Abstract
We designed and characterized chitosan-caseinate fibers processed through wet spinning for biomedical applications such as drug delivery from knitted medical devices. Sodium caseinate was either incorporated directly into the chitosan dope or allowed to diffuse into the chitosan hydrogel from a coagulation bath containing sodium caseinate and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The latter route, where caseinate was incorporated in the neutralization bath, produced fibers with better mechanical properties for textile applications than those formed by the chitosan-caseinate mixed collodion route. The latter processing method consists of enriching a pre-formed chitosan hydrogel with caseinate, preserving the structure of the semicrystalline hydrogel without drastically affecting interactions involved in the chitosan self-assembly. Thus, dried fibers, after coagulation in a NaOH/sodium caseinate aqueous bath, exhibited preserved ultimate mechanical properties. The crystallinity ratio of chitosan was not significantly impacted by the presence of caseinate. However, when caseinate was incorporated into the chitosan dope, chitosan-caseinate fibers exhibited lower ultimate mechanical properties, possibly due to a lower entanglement density in the amorphous phase of the chitosan matrix. A standpoint is to optimize the chitosan-caseinate composition ratio and processing route to find a good compromise between the preservation of fiber mechanical properties and appropriate fiber composition for potential application in drug release.

Abstract
The preparation of nanoparticles (NPs) based on hemoglobin (Hb) with a fully biocompatible methodology is presented. The spontaneous formation of electrostatic complexes of Hb with chondroitin sulfate (CS) at pH 4 in the polysaccharide/protein mass ratio regime where charge neutrality is met leads to spherical nanostructures with monomodal hydrodynamic radii distribution in the range of 50-100 nm. The integrity of the electrostatic complexes is disturbed at pH 7 as the net electric charge of Hb is very low. Treating the NPs at mildly elevated temperature stabilizes them against the pH increase taking advantage of Hb's ability of unfolding and self-associating upon thermal treatment. The NPs surface charge is pH-tunable and changes from positive to strongly negative upon pH increase to 7 proving the presence of negative surface patches of Hb and CS segments in their exterior. The α-helix content of Hb does not change significantly by thermal treatment. The NPs are found to bind the bioactive compounds curcumin and β-carotene and are stable in solutions with high salt content. This investigation introduces a straightforward method to formulate Hb in NPs with possibilities in the nanodelivery of nutrients and drugs.

Abstract
Licorice was widely used in food and herbal medicine. In its extract industry, a substantial amount of licorice protein was produced and discarded as waste. Herein, we extracted Licorice Protein Isolate (LPI) and explored its potential as a curcumin nanocarrier. Using a pH-driven method, we fabricated LPI-curcumin nanoparticles with diameters ranging from 129.30 ± 3.21 nm to 75.03 ± 1.19 nm, depending on the LPI/curcumin molar ratio. The formation of LPI-curcumin nanoparticles was primarily driven by hydrophobic interactions, with curcumin entrapped in LPI being in an amorphous form. These nanoparticles significantly enhanced curcumin properties in terms of solubility, photochemical stability, and stability under varying pH, storage, and physiological conditions. Moreover, the loaded curcumin exhibited a 2.58-fold increase in cellular antioxidant activity on RAW 264.7 cells and a 1.86-fold increase in antitumor activity against HepG2 cells compared to its free form. These findings suggested that LPI could potentially serve as a promising novel delivery material.

Abstract
Dialdehyde carbohydrates (DCs) have found applications in a wide range of biomedical field due to their great versatility, biocompatibility/biodegradability, biological properties, and controllable chemical/physical characteristics. The presence of dialdehyde groups in carbohydrate structure allows cross-linking of DCs to form versatile architectures serving as interesting matrices for biomedical applications (e.g., drug delivery, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine). Recently, DCs have noticeably contributed to the development of diverse physical forms of advanced functional biomaterials i.e., bulk architectures (hydrogels, films/coatings, or scaffolds) and nano/-micro formulations. We underline here the current scientific knowledge on DCs, and demonstrate their potential and newly developed biomedical applications. Specifically, an update on the synthesis approach and functional/bioactive attributes is provided, and the selected in vitro/in vivo studies are reviewed comprehensively as examples of the latest progress in the field. Moreover, safety concerns, challenges, and perspectives towards the application of DCs are deliberated.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Abnormally regulated long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) functions in cancer emphasize their potential to serve as potential targets for cancer therapeutic intervention. LncRNA ASBEL has been identified as oncogene and an anti-sense transcript of tumor-suppressor gene of BTG3 in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). RESULTS Herein, multicomponent self-assembled polyelectrolyte nanocomplexes (CANPs) based on the polyelectrolytes of bioactive hyaluronic acid (HA) and chitosan hydrochloride (CS) were designed and prepared for the collaborative modulation of oncogenic lncRNA ASBEL with antago3, an oligonucleotide antagonist targeting lncRNA ASBEL and hydrophobic curcumin (Cur) co-delivery for synergetic TNBC therapy. Antago3 and Cur co-incorporated CANPs were achieved via a one-step assembling strategy with the cooperation of noncovalent electrostatic interactions, hydrogen-bonding, and hydrophobic interactions. Moreover, the multicomponent assembled CANPs were ulteriorly decorated with a near-infrared fluorescence (NIRF) Cy-5.5 dye (FCANPs) for synchronous NIRF imaging and therapy monitoring performance. Resultantly, MDA-MB-231 cells proliferation, migration, and invasion were efficiently inhibited, and the highest apoptosis ratio was induced by FCANPs with coordination patterns. At the molecular level, effective regulation of lncRNA ASBEL/BTG3 and synchronous regulation of Bcl-2 and c-Met pathways could be observed. CONCLUSION As expected, systemic administration of FCANPs resulted in targeted and preferential accumulation of near-infrared fluorescence signal and Cur in the tumor tissue. More attractively, systemic FCANPs-mediated collaborative modulating lncRNA ASBEL/BTG3 and Cur co-delivery significantly suppressed the MDA-MB-231 xenograft tumor growth, inhibited metastasis and extended survival rate with negligible systemic toxicity. Our present study represented an effective approach to developing a promising theranostic platform for combating TNBC in a combined therapy pattern.

Abstract
In this study, the extra-fine dry powder inhalers (DPIs) with chitosan (CS) as carrier were successfully prepared by ionic gel method combined with spray drying technique for deep pulmonary drug delivery of Cyclosporine A (CsA), using sodium hyaluronate (SHA) and sodium polyglutamate (SPGA) as polyanions. The CsA-loaded DPIs of CS-SHA-CsA and CS-SPGA-CsA were spherical particles with wrinkles on the surface, which were more conducive to improving the aerosol properties. The aerodynamic evaluation of CS-SHA-CsA and CS-SPGA-CsA showed that the fine particle fraction (FPF) reached up to 79.22 ± 2.12% and 81.55 ± 0.43%, while the emitted fraction (EF) reached 77.15 ± 1.46% and 78.29 ± 2.10%. In addition, the mass median aerodynamic diameter (MMAD) was calculated as 1.58 ± 0.04 μm and 1.94 ± 0.02 μm for CS-SHA-CsA and CS-SPGA-CsA, indicating that they were all extra-fine particles (d < 2 μm). These in vitro aerodynamic results showed that CS-SHA-CsA and CS-SPGA-CsA could reach the smaller airways, further improving therapeutic efficiency. The cell viability on A549 cell line results showed that CS-SHA-CsA and CS-SPGA-CsA were safe to deliver CsA to lungs. The in vivo pharmacokinetics consequence proved that inhalation administration of CS-SHA-CsA and CS-SPGA-CsA could significantly improve the bioavailability of CsA in vivo compared with oral administration of Neoral®, effectively reducing the risk of a series of adverse effects caused by systemic overexposure. In addition, the safety and compatibility of DPIs using SHA, SPGA, and CS as carriers for pulmonary drug delivery was verified by in vivo repeated dose inhalation toxicity. From these findings, the extra-fine DPIs with CS as carrier could be a viable delivery option for the deep pulmonary drug delivery of CsA relative to orally administered drug.

Abstract
Polysaccharide-based nanoparticles formed by the polyelectrolyte complexation between chitosan (CS) and flaxseed gum (FG) was developed in this work, and it was further used as a carrier for bighead carp peptide (BCP) delivery. The CS molecular weight (MW) of 50 kDa and CS/FG mass ratio of 1:2 at pH 3.5 were optimal conditions for the NP preparation, with the minimum particle size (∼155.1 nm) and the maximum BCP encapsulation efficiency (60.3 %). The BCP-loaded CS/FG NPs exhibited the smallest particle size (175.8 nm). Both CS/FG NPs and CS/FG-BCP NPs exhibited roughly uniform spherical shape. FT-IR spectra confirmed the existence of hydrogen bonds and electrostatic interactions in the nanoparticles. The BCP-loaded NPs displayed a higher thermal stability than BCP. Moreover, the release of BCP was controllable and dose-dependent, following a first-order kinetics model. These findings suggested that our CS/FG NPs are a promising carrier for bioactive peptide delivery.

Abstract
Improving the utilization rate of loaded-drugs is of huge importance for generating chitosan-based (CS) micro-carriers. This study aims to fabricate a novel CS microspheres co-delivered curcumin (Cur) and gallic acid (Ga) to assess drug loading and release kinetics, the blood compatibility and anti-osteosarcoma properties. The present study observes the interaction between CS and Cur/Ga molecules and estimates the change in crystallinity and loading and release rate. In addition, blood compatibility and cytotoxicity of such microspheres are also evaluated. Cur-Ga-CS microspheres present high entrapment rate of (55.84 ± 0.34) % for Ga and (42.68 ± 0.11) % for Cur, possibly attributed to surface positive charge (21.76 ± 2.46) mV. Strikingly, Cur-Ga-CS microspheres exhibit slowly sustainable release for almost 7 days in physiological buffer. Importantly, these microspheres possess negligibly toxic to blood and normal BMSC cells, but strong anti-osteosarcoma effect on U2OS cells. Overall, Cur-Ga-CS microspheres are promising to become a novel anti-osteosarcoma agent or sustainable delivery carrier in biomedical applications.

Abstract
In this study, we used succinic anhydride (SA) acylation and dextran (DX) glycosylation modified soybean isolate protein (SPI) to develop self-assembled SPI-SA-DX adduct-based nanogels. Degree of modification, SDS-PAGE, and FT-IR studies showed that the amino group of the SPI was replaced by hydrophilic dextran and succinic acid carboxyl groups. Dextran chain and anhydride group attachment to the soybean protein surface enhanced hydrophilicity and spatial site blocking. Modification-induced protein structure unfolding, free sulfhydryl groups to be converted to disulfide bonds, and reduced surface hydrophobicity (H0). H0 was lowest at 33,750 ± 1008.29 when SA content = 10 % protein content (SPI-SA3-DX). The nanometer gel based on SPI-SA3-DX had the maximum turbidity and clear transparent solution without precipitation. Its particle size and polymer dispersibility index (PDI) were also the smallest, with values of (106.87 ± 4.51) nm and 0.21 ± 0.009, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy showed that nanogels had subspherical shell-core structures. Nanogels were stable under different pH, ionic strength, high temperature, and storage conditions.

Abstract
This study investigated the impact of ionic strength and lipophilicity of bioactive compounds on their interaction with the alkaline soluble pea glutelin fraction (ASF) using the fluorescence quenching technique. A Stern-Volmer quenching constant, KD, of 8.9 ± 0.10, 5.3 ± 0.06, 4.0 ± 0.01, 1.1 ± 0.00, 0.9 ± 0.02, and 0.1 ± 0.00 (×104 M-1) was observed for curcumin-ASF (CuASF), astaxanthin-ASF (AsASF), cholecalciferol-ASF (ChASF), β-carotene-ASF (βCaASF), coenzyme Q10-ASF (Q10ASF), and β-sitosterol-ASF (βSiASF) complexes, respectively. An increase in ionic strength did not significantly change KD, the effective quenching constant K, and the bimolecular quenching rate constant KQ. However, it changed the mode of interaction of the ASF with cholecalciferol, β-carotene, coenzyme Q10, and β-sitosterol from static to static-dynamic quenching. Transmission electron microscopy showed that the morphology formed with protein (spherical nanocomplexes, microaggregates, or fiber-like particles) differed among the compounds. The favorable binding of CuASF, AsASF, ChASF, and βCaASF complexes provides stable matrices for formulating protein-based delivery systems for lipophilic nutraceuticals.

Abstract
Natural ingredients are gaining increasing attention from manufacturers following consumers’ concerns about the excessive use of synthetic ingredients. However, the use of natural extracts or molecules to achieve desirable qualities throughout the shelf life of foodstuff and, upon consumption, in the relevant biological environment is severely limited by their poor performance, especially with respect to solubility, stability against environmental conditions during product manufacturing, storage, and bioavailability upon consumption. Nanoencapsulation can be seen as an attractive approach with which to overcome these challenges. Among the different nanoencapsulation systems, lipids and biopolymer-based nanocarriers have emerged as the most effective ones because of their intrinsic low toxicity following their formulation with biocompatible and biodegradable materials. The present review aims to provide a survey of the recent advances in nanoscale carriers, formulated with biopolymers or lipids, for the encapsulation of natural compounds and plant extracts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Protein gels are used for different purposes, such as providing good texture, serving as fat replacers, and enhancing the nutritional and functional characteristics of foods. They can also deliver controlled release agents for sensitive drugs. The objective of this study was to investigate the impact of κ-carrageenan (kcr) concentration (0, 1.5, 3, and 4.5 mg g-1 ) on the morphological and physicochemical properties and release behavior of glucono-δ-lactone (GDL)-induced pinto bean protein aggregate (PBA) gels. RESULTS When κ-carrageenan concentration increased from 0 to 1.5 and 3 mg.g-1 , the firmness of the samples increased significantly, by 2.04 and 3.7 fold, respectively (P < 0.05). A compact and homogenous network with considerable strength and maximum water-holding capacity (97.52 ± 1.17%) was obtained with the addition of 3 mg g-1 κ-carrageenan to the gel system. Further increasing the κ-carrageenan concentration to 4.5 mg g-1 produced a coarse gel structure with higher storage modulus (G'), firmness (6.30-fold), thermal stability, and entrapment efficiency (85.6%). Depending on the κ-carrageenan concentration, various microstructures from protein continuous phase to κ-carrageenan continuous phase were observed. The release test indicated that 70.25% of the loaded curcumin was released in the simulated gastrointestinal tract for pure PBA gels. In contrast, for binary gels containing 4.5 mg g-1 κ-carrageenan, curcumin was protected in the upper gastrointestinal tract, and 64.45% of loaded curcumin was delivered to the colon. CONCLUSION Our study showed that κ-carrageenan/PBA gels had high entrapment efficiency and could protect curcumin in the upper gastrointestinal tract. The hydrogels are therefore very valuable for colon-targeting delivery purposes. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract
Bladder cancer (BC) is the most frequently occurring cancer of the urinary system, with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) accounting for 75-85% of all the bladder cancers. Patients with NMIBC have a good survival rate but are at high risk for tumor recurrence and disease progression. Intravesical instillation of antitumor agents is the standard treatment for NMIBC following transurethral resection of bladder tumors. Chemotherapeutic drugs are broadly employed for bladder cancer treatment, but have limited efficacy due to chemo-resistance and systemic toxicity. Additionally, the periodic voiding of bladder and low permeability of the bladder urothelium impair the retention of drugs, resulting in a weak antitumoral response. Chitosan is a non-toxic and biocompatible polymer which enables better penetration of specific drugs to the deeper cell layers of the bladder as a consequence of temporarily abolishing the barrier function of urothelium, thus offering multifaceted biomedical applications in urinary bladder epithelial. Nowadays, the rapid development of nanoparticles significantly improves the tumor therapy with enhanced drug transport. This review presents an overview on the state of chitosan-based nanoparticles in the field of intravesical bladder cancer treatment.

Abstract
Single protein [whey protein isolate (WPI) or succinylated whey protein isolate (SWPI)] and composite particles of proteins with chitosan (CS) were tested for their ability to encapsulate and protect curcumin (CUR). Combining protein and CS resulted in changes in zeta-potential and surface hydrophobicity, particularly in the SWPI-H (high degree of succinylation, 90 %) and CS composite particle (H-CS). Furthermore, the secondary and tertiary structures were dramatically altered using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), circular dichroism (CD), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM) analyses revealed that H-CS exhibited a soft core-rigid shell morphology due to electrostatic interactions, hydrophobic interactions, and H-bond interactions. Fluorescence quenching results demonstrated that H-CS had a higher binding constant (K, 1.69 ×104 M-1) and encapsulation effectiveness (EE, 88.3 %) of CUR. Because of increased binding sites and steric hindrance, CUR was stabilized more effectively in H-CS in photostability and thermostability tests,. These results show that SWPI-CS composite particles can be utilized to build a protection system for water-insoluble nutritional supplements.

The potential utilization value of Camellia seed cake was explored by extracting albumin (CSCA) to develop nanoparticles for lutein delivery. First, thermal property and amphiphilicity of CSCA were evaluated to guide nanoparticle preparation. Next, CSCA nanoparticles modified with chitosan (CS) were prepared through a thermally induced self-assembly method derived by electrostatic attraction and hydrophobic interaction. The optimized nanoparticles were prepared from CSCA:CS at a mass ratio of 2:1 with pH of 4.5, and an incubation temperature and time of 80 ℃ and 10 min, respectively. The nanoparticles had the highest effective loading capacity for lutein at 5.89 ± 0.78%, and the corresponding encapsulation efficiency was 43.82 ± 5.69%. The storage stability of lutein was improved by nanoparticle loading, and the bioaccessibility of lutein in simulated intestinal digestion increased from 26.8 ± 4.4% to 57.3 ± 9.6% after encapsulation into nanoparticles. These findings may facilitate the development of new and sustainable proteins from plant waste for delivery system applications.

Abstract
Curcumin-loaded native and succinylated pea protein nanoparticles, as well as zwitterionic giant unilamellar vesicles were used in this study as model bioactive compound loaded-nanoparticles and biomembranes, respectively, to assess bio-nano interactions. Curcumin-loaded native protein-chitosan and succinylated protein-chitosan complexes, as well as native protein-chitosan and succinylated protein-chitosan hollow, induced leakage of the calcein encapsulated in the giant unilamellar vesicles. The leakage was more pronounced with hollow protein-chitosan complexes. However, curcumin-loaded native protein and curcumin-loaded succinylated protein nanoparticles induced calcein fluorescence quenching. Dynamic light scattering measurements showed that the interaction of curcumin-loaded native protein, curcumin-loaded succinylated protein, native protein-chitosan, and succinylated protein-chitosan complexes with the giant unilamellar vesicles caused a major reduction in the size of the lipid vesicles. Confocal and widefield fluorescence microscopy showed rupturing of the unilamellar vesicles after treatment with native pea protein-chitosan and succinylated pea protein-chitosan complexes. The nature of interaction between the curcumin-loaded protein nanoparticles and the biomembranes, at the bio-nano interface, is influenced by the encapsulated curcumin. Findings from this study showed that, as the protein plays a crucial role in stabilizing the bioactive compound from chemical and photodegradation, the encapsulated nutraceutical stabilizes the protein nanoparticle to reduce its interaction with biomembranes.

Abstract
Lutein is a carotenoid with several beneficial functions, but its poor water solubility, chemical instability, and low bioavailability limits its application. To overcome these shortcomings, self-assembly composite nanoparticles from Stauntonia brachyanthera seed albumin (SBSA), gum Arabic (GA), and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) were developed for lutein encapsulation. Firstly, SBSA was extracted from seeds and its physicochemical properties were evaluated. Followingly, the nanoparticles were prepared with SBSA through a heat induced self-assembly method which were modified by GA and CMC. The nanoparticles exhibited good storage, pH, and salt stability. Hydrogen bonds, hydrophobic interactions, and electrostatic interactions were proved to derive the formation of nanoparticles. The maximum effective loading capacity (LC) of the lutein in nanoparticles was 0.92 ± 0.01% with an encapsulation efficiency (EE) at 83.95 ± 0.98%. Heat stability and storage stability of lutein were significantly enhanced after encapsulation into nanoparticles. In addition, the bioaccessibility of lutein increased from 17.50 ± 2.60% to 46.80 ± 4.70% after encapsulation into nanoparticles.

Abstract
The accumulation of rabbit muscle glycogen phosphorylase b (RMGPb) in electrostatic complexes with the cationic polyelectrolyte poly 2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate in its quenched form (QPDMAEMA) was studied in two buffer solutions. In the N-bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-2-aminoethanesulfonic acid (BES) buffer, large complexes of RMGPb-QPDMAEMA were formed which adopted smaller sizes as QPDMAEMA concentration increased. However, in N-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazine-N'-(2-ethanesulfonic acid) (HEPES) buffer, the hydrodynamic radius of the formed complexes gradually increased as the polymer concentration increased. Zeta potential measurements (ζp) showed that RMGPb significantly changed the ζp of the QPDMAEMA aggregates. Fluorescence studies showed that the interaction between RMGPb and QPDMAEAMA was enhanced as polymer concentration increased. Specifically, 8-anilinonaphthalene-1-sulfonic acid (ANS) fluorescence indicated that in the BES buffer the aggregates became denser as more QPDMAEMA was added, while in the HEPES buffer the density of the formed structures decreased. RMGPb's secondary structure was examined by Attenuated Total Reflection - Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) and Circular Dichroism (CD) showing that QPDMAEMA interaction with RMGPb does not induce any changes to the secondary structure of the enzyme. These observations suggest that cationic polyelectrolytes may be utilized for the formulation of RMGPb in multifunctional nanostructures and be further exploited in innovative biotechnology applications and bioinspired materials development.

Abstract
Hydrophobic cellulose laurate (CL) with high degree of substitution has been successfully synthesized. The mechanical property, water-resistance, antimicrobial activity, barrier properties and food decontamination of cellulose-laurate-curcumin films (CL-Cux, x = 0.1, 0.5, and 1) were investigated. The results showed that the mechanical properties of CL-Cux hardly change after soaking in water for 24 h, probably due to the strong hydrophobicity of cellulose laurate. CL-Cu1 represented a good photoinduced antibacterial effect against S. aureus. After irradiation of white light at 60 mW·cm-2 for 20 min, the inhibition efficiency reached to 95 ± 2.02%, probably owing to the generated active 1O2. In comparison with CL-Cu1 stored in natural light, the bacteriostatic effect of CL-Cu1 in dark storage was better, and the inhibition rate of CL-Cu1 remained 80 ± 1.22 at 60th day. The stabler excited state of curcumin in hydrophobic cellulose laurate was probably assigned to inhibition of tautomerism or conformational transition, which was beneficial to the generation of singlet oxygen. CL-Cu1 can significantly inhibit the growth of TVBN and TVC values of chilled meat upon white light irradiation, indicating the potential application of cellulose-laurate-curcumin films in food decontamination.

Abstract
Nanoscale polyelectrolyte complex materials have been extensively investigated for their promising application in protocell, drug carriers, imaging, and catalysis. However, the conventional preparation approach involving positive and negative polyelectrolytes leads to large size, wide size distribution, instability, and aggregation due to the nonhomogeneous mixing process. Herein, we employ reactive flash nanoprecipitation (RFNP) to control the mixing and preparation of the nanoscale polyelectrolyte complex. With RFNP, homogeneous mixing complexation between oppositely charged chitosan derivatives could be achieved, resulting in stable nanoscale complexes (NCs) with controllable size and narrow size distribution. The smallest size of NCs is found at specific pH due to the maximum attraction of positive and negative molecules of chitosan. The size can be modulated by altering the volumetric flow rates of inlet streams, concentration, and charge molar ratio of two oppositely charged chitosan derivatives. The charge molar ratio is also tuned to create NCs with positive and negative shells. There is no significant variation in the size of NCs produced at different intervals of time. This method allows continuous and tunable NC production and could have the potential for fast, practical translation.

Abstract
Novel mitochondria targeting nanocarriers were prepared using triphenylphosphonium bromide (TPP)-modified whey protein isolate (WPI)-dextran (DX) conjugates by self-assembly method for astaxanthin mitochondria targeting delivery. The nanocarriers of astaxanthin-loaded WPI-DX and astaxanthin-loaded TPP-WPI-DX were 135.26 and 193.64 nm, respectively, which exhibited a spherical structure and good dispersibility. The mitochondria targeting nanocarriers had good stability in the stimulated blood fluid. In vitro experiments indicated that the TPP-modified nanocarriers could effectively realize lysosomes escape, and specifically accumulate in the cell mitochondria. Simultaneously, the astaxanthin-loaded nanocarriers could significantly reduce reactive oxygen species generation produced from hydrogen peroxide, protect the normal levels of the mitochondrial membrane potential, and dramatically promote the vitality of leukemia cells in mouse macrophage (RAW 264.7) cells. The present study highlights the promising application of mitochondria targeting nanocarriers for enhanced delivery of astaxanthin.

Abstract
Carbohydrate-based micro/nanoparticles have gained significant attention for various biomedical applications such as targeted/triggered/controlled drug delivery, bioimaging, biosensing, etc., because of their prominent characteristics like biocompatibility, biodegradability, hydrophilicity, and nontoxicity as well as nonimmunogenicity. Most importantly, the ability of the nanoparticles to recognize specific cell sites by targeting cell surface receptors makes them a promising candidate for designing a targeted drug delivery system. These particles may either comprise polysaccharides/glycopolymers or be integrated with various polymeric/inorganic nanoparticles such as gold, silver, silica, iron, etc., to reduce the toxicity of the inorganic nanoparticles and thus facilitate their cellular insertion. Various synthetic methods have been developed to fabricate carbohydrate-based or carbohydrate-conjugated inorganic/polymeric nanoparticles. In this review, we have highlighted the recently developed synthetic approaches to afford carbohydrate-based particles along with their significance in various biomedical applications.

Abstract
Polyvinyl acetate (PVAc) and curcumin (Cu) were utilized for preparing new protecting PVAc-Cu x (x = 1, 5 and 10) coatings exerting antimicrobial photodynamic activity upon white light irradiation. Toward Salmonella typhimurium or Staphylococcus aureus, the killing efficiency represented the dependence on the Cu concentration and irradiation intensity. Toward S. aureus, the killing efficiency of PVAc-Cu 10 coating reached 93% at an energy density of 72 J/cm2. With the change in storage time of coating, the results implied significant stability of photosterilization efficiency within 60 days. Compared with the control experiment, lower total viable counts (TVCs) and total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) values in fresh meat packaged by PVDC films with PVAc-Cu 10 coatings during storage at 4 °C demonstrated the practicability of the PVAc-Cu x coatings in decontaminating fresh pork. Abstract
The present work aims to encapsulate goby fish protein hydrolysate (GPH), endowed with antioxidant activity, through ionic gelation process using blue crab chitosan (CH) and tripolyphosphate anions and to evaluate the structural, thermal and antioxidant properties of the elaborated microparticles (MPs). The GPH-loaded MPs present spherical shape as seen by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images and positive zeta potential. The increase of loaded GPH concentration led to the increase of encapsulation efficiency (EE) and to the reduction of the particle size. In fact, MPs, loaded with 2 and 5 mg/ml GPH, had EE values of 44 and 58% and mean particles size of 4.81 and 3.78 μm, respectively. Furthermore, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) profiles revealed the enhanced thermal stability of encapsulated biopeptides compared to the free ones. Release kinetic data showed a Fickian diffusion behavior which follows swelling and a diffusion-controlled mechanism for peptides liberation. Finally, as opposed to unloaded MPs, an improvement of the antioxidant activity of the loaded MPs with biopeptides was observed.

Abstract
Chitosan–caseinate nanoparticles were synthesized by polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) formation. Caseinate is an anionic micellar nanocolloid in aqueous solutions, which association with the polycationic chitosan yielded polyelectrolyte complexes with caseinate cores surrounded by a chitosan corona. The pre-structuration of caseinate micelles facilitates the formation of natural polyelectrolyte nanoparticles with good stability and sizes around 200 nm. Such natural nanoparticles can be loaded with molecules for applications in drug-controlled release. In the nanoparticles processing, parameters such as the chitosan degree of acetylation (DA) and molecular weight, order of addition of the polyelectrolytes chitosan (polycation) and caseinate (polyanion), and added weight ratio of polycation:polyanion were varied, which were shown to influence the structure of the polyelectrolyte association, the nanoparticle size and zeta potential. Attenuated total reflection-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) analyses revealed the chemical structure of hydrogel colloidal systems consisting of nanoparticles that contain chitosan and caseinate. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) allowed further characterization of the spherical morphology of the nanoparticles. Furtherly, insulin was chosen as a model drug to study the application of the nanoparticles as a safe biodegradable nanocarrier system for drug-controlled release. An insulin entrapment efficiency of 75% was achieved in the chitosan-caseinate nanoparticles.

Abstract
Recently plant protein Pickering particles have received tremendous interests because of their environmentally friendly, biodegradable, and safe characteristics. However, developing plant protein particles as stabilizers of Pickering emulsion still face many challenges. In current study, a novel nanogel system produced from acylated rapeseed protein isolates (ARPI) was used to stabilize Pickering emulsions. Results showed that self-assembled nanogel after native RPI modified by acylation adjusted the three-phase contact angle of ARPI nanogels system to 86.7° closing to a neutral wettability. At constant oil phase fraction (0.3, v/v), increasing the ARPI nanogels concentrations produced smaller droplet sizes of Pickering emulsions, whereas all freshly prepared Pickering emulsions were stable except 0.1% (w/v) ARPI nanogel-stabilized Pickering emulsion occurred with creaming. The rise of the oil phase fraction showed little influences on the droplets size and visual appearances of Pickering emulsions at a fixed ARPI nanogels concentration (0.75%, w/v). Moreover, the prepared ARPI nanogels stabilized Pickering emulsions were stable against aggregations of droplets at a range of pH conditions ranging from 5.5 to 8.5 and salt concentration as high as 0.2 M. Additionally, the ARPI nanogels concentration above 0.5% favored the formation of Pickering emulsion with long-term storage stability (up to 30 days) against creaming. Microscopic images evidenced that ARPI nanogels could absorb and anchor at the droplets surface forming an interfacial layer. Above findings may deliver a potential strategy for fabricating stable Pickering emulsion based on plant protein particles and are of important significance for the utilization of rapeseed protein in the food industry.

Abstract
Todays, nano-pharmaceutics is emerging as an important field of science to develop and improve efficacy of different drugs. Although nutraceuticals are currently being utilized in the prevention and treatment of various chronic diseases such as cancers, a number of them have displayed issues associated with their solubility, bioavailability, and bio-degradability. In the present review, we focus on curcumin, an important and widely used polyphenol, with diverse pharmacological activities such as anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic, anti-viral, etc. Notwithstanding, it also exhibits poor solubility and bioavailability that may compromise its clinical application to a great extent. Therefore, the manipulation and encapsulation of curcumin into a nanocarrier formulation can overcome these major drawbacks and potentially may lead to a far superior therapeutic efficacy. Among different types of nanocarriers, biological and biopolymer carriers have attracted a significant attention due to their pleiotropic features. Thus, in the present review, the potential protective and therapeutic applications of curcumin, as well as different types of bio-nanocarriers, which can be used to deliver curcumin effectively to the different target sites will be discussed.

Abstract
PolyElectrolyte Nanoparticles (PENs) obtained by layer-by-layer self-assembly of polycations/polyanions suffer from a lack of colloidal stability in physiological conditions. We report a simple innovative approach for increasing their stability by multiple ionic cross-linkers. Herein, a chitosan-based core was stabilized by polyanions such as tripolyphosphate and dextran sulfate at pHs of 3 (aPENs) and 8 (bPENs) to improve the quality of electrostatic interactions in the core and manage self-assembly of polyethyleneimine shell onto the core. The physicochemical properties of the particles were characterized by DLS, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, and TGA. TEM micrographs showed visible core/shell structures of bPENs. From particle size and polydispersity indices, the bPENs stability was salt concentration-dependent. The release profiles of PENs using nicotinic acid demonstrated sustained release in a pH-independent manner with a good fit of Korsmeyer-Peppas model. These results suggest that multiple ionic cross-linkers can be an efficient approach to increase the colloidal stability of PENs.

Abstract
The development of advanced nanomaterials and technologies is essential in biomedical engineering to improve the quality of life. Chitosan-based nanomaterials are on the forefront and attract wide interest due to their versatile physicochemical characteristics such as biodegradability, biocompatibility, and non-toxicity, which play a promising role in biological applications. Chitosan and its derivatives are employed in several applications including pharmaceuticals and biomedical engineering. This article presents a comprehensive overview of recent advances in chitosan derivatives and nanoparticle synthesis, as well as emerging applications in medicine, tissue engineering, drug delivery, gene therapy, and cancer therapy. In addition to the applications, we critically review the main concerns and mitigation strategies related to chitosan bactericidal properties, toxicity/safety using tissue cultures and animal models, and also their potential environmental impact. At the end of this review, we also provide some of future directions and conclusions that are important for expanding the field of biomedical applications of the chitosan nanoparticles.

Abstract
The yellow pigment curcumin, extracted from turmeric, is a renowned polyphenol with a broad spectrum of health properties such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, anti-allergic, anti-dermatophyte, and neuroprotective. However, these properties are followed by a poor pharmacokinetic profile which compromises its therapeutic potential. The association of low absorption by the small intestine and the extensive reductive and conjugative metabolism in the liver dramatically weakens the oral bioavailability. Several strategies such as inhibition of curcumin metabolism with adjuvants as well as novel solid and liquid oral delivery systems have been tried to counteract curcumin poor absorption and rapid elimination from the body. Some of these drug deliveries can successfully enhance the solubility, extending the residence in plasma, improving the pharmacokinetic profile and the cellular uptake.

Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the feasibility of soy protein hydrolysates (SPH)-tannic acid (TA) complex nanoparticle obtained by photocatalysis (SPH-T (P)) to construct curcumin (Cur) delivery vehicles. Methods: The interaction behaviour of SPH-T (P) was investigated using Fourier transform infra-red, X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimeter analyzes. Formation and stability of the complexes were characterised by particle size, morphology, zeta potential, and in vitro release. Results: Negatively charged Cur-loaded complex with small size (<100 nm), spherical cluster shape and uniform size distribution were formed through the driving force of electrostatic attraction, followed by hydrogen bonding. The presence of photocatalysis in the complexes significantly improved the storage stability and in vitro sustained release of curcumin by enhancing the hydrogen bonding, hydrophobic effects and π-π stacking interactions between SPH and TA. Conclusion: SPH-T (P) would be a useful and promising delivery vehicle for encapsulating, protecting, and delivering hydrophobic nutraceuticals.

Abstract
Effective drug delivery is one of the most important issues associated with the administration of therapeutic agents that have low oral bioavailability. Curcumin is an active ingredient in the turmeric plant, which has low oral bioavailability due to its poor aqueous solubility. One strategy that has been considered for enhancing the aqueous solubility, and, thus, its oral bioavailability, is the use of chitosan as a carrier for curcumin. Chitosan is a biodegradable and biocompatible polymer that is relatively water-soluble. Therefore, various studies have sought to improve the aqueous solubility of chitosan. The use of different pharmaceutical excipients and formulation strategies has the potential to improve aqueous solubility, formulation processing, and the overall delivery of hydrophobic drugs. This review focuses on various methods utilized for chitosan-based delivery of curcumin.

Abstract
Food-dervied biopolymer nanogels have recently received considerable attention as favorable carrier systems for nutraceuticals and drugs. In the present study, new biocompatible and self-assembled acylated rapeseed protein isolate (ARPI)-based nanogels were fabricated for potential hydrophobic drug delivery by chemical acylation and heat-induced protein denaturation. The effects of the ARPI concentration, pH, heat temperature, and heat time on the physiochemical properties of self-assembled ARPI nanogels were investigated. The optimized ARPI nanogels were characterized by a hydrodiameter of 170 nm in size, spherical morphology, and light core-dark shell structure. In comparison to native rapeseed protein isolates and ARPI without the heat treatment, ARPI nanogels as a result of dual acylation and heat processes exhibited significantly altered spatial secondary and tertiary structures, increased surface hydrophobicity, and decreased free sulfhydryl contents of the protein. Such properties endow amphilic ARPI with the self-aggregating ability, resulting in the hydrophobic core with formations of covalent disulfide bonds and the hydrophilic shell with succinyl moieties exposed to the water side. Such a cross-linked structure allowed for ARPI nanogels to be resistant against a broad array of pH and ionic strength as well as lyophilization and dilution. ARPI nanogels demonstrated 95% encapsulation efficiency of hydrophobic compound curcumin and significantly increased its anticancer activity against multiple cancer cell lines.
