Advances in Nanoarchitectonics: A Review of "Static" and "Dynamic" Particle Assembly Methods

Particle assembly is a promising technique to create functional materials and devices from nanoscale building blocks. However, the control of particle arrangement and orientation is challenging and requires careful design of the assembly methods and conditions. In this study, the static and dynamic methods of particle assembly are reviewed, focusing on their applications in biomaterial sciences. Static methods rely on the equilibrium interactions between particles and substrates, such as electrostatic, magnetic, or capillary forces. Dynamic methods can be associated with the application of external stimuli, such as electric fields, magnetic fields, light, or sound, to manipulate the particles in a non-equilibrium state. This study discusses the advantages and limitations of such methods as well as nanoarchitectonic principles that guide the formation of desired structures and functions. It also highlights some examples of biomaterials and devices that have been fabricated by particle assembly, such as biosensors, drug delivery systems, tissue engineering scaffolds, and artificial organs. It concludes by outlining the future challenges and opportunities of particle assembly for biomaterial sciences. This review stands as a crucial guide for scholars and professionals in the field, fostering further investigation and innovation. It also highlights the necessity for continuous research to refine these methodologies and devise more efficient techniques for nanomaterial synthesis. The potential ramifications on healthcare and technology are substantial, with implications for drug delivery systems, diagnostic tools, disease treatments, energy storage, environmental science, and electronics.

2D MXene electrochemical transistors

The solid-state field-effect transistor, FET, and its theories were paramount in the discovery and studies of graphene. In the past two decades another transistor based on conducting polymers, called organic electrochemical transistor (ECT), has been developed and largely studied. The main difference between organic ECTs and FETs is the mode and extent of channel doping; while in FETs the channel only has surface doping through dipoles, the mixed ionic-electronic conductivity of the channel material in organic ECTs enables bulk electrochemical doping. As a result, organic ECTs maximize conductance modulation at the expense of speed. To date ECTs have been based on conducting polymers, but here we show that MXenes, a class of 2D materials beyond graphene, enable the realization of electrochemical transistors (ECTs). We show that the formulas for organic ECTs can be applied to these 2D ECTs and used to extract parameters like mobility. These MXene ECTs have high transconductance values but low on-off ratios. We further show that conductance switching data measured using ECT, in combination with other in situ-ex situ electrochemical measurements, is a powerful tool for correlating the change in conductance to that of the redox state, to our knowledge, this is the first report of this important correlation for MXene films. 2D ECTs can draw great inspiration and theoretical tools from the field of organic ECTs and have the potential to considerably extend the capabilities of transistors beyond those of conducting polymer ECTs, with added properties such as extreme heat resistance, tolerance for solvents, and higher conductivity for both electrons and ions than conducting polymers.

Ultrathin Ambipolar Polyelectrolyte Capacitors Prepared via Layer-by-Layer Assembling

Miniaturized solid state capacitors leveraging migration of unipolar ions in a single polyelectrolyte layer sandwiched between metal electrodes, namely, polyelectrolyte capacitors (PECs), have been recently reported with areal capacitance up to 100-200 nF mm-2 . Nonetheless, application of PECs in consumer and industrial electronics has been hindered so far by their small operational frequency range, up to a few kHz, due to the resistive behavior (phase angle >-45°) of PECs in the range kHz-to-MHz. Here, it is reported on multilayer polyelectrolyte capacitors (mPECs) that leverage as dielectric an ambipolar nanometer-thick (down to 10 nm) stack of anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes assembled layer-by-layer between metal electrodes to eliminate the resistive behavior at frequencies from kHz to MHz. This significantly extends the operational range of mPECs over PECs. mPECs with areal capacitance as high as 25 nF mm-2 at 20 Hz and full capacitive behavior from 100 mHz to 10 MHz are demonstrated using different assembling conditions and anionic/cationic polyelectrolyte pairs. The mPECs reliably operate over time for >300 million cycles, at different biasing voltages up to 3 V, and temperatures up to 80 °C, showing a reversible capacitive behavior without significant hysteresis. Application of mPECs in flexible electronics, also operating at high frequency, is envisaged.

Organic Electrochemical Transistors for Biomarker Detections

The improvement of living standards and the advancement of medical technology have led to an increased focus on health among individuals. Detections of biomarkers are feasible approaches to obtaining information about health status, disease progression, and response to treatment of an individual. In recent years, organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) have demonstrated high electrical performances and effectiveness in detecting various types of biomarkers. This review provides an overview of the working principles of OECTs and their performance in detecting multiple types of biomarkers, with a focus on the recent advances and representative applications of OECTs in wearable and implantable biomarker detections, and provides a perspective for the future development of OECT-based biomarker sensors.

Field-effect transistors engineered via solution-based layer-by-layer nanoarchitectonics

The layer-by-layer (LbL) technique has been proven to be one of the most versatile approaches in order to fabricate functional nanofilms. The use of simple and inexpensive procedures as well as the possibility to incorporate a very wide range of materials through different interactions have driven its application in a wide range of fields. On the other hand, field-effect transistors (FETs) are certainly among the most important elements in electronics. The ability to modulate the flowing current between a source and a drain electrode via the voltage applied to the gate electrode endow these devices to switch or amplify electronic signals, being vital in all of our everyday electronic devices. In this topical review, we highlight different research efforts to engineer field-effect transistors using the LbL assembly approach. We firstly discuss on the engineering of the channel material of transistors via the LbL technique. Next, the deposition of dielectric materials through this approach is reviewed, allowing the development of high-performance electronic components. Finally, the application of the LbL approach to fabricate FETs-based biosensing devices is also discussed, as well as the improvement of the transistor's interfacial sensitivity by the engineering of the semiconductor with polyelectrolyte multilayers.

PEDOT-Polyamine-Based Organic Electrochemical Transistors for Monitoring Protein Binding

The fabrication of efficient organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs)-based biosensors requires the design of biocompatible interfaces for the immobilization of biorecognition elements, as well as the development of robust channel materials to enable the transduction of the biochemical event into a reliable electrical signal. In this work, PEDOT-polyamine blends are shown as versatile organic films that can act as both highly conducting channels of the transistors and non-denaturing platforms for the construction of the biomolecular architectures that operate as sensing surfaces. To achieve this goal, we synthesized and characterized films of PEDOT and polyallylamine hydrochloride (PAH) and employed them as conducting channels in the construction of OECTs. Next, we studied the response of the obtained devices to protein adsorption, using glucose oxidase (GOx) as a model system, through two different strategies: The direct electrostatic adsorption of GOx on the PEDOT-PAH film and the specific recognition of the protein by a lectin attached to the surface. Firstly, we used surface plasmon resonance to monitor the adsorption of the proteins and the stability of the assemblies on PEDOT-PAH films. Then, we monitored the same processes with the OECT showing the capability of the device to perform the detection of the protein binding process in real time. In addition, the sensing mechanisms enabling the monitoring of the adsorption process with the OECTs for the two strategies are discussed.

Cell-Free Synthesis Goes Electric: Dual Optical and Electronic Biosensor via Direct Channel Integration into a Supported Membrane Electrode

Assembling transmembrane proteins on organic electronic materials is one promising approach to couple biological functions to electrical readouts. A biosensing device produced in such a way would enable both the monitoring and regulation of physiological processes and the development of new analytical tools to identify drug targets and new protein functionalities. While transmembrane proteins can be interfaced with bioelectronics through supported lipid bilayers (SLBs), incorporating functional and oriented transmembrane proteins into these structures remains challenging. Here, we demonstrate that cell-free expression systems allow for the one-step integration of an ion channel into SLBs assembled on an organic conducting polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT:PSS). Using the large conductance mechanosensitive channel (MscL) as a model ion channel, we demonstrate that MscL adopts the correct orientation, remains mobile in the SLB, and is active on the polyelectrolyte surface using optical and electrical readouts. This work serves as an important illustration of a rapidly assembled bioelectronic platform with a diverse array of downstream applications, including electrochemical sensing, physiological regulation, and screening of transmembrane protein modulators.

Impedance sensing of antibiotic interactions with a pathogenic E. coli outer membrane supported bilayer

Antibiotic resistance is a growing global health concern due to the decreasing number of antibiotics available for therapeutic use as more drug-resistant bacteria develop. Changes in the membrane properties of Gram-negative bacteria can influence their response to antibiotics and give rise to resistance. Thus, understanding the interactions between the bacterial membrane and antibiotics is important for elucidating microbial membrane properties to use for designing novel antimicrobial drugs. To study bacterial membrane-antibiotic interactions, we created a surface-supported planar bacterial outer membrane model on an optically-transparent, conducting polymer surface (poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS)). This model enables membrane characterization using fluorescence microscopy and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The membrane platform is fabricated using outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) isolated from clinically relevant Gram-negative bacteria, enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli. This approach enables us to mimic the native components of the bacterial membrane by incorporating native lipids, membrane proteins, and lipopolysaccharides. Using EIS, we determined membrane impedance and captured membrane-antibiotic interactions using the antibiotics polymyxin B, bacitracin, and meropenem. This sensor platform incorporates aspects of the biological complexity found in bacterial outer membranes and, by doing so, offers a powerful, biomimetic approach to the study of antimicrobial drug interactions.

Elastomeric Nanodielectrics for Soft and Hysteresis-Free Electronics

Elastomeric dielectrics are crucial for reliably governing the carrier densities in semiconducting channels during deformation in soft/stretchable field-effect transistors (FETs). Uncontrolled stacking of polymeric chains renders elastomeric dielectrics poorly insulated at nanoscale thicknesses, thereby thick films are usually required, leading to high voltage or power consumption for on/off operations of FETs. Here, layer-by-layer assembly is exploited to build 15-nm-thick elastomeric nanodielectrics through alternative adsorption of oppositely charged polyurethanes (PUs) for soft and hysteresis-free FETs. After mild thermal annealing to heal pinholes, such PU multilayers offer high areal capacitances of 237 nF cm^-2 and low leakage current densities of 3.2 × 10^-8 A cm^-2 at 2 V. Owing to the intrinsic ductility of the elastomeric PUs, the nanofilms possess excellent dielectric properties at a strain of 5% or a bending radius of 1.5 mm, while the wrinkled counterparts show mechanical stability with negligible changes of leakage currents after repeated stretching to a strain of 50%. Besides, these nanodielectrics are immune to high humidity and conserve their properties when immersed into water, despite their assembly occurs aqueously. Furthermore, the PU dielectrics are implemented in carbon nanotube FETs, demonstrating low-voltage operations (< 1.5 V) and negligible hysteresis without any encapsulations.

A sensitive platform for DNA detection based on organic electrochemical transistor and nucleic acid self-assembly signal amplification

Highly sensitive detection of DNA is of great importance for the detection of genetic damage and errors for the diagnosis of many diseases. Traditional highly sensitive organic electrochemical transistor (OECT)-based methods mainly rely on good conductivity materials, which may be limited by complex synthesis and modification steps. In this work, DNA biosensor based on OECT and hybridization chain reaction (HCR) signal amplification was demonstrated for the first time. Au nanoparticles were electrochemically deposited on the Au gate electrode to increase the surface area. Then, the HCR products, long negatively charged double-stranded DNA, were connected to the target by hybridization, which can increase the effective gate voltage offset of OECT. This sensor exhibited high sensitivity and even 0.1 pM target DNA could be directly detected with a significant voltage shift. In addition, it could discriminate target DNA from the mismatched DNA with good selectivity. This proposed method based on HCR in DNA detection exhibited an efficient amplification performance on OECT, which provided new opportunities for highly sensitive and selective detection of DNA.

A new method has been developed for DNA detection by integrating hybridization chain reaction signal amplification with organic electrochemical transistor device for the first time.

Organic Bioelectronic Devices for Metabolite Sensing

Electrochemical detection of metabolites is essential for early diagnosis and continuous monitoring of a variety of health conditions. This review focuses on organic electronic material-based metabolite sensors and highlights their potential to tackle critical challenges associated with metabolite detection. We provide an overview of the distinct classes of organic electronic materials and biorecognition units used in metabolite sensors, explain the different detection strategies developed to date, and identify the advantages and drawbacks of each technology. We then benchmark state-of-the-art organic electronic metabolite sensors by categorizing them based on their application area (in vitro, body-interfaced, in vivo, and cell-interfaced). Finally, we share our perspective on using organic bioelectronic materials for metabolite sensing and address the current challenges for the devices and progress to come.

Polyelectrolyte Gels: Fundamentals, Fabrication and Applications

Polyelectrolyte gels are an important class of polymer gels and a versatile platform with charged polymer networks with ionisable groups. They have drawn significant recent attention as a class of smart material and have demonstrated potential for a variety of applications. This review begins with the fundamentals of polyelectrolyte gels, which encompass various classifications (i.e., origin, charge, shape) and crucial aspects (ionic conductivity and stimuli responsiveness). It further centralises recent developments of polyelectrolyte gels, emphasising their synthesis, structure-property relationships and responsive properties. Sequentially, this review demonstrates how polyelectrolyte gels' flourishing properties create attractiveness to a range of applications including tissue engineering, drug delivery, actuators and bioelectronics. Finally, the review outlines the indisputable appeal, further improvements and emerging trends in polyelectrolyte gels.

Functionalization Strategies of PEDOT and PEDOT:PSS Films for Organic Bioelectronics Applications

Organic bioelectronics involves the connection of organic semiconductors with living organisms, organs, tissues, cells, membranes, proteins, and even small molecules. In recent years, this field has received great interest due to the development of all kinds of devices architectures, enabling the detection of several relevant biomarkers, the stimulation and sensing of cells and tissues, and the recording of electrophysiological signals, among others. In this review, we discuss recent functionalization approaches for PEDOT and PEDOT:PSS films with the aim of integrating biomolecules for the fabrication of bioelectronics platforms. As the choice of the strategy is determined by the conducting polymer synthesis method, initially PEDOT and PEDOT:PSS films preparation methods are presented. Later, a wide variety of PEDOT functionalization approaches are discussed, together with bioconjugation techniques to develop efficient organic-biological interfaces. Finally, and by making use of these approaches, the fabrication of different platforms towards organic bioelectronics devices is reviewed.

Recent advances in bioelectronics chemistry

Research in bioelectronics is highly interdisciplinary, with many new developments being based on techniques from across the physical and life sciences. Advances in our understanding of the fundamental chemistry underlying the materials used in bioelectronic applications have been a crucial component of many recent discoveries. In this review, we highlight ways in which a chemistry-oriented perspective may facilitate novel and deep insights into both the fundamental scientific understanding and the design of materials, which can in turn tune the functionality and biocompatibility of bioelectronic devices. We provide an in-depth examination of several developments in the field, organized by the chemical properties of the materials. We conclude by surveying how some of the latest major topics of chemical research may be further integrated with bioelectronics.

Ultra-low pressure cellulose-based nanofiltration membrane fabricated on layer-by-layer assembly for efficient sodium chloride removal

Cellulose is a renewable, biodegradable, biocompatible, and sustainable material. A bamboo cellulose-based nanofiltration membrane (LBL-NF-CS/BCM) was prepared with a combination of layer-by-layer assembly and spraying methods. The chemical structure, morphology, and surface charge of the resultant LBL-NF-CS/BCM composite membranes were characterized based on Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy Scanning (XPS). The nanofiltration performance of the LBL-NF-CS/BCM composite membranes was evaluated using 500 ppm NaCl solutions under 0.3 MPa pressure. It was found that the LBL-NF-CS/BCM composite membranes had a rejection rate of about 36.11 % against a 500 ppm NaCl solution under the conditions tested, and membrane flux of about 12.08 L/(m² h) was reached. The combined layer-by-layer assembly and spraying provides a scalable and convenient process concept for nanofiltration membrane fabrication.

Self-Assembly of Hydrophobic and Self-Healing Bionanocomposite-Coated Controlled-Release Fertilizers

Self-healing materials have received increased attention because of their automatic detecting and repairing damage function. In this paper, a novel self-assembly and self-healing bionanocomposite was developed as a coating material for controlled release fertilizers. This nanotechnology-enabled coating is environmentally friendly and highly efficient and possesses a tunable nutrient-releasing characteristic. In the synthesis process, bio-based polyurethane coated urea (BPCU) was prepared by the reaction of bio-polyols with isocyanate. The BPCU was then modified by the layer-by-layer technology to prepare self-assembling modified BPCU (SBPCU). Last, hollow nano-silica (HNS) particles loaded with the sodium alginate (SA) were used to modify SBPCU to fabricate of self-assembling and self-healing BPCU (SSBPCU). The results show that the self-assembled materials were synthesized through electrostatic adsorption. The self-healing was observed through scanning electron microscopy and 3D-X-ray computed tomography, revealing the mechanism was that the repair agent released from HNS reacted with the curing agent to block the pore channels and cracks of the coating. As a result, the SSBPCU exhibited the highest hydrophobicity and surface roughness and thus the slowest release rate. For the first time, this work has designed a novel strategy to solve the bottleneck problem that restricts the development of a controlled-release fertilizer.

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy investigation of water microenvironments in polyelectrolyte multilayers at varying temperatures

Polyelectrolyte multilayers (PEMs) are thin films formed by the alternating deposition of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes. Water plays an important role in influencing the physical properties of PEMs, as it can act both as a plasticizer and swelling agent. However, the way in which water molecules distribute around and hydrate ion pairs has not been fully quantified with respect to both temperature and ionic strength. Here, we examine the effects of temperature and ionic strength on the hydration microenvironments of fully immersed poly(diallyldimethylammonium)/polystyrene sulfonate (PDADMA/PSS) PEMs. This is accomplished by tracking the OD stretch peak using attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy at 0.25-1.5 M NaCl and 35-70 °C. The OD stretch peak is deconvoluted into three peaks: (1) high frequency water, which represents a tightly bound microenvironment, (2) low frequency water, which represents a loosely bound microenvironment, and (3) bulk water. In general, the majority of water absorbed into the PEM exists in a bound state, with little-to-no bulk water observed. Increasing temperature slightly reduces the amount of absorbed water, while addition of salt increases the amount of absorbed water. Finally, a van't Hoff analysis is applied to estimate the enthalpy (11-22 kJ mol-1) and entropy (48-79 kJ mol-1 K-1) of water exchanging from low to high frequency states.

3D Hybrid Scaffolds Based on PEDOT:PSS/MWCNT Composites

Conducting polymer scaffolds combine the soft-porous structures of scaffolds with the electrical properties of conducting polymers. In most cases, such functional systems are developed by combining an insulating scaffold matrix with electrically conducting materials in a 3D hybrid network. However, issues arising from the poor electronic properties of such hybrid systems, hinder their application in many areas. This work reports on the design of a 3D electroactive scaffold, which is free of an insulating matrix. These 3D polymer constructs comprise of a water soluble conducting polymer (PEDOT:PSS) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The insertion of the MWCNTs in the 3D polymer matrix directly contributes to the electron transport efficiency, resulting in a 7-fold decrease in resistivity values. The distribution of CNTs, as characterized by SEM and Raman spectroscopy, further define the micro- and nano-structural topography while providing active sites for protein attachment, thereby rendering the system suitable for biological/sensing applications. The resulting scaffolds, combine high porosity, mechanical stability and excellent conducting properties, thus can be suitable for a variety of applications ranging from tissue engineering and biomedical devices to (bio-) energy storage.

Biological Applications of Organic Electrochemical Transistors: Electrochemical Biosensors and Electrophysiology Recording

Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are recently developed high-efficient transducers not only for electrochemical biosensor but also for cell electrophysiological recording due to the separation of gate electrode from the transistor device. The efficient integration of OECTs with electrochemical gate electrode makes the as-prepared sensors with improved performance, such as sensitivity, limit of detection, and selectivity. We herein reviewed the recent progress of OECTs-based biosensors and cell electrophysiology recording, mainly focusing on the principle and chemical design of gate electrode and the channel. First, the configuration, work principle, semiconductor of OECT are briefly introduced. Then different kinds of sensing modes are reviewed, especially for the biosensing and electrophysiological recording. Finally, the challenges and opportunities of this research field are discussed.

Functionalized Organic Thin Film Transistors for Biosensing

The rise of organic bioelectronics efficiently bridges the gap between semiconductor devices and biological systems, leading to flexible, lightweight, and low-cost organic bioelectronic devices suitable for health or body signal monitoring. The introduction of organic semiconductors in the devices can soften the boundaries between microelectronic systems and dynamically active cells and tissues. Therefore, organic bioelectronics has attracted much attention recently due to the unique properties and promising applications. Organic thin film transistors (OTFTs), owing to their inherent capability of amplifying received signals, have emerged as one of the state-of-the-art biosensing platforms. The advantages of organic semiconductors in terms of synthetic freedom, low temperature solution processing, biocompatibility, and mechanical flexibility render OTFTs ideal transducers for wearable electronics, e-skin, and implantable devices. How to realize highly sensitive, selective, rapid, and efficient signal capture and extraction of biological recognition events is the major challenge in the design of biosensors. OTFTs are prone to converting the presence or change of target analytes into specific electrical signals even in complex biological systems. More importantly, OTFT sensors can be conveniently functionalized with chemical or biological modifications and exhibit substantially improved device sensitivity and selectivity as well as other analytical figure of merits, including calibration range, linearity, and accuracy. However, the stability and reproducibility of the organic devices need to be further improved. In this Account, we first introduce the unique features of OTFTs for bioelectronic applications. Two typical OTFT configurations, including organic electrochemical transistor (OECT) and electrolyte gated organic field effect transistor (EGOFET), are highlighted in their sensing applications mainly due to the operation of the devices in electrolytes and the combination of ionic and electronic charge transports in the devices. These devices are potentiometric transducers with low working voltages (<1 V) and high sensitivity, and are thus suitable for wearable applications with low power consumption. Second, the functionalization strategies on channel materials, electrolytes, and gate electrodes based on various modification methods and sensing mechanisms are discussed in sequence. In an OECT- or EGOFET-based biosensor, the device performance is particularly sensitive to the physical properties of the two interfaces, including channel/electrolyte and gate/electrolyte interfaces. Any change in the potential drop or capacitance of either interface can influence the channel current substantially. Therefore, the functionalization of the interfaces is critical to the sensing performance. In particular, when an electrochemically active material is modified on the interfaces, the reaction of the analyte catalyzed by the modified material can influence the interface potential and lead to a channel current response much stronger than that of a conventional electrochemical measurement. So the biosensors are much more sensitive than typical analytical methods due to the signal amplification of the transistors. Third, the processing techniques including screen printing and inkjet printing and the possibility for mass production are discussed. The applications of organic transistors in wearable electronics and healthcare monitoring systems, especially the fabric OECT-based biosensors for noninvasive detection, are presented. It is expected that the versatile organic transistors will enable various compact, flexible and disposable biosensors compatible with wearable electronics.

Transistor in a tube: A route to three-dimensional bioelectronics

Advances in three-dimensional (3D) cell culture materials and techniques, which more accurately mimic in vivo systems to study biological phenomena, have fostered the development of organ and tissue models. While sophisticated 3D tissues can be generated, technology that can accurately assess the functionality of these complex models in a high-throughput and dynamic manner is not well adapted. Here, we present an organic bioelectronic device based on a conducting polymer scaffold integrated into an electrochemical transistor configuration. This platform supports the dual purpose of enabling 3D cell culture growth and real-time monitoring of the adhesion and growth of cells. We have adapted our system to a 3D tubular geometry facilitating free flow of nutrients, given its relevance in a variety of biological tissues (e.g., vascular, gastrointestinal, and kidney) and processes (e.g., blood flow). This biomimetic transistor in a tube does not require photolithography methods for preparation, allowing facile adaptation to the purpose. We demonstrate that epithelial and fibroblast cells grow readily and form tissue-like architectures within the conducting polymer scaffold that constitutes the channel of the transistor. The process of tissue formation inside the conducting polymer channel gradually modulates the transistor characteristics. Correlating the real-time changes in the steady-state characteristics of the transistor with the growth of the cultured tissue, we extract valuable insights regarding the transients of tissue formation. Our biomimetic platform enabling label-free, dynamic, and in situ measurements illustrates the potential for real-time monitoring of 3D cell culture and compatibility for use in long-term organ-on-chip platforms.

AC Measurements Using Organic Electrochemical Transistors for Accurate Sensing

Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) have been successfully employed for a variety of applications , especially chemical and biological sensing. Although the device response to analytes can be directly monitored by measuring steady-state channel currents of the devices, it is challenging to obtain stable signals with high signal-to-noise ratios. In this work, we developed a novel method for electrochemical sensing by measuring both the transconductance and the phase of the AC channel current for the first time. Then we successfully realized highly sensitive ion strength sensors and dopamine sensors based on the AC method. Our results indicate that the AC method is more sensitive than typical DC methods and can provide more stable data in sensing applications. Considering that the sensors can be conveniently integrated with AC circuits, this technology is expected to find broad applications in the future.

Direct metabolite detection with an n-type accumulation mode organic electrochemical transistor

The inherent specificity and electrochemical reversibility of enzymes poise them as the biorecognition element of choice for a wide range of metabolites. To use enzymes efficiently in biosensors, the redox centers of the protein should have good electrical communication with the transducing electrode, which requires either the use of mediators or tedious biofunctionalization approaches. We report an all-polymer micrometer-scale transistor platform for the detection of lactate, a significant metabolite in cellular metabolic pathways associated with critical health care conditions. The device embodies a new concept in metabolite sensing where we take advantage of the ion-to-electron transducing qualities of an electron-transporting (n-type) organic semiconductor and the inherent amplification properties of an ion-to-electron converting device, the organic electrochemical transistor. The n-type polymer incorporates hydrophilic side chains to enhance ion transport/injection, as well as to facilitate enzyme conjugation. The material is capable of accepting electrons of the enzymatic reaction and acts as a series of redox centers capable of switching between the neutral and reduced state. The result is a fast, selective, and sensitive metabolite sensor. The advantage of this device compared to traditional amperometric sensors is the amplification of the input signal endowed by the electrochemical transistor circuit and the design simplicity obviating the need for a reference electrode. The combination of redox enzymes and electron-transporting polymers will open up an avenue not only for the field of biosensors but also for the development of enzyme-based electrocatalytic energy generation/storage devices.

Organic Electronics for Point-of-Care Metabolite Monitoring

In this review we focus on demonstrating how organic electronic materials can solve key problems in biosensing thanks to their unique material properties and implementation in innovative device configurations. We highlight specific examples where these materials solve multiple issues related to complex sensing environments, and we benchmark these examples by comparing them to state-of-the-art commercially available sensing using alternative technologies. We have categorized our examples by sample type, focusing on sensing from body fluids in vitro and on wearable sensors, which have attracted significant interest owing to their integration with everyday life activities. We finish by describing a future trend for in vivo, implantable sensors, which aims to build on current progress from sensing in biological fluids ex vivo.

Layer-by-Layer Assembly of Polyoxometalates for Photoelectrochemical (PEC) Water Splitting: Toward Modular PEC Devices

Artificial photosynthesis is considered one of the most promising solutions to modern energy and environmental crises. Considering that it is enabled by multiple components through a series of photoelectrochemical processes, the key to successful development of a photosynthetic device depends not only on the development of novel individual components but also on the rational design of an integrated photosynthetic device assembled from them. However, most studies have been dedicated to the development of individual components due to the lack of a general and simple method for the construction of the integrated device. In the present study, we report a versatile and simple method to prepare an efficient and stable photoelectrochemical device via controlled assembly and integration of functional components on the nanoscale using the layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly technique. As a proof of concept, we could successfully build a photoanode for solar water oxidation by depositing a thin film of diverse cationic polyelectrolytes and anionic polyoxometalate (molecular metal oxide) water oxidation catalysts on the surface of various photoelectrode materials (e.g., Fe₂O₃, BiVO₄, and TiO₂). It was found that the performance of photoanodes was significantly improved after the deposition in terms of stability as well as photocatalytic properties, regardless of types of photoelectrodes and polyelectrolytes employed. Considering the simplicity and versatile nature of LbL assembly techniques, our approach can contribute to the realization of artificial photosynthesis by enabling the design of novel photosynthetic devices.
