT) would improve cognitive planning as measured by the Tower of London (TOL), set switching as measured by the modified Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, and spatial memory as measured by the Corsi Block Test in adults with DS as compared to self-paced cycling. METHODS Twenty-four participants were randomly assigned to one of two interventions over eight weeks. (1) Thirteen older adults with DS completed the ACT intervention, which is stationary cycling with the assistance of a motor to maintain a cadence at least 35% greater than voluntary cycling. (2) Eleven older adults with DS completed voluntary cycling (VC). RESULTS Our results showed that cognitive planning as measured by total correct score in the TOL showed improvement for both ACT and VC after 8 weeks of exercise, F(1, 22) = 6.22, p = 0.021. There were no significant differences for spatial memory or set switching. CONCLUSIONS We concluded that cycling exercise has a positive impact on cognitive function, especially problem solving in older adults with DS. Our results are discussed with respect to upregulation of neurotrophic factors that increase functioning in the prefrontal cortex that accompanies exercise and leads to improvements in cognitive planning which is essential to many activities of daily living and quality of life for older adults with DS.

Abstract
(1) Background: Persistent postural-perceptual dizziness (PPPD) is a common chronic dizziness disorder with an unclear pathophysiology. It is hypothesized that PPPD may involve disrupted spatial cognition processes as a core feature. (2) Methods: A cohort of 19 PPPD patients underwent psycho-cognitive testing, including assessments for anxiety, depression, memory, attention, planning, and executive functions, with an emphasis on spatial navigation via a virtual Morris water maze. These patients were compared with 12 healthy controls and 20 individuals with other vestibular disorders but without PPPD. Vestibular function was evaluated using video head impulse testing and vestibular evoked myogenic potentials, while brain magnetic resonance imaging was used to exclude confounding pathology. (3) Results: PPPD patients demonstrated unique impairments in allocentric spatial navigation (as evidenced by the virtual Morris water maze) and in other high-demand visuospatial cognitive tasks that involve executive functions and planning, such as the Towers of London and Trail Making B tests. A factor analysis highlighted spatial navigation and advanced visuospatial functions as being central to PPPD, with a strong correlation to symptom severity. (4) Conclusions: PPPD may broadly impair higher cognitive functions, especially in spatial cognition. We discuss a disruption in the creation of enriched cognitive spatial maps as a possible pathophysiology for PPPD.

Abstract
Down syndrome (DS) is one of the most common chromosomal disorders. In addition to this variety of dysmorphic features. DS is also associated with a wide range of diseases and related comorbidities affecting different organs and systems. These comorbidities, together with societal and environmental influences, have a negative impact on physical activity in people with DS. Low levels of physical activity and energy expenditure have been identified as crucial players in worsening the acquisition of motor skills and executive functions. Executive functions are critical for the many skills (creativity, flexibility, self-control, and discipline) impacting our quality of life and make it possible to control impulses, mentally play with ideas, and stay focused. We proposed a broad overview of the available literature regarding motor skills and executive functions in pediatric patients with DS to understand the specific challenges for tailoring physical activity interventions. Motor skill interventions are effective in improving motor competence and performance on cognitive, emotional, and physical aspects in children with DS. Interventions based on executive functions in DS subjects are effective to contrast the cognitive decline and improve the everyday use of executive functions in youth and adults. Targeted interventions are mandatory for maximizing the benefits of physical activity, minimizing potential risks, and ultimately improving the overall health outcomes and quality of life for individuals with DS.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Attentional dysfunction has long been viewed as one of the fundamental underlying cognitive deficits in schizophrenia. There is an urgent need to understand its neural underpinning and develop effective treatments. In the process of attention, neural oscillation has a central role in filtering information and allocating resources to either stimulus-driven or goal-relevant objects. Here, we asked if resting-state EEG connectivity correlated with attentional performance in schizophrenia patients. Materials and Methods: Resting-state EEG recordings were obtained from 72 stabilized patients with schizophrenia. Lagged phase synchronization (LPS) was used to measure whole-brain source-based functional connectivity between 84 intra-cortical current sources determined by eLORETA (exact low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography) for five frequencies. The Conners' Continuous Performance Test-II (CPT-II) was administered for evaluating attentional performance. Linear regression with a non-parametric permutation randomization procedure was used to examine the correlations between the whole-brain functional connectivity and the CPT-II measures. Results: Greater beta-band right hemispheric fusiform gyrus (FG)-lingual gyrus (LG) functional connectivity predicted higher CPT-II variability scores (r = 0.44, p < 0.05, corrected), accounting for 19.5% of variance in the CPT-II VAR score. Greater gamma-band right hemispheric functional connectivity between the cuneus (Cu) and transverse temporal gyrus (TTG) and between Cu and the superior temporal gyrus (STG) predicted higher CPT-II hit reaction time (HRT) scores (both r = 0.50, p < 0.05, corrected), accounting for 24.6% and 25.1% of variance in the CPT-II HRT score, respectively. Greater gamma-band right hemispheric Cu-TTG functional connectivity predicted higher CPT-II HRT standard error (HRTSE) scores (r = 0.54, p < 0.05, corrected), accounting for 28.7% of variance in the CPT-II HRTSE score. Conclusions: Our study indicated that increased right hemispheric resting-state EEG functional connectivity at high frequencies was correlated with poorer focused attention in schizophrenia patients. If replicated, novel approaches to modulate these networks may yield selective, potent interventions for improving attention deficits in schizophrenia.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to adapt and validate the global deterioration scale (GDS) for the systematic tracking of Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression in a population with Down syndrome (DS). A retrospective dual-center cohort study was conducted with 83 participants with DS (46.65 ± 5.08 years) who formed the primary diagnosis (PD) group: cognitive stability (n = 48), mild cognitive impairment (n = 24), and Alzheimer's disease (n = 11). The proposed scale for adults with DS (GDS-DS) comprises six stages, from cognitive and/or behavioral stability to advanced AD. Two neuropsychologists placed the participants of the PD group in each stage of the GDS-DS according to cognitive, behavioral and daily living skills data. Inter-rater reliability in staging with the GDS-DS was excellent (ICC = 0.86; CI: 0.80-0.93), and the agreement with the diagnosis categories of the PD group ranged from substantial to excellent with κ values of 0.82 (95% CI: 0.73-0.92) and 0.85 (95% CI: 0.72, 0.99). Performance with regard to the CAMCOG-DS total score and orientation subtest of the Barcelona test for intellectual disability showed a slight progressive decline across all the GDS-DS stages. The GDS-DS scale is a sensitive tool for staging the progression of AD in the DS population, with special relevance in daily clinical practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exercise has the potential to reduce cognitive decline in people with Down syndrome by maximising their cognitive function. The aim of the study was to determine the effect of regular exercise on cognitive functioning in young people with Down syndrome. METHOD People with Down syndrome were eligible if aged between 13 and 35 years and enrolled to participate in an exercise programme (called FitSkills). The intervention was a 12-week community-based exercise programme completed with a student mentor. Outcomes were assessed before (week 0) and immediately after (week 13) the intervention. Executive functioning (planning, response inhibition, attention shifting) was assessed using Tower of London, Sustained Attention to Response Task, CANTAB Intra-extra Dimensional Set Shift Test, Cognitive Scale for Down Syndrome, and Behaviour Rating Inventory of Executive Function (BRIEF). Working memory was assessed using the CANTAB Paired Associates Learning task, and information processing speed was assessed using the Motor Screening Task. Outcomes were analysed using ANCOVA with the baseline measure as the covariate. RESULTS Twenty participants (9 women; mean age 23.6 ± 6.6 years) enrolled. Between-group differences, in favour of the experimental group, were found for the global executive composite score of the BRIEF (mean difference -4.77 units, 95% CI -9.30 to -0.25). There were no between group differences for any other outcome measured. CONCLUSION Participation in a 12-week exercise programme was effective in improving everyday executive functions in young people with Down syndrome. These preliminary findings need to be confirmed in future randomised controlled trials of community-based exercise with larger sample sizes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite presenting higher risk of dementia, mild cognitive impairment (MCI) is not well defined in Down syndrome population. OBJECTIVE We aimed to describe cognitive and neuropsychological patterns associated with MCI in Down syndrome individuals. METHOD Two groups of adults with Down syndrome (control and prodromal) were studied throughout 3 years. Two linear mixed models and a model including the variables that best predicted group membership were built. RESULTS Behavioural Regulation Index (BRI) (Behaviour Rating Inventory of Executive Function test) and the model composed of BRI, abstraction and delayed verbal memory were the variable and model best predicting group membership, respectively. CONCLUSION Suggest a diagnosis of MCI when BRI is the earliest change perceived by caregivers and this is combined with low scores in abstract thinking, and when an amnesic pattern in delayed verbal memory is observed, but adaptive skills are preserved.

Abstract
Introduction: The majority of individuals with Down syndrome (DS) show signs of Alzheimer's disease (AD) neuropathology in their fourth decade. However, there is a lack of specific markers for characterizing the disease stages while considering this population's differential features. Methods: Forty-one DS individuals participated in the study, and were classified into three groups according to their clinical status: Alzheimer's disease (AD-DS), mild cognitive impairment (MCI-DS), and controls (CN-DS). We performed an exhaustive neuropsychological evaluation and assessed brain functional connectivity (FC) from magnetoencephalographic recordings. Results: Compared with CN-DS, both MCI-DS and AD-DS showed a pattern of increased FC within the high alpha band. The neuropsychological assessment showed a generalized cognitive impairment, especially affecting mnestic functions, in MCI-DS and, more pronouncedly, in AD-DS. Discussion: These findings might help to characterize the AD-continuum in DS. In addition, they support the role of the excitatory/inhibitory imbalance as a key pathophysiological factor in AD. Impact statement The pattern of functional connectivity (FC) hypersynchronization found in this study resembles the largely reported Alzheimer's disease (AD) FC evolution pattern in population with typical development. This study supports the hypothesis of the excitatory/inhibitory imbalance as a key pathophysiological factor in AD, and its conclusions could help in the characterization and prediction of Down syndrome individuals with a greater likelihood of converting to dementia.

Abstract
The influence of exercise on brain function is an important topic, especially in persons with intellectual deficits. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of an acute bout of resistance training (RT) compared to assisted cycle therapy (ACT) and no training (NT) in adults with DS on cognitive function. Fourteen participants attended four sessions: a baseline assessment, an assisted cycling therapy (ACT) session, a resistance training (RT) session, and a session of no training (NT). In the RT session, the leg press, chest press, seated row, leg curl, shoulder press, and latissimus pulldown were performed. The ACT session consisted of 30 min of cycling and in NT session consisted of 20 min of board games. Inhibition was measured by the Erikson flanker task and cognitive planning was measured by the Tower of London test and both were administered prior to (pretest) and after each intervention (posttest). Our results showed that inhibition time improved more following RT and ACT than NT. There was also a significant difference between ACT and NT. For cognitive planning, improvements were seen following ACT and NT. In conclusion, an acute session of ACT demonstrated a significant trend towards improvements in executive functions in adults with DS which we interpreted using a model of neural changes and the cognitive stimulation hypothesis.

Abstract
Zusammenfassung. Infolge der Corona-Pandemie 2019 und den damit einhergehenden Restriktionen verloren Menschen mit einer intellektuellen Beeinträchtigung – wie andere auch – ihre Praktikumsplätze oder wurden in das Szenario „Arbeit zu Hause“ geschickt. In einer für den ersten Lockdown konzipierten 3-wöchigen Pilotstudie zur Untersuchung einer mobilen Applikation zur Handlungsplanung kochten drei Teilnehmer*innen mit exekutiver Dysfunktion – und daraus resultierenden Schwierigkeiten in der Handlungsplanung – begleitet von Jobcoaches mithilfe der RehaGoal App. Zur Erfassung der Usability dieser App wurde ein teilstandardisierter Fragebogen von den Teilnehmer*innen und ihren Angehörigen beantwortet. Es zeigte sich, dass die Teilnehmer*innen die RehaGoal App gut einsetzen konnten und sich sicher in der Benutzung fühlten. Zudem gaben die Angehörigen an, sich vorstellen zu können, die App für weitere häusliche Aufgaben zu nutzen.

Abstract
Background and Aims: Screening and assessment of cognitive changes in adults with Intellectual Disabilities (ID), mainly Down Syndrome (DS), is crucial to offer appropriate services to their needs. We present a systematic review of the existing instruments assessing dementia, aiming to support researchers and clinicians’ best practice. Methods: Searches were carried out in the databases Web of Science; PubMed; PsycINFO in March 2019 and updated in October 2020. Studies were selected and examined if they: (1) focused on assessing age-related cognitive changes in persons with ID; (2) included adults and/or older adults; (3) included scales and batteries for cognitive assessment. Results: Forty-eight cross-sectional studies and twenty-seven longitudinal studies were selected representing a total sample of 6451 participants (4650 DS and 1801 with other ID). In those studies, we found 39 scales, questionnaires, and inventories, and 13 batteries for assessing cognitive and behavioural changes in adults with DS and other ID. Conclusion: The most used instrument completed by an informant or carer was the Dementia Questionnaire for Learning Disabilities (DLD), and its previous versions. We discuss the strengths and limitations of the instruments and outline recommendations for future use.

Abstract
Varying degrees of impaired clinical insight in schizophrenia differentially impact medication adherence and clinical outcomes, prompting in-depth investigations of the deficits. Research is scarce on the differences in peripheral physiological markers between varying degrees of impaired insight. The aims of this study were to examine the differences in (1) resting-state high-frequency heart rate variability (HF-HRV) and (2) crucial clinical outcomes between schizophrenia patients with varying degrees of insight impairment as measured by the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) item G12 (lack of judgment and insight). The study recruited a sample of 95 stabilized schizophrenia patients with insight impairment. Patients were divided into 2 groups of either minimal insight impairment (n = 25, PANSS G12 = 2-3) or moderate-to-severe insight impairment (n = 70, PANSS G12 ≥ 4). Patients with moderate-to-severe insight impairment displayed lower HF-HRV, clinician-rated psychosocial function, medication adherence, and working memory capacity, and higher self-reported psychosocial function and life quality, but comparable cognitive insight compared to those with minimal insight impairment. A logistic regression model predicted moderate-to-severe insight impairment based on HF-HRV values at the optimal cut-off point of 3.655, with the sensitivity and specificity 84% and 72%, respectively. HF-HRV seems a peripheral marker sensitively reflecting central pathophysiology implicated in insight impairment of schizophrenia.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION This pilot study analyzes the effect of a cognitive training program in adults with intellectual disability (ID). METHOD Twenty subjects (mean age 52.7 ± 9.77 years) with mild and moderate ID were divided in control and experimental group. Only the experimental group received the training program. This program was applied through the GNPT® (Guttmann, NeuroPersonalTrainer®) platform for people with ID. RESULTS The results revealed a significant improvement in the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test-2 scores (Matrices subtest) in the experimental group [Z = 2.12; p = .03] after the intervention, indicating an enhancement in fluid ability due to effect of cognitive training program. CONCLUSION Findings provide evidence of the importance of applying these programs in a systematized way in adults with ID.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The literature on planning ability in individuals with intellectual disability (ID) provides no clarity on whether their ability matches their mental age (MA) or not. Perhaps can planning experience explain the mixed results. The current study investigated to what extent cognitive abilities and life experience can explain everyday planning ability in individuals with ID and to what extent results from everyday planning tasks support the developmental or the difference model of ID. METHOD Planning tests, cognitive ability tasks and a self-rated life experience form were administered to 71 adolescents with ID and 62 children with a typical development matched on MA. RESULTS Adolescents with ID exhibited planning ability according to their MA. Regression analyses showed that the predictors of planning differed between the groups. The cognitive measures could predict planning in both groups, but life experience only contributed positively to planning in the MA group, whereas chronological age was negatively correlated with successful planning in the ID group. CONCLUSIONS AND DISCUSSION The results support the difference model of ID. When matched on MA, the individuals with ID will solve the planning task in a qualitatively different manner. Additionally, the participants with ID could not utilise their life experience when solving the planning task, contrary to the MA group. Practitioners should be aware that individuals with ID might need more everyday planning training throughout adolescence. To support adolescents with ID, practitioners may focus on supporting the individual's cognitive abilities rather than relying on their prior knowledge.

Abstract
BACKGROUND We evaluated Gamalate® B6 (GB6) in patients with borderline intellectual functioning (BIF) or mild intellectual development disability (IDD). PATIENTS AND METHODS This was a prospective phase IV observational pilot study in 30 patients who underwent neuropsychological evaluation during treatment with GB6 for 12 weeks. RESULTS In comparison with baseline, the responses were positive, with a significant improvement in hyperactivity (51.7%), irritability (35.5%), and logorrhea (50%), and no sedative effect. The Clinical Global Impressions - Severity (CGI-S) score was much improved or very much improved in 73% of cases. Reaction time was better with fewer errors, thus indicating an improvement in attentional processes. A statistically significant result was obtained for the number of movements used to solve the problem and for the total number of correctly solved problems. CONCLUSION In this pilot study, GB6 was effective and well tolerated in cases of ADHD and challenging behavior in young adults with borderline-to-mild BIF/IDD. However, given the small number of patients involved and the uncontrolled nature of the study, these results should be viewed cautiously.

Abstract
No studies have examined the efficacy of bi-anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) over bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) coupled with bilateral extracephalic references in treating negative symptoms of non-acute schizophrenia patients. This study aimed to investigate the therapeutic effects of the new approach of tDCS on negative symptoms, other schizophrenia symptoms, cognitive deficits and psychosocial functioning in a double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled trial. Patients with non-acute schizophrenia (N = 60) in randomized order received sham treatment or bilaterally provided tDCS (2 mA, twice-daily sessions for five consecutive days) with the anode over the DLPFC and the reference (cathode) over the ipsilateral forearm. The negative symptoms as measured by a dimensional approach of Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS) were rapidly reduced by bimodal tDCS relative to sham stimulation (F = 24.86, Cohen's d = 0.661, p = 6.11 × 10-6). The beneficial effect on negative symptoms lasted for up to 3 months. The authors also observed improvement with tDCS of psychosocial functioning as measured by the global score of Personal and Social Performance scale (PSP) and psychopathological symptoms especially for disorganization and cognitive symptoms as measured by the PANSS. No effects were observed on other schizophrenia symptom dimensions and the performance on a series of neurocognitive tests. Our results show promise for bi-anodal tDCS over bilateral DLPFC using bilateral extracephalic references in treating negative symptoms and other selected manifestations of schizophrenia. Further studies with electrophysiological or imaging evaluation help unravel the exact mechanism of action of this novel stimulation parameter of tDCS in schizophrenia patients. Abstract
Down syndrome (DS) has been considered a unique model for the investigation of Alzheimer's disease (AD) but intermediate stages in the continuum are poorly defined. Considering this, we investigated the neurophysiological (i.e., magnetoencephalography [MEG]) and neuropsychological patterns of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and AD in middle-aged adults with DS. The sample was composed of four groups: Control-DS (n = 14, mean age 44.64 ± 3.30 years), MCI-DS (n = 14, 51.64 ± 3.95 years), AD-DS (n = 13, 53.54 ± 6.58 years), and Control-no-DS (healthy controls, n = 14, 45.21 ± 4.39 years). DS individuals were studied with neuropsychological tests and MEG, whereas the Control-no-DS group completed only the MEG session. Our results showed that the AD-DS group exhibited a significantly poorer performance as compared with the Control-DS group in all tests. Furthermore, this effect was crucially evident in AD-DS individuals when compared with the MCI-DS group in verbal and working memory abilities. In the neurophysiological domain, the Control-DS group showed a widespread increase of theta activity when compared with the Control-no-DS group. With disease progression, this increased theta was substituted by an augmented delta, accompanied with a reduction of alpha activity. Such spectral pattern-specifically observed in occipital, posterior temporal, cuneus, and precuneus regions-correlated with the performance in cognitive tests. This is the first MEG study in the field incorporating both neuropsychological and neurophysiological information, and demonstrating that this combination of markers is sensitive enough to characterize different stages along the AD continuum in DS.

Abstract
No studies have examined the effects of fronto-temporal transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) on cognitive insight and neurocognitive function in schizophrenia patients and the dynamic interplay between tDCS-induced changes in these two outcomes. In this double-blind, randomized, sham-controlled study, we investigated the effects of fronto-temporal tDCS [anode corresponding to left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and cathode to left temporo-parietal junction; 2-mA, twice-daily sessions for 5 days] on illness severity, psychosocial functioning, cognitive insight and neurocognitive function in schizophrenia patients (N = 60). The authors observed significant trends that tDCS ameliorated the severity of total and general psychopathology as measured by the Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale. No significant effects were observed for other psychopathological symptoms and psychosocial functioning. Cognitive insight as measured by the Beck Cognitive Insight Scale (BCIS) was rapidly enhanced by 10-session tDCS (F = 10.80, Cohen's d = 0.44, p = 0.002) but the beneficial effect became borderline significant 1 month after stimulation. A trend-level improvement with tDCS of planning ability (F = 6.40, Cohen's d = 0.339, p = 0.014) as measured by the accuracy in Tower of London task was also observed. In the active tDCS group, the change in cognitive insight from baseline to immediately after tDCS assessment was positively correlated with that in planning ability (r = 0.46, p = 0.015), which was independent of the corresponding change in illness severity. The promising results regarding the fast-acting beneficial effects of tDCS on cognitive insight and planning ability in schizophrenia require confirmation in future replication studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Individuals with Down syndrome generally show a floor effect on Wechsler Scales that is manifested by flat profiles and with many or all of the weighted scores on the subtests equal to 1. METHOD The main aim of the present paper is to use the statistical Hessl method and the extended statistical method of Orsini, Pezzuti and Hulbert with a sample of individuals with Down syndrome (n = 128; 72 boys and 56 girls), to underline the variability of performance on Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition subtests and indices, highlighting any strengths and weaknesses of this population that otherwise appear to be flattened. RESULTS Based on results using traditional transformation of raw scores into weighted scores, a very high percentage of subtests with weighted score of 1 occurred in the Down syndrome sample, with a floor effect and without any statistically significant difference between four core Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Fourth Edition indices. The results, using traditional transformation, confirm a deep cognitive impairment of those with Down syndrome. Conversely, using the new statistical method, it is immediately apparent that the variability of the scores, both on subtests and indices, is wider with respect to the traditional method. CONCLUSION Children with Down syndrome show a greater ability in the Verbal Comprehension Index than in the Working Memory Index.
