Pesticides and Pesticide Degradates in Groundwater Used for Public Supply across the United States: Occurrence and Human-Health Context

Analysing agricultural plant protection product concentrations in groundwater in Germany: Nationwide database with site and compound insights

Pesticides from agricultural practices are among the most pressing reasons why groundwater sources do not reach the good chemical status standards as required by the European Water Framework directive. Complementary to previous federal pesticide reports, we analysed groundwater-monitoring data from 13 German Länder assembled in a database consisting of 26.192 groundwater measuring sites sampled between 1973 and 2021 of in total 521 parent compounds and metabolites. This study focuses on agricultural plant protection products. The monitored substance spectrum and site density developed over time and differs between Länder. More than 95 % of all samples lie below the respective (multiple) limits of quantification (LOQ). We thus report the frequency of exceedance above concentration thresholds, which allows to compare measurements temporally and spatially. Pesticide detections were found in all aquifer types, land uses and well screen depths. Most detections of higher concentrations were found in agricultural areas, at shallow screen depth in porous aquifers. Karst aquifers showed also a higher percentage of samples in higher concentration classes. Metabolites with high mobility and persistence were found in higher concentration ranges. Herbicides and metabolites thereof dominate the top 20 of pesticides that most frequently exceed 0.1 μg L-1. The ranking for 2010-2019 includes both authorised and banned compounds and their occurrence is discussed in the context of their mobility, persistence and underlying monitoring density. Yearly exceedance frequencies above 0.05, 0.1 μg L-1 and higher thresholds of metazachlor and its esa-metabolite, and national sales data of the parent compound did not show a temporal correlation in subsequent years. This study stresses the need for the harmonisation of heterogeneous pesticide data. Further, a characterisation of the groundwater data used to analyse pesticide occurrence in selected concentration ranges for relevant site factors and compound properties and provides a pesticide ranking based on exceedance frequencies is provided.

Removal of multiple pesticides from water by different types of membranes

Pesticides are used in agriculture to protect crops from pathogens, insects, fungi and weeds, but the release of pesticides into surface/groundwater by agriculture runoff and rain has raised serious concerns not only for the environment but also for human health. This study aimed to investigate the impact of surface properties on the performance of seven distinct membrane types utilized in nanofiltration (NF), reverse osmosis (RO) and forward osmosis (FO) processes in eliminating multiple pesticides from spiked water. Out of the membranes tested, two are self-fabricated RO membranes while the rest are commercially available membranes. Our results revealed that the self-fabricated RO membranes performed better than other commercial membranes (e.g., SW30XLE, NF270, Duracid and FO) in rejecting the targeted pesticides by achieving at least 99% rejections regardless of the size of pesticides and their log Kow value. Despite the marginally lower water flux exhibited by the self-fabricated membrane compared to the commercial BW30 membrane, its exceptional ability to reject both mono- and divalent salts renders it more apt for treating water sources containing not only pesticides but also various dissolved ions. The enhanced performance of the self-fabricated RO membrane is mainly attributed to the presence of a hydrophilic interlayer (between the polyamide layer and substrate) and the incorporation of hydrophilic nanosheets in tuning its surface characteristics. The findings of the work provide insight into the importance of membrane surface modification for the application of not only the desalination process but also for the removal of contaminants of emerging concern.

Occurrence and Ecological Risk of Alkylamine Triazines in Chinese Estuarine Sediments: An Emerging Class of Persistent, Mobile, and Toxic Substances

Identifying persistent, mobile, and toxic (PMT) substances from synthetic chemicals is critical for chemical management and ecological risk assessment. Inspired by the triazine analogues (e.g., atrazine and melamine) in the original European Union's list of PMT substances, the occurrence and compositions of alkylamine triazines (AATs) in the estuarine sediments of main rivers along the eastern coast of China were comprehensively explored by an integrated strategy of target, suspect, and nontarget screening analysis. A total of 44 AATs were identified, of which 23 were confirmed by comparison with authentic standards. Among the remaining tentatively identified analogues, 18 were emerging pollutants not previously reported in the environment. Tri- and di-AATs were the dominant analogues, and varied geographic distributions of AATs were apparent in the investigated regions. Toxic unit calculations indicated that there were acute and chronic risks to algae from AATs on a large geographical scale, with the antifouling biocide cybutryne as a key driver. The assessment of physicochemical properties further revealed that more than half of the AATs could be categorized as potential PMT and very persistent and very mobile substances at the screening level. These results highlight that AATs are a class of PMT substances posing high ecological impacts on the aquatic environment and therefore require more attention.

The role of membrane transporters in the absorption of atrazine following nasal exposure

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of these studies was to investigate the uptake of atrazine across the nasal mucosa to determine whether direct transport to the brain through the olfactory epithelium is likely to occur. These studies were undertaken to provide important new information about the potential for the enhanced neurotoxicity of herbicides following nasal inhalation.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Transport of atrazine from aqueous solution and from commercial atrazine-containing herbicide products was assessed using excised nasal mucosal tissues. The permeation rate and the role of membrane transporters in the uptake of atrazine across the nasal mucosa were also investigated. Histological examination of the nasal tissues was conducted to assess the effects of commercial atrazine-containing products on nasal tissue morphology.

RESULTS

Atrazine showed high flux across both nasal respiratory and olfactory tissues, and efflux transporters were found to play an essential role in limiting its uptake at low exposure concentrations. Commercial atrazine-containing herbicide products showed remarkably high transfer across the nasal tissues, and histological evaluation showed significant changes in the morphology of the nasal epithelium following exposure to the herbicide products.

DISCUSSION

Lipophilic herbicides such as atrazine can freely permeate across the nasal mucosa despite the activity of efflux transporters. The adjuvant compounds in commercial herbicide products disrupt the nasal mucosa's epithelial barrier, resulting in even greater atrazine permeation across the tissues. The properties of the herbicide itself and those of the formulated products play crucial roles in the potential for the enhanced neurotoxicity of herbicides following nasal inhalation.

Occurrence, distribution and ecological risk assessment of herbicide residues in cropland soils from the Mollisols region of Northeast China

The first systematic and comprehensive investigation of herbicide residues was conducted by identifying their spatial distribution, influencing factors and ecological risk in cropland soils from the Mollisols region covering 109 million hm2 in Northeast China. Fifty-six herbicides were detected with total herbicide concentrations ranging from 1.01 to 1558.13 μg/kg (mean: 227.45). Atrazine, its degradates deethyl atrazine (DEA) and deisopropyl atrazine (DIA), trifluralin and butachlor were the most frequently detected herbicides, while DEA, clomazone, nicosulfuron, fomesafen, and mefenacet exhibited the highest concentrations. Despite being less frequently reported in Chinese soils, fomesafen, nicosulfuron, clomazone, and mefenacet were found widely present. Although most of the compounds posed a minimal or low ecological risk, atrazine, nicosulfuron and DEA exhibited medium to high potential risks. The key factors identified to regulate the fate of herbicides were soil chemical properties, amount of herbicides application, and the crop type. The soybean soils showed highest herbicide residues, while the soil mineral contents likely adsorbed more herbicides. This study provides a valuable large-scale dataset of herbicide residues across the entire Mollisols region of China along with fine-scale characterization of the ecological risks. Mitigation and management measures are needed to reduce the herbicide inputs and residues in the region.

The non-edible and disposable parts of oyster mushroom, as novel adsorbent for quantitative removal of atrazine and its degradation products from synthetic wastewater

In this study, the non-edible part of oyster mushroom was utilized for quantitative removal of the most commonly used s-triazine herbicide; atrazine and its breakdown products including deethylatrazine (DEA), hydroxyatrazine (ATOH) and deisopropylatrazine (DIA) from aqueous samples. The functional groups available on the oyster mushroom were studied applying FTIR before and after adsorption. Experimental parameters influencing the uptake process including acidity, sorbent mass, sorption time, initial analyte quantities, and agitation speed were analysed and the maximum removal was found at 4, 0.3 g, 120 min, 0.5 mg L-1, and 150 rpm, respectively. Accordingly, the adsorption capacities of 0.994, 1.113, 0.991 and 1.016 mg g-1 were obtained for DIA, DEA, ATOH and atrazine, respectively. The adsorption characteristics were discussed utilizing Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The fundamental characteristic of the Langmuir isotherm, which can be elaborated using separation factor or equilibrium parameter, RL, and coefficient of variation, R2, were (0.761, 0.996), (0.884, 0.975), (0.908, 0.983) and (0.799, 0.984) for DIA, DEA, ATOH and Atrazine, respectively. These findings showed that all analytes' adsorption processes were fitted well to the Langmuir adsorption isotherm, indicating that the adsorbent surface was covered in a monolayer. The kinetics was also evaluated using the pseudo-first and pseudo-second order models. The coefficient of determination, r2, were found to be 0.09703, 0.9989, 0.9967 and 0.9998 for DIA DEA, ATOH and atrazine, respectively, for pseudo-second order, signifying that, all analytes were found to follow the pseudo-second order rate model showing that the rate limiting step is chemisorption in the sorption process. Based on these findings, the non-edible and disposable part of the oyster mushrooms can be utilized as a preferred alternative biosorbent for the uptake of the target compounds analysed and other pollutants possessing comparable physicochemical characteristics occurring in various water bodies.

Dosage-sensitive and simultaneous detection of multiple small-molecule pollutants in environmental water and agriproducts using portable SERS-based lateral flow immunosensor

The co-contamination of pesticide residues and mycotoxins in agricultural products is a global concern, with the potential for cumulative and synergistic damaging effects, imposing substantial health and economic burdens to the public. The dosage-sensitive and simultaneous detection of multiple pollutants, with a heightened sensitivity in real samples, poses a significant demand and challenge. Herein, we propose a portable detection method integrating surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-with lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA), offering high sensitivity and multiplex analysis capabilities. This approach enables the simultaneous detection of imidacloprid (IMI), pyraclostrobin (PYR) and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) through a single test strip. Utilizing the immune-specific binding between antigen and antibodies, we immobilised antibody- conjugated SERS nanotags on three test lines of the strips to generate Raman signal amplification in the proposed biosensor. Accurate quantitative analysis was performed by measuring the SERS signal intensity on the test lines. The limits of detection were 8.6 pg/mL for IMI, 97.4 pg/mL for PYR and 8.9 pg/mL for AFB1, exhibiting sensitivities 12-fold, 102-fold and11-fold higher than the colorimetric signals, respectively. Importantly, the SERS-LFIA immunosensor demonstrated robust performance when applied to real samples, yielding recoveries ranging from 86.16 % to 115.0 %, with relative standard deviation values below 8.67 %. These results underscore the excellent stability, high selectivity and reliability the proposed SERS-LFIA immunosensor. Consequently, it holds promise for the detection of multiple pesticides and mycotoxins in both environmental and agricultural samples.

Pesticides in Ethiopian surface waters: A meta-analytic based ecological risk assessment

In most developing countries, including Ethiopia, a conspicuous gap exists in understanding risk of pesticides and establishing robust regulatory frameworks for their effective management. In this context, we present a detailed assessment of pesticide risks within Ethiopian aquatic ecosystems in at least 18 distinct surface water bodies, including 46 unique sample locations. Measured environmental concentrations (MECs; n = 388) of current-use pesticides (n = 52), sourced from existing field studies, were compared against their respective regulatory threshold levels (RTLs). The results indicated a scarcity of pesticide exposure data across the majority of Ethiopian water bodies situated within agricultural watersheds. Importantly, surface water pesticide concentrations ranged from 0.0001 to 142.66 μg/L, with a median concentration of 0.415 μg/L. The available dataset revealed that 142 out of 356 MECs (approximately 40 %) of the identified pesticides entail significant acute risks to aquatic ecosystems, with the highest RTL exceedances up to a factor of 8695. Among the pesticide use groups, insecticides exhibited the highest exceedance rate, while this was rarer for fungicides and herbicides. Furthermore, a species-specific insecticide risk assessment indicated aquatic invertebrates (54.4 %) and fishes (38.4 %) are more exposed to pesticide risks, attributable to pyrethroids and organophosphates. In conclusion, our findings demonstrate that the presently registered pesticides in Ethiopia carry elevated risks towards aquatic environments under real-world settings. This challenges the notion that pesticides approved through Ethiopian pesticide regulatory risk assessment entail minimal environmental hazards. Consequently, we advocate for the adoption of more refined risk assessment strategies, a post-registration reevaluation process, and, if deemed necessary, the imposition of bans or restrictions on highly toxic pesticides.

Exposure levels and health implications of fungicides, neonicotinoid insecticides, triazine herbicides and their associated metabolites in pregnant women and men

Exposure to pesticides can pose a series of advance effects on human health. However, the exposure levels and health implications of the current use pesticides and their metabolites in both men and pregnant women remain unclear. In this study, an analytical method was developed to quantify fungicides, neonicotinoid insecticides, triazine herbicides, and their metabolites in the human serum. Fifty of the 73 target pesticides and metabolites were detected in the human serum of men and pregnant women from Wuxi, China, which included 11 triazine herbicides and metabolites, 17 neonicotinoid insecticides and metabolites, and 22 fungicides. Fungicides had the highest cumulative concentration (49.5 ng/mL), followed by neonicotinoid insecticides and metabolites (6.38 ng/mL), and triazine herbicides and metabolites (5.10 ng/mL). Moreover, the estimated daily intake (EDI) of fungicides was 10.4 and 12.7 times higher than that of triazine herbicides (included their metabolites) and neonicotinoid insecticides (included their metabolites), respectively. Of the three categories of pesticides, exposure to fungicides contributed to the highest exposure risk within the hazard quotient in the range of 5.1 × 10-3-0.17. Correlation analysis revealed that the pesticide exposure levels in human serum were correlated with their maximum residue levels in vegetables and fruits. Pesticide exposure has also been correlated with the weight and Body Mass Index (BMI) of humans based on structural equation modeling. This study provides new insights into the exposure of men and pregnant women to a cocktail of fungicides, neonicotinoid insecticides, triazine herbicides and their metabolites.

Occurrence of contaminants of emerging concern and pesticides and relative risk assessment in Tunisian groundwater

Groundwater is an important source for drinking water supply, agricultural irrigation and industrial uses in the Middle East and North Africa region. Due to the growing need for groundwater use, groundwater quality studies on the presence of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) and pesticides have gained attention. The Wadi El Bey is one of the most polluted areas in Tunisia. However, very limited data on CECs infiltration into aquifers has been described, in comparison to industrialized countries where groundwater contamination has been comprehensively addressed. To gain early insight into potential contamination, groundwater wells in northeast Tunisia, an area with high population density and intensive agricultural activity were sampled during two seasons and were analyzed with two high resolution mass spectrometry approaches: target and suspect screening. The latter was used for screening banned pesticides. A selection of 116 CECs of which 19 are transformation products (TPs) and 20 pesticides previously prioritized by suspect screening were screened in the groundwater samples. The results showed the presence of 69 CECs and 1 TP and 20 pesticides at concentrations per well, ranging between 43 and 7384 ng L-1 and 7.3 and 80 ng L-1, respectively. CECs concentrations in Tunisian groundwater do not differ from those in industrialized countries. WWTPs were considered the main source of pollution, where the main classes detected were analgesics, antihypertensives and artificial sweeteners and especially caffeine, salicylic acid and ibuprofen were found to be ubiquitous. Regarding pesticides, triazines herbicides and carbamates insecticides pose the highest concern due to their ubiquitous presence, high leachability potential for most of them and high toxicity. The environmental risk assessment (ERA) highlighted the high risk that caffeine, ibuprofen, and propoxur may pose to the environment, and consequently, to non-target organisms. This study provides occurrence and ERA analysis of CECs and pesticides in Tunisian groundwater.

Predicting the impact and duration of persistent and mobile organic compounds in groundwater systems using a contaminant mass discharge approach

This study investigated methods for predicting the duration and impact on groundwater quality from persistent and mobile organic compounds (PMOCs) at a drinking water well field affected by multiple contaminant sources. The fungicide metabolite N,N-dimethylsulfamide (DMS), which frequently occurs above the Danish groundwater quality criterion (0.1 μg/L), was used as an example. By combining contaminant mass discharge (CMD) estimations, modeling, and groundwater dating, a number of important discoveries were made. The current center of contaminant mass was located near the source area. The CMD at the well field was predicted to peak in 2040, and an effect from the investigated sources on groundwater quality could be expected until the end of the 21st century. A discrepancy in the current CMD at the well field and the estimated arrival time from the studied source area suggested an additional pesticide source, which has not yet been thoroughly investigated. The presence of the unknown source was supported by model simulations, producing an improved mass balance after inclusion of a contaminant source closer to the well field. The approach applied here was capable of predicting the duration and impact of DMS contamination at a well field at catchment scale. It furthermore shows potential for identification and quantification of the contribution from individual sources, and is also applicable for other PMOCs. Predicting the duration of the release and impact of contaminant sources on abstraction wells is highly valuable for water resources management and authorities responsible for contaminant risk assessment, remediation, and long-term planning at water utilities.

Pesticide Mixtures in Surface Waters of Two Protected Areas in Southwestern Germany

Pesticides enter non-target surface waters as a result of agricultural activities and may reach water bodies in protected areas. We measured in southwestern Germany pesticide concentrations after heavy rainfalls in streams of a drinking water protection area near Hausen (Freiburg) and in the catchment of the Queich (Landau), which originates from the biosphere reserve Palatinate Forest. On average, 32 (n = 21) and 21 (n = 10) pesticides were detected per sample and event in the area of Hausen (n = 56) and in the Queich catchment (n = 17), respectively. The majority of pesticides detected in > 50% of all samples were fungicides, with fluopyram being detected throughout all samples. Aquatic invertebrates exhibited highest risks with 16.1% of samples exceeding mixture toxicity thresholds, whereas risks were lower for aquatic plants (12.9%) and fish (6.5%). Mixture toxicity threshold exceedances indicate adverse ecological effects to occur at half of sites (50%). This study illustrates the presence of pesticide mixtures and highlights ecological risks for aquatic organisms in surface waters of protected areas in Germany.

Pesticides in aquifers from Latin America and the Caribbean

In Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), agriculture is the primary consumer of water and the biggest user of pesticides worldwide. Given that groundwater is a crucial resource in this region, a systematic review was conducted to evaluate the current state of knowledge on the presence of pesticides in aquifers. The review examined 48 research papers published between 1998 and 2020, and found that only six countries in the region have information on pesticides in groundwater. A total of 70 agrochemicals were detected, encompassing legacy pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, and metabolites. Herbicides, including the widely used atrazine and glyphosate, were the most commonly detected current-use pesticides. These herbicides are being gradually banned or restricted due to their potentially harmful effects on the environment. Factors that contribute to the presence of these contaminants in aquifers include preferential flows, seasonal variations in rainfall, aquifer type, unsaturated zone thickness, and land use and management practices. Researchers noted that analysis of these contaminants is often beyond the economic or methodological scope, and analytical capacity in the region is generally limited. Based on the findings of this review, there is a clear need for groundwater pesticide monitoring in the region to reduce health risks to humans and ecosystems.

Microalgal-based bioremediation of emerging contaminants: Mechanisms and challenges

Emerging contaminants (ECs) in different ecosystems have consistently been acknowledged as a global issue due to toxicity, human health implications, and potential role in generating and disseminating antimicrobial resistance. The existing wastewater treatment system is incompetent at eliminating ECs since the effluent water contains significant concentrations of ECs, viz., antibiotics (0.03-13.0 μg L-1), paracetamol (50 μg L-1), and many others in varying concentrations. Microalgae are considered as a prospective and sustainable candidate for mitigating of ECs owing to some peculiar features. In addition, the microalgal-based processes also offer cost and energy-efficient solutions for the bioremediation of ECs than conventional treatment systems. It is pertinent that, microalgal-based processes also provides waste valorization benefits as microalgal biomass obtained after ECs treatment can be potentially applied to generate biofuels. Moreover, microalgae can effectively utilize alternative metabolic (cometabolism) routes for enhanced degradation of ECs. Additionally, the ECs removal via the microalgal biodegradation route is highly promising as it can transform the ECs into less toxic compounds. The present review comprehensively discusses different mechanisms involved in removing ECs and various factors that affect their removal. Also, the technoeconomic feasibility of microalgae than other conventional wastewater treatment methods is summarised. The review also highlighted the different molecular and genetic tools that can augment the activity and robustness of microalgae for better removal of organic contaminants. Finally, we have summarised the challenges and future research required towards microalgal-based bioremediation of emerging contaminants (ECs) as a holistic approach.

Occurrence and risk assessment of pesticides and pharmaceuticals in viticulture impacted watersheds from Northwest Spain

An automated analytical methodology was developed, validated and applied to monitor 73 organic pollutants (pesticides and pharmaceuticals) in surface and groundwater samples obtained in watersheds from an intensive viticulture, rural region, in the Northwest of Spain. Filtered samples were concentrated using a reusable solid-phase extraction sorbent, on-line combined with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The analytical procedure achieved limits of quantification between 1 ng L-1 and 10 ng L-1, with a throughput of 2 samples hour-1, providing accurate recoveries for more than 90% of the 73 selected compounds, using calibration solutions prepared in ultrapure water (in presence of methanol and formic acid) as neat solvent. The distribution and the concentrations of pesticides in small streams impacted by discharges of treated municipal wastewaters were different in rural and residential areas. On the other hand, pharmaceuticals showed a similar distribution in both streams. In surface waters from viticulture impacted watersheds, with a limited influence of municipal wastewaters, pulses of pesticides were noticed, with values above 100 ng L-1 for several fungicides. Cardiovascular pharmaceuticals, psychiatric drugs and/or their transformation products were also ubiquitous in these samples, with low, but relatively stable concentrations among sampling campaigns. Within the suite of investigated compounds, maximum pesticide residues remained below their predicted-non effect concentration (PNEC) in all samples. On the other hand, the environmental concentrations of the cardiovascular drug olmesartan stayed systematically above its PNEC in fresh water samples.

A new series of acylhydrazones derived from metribuzin with modulated herbicidal activity

This paper reports the preparation and herbicidal evaluation of a small library of acylhydrazones based on the synthetic herbicide metribuzin. The hydrazone linkage easily obtained by reaction of metribuzin with aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes, masks efficiently the exocyclic amino group, thereby altering significantly H-bonding with the receptor and increasing the lipophilicity relative to the parent herbicide. The structures of all compounds, including key stereochemical issues on conformation and E/Z configuration around the C[bond, double bond]N bond were thoroughly elucidated by spectroscopic methods, and unambiguously corroborated by X-ray diffraction analysis. The herbicidal assays using an aliphatic and an aromatic acylhydrazone were performed on tomato and rapeseed plants grown in greenhouse. Our results demonstrate, regardless of rate application, that such acylhydrazone formulations do not alter the selectivity of metribuzin. Moreover, the herbicide activity was even higher in the alkyl derivative than that achieved by commercial metribuzin, thus suggesting that this substance can be applied with no need of combination with chemical coadjuvants, unlike most formulations of commercially available herbicides. Therefore, the study shows the promising effect of chemical derivatization of a common herbicide as metribuzin, to improve the herbicide activity without compromising selectivity, and allowing the farmers its use in crop protection safely and effectively.

Chlorination of amides: Kinetics and mechanisms of formation of N-chloramides and their reactions with phenolic compounds

Amides are common constituents in natural organic matter and synthetic chemicals. In this study, we investigated kinetics and mechanisms of the reactions of chlorine with seven amides, including acetamide, N-methylformamide, N-methylacetamide, benzamide, N-methylbenzamide, N-propylbenzamide, and N-(benzoylglycyl)glycine amide. Apparent second-order rate constants for the reactions of the amides with chlorine at pH 8 are in the range of 5.8 × 10-3 - 1.8 M-1s-1 and activation energies in the range of 62-88 kJ/mol. The second-order rate constants for the reactions of chlorine with different amides decrease with increasing electron donor character of the substituents on the amide-N and N-carbonyl-C in the amide structures. Hypochlorite (‒OCl) dominates the reactions of chlorine with amides yielding N-chloramides with species-specific second-order rate constants in the range of 7.3 × 10-3 - 2.3 M-1s-1. Kinetic model simulations suggest that N-chlorinated primary amides further react with HOCl with second-order rate constants in the order of 10 M-1s-1. The chlorination products of amides, N-chloramides are reactive towards phenolic compounds, forming chlorinated phenols via electrophilic aromatic substitution (phenol and resorcinol) and quinone via electron transfer (hydroquinone). Meanwhile, N-chloramides were recycled to the parent amides. At neutral pH, apparent second-order rate constants for the reactions between phenols and N-chloramides are in the order of 10-4-0.1 M-1s-1, comparable to those with chloramine. The findings of this study improve the understanding of the fate of amides and chlorine during chlorination processes.

Degradation of the Novel Heterocyclic Insecticide Pyraquinil in Water: Kinetics, Degradation Pathways, Transformation Products Identification, and Toxicity Assessment

As new pesticides are continuously introduced into agricultural systems, it is essential to investigate their environmental behavior and toxicity effects to better evaluate their potential risks. In this study, the degradation kinetics, pathways, and aquatic toxicity of the new fused heterocyclic insecticide pyraquinil in water under different conditions were investigated for the first time. Pyraquinil was classified as an easily degradable pesticide in natural water, and hydrolyzes faster in alkaline conditions and at higher temperatures. The formation trends of the main transformation products (TPs) of pyraquinil were also quantified. Fifteen TPs were identified in water using ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled to quadrupole Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Orbitrap-HRMS) and Compound Discoverer software, which adopted suspect and nontarget screening strategies. Among them, twelve TPs were reported for the first time and 11 TPs were confirmed by synthesis of their standards. The proposed degradation pathways have demonstrated that the 4,5-dihydropyrazolo[1,5-a]quinazoline skeleton of pyraquinil is stable enough to retain in its TPs. ECOSAR prediction and laboratory tests showed that pyraquinil was "very toxic" or "toxic" to aquatic organisms, while the toxicities of all of the TPs are substantially lower than that of pyraquinil except for TP484, which was predicted to pose a higher toxicity. The results are important for elucidating the fate and assessing the environmental risks of pyraquinil, and provide guidance for scientific and reasonable use.

Long-term leaching through clayey till of N,N-dimethylsulfamide, a Persistent and Mobile Organic Compound (PMOC)

Environmental pollution with Persistent and Mobile Organic Compounds (PMOC) from anthropogenic activities is an increasing cause for concern. These compounds are readily leached to groundwater aquifers and are likely to resist degradation, putting pressure on groundwater resources. Pesticides can form PMOCs upon degradation in the environment. The PMOC N,N-dimethylsulfamide (DMS) was the most frequently detected pesticide metabolite in Danish drinking water wells in 2020, although the pesticidal use of the last parent compound (tolylfluanid) ended in 2007. This study aimed to improve the understanding of the leaching of the PMOC DMS from clayey tills by combining a review of compound properties, sources and use, comprehensive field observations and numerical flow and solute transport modeling. The modeling explored the mechanisms of DMS retention during vertical transport in clayey till and the fingerprint in the underlying aquifer. The results were supported by detailed field observations at an agricultural site with strawberry production. Porewater samples were collected from clayey till to a depth of 12 m bgs by a custom designed installation method of suction cups. Groundwater sampling (249 samples) was designed to provide vertical concentration profiles at various distances from the presumed sources. The review of properties showed that the parent compounds and intermediates degrade quickly in topsoil, releasing the highly persistent and mobile DMS. We tested the effect of fractures on transport with different hydraulic apertures and a scenario without fractures by numerical modeling. The results showed that the presence of fractures can smooth the breakthrough curve below the clayey till, leading to faster breakthrough, lower maximum concentration, and several decades of prolonged leaching in simulations with the largest aperture (20 μm). The fracture-matrix interaction is a possible explanation for the observed delay of leaching from clayey till. The vertical concentration profiles in groundwater were used for identifying the sources at the field site and testing source strengths. Assigning one point source (200 μg/L) and two diffuse sources (40-50 μg/L) to the model produced vertical concentration profiles that compared well with observed field data in clayey till and the aquifer. All results were integrated into a conceptual model for the environmental fate of PMOCs in soil and groundwater. The findings of this study imply that the presence of fractures in clayey till should be considered in conceptual site models, since they can substantially prolong the leaching of PMOCs to groundwater. The integration of comprehensive field investigations and numerical modeling is key to understand the fate of PMOCs in complex field systems with different source types. Together with widespread occurrences of PMOCs in groundwater systems, the results highlight the need for improved approval procedures for pesticides and biocides which considers their persistent and mobile metabolites.

EU need to protect its environment from toxic per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances

The Environmental Protection Agencies (EPAs) of Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Germany and the Netherlands submitted a proposal to the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) in February 2023 calling for a ban in the use of toxic industrial chemicals per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). These chemicals are highly toxic causing elevated cholesterol, immune suppression, reproductive failure, cancer and neuro-endocrine disruption in humans and wildlife being a significant threat to biodiversity and human health. The main reason for the submitted proposal is recent findings of significant flaws in the transition to PFAS replacements that is leading to a widespread pollution. Denmark was the first country banning PFAS, and now other EU countries support the restrictions of these carcinogenic, endocrine disruptive and immunotoxic chemicals. The proposed plan is among the most extensive received by the ECHA for 50 years. Denmark is now the first EU country to initiate the establishment of groundwater parks to try and protect its drinking water. These parks are areas free of agricultural activities and nutritious sewage sludge to secure drinking water free of xenobiotic including PFAS. The PFAS pollution also reflects the lack of comprehensive spatial and temporal environmental monitoring programs in the EU. Such monitoring programs should include key indicator species across ecosystems of livestock, fish and wildlife, to facilitate detection of early ecological warning signals and sustain public health. Simultaneously with inferring a total PFAS ban, the EU should also push for more persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) PFAS substances to be listed on the Stockholm Convention (SC) Annex A such as PFOS (perfluorooctane sulfonic acid) that is currently listed on the SCs Annex B. The combination of these regulative restrictions combined with groundwater parks and pan-European biomonitoring programs, would pave the way forward for a cleaner environment to sustain health across the EU.

Global distribution of pesticides in freshwater resources and their remediation approaches

The role of pesticides in enhancing global agricultural production is magnificent. However, their unmanaged use threatens water resources and individual health. A significant pesticide concentration leaches to groundwater or reaches surface waters through runoff. Water contaminated with pesticides may cause acute or chronic toxicity to impacted populations and exert adverse environmental effects. It necessitates the monitoring and removing pesticides from water resources as prime global concerns. This work reviewed the global occurrences of pesticides in potable water and discussed the conventional and advanced technologies for the removal of pesticides. The concentration of pesticides highly varies in freshwater resources across the globe. The highest concentration of α-HCH (6.538 μg/L, at Yucatan, Mexico), lindane (6.08 μg/L at Chilka lake, Odisha, India), 2,4, DDT (0.90 μg/L, at Akkar, Lebanon), chlorpyrifos (9.1 μg/L, at Kota, Rajasthan, India), malathion (5.3 μg/L, at Kota, Rajasthan, India), atrazine (28.0 μg/L, at Venado Tuerto City, Argentina), endosulfan (0.78 μg/L, at Yavtmal, Maharashtra, India), parathion (4.17 μg/L, at Akkar, Lebanon), endrin (3.48 μg/L, at KwaZuln-Natl Province, South Africa) and imidacloprid (1.53 μg/L, at Son-La province, Vietnam) are reported. Pesticides can be significantly removed through physical, chemical, and biological treatment. Mycoremediation technology has the potential for up to 90% pesticide removal from water resources. Complete removal of the pesticides through a single biological treatment approach such as mycoremediation, phytoremediation, bioremediation, and microbial fuel cells is still a challenging task, however, the integration of two or more biological treatment approaches can attain complete removal of pesticides from water resources. Physical methods along with oxidation methods can be employed for complete removal of pesticides from drinking water.

Microbial hydrolysis of atrazine in contaminated groundwater

Degradation of the widespread herbicide atrazine has been intensively studied in soils, while its degradation in groundwater has received less attention. This work studied atrazine degradation in contaminated groundwater adjacent to its production plant. The degradation potential was first explored in groundwater enrichment cultures. A broad potential for microbial atrazine degradation was observed when atrazine served as the sole nitrogen source, even when incubated with nitrate. Hydroxyatrazine was formed by the cultures, while desethylatrazine and desisopropylatrazine were not detected. Both the atzA and the trzN genes were identified by quantitative PCR analysis, with a clear dominance of atzA. Carbon isotope enrichments throughout the degradation process varied between the different cultures, with ε values ranging from -0.6 to -5.5‰. This implies corresponding uncertainties when using compound-specific isotope analysis to estimate degradation extents. In the field samples, in-situ degradation was reflected by a high percentage of metabolites, with hydroxyatrazine accounting for >95% of the metabolites in most wells. Both atzA and trzN were detected in the groundwater at quantities of ≈10² to 10⁶ copies mL^-1, with a dominance of atzA over trzN. These results provide evidence of the high potential for atrazine hydrolysis in the contaminated groundwater.

Innovative electrochemical biosensor with nitrifying biofilm and nitrite oxidation signal for comprehensive toxicity detection in Tuojiang River

Water toxicity detection, as a valuable supplement to conventional water quality measurement, is an important method for evaluating water environmental quality standards. However, the toxicity of composite pollutants is more complicated due to their mixture effects. This study developed a novel, rapid and interference-resistant detection method for water toxicity based on an electrochemical biosensor using peak current from nitrite oxidation as a signal. Toxicants could weaken the characteristic peak current of nitrite to indicate the magnitude of toxicity. The proof-of-concept study was first conducted using a synthetic water sample containing trichloroacetic acid (TCAA), and then the results were compared with those of the traditional toxicity colorimetric method (CCK-8 kit) and laser confocal microscopy (CLSM). The accuracy of the biosensor was further verified with water samples containing individual pollutants such as Cd²⁺ (50-150 μg/L), Cr⁶⁺ (20-80 μg/L) mixture, triclosan (TCS; 0.1-1.0 μg/L) and TCAA (10-80 μg/L), or a mixture of the above. The viability of the sensor was further validated with the actual water sample from the Tuojiang River. The results demonstrated that although the concentration of a single conventional pollutant in water did not exceed the discharge standard for surface water, the comprehensive toxicity of natural water should not be ignored. This method could be a beneficial supplement to conventional water quality detection to understand the characteristics of the water, and thus contribute to the next stage of water treatment.

Refining acute human exposure assessment to pesticides in surface water: An integrated data-driven modeling approach

The substantial spatial and temporal variability of pesticides has led to large uncertainties when determining their peak aqueous concentrations. There is however a lack of large-scale studies dealing with accurate determination of annual maximum daily concentration (AMDC) across the landscape and over time based on the publicly available monitoring data. We developed a novel data-driven approach that firstly used time series modeling to generate AMDCs for qualified water monitoring sites in the conterminous U.S. With feature variables such as pesticide use and land cover compiled into the dataset, machine learning models using eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) and Random Forest Regressor (RF) were then developed to estimate AMDCs in surface waters across the U.S. Both models exhibited significant predictability, while a hybrid model consisting of the average predictions by XGBoost and RF model had the highest prediction accuracy (mean absolute error (MAE): 1.23; R²: 0.61). The analysis of permutation variable importance indicated that pesticide use and drainage area were the two most important drivers. Partial dependence analysis revealed that pesticide use, precipitation, cultivated crop land cover and solubility exhibited concentration-promoting effects, whereas drainage area and molecular weight had concentration-demoting effects. Soil adsorption coefficient (Koc) showed nonmonotonic effects. The hybrid model was used to predict and map AMDCs of four example pesticides, including 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), atrazine, glyphosate and imidacloprid during 2016-2019 at national scale. The predictive capability was validated using independent monitoring datasets. The fully evaluated approach significantly reduced the uncertainties in modeling annual peak concentrations and served as a valuable solution for conducting geographically oriented, highly refined exposure assessments for pesticides.

Three-dimensional structured electrode for electrocatalytic organic wastewater purification: Design, mechanism and role

Considering the growing need in decentralized water treatment, the application of electrocatalytic processes (EP) to achieve organic wastewater purification will be dominant in the near future due to high efficiency, small reactor assembly as well as the flexibility of operation and management. The catalytic performance of electrode materials determines the development of this technology. Among them, the unique three-dimensional (3D) structure electrode shows better performance than two-dimensional (2D) electrode in increasing mass transfer, enhancing adsorption and exposing more active sites. Hence, this review starts with the introduction of definition, classification, advantages and disadvantages of 3D electrode materials. Then a critical discussion on the design and construction of 3D electrode materials for organic wastewater purification application is provided. Next, the removal mechanism of organic pollutants on the surface of 3D electrode, the role of 3D structure, the design of reactor with 3D electrode, the conversion and toxicity of degradation products, electrode energy efficiency, stability and cost, are comprehensively reviewed. At last, current challenges and future perspectives for the development of 3D electrode materials are addressed. We deem that this review will provide a valuable insight into the design and application of 3D electrodes in environmental water purification.

A Current Review of Water Pollutants in American Continent: Trends and Perspectives in Detection, Health Risks, and Treatment Technologies

Currently, water pollution represents a serious environmental threat, causing an impact not only to fauna and flora but also to human health. Among these pollutants, inorganic and organic pollutants are predominantly important representing high toxicity and persistence and being difficult to treat using current methodologies. For this reason, several research groups are searching for strategies to detect and remedy contaminated water bodies and effluents. Due to the above, a current review of the state of the situation has been carried out. The results obtained show that in the American continent a high diversity of contaminants is present in the water bodies affecting several aspects, in which in some cases, there exists alternatives to realize the remediation of contaminated water. It is concluded that the actual challenge is to establish sanitation measures at the local level based on the specific needs of the geographical area of interest. Therefore, water treatment plants must be designed according to the contaminants present in the water of the region and tailored to the needs of the population of interest.

Drinking Water From Private Wells and Risks to Children

Drinking water for approximately 23 million US households is obtained from private wells. These wells can become contaminated by pollutant chemicals or pathogenic organisms, leading to significant illness. Although the US Environmental Protection Agency and all states offer guidance for construction, maintenance, and testing of private wells, most states only regulate the construction of new private water wells. With a few exceptions, there is little regulation after construction. Well owners are responsible for their own wells. Children may also drink well water at child care or when traveling. Illness resulting from children’s ingestion of contaminated water can be severe. This report reviews relevant aspects of groundwater and wells; describes the common chemical and microbiologic contaminants; gives an algorithm with recommendations for inspection, testing, and remediation for wells providing drinking water for children; and provides references and Internet resources for more information.

Bottled water contaminant exposures and potential human effects

BACKGROUND

Bottled water (BW) consumption in the United States and globally has increased amidst heightened concern about environmental contaminant exposures and health risks in drinking water supplies, despite a paucity of directly comparable, environmentally-relevant contaminant exposure data for BW. This study provides insight into exposures and cumulative risks to human health from inorganic/organic/microbial contaminants in BW.

METHODS

BW from 30 total domestic US (23) and imported (7) sources, including purified tapwater (7) and spring water (23), were analyzed for 3 field parameters, 53 inorganics, 465 organics, 14 microbial metrics, and in vitro estrogen receptor (ER) bioactivity. Health-benchmark-weighted cumulative hazard indices and ratios of organic-contaminant in vitro exposure-activity cutoffs were assessed for detected regulated and unregulated inorganic and organic contaminants.

RESULTS

48 inorganics and 45 organics were detected in sampled BW. No enforceable chemical quality standards were exceeded, but several inorganic and organic contaminants with maximum contaminant level goal(s) (MCLG) of zero (no known safe level of exposure to vulnerable sub-populations) were detected. Among these, arsenic, lead, and uranium were detected in 67 %, 17 %, and 57 % of BW, respectively, almost exclusively in spring-sourced samples not treated by advanced filtration. Organic MCLG exceedances included frequent detections of disinfection byproducts (DBP) in tapwater-sourced BW and sporadic detections of DBP and volatile organic chemicals in BW sourced from tapwater and springs. Precautionary health-based screening levels were exceeded frequently and attributed primarily to DBP in tapwater-sourced BW and co-occurring inorganic and organic contaminants in spring-sourced BW.

CONCLUSION

The results indicate that simultaneous exposures to multiple drinking-water contaminants of potential human-health concern are common in BW. Improved understandings of human exposures based on more environmentally realistic and directly comparable point-of-use exposure characterizations, like this BW study, are essential to public health because drinking water is a biological necessity and, consequently, a high-vulnerability vector for human contaminant exposures.

Identification of Heavy Metals and Organic Micropollutants in Drinking Water Sources in Typical Villages and Towns in Northeast China

This study identified and detected the existence of major pollutants in northeast China. As an alpine region and an agricultural base, this region has representative significance in pollution research. We selected 56 samples from drinking water sources of typical villages and towns, focusing on the analysis of heavy metals and organic micropollutants in northeast China. The analysis results showed that Fe and Mn were the main metal elements exceeding the standard. The exceeding rates were 17.9% and 19.6%. Experiments showed that there were 19 kinds of pesticides, 6 kinds of OPEs, 2 kinds of PAEs, 22 kinds of PPCPs. The detection rate of these 49 kinds of organic micro-pollutants were 1.79~82.14%. The characteristics of organic pollution were extensive and varied. Many underground water samples had high level of micropollutants. The water quality parameters of drinking water sources in villages and towns showed close relation to local geological conditions and agricultural activities. Actions must be taken to control these parameters from the source of pollution.

Geochemical matrix differently affects the response of internal standards and target analytes for pesticide transformation products measured in groundwater samples

Electrospray ionization (ESI) is the most common technique in liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS) allowing for sensitive detection of polar compounds with online water concentration. The technique is popular in groundwater monitoring programs and has permitted great progress in the detection and quantification of polar pesticide transformation products (TP) in recent years. However, ESI is also known to be prone to matrix effects. The common solution to this potential bias is the use of labelled internal standards. Unfortunately, these are not available for all target compounds, which leads to the linkage of target compounds to non-homologue internal standards with unknown consequences for quantification in variable geochemical settings. We investigated these matrix effects for polar TP with a molecular mass range of 225-350 Da and logD_pH7 between -0.27 and -1.7 as well as for parent compounds with logD_pH3 between 0.84 and 3.22. The acquired internal standards were tested on a gradient of DOC, anions, conductivity and inorganic carbon with a set of ten carefully chosen groundwater samples. Internal standards that were measured in positive ionization mode proved to be insensitive to geochemical variations while those that were measured in negative ionization mode showed reduced response with increasing anion concentration. All pairs of internal standards and target analytes were investigated for deviating matrix effects using standard addition experiments. Positive ionization compounds and target compounds with deuterated homologues showed little deviation while non-homologue pairs in negative mode proved to be strongly biased. Although bias was up to factor five for some compounds it was remarkably stable over the entire gradient studied, suggesting an identical suppression mode at varying matrix levels for different compounds. We advocate the conduct of standard addition experiments if homologue internal standards are not available.

Pesticides and their metabolites in European groundwater: Comparing regulations and approaches to monitoring in France, Denmark, England and Switzerland

Pesticides, i.e. plant protection products (PPP), biocides and their metabolites, pose a serious threat to groundwater quality and groundwater dependent ecosystems. Across large parts of Europe these compounds are monitored in groundwater to ensure compliance with the European Water Framework Directive (WFD), the Groundwater Directive (GWD) and Drinking water Directive (DWD). European regulation concerning the placing of PPP on the market includes groundwater monitoring as a higher tier of the regulatory procedure. Nevertheless, the lists of compounds to be monitored vary from one directive to another and between countries. The implementation of monitoring strategies for these directives and other national drivers, differs across Europe. This is illustrated using case studies from France, Denmark (EU member states), England (part of the EU up to January 2020) and Switzerland (associated country). The collection of data (e.g. monitoring design and analytical approaches) and dissemination at national and European level and the scale of data reporting to EU is country-specific. Data generated by the implementation of WFD and DWD can be used for retrospective purposes in the context of PPP registration whereas the post-registration monitoring data generated by the product applicants are generally only directly available to the regulators. This lack of consistency and strategic coordination between thematic regulations is partly compensated by national regulations. This paper illustrates the benefits of a common framework for regulation in Europe but shows that divergent national approaches to monitoring and reporting on pesticides in groundwater makes the task of assessment across Europe challenging.

Beyond a Spray: Pesticide Application Management in Rural China Based on Quadrilateral Evolutionary Game

Organic pesticides (OP) produce very little environmental contamination compared with conventional pesticides, but their use is low in rural China. Interest conflicts among participants are analysed for the first time to improve pesticide application management (PAM). Retailers, whose roles are usually little-mentioned, were found to be irreplaceable and so were included in the model as players. A quadrilateral evolutionary game is constructed for PAM and used data from field research in servey representative areas in rural China to estimate the future situation. It demonstrates that OP cannot be chosen by most farmers under the current policy and market environment. The simulation showed that: (i) The probability and economic loss of retailers when providing high-concentration pesticide recommendations positively impact OP application. (ii) The organic certification cost and the successful application probability both benefit environmental recovery in the short term, while the advantages outweigh the disadvantages in the long run. (iii) The cost of strict regulations negatively correlate with OP application; while the purchase price and the corresponding premium provided by intermediates positively/negatively correlates with OP application. This suggests that the environment would be better protected by increasing farmers' pesticide knowledge, reducing retailers' monopoly of influence, and providing subsidies and guidance for organic certification. Moreover, shortening the food supply chain and reducing regulatory costs would also help.

Non-target screening of micropollutants and transformation products for assessing AOP-BAC treatment in groundwater

Standard monitoring programs give limited insight into groundwater status, especially transformation products (TPs) formed by natural processes or advanced oxidation processes (AOP), are normally underrepresented. In this study, using suspect and non-target screening, we performed a comprehensive analysis of groundwater before and after AOP by UV/H₂O₂ and consecutively installed biological activated carbon filters (BAC). By non-target screening, up to 413 compounds were detected in the groundwater, with an average 70% removal by AOP. However, a similar number of compounds were formed during the process, shown in groundwater from three waterworks. The most polar compounds were typically the most stable during the AOP. A subsequent BAC filter showed removal of 95% of the TPs, but only 46% removal of the AOP remaining precursors. The BAC removal for polar compounds was highly dependent on the acidic and basic functional groups of the molecules. 49 compounds of a wide polarity range could be identified by supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) and liquid chromatography (LC) with high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS); of these, 29 compounds were already present in the groundwater. To the best of our knowledge, five compounds have never been reported before in groundwater (4-chlorobenzenesulfonic acid, dibutylamine, N-phenlybenzenesulfonamide, 2-(methylthio)benzothiazole and benzothiazole-2-sulfonate). A further five rarely reported compounds are reported for the first time in Danish groundwater (2,4,6-trichlorophenol, 2,5-dichlorobenzenesulfonic acid, trifluormethansulfonic acid, pyrimidinol and benzymethylamine). Twenty of the identified compounds were formed by AOP, of which 10 have never been reported before in groundwater. All detected compounds could be related to agricultural and industrial products as well as artificial sweeteners. Whereas dechlorination was a common AOP degradation pathway for chlorophenols, the (ultra-) short chain PFAs showed no removal in our study. We prioritized 11 compounds as of concern, however, the toxicity for many compounds remains unknown, especially for the TPs.

Complete Reductive Dechlorination of 4-Hydroxy-chlorothalonil by Dehalogenimonas Populations

Chlorothalonil (2,4,5,6-tetrachloroisophthalonitrile, TePN) is one of the most widely used fungicides all over the world. Its major environmental transformation product 4-hydroxy-chlorothalonil (4-hydroxy-2,5,6-trichloroisophthalonitrile, 4-OH-TPN) is more persistent, mobile, and toxic and is frequently detected at a higher concentration in various habitats compared to its parent compound TePN. Further microbial transformation of 4-OH-TPN has never been reported. In this study, we demonstrated that 4-OH-TPN underwent complete microbial reductive dehalogenation to 4-hydroxy-isophthalonitrile via 4-hydroxy-dichloroisophthalonitrile and 4-hydroxy-monochloroisophthalonitrile. 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing demonstrated that Dehalogenimonas species was enriched from 6% to 17-22% after reductive dechlorination of 77.24 μmol of 4-OH-TPN. Meanwhile, Dehalogenimonas copies increased by one order of magnitude and obtained a yield of 1.78 ± 1.47 × 10⁸ cells per μmol Cl^- released (N = 6), indicating that 4-OH-TPN served as the terminal electron acceptor for organohalide respiration of Dehalogenimonas species. A draft genome of Dehalogenimonas species was assembled through metagenomic sequencing, which harbors 30 putative reductive dehalogenase genes. Syntrophobacter, Acetobacterium, and Methanosarcina spp. were found to be the major non-dechlorinating populations in the microbial community, who might play important roles in the reductive dechlorination of 4-OH-TPN by the Dehalogenimonas species. This study first reports that Dehalogenimonas sp. can also respire on the seemingly dead-end product of TePN, paving the way to complete biotransformation of the widely present TePN and broadening the substrate spectrum of Dehalogenimonas sp. to polychlorinated hydroxy-benzonitrile.

Recent advances on rapid detection and remediation of environmental pollutants utilizing nanomaterials-based (bio)sensors

Environmental safety has become a significant issue for the safety of living species, humans, and the ecosystem as a consequence of the harmful and detrimental consequences of various pollutants such as pesticides, heavy metals, dyes, etc., emitted into the surroundings. To resolve this issue, various efforts, legal acts, scientific and technological perspectives have been embraced, but still remain a global concern. Furthermore, due to non-portability, complex detection, and inappropriate on-site recognition of sophisticated laboratory tools, the real-time analysis of these environmental contaminants has been limited. As a result of innovative nano bioconjugation and nanofabrication techniques, nanotechnology enables enhanced nanomaterials (NMs) based (bio)sensors demonstrating ultra-sensitivity and a short detection time in real-time analysis, as well as superior sensitivity, reliability, and selectivity have been developed. Several researchers have demonstrated the potent detection of pollutants such as Hg²⁺ ion by the usage of AgNP-MD in electronic and optoelectronic methods with a detection limit of 5-45 μM which is quite significant. Taking into consideration of such tremendous research, herein, the authors have highlighted 21st-century strategies towards NMs based biosensor technology for pollutants detection, including nano biosensors, enzyme-based biosensors, electrochemical-based biosensors, carbon-based biosensors and optical biosensors for on-site identification and detection of target analytes. This article will provide a brief overview of the significance of utilizing NMs-based biosensors for the detection of a diverse array of hazardous pollutants, and a thorough understanding of the detection processes of NMs-based biosensors, as well as the limit of quantification (LOQ) and limit of detection (LOD) values, rendering researchers to focus on the world's need for a sustainable earth.

Volatile organic compounds in groundwater used for public supply across the United States: Occurrence, explanatory factors, and human-health context

This systematic assessment of occurrence for 85 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in raw (untreated) groundwater used for public supply across the United States (U.S.), which includes 43 compounds not previously monitored by national studies, relates VOC occurrence to explanatory factors and assesses VOC detections in a human-health context. Samples were collected in 2013 through 2019 from 1537 public-supply wells in aquifers representing 78% of the volume pumped for public drinking-water supply. Laboratory detection limits for VOCs generally were less than 0.1 μg/L. Detections were reported for 36% of the sampled principal-aquifer area (38% of sampled wells) and were most common in wells in shallow, unconfined aquifers in urban areas that produce high proportions of modern-age and oxic groundwater. The disinfection by-product trichloromethane (chloroform) was the most commonly detected VOC associated primarily with anthropogenic sources (24% of the sampled area, 25% of sampled wells), followed by the gasoline oxygenate methyl tert-butyl ether (8.4% of area, 11% of wells). Carbon disulfide (12% of area, 14% of wells) was examined separately because of likely substantial contributions from natural sources. Newly monitored VOCs were each detected in <1% of the sampled area. Although detections of 1,4-dioxane in this first national study of its occurrence in raw groundwater were rare, measured concentrations exceeded the most stringent (non-enforceable) human-health benchmark in 0.5% of the sampled area (9 wells). Two wells had exceedances of enforceable benchmarks for tetrachloroethylene and trichloroethylene, and 50 wells total (representing 2.0% of the sampled area, 3.3% of sampled wells) had combined VOC concentrations exceeding 10% of benchmarks of any type. Compared with previous national findings, this study reports lower rates of VOC detection, but confirms widespread anthropogenic influence on groundwater used for public supply, with relatively few concentrations of individual VOCs or mixtures that approach or exceed human-health benchmarks.

Drinking water sources and water quality in a prospective agricultural cohort

We describe drinking water sources and water quality for a large agricultural cohort. We used questionnaire data from the Agricultural Health Study (N = 89,655), a cohort of licensed pesticide applicators and their spouses in Iowa (IA) and North Carolina (NC), to ascertain drinking water source at enrollment (1993-1997). For users of public water supplies (PWS), we linked participants' geocoded addresses to contaminant monitoring data [five haloacetic acids (HAA5), total trihalomethanes (TTHM), and nitrate-nitrogen (NO3-N)]. We estimated private well nitrate levels using random forest models accounting for well depth, soil characteristics, nitrogen inputs, and other predictors. We assigned drinking water source for 84% (N = 74,919) of participants. Among these, 69% of IA and 75% of NC participants used private wells; 27% in IA and 21% in NC used PWS. Median PWS nitrate concentrations (NO3-N) were higher in IA [0.9 mg/L, interquartile range (IQR): 0.4-3.1 mg/L] than NC (0.1 mg/L, IQR: 0.1-0.2 mg/L), while median HAA5 and TTHM concentrations were higher in NC (HAA5: 11.9 µg/L, IQR: 5.5-33.4 µg/L; TTHM: 37.7 µg/L, IQR: 10.7-54.7 µg/L) than IA (HAA5: 5.0 µg/L, IQR: 3.7-10.7 µg/L; TTHM: 13.0 µg/L, IQR: 4.2-32.4 µg/L). Private well nitrate concentrations in IA (1.5 mg/L, IQR: 0.8-4.9 mg/L) and NC (1.9 mg/L, IQR: 1.4-2.5 mg/L) were higher than PWS. More private wells in IA (12%) exceeded 10 mg/L NO3-N (regulatory limit for PWS) than NC (<1%). Due to the proximity of their drinking water sources to farms, agricultural communities may be exposed to elevated nitrate levels.

Fluopyram removal from agricultural equipment rinsing water using HSF pilot-scale constructed wetlands

Fluopyram is a novel broad-spectrum fungicide with nematocidal activity, and as an extensively used pesticide, it could cause toxicity in nontarget organisms. The aim of this study was to explore the efficiency of five horizontal subsurface flow (HSF) constructed wetlands (CWs) to remove fluopyram from rinsing water produced during the cleaning of pesticide spraying equipment. Four CWs, namely WG-R, WG-R-P, WG-C, and WG-U, contained fine gravel as porous media. WG-R and WG-R-P were planted with Phragmites australis, WG-C with Typha latifolia, and WG-U was left unplanted. Bioaugmentation with plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria was conducted in WG-R-P unit. The fifth unit (WGZ-R) planted with Phragmites australis and contained gravel and zeolite as porous media. All of CWs were loaded on a daily basis from December 2019 to January 2021 with water fortified with fluopyram. The removal rate follows the pattern of WG-R-P (70.67%) > WGZ-R (62.06%) > WG-C (59.98%) > WG-R (36.10%) > WG-U (25.09%). The most important parameters affecting the fluopyram removal were bioaugmentation, zeolite presence in porous media, and plant species. The WG-R-P unit showed higher fluopyram removal in comparison to the WG-R (increase about 96%), the zeolite increased the fluopyram removal by 72%, and the WG-C unit showed 66% higher fluopyram removal than the WG-R unit.

An Alternative Strategy for Screening and Confirmation of 330 Pesticides in Ground- and Surface Water Using Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry

The presence of pesticide residues in water is a huge worldwide concern. In this paper we described the development and validation of a new liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometric (LC-MS/MS) method for both screening and quantification of pesticides in water samples. In the sample preparation stage, the samples were buffered to pH 7.0 and pre-concentrated on polymeric-based cartridges via solid-phase extraction (SPE). Highly sensitive detection was carried out with mobile phases containing only 5 mM ammonium formate (pH of 6.8) as an eluent additive and using only positive ionization mode in MS/MS instrument. Hence, only 200-fold sample enrichment was required to set a screening detection limit (SDL) and reporting limit (RL) of 10 ng/L. The confirmatory method was validated at 10 and 100 ng/L spiking levels. The apparent recoveries obtained from the matrix-matched calibration (5–500 ng/L) were within the acceptable range (60–120%), also the precision (relative standard deviation, RSD) was not higher than 20%. During the development, 480 pesticides were tested and 330 compounds fulfilled the requirements of validation. The method was successfully applied to proficiency test samples to evaluate its accuracy. Moreover, the method robustness test was carried out using higher sample volume (500 mL) followed by automated SPE enrichment. Finally, the method was used to analyze 20 real samples, in which some compounds were detected around 10 ng/L, but never exceeded the assay maximum level.

Leaching and degradation of S-Metolachlor in undisturbed soil cores amended with organic wastes

Organic waste (OW) reuse in agriculture is a common practice fostered by benefits in terms of waste recycling and crop production. However, OW amendments potentially affect the fate of pesticide spread on fields to protect the crops from pests and weeds. The influence of OW on the sorption, degradation, and leaching of pesticides is generally studied for each mechanism separately under artificial laboratory conditions. Our study aims at evaluating the balance of these mechanisms under more realistic conditions to clarify the influence of three common OW amendments on the fate, in soil, of the widely used herbicide S-Metolachlor. We performed leaching experiments in large undisturbed soil cores amended with raw sewage sludge, composted sludge, and digested pig slurry (digestate), respectively. We monitored S-Metolachlor and its two main metabolites MET-OA and MET-ESA in the leachates during a succession of 10 rainfall events over 126 days. We also quantified the remaining S-Metolachlor and metabolites in the soil at the end of the experiments. S-Metolachlor leaching didn't exceed 0.1% of the applied dose with or without OW amendment. Despite a soil organic carbon increase of 3 to 32%, OW amendments did not significantly affect the amount of S-Metolachlor that leached through the soil (0.01 to 0.1%) nor its transformation rate (6.0 to 8.6%). However, it affected the degradation pathways with an increase of MET-OA relative to MET-ESA formed after OW amendment (28 to 54%) compared to the controls (8%). Concentration of S-Metolachlor and metabolites in the leachates of all treatments greatly exceeded the regulatory limit for groundwater intended for human consumption in Europe. These high concentrations were probably the consequence of preferential macropore flow. Colloids had comparable levels in the leachates after S-Metolachlor application. Dissolved organic carbon was also comparable in the controls, digestate, and sludge treatments but was 65% higher in the compost-amended cores. These results, along with a great variability among replicates inherent to experiments performed under realistic conditions, partly explain the limited impact of OW on the transport of S-Metolachlor.

Suspecting screening "known unknown" pesticides and transformation products in soil at pesticide manufacturing sites

The occurrence and risks of pesticides and their transformation products in soil at the manufacturing sites are "known unknowns." In this study, pesticides and their transformation products were screened in soil at 6 pesticide manufacturing sites across China using liquid and gas chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. The screening strategy can correctly identify 75% of 209 pesticides spiked at 50 ng g^-1. A total of 212 pesticides were identified; 23.1% of pesticides detected were above 200 ng g^-1, and the maximum concentration was 1.5 × 10⁵ ng g^-1. The risk quotients of 20% pesticides were greater than 1, and the maximum risk quotient of imidacloprid reached 6.3 × 10⁴. The most recent site showed a larger number of pesticides with higher diversity, whereas older sites were dominated by organochlorine insecticides. The extended screen identified 163 transformation products with concentrations up to 6.6 × 10⁴ ng g^-1. Half of the transformation products had higher concentrations than their parent compounds, and metabolic ratios up to 371 were observed. The results of this study validate the prevalence of pesticides and their transformation products in soil at pesticide manufacturing sites. The results also highlight the importance of comprehensive screening at industrial sites and call for improved management and regulation of pesticide manufacturing, particularly for in-service facilities.

Enhancement of membrane fouling mitigation and trace organic compounds removal by electric field in a microfiltration reactor treating secondary effluent of a municipal wastewater treatment plant

Applying an electric field in the membrane filtration was an effective method to alleviate membrane fouling and enhance the trace organic compounds (TrOCs) removal. The secondary effluent of a municipal wastewater treatment plant was used as feed water to evaluate the performance of the electric field coupled microfiltration system. Applying a 1.25 V voltage reduced 22.9% membrane fouling by electrophoretic force, and the membrane fouling was alleviated by 70.8% at 3 V by electrochemical oxidation and electric field force. At 3 V, active chlorine and hydroperoxide generated on the electrodes and the acidic environment formed around the anode significantly inhibited the growth of microorganisms and their attachment on the membrane surface, and thus reduced the membrane fouling formed by microorganisms. Electrochemical oxidation also removed the protein in wastewater and changed the main organic components of membrane fouling from microorganisms, protein, and polysaccharide to humic substances and polysaccharide. Furthermore, the electrophoretic force and acidic environment reduced the electrostatic repulsion of humic substances and made them tend to aggregate and form hydrophilic porous fouling structures, which obviously lowered filtration resistance and showed significant membrane fouling mitigation. Also, the electric field effectively enhanced the removal of target TrOCs through electrochemical oxidation and electric field force improving the elimination of TrOCs from 8.5% ~ 26.1% at 0 V to 35.9% ~ 84.8% at 3 V.

Geographical Distribution and Pattern of Pesticides in Danish Drinking Water 2002-2018: Reducing Data Complexity

Pesticides are a large and heterogenous group of chemicals with a complex geographic distribution in the environment. The purpose of this study was to explore the geographic distribution of pesticides in Danish drinking water and identify potential patterns in the grouping of pesticides. Our data included 899,169 analyses of 167 pesticides and metabolites, of which 55 were identified above the detection limit. Pesticide patterns were defined by (1) pesticide groups based on chemical structure and pesticide-metabolite relations and (2) an exploratory factor analysis identifying underlying patterns of related pesticides within waterworks. The geographic distribution was evaluated by mapping the pesticide categories for groups and factor components, namely those detected, quantified, above quality standards, and not analysed. We identified five and seven factor components for the periods 2002-2011 and 2012-2018, respectively. In total, 16 pesticide groups were identified, of which six were representative in space and time with regards to the number of waterworks and analyses, namely benzothiazinone, benzonitriles, organophosphates, phenoxy herbicides, triazines, and triazinones. Pesticide mapping identified areas where multiple pesticides were detected, indicating areas with a higher pesticide burden. The results contribute to a better understanding of the pesticide pattern in Danish drinking water and may contribute to exposure assessments for future epidemiological studies.

Degradation of pesticides diazinon and diazoxon by phosphotriesterase: insight into divergent mechanisms from QM/MM and MD simulations

Enzymatic hydrolysis by phosphotriesterase (PTE) is one of the most effective ways of degrading organophosphorus pesticides, but the catalytic efficiency depends on the structural features of substrates. Here the enzymatic degradation of diazinon (DIN) and diazoxon (DON), characterized by PS and PO, respectively, have been investigated by QM/MM calculations and MM MD simulations. Our calculations demonstrate that the hydrolysis of DON (with PO) is inevitably initiated by the nucleophilic attack of the bridging-OH^- on the phosphorus center, while for DIN (with PS), we proposed a new degradation mechanism, initiated by the nucleophilic attack of the Zn_α-bound water molecule, for its low-energy pathway. For both DIN and DON, the hydrolytic reaction is predicted to be the rate-limiting step, with energy barriers of 18.5 and 17.7 kcal mol^-1, respectively. The transportation of substrates to the active site, the release of the leaving group and the degraded product are generally verified to be favorable by MD simulations via umbrella sampling, both thermodynamically and dynamically. The side-chain residues Phe132, Leu271 and Tyr309 play the gate-switching role to manipulate substrate delivery and product release. In comparison with the DON-enzyme system, the degraded product of DIN is more easily released from the active site. These new findings will contribute to the comprehensive understanding of the enzymatic degradation of toxic organophosphorus compounds by PTE.

Effects of accumulated straw residues on sorption of pesticides and antibiotics in soils with maize straw return

Outspread straw return practice leads to accumulation of structurally diverse organic materials in soils, including raw straw and straw residues. This practice provides a supplementary source of organic sorbents for compounds released into soils. However, effects of accumulated straw materials on sorption of compounds in soils remain poorly understood. Here we report that straw materials accumulated in soils display changing chemical structure and properties during decomposition, the majority of which distribute in exponential growth or decay manners with decomposition extents of materials. Sorption of straw materials toward 40 commonly used pesticides and antibiotics takes a compromise of decreasing crystalline index and increasing water absorption capacity of the sorbent materials during decomposition. This tradeoff in sorption leads to case-specific sorption trends of organic compounds in soils with straw return practice, following a composite linear sorption model of mixed soils and straw materials. The predictive model shows that relatively hydrophobic, hydrogen bond acceptor-rich chemicals (about 22.5% of the 40 compounds) display decreasing sorption capacity in organic matter-rich and/or relatively acidic soils with straw return. This finding may contradict the notion that crop straw return usually increases sorption and decreases leaching of compounds in soils.

Identification of Pesticide Transformation Products in Surface Water Using Suspect Screening Combined with National Monitoring Data

Pesticides are widespread anthropogenic chemicals and well-known environmental contaminants of concern. Much less is known about transformation products (TPs) of pesticides and their presence in the environment. We developed a novel suspect screening approach for not well-explored pesticides (n = 16) and pesticide TPs (n = 242) by integrating knowledge from national monitoring with high-resolution mass spectrometry data. Weekly time-integrated samples were collected in two Swedish agricultural streams using the novel Time-Integrating, MicroFlow, In-line Extraction (TIMFIE) sampler. The integration of national monitoring data in the screening approach increased the number of prioritized compounds approximately twofold (from 23 to 42). Ultimately, 11 pesticide TPs were confirmed by reference standards and 12 TPs were considered tentatively identified with varying levels of confidence. Semiquantification of the newly confirmed TPs indicated higher concentrations than their corresponding parent pesticides in some cases, which highlights concerns related to (unknown) pesticide TPs in the environment. Some TPs were present in the environment without co-occurrence of their corresponding parent compounds, indicating higher persistency or mobility of the identified TPs. This study showcased the benefits of integrating monitoring knowledge in this type of studies, with advantages for suspect screening performance and the possibility to increase relevance of future monitoring programs.

Use of Plant Protection Products in Lombardy, Italy and the Health Risk for the Ingestion of Contaminated Water

Pesticides used to protect agricultural crops may contaminate groundwater. This work aimed to identify the pesticides used in Lombardy, Italy, in 2016, their concentration in the groundwater and the risk for health associated with the intake of drinkable water in the adult population. The risk was evaluated for the presence of single and multiple active substances in the groundwater, calculating the hazard quotient (HQ) and the hazard index (HI), respectively. Lombardy utilises an agricultural area of 980,112 h, which is mainly cultivated with cereals (74%). Approximately 2354 pesticides (about 1.3 × 10⁷ kg), containing 410 active substances (about 4.5 × 10⁶ kg) were sold. There were groundwater contamination measurements in 158 monitoring points, which were investigated twice a year for 31 active substances, and a total of 9152 determinations. Only 17 currently used active substance were measured in the groundwater, among which three belonged to the 10 best-sold pesticides. The exceedance of the environmental quality standard was observed for about 1.5% determinations. The intake of contaminated water in the adult population resulted in a HQ typically ranging between 10⁻³ and 10⁻⁴ and a HI of about 10⁻³. Although the number of pesticides sold in 2016 in Lombardy was big, only a small fraction of active substances was monitored in the groundwater. Considering these monitored substances, the intake of contaminated groundwater in the adult general population posed an irrelevant risk for health.

Side Effects of Pesticides and Metabolites in Groundwater: Impact on Denitrification

The impact of two pesticides (S-metolachlor and propiconazole) and their respective main metabolites (ESA-metolachlor and 1,2,4-triazole) on bacterial denitrification in groundwater was studied. For this, the denitrification activity and the bacterial diversity of a microbial community sampled from a nitrate-contaminated groundwater were monitored during 20 days in lab experiments in the presence or absence of pesticides or metabolites at 2 or 10 μg/L. The kinetics of nitrate reduction along with nitrite and N₂O production all suggested that S-metolachlor had no or only little impact, whereas its metabolite ESA-metolachlor inhibited denitrification by 65% at 10 μg/L. Propiconazole and 1,2,4-triazole also inhibited denitrification at both concentrations, but to a lesser extent (29–38%) than ESA-metolachlor. When inhibition occurred, pesticides affected the reduction of nitrate into nitrite step. However, no significant differences were detected on the abundance of nitrate reductase narG and napA genes, suggesting an impact of pesticides/metabolites at the protein level rather than on denitrifying bacteria abundance. 16S rRNA gene Illumina sequencing indicated no major modification of bacterial diversity in the presence or absence of pesticides/metabolites, except for ESA-metolachlor and propiconazole at 10 μg/L that tended to increase or decrease Shannon and InvSimpson indices, respectively. General growth parameters suggested no impact of pesticides, except for propiconazole at 10 μg/L that partially inhibited acetate uptake and induced a decrease in microbial biomass. In conclusion, pesticides and metabolites can have side effects at environmental concentrations on microbial denitrification in groundwater and may thus affect ecosystem services based on microbial activities.
