Abstract
Bee pollen (BP) is one of the richest known natural resources of micronutrients and bioactive phytochemicals. Some captivating bioactivities of BP compounds, although being largely investigated for the latter as individual molecules, remain very scarcely investigated or completely uninvestigated in bee pollen as a whole product. Among the most intriguing of these bioactivities, we identified ferroptosis as a major one. Ferroptosis, a recently discovered form of cell death (connecting oxidative stress and inflammation), is a complex pathophysiological process and one of the most crucial and perplexing events in current challenging human diseases such as cancer, neurodegeneration, and general aging diseases. Many BP compounds were found to intricately modulate ferroptosis depending on the cellular context by inducing this cell death mechanism in malignant cells and preventing it in non-malignant cells. Since research in both fields, i.e., BP and ferroptosis, is still recent, we deemed it necessary to undertake this review to figure out the extent of BP potential in modulating ferroptosis mechanisms. Our research proved that a wide range of BP compounds (polyphenols, phenolamides, carotenoids, vitamins, minerals, and others) substantially modulate diverse ferroptosis mechanisms. Accordingly, these phytochemicals and nutrients showed interesting potential in preclinical studies to lead to ferroptosis-mediated outcomes in important pathophysiological processes, including many aging-related disorders. One of the most paramount challenges that remain to be resolved is to determine how different BP compounds act on ferroptosis in different biological and pathophysiological contexts, either through synergistic or antagonistic behaviors. We hope that our current work constitutes a valuable incentive for future investigations in this promising and very relevant research avenue.

Abstract
Cellular senescence, a hallmark of aging, plays an important role in age-related conditions among older adults. Targeting senescent cells and its phenotype may provide a promising strategy to delay the onset or progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). In this review article, we investigated efficacy and safety of nutrition senotherapy in AD, with a focus on the role of polyphenols as current and potential nutrition senotherapeutic agents, as well as relevant dietary patterns. Promising results with neuroprotective effects of senotherapeutic agents such as quercetin, resveratrol, Epigallocatechin-gallate, curcumin and fisetin were reported from preclinical studies. However, in-human trials remain limited, and findings were inconclusive. In future, nutrition senotherapeutic agents should be studied both individually and within dietary patterns, through the perspective of cellular senescence and AD. Further studies are warranted to investigate bioavailability, dosing regimen, long term effects of nutrition senotherapy and provide better understanding of the underlying mechanisms. Collaboration between researchers needs to be established, and methodological limitations of current studies should be addressed.

Abstract
Senolytic treatment in aged mice clears senescent cell burden leading to functional improvements. However, less is known regarding the effects of these compounds when administered prior to significant senescent cell accumulation. From 4-13 months of age, C57BL/6 male and female mice received monthly oral dosing of either 100 mg/kg Fisetin or a 5 mg/kg Dasatinib (D) plus 50 mg/kg Quercetin (Q) cocktail. During treatment, several aspects of healthy aging were assayed including glucose metabolism using an insulin and glucose tolerance test, cognitive performance using Morris water maze and novel object recognition, and energy metabolism using indirect calorimetry. Afterwards, mice were euthanized for plasma, tissue specific markers of senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), and white adipose tissue accumulation (WAT). Sexually dimorphic treatment effects were observed. Fisetin treated male mice had reduced SASP, enhanced glucose and energy metabolism, improved cognitive performance, and increased mRNA expression of adiponectin receptor 1 and glucose transporter 4. D + Q treatment had minimal effects in male C57BL/6 mice, but was detrimental to females causing increased SASP expression along with accumulation of WAT depots. Reduced energy metabolism and cognitive performance were also noted. Fisetin treatment had no effect in female C57BL/6 mice potentially due to a slower rate of biological aging. In summary, the senolytic treatment in young adulthood, has beneficial, negligible, or detrimental effects in C57BL/6 mice dependent upon sex and treatment. These observations should serve as a note of caution in this rapidly evolving and expanding field of investigation. Male and female C57BL/6 mice were treated with once monthly oral doses of either Dasatinib (D) + Quercetin (Q) or Fisetin from 4-13 months of age. Males treated with Fisetin had reduced SASP markers (blue spheres) as well as improved metabolism (red flame) and cognition. Females treated with D + Q had increased adiposity and SASP markers (red spheres) along with decreased metabolism (blue flame) and cognitive performance. No effects were observed in females treated with Fisetin or males treated with D + Q.

Abstract
With population and economic development increasing worldwide, the public is increasingly concerned with the health benefits and nutritional properties of vegetable oils (VOs). In this review, the chemical composition and health-promoting benefits of 39 kinds of VOs were selected and summarized using Web of Science TM as the main bibliographic databases. The characteristic chemical compositions were analyzed from fatty acid composition, tocols, phytosterols, squalene, carotenoids, phenolics, and phospholipids. Health benefits including antioxidant activity, prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD), anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, anti-cancer, diabetes treatment, and kidney and liver protection were examined according to the key components in representative VOs. Every type of vegetable oil has shown its own unique chemical composition with significant variation in each key component and thereby illustrated their own specific advantages and health effects. Therefore, different types of VOs can be selected to meet individual needs accordingly. For example, to prevent CVD, more unsaturated fatty acids and phytosterols should be supplied by consuming pomegranate seed oil, flaxseed oil, or rice bran oil, while coconut oil or perilla seed oil have higher contents of total phenolics and might be better choices for diabetics. Several oils such as olive oil, corn oil, cress oil, and rice bran oil were recommended for their abundant nutritional ingredients, but the intake of only one type of vegetable oil might have drawbacks. This review increases the comprehensive understanding of the correlation between health effects and the characteristic composition of VOs, and provides future trends towards their utilization for the general public's nutrition, balanced diet, and as a reference for disease prevention. Nevertheless, some VOs are in the early stages of research and lack enough reliable data and long-term or large consumption information of the effect on the human body, therefore further investigations will be needed for their health benefits.

Abstract
The pathophysiological mechanisms of diabetic cardiomyopathy have been extensively studied, but there is still a lack of effective prevention and treatment methods. The ability of flavonoids to protect the heart from diabetic cardiomyopathy has been extensively described. In recent years, epigenetics has received increasing attention from scholars in exploring the etiology and treatment of diabetes and its complications. DNA methylation, histone modifications and non-coding RNAs play key functions in the development, maintenance and progression of diabetic cardiomyopathy. Hence, prevention or reversal of the epigenetic alterations that have occurred during the development of diabetic cardiomyopathy may alleviate the personal and social burden of the disease. Flavonoids can be used as natural epigenetic modulators in alternative therapies for diabetic cardiomyopathy. In this review, we discuss the epigenetic effects of different flavonoid subtypes in diabetic cardiomyopathy and summarize the evidence from preclinical and clinical studies that already exist. However, limited research is available on the potential beneficial effects of flavonoids on the epigenetics of diabetic cardiomyopathy. In the future, clinical trials in which different flavonoids exert their antidiabetic and cardioprotective effects through various epigenetic mechanisms should be further explored.

Abstract
We investigated the countermeasure efficacy of apigenin (AP), given as a diet supplement, for radiation-induced damage in the hematopoietic tissues collected on day 7 after a total-body exposure of male C57BL/6J mice to 0 or 0.5 Gy of 260 MeV/n silicon (28Si) ions. We gave food with AP at the concentration of 20 mg/kg body weight (bw) (AP20) or without AP (AP0) to mice before and after irradiation. There were four groups of mice (six mice in each): Group 1- Control, i.e. No Radiation (0 Gy) with AP0; Group 2 - Radiation (0.5 Gy) with AP0; Group 3 - No Radiation (0 Gy) with AP20; and Group 4 - Radiation (0.5 Gy) with AP20. The complete blood count (CBC) and differential blood count were performed for each mouse. In the same mouse, an anti-clastogenic activity of AP was evaluated using the in vivo blood-erythrocyte micronucleus (MN) assay. Further in each mouse, bone marrow (BM) cells were collected and used for measuring the levels of activated nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB), and pro-inflammatory cytokines (i.e. tumor necrotic factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin-1α (IL-1α), IL-1 beta (IL-1β), and IL-6). We used the colony-forming unit assay (CFU-A) as a tool to study the countermeasure efficacy of AP against the harmful effects of 28Si ions on the proliferation of the hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs). Our results showed that AP is highly effective not only in the prevention of leukopenia and thrombocytopenia but also in the enhancement of erythropoiesis and the proliferation of HSPCs. We also observed the potent anti-clastogenic activity of AP given to mice as a diet supplement. Further, we found that AP is very effective in the suppression of activated NF-κB and pro-inflammatory cytokines, suggesting that AP given as a diet supplement protects mice from 28Si-ion-induced damage in the hematopoietic tissues of irradiated male C57BL/6J mice via its anti-inflammation activity.

Abstract
In the current study, the prooxidant activities of (-)-epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) and chlorogenic acid (CGA) were systematically compared both in multiple in vitro models and in mice. At equimolar concentrations in vitro and in vivo, EGCG displayed powerful prooxidant effects though CGA exhibited none. In vitro, though CGA and EGCG synergistically produced hydrogen peroxide, CGA was able to scavenge hydroxyl radicals generated by EGCG/copper. Consistent with the selective modulation of reactive oxygen species produced from EGCG, CGA lowered hepatotoxicity but did not perturb hepatic AMPK activation nor the increase of hepatic Nrf2-associated proteins induced by high-dose EGCG. CGA, along with low-dose EGCG, synergistically activated hepatic AMPK and increased hepatic Nrf2-associated proteins without causing toxicity in mice. This proof-of-principle study suggests that polyphenols with potent prooxidant activities (e.g., EGCG) together with antioxidant polyphenols with noticeably low prooxidant activities (e.g., CGA) may yield health benefits with a low risk of side effects.

Abstract
Quercetin is the most abundant polyphenolic flavonoid (flavonol subclass) in vegetal foods and medicinal plants. This dietary chemopreventive agent has drawn significant interest for its multiple beneficial health effects ("polypharmacology") largely associated with the well-documented antioxidant properties. However, controversies exist in the literature due to its dual anti-/pro-oxidant character, poor stability/bioavailability but multifaceted bioactivities, leaving much confusion as to its exact roles in vivo. Increasing evidence indicates that a prior oxidation of quercetin to generate an array of chemical diverse products with redox-active/electrophilic moieties is emerging as a new linkage to its versatile actions. The present review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the oxidative conversion of quercetin by systematically analyzing the current quercetin-related knowledge, with a particular focus on the complete spectrum of metabolite products, the enzymes involved in the catabolism and the underlying molecular mechanisms. Herein we review and compare the oxidation pathways, protein structures and catalytic patterns of the related metalloenzymes (phenol oxidases, heme enzymes and specially quercetinases), aiming for a deeper mechanistic understanding of the unusual biotransformation behaviors of quercetin and its seemingly controversial biological functions.

Abstract
The process of cellular senescence is rapidly emerging as a modulator of organismal aging and disease. Targeting the development and removal of senescent cells is considered a viable approach to achieving improved organismal healthspan and lifespan. Nutrition and health are intimately linked and an appropriate dietary regimen can greatly impact organismal response to stress and diseases including during aging. With a renewed focus on cellular senescence, emerging studies demonstrate that both primary and secondary nutritional elements such as carbohydrates, proteins, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, polyphenols, and probiotics can influence multiple aspects of cellular senescence. The present review describes the recent molecular aspects of cellular senescence-mediated understanding of aging and then studies available evidence of the cellular senescence modulatory attributes of major and minor dietary elements. Underlying pathways and future research directions are deliberated to promote a nutrition-centric approach for targeting cellular senescence and thus improving human health and longevity.

Abstract
22 edible oils can be discriminated based on tocopherol and phytosterol contents. In vitro antioxidant activity is correlated to polyphenol, tocopherol, and squalene. Oxidative and heat stress resistance is correlated to tocopherol and phytosterol. In vivo antioxidant activity is correlated to polyphenol, squalene, MUFA and PUFA.
In the last decade, with a growing emphasis on healthy diets, functional edible oils with high nutritional quality are becoming increasingly popular around the world. This study systematically compared the chemical composition and protective effect of 22 vegetable oils using multivariate chemometric tools. The results showed that the fatty acid composition and minor compounds were extremely variable among tested oils. Hierarchical cluster and principal component analysis discriminated these oils according to the tocopherol and phytosterol contents. The Pearson’s correlation analysis indicated that in vitro radical scavenging capacity was significantly correlated to polyphenol, tocopherol, and squalene. Additionally, the ameliorate effects on the heat and oxidative stress, ROS contents, and antioxidant enzyme activities were measured in Caenorhabditis elegans. The results showed that the antioxidant activity and stress resistance were positively correlated to polyphenol, tocopherol, phytosterol, MUFA, and PUFA, respectively. This study may offer an insight into oil discrimination and functional oil exploitation.

Abstract
Simple Summary Cellular senescence may contribute to aging and age-related diseases, and the elimination of senescent cells is considered a promising anti-aging strategy. Drug-induced senescence in cancer cells during chemotherapy may also promote a number of adverse effects. Thus, in the present study, the usefulness of three quercetin derivatives as senolytic agents was studied upon stimulation of senescence program in breast cancer cells. We have shown that quercetin derivative with blocked hydroxy groups (QD3) sensitized etoposide-induced senescent breast cancer cells to apoptotic cell death that was accompanied by a decrease in proinflammatory and HSP70-based responses. We suggest that these prosenescent and senolytic activities can be combined to design a novel anti-cancer strategy, at least, against breast cancer cells. Abstract Drug-induced senescence program may be activated both in normal and cancer cells as a consequence of chemotherapeutic treatment, leading to some adverse side effects such as senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), secondary senescence, and cancer promotion. Targeted elimination of senescent cells can be achieved by drugs with senolytic activity (senolytics), for example, the plant-derived natural compound quercetin, especially when co-treated with kinase inhibitor dasatinib. In the present study, three quercetin derivatives were synthesized and tested for improved senolytic action against etoposide-induced senescent human normal mammary epithelial cells and triple-negative breast cancer cells in vitro. Transformation of catechol moiety into diphenylmethylene ketal and addition of three acetyl groups to the quercetin molecule (QD3 derivative) promoted the clearance of senescent cancer cells as judged by increased apoptosis compared to etoposide-treated cells. A QD3-mediated senolytic effect was accompanied by decreased SA-beta galactosidase activity and the levels of p27, IL-1β, IL-8, and HSP70 in cancer cells. Similar effects were not observed in senescent normal cells. In conclusion, a novel senolytic agent QD3 was described as acting against etoposide-induced senescent breast cancer cells in vitro. Thus, a new one-two punch anti-cancer strategy based on combined action of a pro-senescence anti-cancer drug and a senolytic agent is proposed.

Abstract
Telomeres are localized at the end of chromosomes to provide genome stability; however, the telomere length tends to be shortened with each cell division inducing a progressive telomere shortening (TS). In addition to age, other factors, such as exposure to pollutants, diet, stress, and disruptions in the shelterin protein complex or genes associated with telomerase induce TS. This phenomenon favors cellular senescence and genotoxic stress, which increases the risk of the development and progression of lung diseases such as idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, SARS-CoV-2 infection, and lung cancer. In an infectious environment, immune cells that exhibit TS are associated with severe lymphopenia and death, whereas in a noninfectious context, naïve T cells that exhibit TS are related to cancer progression and enhanced inflammatory processes. In this review, we discuss how TS modifies the function of the immune system cells, making them inefficient in maintaining homeostasis in the lung. Finally, we discuss the advances in drug and gene therapy for lung diseases where TS could be used as a target for future treatments.
