Enhanced uranium extraction from seawater: from the viewpoint of kinetics and thermodynamics

Uranium extraction from seawater (UES) is recognized as one of the seven pivotal chemical separations with the potential to revolutionize global paradigms. The forthcoming decade is anticipated to witness a surge in UES, driven by escalating energy demands. The oceanic reservoirs, possessing uranium quantities approximately 1000-fold higher than terrestrial mines, present a more sustainable and environmentally benign alternative. Empirical evidence from historical research indicates that adsorption emerges as the most efficacious process for uranium recovery from seawater, considering operational feasibility, cost-effectiveness, and selectivity. Over the years, scientific exploration has led to the development of a plethora of adsorbents with superior adsorption capacity. It would be efficient to design materials with a deep understanding of the adsorption from the perspective of kinetics and thermodynamics. Here, we summarize recent advancements in UES technology and the contemporary challenges encountered in this domain. Furthermore, we present our perspectives on the future trajectory of UES and finally offer our insights into this subject.

Novel multifunctional environmentally friendly degradable zeolitic imidazolate frameworks@poly (γ-glutamic acid) hydrogel with efficient dye adsorption function

Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been widely developed due to the rich porosity, excellent framework structure and multifunctional nature. Meanwhile, a series of MOFs crystals and MOF-based composites have been emerged. However, the widespread applications of MOFs are hindered by challenges such as rigidity, fragility, solution instability, and processing difficulties. In this study, we addressed these limitations by employing an in-situ green growth approach to prepare a zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-8@poly (γ-glutamic acid) hydrogel (ZIF-8@γ-PGA) with hierarchical structures. This innovative method effectively resolves the inherent issues associated with MOFs. Furthermore, the ZIF-8@γ-PGA hydrogel is utilized for dye adsorption, demonstrating an impressive maximum adsorption capacity of 1130 ± 1 mg/g for methylene blue (MB). The adsorption behavior exhibits an excellent agreement with both the kinetic model and isotherm. Meanwhile, because the adsorbent raw materials are all green non-toxic materials, multiple applications of materials can also be realized. Significantly, the results of antibacterial experiments showed that the ZIF-8@γ-PGA hydrogel after in-situ growth of ZIF-8 had better antibacterial properties. Thus, the ZIF-8@γ-PGA hydrogel has great potential for development in wound dressings, sustained drug owing to its biocompatibility and antibacterial activity.

Recent trends in wastewater treatment by using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and their composites: A critical view-point

Respecting the basic need of clean and safe water on earth for every individual, it is necessary to take auspicious steps for waste-water treatment. Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered as promising material because of their intrinsic features including the porosity and high surface area. Further, structural tunability of MOFs by following the principles of reticular chemistry, the MOFs can be functionalized for the high adsorption performance as well as adsorptive removal of target materials. However, there are still some major concerns associated with MOFs limiting their commercialization as promising adsorbents for waste-water treatment. The cost, toxicity and regenerability are the major issues to be addressed for MOFs to get insightful results. In this article, we have concise the current strategies to enhance the adsorption capacity of MOFs during the water-treatment for the removal of toxic dyes, pharmaceuticals, and heavy metals. Further, we have also discussed the role of metallic nodes, linkers and associated functional groups for effective removal of toxic water pollutants. In addition to conformist overview, we have critically analyzed the MOFs as adsorbents in terms of toxicity, cost and regenerability. These factors are utmost important to address before commercialization of MOFs as adsorbents for water-treatment. Finally, some future perspectives are discussed to give directions for potential research.

Construction of amidoxime-functionalized magnetic hydroxyapatite with enhanced uranium extraction performance from aqueous solution and seawater

A novel amidoxime-functionalized magnetic hydroxyapatite (AFNH) was successfuly fabricated to extract uranium from aqueous solution and seawater. The introduction of amidoxime group not only increased the number of active site of AFNH to speed up the adsorption rate and increase the extraction capacity, but also adjusted the optimal extraction pH from 4 to 8, which was beneficial for capturing uranium from seawater. The maximum adsorption capacity and adsorption efficiency at pH 8 were 945.2 mg g-1 and 99.2%, respectively. AFNH still had good removal efficiency (above 90%) after five cycles, indicating the good regeneration of AFNH. After uranium adsorption, AFNH could be easily recycled by magnetic separation due to its magnetism. In simulated seawater, AFNH also showed excellent uranium removal performance with high adsorption efficiency (84.9%) and adsorption capacity (1.70 mg g-1). Furthermore, the 14-day uranium extraction capacity of AFNH in natural seawater could reach 5.93 mg g-1. The SEM, FTIR, XRD and XPS analyses showed that the enhanced uranium extraction performance of AFNH was mainly attributed to electrostatic interaction, complexation and co-precipitation. In conclusion, AFNH was expected to be a candidate as adsorbent with great potential in extracting uranium from seawater.

Modified alginate materials for wastewater treatment: Application prospects

Sodium alginate is a natural macromolecule widely used because of its abundance, low cost of acquisition, and rich hydroxyl and carboxyl groups in the matrix. The physical modification of sodium alginate can be made by blending it with polymer materials. The so-yielded alginate complex is commonly unstable in an aqueous environment due to alginate backbones' high hydrophilicity. The chemical modification can remove its hydrophilic groups and introduce special functional groups or polymers onto the alginate backbones to provide excess reaction sites for specific reactions and effective complexation sites for accommodating antibiotics, dyes, heavy metal ions, and radioactive elements. Sodium alginate has been used in water treatment engineering under revised modification protocols. This article also reviews the latest modification protocols for sodium alginate and outlines the novel application of the modified materials. The limitations of modified sodium alginate materials are described, and research prospects are put forward.

Recent developments and challenges in uranium extraction from seawater through amidoxime-functionalized adsorbents

As per statistical estimations, we have only around 100 years of uranium life in terrestrial ores. In contrast, seawater has viable uranium resources that can secure the future of energy. However, to achieve this, environmental challenges need to be overcome, such as low uranium concentration (3.3 ppb), fouling of adsorbents, uranium speciation, oceanic temperature, and competition between elements for the active site of adsorbent (such as vanadium which has a significant influence on uranium adsorption). Furthermore, the deployability of adsorbent under seawater conditions is a gigantic challenge; hence, leaching-resistant stable adsorbents with good reusability and high elution rates are extremely needed. Powdered (nanostructured) adsorbents available today have limitations in fulfilling these requirements. An increase in the grafting density of functional ligands keeping in view economic sustainability is also a major obstacle but a necessity for high uranium uptake. To cope with these challenges, researchers reported hundreds of adsorbents of different kinds, but amidoxime-based polymeric adsorbents have shown some remarkable advantages and are considered the benchmark in uranium extraction history; they have a high affinity for uranium because of electron donors in their structure, and their amphoteric nature is responsible for effective uranium chelation under a wide range of pH. In this review, we have mainly focused on recent developments in uranium extraction from seawater through amidoxime-based adsorbents, their comparative analysis, and problematic factors that are needed to be considered for future research.

Polyphosphonate-segmented macroporous organosilicon frameworks for efficient dynamic enrichment of uranium with in-situ regeneration

Efficient separation and enrichment of uranium from radioactive effluents is of strategic significance for sustainable development of nuclear energy and environmental protection. Macropore structure of adsorbent is conducive to accessibility of the pore and transport of the adsorbate during dynamic adsorption. However, the low specific surface area results in fewer ligand sites and subsequently reduces the adsorption capacity. Herein, we present a novel strategy for efficient dynamic uranium enrichment using polyphosphonate-segmented macroporous organosilicon frameworks (PMOFs). PMOFs are constructed through the copolymerization of diethyl vinylphosphonate and triethoxyvinylsilane, followed by hydrolysis and condensation of the oligomers. The introduction of polyphosphonate segments into the frameworks endows PMOFs with a macroporous structure (31 µm) and a high ligand content (up to 72 wt%). Consequently, the optimized PMOF-3 demonstrated an ultrahigh dynamic adsorption capacity of 114.8 mg/g among covalently conjugated silicon-based materials. Additionally, PMOF-3 achieves a high enrichment factor (120) in the dynamic enrichment of uranium on a fixed bed column, which can be in-situ regenerated with 1 M NaHCO₃ as the eluent. This work presents a new strategy for efficient dynamic enrichment of nuclides, which can be extended to the separation of other specific pollutants, shedding new light on adsorbent design and technical innovation.

Surface ligand-assisted synthesis and biomedical applications of metal-organic framework nanocomposites

Metal-organic framework (MOF) nanocomposites have recently gained intensive attention for biosensing and disease therapy applications owing to their outstanding physiochemical properties. However, the direct growth of MOF nanocomposites is usually hindered by the mismatched lattice in the interface between the MOF and other nanocomponents. Surface ligands, molecules with surfactant-like properties, are demonstrated to exhibit the robust capability to modify the interfacial properties of nanomaterials and can be utilized as a powerful strategy for the synthesis of MOF nanocomposites. Besides this, surface ligands also exhibit significant functions in the morphological control and functionalization of MOF nanocomposites, thus greatly enhancing their performance in biomedical applications. In this review, the surface ligand-assisted synthesis and biomedical applications of MOF nanocomposites are comprehensively reviewed. Firstly, the synthesis of MOF nanocomposites is discussed according to the diverse roles of surface ligands. Then, MOF nanocomposites with different properties are listed with their applications in biosensing and disease therapy. Finally, current challenges and further directions of MOF nanocomposites are presented to motivate the development of MOF nanocomposites with elaborate structures, enriched functions, and excellent application prospects.

Efficient adsorption of low-concentration uranium from aqueous solutions

The development of nuclear energy has led to the depletion of uranium resources and now presents the challenge of treating radioactive wastewater. Extracting uranium from seawater and nuclear wastewater has been identified as an effective strategy for addressing these issues. However, extracting uranium from nuclear wastewater and seawater is still extremely challenging. In this study, an amidoxime-modified feather keratin aerogel (FK-AO aerogel) was prepared using feather keratin for efficient uranium adsorption. The FK-AO aerogel showed an impressive adsorption capacity of 585.88 mg·g^-1 in an 8 ppm uranium solution, with a calculated maximum adsorption capacity of 990.10 mg·g^-1. Notably, the FK-AO aerogel demonstrated excellent selectivity for U(VI) in simulated seawater that contained coexisting heavy metal ions. In a uranium solution having a salinity of 35 g·L^-1 and a concentration of 0.1-2 ppm, the FK-AO aerogel achieved a uranium removal rate of greater than 90 %, indicating its effectiveness in adsorbing uranium in environments having high salinity and low concentration. This suggests that FK-AO aerogel is an ideal adsorbent for extracting uranium from seawater and nuclear wastewater, and it is also expected that it could be used in industrial applications for extracting uranium from seawater.

Enhanced Yield of Large-Sized Ti3C2Tx MXene Polymers Nanosheets via Cyclic Ultrasonic-Centrifugal Separation

Water pollution has spurred the development of membrane separation technology as a potential means of solving the issue. In contrast to the irregular and asymmetric holes that are easily made during the fabrication of organic polymer membranes, forming regular transport channels is essential. This necessitates the use of large-size, two-dimensional materials that can enhance membrane separation performance. However, some limitations regarding yield are associated with preparing large-sized MXene polymer-based nanosheets, which restrict their large-scale application. Here, we propose a combination of wet etching and cyclic ultrasonic-centrifugal separation to meet the needs of the large-scale production of MXene polymers nanosheets. It was found that the yield of large-sized Ti3C2Tx MXene polymers nanosheets reached 71.37%, which was 2.14 times and 1.77 times higher than that prepared with continuous ultrasonication for 10 min and 60 min, respectively. The size of the Ti3C2Tx MXene polymers nanosheets was maintained at the micron level with the help of the cyclic ultrasonic-centrifugal separation technology. In addition, certain advantages of water purification were evident due to the possibility of attaining the pure water flux of 36.5 kg m−2 h−1 bar−1 for the Ti3C2Tx MXene membrane prepared with cyclic ultrasonic-centrifugal separation. This simple method provided a convenient way for the scale-up production of Ti3C2Tx MXene polymers nanosheets.

Synthesis and characterization of dual light/temperature-responsive supramolecular injectable hydrogel based on host-guest interaction between azobenzene and starch-grafted β-cyclodextrin: Melanoma therapy with paclitaxel

Injectable stimuli-responsive hydrogels could offer an opportunity for local administration at the tumor site and a sustained drug release. In this paper, a copolymer of azobenzene derivative and N-isopropyl acrylamide (NIPAM) was synthesized, which are performed as light- and thermo-sensitive parts, respectively. The DAS@SCD/NIPAZO hydrogel was prepared upon the establishment of host-guest interactions between the hydrophobic core of CD and azobenzene moiety. The LCST of the synthesized copolymer was modified from 31.3 °C to 36.5 °C by the incorporation of the hydrophilic host moieties of the modified starch into the NIPAM copolymer structure. The LCST-based property of the hydrogel made it syringable in low temperatures and switch to a gel state after local injection. The drug release profile of the hydrogel was explored in four different conditions involving two distinct temperatures combined with two different light wavelengths to examine the light- and thermo-sensitivity of the hydrogel. Moreover, a Paclitaxel-loaded hydrogel was prepared to study the in vitro efficiency of the sample and was investigated by MTT assay against the cancerous fibroblastic cells (A-431), which revealed a sharp decline in cell viability under 365 nm light irradiation; furthermore, to evaluate the in vivo effects of the PTX-loaded hydrogel, histological studies based on staining techniques were carried out.

Uranium extraction from seawater: material design, emerging technologies and marine engineering

Uranium extraction from seawater (UES), a potential approach to securing the long-term uranium supply and sustainability of nuclear energy, has experienced significant progress in the past decade. Promising adsorbents with record-high capacities have been developed by diverse innovative synthetic strategies, and scale-up marine field tests have been put forward by several countries. However, significant challenges remain in terms of the adsorbents' properties in complex marine environments, deployment methods, and the economic viability of current UES systems. This review presents an up-to-date overview of the latest advancements in the UES field, highlighting new insights into the mechanistic basis of UES and the methodologies towards the function-oriented development of uranium adsorbents with high adsorption capacity, selectivity, biofouling resistance, and durability. A distinctive emphasis is placed on emerging electrochemical and photochemical strategies that have been employed to develop efficient UES systems. The most recent achievements in marine tests by the major countries are summarized. Challenges and perspectives related to the fundamental, technical, and engineering aspects of UES are discussed. This review is envisaged to inspire innovative ideas and bring technical solutions towards the development of technically and economically viable UES systems.

Metal-Organic Frameworks and Their Composites for Environmental Applications

From the point of view of the ecological environment, contaminants such as heavy metal ions or toxic gases have caused harmful impacts on the environment and human health, and overcoming these adverse effects remains a serious and important task. Very recent, highly crystalline porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), with tailorable chemistry and excellent chemical stability, have shown promising properties in the field of removing various hazardous pollutants. This review concentrates on the recent progress of MOFs and MOF-based materials and their exploit in environmental applications, mainly including water treatment and gas storage and separation. Finally, challenges and trends of MOFs and MOF-based materials for future developments are discussed and explored.

High-strength and anti-biofouling nanofiber membranes for enhanced uranium recovery from seawater and wastewater

Ultrathin fibers can increase the contact area between adsorbents and seawater during the uranium extraction process; however, their construction usually aggravates the complex spinning technology and lowers their mechanical strength. Meanwhile, high strength and antifouling ability are essential for ocean adsorbents to withstand the complex natural environment and microbial systems. Herein, we design high-strength and anti-biofouling poly(amidoxime) nanofiber membranes (HA-PAO NFMs) via a supramolecular crosslinking. Bacterial cellulose supplies the NFMs with ultrathin fiber structure, and large amounts of adsorption ligands are immobilized on the framework via the crosslinking with antibacterial ions. Thus, different from other fibers, HA-PAO NFMs achieve ultrathin diameter (20-30 nm), high BET area (51 m² g^-1), and excellent mechanical strength (13.6 MPa). The uranium adsorption capacity reaches to 409 mg-U/g-Ads in the simulated seawater, 99.2% uranium can be removed from the U-contained wastewater, and the adsorption process can be observed by the naked eye due to the significant color changes. The inhibition zones indicate their excellent anti-biofouling ability, which contributes to 1.83 times more uranium extraction amount from natural seawater than the non-antifouling adsorbents. Furthermore, they display a long service life and can be large-scale prepared, and the HA-PAO NFMs have potential in the massive uranium recovery.

The Efficient and Convenient Extracting Uranium from Water by a Uranyl-Ion Affine Microgel Container

Uranium is an indispensable part of the nuclear industry that benefits us, but its consequent pollution of water bodies also makes a far-reaching impact on human society. The rapid, efficient and convenient extraction of uranium from water is to be a top priority. Thanks to the super hydrophilic and fast adsorption rate of microgel, it has been the ideal adsorbent in water; however, it was too difficult to recover the microgel after adsorption, which limited its practical applications. Here, we developed a uranyl-ion affine and recyclable microgel container that has not only the rapid swelling rate of microgel particles but also allows the detection of the adsorption saturation process by the naked eye.

Metal-Organic Framework-Based Materials for Adsorption and Detection of Uranium(VI) from Aqueous Solution

The steady supply of uranium resources and the reduction or elimination of the ecological and human health hazards of wastewater containing uranium make the recovery and detection of uranium in water greatly important. Thus, the development of effective adsorbents and sensors has received growing attention. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) possessing fascinating characteristics such as high surface area, high porosity, adjustable pore size, and luminescence have been widely used for either uranium adsorption or sensing. Now pertinent research has transited slowly into simultaneous uranium adsorption and detection. In this review, the progress on the research of MOF-based materials used for both adsorption and detection of uranium in water is first summarized. The adsorption mechanisms between uranium species in aqueous solution and MOF-based materials are elaborated by macroscopic batch experiments combined with microscopic spectral technology. Moreover, the application of MOF-based materials as uranium sensors is focused on their typical structures, sensing mechanisms, and the representative examples. Furthermore, the bifunctional MOF-based materials used for simultaneous detection and adsorption of U(VI) from aqueous solution are introduced. Finally, we also discuss the challenges and perspectives of MOF-based materials for uranium adsorption and detection to provide a useful inspiration and significant reference for further developing better adsorbents and sensors for uranium containment and detection.

Comparative evaluation of Fe-, Zr-, and La-based metal-organic frameworks derived from recycled PET plastic bottles for arsenate removal

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) derived from recycled polyester (polyethylene terephthalate, PET) bottles were investigated in both batch and column studies for the removal of arsenate. As-synthesized Fe-MOF, Zr-MOF, and La-MOF were systematically analyzed by SEM, PXRD, FTIR, BET, and XPS techniques. The obtained MOFs showed high crystallinity with the specific surface areas of 128.3, 290.4, and 61.8 m²/g for Fe-MOF, Zr-MOF, and La-MOF, respectively. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model simulated arsenate adsorption on MOF materials well, which can be explained by electrostatic interactions, surface complexation, and ligand exchange mechanisms. The maximum adsorption capacities of arsenate onto Fe-MOF, Zr-MOF, and La-MOF were found to be 70.02, 85.72, and 114.28 mg/g at pH 7, respectively. The effect of pH and co-existing anions on the arsenate adsorption on MOF materials was also evaluated for practical applications. The MOF materials showed reduced adsorption capacity for arsenate by less than 10% up to four cycles of regeneration and did not induce any significant (p > 0.05) acute toxicity (<2.5% mortality) in Daphnia magna. In a flow-through system, Fe-MOF, Zr-MOF, and La-MOF were used to treat 176, 255, and 398 mL bed volumes of arsenate contaminated water, respectively, and consistently reduced the concentration of arsenate ions from 500 to 10 μg/L. This study clearly demonstrated that MOF materials derived from waste PET bottles are economically promising adsorbents for the successful elimination of arsenate species from aqueous environments.

Efficient removal of U(VI) in acidic environment with spent coffee grounds derived hydrogel

In this study, humic-like substances (HLSs) was extracted from spent coffee grounds (SCGs), and it together with poly acrylic acid (PAA), was used for the first time to synthesize hydrogel material, namely HLSs/PAA gel, by one-step radical polymerization. Its maximum theoretical sorption capacity toward U(VI) at pH 3.00 was 661.01 mg/g, and it could decrease the concentration of U(VI) in acidic actual groundwater from 0.2537 to 0.0003 mg/L, showing that the gel had excellent U(VI) removal efficiency in acidic environment. The SEM characterization of HLSs/PAA gel showed that its macroporous network structure maintained well after the sorption process, indicating that the gel had excellent acid-resistant property. Moreover, the gel exhibited excellent anti-interference performance in the interfering ions effect experiment. The gel integrates the merits of excellent U(VI) sorption properties, stability and anti-interference performance in acidic environment, and has promising application prospects in the remediation of acidic uranium wastewater.

Waste feather fiber based high extraction capacity bio-adsorbent for sustainable uranium extraction from seawater

Recycling uranium from seawater is of great significance to the development of nuclear industry. However, due to high salinity and low uranium concentration in seawater, there are still many challenges in current seawater uranium extraction technology. In this study, waste feather fibers (FF) were used as raw materials to develop a phosphonate-functionalized feather fiber (FF-PT). The study on the adsorption performance shows that FF-PT have good adsorption and recycling performance for uranium. The study on the adsorption performance shows that FF-PT have good adsorption and recycling performance for uranium. The adsorption capacity reaches up to 342.5 mg·g^-1 in the 8 ppm uranium solution, and service life of at least 10 cycles were obtained. In addition, in the environment with high salinity and the coexistence of metal competitive ions, FF-PT also shows excellent selectivity, and it can reach 3.22 mg·g^-1 adsorption capacity after immersed in natural seawater for 30 days. Combined with the results of economic analysis, we believe that the FF-PT has broad application prospects in the industrialized uranium extraction from seawater.

Applications of Metal-Organic Frameworks in Water Treatment: A Review

The ever-expanding scale of industry and agriculture has led to the gradual increase of pollutants (e.g., heavy metal ions, synthetic dyes, and antibiotics) in water resources, and the ecology and wastewater are grave problems that need to be solved urgently and has attracted widespread attention from the research community and industry in recent years. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a type of organic-inorganic hybrid material with a distinctive 3D network crystal structure. Lately, MOFs have made striking progress in the fields of adsorption, catalytic degradation, and biomedicine on account of their large specific surface and well-developed pore structure. This review summarizes the latest research achievements in the preparation of pristine MOFs, MOF composites, and MOF derivatives for various applications including the removal of heavy metal ions, organic dyes, and other harmful substances in sewage. Furthermore, the working mechanisms of utilizing adsorption, photocatalytic degradation, and membrane separation technologies are also briefly described for specific pollutants removal from sewage. It is expected that this review will provide inspiration and references for the synthesis of pristine MOFs as well as their composites and derivatives with excellent water treatment performance.

Highly efficient immobilization of environmental uranium contamination with Pseudomonas stutzeri by biosorption, biomineralization, and bioreduction

Uranium is a heavy metal with both chemotoxicity and radiotoxicity. Due to the increasing consumption of uranium, the remediation of uranium contamination and recovery of uranium from non-conventional approach is highly needed. Microorganism exhibits high potential for immobilization of uranium. This study for the first time isolated a marine Pseudomonas stutzeri strain MRU-UE1 with high uranium immobilization capacity of 308.72 mg/g, which is attributed to the synergetic mechanisms of biosorption, biomineralization, and bioreduction. The uranium is found to be immobilized in forms of tetragonal chernikovite (H₂(UO₂)₂(PO₄)₂·8H₂O) by biomineralization and CaU(PO₄)₂ by bioreduction under aerobic environment, which is rarely observed and would broaden the application of this strain in aerobic condition. The protein, phosphate group, and carboxyl group are found to be essential for the biosorption of uranium. In response to the stress of uranium, the strain produces inorganic phosphate group, which transformed soluble uranyl ion to insoluble uranium-containing precipitates, and poly-β-hydroxybutyrate (PHB), which is observed for the first time during the interaction between microorganism and uranium. In summary, P. stutzeri strain MRU-UE1 would be a promising alternative for environmental uranium contamination remediation and uranium extraction from seawater.

High efficient and durable catalysts are always needed to lower the kinetic barriers as well as prolong the service life associated with oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, a sequential synthetic strategy is considered to prepare a hierarchical nanostructure, in which each component can be configured to achieve their full potential so that endows the resulting nanocatalyst a good overall performance. In order to realize this, well-organized cobalt oxide (Co₃O₄) nanopillars are firstly grown onto ultrathin 1T-molybdenum sulfide (1T-MoS₂) to obtain high surface area electrocatalyst, providing electron transfer pathways and structural stability. After that, zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 (ZIF-67) derived carbonization film is further in situ deposited on the surface of nanopillars to generate plentiful active sites, thereby accelerating OER kinetics. Based on the combination of different components, the electron transfer capability, catalytic activity and durability are optimized and fully implemented. The obtained nanocatalyst (defined as 1T-MoS₂/Co₃O₄/CN) exhibits the superior OER catalytic ability with the overpotential of 202 mV and Tafel slope of 57 mV·dec^-1 at 10 mA·cm^-2 in 0.1 M KOH, and good durability with a minor chronoamperometric decay of 9.15 % after 60,000 s of polarization.

Fe3+-citric acid/sodium alginate hydrogel: A photo-responsive platform for rapid water purification

As water pollution in human society becomes more and more serious, the demand for materials that can be used for wastewater treatment is increasing. Here, we reported a sodium alginate-based hydrogel (Fe³⁺-CA/SA hydrogel) that can efficiently photocatalyze the degradation of malachite green. The Fe³⁺-CA/SA hydrogel is composed of sodium alginate, citric acid, and Fe³⁺. The hydrogel has multi-leveled pore structure and photochromic ability. Benefiting from the unique microstructure and positive feedback chemical reaction process, the hydrogel has high photocatalytic efficiency. Under 365 nm UV light irradiation, the hydrogel can degrade around 95% of malachite green (20 mg/L) in about 4 min, and there is no need to add H₂O₂ in the degradation process. The work helps to expand the application of sodium alginate-based hydrogels in the field of water treatment. It also has exploratory significance for the principle of photocatalytic degradation of malachite green.

Ultra-high mechanical property and multi-layer porous structure of amidoximation ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer balls for efficient and selective uranium adsorption from radioactive wastewater

Adsorption uranium [U(VI)] from U-containing radioactive wastewater (URW) is a critical strategy for solving the resource shortage and environmental pollution in pace with the sustainable development of nuclear energy. However, the URW universally exhibits acidity and contains co-existing metal ions with high concentration. Herein, the amidoximation ethylene-acrylic acid copolymer balls (EAA-AO) with aciduric and super-high mechanical property were successfully synthesized through grafting diaminomaleonitrile and further treatment of amidoximation. Significantly, the mechanical properties of EAA-AO were not affected by the grafting process and maintained super-high mechanical properties. Furthermore, the -NH₂ and unreacted -CN groups in diaminomaleonitrile adjusted the pK_a to make the optimal pH be 4. In addition, the microstructure of EAA-AO was transformed from the original dense to multi-layer porous structure, which promoted the mass transfer process and the contact between uranyl ions (UO₂²⁺) and internal adsorption active sites. The adsorption capacity of EAA-AO was about 1.78 times that of EAA at pH = 4, and the adsorption capacity for U(VI) was about 8.17 times that of Ba²⁺ with the second highest adsorption capacity. Therefore, the EAA-AO exhibited ultra-high adsorption performance (q_e = 3.196 mg g^-1) in the artificial radioactive wastewater, laying a good foundation for subsequent large-scale industrial adsorption of U(VI) in nuclear industrial wastewater.

Anti-bacterial and super-hydrophilic bamboo charcoal with amidoxime modified for efficient and selective uranium extraction from seawater

With the growing demand for nuclear energy, uranium extraction from seawater (UES) is becoming increasingly important due to the ocean reserves 4.5 billion tons for uranium(VI) [U(VI)]. Herein, two kinds of amidoxime modified bamboo charcoal (AOOBCS and AOOBCH) with porous structure, anti-bacterial, and super-hydrophilic properties were successfully synthetized by two etching methods (soaking and hydrothermal). The super-hydrophilic property of AOOBCH accelerated the contact between the amidoxime group and uranyl ions (UO₂²⁺), and promoted the action of anti-bacterial substances (bamboo-quinone) on bacteria to restrain the form of bacterial membrane. In addition, the amidoxime groups not only didn't destroy the super-hydrophilic surface, but also adjusted the adsorbents' pK_a by changing the amidoxime grafting rate. Under PH = 7, the adsorption capacity of AOOBCH was about 1.97 times that of AOOBCS and 2.95 times that of BC. Importantly, the AOOBCH exhibited ultra-high uptake capacity (6.37 mg g^-1) and exceptional selectivity for U(VI) in 100-fold interfering ions simulated seawater system due to the chelation between C(NH₂)NOH and UO₂²⁺ to form a more stable coordination structure (E_ads = -36.56 eV). Benefiting from the superior performance and selectivity, the AOOBCH is a potential candidate for UES.

Facile carboxylation of natural eggshell membrane for highly selective uranium (VI) adsorption from radioactive wastewater

With the commercial nuclear technology rising in society nowadays, it is of paramount importance to remove uranium (VI) in radioactive wastewater through a cost-effective and efficient way. Due to simple operation, low cost and abundant adsorbents, the adsorption method has been widely used to treat the radioactive wastewater. However, unsatisfactory selectivity and potential secondary pollution of most adsorbents hamper their practical large-scale application. To overcome these limitations, an effective and green absorbent is developed by functionalizing the waste eggshell membrane (ESM) with carboxyl-rich agents. This design concept transfers waste ESM (or "trash") into a unique "treasure" absorbent for directly handling radioactive wastewater. The resultant ESM-COOH shows excellent adsorption selectivity toward uranium (VI) with the selectivity coefficient of 75%, exceeding a majority of reported adsorbents. Moreover, its adsorption capacity still maintains 84% of the initial value after six cycles, suggesting good reusability. These excellent features enable the ESM-COOH to adsorb uranium (VI) highly selectively and efficiently. This work offers a concept to transfer biological wastes into treasure for the mass remediation of water body.

Metal-Organic-Framework Based Functional Materials for Uranium Recovery: Performance Optimization and Structure/Functionality-Activity Relationships

Uranium recovery has profound significance in both uranium resource acquisition and pollution treatment. In recent years, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted much attention as potential uranium adsorbents owing to their tunable structural topology and designable functionalities. This review explores the research progress in representative classic MOFs (MIL-101, UiO-66, ZIF-8/ZIF-67) and other advanced MOF-based materials for efficient uranium extraction in aqueous or seawater environments. The uranium uptake mechanism of the MOF-based materials is refined, and the structure/functionality-property relationship is further systematically elucidated. By summarizing the typical functionalization and structure design methods, the performance improvement strategies for MOF-based adsorbents are emphasized. Finally, the present challenges and potential opportunities are proposed for the breakthrough of high-performance MOF-based materials in uranium extraction.

Polyguanidine-modified adsorbent to enhance marine applicability for uranium recovery from seawater

The marine applicability of adsorbents intended for recovering uranium from seawater is crucial. For such applicability, the materials must exhibit anti-biofouling properties, seawater pH adaptability (pH~8), and salt tolerance. Extracting uranium from seawater is a long-term project; hence, biofouling, high salt concentrations, and weak alkaline environments negatively affect the adsorption of uranium and damage the recovered materials. Most studies on the extraction of uranium from seawater focus on increasing the adsorption capacity of the employed adsorbent, while its marine applicability is neglected. In the present study, three types of guanidine polymer (GP)-modified acrylic fibers were prepared to investigate the impact of the introduced structure on the marine applicability of the fibers. After screening, the introduction of polyhexamethylene biguanidine (PHMB) is observed to produce PAO-PHMB-A, characterized by excellent marine applicability. The enhanced properties include high antimicrobial activity (10⁹ CFU/mL, 99.71%), good salt tolerance, and optimal adsorption at a pH of 8. Owing to the synergistic effect of its functional groups, the PAO-PHMB-A material exhibits excellent adsorption performance (525.89 mg/g), as well as high selectivity and durability. More importantly, long-term marine tests revealed that PAO-PHMB-A shows a remarkable uranium adsorption capacity (30 d, 3.19 mg/g) and excellent antibacterial activity. Considering its excellent marine applicability and good adsorption performance, the PAO-PHMB-A material developed in this work could serve as a potential adsorbent for engineering applications associated with uranium recovery from seawater.

High-Capacity Amidoxime-Functionalized β-Cyclodextrin/Graphene Aerogel for Selective Uranium Capture

Uranium extraction from seawater is a grand challenge of mounting severity as the energy demand increases with a growing global population. An amidoxime-functionalized carboxymethyl β-cyclodextrin/graphene aerogel (GDC) is developed for highly efficient and selective uranium extraction via a facile one-pot hydrothermal process. GDC reaches equilibrium in 1 h, and the maximum adsorption capacity calculated from Langmuir model is 654.2 mg/g. Benefiting from the chelation and complexation reaction, the obtained GDC has an excellent selectivity even when the competitive cations, anions, and oil pollutants exist. In addition, the aerogel possesses great mechanical integrity and remains intact after 10 compression cycles. Meanwhile, the GDC can be easily regenerated and maintains a high reusability of 87.3% after 10 adsorption-desorption cycles. It is worthwhile to mention that GDC exhibits an excellent extraction capacity of 19.7 mg/g within 21 days in natural seawater, which is greatly desired in uranium extraction from seawater.

Antibiofouling Ultrathin Poly(amidoxime) Membrane for Enhanced U(VI) Recovery from Wastewater and Seawater

Although eco-friendly amidoxime-based adsorbents own an excellent uranium (U)-adsorption capacity, their U-adsorption efficiency is commonly reduced and even damaged by the biological adhesion from bacteria/microorganisms in an aqueous environment. Herein, we present an antibiofouling ultrathin poly(amidoxime) membrane (AUPM) with highly enhanced U-adsorption performance, through dispersing the quaternized chitosan (Q-CS) and poly(amidoxime) in a cross-linked sulfonated cellulose nanocrystals (S-CNC) network. The cross-linked S-CNC not only can elevate the hydrophilicity to improve the U-adsorption efficiency of AUPM but also can enhance the mechanical strength to form a self-supporting ultrathin membrane (17.21 MPa, 10 μm thickness). More importantly, this AUPM owns a good antibiofouling property, owing to the broad-spectrum antibacterial quaternary ammonium groups of the Q-CS. As a result, within the 1.00 L of low-concentration (100 ppb) U-added pure water (pH ≈ 5) and seawater (pH ≈ 8) for 48 h, 30 mg of AUPM can recover 93.7% U and 91.4% U, respectively. Furthermore, compared with the U-absorption capacity of a blank membrane without the Q-CS, that of AUPM can significantly increase 37.4% reaching from 6.39 to 8.78 mg/g after being in natural seawater for only 25 d. Additionally, this AUPM can still maintain almost constant tensile strength during 10 cycles of adsorption-desorption, which indicates the relatively long-term usability of AUPM. This AUPM will be a promising candidate for highly efficient and large-scale U-recovery from both U-containing waste freshwater/seawater and natural seawater, which will be greatly helpful to deal with the U-pollution and enrich U for the consumption of nuclear power. More importantly, the work will provide a new convenient but universal strategy to fabricate new highly enhanced low-cost U-adsorbents, through the introduction of both an antibacterial property and a high mechanical performance, which will be a good reference for the design of new highly efficient U-adsorbents.

DNA nano-pocket for ultra-selective uranyl extraction from seawater

Extraction of uranium from seawater is critical for the sustainable development of nuclear energy. However, the currently available uranium adsorbents are hampered by co-existing metal ion interference. DNAzymes exhibit high selectivity to specific metal ions, yet there is no DNA-based adsorbent for extraction of soluble minerals from seawater. Herein, the uranyl-binding DNA strand from the DNAzyme is polymerized into DNA-based uranium extraction hydrogel (DNA-UEH) that exhibits a high uranium adsorption capacity of 6.06 mg g⁻¹ with 18.95 times high selectivity for uranium against vanadium in natural seawater. The uranium is found to be bound by oxygen atoms from the phosphate groups and the carbonyl groups, which formed the specific nano-pocket that empowers DNA-UEH with high selectivity and high binding affinity. This study both provides an adsorbent for uranium extraction from seawater and broadens the application of DNA for being used in recovery of high-value soluble minerals from seawater.

The extraction of metals from seawater is an area of great potential; especially for the extraction of uranium. Here, the authors report on the synthesis of a DNA based uranium adsorbent with high selectivity and demonstrate the potential for the DNA based extraction of high-value soluble minerals from seawater.
